WHILE DRIVING FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, THE AC WAS WORKING JUST FINE WHEN A HIGH PITCHED SQUEAL STARTED COMING FROM THE ENGINE. LIFTING MY FOOT OFF THE GAS SEEMED TO HELP AND THE NOISE WENT AWAY, BUT THE NOISE CAME BACK, AND A THUMPING SOUND STARTED TO COME THROUGH AND A SMALL POP HAPPENED, SENDING SOME SORT OF BLACK CANISTER SHOOTING OUT FROM UNDER MY CAR AND ONTO THE FREEWAY. I PULLED OVER AND CHECKED THE CAR FOR DAMAGE, NOT SEEING ANY MAJOR MARKS ON THE ENGINE AND NO LIQUIDS LEAKING FROM THE CAR. ONLY WHEN I REACHED MY DESTINATION AND THE CAR WOULD BLOW BOILING HOT AIR OUT OF THE VENTS DID I NOTICE AND ISSUE. THE DEALER DID AN INSPECTION OF THE CAR, AND TOLD ME THE AC HAD LITERALLY FALLEN OUT OF THE ENGINE BLOCK. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW A MAJOR PIECE OF A VEHICLE CAN FALL OUT, AND NOT BE ABLE TO BE REPLACED WITHOUT PAYING $2,000. *TR
I HAVE A 2004 HONDA CR-V. I HAD MY AC ON AND IT BEGAN TO GRIND. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS MY MOTOR, BUT SOON REALIZED IT WAS MY AIR CONDITIONER UNIT. I TOOK IT TO THE HONDA DEALERSHIP, AND THEY CHECKED IT OUT. COST FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC - $106.00 COST TO FIX IT: $4000.00 DIAGNOSIS:A/C COMPRESSOR FAILED. ALL THE A/C PARTS ARE INTERNALLY CONTAMINATED WITH METAL FROM THE COMPRESSOR. NEEDS A/C KIT (C) AND CLUTCH AND COIL. I HAVE BEEN CHECKING ONLINE AND MANY 2003 AND 2004 HONDA CRV'S HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM, BUT NO RECALL. I DON'T HAVE THAT MONEY TO SPEND, YET NEED AIR CONDITIONING. THE VEHICLE WAS ON THE ROAD GOING 60 MPH WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN HEARD LIKE A EXPLOSION SOUND AND IT MADE US SCARED AND MADE US NERVOUS TO DRIVE IT WE HAVE PUT 3 COMPRESSORS TOTAL. 2 COMPRESSOR ALONE AND ANOTHER COMPRESSOR WITH THE WHOLE THINGS LIKE FANS, RADIATOR,FOR AIR CONDITIONER HOSE,ETC, EVERYTHING. TOOK IT TO THE HONDA DEALER IN MANASSAS AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSER EXPLODED AND THERE WERE SMALL METAL PIECES THROUGHOUT THE LINE. THEY WANTED OVER $4000 TO REPAIR IT. THEY LATER COUNTER OFFERED TO FIX IT FOR $2600. AFTER I DID RESEARCH I FOUND THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR CRV'S 2002-2004. I WAS TOLD NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE THE CONDENSER COULD LOCK UP AND CAUSE OTHER PROBLEMS. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY I HAVE TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THAT IS CLEARING A DAMAGE AND DEFECTIVE PIECE OF MACHINERY THAT WAS INSTALLED BY HONDA. WHEN THE CAR WAS FINALLY TOWED TO A HONDA DEALER, I WAS TOLD THAT THE AIR CONDITIONER COMPRESSOR HAD EXPLODED! I UNDERSTAND WEARABLE PARTS BREAKING BUT EXPLODING! I WAS WITHIN A MILE OF APPROACHING AN ON-RAMP TO A 3-LANE HIGHWAY AND SHUDDER TO THINK OF WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD THE EXPLOSION OCCURRED ON THE INTERSTATE! BEYOND THE INCONVENIENCE AND COST (APPROACHING $2,000), THIS TYPE OF CATASROPHIC INCIDENT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. THE EXPLOSION CAUSED ME TO LOSE FULL CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE AND MOST DEFINITELY COULD HAVE CAUSED A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. *TT

I HAVE A 2004 HONDA CR-V EX WITH ALMOST 69K MILES. I HAVE ALWAYS MAINTAINED MY CAR TO THE GILLS AND JUST YESTERDAY MY A/C COMPRESSOR BLEW UP, LEAVING METAL SHARDS ALL THROUGH MY AC LINES. THE PULLEY AND CLUTCH (AC CLUTCH) WERE ALSO DESTROYED, LEAVING ME WITH A 2100 DOLLAR ESTIMATE. I HAVE DONE A LOT OF RESEARCH ONLINE ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND IT SEEMS THAT IT IS HAPPENING A LOT IN THE 2002-2004 MODELS. I HAVE ALSO READ THAT THEY KNEW THE PART WAS FAULTY AND STILL CONTINUED TO INSTALL IT. THIS IS NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AND THE PART HAS SINCE BEEN REDESIGNED. I HAVE ONLY GOTTEN AN ESTIMATE, I REFUSE TO PAY FOR THIS DAMAGE WHEN IT IS CLEARLY HONDA'S FAULT. THERE HAS BEEN A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST THIS PROBLEM AND IF I CAN FIND A WAY TO ADD MY NAME, I WILL DO IT. LACK OF AC CAN LEAD TO HEATSTROKE AND OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS. ALSO, THE AC IS NEEDED IN THE WINTER FOR THE DEFROSTER, AND I CAN CLEARLY SEE A FOGGY WINDSHIELD LEADING TO ACCIDENTS. ON FEBRUARY 20, WHILE DRIVING ON THE NEW YORK STATE THRUWAY OUR CAR SHIMMIED AND THEN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. SIMULTANEOUSLY, MY WIFE HEARD A SOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE. WE QUICKLY PULLED ONTO THE EXIT (JUST SOUTH OF BUFFALO) INTO AN AUTOMOBILE REPAIR SHOP THAT WAS RIGHT OFF THE EXIT RAMP. WHEN WE PULLED INTO THE REPAIR SHOP, THE CAR STALLED. A QUICK DIAGNOSIS BY THE REPAIR SHOP CONCLUDED THAT THE ISSUE WAS NOT REPAIRABLE THAT DAY AS THE SHOP WAS CLOSING IN 15 MINUTES. ON MONDAY, THE REPAIR SHOP REPORTED THAT THE SPARK PLUG IN CYLINDER 2 HAD BLOWN OUT. TO ATTEMPT A FIX, THEY INSERTED A HELI-COIL AND PLUG BUT WERE STILL UNABLE TO GET THE PRESSURE ABOVE 40 P.S.I ON THE CYLINDER. A DEEPER DIAGNOSIS INDICATED SCOURING/SCARRING ON THE CYLINDER 2 BORE AS WELL AS THE CYLINDER HEAD CAUSED BY THE SPARK PLUG DEBRIS. I WAS TOLD THE ONLY COST EFFECTIVE FIX FOR THIS WAS TO GET A REPLACEMENT ENGINE. TO GET ANOTHER OPINION, I CONTACTED A LOCAL HONDA DEALER IN THE BUFFALO AREA (RAY LAKS) AND THEY CONFIRMED OVER THE PHONE THAT SCARRING ON THE CYLINDER SLEEVE WOULD REQUIRE A REPLACEMENT ENGINE. THE PLUGS THAT WERE ON THE CAR WERE THE OEM FACTORY INSTALLED. I HAD PLANNED ON REPLACING THESE AT 110,000 MILES PER THE HONDA MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE. MY CAR HAD 105,713 MILES WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED. I AM THE ORIGINAL AND ONLY OWNER OF THIS AUTOMOBILE. THE FIX WAS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ENGINE. THE FAILURE OF THIS OEM COMPONENT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. *TR

UPON HEARING THE CIRCUMSTANCES, I TOLD MY DAUGHTER TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE HOME FROM COLLEGE. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO OUR INDEPENDENT AUTO REPAIR SHOP WHERE HE DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM AS A BLOWN A/C COMPRESSOR. WE HAD THE REPAIRS COMPLETED IN ONE DAY AT COST OF $757.00 AND MY DAUGHTER WAS BACK AT COLLEGE THE NEXT DAY. THE OLD PART IS AVAILABLE IF NEEDED BUT THE MECHANIC WILL ONLY HOLD IT FOR ONE WEEK. *TR

THEY ADMITTED IT WAS A KNOWN HONDA PROBLEM BUT STATED THAT HONDA WASN'T DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. QUOTED ME $1,200 AND SAID I WAS LUCKY THAT IT HADN'T CONTAMINATED THE ENTIRE SYSTEM. *TR

CURRENTLY THE CAR IS AT A BODY SHOP WHO TOLD ME I GOT LUCKY AND THE REPAIRS WOULD ONLY AMOUNT TO $835 BECAUSE THE PART ALONE IS $550. CONTACTED HONDA AMERICA AND THEY BASICALLY LAUGHED AT ME AND SAID GOOD LUCK. VERY IRRITATED, BUT AFTER THE REPORT OF SO MANY HONDA'S BEING RECALLED IN THE PAPER YESTERDAY I SEE WHY THEY HAVEN'T YET RECALLED THEM FOR THIS ISSUE. ALTHOUGH I WASN'T STRANDED LIKE SOME PEOPLE REPORT ENGINE LOCKING DOWN FROM THIS BECAUSE WHEN THE COMPRESSOR BROKE IT BROKE THEIR TIMING BELT AND RADIATORS, IT IS STILL VERY FRUSTRATING AND NOT SAFE TO DRIVE IN EXTREME HEAT WITH NO WARNING YOUR AIR WILL BE OUT AND HOW MUCH IT COSTS TO HAVE IT FIXED. *TR

2004 CRV: AFTER SEVERAL HOURS OF PROBLEM-FREE DRIVING ON FREEWAY, WE HEARD A LOUD POPPING NOISE AND SOME CLUNKING/RATTLING NOISES COMING FROM BENEATH THE CAR (SOUNDED LIKE WE RAN OVER SOMETHING AND IT WAS BOUNCING AROUND UNDERNEATH BUT THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE ROAD). SOUND CEASED FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THEN A FEW MORE CLUNKS/RATTLES BEFORE SOUND CEASED AGAIN. THEN WE NOTICED THAT THE AIR CONDITIONER WAS NO LONGER WORKING. ALL INDICATORS WERE ON, FAN WAS BLOWING, BUT AIR WAS NOT COOLED. SOMETHING SIMILAR HAPPENED SEVERAL YEARS AGO (APPROXIMATELY 2005-2006) WHILE OUR CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, ALTHOUGH IT WAS A MORE GRADUAL FAILURE, NOT QUITE AS CATASTROPHIC AS THIS EVENT. ALL THE STALLS OCCUR DURING THE SAME PERIOD RELATIVE ENGINE STARTUP, BETWEEN ABOUT FIVE AND TEN MINUTES AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE, AND WHEN THE VEHICLE COMES TO A STOP. THIS STALL PERIOD BASICALLY OCCURS AT STOP SIGNS FOR A MULTI-MINUTE PERIOD AFTER THE CHOKE COMES DOWN. I ASKED HOW THIS COULD HAPPEN? I HAD RESEARCHED THIS VEHICLE AND THE ONLY NEGATIVE REMARKS I COULD FIND WERE ABOUT THE FIRST OIL CHANGE. DURNING THE FIRST OIL CHANGE , THE ORIGINAL OIL FILTER GASKET STUCK TO THE ENGINE BLOCK. THIS CREATED A DOUBLE GASKET . THE PIEDMONT HONDA DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO CORRECT THE DEFECT AND STATED CHECKED VEHICLE AND COMPARED TO A NEW VEHICLE. SOUND IS NOT ABNORMAL AND IS CHARACTERISTIC OF VEHICLE. PERFORMS AS DESIGNED PIEDMONT HONDAS REFUSAL HAS DIRECTLY RESULTED IN THE ENGINE STALLING OUT ON ONE OCCASION (8/16/2004) AND REFUSING TO START ON 2 OTHER OCCASIONS (7/28/2004, 8/1/2004). PURCHASED 2004 HONDA CR-V JANUARY 2004 FROM CONTINENTAL HONDA IN ANCHORAGE ALASKA. WE TOOK IT IN FOR ITS FIRST OIL CHANGE (5,000 MILES) ON JUNE 16TH. AFTER DRIVING THE 15 MILES HOME, THE ENGINE STARTED BILLOWING SMOKE, AND SPUING OIL (THE TRAIL OF OIL CAN STILL BE SEEN ON THE STREET). THE DEALER HAD IT TOWED TO DEALERSHIP, THEY EXPLAINED IT AS A FAULTY OIL GASKET, AND OFFERED A FREE OIL CHANGE. AFTER DRIVING FOR A FEW WEEKS, I NOTICED A CLACKING SOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE. I HAD THE TECHINTIANS CHECK IT OUT DURING THE SECOND OIL CHANGE ON AUGUST 16. AFTER TWO WEEKS OF LOOKING FOR THE PROBLEM, THEY DEDUCED THERE WAS SOME "SCORING" INSIDE THE PISTONS AND THAT THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE SHORTBLOCK. THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS A FLUKE (A FIRST TIME INCIDENT) AND THAT THE ENGINE WILL BE SENT TO HONDA USA FOR FURTHER INSPECTION. I FINALLY GOT THE CALL YESTERDAY (SEPTEMBER 9) THAT THE CAR WAS READY TO BE PICKED UP. IN ALL FAIRNESS, THE EMPLOYEES AT THE DEALERSHIP WERE VERY PROFESSIONAL AND COURTEOUS.*AK

I WAS ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK, LESS THAN 2 MILES FROM HOME. I STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT AND NOTICED SMOKE. I DIDNT' KNOW IT WAS MY CAR AT THE TIME. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER TOLD ME THAT THAT WAS THE THIRD CRV THAT HE HAD TOWED WITH FIRE DAMAGE IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS.(HIS NAME WAS PHIL) I THINK THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL IF THIS HAS HAPPENED THIS MANY TIMES. ON AUG. 20TH I TOOK MY '04 CR-V TO THE HONDA DEALER WHERE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE FOR ITS 5,000 MILE SERVICE, INCLUDING ITS FIRST OIL CHANGE. THE NEXT DAY, AFTER DRIVING IT FOR SEVERAL MILES AND STOPPING TO GET GAS, I NOTICED A BURNT ODOR. I POPPED THE HOOD AND NOTICED A SMALL AMOUNT OF SMOKE COMING UP FROM THE BACK OF THE ENGINE. I LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED OIL DRIPPING FROM SEVERAL LOCATIONS. I RETURNED THE CR-V TO THE DEALER. THEY EXAMINED THE VEHICLE AND TOLD ME THAT THE PROBLEM WAS A "DOUBLE-GASKET" - THE GASKET FROM THE FACTORY-INSTALLED OIL FILTER HAD STUCK IN PLACE WHEN THE OIL FILTER WAS REMOVED, AND A NEW OIL FILTER AND GASKET WAS INSTALLED OVER THE OLD GASKET, RESULTING IN AN OIL LEAK. AMID MANY APOLOGIES, THE OLD GASKET WAS REMOVED AND THE OIL CHANGE WAS PROPERLY COMPLETED. HAD I BEEN LESS ATTENTIVE TO THE VEHICLE AFTER THE OIL CHANGE, AND HAD THE VEHICLE BEEN DRIVEN AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THERE WAS A VERY GOOD POSSIBILITY THAT A FIRE WOULD HAVE RESULTED. WHY DID NHTSA CLOSE THEIR INVESTIGATION OF THE CR-V FIRES? WHY DID HONDA LAY THE BLAME ON TECHNICIANS? AND WHY, AFTER ALL THE PUBLICITY THE FIRES RECEIVED AND AFTER HONDA PRESUMABLY INSTRUCTED THEIR TECHNICIANS TO BE ESPECIALLY CAREFUL WITH CR-V OIL CHANGES, ARE CR-V OWNERS STILL AT RISK OF A FIRE AFTER AN OIL CHANGE? UPON INSPECTION OF VEHICLE, MR. KORALLUS, INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS CAUSED BY THE DOUBLE GASKET. THEY THEN PROCEEDED TO CLEAN THE MESS UP WITH 6 CANS OF BRAKE FLUID. HOW SAFE CAN THIS BE? THERE'S NO GUARANTEE THAT THIS NEGLIGENCE ON HONDA'S PART WON'T CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGES TO THE CAR IN THE FUTURE. WORSE YET, INJURIES. HAVING JUST HAD THE FIRST OIL CHANGE PERFORMED ON MY 2004 HONDA CR-V, I WAS ONLY A FEW BLOCKS AWAY FROM THE DEALERSHIP WHICH PERFORMED THE OIL CHANGE (HANOVER HONDA IN HANOVER, PA) WHEN SMOKE STARTED POURING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND THROUGH THE AIR CONDITIONING VENTS. I MANAGED TO GET THE VEHICLE OFF THE STREET AND THE IGNITION SWITCHED OFF WITHIN SECONDS OF THE LOW OIL WARNING LIGHT COMING ON. I WAS TOLD BY THE ASSISTANT SERVICE MANAGER THAT IT APPEARED THE OIL FILTER WAS DEFECTIVE. AFTER HEARING REPORTS IN THE NEWS (ON JULY 9, 2004) OF OTHER CR-V OWNER WHO EXPERIENCED FIRES IN THEIR VEHICLES THAT SEEMED TO ORIGINATE WITH THE OIL FILTER, I WANTED TO FILE THIS REPORT WITH NHTSA.*AK

(1) VEHICLE (2004 HONDA CR-V, VIN#SHSRD68474U20079) WAS BROUGHT INTO BRAHMAN HONDA (LOCAL DEALERSHIP IN MIAMI) FOR ITS FIRST OIL CHANGE ON APRIL 12TH, 2004. CONTINUED NORMAL USAGE OF VEHICLE UNTIL ENGINE CAUGHT ON FIRE ON JUNE 16TH, 2004 AT 8PM.*AK (2) VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN IN NORMAL TRAFFIC CONDITIONS ALONG MAJOR STREET. AS THE VEHICLE WE BEING DRIVEN, IT BEGAN EMITTING LARGE AMOUNTS OF SMOKE FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT. DRIVER WAS ABLE TO DISENGAGE THE VEHICLE AT A MAJOR INTERSECTION. FIRE DEPARTMENT CAME TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE AND MOVE THE DISABLED VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD. EVIDENCE OF SIGNIFICANT OIL LEAK CAN BE FOUND. EVIDENCE OF OIL LEAKAGE CAN BE FOUND INSIDE AND UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. (3) VEHICLE HAS BEEN BROUGHT INTO BRAHMAN HONDA. PENDING INSPECTION BY INSURANCE COMPANY AND HONDA MECHANICS.

ON MAY 29, 2004, I PURCHASED A HONDA CR-V, 2004, VEHICLE FROM CASEY HONDA IN NEWPORT NEWS. IT IS A FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. I HAD THE VEHICLE FOR ONLY TWO WEEKS AND I ONLY DROVE IT 109 MILES. THE ODOMETER RIGHT NOW SHOWS 117 MILES. ON JUNE 13, I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE IN NEWPORT NEWS, VA WHEN SUDDENLY THE ENGINE STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, IN FRONT OF THE STOP TRAFFIC LIGHT. THERE WAS A BURNING SMELL COMING OUT OF THE HOOD AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN I TURN ON THE ENGINE THE TACHOMETER SHOW 1000 RPM, THEN 3000 RPM AND THEN BACK AGAIN TO 2000 RPM. THUS THE TACHOMETER SHOWS AN UNSTABLE RUNNING ENGINE WHEN THE TRANSMISSION IS ON THE NEUTRAL OR PARKING POSITION. I WAS ABLE TO START THE ENGINE AFTER A FEW MINUTES AND GET HOME WHICH WAS FORTUNATELY ONLY A MILE AWAY. ON JUNE 14, 2004 I CONTACTED THE CASEY HONDA DEALERSHIP AND THEY SENT THEIR REPRESENTATIVE TO TOW AWAY THE VEHICLE. THE ODOMETER SHOWED 117 MILES. THE SAME DAY THE DEALERSHIP SERVICEMAN, MR. KEVIN, CALLED ME AND TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE IS NOT DRIVABLE AND THAT THEY HAVE TO KEEP THE VEHICLE FOR ABOUT A WEEK UNTIL THE PARTS WILL ARRIVE AND THEY WILL TRY TO FIX IT. HE TOLD ME THAT THE CAUSES OF THE PROBLEM ARE SOME DEFECTIVE PARTS THAT THEY NEED TO REPLACE.

TOOK NEW 2004 HONDA CR-V INTO DEALER (BOB BARBOUR HONDA OF GREENVILLE, NC) FOR FIRST OIL CHANGE ON SATURDAY, MAY 15 2002. ON SUNDAY, WHILE DRIVING ACROSS TOWN TO CHURCH WITH MY WIFE AND TWO YOUNG CHILDREN, I NOTICED A LARGE AMOUNT OF SMOKE. I PULLED OUT OF TRAFFIC AND A MAN AT A NEARBY BUSINESS CAME RUNNING OUT YELLING THAT MY CAR WAS ON FIRE. WE EXITED THE VEHICLE, UNBUCKLED THE CHILDREN FROM THE SAFTEY SEATS AND GOT AWAY FROM THE CAR. THE FIRE DEPT WAS CALLED TO EXTENGUISH THE FIRE. POLICE OFFICER ALSO ARRIVED ON THE SCENE. AS IT IS A SUNDAY, I HAVE NOT BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE DEALER YET TO DETERMINE HOW THEY INTEND TO CORRECT THE SITUATION. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH VEHICLE STALLED. THIS CAUSED A LOSS OF STEERING AND BRAKES. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED TO REPLACE THE OIL PUMP. *AK
