There was a safety recall for the rear arm control and excessive rust, Honda said they fixed it back in 2018… out of no where my car lost control and caused me to crash, I brought the car back to Honda and the rear arm bracket broke off due to excessive rust however Honda states it was repaired and there is nothing they can do, they won’t even look at the vehicle.

I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction regarding the handling of the recall for my 2007 Honda CR-V due to frame corrosion. During the recall service, only a bracket was installed under the wheel well, addressing a single area despite extensive rust present throughout the frame and underbody. I believe the vehicle should have been considered for a buyback rather than a limited repair. Recently, my vehicle failed its safety inspection due to a rust hole in the frame, making it unsafe to drive and only suitable for scrap. When I contacted Honda for further assistance, I was informed that only recall-related issues would be addressed, and no additional support was offered. The presence of severe rust and a compromised frame poses significant safety risks, including: •Increased likelihood of structural failure in the event of a collision, which could result in serious injury or death. •Reduced effectiveness of critical safety components, such as seat belts and airbags, due to weakened mounting points. •Higher risk of suspension or wheel detachment while driving, potentially causing loss of vehicle control. I am deeply concerned about the safety implications and the inadequate resolution of the recall.

The contact was informed that the vehicle could not be repaired. The contact was also informed that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The vehicle was not repaired. On 07/21/2023, I took my car to the dealership for an evaluation related to a recall on the Rear Frame Brace. The inspection revealed that my car was unsafe to drive, and I was informed that I could not take it off the dealership premises. Since then, I have been trying to reach an agreeable solution with America Honda Motor- Honda Recall, but they have not responded. I have also tried to get assistance from the Attorney General of my state but to no avail. The local Honda dealership still has possession of my auto, and this issue remains unresolved as of 02/11/2024.

The contact noticed that the rear passenger's side wheel had detached and rotated 90 degrees into the wheel well. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who determined that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V228000 (Structure). The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was determined that the vehicle had failed the recall inspection test. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle was beyond repair and could be repurchased by the manufacturer per the recall remedy. The contact had the vehicle towed to a body shop where it was diagnosed that the rear axle had separated from the frame due to severe corrosion of the rear supports. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact sold the vehicle for scrap. The contact had received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V228000 (Structure) and related the failure to the notification. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 230,000.

The contact’s wife pulled over and discovered that the rear driver’s side tire was inverted inside the wheel well. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to a dealer where the contact was informed that the vehicle was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V228000 (Structure). Despite the recall, the vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer due to the part not being available. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure. The vehicle was not yet repaired. My catalytic converter was stolen when my car was parked. Honda owners has been targeted for its catalytic converters, and there are numerous reports of Honda’s cats being stolen. Honda has a major defect where it makes it easier for thieves to steal the cat in minutes. There are 3 major flaws with the product. 1) Hondas don’t automatically come with a cat converter steel shield, cage, or other protector to make them harder to steal. 2) Hondas don’t install their cat in the engine compartment like other car manufacturers to deter theft. 3) Honda’s cat contains valuable materials, which is why they are targeted. Other car brands tend to have less valuable catalysts so thieves are not incentivized to steal them. Because there are many cats being stolen, there is a shortage to replace them, and car owners have to wait weeks to months to get their cat replaced. It’s been almost 2 weeks, and my car is still at the mechanic’s waiting for a replacement catalytic converter. My safety, and the safety of my family, including two kids, were compromised because I had to drive my family home (and we live in a hilly area) without a cat as it was stolen Sunday evening, and I had to wait until the next day to get it to the mechanic’s. The warning light appeared when I started the car, but by the telltale sound my car made, I already knew the cat was stolen. A police report was filed and the claim with my insurance was completed. Cats are very expensive to replace and an inconvenience for a 1-car family. Now we don’t have a car to do basic necessities like take the kids to school, go grocery shopping for the family, go to work, and go to doctor appointments.

While performing maintenance on the car, I found that the left (drivers) rear mounting bracket which is a part of the frame/body, and hold the right rear trailing arm - holding the rear axle was severely rusted and cracking apart from corrosion. The right (passenger) bracket showed no rust damage. This problem has been reported by others, and Canada has found the same issues and issued a recall for this car/vin group. Although this car is 15 years old, this thick 3/8" heavy metal bracket should not have disintegrated like this even with the salt used on the highways, and is shown with absolutely no issue with the right (passenger side)bracket. Upon taking it to the dealer, there was nothing they could do, nor could they get the "fix" being used in Canada or any other information as to how they are correcting this problem. Suggestion is to buy a new car or take it to a body shop and see if they could fabricate a repair. Honda dealer did not seem to be too concerned about this rust, so I will have to go elsewhere to have it evaluated. From what I have found here on the internet, this is a serious problem, and when it breaks as it has for others, you loose control of the car because the axle is now only attached to one side of the car. If there is a fix for this, (as they have one in Canada) they should be compelled to provide it. This isn't a who pays for the repair. It's been known for some time now, and they should have already addressed this. But to withhold the safety fix isn't acceptable.

While driving vehicle on 07/01/2021 the right rear trailing arm disconnected from the right rear frame rail due to corrosion. Transport Canada issued a recall (#2019-025) for 83,953 Honda CR-V's sold new in Canada for this problem. My Honda CR-V was manufactured at the same plant as those recalled in Canada. The reason for the recall in Canada was because these vehicles were driven on roads treated with deicing materials, much the same as vehicles driven in Illinois. This vehicle has not been inspected by American Honda. This is a clear safety issue due to the nature of the suspension becoming detached with no notice.

AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN A CITY STREET, THE RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION CONTROL ARM CAME LOOSE FROM THE FRAME. THE RIGHT WHEEL TIRE SUBSEQUENTLY BECAME LODGED AGAINST THE REAR OF THE WHEEL WELL AT AN ANGLE. I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. POLICE ARRIVED TO BLOCK OFF THE NEAREST LANE SO I COULD SAFELY BE TOWED FROM THE SCENE, AS THE CAR WAS UNDRIVABLE. I AM FORTUNATE THAT THIS DID NOT HAPPEN AT HIGH SPEED, AS I DO NOT BELIEVE I WOULD HAVE SAFELY BEEN ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTROL ARM CAME LOOSE DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME. THE AREA AROUND THE MOUNTING LOCATION FOR THE ARM IS TORN AWAY FROM THE FRAME, THE NUTS AND BOLTS ARE STILL ATTACHED TO THE FRAGMENTS OF FRAME THEY WERE ORIGINALLY MOUNTED TO. THIS MODEL YEAR CRV IS UNDER RECALL FOR EXCESSIVE CORROSION IN CANADIAN PROVINCES WHERE ROAD SALT IS EXTENSIVELY USED IN WINTER. THIS MODEL WAS PURCHASED IN MINNESOTA, WHERE ROAD SALT IS EXTENSIVELY USED IN WINTER.

VEHICLE FAILED STATE INSPECTION DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION IN THE REAR FRAME AND THE RISK OF THE REAR-TRAILING SEPARATING FROM THE FRAME AND LIKELIHOOD OF AN ENSUING ACCIDENT. THE INSPECTION STATION STRONGLY RECOMMENDED AGAINST REPAIR DUE TO THE STRESS POINT, AND INTEGRITY OF THE SURROUNDING STRUCTURES. I OPENED CASE # 10157114 WITH AMERICAN HONDA, AND THEY HAVE THE DOCUMENTATION OF THE ISSUE ALONG WITH PICTURES TAKEN BY AN AUTHORIZED HONDA DEALER. THIS SAME ISSUE WAS IDENTIFIED IN 2019 BY TRANSPORT CANADA RECALL # 2019025. HONDA CANADA'S STATEMENT REGARDING THE RECALL: "EXCESSIVE CORROSION TO THE REAR FRAME MAY RESULT IN FRAME STIFFENER PERFORATION AND, IN EXTREME CASES, CAUSE THE REAR-TRAILING ARM TO SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE'S FRAME STRUCTURE. A SEPARATED REAR-TRAILING ARM MAY CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO BE DIFFICULT TO CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH." AMERICAN HONDA (USA) REFUSES TO RECOGNIZE THE ISSUE, AND INSISTS THIS IS ONLY A HONDA CANADA ISSUE. THE PROBLEM WITH THAT STANCE IS THAT CANADIAN PRODUCTION OF THE CR-V MODEL DID NOT BEGIN UNTIL THE 2012 MODEL YEAR. CR-VS FOR BOTH THE CANADIAN AND US MARKETS FOR THE 2007-2011 MODEL YEARS WERE PRIMARILY PRODUCED IN EAST LIBERTY, OH, USA AND SAYAMA, SAITAMA, JAPAN. THUS THE MANUFACTURING SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE FRAMES OF THE VEHICLES SUBJECT TO THE CANADIAN RECALL WILL EXACTLY MATCH THOSE SOLD IN THE USA AS THEY CAME OFF THE SAME PRODUCTION LINES. THE VEHICLE SUBJECT OF THIS COMPLAINT WAS ASSEMBLED AT THE JAPAN FACILITY.

WHILE DRIVING TO WORK, JUST COMING OFF THE HIGHWAY, I NOTICED MY CAR BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER, AND SAW MY BACK DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE AT A VERY STRANGE ANGLE. I CALLED THE TOW TRUCK. WE BOTH LOOKED UNDER THE CAR, AND IT APPEARED TO BE THAT THE ARM CAME DISLODGED FROM THE FRAME ON THAT SIDE DUE TO EXTENSIVE CORROSION. WHEN COMING HOME I GOOGLED THE ISSUE, AND SAW CANADA HAD A SAFETY RECALL FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM, IN HUMID AREAS THAT USE SALT FOR DE-ICING. COASTAL NEW ENGLAND WOULD ALSO FALL UNDER THESE CONDITIONS, AS WOULD MANY OTHER NORTHERN AREAS OF THE UNITED STATES. THIS SHOULD ABSOLUTELY BE RECALLED HERE AS WELL. IF IT HAD HAPPENED 5 MINUTES SOONER, I COULD HAVE BEEN IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT.

FRONT PASSENGER DOOR LOCK WILL NOT STAY UNLOCKED AFTER BEING ACTIVATED FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE OR PASSENGER SIDE. THIS POSES A SAFETY PROBLEM SHOULD THE FRONT PASSENGER NEED TO EXIT THE VEHICLE IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR LOCK WILL NOT STAY LOCKED, AFTER MANUALLY "LOCKING" THE VEHICLE AND ESPECIALLY AFTER THE VEHICLES AUTOMATIC LOCKING SYSTEM IS ACTIVATED. THIS POSES A SAFETY ISSUE SHOULD A CHILD, OR A PASSENGER IF ANY AGE CAN OPEN THE DOOR WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. THIS IS A SAFETY FEATURE AND DOOR LOCKS SHOULD BE COVERED BY HONDA WITH NO EXPIRATION.

DRIVER'S SIDE REAR DOOR LOCK MOVES ITSELF INTO UNLOCK POSITION EITHER IMMEDIATELY AFTER LOCKING, OR WITHIN A FEW MINUTES OF DRIVING. THE ACTUATOR WILL LOCK, BUT THERE IS CLEARLY A SPRING FORCE THAT GRADUALLY UNLOCKS THE DOOR DURING DRIVING, OR EVEN WHEN STATIONARY IN A PARKING LOT. I FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM AS THE DOORS WOULD CONTINUALLY TRY TO LOCK IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. EVENTUALLY, I FOUND WHICH DOOR, WHEN I OPENED IT FROM THE OUTSIDE WHEN ALL OTHERS WERE LOCKED. DOOR LOCKS BEGAN TO LOCK AND UNLOCK BY THEMSELVES REPEATEDLY AS I DROVE, UNLOCKING @ AROUND 9 MPH NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I RELOCKED. IF I RELOCKED THEM THEY WOULD OPEN AT AN INTERSECTION STOP (VERY UNSAFE ALSO!), OR JUST OPEN & CLOSE WHILE I WAS DRIVING - ALL KINDS OF NOISY DOOR-LOCKING & UNLOCKING. I WAS UNABLE TO KEEP THE REAR DOOR LOCKED AT ALL WHEN I STOPPED THE CAR, LEAVING IT UNLOCKED AT NIGHT OR IF I LEFT THE CARE TO GO SOMEWHERE. I WAS ON A TRIP WITH LUGGAGE, COMPUTER, GPS, ETC. IN THE CAR AND IT WAS UNLOCKED! WHEN I GOT BACK HOME TO RHODE ISLAND AND BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY FOUND THE LOCK ACTUATORS ON THE FRONT & REAR PASSENGER DOORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $524. THEY STATED THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED BUT IT WAS NOT CAUSE BY ANYTHING I DID, WHICH MADE ME EVEN MORE UNCOMFORTABLE BECAUSE THEN IT MIGHT HAPPEN AGAIN! I FELT I HAD TO PAY TO HAVE THE SERVICE COMPLETED BECAUSE I FELT SO UNSAFE WITH AN UNLOCKED AUTO, BOTH ON THE ROAD WHEN DRIVING AND ALSO OVERNIGHT OR WHEN PARKED. I WAS AT THE CABIN FINISHING UP SOME CHORES. WENT TO PUT SOME TOOLS IN THE BACK SEAT OF THE HONDA CRV AND THE DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN. THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO THE BACK HATCH. THE DOOR COULD NOT BE OPENED WITH OUT GREAT DIFFICULTY FROM THE INSIDE AND NOT AT ALL FROM THE OUTSIDE. THE HATCH COULD BE OPENED ALSO ONLY FROM THE INSIDE AFTER CRAWLING OVER THE SEATS AND ONLY AFTER REMOVING THE LATCH PANEL AND MANUALLY FLIPPING THE LATCH. AFTER I GOT HOME I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND THE INTERNET IS FULL OF SUCH PROBLEMS. I UNDERSTAND THAT SOME MODELS OF CRV 2006 AND OLDER HAD A RECALL. OF COURSE MINE IS A 2007. PROBLEMS WITH THE LATCH AND ACTUATOR ARE A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE AS IF THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT OR FIRE BOTH OF THESE EGRESSES OUT OF THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT BE AVAILABLE EITHER BY THE OCCUPANTS OR RESCUE PERSONNEL. WHEN CHECKING WASHER FLUID, I NOTICED THE FLUID WAS NOT VISIBLE, SO I ADDED THE PROPER FLUID. AS NOTHING HAPPENED, I LOOKED UNDER CAR, & THE WASHER SOLUTION WAS RUNNING OUT ON THE CONCRETE FLOOR, AS I POURED IT INTO JUG. UPON FURTHER EXAMINATION, I FOUND PIECES OF THE TUBING THAT HAD BEEN CHEWED ON, AND IN SOME AREAS, CHEWED COMPLETELY THROUGH. ONE OF THESE AREAS I WAS ABLE TO ACCESS VIA A PLASTIC DOOR, ABOUT 12 INCHES WIDE, BY ABOUT 2 INCHES IN HEIGHT, LOCATED UNDER THE HOOD, IN THE CENTER OF THE FIREWALL, JUST BELOW THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS. I FOUND PIECES OF TUBING IN THIS AREA, ALSO. LOOKING FURTHER, I FOUND INSULATION THAT MICE HAD MOVED FROM AN UNKNOWN AREA, TO MAKE THEIR NEST. WITH SOME DIFFICULTY, I FINALLY RECEIVED A CALL FROM A HONDA REP, IN CALIFORNIA. AFTER ABOUT 25 MINUTES OF DISCUSSION, IN A PEACEFUL MANNER, I WAS NOT OFFERED ANY SOLUTION TO THE MICE PROBLEM, AS I WAS TRYING TO GET HONDA TO HELP ME DETERMINE WHERE THE POINT OF ENTRY WAS LOCATED AT, IN THE CAR BODY, THAT WOULD ALLOW MICE TO GAIN ENTRY. AS A FORMER AUTO MECHANIC, & A STRUCTURE AIRCRAFT MECHANIC, I PLANNED TO MAKE THE REPAIR MYSELF. (THE INSULATION MOVEMENT COULD BE AFFECTING THE A/C & HEATING SYSTEMS, ALSO). LATER, I FOUND BOTH OF THE WIRES TO THE LEFT CLEARANCE LIGHT HAD BEEN CHEWED COMPLETELY THROUGH, WIRE & ALL. I LATER READ ON A WEB SITE, THAT THE WIRING INSULATION WAS MADE OUT OF RECYCLED FOOD MATERIAL, SUCH AS THE HUSKS FROM CORN, OR PODS FROM MATURE DRIED BEANS!! I CONSIDER THE WINDSHIELD WASHER PROBLEM A SAFETY HAZARD, FOR SURE. OTHER MFG OF ASIAN CARS COULD BE USING FOOD GRADE WIRING. IF THE MICE CAN'T BE STOPPED, THEY COULD TOTALLY DESTROY THESE NEWER TYPE CARS, LOOKING FOR SHELTER, WITH A BUILT-IN FOOD SUPPLY. THIS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A FIRE HAZARD, ALSO, IN MY OPINION, DUE TO CAUSING A SHORT-CIRCUIT IN THE WIRING SYSTEMS. *TR

VEHICLE BEGAN RESETTING DOOR LOCKS WHENEVER VEHICLE ACCELERATED THROUGH 7 OR 8 MPH FROM STOP. AFTER AWHILE, DRIVER SIDE FRONT AND BACK DOORS WOULD NOT LOCK AUTOMATICALLY AND INTERMITTENTLY THE DRIVER DOOR COULD NOT BE MANUALLY LOCKED (HEAVY RESISTANCE WHEN TRYING TO FLIP LATCH). ON A LESS FREQUENT BASIS, THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR DOOR WOULD NOT AUTO OR MANUALLY LOCK. FOR LAST SEVERAL MONTHS THE DOOR LOCK SOLENOIDS FIRE LIKE A MACHINE GUN WHENEVER THE DOORS ARE MANUALLY OR AUTOMATICALLY LOCKED. SOME TIMES THEY ALL LOCK, OTHER TIMES ONE OR MORE OF THE DOORS WON'T. TOLERATED FOR MANY MONTHS AS DEALER WOULDN'T FIX UNDER WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH ONLY 1000 MILES AND A FEW DAYS PAST 12MO/36K COVERAGE AND DIDN'T WANT TO PAY DEALER ESTIMATED FIX AT UP TO 800 DOLLARS. IN 2007, WE PURCHASED A 2007 HONDA CRV TO TOW, FOUR WHEELS DOWN. WE PURCHASED THE BLUE OX AVENTA LX, BX7445 TOW BAR CLASS IV (10,000 LB FOR A 2 INCH RECEIVER) AND THE BASE PLATE BX2246 MADE FOR THE 2007 HONDA CR-V\, WE FOUND THAT THE FRONT FASCIA OF THE HONDA HAD PULLED AWAY AND UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, DISCOVERED THE BLUE OX BASE PLATE HAD FAILED. TO BEGIN, I RECENTLY PURCHASED DIRECTLY FROM MANLY HONDA, IN MARIN COUNTY, CA, EARLIER THIS JAN/FEB OF 2007 A BRAND-NEW 2007 HONDA CR-V EXL, $28K. A FIRST-TIME CAR BUYER, I HAD PAID IN FULL USING MY HARD-EARNED MONEY WHAT I BELIEVED TO BE A RELIABLE, DEPENDABLE AND TROUBLE-FREE CAR. ALAS, I BEGAN NOTICING SOME IRREGULARITIES WITH THE CAR SOON THEREAFTER. TO NAME BUT A FEW, THEY ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1) A TAPPING SOUND IN THE BACK OF MY CAR; 2) A WET SPOT NOTED ON THE FLOOR OF MY GARAGE UNDER THE HOOD AREA; 3) INTERMITTENT INABILITY TO START THE CAR WHEREBY THE BATTERY LIGHT WOULD COME ON; AND 4) INABILITY TO ACCELERATE, BUT SUDDEN SURGE THEREAFTER WHEN DRIVING. I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE IN TO BE SERVICED ON MONDAY, AUGUST 13, 2007. LATER THAT AFTERNOON I RECEIVED A CALL FROM SF HONDA, THE SERVICE DEALER, TO ADVISE THAT: 1) THE TAPPING SOUND IN THE BACK OF MY CAR IS DUE TO A WELDING DEFECT. HAVING JACKED UP THE CAR AND REMOVED ALL THE BACK PANELS TO THE VEHICLE, THEY HAD DETERMINED THAT THE DEFECTIVE WELD OR WELDS WERE LOCATED FURTHER WITHIN THE VEHICLE AND MY CAR WOULD NEED TO BE SENT TO AN AUTO BODY SHOP TO BE FURTHER STRIPPED APART TO DETERMINE THE NUMBER OF DEFECTIVE WELDS IN QUESTION. 2) A POWDER TEST PERFORMED ON MY ENGINE HAD DETERMINED THAT IT WAS A TRANSMISSION LEAK AND THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. 3) THEY HAD YET TO DETERMINE WHY MY CAR WOULD FAIL TO START AND THE BATTERY LIGHT APPEAR; AND 4) THE SUDDEN SURGING OF MY VEHICLE ONCE I HAD STEPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR WAS DUE TO THE DEFECTIVE LEAK IN THE TRANSMISSION. UPON HEARING THIS, I WAS FLABBERGASTED. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT A BRAND-NEW CAR, A HONDA WHICH IS NOTED FOR ITS RELIABILITY, WOULD ENCOUNTER SUCH PROBLEMS? AND AT 3,158 MILES? AND SIMULTANEOUSLY?
