The contact owns a 2012 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the steering wheel started shaking, and the vehicle vibrated abnormally. The contact stated that the vehicle had previously received an alignment and tire rotation. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that the drive shaft might need to be replaced, but the vehicle needed a more extensive diagnostic test. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 15-076 (Vibration While Driving at Highway Speeds); however, the vehicle was not covered under the TSB. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

Complete rear tire assembly came loose from the unibody frame from rust. Not a drop of rust on the body of the car.Thank god we weren’t on the highway. they told me it was unfixable.Thank you Honda.And the recall stopped at 2011? Honda obviously doesn’t care about safety and human life.
The contact owns a 2012 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that an abnormal grinding was coming from the engine. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact also stated that after coming to a complete stop, the vehicle would hesitate while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact's husband spoke with the dealer and was informed that there were no recalls on the VIN. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 23,000.
While I was driving the car, an indicator with "Battery" symbol showed up on the monitor. All off a sudden I see all the lights went ON/OFF and I couldn't steer the wheel. The Power Steering stopped working and the car was running. Since I was near a 4-way stop sign, I managed to pull my car on the side without an accident. Then I got roadside assistance to tow my car to a mechanic shop. They said the "Alternator" need to be replaced. I did that and went for a "Battery" checkup based on the indicator. The battery was good. It would have been a life threatening incident if I were somewhere on a highway. I wanted to make sure this is taken care seriously by the manufacturer and find a fix. Because it just impacts all electrical things and we can't steer the car!
I was at a corner waiting for traffic to clear so I could make a turn left. When I started to accelerate the vehicle started to hesitate and continued. The on coming car had to slam on their brakes and swerve to avoid hitting my passenger side. Since that time I had found out there was a service bulletin relating to this problem. Honda Service Bulletin 17-040. This is my granddaughters car and now I am reluctant to let her drive the vehicle. It is a very serious safety issue!! My frustration is that when I have discussed the issue with 2 different Honda dealers they didn't disclose there was a bulleting but rather recommended changing the transmission fluid and the information was confusing. One dealer recommended changing the fluid once and another recommended I change it three times at the same appointment. Since the incident I have had an opportunity to drive my other granddaughters 2011 Honda CRV and it is displaying the same shudder issue on acceleration and when you are at 40 miles and try to accelerate which she noticed. Obviously, if you were trying to pass another vehicle on a two lane highway and it started the shudder you would be involved in a head on crash resulting in serious injury or death. I believe there should be a recall to correct this problem. The cost to replace the torque converter is $3,000 +. The bulletin 17-040 states the affect vehicles are 2012-14. It needs to be revised to include 2011 Honda CRV vehicle. I found the bulletin myself through a group that shares information regarding Honda CRV vehicles. The bulletin was issued on May 20, 2017 06492 Version 1. The vehicle number for the 2011 Honda CRV is 5J6RE4H72BL017198

ADVISED 2 CHANGE DIFFERENTIAL FLUID (57,000 MI) CHARGED TO CHANGE DIFFERENTIAL FLUID, BUT THERE IS A JUDDER WHEN ACCELERATING IN LOW GEARS. IT STOPS WHEN EASING UP ON THE GAS PEDAL. IT TYPICALLY OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE SHIFTS (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) BETWEEN THE 1ST AND 2ND GEARS. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IT IS BY REMOVING FOOT FROM GAS PEDAL OR ACCELERATING CAR QUICKLY TO HIGHER SPEED. THE ISSUE AFFECTS THE ABILITY TO SAFELY ACCELERATE TO PROPER SPEED. BEGINS WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOPPED POSITION ALL THE WAY UP UNTIL CAR REACHES ABOUT 40-45 MILES PER HOUR. OCCURS ON ALL TYPES OF ROAD CONDITIONS BUT IS VERY PRONOUNCED WHEN DRIVING ON A FLAT SURFACE.APPROX.MAY, 2019 I WAS STOPPING 4 A LIGHT-CAR ACCELERATED ON OWN-PUT IN NEUTRAL,BUT RPM SHOT UP AGAIN. VTC ACTUATOR MAKES AN EXTREMELY LOUD NOISE AND VIBRATES WHEN STARTING VEHICLE. THIS IS CAUSING THE TIMING CHAIN TO SLIP AND CHIP\LOOSE TEETH. ALSO CAUSES LOW OR LACK OF OIL PRESSURE WHICH CAUSES THE DAMAGE TO THE TIMING CHAIN. LOSE OF OIL PRESSURE HAS CAUSED CRACKS IN THE OIL GASKET AS WELL. HONDA HAS ADMITTED THAT THE VTC ACTUATOR IS A DEFECTIVE PART. HOWEVER, HONDA WILL NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBLY FOR REPLACEMENT OR REPAIR OF THE VTC ACTUATOR OR FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED DUE TO THE DEFECTIVE PART. EVERY TIME CAR IS STARTED AFTER KEPT IDLE OF MORE THAN AN HOUR THE RATTLE SOUND IS REAL LUD. LOCAL TECHNICIAN, PAUL'S AUTOMOTIVE SAID YESTERDAY, IT IS REAL IMPOARTANT IT BE LOOKED AT BY HONDA. SO TAKIN IT TO SUBURBAN HONDA TODAY 8/16/17.
HONDA HAS BEEN IN STALLING DEFECTIVE VTC ACTUATORS IN THE CRV AND ACCORD MODELS. ON COLD START, THERE IS A LOUD RATTLE FROM THE ENGINE. THERE IS A BULLETIN ON THIS PROBLEM. IT CLEARLY STATES THAT IT APPLIES TO ALL 2012 CRV'S. HONDA SUPPORT HOWEVER IS ATTEMPTING TO AVOID REPAIR OF THE PROBLEM BY STATING THAT IT ONLY APPLIES TO CERTAIN VINS. THE DEFECTIVE VTC ACTUATOR HAS BEEN KNOWN TO HONDA SINCE AT LEAST 2012. HOWEVER THEY HAVE CONTINUED TO INSTALL THE DEVICE IN MODELS THROUGH 2015 AT LEAST, PERHAPS LATER. I HAVE A 2012 HONDA CRV EXL + NAVI 2WD AND LAST 3-4 YEARS I VISITED HONDA DEALERSHIPS MORE THAN 7 TIMES FOR THE PROBLEM. VEHICLE HAS CURRENTLY APPROXIMATELY 30K MILES AND HONDA PART # 44500-T0A-A00 WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY 3 TIMES. THERE IS STILL OIL LEAK FROM PASSENGER SITE INTERMEDIATE DRIVE HALF SHAFT BEARING. LAST TIME VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED ABOUT 14 MONTHS AGO AT HONDA DEALERSHIP AND THE LEAK CAME BACK AGAIN. HONDA REGIONAL MECHANIC LOOKED AT IT AND COULDN'T IDENTIFY THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. (NO HELP THERE...) THE VEHICLE IS STILL UNDER POWER TRAIN WARRANTY (AND ITS RUNNING OUT...) I CALLED LAST HONDA DEALER AGAIN AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD PROBABLY REPLACE THE SAME PART AGAIN AND AGAIN UNTIL LEAK STOPS. AND FOR HOW LONG REPEAT THE SAME REPAIR? I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE NOT ABLE ACCURATELY DIAGNOSE THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM AND KEEP REPAIRING WRONG THING. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THERE WERE THREE INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE CONTACT SUFFERED FROM A HAIRLINE FRACTURE ON THE ARM. THE CONTACT ALSO WENT INTO EARLY LABOR DUE TO THE INCIDENT AND HAD AN EMERGENCY C-SECTION TO A CHILD BORN NINE WEEKS EARLY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE NEWBORN CHILD SUFFERED FROM DISABILITIES. THE CHILD OCCUPANT SUFFERED FROM A FOOT INJURY. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V143000 (POWER TRAIN) AS A POSSIBLE REASON FOR THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. SHE EXITED THE CAR BRIEFLY THEN RETURNED, OPENING THE DOOR TO TURN OFF THE IGNITION. STANDING OUTSIDE THE CAR BUT INSIDE THE OPEN DOOR ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE, SHE REACHED IN AND SWITCHED OFF THE IGNITION. THE CAR STARTED TO ROLL BACKWARD, KNOCKING HER TO THE GROUND, AND DRAGGING HER ABOUT 30 FEET DOWN THE DRIVEWAY AND ACROSS THE STREET. CAR CAME TO A STOP WHEN IT HIT THE CURB ACROSS THE STREET. A FIREMAN WHO ARRIVED FIRST ON THE SCENE VERIFIED THE CAR WAS STILL IN PARK. WIFE WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL BY AMBULANCE AND SUFFERED A BROKEN SHOULDER, SEVERE ROAD RASH INJURIES TO HER TORSO, AND OTHER BRUISES. THE CR-V DRIVER SIDE DOOR HAS DAMAGE, NOT BEING ABLE TO CLOSE PROPERLY, AND HAS A PIECE OF BLACK PLASTIC MOLDING TORN AWAY FROM THE LOWER SECTION OF THE FRAME.

ON COLD STARTUPS THERE IS A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHICH LASTS FOR A FEW SECONDS. THE GRINDING NOISE IS HEARD USUALLY AFTER THE CAR IS LEFT IDLE OVERNIGHT & DOES NOT OCCUR ON AN EVERYDAY BASIS. MY MECHANIC IDENTIFIED IT AS THE VTC ACTUATOR (CAM} & SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF BEFORE IT SHUTS DOWN THE ENGINE & THEN IT BECOMES AN EXPENSIVE ENGINE OVERHAUL. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE HONDA SERVICE DEPT.(2 PLACES) & TOLD IT MUST BE VERIFIED TO BE REPLACED. THE TROUBLE IS WHEN I LEAVE THE CAR IT DOESN'T HAPPEN, AS I SAID IT HAPPENS RANDOMLY. HONDA KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM (BULLETIN:09-010) BUT REFUSES TO REPLACE THE PART WITHOUT VERIFICATION. I BELIEVE IT'S UNREASONABLE TO LEAVE MY VEHICLE FOR A LONG LENGTH OF TIME & GO WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION. I EVEN RECORDED THE SOUND & HONDA WON'T ACCEPT THAT. THE NEXT MORNING AND A FEW MORNINGS AFTER THAT, THE CAR MADE A LOUD GRINDING/RATTLING SOUND FOR A FEW SECONDS AFTER THE ENGINE STARTED. AS THE DAYS HAVE GOTTEN COLDER, THE NOISE OCCURS ALMOST EVERY TIME THE CAR STARTS. I THOUGHT THE CAR HAD A FAILING STARTER AND BROUGHT IT IN FOR SERVICE. THE DEALER TOLD ME IT ISN'T A STARTER ISSUE BUT IS CAUSED BY A VTC ACTUATOR IN THE ENGINE. THE DEVICE CONTROLS VALVE TIMING AS THE ENGINE RUNS. THE DEALER TECH REP EVEN HAD A VTC (A SMALL GEAR) ON HIS DESK WHICH HE SHOWED ME AS WE SPOKE. HE ASSURED ME HONDA IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND "IS WORKING ON IT". WELL, IT TURNS OUT HONDA HAS BEEN "WORKING ON IT" SINCE 2008. THEY ISSUED SERVICE BULLETIN # 09-010 ON OCTOBER 21, 2011. THE INTERNET IS FILLED WITH HONDA OWNERS OF VARIOUS YEARS AND MODELS AFTER 2011 COMPLAINING ABOUT HONDA'S LACKADAISICAL ATTITUDE TO THIS ISSUE. MANY HAVE HAD REPLACEMENT CVT'S INSTALLED AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE ONLY TO HAVE THE PROBLEM RETURN. THE NOISE IS CAUSED WHEN COLD OIL DOESN'T FLOW TO THE GEAR AT START. THE GRINDING IS THE SOUND OF DRY METAL ON METAL. I AM NEITHER A MECHANIC NOR ENGINEER BUT I KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT CARS AND ENGINES. IF A DEVICE THAT CONTROLS VALVE TIMING FAILS THE ENGINE CAN SUDDENLY LOSE POWER OR EVEN SEIZE UP. I THINK THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN AS THESE GEARS GO THROUGH MORE STARTS WITHOUT PROPER LUBRICATION. I CALLED HONDA OF AMERICA AND FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THEM. I ALSO ASKED FOR A LETTER VERIFYING THAT THEY KNOW OF THE PROBLEM AND WOULD COVER ANY ENGINE REPAIR CAUSED BY THIS ISSUE UNDER WARRANTY. SO FAR, THERE HAS BEEN NO RESPONSE. I BELIEVE THAT HONDA SHOULD RECALL THE AFFECTED CARS AND MAKE THE REPAIR BEFORE THERE IS A SERIOUS REAR END COLLISION OR OTHER ACCIDENT AS A RESULT OF ENGINE POWER FAILING AT A CRITICAL TIME.
