I own a 2014 Honda CR-V. Since around November 2022 I have repeatedly experienced an intermittent “bounce” or shudder when accelerating, especially around 20–25 mph and sometimes at higher speeds (around 45 mph and above). The vehicle feels like it briefly loses power or slips before catching again, and the check-engine light has come on and off during this period. I took the vehicle to Stockton Honda (CA) multiple times and consistently reported this bounce/shudder on take-off. Each time, the focus was on brakes, rotors, tires, or other maintenance items. I was never told there might be an engine or timing-chain issue or that the vehicle could be unsafe to drive. The bounce/shudder never went away. I have also been involved in multiple low-speed collisions while taking off from a stop in the past few years, and I am concerned that this hesitation/loss of power may have contributed. In late 2025, Honda of Elk Grove performed a full diagnostic, retrieved a P031 code, and told me the most likely cause is a timing-chain problem. I was advised that the vehicle is not recommended to be driven until the timing chain is replaced because the engine could be severely damaged or fail while driving. The technician refused to take the car on the freeway due to safety concerns. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA is aware that a possible timing-chain defect or failure in 2014 Honda CR-V vehicles can present as a bounce/shudder at low speeds during acceleration, with potential loss of power and increased risk of rear-end collisions, and that this condition may be missed or misdiagnosed by dealers for an extended period.

My 2014 CRV has 83,131 miles and I am a careful driver and like to keep my vehicle in top shape. The service done was replaced outer tie rod ends that were cracked and I could have lost control , replaced front lower control arms, replaced front struts, replaced rear sway bar bushings, reseal coolant passage housing , head gaskets, my vehicle could have quit in traffic. The top of my CRV has paint faded and gone to a white powder look. There are things that a car with low miles driven carefully and taken very good car of should not be happening. There should be recalls because there are issues with timing chains and fuel system. I am scared to drive it anymore. I won't stay loyal to Honda now and I am very disappointed that they know these issues and haven't attempted to fix them.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the VTC actuator, resulting in damages to the engine. The contact was informed that a partial rebuild of the engine was required. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 16-012. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. Rattles and shakes between 25 and 40 mph, bad actuator will cause timing failure. It only has 71,000 miles. Honda is well aware of this defect in this vehicle. When will they be held accountable to fix this issue? At 33k I was definitely taken for a ride! No engine warning light either!

Purchased our 2014 CR-V [XXX], used one owner, 55301 mileage. Very little driving the next three years due to the pandemic. Summer of 2023 we were driving from Buffalo to [XXX] , first 30 miles, severe hesitation, amber lights on, until reaching 70mph. Hesitation stopped but lights stayed on. By August the TPMS indicator, malfunction indicator lamp and other lights came on, again. We reset according to the manual, but this was just the beginning of this process happening over and over again. During dealer testing Code PO 341 came up. Had it tested at another place before taking it to West Herr Honda and was told needed Timing chain replacement with VTC. This was done at a cost of $2232.06 with car mileage of 63159. We were sad and disappointed. Research shows that Honda is very much aware of over 500 plus recorded problems with the 2014 CR-V not to mention unreported problems. The model should be recalled before lives are lost. Car still hesitates but evidently due to a different problem. On 2/21/24 as we were exiting a Hospital Parking Garage and I slowed down to stop at exit where road is, the engine suddenly had an uncontrolled acceleration. Difficult to stop but I pressed hard on brakes (which alone did not stop vehicle)and immediately put gearbox in Neutral, stopping vehicle before it made it on the street. After that, no more incidents on 2/21 or 2/22.. Should be noted I had total of 3 such incidents in past 4-5 months, this was the third. One occurred as getting out a store parking lot, slowing down at street interface and suddenly engine acceleration, used same technique as above. Another was at end of our street coming to a stop at interface to another street, same occurrence. In each of the occurrences I can verify that it was neither a car mat issue (it is anchored in car) not an accidental stepping o accelerator. . Have not contacted dealer or Honda as I note neither has ever found an answer to similar occurrences with others. For now drive carefully and one hand on shift lever most of the time when coming to a stop as occurrences appear to be far apart.

VTC failed July 2018. Honda stated I must pay for the repair costing $662. According to Honda receipt the R5A new VTC was installed. Now it's January 2024 and car VTC failing again. Note: When I changed the valve cover gasket I looked at the VTC and noticed that it says R44. Basically they lied about the repair and put another of the defective VTC. Obviously a much more expensive repair this time due to Honda negligence and dishonesty.

For over a year now, my Honda CRV 2014 has been producing a rattling noise from the engine on every cold startup. This happens regardless of the temperature outside. When I initially heard it, it was sporadic, again, on cold startup - so the rattling didn't occur every time. Over time though, it will occur every morning, or after the car has been sittinwith the engine off for at least a few hours. I asked a mechanic to look at it after a few months after I had first heard it, because it continued to happen, even periodically. As it only happened on cold startup, I could not reproduce it for the mechanic - he could not find any obvious issue. After a few more months, I recorded the issue on video (and audio). The same mechanic said it may be the VTC actuator. I had another mechanic look at the same video, and he said it was almost certainly the VTC actuator. He said Honda had recalled the vehicle because of the VTC actuator issue and sent me a link to a webpage with the information. It turns out it was only a technical bulletin rather than a recall. I called a Honda dealership and provided them information about the issue. They asked for my VIN and told me there was no recall after searching my VIN. After some discussion with them, wherein I referenced the technical bulletin and inquired if Honda would provide a replacement for the known issue, the representative said since it wasn't recalled, they could only diagnose and repair at full cost. After I continued to press the issue, she asked if I wanted the telephone number for Honda corporate, so I could send them my complaint. I have no yet taken my car in for repair, as the cost will be very expensive. I don't understand why Honda has not recalled the vehicles over this issue, given the fact that it is an issue they have admitted to, and it apparently is a potentially dangerous and life-threatening issue.

Loud grinding noise when starting a cold engine. Honda dealer replicated noise and stated that it was the VTC Actuator-which needed to be replaced along with the Cam Chain for a total of $1,392.23 before the Florida 7% sales tax of $97.46 totaling$1,489.69. Other manufacturing years for Honda received a recall notice. I believe that my 2014 Honda CR-V should be included in that recall so that the dealer may reimburse me for this acknowledged defect in the Honda engine.

The car makes a very loud grinding sound when starting. A metal on metal sound. This was fixed in October 2021 when vehicle had 77,500 miles for about $800. Dealership stated not covered by any recall or warranty. Service agreement states replaced VTC actuator with VCG set. Now, June 2023, the car is making the exact same noise. Many honda owners are writing about this issue. Honda corporation not taking any ownership for this issue. The "fix" is NOT a fix. Honda is being complacent. Owners are paying for this every 18-24 months. This needs to be addresssed by the company and not having owners pay over and over again to TEMPORARILY fix this issue.

Upon cold start, the VTC actuator makes a grinding noise. It also makes the noise when car not driven for 5 hours or more. It lasts about 1 to 2 seconds upon releasing ignition key at start. No Check Engine light or dash warning lights come on. Concerned about timing chain damage. The car only has 33,385 miles on it. Research on web, indicates multiple reports of same issue.

The engine has rattled noises when starting, I look online and a lot of people have the same problem, they said the VTC actuator’s problem, even after they changed it, the noise is back 1-2 years. Honda needs to recall and replace this part for Honda’s customers.

There is a rattling noise coming from the engine area at extreme cold startups since I had the car at 24,000 miles on it. When having the car parked with the emergency brake on at an incline and after leaving it ther for a few days, after I press the release on the brake after starting the car, the emergency brake sticks and the car won't move forward when accelerating or backward when releasing the brakes or accelerating. I have to repeatedly press and release the emergency brake to allow the car to release the brake from the wheel for the car to move forward. There is repeatedly a build up of rust on the rear wheels when the car is exposed to humid and wet conditions due to some flaw in the design, and it causes the car the have a loud thumping noise when applying the breaks . I have had to get the rear brakes refinished or shaved down to smooth them out repeatedly.

The VTC (Variable Timing Chain) Actuator is faulty. It cause premature wear on the vehicle’s engine. I had mine replaced at 148,648 miles and it is now needing a replacement again at 162,560 miles. When performing a cold start on the vehicle, user will hear a 2-3 second grinding noise coming from the engine. When I had to replace the actuator the first time, the wear was so bad on my engine, it also meant I had to get a new timing chain as too much stress had been put on mine and the chain began to stretch.

The engine had been having an oil consumption issue. I was back and forth with Honda who kept pushing me around. Filed complaints there as well. The first I was ever notified there was a problem is when I brought my car in for service and was told the oil was barely present. Was notified by the mechanic this is a known issue that should be reported. I reported and nothing was really done. They would bring me in for an oil change, I would come back and they would somehow "forget" to document I returned. Was told not to add oil and my car stalled and I crashed into a parking lot with my child in the back seat on a busy street. Nothing was done to help me with the issue. I brought in every single oil change I had ever had on the vehicle and I was told I was not doing the routine maintenance even though I had proof. This is a huge concern for safety as me or my child could have been injured and Honda did nothing to help or even attempt to help with the concern.

Bad grinding noise on cold start. Defective actuator. This can damage engine. CRV only has 58,000 miles. Honda has known about this for years and needs to issue a recall. Class action law suits have been filed in California & Illinois. Technical Service Bulletin 16-012.

When starting the car (cold), the motor would start and then continue trying and made a grinding noise for about 2 seconds. Once the car was hot and off for less than 5 min, it would start normally. After 5 min off, it would make the noise again. This would happen by either using manually the key, or the remote starter. Went to the dealer and they said they needed to replace the VTC Actuator and ended up spending little over $1K to repair it. Looking online and in this site, I've found multiple complaints for this issue starting in 2015 for this model. There are also VTC Actuator known issues for Honda models between 2008 and 2012, so it is not something new for them. This should require a recall as it is a manufacturer's issue involving the engine, which could potentially escalate to something more serious and dangerous. Thanks,

Current Mileage = 51K I started to hear rattle sound when start up the engine when the mileage is around 20K. Brought to dealer where I bought new from them and was told they couldn't hear anything. No fixed or repair since then. Now, the rattle noise sound is much louder. On the web site forum there are too many people experienced the same thing I got. This problem should have been a recall for Honda. I jut got a quote said to replace the VTC actuator and chain timing belt ~$2000 plus. But again several people in the forum did the repair and the problem came back after 1 year. Upon cold start-up, loud noise comes @ initial start for a second or two when turning the key. The car then starts up and the noise goes away. It won't happen after the car is initially started. It will occur again when the car sits for a couple of hours. My mechanic said that it's somewhere in one of the cylinders.

VTC actuator is faulty and HONDA will not replace and now I'm being told that I need a new TIMING CHAIN also from the VTC actuator not functioning properly. A TIMING CHAIN that should last the life of the engine has FAILED at 90K miles. Why don't you make HONDA issue a recall instead of sticking the owners with large expensive repair bills when HONDA has issued a service bulletin that the actuator is flawed. This is out of their service bulletin 16-012..... "The variable valve timing control (VTC) actuator is defective. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the VTC actuator. "

2014 Honda CRV rattling noise upon cold start at 20,000 miles into owning vehicle. Dealership could not locate the problem nor witness the problem each time we reported this whenever we brought the car in for oil changes...Problem became progressively worse over the years. Now that the rattling is essentially heard every time the car is started, we have taken it in. We are told we need a "new engine" because we need a new VTC actuator. We are also told that the car is burning oil. The new engine costs $4800 (NJ). Will this solve the problem that obviously is a Honda defect? Will the new engine have VTC actuators that will not fall apart in 1 year?... Honda has known about this problem for YEARS!

We are having repeat problems with the VTC Actuator. This was replaced in 2018 under warranty but has since recurred. Our car is now at the dealer with a diagnostic of timing chain, vtc actuator, and cam gear for a cost of 2100 dollars. It is no longer under warranty and the cost is being passed on to us. This complaint is all over the internet and it is a Honda defect. Please work to support consumers and issue a recall promptly. Honda needs to fix this issue. We also, like many other, burn through oil. It’s amazing how everyone is reporting the same issues in cold starts. (Rattles).

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

ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE IN MY 2014 HONDA CR-V WHILE I WAS DRIVING TO WORK THE MORNING OF JANUARY 19, 2017. I PURCHASED THE CR-V NEW IN EARLY 2015. AT THE TIME OF THE ENGINE FIRE THERE WAS 49,585 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THE ONLY WORK EVER COMPLETED ON THE CR-V WERE TIMELY OIL AND FILTER CHANGES, AND TIRE ROTATIONS. THERE WAS NOT ANY SUGGESTED OR REQUIRED WORK THAT WAS NOT COMPLETED. THERE WAS NOTHING UNUSUAL WITH THE CAR, NO NOISES, NO ODORS, AND I WAS THE LAST PERSON TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO THIS DAY. FORENSICS REPORT CONCLUDED THAT THE FIRE ORIGINATED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT IN AND AROUND THE FUEL SYSTEM. AT 8:50AM ON THURSDAY MORNING JANUARY 19, 2017 I LEFT MY HOME IN NJ TO TRAVEL TO WORK 14 MILES AWAY. IN LEAVING HOME THE CR-V STARTED NORMAL. I WAS ABOUT 10 MINUTES INTO THE TYPICAL 45 MINUTE DRIVE. I WAS DRIVING ON A TWO LANE HIGHWAY. I WAS SLOWING DOWN TO ABOUT 10 MPH TO MERGE INTO ONE LANE. I NOTICED LIGHT WHITE SMOKE COMING IN FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE VENT. I THEN NOTICED MORE GRAYISH SMOKE COMING FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ENGINE HOOD. I PULLED OVER OFF THE HIGHWAY ONTO THE SHOULDER. THERE WAS NOTHING UNUSUAL ON THE PANEL OF THE CAR, NO LIGHTS, NO GAUGES, THE TEMP WAS NORMAL. I CALLED 911 AT ABOUT 9:01AM. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HAD THE FIRE OUT IN ABOUT 12 MINUTES. THE CR-V OF COURSE WAS A COMPLETE LOSS.

ON 3/5/17 I WAS WITH A EXFORD ENGINEER WHO WITNESSED IT HAPPEN IN TRAFFIC. WHEN I PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK TO TRY AND STOP THE CRV, THE ENGINE REVVED WAY UP BEFORE IT SNAPPED AND WENT BACK INTO A NORMAL DRIVE SITUATION AND WENT DOWN TO NORMAL RPM. IT NOW HAS BEEN REPORTED TO HONDA 3X AND BACK TO A DEALER TWICE. I WILL NOW CALL HONDA AGAIN BUT THIS IS GETTING MORE DANGEROUS EACH TIME. IT HAS HAPPENED IN CA AND AZ BUT WHILE REOCCURRING, IT'S NOT A REGULAR ITEM. IT APPEARS IN THE SOFTWARE OR ENGINE COMPUTER TO HIM.

MY ELDERLY MOTHER DIED IN A FIRE IN HER 2014 HONDA CR-V. THERE WERE NO WITNESSES TO THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE. THE CAR WAS FIRST SEEN WHEN FULLY ENGULFED BY FLAME, 10 TO 20 MINUTES AFTER MY MOTHER WAS SEEN GETTING INTO HER CAR. UNKNOWN IF SHE LET IT IDLE BEFORE DRIVING. SHE DROVE ABOUT 1200 FEET. HER CAR WAS FOUND IN WET IVY AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. HER KEY WAS IN HER HAND, AND SHE WAS LEANING TOWARDS THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR, APPARENTLY TRYING TO ESCAPE THE FIRE. (BECAUSE THE CAR WAS ON A HILL, LEANING TOWARDS THE PASSENGER SIDE, FLAMES FROM BENEATH THE CAR WERE STRONGEST ON THE DRIVER SIDE AND WOULD HAVE BLOCKED HER EXIT. THE PASSENGER SIDE WAS NOT COMPLETELY BURNED.) IT IS IMPROBABLE THAT THE IVY IGNITED BECAUSE IT WAS LATE FALL IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST AND THE WEATHER HAD BEEN VERY WET FOR DAYS. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR, AND THE SERVICE DEPT HAS SAID NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. YESTERDAY, I TOOK THE CAR IN TO HAVE IT EXAMINED AND REPAIRED, AND THE HONDA SERVICE MANAGER CONFIRMED THAT THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM A DEFECTIVE VTC ACTUATOR. HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT HONDA IS CONTINUING TO PRODUCE THE SAME DEFECTIVE ACTUATOR THEY HAVE PRODUCED FOR THE PAST 8 YEARS AND THAT THE HONDA CORPORATION WILL NOT ALLOW DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENTS TO REPLACE THEM. "THEY'RE ALL FAULTY, SO IT WOULDN'T MATTER." THIS DEFECT IN A CRITICAL ENGINE PART MUST BE ADDRESSED AND THE PART REPLACED.

WAITED A FEW MORE MONTHS AND THEN CONTACTED LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP TO BRING IN THE CAR TO HAVE THEM DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THIS WAS DONE ON JANUARY 9TH, 2015. DEALERSHIP SAID THEY WERE AWARE OF SOME OTHER 2014 CRV'S HAVING SAME/SIMILAR PROBLEM AS MINE. THEY FURTHER STATED THAT THE PROBLEM IS A VTC-ACTUATOR AND THAT HONDA HAD BEEN AWARE OF IT FOR SOME TIME. I WAS TOLD THAT HONDA HAS TO RE-ENGINEER THE PART AND THAT IT HOPEFULLY BE READY BY THE SUMMER OF 2015. STILL NO WORD FROM THE DEALERSHIP ON THE STATUS OF THE RE-ENGINEERED PART BEING AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. I WILL FOLLOW UP WITH THEM TODAY.

HE SAID HONDA IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT IS NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. IT IS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE VTC ACTUATOR WHEN IT GETS COLD. HE SHOWED ME AN EMAIL FROM HONDA THAT SPECIFICALLY SAYS TO QUIT REPLACING VTC ACTUATORS BECAUSE IT IS NOT HELPING FIX THE PROBLEM. IT'S AN ENGINEERING PROBLEM WITH THE VTC ACTUATOR SO REPLACING IT WITH AN IDENTICAL UNIT WILL NOT HELP.. HE THEN PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THAT IT IS NOT HURTING MY CAR IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM. AFTER SEVERAL MORE DAYS OF LOUD GRINDING NOISES EACH MORNING; I SPOKE WITH HONDA CUSTOMER SERVICE OVER TWITTER. HONDA REPEATED WHAT THE SERVICE TECH TOLD ME THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE VTC ACTUATOR BUT ARE CURRENTLY DOING NOTHING ABOUT IT. THEY SAID, "WE ARE AWARE OF THE CONCERN AND ARE LOOKING TO SEE WHAT WE COULD DO TO REDUCE IT". I THEN ASKED THEM TO EXPLAIN WHAT EXACTLY IN THE VTC ACTUATOR IS MAKING THE NOISE. I WAS TOLD, "I APOLOGIZE BUT INFORMATION ON WHAT IS MAKING THE NOISE IS NOT AVAILABLE"... NOT KIDDING. THEY ALSO SAID, "THE NOISE DOESN'T AFFECT THE DRIVEABILITY OR RELIABILITY OF THE VEHICLE. WE APOLOGIZE BUT CURRENTLY THERE ARE NO REPAIRS FOR THIS." I AM SUPPOSE TO BELIEVE THAT THIS IS NOT HURTING MY VEHICLE, BUT THEY REFUSE TO TELL ME WHAT IS CAUSING THE NOISE IN THE VTC ACTUATOR? IT SOUNDS LIKE THEY ARE CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS TO SEE IF A RECALL WOULD BE MORE COST EFFECTIVE THEN REPAIRING THE CARS OF US COLD WEATHER DRIVERS WHEN THE TIME COMES AND OUR ENGINES FAIL. THE ENGINE DOES NOT RESPOND (INTERMITTENTLY) TO THE THROTTLE. THIS MAKES FOR A VERY DICEY SITUATION WHEN TURNING ACROSS ONCOMING TRAFFIC OR ACCELERATING FROM A FULL STOP, E.G., A TRAFFIC SIGNAL. TO OVERCOME THE PROBLEM, YOU HAVE TO QUICKLY LET UP ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND JUST AS QUICKLY APPLY PRESSURE TO THE PEDAL TO GET THE ENGINE TO RESPOND. DURING THESE EPISODES THE ENGINE IS JUST IDLING. I TOOK THE CAR TO A DEALERSHIP WHICH PERFORMED DIAGNOSTICS. THE ANSWER WAS THE TYPICAL ONE THAT YOU RECEIVE FROM A DEALERSHIP: 'WE COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM". FROM POSTINGS ON THE INTERNET, THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR YEARS WITH HONDA VEHICLES. IN FACT A DEALERSHIP SERVICE WRITER TOLD ME THAT HIS BROTHER HAS A HONDA WHICH HAS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ALMOST FROM THE DAY HE PURCHASED IT. I'M NOT JUST IMAGINING THIS. THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE THE THROTTLE BODY RELAY OR THE THROTTLE BODY ITSELF WHICH WOULD BE VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE. THIS ISN'T JUST MY IMAGINATION AT WORK. ON COLD DAYS I HEAR GRINDING NOISE WHEN I START MY CAR, FEW SECOND NOISE THEN ITS FINE. I NOTICED IT STARTED IN DECEMBER WHEN THE COLD WEATHER HITS TEXAS. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN DAILY ONLY ON COLD DAYS AS CAR SITS IN DRIVEWAY. SOME DAYS IT WILL BE COLD AND IT WILL BE FINE AND OTHER DAYS ANOTHER COLD DAY AND IT WILL HAPPEN FOR A FEW SECONDS. MY CAR HAS SLIGHTLY OVER 8000 MILES. I FIND THIS TOO SOON TO HAVE ANY ISSUES. I TOOK IT TO LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP JANUARY 16 WHERE CAR SAT OVER NIGHT TO DUPLICATE THE SOUND AND THE CAR DID NOT MAKE THAT NOISE. THE WEATHER WAS IN THE 40'S AND NOISE COULD NOT BE HEARD. MY CAR WAS STILL AT DEALERSHIP ON JANUARY 19 AND AGAIN NO SOUND WAS HEARD FROM CERTIFIED HONDA TECH. I OPENED UP HONDA CARE TICKET FOR A SOLUTION AND A PUSH FROM THEM TO REPLACE THE VTC ACTUATOR. THE TECH PLAYED DUMB AND SAID I WAS THE FIRST OWNER TO HAVE THIS COMPLIANT AND THEREFORE COULD NOT PIN POINT THE PROBLEM AND COULD NOT FIX SOMETHING HE DID NOT KNOW WHAT IT COULD BE. I TOOK MY CAR FROM THEM AFTER SITTING THERE SINCE FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND MONDAY JAN 19. HONDA CARE DID NOT PUSH THE ISSUE TO THE DEALERSHIP SO I AM CONSIDERING TRADING IN MY CAR. I CANNOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR A FAULTY HONDA PROBLEM. NOW I THE CONSUMER HAVE BEEN DUPED BY THIS IGNORANCE AND LETTING THIS KNOWN ISSUE JUST SIT AROUND AND GET BIGGER WITH CONSUMERS. *TR

SEPTEMBER 2014, 2014 HONDA CRV WITH ~6K MILES STARTED MAKING A LOUD RATTLING NOISE UPON FIRST TURNING IGNITION SWITCH OVER. IT CONTINUED RANDOMLY UPON STARTING FOR ONLY 1-2 SECONDS & STOPS. AS THE WEATHER GOT COLDER, IT HAPPENED MORE OFTEN. TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER ON 10/15/14 & MADE THEM KEEP THE CAR OVERNIGHT TO REPLICATE PROBLEM. PROBLEM WAS DUPLICATED & DETERMINED TO BE VARIABLE TIMING CONTROL (VTC) ACTUATOR; CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY & FIXED. DECEMBER 2014 W/ ~13K MILES SAME ISSUE RESURFACED. CONTACTED DEALERSHIP 01/14/15, HAD THEM PULL UP 10/15/14 REPAIR WORK TO REFERENCE STATED SAME ISSUE IS GOING ON. I WAS TOLD, "... YOU WILL NEED TO SPEAK W/ OUR SERVICE MANAGER XXXX AS THE MFG'R IS AWARE THIS IS A PROBLEM W/ THOUSANDS OF CARS LIKE YOURS & THEY ARE CHOOSING TO NOT DO ANY FURTHER REPAIR WORK FOR THIS PROBLEM BC IT WILL CONTINUE TO HAPPEN IF REPAIRED & THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT...". I WAS THEN TRANSFERRED TO SERVICE MGR & LEFT VOICEMAIL. 01/14/15 NO RESPONSE FROM SVC MGR, TO SPEAK W/ HIM AGAIN; THIS TIME I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE A VOICEMAIL & SVC TECH TOOK MY INFO & SAID SHE WOULD PUT IT ON A POST-IT NOTE ON XXXX'S COMPUTER TO HAVE HIM GIVE ME A CALL BACK. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM W/ HONDA'S GOING BACK TO 2008 INCLUSIVE OF TSB PUBLISHED DOC'S WHICH DEALERS DISMISS UNLESS CONSUMERS BRINGS THEM UP, OF WHICH DEALERS PLAY DUMB TO NOT KNOWING WHAT THE CAR OWNERS ARE TALKING ABOUT. THE PROBLEM IS NOT FIXABLE, ONLY TEMPORARILY DERAILED UNTIL REPAIR BECOMES NECESSARY AGAIN. THE MFG'R IS FORBIDDEN TO FIX THE CAR UNTIL THEY WORK ON A SUITABLE 'COUNTER' MEASURE. FAULTY VTC ACTUATOR AFFECTS ENGINE TIMING, FUEL EFFICIENCY, ELECTRICAL, MECHANICAL, AND BATTER LIFE OF VEHICLE, POTENTIAL CAUSING ELECTRICAL FIRES WHICH CAN BE DEADLY.. *TR

DURING COLD WEATHER (WINTER) WHEN VEHICLE IS STARTED FIRST TIME IN THE MORNING THERE IS A ONE TIME GRINDING NOISE. THIS IS THE 2ND HONDA CRV THAT WE OWN THAT MAKES THIS SAME NOISE. WHEN I PERFORM A GOOGLE SEARCH I FIND SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM MANY HONDA CRV OWNERS FROM MULTIPLE YEARS OF MANUFACTURE OF THE HONDA CRV. THE DEALER HAS INDICATED THAT THIS NOISE ISSUE IS CAUSED BY THE VARIABLE TIMING CONTROL VALVE (VTC) AND THAT HONDA IS WORKING ON A PERMANENT SOLUTION. HONDA HAS BEEN AWARE OF NOISE ISSUE AND SUPPOSEDLY WORKING ON A SOLUTION FOR AT LEAST 2 MODEL YEARS YET NO PERMANENT SOLUTION TO ISSUE HAS BEEN PROVIDED AT THIS TIME. APPLY BRAKES FOR NORMAL STOP, EASE OFF THROTTLE PEDAL. WHEN ROAD IS CLEAR, RELEASE BRAKES, APPLY PRESSURE TO THROTTLE PEDAL. NO RESPONSE. ADD PRESSURE - NO RESPONSE. ADD MORE PRESSURE AND FULL SPEED AHEAD. *TR THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION PUTS YOU HARD AGAINST THE SEAT, WITH SUDDEN REACTION NEEDED TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT WITH THE CAR AHEAD OF YOU GOING THE SAME WAY. ENTERING A FREEWAY COULD BE FUN!!! THIS IS A FREQUENT OCCURANCE, AT ALMOST EVERY STOP AND PROCEED. FROM WHAT I HEAR ABOUT AIR BAGS IN SOME CARS, THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION MAY BE A CAUSE OF AIR BAG RELEASE WHICH WOULD COMPLICATE THE PROBLEM.

I BOUGHT AT 2014 CRV END OF SEPT/OCT OF 2013. UPON THE FIRST SNOW FALL I DROVE THE VEHICLE AND HAD IMMEDIATE PROBLEMS. THE CAR WAS NOT GETTING ANY TRACTION, IT WAS SLIDING AROUND GOING DOWN HILLS AND UPON TRYING TO DRIVE UP HILLS IT WOULD STOP WITHOUT EVEN TRYING TO GO UP. IT WOULD STOP AND WHEELS WOULD SPIN, THE REAR END SPUN TO THE SIDE AND I COULD NOT GET ANYWHERE. THE AMBER AWD LIGHTS CAME ON AND FLASHED, COMBINATION OF BOTH SCENARIOS. I FINALLY GOT IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP AS THE PROBLEM GOT WORSE. THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL HAS BEEN DEEMED DEFECTIVE (OVERHEATING ISSUE TO POINT OF ALMOST GLOWING AND FLUID OVERHEATED). THE OTHER PROBLEM I HAVE HAD IS THAT IF THE CAR WAS PUT INTO 1ST OR 2ND GEAR TO AID SLOWING DOWN ON A HILL, EVEN FROM A STOPPED POSITION, IT WOULD NOT RESPOND. THE CAR SPED UP GOING DOWN THE HILL IN FIRST GEAR TO APPROXIMATELY 40MPH EVEN WITH THE BRAKE ON, WHICH WOULD NOT ENGAGE AND THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES WERE ENGAGING AND NOT EVEN TRYING TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CAR BEHAVED THE SAME EVEN IF ON FLAT GROUND THAT HAD EVEN A DUSTING OF SNOW OR EVEN A LITTLE GRAVEL. THE DEALERSHIP GAVE ME A COURTESY 2014 SAME YEAR AS MINE, IT DROVE MUCH BETTER AND MUCH SAFER THAN MINE PERFORMED AFTER THE FIRST 2 DAYS. I FEEL THE CAR HAS MORE ISSUES THAN JUST THE DIFFERENTIAL AND IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD AS THE LAST 1-2 WEEKS THE CAR HAS HAD NO CONTROL IN ANYTHING OTHER THAN DRY ROADS. IT HAS ALMOST WRECKED MORE THAN ONCE DUE TO THESE ISSUES. THIS VEHICLE IS 3.5 MONTHS OLD AND HAD UNDER 10,000 MILES ON IT AND ALL OF THIS HAS GONE WRONG SINCE THE BEGINNING. *TR
