2022 HONDA CR-V Forward Collision Avoidance Problems

OIL DILUTION, ANIFREEZE DISAPPEARING, LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY THIS PAST SATURDAY, ALL LIGHTS ON DASH CONSTANTLY GOING OFF AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH, VEHICLE RADAR SENSES A CAR IN FRONT WHEN THERE IS NONE AND THE BRAKING SYSTEM STOPS MY CAR ON ITS OWN WHILE DRIVING (HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES), OIL CHANGES ARE DONE EVERY 3000 MILES, HEAD GASKET BLOWN DUE TO FLIMSY BOLTS OEM AND A 1.5 L ENGINE WITH TURBO.... BAD IDEA.... TURBO TOO STRONG FOR A 1.5L.... NOW IM OUT A 2500 BILL...

The most urgent issue with my vehicle is the automatic braking system. During several instances driving during the day and at night, my car has done what’s referred to as “phantom braking” where it detects something in the road, though the road is completely clear and open and the brakes engage and suddenly stop my car. It’s happened on occasions where it triggers the brakes lightly and it’s happened so intensely that my seat buckle has locked up throwing my head forward and my car comes to a near stop on the FREEWAY. It happens on regular roads as well, but the freeway is especially dangerous especially traveling at a higher rate of speed for the breaks to be engaged and rapidly slow my car down. I have been so fortunate that the times it has happened the people behind me had enough reaction time or there was no one behind me. This has happened on numerous occasions and for almost every incident it occurred I’ve had a witness (my parter at the time) they saw how jarring, intense and dangerous the braking was and how it happened out of nowhere. I brought this up to my dealership but they kept shooing me away saying that it’s not a problem and if I wanted to I could turn the automatic braking system off every single time I start my car (because that resets once your car is off and will be active the next time it’s in use) after an extreme incident on the freeway that almost got me into an accident (with a witness) I brought it to them again to which they told me my warranty was up and if I wanted to “check it out” for problems I would need to pay out of pocket and again recommended that I turn it off every time I start my vehicle. They said they wanted to see the problem themselves but it does not happen every drive. You have no idea when it is going to happen so it’s impossible to test with the intention of seeing for yourself. It’s completely random. I’ve also had electrical issues but the brake system is my priority.

On three separate occasions my automatic brakes designed to avoid a collision have engaged while I was driving highway speed with no vehicle or obstruction I'm front of my car.

While driving on a straight road at 35 mph the car suddenly and aggressively applied the brakes without driver input and without another car or obstacle in front of the car. Had there been a car behind me a rear collision would have been likely. The weather was sunny and there were deep shadows of trees cast on the road. This is the fourth time this has happened the past year. This is my first report to NHTSA.

There was a car behind me that could of hit me. Everything in my car flew off the seats and it jarred my neck and back. My lowered back has been hurting and I am seriously concerned for my safety in this vehcle.

The automatic braking system is repeatedly braking inappropriately, with nothing in front of us or in the road. We have not gotten into an accident yet but have come close twice. The Honda dealership in Elk Grove, CA acted like this was normal and it “could be a leaf or pebble” and there’s nothing they can fix because it’s normal. This is not normal. It’s dangerous.

I was driving at 10am today on a local road, about 35mph, with no car in front of me, nor behind me. I was the only car in the area. Suddenly both the automatic emergency braking (AEB) system and the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) were activated. I was concerned when it happened, not knowing if the car would come to a stop. I called my local Honda Dealer Service Department, asking if they could check it out. He said they could take it for a test drive to see if it would happen again. Since this was the only time it happened we agreed to wait to see if it happens again before bringing it in. Once home I searched the NHTSA database and discovered similar instances, and an open Investigation, EA24002. I wanted to be sure to add my incident to the others to help in finding a resolution.

I had 2 occasions in one day where my car did a phantom brake. It was unexpected and got me concerned and nervous. No orher car in front of me to cause this issue.

On 4 seperate occasions I have had my collision avoidance system activate suddenly, with no warning. Immediately initiating braking with NO danger, no car, nothing in front of me. Twice going thru an intersection, twice crossing a security barrier at work. My dash gives the brake warning and within 5 seconds immediately brakes for nothing in front of me. It almost caused an accident with the car behind me twice. It has not been troubleshot by the dealer or mechanic. The dealer hasn't been responsive to past concerns about other problems with the infotainment system/display so im not expecting them to take this seriously. It also doesnt duplicate easily.

No warning or message was evident prior to, during or immediately after the incidents.

I was driving down a wide and straight road with no other cars anywhere around me. Suddenly, the automatic emergency braking system became activated and the car brakes came on for absolutely no reason. This could have caused a major accident if there was any traffic near me and is a very dangerous flaw in my car.

On a two way street, no cars in front or oncoming, at about 30 mph, for no apparent reason, the car suddenly and immediately braked to a stop. Very scary, but no one hurt. Luckily, no cars following close behind.

The automatic emergency warning light came on 4 times when there was no reason it should have come on bc there was no chance of a collision. Emergency braking system came on when there was nothing in our path. Very alarming. We were traveling at a low rate of speed-- 25 miles per hour and suddenly the Emergency braking system engaged and jolted us (driver and passenger) forward...this is very dangerous and could cause severe injury or death if it occurred on a highway

3 times now, I am driving straight and flat about 35-40 MPH, dry conditions, and the AEB triggers with nobody around me at all.

Collision Mitigation Braking System malfunctioned on 4/23/24 causing automatic abrupt braking when driving over metal hole cover in road. The braking was so intense the car behind our family nearly collided with our car. In the moment this happened the car was not in driver’s control as a result of malfunction. Contacted local Honda dealer by phone who was familiar with the issue and advised there is no doubt the cause is the CMBS and there is no diagnostics or resolution for the problem.

Brakes went on causing the car to almost come to a complete stop. Car went around the back of car. I was going 40 miles an hour. No car or anything in the road. Nice sunny day. This is the fourth time the brakes have gone on with nothing in front of car.

My 2022 CRV EXL's Automatic emergency braking system engaged without warning for no reason; there were No obstructions on the road twice. Once on the 91 Eastbound freeway around 8:30pm going over 55mph when there were no obstructions for a fraction of a second while my wife and two young children were in the vehicle.

Periodic irregular intervention by the vehicle safety system applying braking force and/or steering input to no threat. Mainly happens at highway speeds, but sometimes occurs just above 40 mph.

On a number of occasions, my car will sound the emergency braking system beep, flash the BRAKE alert on the drivers message screen, and less frequently, apply the brakes independently when nothing is in front of my car. The warnings flash when the car thinks I am too close to a car turning out of my lane but several times this has happened when nothing is in front of me at all. On at least two occasions, full braking was applied when nothing was in front of the car.

The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the dust or dirt on the milliliter wave radar needed to be cleaned. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

I had a medium sized doe run in front of the vehicle while on the highway. I had the adaptive cruise control set to 62 MPH with lane keeping assist and all other safety features enabled. When the deer ran out out in front of the vehicle the emergency breaking did not engage, nor did it flash the warning or make the chime. It caused major damage to the front center and drivers side of the vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. However, after the collision, the airbag light on the dash illuminated and stayed on. The collision had enough impact to send the several hundred pound deer over 100' down the road. The only safety feature that partly worked was the retracting seat belts. I was driving my 2021 Honda CR-V vehicle at residential speed (exact speed unknown). Car suddenly stopped in street causing me to jerk forward in driver seat. As the car stopped, I saw the orange BRAKE symbol appear in front dash. I was accelerating at time of incident. I was not using the brakes. I was injured with severe whiplash. Pain so severe that I also made an error with administration of a pain reliever when I arrived home. This put me and my passenger at risk due to the failure of what I learned was the CMBS in my vehicle. If another car was following too closely behind me at the time the car abruptly stopped, this could have been a more serious accident. This incident happened today 11/22/2023 at approximately 11:30 am EST. I have not had an opportunity to contact the dealer as I have been in pain since it happened. Also, a few weeks ago, I noticed the BRAKE symbol appeared while driving while accelerating. The car jerked but it did not fully stop. Date of that incident unknown. The car has not yet been inspected by anyone since today’s incident. I found information about the CMBS issue for my car type after searching for a known recall online this evening.

I was in a dedicated lane to make a left turn. There was no vehicle in front of me and no pedestrians in the crosswalk. I was coasting to the light at about 20mph or less as I could see that it was red and because I am familiar with the intersection , I knew it would not turn green immediately. At 2 to 3 car lengths back from where I was going to stop all of a sudden the car jolted to a stop. The car immediately shut down (quit running). There was no car behind me or I am sure my car would have been rear ended. I got out of the car to see if there was something under it or if I could see if something had fallen off the underside of the car. I tried to restart the car but it would not start. By that time there were 2 cars behind me waiting to turn. I got out of the car and went back to the nearest car and told the driver she needed to go around my car. I got back into my car and tried to restart it and it started. I had absolutely no warning before this happened. I did not take the car for an inspection but I did call the salesman (as soon as I could). He said it might be because of the forward collision system and suggested that I could turn it off. He said that the system is very sensitive and even a leaf might set it off. Even though it was in October, it was not a windy day and most trees in my area had not started losing their leaves. I bought this car because of the safety equipment as I am [XXX] and in good health, but I am a practical person. I did tell the salesman that if there is another incident that I would be coming in for an inspection. I have been anxious about this and have learned others have had this problem. 2 issues: 1. Automatic Emergency Braking started braking randomly when there was no danger at all. 2. Got Lane Departure Warning a few times, when the vehicle actually stayed in the lane.

I was driving in slow-moving traffic (about 10 or 15 mph) as there were several police officers walking in the shoulder to the right of traffic. The brakes suddenly and strongly engaged for no reason. There was no steel plate in the road, no slowed or stopped vehicle or pedestrian in my path. As far as I know the brake warning light did not come on. The abrupt braking caused my neck and back to hurt, and I thought I had hit a child or a dog. As I looked behind me there was clearly nothing in my lane. I could have been rear-ended but was not.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the failure could not be duplicated; however, the failure recurred. The contact stated that the failure occurred despite turning off the CMBS. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who could not duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 28,457.

The car intermittently slams on the brakes, often at high speeds, and the brakes sticks, leaving me potentially unable to avoid a rear-end collision. This has happened twice with no obstacle in front of the vehicle in the last month and once within the last month where an obstacle was ahead but at a far enough distance the AES should not have been triggered, let alone stick. The front sensors (behind the rear view mirror and behind the Honda logo on the grill) have been inspected for damage by the dealership and user. They are in perceivably good working condition. This problem appears to be connected to a similar malfunction with LKAS, in which the system is turned off (according to the vehicle displays and verified by following owner manual instructions) and the car is driven on a surface with no lanes (I.e. a dirt road) and LKAS indicates there is a lane departure. There is no option to turn either system completely off, which leaves the driver with no recourse in the event these systems malfunction.

There have been approximately 10 times I was driving my CRV and was exiting the interstate onto the exit ramp with no cars in front of me and the automatic brakes came on attempting to stop my car for no reason. I took it to my local Honda dealership and told them what had happened and they said there was nothing they could do about it. This is a dangerous issue and could easily cause an accident.

I was driving on the highway, the traffic is at 70 mph plus and there was not a car in front of me and my car just brakes. I was nearly rear ended because of this. I have taken it in and reported it to the dealership service but they stated that they could not reproduce the issue. Also, the car squeaks anytime you make a turn and sometimes while driving. The infotainment also has blacked out and rebooted while I was driving . The TPSM light comes on and the air in the tire pressure has not changed.

I was driving at about 40-45 MPH on a clear road - nothing in front of me, nothing in back. Suddenly the car, on its own, deployed the breaks very hard. It happened without warning. If there had been a car in back of me there would have been no time for that car to stop. My head whipped forward and back. The airbag was not deployed. I was not injured but very shaken up. I want to repeat that there was nothing in front of me that the breaks would need to be deployed. This could have been a life-threatening disaster.

Brakes are applied at a slow and fast speed for no reason. Also the touch screen turns off or loses view while driving and car is sluggish when you excelerate the gas peddle.

The car started sounding an alarm and flashing an idiotic warning message that says "Adaptive Cruise Control Problem". Yes it said "problem." It also flashed a message that said "BRAKE SYSTEM." I called the dealer and they instructed me how to turn off Adaptive Cruise Control, and it did NOT stop the alarm and the flashing messages. They told me it was ok to drive and to bring it in to the dealer. I did that. Had to get ride so I could leave the car. The alarm stopped on the way to the dealer. The next day they told me they could not find what was wrong with the car, but it was ok to drive, and it if happened again, take a video. If they didn't know what was wrong with the car, HOW DID THEY KNOW IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE? I picked up the car and a couple days later it did the same thing. Even turning the car off and cranking it back up would not make it stop. I did stop and take videos of the flashing messages, which are attached here, and also sent them to the dealer. I took the car in and they said they got the videos, and they would now be able to fix it. The next day they said come pick it up, but said they THOUGHT it needed the front radar/camera replaced but they did not have one. They said it would be July before they could get the part. But they continued to say it is safe to drive. Since then, it had done this several more times, and I took videos again. Those are attached as well. They called today and said it would be August before they could get the parts. I strongly suspect that they do not actually know what it wrong, and that they have not done any actual microelectronic or software troubleshooting, and they are just guessing that this part will fix it. There were no cars in front of mine when the ABS system suddenly braked very hard. The car behind me had to slam on brakes to avoid rear ending me. This car is 3 weeks old and this is very scary.

-the car is rolling right and left even during the lane keeping assistance is on. -the driver seat started to deteriorate. -the air-condition compressor start to be noisy, no enough cooling even though it was winter season. - during the moderate bad weather all driver assist system cannot operate, while my last vehicle was better ( Hyundai elantra). - remote start engine does not work properly, while other cars is working ( same model, and same distance and direction)

I have a 2022 Honda CRV EX, the emergency braking system activates at random times and could cause a wreck.
