I drive a 2004 Honda Element and on Friday 2/3/23 I was in a car accident where I t-boned a car going 25 mph and my airbags did NOT deploy.

The contact owns a 2004 Honda Element. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer to repair under the Takata recall. Several few months after the air bag repair, the driver’s side curtain air bag deployed without incident and without warning while driving at 65 MPH. The contact pulled off the highway and found no visible damage or reason for the deployment. The contact had taken the vehicle back to the dealer on two separate occasions for an inspection; however, the contact was never given a cause for the failure. The contact then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who refused to service the vehicle since the cause of the deployment had not been determined. The manufacturer had been notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

PASSENGER SEAT AIRBAG DEPLOYED WHILE DRIVING LESS THAN 5 MPH AND NOT INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT. NO DAMAGE TO VEHICLE, EXCEPT TORN SEAMS IN SEAT FROM AIRBAG. THIS HAPPENED WHILE TRAVELING ON GRAVEL ROAD TO LAKE HOUSE, RIGHT FRONT TIRE HIT POT-HOLE, CAUSING THE BAG DEPLOYMENT. INAPPROPRIATE SENSITIVITY IN AIRBAG SENSOR OR FAULTY AIRBAG SEEMS TO BE THE CAUSE. HUGHES HONDA IN ATHENS, GA. STATES THEY WILL NOT REPAIR SINCE THIS IS NOT A RECALL ISSUE.

MY 2004 ELEMENT LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING ONE DAY. I HAD IT SERVICED BY A MECHANIC WITH SET BELT REPLACEMENT. DID NOT HELP WITH THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON. HAD IT LOOKED AT BY SOMEONE ELSE WHO TOLD ME IT WAS THE AIRBAG SENSORS. I REALLY DON"T WANT TO KEEP SPENDING MONEY BUT IT FAILED INSPECTION BECAUSE OF THIS ALONG WITH MY DRIVER SIDE SEAT THAT IS ROCKING. DRIVING AND COMING TO A STOP WITH ANY TYPE OF FORCE CAUSES THE SEAT TO JUMP FORWARD. EVEN IF I AM SITTING AND IF I MOVE AROUND MY SEAT WILL MOVE. WHILE DRIVING ON A TWO LANE HIGHWAY, AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE DRIVER SIDE,SIDE AIRBAG (THE DRIVER SEAT) DEPLOYED FOR NO REASON. I SHIVER WHEN I THINK OF HOW BADLY THIS MIGHT HAVE GONE IF OPPOSING TRAFFIC WAS THERE AT THE TIME! A DAY LATER MY LEFT ARM STILL HURTS FROM DEPLOYMENT. ON JUNE 15, 2015 I RECEIVED A MESSAGE FROM HOEHN HONDA ADVISING THE PART WAS AVAILABLE AND TO CALL AND SCHEDULE AN APPT. I RETURNED THE CALL ON THE SAME DAY AND REQUESTED AN APPT FOR JUNE 22, 2015. ON JUNE 16, 2015 I CALLED HOEHN AGAIN REQUESTED AN APPT. I SPOKE WITH ANNA WHO ADVISED THE EARLIEST APPT WOULD BE JUNE 29, 2015. I WAS.INFORMED THE REPAIR WOULD TAKE TWO HOURS. I HAVE CALLED THEM AFTER 30 DAYS AND AFTER 60 DAYS. THEN AFTER 60 DAYS I GET THE SECOND RECALL LETTER FOR THE DRIVER AIRBAG. I UNDERSTAND THIS IS A HUGE RECALL, BUT HONDA KNEW ABOUT THIS LONG BEFORE WE CUSTOMERS WERE NOTIFIED AND WE SHOULD NOT BE WARNED NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE IT COULD KILL US, WHEN THEY ARE DOING NOTHING ABOUT IT....AT LEAST IN MY CASE. I AM WONDERING IF MY DEALER IS PLAYING FAVORITES. WE DO NOT GO FOR REGULAR SERVICE, OIL CHANGES, ETC. AFTER ALL IT IS A 2004 CAR AND A WALMART OIL CHANGE IS GOOD ENOUGH. I HAD FILED A COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS ISSUE IN 2010. THE SRV LIGHT HAS BEEN ON SINCE 2010. I DID HAVE THE DRIVER SEAT LATCH REPLACED, THE DEALER CLEARED TO CODE AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT WENT OFF FOR TWO DAYS AND THEN RETURNED. THAT IS WHEN I NOTIFIED HONDA AND YOU. I WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $450.00 TO HAVE THE HARNESS REPLACED. NEEDLESS TO SAY I NO LONGER DO BUSINESS WITH THE DEALER AND I AM NOT SURE IF I WILL EVEN BUY ANOTHER HONDA JUST DUE TO THEIR LACK OF MY INTEREST. IT APPEARS THERE HAS BEEN OTHER COMPLAINTS AND OTHER HONDA VEHICLES RECALLED FOR SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I STILL OWN MY HONDA ELEMENT. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE ABOUT THIS YET. I ONLY NOTICED THE BAG HANGING FROM THE SIDE OF THE SEAT WHEN I WENT TO ENTER THE VEHICLE AGAIN. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT HAD HAPPENED UNTIL I SAW THAT BAG. MY LEFT UPPER ARM FELT AS IF I HAD BEEN PUNCHED HARD. NETHER MY INSURANCE COMPANY(SAFETY) NOR AMERICAN HONDA WILL COVER THE DAMAGE WHICH WAS ESTIMATED AT A BIT OVER $1500. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO MY HONDA DEALER. THEY COULD FIND NO "CODES" OR OTHER REASON FOR THE BAG DEPLOY. UNPROMPTED AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT ON MY 2004 HONDA ELEMENT. SLAMMED CAR DOOR SHUT WHEN IT WAS PARKED AND OFF. HEARD LOUD POP SOUND. DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR, THE SRS LIGHT WAS ON. OPENED FRONT/REAR DOOR AND SAW THAT THE STITCHING ON THE DRIVER'S SEAT WAS ALL TORN AND THE AIRBAG WAS SEMI-EXPOSED. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY SAID IT WAS MY FAULT. I HAD DONE SOMETHING TO CAUSE THE SRS SENSOR TO BE DEFECTIVE. THEY TOLD ME TO CLAIM IT VIA INSURANCE. I HAVE SINCE INVESTIGATED AND FOUND MANY MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE-- AND HAVING BEEN TOLD THE SAME EXCUSE. SEEMS TO ME THAT HONDA IS TRYING TO COVER SOMETHING UP. ON FEBRUARY 2, 2008, MY HUSBAND AND I WERE DRIVING FROM MILWAUKEE WI TO MADISON WI WHICH IS ABOUT 80 MILES. THERE WAS NO SNOW ON THE ROAD THAT MORNING, ROADS WERE CLEAR. ALL OF A SUDDEN WE HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE A GUN SHOT GO OFF. WE HAD NO IDEA WHAT IT WAS AND MOVED OUT OF TRAFFIC TO THE SHOULDER TO PULL OVER. WE THEN NOTICED THAT THE SIDE AIRBAG THAT IS LOCATED IN THE DRIVERS SEAT DEPLOYED. NOTHING HIT US, WE HIT NOTHING. CALLED SCHLOSSMANS HONDA CITY THAT MONDAY THEY SAID THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO BRING THE CAR . THE FIRST THING THEY SAID WAS THAT I MUST HAVE HIT SOMETHING. THEN MADE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT FOR THEM TO LOOK AT IT AND RUN SOME TESTS ON IT. AGAIN NOTHING. THE SENSOR TRIGGERED THE AIRBAG BUT THERE IS NO DAMAGE ANYWHERE ON MY CAR. THIS REPAIR IS GOING TO COST OVER $1200 HONDA REFUSES TO COVER THIS. I HAVE ABOUT 30,000 MILES ON MY 2004 ELEMENT, MY WARRANTY IS EXPIRED. I CONTACTED PRIVATE AUTO INSURANCE, I HAVE A $500 DEDUCTIBLE . I HAVE CONTACTED HONDA CORPORATION IN CALIFORNIA AND STARTED A CLAIM BECAUSE I FEEL NOT ONLY SHOULD THEY COVER THIS REPAIR BUT SHOULD CHECK OUT THE OTHER SENSORS AND AIRBAGS IN MY CAR. WHAT IF I GET THIS ONE FIXED AND IT HAPPENS AGAIN? WE COULD HAVE GOTTEN INTO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT OR WORSE. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ON THE INTERNET, SEEMS THERE ARE SEVERAL PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH HONDA'S AIRBAGS. THEY EITHER DEPLOY WHEN THEY AREN'T SUPPOSE TO OR DON'T DEPLOY IN SERIOUS ACCIDENTS. I BELIEVE THIS IS HONDA'S RESPONSIBILITY TO CHECK ALL AIRBAGS IN CERTAIN MODELS. CURRENTLY MY CAR IS NOT FIXED, I AM STILL WORKING WITH HONDA CITY PETE LOBERG, MGR. WHO IS DOING ALL HE CAN TO ASSIST ME. I TRULY BELIEVE THIS IS SOMETHING THAT REQUIRES YOUR ASSISTANCE TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF PEOPLE IN THEIR CARS WITH THESE AIRBAGS. *TR
