The contact stated that while refueling the vehicle, he stepped away from the vehicle then returned and noticed that fuel had splattered out of the fuel tank filler neck. The contact then stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated however, after driving a half mile, the check engine warning light turned off. The contact was concerned that the vehicle was designed to drain the extra fuel but failed to operate as designed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that fuel had entered the canister and the charcoal filter and the canister needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 17,081.
