THE VEHICLE WAS PLACED IN NEUTRAL AND COASTED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO RESTART. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 220,000.

RECENTLY, WHILE TRAVELING ON INTERSTATE 94, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON IN MY VEHICLE ALONG WITH A LIGHT THAT READS "TCS". SHORTLY AFTER THESE TWO LIGHTS CAME ON, MY VEHICLE BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS ACCELERATING. WHEN I DRIVE MY VEHICLE, I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE VAN TAKING OFF AND MAINTAINING STABILITY ONCE IN MOTION. DURING TRAVEL ON HIGHWAYS, FREEWAYS, INTERSTATES, OR CITY STREETS, MY VEHICLE VIOLENTLY SHIFTS FROM FIRST GEAR TO SECOND GEAR WHEN I PRESS ON THE ACCELERATOR, CAUSING IT TO SLOW DOWN UNEXPECTEDLY BEFORE JERKING INTO MOTION IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. ALSO, DURING RECENT NIGHT TIME TRAVEL THE HEADLIGHTS BEGAN TO FLICKER, GO DIM THEN GET BRIGHT AGAIN. THE VEHICLE ALSO SLOWS DOWN WHEN TURNING CORNERS THEN WILL SUDDENLY JUMP INTO MOTION. ALSO, THE DRIVER SIDE PASSENGER DOOR RECENTLY WENT OFF TRACK CAUSING A SCREAMING ALARM TO SOUND DURING TRAVEL. I HAVE RECENTLY HAD TO HAVE THE HIGH PRESSURE POWER STEERING LINE REPLACED BECAUSE IT HAD A HOLE IN THE UPPER HOSE.I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED THAT THE POOR ACCELERATION OF MY VEHICLE AND THE VIOLENT JERKING FROM FIRST TO SECOND GEAR WILL CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. OUR 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY HAS HAD THE P0740 TORQUE CLUTCH CONVERTER SOLENOID CIRCUIT (OPEN) CODE DISPLAYED NUMEROUS TIMES, WE THOUGHT SINCE IT WAS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND THE TRANSMISSION HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED WITHIN 20,000 MILES THAT WE SHOULD ACTUALLY TAKE IT TO THE DEALER IN MARYSVILLE, WA AND HAVE THEM DO A TRANSMISSION FLUSH THEN A SUPERVISOR AND SAID NO YOU SHOULD HAVE US RUN A DIAGNOSTIC BY ONE OF OUR MASTER TECHS. AFTER REITERATING THIS SERIOUSNESS OF OUR TRANSMISSION ISSUE THE CODE COMING ON AND DELAYS IN SHIFTING MOSTLY JUST BARELY NOTICEABLE, THEY ASSURED US IF WE PAID $129 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC THAT A MASTER TECH COULD GET TO THE ISSUE, HOWEVER THEY LATER TOLD US AFTER WE GOT THE CAR BACK AND CALLED ON THE ISSUE THAT AN APPRENTICE (NOT A MASTER TECH) HAD DONE THE ENTIRE INSPECTION AND CAME UP WITH NO PROBLEMS EXCEPT A DIFFERENT CODE HAVING TO DO WITH UP BAD CATALYTIC CONVERTER WHICH HAD NEVER BEEN AN ISSUE BEFORE AND TOLD US WE MAY NEED TO GET THAT REPLACED SOON. THE TRANSMISSION CODE P0740 CAME UP ON OUR WAY HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP. I TOLD THEM OF THE CODE AND THE RESEARCH I HAVE DONE AND ASKED WHAT ELSE TO DO AND THEY TOLD ME THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE THAT IS A TRANSMISSION DEATH CODE AND WE WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION, TO WHICH I ASKED EVEN THOUGH IT WAS JUST REPLACED 20,000 MILES AGO AND HE SAID MAYBE YOU GOT A BAD TRANSMISSION. I WAS DRIVING ON A CROWDED EXPRESSWAY WHEN MY CAR SEIZED UP COMPLETELY DUE TO A TRANSMISSION FAILURE WHICH PUT ME IN AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE LANE WITH THREE LARGE SEMI TRAILER TRUCKS IN FRONT OF ME, IN BACK OF ME, AND TO THE RIGHT OF ME ON A 3 LANE HIGHWAY. THE TRUCK BEHIND ME HAD ENOUGH ROOM TO BARELY SLOW DOWN BUT IT ALMOST CRASHED INTO ME. I TURNED ON MY EMERGENCY FLASHER LIGHTS AND WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR ONTO THE SHOULDER OF A SLIGHTLY UPHILL EXIT RAMP, NARROWLY ESCAPING SERIOUS INJURY. I WAS THEN ABLE TO VERY SLOWLY MOVE THE CAR IN FIRST GEAR WITH THE FLASHERS GOING, AND FORTUNATELY WAS CLOSE TO A SIDE STREET WHERE I PARKED THE CAR AND HAD IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP. ALTHOUGH HONDA REPLACED MY TRANSMISSION FOR FREE UNDER THE AUSPICES OF A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT BACK IN 2007, THE CAR HAS LOW MILEAGE FOR THE LIFE OF THE TRANSMISSION. HOWEVER, THEY ARE REFUSING TO COVER THE REPLACEMENT COST OF THE TRANSMISSION. THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE WAS SUDDEN AND LITERALLY SEIZED UP THE CAR AND PUT MY LIFE IN DANGER. THIS DOESN'T SEEM TO MATTER TO HONDA. SUSPECT TRANSMISSION DEFECT. SET EMERGENCY LIGHTS ON AND ROLL OVER TO THE CURB. PARKED AND HITCH A RIDE HOME. WHEN IT ONLY HAD ABOUT 30000 MILES, IT HAD A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM AND ITS REPLACEMENT WAS COVERED UNDER MANUFACTURE WARRANTY AT THAT TIME. WE SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM IS A VERY COMMON FOR HONDA VEHICLES. WE CONTACTED AMERICA HONDA AND THEY TOLD US IT HAS ALREADY PASSED THE WARRANTY PERIOD AND THEY WOULD NOT HELP WITH THE TRANSMISSION REPAIR. WE PAID FULL STICKER PRICE FOR THIS VAN 14 YEARS AGO AND WISH IT CAN LAST UP TO 200000 MILES. NOW WE ARE RELUCTANT TO PAY FOR THE HIGH REPAIR COST OR WE COULD NOT SELL IT AT A SATISFACTORY PRICE. MY ODYSSEY FIRST HAD A TRANSMISSION ISSUE BACK IN AUGUST, 2003, ONLY 4 YEARS AND 42,000 MILES AND THE DEALER COMPLETED THE REPAIR WITHOUT ANY COST SINCE IT IS STILL WITHIN THE MANUFACTORY WARRANTY. THE SECOND TIME THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AGAIN IN 2008 AT 96,000 MILES. I WROTE A LETTER TO AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR AND THEY AGREED TO COVER IT WITH NO COST. HOWEVER, THIS ISSUE RESURFACED AGAIN. THE VERY SAME SYMPTOMS HAVE REOCCURRED AND MY CAR BROKE DOWN ON THE FREEWAY AT 126,000 MILES LAST WEEK. HAD A MECHANIC CHECKED IT AND IT IS THE TRANSMISSION ISSUE. THIS VAN IS MY WEEKEND CAR AND I HARDLY DRIVE IT SO I HAVE ONLY ADDED 30,000 MILES AFTER THE LAST TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT IN 2008. THIS PROVES TO ME THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE DESIGN OF THE TRANSMISSION AND THE ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION CAN ONLY SUSTAIN ROUGHLY 40,000 MILES BEFORE BREAKING DOWN.

FORTUNATELY, DRIVER WAS NEAR SIDE OF ROAD AND RECOGNIZED A PROBLEM PRIOR TO THE COMPLETE LOCK-UP, OTHERWISE THE VAN WOULD HAVE SKIDDED TO A STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. ACCORDING TO THE HONDA SERVICE PERSON, HONDA WON'T PAY ANY REPAIR OR REPLACE COST BECAUSE IT'S OUT OF MY EXTENDED WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE NUMEROUS SIMILAR COMPLAINTS REPORTED ON 1999 - 2002 ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS INCLUDING A RECALL AND CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IN CALIFORNIA AGAINST HONDA FOR 1999-2001 ACCORD TRANSMISSIONS THAT SHOWED THE SAME MALFUNCTION CODE. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON BUT I HAVE BEEN HAUNTED BY THIS LIGHT FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS. USUALLY SOMETHING MINOR. ONE TIME I HAD MY CAT CONVERTER REPLACED. MY SON AND THREE OF HIS YOUNG FRIENDS TOOK THE VAN TO THE SNOW. I INSISTED HE TAKE THE VAN OVER HIS CAR BECAUSE IT WAS "SAFER". THERE WAS HEAVY HOLIDAY TRAFFIC. ON AN INCLINE, HE WENT TO PUSH THE PEDAL DOWN AND THE CAR WOULD NOT GO FORWARD. IT STARTED DRIFTING BACKWARDS! VERY DANGEROUS IN MAJOR TRAFFIC. HE DRIFTED ONTO THE SHOULDER, PUT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON CALLED AAA. THESE KIDS WERE STRANDED IN THE SNOW UNTIL THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED. IT JUST STOPPED! INCREDIBLE! I REPLACED THE TRANNY ONCE BEFORE WHILE THE CAR WAS UNDER ITS ORIGINAL EXTENDED WARRANTY. REPLACED THE TRANNY AT 90,200 MILES. NOW AT 147,000 MILES, I NEED ANOTHER TRANSMISSION. IN AUGUST 2003 I RECEIVED A WARRANTY EXTENSION FROM HONDA CONCERNING THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. AT THE TIME I HAD 70K MILES AND SPORADIC INSTANCES OF TRANSMISSION SLIPPAGE. ABOUT A 4 MONTHS LATER IT GOT REALLY BAD AND WE HAD TO GET OUR TRANSMISSION REBUILT, THE IGNITION SWITCH PROBLEM STARTED ALSO (THE CAR ENGINE WOULD STALL RANDOMLY AND IT WE WOULD HAVE TO STOP THE CAR ON THE SHOULDER OF THE FREEWAY AND RESTART THE CAR GOING AT 60 MPH+), NOW WE SPENT 2500 BUCKS TO GET EVERYTHING FIXED. BUT NOW OUR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS BAD. THE IN DASH LIGHTS DON'T WORK AND THE BACK LIGHTS DON'T WORK. THE DOORS JUST DIED FOR SOME REASON. THIS IS IN CONCERN TO A 1999 HONDA ODSSYEY MINIVAN. HONDA HAS VOLUNTARILY ISSUED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR A TRANSMISSION DEFECT PROBLEM FOR 7YRS/100K MILES. I TOOK MY MINIVAN IN AROUND 95K TO HAVE THEM CHECK ON IT AS I ALREADY NOTICED SOME MINOR SYMPTOMS AS DESCRIBED IN THE WARRANTY EXTENSION. THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AT THAT TIME AND DECLINED TO FIXED ANY TRANSMISSION PARTS. MY TRANSMISSION CONTINUED TO DEGRADE VERY SLOWLY OVER THE NEXT 20K MILES AND THE DEALER NOW TOLD ME THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE RETURNED AN INTERNAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 120K. I BELIEVED THAT THE TRANSMISSION BUILT AT THAT TIME NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AS THE DEALER NOW SAID IT HAS DETERIOATED TO SUCH A STATE THAT IT MAY BECOME INOPERABLE WHILE DRIVING. *NM

BEGINNING IN 2000, WHEN THE CAR WAS LESS THAN ONE YEAR OLD, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED MAJOR EQUIPMENT FAILURES. FIRST, THE EGR VALVE MALFUNCTIONED; IT WAS EVENTUALLY REPAIRED AT HONDA'S EXPENSE. NEXT, ONE OF THE MOTORS FOR THE SIDE POWER DOORS FAILED. THAT COST APPROXIMATELY $800 TO REPAIR. THEN, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED, AND HONDA EVENTUALLY COVERED THE FULL COSTS UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. FOR AT LEAST FOUR YEARS, WE WERE PLAGUED WITH AN ERRATIC "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT, AND SOMETIMES THE COMPUTER CODE WAS INADEQUATE TO DIRECT A REPAIR. IN 2003 THE RADIATOR ROTTED OUT, AND THE REPLACEMENT/REPAIR COST US $800. IN 2004 THE CATALYTIC CONVERTOR FAILED, AND THAT REPLACEMENT/REPAIR COST US $1400. ON JULY 22, 2005, THE REAR A/C VENTS FAILED TO COOL, AND I CALLED FOR AN APPOINTMENT AT OUR LOCAL DEALER TO HAVE THAT CHECKED AND REPAIRED. THE REPAIR WAS SCHEDULED FOR JULY 25, 2005. WHEN I WAS DRIVING THE CAR ON JULY 23 WITH THE A/C TURNED ON (THE FRONT VENTS CONTINUED TO COOL), THE ENGINE DIED WHILE I WAS DRIVING AT A SPEED OF 45 MPH ON A LOCAL HIGHWAY. I MANAGED TO PULL OFF INTO A NEARBY PARKING LOT, AND I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AFTER TURNING OFF THE A/C. IT IS NOW AT THE DEALER'S SHOP, AND THE LABOR COSTS ALONE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE A/C FAILURE WILL COST MORE THAN $350. AFTER INSPECTING THE SYSTEM FOR MORE THAN THREE HOURS JULY 25, THE DEALER'S MECHANIC STILL COULD NOT LOCATE THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I HATE THIS CAR! I HAVE HAD MANY MORE PROBLEMS THAN I EVER EXPECTED, AND THE RESPONSES FROM AMERICAN HONDA AND FROM THE LOCAL DEALER HAVE BEEN DISAPPOINTING. NEITHER ESTABLISHMENT KNOWS HOW TO RELATE SUCCESSFULLY TO CUSTOMERS. THIS CAR HAS BEEN A REAL LEMON, AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH MY DECISION ABOUT WHAT TO BUY TO REPLACE IT. ALTHOUGH HONDA HAS A GOOD REPUTATION, I HAVE NOT FOUND THIS CAR TO BE RELIABLE. IN FACT, IT IS A MAJOR SOURCE OF STRESS IN MY LIFE, CAUSING ME TO GNASH MY TEETH WHEN I AM DRIVING IT, FOR I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN IT AT ALL.

I PURCHASED A 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY IN AUG 1999. FIRST ACCOUNT WAS IN MAR 2000. BY NOV 2000, VEHICLE WAS SEEN 3 TIMES FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. FIVE YEARS LATER, THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED 12 TIMES (WORKING ON NUMBER 13 NOW) FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. EGR KIT HAS BEEN REPLACED 5 TIMES, REMAINING VISITS ACCOUNTED FOR MY CLEANING EGR PORTS, REPLACING THE EGR VALVE, AND REPLACING THE GAS CAP. I'VE HAD OTHER VEHICLES FOR 7+ YEARS AND NEVER REPLACED A GAS CAP! THIS VEHICLE HAS GONE THROUGH 2? CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS TIED TO THE EMISSIONS SYSTEM. AS A RESULT, VEHICLE IS NOW HAVING PROBLEMS PASSING INSPECTION. DURING THE LAST VISIT, LOCAL DEALER REPLACED THE EGR KIT IN ORDER TO GET THE 05 INSPECTION COMPLETED. TWO WEEKS LATER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AGAIN. IN ADDITION, INTERNAL DAMAGE WAS FOUND IN THE TRANSMISSION IN AUG 03. DEALER AGREED TO TAKE CARE OF THIS PROBLEM IN GOOD FAITH. THIS WAS PRIOR TO THE OFFICIAL RECALL NOTICE. AT THE TIME OF SERVICE THE MILEAGE WAS CLOCKED AT 81823. LESS THAN 1 YEAR LATER (JUNE 2004), IT WAS DISCOVERED BY AN INDEPENDENT GARAGE THAT THE LEFT AXLE SEAL GOING INTO THE TRANSMISSION WAS CRACKED AND THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS EXTREMELY GRITTY. WHEN BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALER, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY ON THE NEW TRANSMISSION AND I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ANY SERVICE REQUIRED (MILEAGE WAS CLOCKED AT 102000). AS A SINGLE MOTHER OF 3 YOUNG CHILDREN, MY MAIN OBJECTIVE IS TO BE ABLE TO TRANSPORT THEM IN A SAFE, RELIABLE MANNER. GIVEN THE EXTENT OF MY EMISSION AND TRANSMISSION ISSUES THAT REMAIN UNRESOLVED, I CANNOT DEPEND ON THIS VEHICLE. THIS SITUATION WAS FIRST DOCUMENTED TO HONDA IN NOV 2000. SO, WHEN THEY REPLACED MY CATALYTIC CONVERTER FOUR MONTHS AGO (AND DIDN'T DO THE 5 HOUR TEST), WERE THEY COMPLETELY SURE IT WAS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER? UPSET ABOUT THIS NEW DISCOVERY, I TOLD THEM I JUST SPENT OVER $800 FOUR MONTHS AGO ON SOMETHING THAT THEY "THOUGHT" WAS WRONG AND NOW THEY ARE GOING TO CHARGE ME TO LOOK AT THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN. AT 54,700 MILES (JULY 2001) THE CAR MADE A CLUNKING NOISE WHEN PUT INTO GEAR. TCS LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. SERVICE COULDNOT REPRODUCE CLUNKING PROBLEM. TCS LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AT 100,000 (DEC 2002). I QUESTIONED THEM AGAIN ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION BUT WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A CATALYTIC CONVERTER/ ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM.( OUT OF STOCK UNTIL FEBRUARY). TCS AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS AGAIN IN JUNE 2003 AT 117,900. CODE SHOWED A TRANSMISSION PO740.TRANSMISSION "SMELLED BURNED." SEPT. 2003 TCS AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT INDICATE TRAINSMISSION NEEDS REPLACING. THE DEALER NOR MANUFACTURER HAD TOLD ME THAT THE WARRENTY HAD BEEN EXTENDED TO 100,000. THIS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM IN THE ODYSSEY, AND OTHER HONDAS, IS SO WIDE SPREAD THAT I CAN'T BELIEVE NOTHING IS BEING DONE FOR THE CONSUMER. MY COUSIN IN MISSOURI OWNS A 1999 ODYSSEY AND SHE HAS HAD TO REPLACE BOTH THE TRAINSMISSION AND CATALYTIC CONVERTOR AS WELL. A PRETTY BIG COINCIDENCE. I COULD NAME OTHER PARTS WE HAVE BOTH REPLACED. COULD IT BE THAT SOME PARTS OF THE ODYSSEY ARE LEMONS? CALLING HONDA COPOROATE IS A JOKE. THEY PUT YOU ON HOLD, HAVE A GOOD LAUGH AND THEN TELL YOU THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING BECAUSE THE CAR IS OVER THE MILEAGE LIMIT. THEY SHOULD BE MADE TO DO THE RIGHT THING. CONSUMER CONTACTED BOTH CANADA HONDA AND AMERICAN HONDA. AMERICAN HONDA STATED THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS BUILT IN CANADA, IT FELL INTO THE GRAY AREA. CANADA HONDA STATED THEY HAVE A 5YR/100,00 MILE WARRANTY ON THEIR VEHICLES. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS TAGGED IN ANOTHER COUNTRY, THE U.S., PARTICULARLY HAWAII THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. AS I AM NOW READING ABOUT HONDA EXTENDING THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY ON THE HONDA 2001-2 MODELS FOR THE ODESSEY, ACCORD AND PRELUDE DUE TO TRANSMISSION FAILURES, I WOULD LIKE TO FILE A COMPLAINT FOR THE HONDA ODYSSEY 1999 MODEL AS WELL. WE WERE IN THE FIRST DAY OF A 10 DAY TRIP IN OUR 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND THE TCS LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN SLIPPING. (THE VAN HAD BEEN IN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A SIMILAR ISSUE WITH THE TCS LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IN MAY, 2003 AND HAD ALSO BEEN CHECKED OUT PRIOR TO THE TRIP TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WAS IN GOOD SHAPE). THREE HOURS INTO OUR TRIP, THE LIGHTS COME ON AND WE'RE DEALING WITH AN OUT OF TOWN HONDA DEALER. WE WERE UNABLE TO GET A NEW TRANSMISSION DONE IN A TIMELY MANNERAT THE OUT OF TOWN DEALERSHIP AND WE NEEDED A VAN DUE TO A DISABLED CHILD AND NO VANS WERE AVAILABLE FOR RENT. THEREFORE, WE WERE LEFT WITH THE ONLY CHOICE WE FELT WE HAD WHICH WAS TO PURCHASE A NEW HONDA ODYSSEY (03) AT THE DEALERSHIP. AFTER WE GET HOME AND RESEARCH THIS ISSUE, WE FEEL THAT HONDA HAS BEEN LESS THAN FAIR AND HONEST. WE CALLED THE 800 NUMBER FOR HONDA CUSTOMER CARE. WHAT A JOKE! THEY FELT THAT THEY OWED US NOTHING, SINCE WE NO LONGER OWNED THE 99 HONDA. THEY ARE NOT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGING THAT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE 99 ODYSSEY IN TERMS OF TRANSMISSION. THEIR VERY WORDS WERE "WE CAN'T TALK ABOUT THIS...THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH THE 99 ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION...IT IS ONLY YOUR OPINION." 1999 HONDA ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION FAILURE. OURS HAS HAD ALL RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE, INCLUDING REQUIRED SERVICING AT 90K MILES (INCLUDING NEW TIMING BELT AND NEW TRANSMISSION FLUID). WE ALSO HAD PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY (EXTENDS WARRANTY OUT TO 100K MILES). NOW, AT 114K MILES, OUR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AND THE TRANSMISSION WILL SLIP OR CLUNK INTO GEAR GOING FROM A SLOW SPEED AND ACCELERATING GENTLY (ENGINE WOULD REV, THEN THE TRANSMISSION WOULD TAKE HOLD, GO CLUNK!, AND VAN WOULD BE IN GEAR). OUR HONDA DEALER'S SERVICE SAYS THAT IT'S A COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FAILURE AND WE NEED TO PAY $5,050 FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION. THE DEALER SAYS THE PROBLEM IS OUT OF THEIR HANDS. DEALER (NOT THE SAME AS WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED) THIS IS MOREHEAD HONDA IN NEWBURGH NY SAID IT NEEDED TRANSMISSION SERVICING AND NEW PARTS, CHARGED US $250. NOW THEY TELL US IT NEEDS NEW TRANSMISSION AND THEY WILL COVER ALL BUT $800. WE HAVE SPENT ENOUGH ALREADY ON REPAIRING THIS POORLY BUILT VEHICLE. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT IS HAPPENING TO MANY OF THESE VEHICLES AND IT IS TIME THAT THE MANUFACTURER BE SUBJECTED TO A RECALL. *AK

THOUGH WE BOUGHT THE ODYSSEY USED, IT ONLY HAD 10K MILES ON IT BY AN ELDERLY COUPLE. NO TOWING, NO STEEP HILLS, NO ABUSIVE DRIVING. TRANSMISSION STARTED SHIFTING AT WRONG TIMES, THEN WE HEARD LOUD 'CLUNK' WHEN PUTTING IT IN REVERSE. BROUGHT IT TO DEALER AND WAS TOLD WE NEEDED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION WITH A USED ONE FOR $3075 (90 DAY WARRANTY) OR NEW ONE FOR $4700 (50K/50 MTH WARRANTY). WE TRANSFERRED CAR TO TRANSMISSION SHOP WHO IS REBUILDING IT FOR $2100. NO MENTION AT DEALER OF ANY KNOWN PROBLEMS WITH ODYSSEY TRANSMISSIONS, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE THERE IS A CONSISTENT DEFECT. HAVE HEARD MANY STORIES OF PEOPLE GETTING POST-WARRANTY REPLACEMENTS FROM THEIR DEALER, AFTER PRESSURING THEM TO FIX THE PROBLEM.*AK

THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ALLOWS THE MINIVAN TO SLIP BACKWARD ON A HILL WHEN THE FOOT IS TAKEN OFF THE ACCELERATOR OR BRAKE. SINCE I HAD NEVER DRIVEN THIS MINIVAN BEFORE, I ALMOST SLID BACKWARD INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. AS THIS TRANSMISSION IS UNLIKE THAT ON OTHER CARS I HAVE DRIVEN, A WARNING SHOULD BE PLACED PROMINENTLY IN THE MANUAL, AND THE DEALER SHOULD INSTRUCT NEW HONDA OWNERS ABOUT THIS RISK.

I TEST DROVE THIS VAN AND DID NOT PURCHASE THE VEHICLE. WHEN THE CAR WAS STOPPED ON AN INCLINE OF ABOUT 35 DEGREES WHILE IN THE DRIVE POSITION THE CAR ROLLED BACKWARDS BETWEEN THE TIME I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND PUT IT ON THE GAS TO RESUME DRIVING. I FELT AS IF THE CAR WAS IN NEUTRAL RATHER THAN IN DRIVE. NOBODY WAS BEHIND ME SO I LET IT KEEP ROLLING BACKWARDS EXPECTING THAT IT WOULD STOP ITSELF AFTER 2 - 4 SECONDS BUT IT JUST KEPT GOING. ALTHOUGH THERE SHOULD BE FEW, IF ANY, OCCASIONS WHEN ONE DOES NOT HAVE THEIR FOOT ON EITHER THE BRAKE OR THE GAS WHEN STOPPED ON AN INCLINE, I WAS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE KNOWING THAT THE CAR COULD ROLL BACK SO MUCH WHILE IN DRIVE. *AK

THE SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER FAILED DURING THE TRIP ON HIGHWAY, I BROUGHT THE VAN TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY DON'T HAVE THE PARTS AND DON'T KNOW WHEN THE PARTS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE. DRIVING WITHOUT SPEEDOMETER COULD BE DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY IN WINTER CONDITIONS.
