I bought the 2005 Odyssey van in 12/2015. It now has 192,426 miles on it. Three or four times every year since I bought it, the engine will suddenly surge when coming to a stop sign or light, with my right foot on the brake pedal, braking and slowing the van for the stop sign or light. The engine revs to about 5000 or 6000 RPMs. It is as if the engine is flooring the gas pedal. Every time, I have been able to push the brake pedal down hard, even though the car continues to slowly roll forward, and shove it into neutral. I have to then tap the gas pedal to stop the engine accelerating. It then goes back to idling normally. Note, it even happened to me one time when I put it into reverse while parking! So very scary each and every time it happens. On [XXX], I took the van to Don Jacobs Honda Dealership, Lexington, KY. They said there were no reports of this ever happening to anyone else. They charged me $3216.06, with most of the cost for a new timing belt/water pump and a valve adjustment. When their repairs did not solve the problem, I called them. They said they would like to put a monitor on the van and drive it until the surge happened again. I told them to let me drive the van with the monitor, as the next surge might not happen for several months, and I needed to drive the van on a daily basis for work. They said they weren't allowed to let customers use the monitor! I finally had time today to research the surging problem. I noticed on [XXX] that this problem with Honda has never been figured out or fixed! And it keeps happening on even newer Honda Odysseys! I now have the resources to quit driving this van. I would be willing to donate the van to the NHTSA so that they may research and try to figure out how to stop this defect! No telling how many people have been injured or killed due to this defect. The engine VCM system is burning oil and destroying emissions systems on the vehicle. Catalytic converters are mainly affected as burned oil goes through the exhaust system. The check engine light comes on and the the engine starts to misfire and very abrupt engine vibrations make it into the cabin.
The transmission was making noise and missing and the vehicle was not picking up speed.
The contact owns a 2005 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while driving approximately 25 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power, power steering and braking functionality before the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to coast into a parking lot. The contact did not notice any warning lights being illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to her residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the drive belt needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle had become difficult to turn with the occasional recurring loss of power steering functionality. The contact related the steering failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 05V039000 (Steering). The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 190,000.

While servicing the timing components I notice the timing belt not damage. But the tensioner was out of place with a bolt broken and the other was missing like it was never bolted
ON 05 HONDA ODYSSEY TOURING AT 170,000 THE VEHICLE WILL BECOME SO POWERLESS. WONT SHIFT. LET IT COOL DOWN EVEN WITH A EXTRA TRANNY COOLER AND CLEANED THE SYLENOIDS AND REPLACED TRANSMISSION FILTER AND FLUID DID A FLUSH TO. IT STILL IS GUTTLESS. I HAVE DONE EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS TO DO, NOTHING CHANGES. DID HAVE TRANNY BLOWING OUT TRANNY FLIUID AND GOT THAT FIXED . AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR A TIME FRAME AND THE FLUID GET HOT THE VEHICLE THEN LOOSES ALL ITS POWER. THIS IS BAD AND IT MUST BE RECALLED .

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 HONDA ODYSSEY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, A LOUD NOISE WAS HEARD UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER ONTO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CONTACT OPENED THE HOOD AND NOTICED A GAPING HOLE IN THE ENGINE BLOCK FROM WHERE THE IGNITION COIL AND SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF THE ENGINE. THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER WAS NOT CALLED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE BACK MOTOR MOUNT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE LOW MILEAGE IN THIS VEHICLE AND THE ENGINE SHUDDERS WHEN IT IS IN THE ECO SETTING.
MY HONDA ODYSSEY IS BURNING TOO MUCH OIL THAN IT SHOULD. I AM NEEDING TO ADD 1 QUART EVERY 2 WEEKS IF THAT AS IT IS ALREADY DOWN 1 QUART. IT IS REGULARLY ON TIME GOING IN FOR OIL CHANGES AND HAS BEEN SERVICED SINCE I'VE BOUGHT IT IN 2015. IT HAS HAD MANY OTHER ISSUES AND HAS BEEN REPAIRED. NOW THIS IS SEEMINGLY A PROBLEM. THE OIL PERCENTAGE IS NOT TELLING ME THAT IT IS LOW OR NONE AT ALL. NO OIL DUMMY LIGHTS HAVE COME ON WHEN I HAVE NOT A DROP OF OIL. I HAVE SWITCHED AND USED HIGH MILEAGE OIL RATHER THAN CONVENTIONAL AND GO EVERY 3,000 MILES & EVEN DID A TREATMENT RECENTLY. NOTHING IS DOING THE JOB.

OUR 2005 HONDA ODYSSEY VIBRATES, ESPECIALLY AROUND 35-45 MPH. HONDA TOLD US THAT THE ENGINE MOUNTS HAVE BROKEN AND THAT IS WHAT IS CAUSING IT. THEY ARE NOT A CHEAP FIX. ENGINE MOUNTS, THE LAST THING THAT YOU WOULD THINK WOULD GO OUT ON A VEHICLE! YET, WHEN YOU GO ONLINE, THIS APPARENTLY SEEMS TO BE A MASSIVE PROBLEM WITH THESE VANS. HONDA HAS A PROBLEM WITH THEIR ENGINE MOUNTS BRAKING AND THIS SEEMS TO BE OK WITH THEM. THIS IS NOT OK. THEY NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS FAILURE. WE HAVE ALREADY BEEN THROUGH HAVING TO REPLACE MANY OTHER FAILURES FROM HONDA THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, INCLUDING REPLACING THE FUEL CAP BEFORE THEY RECALLED IT. WE WILL NO LONGER BE PURCHASING HONDA VEHICLES.

TWO ISSUES: HOW WAS IT DETERMINED THIS PART WAS BAD AND WITH SUCH A SIGNIFICANT PRICE FOR ONE OF THEM (THERE ARE TWO ON THIS MODEL), I TAKE ISSUE WITH THE OBVIOUSLY FLAWED DESIGN. I AM SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING LEGAL ACTION REFERENCING BOTH THE ABOVE ISSUES. MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS A FAULT DESIGN TO DRIVE SERVICE SALES LATER IN THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE.

ON JUNE 15, 2015 MY 2005 HONDA ODYSSEY AIRBAG SYSTEM LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED UNTIL NOW, I WAS SCARED DUE TO AIRBAG MIGHT BLOWN OUT OR CAUSING ANY TROUBLE WHILE VEHICLE IN USE OR WORST SOMETHING HAPPEN. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO HONDA DEALER ON JUNE 16, AND I WAS TOLD NO RECALLS. THEY DID SOME DIAGNOSE AND I WAS TOLD IT WAS THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE AND WIRING ON DRIVER SIDE, THE BUCKLE WAS REPLACE (FREE OF CHARGE), BUT THE WIRING COST $550 TO HAVE IT FIX. I REFUSED THE SERVICE DUE TO NO SENSE AND NOT ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO PROVE THE ISSUE. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND SAME ISSUE ON SAME VEHICLE THAT HAS AIRBAG SYSTEM LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD. I DO BELIEVE THAT THE DEALER SHOULD ADDRESS THIS AS RECALL ESPECIALLY IF THE VEHICLE NEVER BEEN IN ACCIDENT. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THERE IS ANYTHING YOU CAN DO TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. THANKS

THIS IS VERY STRESSFUL ON MY ENGINE. MY VAN IS ONLY USED FOR LOCAL TRAVEL, ABOUT 20 MILES PER DAY AND I HAVE BEEN NEEDING TO ADD OIL ABOUT ONCE PER MONTH, STILL WITH NO LEAKS. I UNDERSTAND THERE IS A CLASS ACTION SUIT FOR HONDA ODYSSEYS 2008-2013 FOR EXCESSIVE OIL BURNING, ENTERING THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER AND BURNING EXCESSIVE OIL AT NORMAL OPERATING SPEEDS AND CONDITIONS. COPIED FROM THE INTERNET, HTTP://WWW.HONDAPROBLEMS.COM/TRENDS/EXCESSIVE-OIL-CONSUMPTION/ THE ORIGINAL LAWSUIT CLAIMS HONDA HID THE PROBLEM FROM CONSUMERS. THE TSB STATES THAT "THE VCM (VARIABLE CYLINDER MANAGEMENT) MAY BE REPEATEDLY SWITCHING ON AND OFF DURING LIGHT THROTTLE OPERATION, AT CRUISING SPEEDS, ON FLAT ROADS." ESSENTIALLY, THE ENGINE IS WORKING MUCH HARDER THAN IT HAS TO IN NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. IN FACT, IF YOUR COMMUTE DOESN'T CONSIST OF CLIMBING THROUGH THE ROCKIES, YOU'RE PROBABLY GOING TO SEE MORE OIL CONSUMPTION THAN NORMAL. JUST SPOKE TO AMERICAN HONDA WHO ADVISED I NEED TO TAKE MY VEHICLE TO HONDA FOR AN INSPECTION.

I SEARCHED ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF HONDA'S OWNERS THAT ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE WITH HONDA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN 2000 - 2012. THE ENGINE MOUNTS ON HONDA VEHICLES, ESPECIALLY THE ODYSSEY, BREAK EASILY AND THIS SEEMS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW THAT HONDA HAS NEGLECTED TO CORRECT. ENGINE MOUNTS SHOULD NOT BREAK AT ABOUT 50,000 MILES. THEY SHOULD LAST EVEN MUCH LONGER THAN 100,000 MILES. THE COST OF REPLACING THE ENGINE MOUNT RUNS AT APPROXIMATELY $1000/MOUNT, WHICH IS VERY EXPENSIVE. PLEASE HELP LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE. I DROVE IT TO JUST THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY WHERE THERE WERE SOME STORES. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THAT JUST PERFORMED PREVENTIVE TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT. SAID THAT THEY FOUND BROKEN/SEIZED SPARK PLUG IN CYLINDER 2. THE WORK WAS DONE AT 76000. CURRENT MILES IS 77990. THE ISSUE SEEM TO BE HAPPENING TO 2005 HONDA ODYSSEY. *TR

I WAS RETURNING HOME AND AFTER DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY FOR APPROXIMATELY 45 MINUTES OF DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH I HEARD A POP UNDER THE HOOD OF MY VAN AND BEGAN TO SEE SMOKE. I WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE AND HAD TO TURN ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS AND PULL OFF THE FREEWAY AT THE NEXT EXIT. UPON TAKING MY VEHICLE TO MY MECHANIC, I WAS TOLD MY TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED. *TR

WITH NO PRIOR WARNING THE VEHICLE BEGAN SMOKING OUT OF THE TAIL PIPE. WHEN PULLED OVER, CAR WAS SMOKING UNDER HOOD AND ALL FLUID POURED OUT OF THE BOTTOM. HAD CAR TOWED TO MECHANIC. "BLOWN OR CRACKED" HEAD GASKET WAS HIS DIAGNOSIS. HAD CAR TOWED TO SHOP TO HAVE REPAIRED. AFTER TWO WEEKS IN THE SHOP, THE MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT THE CAR WAS STILL LEAKING ANTIFREEZE INTO THE OIL AND THAT THERE IS A POROUS LEAK SOMEWHERE IN THE ENGINE. THIS CAR IS NOT ABUSED AND I HAVE REGULAR OIL CHANGES WITH FULLY SYNTHETIC OIL. THIS IS JUST ICING ON THE CAKE. I WAS EXCITED TO PURCHASE THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE HONDA HAS SUCH A GREAT NAME. IN THE SUMMER OF 2009 I HAD TO REPAIR THE AIR CONDITIONING ($900) AND REPLACE WHEEL BEARINGS ($300). THIS WAS JUST A FEW MONTHS AFTER I REPLACED THE TIRES FOR THE FIRST TIME ($2000). (PURCHASED VEHICLE USED IN 2008 W/ 35000 MILES) IN 2010 IT WAS TIME FOR TIRES AGAIN (NOT EVEN 20K MILES LATER). I DEPAXED THEM FOR $2000 AND AM STILL RUNNING ON THIS SAME SET OF TIRES. IT SEEMS THAT THE ENGINE PROBLEM IS A DEFECT WITH HONDA AND FROM WHAT I AM READING, THEY WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. I HAVE NOT CONTACTED HONDA IN ANY WAY BUT WAS CURIOUS IF IT WOULD MATTER. *TR

CAR WAS PURCHASED WITH BROKEN MOTOR MOUNTS, BUT IT HAS NEVER BEEN IN A CRASH. SEEMS TO BE A COMMON THEME WITH THIS ODYSSEY. PAID OVER $900 TO GET ALL 3 REPLACED AT HONDA DEALERSHIP. SEEMS TO BE A VERY POOR DESIGN. *TR

I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT HONDA NOW HAS A SOFTWARE FIX FOR SHUDDERING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS AND SHAKING. OUR 2005 ODYSSEY TOURING WOULD SHAKE BETWEEN 35-45 MPH. WE HAD THE TRANSMISSION SERVICED SEVERAL TIME AND NEVER HAD A BROKEN ENGINE MOUNT. HONDA JUST CAME OUT WITH THIS FIX IN LATE JUNE 2012 AND IT SEEMS TO HAVE SOLVED OUR PROBLEM. OUR HONDA GARAGE INSTALLED THIS SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR FREE EVEN THOUGH WE NOW HAVE 122K. IT ONLY TAKES 15 MINUTES. HOPE THIS HELPS. *TR

THREE DAYS AFTER PURCHASING THE ODYSSEY VAN, A SEVERE VIBRATION IN THE FRONT END OCCURRED. IT WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE ELECTRONIC MOTOR MOUNTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. 1500.00 LATER, THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED. ON JUNE 28, 2012, WITH 122000 MILES ON THE SAME ODYSSEY VAN, THE SAME MOTOR MOUNTS NEED TO BE REPLACED. THIS TIME, ALL THREE NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF 2200.00. *TR

LIKE MANY OTHERS IT APPEARS HONDA HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND OTHER THAN CHARGING THE CUSTOMER FOR THE EXCESSIVELY PRICED PART TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE THAT SEEMS IT MAY OCCUR AGAIN AFTER 50K. SEEMS LIKE A RACKET TO ME. OUR RECENT VISIT TO THE DEALERSHIP DIDN'T EVEN NEED THE SERVICE ADVISER TO CHECK OUT THE PROBLEM. APPARENTLY JUST MENTIONING VIBRATION AND THEY KNOW THAT IT'S THE MOTOR MOUNT. IF HONDA DOESN'T VOLUNTEER TO RECALL THIS ISSUE AND NHTSA DOESN'T FIND JUST CAUSE, I THINK PERHAPS A CLASS ACTION SUIT WILL REMEDY THE SITUATION. *JS

VEHICLE HAS BEEN EXHIBITING A VERY HARSH SHAKING/VIBRATION WHILE IN ECO MODE. THIS IS DISTRACTING AS WELL AS UNCOMFORTABLE. RECENTLY THE VIBRATION HAS GOTTEN SO BAD, WE CAN NOT SEE OUT OF ANY OF THE MIRRORS AS THE SHAKING VIBRATES THEM TO THE POINT OF COMPLETE USELESSNESS. THE WORST PART IS THAT WE JUST PAID $2000 AT A DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE REAR MOTOR MOUNT AND FLUSH TRANSMISSION AGAIN. WE HAVE HAD THIS VAN SINCE 60K AND SERVICED TRANSMISSION FOUR TIMES NOW, REPLACING MOTOR MOUNT TWICE. THIS TIME, WITH NO APPARENT EFFECT. *TR
