ON 05 HONDA ODYSSEY TOURING AT 170,000 THE VEHICLE WILL BECOME SO POWERLESS. WONT SHIFT. LET IT COOL DOWN EVEN WITH A EXTRA TRANNY COOLER AND CLEANED THE SYLENOIDS AND REPLACED TRANSMISSION FILTER AND FLUID DID A FLUSH TO. IT STILL IS GUTTLESS. I HAVE DONE EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS TO DO, NOTHING CHANGES. DID HAVE TRANNY BLOWING OUT TRANNY FLIUID AND GOT THAT FIXED . AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR A TIME FRAME AND THE FLUID GET HOT THE VEHICLE THEN LOOSES ALL ITS POWER. THIS IS BAD AND IT MUST BE RECALLED .

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR A SECOND OPINION WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE LOCAL DEALERS WANTED A SMALL FORTUNE TO REPAIR IT, MORE THAN THE CAR WAS WORTH IT. I LEARNED THAT IT IS A TYPICAL PROBLEM WITH THOSE HONDA ODYSSEYS. THE CAR HAS BEEN REPAIRED THOUGH.

THE VEHICLE SHOOK EXCESSIVELY EACH TIME THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE PERFORMED EXTENSIVE DIAGNOSTIC TESTING, BUT WAS UNABLE TO PROVIDE A SPECIFIC REMEDY TO PREVENT THE FAILURE. WE HAVE OWNED OUT DARK BLUE 2005 HONDA ODYSSEY FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 YEARS. RECENTLY, I AM FINDING THAT THE PAINT ALONG THE ROOF AND SIDE/FRONT TRIM PANELS IS CHIPPING AWAY. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO SAND SOME OF THE BED SPOTS AND PAINT /PROTECT AGAIN, BUT IT IS NO USE. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE WITH THE BASE LAYER BELOW THE BLUE PAINT. I HAVE SEEN WHERE THIS WAS IDENTIFIED, BUT I DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO GO FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THIS DEFECT THE SECOND AREA OF CONCERN IS IN THE WIRING FOR THE RADIO AND TEMPERATURE CONTROL. THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOOSE WIRE OR CONNECTION BEHIND THE PANELS. THE BACK-LIGHTS FOR THE RADIO AND TEMPERATURE CONTROL WILL TURN ON OR OFF WITH NO WARNING OR INDICATION AS TO WHY. THE SYSTEMS THEMSELVES WORK FINE, IT'S ONLY THE VISIBLE LIGHTS THAT FLICKER, OR TURN OFF AND ON WITH NO PATTERN. MY FEAR IS THAT IT IS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM THAT MAY CAUSE A FIRE IF THE CROSSING OF WIRES OR SHORTING CONTINUES. THIS WILL HAPPEN WHEN DRIVING, SITTING STILL, CAR OFF (POWER ON), THERE IS NO COMMON FLAG OR TRIGGER THAT WOULD POINT TO A PROBLEM. AND ALL FUNCTIONS WORK (EVEN WHEN LIGHTS ARE OFF). ALSO, THE CAR JUST STARTED TO VIBRATE WHEN ACCELERATION BETWEEN 55-65. ON JUNE 22, 2016 GOING UP HILL, AND TRYING TO ACCELERATE TO PICK UP SPEED, THE SPEEDOMETER WOULD NOT MOVE. PUSHING ON THE GAS DID NOTHING. I CONTINUED TO MOVE UNTIL THE HILL BECAME TO STEEP, AND THE CAR JUST STOPPED. STARTING TO ROLL BACKWARDS, I HIT THE BRAKES AND HELD ON FOR DEAL LIFE. ONCE AGAIN AAA HAD TO TOW MY CAR TO HONDA. WELL, GUESS WHAT THEY SAID THIS TIME. YOU NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. YES, THAT IS WHAT THEY SAID THIS 2ND TIME. AT 140K MILES, I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION, AND IT IS GOING TO COST ME $6,000. WFT! I HOPE TO MAKE NEAREST SAFE AREA TO PULL OVER (REST PLAZA LESS THAN 7 MILES AWAY) GOT 4 MILES. HAD REDUCED SPEED TO RELIEVE STRESS ON TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE. SPEED CONTINUED TO REDUCE SUDDENLY TO BELOW 45 MPH BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO FIND SAFE LOCATION TO PULL OVER. TRANSMISION LOCKED INTO DRIVE POSITION COULD NOT SHIFT TO ANY GEAR. NO GRINDING SOUNDS WERE EVER HEARD. I WAS BY MYSELF BUT THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO ANYONE. COULD LEAD TO DEATH FROM BEING HIT FROM REAR BY ANOTHER CAR OR TRUCK AS TRANSMISSION'S RAPID RATE OF DECELERATION CAUSE BY ITS FAILURE. LOOKED UP BLINKING TRANSMISSION INDICATOR AND DID NOT FIND ANY WARNING OR NOTIFICATION AS TO POSSIBLE CAUSE. FOUND OUT THAT HONDA ODESSESY'S TRANSMISSION HAS HISTORY OF CATISTROPHIC FAILURE IF NOT SERVICED EVERY 35K (VARIES ACCORDING TO COMPLAINT). AGAIN NO WQARNING OF THIS POSSIBLE EVENT MENTIONED IN OWNER'S MANUEL. SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR USED I HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF THIS PROBLEM OR ITS SERVICE RECORD. I DID HAVE IT SERVICED SHORTLY AFTER BUYING IT BUT AGAIN HAD NO WARNING. IRONICALLY, I'M AN AUTOMOTIVE RELIABILITY/SAFETY MANAGER BY PROFESSION.

LEFT US STRANDED 14 HRS FROM HOME. HAD TO BORROW A VAN FROM A FAMILY MEMBER TO GET ALL 7 OF US HOME AGAIN. THE CAR IS NOW IN THE SHOP , NEEDING A $2200. REPAIR. NOT HAPPY WITH HONDA!! ON WEDNESDAY WE JUST HAD AN O2 SENSOR AND RECALL WORK (MASTER CYLINDER & ONE OTHER ISSUE) COMPLETED AT A HONDA DEALER IN GEORGIA. I THEN TOOK IT DOWN THE STREET TO GET TWO NEW TIRES PUT ON THE VEHICLE AT A TIRE SERVICE CENTER. THEY CHECKED THE VEHICLE OUT FOR TRAVEL, GAVE US THE GREEN LIGHT AND BAM! BY 6PM THE FOLLOWING DAY THE TRANSMISSION SOLENOIDS WERE BOTH REPORTED FAILED: P0746 PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID "A" PERFORMANCE/STUCK OFF P0777 PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID "B" STUCK ON P0741 TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH CIRCUIT PERFORMANCE/STUCK OFF WE HOBBLED INTO PANAMA CITY, WHERE I BOOKED A CAR RENTAL FROM THE AIRPORT. THE DEALER IMMEDIATELY ASSESSED THE ISSUES AS A TRANSMISSION FAILURE. WE HAVE RETURNED TO ATLANTA ON A 14 DAY CAR RENTAL SCRAMBLING TO FIND A NEW CAR. THE QUOTE FOR REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION IS $3K. THIS IS PROHIBITIVE ON A 2005. HONDA CORPORATION REFUSED A GOODWILL ASSISTANCE REQUEST. CASE NUMBER AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. AT THAT POINT I WILL HAS SPENT $3.2K ON THE CAR, $400 IN CAR RENTALS (IN GEORGIA WHILE SERVICE WAS BEING PERFORMED, AND FLORIDA TO GET HOME). MY GUESS IS IF I DON'T FIX THE TRANSMISSION THERE WILL BE NO TRADE-IN VALUE FOR THE VEHICLE. IT'S GOT BUMPER, INTERIOR AND FENDER DAMAGE, SO THERE ISN'T MUCH HOPE EVEN IF I DO GO FORWARD WITH THE REPLACEMENT. ALSO, THE ALPHARETTA SERVICE CENTER SAID THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LOOKED FINE, AND HONDA IN PC SAID IT WAS BURNT. THERE EXPLANATION WAS A PART FAILURE IN THE TRANSMISSIONS BURNED THE FLUID. I RECENTLY LEARNED THAT HONDA HAD A SERVICE BULLETIN BUT I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE SAME. IT BASICALLY MEANS HONDA KNEW ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND THERE WERE OTHER OWNERS WHO HAD EXPERIENCED SIMILAR PROBLEM. (PER HONDA IT'S A SERVICE BULLETIN, BUT NOT A RECALL, SO I WAS NOT PRO-ACTIVELY INFORMED ABOUT IT). AS PART OF THE SERVICE BULLETIN THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY (8 YEARS/105K MILES) AND WOULD FIX THE ISSUE FOR FREE. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS. SERVICE BULLETIN: 12-029 WHEN I LEARNED ABOUT THIS MY VEHICLE HAD CROSSED THE AGE BUT NOT THE MILEAGE (2014 AND 103K MILES). I REQUESTED THE DEALER AND HONDA TO MAKE AN EXCEPTION AS I WAS STILL WITHIN THE MILES THAT THEY HAD. I HAD BEEN EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM LONG BEFORE I WAS AWARE, BUT DIDN'T BOTHER TO FIX IT BECAUSE IT DIDN'T BOTHER MY DRIVE. SHOP REFILLED TRANSMISSION FLUID AND SENT US ON OUR WAY. 10 MILES DOWN THE ROAD, IT HAPPENED AGAIN AND THIS TIME I DIDN'T REV THE ENGINE HARD AND PULLED OVER TO FIND THAT THE CAR WILL NOT SHIFT, EITHER DRIVE, OR REVERSE. SMELL OF BURNING TRANSMISSION FLUID. TOWED AGAIN TO THE LOCAL TRANSMISSION SHOP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS IN NEED OF A REBUILD. COST IS UPWARDS OF $2500. WE CANNOT AFFORD A REBUILT TRANSMISSION ESPECIALLY AFTER PAYING OUT TAXES AND BEING AFFECTED BY SANDY JUST BEFORE. HONDA IS NOT HELPING, WAS TOLD THAT THERE ARE NO KNOWN ISSUES WITH YOUR MODEL YEAR AND TRANSMISSION. I KEPT INSISTING THAT THERE ARE MANY FORUMS OUT THERE THAT SAY OTHERWISE BUT HONDA WILL NOT ADMIT THE FACT THAT THEIR TRANSMISSIONS ARE FLAWED. THE TRANSMISSION ON MY 2005 HONDA ODYSSEY HAS TO REPLACED AND HONDA IS CLAIMING THAT IS NORMAL FOR A TRANSMISSION TO GO AT 100000 MILES. VERY UNHAPPY , SLAPPED DOWN $4000 AS A DOWN PAYMENT AND FINANCED THE REST. NOW I OWN A VAN THAT HAS MAJOR PROBLEMS AND NO CASH TO FIX IT. WE TOOK THIS VEHICLE ON A LONG TRIP AND THE SHUDDERING STARTED TO GET WORSE. ON JULY 19, 2010, WE TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE. ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 21ST, THE DEALERSHIP CALLED TO INFORM ME THAT THEY HAD INSTALLED A SOFTWARE UPGRADE FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT IT DIDN'T FIX IT. THEIR RECOMMENDATION WAS EITHER A TORQUE CONVERTER OR A NEW TRANSMISSION. THE TECH WHO WORKED ON MY CAR SAID THEY COULD JUST REPLACE THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND WOULD PROBABLY NOT HAVE ANY MORE PROBLEMS; HOWEVER, HONDA'S RECOMMENDATION WAS TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. THEY WERE WAITING ON THE EXTENDED WARRANTY CO. TO CALL AND SEE IF THIS WAS COVERED. LUCKILY, ON THURSDAY, JULY 22ND, THE WARRANTY CO. SENT SOMEONE OUT TO DECIDE IF THEY WOULD COVER IT. THE WARRANTY CO. DECIDED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION OF MY MONTH OLD CAR TO THE TUNE OF $3700. ON FRIDAY, JULY 23RD, I FINALLY GOT MY VEHICLE BACK. I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE NEW AND VIGILANTLY MAINTAIN IT. WITH FEWER THAN 43,000 MILES, THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILS TO PROPERLY "LOCKUP" AT 45 MPH ON LEVEL GRADE WHEN WARM. THE DEALERS SCAN TOOL INDICATED ABSENCE OF ANY DETECTED ABNORMALITY, BUT THEIR TEST DRIVE CONFIRMED THE SYMPTOM--PULSING POWER TO THE DRIVE WHEELS. THEY TOLD ME THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS FAILING WHICH THEY DON'T REPLACE NOR REPAIR SO THEY SAID IT NEEDS A NEW TRANSMISSION. THEY SAID IT WAS OK TO DRIVE. THEY NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED A HISTORY OF TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS NOR ANY RELATED SERVICE CAMPAIGNS OR TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS. WE FIRST NOTICED A SEVERE VIBRATION IN OUR CAR ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO WHEN TRAVELING BETWEEN 65-70 MPH. TOOK HONDA ODY TO DEALER TO HAVE THEM REVIEW. SUGGESTED WE ROTATE AND BALANCE TIRES (AS WE HAVE DONE WITH NEARLY EACH OIL CHANGE). CAR HAD 20K MILES. WE DID AS SUGGESTED BUT VIBRATION CONTINUED. WE DROVE THE CAR TO SOUTH FLORIDA (8 HOURS OF DRIVING) AND THE VIBRATION SEEMED TO WORSEN. WENT TO DIFFERENT LOCAL HONDA DEALER TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT IT. THEY SUGGESTED ANOTHER BALANCE AND ALIGNMENT. WE SAID OK (ANOTHER $150) AND THEY SAID THEIR TECH DROVE IT AND IT WAS GONE. GREAT - TOOK THE CAR HOME AND EXPERIENCED IT AGAIN ON MY TEST LOOP HOME. CALLED SECOND DEALER AGAIN WHO TOOK CAR IN. FIRST THEY LOOKED AT THE PAX SYSTEM AND SAID WE NEED NEW TIRES AND THAT SHOULD FIX IT. THEY THEN PUT NEW TIRES ON FROM A NEW ODY ON THEIR LOT. DID NOT RESOLVE IT. NOW THEY FEEL IT IS THE FRONT AXLES THAT ARE DEFECTIVE AND STILL HAVE THE CAR. HOPEFULLY THIS WILL FIX THE PROBLEMS BUT NOT FROM WHAT I HAVE READ FROM OTHER CONSUMERS OF THE 2005 HONDA ODY... I FEEL ALL THIS WILL RECUR. SO, TWO PROBLEMS. THE PAX SYSTEM TOUTED FOR SAFETY AND LONGEVITY HAS ALMOST BALD SIDE EDGES OF EACH TIRE AT 22K MILES NOW. IS THIS SAFE FOR MY FAMILY? NOW I NEED TO REPLACE THEM FOR $1K. SECOND ISSUE IS FAULTY AXLES THAT ARE WORN AT 22K MILES. WOW. SEEMS TO BE SOME SERIOUS SAFETY AND DESIGN DEFECTS IN THIS $40K VEHICLE THAT WOULD NOT BE ACCEPTED ON A $20K CAR. *JB

THREE PEOPLE FROM THE DEALERSHIP DID AN INVESTIGATION ,TWO PEOPLE CONFIRMED THE FAILURE AND ONE DID NOT. THE VEHICLE WAS MAKING A SOUND WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MPH, IT LIKE A VERY LOUD HUMMING NOISE. HE HEARD THE NOISE THE DAY BEFORE THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP AT 40 MPH, AND THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME HE HAD HEARD THE NOISE AT A LOW SPEED. IT OCCURRED MORE TRAVELING UP OR DOWN A HILL OR WHEN YOU PUT STRESS ON THE ENGINE. THE DEALERSHIP DID SOME ADDITIONAL TESTING AND DID NOT HEAR THE NOISE THE FIRST TIME. THEY DID NOT HEAR IT THE SECOND TIME. THE THIRD TIME THEY DID HEAR THE NOISE. AFTER THE ADDITIONAL TESTING THEY FOUND THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS ONE OTHER COMPLAINTS FILED WITH THE NHTSA ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. INITIALLY, THIS VEHICLE WOULD DO THIS SOUND MORE OFTEN AT HIGHER SPEEDS.
