The passenger side door of my 2008 Honda Odyssey fell off when attempting to close it and nearly fell onto my child. The automatic sliding door was closing and around halfway closed it fell off of the track and started opening back up unprompted, thus damaging the rear right quarter panel as well. This is a major safety issue as it nearly crushed my [XXX] daughter, but thankfully was caught in time. A man parked near us in the parking lot helped us pick the door back up and said the same thing happened to him, also in a 2008 Honda Odyssey! My doors wasn't latching or shutting all the way. The power doors and windows wouldn't work sometimes. Then the back sliding door fell off. Engaged the automatic door and damaged the side of the van. I seen there were recalls but none for my Vin I don't know what to do.
The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that when opening the rear driving sliding door, the door detached. The door ended up falling to the ground onto the contact's foot causing permanent injury. Medical attention was needed. The dealer was contacted who stated they were no recall on the vehicle. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact stated they noticed that the door was attached by two small arms on the front end of the door (none on the rear end of the door) and a wheel with the track. There was nothing else there to hold the door. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and opened a case regarding the matter. The approximate failure mileage was unknown.
VAN SIDE SLIDING DOORS HAVE REAR LOCKING LATCH ACUATOR THAT FAILS. UNDER POWER CLOSE, THE REAR OF THE DOOR WILL PULL IN, LATCH, THEN UNLATCH AND RELEASE THE REAR OF THE DOOR. WITH POWER TO DOORS OFF (FUSE #13 REMOVED) THE DOOR REAR LATCH WILL NOT ENGAGE AT ALL. THE DOOR WITH A FAILED REAR LATCH WILL ALLOW THE DOOR TO SLIDE OPEN COMPLETELY ON ACCELERATION, SLAM FORWARD BUT NOT LATCH ON BRAKING, AND WILL ALSO SLIDE OPEN AROUND A CORNER. THIS HAPPENED TO ME WHILE I HAD 2 CHILDREN IN THE CENTER SEAT, AT THE SLIDING DOOR OPENINGS. DEALER WANTS $511 PLUS TAX, AND THERE IS A REBUILD SERVICE FOR THE REAR LATCH ON EBAY FOR AROUND $90, PROVING IT IS A CHRONIC, WIDE SPREAD PROBLEM. AS A SIDE NOTE, IF THE 7.5 AMP FUSE IS LEFT INSTALLED IN SLOT 13 FOR SLIDING DOOR POWER, THE BATTERY WILL DISCHARGE OVER NIGHT. THE DEALER WILL NOT GUARANTEE I WILL NOT HAVE A POWER DISCHARGE AFTER THE REAR LATCH (MY LEFT SIDE DOOR IN MY CASE) IS CHANGED, AND FUSE 13 IS REINSTALLED. I'M GLAD MY KIDS WERE STRAPPED IN WHEN THE DOOR FLEW OPEN THE FIRST TIME. THE DOOR WOULD CHOP OFF A HAND IF IT SLAMS SHUT WHILE BREAKING THE VEHICLE. THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL ISSUE, AND HONDA SHOULD BE MADE TO RECTIFY THE REAR LATCH (UNLATCHED) ISSUE. SLIDING DOOR ON DRIVERS SIDE STARTED TO BECOME HARD TO OPEN WITHOUT RESISTANCE. EVENTUALLY DIDN'T OPEN MORE THAN HALF WAY. IT BECAME SO HARD TO CLOSE THAT IT NEEDED TO BE PUSHED AFTER THE INITIAL CLOSING. BEFORE IT WAS TAKEN IN FOR REPAIRS THE DOOR COMPLETELY FELL OF THE TRACK ALONG THE SIDE AND TOP OF THE DOOR TRACK. IT WAS HANGING ON BY THE BOTTOM TRACK ALONE. IT APPEARS THE ROLLERS FOR THE TRACK HAVE BROKEN COMPLETELY AND ARE NO LONGER ATTACHED.

FOR SOME REASON MY PARTICULAR VAN IS NOT INCLUDED IN AT LEAST 2 RECALLS WHERE OTHER SAME YEAR ODYSSEYS ARE INCLUDED. THESE ALL HAVE THE SAME ENGINE, TRANSMISSION AND FUEL SYSTEM. MY VAN WAS DIAGNOSED BY A MECHANIC AS HAVING A FUEL PUMP MODULE LEAK, WHICH IS RECALLED FOR SOME 2008 ODUSSSEYS, BUT CURIOUSLY NOT FOR MINE. THE SAME SITUATION EXISTS FOR THE TAILGATE STAY GAS LEAKAGE, AGAIN, ALSO RECALLED ON SOME 2008 ODYSSEYS BUT NOT ALL.

THE AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR ON THE DRIVERS SIDE, WHEN OPENED, BECAME DETACHED FROM THE RAILS BOTH TOP & BOTTOM FALLING COMPLETELY OFF, HANGING ONLY BY THE CABLE. BADLY SCRAPPING THE SIDE OF THE VAN THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE DOOR. APPARENTLY HONDA HAS BEEN AWARE OF THIS DESIGN DEFECT FOR MANY YEARS, BUT UNLIKE TOYOTA WHO HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS, HONDA HAS NOT YET ISSUED A RECALL. ASIDE FROM THE OBVIOUS MALFUNCTIONING OF THE DOOR THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS IF NOT FATAL INJURIES TO A SMALL CHILD. THE OPEN BUTTON ON THE DASHBOARD PANEL WAS HIT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A DRIVEWAY(NOT RUNNING). THE DOOR MADE A GRINDING SOUND, OPENED, FELL OFF IT'S TRACKS AND CONTINUED TO OPEN SCRAPING ALL THE WAY DOWN THE SIDE OF THE VAN AND HANGING BY ONLY THE CABLE WHEN IT STOPPED. FROM LOOKING ON THE INTERNET & FROM TALKING TO A HONDA SERVICE REP, THIS SEEMS TO BE A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM WHICH HONDA HAS CHOSEN TO IGNORE. THE SERVICE PERSONS' ONLY COMMENT WAS THAT MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT HONDA PLANS TO DO ABOUT THIS KNOWN DEFECT. ARE THEY WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO BE SERIOUSLY INJURED OR WORSE? WOULDN'T IT MAKE SENSE TO DO A RECALL AND FIX THE PROBLEM BEFORE A MAJOR INJURY AND LARGE LAWSUIT?

WHILE STATIONARY IN A PARKING LOT, WHILE OPENING THE PASSENGER SIDE SLIDING DOOR THE ENTIRE DOOR JUMPED OUT OF THE CHANNEL, ALMOST FALLING ON TOP OF MYSELF AND OTHERS AND DAMAGING THE SIDE OF THE CAR AND RENDERING THE DOOR USELESS. THE BEARINGS FOR THE DOOR APPEAR TO BE FACTORY ORIGINALS AND ARE MADE OF A CHEAP PLASTIC THAT HAS BROKEN. THIS APPEARS TO BE DANGEROUS AND COMMON FOR ODYSSEES. I HAVE NEVER HAD A CAR EVER HAVE A DOOR JUMP OUT OF A TRACK LIKE THIS AND I HAVE HAD ASTRO VANS SINCE THE 1980S, AND STILL CURRENTLY OWN A 2002 THAT HAS NEVER HAD SUCH AN ISSUE. SLIDING DOORS SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SPRING OUT OF TRACKS THIS WAY OR USE SUCH EASILY BROKEN, UNRELIABLE PARTS.

WHILE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, THE MANUAL REAR TAILGATE GAS-CHARGED LIFT STRUTS/STAYS FAILED WITHOUT WARNING, CAUSING THE REAR TAILGATE TO FALL ON THE OCCUPANT WITH SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT AND VELOCITY, CAUSING MINOR HEAD INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER (PEARSON HONDA, 14001 HULL STREET RD, MIDLOTHIAN, VA, 23112), BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO REMOVE THE PANEL AND ASKED FOR PERMISSION TO POSSIBLY DAMAGE THE PANEL, BUT AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CONTACT. THE CONTACT DID NOT AUTHORIZE THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 180,000.

WHEN I TRIED TO CLOSE IT, IT WOULD NOT CLOSE COMPLETELY, AND WHEN I GAVE IT ANOTHER HARD PULL, IT CAME COMPLETELY OFF. THE CENTER SIDE ROLLER HAD COME COMPLETELY OFF TRACK. I WAS ABLE TO HOLD THE DOOR UP WITH SOME DIFFICULTY, BUT WAS UNABLE TO GET THE SIDE ROLLER BACK IN TRACK. THANKFULLY, I WAS ABLE TO REMOVE THE SIDE ROLLER APPARATUS FROM THE DOOR, GET THE UPPER ROLLER SOMEWHAT BACK ON TRACK, AND GET THE DOOR CLOSED. OTHERWISE, WE WOULD HAVE BEEN STRANDED. AS HEAVY AS THAT DOOR WAS, IT COULD HAVE REALLY HURT MY CHILD IF IT HAD FALLEN INWARD ON HER, AND I WAS VERY FORTUNATE THAT IT DID NOT HURT ME. VEHICLE WAS OBVIOUSLY STATIONARY IN A PARKING LOT WHEN THIS OCCURRED.

AFTER DRIVING HOME IN A HEAVY RAIN STORM FOUND LARGE CHUNKS OF PAINT MISSING FROM THE HOOD AND ROOF OF THE VEHICLE. TOOK TO A PAINT SHOP WHO SAID IT IS PAINT FAILURE. CAN SEE PAINT BUBBLING UP NEXT TO THE PEELED AREAS.

WIFE'S VAN FACTORY PAINT IS PEELING OFF IN LARGE CHUNKS. DEALERSHIP BLOWS IT OFF SAYING NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THAT'S RIDICULOUS! I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH A THING.
THE POWER LIFT GATE STRUTS (?) STOPPED WORKING CAUSING THE LIFT GATE TO COLLAPSE ON MY HEAD CAUSING A SMALL CUT. AFTER THEY STOPPED WORKING, THE LIFT GATE WOULD NOT POWER LIFT OR STAY OPEN UNLESS YOU MANUALLY HELD IT OPEN. MY 2005 ODYSSEY HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND IT WAS FIXED WITH A RECALL.

REAR DOOR'S STRUTS DOES NOT WORK. THE HATCHBACK REAR DOOR SLAMS SHUT AND DOES NOT HOLD. THERE WAS A RECALL REGARDING STRUT DEFECT IN 2012. THE RECALLED ODYSSEYS WERE MANUFACTURED IN ALABAMA FACTORY WHERE OUR CAR WAS MANUFACTURED. JUST WONDER WHY OUR VEHICLE IS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. I HAVE DISCOVERED THIS IS VERY EASY TO FIX - $50 FOR THE STRUTS, A FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER, AND LADDER TO PROP OPEN THE TAILGATE AND EVEN A 115 LB WOMAN CAN FIX THEM. HOWEVER, WHY AREN'T ALL 2008 HONDA ODYSSEYS IN THIS RECALL? HAD MY CHILDREN BEEN HELPING ME OR HAD I BEEN HALF IN THE VAN WHEN THE STRUTS SUDDENLY FAILED, ANY OF US COULD HAVE BEEN BADLY INJURED OR KILLED BY THE DEAD WEIGHT OF THAT DOOR. HONDA ALREADY HAS A RECALL FOR THE SAME ISSUE FOR POWERED LIFTGATE FOR 2008-9 MODELS, BUT IT DOESN'T INCLUDE MANUAL OPENING ODYSSEYS, CLAIMING THAT A DEGRADED STRUT IN A MANUAL LIFTGATE WILL BE NOTICEABLE. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE FOR US. CONSIDERING ODYSSEYS ARE BUILT FOR FAMILIES, I FEEL THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE SINCE MY OLDER CHILDREN FREQUENTLY OPERATE THE TAILGATES WITHOUT OUR HELP. WHEN USING THE AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR ON MY 2008 ODYSSEY, THE DOOR'S SENSOR FAILED TO AUTO-REVERSE WHEN MY 2 1/2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER REACHED HER HAND TOWARDS THE DOOR OF THE VAN FROM THE INSIDE. NOT ONLY WERE HER FINGERS AND UPPER HAND HIT BY THE CLOSING DOOR, BUT THE DOOR FAILED TO OPEN AND REMAINED SHUT ON HER HAND UNTIL I MANUALLY OPENED IT. THIS RESULTED IN AN OBVIOUS INJURY TO HER HAND AND A TRIP TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM. X-RAYS DID NOT REVEAL A BREAK, BUT SHE WILL HAVE TO BE RE-CHECKED WITH AN ORTHOPEDIC, AS IT MAY HAVE DAMAGED THE GROWTH PLATE IN HER FINGER.
