Honda Pilot Years to Avoid
The 2016 Pilot is the worst model year, introducing a troublesome 9-speed automatic transmission with rough shifting, hesitation, and electronic glitches. The 2017-2018 Pilots continued 9-speed issues before Honda improved calibration. The 2003-2004 first-generation Pilots had transmission failures similar to the Odyssey of that era. The 2005 model year had excessive vibration and fuel system concerns. The 2013-2015 Pilots with the 6-speed had some transmission shuddering issues. Avoid the 2016-2017 Pilot unless you can test drive extensively.
Best Honda Pilot Years
The 2024-2025 Pilots represent Honda's best effort with sorted transmission programming and improved build quality. The 2019-2022 Pilots show improvement after the 9-speed issues were addressed. The 2009-2012 second-generation Pilots with the 5-speed automatic are proven reliable.
