Transmission locks up when vehicle has been driven for a short time
The contact owns a 2004 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while driving at 60 MPH, the transmission was shifted into drive(D) and the vehicle shuddered. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 04V176000 (Power Train). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the transmission fluid was flushed 3 times; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated that the failure recurred while the vehicle is shifted into drive(D) and D3. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.

I was approaching a stop sign and slowing down to < 10 miles and the engine continued to slow down and the car started to push forward while I was totally pressing on the brake - it did not want to stop and kept pushing forward. I wasn't sure what was happening and quickly put it in neutral. My daughter who drives the car to school was sitting in the passenger seat and was completely shocked. I have been driving for 30+ years and at that moment felt things were totally out of my control. Extremely off to see a car keep going when you are trying to stop. I could 100% have hit someone if there was a car in front of me as I went two car lengths before realizing what was happening. I turned the car off. Started again and it was fine. This happened on Saturday, March 26th, 2022. I have not taken the car to the dealer. There were no lights or anything indicating any warning.

UPON LOOKING FURTHER, I SEE THAT-INDEED-ONE RECALL IS FOR THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS! THEN, WHEN I DID ANOTHER SEARCH, SPECIFIC TO MY VIN #, I SAW THAT MY PARTICULAR PILOT DOES NOT HAVE ANY RECALL ON IT. YET, NOW, THE TRANSMISSION IS FAILING, AND I ONLY JUST PURCHASED MY CAR AT THE END OF JANUARY, 2019....I WANT TO AT LEAST MAKE MY BEST EFFORT TO COMPLETE THE PROCESS OF ATTEMPTING TO GET A TRANSMISSION RECALL ON MY CAR-SINCE I NOW THAT OTHER 2004 HONDA PILOTS HAVE GOTTEN ONE. PURCHASED A 2004 HONDA PILOT USED AT 136K MILES. WITHIN A WEEK OF DRIVING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. ENGINE CODES P0700, P0705, P0740 WERE ALL PRESENT, WHICH ARE ALL IN RELATION TO THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THE TRANSMISSION SHOP CONFIRMED THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE ACROSS HONDA & ACURA VEHICLES IN THE '03-'04 RANGE (SEE 2003-2004 ACURA MDX SERVICE BULLETIN 06-003). A DESIGN FLAW IN THE TORQUE CONVERTER CAUSES IT TO BREAK DOWN & SHED METAL FRAGMENTS, WHICH COMPROMISES THE REST OF THE TRANSMISSION. THE ONLY REAL FIX IS TO REBUILD OR REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. HONDA AMERICAS CUSTOMER SERVICE REFUSED TO REVIEW MY CASE ANY FURTHER, EVEN UNDER GOODWILL CONSIDERATION.

IT FEELS AS IF THE VEHICLE IS GOING TO JUST STALL OR POSSIBLY LOCK UP AND CRASH OFF THE ROAD I HAVE AN INFANT SON AND IM AFRAID TO HAVE HIM IN THE VEHICLE. THE CAR WAS BOUGHT OUTRIGHT FROM A CERTIFIED HONDA DEALERSHIP FOR OVER 10,000 $ A FEW YEARS BACK,. AND LIKE I SAID THE CAR IS BARELY DRIVABLE THE STEERING IS VERY UNPREDICTABLE AND WILD IT IS UNRESPONSIVE AT TIMES WHEN IM TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL THE CAR CONTINUES TO GO STRAIGHT. THE NOISE FROM THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL AREA ALONG WITH THE BRAKES ARE SO LOUD WHEN GOING DOWN HILL THAT THEY CAN BE HEARD OVER THE RADIO ON LEVEL 24-27. I OWNED A PRISTINE 2001 ACURA MDX WITH JUST OVER 100K MILES ON IT WHICH EXPERIENCED THE ALL TOO COMMON TRANS./ TORQUE CONVERTER FAILURE ONLY A FEW MONTHS AFTER I PURCHASED IT FROM A HONDA DEALER. THIS HAPPENED IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT THE POWER TRAIN RECALL (SANCTIONED BY NHTSA) HAD BEEN COMPLETED IN 2004. I PARTED WAYS WITH THE VEHICLE, INCURRING A SUBSTANTIAL LOSS. THE VIBRATION BEGAN OCCURRING AT ABOUT 90,000 MILES. AT SPEEDS OF 35-45 MPH THE VIBRATION OCCURS UNDER LIGHT ACCELERATION AND CONTINUES UNTIL I EITHER PUSH DOWN HARDER ON THE GAS PEDAL OR LET OFF IT COMPLETELY. RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET THRU NHTSA HAS FOUND 43 SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. APPARENTLY THIS PROBLEM IS DUE TO A DEFECTIVE TORQUE CONVERTER OR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION THAT IS SIMILAR TO THE ONE ON THE HONDA-MADE ACURA AND HAS BEEN THE SUBJECT OF AN ACURA RECALL. THE DEFECT WILL ULTIMATELY RESULT IN A VEHICLE SAFETY HAZARD WHEN THE TRANSMISSION FAILS. MY HONDA PILOT IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE FIRST SYMPTOM OUR 2004 HONDA PILOT EXPERIENCED WAS A SHUTTER/JERKING OF THE CAR AT A LITTLE UNDER 30 MPH. WE TOOK IT TO THE REPAIR SHOP BUT THE MECHANIC WAS NOT ABLE TO REPLICATE THE CONDITION. THE SHUTTER AND JERKING THEN STARTED HAPPENING BETWEEN 40-45 MPH. WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE SHOP AT WHICH TIME THE MECHANIC WAS ABLE REPLICATE IT. THE TRANSMISSION WAS PULLED AND INSPECTED. THERE WAS HEAT BUILD UP AND DISCOLORATION. ONE OF THE COMPONENTS WAS TOTALLY BURNT. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED AND COULD NOT BE REBUILT. HE WROTE THAT THERE WAS HEAT BUILD UP BETWEEN THE COUNTERSHAFT AND SECONDARY SHAFT 2ND GEAR. HE SUGGESTED THAT I CALL HONDA USA BECAUSE THERE WAS A RECALL ISSUE THAT YEAR. I CALLED HONDA USA. HONDA SAID MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I EXPLAINED THAT THE PROBLEM LOCATED BY MY MECHANIC WAS EXACTLY WHAT THE RECALL WAS ALL ABOUT-HEAT BUILD-UP BETWEEN THE COUNTERSHAFT AND SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, EVENTUALLY LEADING TO GEAR TOOTH CHIPPING OR GEAR BREAKAGE. I TOOK THE CAR TO HONDA BEFORE MY WARRANTY EXPIRED AND THEY STATED THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE NOISE. I CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE, AND THE NOISE WOULD INTERMITTENTLY HAPPEN. I TOOK THE CAR THE NEXT DAY TO THE HONDA DEALERSHIP, AND THEY STATED THAT MY VEHICLE HAD ALREADY RECEIVED THE RECALL, AND THEREFORE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE (TRANSMISSION NUMBER 2 I WILL CALL IT). I ASKED HONDA TO INVESTIGATE THE CAUSE OF THE TRANSMISSION NOISE TO SEE IF IT WAS SOMETHING ELSE. HONDA TESTED THE CAR, AND IT NOW AGAIN NEEDS ANOTHER AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. IF I REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AS THEY RECOMMEND, THIS WILL BE THE 3RD TRANSMISSION IN THE CAR AND I DO NOT EVEN HAVE BUT 117,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE! THE HONDA REPRESENTATIVE STATED THAT THE NOISE WILL CONTINUE AND EVENTUALLY LOCK UP...WHICH COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT IF ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN IT OCCURS. MY 2004 HONDA PILOT REQUIRES A NEW TRANSMISSION AT ~60,000 MILES WITH REPAIR FEE OF $4,000. I FOUND THIS RECALL INFORMATION. I DID NOT RECEIVE THIS RECALL INFORMATION IN THE PAST. I BELIEVE THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD ASSUME FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIR. I AM READING THAT THE TRANSMISSION COULD HAVE LOCKED UP. THIS IS ALARMING AND I AM CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF MANY OTHER FAMILIES (INCLUDING MY FRIENDS) WHO DRIVE THE PILOT. THE REASON WE PURCHASED THE PILOT WAS TO TRANSPORT OUR FOUR CHILDREN AND THEIR FRIENDS. NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 04V176000 COMPONENT: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DETAILS: ON SOME MINI VANS, SPORT UTILITY AND PASSENGER VEHICLES, CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS CAN RESULT IN HEAT BUILD-UP BETWEEN THE COUNTERSHAFT AND SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, EVENTUALLY LEADING TO GEAR TOOTH CHIPPING OR GEAR BREAKAGE. CONSEQUENCE: GEAR FAILURE COULD RESULT IN TRANSMISSION LOCKUP, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH. CORRECTIVE ACTION: ON VEHICLES WITH 15,000 MILES OR LESS, THE DEALER WILL UPDATE THE TRANSMISSION WITH A SIMPLE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE TO INCREASE LUBRICATION TO THE SECOND GEAR. ON VEHICLES WITH MORE THAN 15,000 MILES, THE DEALER WILL INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION TO IDENTIFY GEARS THAT HAVE ALREADY EXPERIENCED DISCOLORATION DUE TO OVERHEATING. IF DISCOLORATION EXISTS, THE TRANSMISSION WILL BE REPLACED IF DISCOLORATION IS NOT PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL PERFORM THE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 21, 2004, FOR PILOT, ODYSSEY, AND MDX OWNERS. A BRAND NEW (2 WEEKS) PILOT WITH LESS THAN 500 MILES. I AM NOW HEARING A CLUNKING/THUMPING NOISE WHEN I SHIFT THE GEAR FROM D->N AND THEN IN TO R. THIS NOISE IS NOT HEARD WHEN SHIFTING JUST FROM N->R. LOOKS LIKE THIS NOISE IS COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I DIDN'T EXPECT THIS KIND OF PROBLEM SO SOON IN A BRAND NEW VEHICLE.
