The contact owns a 2005 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that shortly after refueling, the vehicle suddenly experienced unintended acceleration, causing the speed to increase to approximately 45 MPH while approaching stopped traffic. While pressing the brake pedal to avoid a collision, the vehicle continued to accelerate and crashed into the rear of a second vehicle. During the air bag deployment, the air was deflated, causing the driver's head to contact the steering wheel. Also, the contact indicated that metal fragments were present during the air bag deployment. The contact sustained a lacerated left wrist and lacerations to the chest area. The driver also sustained contusions and bruised to the head, ankles, and legs, along with neck and back stiffness, which will all require medical treatment. No other injuries were known regarding the second vehicle occupants. A Police Report was taken at the scene, and the vehicle was towed away. The cause of the failures was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failures, but no assistance was offered. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 150,000.

2005 PILOT WAS REPAIRED UNDER VSA RECALL IN 2013. AS OF THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS, AGAIN I EXPERIENCED SAME EXACT VEHICLE SAFETY ISSUES PRIOR TO REPAIR. THIS PAST WEEK WHILE I HAD MY THREE CHILDREN IN THE CAR, WE ALMOST LOST OUR LIVES. A SEMI DRIVER INSTEAD RISKED HIS OWN LIVES TO KEEP FROM SLAMMING IN THE BACK OF US. WE TOOK OUR PILOT TO HONDA DEALERSHIP THAT HAS SERVICED OUR VEHICLE OVER THE YEARS AND THEY DO NOT WANT TO RECOGNIZE ISSUE AND INSTEAD POINT TO THE SAME THING I AM NOW READING HERE ONLINE. THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT STATES IT IS THE YAW SENSOR AS THE ISSUE, NOT FAULTY REPAIR. IT IS NOT A COINCIDENCE THAT PILOT OWNERS ARE NOW ONCE AGAIN ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUES ALL OVER AGAIN. HOW MANY LIVES WILL BE LOST OR CHANGED FOR THE WORST BEFORE HONDA IS FORCED TO RECKON WITH THIS ISSUE? THIS IS WRONG AND UNACCEPTABLE. THERE ARE OTHER POOR DESIGN FLAWS THAT WE THINK ALSO MAY HAVE COST US SO MUCH MORE MONEY, SUCH AS THE VVT ISSUES. HOWEVER, THE VSA REPAIR ISSUE IS NOT SOMETHING THAT CAN BE OVERLOOKED AND MUST BE DEALT WITH NOW. SPECIFICALLY, MY EXPERIENCE MOSTLY ON FLAT SURFACES WITH EXCEPTION OF ONE TIME ON A SLIGHT INCLINE AT A STOP LIGHT. BOTH IN TOWN DRIVING AND INTERSATE AND ALL DRY WEATHER CONDITIONS EXCEPT ONE OCCASION. THE VSA LIGHT FLASHED, VEHICLE APPLIED BRAKE AT WITHOUT MY FOOT ON BRAKE PEDAL. MY FOOT WAS ON ACCELERATOR AT THE TIME VEHICLE WAS BEING HARSHLY STOPPED BY THE BRAKES APPLIED. THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO MAKE A BUCKING MOTION OR JERKING MOTION, ALSO I'VE EXPERIENCED THE SLIGHT SWERVE. I WAS DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT DIRECTION ALL OF THE TIMES THIS OCCURRED SINCE THE REPAIR IN 2013. IT DEPENDED ON THE AMOUNT OF PRESSURE AND LENGTH OF TIME THE VEHICLE ACTED UP. EVERYTHING IS JUST AS IT DID PRIOR TO THE REPAIR IN 2013, NOTHING IS ANY DIFFERENT, ALL THE SAME. YET, HONDA WANTS TO SAY I NEED TO COVER REPAIR.

THE YAW RATE LATERAL ACCELERATION SENSOR IS FAULTY AND SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN HONDA'S 2013 RECALL OF THE VSA. THE VEHICLE HAS THE EXACT SYMPTOMS OF THE VSA RECALL, WHICH WAS FIXED ON MY VEHICLE. I PURCHASED THE CAR LAST YEAR WITH VERY LOW MILES, ONLY DROVE FOR A FEW MONTHS BEFORE IT STARTED HAVING ISSUES. STARTED OUT HAVING THE VSA TRIANGLE LIGHT ON DASH AND LOSING POWER (LIMP MODE) ONLY AFTER COMING OUT OF A TURN AFTER DRIVING VEHICLE FOR AWHILE. INCREASED TO THE POINT WHERE AFTER ROUGHLY 30 MINUTES OF THE VEHICLE RUNNING THE VSA ISSUE WOULD HAPPEN AT LEAST ONCE DURING THE DRIVE. SEVERITY OF THE VSA/LIMP MODE GOT WORSE, NO POWER FOR LONGER AT A TIME AND THE HORRIBLE GRINDING NOISE DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH CABIN. TOOK TO HONDA COMPLAINING OF THESE ISSUES, COULDN'T REPLICATE IT SO NOTHING WAS WRONG. ONE MONTH AGO, MY VEHICLE STARTED HAVING THE UN-COMMANDED BRAKING PROBLEM. DRIVING AT 55 MPH, THE SLIGHTEST TOUCH TO THE BRAKES CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO HARD BRAKE, CAUSING A SWERVE AT LEAST GOING THAT FAST. IT HAS DONE THIS UN-COMMANDED BRAKING MORE THAN ONCE, I HAVE BEEN AFRAID TO DRIVE IT AND AT LEAST GOT IT 30 MINUTES TO MY HONDA DEALER, WHICH I ALSO PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM. IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH THE FAULTY YAW RATE LATERAL ACCELERATION SENSOR. I HAVE ARGUED WITH HONDA FOR THE LAST THREE WEEKS OVER THE ISSUE, ULTIMATELY TO BE TOLD THAT IT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE FINAL RECALL, EVEN THOUGH THE INVESTIGATION NAMES THE YAW SENSOR AS POSSIBLY BEING IMPLICATED IN THE MALFUNCTION. $994 FOR THE SENSOR ALONE. IT IS ABSOLUTELY DANGEROUS AND EVEN THE DEALER RECOMMENDS IT BE FIXED IMMEDIATELY, YET HONDA HAS DECLARED NO FAULT.

LOOKING ONLINE IT SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH THE 2005 HONDA PILOT. I SEARCHED AND CALLED HONDA AND MY LOCAL DEALER. THEY SAID THERE WEREN'T ANY RECALLS OR SAFETY BULLETINS.

THE VSA LIGHT REMAINS ILLUMINATED AND IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. 13V092 IS THE RECALL BULLITEN I BELIEVE APPLIES TO MY VEHICLE, BUT WHEN I SEARCH MY VIN, IT SHOWS NO UNREPAIRED RECALLS. I HAVE VERIFIED THAT THE VSA SUBHARNESS HAS NOT BEEN INSTALLED PRIOR TO MY PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE. MY MANUFACTURE DATE FALLS BETWEEN THE TIMELINE OF THIS RECALL AND ALSO MY VIN BEGINS WITH 2HK, WHICH IS SPECIFIED IN CAMPAIGN 13-026 AS REQUIRING VSA SUB HARNESS INSTALLED. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO MY LOCAL HONDA DEALER AND THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT IT DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL BECAUSE IT IS "VIN SPECIFIC".

2005 HONDA PILOT WITH 145K MILES SUDDENLY STARTED TO APPLY BRAKES WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING ON STRAIGHT, FLAT, DRY ROADS AT MODERATE SPEEDS. IF HAS ALSO OCCURRED AT HIGHWAY SPEED, BUT NEVER ASSOCIATED WITH SKIDDING, SLIDING, ETC. THE BRAKES APPEAR TO APPLY DIFFERENTIALLY, CAUSING A SWERVE THAT NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED QUICKLY TO AVOID COLLISION WITH TRAFFIC. THE VSA LIGHT COMES ON, AND THE TRIANGULAR VSA DISCONNECT LIGHT COMES ON. THEY BOTH GO OUT AFTER THE CAR IS SHUT OFF AND RESTARTED. THE LOCAL HONDA DEALER SAYS THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS, BUT THAT THEY HAD REPROGRAMMED THE CAR'S VSA DURING AN EARLIER SERVICE VISIT.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, MY 2005 PILOT MODEL EXL HAS 90,000 MILES. RECENTLY THE VSA LIGHT STARTED TO COME ON RANDOMLY WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE CAR. WHENEVER THAT HAPPENED THERE WOULD ALSO BE A LOUD 'CHUNK' NOISE THAT ACCOMPANIED IT AND FOR A FRACTION OF A SECOND THE BRAKES AND STEERING WHEEL WOULD LOCK UP. HOWEVER TODAY WHEN IT HAPPENED, I COULD NOT TURN OFF THE VSA FUNCTION AND THE WORST PART WAS THAT THE MALFUNCTION OF THE VSA HAD LOCKED THE BRAKES ONCE WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE ROAD. DUE TO THE MALFUNCTION I LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR FOR A FEW SECONDS AND ALTHOUGH THIS ONLY OCCURRED ONE TIME, IT WAS AN EXTREMELY FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE.

THE VSA AND/OR ABS WILL UNEXPECTEDLY APPLY THE BRAKES WHILE DRIVING. IT IS A SHORT AND QUICK APPLICATION OF THE BRAKES, HARD ENOUGH TO MAKE THE VEHICLE SWERVE. IT THEN SEEMS TO RELEASE AND YOU CAN CONTINUE DRIVING. ONCE THIS OCCURS BOTH THE VSA AND ABS LIGHTS ON THE DASH TURN ON SHOWING THEY ARE DISABLED. THE BRAKES CONTINUE TO BE OPERATIONAL. UPON TURNING OFF THE IGNITION THE LIGHTS RESET AND THE VSA/ABS SEEM TO BE OPERATIONAL. MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING OUR FAMILY'S 2005 HONDA PILOT. SHE APPLIED THE BRAKE LIGHTLY WHICH RESULTED IN EXCESSIVE BREAKING IN THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL AND THEN APPEARANCE OF THE VSA LIGHT. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE HONDA DEALER WHO FIRST INDICATED THERE WAS NO RECALL AND THEN INDICATED THERE WAS A VSA WIRE HARNESS RECALL (NHTSA 13V-092) BUT THAT IT DID APPLY THE VSA LIGHT GOING ON AND THEREFORE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE RECALL. A VSA LIGHT DIAGNOSTICS WHICH I INDEPENDENTLY PAID FOR INDICATED A YAW RATE FAILURE CODE (25-01). THIS LIGHT VSA LIGHT HAS CONTINUED TO INTERMITTENTLY GO ON AND OFF WITH AN INTERMITTENT CONTEMPORANEOUS RELATIONSHIP TO BRAKING. ON 2/25/15 MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY (NO VSA LIGHT ON), APPLIED THE BRAKES LIGHTLY AND THE CAR BRAKED SEVERLY EVEN ONCE HER FOOT WAS OFF THE BRAKE AND PULLED THE CAR IN THE SAME FRONT RIGHT DIRECTION AS BEFORE FORCING HER TO SWERVE ALONG SIDE A PASSING TRUCK. THE VSA LIGHT WENT ON AFTER THE EVENT OCCURRED. CALLING THE HONDA DEALER TODAY, THE SERVICE MANAGER INDICATED THAT HONDA DOES NOT HAVE A RECALL ON THIS MATTER ONCE THE PART FOR THE 13V-092 RECALL WAS REPLACED. IN REVIEWING SAFER CAR.GOV NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER DP12002 IT DESCRIBES WELL WHAT HAS OCCURRED TWICE AND WHICH HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED BY THE RECALL SERVICE PERFORMED. I HAVE ALSO CONTACTED HONDA USA. I BELIEVE HONDA HAS INADEQUATELY EVALUATED THE RELATIONSHIP OF SIMILARLY REPORTED EVENTS REGARDING UNEXPECTED CAR BRAKE ASSIST WITH MILD APPLICATION OF THE BRAKE SINCE THE VSA WIRE HARNESS RECALL REPAIR DID NOT RESOLVE THE UNEXPECTED AND INAPPROPRIATE VSA/ESC/BA SYSTEM LOGIC RESPONSE. THE BRAKES SUDDENLY APPLIED WHILE CRUISING ALONG THE INTERSTATE AT 75MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE DIRECTED OFF THE ROAD THEN THE BRAKES LOCKED UP AND VEHICLE WOULD NOT GO FORWARD. LONG STORY BUT I BELIEVE IT IS ALL RELATED. BASED ON MY UNDERSTANDING THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM AND VSA ARE ALL PART OF THE SAME SYSTEM IN A 2005 HONDA PILOT. WE WERE HAVING A "NOISE" THAT WAS BELIEVED TO BE CAUSED BY A RANDOM ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM SELF CHECK. THIS WOULD HAPPEN AT ANY SPEED AND APPEARED TO BE ACTIVATED BY ANY SMALL BUMP IN THE ROAD. THIS WAS MORE OF A NUISANCE THAN ANYTHING BUT WE THOUGHT WE WOULD HAVE THE DEALERSHIP LOOK INTO IT. MORE ON THIS LATER. IN ADDITION WE ALSO HAD THE VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST (VSA) ENGAGE ONCE AND THE RESULTS WERE A LITTLE SCARY OR VIOLENT AT BEST. THE PROBLEM OCCURRED WHEN TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH UNDER WINDY CONDITIONS. THE VSA SYSTEM ENGAGED, THE BRAKES WERE HEAVILY APPLIED, AND THE VEHICLE WAS PUT INTO A CONTROL MODE THAT PULLED THE VEHICLE LEFT AND RIGHT. WE HAD VERY LIMITED CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHEN ALL OF THIS WAS HAPPENING. WE WERE ABLE TO PULL THE VEHICLE OVER WITHOUT INCIDENT AND DEACTIVATE THE VSA TO FINISH OUR TRIP. WHAT OUR DEALERSHIP FOUND WAS A CRACKED ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR ON THE MAIN ENGINE WIRING HARNESS WHERE IT CONNECTS TO THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE AND VSA MODULE. THE CONNECTOR IS LOCATED UNDER THE ENGINE SHROUD IN AN AREA THAT ISN'T ACCESSIBLE DURING NORMAL OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND WE HAVE NEVER HAD ANY SERVICE DONE ON ANYTHING IN THIS AREA. OUR GUESS IS THAT IT WAS CRACKED DURING THE ORIGINAL INSTALLATION OR IT FATIGUED OVER TIME. THE HONDA TECHNICIAN THOUGHT THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WAS MOISTURE ENTERING THE CONTROL MODULE VIA THE DAMAGED CONNECTOR. THIS IN TURN CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD THAT CONTROLS THE BRAKING AND VSA SYSTEM. WE STOPPED INVESTIGATING THE REPAIR AT THIS POINT BECAUSE OF COST. THE FIRST COUPLE TIMES IT HAPPENED THERE WERE NO LIGHTS ON MY DASH BUT THEN THE VSA LIGHT CAME ON. IT WENT OFF AGAIN AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON. I HAD MY BRAKES, PADS, AND ROTORS CHANGED AND THE BRAKE LINES FLUSHED. SINCE THEN NO LIGHTS HAVE BEEN ON. THEN YESTERDAY, VERY SUDDENLY, THE CAR BEGAN SLAMMING ON THE BRAKES. WHILE DRIVING A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY FROM MY HOME THE CAR'S BRAKES LOCKED UP ON THEIR OWN. I WAS DRIVING UNDER SLIGHTLY WET CONDITIONS AT A FAIRLY LOW SPEED (APPROX. 25 - 30 MPH) AND THE CAR SEEMED, MOMENTARILY, AS IF THE LEFT FRONT TIRE HAD GONE FLAT AND AN INDICATOR LIGHT WITH A TRIANGLE AND AN EXCLAMATION POINT AND THE VSA LIGHT SIMULTANEOUSLY CAME ON. I PULLED OVER, CHECKED THE TIRE, TURNED THE CAR OFF, RESTARTED IT AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE FOR THE REST OF THAT DAY. THE NEXT MORNING, I EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING AFTER THE CAR HAD SAT ALL NIGHT. AFTER TURNING IT OFF AND BACK ON, THE INDICATOR AND VSA LIGHTS WERE OUT, BUT THEN CAME BACK ON LESS THAN 30 MINUTES LATER WHILE IDLING. THE WEATHER CONDITIONS THIS DAY WERE COLD, BUT DRY. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT AND TOOK THE CAR TO LEITH HONDA. I EXPERIENCED THE SAME CONDITION WHILE DRIVING IT TO THE DEALER. THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF A PROBLEM AND THE CAR'S COMPUTER DIDN'T INDICATE THAT THE VSA HAD EVEN BEEN ON. I PICKED THE CAR UP THAT NIGHT, AFTER THEY HAD CLOSED, AND EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM LESS THAN 15 MINUTES AFTER I LEFT THE DEALER. I THEN EXPERIENCED IT AGAIN THE NEXT DAY, AFTER A COLD START, AND THEN AGAIN TODAY, ALSO AFTER A COLD START, BUT THIS TIME WHILE IDLING. I HAD BEEN DRIVING THE CAR FOR NEARLY AN HOUR. I CAME TOWARD A STOPLIGHT, PUT THE BRAKES ON, WHICH SEEMED TO FUNCTION FINE. THEN WHEN I WENT TO ACCELERATE THE CAR JARRED TO A SHAKY STOP- ALMOST LIKE THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES WERE WORKING. I TOOK IT HOME, STOPPED THE CARE FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THEN DECIDED TO TAKE IT BACK OUT TO SEE IF IT WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. I DROVE IT FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES AND CAME TO A STOP SIGN. I CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND THEN WHEN I WENT TO TURN I ACCELERATED BRIEFLY AND THEN THE CAR CAME TO A STOP- LIKE SOMEONE HAD STEPPED ON THE BRAKES BUT I DID NOT STEP ON THEM. THE CAR NEVER STOPPED RUNNING OR NEVER STALLED, I JUST HAD NO ACCELERATION FOR A MOMENT. I THEN DROVE THE CAR IMMEDIATELY TO MY MECHANIC DOWN THE STREET FROM MY HOUSE. ONE OF THE MECHANICS DROVE THE CAR WITH ME IN IT FOR SEVERAL MINUTES AND COULD NOT GET THE PROBLEM TO HAPPEN. HE DROPPED ME OFF AT MY HOUSE AND WHEN HE WAS ACCELERATING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY I SAW THE CAR COME TO A COMPLETE STOP BUT NO BRAKE LIGHTS WENT ON AT THE BACK OF THE CAR. HE WAS ABLE TO BACK INTO MY DRIVEWAY- THE CAR NEVER SHUT OFF AND STILL FUNCTIONED- AND HE ASKED ME IF THAT WAS THE ISSUE AND I SAID YES. AFTER HAVING IT HAPPEN YET AGAIN, AND AFTER DETAILING HOW THIS PROBLEM NEARLY TOOK MY LIFE, HONDA AGREED TO TAKE THE CAR AND THE SERVICE REP. WOULD DRIVE IT. I WAS FORTUNATE AND IT HAPPENED TO HIM VERY QUICKLY. UNDER WARRANTY, 1/25/07, A ABS/TCS/VSA MODULATOR WAS REPLACED. WHEN GOING APPROXIMATELY 35-45 MPH ON STRAIGHT DRY ROADS THE BRAKES WILL SUDDENLY APPLY THEMSELVES WITH NO PRESSING OF THE BRAKE PEDAL! LUCKILY IT HAS LASTED ONLY A SECOND AND THEY ARE SUDDENLY RELEASED, BUT IT IS VERY FRIGHTENING AND IF I WERE NOT LOOKING STRAIGHT AHEAD AND HOLDING TIGHT TO THE WHEEL THE CAR EASILY COULD HAVE PULLED OFF THE ROAD (IT SEEMS TO BE PREDOMINANTLY THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE BRAKE - I THINK THE LEFT SIDE ONLY DID IT ONCE.) I WAS DRIVING THE 2005 HONDA PILOT ABOUT 20 TO 30 MPH . THE TIME WAS ABOUT 7:15 AM. THE ROADS WERE WET AFTER SOME MISTING LIGHT RAIN. I HEARD A RELATIVELY LOUD NOISE THAT STARTLED ME. THE NOISE LASTED FOR PERHAPS 2 SECONDS. IT SOUNDED AS IF THE BRAKES WERE INADVERTENTLY BEING APPLIED AND GRABBING OR PERHAPS SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION OR REAR END. I DO NOT REMEMBER THAT THE BRAKES WERE BEING APPLIED AT THE TIME, BUT IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THEY WERE. I KEPT DRIVING AND WAS THEN MUCH MORE ATTENTIVE TO THERE POSSIBLY BEING SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. ABOUT ONE MINUTE LATER I HEARD AN ALMOST IDENTICAL LOUD SOUND. I DO REMEMBER THAT I WAS BRAKING AT THE TIME, BUT DUE TO BEING STARTLE, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT I MAY NOT REMEMBER SUCH. THE VEHICLE MAY HAVE DECELERATED, BUT TO THE BEST OF MY RECOLLECTION, I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE VEHICLE DECELERATION WAS SEVERE. I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL HONDA DEALER. I WAS TOLD THAT THE MECHANIC TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND COULD NOT REPEAT THE PROBLEM AND THAT HE COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THEN THE SERVICE MANAGER TALKED TO ME ABOUT WHAT POSSIBLE MIGHT HAVE CAUSED THE LOUD NOISE AND HE TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE WITH ME INSIDE. HE DIRECTED THE VEHICLE WITH THE LEFT WHEELS ON THE PAVEMENT AND THE RIGHT WHEELS ON THE GRASS. THEN HE RAPIDLY APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE VEHICLE MADE A LOUD NOISE AND TO MY MEMORY THE NOISE SOUNDED LIKE THE NOISES I HAD ENCOUNTERED PREVIOUSLY. HE SAID THAT THIS NOISE WAS FROM THE ABS SYSTEM ENGAGING. DRIVING AT AROUND 45-50 MPH ON A BUSY HIGHWAY IN THE MORNING RUSH HOUR, AS I PRESSED MY BRAKE SUDDENLY TO AVOID ANOTHER VEHICLE COMING ON TO MY LANE, I LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR. WHILE DRIVING THE BRAKING SYSTEM SUDDENLY STARTED TO ACTIVATE THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM, VIOLENTLY APPLYING THE BRAKES REGARDLESS OF HOW HARD OR SOFTLY I TOUCHED THE BRAKE PEDAL. THIS PROBLEM BEGAN EARLIER IN 2012 AND WAS INVESTIGATED BY THE DEALER IN JUNE. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS (45-75MPH), THE VSA SYSTEM ENGAGES, LOCKING ONE WHEEL FOR A SECOND OR TWO, AND PULLING THE STEERING WHEEL AS IF IN A SKID. WHEN THIS STOPS, THE VSA LIGHT IS ON AS WELL AS A YELLOW TRIANGLE WITH AN EXCLAMATION POINT. WHEN THE DEALER 'FIXED' THIS IN JUNE, THEY REPAIRED A TPMS SENSOR. THEY ALSO FOUND A BRAKE CALIPER STUCK AND FIXED THAT AS WELL AS REPLACED THE BRAKE PADS. SINCE JUNE THE ISSUE HAS NOT OCCURRED UNTIL YESTERDAY. IT HAS HAPPENED AT 3 TIMES IN THE PAST 2 DAYS, ALL AT @ 45 MPH. THIS SEEMS TO BE A WIDELY REPORTED ISSUE AND IS CERTAINLY A SAFETY CONCERN. WHILE I WAS DRIVING APPROX 40 MPH MY 2005 HONDA PILOT'S BRAKES ENGAGED ON THEIR OWN. THE BRAKES STUCK TO THE FLOOR AND THE CAR JETTED TO THE LEFT INTO THE MEDIAN WHILE STOPPING. DURING THE EVENT THERE WAS A LOUD GROANING NOISE THAT WAS COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. I MADE MY WAY INTO A GAS STATION AND TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE. I RESTARTED THE CAR AND PROCEEDED HOME WHEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN 1/2 MILE LATER AT 30 MPH, BRAKES TO THE FLOOR,LOUD GROANING SOUND. AT THIS POINT I WAS TERRIFIED AS MY 3YR DAUGHTER WAS IN THE CAR AND WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF RUSH HOUR. THE VSA LIGHT POPPED ON AFTER THE SECOND EVENT.CAR WAS IMMEDIATELY TAKEN TO THE SHOP WHERE WE WERE TOLD BY THE TECHNICIAN WHO INSPECTED AND DROVE THE VEHICLE THAT HE WAS ABLE TO REPLICATE THE EVENT 2X. THEY STATED WE HAD A PROBLEM W/THE VSA OR ABS SYSTEM AND WE HAD TO TAKE IT TO THE HONDA DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN ALSO NOTED THAT WHEN THEY HOOKED THE CAR UP TO THE COMPUTER THERE WAS A TIME WHEN THE ABS SYSTEM WAS READING "NO DATA".THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO HONDA THE NEXT DAY AND WE WERE TOLD WE DID NOT HAVE A PROBLEM W/OUR ABS OR VSA SYSTEM. THEY WERE ALSO UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. HONDA CONCLUDED THAT MY BRAKE PADS/ROTORS & TIRES NEEDED REPLACED. THE ORIGINAL SHOP WE TOOK IT TO STATED OUR BRAKES AND TIRES WERE FINE AND WOULD NOT CONTRIBUTE TO THE PROBLEM WE WERE HAVING. WE TRUSTEDHONDA AND COMPLETED THE REPAIRS THEY REQUESTED OUTSIDE OF THE DEALERSHIP. NEW BRAKES & TIRES ON THE VEHICLE AND WE HAVE HAD 4 ADD.'L INCIDENTS SINCE THESE ?REPAIRS? HAVE BEEN MADE. ALL OF THE INFO WE RECEIVED FROM THE FIRST SHOP THAT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE WAS RELAYED TO HONDA NUMEROUS TIMES AND THEY WERE ADAMANT THAT WE DID NOT HAVE A VSA OR ABS PROBLEM. CLEARLY THEY WERE WRONG. WE ARE TAKING IT BACK TO THE DEALER NEXT TUESDAY .THE VEHICLE REMAINS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND WE ARE VERY DISPLEASED AT HOW HONDA IS HANDLING THE SITUATION.

MY 2005 HONDA PILOT BRAKES HAVE AUTOMATICALLY SEIZED UP A TOTAL OF 5 TIMES IN THE LAST YEAR BUT 4 TIMES IN THE LAST 3 WEEKS (MAY 2012). ALL 4 TIMES IT HAS HAPPENED HAVE BEEN AT LOW SPEEDS (10-20 MPH, THANKFULLY!!!) AND WITHIN 5 MINUTES OF STARTING UP AFTER IT HAS SAT FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. I HAVE TAKEN IT INTO THE HONDA DEALER TWICE IN THE PAST THREE WEEKS (MAY 2012) THE DAY AFTER IT OCCURRED AND BOTH TIMES THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE OR FIND A PROBLEM. THE FIRST THREE TIMES THE VSA LIGHT CAME ON BUT NO CODE TRIPPED IN THE COMPUTER SYSTEM. THE LAST TWO TIMES IT HAPPENED NO DASHBOARD INDICATION OCCURRED. IT OCCURRED 3 WEEKS AGO, 1 WEEK AGO AND YESTERDAY BACK TO BACK SO THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE INTENSIFYING. SO FAR, FOR A TEMPORARY FIX, I HAVE TURNED OFF THE CAR AND RESTARTED IT AND THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO STOP FOR A WHILE. AS MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY, YESTERDAY THE BRAKES SEIZED UP AS I WAS DRIVING BUT NO DASH INDICATION CAME ON. BECAUSE I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION, ONCE THE BRAKES RELEASED, I A DECIDED TO DRIVE FORWARD TO TRY AND GET IT OUT OF THE INTERSECTION ONLY TO HAVE THEM SEIZE UP AGAIN ABOUT 100 METERS LATER.
