Needed a steering rack. Needed a new transmission due to a torque converter failure. Now AWD is intermittently faulty needing fuel injectors. All within 1 year

Vehicle surges occasionally at 30 to 45 MPH. Had a loud engine knock when driving on interstate and vehicle slowed down and multiple warning lighted up on dash like a Christmas tree. Was able to get to the shoulder safely. Restarted the vehicle, warning lights gone and was able to drive home. OBD II scanner read P0369. Took it to dealer for inspection, they confirmed camshaft “walk” and damaged the camshaft position sensor. After the repair, the surging issue still occurs occasionally.

Oct 18, 2025

Rear differential unit failed at about 66,000 miles without warning. During normal driving, the dashboard warning light came on indicating AWD warning. It was raining at the time the warning came on. The Pilot onboard computer did disable the AWD and place the vehicle in front wheel drive only mode. The next morning again the AWD warning came on when put into drive and was raining again. Driving again in the afternoon the AWD warning did not come on and there was no rain. I could not see any physical signs of an issue. The Pilot was just in for two recalls: one for backup camera wiring harness on 8/27/2025 and fuel pump on 9/8/2025. About two weeks later on 9/24/2025 was when the first warning came on. The Pilot was taken to the dealer and was reported that the differential pump, sub harness, and differential all needed to be replaced. I informed the dealer that the two recalls were performed and the warning coming on during wet weather. The dealer stated the failure was not caused by the recalls. In order to make to Pilot safe to drive again, I had the dealer replace the parts.

My car "lurches" when increasing speed sometimes acting like it does not want to go at all. I am constantly on edge that I am going to get rear ended or hit. Especially when my children are with me. Occasionally the brake light will light up and my car will slow down and then accelerate again. Which also makes me worry about getting hit. Both of these things have happened multiple times and we've done our research. It's a major issue

My 2019 Honda Pilot was surging when it went up a hill or was at a steady speed on the highway. I was concerned that the car would stall. The dealer confirmed/reproduced the problem and called it a torque converter shudder. Per Honda's instructions they changed the transmission fluid 3 times and did a software update. There were no warning lights. This is a known problem with a very specific fix that is recommended by Honda. It should be a recall and the repair covered by Honda. It costs me over $400.00 to get the repair done at my dealer-Washington PA Honda.

2019 Honda Touring: driving down the highway the windshield would crackle ( Electricity) then we started experiencing transmission delays in shifting and the transmission sounded rough and it was delayed. when the car was put in park the whole dashboard lit up with emissions system problem, Stop driving when safe. transmission problem, Blind spot info system problem. after this showed up the car was not able to move at all. it would not move to gear. the problem was not reproduced at the Honda dealer. They recommend replacing the transmission. I had it towed to another shop where they tell me all codes that pertain this the initial issues stated and refer back to dealer to reset the tmc system failure and to reset the electrical system. Honda refuses to do work as they want to replace the entire transmission

Sep 4, 2025

As the vehicle is stopped in traffic and is about the proceed, the vehicle automatically shifts into park and the emission warning light comes on. The vehicle is unable to be put back into drive unless the vehicle is turned off and then restarted creating a dangerous condition while you are stuck in middle of the roadway.

This vehicle continues to have issues related to a problem that was issued for the fuel pump earlier this year. My fuel pump was replaced, but the vehicle continues to do the same thing. It stalls and jerks while I am driving and does not start sometimes after getting gas. When I am trying to accelerate the vehicle does not go at full power. One time I was going out into traffic and had to reverse because I knew that I would not make it and get hit. In addition to this, the vehicle has an issue with the braking system. Other years have been recalled for what they call ghost breaking, and although this one does this, it has not been recalled. I will be driving and the car will all of a sudden just brake on its own as if there is a vehicle/object in front of me. Sometimes this happens in the same location. Honda is supposed to be a reliable car, but it seems they have failed with this year/model of the Pilot because it has been big issue after big issue.

Aug 22, 2025

DRIVING IN THE WOODLANDS AND AT A STOP SIGN WHEN THE AUTO-STOP FEATURE ACTIVATED AND WHEN LIGHT CHANGED TO GREEN THE CAR WOULD NOT AUTOMATICALLY RESTART, I HAD TO PHYSICALLY RESTART THE VEHICLE BY PUSHING THE START BUTTON WITH THE BRAKE ENGAGED. VERY ANNOYING! AND A BIG SAFETY ISSUE.

Aug 8, 2025

While driving on Highway 35 in Olathe traffic came to a crawl and vehicle automatic idle caused vehicle to stop. Luckily vehicles were slow and was not hit in the rear. Had to place vehicle in Park and restart. Several other times while at stop light vehicle just shuts down and fails to restart. We are just manually turning off auto idle on every start. If we forget the vehicle will start to shut down and we quickly turn off. Safety concerns while having grandkids in vehicle so we usually just take the 2014 Honda Odyssey which does not have this feature. ON going problem.

Aug 3, 2025

The transmission surges while accelerating and cruising. Honda issued a service bulletin, 17-014 issued 2/27/2018, to fix the problem for the 2016-2017 models. Mine is a 2019 with the same transmission as the 2016-17 Pilot, the 6AT. The solution to the issue was the same as the 2016-17 Pilot, flushing the transmission fluid three times but now Honda will not issue a service bulletin for the same problem on the the 2019 model so I had to pay for it.

Aug 1, 2025

Ticking noise and check engine light. Taken to dealer. Dealer replaced tensioner, timing belt, water pump, did oil change and engine flush. Did not fix the problem. Dealer took the engine apart and discovered damaged rocker arm assembly which caused valve spring break which caused a problem with the cylinder. Honda is denying a warranty claim as the vehicle is just outside of the 5 year power train warranty period even though it only has 48 thousand mile on it and has been serviced regularly and kept in good condition.

The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that he had stopped the vehicle and had depressed the brake pedal. The contact stated that he opened the driver's side door and as he stepped out with his left leg, the vehicle started to move forward, and the engine was still running. The contact stated that the vehicle had a safety feature that automatically placed the vehicle into park (P) when the driver depressed the brake pedal and opened the driver's side door. The contact stated that as he exited the vehicle, it started to roll; he had parked on a slope with the hood of the vehicle aimed downhill. The contact stated that the driver's side rear tire ran over both his legs below his knees. The vehicle rolled downhill into a ravine and was not damaged. The contact stated that he called the police, who arrived and asked if he needed medical attention. The contact stated that no report was issued. The contact declined and later drove himself to a hospital emergency room. The contact stated that he was x-rayed and examined and only had abrasions and bruises. The contact drove the vehicle to a local dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined it had low battery power and had contacted the manufacturer for further guidance. The contact stated that the vehicle had a 9-speed automatic transmission that used a push button. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 71,000.

Transmission shift from 2nd to 3rd gear is extremely violent and inconsistent. This is not a normal "transmission slip" but rather a miscalculation of how much RPM to input post shift. This causes the car to "jump" or slow drastically while driving through city. Typically felt between 25 and 35 mph. When I took car in for diagnostic, the dealership said "oh, that's just how these cars a made. I hear about this many times with now problems." There are no engine lights on as a result of the shifting, but the reported concern has been present on car since first owner.

Jul 9, 2025 Crash

I have recently had a traumatizing event with respect to the 2019 Honda Pilot. As you know this vehicle has the 3.5L v6 engine and transmission. Recently I was in a situation where I needed to accelerate to miss an oncoming tractor trailer that crossed the median. The only course of action was to accelerate. At the time of acceleration the car skipped and slipped gear. We narrowly missed colliding and in my estimates dying. I had the vehicle inspected and diagnosed by a Honda dealership in Sanford NC. They determined the Torque Converter failed and is bad. They also informed me this same power train is in the 2018 and previous Honda Pilots. Which Honda extended the warranty on to address the issue. Why haven’t they included the 2019? This is unacceptable I have reached out to Honda and they will not discuss the issue.

dash instuments goes blacked out , entertainment system goes black in sequence to dash, this has happened multiple times . I cannot tell my speed, gas levels, etc, the LKAS, collision warning, adaptive cruise control , auto emergncy breaking ,lane departure warning failed with lights coming on with various failure warinings, it fails ,then works randomly then fails again. I have taken my vehichle in starting in 2022 for the dash instruments and entertainment going out .The transmission has rough shifting multiple times, i have brought for diagnostic service 4 times on transmission, they cannot find the causes. I have had transmissions serviced and flushed as required.

As soon as my car hit 58,000 miles all of a sudden my transmission is doing a jerking like if it’s trying to fail, which doesn’t make sense because I’ve never heard of transmissions going on a car so young with very few mileage and then I realized, and I looked it up that pilot from 2018 2017 and 2019 are known to have transmission issues. Why didn’t Honda fix this issue already?

Apr 1, 2025

Hello, I have owned my 2019 Pilot for almost 6 years. From day one, I have had ongoing issues including over 12 situations in which my vehicle would not restart at stoplights, 4-way stops or other areas (my driveway, gas station etc.). I have had the vehicle jump started multiple times by my extended warranty company, my husband and neighbor and towed to the dealer. My most recent stall when not even let me turn on my hazards as my vehicle completely died at the stoplight. I have called 911 multiple times to protect me from being rear-ended. I fear for my life driving the vehicle. My kids refuse to also drive the vehicle. Honda does not have any answers for the fix. There are over 1,000 complaints from vehicle owners. Let's do something before someone is rear-ended and killed! Look at my service history! My car is a lemon, and has lost value. I deserve peace of mind driving this vehicle and compensation for this never ending nightmare.

Mar 10, 2025

The Pilot has exhibited unusual behavior that seems tied to the autostop functionality when at a stop light. Three times now I will let my foot off the brake and the car completely shuts down. When I try to restart the vehicle, the accessory power turns on but the vehicle will not start. It will start to turn over, but the turn over terminates abruptly and the car completely shuts off. The behavior seems similar to what is in the NHTSA Action Number PE22005

No power it feels like it’s stock

Feb 21, 2025

At random times, but seemingly becoming a more frequent occurence, when the stop/start system engages & shuts the vehicle down at idle (at a stop light for example), the vehicle will not restart for a period of time afterwards. This has also happened on the highway multiple times in traffic in which the vehicle will not start for a short period of time. This is a big safety issue and I was almost rear-ended a couple of times in those highway cases. When the problem happens, the lighting on the meter (indicator lights) will randomly flash & the clicking sound from the blinker will continuously go on/off during the timeframe of when the vehicle will not restart. I've raised this concern to Honda multiple times with no support coming back from them since they can't re-create the issue.

On [XXX] we were driving on [XXX] in Nashville and experiencing a sudden loss of power and the check engine light started flashing. Thankfully we were able to exit the interstate without incident and there was a mechanic shop near the exit. He found brass flakes in the oil filter and told us that it was likely a bearing failure. We then had the vehicle towed back to the Honda dealership in Louisville KY where we purchased it new. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Dec 26, 2024

I was coming to a stop at a red light and the car shut off . It flashed a transmission issue and emissions issue on the dash. I tried to restart and it would start but not move or let me shift into gear leaving me stranded in the middle of a busy road. It took for an officer to remove my battery cable and then reconnect for me to be able to move the vehicle out of the road and into a parking lot. I had the car towed to the nearest Honda dealership where they saw the messages on the dash. While they test drove it all errors went away and they can’t locate an issue.

Unknown….vehicle slips at certain speeds and repeatedly does so on a trip. If the engine is turned off, this may reset and slippage goes away temporarily. This issue has been brought to the dealers attention on multiple occasions over the past 2 years, but they have been unable to reproduce except on the most recent visit. Occurrence is more frequent now. Wondering why this vehicle is not included with the recall with similar make and model for the same year for torque converter?

Dec 18, 2024

acceleration hesitation. Car seems to hesitate when accelerating for a few seconds and then all the sudden will accelerate quickly.

Dec 5, 2024

When exiting a highway, my Pilot started to shake and jump. When I pulled to safety, the vehicle was reluctant to shift into park and kept cycling back in to drive. After multiple attempts, it finally stayed in park. Dealership reported the transmission software needed to be updated. I was told this is not covered under my warranty or under a recall as this is not a common problem. After doing more research this does appear to be a common safety problem.

Honda Pilot has a known issue covered by American Honda TSB Technical Service Bulletin of "Judder" from the transmission. This issue is identified by a extreme and unsafe surging of the powertrain/transmission at all speeds and in all driving conditions. The event happened to us with this vehicle and makes for unsafe operation as the "Judder" presents as a lack of acceleration or lack of control. In heavy or light traffic this is not a desirable attribute of a vehicle to have sudden acceleration or deceleration without input from the driver. It is as if the vehicle has a mind of its own. This is covered by numerous Technical Service Bulletins and identified by our local Honda Dealer as TSB/Judder. The correct fix is a Triple Flush of the Transmission and Reprograming of the Transmission with more frequent transmission flushes than are recommended by the owners manual. NOT ALL VIN numbers are covered by the TSB for Judder and Honda pretends that not all Honda Pilots similarly equipped are affected by this dangerous condition. Instead the Honda dealership service department representatives identify the problem, admit it is a problem and then admit they know the solution and it is a known TSB, they then pretend some VIN are not included as if they are "safe" when they know that they are not "safe". NHTSA should investigate and force American Honda to recall or TSB all VIN for this Judder issue. It is unsafe and unsettling.

Hi I am owner off 2019 Honda pilot elite model with 9speed transmission since I got delivery off my brand new Honda pilot I noticed my transmission do not shift normally it’s make stuck noice and feel like hunting for right gear ,and its shake when shift to gear I take it to dealer where I buy they check and told me it’s 9 speed transmission act like that now when my warranty expired it’s shake lot when shift

Said 2019 Honda Pilot, maintained per Honda recommended maintenance schedule, experienced engine knock and internal damage at 100k miles. Investigation by Honda Certified Maintenance (dealership) identified a misfire diagnostic code for cylinder #2, and observed visible metallic debris in the engine oil indicative of bearing failure. Honda Certified Maintenance suggested internal engine damage and recommended engine/motor replacement. This is premature failure of 2019 Honda Pilot engine, presumably "not included" in the "affected VIN" population of Honda Service Bulletin #24-001.

Aug 1, 2024

I brought my 2019 Honda Pilot to Son's Honda in McDonough, GA, for a service diagnosis as my vehicle is not mechanically running smoothly, sputtering. I called Honda dealership knowing there's a current recall for fuel pump motor it thought this might be the problem. Honda asked me if my vehicle engine light was on and after answering "no" was advised that it wasn't available for for replacement at this time due to having limited parts and servicing only vehicles with engine light on or difficulty starting. I advised my vehicle was demonstrating a lack of power, judger and was advised to bring it in for a diagnosis. Charge amount of $159.00. Upon completion of the diagnosis from Honda it was recommended to have the "Torque converter " replaced at a estimated price of $4,700.00. Upon speaking with the Honda service department manager he suggested I contacted Honda corporate as they have seen this similar issue before and they usually granted financial assistance up to 85% off the repair costs. I contacted Honda Pilot customer service and was assigned case # [XXX]. I was interviewed several times, advised that Honda will review my qualifications based on multiple factors like brand loyalty, years of ownership, service, other related associations with Honda. I advised that this is my second Honda Pilot, my first one I owned from 2007 to 2020 and my second Honda Pilot from 2020 to the present. It's important to know that besides the current recall for fuel pump motor, Honda has a current recall for 2016-2018 Honda vehicles for "Torque converter " issues or have extended warranty to 150,000 for some model vehicles up to 2019. This information comes from Brad Ortloff, manager of Auto campaigns and recalls. Subject line : Warranty Extension:2017- 2019 Multi Model 6AT Torque Converter, to all Honda Sales, Service & Parts manager's and personnel. This is clearly evidence Honda is fully aware of this defective Torque converter problem. Unfortunately, Honda denied my claim. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF IN

The Honda Pilot has a known history of "Judder and Surge" with the transmission. Which means to shake rapidly or spasmodically; vibrate conspicuously. Honda in America has a TSB/Technical Service Bulletin for this condition and that is to triple flush the transmission and reprogram the transmission computer. This is OBVIOUSLY a serious safety issue and the vehicle does not behave in a normal operating condition and surges and vibrates until service is performed. This is not normal wear and tear, this is bad engineering. Honda is aware of the TSB for Judder and Surge, but will only correctly repair certain trim levels and model years, although Honda knows that it exist in all configuration of the Pilot 2016 and forward. We have a 2019 Honda Pilot and Honda refuses to fix this vehicle as a TSB, but instead wishes to leave the vehicles on the road and have the unwitting customer pay for this serious repair condition. Honda should issue a comprehensive TSB for all Pilot years and makes for the Judder/Surge issue.

Jul 2, 2024

The vehicle occasionally has trouble starting, and the engine takes a while to take off while I'm driving and we're merging on an interstate.

Jun 17, 2024

Unknown. There is a popping and static sound coming from the speakers. Also, the check turner or radio is not available. A notification will be displayed on the screen when the vehicle hits a bump in the road, or the street is not smooth.

Mar 27, 2024

While stopped at a busy intersection the vehicle stalled and would not restart. Everything went blank. We believe it was the idle stop start feature malfunctioning. Lost all vehicle power including hazard lamps, speedometer, and gauges. Vehicle was previously in for recall on farka cables and idle stop start update. Honda dealer replaced battery 2 Months prior

Jan 7, 2024

My 2019 Honda Pilot with approximately 74K miles suddenly display a transmission problem warning. We were on a freeway, slowing down from approximately 70 MPH to 50 MPH. As the vehicle slowed, it shudder, the speed dropped and clanking noise was heard as i pressed the gass pedal to gain some forward momentum. The transmission warninig displays comes on, and the speed dropped. We limped to the nearest Hondas dealer in Carson , CA. It appears there's is an ongoing class action lawsiut by Hondas Pilots owner due to same problems that I just experienced. I am shocked for such a problem with Hondas vehicles, with low mileage. Not expected this with Hondas

Jan 2, 2024

Between gears 4 to 5 and 5 to 4 the transmission can jerk suddenly, and cause a "clapping" noise from the transmission. As a consumer, I would not expect this to be customary for a new car (it has happened since we bought the car new in Dec 2018). The dealership could not identify an issue with no MIL or thrown code. It is concerning for the life of the transmission given the aggressive shift between these gears.

Dec 27, 2023

Experiencing Judder/hesitation when car reaches a speed where it has to shift from first to second gear and from second to third gear. Sometimes it feels more like a jerk. Issue mostly occurs after the car has warmed up, so after around 3-4 miles of driving the car. Second issue was RPM fluctuation when car is at steady acceleration. Judder issue first occurred back in June 2022 when the car has ~63000 miles. It started with a sudden jerk, felt like someone hit the car from behind, this happens when the car is trying to shift from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. Issue was very intermittent at that time and restart of car would make it go away. But issue will come back every few weeks. Issue increased around ~68,762 miles, so took the car to my local auto repair shop on 8/31/2023. The shop performed maintenance listed below – •Transmission Flush / Fluid ATF DW-1 / Transmission service •Oil Change •Differential Front and Back Service/Flush •Cooling system Flush and new anti-freeze •Fuel Injection Service Issue was still ongoing, so decided to take the car to Honda Authorized service center on 9/27/23, they were able to duplicate the Judder experience and performed snapshot and diagnosed car and advised vehicle needs torque converter. Wanted to go for second opinion, so scheduled an appointment with another Honda service center, they informed me that the transmission fluid was very dark and performed the flush of automatic transmission fluid (ATF) 3 time. Issue frequency has reduced after the flush, but every few weeks the car experiences Judder/hesitation while shifting and usually turning off the engine and back on helps resolve the issue. All this while no engine lights came on.

Nov 19, 2023

2019 Honda Pilot EX-L with 52K current miles. Very jerky and rough transmission gear shifts from 1st to 2nd especially noticible on the upshift. It shakes the whole car to the point driver and passengers are startled. It does not happen all the time, but when it does occur, the car must be pulled over, the engine turned off and restarted to make the problem go away, which might indicate that it is a programming/electronic issue. If the car is not restarted, the problem persists. Started noticing this problem around the 37K miles, but got worse and more often to the point at 38K the car was taken to a Honda dealer to address the problem. The dealer suggested a transmission fluid replacement, and it was done at my cost. The problem has now returned at 52K current miles. It took two restarts to stop the jerking this time. The transmission fluid was checked upon return to my home and it is still good, red in color, not black. This is a serious and reoccurring problem which needs to be addressed as soon as possible. If the transmission breaks down during driving, it might cause a crash and resulting injuries. Thank you.

Nov 14, 2023

failed torque converter/software results in car surging during moderate acceleration. This is unsafe when vehicle will not accelerate properly under load. The problem was repaired by the dealer who indicated this issue to be a widespread problem with this car. There were no warning messages.

Aug 2, 2023

Transmission fluid is burning up within 15,000 miles or less. When the flood is going bad the vehicle studders as you accelerate and it's not safe. Ive seen a lot of people online with the same issue. Contacted Honda of America and they also know about the issue and are not doing anything to help.

Jul 5, 2023

2019 Honda Pilot EX-L AWD; approximately 76k miles; all routine maintenance performed as scheduled Power Train (Jun-2023)-- had to replace both seals on on transmission / transfer case within the same month as case was leaking transmission fluid. Problem has been confirmed and repaired by two service centers (one seal each) with one at dealer and one at independent service center. No warning lights or indicators, just fluid leaking. Results could have been catastrophic transmission failure. Also replaced "burned" transmission fluid. Fuel / Propulsion System (Jun-2023) -- per service technician at dealer, loose / failing spring in high pressure fuel pump / fuel joint pipe. Per independent service center, if / when pump fails, fuel will spill into the engine. No warning lights or indicators, just noise when starting and accelerating. Trying to schedule service to address this but service centers and dealers are booked and part seems to be hard to come by taking 1-2 weeks to obtain. Neither of these issues should be happening at 75k miles and certainly not on a Honda.

Jumping when shifting and shifting delays

May 24, 2023

The transmission has slipped now twice while driving. The car keep on giving jerks hard after the car starts moving The car is in automatic drive mode. During acceleration, the car will jolt forward, also when using the brakes. The dealer did recognize the problem but said it is not covered by warranty and that transmission needed to be flushed… which was going to cost $740 and parts extra. After initial diagnostics recommended to flush transmission fluid 3 times. For even Diagnose they charged me $179 . I Have done maintenance on time Transmission fluid was change before 30000 miles for the first time and now they are asking to flush it 3 times ,As per Honda Manual recommendation every 30000 miles we need to change Transmission fluid . They should replace either Transmission or do the service free of cost under powertrain warranty(60000 miles) as I only have 46800 miles within 4 years of purchase.

May 24, 2023

Car is at 56K mileage. I was at a stop light engine was running, when I took my foot off the brake and tried to accelerate the engine died, the dashboard flashed a collision warning, (there were no cars or animals near my car), then all the screens dashboard behind steering wheel and on middle console all went blank. I restarted the car and made it home fine. Drove the car the next day for several stops (street and highway driving), then the same thing happened at a stop light and it restarted and I made it home fine. The third day there were no problems while driving 30+ miles streets and highway. The fourth day, drove about 15 miles to work and all was fine. Drove about 13 miles street and highway just fine. Ran an errand and car would not restart. Pressing the engine start button resulting in clicking but not engine start, headlight flashing, and the dashboard behind steering flashing various warning messages (cycled through several as I held the start button down, collision, braking system failure, power steering, etc.) but never started. Let it rest for ~3 hours and still would not start, same result with clicking and flashing headlights and warning messages.

Transmission jerking/hard shifting. Loses acceleration, especially when approaching a yield or left turn (I.e. slowing down then accelerating to make the turn, car stalls when accelerating) When taken to 2 different dealerships I was told they couldn’t diagnose problem and at the second one I was mansplained that it was probably “user error” bc it’s a “computerized transmission”. Informed them this was the third vehicle I’ve had with this type of transmission, one of which whose transmission broke and I’m fully aware of what a jerking, stalling and improperly functioning transmission felt like. Needless to say, no one would “diagnose” the problem and it has progressively gotten worse. More jerky, harder shifting. Can feel it sitting at an idle stop and sometimes when I press the gas pedal to accelerate it’s a good 2-3 seconds before the vehicle jerks into motion. I also have a video of the RPMs dropping for no reason at 30 MPH when the speed did not drop.

Feb 13, 2023

I am writing you today to discuss ongoing transmission problems that I am having with my 2019 Honda Pilot Elite AWD. On two occasions in the past several months, the transmission has reacted unexpected shifting into neutral on it's own and giving the error message "STOP DRIVING WHEN SAFE" "REFER TO OWNERS MANUAL". This has happened both on a busy interstate in heavy traffic and at low speeds while backing out onto a busy residential street. In both cases, my wife was driving with my children in the car. The incident yesterday had her stuck in the middle of a residential street with a Honda Pilot that would neither go forward nor back, finally went into park, and would not engage forward gears until the care was restarted 4 times. My family was terrified and embarrassed. This could have resulted in a broadside or T bone impact if traffic had been busier or distracted. We took a picture of the dashboard fault and took the vehicle immediately to Northside Honda in San Antonio, TX. The service manager Jose stated that they were unable to read any faults recorded by the computer and that I knew as much as they did about the problem at that time. He stated that they would be happy to hang onto my car for several days and try and make it act up and give a code. I told him there was no way that I knew as much as they did as I don't make a living servicing and repairing Honda vehicles. This is the job I expect them to be able to do. I was also told that they would not just start replacing things randomly. In the end, I have a Honda Pilot back that my wife is afraid to drive in what is a very busy city. I purchased this vehicle for the safety and reliability I expect from Honda. I am well aware that Honda knows there are substantial issues with the ZF9 speed they are putting or have placed in these vehicles. This is a safety concern for me and my family and I want someone to reach out to discuss this issue further.

Jan 11, 2023

While stopped at a traffic light on a busy street, the transmission shifted by itself from drive into neutral. The vehicle would not move forward and it would not let us shift it back into drive. I finally suggested to my wife that we turn the car off and see if that would help. After doing do , we were able to regain control of the car and shift it back to drive. We had another incident when the vehicle was almost new where we were turning left and the transmission just stopped as if we had shifted into neutral. We were able to continue without restarting the vehicle, but this is potentially a very dangerous situation. We reported this incident to the dealer with no resolution.

Dec 5, 2022

This is a 2019 Honda Pilot with start stop function. There is a noticeable delay in activation and getting longer with time; this is a 3 year old vehicle. During 2 other instances, the system failed and vehicle would not start on a public street. During these failures and delays, other than the obvious collision safety issue, the safety systems are unavailable via a message on the dash. When it eventually starts back up it functions normally. This is clearly the system prematurely failing or the system prematurely killing the battery (which has a normal functional life of 5 - 7 years).

When stopped at a red light the engine shifted from drive to neutral on its own. The brake became stiff and it took shutting off and restarting the car multiple times before it would shift. This is the third instance of this vehicle shifting to neutral on its own. After the previous times (they occurred within the same day- one shifting from park to neutral and the other similar to this experience, also at a red light), I took the car into the dealership where it came back showing no codes and could not be replicated while there. It is a push button electric shifter and the vehicle has had multiple recalls and service bulletins for electronics (all repaired) and has experienced issues beginning one month after I purchased the car brand new.

Vehicle failed to restart after stopping at a red light. Had to completely turn off the vehicle and restart it for it for engine to fire back up. Auto stop feature was on. Power seemed to suddenly go down and then the car was in park. Took couple of tries to start up as the car went into neutral in between.

In the past I have reported an issue with the auto stop to Price Honda. They sent me away saying nothing was wrong. Last night my car died while coming to a stop. No warning. No engine check lights. The emergency flashers wouldn't work nor doors or windows and I was stuck in the middle of the road with my children without Hazzard lights. No way to put car into neutral unless you have a special tool which even the Honda dealership couldn't help me with. This was not disclosed when we bought the car and was stuck in high traffic for over 2 hours until a mechanic came and finally got my car to start and move to side by switching the battery along with other stuff. He stated the battery should not have died in Drive and something is wrong. I see this is a known issue when looking at your website. I do not feel safe driving this Honda pilot. It can shut down at any time without warning and leave us stranded. Not being able to move into neutral in its self is safety Hazzard especially with no hazard lights. Price Honda [XXX] was very rude and brushed me off telling me no one is going to call me back over this. However their manager [XXX] called me shortly after and even acknowledged the known issue and said could take years to recall. This is not ok and why wasn't any of this disclosed. We should know that we need a tool (and know how to do it since in the engine) to save us if our car breaks down so we can at least get to side of road! I see This issue is being investigated by you, not sure why it was not disclosed especially when I already reported to Honda. My kids and I could have died yesterday. Single lane road no shoulders no flashers and cars flying past us. Not ok especially for this type of car that I bought brand new! I need assistance with this please before someone does get hurt. Two incidences occurred within one hour. When in park the vehicle suddenly shifted to neutral and began to roll backwards. The second incident occurred 30 minutes later. When stopped at a traffic light the vehicle again shifted into neutral on its own and would not allow you to switch to drive with out turning off the vehicle and then back on again. Both could have resulted in catastrophic injury. This vehicle has been recalled (and repaired) multiple times for electrical issues and has all push button gear shifts. It is up to date on all recall and service notices and maintenance.

I received a transmission system problem warning and a blind spot info system warning. Also the spot on the dash that tells you if you are in Park, Neutral, Drive or Reverse has all of the letters on top of each other and they were flashing.

-Automatic Start/Stop Feature -Vehicle's Engine did not Restart after the Auto Start/Stop engaged while in rush hour traffic. Also the Vehicle will immeadiatly or on start will shift the transmission in Neutral. Leaving the family in the middle of a unprotected left turn in the middle of a now red light intersection, this is dangerous and unsafe. I will also as you come to a complete stop after traffic on the highway hits a back up. - I have taken the vehicle in the same Honda Dealership they have not been able to "Reproduce" the problem. At the 1st attempt they recommended a new battery, but the problem is still occuring. I have given them video evidence in the hope they will have a solution to this Safety Defect. -The Dealership currently has my vehicle at its service department and i was told by the Service Manager that he is coordinating with his Service Representive for a possible solution. No other agencies have looked at the vehicle thus far. -Sometimes the Start/Stop indicator on the dash illumates sometimes there's a delay. The Message given my the Dash Reads "Gear Position is N. Release Accelerator Pedal" The Message that reads if you have the Transmission in D than Press the N button reads completely different and cannot be duplicated other than when the vehicle shifts into N on its own after a Auto Start/Stop. -This issue started occurring Randomly at 57,000 miles now at 59,000 its occuring more frequently and is causing unsafe situtations while in operation of the vehicle.

Vehicle is shutting down at red lights / stop signs; when this happens engine goes into idle mode. But pressing the gas pedal to resume travel, vehicle immediately shuts down. The vehicle needs to be turned off, and restarted. Restart is not always successful on first attempt, leaving vehicle stranded in congested traffic areas until it the issue clears. This type of event has had more than one occurrence.

Jul 21, 2022

The transmission on this vehicle will will shudder when at high RPMs and low speed such as when leaving a stop sign or traffic light. This shudder delays acceleration and can cause a safety issue when pulling out into traffic and leaves you not able to get out of on-coming traffic's way quick enough.

Jul 18, 2022 Crash

The contact owned a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while attempting to park the vehicle at approximately 2 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently accelerated forward violently and jumped a parking barrier. The contact stated she almost hit two nearby passengers; however was able to steer the vehicle to the side, and crashed into a tree where the vehicle came to a stop. There were no warning lights illuminated. The driver's air bag deployed. The vehicle was destroyed. The police arrived on the scene. There was a police report filed. One of the nearby passengers, which the contact almost hit was injured due to her fall and sustained a fractured arm that required medical treatment. There were injuries to the contact arms, chest, and stomach from the seat belt retraction however she declined medical treatment at the scene. The vehicle was towed to the local salvage lot. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 32,000.

Several times since 2019 while driving on not straight roads(slight curves either left or right), the Automatic Emergency Braking would activate, First I would get a big bold BRAKE in Red letters on the Display. I would be looking around, no cars are coming, I'm in the correct lane, not speeding and sometimes the car would actually start applying the brake(s) when there is absolutely no reason to apply the brakes. This has happened several times while we have driven the vehicle either on a 5 to 6 hour trip and maybe has occurred a total of 5 times since we have owned the vehicle

Reported to dealer twice and could not be replicated. They just tell me they have never heard of this problem. While at a traffic light the vehicle either shifts into neutral, park or second gear. Sometimes I press the accelerator and it does not go even though I’m in Drive. I gave up with the dealer but it is scary when people behind you honk and I could be rear ended because I’m scrambling to press the transmission buttons or restarting. A few incidents, I had to turn off and restart. I have learned if it is running and in Drive but does not go, I press the drive button several times to make it go or turn off and restart in lines of traffic. This vehicle has bells and whistles but falls short with engine and transmission. I currently own 5 Honda vehicles and 12 Hondas over the years. This vehicle is the one I feel the least secure in being dependable. It has 16,000 miles on it and has been problematic since approx 7,500 miles.

The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle the transmission had erroneously shifted from the drive position to the select position causing the vehicle to hesitate and sputter. After turning the vehicle off and restarting the engine the failure had self-corrected. On one occasion while parked with the engine idling, as contact was exiting the vehicle the transmission erroneously shifted out of the park position and began to drive forward knocking the contact to the ground and driving over the legs. During the incident, the driver sustained injuries to both legs and a fractured arm. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who reprogrammed the transmission. No further information was available. Later while operating the vehicle warning messages began to be displayed including the service engine, power train, and the warning message "danger pull over immediately". The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was not notified. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 52,000.

Start / Stop and Engine failure. When I have the start/stop feature enabled there have been numerous occasions where the car has stalled and will not restart. This has happened in critical traffic situations and has almost caused multiple accidents and injury. In addition, the engine has cut off while driving through parking lots and stopping for pedestrians; during this time I need to reset the entire car to get it to start back up while stuck in the middle of the street. One other occasions the start stop has failed where the car does restart but the entire car resents and delays me from moving until this is finished. I have taken the vehicle back to the dealer to review and they say everything is working as designed.

The contact would restart the vehicle as an unknown message was displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on multiple occasions; however, the failure persisted. Recently, the contact stated that the vehicle had locked up after the failure occurred and the gear shifter would not move from the park(P) position. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. As described in Power Train TSB A20-029 (but so far associated only with 2019 Pilot AWD Touring and Elite) - my 2019 Pilot AWD transmission has intermittent harsh or jerky upshifts with steady acceleration. The vehicle lags, failing to accelerate properly. This creates a safety issue when merging, turning into active traffic, etc. The issue was inspected via diagnostic snapshot at Jenkins & Wynne Honda in Clarksville TN on May 3, 2022. Output graph confirmed transmission lag occurring consistently throughout tech drive. Issue first appeared in April 2022 at approximately 32,000 miles, just 2,000 miles past 30,000 mile service completed in Jan. 2022. All vehicle service maintained according to manufacturer timeline and recommendations.

Intermittently when starting my vehicle while seated or using the factory remote start, the vehicle will move/drive forward up to several inches. I took videos of this and have taken it to the Honda dealer 3 separate times. The most recent time, they told me it was acceptable and that Honda says it can move up to 5” and be within acceptable tolerances. This is very unsafe due to my vehicle moving when unoccupied and with the parking brake set. The problem was confirmed and reproduced by the dealer. When I voiced my concern about the safety aspect, I was told that there should be nothing within 4’ of my vehicle. I feel unsafe to park my vehicle because I can’t control how close someone parks in front of me. I feel unsafe to park in my garage because I don’t want my car to drive forward and hit my property. I don’t want my daughter any where near my car when I am simply starting it.

We own a 2019 Honda Pilot Touring (VIN [XXX]). We purchased our vehicle from Checkered Flag Honda in Norfolk, Virginia in June 2019. This vehicle has 32,096 and is still under the factory bumper to bumper warranty. We have been experiencing an issue with the systems Auto-Start Stop feature. The vehicle's engine stops at a red light, and when we release the brake, on numerous occasions the vehicle fails to restart the engine and stalls in the middle of the road. This has happened more than 15 times since we have owned the vehicle and puts us in an unsafe situation. We took our vehicle in for service at Checkered Flag on 08/12/2021 and explained the problem we were having to the service technicians. During that visit, they were not able to duplicate our engine stalling issue (see service record attached). Since 08/2021, this issue has continued to occur 6-8 times since August. The engine attempts to restart itself after letting off the brake or after a set period of time, however after attempting to crank the engine, the car beeps and has to be restarted manually. When attempting to restart the car manually, the car will not start the next 2-3 attempts, and will eventually restart after multiple presses of the engine start button. This is extremely unsafe as we are not able to move the vehicle, sometimes for a few minutes. According to the service records, the technicians performed a battery check, and the battery was fine. I started the Honda Pilot drove on a driveway about 30 feet to an intersection. When clear I accelerated onto the road. The car was very slow to accelerate and I slowly rolled onto the road barely avoiding an oncoming car. While in my lane I stopped and observed an AWD warning light on the dashboard. I turned the engine off then restarted the engine. The AWD warning light was off and the car drove normally. The next day when starting my car to leave a parking lot the AWD warning light appeared on my dashboard. I turned the engine off then restarted the engine. The AWD warning light was off. I drove home without the AWD warning light reappearing.

UNEXPECTED MOVEMENT: INCIDENT #1. CAR PARKED ON LEVEL PAVEMENT IN PARK GEAR BUT MANUAL BRAKE NOT SET. I PRESSED BRAKE AND STARTED THE ENGINE. THEN LIFTED FOOT FROM BRAKE (WHILE CAR IS STILL IN PARK) AND THE BODY MOVED FORWARD 6-8 INCHES BEFORE I COULD REAPPLY THE BRAKES. INCIDENT #2 CAR PARKED IN PARK FACING STEEPLY DOWNHILL. ENGINE RUNNING WITH GEAR IN PARK. PRESSED REVERSE BUTTON AND LIFTED FOOT FROM BRAKE BUT BEFORE I COULD HIT THE GAS, THE CAR ROLLED FORWARD DOWNHILL ABOUT TWO FEET BEFORE I COULD REAPPLY THE BRAKE. MY 2019 PILOT ELITE HAS 16,400 MILES ON IT JUST STARTED A COUPLE MONTHS AGO WHERE I WOULD GET TO 2425 MILES AN HOUR IN THE CAR WITH LUNCH OR LURCH IT HAPPENS ALSO SOMETIMES WHEN I GET TO 30 SOME MILES AN HOUR IT ALL LURCHER LUNCH. LAST FRIDAY I MADE A LEFT TURN ONTO A MAJOR STREET AND WENT TO ACCELERATE IN THE CAR JUST WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING IT WOULDN'T ACCELERATE IT SLOW DOWN AND I HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE AND PUT MY FLASHERS ON I HAD TO WAIT A WHILE PROBABLY A MINUTE OR SO AND THEN I COULD PRESS MY FOOT ON THE EXCELERATOR AND GO FORWARD. THIS LURCHING OR LUNGING DOES NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME IT COULD BE ON A CITY STREET WHEN IT HAPPENS IT CAN BE WHEN I GO TO ACCELERATE TO GET ON THE EXPRESSWAY I HAVE MENTIONED THIS TO MY MECHANIC AT HONDA AND THEY DON'T SEEM TO KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM WOULD BE I'M WONDERING IF THERE IS RECALL THAT I MIGHT'VE MISSED OR THERE'S SOME THING THAT SOMEONE KNOWS I CAN'T BE THE ONLY ONE THAT THIS IS HAPPENING TO.

WHEN THE ENGINE IS DISABLED THE CAR CAN'T BE PUT INTO NEUTRAL BY THE OPERATOR. IN MY CASE, ON 2/13/20 THE STARTER MALFUNCTIONED AT < 7000 MILES-IT HAS SINCE BEEN REPLACED. I WAS IN A PARKING GARAGE, AND NO STRUCTURE TRUCKS WERE AVAILABLE TO TOW FROM THE SPOT THE CAR WAS DISABLED. THE PLAN WAS TO PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL AND PUSH IT TO THE STREET WHERE IT COULD BE TOWED. THE OWNER'S MANUAL DOES NOT TELL WHAT TO DO. THE DEALER DIDN'T KNOW, EITHER. IF IT'S GOOGLED, A YOUTUBE VIDEO COMES UP, THAT IDENTIFIES AN ODDLY SHAPED DEVICE OR BOLT DEEP IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. BUT EVEN THE AAA MECHANIC WHO CAME TO THE SCENE,WITH ALL HIS TOOLS, COULD NOT GET IT TO TURN. I ASKED THE DEALERSHIP IF THERE WAS ANY OTHER WAY AND ULTIMATELY THEY SAID "NO." THEY LATER TOLD ME, AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH, THAT HONDA HAS A SPECIAL TOOL, REQUIRING THREE EXTENSIONS, USED TO ACCOMPLISH THIS DURING TRANSPORT TO THE DEALER. THIS SEEM QUITE UNSAFE. OBVIOUSLY, CARS CAN BE DISABLED IN MANY WAYS. WITHOUT A REASONABLY ACCESSIBLE MEANS OF PUTTING THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, IT CANNOT BE MOVED IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION (FOR EXAMPLE, OUT OF A LANE OF TRAFFIC). IT DEFINITELY CAN'T BE DONE BY AN OWNER (UNLESS, I SUPPOSE IT'S SOMEONE WHO HAS THE ABILITY TO GOOGLE DURING THE EMERGENCY, FINDS THE VIDEO, AND HAS THE SPECIAL TOOL). PLEASE NOTE THE CAR WASH FEATURE WILL NOT WORK BECAUSE THE ENGINE HAS TO BE RUNNING FOR THAT. WHEN I FIRST BROUGHT THIS UP, NO ONE AT THE DEALERSHIP KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS DEFECT. I HAVE SINCE LEARNED THAT MOST CARS HAVE A SHIFT LOCK OVERRIDE LEVER EASILY ACCESSIBLE IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT, OFTEN ON OR NEAR THE SHIFT CONSOLE. IN MY CONVERSATION WITH THE DEALERSHIP,THEY SAY THAT 2020 PILOTS AND 2019 AND 2020 PASSPORTS ALSO HAVE THIS DESIGN. I DO NOT KNOW HOW MANY OTHER VEHICLES ARE AFFECTED. THIS SEEMS HIGHLY UNSAFE AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. THANK YOU.

PURCHASED THE NEW 2019 HONDA PILOT ELITE AT AROUND 3,000 MILES. WHILE DRIVING AROUND 25-30 MILES PER HOUR SPEED ON PAVED ROADS, SOMETIMES NOT ALL THE TIME. THE CAR DOWNSHIFTING AND STALLING FOR A FEW SECONDS BEFORE BEING ABLE TO ACCELERATE AGAIN. THIS HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING ON A NICE SUNNY DAY WITH NO LOOSE GRAVEL OR RAIN, IN A 4 WAY INTERSECTION MAKING A LEFT TURN ON GREEN WHICH MADE THE CAR STALLED AND WASN'T ABLE TO ACCELERATE FOR A GOOD 1 TO 2 SECOND. GOOD THING THERE WASN'T ANY OTHER VEHICLE THAT IS NEAR BY. THIS CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AND BODY INJURY! THIS HAPPEN DURING TURNS AND STRAIGHT DRIVING. I'VE DISCUSS THIS EVERY TIME I GO AND GET THE CAR MAINTENANCE AT THE HONDA DEALERSHIP BUT THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM I'VE HAD ENCOUNTER. THE CAR AS OF NOW HAS 15,651 MILES AND DOWNSHIFTING AND STALLING COMES AND GOES WHENEVER IT WANTS TO ITS NOT CONTESTANT. FOR A NEW CAR OVER $50K PLUS NOT INCLUDING TAXES, ITS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO ME AND ANYONE WHO IS DRIVING OR PEDESTRIAN WALKING NEAR BY!

ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS I HAVE EXPERIENCED MY CAR NOTIFYING ME OF A TRANSMISSION ISSUE AND KICKING IT INTO NEUTRAL ON ITS OWN. THE FIRST TIME THIS OCCURRED BACK AT THE END OF NOVEMBER, USED AUTO START AND GOT INTO MY CAR SHORTLY AFTER. TURNED ON THE CAR AND PLACED INTO REVERSE. STILL STOPPED, PULLING UP MY GPS AND HEARD THE ALERT AND SAW ON MY DASHBOARD 'STOP DRIVING WHEN SAFE. TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. SEE MANUAL" IT LIGHTS UP THAT FOR A MOMENT THEN GOES AWAY. BUT IT SHIFTED MY CAR INTO NEUTRAL. DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING OF IT. FINISHED THE THE GPS. TOOK ANOTHER MOMENT AND PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE. IT DID IT AGAIN AND IT WAS BACK IN NEUTRAL WHEN I WAS JUST IN REVERSE. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY. THE NEXT DAY CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. NOTHING WAS STORED IN THE DATABASE. AND THEY SAID THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT AND COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. FAST FORWARD TO TODAY, AUTO START, GOT INTO CAR. PLACED IN DRIVE FOR A MOMENT AND BEFORE MOVING THE ALERT CAME UP AND CAR WAS IN NEUTRAL. IT DID IT THREE TIMES. TOOK A PHOTO OF THE ALERT WHICH IS EXACTLY AS QUOTED. I AM AT A LOSS WITH HONDA AND WHAT TO DO. I HAVE ALSO SEARCHED THE OWNERS MANUAL AND THERE'S NOTHING OF THIS QUOTED ISSUE.
