I want to go start my car just now to go to the store and when I turned it on and started it up the ABS lights emergency brake light and EPS light always lit up on my dashboard so I grabbed the manual to try to figure out what it is seen what each was individual thing standard for so I googled each individual and that's when I realized there's a recall for this from my vehicle for the ABS malfunction
The EPS sensor trips when making a turn rendering the vehicle completely inoperable. I have to put the vehicle in park, shut it off, then turn it back on to continue moving. This is highly dangerous if it were to happen on the highway.
The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 MPH, the steering wheel was making an abnormal clicking noise. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the power steering coupling needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was no longer covered under warranty. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER (WILLIAMSBURG HYUNDAI 7277 RICHMOND RD, WILLIAMSBURG, VA 23188) WHO RE-CALIBRATED THE EPS BUT WAS TOLD MY VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL CAMPAIGN 127 DUE TO MANUFACTURING DATE OF JULY 2007, WHICH IS BEFORE THE RECALL COVERAGE DATE OF JUNE 2008. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN PART OF THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. CURRENT MILEAGE IS AROUND 66,000 MILES.

I STARTED MY CAR AT THE TOP OF MY DRIVEWAY AND DROVE DOWN THE DRIVEWAY TOWARD THE ROAD AS USUAL. NO TRAFFIC WAS COMING FROM EITHER DIRECTION, SO I ACCELERATED SLIGHTLY TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN ONTO THE ROAD. AS I WAS PULLING ONTO THE ROAD, I COMPLETELY LOST THE ABILITY TO STEER THE VEHICLE AND TO CONTROL THE DIRECTION OF IT. CONSEQUENTLY, I ALMOST WENT OVER A 10 TO 12 FOOT HIGH WALL ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO PREVENT GOING OVER THE WALL BY BRAKING, BUT I WAS PARALYZED BY SHOCK AND FRIGHT. A NEIGHBOR, WHO IS A RETIRED AUTOMOBILE MECHANIC CAME AND RESTARTED THE CAR AND GOT IT BACK INTO MY DRIVEWAY. THE CAR STARTED WITHOUT DIFFICULTY, BUT THE REDLIGHT (EPS) WAS SHOWING ON THE DASH. I CALLED THE HYUNDAI DEALER WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED, BUT THEY WOULD NOT LOOK AT IT UNTIL THE FOLLOWING DAY. WHEN THEY DID, THEY SAY THAT THEY HAVE "UPDATED THE ECU' AND CHARGED ME $89.95 FOR DOING SO. THEY CLAIMED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO A BAD BATTERY; HOWEVER THE BATTERY HAS NEVER FAILED TO START THE VEHICLE AND RUN ALL DEVICES. I DRIVE ALONE, AND NEED TO DRIVE AT NIGHT VERY OFTEN; HOWEVER I AM NOW AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE I SEE ONLINE THAT THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS TO LOSING STEERING ABILITY REPEATEDLY AFTER THE "UPDATE" TO THE EPS (OR ECU). I CALLED HYUNDAI, AND THE AGENT TOLD ME THAT MY VIN WAS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST, WHICH SHE SAID IS NOW COMPLETED. ON MANY OF THE ONLINE ACCOUNTS OF ACCIDENTS AND ROLLOVERS DUE TO LOSS OF STEERING ABILITY, THOSE VEHICLES VINS WERE ALSO NOT ON THE LIST OF VEHICLES DEEMED TO BE AFFECTED; HOWEVER THEY WERE HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS. MY CAR HAD 47,792 MILES AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, HAD NO STEERING RECALL, AND WAS MANUFACTURED JUNE 9, 2008. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER. CLEARLY, THIS VEHICLE SHOULD HAVE ALSO BEEN ON THE RECALL LIST BECAUSE THE PROBLEMS ARE IDENTICAL TO THOSE RECALLED UNDER #127 RECALL

MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY (55 MPH LIMIT) AND SLOWED DOWN TO APPROX. 10 MPH DUE TO A TRAFFIC JAM WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE EPS LIGHT CAME ON AND SHE LOST HER STEERING. AT THAT SPEED, IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR HER TO STEER. SHE MANAGED TO PULL THE CAR OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND CALLED ME FOR HELP. I RESEARCHED HER SITUATION AND LEARNED THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR ALL 2008 ELANTRAS AND LATER TO FIX THE EPS. THE DATE OF MANUFACTURE HAD TO BE AFTER 1 JUNE 2008. UNFORTUNATELY, HER CAR WAS BUILT IN AUG 2007. THAT BEING SAID, PERHAPS THE CURRENT EPS RECALL SHOULD BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE 2008 MODELS MANUFACTURED BEFORE JUNE 2008? I CALLED FOR A TOW TRUCK AS IT WOULD BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS (AND PRETTY MUCH IMPOSSIBLE) FOR HER TO DRIVE ANY FURTHER. WHILE WAITING FOR THE TOW, I RESEARCHED THE EPS SITUATION ONLINE AND LEARNED FROM A BLOG THAT TURNING OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTING IT SOMETIMES RESETS THE EPS. SHE DID SO AND IT "FIXED" HER STEERING. I'M CERTAIN THIS IS A TEMPORARY FIX ONLY AND WILL NOT PREVENT A FUTURE REOCCURRENCE OF THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

IN OCTOBER 2012 I WAS DRIVING ON LINCOLN DRIVE IN PHILA. I WAS GOING AROUND THE FIRST CORNER (TO THE RIGHT). ONCE THE TURN WAS COMPLETE, I ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE CAR IN THE OTHER DIRECTION BUT THE CAR KEPT GOING RIGHT. MY CAR ENDED UP SPINNING 270 DEGREES BEFORE IT CAME TO A STOP. I TURNED THE CAR OFF WHILE I GATHERED MYSELF AND TURNED THE CAR BACK ON AGAIN. A COP CHECKED ON ME TO SEE IF I WAS OK, THEN I WENT ABOUT MY BUSINESS. THANKFULLY THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO MY CAR OR OTHERS. FAST FORWARD TO 11/30/16. I WAS TAKING THE BACKROADS TO WORK LIKE I NORMALLY DO. I MADE A RIGHT TURN ONTO A ROAD THEN ATTEMPTED TO STRAIGHTEN THE CAR OUT. THE CAR KEPT GOING RIGHT, SO I HAD TO YANK THE STEERING WHEEL TO GET IT STRAIGHT GAIN. A FEW MILES DOWN THE SAME ROAD I WAS GOING AROUND A BEND TO THE RIGHT. ONCE AGAIN THE STEERING GOT STUCK IN ONE DIRECTION AND I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR TRYING TO GET THE CAR STRAIGHT AGAIN. I WENT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC TO CHECK OUT THE PROBLEM. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM BUT IT MAY BE RELATED TO A POWER STEERING RECALL REPAIR THAT HAD BEEN DONE MY CAR IN APRIL 2015 AND THAT I SHOULD GO BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT PERFORMED THE REPAIR AND THE SAID THAT THE MOTOR IN THE STEERING COLUMN IS FAILING DUE TO AGE AND MILEAGE OF THE VEHICLE I NEEDED A WHOLE NEW STEERING COLUMN. TOTAL BILL: $2400. I CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER AND THE AGREED WITH THE DEALERSHIP. IN ORDER TO GET MY CAR BACK FROM THE DEALERSHIP I HAVE TO PAY A $115 DIAGNOSTIC FEE AND SIGN OFF THAT I AM DRIVING A "POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS" VEHICLE. *TR

THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THE CAMPAIGN IS 'CLOSED', THEY NEED TO CHARGE ME TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM..... 'WAIT, I JUST NEED TO GET WHATEVER YOU FIXED FOR THE RECALL NOTICE?' NO, THE CAMPAIGN IS CLOSED SO WE NEED TO DIAGNOSE THE SYSTEM, AND IF NOTHING IS WRONG, WE CANNOT DO ANYTHING. IS THIS PRACTICE CORRECT? AT 74,000 MILES YOU CANT STEER YOUR CAR? YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME. THEY SAY IT IS NOT WARRANTED BUT $2310.00 PLEASE WILL REPAIR THE PROBLEM. GOOGLE SEARCH SHOWED HYUNDAI HAD A RECALL FOR THIS, AND THIS RECALL WAS PERFORMED ON MY CAR BACK IN MAY. STARTED CAR BACK UP, PROBLEM WAS GONE, SO BROUGHT CAR TO HYUNDAI DEALER, AND THEY WILL RUN DIAGNOSTICS AND CONTACT HYUNDAI FOR NEXT STEPS. I CALLED HYUNDAI MYSELF AND WAS GIVEN A COMPLAINT NUMBER: 8206849. APPARENTLY WHAT THEY DID ON MY RECALL VISIT IN MAY 2015 DID NOT PREVENT THIS PROBLEM FROM HAPPENING. IT WAS SCARY AND DANGEROUS TO HAVE HAPPEN -- THIS IS ABSOLUTELY A SAFETY ISSUE.

THIS IS A FOLLOW-UP TO ODI NUMBER 10395729, POWER STEERING FAILURE ON A 2008 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THIS SECOND INCIDENT OCCURRED THREE DAYS AND 26 MILES DRIVEN AFTER THE INITIAL REPAIR BY THE DEALERSHIP. IN THIS CASE, I WAS IDLING IN THE LEFT HAND TURNING LANE OF A 6 LANE DIVIDED HIGHWAY, WAITING IN A LINE OF CARS FOR A LEFT-TURN GREEN ARROW. THE STEERING WHEEL TWITCHED, TRIED TO ROTATE REALLY, IN MY HANDS, THEN FELT LOCKED. I LOOKED AT THE DASHBOARD AND THE RED EPS LIGHT WAS ON. I HAD RESEARCHED HYUNDAI EPS LIGHT PROBLEMS ON THE INTERNET SINCE MY FIRST INCIDENT, AND SOME POSTERS RECOMMENDED TURNING OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTING THE CAR TO ACTIVATE THE STEERING AGAIN. I TRIED THIS AND THE EPS LIGHT DID GO OUT WHEN THE CAR RESTARTED, AND THE FEELING OF STEERING WHEEL CONTROL RETURNED. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE OFF THE HIGHWAY BUT GOT NO MORE THAN 1/4 MILE TOTAL BEFORE THE STEERING LOCKED AGAIN AND THE EPS LIGHT WAS ON AGAIN. I DRIFTED TO THE CURB AND RESTARTED THE CAR AGAIN. THE STEERING CAME BACK ON AGAIN, AND I PROCEEDED ABOUT ANOTHER 1/4 MILE AT SLOW SPEED BEFORE THE STEERING LOCKED AGAIN AND THE EPS LIGHT REAPPEARED. I RESTARTED THE CAR AGAIN AND THIS TIME WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE LAST BLOCK TO MY HOME AND PULLED TO THE CURB. WHILE IDLING THERE, THE EPS LIGHT CAME ON AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AGAIN. I CALLED THE DEALER FOR ASSISTANCE, AND THEY RETURNED MY CALL AND TOLD ME TO CALL HYUNDAI ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE FOR A TOW. THE DEALERSHIP KEPT THE CAR SEVERAL DAYS AS THEY NEEDED TO ORDER A PART. THE WORK ORDER STATES '13090 SOP PART, REPLACE STEERING COLUMN, PART # 56310-2H300, SHAFT C1290 TORQUE SENSOR ABD'. IN ONE MONTH OF DRIVING SINCE THIS REPAIR, I HAVE HAD NO RED EPS LIGHTS, NO STEERING FAILURE. HOWEVER, THE STEERING WHEEL DOES CONTINUE TO TWITCH ON ITS OWN, SOMETIMES WHILE IDLING, SOMETIMES WHILE MOVING. IT IS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, SO I DEPRESSED THE CLUTCH AND PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR. I HEARD THE ENGINE REV, SO I REALIZED IT WAS POWER STEERING FAILURE, NOT A STALL. I CONTINUED TO PUMPED THE BRAKES AND FOUGHT WITH THE STEERING TO MAINTAIN CONTROL. I AM OLD ENOUGH TO HAVE DRIVEN CARS THAT DID NOT HAVE POWER STEERING, BUT STEERING IN THIS CONDITION WAS MORE DIFFICULT THAN THAT. I SLOWED THE CAR WITHOUT INCIDENT AND MANAGED TO PULL IT INTO A PARKING LOT. I REALIZED THAT THE PARKING LOT WAS CONNECTED TO A SIDE STREET AND WAS ONLY A BLOCK AWAY FROM THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, SO I DROVE THE CAR ONTO THEIR LOT. OPER TO MFR SPEC. THE DEALERSHIP DID THIS UNDER WARRANTY, NO CHARGE. THEY ALSO PERFORMED 2 OTHER RECALLS RELATED TO AIRBAGS WHILE THE CAR WAS THERE. THIS WAS FOLLOWED A FEW HOURS LATER BY ANOTHER CALL SAYING THEY HAD TEST DRIVEN THE CAR AND IT FAILED. THEY SAID THEY WERE IN TOUCH WITH THE REGIONAL OFFICE FOR HELP. I CALLED THEIR CONSUMER AFFAIRS DEPT. AND WAS TOLD THAT THE SERVICE DEPT. HAD FAILED TO PERFORM ONE OF SEVERAL TESTS REQUIRED TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. THEY WERE TO CALL ME WITHIN 1-3 DAYS. IT IS DAY 2 NOW AND I HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING. I DO NOT TRUST HYUNDAI AND WANT TO GET RID OF THE CAR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 800 AND CURRENT MILEAGE IS 2,000. THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES IT FELT STRANGE. THE CONSUMER STATED THERE WAS A BURNING TYPE SMELL COMING FROM THE VEHICLE, BUT THE DEALER TOLD HER IT WOULD GO AWAY. THE CONSUMER STATED IT HAS BEEN A MONTH AND THE SMELL WAS STILL PRESENT.
