About 3 years ago the EPS light came on. Brought it to the dealer who said it needed 3500.00 dollars worth of work to replace the steering column. Refused the work and they reset the light. Now after checking i see this was part of a recall 127 . My car was checked and stamped fine so out of luck. Car works good for 3 years now it is doing it again. Just driving straight down the road and power steering stops working, then starts working. Right now steering is fine and the PS light is on all the time. Any help would be appreciated. Car only has 120,000 miles and is in great shape except forthe steering.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD MY EPS LIGHT CAME ON AND POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING. THAT IT INDICATES A PLROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE'S POWER STEERING SYSTEM. I HAVE SHARCHED AND READ THAT THERE WAS A RECALL. ON MY 209 HYUNDIA ELANTRA BUT WHEN I VIN IT SAYS NO OPEN RECALLS. DOES THIS MEAN IT HAS BEEN FIXED BEFORE OR IS MINE NOT COVERED UNDER ECALL. This vehicle is part of RECALL CAMPAIGN 127. This vehicle had a software update to "Fix" problem but is now recurring. The dealership says they will not fix it.

On several occasions, starting in the Fall of 2023 and occurring most recently on 8/9/24, I observed my Elantra's red EPS warning light turn on, and the steering wheel became very "stiff" while driving. Power steering was instantly disabled, resulting in momentary loss of control of the rate of turning in the vehicle. These symptoms are in accordance with Hyundai Recall Campaign 127, but a VIN search revealed the vehicle has been serviced for the recall. I have reached out to Hyundai customer service and a dealership, neither of which attempted to fix the issue.

I purchased this vehicle in December of last year and the steering was fine. The next day I took it to the Waco Hyundai dealership and was told they didn't have the software to do the EPS recall. A few days later, the power steering went out. I called Killeen Hyundai and made an appointment two weeks out to have them look at it. Long story short, after almost 2 months of them having my vehicle they were unable to update the recall. I was told I had 24 hours to pick it up. Where do I go from here?

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving approximately 10 MPH, the power steering failed to operate as needed. The contact stated that the red "EPS" and "EST" warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the electric power steering assist had failed, and that the EPS module needed to be replaced. The contact was advised by the mechanic about NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V100000 (Steering) which was associated with the VIN, and to take the vehicle to a dealer for the recall repaired. The contact had driven the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the EPS module needed to be updated; however, the recall was only for an update to the EPS not a replacement. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 154,000.

When driving my eps has gone out over two dozen times. It is random. I could be driving for 2 hours or it could happen when I start the car. Issue is resolved temporarily when I turn off my car for a few minutes and restart. I brought it to my normal shop and at first they had no idea what it was and realigned the column. This worked for a couple weeks and the issue started again. They believe it may be the motor now and I have to go to a dealership. This started completely random, my car drives fine until it comes on. The eps light clicks and comes on, making it hard to steer. I can't drive in the highway for my safety and the safety of others. I've had my power steering go out mid turn, in the rain. It's unpredictable. This initially started on 08/20 and is ongoing despite an attempt to fix it.

The EPS light is staying on flashing sometimes and now I can't steer to the left with assisted power steering..the steering is now locking up at times ..there was a recall I saw but now it's not showing up on my car..it's a 2009 hyundai elantra .I have pictures to show that it said my car is effected with this recall but now it's coming up on all systems as no recall open to it..I just bought this cat from someone in the month of July 2023 and this is now happening to me..I have put all I have into purchasing this car and contacted dealership in florence ky..they claim there's no open recall n I have provided the proof needed to show them that this was on recall..

On two separate occasions the electronic power steering turned off while driving the car. The red EPS dashboard indicator turned on and the steering felt very heavy. The power steering came back on after the car was turned off and on again. The car's software was already up to date and Hyundai's recall "fix" did not prevent the problem. This problem is intermittent and has only happened twice. It occurs while driving, leading to a potentially unsafe situation. There are no warnings or symptoms before the problem occurs.

EPS (Electronic Power Steering) light comes on on the dashboard . This prevents steering the vehicle from a dead stop or turning the vehicle is extremely hard. Vehicle has to be shut down and restarted, sometimes 1 to 2 times to eliminate the EPS light . Problem is repeatable every morning. Hyundai's number for this recall is 127. However at initial recall appointment only SW was updated. Per recall EPS unit may need to be replaced.

I bought the car for my mom about a year and a half it drove fine to just recently the eps light came after She turn on to the road and the steering got real tight and was hard to merge to the side road luckily She was going at a low speed to get over. So I done some searching to find that there was a recall 127 for that problem in 2015 so I called the dealership and they requested to have the car scan and said it was a software update . So I got the update and the angle sensor calibration it drove fine for 2 months now it’s getting worst. So they said the electric motor andsteering colmun has failed but they can’t replace because the recall is not active anymore .so I’m not sure what to do

At random times while driving (operating vehicle while in motion on public roads) the EPS light turned on and power steering stopped working. I pulled over on the side of the road and would shut off the engine and restart the vehicle and the power steering would restart. Sometime it would take several times to stop and start the vehicle for the power steering to start working again. The power steering shutting off has occurred four times within the past 18months while driving on public roads. The car has only 78,613 miles and the electronic power steering is malfunctioning.

today my steering wheel was very "loose" to the touch. in other words it was far easier to turn the steering wheel than usual. it seemed that i was required to turn the steering wheel much more than usual to even make the simpliest of turns. i recently had air conditioning work done by a local auto shop. it seems very coincidental that all of a sudden my steering mechanism is working so poorly that my life may be in danger.

The dealer was notified of the matter and informed her that the warning light was illuminated prior to service. The contact contested that claim and stated that she would have brought the warning light to their attention if the light had illuminated prior to service. EVER SINCE THEN I RANDOMLY LOOSE POWER STEERING AND THE EPS LIGHT COMES ON. I'VE LOST POWER STEERING WHILE DRIVING, RIGHT AFTER SHIFTING INTO GEAR (REVERSE AND DRIVE), AND AFTER I START TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOPPED POSITION. THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A PATTERN. THE CAR'S KEY PULLS OUT OF THE IGNITION WHEN THE GEAR IS STILL IN DRIVE POSITION, WHILE THE ENGINE IS ON OR OFF MODE. THIS CREATES A SAFETY ISSUE, IF UNINTENTIONALLY THE DRIVER TURNS OFF THE ENGINE AND PULLS OUT THE KEY OFF THE IGNITION, WHILE THE GEAR IS STILL ON DRIVE POSITION. IT HAPPENED TWICE : AROUND JUNE 2018, AND TODAY 12/20/2019. TODAY, WHILE DRIVING AT NORMAL SPEED AT 40 MILES/HR IN A CITY ROAD , SUDDENLY THE EPS WARNING LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED, THEN THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED UP. I ALMOST GOT HIT BY OTHER CARS. LUCKILY I MANAGED TO GO TO THE SIDE ROAD, TURNED OFF THE CAR AND TURNED ON AGAIN , THEN THE THE CAR WAS WORKING NORMALLY. BACK IN 2018, THIS EPS WARNING LIGHT HAPPENED, SAME THING. STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED , RESTARTED THEN THE CAR WORKING FINE , I THOUGHT IT WAS A BATTERY THEN I CHANGED IT AND I THOUGHT MAY BE THE BATTERY CAUSED IT.

I HAVE CHECKED IF I WAS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE TIE ROD ENDS BUT BOTH ARE FINE. I TRACE BACK THE PROBLEM GOING FROM THE FIREWALL HEADING TOWARDS UP AND I HAVE ISOLATED THE SOUND COMING FORM THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING (EPS) MOTOR JUST RIGHT ABOVE THE UNIVERSAL JOINT. THE STEERING ONCE SEIZE TO OPERATE WHEN PARK BUT I HAVE NOT DUPLICATED IT YET SINCE THAT INCIDENCE. NO CODES HAVE REFLECTED ON THE DASHBOARD. THIS IS A VEHICLE BEING DRIVEN BY A SENIOR ADULT WOMAN.

WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE EPS LIGHT WOULD ARBITRARILY TURN ON AND GO AWAY WHEN THE IGNITION KEY IS CYCLED OFF AND BACK ON. WHEN THE LIGHT COMES ON, IT IMMEDIATELY BECOMES DIFFICULT TO STEER. THE CAR REVERTS TO MANUAL STEERING MODE AND REQUIRES SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF EFFORT TO CONTROL. WE HAVE HAD THE EPS LIGHT TURN ON MULTIPLE TIMES WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING AND PUTTING US IN DANGEROUS, UNSAFE CONDITIONS ON THE ROAD. RECENTLY, THE EPS LIGHT IS STAYING ON AND NOT GOING AWAY. WE VISITED THE LOCAL DEALER TO REPORT THIS ISSUE AND THEIR DIAGNOSIS RESULTED IN ERROR CODES RELATED TO THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR-ELECTRICAL, TORQUE SENSOR MAIN SIGNAL FAULT, ECU (BRAKE SYSTEM) HARDWARE ERROR, CAN TIME-OUT EMS, AND MOTOR. WHEN ASKED, THEY WERE NOT WILLING TO PERFORM AN EVALUATION AS PER THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN. THEY RECALIBRATED THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR AND STATED THAT IF THE PROBLEM REOCCURS, WE WOULD NEED TO RETURN TO THE DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN (PART NUMBER 56310-2H250 AS1) AND PAY FULL COST OF REPAIR (PART AND LABOR). THIS PART NUMBER IS LISTED AS A REPLACEABLE ITEM PER THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DEALERSHIP PERFORMED AN EPS S/W CHK/ECU UPGRADE IN 2015 WHEN NO ISSUES WERE PRESENT AND REFUSE TO FURTHER ASSIST WHEN THE ISSUE IS PRESENT WHEN THE RECALL CAMPAIGN INFORMATION LETTER IN MARCH 2015 CLEARLY STATES THAT THE FINAL REMEDY HAS NOT BEEN DEVELOPED AT THIS TIME. THE DIAGNOSIS SHOWS THAT A FAULTY PART WAS INSTALLED BY THE CAR MANUFACTURER, AS STATED IN THE RECALL, AND THE DEALERSHIP IS REFUSING TO ADDRESS THE ACTUAL ISSUE. INSTEAD OF SOLVING THE PROBLEM, THEY INSIST THAT WE DRIVE THIS POTENTIALLY UNSAFE VEHICLE UNTIL THE ISSUE REOCCURS. THIS IS A SAFETY RELATED CONCERN AS THERE IS NO WARNING TO WHEN THIS ISSUE WILL OCCUR. THEIR RECALL NOTICE STATES THAT THE EPS PROBLEMS COULD RESULT IN AN INCREASED RISK OF A CRASH.

AFTER THE FAILURE RECURRED, THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL ELECTRICAL ISSUES PERTAINING TO THE INTERIOR LIGHTING BEING ACTIVATED WHEN THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH WAS TURNED TO THE ON POSITION. ADDITIONALLY, THE BATTERY WOULD DRAIN OVERNIGHT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 15936968. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 149,000.

A STEADY "EPS" LIGHT CAME ON MY HYUNDAI ELANTRA 2009. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS ABOUT 9/2018. THERE WERE NO NOTICEABLE MALFUNCTIONS WHILE DRIVING. A FEW WEEKS LATER, HOWEVER, THE LIGHT STARTED FLASHING WHEN I STARTED THE CAR, AND WHEN TRYING TO REVERSE FROM DRIVEWAY, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME VERY HARD AND I INITIALLY COULD NOT TURN IT. WHEN I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND ON, I WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE WHEEL AND THE LIGHT WENT OFF. HOWEVER, A WEEK OF TWO LATER, I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN, THIS TIME FLASHING, AND THE STEERING WHEEL KIND OF GOT STUCK. I COULD HARDLY HANDLED IT. THAT SITUATION WAS VERY SCARY. THEN, THE LIGHT BECAME STEADY, AND I WAS ABLE TO STEER THE WHEEL WITHOUT DIFFICULTY. BUT LAST WEEK, I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, AND SAME THING HAPPENED -THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME TOO HARD TO TURN. ON 12/15/2018, I TOOK THE CAR TO HYUNDAI SERVICE AND A DIAGNOSIS WAS DONE (PAID $128.00 REFUNDABLE ONLY IF REPAIRS WERE NEEDED AND DONE AT THEIR SHOP). MY CAR HAS 79,909 MILES, BUT I TOLD IT IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE IT IS PAST 60K MILES). THE DIAGNOSIS WAS AN "INTERNAL FAILURE OF MOTOR DRIVEN POWER STEERING MOTOR," WHICH WOULD COST $2,188.21 TO REPAIR. THIS CAR HAD BEEN RECALLED TWICE FOR POWER STEERING ISSUES (RECALL 127 ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING SOFTWARE AND CAMPAIGN "ELANTRA AND SONATA STEERING COUPLING". IN SEARCHING THE INTERNET, I HAVE FOUND MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ABOUT POWER STEERING MALFUNCTIONS ON 2009 HYUNDAI ELANTRA AND LATER MODELS, AS WELL AS OTHER HYUNDAI VEHICLES, WHICH HAD ALSO INVOLVED MALFUNCTIONS WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS, LIFE-THREATENING MALFUNCTION, WHICH SHOULD BE PROMPTLY INVESTIGATED. STEERING MAKES CLICKING SOUNDS, WHEN MOVED FROM A CENTER POSITION, EITHER LEFT OR RIGHT. STEERING SEEMS TO 'STICK' I.E. DOES NOT MOVE SMOOTHLY. THE CULPRIT IS A "STEERING COUPLING" MADE OUT OF PLASTIC THAT COUPLES THE STEERING MOTOR TO THE STEERING COLUMN. KNOWING THIS IS A DEFECT, HYUNDAI QUIETLY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON ITS REPLACEMENT TO 100,000 MILES. HOWEVER THEY DID NOT SEND OUT A NOTIFICATION LETTER TO VEHICLE OWNERS. MYSELF AND MANY OTHER HYUNDAI VEHICLE OWNERS ARE VERY CONCERNED THAT THIS WOULD LEAD TO LOOSING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING, LEADING TO ACCIDENTS AND LOSS OF LIFE. THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECTIVE DESIGN, AND INCORRECT CHOICE OF COUPLING MATERIAL, WHICH IS BOUND TO GET WORN OFF OFTEN, SINCE IT IS A PLASTIC PART SITTING BETWEEN TWO METALLIC PARTS MOVING AGAINST EACH OTHER. THIS SHOULD BE A DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE FIXED REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE OF THE VEHICLE. INSTEAD NHTSA HAS APPARENTLY ALLOWED THE COMPANY TO JUST EXTEND THE WARRANTY ON FIXING THIS; SO IT DOESN'T NEED TO BEAR THE EXPENSES AS VEHICLES GO BEYOND 100,000 MILES. IT TAKES $400-$500 TO FIX MAINLY DUE TO LABOR EXPENSES, TO REPLACE A $5 PART WHICH IS HARD TO REACH. AFTER PULLING OVER I TURNED CAR ON AND OFF BUT THE POWER STEERING WILL NOT RETURN. I SEE THAT HYUNDAI ALREADY ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS FOR MY CAR YEAR, BUT MY VIN WASN'T INCLUDED. THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP WANTS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE STEERING SHAFT AND COLUMN AND SAYS THAT IT DOESN'T APPLY TO THE RECALL.

I BROUGHT MY 2009 ELANTRA (DRIVEN LESS THAN 42,000 MILES) TO A LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP MID JULY BECAUSE EPS WAS LIGHT ON AND I HAD BEEN NOTIFIED OF A RECALL PERTAINING TO THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. THE RECALL WAS REPORTED ADDRESSED THROUGH SOFTWARE RESET/UPDATE AND EPS LIGHT WAS OFF WHEN I PICKED THE CAR BACK UP. EARLIER THIS MONTH THE EPS LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND I NOTED A BRIEF CLICKING/KNOCKING SOUND WITH TEMPORARY INCREASED RESISTANCE AS I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL IN EITHER DIRECTION BOTH WHILE MOVING OR AT A STOP. THE CAR WAS REASSESSED AT THE DEALERSHIP AUG 23RD, I WAS TOLD THAT AN "INTERNAL FAILURE OF STEERING COLUMN" HAD BEEN IDENTIFIED AND THAT I WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE FULL STEERING ASSEMBLY FOR AN ESTIMATED $2,244.40. I ASKED FOR FURTHER DETAILS REGARDING THE FAILURE AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE STEERING COUPLER NEEDS REPLACEMENT BUT ALSO THAT THE "HOLOGRAM SENSOR" HAS MALFUNCTIONED, NECESSITATING A FULL STEERING ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT, AND THAT THIS IS UNRELATED TO THE PREVIOUSLY SERVICED POWER STEERING RECALL. I HAVE NOT HAD THE REPAIR YET BUT AM WARNED THAT THE CAR IS AT RISK OF UNPREDICTABLE POWER STEERING FAILURE.

I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO WILSON HYUNDAI FOR THE RECALLS TO BE CORRECTED. I WAS ALSO HAVING ISSUES WITH AN AIR BAG LIGHT AND A CLICKING NOISE IN THE STEERING WHEEL. I RECEIVED A CALL TELLING ME MY STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THERE WAS A SHORT IN THE SENSORS TO A MODULE. I WAS THEN TOLD THAT THE SENSOR TO MY PASSENGER SEAT HAD MALFUNCTIONED AND THAT I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE BOTTOM PORTION OF THE SEAT. THEY WERE WANTING TO CHARGE ME OVER $6,000.00 TO REPAIR THESE TWO ISSUES. THERE ARE RECALLS ON BOTH OF THESE ISSUES: NHTSA 15V100000 ADDRESSES ISSUES WITH THE STEERING AND THE FIX DOES NOT INCLUDE OR REQUIRE THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN. THE SOLUTION FOR THIS RECALL IS TO REPROGRAM THE COMPUTER. THIS DOES NOT ADDRESS THE CLICKING NOISE IN THE COLUMN WHERE A GEAR/COG DISINTEGRATES OVER TIME.... A $12.00 PART IS ESTIMATED TO COST OVER $500 IN LABOR TO REPLACE. THE ISSUE WITH THE AIR BAG MALFUNCTIONING IS ADDRESSED IN 2009 HYUNDAI ELANTRA AIR BAGS: FRONTAL: SENSOR/ CONTROL MODULE NHTSA CAMPAIGN #11V143000. MY VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED APRIL 30, 2009 SO THEY DONT WANT TO FIX THE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH IT IS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM ADDRESSED IN RECALL. THE ELECTRONIC STEERING DAMPENER WENT ON MY 2009 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE DEALERSHIP SAID IT HAD BEEN UNDER RECALL BUT THEY ONLY DID A COMPUTER RESET. THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO MAKE A CLICKING NOISE. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC THE NEXT DAY THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. THE RUBBER PART HAD COMPLETELY DISINTEGRATED. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND HYUNDAI WOULD NOT COVER MY 2009 ELANTRA WITH ONLY 36000 MILES ON IT. IT WAS ONLY COVERED FOR 5 YEAR 50000 MILES. THE PICTURE SHOWS THE NEW PART ON THE LEFT AND ON THE RIGHT IS THE OLD PART. THE ACTUAL PART WAS $11.75 BUT LABOR COST 585.00 DUE TO THE ENTIRE FRONT INTERIOR OF THE CAR HAD TO BE REMOVED. I WOULD LIKE A REFUND.

PLEASE NOTE THAT MY VEHICLE HAS ALREADY BEEN SERVICED AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN 15V100000 (HYUNDAI RECALL 127). WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 34-45 MPH, I HEARD A SUBTLE CLICK FROM EITHER MY STEERING COLUMN OR BEHIND THE DASH, WHICH WAS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY ILLUMINATION OF THE EPS WARNING LIGHT AND COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER, AND REMAINED IN THIS CONDITION UNTIL I REACHED MY DESTINATION , WHICH WAS ABOUT ANOTHER 30 MINUTES WORTH OF DRIVING TIME. I IMAGINE THAT SOME YOUNGER/WEAKER DRIVERS MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO PHYSICALLY STEER THE CAR WHILE IN THIS CONDITION, BUT I WAS ABLE TO MANAGE. THE CAR WAS LEFT IN A PARKING LOT FOR ABOUT 8 HOURS, AT WHICH POINT UPON STARTING THE ENGINE, THE EPS WARNING LIGHT TURNED OFF AND POWER STEERING WAS AGAIN FULLY FUNCTIONAL. THE DEALERSHIP SAID MY CAR HAD ALREADY BEEN SERVICED FOR THE POWER STEERING RECALL 127, AND IT WOULD COST $120 TO INVESTIGATE. I DID NOT BRING THE VEHICLE IN FOR THIS DIAGNOSTIC. THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM, AND HAS NOT YET RECURRED.

HYUNDAI ADVISED OUR HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TO COMPLETELY REPLACE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING COLUMN AND EPS COLUMN IN ORDER TO INSURE SAFE DRIVING. THIS COST US $2,260.75 ON A CAR WITH ONLY 28,000 MILES. WE CANNOT BELIEVE THAT HYUNDAI IS NOT STANDING BY ITS PRODUCT AND ONLY DOING "SELECTIVE RECALL". WE AVOIDED A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT WHICH WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN DIRE CONSEQUENCES FOR HYUNDAI. INFORMED ME THAT THE ISSUE, WHICH IS THE COUPLING DEVICE, IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY FROM RECALL. MY STEERING WHEEL NEVER MADE THIS SOUND BEFORE THE RECALL AND IF THIS IS SUCH A COMMON PROBLEM THAT HE'S ABLE TO TELL ME WHAT'S WRONG WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING AT THE CAR, WHY IS IT NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY? DEALERSHIP WANTS 400 DOLLARS TO FIX THE COUPLING DEVICE ON TOP OF THE 110 DOLLARS TO INSPECT IT. LOCAL MECHANIX CHARGED ME 15 DOLLARS TO INSPECT IT AND VERIFIED THAT IT IS THE COUPLING DEVICE. INFORMED ME THAT HE FELT IT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.

I WAS RETURNING HOME ONE EVENING HOME ABOUT A WEEK AGO, AND I WAS TRYING TO PARKING MY CAR IN PARKING LOT WHEN THE ESC LIGHT APPEARED ON DASH BOARD AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. I COULD NOT PARK THE CAR, SO I PUT IT IN PARK AND PULLED OUT THE CAR MANUAL, AFTER READING IT, I TURNED THE IGNITION OFF AND THEN TURN IT BACK ON. I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHEN MY EPS LIGHT CAME ON AND MY POWER STEERING COMPLETELY WENT OUT. AT A STOP LIGHT I TURNED MY CAR OFF AND TURNED IT BACK ON. IN THE LAST 2 WEEKS, THE EPS LIGHT HAS COME ON MY DASHBOARD 3 TIMES, ACCOMPANIED BY THE POWER STEERING FAILING. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED, I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION, TURNING LEFT, AND MY POWER STEERING FAILED. THE SECOND TIME I WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY, LUCKILY NOT YET PULLED OUT INTO THE BUSY STREET ON WHICH I LIVE. THE THIRD TIME WAS JUST TODAY ON THE HIGHWAY, AND AS I WAS GOING 65 MPH, THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE ONLY WAY I'VE FOUND TO "FIX" IT IS TO TURN OFF MY CAR AND START IT AGAIN. HAD I BEEN GOING OVER THE BRIDGE NEAR MY HOUSE WHERE THERE IS NO SHOULDER TO PULL ONTO WHERE I COULD RESTART MY ENGINE, TODAY I WOULD HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO STEER AROUND THE CURVES OF THE HIGHWAY. MARCH 2012 THE EPS INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON AND THE STEERING BECAME VERY DIFFICULT. THIS HAPPENED INTERMITTENTLY AT FIRST, VERY SCARY WHEN DRIVING, AND WOULD SOMETIMES RESOLVE ITSELF IF THE CAR WAS RESTARTED. THE DEALERSHIP PERFORMED AN UPDATE AND REPAIRED A LOOSE CONNECTION, WHICH SEEMED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. IN JAN 2013 THE EPS LIGHT CAME ON & AGAIN STEERING BECAME ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE. THIS TIME THE DEALERSHIP RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE STEERING COLUMN & MOTOR TO THE TUNE OF $2,312. AS THIS IS 1/4 THE TOTAL VALUE OF THE CAR, IT SEEMS ASTRONOMICALLY HIGH. AS A HIGHLY PAID PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER, I CANNOT AFFORD THIS AND AM FORCED TO DRIVE THE CAR AS IT IS. THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING AS THE EPS INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD DIFFICULTY STEERING SO I PULLED OVER AND RESTARTED THE CAR WHICH TEMPORARILY FIXED THE PROBLEM. THE REST OF THE WAY HOME (APPRX 5 MILES) IT STOPPED WORKING ABOUT 6 MORE TIMES. AGAIN THIS MORNING (5/20) ON THE WAY TO WORK IT STOPPED WORKING. EACH TIME IT STOPS I AM ABLE TO TEMPORARILY "FIX IT" BY RESTARTING THE ENGINE. TO BE SAFE I'M KEEPING OFF THE HIGHWAY. PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT MY EPS INDICATOR LIGHT WOULD COME ON PERIODICALLY BUT WITHOUT THE EPS ITSELF FAILING. FRONT END MAKING A NOISE UPON A SLOW TO MEDIUM FRONT OR BACK-UP TURN. ALSO, AT VARIOUS TIMES THE ESP LIGHT CAME ON AND I LOST POWER STEERING(VERY DANGEROUS WHILE ON THE ROAD AT SPEED). ALSO, THE FRONT TIRES WERE WEARING VERY UNEVENLY(REAR TIRES FINE). THEY REPLACED THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR AND STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLY ON 24DEC 2010 WITH MILEAGE AT 35,791. THEY OFFERED TO SELL ME TWO FRONT TIRES, ALIGNMENT AND BALANCE AT A STEEP PRICE, I DECLINED AND HAD MY MECHANIC DO IT FOR LESS. I STRONGLY FEEL THAT THE DEFECT CAUSED MY TIRES TO WEAR OUT TOO SOON. MY DAUGHTER RECEIVED A SHOCK UPON PLACING HER HAND TO THE STEERING WHEEL. THINKING NOTHING OF THIS SHE STARTED THE CAR AND STARTED TO BACK OUT OF THE CAR PORT. WHEN SHE NEEDED TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL IN ORDER TO EXIT THE DRIVEWAY THE STEERING DID NOT MOVE OR RESPOND. LOOKING AT THE DASH, A WARNING LIGHT WAS ON "EPS". THE OWNER'S MANUAL HAD LITTLE TO NOTHING TO SAY ABOUT THE EPS WARNING. I DECIDED TO LOOK AT ALL THE FUSES, FIRST INSIDE THE CAR AND THEN IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. NONE OF THE FUSES WERE BLOWN. I REPLACED THE FUSE COMPARTMENT COVERS AND STARTED THE CAR. THE EPS WARNING LIGHT WENT OUT THIS TIME AND NORMAL STEERING ABILITIES ARE OKAY. WHAT IF THIS "SHOCK" HAD HAPPENED WHEN TRAVELLING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED? IN THE OLD DAYS WHEN POWER STEERING FAILED THE DRIVER COULD STILL TURN THE WHEEL WITH GREAT EFFORT, HOWEVER I COULD NOT EVEN TURN THE STEERING WHEEL 1/2 INCH IN EITHER DIRECTION.
