Unknown but my car shakes and makes a loud grinding noise
My car was recalled by Hyundai for a critical safety issue and has been at the dealership since July of 2024 awaiting repairs due to missing parts. Despite repeated follow-ups, Hyundai has been unable to provide a timeline for the repair. Recently, they offered to buy back the car, but the offer was far below its fair market value. When I declined, they stated they would return the car to me unfixed and unsafe. This situation has caused significant inconvenience and feels coercive, as I am forced to choose between accepting an unfair buyback or taking back an unsafe vehicle. I am seeking NHTSA's assistance to ensure Hyundai repairs the vehicle promptly, investigates their handling of recalls, and protects consumers from being placed in such unfair situations.
UnKnown. When financing the vehicle through Adonis Auto Group I was unaware of the unrepaired safety recall. Also I am under the impression nothing was done to the car before purchasing it, I have had to make repairs to the car only after 10,000 - 15,000 miles of driving. For example replacing the control arm, axle, brake hardware. My point is they are selling cars without repairing them and not advising the customer upon purchase. I also asked for the repair paperwork for what has been done to the car before purchase and never received it.
On February 14, 2023, around 6:30 PM the right front passenger front coil spring broke on my 2011 Hyundai Elantra. I was driving while crossing railroad tracks when the front end dropped down on the right side and the car wouldn’t move. I continued to push the accelerator to get my car off the tracks and on the side of the road- spring cut my tire ripping the inner tire wall. I made several calls to Hyundai (Springfield IL Dealership) and they informed although there was a current recall (number 15V629000) on this issue, I was advised that my VIN did not qualify. The reasoning was that my car's physical address didn’t qualify for the recall. I contested this with appropriate documentation that clearly showed the broken pieces with corrosion. I ended up suffering the cost of the towing bill and replacement of both strut assemblies. In March 2023, I received a recall (campaign - 984) to have an underbody cavity wax and anti-corrosion spray applied to prevent corrosion of components due to road salt. So, as I attempted to point out to Hyundai that my car and perhaps many others were at risk for these potentially fatal risk.
On 8/14/2021 I entered NHTSA complaint number 11429117. This was in regard to a fractured front coil spring in my 2011 Hyundai Elantra. Although there was a current recall (number 15V629000) on this issue, I was advised that my VIN did not qualify. Apparently the reasoning was that my car was built in a different location in Alabama. I contested this with appropriate documention that clearly showed the broken pieces with corrosion. I ended up suffering the cost of replacement of both strut assemblies. As I had to go to an independent shop for my service I sent and escalated my issue through Hyundai to no avail. So now it's March 2023, and I receive a recall (excuse me, campaign - 984) to have an underbody cavity wax and anti corrosion spray applied to prevent corrosion of components due to road salt. So, as I attempted to pont out to Hyundain in 2021, my car and perhaps many others were at risk for these potentially fatal failures. Fortunately my spring broke as I entered my garage. others may not have been so lucky. A break at high speed could take out a tire and that's the ball game. Continuing with the metaphor, Hyundai dropped the ball big time on this.
In 2016 left front coil broke and took damage to tire Hyundai took and replaced it for your charged only one coil was replaced on the car in 2019 the other coil broke customers charged $966.30 to do the repair and replace the tire Hyundai says there's no recall on the springs for this vehicle yet I did find a recall saying there was but they're telling me that the serial numbers was no recall on that
I have had broken shocks and struts on my 2011 Hyundai Elantra Liminted, currently 69000 miles 2 times, once replaced by dealership 2nd done by BIG O Tires in Salt Lake, I did not have a breakdown, my tire blew the first time 12/26/2015, currently was caught by general tire mainainance. This must be some kind of a defect due to have them replace them so often. 2 incidents 12/26/2015 and 10/12/2022. I take very very good care of my car. I have read the issues of prior. The rear suspension crossmember fractured allowing the lower suspension arm to move causing the wheel to move out at the bottom by a considerable amount. I noticed it after a short local trip. I think if I had continued driving the lower arm may have completely disconnected resulting in potential loss of control. The crossmember has significant corrosion in this area but the component should be thick enough to allow for this. The car is at my home address therefore has not been inspected by a dealer. I have contacted them and the manufacturer and neither offer any help.
Spring coil on strut broke off on passengers side of car. Sliced tired while driving. A couple years after getting that side repaired same exact thing happened on the driver's side.
The front subframe / crossmember has prematurely corroded at suspension mounting points. The control arm mount has rusted completely through resulting in the bottom half of the control arm mount becoming unstable and the control arm is at risk of full detachment.
My daughter was driving my 2011 Hyundai Elantra and she got a flat tire on the drivers side front. Upon inspection, I discovered that the front strut spring had fractured and part of it went through the sidewall of the tire. Found out that there is a recall for this exact problem for certain 2011 Elantras. Called the Hyundai customer service line and was told that this particular Elantra was not part of the recall. Why not? The recall is to replace springs that, because of corrosion caused by road salt used in winter in certain states (my state NJ being one of the states affected), fracture and puncture the tires. This is EXACTLY what happened to this vehicle. I am working on getting Hyundai to make repairs but I don't have much hope.
2011 Hyundai Elantra. Driver side coil spring fractured. I had both front struts/springs replaced. I have all parts. This is a safety issue as the missing piece can cause the vehicle to lose control. Fortunately mine broke as I entered my garage. As my local dealer could not see my car for 7-10 days, I opted for local repair. I brought my documentation and parts to my local dealer for validation. Before I did anything, I verified that there was a recall on this exact issue (number 15V629000). My VIN did not appear nor was I ever notified of the recall. I then began to chase Hyundai for reimbursement. I will attach my communications with them. Basically I was denied as the VIN was not on the list and I was further told that they do not reimburse for non dealer repairs which is incorrect, as I started my process on their campaign website which addresses reimbursement.

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID 15V629000; DATE: OCT. 7, 2015 IF A FRONT COIL SPRING FRACTURES, IT MAY CONTACT THE TIRE, POSSIBLY PUNCTURING IT, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH...AND WANTED TO UPDATE SINCE I HAVE SINCE CONTACTED HYUNDAI. THIS WAS THEIR REPLY: CAMPAIGNS AND RECALLS ARE VIN SPECIFIC, THEREFORE, YOUR 2011 ELANTRA MAY HAVE BEEN PRODUCED IN THE SAME TIME PERIOD AS THE AFFECTED VEHICLES BUT AT A DIFFERENT FACTORY. NOT ALL ELANTRA'S FOR THIS TIME PERIOD WERE RECALLED. ONLY THE AFFECTED VIN'S. MY VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED DURING THE AFFECTED DATES, BUT THEY ARE APPARENTLY ONLY VIN SPECIFIC. MY CONCERN IS THAT I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND THE COIL SPRING FRACTURED...IF OTHERS OUTSIDE THE VIN SPECIFIC ARE ALSO EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM MAYBE THEY NEED TO EXPAND THE RECALL FOR THIS POTENTIALLY DEADLY PROBLEMS AND WOULD LIKE TO WARN OTHERS TO GET THIS CHECKED EVEN THOUGH HYUNDAI WILL NOT COVER THE PROBLEM.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE REVERSING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE STRUT SPRING FRACTURED AND PUNCTURED THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE TIRE. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRONT STRUT RODS WERE DAMAGED AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 240,000.

WHILE DRIVING MY HUSBAND HEARD A LOUD POP. IMMEDIATELY THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE WENT FLAT WHICH CAUSED SEVERE LOSS OF CONTROL. THANKFULLY HE WAS ON A LOCAL ROAD WITH NO OTHER CARS AT THE TIME. APPARENTLY A COIL SPRING FRACTURED OFF AND SLASHED THE TIRE. THIS SPRING STILL LOOKED BRAND NEW YET IT JUST SHEERED OFF WHICH MUST BE SOME TYPE OF DEFECT IN MANUFACTURING OF THE PART. WHILE RESEARCHING THIS I FOUND A RECALL #107096 FOR SUSPENSION FRONT SPRING COIL YET MY 2011 ELANTRA DOES NOT SHOW UP FOR THIS RECALL? THIS DEFECT IN THE SPRING COIL COULD HAVE CAUSED CATASTROPHIC EFFECTS IF WE WERE DRIVING FASTER ON HIGHWAY. I HAVEN'T YET BEEN ABLE TO CONTACT HYUNDAI IN REGARDS TO THIS YET BUT YOU SHOULD BE AWARE....THIS DEFECT WHICH COULD BE DEADLY DEPENDING ON THE CIRCUMSTANCES. I NOW HAVE TO PAY $1000 TO REPAIR THE STRUTS AND COILS ON BOTH SIDES. I'M NOT SURE WHY HYUNDAI HAS NOT RECALLED ALL CARS, BUT THIS MUST BE ADDRESSED FOR SAFETY.

ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC, RUST ON MY COIL SPRING CAUSED IT TO FRACTURE WHILE DRIVING AND PUNCTURE MY TIRE. MY MECHANIC SAID IT WAS "CRAZY" BECAUSE THERE WAS A FRESH FRACTURE FROM IT "SNAPPING". I DID SOME RESEARCH AND IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE HYUNDAI RECALL #133. THIS RECALL INVOLVED RUSTING OF THE COIL SPRING TO 2011 HYUNDAI ELANTRAS IN STATES THAT USE SALT FOR SNOW REMOVAL, SUCH AS MINNESOTA. I LIVE IN MN, SO I CALLED HYUNDAI TO SEE IF MY CAR WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THEY SAID IT WAS NOT. I AM WONDERING IF IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONSIDERING THERE WERE KNOWN AND SIMILAR ISSUES WITH OTHER VEHICLES OF THE SAME YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL IN MINNESOTA. WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND FELT SOMETHING RUBBING THE TIRE. TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC AND HE SAID THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT COIL SPRING BROKE AND DUG A GROOVE IN THE TIRE. HAD IT REPLACED AND NOTICED THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS YEAR MAKE AND MODEL. IT WAS FOR VIN NUMBERS THAT STARTED WITH KMHD WHICH MINE DOES. I CALLED HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CARE AND THEY SAID IT WASN'T FOR MY SPECIFIC VIN NUMBER. I EXPLAINED THAT IT WAS SAME VEHICLE AND NOT JUST COINCIDENCE THAT IT'S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED AS IN THE RECALL. THEY TOLD ME TO SUBMIT A BUNCH OF DOCUMENTS SHOWING REPAIR BILL, PROOF OF PAYMENT AND PROOF OF OWNERSHIP AND HAVE THE REPAIR INSPECTED BY A HYUNDAI DEALER. AFTER JUMPING THROUGH ALL THESE HOOPS FOR POSSIBLE REIMBURSEMENT, I WAS TOLD THEY WONT REIMBURSE BECAUSE IT'S VIN SPECIFIC. (THEN WHY DID THEY MAKE ME GO THROUGH ALL THAT?) IF THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN DRIVEN MUCH LONGER IT WOULD HAVE PUNCTURED THE TIRE. FURTHERMORE IF MY SON HAD BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY DOING 55MPH AND THAT HAPPENED, I BELIEVE IT WOULD HAVE VEERED THE CAR INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THE FRONT SUSPENSION COIL SPRINGS SNAPPED AND RUPTURED BOTH MY FRONT TIRES. IT SEEMS THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS GET BRITTLE IN THE WINTER AND ACTUALLY SPLINTERED OFF WHEN THEY SNAPPED, THIS CAUSED THE RUPTURE TO MY TIRES. I WAS VERY LUCKY TO HAVE BEEN IN A PARKING GARAGE, GOING FIVE MPH, WHEN THE DAMAGE HAPPENED. IT WAS MERELY CAUSED BY DRIVING DOWN A PARKING RAMP. SO, IT WASN'T CAUSED BY SOME TREMENDOUS TRAUMA TO THE CAR OR ACCIDENT. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE, AND NOW EACH SIDE WILL CAUSE $1036.00 TO FIX (BECAUSE I HAVE TO REPLACE EACH SIDE TIRE AS WELL). THE ISSUE WOULD HAVE BEEN EXACERBATED HAD I BEEN ON A HIGHWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED, AND COULD HAVE BEEN VERY DANGEROUS.

I HAD ALREADY OPENED A CASE AND WAS WORKING WITH A DAVID BAKER 11131845. HE HAD ASKED ME TO TRY TO LOCATE THE PIECE OF BROKEN SPRING THAT PUNCTURED MY TIRE. I WAS ABLE TO LOCATE THAT BUT ONCE I EMAILED DAVID I RECEIVED AN EMAIL BACK SAYING THAT HIS EMAIL ADDRESS WAS NO LONGER ACTIVE. THE MECHANICAL INSPECTION FINDINGS WERE AS FOLLOWS: FLAT TIRE ON FRONT PASSENGER SIDE RIPPED OFF THE RIM CAUSE BY FRACTURED COIL SPRING. NEW ENGLAND TIRE REPLACED THE STRUTS/COIL SPRINGS AND TIRE. THE TOTAL BILL WAS $1,400.99. ON JULY 5TH, 2018, I DISCOVERED THAT HYUNDAI PREFORMED A SAFETY RECALL ON 28,157 CARS WITH THE SAME ISSUE THAT OCCURRED TO MY VEHICLE. I WAS TRAVELING TO MEMPHIS, TN. THE REAR END OF THE CAR WOULD CONSTANTLY JERK OUT TOT THE LEFT WHEN I WOULD HIT BUMPS. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES, AND WAS TOLD THIS WAS A NORMAL REACTION FOR THIS KIND OF SUSPENSION. HYUNDAI MECHANIC, [XXX], CLAIMED THAT THE SHAKING OF THE REAR SUSPENSION IS A "NORMAL" FEATURE FOR ALL HYUNDAI ELANTRAS DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE "REAR DRIVE TRAIN IS A SOLID PLATFORM NOT INDEPENDENT." THIS WAS THE CERRITOS HYUNDAI'S TECHNICIANS EXACT STATEMENT FOR MY CAR'S MALFUNCTION. I PROVIDED PROPER DOCUMENTATION FROM A PROFESSIONAL MECHANIC, ROBERT VELIS FROM RENNSTAR MOTORS, STATING THAT MY HYUNDAI ELANTIC HAS "ERRATIC DIRECTIONAL STABILITY AT THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AT SPEED BUMPS." THIS "NORMAL" FEATURE NOT ONLY IS UNSETTLING BUT CAUSES UNDO STRESS TO THE DRIVER CAUSING DISTRACTIONS WHEN DRIVING. THIS VEHICLE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A ROAD HAZARD, AND I BELIEVE THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS UNSETTLING FEATURE. I HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH MY HYUNDAI ELANTRA 2011 TIRES CONTIPRO R17. FIRST INCIDENT HAPPENED WHEN I HIT A 4 INCH POTHOLE AND FOR SOME REASON THE AIR ESCAPED THE TIRE AND HAD TO CALL A TOW IN TRUCK. THE DEALER REPLACED MY TIRE FOR ONLY $321 (AM I LUCKY HA HA). NOW IT IS OCTOBER AND ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH THE BACK PASSENGER TIRE HIT A MUCH SMALLER POTHOLE AND THE TIRE BLEW OUT. WHAT IS GOING ON? THESE TIRES ARE MADE OUT OF BUBBLE GUM. MY FORD CONTOUR 1997 DROVE THROUGH THE GRAND CANYON AND TIRES LASTED FOR 80 THOUSAND MILES WITH NO PROBLEMS. I HOPE THEY REPLACE THOSE THINGS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT....... THANKS *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE COLLAPSED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE LOWER BALL JOINT FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,000.
