We went to a dealership to get it inspected due to a knocking noise in the engine. They used a tool and said it was most likely cylinder 3 piston slap. There was an issue with this according to Hyundai in the past. This puts my wife at risk because if it ends up blowing up, it could send shrapnel through the motor or cause her to wreck her vehicle if it happens while driving. This was diagnosed by a local dealership. No engine light is on at the time. This started a few weeks ago. The car is around 132,000 miles. Thank you!

I went to start my car and it would not turn over. All the lights were on, the vehicle wouldn't move out of park, and the security system kept going off. The last time this happened I had the starter replaced and the neutral safety switch and it was fine for a bit but now it's happened again. This is at least the 3rd time I've had this issue. Please help! I know I'm not the only one. I had to have AAA come and pick my car up and bring it to a garage.

I was driving my 2012 Hyundai Elantra and it suddenly stopped. I took it to be checked out and it has an excessive oil consumption issue which can cause engine failure or a fire. Hyundai refuses to acknowledge the issue or fix it. After doing some research I see that this is a common problem with this car. I have to check my oil every 1000 miles and many times less than that and refill it. They should be held responsible and fix the issue. There should also have been a recall considering not only how dangerous this is, but also how many people are experiencing this.

The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V651000 (Service Brakes Hydraulic) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. Parts distribution disconnect.

Since day 1. Brakes have failed. First recall took years. They “updated my software “ brakes still failed. They failed to believe me “Couldn’t find a problem “ there’s no warning lights no nothing. Out of nowhere. The Brake goes to the floor. Makes a grinding sound and your either going towards on coming traffic or a ditch. Brakes failed at numerous intersections. How I’m alive is beyond me. The best part, either the seat belt is too baggy or strangles you there’s no in between. My entire steering system is junk. wasted money on tires alignments brake pads brake censors. Dealership has another recall on these brakes with no remedy. I’ve sadly driven this car over 10 years with failing brakes. I drive with my right hand on the e brake ready to yank it at any given times. I’m honestly traumatized by this car. Engine and transmission are junk. Nightmare

There were no injuries and no police or fire report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. On [XXX], I was driving on the left lane of [XXX], between [XXX] , traveling [XXX], in Oakland, California. I had only driven for a few minutes after leaving work. After braking at a stoplight, my 2012 Hyundai Elantra stopped functioning and stopped on the road while driving. The "check engine" light went on, the "check battery" light went on and a "check fluid" light all went on at the same time for over 10 minutes. During those 10 minutes, I was unable to start the car. I put my hazard lights on and desperately called 911 and AAA. I continued to try and re-start the car. After 10-15 minutes, I was able to get the car started and pulled off the road. I was later able to drive home. I later had the car evaluated by a mechanic and he could not find a reason for my experience. The battery was replaced within the last 6 months, oil was changed recently and an engine coil was recently replaced. We get the car repaired/serviced regularly. I strongly suspect that my experience is related to Hyundai Recall 251 / NHTSA Recall 23V651000. This is a very serious safety issue (e.g. "engine could catch on fire while driving or parked...") and Hyundai has so far not been appropriately responsive about my safety concerns. The Recall was issued in September of 2023 and no remedy has been issued to date (as of 2/16/24). Hyundai owners should not be expected to just keep driving cars that are at risk of randomly catching fire while driving or ceasing to function while driving on a busy road. On April 23rd when traveling from Jamestown, NY to to Fredonia, NY my car started and it seemed to be running rough. I shut the car off, and restarted it. It still seem to idle differently. Drove home, stopped I planned to stop to see my youngest daughter who resides at [XXX] 600 feet away from driveway, car began to chug and the engine light came on. I put on the Hazard lights and pulled to the side of the road. A pick up truck behind me was speeding up on me, he then swerved, and crossed the line into oncoming traffic. Breaks were screeching I was terrified there was going to be an accident. Called AAA, car was towed to Ralph's Penzoil in Dunkirk. Ralph replaced the coils. The car no longer chugged, the engine light was not on, but it sounded extremely loud, like a Diesel Tractor. Ralph said it was a hole in the muffler. I brought the car for a second opinion to Arkwright Towing and Larry said it was engine noise. Either the bearings or camshaft. He said there was no repair, I would either have to replace the engine or sell the vehicle. He cautioned against replacement as this model and make of Hyundai has had many engine recalls and problems. I then stopped driving the vehicle and used my mother's vehicle, as she no longer is driving after being discharged from the hospital. I finally had the chance to take the car to Hyundai Shultz in Lakewood, NY. I had brought the car there a few months prior, because it seemed to be running loud, especially in the morning. The Service department fixed a few recalls, but noted nothing wrong with the way the engine sounded. At this time the Hyundai dealership in Lakewood, Shultz my car continues to sit. Hyundai USA has refused to help replace the engine, as they state I do not have an extended warranty. While there have been hundreds of engine safety recalls on this make and model, just not 2012. Engine shuts off sporatically, sometimes 4 times in an hour of driving at low speeds. I could easily be rear ended in light traffic when the engine turns off. The problem has not been confirmed by anyone. I've Google the problem on different forums and many Elantra owners are experiencing the same problem. There are no warnings

This report was submitted PREVIOUSLY on April 5, 2023 with no response received by me: My 2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited engine began making a tapping/ticking noise a few years ago. The noise became louder and then I discovered that my car qualified for the EXTENDED POWERTRAIN WARRANTY which was granted to any 2011-2016 Hyundai Elantra owner with 1.8L Nu Engine that a class action lawsuit brought against Hyundai Motor Corporation. I was never notified by Hyundai but rather a mechanic that I brought my car to that was aware of the campaign. I contacted Hyundai and was told to have the engine diagnosed by my local Hyundai Dealer. The results of the diagnosis were submitted to the Hyundai Motors Corporation Warranty department and my claim was denied as I was told that my mileage and years were past the qualifying criteria. I had brought my 2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited to the Hyundai dealership that I had purchased the car as certified used Hyundai in 2014 for the engine diagnosis to determine if the engine noise was related to the Extended Powertrain Warranty granted to owners of any 2011-2016 Hyundai Elantra with 1.8L Nu Engine. The borescope results and photos were sent to the Hyundai Motors Corporation Warranty department and it was confirmed that my engine did indeed have the "piston slap" problem as outlined in the class action lawsuit and all four cylinders were severely scored. Upon contacting Hyundai to request the borescope video and photos that I had paid $200 to the Hyundai dealership service department for the diagnosis, I was told if i wanted the video and photos I would have to hire an attorney to obtain them from the Hyundai warranty Department! I was never notified of this "secret" campaign! Needless to say I am extremely unhappy about this. I deserve to have this engine fixed under the extended warranty that Hyundai failed to notify me about. This is UNREAL! Please tell me what can be done here. Thank you, Douglas E Stevens

Please find below a description of the malfunction in my Hyundai Elantra, as this is the reason I'm requesting inclusion in a recall. Since the week of Thanksgiving 2022, I've had several instances of my vehicle stalling without warning before engaging the transmission; for example, my car once stopped moving completely on the freeway while entering the onramp at 55 mph. Since then, the problem has only gotten worse, stalling up to seven or nine times per week. Because of the severity of this issue, I’ve had it inspected multiple times and would gladly submit it to another one if requested. Obviously, a defect of this magnitude with no obvious cause not only puts me at risk as the driver, as I can’t prepare for a sudden stop, but all road travelers around me are also subject to this issue. As you know, a sudden halt could lead to collusion involving numerous people. To date, an independent service provider has not been able to identify the issue or recreate the problem, as it occurs randomly with no warning lights or signals to prepare me for what’s about to happen. The contact was informed that an oil change was needed. The oil change was performed; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was contacted and notified of the failure. The manufacturer referred the contact to the dealer for assistance since the vehicle was not under recall for the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000. The consumer stated that their Hyundai was still under 100,000 warranty.

Car has been properly maintained for years. No accidents or known major issues. Suddenly the car would not start one workday morning. The tow truck driver was unable to start the car; towed car to repair location. Nationally known major service station said the car was low on oil, they filled with 2 quarts. No prior oil problems, no oil or engine idiot light on dashboard was lit, no oil puddles/stains. Car returned to owner, on short drive home, the engine trouble idiot light turned on. Used code reader to find P0014 - cam shaft positioning error code. Brought to local service station, was told car needs a new engine. No outstanding recalls. Recent newspaper article stated there have been problems with 2012 Hyundai Elantra engines. Maybe locked engine is related to other known issues?

All of these issues occur in any weather or if the car is warmed up or not. They don’t occur all the time but about half the time. -From a standing stop (like when entering an intersection or turning on to a road) lightly pressing on gas pedal will get car moving then in 2-3 seconds it will stall out for 2 or 3 seconds, almost to the point of the engine stopping. At that point, moderately pressing on the gas again will cause the car to accelerate suddenly & forcefully. It is terrifying when a car is coming at you & you don’t know if it’s going to start accelerating or just die. -Driving and maneuvering in a parking lot is quite a risky adventure. At these slow speeds the car will randomly stall, lurch, hesitate & accelerate suddenly & forcefully with just a light touch on the gas pedal. Not the best performance when trying to park or maneuver around closely packed cars. -I have taken the car to the dealership at least 5 times to remedy this problem & they either said this behavior was not detectable or it was operating as designed. I have documentation consisting of service invoices. They obviously weren’t being truthful, considering the Recall & Class Action Lawsuit that has subsequently been issued dealing with this issue, revealing that HYUNDAI knew about this problem. Can I finally get my car to operate properly & SAFELY? 2012 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SURGED FORWARD WHILE BEING DRIVEN 1-2 MPH OUT OF A PARKING LOT. THE CONSUMER STATED THE BRAKES WERE DEPRESSED, BUT FAILED. THE VEHICLE WENT OVER A PARKING SPOT BARRICADE, INTO A FEILD, AND CRASHED INTO A BOLDER. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONSUMER WENT INTO SHOCK. SUFFERED A CUT ON THE HAND REQUIRING STITCHES. THE CONSUMER SUFFERED AN AUTO IMMUNE DISEASE, SEVERE BODY PAINS, AND DEVELOPED INFLAMMATION REQUIRING TREATMENT WITH PREDNISONE.

JUST BOUGHT THE CAR A COUPLE WEEKS AGO FOR MY DAUGHTER. THE CAR WAS PARKED IN A PARKING LOT AND WOULD NOT START. TRIED JUMPING IT. CHANGED BATTERY IN KEY. GAS TANK WAS FULL. FINALLY LOOKED ON INTERNET AND FINALLY LOOKED ON LINE AND FOUND A LOT OF OTHERS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY SAID TO PUSH THE CAR FROM THE REAR. WE DID AND IT STARTED. AFRAID MY DAUGHTER WILL BE STUCK AT NIGHT LEAVING WORK.

MY 2012 HYUNDAI ELANTRA WOULD STALL AT STOP SIGNS AND LIGHTS. IT WOULD STOP AND START AGAIN.. I WENT TO HYUNDAI TO CHECK IT OUT AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP. THE NEXT DAY I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND TURNING OFF THE HIGHWAY MY CAR STALLED OUT AND WHEN I TRIED TO PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD THE BRAKES WERE HARD TO PRESS. USING ALL MY WEIGHT I GOT IT TO COME TO A STOP. IT WOULD NOT CRANK. I TRIED ABOUT THREE TIMES TO CRANK IT WHILE HOLDING DOWN THE GAS. IT EVENTUALLY ALLOWED ME TO CHANGE GEARS REALLY QUICK AND TAKE OFF. I MADE IT 5 MINUTES DOWN THE ROAD TO THE HOUSE BUT IT STALLED AS I PARKED. NOW IT WON'T CRANK AT ALL. FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS I'VE BEEN TRYING TO CRANK IT. I'VE HAD THE FUEL PUMP, THE SPARK PLUGS, THE CAMSHAFT SENSOR, AND THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR CHANGED AND IT STILL ISN'T CRANKING

A FEW WEEKS AGO, I WAS DRIVING MY 2012 HYUNDAI ELANTRA (114,000 MILES ON IT) AND IT STARTED TO SPUTTER AND I COULD NOT ACCELERATE ABOVE 20 MPH AND ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THERE HAD BEEN A SIMILAR INTERMITTENT PROBELM PRIOR TO THIS. I HAD IT TOWED TO MY DEALER AND ENDED UP WITH A REPLACED COIL PACK ON ONE CYLINDER. ON 11/4/20, I WAS RUN OFF THE INTERSTATE BY A SEMI BECAUSE AS I ENTERED THE HIGHWAY, I COULD NOT ACCELERATE BEYOND 20, AND THEN 40 MPH AND THE TACOMETER REGISERED 0. I TOOK CAR BACK TO DEALER WHERE THEY SAID THAT THE "TECH RESET ADAPT.VALUES" ("VALVES" IS WHAT THEY TOLD ME VERBALLY). WELL I LEFT WITH THE CAR AFTER THE SUPPOSED "FIX" AND 1/2 MILE FROM THE DEALERSHIP, THE SAME DE-ACLLERATION OCCURED, AND THIS TIME WHEN I WENT BACK TO DEALERSHIP THE MANAGER HAD THE TECH RUN THE DIAGNOSTICS ON ORIGINAL PROBLEM ON HIS IPAD AND TECH SAID THE COIL PACK WAS FINE. THE MANAGER THEN HAD THE TECH RUN ALL SYSTEM COMPUTER CHECKS AND THE SECOND TIME AROUND, AN ERROR POINTED TO THE CRANKSHAFT SO THEY RAN ALL THE COMPUTER UPDATES, WHICH TOOK A GOOD 20 MINUTES, AND SAID THAT LIKELY FIXED THE ISSUE. I THOUGHT THE ISSUE WAS FIXED BUT TODAY, TWO DAYS LATER, I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND THE ENGINE JUST STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I RESTARTED THE CAR AND DROVE IT A FEW MILES AND I NOTICED AGAIN THAT THE TACOMETER WAS NOT WORKING. THIS IS THE 4TH TIME I HAD TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. I ASKED THEM WHY THEY DIDN'T RUN UPDATES WHEN THE CAR IS IN FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND HE SAID THEY ONLY DO SO WHEN A PROBLEM IS NOTED. THE INITIAL ISSUE ALMOST GOT ME KILLED ON THE HIGHWAY. AND ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP, OTHER DRIVERS OF HYUNDAI VEHICLES ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. SOMEONE WILL BE KILLED IF THIS SAFETY ISSUE ISN'T RESOLVED. THE ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED AS OF TODAY, 11/6/2020 REGARDLESS OF WHAT PRIOR SVC REPORTS UPLOAD STATES.

FOR THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS I HAVE HAD A REOCCURRING ISSUE WITH MY 2012 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. ABOUT 1-3 TIMES A WEEK, MY CAR WILL NOT START. ALL LIGHTS, RADIO, ETC. WORK FINE WHEN KEY IS TURNED TO ON/START POSITION BUT CAR WILL NOT START. IT MAKES ONE CLICK SOUND AND THEN NOTHING. GENERALLY, IF I KEEP TRYING IT WILL EVENTUALLY START. SOMETIMES IT TAKES 10 MINUTES AND SOMETIMES IT TAKES A FEW HOURS. ALONG WITH THIS, ABOUT ONCE A WEEK MY CAR WILL SHIFT GEARS HARD. IT IS AN AUTOMATIC AND OTHERWISE SHIFTS FINE. I HAVE HAD ROUTINE MAINTENANCE COMPLETED ON TIME SINCE I BOUGHT THIS CAR IN 2016. I HAVE BROUGHT MY CAR TO MY MECHANIC SEVERAL TIMES IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS AND HE CANNOT DETERMINE THE PROBLEM SINCE THE CAR DOES NOT DO THIS REGULARLY. I READ ONLINE THAT IT COULD BE THE NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH (RANGE INHIBITOR) SO I REPLACED THAT. THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. I CONTACTED THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP FROM WHICH I PURCHASED MY CAR AND THEY HAVE NO ANSWERS.

THERE WAS A LOUD RYTHMIC CLICKING AND EACH TIME IT CLICKED ALL THE ELECTRONICS FLICKERED. JUMPING THE BATTERY DID NOT WORK.

THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. MY TIRE WAS FLAT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN A DESERT AND I TURNED THE CAR OFF TO CHANGE MY TIRE. I TRIED TO START MY VEHICLE AND ALL ACCESSORIES TURN ON AND THE CAR UNLOCKS WITH THE ELECTRIC KEY FOB BUT THE CAR DOESN'T START. INHIBITOR SWITCH IS BAD IS FAULTY. I TOOK MY CAR TO HYUNDAI OF SOUTH BRUNSWICK NJ ON 7/3/19 NO ONE CALLED ME UNTIL 7/9/19 I CALLED EVERYDAY 3-4 TIMES A DAY AND KEPT BEING TRANSFERED TO LEAVE VOICE MAILS, I LEFT MESSAGES AND NO ONE CALLED ME BACK. THEY BOTH TOLD ME SEPARATELY THAT ONE OF THE PISTONS IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY AND IN ORDER TO FIX THIS ISSUE I HAVE TO HAVE MY ENGINE REPLACED.I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THIS IS A 'KNOWN ISSUE' WITH ELANTRAS 2012-16. THEY LOOKED AT IT AND FINALLY TOLD ME THAT IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND IT WILL COST ME $8000 TO PUT A NEW ENGINE AND ABOUT $4000 OR SO TO REPLACE WITH USED ENGINE. IN RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM ONLINE I AM NOT ALONE IN MY PAIN! SHAME ON HYUNDAI YOUR CAR SHOULD BE PLACED IN THE LEAST WANTED LIST! I WOULDN'T PURCHASE ANOTHER HYUNDAI IF IT COST ONE CENT! THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 97,500.

I REPLACED THE IGNITION COILS AND IGNITION PLATE WAS CLEANED. PROBLEM WAS NOT RESOLVED. MECHANIC CANNOT IDENTIFY THE DEFECT. I SELL CARS FULL TIME (OUR DEALERSHIP OWNS 2 HYUNDAI STORES), AND I ALSO OWN ANOTHER 2013 ELANTRA THAT I DRIVE PRESENTLY. OUR SERVICE DEPT TOOK APART THE ENGINE (ON THE 2012) TO FIND METAL SHAVINGS WHICH LED TO THE DIAGNOSIS THAT I NEED A NEW ENGINE. MY SON IS 2000 MILES OUT OF HIS EXTENDED WARRANTY, AND HYUNDAI, NOR THE WARRANTY COMPANY IS EAGER TO FIX IT. I WAS TOLD BY OUR SERVICE DEPT THAT IN THE LAST MONTH AND A HALF, 5 ELANTRAS CAME IN WITH THE SAME PROBLEM NEEDING NEW ENGINES AND HYUNDAI WOULDN'T REPLACE. HYUNDAI STATES THEY ARE NOT GOING TO DO A RECALL, EVEN THOUGH THIS IS BECOMING A BIGGER AND BIGGER UNIVERSAL PROBLEM WITH ELANTRA OWNERS. THE TICKING IS LOUDEST WHEN RUNNING COLD, AND/OR IN COLD WEATHER. (CAR IS IN OHIO). METAL SHAVINGS FROM THE ENGINE FOUND IN THE OIL IS NOT A 'NORMAL' ISSUE. ALL OIL CHANGES FOR THIS CAR HAS BEEN DONE AT A DEALERSHIP SINCE MY STEPFATHER BOUGHT THIS CAR. UPON HIS DEATH, THE CAR HAD 111,000 MILES WHEN THE TITLE WAS TRANSFERRED TO ME. COLD WEATHER WAS APPROACHING AND I WANTED TO GET AN OIL CHANGE DONE. THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT GET ME IN FOR A WEEK AND EVEN CANCELLED AN APPOINTMENT I HAD TO I WENT TO EXHAUST PRO. WHEN THE TEMPERATURE GOT TO 20 BELOW ZERO WIND CHILL THE ENGINE STARTED TICKING. I TOOK THE CAR TO DEALERSHIP AND HAD THEM CHANGE OIL BUT THE TICKING PERSISTED. I TOOK THE CAR TO DEALERSHIP TO INQUIRE ABOUT TICKING NOISE AND WAS INFORMED THERE ARE METAL SHAVINGS IN OIL AND ENGINE NEEDS REPLACED COSTING $9400. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE 2012 AND 2013 ELANTRA BUT NO RECALL HAS BEEN DONE LIKE THE SONATA. I FEEL THAT HYUNDAI SHOULD REPLACE THE ENGINE AT NO COST TO ME. IT MAY NOT BE UNDER WARRANTY ANYMORE BUT HYUNDAI KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM AND THEY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AND NOT THE CONSUMER.

MY STEERING IS LOOSE AND THE WHEEL CLUNKS AND RATTLES. SOMETIMES IT FEELS LIKE THE STEERING WHEEL WILL COME RIGHT OFF. MY HYUNDAI DEALER REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP/ASSEMBLY ($700) AND IT SEEMED TO GET WORSE.FAILURE TO ACCELERATE AS EXPECTED IS A DANGER IF YOU ARE TRYING TO ENTER A BUSY HIGHWAY OR TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF ANOTHER SPEEDING VEHICLE. THIS SEEMS TO OCCUR AT SPEEDS UP TO 65 MPH WHEN STEPPING ON THE GAS. THIS HAPPENS ON A REGULAR BASIS BUT NOT EVERY DAY.

IT WAS INSPECTED BY A HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPARTMENT IN AUGUST OF THIS YEAR AFTER MAKING A KNOCKING NOISE AND STALLING CONTINUALLY. IT WAS DIAGNOSED BY THE HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPARTMENT WITH THE SAME EXACT ISSUE THE SONATA HAS WHICH IS COVERED IN THE CLASS ACTION SUIT, BUT OUR DEALERS REQUEST FOR A NEW SHORT BLOCK WAS DENIED BY HYUNDAI. THERE ARE METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL VALVE, AND ALSO IN THE OIL PAN CAUSED BY SHEARING FROM THE CRANKSHAFT. THERE APPEAR TO BE OTHERS WITH THE SAME CRANKSHAFT ISSUE THAT OWN ELANTRA MODELS AS WELL. PLEASE SEE ABOVE ATTACHMENTS. MY CONCERN IS THAT THE SAME FAULTY DEBURRING PROCESS THAT WAS USED ON THE SONATA'S CRANK SHAFT MAY HAVE ALSO BEEN USED ON CERTAIN ELANTRA'S DURING THE SAME TIMEFRAME. MY CAR IS STILL UNDER THE 5 YEAR WARRANTY. HYUNDAI OF AMERICA WILL NOT REPAIR OR REPLACE MY ENGINE BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE ALL MY OIL AND MAINTENANCE RECEIPTS. OUR 2012 ELANTRA BEGAN MAKING KNOCKING SOUNDS DURING COLD STARTS. THE NOISE WAS FAINTER WHEN THE ENGINE WAS WARM BUT NEVER DISAPPEARED COMPLETELY. THE SOUND BECAME LOUDER WHEN THE WEATHER WAS COLDER. WHEN I ORIGINALLY TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER, I TOLD THEM THAT I THOUGHT THE PROBLEM MAY HAVE BEEN THE TIMING BELT BUT WAS INFORMED THAT THE 2012 HAD A TIMING CHAIN AND NOT A BELT. WHEN THE NOISE BECAME TOO LOUD, I FINALLY TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK OF THE ENGINE AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A DEFECTIVE CONNECTING ROD BEARING AND A NEW ENGINE WAS NECESSARY. I AM AWARE THAT THE 2011-2013 SONATA WAS RECALLED IN 2015 FOR THE SAME PROBLEM BUT THOUGHT THAT THE ELANTRA WAS EXEMPT.

PRIOR TO THIS MY VEHICLE HAD BEEN AT RICK CASE HYUNDAI 3 TIMES WITH ME COMPLAINING THE TRANSMISSION WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY THE 1ST TIME I WAS TOLD THERE ARE NO CODES SO WE HAVE TO WAIT TILL IT BREAKS, THE 2ND TIME I WAS TOLD NO CODES SORRY, AND THE THIRD TIME THEY ACTUALLY REPLACED A BROKEN PART THAT CONTROLS THE SHIFT TIMES IN THE TRANSMISSION. COULD SHOW THEM MY PROBLEM. I ASKED HYUNDAI CORPORATE TO DO AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE TRANSMISSION AND THE FIRE AND HELP ME RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. THEY WENT THROUGH THEIR 6 WEEK PROCESS AND THEN DENIED MY CLAIM SAYING IT WASN'T FOUND TO BE A MALFUNCTION OF ANY PARTS THAT CAUSED THE FIRE. I HAVE VIDEO OF WHERE THE FIRE STARTED, THE TRANSMISSION NOT WORKING, AND COUNTLESS PICTURES THAT SHOW THE FIRE OBVIOUSLY STARTED AT THE TAILPIPE DUE TO AN INCREASE IN TEMPERATURE BECAUSE OF THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE. WHEN I ASK HYUNDAI FOR THE INFORMATION THAT LEAD TO THEIR CONCLUSION THEY SAY IT'S CONFIDENTIAL AND PROPRIETARY AND WILL NOT LET ME SEE IT. WHEN I TELL THEM THE TRANSMISSION IS STILL NOT WORKING AND EVERYTIME I DRIVE IT THERE IS A BURNING SMELL AND I'M SCARED FOR MY SAFETY AND LIFE DRIVING THIS CAR THEY JUST SAY HYUNDAIS DECISION IS FINAL AND THEY WON'T HONOR MY WARRANTY ON THE CAR. THEY CLAIM IT'S PERFECTLY SAFE TO DRIVE AND OPERATING AS INTENDED AND DESIGNED. WHENEVER I TAKE THE CAR TO THE SHOP TO HAVE THE ISSUES CHECKED, I AM ALWAYS TOLD THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM, SO COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING TO FIX. FIRST, THERE ARE SERIOUS ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION. WHEN TAKING THE CAR OUT OF PARK AND INTO DRIVE OR REVERSE, IT OFTEN LURCHES INTO GEAR, WHICH THEN CONTINUES AS I DRIVE INTO 1ST, 2ND, 3RD, AND SOMETIMES 4TH GEAR. IT SHIFTS REALLY HARD, AS IF THE CAR WERE A MANUAL AND I WAS NOT SHIFTING VERY WELL BETWEEN GEARS. A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO (~JUNE 2015) THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON FOR THE FIRST TIME, AND THE SHOP SAID THAT IT WAS A TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE SENSOR ERROR. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THE 2ND TIME THIS WEEK ON 7/14, AND TURNED OFF WITHIN 24 HOURS. I'VE CONTINUED TO HAVE THIS JERKING SHIFT ISSUE, THOUGH IT NEVER SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN IT'S AT THE SHOP. SECOND, THERE IS SOME KIND OF ELECTRICAL ISSUE/SHORT IN THE CAR, BECAUSE SOMETIMES WHEN I HAVE WINDOWS DOWN AND I HIT THE LEVER TO ROLL THE DRIVER'S WINDOW UP THE SUNROOF ALSO STARTS TO OPEN/CLOSE! OR, THE WINDOWS DON'T GO UP/DOWN AS HARD/SOFT AS I MOVE THE LEVER. ALSO, IN THE PAST MONTH OR SO (JULY 2015) THE PROXIMITY KEY SEEMS TO NOT WORK, AND I HAVE TO PRESS THE BUTTON ON THE DOOR HANDLE MULTIPLE (UP TO 10) TIMES BEFORE THE CAR WILL LOCK/UNLOCK. MY 2012 ELANTRA HAS FAILED TO START 3 TIMES WHILE IT WAS IN PARK AND 2 TIMES WHILE I WAS ON THE FREEWAY IN A PERIOD OF 12 MONTHS. THERE WAS NO WARNING WHILE I WAS ON THE FREEWAY. ALL DASHBOARD LIGHTS WERE ON, RADIO WAS ON AND IT WAS UNTIL I TRIED TO ACCELERATE WHEN I REALIZED THAT THE CAR HAD TURNED OFF ON ME. LUCKILY, IT WAS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC GOING ABOUT 15 MILES PER HOUR, NONETHELESS, IT WAS A PRETTY NERVE WRECKING UNSAFE EXPERIENCE. I WAS ABLE TO TURN THE CAR BACK ON AFTER 3-4 ATTEMPTS. MY BIGGEST FEAR IS THAT THE CAR CAN POTENTIALLY TURN OFF ON ME WHEN I'M GOING 60+ MPH. I DRIVE MY KIDS EVERYWHERE IN THIS CAR AND I FEAR FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER AFTER EVERY INCIDENT AND THEIR MAIN RESPONSE IS THAT THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, THEREFORE, THEY CAN'T FIX IT. I HAVE EVEN HAD THE HYUNDAI TOW TRUCK FROM ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TOW MY CAR FROM MY WORK PARKING LOT TO THE DEALER IN HOPES THAT IT WAS PROOF THAT THE CAR DID NOT TURN ON. TOW TRUCK DRIVER CONFIRMED THE CAR DID NOT TURN ON, THEN PREPPED CAR TO PLACE ON TOW TRUCK BED. HE GOT THE CAR TO DEALER, THEN ATTEMPTED TO TURN ON THE CAR AND IT DID. I TRIED TO GET DOCUMENTATION FROM HIM BUT HE DECLINED. ALL I GOT WAS A LETTER THAT STATED THAT THE CAR WAS TAKEN FROM MY WORK PARKING LOT TO THE DEALER WITH ZERO DETAILS. THE DEALER IS BEING IRRESPONSIBLE AND DOES NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. THE VEHICLE HAS THE SAME PROBLEMS DESCRIBED IN THE 2011 RECALL WITH THE BRAKE SWITCH. MY CRUISE CONTROL SOMETIMES DOES NOT WORK AND 3 TIMES HAS CUT OFF ON ITS OWN. IT WILL NOT CUT BACK ON TILL VEHICLE IS PULLED OVER AND STOPPED. I WAS TOLD THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE REPRODUCED BUT ITS HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY AND IM NOT SATISFIED WITH EITHER COCOA BEACH OR MELBOURNE DEALER. I HAVE A RECURRING CLUTCH PEDAL ISSUE AS WELL AND DO NOT TRUST THEIR TECHNICIANS ANY LONGER. I WILL JUST DRIVE THE CAR TILL IT LEAVES ME STRANDED OR IN A WRECK. WESTLAND HYUNDAI HOWEVER HAS NEVER HAD A REPEAT REPAIR. IM NOT SURE WHY THEIR TECHS ARE SO MUCH MORE RELIABLE. WISH I STILL LIVED IN UTAH TO HAVE MY ISSUES RESOLVED. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED CAUSING ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS TO ILLUMINATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE COMPUTER'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND A CLAIM WAS FILED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,010 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 6,000.

ALMOST EVERY TIME I HAVE STARTED THE VEHICLE AND PLACED IN DRIVE FROM REVERSING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, THE VEHICLE JOLTS AND SEEMS THAT TRANSMISSION IS LAGGING OR CHANGING GEARS ABRUPTLY. THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AND I HAD MADE AN APPOINTMENT. WHEN I TOOK IT IN FOR INSPECTION, THE DEALER SAID THEY COULD NOT RECREATE WHAT I WAS TALKING DESCRIBING. IN ADDITION, WHEN I DRIVE THE POWER STEERING HAS HAD SOME ISSUES. IT HAS NEVER DROVE IN A STRAIGHT LINE AFTER TWO ALIGNMENTS. AND IT CAN BE TOUGH TO TURN THE WHEEL. WHEN I CONTACTED THE DEALER ABOUT HOW I HEAR A CLUNKING SOUND WHEN DRIVING OVER BUMPS, HE TEST DROVE IT AND WAS CONFIRMED THAT HE AGREES THAT THERE IS CLUNKING NOISE, BUT SAID HE CANT PINPOINT IT AND IT WILL HAVE TO GET WORSE BEFORE HE COULD TELL. *TR

WHEN I ACCELERATE AND EVERY TIME THE GEAR CHANGES, THE CAR WOULD JOLT AS IF I WENT OVER A SPEED BUMP. IT'S REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE WHEN THE CAR JOLTS WHILE I ACCELERATE, BUT THE REAL PROBLEM IS WHEN I'M APPLYING THE BRAKES. THE CAR WOULD JOLT AND THE SPEED WOULD INCREASE WHICH NEARLY CAUSED SEVERAL ACCIDENTS. I CURRENTLY HAVE ABOUT 13,000 MILES AND PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE ABOUT 1.5 YEARS AGO. WITHIN THAT TIME, THE IGNITION WOULDN'T START. I WOULD IGNITE THE CAR AND THE CAR WOULD EVENTUALLY DIE ON ME. PEOPLE SAID IT MIGHT BE THE SPARK PLUGS, TRANSMISSION OR EVEN THE BATTERY. HOWEVER, IT DIDN'T MAKE SENSE BECAUSE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED ONLY A COUPLE OF MONTHS BEFORE THAT INCIDENT. I NEVER EVEN WASTED MY BATTERY IN ANY WAY EITHER. WHAT IF THE CAR DECIDES TO TURN OFF WHILE I'M ON THE FREEWAY? I CAN'T AFFORD THAT TO HAPPEN. *TR

CAR LURCHED, ENGINE SHUT OFF. CAR BECAME UNCONTROLLABLE AND ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH LIT UP. EVENTUALLY MANAGED TO GET TO SIDE OF ROAD WHERE THE TRANSMISSION LOCKED INTO PLACE. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WAS STILL FUNCTIONAL BUT CAR WAS COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE. OCCURRED AGAIN 800 MILES LATER AFTER "REPAIR" BOTH INCIDENTS NEARLY CAUSED ACCIDENTS. *TR
