Vehicle Issue Description for NHTSA Complaint: Component/System Failure: The engine of my 2013 Hyundai Elantra (VIN: [insert VIN]) completely failed at 51,000 miles. The alternator also failed and had to be replaced. There was a persistent smell of gasoline inside and outside the vehicle, creating a fire hazard. All components are available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk: The engine failure left the vehicle completely inoperable. The gas smell created a serious fire hazard and caused me to experience health issues, requiring an ER visit. The combination of engine malfunction, electrical issues, and fuel leaks posed a risk to my safety and the safety of others while driving. Confirmation by Dealer / Mechanic: Independent mechanics inspected the vehicle and confirmed the engine failure and alternator issues. Multiple mechanics advised not to drive the car due to the fire hazard. The original selling dealer (Larry H. Miller Toyota) inspected the car and acknowledged engine problems in writing on a business card. Inspection by Manufacturer / Others: Hyundai corporate has been notified, but they declined warranty coverage as the vehicle is a second-owner car and beyond the original warranty. The dealer has also been made aware of the engine failure. Warning Lamps / Symptoms: No warning lamps indicated imminent engine failure prior to the engine dying. The first symptoms were mechanical issues, gas smell, and eventual total engine failure. Alternator failure and repeated maintenance issues occurred within 8 months of purchase. Additional Notes: Vehicle purchased at 34,000 miles; engine failed at 51,000 miles. Independent repair receipts, ER paperwork, are available to support the case.
During the incident, there was an aggressive flow of smoke coming from behind the steering wheel within the dashboard indicating overheating and/or a fire. My vehicle was inspected by my local dealer, Ed Voyles Hyundai, who stated that their inspection found a burning left rear tail light assembly with fluid inside of it. No warning lamps or prompts appeared during the incident.
This seems to be a very common and serious issue with Hyundai vehicles. 2013 Hyundai Elanta, believed to be a frequent crankshaft position sensor issue. When driving the car, they vehicle will feel that it is losing power. When coming to a stop the engine will idle so low that it feels like it will stall or it does stall. The tachometer registered zero RPM's, even when accellearting. Attempting to accelerate up any incline and the car can not provide enough power. Sometimes the car will crank up, other times it will require time to restart. The car has stalled and low power idling multiple times, but it did happen in the middle of a 4 way intersection twice, and when the issue is present. Although we've been fortunate, no accidents have occurred, it is very unsafe for the owner and other drivers. This occurrence has happened several times over the past year. Two times it was immediately brought into the dealer service, the second time it did stall with the service member there. Both times they were unable to diagnose the problem and stated no error codes were reported. You have already issued a Recall for this same issue with a different model. Oct. 13, 2017 – Hyundai Motor America has recalled more than 400 vehicles potentially equipped with defective crankshaft assemblies, according to documentation submitted to the National Transportation Safety Administration. There are so many others that have reported this same issue and have been corrected with the replacement of the crankshaft position sensor. The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, there were several warning lights illuminated. The contact pressed START/STOP button several times before the vehicle started. The contact stated that the instrument cluster went black, and the radio and clock were inoperable. The contact stated that on other occasions, the key fob failed to unlock the vehicle. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was diagnosed; however, the dealer was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired, and the failure reoccurred several times. The contact had the vehicle towed back to the same dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the 12-Volt battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.

I was never informed through mail, email, or phone call about a potential fire hazard safety recall from Hyundai. In turn, due to my unawareness of the recall, my 2013 Elantra’s ABS pump had caught on fire, melted into the control module, and melted the ABS electrical harness to the module, short circuiting the ECU and starter as well.
On Saturday September 14, 2024 After working a full shift i started my 2013 Hyundai ELANTRA and the ecs light came on. which locks your power of steering. After several restarts to disengage the light. I called the tow truck pay the $80 for it to be brought to the dealership and was told that they can work on it on Tuesday. On Monday I received a phone call on stating I will be paying $3000 out-of-pocket.Even tho I have extended warranty nothing would be covered.
I was driving under 10 miles an hr because the roads were still wet from the night before as i am on the ramp to get on the highway barely turning the wheel it locks all the lights come on the dashboard such as abs and i crash into a railing because i couldn't move anything. Again only last week after this has been supposedly resolved driving barely going 2 miles my bf was actually driving and again roads were wet same thing all the abs sensor lights come on the dash the wheel locks and the car doesn't move, it's scary and ridiculous the amount of others I have found experiencing the same issue and from that accident I can barely drive now my anxiety and ptsd from the event has even affected my work so now I am losing money I didn't think I would ever fear being in a car and I hope you guys fix this so no one experiences what I am currently experiencing.
There is a on going issue with clock spring failing on 2011-2014 Hyundai models. My model is not covered under their extended warranty cause I have a hatchback version of the Elantra, which uses the same parts. I have already replaced my clock spring at 2019 and again the issue has come in 2024. My air bag light is on, my car horn doesn't work and buttons on the steering wheel. Feel like this is a huge safety issue as I cannot communicate with other drives with my horn and I do not have a safety net of air bags deploying when a accident happens.
We received the recall notice, advising us to call Hyundai to make an appointment to correct the safety problem. We made an appointment to fix the problem at their Richmond, CA location. When we went there, they told us that they could not fix it because their system was down. We made another appointment in Vacaville, CA. When we arrived there on the day of the appointment, they told us that their system was down. We do not know what to do now.
While pulling out onto a major main road, my car just stopped. The RPM's remained on zero after I restarted the car. I had to get it towed. The engine light was on, and it had trouble restarting. The code read camshaft. The mechanic replaced the camshaft and no other codes registered. It shut off two times after the camshaft was replaced. I took it back to the mechanic and it shut off on him 5 times. This car is unsafe. I am afraid to drive it, especially with have a young child.
My car had trouble starting then shut off while driving. Engine light was on and the RMP's stayed at zero. Code was for camshaft. Camshaft was replaced and the car shut off three more times while driving. I only have 83,000 miles on my car.
As the original and sole owner of this 2013 Hyundai Elantra, I was notified of Campaign # 23V65100, by letter, from Hyundai. I set an appointment with Suburban Hyundai, Troy, MI after confirming with said dealership that needed part(s) were on hand. I arrived as scheduled on [XXX] 2024 for needed repair. Service department examined vehicle and determined that my vehicle did need ordered repair: but stated they do not have the part(s). I inquired as to: a. Why they do not have the part when they knew fully well that that was what was needed to enact the repair.;b.Why they did not tell customer, after taking one day off from work and driving 50 miles round trip...that they do not carry the parts they are mandated to replace. Suburban Hyundai stated that they would call me in 7-10 days when the part arrived, so I could get repair completed and, of course, take another day off from work, drive 50 miles, and fear my garage does not burn down as I have a contract with State Farm Insurance that I will park my vehicle in an enclosed garage each night for storage. Also, Hyundai and Kia have a distinct reputation for vehicle theft, and leaving my vehicle parked on-the-street is a sure way to have a vehicle stolen! I then called Elder Hyundai in Macomb, MI, they stated that Hyundai does not yet have a solution to fix the ABS Fire and Fuse issue and that a "parts kit", as I was told by Sean, Svc. Manager at Suburban Hyundai, does not yet exist. I feel defrauded by Hyundai Manufacturing and Suburban Hyundai in particular. Do I need to park my vehicle at the Grosse Pointe Woods, Fire Station? I called the Hyundai Corporate Number regarding recalls and could not, in any way, connect with a person or voicemail to leave a message a response: can this/will this repair be made and: why must I now face another day off from work and another 50 mile drive, to what effect? The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled. The air bag warning light illuminated. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who determined that the battery needed to be replaced. The battery was replaced; however, the air bag warning light illuminated on and off. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired for the most recent failure. The dealer was contacted. The bulbs are constantly blowing out, and need to be replaced. The steering wheel/column makes noises, and doesn't always lock, but when it does lock, it can be difficult to unlock it! The suspension shakes and rattles. There is a campaign for the corrosion of the undercarriage/suspension, that I was not aware of until a few weeks ago(I do have an appointment for that). The most pressing concern is with the steering(mechanic thinks it could be the coupler), and there are numerous complaints about this on various internet auto forums.
My engine will not turn over 70% of the time. My radio switches on and off on its on and changes stations randomly. Even with new brakes, it sounds like they are constantly grinding. When my gas gets low the issue gets worse to the point i can't arm my car. I have a small child and my car started smoking. I was also stranded for almost an hour because my car would not start. I just got off the phone with pearson hyundai and they told me there is no remedy for this issue and just wait. This issue started mid last year when my engine started to shake at a stop light. I have had 3 mechanics look at my car and they won't touch the issue due to the recall.
My 2013 Hyundai starter would not stop trying to start the car even when the ignition was off and the key was not in the ignition. Then it got so hot it caught fire and destroyed the alternator as well as the starter. It was so hot it melted the alternator. Also the plastic that is used to hold the headlamps and other engine parts has disintegrated. I barely touch what's left and the plastic crumbles apart. My car no longer has the plastic under the hood. I use tape to hold up the lights. Car was stopped and in a parking lot when this happened.
23V651000 This recall came out in September it has now been 8 months and no remedy has been avaible which to me is not a timely manner, it is getting costly for me to not park near buildings where I normally park or in garages, starting to have to do that and just hope that my car does not catch fire, this is getting ridicules

The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that a new anti-theft system needed to be installed. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The manufacturer (Hyundai) has been ordered to recall and fix my 2013 Elantra and they are not doing so. On their website it says "Incomplete. Remedy not yet available." This recall was issued LAST YEAR, over 5 months ago! Hyundai has had 5 months to not only fix the issue, but at least notify owners of this issue. The only reason I heard about this was from the news!!! Also, the offered fix of replacing a fuse is not going to fix the actual issue - leaking brake fluid. As a parent with small children, in a one-car family, this is unacceptable. Hyundai needs to fix their mistake immediately or find a way for my family to be able to drive safely. Their statement that "if you see smoke, evacuate the car" is completely irresponsible to offer as a solution to families who need precious time to unbuckle their children from car seats. Someone is going to die due to Hyundai's negligence, it's only a matter of time.
FRUSTRATED BECAUSE THIS RECALL IS NOW 5 MONTHS OLD WITH NO REMEDY AVAILABLE. As a senior citizen I am not confident driving this vehicle with the possibility of a fire while driving. I would like someone to put pressure on Hyundai to get this remedied quickly. I have another vehicle but I should not have to NOT drive this vehicle. I want my vehicle fixed!
While driving my vehicle I began to notice the brake indicator light would flicker when I would have my foot on the brake.
Due to the nature of the manufacturer's recall; (Hyundai Elantra 2013- Manufacturer Recall Number 251 "URGENT: FIRE RISK WHEN PARKED" & NHTSA Recall Number 23V651000) that has been issued to my car, I am now at risk and in danger, both physically and financially. This recall notice has made me aware that I can no longer park my car safely in my garage, nor in my driveway, without putting myself, my family and all neighbors residing in the surrounding houses at risk of causing a residual house fire. In addition, I fear for the safety of all innocent bystanders while driving this vehicle where other cars are present due to the fact that this potentially immanent electrical shortage may occur while parked or driving on the street. Since this issue has caused me to take these measures to protect myself and others, I have come to the realization that I must now look into selling and replacing my beloved car, however as stated above, the urgent recall notice that now exists on this vehicle will make it impossible to obtain a fair asking price from any potential buyers, leaving me unable to compensate for the financial investments I've made in regards to purchasing and maintaining this vehicle over the years. This issue now deems my car essentially worthless in its current state, and with no remedy available, I'm unable to sell this vehicle for any sum that's close to the fair market value that I deserve. Thus far, I have been fortunate enough to not experience any malfunctions that have led to a fire, BUT with a remedy not being available to solve this issue I'm left with the constant stress & fear that I may cause harm to myself or others by simply going about my daily tasks, and have no way to financially recover from the necessary purchase of a substitute vehicle that is required for me to get to work, tend to my family, and ultimately pay my bills. I hope I have made you aware how crucial it is this gets resolved promptly before substantial harm does come to me.
Car unable to pass smog check engine issues. Wheels no good.
I feel as though this recall is taking too long to complete/remedy. I feel as though it has been an unreasonable amount of time from the date of the recall notice to now for a resolution. I am worried about damage to my vehicle over time.
This particular recall was begun in September 2023. My vehicle was affected by it and upon calling my local Hyundai dealer, I was informed that no 'remedy' has been determined. I have checked online several times for an update and nothing has changed. I am concerned about potential fire risk and am a homeowner. I prefer the security of my own locked garage, yet Hyundai suggests parking the vehicle outside - yet their other recent recall of Hyundai vehicle subjected consumers to theft of vehicles. I can't win. It's been 2 months since the recall was announced. I am concerned that no solution has been offered for this current 'fire' recall. How long can Hyundai continue to drags its feet while leaving millions of customers at potential risk?
2013 Elantra GT purchased new less than 63,000 miles. Airbag warning light on constantly. Hyundai has issued an extended lifetime warranty on clock spring. 2 local Dealers are 45 days behind in scheduling repairs and will not look at clockspring without agreement to pay $200.00 diagnostic fee to find what other issue may be at fault. This makes the extended warranty bait and switch smokescreen worthless. Diagnostic failed to identify clock spring failure. Instead both front end impact sensors were shorting out and anticipated ECU failure. estimated repair approx $1,000. After this diagnosis noise and resistance in steering wheel increased which is symptomatic of clock spring failure causing electrical failure in other systems. 20 miles later AC blower motor failed and burning electrical smell/smoke presented from behind dashboard. The extent and resulting danger from the faulty wiring systems is undetermined at this time. Significant risk of fire danger
My car keeps breaking down whenever I slow down or press on the brakes. I have a malfunction indicator lamp and I was notified via letter to call Hyundai asap to get a service so that my car doesn’t light on fire. I went to a mechanic who told me the engine is bad and it’s also a real from Hyundai. I called numerous times, and every time I am told there’s nothing they can do about it at this time. They keep telling me to wait and they don’t give me any options. This is a frustrating situation. I drive two small children in my car and I don’t want anything to happen to them because the Hyundai dealership refused to fix their mistake.
I got a recall letter in the mail and Burns Hyundai does not want to give me a service or loaner vehicle.
Driving the vehicle on 9/23/23 traveling at ~ 35 mph. Suddenly, the breaks were applied (not by input from me) and the car came to a screeching halt. The car had to be towed via flatbed rate ($100 charge) because all four wheel brakes were locked and could not be disengaged by me nor the tow truck driver. The car was towed to Napleton's Auto Park in Urbana IL. The ABS/HECU module has been confirmed to be at fault by the dealership mechanics. Presently, I am waiting to hear back from the dealership IF/WHEN the vehicle will be repaired under warranty. Thankfully the incident did not occur at highway nor interstate speed nor did I have my wife or kids in the vehicle. 2013 Elantra Purchased New.
TPMS light is flashing due to failure in electrical panel, despite tire pressure being normal. Additionally, the steering wheel makes a clicking noise that increases when accelerating above 10 mph.
The airbag light is on and no fuses are out and cruise control and other buttons on steering wheel is not working. If airbags are faulty or do not deploy it is a huge safety concern. Someone could be killed or extremely hurt. It has not been confirmed by a dealer but willing to take it in to be checked. It has not been checked yet by a professional. My warning lamps have been on for about two weeks now.
I took my car in to the dealership to have the anti-theft software update, I was told that the update would prevent my car from getting stolen using the USB method. Two weeks later, my car was stolen the police found it, and they had used the USB method to steal it so the software update did not work and the dealership isn’t taking accountability. This is an issue that needs to be looked into as they’re saying the software update will help, but it is not helping with all the car theft.
THIS IS THE 2ND TIME this happened. On june 6 while driving i put on A C and it did not go on, along with the lights, windshield wipers. I stopped for a doctors appointment and returned in about an hour , the car started , sounded sluggish and the same problem, no AC . lights, windshield wipers. then about 15 minutes later i pulled my car aside, shut it down , started it and all was working properly. It has happened more than once last time was about 2 months ago and i do not know it until i try to use the electrical items. car started up right away. if it was raining, and i stopped for an errand and tried to use the windshield wipers i would be in trouble as i would not be able to drive home.
I dropped my 2013 Hyundai Elantra Limited off on 4/3/23 for an oil change and to diagnosis and repair my engine stalling and engine boggling and repair headlight restoration. When I picked up my car I was told that they found metal shaving in my oil and on the oil dip stick and that I would need a new engine. Might I add, I don't have any lights blinking or remaining on such as my oil, engine, etc. I have kept up with all my maintenance over the years and have had my car service when it was due. While driving my car, it'll lose power and jerk forward. Other times, the car will start up with no RPMs registering while the car is moving up to 60 miles. The car has also displaced the sluggish barely moving forward action when the car's RPMs are not registering. The car back fires and putts along and during a traffic lights or stop sign the car will shut off. It even started shutting off while back-up into my parking space. There is clearly something wrong with these engines and should be covered under the manufacturer warranty. I am still in disbelief about my vehicle and have been getting the run around from a couple different Hyundai dealerships saying my particular engine was discontinued and I should check with the service department to see if my car qualifies for the manufacturer warranty repair but no one will answer the phone so I decided to call another dealership well outside my area for service. This car is by far DANGEROUS to drive and without having any codes generated or light indicators advising me of an engine issue is extremely upsetting. I use my vehicle to take my mother to her many doctor appointments, my grandson to various places and I use the car to get to and from work each day. Well before all of these issues, my break lights and some other lights in the rear continued to blow and had to be replaced and no one said anything about there being an issue and I did not have the appropriate direction to submit an issue.

I have replaced the lights and battery many times and something keeps draining it. The outside brake lights sometimes stay on. So does the front running lights. The car sometimes wants to stall and when I press on the gas pedal it finally catches but still seems like it is going to shut down. The steering column has a really bad clicking in it and doesn’t seem to be tight anymore.
My car tends to shut off on its own while driving. I’ve fixed the fuel pump thinking that can be the issue due to the car passing “green” on the machine stating everything is good. No lights on my dashboard, engine tends to shake. RPM arrow is all over the place. The car is well taken care of. I’m spending a lot of money on mechanics fixing things that clearly aren’t the issue with the vehicle.
My 2013 was stolen because of defective car . The manufacturer choose to sip safety for dollars they could have place a immobilizer in all Hyundai form 2011 until current but did not in the United States, but in Canada it is a must have item.
I have had multiple headlights, turn lights and brake lights burn out - started less than a year of car ownership; with at least one outage every 2-3 months - both driver and passenger, and rear lights. Not just bulb replacements, I’ve had Expensive replacements for harnesses on both sides too, but issue keeps returning. Currently driver brake light went out, can’t see a Hyundai mechanic for another month due to they and surrounding Hyundai dealers are fully booked. The car is faulty. I am the original owner.
The airbags on the side of the driver's seat is very dangerous and can implode just by slamming the car door. I've also had an on-going issue with the break line ( lights ) the passenger side break light will not turn off, this issue is also very dangerous for myself and other drivers who do not know when I'm using the breaks due to this issue. I've brought the vehicle to Hyundai North Houston to have the break light inspected, ( that was about a week ago ) however I was told that they could not give me a loaner vehicle and the next appointment to inspect this vehicle would be as early as Aug 31,2022 and as late as September 2022. I've had technicians jump the battery several times due to this light not turning off. Many of the techs says it's the breakline and possibly a fuse that need to be changed. I also brought the vehicle to the purchase location ( Carmax/North Houston ) for inspection and service, but they did not address this as a problem during that time. The vehicle also seems to overheat more than what is normal and profusely leak water.There is also a problem with the tire sensors. The vehicle was given to me at purchase with the tire sensor lights on. I've had the sensors checked out and was informed there is no issue, now the sensor light does not illuminate even if the tire pressure is low. This vehicle has many dangerous driving components and should be investigated immediately.
In July 2015 with 25k miles, the interior of the vehicle was leaking water from the sun visor as well as under the glove box. When I made a left turn I could hear water swishing from one side to the other, then saw water coming out from under the glove box area. Water also dripped from the drivers sun visor. I took it to the dealer in Troy MI and they blamed me for having dirty drain holes in the sun roof as well as having a wind deflector on the sun roof which caused dirt to build up and clog the drain holes. The sun roof and wind deflector were factory installed as I bought the vehicle brand new in 2013. The dealer did not remove the headliner to see if any mold was visible. They used an air compressor to clean out the clogged drain holes and charged me for the service even though the vehicle was still under warranty (dealer said it was not covered under warranty). I am not aware of the issue happening again, or if it did happen it wasn't enough water for me to notice. I however have and do smell mold in my vehicle daily. Today, June 7, 2022, with 116k miles, after leaving my car parked outside overnight with heavy rain I again experienced water build up inside the car. I saw water coming out from under the glove box and heard it swishing around. I called the dealer in Troy MI and was told they cannot service my vehicle, it is a 4 month wait for diagnosis. I called a second dealer in Macomb MI and was told the vehicle could not be looked at until August and all expenses would be my responsibility. The service tech stated the car would need to be torn apart (dash, door, headliner, etc) to find where the water was coming from. A dealer in Southfield MI would be able to service the vehicle two days from now, I'm suppose to drive two days with water swishing around? What electrical safety issues are at hand here? It seems as though HYUNDAI has a defect in the design or part(s) which is causing this issue. I am also concerned with mold growth from back in 2015.
Immobilizer malfunctioning while driving which causes vehicle to lose power unexpectedly while no key is detected.

The contact was able to start the vehicle within 10 minutes. The contact stated she continued to experience the failure. The contact stated she called AAA company, who came to her residence and replaced the battery. The contact stated she continued to experience the failure and had the battery replaced for a second time. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the battery to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer informed her they would not service her vehicle anymore; and she would need to seek service at another dealer. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

TWO issues, that are, at times related: * First, intermittent airbag dash warning light enabled; comes and goes, no obvious trigger (bumps, turns, etc.). This has been occurring for two weeks. // * Second, if I stop and turn off the car while the airbag light is lit, the vehicle will remain in accessory mode, with radio and climate control still on, and the dash display says to shift the car to park (it is in park) and that the key is not in the vehicle, and when I attempt to lock the car with either key fob or door lock control, it will not lock. This has been occurring for nearly a week, first on 2/1/22 as I was attending my father's funeral. I have seen that there was a recall for the airbag issue for same year/make/model, but my car does not appear to be one of those included in the recall (searched by VIN). After the completion of my work shift, I return to my vehicle and discovered a fire has taken place. Lucky, the fire didn't get out of control and wasn't active at the time. The passenger seat was completely burnt including the seat covers and the items in the seat. The items in the seat included: Steak & shake leftover trash, and a perfume bottle. This fire also damaged a door dash bag that I had in the back passenger seat. Not to mention, the impact of the fire that created black duct all over the vehicle windshields, radio, seats, dashboard etc... No police report, nor fire report has been reported at this given time.
The car experienced (1) poor acceleration, (2) check engine light come on, (3) engine stalling, (4) Tachometer drops to zero. It was first found the MAP sensor was faulty. After the sensor was replaced, the car ran but stalled again intermittently. It was found the problem was caused by crank shaft position sensor (fault code P0335). After the senor was replaced about three weeks ago, the car has been running fine.

AS SUCH, THE DEALERSHIP HAS QUOTED $480 TO FIX MY VEHICLE'S AIRBAG CLOCK SPRING ASSEMBLY. I WENT TO HYUNDAI PARTS TO BUY ONE AND THE GUY WHO WORKS THERE TOLD ME THAT THE SWITCH IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND IS MADE OF PLASTIC THAT CAN EASILY CAUSE CRACKS OR CONDENSATION WHERE WATER CAN GO INSIDE. IN ADDITION, HE MENTIONED HYUNDAI KNEW ABOUT THIS AND MADE AN UPDATED PART WHICH IS MADE OF METAL. KNOWING THAT THIS WAS FAULTY AND HYUNDAI HAD HID THE INFORMATION, THE IGNITION SWITCH SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED AND REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE.

THE POOR DESIGN OF THE STEERING COVERS SQUEEZE THE WIRES THAT ARE BENT INTO THE CONNECTOR CAUSING THESE CIRCUITS NOT TO FUNCTION. AT THIS POINT, THE RED LIGHT FOR THE AIR-BAG IS ON ALL THE TIME WHICH MEANS THE IT WILL NOT DEPLOY CAUSING SERIOUS DAMAGE. THIS STEERING COVER DESIGN IS COMMON ON ALL ELANTRA MODELS SO WE SUSPECT THE PROBLEM COULD IMPACT SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF CARS. I MANAGED TO TEST THE PROBLEM, BUT PULLING THE COVER OFF AND TESTING THE WIRES. WHEN THE COVER IS PULL AWAY FROM THE BODY OF THE STEERING, THE CIRCUIT FOR THE CRUISE CONTROL WORKS! HYUNDAI SHOULD RE-LOCATE THE PLUG WHERE THESE WIRES ARE CONNECTED FURTHER LOWER TO AVOID THESE WIRES GETTING SQUEEZED. AND FOR THE CURRENT MODELS, A SHORTER CONNECTOR COULD REMEDY THIS PROBLEM BY PREVENTING THE WIRES FROM GETTING SQUEEZED.

THE PROBLEM IS THE CLOCK SPRING IN THE STEERING WHEEL WHICH IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE ON THIS TYPE AND YEAR VEHICLE. THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT THIS WHICH EXTENDS THE CLOCK SPRING WARRANTY TO 15K MILES AND UNLIMITED MILEAGE BUT THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THAT OUR CAR IS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS EXTENDED WARRANTY BASED ON THE VIN. THE DEALER TOLD US TO CALL HYUNDAI CORPORATE AT 800-633-5151 AND ASK FOR "GOOD WILL" WARRANTY COVERAGE WHICH I DID AND I HAVE A CASE OPEN # 11648781. THE REPRESENTATIVE ON THE PHONE WAS EVASIVE AND NOT WILLING TO DO MUCH. THE SAME WITH THE DEALER. THE EXTENDED WARRANTY NHTSA ID NUMBER IS 10115229, THE MANUFACTURER SERVICE BULLETIN # IS 5NP-E9R9G-08 (ATTACHED HERE). THE ISSUE COVERS 2011-2014 ELANTRA AND 2011-2013 SONATA MODELS. THE CLOCK SPRING PART # IS EXACTLY THE SAME BETWEEN THESE MODELS. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY SOME CARS ARE COVERED AND SOME NOT. IF THIS IS SUCH A COMMON PROBLEM TO TRIGGER EXTENDED WARRANTY, ALL CARS IN THE AFFECTED YEARS MUST BE COVERED. THE CLOCK SPRING SHOULD LAST HE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE, THUS THE 15 YEARS EXTENDED WARRANTY. HYUNDAI SHOULD DO GOOD BY ITS CUSTOMERS AND FIX ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES. EXTENDED WARRANTY IS MUCH CHEAPER THAN A FULL BLOWN RECALL. ONE LAST THING, THIS PROBLEM IS ALSO A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE IS DISABLES THE ENTIRE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS ARE ALSO AFFECTED, THE CRUISE CONTROL BUTTON A MIXED UP, THE CANCEL BECAME SET FOR EXAMPLE WHICH COULD BE QUITE DANGEROUS. OTHER BUTTONS DON'T WORK AT ALL OR ALL THE TIME. THIS IS MY SECOND HYUNDAI VEHICLE AND IT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BE THE LAST. VERY FRUSTRATING.
VEHICLE KEEPS SHUTTING OFF/ STALLING. FIRST DEALER CLAIMED IT WAS A YAW RATE SENSOR. SENSOR WAS CHANGED AND DID NOT SOLVE ISSUE. IT WAS ALSO EXPERIENCING FUEL PUMP PROBLEMS, GAS WOULD LEAK WHEN FILLING AND GAS WOULD NOT CALCULATE MILEAGE OR UPDATE. SECOND DEALER DID NOT SEE A FUEL PUMP PROBLEM. NOW BELIEVES ITS A ECM PROBLEM. THEY DID NOT WANT TO COVER IT UNDER WARRANTY.
AS I AM DRIVING THE CAR ON CITY STREETS, HIGHWAYS ETC. THE TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT COMES ON AND STARTS FLASHING AND AT THE SAME TIME THE RADIO, NAVIGATION SYSTEM. BLUETOOTH. BLUE LINK MONITORING SYSTEM, AS WELL AS SENSORS/MONITORING EQUIPMENT SHUTTING DOWN AND RESETTING AND OTHER SYSTEMS SHUT DOWN. I ALSO CAN NOT USE MY KEY FOB TO LOCK MY DOORS UNTIL THE CAR HAS RESET. USUALLY THE CAR WILL RESET BETWEEN FIVE MINTUES TO AN HOUR. CONCERN THAT THE ISSUE WILL INTENSIFY WITH THE SUDDEN SHUT DOWN OF THE ENGINE RESULTING IN A POTENTIAL LIFE THREATENING TO MYSELF AND OTHERS. THE CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN INTO THE DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES OVER THE PAST 9 MONTHS, WITHOUT ANY SUCCESS IN CORRECTING THE ISSUE. THE ISSUE CANNOT BE REPLICATED WHEN THE CAR IS IN THE SHOP. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY HYUNDAI USA THIS IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE THE DEALER CANNOT REPLICATE AND DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE. OTHER PERSONS HAVE REPORTED SIMILAR ISSUES WITH NO SOLUTION AND RECEIVING THE SAME GUIDANCE FROM HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS.ISSUES HAVE OCCURRED. I HAVE HAD THE CAR INTO THE DEALER @ 6 TIMES FOR ASSESSMENT SINCE OCTOBER 15, 2017 THROUGH PRESENT. THE ISSUES HAVE OCCURRED AT A VARIETY OF SPEEDS, 30MPH UP TO 65-70 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY.

TURNS OUT WHEN I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC WHO IS HONEST AND KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT THAT IT IS A WRIST PIN....WHICH MEANS A WHOLE NEW ENGINE. THIS VEHICLE IS LESS THAN 5 YEARS OF AGE WITH A DEFECTIVE CRITICAL SAFETY COMPONENT FAILURE THAT HYUNDAI REFUSES TO COVER FOR ANY REASON OTHER THAN FORCE BY GOVERNMENT AGENCY. THIS COMPONENT IS NOT EXTERNAL BUT RATHER WELL PROTECTED AND NOT SUSCEPTIBLE TO FLUIDS, OR EXTERNAL FORCES OTHER THAN ITS NORMAL OPERATION OF SIMPLY TURNING WITH THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS COMPONENT CONNECTS THE STEERING WHEEL AIRBAG TO THE SRS SYSTEM HOWEVER INSTEAD OF SIMPLY DISABLING THE STEERING WHEEL AIRBAG, IT'S FAILURE DISABLES ALL THE AIRBAGS AS WELL AS ANY OTHER SAFETY DEVICE CONNECTED TO THE SRS SYSTEM. THROUGH NO FAULT OF THE OWNER OR THE OPERATOR OF THE VEHICLE, THE SRS SYSTEM CAN SHUTDOWN WHILE DRIVING WITH NO AUDIBLE INDICATION OTHER THAN A SMALL IDIOT LIGHT ON THE DASH WHICH CAN EASILY BE UNNOTICED. IF A CRASH SITUATION OCCURS, THE OPERATOR OF THE VEHICLE CAN BE SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED DUE TO NO AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. I CONTEND THIS PART IN THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN POORLY DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED AND BECOMES DEFECTIVE LONG BEFORE THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM SERVICE. THIS PART, AT THE VERY LEAST, SHOULD BE PAID FOR BY HYUNDAI. I BEGAN TO SPIN 360 DEGREES, INTO 2 OF THE RIGHT LANES AS I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL I BEGAN TO SPIN 3 LANES BACK TO THE LEFT. BY THE TIME I STOPPED SPINNING I HAD SPUN INTO THE EMERGENCY LANE FACING SOUTH. FORTUNATELY THE SPEEDING CARS WERE ABLE TO DODGE HITTING ME AND I ENDED UP IN THE EMERGENCY LANE WITHOUT HITTING THE MEDIAN STRIP OR ANY CARS OR TRUCK. MY CAR APPEARED TO BE IN PERFECT CONDITION EXCEPT MY DASH BOARD LIGHTS WERE LITE BUT I HAD NOTICED THAT THE HEAT WENT OFF SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH BOARD TURNING ON. I HAD NEVER HAD ANYTHING LIKE THIS HAPPEN BEFORE. I CALLED 911 AND A STATE TROOPER CAME ALONG WITH I-DOT WHO ADVISED ME TO CALL FOR A TOW AND THEY PULLED OFF LEAVING ME IN A DANGEROUS SPOT WITH NO HAZARD LIGHTS IN THE LIGHT DRIZZLE. AFTER2 HOURS I CALLED *999 TO INFORM THEM THAT I WAS STILL ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THAT CARS WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO SEE ME DUE TO THE SLEET AND THE SLIGHT FOG IT WAS CREATING. I ALSO LET THEM KNOW THAT THE TOW COMPANY DIDN'T WANT TO TOW ME FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. I-DOT CAME, TRIED TO JUMP MY CAR, AND THEN LEFT ME TO WAIT FOR THE TOW TRUCK. AFTER A TOTAL 4 HOURS THE TOW TRUCK FINALLY ARRIVED AND TOWED ME TO PEP BOYS. ONCE AT PEP BOYS THEY STATED THAT MY BATTERY WAS DEAD BUT MY ALTERNATOR WAS WORKING PROPERLY. THEY REPLACED THE BATTERY AND I DROVE HOME 6 MILES WITHOUT INCIDENT. MY HYUNDAI GAVE ME NO WARNING AND TURNED OFF WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY FOR NO APPARENT REASON. REPLACED BATTERY AND CAME OUT OF WORK NOT LONG AFTER AND CAR WOULD NOT START. I HIT STEERING WHEEL IN FRUSTRATION AND TRIED AGAIN AND CAR STARTED. DROVE IT HOME, LEFT IT IN ACCESSORY POSITION, LOST POWER. DID SAME THING AS BEFORE WITH HITTING STEERING WHEEL, STARTED AGAIN. RECENTLY MOVED AWAY TO COLLEGE, DROVE IT ALL DAY, WENT BACK TO MY PARENT'S HOUSE FOR A COUPLE HOURS WENT TO LEAVE AND THE KEYS WOULD NOT TURN (COULD NOT EVEN GET STEERING WHEEL UNLOCKED), IT SAT OVERNIGHT AT MY PARENTS FOR AT LEAST ONE NIGHT MAYBE TWO WHILE I DROVE MY MOTHER'S CAR. THE ORIGINAL DEALER CAME TO TAKE IT BACK AND SEE IF HE COULD FIGURE IT OUT, STARTED THE FIRST TIME HE TRIED TO START IT. TURNED IT OFF AND TRIED AGAIN AND HE COULD NOT GET STEERING WHEEL TO UNLOCK AND KEY TO TURN, WAITED A COUPLE MINUTES AND TRIED AGAIN AND IT HAS BEEN RUNNING FINE SINCE. THE DEALER I BOUGHT IT FROM IS WILLING TO LET ME TRADE THE CAR BACK TO HIM FOR SOMETHING ELSE IF I CAN FIND SOMETHING I WANT BUT I LOVE MY CAR.

OUR CRUISE CONTROL (CC) SWITCHES ON THE STEERING HAVE STOPPED WORKING! THE BEHAVIOR WAS UN-PREDICABLE AND DANGEROUS FOR WHILE WHEN HITTING CANCEL BUTTON WOULD "ENGAGE" THE CC. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE SINCE IT COULD CAUSE ACCIDENTS. I BELIEVE THIS IS DUE TO THE POOR DESIGN ON THE CONNECTOR THAT CONNECTS THE WIRES FROM THE CC SWITCHES TO THE STEERING CASE. THE CONNECTOR IS PLACED RIGHT UNDER THE HORN COVER AND WE BELIEVE THE CONNECTOR GETS SQUEEZED EVERY TIME THE HORN IS USED. I TESTED THIS MYSELF AND WAS ABLE TO GET THE CC TO WORK AFTER LIFTING THE HORN COVERS FORWARD SECTION WHICH REDUCED THE PRESSURE FROM THE CONNECTOR RIGHT UNDERNEATH IT ! WHEN I DID THIS, HITTING THE CC. ONCE AGAIN THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE CAUSE DRIVERS COULD ASSUME THEY ARE DISABLING THE CC, WHEN THEY COULD ACTUALLY BE ACTIVATING CC WHICH WILL CAUSE ACCIDENTS.

THE CAR SEEMED TO START EVERY SINGLE TIME FOR ABOUT A WEEK AFTER THE VISIT, AND NOW IT'S DOING IT AGAIN. CALLED HYUNDAI AND THEY KNEW NOTHING ABOUT ISSUE. RODENT DETERRENT TAPE IS BEING PURCHASED FROM HONDA (WHO ALREADY ACKNOWLEDGES THIS ISSUE AND IS CURRENT THE SUBJECT OF A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT). TAPE WILL BE WRAPPED AROUND WIRES FOLLOWING REPAIRS.

I WENT TO PEP BOYS AND MENEIKE TO CHECK THIS OUT AND THEY SAID THAT I HAD A P2096 PROBLEM. THIS CODE WAS FOLLOWED WITH THE DESCRIPTION AS FOLLOWS: POST CATALYST FUEL TRIM SYSTEM TOO LEAN BANK 1. ESSENTIALLY I WAS TOLD THAT THE RATIO OF OXYGEN AND FUEL , THE ENGINE TAKE IS OFF. THEY THOUGHT IT WAS A LEAK THAT WOULD CAUSE THE LACK OF FUEL GOING INTO THE ENGINE, BUT WHEN THEY INVESTIGATED IT, THEY DIDN'T FIND A LEAK. AS OF NOW, I DON'T HAVE A REAL DIAGNOSIS FOR MY CAR. I'M NOT SURE IF ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS CORRELATE OR HAVE A DOMINO EFFECT ON EACH OTHER, BUT THE ISSUE WILL TAKE A WHILE TO TAKE CARE OF.

I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN JUNE 2013. I HAD NO COMPLAINTS UNTIL JULY OF 2014, WHEREIN MY CAR PICKS AND CHOOSES WHEN TO START. I HAVE LOOKED ONLINE AND THERE ARE MANY OTHERS WHO SEEM TO HAVE THIS COMPLAINT. I FINALLY GAVE IN ON AUG. 24, AFTER MY CAR SAT FOR TWO DAYS BECAUSE I COULD NOT GET IT TO START. I CALLED THE HYUNDAI 24 HOUR ROADSIDE AND HAD THEM TOW IT TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER INITIALLY TRIED TO START IT, AND IT DIDN'T. HE POPPED THE BUTTON NEAREST THE TOP OF THE SHIFTER AND PRESSED IT IN, AND PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, IT THEN STARTED BUT SPUTTERED LIKE IT WANTED TO TURN OFF. HE WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR ONTO THE TOW TRUCK. THE NEXT MORNING, I SPOKE WITH THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP WHO INDICATED THAT THE CAR WAS STARTING FOR THEM JUST FINE. HE SAID THERE ARE SO MANY SENSORS THAT IT COULD BE ONE, BUT THEY WOULDN'T KNOW WHERE TO START AS THERE ARE SO MANY AND COULD NOT MAKE AN EDUCATED GUESS. HE WANTED TO KEEP IT OVERNIGHT TO SEE IF IT WOULD ACT UP FOR THEM. IT IS NOW 2PM TWO DAYS LATER AND THE MECHANIC CLAIMS THERE IS STILL NO ISSUE, HE SAID THEY HAVE LET IT RUN ALL MORNING AND IT IS FINE. COPS CAME (9:45-10:15 AM , AND SAID I LOOKED FUNNY AND ARRESTED ME ACCUSING ME OF BEING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF MEDICATION. I WAS NOT ON ANY MEDICINE AND DEFINITELY NOT DRINKING. CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS AFTER EXPLOSION AND I HAVE NOT HAD ANOTHER FOR OVER 8 MONTHS. I AM ON DISABILITY FOR FIBROMYALGIA, NEURALGIA, & OSTEOPOROSIS, AND HOLLOW BONES. THEY SENT OUT A TOW TRUCK TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HE USED THE SHIFT OVERRIDE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND THE CAR STARTED RIGHT UP ONCE IT WAS IN NEUTRAL AND IT DROVE JUST FINE. WHEN THIS ISSUE OCCURS THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS UP BUT WHEN I TURN THE KEY TO START THE CAR, THE PANEL GOES OUT AND THERE IS NOTHING BUT SILENCE FROM THE ENGINE. SO THAT FRIDAY OFF THE CAR WENT TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP. AT THE DEALERSHIP I WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR NEEDED AN ALIGNMENT BAD & THAT MY TIRES WERE OVER INFLATED BY 8LBS EACH. SO 3 HRS & A LOT OF PATIENCE I WAS TOLD THE CAR WAS ALL SET. 20 MINS AFTER LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP THE TPMS LIGHT GOES OFF AGAIN WITH THE BLUE LINK ALERT TO SERVICE THE CAR ASAP. THE FOLLOWING DAY BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN. THIS TRIP I WAS TOLD I NEEDED A SENSOR CHANGED. 3 HRS LATER I LEAVE & HALF WAY HOME TPMS AGAIN. THAT'S 5 TIMES NO REPAIR. WHILE THERE, SALESMAN WHO SOLD ME CAR HAD ME TURN OFF THE AUTOMATIC SETTING FOR HEADLAMPS. WHEN I DID THAT, IT ALSO CAUSED THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS FOR BLUE TOOTH AND RADIO CONTROL TO NO LONGER FUNCTION. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS RECALL ON BRAKE STOP SWITCH? THAT WAS NOT APPARENTLY CORRECTED BEFORE SELLING ME THE CAR. THE CAR HAS ELECTRICAL WIRING ISSUES. I BOUGHT MY 2013 ELANTRA ON 7/17/12 FROM ORLANDO HYUNDAI. ON 8/4/12 WHILE DRIVING ON I-95, THE TPMS (TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM) LIGHT BEGAN TO FLASH. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED INTO THE NEAREST TIRE SHOP AND HAD THE TIRE PRESSURE CHECKED ON ALL 4 TIRES AND THEY WERE ALL FINE. THE MECHANIC SUGGESTED I HAVE MY DEALERSHIP TAKE A LOOK AND POSSIBLY HAVE THEM RESET THE SENSORS. UPON MY ARRIVAL HOME, I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO PROVIDE A REASON FOR THE SENSORS GOING OFF. THE ISSUE PERSISTED FOR SEVERAL MONTHS CAUSING ME TO SPEND COUNTLESS HOURS AT THE DEALERSHIP. THEY EVEN WENT AS FAR AS TO KEEP MY CAR FOR OVER A WEEK, DRIVE IT SEVERAL MILES AND REPLACE THE ENTIRE SYSTEM INCLUDING ALL FOUR TIRE SENSORS. DESPITE THIS, THE TPMS LIGHT STILL FLASHES. THEY HAVE ATTEMPTED TO CONVINCE ME THAT USB AND AUX CORDS IN MY CAR (USED WITH MY PHONE) ARE CAUSING A SIGNAL INTERFERENCE WITH THE SENSORS. IN MY OPINION THAT IS A BOGUS EXCUSE. THE CAR SHOULD NOT HAVE THE FEATURES IF THEY ARE UNABLE TO COEXIST. THE DEALERSHIP HAS ALSO ATTEMPTED TO REASSURE ME THAT NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE CAR AND IT IS SAFE TO DRIVE EVEN WHILE THE TPMS LIGHT IS FLASHING. I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS EITHER AS I CONSTANTLY HAVE A SAFETY FEATURE ALERTING ME TO BELIEVE OTHERWISE. I WAS CITED FOR VIOLATING CALIFORNIA VEHICLE CODE SECTION 24800 WHICH STATES "NO VEHICLE SHALL BE DRIVEN AT ANY TIME WITH THE PARKING LAMPS LIGHTED EXCEPT WHEN THE LAMPS ARE BEING USED AS TURN SIGNAL LAMPS OR WHEN THE HEADLAMPS ARE ALSO ILLUMINATED". I EXPLAINED THE SCENARIO TO MY LAWYER AND HE ADVISED ME THAT THE CITATION IS VALID BECAUSE IN C.A.
