Engine is burning too hot its burning though oil. Oil change sept 3rd 2025 and by nov 7 2025 car had NO OIL. this is an oil burn off issue with the sport engine in this model Elantra. i cannot get an oil change every month. that is ridiculous. this time it caused my car to have flashing engine light due to insanely low oil after just TWO MONTHS. i only drive 60 miles a day. shop told me in april15 20205 i had an oil leak and they fixed it, resealed again in july cuz the oil was still going low. now they told me nov 11th they did a test and the engine is running too hot and is burning off the oil.
The vehicle caught fire while it was in motion; there were loud bangs and a lot of noise, and smoke started coming out of the front, and the engine and the undercarriage caught fire.I managed to turn it off, but when they were towing it, the mechanics did the diagnostic and found wires were faulty and damaged the engine.
I started to see the oil light on the dashboard and i heard a hard sound from the engine so that i changed the oil then after a couple days i saw the light again on with a little bit high temperature, so stooped by a gas station and i added some more oil after i shut the car off and waited to cool the engine down and i started the car, the oil light was gone and the engine sound was smoother then i started to get the same issue every couple days and i used to fix it the same way and I've had the same experience with my previous car which was the same brand but different year band model which i found a recall on the engine after it blown and the agency or the manufacturer changed the engine for free for that car and the current car has the same issues and it's included in the year range for that recall which from 2012 to 2019, that scares me because i drive everyday for rideshare and that can be dangerous for me and my clients who ride with me, also some of them stopped calling me for rides once they knew about that issue. And today i noticed the car beep which i used to hear when i lock the car with the remote has stopped too.

A significant class action settlement, known as the Hyundai Engine II Class Action Settlement, was established to address allegations of engine defects in various Hyundai models. This settlement includes vehicles equipped with the Nu 2.0-liter GDI engine, such as the 2014–2020 Elantra GT. The lawsuit claimed that these engines could suffer from issues like engine seizure, stalling, and potential engine fires. My vehicles engine is the engine listed above and has been experiencing those exact problems. My engine has been stalling and making a knocking noise. A professional mechanic evaluated my vehicle and diagnosed it with first stage engine failure. Engine failure of any kind while driving is extremely dangerous and could lead to sudden stopping on a highway, collision, and result in the loss of life of both the driver and other drivers sharing the road. In addition to the Engine II settlement, there was a separate class action settlement related to the Theta II engines, which are also found in some Hyundai vehicles. This settlement addressed allegations of engine defects that could lead to engine failure. Hyundai Motors is refusing to honor their warranty coverage for my vehicle. They claim their refusal is due to my vehicle having a rebuilt title, however, nowhere on their website or per any other guidelines do they explicitly deny coverage for rebuilt title vehicles. They clearly state that only salvage titles and 'total loss' vehicles will not receive any warranty assistance, which my vehicle was never considered a total loss. Additionally, when speaking to a Bob Howard Hyundai representative, they informed me that they have previously honored warranties for people in my exact situation. The engine in my 2014 Hyundai Elantra GT is the original engine with a matching VIN number and the engine failure is strictly due to the malfunction of said part produced by Hyundai Motors. I have maintained and preformed regular maintenance on this vehicle with receipts.
The engine in my car (Hyundai Elantra gt 2014) basically did everything I read about all the other Hyundai engines doing that are under engine recalls. Years ago it started having misfires, had the catalytic converter or parts of it replaced, sensors, over consuming oil, loud noises when it's lower on oil and eventually it just recently died. Unfortunately it's only 11,000 miles over the extended warranty period to get it replaced. The bad engine stuff basically broke the current catalytic converter and the dealership wants over 10,000 dollars to fix it and replace the engine... not including tax. The worse part is sometime like a year ago I went to a dealership because I had an apt for an oil change. The day before my check engine light turned on. So at the apt while checking in my car I mentioned to the guy taking photos of my car that the check engine light was on and please check it out. I waited two hours for them to give me my keys back and say I didn't make the appointment for the check engine light so they couldn't see what was wrong with it that day. And that had never happened before. At the time I had only been to dealerships to fix my car and The dealerships always agreed to check out the engine light when it was on except for this one time. Felt like I was getting pushed out the door. So I've spent the last year going to other mechanics attempting to fix the check engine light and it always just came back on when I got my car back. Tune ups, spark plugs, cylinder misfires. Elantra GT's are not represented in any of the recall articles I read about online so I felt the need to share my story because I think my car had the same engine as some of the other cars. RIP Elantra GT
Engine failure related to piston slapping in upper motor. 3 months out of warranty and 115,000 miles.
Ticking or knocking in the engine, as many other have described. Engine does not accelerator properly due to this issue, causing safety issues with accelerating to merge or enter traffic. Known defect that should be covered by Hyundai as regular scheduled maintenance has been completed.

The car has little ticks..buzzy sounds, rough idle, decease power, loss in the fuel economy, had regular tune up, but the car stillnot right and could possibly be the computer
roughly 5 months ago i started to hear a ticking/knocking sound. since then it has gotten louder and the car is having issues accelerating. Hyundai refuses to fix it even thought they’ve had a class action for this exact issue.
Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I'm writing out of deep concern and frustration regarding the unrepaired safety recall on my 2014 Hyundai Elantra. Recall #23V651000 warns of an alarming risk of engine compartment fires, yet there's still no fix available from Hyundai. This isn't just a theoretical risk for me. I have no choice but to park my car in a public garage, making the fire hazard much worse. Hyundai's advice to park outside is impossible to follow, leaving me feeling trapped and unsafe. I find it difficult to understand why Hyundai can source parts for new vehicles, yet struggles to prioritize a fix for a potentially life-threatening safety issue affecting existing cars. I urge the NHTSA to take the following actions: * Investigate why this fix is taking so long. People's safety is on the line. * Push Hyundai to find a solution immediately. Each day of delay is unacceptable. * Keep me and other affected owners informed. The lack of updates is adding to the stress. This isn't just about my car. An engine fire in a garage could be devastating. Please act quickly.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving at 40 MPH the brakes became hard and the steering wheel was inoperable. The vehicle caught fire. I believe there was an electrical issue. While driving the car started smoking and my daughter pulled over and the there was fire coming from the engine and after that it just engulfed in flames. Fire was also coming from underneath when 1st started.
Mileage: 120,000
So theirs issues with window ,shaking while in red light, tick sound, was a banging under the hood sound like metal, also an electric sound not sure how to describe it

When I had near 50,000 miles on my car, my car emitted lots of smoke (like severe burning) from the back when I drove on highway. I had to immediately take the car to Hyundai service. They said nothing is wrong with engine. Years later, I started hearing knocking noise from the front and got engine light on twice in the past. The last time was 3 days ago when I drove to the local airport to pick up my son. Someone inspected my car yesterday because Hyundai had no availability until the next month. He advised me to take the car to Hyundai as soon as possible. I took it to Hyundai service and they said nothing is wrong just like the last time years ago. He told me oil was leaking inappropriately and damaged the motor inside. He informed me this is normal with Hyundai vehicles as they used GDI engine. Today Hyundai service charted me the inspection and said nothing is wrong with the engine. I told them I brought the car because knocking noise and engine light. I shouldn't pay even though they found nothing is wrong with the engine. I feel.very unsafe with driving this car. The guy who inspected the car said the motor is damaged due to the engine defect and excessively burn oil. They attempted to charge me for what Hyundai is responsible of ensuring the safety affected by manufacturing issues. Thank you!
The piston rings do not seal leading to increased oil consumption and very low oil. My safety was put at risk because when I pulled out into traffic that was going at a high speed I could not accelerate. There was no warning or indication that this was going on prior to this incident. Yes this has been confirmed by a Hyundai dealership and the component was inspected. There was no warning sign before this incident.
The engine started making a clicking sound, and was running rough. Then shook violently and turned off while I was on the freeway, Then getting very hot. It is defective and the dealer took it in under the t6g campaign but it was denied due to the salvage title for unrelated issues. Now it smokes if I drive it for an hour or two and takes a while to stop smoking afterwards. This car only has 120000 miles. They said it's a goodwill campaign but not a recall so they don't have to honor it. Now it runs for a few minutes but then smokes from the engine so I shut it off.
Hyundai has had numerous engine failures and fires, due to piston slap. Multiple lawsuits and recalls in other countries. Hyundai has a T6G service campaign to replace these engines and they even extended it to unlimited mileage for the first owner. The problem is that they will not honor this unless you are the first owner and you did all of your oil changes at the dealership. They have an 85% rejection rate for claims that have the eligible flaw... That is ridiculous. Why are they able to refuse to fix 85% of these engines that blow up and catch fire prematurely due to a known issue? Please recall these engines. Multiple times my engine has stopped leaving me with no power steering or brakes, one of which almost ended in a collusion on the highway. It took a lot of strength to push the break in to stop the car. The scariest moment of my life. And I knows these are an issue and the dealership even said he sees a bunch of them come in all the time with this issue, and yet until it is an actual recall and I will do nothing about it. Please please for the love of God issue a recall on these, thank you so much NHTSA for keeping automotive industry in check and making sure that our cars are safe and reliable.
My car randomly stalls when driving. I was recently driving the 101 freeway when in the middle of the lane my car stalled while driving roughly 10-15 mph. I noticed in that time my brakes malfunctioned in that when I tried to press on the brakes it did not feel like they were responding. I was able to move over to the shoulder of the freeway thankfully but was panicked an accident was going to happen. I had my car inspected previously in which hyundai said the issues was related to engine coils that had since been replaced and this incident happened after. I currently have my car being inspected by my mechanic to determine possible causes. When the car stalled it flashed the check engine and battery lights on my dashboard.
From a Hyundai dealership, I was sold a 2014 Hyundai Elantra in June of 2022 with a ticking noise. I was told it was normal and would go away with driving over time. It had not. I had the vehicle assessed by a reputable mechanic and then towed to and reassessed by a different Hyundai dealership. Was told the engine has piston slapping and engine is bad (by both). After a year and a half of back and forth, Hyundai has refused to repair or replace the engine or replace the vehicle since I’m not the original owner and it was sold over 100,000 miles on the vehicle. I paid a little over $13,000 for a rock that doesn’t drive. I don’t have $7,000 to replace an engine and I’m on a fixed income. There are lawsuits in other countries, just not in the USA yet. I need help please. The contact stated that the manufacturer has denied assistance due to an expired warranty and prior authorization being denied as well.
Recall
I have 2014 Hyundai Elantra it unsafe to drive put in drive it wouldn’t go forward . It jerky hard to go. Failure of light. Transmission.steer clutch shaft
My vehicle consumes outrageous amounts of oil - more than 1 quart per 1,000 miles. As a result, it is at high risk of seizing, engine failure, or fire. This engine needs to be recalled - there are Facebook groups of hundreds of people with the same exact problem, and Hyundai refuses to cover the engine replacement. Please help us!
While driving over the last month, the car shuts off with no warning. There are no check engine or other lights that come on once it shuts down. There does not appear to be any consistency in the occurences, sometimes while idling, sometimes while driving 40 mph. Up until recently, the car would restart once I put it in neutral, but it now does not restart right away.
Engine light has been on for almost a year with NO prior failure or issues after car hit a dangerous pot hole in the road which caused coil packs and spark plug replacements. After the repair, the engine light stayed on for almost a year and the car has been taken to multiple shops and a Hyundai dealer & diagnosed by Hyundai same answer of "maybe" leak and gas cap being loose. gas cap has been tightened and even replaced few times. Engine light stays on and no one can figure out why . The battery eventually died months later and when battery was replaced engine light came off and then back on days later. same result from mechanics of not knowing true reason engine light is on. 1 month after battery died alternator went out and no signs of knowing and safety concern because engine light stays on but not indicating true reason. 1 day after alternator went out car begin overheating on and off. the engine alert has still been on and never comes on for true reason which can indicate safety concern. problems within vehicle is starting to rise back to back . The signs of a leak but unaware to find is a safety issue
I PURCHASED THE CAR AT A USED CAR DEALERSHIP. I DROVE IT HOME AND THE NEXT DAY THE ENGINE LIGHT LIT UP AND IT STARTED TO RUN ROUGH. WHILE DRIVING IT DOWN THE ROAD THE CAR SHUT DOWN AND I COULD NOT EVEN GET IT OFF THE ROAD. I HAD IT TOWED AND THEY AGREED TO TAKE IT AT THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. AFTER RUNNING DIAGNOSTIC ON IT THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE AND THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL AND THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. AFTER PAYING 9500.00 FOR THIS VEHICLE AND IT DYING LEAVING ME STRANDED ON THE ROAD. I HAVE NO VEHICLE.
I was driving home on april 13, 2023 when the power seemed to leave my car & steering & brakes felt like they weren't working right like I had no control. The battery & oil change lights came on. I was scared & didn't know what to do but then a min or so later I was able to get enough control to direct it into a parking lot across from my house & turned off the engine. When I turned the car back on the 2 warning lights were gone & I was able to drive it across the street. I had been hearing a noise under the hood & wasn't sure if it was a belt or something. A mechanic said the belts, hoses etc were good but he thinks that noise was my engine rod bearings going & he had dealt with more Hyundai engine problems recently. I had Hyundai dealership check my engine & they said my connecting rod bearings are bad & I need new engine. They said this is not covered under their extended warranty & I am over the warranty miles & they won't help in any way. This is a bad engine & I have met other Hyundai owners in same situation. & it wasn't until I read an article where another Hyundai driver experienced the same thing I did on April 13 before her engine died on a highway that I connected that event with a bad engine so I believe that is what happened to me on April 13 except my engine didn't completely die on me. This is a safety issue if a car engine stops working while driving on a road. I have receipts from everything I have done to my car & you can tell it wasn't lack of care that caused this engine failure. It is engine defects I believe are causing them. Please investigate the problem & keep Hyundai & Kia drivers & drivers around them safe. And get Hyundai to do right by their customers & replace these defective engines. I can show invoice where Hyundai declined providing assistance because of miles as 2nd owner but service man only hand wrote problem with engine was connecting rod bearings on it. He didn't include it on printed invoice. Hyundai has photos & info.
Scored cylinder walls and needing a full motor replacement before the engine just seizes
I was driving the vehicle normally down the highway. When I exited the highway, I came to a stop light and made a complete stop at which point the engine stalled. I restarted the vehicle, the check engine light appeared, but I couldn’t get it to register any RPMs and I was left stranded in a busy intersection until help arrived.
My 2014 Elantra has a blinking check engine light on. This is an ongoing problem. The dealership diagnostic keeps saying that it is a misfire and I have paid to have it fixed. Change all the plugs twice and the check engine light is back blinking. I can't drive it at all. Each time this happened I was in the middle of traffic when I was forced to try to pull over. Very dangerous situation.
Piston slapping, engine failing. First diagnosed with Christian Auto Brothers of Concord, NC in December of 2022; then advised to tow to my local Modern Hyundai Dealer in Concord, NC 12:30/22. Same diagnostics, same result. *Hyundai extended their warranty to 140,000 miles for this issue, but refuse to fix since I’m not the original owner. Purchased June 2022 from Keffer Hyundai Dealership in Charlotte, NC.
The oil light is blinking and car repeatedly shuts off while driving mostly when going 25-45mph. When it shuts off I have to turn it off take the key out and turn it back on until the next time it happens. This usually occurs within an 20 minutes of driving. My safety was at risk because of other cars behind me going speed limit while car automatically shuts off. Car was bought on carvana no local dealer but have taken it to multiple shops and they are shocked to hear of no recall. The car has not been inspected by police insurance but local mechanic shops. Oil light blinks while driving constantly from start to finish while car shuts off steady oil engine and battery light on.
Engine has a load ticking noise, mechanic said he thought it was the lifters. The vehicle also stalls while driving; After accelerating and reaching cruising speed it will stall as you ease off accelerator. It has not done it using with cruise control.
my car will stall randomly at stop signs and red lights with absolutely no warning. it’s super dangerous and has almost caused a wreck. i have taken it to mechanic and no codes are being thrown and it’s showing nothing is wrong. it’s a matter of time a accident happens and someone gets hurt. I would definitely like to figure this out!
My car started cutting off while driving no warning lights on. I had a diagnostic test done and they didn’t find anything wrong. I’m so confused about what’s going on with this car but it’s very dangerous to drive on the highway. I have had three service checks on my car and it still cuts off in the middle of traffic. I had my brakes and rotors replaced because everytime I hit a pot hole or bump in the road my brake pad gets hard and I can’t push it to stop but after getting them replaced it still does the same thing.
Car started to shut down with no warning about a month ago. Took it to neighborhood garage and they couldn't figure it out . They called a Hyundai service department and they said they have seen the problem and it is a CR-Sensor. They (Hyundai service dept) sent the part to my garage and they made the repair. Car worked fine until a few days ago when it shut down again with no warning. This can be a serious safety issue if driving on a highway at highway speeds when it shuts down. HOWEVER IT DOES START UP RIGHT AFTER THE ENGINE STOPS .
ENGINE STALL WHILE DRIVING TWICE . ENGILE OIL WAS SERVICED 3 DAYS BEFORE THE INCIDENT . OIL LEVEL IS GOOD OIL INDICATION WAS FLASHING FOR 3 SECONDS WITH ENGINE TICKING BEFORE STALLING. LUCKILY I WASNT DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY . A CAR SHOULD NEVER SUDDENLY DIE WHILE DRIVING WITH NO WARNINGS .
There is a significant problem with this car where the check engine and dashboard lights flicker on and then the car stalls and loses all power immediately. This has happened multiple times, including on the highway, which was a significant safety hazard. Upon taking the car to a Hyundai dealer, they indicated problems with the engine that require an engine replacement that would cost on the order of $8,000-9,000. Upon further research, we found two class action settlements related to engine problems for Hyundai vehicles of this type/age, but Hyundai says this vehicle is not covered due to mileage of 101,400.
My engine has a hole in the block and the starter completely blew up. Noone can explain how this has happened. The car shop wants $12,000 to repair this. The car never leaked any oil until the day it blew up on me. No check engine light ever came on, no oil light ever came on.
My engine failed as I was traveling on a highway, I was going around 80 MPH. This was very dangerous as I had other cars behind me and to the right of me, I was in the left lane. I had to gradually move over from the far left lane into the shoulder on the right side. It was extremely unsafe. UNKNOWN. UNKNOWN. My engine warning light became active.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while at a stop when the contact accelerated to move forward and the vehicle accelerated at high speed and the contact noticed white smoke was coming from the exhaust of the vehicle. An independent mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the rings around the engine needed to be replaced and that the vehicle had an oil leak, The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000.
Mileage: 120,000
I noticed a rattling noise while accelerating in second and third gear under my car in the spring. I took it in to a repair shop and they resecured an under tray but otherwise did not seem concerned. The rattling noise continued. After driving on a longer trip on the highway recently the rattling became more frequent and intense, causing the whole car to shake. I also had difficulty accelerating above about 50 mph. I took my car in to a different shop the following day. They discovered that there was a misfire occurring in cylinder 3, causing buildup in the exhaust system (the rattling that I noticed) and which caused the catalytic converter to go bad, which I had to pay to replace. Throughout this entire time, my check engine light never came on, although it illuminated normally when turning on the car. The lack of a warning via check engine light when the misfire began occurring caused the converter to go bad, resulting in a very costly repair for me.
2014 Hyundai Elantra GT routinely maintained and serviced as by the Hyundai dealership (never missed a service). Vehicle starting making a clicking/thudding sound. After getting it looked at, the technician said it is an engine issue and the engine is shot. The technician said that the engine will probably quit in the next month or so. The vehicle has only 100,000 miles on it and has been serviced by the dealership throughout ownership. This is a huge problem and Hyundai needs to step up and have this resolved. There needs to be a recall on the engine.
My engine light came on yesterday morning and started acting different. I went to a auto mechanic who after inspection told me my engine failed. This car is not that old and has had regular maintenance. I see now that many people have experienced this problem. I can't afford another car and in fact still paying for this one. What can I do?
2014 Hyundai Elantra SE 1.8 routinely maintained and serviced as recommended by service manual. Vehicle was on city streets when it suddenly stalled with no warning lights or indication. Event was accompanied by a knocking sound from the engine area. Ignition cycle makes the condition go away temporarily. Initially this was a rare occurrence. But within weeks the frequency of this engine shutdown at medium, slow, fast speeds increased greatly. Now the vehicle does not operational with less than 100,000 miles. Considering that there are so many complaints about this same problem, this needs to be a recall and Hyundai needs to take responsibility for this problem.
My car started ticking and making loud noise. The next day took to the dealer to have it looked it. I stopped at a light and the car stopped any wouldn’t go . It was running but no power, the said was the engine . It’s been at the dealer since beginning July 2022 and they are saying could be October or November before they can work on it . The car only had 50k miles on it and I only purchased it 6 months ago .
The car is stalling with no warning lights. The engine would quit running and I would have coat it into a safe spot, this happened while I was crossing an intersection and driving down the road at 35 MPH or less. I would have to turn the key off and then turn it to start and it would suddenly restart only to stall again. It is not the battery at all. My dad is a mechanic himself and pinpointed the issue to the engine and he said he has never seen an engine quit and restart like this without warning from the check engine light. He believes that it did not fail because of wear and tear but rather from a defect in the engine. He further expanded that the defect can also be connected to a faulty computer system not being able to recognize the engine failure. He feel Hyundai needs to recognize these complaints and take them seriously. Hyundai needs to recall these cars and fix the problem.
Engine has failed at 67,000 and resembles the 2018 class action lawsuit. Dealership/Hyundai Motor will not fix it because vehicle is not in a "cold weather state" even though it is a known issue in the car. I have had the vehicle for not even four years, the vehicle came from a cold weather state where it spent over half the vehicle life and 1/3 of its miles.
Engine was experiencing ticking/knocking. Car stalled on freeway, and now the Engine must be replaced. Identical problem as seen in the 2018 class action lawsuit. Car experiencing same symptoms and confirmed by mechanic, despite not being in a cold-weather state.
My car stalled in the middle of driving, had to roll onto a side street, it also stalled or lost pier while getting into a main highway, almost causing an accident, Hyundai claimed they couldn’t find anything wrong, my car is now at the dealer for a faulty engine, waiting for a new engine at 49000 miles
Good Morning, This model and year of vehicle has had so many defects. I have paid hundreds of dollars over simple vehicle factors that Hyundai Manufacturers should really assess while pushing them to the market. This mode has had many brake light defect all consisting of the electrical wiring. I have changed MANY times the Brie lights bulbs only for them to blowout within a week. This is a roadway safety issue. Worse of all the ENGINE Is Faulty and the vehicles for this specific year tend to seize up or blowout due to the vehicle burning oil WAY BEFORE 3000 miles. I’ve had to change oil now every month because the engine will literally start making a screeching noise under the hood. Only to realize that the car has zero oil yet zero leaks under 1000 miles of driven. The dealership recently changed my oil and filter and after 1,500 miles I realized the engine making this noise for the 3rd time. I have now filed a complaint with their head office, to only have them dismiss me and not care for the safety of others. I am most definitely not the first person that owns this model and has been phasing with this SAFETY problem. Please help us out and investigate this matter. This is not ethical practice and we should not be worried about our safety on a manufacturing defect.
I had my vehicle serviced to diagnose a ticking problem I had. I was told that it's an engine issue & known to Hyundai. As I was traveling 177 miles from home, the engine lost power and failed. Thankfully it didn't cause an accident. My engine has less than 100,000 miles!!! This should not happen and every engine that experiences this ought to be replaced through a recall!! Probably, most people don't even realize this is a problem and let themselves be taken advantage of.
I purchased this vehicle from Duncan Hyundai in Christiansburg VA on 11/13/2021. When I purchased the vehicle it had 90,588 miles on it. I started hearing a knocking sound coming from the engine in late January - early February 2022 only 2-3 months of having the car. The engine light came on and the car was also smoking some. We checked the oil in the vehicle and it was empty. We put a quart in the vehicle to take it to the dealership. We were told that yes, the vehicle in fact did not have any oil in it. I asked them well were did the oil go? Is there a leak or something? Oil just doesn't disappear like that. The mileage on the car at that time was 93,543. It wasn't even due for an oil change. I was told that this particular vehicle burns oil and every thousand miles & we will have to add a quart to it at that time. We are now monitoring that. I see that Hyundai has an open recall for this same knocking sound and burning oil on the 2019-2020 models. My 2014 is having the same problem and now I will have to take it back and forth to the dealership to make sure they monitor and hopefully eventually fix the problem for me. Again all they said at the moment was add a quart every thousand miles. In a month period (March) I have had to add 2.5 quarts to the vehicle. The vehicle now has a total of 94,916 miles on it. In a total of 1,373 miles it burned 2.5 quarts. What the dealership said about a quart every thousand miles was not correct. It has burned double that amount.
Car has shut off while driving twice. Engine was replaced in 2021 for the same issues. First incident occurred while attempting to park after driving 40mins Second incident occurred while at a red light. The car also has problems starting up.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal ticking sound coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that an engine replacement was needed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 129,000.
Mileage: 129,000
Rob bearing failure, caused my vehicle to lose power and stall while driving highway speeds almost causing a collision.
Car is equipped with NU 2.0 Engine. In September 2019, the Elantra began making a ticking or knocking noise at start up and driving. Unsure what this was, we took it to the dealership where we bought it 2 years prior as it was due for its oil change. There was no check engine light when we discovered this problem. When the tech drained the oil, he claimed there was metal shavings in the oil (he saved them in a bottle for us) and this was due to the knocking engine (piston slap) we had described to the tech. The car had just hit the 80,000 mile mark so this was baffling to us. We had since parked it as we did not have the money to repair the engine. This is a HUGE safety issue. There's a lawsuit against Hyundai for the 1.8 NU Elantra Engines but not the 2.0? It's experiencing the same exact issue but Hyundai will NOT acknowledge their 2.0 NU engines. This is wildly dangerous to the public who got the green light to keep driving their 2.0 engines. We had it towed to Maryland from Washington State as we had moved. It's currently at 1706 Massey Blvd, Hagerstown, MD 21740. It has been there since December of 2019. The engine had been replaced but the dealership wants over $3,000 in repairs. They will not release the car to us until we pay it. The only warning was the noise itself. No lamps, lights or any indication of any fault.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, she heard an abnormal loud slapping and ticking sound coming from the engine. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure recurred mostly in the cold weather and increasingly while depressing the accelerator pedal while driving. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the failure was a known failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 128,000.

Engine has loud ticking sound. Engine also would stall without warning. No warning lights would come on dashboard to indicate issue. Dealership said there was nothing wrong with the car.
2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO ENGINE FAILURE. THE CONSUMER STATED THE ENGINE SEIZED WITHOUT WARNING. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR PARTS, LEAVING THE CONSUMER WITH LABOR COST OF $3,000.00. THE CONSUMER DECLINED THE OFFER, STATING THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD PAY THE COST OF LABOR AS WELL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the engine was making a slapping noise. The contact owns a mechanic shop; and had the vehicle diagnosed. The mechanic determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then towed to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with needing the engine replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, he heard abnormal knocking and ticking sounds coming from the engine. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure would also occur while driving. The contact became aware of TSB Number: 21-01-23H-3 for engine failure. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that his vehicle could not be repaired under the TSB because the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000

I financed my 2014 Elantra a few months ago in September and this engine is failing
Motor failed while driving on the highway at cruising speed and car did not lose electrical power. This Elantra has been properly maintenanced as per manufacturer specifications no check engine or other dash lights present prior to the failure.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would suddenly shut off and a knocking noise was present coming from the engine. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the engine was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 169,000.

Passing a car on the highway when the Elantra died. Pulled over on the side of the road and all service lights came on. Fire started coming up from the hood. Barely got out of the car before the entire car was engulfed in flames.
The engine block blew, a few days after getting an oil change and seeing a mechanic about the ticking sound in the engine. 53k miles on it. I was told by the dealerships service/mechanic shop as well as other mechanics that there was a hole in the engine. The car had starting issues along with a ticking or clapping sound in the engine, mechanics couldn't figure it out, the last time it ran I turned the engine off to get gas and started it again going uphill, it didn't go past 20mph uphill before I heard the engine shutoff, I pulled over, tried to start it and the engine smoked and popped.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Yes. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Some, but we were not on a highway. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Reproduced as heard before yes, 7 plus times. No independent service or dependent. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not yet as in the process of trying via our Hyundai Crestmont Service. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning of lights or lamps. The rest described briefly below. Our vehicle is a Hyundai; Vin # [XXX], year 2014, purchased 3/22/15, mileage 16,000 or so On April 1, 2021, snow of 5-7 inches and a cold snap of 41 degrees happened in Cleveland Ohio where we were uncostumarily were out and about, we audibly witnessed the noise under the hood and felt the right side brakes failure. I have experienced these noises at least 7 previous times. And the noises seem to come from the drivers side to midland to lower area of car. We carry an Extended Power Train Warranty, that by definition implies it kicks in when the Factory Power Train has expired. Good until 2024 or so? Willing to follow the advice on what is needed. It can only be driven on the back roads at slower pace with less public endangering. Please bear in mind that driving to Hyundai Crestmont in Brunswick is unattainable, due to safety issues betting there. We feel uncomfortable driving on highways and freeways, that places our lives in danger but also that of the public with the engine ceasing potential. The car is in danger of seising itself which will render it destroyed and not repairable. Documentation of reporting dating back to 2018, 2019 and April 1, 2021, and further. While driving the car stalls and you have no steering power or brakes to stop. I was able to coast to get out of the way of oncoming traffic. Restart car again and as I was braking for a stop light the car stopped again. To keep from rear ending another vehicle I had to switch lane and pull off of road. No warning lights came on the car just stopped. The car would start again as if everything is okay, but stall as you slow or come to a stop at a stop light. There is a total of 13 complaints on "Car Complaints.com" for this same issue. Below are some of the complaints on this website: "Driving the car in town at slow speeds, usually around 15-25 miles an hour, with rpms at about 1250. First noticed an issue with extremely jerky driving, but added gas and the problem went away, and I thought it was a one time thing. About a week later, it happened again. Then, a few days later, the car shut off as I was driving through a parking lot. I set up an appointment with the dealership for a week later. In that week, the car died while driving through town twice, and also as I was driving into work once. It is the smoothest shutoff I have ever experienced, only the engine dies, and it starts right up once I stop and put it in park. I don't even notice the engine turn off until I try to press the gas." "The car died 4 times, the engine completely shut off. It would throttle by itself at lights or in the drive thru.I could not drive up until no one was in front of me because the car would hesitate then jerk forward. Almost got hit from behind making a right turn because the car would not accelerate with oncoming traffic approaching from behind." "Were on a very busy street and the car just died. Very hot outside, people backed up behind us. Could start the car, but when lift off the break, it would die again. Police helped us push it off the busy road into a parking lot. Our concerns - this is a new car and a part goes bad? One that makes the car quit? What if it had happen
THE CAR HAD A RATTLE OR CLICK IN THE FRONT END FOR YEARS BUT MECHANICS HAD CLEARED THAT NO CONCERN. AT 120000 MILES ON TRIP OUT OF TOWN AND WITHOUT WARNING, THE CAR LOCKED UP AND WOULDN'T DRIVE ANYMORE ON A BUSY INTERSTATE!! WE HAD IT TOWED TO MECHANIC AND WAS INFORMED THAT ENGINE LOCKED UP AND WOULD NO LONGER START! CAR IS STILL OUT OF TOWN! AND NOW WE HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHETHER REPLACE IT OR SELL IT, SEVERAL HOURS AWAY FROM OUR HOME! THERE IS A CIVIL LAWYER THAT CONTACTED ME REGARDING A LAW SUIT FOR THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN OCCURRING. HOWEVER, OUR CAR DOESN'T QUALIFY BECAUSE IT'S OVER 100,000 MILES!!:/ PLEASE CONSIDER THIS ISSUE FOR RECALL BECAUSE THIS IS A RECURRING ISSUE THAT I AM FINDING ALL OVER THE INTERNET AND IT'S A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE!!!

JUST OVER 100,000 MILES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. HAD THE REPAIRS COMPLETED, THEN THE ENGINE BLEW COMPLETELY.

MY 2014 HYUNDIA ELANTRA SPORT 2.0L ENGINE THREW A ROD WITH ONLY 101300 MILES. THE CAR HAD A LOT OF VALUE BECAUSE IT WAS RUNNING GREAT AND WAS IN BETTER THAN GOOD CONDITION UNTIL NOW. TO REPLACE THE ENGINE WAS GOING TO COST BETWEEN $8K TO $10K. READING ON THE INTERNET HYUNDIA 2.0L ENGINES ARE EXPERIENCING A LOT OF ENGINE FAILURES LIKE THIS. THE MECHANIC SHOP WHERE I TOOK IT CALLED TWO HYUNDI-KIA DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF MY ELANTRA ENGINE WAS UNDER HYUNDIA RECALL, BOTH SAID IT WASN'T. NOW I AM FORCED TO LOOK FOR A NEW CAR AND FIGURE OUT HOW TO RECOUP SOME LOSS FROM MY ELTANTRA. IN THE FUTURE I WILL NEVER CONSIDER ANOTHER HYUNDIA-KIA CAR BECAUSE OF ENGINE ISSUES.

I BOUGHTBMY CAR AND ANOIT 1 MONTH AFTER IT STARTED HAVING A TICKING NOISE. ALSO THE CAR WILL KINDA STALL WHEN I'M GETTING ON THE HIGHWAY WHERE I CAN'T GET OVER 45 MPH. ALSO THE SYMBOL WITH THE (!) KEEP COMING ON AND THEN BLINKING REALLY FAST. AND THE FRONT END KINDA SHAKES WHEN IT DOES THAT
Mileage: 101,000
AFTER DRIVING FOR AN HOUR OR SO THE CAR WILL SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF A TRIP. NO WARNING, JUST A QUICK ENGINE SHUT OFF ON THE HIGHWAY, WHICH FORCES ME TO SHIFT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL TO CRANK IT BACK UP. THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION WHEN THIS OCCURS, AND IT'S A SEVERE SAFETY PROBLEM.
Mileage: 150,000
I HAVE MADE NUMEROUS OIL CHANGES AND I WAS DRIVING HOME ONE NIGHT. THE CAR LEFT SIDE FRONT TIRE STARTED SCREECHING AND THE CAR KEPT JERKING. THEN THERE WAS A LOUD KNOCKING COMING FROM THE ENGINE. I DROVE IT THE NEXT DAY AND WAS ON MY WAY HOME AND AS SOON AS I PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY, THE CAR STALLED AND WILL NOT CRANK UP AT ALL.

TROUBLES WITH THE POWER/BATTERY. TROUBLES STARTED AROUND 80K MILES. AT FIRST THE BATTERY WAS A SUSPICION. A NEW BATTERY WAS BOUGHT AND THEN WE WERE TOLD A SPECIFIC BATTERY WAS NEEDED WHICH WE OBTAINED AND PUT INTO THE CAR. I AM UNSURE IF THE BATTERY IS THE ISSUE (AT THIS POINT I DON'T THINK IT IS). RECENTLY, THE CAR AT ABOUT 86K MILES, HAS HAD TIMES WHERE IT DOES NOT START. FOR EXAMPLE, TIMES WHERE WE GO TO THE STORE OR EVEN LEFT OVERNIGHT, THE CAR WILL NOT TURN ON. NO SIGN OF LIFE AT ALL. WE WAIT A WHILE THEN TRY IT AGAIN. AFTER A WHILE, THE CAR EVENTUALLY TURNS ON BUT THERE IS NO TELLING HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE. THERE HAVE BEEN OCCASIONS WHERE WE ARE DRIVING AND THE DASH BOARD LIGHTS WILL ALL TURN ON AT ONCE THEN TURN OFF. OTHER TIMES WE WILL BE DRIVING AND THE RADIO/CLOCK SCREEN WILL RANDOMLY TURN OFF AND ON AS IF THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF. AT THIS POINT WE ARE WORRIED WE WILL BE STRANDED IF WE TAKE THIS CAR OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY. THE CAR HAS NOT TURNED ON WHILE AT HOME, VISITING OUT IN THE COMMUNITY, AND AT WORK. THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH AND RADIO FACE ACTS UP WHILE DRIVING. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS EVER CAME ON.

PURCHASED A USED 2014 1.8L ELANTRA PRIVATE PARTY AND FOUND PISTON SLAP IN COLD START. LOOKING ONLINE IT APPEARS TO BE A PERVASIVE ISSUE AND HYUNDAI IS CARING FOR CANADIAN BUT NOT AMERICAN OWNERS. RECALL OF FAULTY MOTORS NEEDED. HYUNDAI IS FALSLY CLAIMING 10YEAR 100,000 MILE WARRANTY THAT IS NOT SUPPORTED EITHER
Mileage: 60,660
2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA - WHEN THE VEHICLE IS AT LOW SPEED (UNDER 30), AND AFTER WARMING UP IT SHUTS OFF WITH NO NOISE, NO WARNING IT JUST SHUTS OFF. THERE WAS ONE KNOCKING IDLING AT A STOP LIGHT JUST BEFORE IT SHUT OFF. BUT FOR BOTH MY DAUGHTER AND MYSELF IT SHUT OFF WITH NO WARNING. THERE ARE NO CHECK ENGINE OR WARNING LIGHTS ON, IT IS NOT THROWING A CODE. THE DEALER HAS SAID THERE IS SLUDGE IN THE ENGINE AND THAT THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED - IN A 2014 WITH 145K, SINGLE OWNER. IN READING ONLINE, THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT OPEN - BROWN V HYUNDAI WHERE MULTIPLE OWNERS HAVE REPORTED THE EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS AND DEALER RESOLUTION BUT THERE IS A KNOW PISTON DEFECT THAT IS CAUSING THIS PROBLEM. NO TSB ISSUED IN US BUT THEY DID IN CANADA FOR THE SAME PROBLEM.

MY 2014 ELANTRA HAS THE EXACT SAME ROD BEARING PROBLEM NOTED IN THE RECENT HYUNDAI RECALL THAT AFFECTS THE SONATA, SANTE FE AND VOLOSCTER. YET IT IS NOT IDENTIFIED. I HAVE A FRIEND WITH A 2012 ELANTRA THAT WAS ALSO AFFECTED AND SHE SAID HERS IS COVERED.

THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A TICKING NOISE AS EARLY AS 40K MILES. IT RAN OK AND I WAS LEAD TO BELIEVE THIS WAS "NORMAL" FROM THE DEALERSHIP. I MAINTAINED THE VEHICLE AS REQUIRED UNTIL 88K WHILE NOTICING MORE AND MORE OIL WAS BEING CONSUMED. AFTER SLOWING DOWN AND TURNING FROM A HIGHWAY ON TO A COUNTY ROAD, THE AUTOMATIC VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHIFT ERRATICALLY AND COULD NOT GO FASTER THAN 40MPH AND THEN THE ENGINE TURNED OFF. I MANAGED TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHILE THIS OCCURRED. THE ENGINE STARTED, BUT DRIVING BUT THE GEARS WOULD NOT SHIFT PROPERLY CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. IN THE DEALERSHIP, THE DIAGNOSIS WAS A NEW ENGINE. I AM THE SECOND OWNER AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS INITIALLY NOTHING COULD BE DONE UNDER WARRANTEE WITH THE MILEAGE (WHILE SUGGESTING I MUST HAVE WENT WAY TOO LONG BETWEEN OIL CHANGES.....NOT EVEN CLOSE TO CORRECT). THE DEALERSHIP MADE AN APPEAL TO HYUNDAI AND OFFERED TO PAY FOR HALF OF THE COST OF A NEW ENGINE. SO I AM SUPPOSED TO BE HAPPY PAYING ONLY $4200. THE NEW ENGINE DOES NOT HAVE A TICKING SOUND AND I HIGHLY SUSPECT THAT WAS THE START OF THE PROBLEM BEFORE. I'M SEEING THE "TICKING" SOUND IN MANY OF THE COMPLAINTS AND CAN'T BELIEVE A RECALL STILL HASN'T BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS. I DON'T TRUST THIS CAR OR HYUNDAI TO DO THE RIGHT THING ON THEIR OWN.
Mileage: 85,000
ENGINE RUNNING VERY POOR ALWAYS MAINTENANCED VERY LOUD TICKING LOUD NOISE THAT FROM 30 000 MILES WAS TOLD FROM DEALER THAT WAS NORMAL. NOW I'M BEING TOLD ITS ENGINE FAILURE THATS MANUFACTURED ISSUE. WAS CITY DRIVING WHEN ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED AND TOTALLY LOSE OF CONTROL AND ACCELERATION.
PURCHASED THIS CAR USED AND WITHIN TWO YEARS AT 80K THE ENGINE IS DONE. ALWAYS TROUBLES EVEN BEFORE ...OIL AND CONNECTIVITY ISSUES BEFOREHAND, SHOP HAD 3X, PAID MY 100 DEDUCTIBLE 3X BECAUSE I HAD PURCHASED 3K WARRANTY ADDITIONALLY AT THE TIME OF SALE. SO AS IT STANDS NOW, I HAVE NO CAR AND OWE 8K ON A LOAN. HYUNDAI WANTS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE RECALLED ENGINE THAT WAS SO CALLED REPAIRED, I AM NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER, THEY STATE. MY WARRANTY COMPANY SAYS ONLY PAYING FOR VALUE OF CAR AND THEN YOUR WARRANTY WITH US IS VOID. THE AMOUNT THEY ALLOW IS ONLY FOR A USED ENGINE, WHY WOULD I BUY ANOTHER USED ENGINE WITH THE SAME ISSUES WITH NO WARRANTY COVERAGE, NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THE SHOP LOOKED FOR A MONTH AND TO NO AVAIL WAS THERE A USED MOTOR IN THE USA...HUMMMM, I WONDER WHY? SO TO BUY A NEW ONE, YOU GO OVERSEAS AND THAT WOULD COST ME 3K MORE ON TOP OF THE WARRENTY PAY OUT AND 6 WEEKS OUT LEAD TIME. I CANT BELIEVE WITH ALL THE ISSUES PEOPLE HAVE AND THE MORE AND MORE RECALLS THEY ARE DOING FOR ENGINES AND FIRERS THEY ARE NOT CONNECTED TO THESE CARS AS WELL. I AM NOW OUT 8K ON MY LOAN AND NO CAR. I WILL NEVER EVER PURCHASE OR HAVE A GOOD THING TO SAY ABOUT HYUNDAI OR KIA...EVER !!! THIS IS COST ME SO MY TIME AND MONEY AND AGGRAVATION I FEEL LIKE GOING TO MY LOCAL NEWS WITH MY STRORY, THIS IS TOTALLY WRONG!

ENGINE THROUGH A CYLINDER, AND ROD THROUGH THE BLOCK. COMPLETELY BLOW, AND NEEDING A FULL REPLACEMENT. VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES AND ENGINES AS IT HAS COME TO BE KNOW.
Mileage: 125,140
I PURCHASED THIS CAR NEW. THE ENGINE HAS STALLED WHILE TRYING TO ACCELERATE SEVERAL TIMES SINCE I HAVE HAD THIS CAR. THIS STARTED THE FIRST YEAR OR SO THAT I HAD IT. HYUNDAI HAS CHECKED WHILE UNDER WARRANTY AND SAID THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. ONCE I WAS TOLD THAT THE COMPUTER NEEDED TO BE RESET. I HAVE HAD REGULAR MAINTENANCE OVER THE LIFE OF THE CAR. THERE ARE NOW JUST OVER 110,000 MILES ON THE CAR. I RECENTLY WAS DRIVING ON A SECONDARY ROAD A FEW BLOCKS FROM HOME. THE CAR MADE A SCREECHING SOUND, ALMOST STALLED, AND THEN THERE WAS AN ENGINE TICKING NOISE. NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. I HAD IT TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC THAT I TRUST. I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD NEED NEW ENGINE BECAUSE IT SOUNDED LIKE THERE WAS LOOSE METAL IN THE ENGINE. I HAVE ALSO READ THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE IN HYUNDAI 2.0L ENGINES. THIS CAR HAS MOSTLY HIGHWAY MILES ON IT. IT HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED AND HAS ALWAYS HAD THE OIL CHANGED BEFORE THE MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDED MILEAGE. I THINK THIS ENGINE SHOULD STILL BE COVERED AS IF IT IS UNDER WARRANTY. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT NOT ENOUGH OF THE ELANTRA GT (I THINK MOST PEOPLE BUY THE COUPE WHICH HAS A DIFFERENT ENGINE) HAVE BEEN SOLD TO CREATE A RECALL. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE THAT MANY OF THE ONES THAT HAVE BEEN PURCHASED HAVE BEEN TRADED IN. OVER THE PAST 3 TO 4 YEARS, I HAVE RECEIVED NUMEROUS LETTERS AND CARDS FROM HYUNDAI. THEY SPECIFICALLY SAID THAT THEY NEEDED ME TO TRADE IN MY ELANTRA GT AND THEY WOULD OFFER ME TOP DOLLAR ON A TRADE IN OR TRADE UP. I NOW THINK THEY WANTED MY CAR BACK BECAUSE THEY KNEW THIS ENGINE HAD PROBLEMS AND HOPED THEY COULD JUST SELL ME A DIFFERENT CAR. I JUST PAID THIS CAR OFF AND INTENDED TO DRIVE IT SEVERAL MORE YEARS. THIS IS A FAULTY ENGINE. NO CAR THAT HAS BEEN MAINTAINED SHOULD HAVE THIS HAPPEN. I STILL HAVE A JEEP I BOUGHT IN 1994 WITH OVER 200K MILES AND IT RUNS GREAT! THIS ENGINE SHOULD BE RECALLED OR AT LEAST INVESTIGATED

MY CAR IS ONLY 6 YEARS OLD AND IT EATS OIL . MY DAUGHTER IN BETWEENNOIL CHANGES HAD TO PUT 2 QUARTS IN THE CAR. WE USE SYNTHETIC OIL . THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR SOME TIME NOW TILL I TOLD MY FAMILY AND THEY MENTIONED HYUNDAI HAD A RECALL. I DONT SEE ONE FOR MY CAR BUT THERE OBVIOUSLY IS AN ISSUE.

I WAS TURNING INTO A PARKING SPACE AT MY WORK AND ALMOST AT A COMPLETE STOP WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY REVVED AND ACCELERATED, CAUSING MY CAR TO JUMP THE CURB AND HIT A LIGHT POLE. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE THE WHOLE TIME AS I WAS COMING TO A STOP. IT HAPPENED SO FAST. ONE MINUTE I WAS PARKING AND THE NEXT SECOND I HIT THE POLE. I SUSTAIN SEVERAL INJURIES AND AM WAITING TO HEAR ABOUT MY CAR.

RANDOMLY DOES NOT START/TURNOVER. SOMETIMES TAKE UP TO 4 TRIES TO GET CAR STARTED. LOUD RATTLE/METAL SOUND WHEN STARTING CAR. DIFFICULTY SPEEDING UP, ESPECIALLY WHEN ENTERING OR SWITCHING LANES ON HIGHWAY/EXPRESSWAY. BURNING OIL RAPIDLY WHILE IN MOTION. CAR BURNS THROUGH OIL BUT THE CHECK OIL LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON WHEN IN MOTION OR STATIONARY. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT RANDOMLY GOES ON AND OFF.
ENGINE HAS ROUGH IDLE SINCE I GOT IT I BELIEVE IT HAS KNOCK ENGINE ISSUES AND SHOULD BE ON THE RECALL LIST I HAVE REPLACED ENGINE COILS INJECTION SYSTEM CLEANING THE RPM AT IDLE IS SO ROUGH MY TRANSMIT FLUID WHEN I HAD MY METER PLUGGED IN IS SO HOT I'M AFRAID OF A FIRE. BUT HYUNDAI I'VE HAD SUCH BAD EXPERIENCE I'M AFRAID OF THE RUN AROUND I JUST WANT IT REPLACES FIXES IT IS FAULTY ENGINE NOW IT SURGES. I DON'T WANT TO DIE FOR THIS MYSTERY HYUNDAI ENGINE ISSUE. *TR

THE CAR WAS IN MOTION ON A STREET. IT KEPT JUMPING AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE, THE STEERING WHEEL GOT REALLY HARD TO MOVE. IT MAKES A CLICKING NOISE WHEN I TRY TO TURN IT ON, WHEN I TURN ON THE CAR WHITE SMOKE THAT SMELLS REALLY STRONG STARTS COMING OUT OF THE EXHAUST AND THE CAR WON'T DRIVE, IF I PUT IT ON DRIVE IT JUMPS A LOT AND TURNS OFF BY ITSELF. I HAVE READ AN ARTICLE IN WHICH MANY USERS OF THE HYUNDAI ELANTRA FROM THE YEARS 2011 TO 2015 HAVE THIS SAME MOTOR ISSUES. SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT WITH THE ENGINE. EVEN BEFORE THIS HAPPENED, THE STEERING WHEEL FEELS REALLY ROUGH, ITS NOT SMOOTH ITS NOT EASY TO MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL ESPECIALLY WHEN MAKING A U- TURN OR TURNING ON A STREET, I HAVE TO PULL REALLY HARD TO MAKE TURNS, I DON'T THINK THIS IS SAFE. *TR

I WAS DRIVING ON A STATE ROADWAY, A REVVED THE ENGINE A BIT TO GET OVER A SMALL HILL, AND HEARD LOUD FAN LIKE NOISES, SPUTTERING, AND ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS WENT ON. NO SMOKE CAME OUT OF THE CAR, IT LITERALLY SPUTTERED TO A STOP. I TRIED TO START IT, IT TURNED OVER ONCE AND THAT WAS IT. TRIED HOOKING CABLES TO JUMP IT, EVEN BOUGHT A NEW BATTERY. AFTER CHANGING SPARK PLUGS, IT WAS DETERMINED ONE BLEW. WE TRIED TO REPLACE, SAME THING HAPPENED, THE ENGINE IS SHOT, THE DEALER IS CLAIMING $7,000 TO FIX THIS, AND I'M SEEING THERE ARE ISSUES WITH THE ENGINE, NOT JUST ME. I WORK FOR PENNDOT MAINTENANCE, SO I'M ON TOP OF MAINTAINING, OIL, FILTERS, CHECK UPS. TIRES WERE A BIT LOW, BUT NEXT ON MY LIST. I NEED HELP. *TR

THE CAR ENGINE SHUT OFF NUMEROUS TIMES. THE PANEL DID NOT SHOW ANY CODES - NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS LIGHTING. EVENTUALLY THE PROBLEM GOT WORSE, AND THE CAR STOPPED MORE FREQUENTLY IN CITY/STREET DRIVING AND ON THE CHICAGO EDENS HIGHWAY DURING RUSH HOUR, WITH NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARING.THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. UPON TAKING THE VEHICLE TO MULTIPLE AUTO MECHANICS FOR THE PURPOSE OF RECEIVING MULTIPLE OPINIONS, THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP MECHANICS TOLD US WE NEEDED TO CHANGE THE ENGINE - WITH NO SOLID REASONING OR INCREMENTAL EVIDENCE THAT THE PROBLEM WAS A) TRULY, AN ENGINE MECHANICS OR OTHER RELATED OPERATING ISSUE OR 2) SERIOUS ENOUGH PROBLEM TO REQUIRE AN ENTIRE ENGINE OVERHAUL. WHEN CONTACTING HYUNDAI AMERICA, THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO ACCEPT THE FACTS OF WHICH ARE A VERY SERIOUS, IMMANENT MANUFACTURER CONCERN, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, CONSUMER CONFIDENCE AND SAFETY CONCERN. THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE. WE HAVE ENTIRE REASON TO BELIEVE BASED ON OUR FACTUAL INFORMATION THAT HYUNDAI IS PRESENTING DISHONEST AND POTENTIALLY HARMFUL INFORMATION TO THEIR CUSTOMERS, FROM THE VEHICLE'S LACK OF SAFETY NOTIFICATION AND IMPROPER RESPONSE IN HANDLING THE SITUATION WITH THE CONSUMER. I TALKED WITH THE HYUNDAI CASE MANAGER. THEIR SYSTEM HAS MY INFO AND MY CAR INFO, AND OUR CONVERSATION. I HAD INFORMED CASE MANAGER, THAT I'M GOING TO FILE A COMPLAINT TO NHTSA AGAINST HYUNDAI POOR PERFORMANCE AND ISSUE RESOLUTION. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND YOUR INVESTIGATION. *LN *JS

BOUGHT MY ELANTRA GT HATCHBACK 4 YEARS AGO WITH 34K MILES USED, GOOD CONDITION! I HAD A 2007 HYUNDAI ELANTRA PRIOR AND LOVED IT SO WHY NOT I THOUGHT. I HAVE KEPT UP WITH MY OIL CHANGES, TIRE ROTATIONS, NEW TIRES ETC RECENTLY THIS YEAR MY CAR STARTED MAKING A CLICKING NOISE, WE FIGURED IT MIGHT BE THE OIL SO I REPLACED IT, BUT WANTED STILL THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TO CHECK IT OUT. ON MY WAY TO THE DEALERSHIP THE CAR'S ENGINE LIGHT KEPT FLASHING, THEN WHEN I PULLED OVER THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN THE BATTERY LIGHT, THIS HAD NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE, SO I HAD TO GET MY CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY CALLED AND SAID I WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE BASICALLY, SOMETHING RELATED TO THE CYLINDERS ETC. I AM TRYING ALL AVENUES TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET THE CAR FIXED AND OUT OF MY HANDS, UNFORTUNATELY I AM NOT BUYING HYUNDAI AGAIN, ESPECIALLY SINCE READING THAT OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND HYUNDAI STILL REFUSES TO ADD THIS MODEL TO THEIR SONATA AND SANTA FE RECALL, RIDICULOUS. SORRY HYUNDAI YOU HAVE LOST MY BUSINESS SINCE YOU REFUSE TO TAKE UP RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR MISTAKES.

MY CAR IS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND I NOTICED THE SHIFT STARTED TO GET STUCK HERE AND THERE. WITHIN A COUPLE DAYS AND VERY LITTLE DRIVING, I GOT STUCK AND HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED BECAUSE IT WOULDN'T SHIFT AT ALL. IT ONLY HAS 31,000 MILES SO I DIDN'T THINK IT COULD BE THE CLUTCH. AFTER 2.5 WEEKS AT THE DEALER, THEY SAID IT'S NOT A RECALL BUT IS A HYUNDAI "ALERT", COVERED BY WARRANTY AND THAT THERE'S A DEFECT THAT ALLOWS DEBRIS IN WHICH JAMS THE SHIFT. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REMOVED, THE SHIFTER CLEANED UP AND A PATCH KIT PUT IN TO KEEP IT FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. WITHIN A COUPLE DAYS AND LESS THAN 20 MILES, I LOST ALL ABILITY TO SHIFT AND THE CAR WHEN BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT. IT STARTED AGGRESSIVELY JUMPING FORWARD AND BACK WITH NO CONTROL. I WAS STOPPED BY A CURB. THIS WAS IN A PARKING LOT AND I COULD HAVE HIT A PERSON! IT WOULD NO LONGER START GOT TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER AND I'M AWAITING AN ANSWER.

AFTER REACHING APPROX. 60,000 MILES MY ENGINE DEVELOPED A SLIGHT TICKING NOISE. I'VE MAINTAINED REGULAR OIL CHANGES, ROTATIONS AND OTHER GENERAL MAINTENANCE ALONG WITH ENSURE MY CAR SELDOM IF EVER HITS EMPTY. IN THE PAST FEW YEARS OF OWNING THE CAR, I'VE HAD TROUBLE WITH THE START UP. I CONTRIBUTED THIS TO THE COLD WEATHER OF CHICAGO. AS THE TEMPERATURES HAVE BEEN RATHER FAIR LATELY, I'VE BEEN HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WHERE IT WONT START INITIALLY. TODAY, MY ENGINE DIED TWICE WHILE IN TRAFFIC WITH NO WARNING, NO SOUNDS OR ANYTHING. I WAS ABLE TO START IT UP JUST FINE TODAY AND AFTER EACH STALL BUT AM MORE CONCERNED OF A LARGER ISSUE. TO MY KNOWLEDGE THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH A NUMBER OF HYUNDAI VEHICLES IN THE 2014 CLASS ALONG WITH A NUMBER OF ELANTRAS.MY ISSUE OCCURED WHILE DRIVING ON THE CITY STREETS.

I WAS ON A SIDE STREET AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART IT, BUT EVERY TIME I CAME TO A STOP OR SLOWED DOWN IT WOULD STALL. I WAS LUCKY I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY EVERY TIME IT STALLED (IT STALLED SEVERAL TIMES IN THE 2 DAYS BEFORE I COULD GET IT TO THE MECHANIC) I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A MECHANIC AND THEY TOLD ME I NEED A NEW ENGINE. MY CAR HAS 57714 MILES ON IT AND IS REGULARLY MAINTAINED. I CALLED A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME SINCE I WAS THE SECOND OWNER THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE WARRANTY I PURCHASED WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR WILL COVER HALF THE COST OF A NEW ENGINE.

AROUND 9/14/19, MY ENGINE STARTING RATTLING (HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=8NKOF1BPU2E&FEATURE=YOUTU.BE). I HAD A MECHANIC LOOK AT IT, AND THEY OBSERVED NOTHING WRONG. SO, I WANTED A SECOND OPINION FROM HYUNDAI DIRECTLY AND GOT AN APPOINTMENT FOR 9/25/19. THE ENGINE DIED ON 9/23/19 WHEN I WAS COMING UP TO A STOP SIGN. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE ENGINE TOED TO HYUNDAI AND THEY SAID THE ENGINE FAILED AND WOULD BE $7500 TO REPLACE. I HAVE ALWAYS TAKEN EXCELLENT CARE OF MY CAR AND REGULARLY GOT THE OIL CHANGED. THE ORIGINAL MECHANIC CLAIMED NO RESPONSIBILITY WHEN I TRIED TO FILE A CLAIM THROUGH THEM. HYUNDAI ALSO CLAIMED NO RESPONSIBILITY WHEN I FILED A CLAIM THROUGH THEM AS WELL.

WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 8E JUST BEFORE PINE VALLEY, IN LANE ONE, MY VEHICLE SUDDENLY BEGAN MAKING A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE. A MOMENT LATER, THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON, THEN THE ENGINE LIGHT AND THEN THE CAR STALLED AND COULD NOT BE RESTARTED. LUCKILY, AS SOON AS THE LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE CAR STALLED WE WERE ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE RIGHT HAND SHOULDER. ONCE THERE WE TRIED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE BUT WAS UNABLE TO DO SO. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO FRANK HYUNDAI. YESTERDAY WE WERE INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE IS SEIZED AND REQUIRES A NEW ENGINE. I AM THE SECOND OWNER AND HAVE ONLY HAD THE VEHICLE FOR 2 YRS AND IT ONLY HAS 87,000 MILES ON IT. IT HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON THE ENGINE SHOULD HAVE SEIZED SUDDENLY AS IT DID. ALL VEHICLE FLUIDS WERE CHECKED AND OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS WERE PERFORMED AND WERE GOOD PRIOR TO OUR TRIP. WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE NOT BEEN HIT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE WHEN THIS OCCURRED. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS OCCURRING IN OTHER ELANTRAS OF MY SAME YEAR IN ADDITION TO THE OTHER HYUNDAI VEHICLES THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN RECALLED. IT MY URGENT REQUEST THAT THIS BE INVESTIGATED BEFORE SOMEONE DOES GET INJURED OR KILLED. I ALSO REQUEST THAT HYUNDAI INCLUED THE ELANTRAS WITH SAME THE AFFECTED YEARS OF THE SONATA AND SANTA FE'S, SUCH AS MY 2014 BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.

AFTER DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A SIGNIFICANT KNOCKING SOUND. I PULLED OVER AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER. THEY PERFORMED AN ENGINE DIAGNOSIS AND REMOVED THE OIL PAN TO FIND A LOT OF METAL FLAKES. I WAS ADVISED NOT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE (ENGINE WOULD LIKELY SEIZE) AND INFORMED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 85,000 MILES ON IT, AND THE REPAIR QUOTES ARE $6,500-8,500, WHICH IS ALMOST WHAT THE VEHICLE WAS WORTH BEFORE THE ENGINE FAILURE. NEITHER THE MANUFACTURER OR THE DEALER WOULD PROVIDE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TOWARDS REPAIR DUE TO ME BEING THE SECOND OWNER. SINCE TAKING OWNERSHIP AT APPROXIMATELY 70,000 MILES I HAVE HAD EVERY RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE PERFORMED BY THE DEALER. NO INDICATION WAS EVER GIVEN TO ME ABOUT THERE BEING METAL IN THE OIL PAN OR ANY POTENTIAL PROBLEM ARISING. I HAVE SINCE FOUND OUT THAT THESE ENGINES HAVE A HIGH FAILURE RATE, AND THE MANUFACTURER FIGHTS TOOTH-AND-NAIL TO AVOID ACKNOWLEDGING A PROBLEM OR ASSISTING WITH REPAIR COSTS FOR SECOND OWNERS -- EVEN IF WELL UNDER THE 100,000-MILE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY PROVIDED TO ORIGINAL OWNERS.

I PURCHASED A 2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA GT BRAND NEW. ADMITTEDLY I PUT A LOT OF MILES ON MY VEHICLE AND IT HAD 121000 MILES. HOWEVER, I ALWAYS KEPT UP ON MY MAINTENANCE AND ALWAYS USED SYNTHETIC OIL SINCE THE FIRST OIL CHANGE. AFTER GETTING AN OIL CHANGE I WAS ABOUT 3 MILES FROM THE FACILITY AND MY CAR SUDDENLY LOST RPM AND THE SPEED DECREASED. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED MY VEHICLE OFF. NO LIGHTS CAME ON, NOT ENGINE OR OIL. I TURNED THE VEHICLE BACK ON AND SUDDENLY THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A RATTLING NOISE. I CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO MY LOCAL GARAGE. THAT MECHANIC SAID HE THOUGHT IT WAS THE TIMING CHAIN. I THEN HAD THE CAR TOWED TO DICKSON CITY HYUNDAI. THERE, THEY SAID I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. I BEGAN SPEAKING WITH A REPRESENTATIVE FROM HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CARE. I ENDED UP HAVING TO PAY HALF OF THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT AND LABOR COSTS. MY PORTION WAS $3250. THIS IS COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS THAT A VEHICLE ALWAYS MAINTAINED WOULD HAVE THE ENGINE GONE A MONTH BEFORE THE FIVE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF PURCHASING IT. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HYUNDAI IN MY LIFE.

2014 ELANTRA DRIVING THE CAR IN TOWN AT SLOW SPEEDS, USUALLY AROUND 15-25 MILES AN HOUR, WITH RPMS AT ABOUT 1250. FIRST NOTICED AN ISSUE WITH EXTREMELY JERKY DRIVING, BUT ADDED GAS AND THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY, AND I THOUGHT IT WAS A ONE-TIME THING. ABOUT A WEEK LATER, IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I SET AN APPOINTMENT TO THE MURDOCK HYUNDAI OF MURRAY UTAH TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE THAT WAS PUTTING MY FAMILY AND MY SECURITY IN RISK. ON JUNE 18TH AROUND 6 PM, THE DID A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK IN THE DEALERSHIP AND THEN, THEY RECOMMENDED ME TO CLEAN MY GAS INJECTORS, TO DO A TUNE-UP, TO DO AN ALIGNMENT AND TO ADD NEW FOUR TIRES CHANGE SINCE THEY WERE TOTALLY DAMAGED., SOME KIND OF HYUNDAI SOLVENT CLEANERS FOR THE GAS ENGINE. ALL OF THE SERVICES HAD A TOTAL OF $1043 DOLLARS. I THOUGHT IT WAS ALL IT NEEDED BUT NOT IT WAS NOT. A FEW DAYS LATER, THE CAR STARTED TO HAVE THE SAME SYMPTOMS AS BEFORE, LOSING POWER AGAIN, ENGINE SLOWING DOWN AND BAD GAS MILEAGE... I SET UP ANOTHER APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALERSHIP.

WHILE DRIVING MY 2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA IT STARTED TO SLOW DOWN, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ONE ALONG WITH THE A FLASHING OIL LIGHT. I FOUND IT FUNNY BECAUSE I HAD JUST HAD THE OIL CHANGED 1 WEEK BEFORE. THE NEXT THING I KNEW THE CAR JUST STOPPED MID DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON THE FREEWAY.. I HAD IT TOWED BACK TO THE MECHANIC AND THEY CHECKED EVERYTHING OUT AND I WAS TOLD I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. I DON'T SEE HOW WHEN I KEEP MY MATIENCE UP ON MY CAR. BUT AS I LOOK UP THINGS ON THE INTERNET I SEE THE 2014 ELANTRA IS GIVING ALOT OF PEOPLE PROBLEMS WHEN IT COMES TO THE ENGINE. AND I AM NOT SURE WHY HYUNDAI HAS NOT DONE A RECALL ON THE ENGINES HERE IN THE US BUT HAVE DONE SO IN CANDA AND OVERSEAS. I AM A MEDICAL RETIRED SERVICE MEMBER AND ON A FIXED INCOME. SO PAYING 1000S OF DOLLARS FOR A NEW ENGINE IS NOT IN MY BUDGET. NOR BUYING A NEW CAR ... HYUNDAI HAS BEEN GREAT WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE THUS FAR BUT NOW I AM FRUSTRATED AND SICK TO MY STOMACH WITH THE WAY I HAVE BEEN TREATED. THANK YOU FOR NOTHING...

THE MOTOR STARTED MAKING A CLICKING NOISE VERY FAINT AT FIRST THEN OVER TIME IT GOT LOUDER THEN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP WE PURCHASED THE CAR. WE WERE TOLD THAT IT NEEDED A TEAR DOWN TO DETERMINE IF THE CAR NEEDED A NEW ENGINE THEY DID THAT, THEN WE WERE TOLD SINCE WE WERE LOYAL CUSTOMERS HAD PURCHASED 3 CARS FROM MASSEY AND IT HAD 104,000 MILES 4 THOUSAND OVER WARRANTY THAT HYUNDAI WOULD PROBABLY COVER PART OR ALL OF THE COST! WE WERE TOLD THAT IF HYUNDAI DIDN'T COVER THE COST THAT IT WOULD COST US A COUPLE OF THOUSAND DOLLARS!...SO WE TOLD THEM TO FIX THE CAR HYUNDAI WAS GOING TO COVER SOME OF THE COST DIDN'T KNOW HOW MUCH THOUGH! WE WERE NEVER TOLD...AND WE'VE NEVER BEEN TOLD HOW MUCH HYUNDAI COVERED. THE CAR NEEDED A FEW MINOR REPAIRS LIKE THE SERPENTINE BELT WHICH WE NEEDED TO PAY FOR BUT WE ENDED UP PAYING $2300.00 DOLLARS WE HAVE TALKED TO OTHER HYUNDAI OWNERS THAT HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THEIR ENGINES JUST WANTED TO KNOW IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS FOR THE ENGINE?

I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF A 2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA THAT NOW HAS 72,000 MILES ON IT. AFTER EXPERIENCING RECENT ISSUES WITHIN THE ENGINE OF THIS VEHICLE, I TOOK IT TO DAVE HALLMAN HYUNDAI IN ERIE, PA WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED AN ENGINE REPLACEMENT. IT WAS ALSO DECIDED THAT I WOULD PAY THE COSTS OF THE LABOR, WHICH TOTALS $2,345. DURING THIS EXPERIENCE I HAVE FOUND THAT HYUNDAI SONATAS, SANTE FES, AND ELANTRAS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. AS A MATTER OF FACT, WHEN I INITIALLY TOOK MY VEHICLE TO A LOCAL MECHANIC, EMPLOYEES WERE ALSO WORKING ON A SANTA FE THAT HAD EXPERIENCED ENGINE FAILURE, LEADING ME TO QUESTION THE QUALITY OF THESE VEHICLES WHEN THE ISSUE IS SO PROMINENT. IN THE PAST 4 YEARS I HAVE BOUGHT TWO VEHICLES FROM HYUNDAI, BUT FOR REASONS BEYOND MY CONTROL, HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE FIRST AND NOW POTENTIALLY THE SECOND. MOREOVER, I HAVE BEEN WITHOUT A VEHICLE FOR FOUR WEEKS NOW. I WAS INFORMED A CASE MANAGER COULD ASSIST ME, BUT OF THE MULTIPLE HYUNDAI REPRESENTATIVES, NONE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE EVEN A PHONE NUMBER. EIGHT DAYS AFTER REPRESENTATIVES TOLD ME THE CASE HAD BEEN SUBMITTED, THE CASE MANAGER CONTACTED ME ONLY TO TELL ME HE COULD OFFER NO ASSISTANCE. I WAS NOT INFORMED MY CASE WOULD BE DEEMED VOID IN TWO DAYS, BUT JUST HAPPENED TO CALL AND CHECK. I UNDERSTAND HYUNDAI MAINTAINS POLICIES AROUND THE SERVICE THAT CAN AND CANNOT BE PROVIDED TO SECOND OWNERS. I ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT AS A SECOND OWNER, MY VEHICLE'S WARRANTY WOULD HAVE EXPIRED 12,000 MILES AGO. HOWEVER, I AM ASKING THAT HYUNDAI CORRECT ITS MISTAKE AND PAY FULL PRICE FOR SELLING A DEFECTED PRODUCT THAT INHIBITED THE SAFETY, RELIABILITY, AND QUALITY OF MY VEHICLE. THERE IS NO REASON MY CAR SHOULD HAVE COMPLETELY FAILED THIS EARLY ON. I DO NOT FEEL HYUNDAI'S CUSTOMERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING TO CORRECT SUCH A PROMINENT MISTAKE.

THIS IS NOW THE THIRD TIME THAT MY CAR HAS COMPLETELY CUT OFF ON ME WHILE DRIVING AND IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY TIME THIS HAPPENS THERE IS ALWAYS A BURNING SMELL COMING THROUGH THE VENTS. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS CAR AT ALL. HYUNDAI DOES NOT SEEM TO CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS AT ALL.

AFTER TAKING IT INTO A DEALER, THEY INFORMED ME THE ENGINE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THERE IS ONLY 112,000 MILES ON A 2014 CAR. IT HAS HAD REGULAR OIL CHANGES AND KEPT IN GOOD CONDITION. TAKATA RECALL ON 9/23/2018, ABOUT AN HOUR AFTER A RAINSTORM (CAR WAS GARAGED DURING STORM) MY CAR WAS IN MOTION AT 40 MPH IN THE LEFT LANE ON A CURVE OF A SOUTHBOUND INTERSTATE EXIT I275. THE CAR SUDDENLY WENT SIDEWAYS, AND BEGAN FISHTAILING. I TRIED TO PUMP THE BREAKS BUT THEY WERE NOT WORKING. THE VEHICLE THEN SMASHED THE FRONT SIDE OF BUMPER INTO THE GUARD RAIL, AND PUSHED ME ACROSS TWO TRAFFIC LANES. THE VEHICLE STOPPED IN THE RIGHT LANE, FACING NORTH IN A SOUTHBOUND EXIT. I TRIED TO PUT IT IN REVERSE TO GET INTO THE SHOULDER, AND THERE WAS NO ACCELERATION. THE ENGINE HAD SHUT OFF ON ME WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT FAILED THE ENGINE, OR WHY IT SHUT OFF. HYUNDAI CORPORATE WAS CONTACTED AND THEY OPENED A CASE, AND PERFORMED A FULL INSPECTION. ON 11/12/18 HYUNDAI CLAIMED "WE CANNOT AGREE THAT THE ACCIDENT INVOLVED A PRODUCT DEFECT AND ARE DECLINING ANY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE." A THIRD PARTY MECHANIC WAS THEN CONTACTED, AND FOUND CODE C1555 AND A FAILING VVTI CYLINOID. THERE IS NO RECALL. THERE IS NO WAY TO PROVE THIS CAR IS UNSAFE WITH THE ROUTES I HAVE TAKEN SO FAR. I WILL NOT ACCEPT THIS ANSWER. THE ENGINE OF THIS CAR SHUT OFF AND COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL. IT IS ALSO TERRIFYING TO THINK ABOUT WHO WOULD TO BE BLAMED FOR SUCH A FATAL OR DANGEROUS ACCIDENT SINCE HYUNDAI "COULDN'T FIND ANY DEFECT." I ASKED FOR RESULTS OF THE SCAN AND THE CASE MANAGER, CHRISTINA REPLIED THAT I AM NOT AUTHORIZED TO SEE THEM, FOR "RESULTS ARE FOR PROPRIETARY USE ONLY." THIS COMPANY NEEDS TO OWN UP TO THEIR RISKY PRODUCT!

ON DECEMBER 8, 2017 I PURCHASED A 2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA COUPE. ON AUGUST 3, 2018 WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE CAR STARTED MAKING RATTLING NOISES. I PULLED OVER AND THE CAR SHUT DOWN. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED. I CONTACTED THE HYUNDAI CORPORATION. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE THE CAR TO MY LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. THE HYUNDAI CONTACT STATED THAT IT WAS NOT NORMAL THAT A THREE YEAR OLD HYUNDAI AUTOMOBILE ENGINE SHOULD DIE. THE HYUNDAI CONTACT STATED THAT MY LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP SHOULD PERFORM A PA. PA IS A PRIOR APPROVAL. THE PA WAS PERFORMED AND ALONG WITH THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIPS DIRECTOR OF SERVICE KEVIN ANDERSON SUPPORT, AND AGREEMENT OF ABNORMALITY, THE PA WAS SUBMITTED. THE PA CAME BACK AS DENIED STATING 'EXCESSIVE MILEAGE'. THE DIRECTOR OF SERVICE DISAGREED AND RESUBMITTED THE PA. THE CASE WAS ELEVATED TO A HYUNDAI CORPORATE CASE MANAGER BY THE NAME CAMERON. CAMERON REJECTED THE PA AS WELL BUT CHANGED THE REASONING TO 'MILEAGE OVER WARRANTY'. THE WHOLE REASON FOR THE PA IN THE FIRST PLACE WAS BECAUSE THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I AT THIS POINT ON AUGUST 31, 2018 OVERNIGHTED A LETTER TO THE CEO OF HYUNDAI MR. KYUNG SOO LEE. TO DATE I HAVE RECEIVED NO RESPONSE FROM THE HYUNDAI CORPORATION. IN SPEAKING WITH THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DIRECTOR I WAS INFORMED THAT AT HIS DEALERSHIP ALONE THERE ARE 5/6 HYUNDAI ELANTRAS THAT HAVE LOST THEIR ENGINES. HE ALSO INFORMED ME THAT THE HYUNDAI SONATA HAS AN OPEN RECALL ON THE ENGINE. HE STATED THAT THE ENGINES FOR BOTH THE SONATA AND ELANTRA VEHICLES ARE CURRENTLY BACK ORDERED FOR A TERM OF AT LEAST 1 TO 2 YEARS. IN MY PERSONAL ONLINE RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND COMPLAINTS OF THE EXACT CIRCUMSTANCES HAPPENING TO THE ELANTRA ENGINES: HIGHWAY DRIVING, NO WARNING INDICATORS, RATTLING NOISES, VEHICLE STOPPING, AND ENGINE DEAD. I AM ENCLOSING THE CEO LETTER ALONG WITH THE PA DOCUMENTATION.

2014 ELANTRA GT MANUAL 6 SPEED, PURCHASED 8/6/18 WITH 31,636 MILES FROM A NON HYUNDAI DEALER IN MASSACHUSETTS. I LIVE IN UPSTATE NY. THE CAR CAME WITH A 90 DAY OR 3,750 MILE DEALER WARRANTY, AND IS STILL UNDER THE FACTORY WARRANTY UP TO 60,000 MILES. I'M THE 2ND OWNER. AT APPROX 34,500 MILES, ON 10/5/18, WHILE ACCELERATING UPHILL, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO MAKE A SHARP AND LOUD RAPPING AND SQUEALING NOISE AND LOST POWER. I WAS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON A COUNTRY ROAD WITH NO WHERE TO STOP, BUT I MANAGED TO PULL OVER AFTER COASTING DOWNHILL FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE MILE. I CHECKED THE ENGINE OIL IMMEDIATELY AND THERE WAS NO OIL SHOWING ON THE DIPSTICK. I CALLED MY WIFE TO COME AND PICK ME UP AND ASKED HER TO BRING 3 QUARTS OF SAE 5-20 OIL AS INDICATED ON THE FILL CAP. IT TOOK 2 QUARTS OF ADDED OIL FOR ANY OIL TO SHOW ON THE DIPSTICK, INDICATING THAT THERE HAD BEEN SIGNIFICANT AND EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION IN THE 2 MONTHS FROM MY DATE OF PURCHASE, AT WHICH TIME THE DIPSTICK INDICATED THAT THE OIL WAS AT THE FULL LEVEL. THE CAR HAD AN OIL CHANGE PRIOR TO MY PURCHASE PER THE SALESMAN AT THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ON PRIOR TO THE ENGINE FAILURE, AND NON CAME ON AFTERWARD. THE CAR IS AT A LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER BEING DIAGNOSED. THE HYUNDAI DEALER PROVIDED ME WITH A LOANER CAR "FOR THE DURATION", THAT THEY TOLD ME WAS INCLUDED AS PART OF THE FACTORY WARRANTY AND WOULD BE FREE OF CHARGE. I SUSPECT A CRANKSHAFT BEARING, CON ROD BEARING AND/OR WRIST PIN FAILURE, AND SEIZED PISTON(S) DUE TO OIL STARVATION.

AS I WAS DRIVING MY OIL LIGHT CAME ON, IT WAS FLICKERING ON AND OFF THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN MY CAR JUST STOPPED AND THE CHECK ENGINE, BATTERY, AND OIL LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP THE TOLD ME IT WAS THE BATTERY, SO I REPLACED IT. 2 MONTHS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED AND I WAS TOLD IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP, SO I REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP, AND HAD THE OIL CHANGED. NOW IT'S BEEN 3 MONTHS AND I AM HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. I LOVE MY ELANTRA BUT THIS ISSUE IS CAUSING ME MORE MONEY AND TIME. NO CODES COME UP WHEN THEY HOOK IT UP FOR DIAGNOSTICS SO THIS HAS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH A FAULTY PART IN THE CAR.

I STARTED MY CAR WITH NO PROBLEM AND DROVE MAYBE 15 MIN FROM MY HOME. I WENT INTO THE STORE AND CAME BACK OUT AND THE CAR STRUGGLED TO START. AFTER THE SECOND ATTEMPT THE CAR STARTED ALTHOUGH IT DIDN'T SOUND RIGHT. AFTER DRIVING A MINUTE UP THE ROAD THE CAR SHUT COMPLETELY OFF AND WOULDN'T START. AFTER SEVERAL FAILED ATTEMPTS OF TRYING TO START MY CAR I HAD IT TOWED TO MY HOME. I HAD A MECHANIC COME TO CHECK IT OUT AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WERE METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL, WHICH IS A SIGN THAT THE ENGINE WAS FAILING. I THEN EXPLAINED TO HIM THAT THE CAR HAS BEEN KNOCKING FOR A FEW MONTHS AND HE INFORMED ME THAT HYUNDAI RECALLED A FEW MODELS FOR THE SAME REASON. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON MINE AND REALIZED THERE ARE SEVERAL PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND HYUNDAI HAS DONE NOTHING ABOUT IT.

DEC OF 2017 THE CAR STALLED WHILE I WAS DRIVING THROUGH A TUNNEL. LUCKILY WE WEREN'T MOVING REALLY DUE TO TRAFFIC. THE CAR STARTED RIGHT UP AND WAS FINE. JAN 2018 MY ENGINE STARTED TO MAKE A LOUD THUMPING SOUND, ESPECIALLY UPON COLD START UP. BROUGHT VECHILE IN FEB 2018 BC THE SOULS WAS STARTING TO HAPPEN ALL THE TIME. FIRST TRIP INTO HYUNDAI THEY TOLD ME THERE WERE NO CODES COMING UP AND IT T WAS BC OF MY OIL FILTER NOT BEING BE CORRECT SIZE. HOWEVER, I HAVE HAD MY OIL CHANGES DONE EVERY 3-5 THOUSAND MILES AND NEVER ONCE HAD ANY ISSUE, EVER. MIND YOU MY CAR JUST TURNED THREE. THEY CHANGED THE OIL FILTER EVEN THOUGH I LITERALLY HAD AN OIL CHANGE ABOUT TWO WEEKS EARLIER AND THE ISSUES STARTS IN DECEMBER. NOTHING CHANGED AND NOTHING WAS FIXED, THE SOUND WAS STILL THERE. BROUGHT IT BACK ABOUT A WEEK AND A HALF LATER OVERNIGHT SO THEY COULD DO THE COLD STARTUP. HYUNDAI CALLED ME THAT MORNING AND SAID MY ENGINE WAS FAILING AND THAT I NEEDED A NEW ONE REPLACED. I WAITED THREE MONTHS FOR THE REPLACEMENT ENGINE BC IT WAS ON BACK ORDER NATIONWIDE. I RELIEVED THE CAR BACK MID MAY ON A SATURDAY. THAT FOLLOWING MONDAY THE CAR WAS DEAD. COULD NOT START IT. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO HYUNDAI, AND THE BATTERY WAS DEAD. HYUNDAI REPLACED THE BATTERY. ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER I STARTED HAVING ISSUES WHILE IDLING AND IN GEAR. THE ENGINE WAS SKATING AND MY RPMS WERE GOING OVER 1 JUST SITTING. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN AND THEY AGAIN TOLD ME THERE WERE NO CODES AND THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO GET USED TO THE CAR AGAIN. ANOTHER TWO WEEKS GO BY AND NOW IT'S GETTING WORSE AND IT'S ESPECIALLY BAD IN REVERSER. I BROUGHT IT BACK IN AND THEY SAID THAT I NEEDED MY IGNITION COIL PACKS CHANGED BC MY ENGINE IS MISFIRING. THEY SENT ME HOME WITH MY CAR AND SAID IT WAS FINE TO DRIVE. A FEW DAYS LATER I LEAVE WORK AND IT WON'T START AGAIN. IT WAS TOWED TO HYUNDAI AND THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG.

WHILE DRIVING THE CAR DIES. ANY SPEED WHETHER ON FREEWAY OR CITY STREETS. DASH LIGHTS COME ON, ENGINE DIES, PUT CAR IN NEUTRAL AND IT STARTS BACK UP FOR ABOUT 10 TO 15 MIN THEN DOES IT AGAIN. THIS IS VERY UNSAFE AND IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. NO WARRANTY ON CAR CAUSE ITS AT 70,000 MILES, MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION AND DON'T HAVE MONEY TO DUMP INTO A 4 YR OLD CAR WITH 70,000 MILES. I SEE THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH A LOT OF THESE CARS, YET NO RECALL. THERE HAS TO BE AN ISSUE RELATED TO ALL AND IT SHOULD BE FIXED BY HYUNDAI SINCE IT IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE.

THERE IS A RECALL ON 2011-14 HYUNDAI SONATA'S AND SANTA FE'S, ELANTRA'S SHOULD ALSO BE INCLUDED WITH THIS RECALL. THE ENGINE FAILED ON OUR 2014 ELANTRA AS MY 16 YEAR OLD SON WAS TAKING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET AN OIL CHANGE. HYUNDAI IS REPLACING THE ENGINE, AND EXTENDING THE WARRANTY. HOWEVER I WANT TO INSURE THAT ELANTRAS ARE CONSIDERED AS PART OF THE RECALL.

IN JAN 2018 WHILE DRIVING MY CAR A NOTICE A KNOCKING NOISE. I BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND ASK ABOUT THE NOISE THEY HAD TOLD ME THAT IT MAYBE MY OIL PUMP. NEVER HAD ANY STALLING PROBLEMS AS OTHERS HAD REPORTED BUT DID HAVE A FEW TIMES THAT IT SEEMED LIKE IT DID NOT WANT TO SHIFT UNTIL I LET OFF THE GAS PEDAL. BROUGHT CAR TO DEALER SHIP(ROWE, AUBURN,ME) TO HAVE IT CHECKED AS IT WAS STILL UNDER THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY. LEFT IT THERE ON FEB 5, 2018. THEY CALLED ME LATER THAT MORNING AND TOLD ME THAT MY ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. INTERNAL PROBLEM. NOT SURE WHAT THAT MEANS. SO I ASKED IF THIS WAS GOING TO BE COVERED 100% AS IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY THEY SAID YES. SO THEY PUT ME IN A LOANER CAR. CHECKED BACK IN AT THE END OF THE MONTH AND WAS TOLD MY ENGINE WAS ON NATIONAL BACK ORDER UNTIL POSSIBLE MAY 2018. SO HERE IT IS MAY 14, 2018 AND STILL HAVE NOT HEARD WHEN I'LL GET MY CAR BACK.

HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE STALLING AT LOW SPEEDS OR COMPLETE STOP. THIS WOULD HAPPEN ON CITY STREETS. IT HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES OVER A PERIOD OF DAYS. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC FRIEND AND HE SAID IT WAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE POWER BRAKES PUTTING AIR INTO THE ENGINE SO I REPLACED THE BOOSTER. THE NEXT TIME I WENT DRIVING IT DID IT AGAIN IN ABOUT AN HOUR. TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC WHO SENT IT TO VANDERGRIFF HYUNDAI IN ARLINGTON, TEXAS. THEIR DIAGNOSES WAS THAT IT NEEDED A NEW TIMING CHAIN AND OTHER PARTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TIMING CHAIN. WITH ALL THE EXPENSES INVOLVED THE MECHANIC SAID HE COULD GET A USED ENGINE FOR JUST A LITTLE MORE THAN HE COULD FIX THE TIMING CHAIN FOR BUT STILL MUCH CHEAPER THAN THE DEALER WOULD TO REPLACE JUST THE TIMING CHAIN. I HAD THE NEW ENGINE INSTALLED BUT TRANSMISSION STOPPED WORKING AFTER ABOUT 8 HOURS OF DRIVING. THEN I HAD THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED. THIS MECHANIC WAS NOT A HIGHLY SKILLED MECHANIC. LONG STORY SHORT. ATTEMPTING TO GET THE STALLING PROBLEM FIXED. I HAD A NEW ENGINE INSTALLED, A NEW TRANSMISSION, AND ANOTHER ENGINE. THE MECHANIC LOST THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE SENSOR SO THE A/C WOULDN'T WORK. THE HUMIDITY BUILT UP IN THE CAR DURING A RAIN STORM. I COULDN'T SEE AND GOT STUCK IN HIGH WATER BLOWING OUT THAT ENGINE. NOW IT WAS COOL SO I DIDN'T NEED THE A/C. BUT WHEN THE WEATHER GOT WARMER I WENT TO ANOTHER MECHANIC AND HE REPLACED THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE SENSOR SO THE A/C WOULD WORK. BUT NOW THE CAR IS STALLING AGAIN. SAME PROBLEM. SO THE DIAGNOSIS BY VANDERGRIFF HYUNDAI WAS OBVIOUSLY INCORRECT AND IT LOOKS LIKE OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NAPLETON VALLEY HYUNDAI (4333 OGDEN AVE, AURORA, IL 60504, 877-382-8666) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FIRM BELT WAS FAULTY. THE TECHNICIAN REPLACED THE BELT. THE TECHNICIAN WAS INFORMED BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT THE CONTINUED STALLING WAS CAUSED BY BAD FUEL; HOWEVER, THE TECHNICIAN DID NOT AGREE AND NEEDED TO CHECK A FEW MORE THINGS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 58,000.

AT 75,000 MILES, THE ENGINE STARTED KNOCKING. I CONTACTED A HYUNDAI DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE ENGINE IS NO GOOD ANYMORE. THEY SAID IT HAS "INTERNAL ENGINE FAILURE". I CHANGED THE OIL ON SCHEDULE. A WELL KEPT ENGINE SHOULDN'T DIE WITH THAT FEW MILES ON IT.
Mileage: 75,700
I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE SOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE IS DELAYED KINDA, ALMOST LIKE ITS NOT GETTING ENOUGH AIR AT THE RIGHT TIME . MY CAR WILL HAVE A HARD TIME ACCELERATING AND IT WILL HIT HIGH RMPS THEN SHIFT. I HAVE TO JUST SLOW DOWN BEFORE THE SHIFT CAUSE SOMETIMES IT SCARES ME. I HEAR A TICKING SOUND SOMETIME BUT THAT COULD BE MUSIC. MY BREAKS ARE REALLY TOUCHY AND SOMETIME SEEM TO HAVE NO TRACTION WHEN I NEED IT MOST. ALL THESE THINGS HAPPEN WHEN I AM DRIVING. WHEN I AM TRYING TO ACCELERATE OR BREAK I CAN FILL SOME KIND OF PULL FROM BEHIND THE CAR.
Mileage: 50,000
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE TRAVELING AT ANY SPEED, THE ANTI-TRACTION INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND REMAINED LIT. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE AND MOVE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND SOMETIMES TOOK AWHILE TO RESTART. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE ENGINE BEGAN TO STALL AND PREVENTED THE CONTACT FROM MAINTAINING HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FENTON HYUNDAI (16230 LYNDON B JOHNSON FWY, MESQUITE, TEXAS), BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,000.

ENGINE STARTED WITH "DRY (NO OIL)" SOUND, WHICH DISSIPATED WITHIN A FEW SECONDS. CHECKED THE OIL LEVEL, WAS OK. TRAVELED APPROXIMATELY 12-14 MILES. AT HIGHWAY SPEED OF 70-75 MPH, ENGINE LOST POWER. LET OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND ENGINE DIED, I PUSHED IN THE CLUTCH PEDAL, COASTED, THEN LET OFF THE CLUTCH PEDAL AND ENGINE RESTARTED MAKING A VERY LOUD SOUND. MADE IT TO THE HIGHWAY EXIT, ABOUT 1.5 MILES. AS VEHICLE SLOWED, IT WAS APPARENT THAT THE ENGINE HAD SUFFERED A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE, SOUNDED LIKE BROKEN BOLTS ROLLING AROUND IN THE ENGINE. PARKED THE CAR. WHEN THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED, THERE WAS A LARGE CHUNK OF METAL, ASSUMED AND LATER CONFIRMED TO BE PART OF AN INTERNAL ENGINE COMPONENT, LAYING ON THE GROUND WHICH HAD CAME THROUGH THE ENGINE BLOCK AND MAKING A HOLE IN IT. REQUIRED AN ENGINE REPLACEMENT.

SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO EXCESSIVE METAL. CAR WAS OPERATING NORMALLY ON HIGHWAY WHEN SUDDENLY OIL PRESSURE LIGHT BEGAN FLASHING ON AND OFF. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY KNOCKING WHICH GOT PROGRESSIVELY LOUDER OVER SHORT PERIOD. ROLLED INTO SERVICE STATION TO FIND ENGINE BLOWN. SERVICE STATION SUGGESTED TOWING TO HYUNDAI FOR EVALUATION. HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TORE DOWN ENGINE TO FIND "SIGNIFICANT" METAL AND BLOWN CYLINDER. HYUNDAI REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS IS A DEFECT.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED AND A CLOUD OF WHITE SMOKE APPEARED FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS MOVED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, BLACK SMOKE BEGAN TO APPEAR FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH EVENTUALLY TURNED TO FLAMES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND FILED A REPORT. THE CONTACT WAS NOT NOTIFIED WHETHER OR NOT THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OPENED CASE NUMBER: 10309640. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 17V226000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE PART TO DO THE REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT WHEN SHE TRIED TO START THE VEHICLE, IT FAILED TO START AND THE STEERING WHEEL FAILED TO TURN. THE FAILURE RECURRED THREE MORE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD CALL THE CONTACT BACK, BUT DID NOT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,500. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.

THE TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR ON MY CAR DIED AFTER ABOUT 78000 MILES AND CAUSED THE CAR TO LOCK UP WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY. STAYED IN 3RD GEAR AND FOR A FEW WEEKS BEFORE WOULD LOCK UP WHILE IN PARK, NEUTRAL, REVERSE AND DRIVE (MOST COMMONLY WHILE IN PARK). THIS NEARLY CAUSED A COUPLE OF ACCIDENTS. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH ELANTRAS DATING ALL THE WAY BACK TO 2007 AND EVEN HAS CONTINUED PAST MY MODEL YEAR (2014) INTO 2015 MODELS. THE DEALERSHIP EVEN REFERRED TO IT ASO A FAULTY RANGE SENSOR WHICH TO ME SEEMS TO IMPLY THAT THEY KNOW ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I COULDN'T SHIFT AND HAD A MORE DIFFICULT TIME SLOWING DOWN AND SPEEDING UP THAN USUAL. THE PART IS RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE BUT THE DIAGNOSTIC FEE PLUS LABOR TO REMOVE AND REPLACE THE FAULTY MECHANICAL PART WAS WELL OVER $150, RESULTING IN A TOTAL BILL OF $210. A PART FAILURE THAT CAUSES THE VEHICLES COMPUTER, TRANSMISSION AND DRIVETRAIN TO LOSE ALL CONNECTION TO ONE ANOTHER CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS, ESPECIALLY WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY. AT FIRST IT HAPPENED ONLY WHILE STATIONARY IN PARK, THE CAR WOULD LOCK UP WHILE SITTING WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING FOR A WHILE. I WOULD TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND RE-ENGAGE THE VEHICLE AND EVERYTHING WOULD OPERATE AS NORMAL. THEN IT OCCURRED WHILE BACKING DOWN THE HILL OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, LOCKED UP IN REVERSE, I APPLIED THE BRAKES, SET THE PARKING BRAKE AND TURNED OFF THE CAR WHILE STILL IN REVERSE. (I LIVE IN A QUIET SUBDIVISION OF A SMALL TOWN OF 12,000, WHAT IF THIS HAPPENED IN A BUSIER OR MORE HEAVILY POPULATED AREA?) I WAS STILL ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE WHILE IN REVERSE AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER WHILE IN NEUTRAL. THEN TUESDAY MORNING WHILE ON THE INTERSTATE (I-95) THE GEAR AND DRIVE MODE INDICATOR ON THE TACHOMETER WENT BLANK, I WAS STUCK IN 3RD GEAR (LIMP MODE) AND MY CAR ONCE SLOWING DOWN HAD A DIFFICULT TIME ACCELERATING AFTER STOPPING.

WHEN DRIVING STRAIGHT AT 15-25 MPH, IN TOWN, AFTER ABOUT 25 MINUTES OF FREEWAY DRIVING, RPMS AT OR AROUND 1250, THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF AND ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH TURN ON. TAKING IT INTO THE SERVICE CENTER, THERE ARE NO CODES IN THE COMPUTER. THE TIMING CAP HAS BEEN REPLACED ONCE, BECAUSE THEY WERE ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ISSUE AT THE SHOP, BUT THE LAST TWO INSTANCES THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE SO THEY REFUSED TO FIX IT. THE CAR HAS 61000 MILES ON IT AND IS STILL UNDER HYUNDAI'S POWERTRAIN WARRANTY.

WANTS TO STALL WHEN PUSHING ON BRAKES, AND WHEN I LET OFF BRAKES IT WANTS TO STALL, MY GAS MILEAGE STAYS THE SAME ,AND MY TEMPERATURE GAUGE GOES UP FAST WHEN'S I START THE VECHICLE. MY LIGHTS IN MY CAR DON'T COME ON TO MUCH. AND IT'S SEEM TO BE RUNNING ROUGH IN CERTAIN AREAS THEN IT GOES BACK TO RUNNING GOOD WHEN I GET FURTHER AWAY FROM MY HOUSE I HAD MY CAR AT DEALERSHIPS 3 TIMES AND THEY SAY NO CODES. AND THE CAR DOES THIS WHEN I SIT STILL AND WHEN I PUSH ON THE GAS. IT DOES IT IN CITY HIGHWAY SEEMS TO BE RUNNING NORMAL. DEALERS DON'T KNOW WHAT'S WRONG
THE CAR WILL NOT TURN ON. THE BATTERY HAS BEEN TEST AND IS FINE. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE PAST YEAR. THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND STATIONARY, WHEN THE KEY IS IN THE IGNITION ALL LIGHTS TURN ON BUT THE CAR DOES NOT TURN ON. IT HAS BEEN TAKEN TO MULTIPLE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIPS AND THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION BECAUSE IT HAS LEFT ME STRANDED SEVERAL TIMES IN RURAL AREAS.

WHILE DRIVING ON 5 FREEWAY IN CALIFORNIA MY 2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA STARTED TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE LIKE SOMEONE HITTING THE BRAKE. I THREW IT IN NEUTRAL AND HELP MY WIFE TURN THE STEERING WHEEL BECAUSE WE LOST POWER STEERING. WE GOT LUCKY AND HAD A SPACE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WHEN WE GOT TOWED TO TUTTLE-CLICK IN IRVINE, CA AND OUR CAR TURNED INTO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THEY BASICALLY SAID WE ARE ON OUR OWN TO FIND A RIDE BACK HOME AND NO LOANER CAR. TWO DAYS LATER I HAVE TO CALL THEM TO FIND OUT THE PROBLEM, FIRST A TECHNICIAN SAID THAT IT WAS A BAD BATTERY BUT THAT WOULD NOT HAVE CAUSED IT TO COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN. THEN A FEW HOURS LATER THE SERVICE MANAGER CALLS TO SAY IT WAS THE BATTERY AND THAT IS WHAT CAUSED IT TO SHUT DOWN ON US. AFTER (4) DAYS OF KEEPING THE CAR, THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP SAID THAT OUR BATTERY HAD A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE WHICH CAUSED OUR CAR TO COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN ON THE FREEWAY. I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH HYUNDAI CORPORATE BUT DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY CAN DO?

ON RT. 29 NORTH IN MARYLAND, RUSH HOUR BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC, THIS VEHICLE, REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. THERE WAS OVER $8,900 OF DAMAGE AND THE DRIVER INJURED HIS LEFT KNEE BY HITTING THE DASH. THE CAR STALLED BEFORE THE CRASH AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE FAN WAS PUSHED INTO THE RADIATOR AND BOTH HEADLIGHTS WERE COMPLETLY, AND TOTALLY DEMOLISHED, WITH DAMAGE INCLUDING FROM THE FRONT BUMPER TO THE TWO FRONT DOORS, AND E EVERYTHING BETWEEN THE BUMPER AND THE ENGINE BLOCK. THIS IS THE SECOND FRONT END ACCIDENT FOR THIS CAR. THE FIRST BEING 3 WEEKS AFTER PURCHASE AND AGAIN THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY....UPDATED 06-12-15 *BF UPDATED 10/17/217*CN

MY DAUGHTER ATTENDS A UNIVERSITY IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA. I BOUGHT HER THIS CAR THINKING IT WOULD KEEP HER SAFE ON THE HECTIC FREEWAYS. THREE TIMES NOW THE CAR HAS STALLED ON THE FREEWAY. EACH TIME THE TRAFFIC WAS MOVING VERY SLOWLY WITH STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. I ADVISED HER TO TAKE IT TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP AND SHE DID. THEY CALLED HER AND ASKED TO KEEP THE CAR BECAUSE THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM SO THEY COULDN'T DIAGNOSE IT. SHE PICKED THE CAR UP THE NEXT DAY AND IT STILL WASN'T DIAGNOSED. I'VE SEEN FORUMS ON THE INTERNET WHERE THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO RECUR WITH HYUNDAIS AND IS TRACED TO THE 1) MAF SENSOR 2) FUEL SYSTEM; PUMP, INJECTORS, FILTER 3) CATALYTIC CONVERTER. IF A TECHNICIAN HAS TO "DUPLICATE" THE PROBLEM IN ORDER TO DIAGNOSE IT, IT MAY NEVER BE FIXED! NOW I TELL MY DAUGHTER TO STAY IN THE SLOW LANE JUST IN CASE. SO MUCH FOR "SAFETY". *TR

MY 2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA LIMITED HAS STALLED ON VARIOUS OCCASIONS, ALL HAVE WHICH HAVE BEEN WHILE I WAS AT A STOP. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE FOR NOW I HAVE STALLED ON THE FREEWAY WHILE MOVING IN TRAFFIC. MY CAR HAS CURRENTLY BEEN AT THE DEALER RUNNING A DIAGNOSTIC FOR TWO DAYS NOW AND THEY CANNOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. DOING MY OWN RESEARCH ONLINE I HAVE FOUND MULTIPLE OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME STALLING PROBLEM WITH THE EXACT SAME MAKE, MODEL, AND YEAR. ALL REPORTS HAVE ALL STATED THAT HYUNDAI CANNOT FIND THE PROBLEM. THIS CAN BECOME A SERIOUS ISSUE. *TR

WE PURCHASED A NEW 2104 ELANTRA IN SEPTEMBER 2013. TWO WEEKS LATER THE CAR WHEN STARTED MAKES A LOUD NOISE AND LAST FOR ABOUT AN HOUR OF DRIVING IT. IT HAS HAPPENED EVERY DAY SINCE EVEN AFTER GOING TO THE SHOP. A COUPLE MONTHS AGO WHILE DRIVING IN A SLOW SCHOOL ZONE THE CAR STALLED WHILE DRIVING. HAD TO PUT CAR IN PARK AND RESTART. TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES TO EXPRESS CONCERNS. TOLD NOTHING WRONG. ON 2/25/15 THE CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN AGAIN SLOWLY AND STALLED WHILE DRIVING, AGAIN HAD TO PUT IN PARK TO RESTART THE CAR. THE FIRST NOISE IS NOW LOUDER, THE CAR IS AGAIN AT THE DEALERSHIP TODAY 2/26/15. THIS CAR IS A MAJOR ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. CAN'T TAKE MY FAMILY IN THIS CAR AS A CAR THAT STALLS IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THSI CAR IS DRIVEN 40 MILES EACH WAY TO WORK EVERY DAY.
I HAS RECENTLY TRADED IN MY 2012 HYUNDAI ELANTRA FOR A 2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE 2014 HAD STARTED DOING WHAT THE 2012 DID OCCASIONALLY, ACCELERATE WHEN I RELEASED MY FOOT FROM THE GAS TO SWITCH TO THE BRAKE TO BEGIN SLOWING DOWN FOR A LIGHT. AFTER I'VE APPLIED THE BRAKE AND I'M COASTING BEFORE I NEED TO APPLY IT AGAIN, THE CAR WILL ACCELERATE. I USED TO THINK IT WAS MY IMAGINATION, THEN I READ OTHERS CONFIRMING IT DOES HAPPEN. LATELY I'VE ALSO HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE CAR ACCELERATING WHEN I DO TOUCH THE GAS, THE ENGINE REVS UP AND BOLTS FORWARD LIKE I FLOORED IT, BUT I ONLY LIGHTLY TOUCHED THE GAS. I'LL BE BRINGING IT TO THE DEALER SOON FOR THESE ISSUES. *TR

I WAS ON A HIGHWAY DRIVING THE VEHICLE (A 2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA) AT HIGHWAY SPEED WHEN IT INEXPLICABLY "STALLED" FOR LACK OF A BETTER TERM. I QUICKLY LOST SPEED AND COULD NOT ACCELERATE DESPITE THE FACT THAT I WAS PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AT ONE POINT. THE VEHICLE SIMPLY DID NOT RESPOND. THERE WAS PLENTY OF GAS IN THE VEHICLE, SO I HAD NOT RUN OUT OF GAS. THE VEHICLE APPEARED TO HAVE SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF OPERATION. THIS RESULTED IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT ON A HIGHWAY WHERE I, ALONG WITH THE OTHER OCCUPANTS WITHIN THE VEHICLE, SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT INJURIES. NOTABLY, NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED--EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS STRUCK SEVERAL TIMES FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES AND SUSTAINED HEAVY DAMAGE, INCLUDING BEING CRUSHED IN FROM THE REAR. *TR
