Hyundai Kona Years to Avoid
The 2019 model year is the most problematic Kona and should be avoided. Engine failures, including issues with the 2.0L and turbo 1.6L engines, generated numerous complaints. Two fatalities are associated with the Kona line. Transmission problems also appeared at concerning rates. The 2020 models, while improved, still carry some elevated risk. Early Kona EVs faced separate battery-related recalls.
Best Hyundai Kona Years
The 2026 model year benefits from multiple generations of refinement and is the best choice for buyers. 2024 and 2025 models are also solid options. The second-generation Kona introduced in 2024 addressed many earlier concerns. EV models from 2023 onward resolved previous battery issues. These newer models offer the most refined ownership experience.
