Component: Engine (Theta II 2.4L GDI) / connecting rod bearing-related failure risk with abnormal internal oil loss. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request (engine, oil level condition, diagnostic history, and dealer records). Safety risk: While driving on the highway (approx. 70 mph), the vehicle displayed a low oil warning, and I experienced concern for potential engine seizure/stalling and sudden loss of power, which could cause a crash. I reduced speed and sought service. This condition presents an ongoing safety risk because sudden engine failure can occur without adequate warning. Dealer confirmation: The problem was confirmed by a Hyundai dealer. After a routine oil change, the low oil warning appeared within ~1,700 miles. A Hyundai service center inspected the vehicle and documented the engine was approximately 3 quarts low with no external leaks, indicating internal loss/engine deterioration rather than a leak. Hyundai then required additional steps (combustion chamber cleaning and monitored mileage), and the abnormal internal oil loss condition persisted. Manufacturer inspection: The vehicle has been inspected by Hyundai dealerships, and Hyundai performed campaign-related actions, including KSDS/ECM update (T3G) and later knock sensor replacement. No police or insurance inspection. No crash or injury occurred. Warning lamps/symptoms prior to failure: Prior symptoms included a Check Engine Lamp with DTC P1326 (KSDS-related) documented by Hyundai service in 2025, followed by continued abnormal internal engine condition. The low oil warning occurred while the vehicle was in motion (highway speed). The issue remains unresolved, and I do not feel the vehicle is safe to operate due to seizure/stall risk. Additional: I reported this as a safety defect because similar Theta II engine issues are widely reported and can result in stalling, seizure, or engine fire. Hyundai denied engine replacement assistance despite the documented condition.

Vehicle: 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Mileage at Failure: ~129,000 miles Issue Type: Engine Failure / Valve / PCV-Related Defect Manufacturer & Dealer Both Denied Repair My 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe suffered a sudden engine failure at around 129,000 miles. The Hyundai dealer verbally told me the failure was caused by a faulty PCV valve, which is a known issue in Hyundai engines and can lead to severe oil loss, crankcase pressure problems, and ultimately engine failure. However, the printed diagnostic paperwork they provided listed a different reason for the failure, and the descriptions do not match what I was told verbally. This inconsistency makes me believe the cause is related to a known Hyundai engine defect that the manufacturer is not acknowledging. I contacted Hyundai Motor America directly, provided documentation, and requested warranty or goodwill repair assistance. They denied the claim even though the failure was due to a defective engine component and not misuse. This engine failure created a dangerous situation and appears to be consistent with Hyundai’s history of valve, oil system, and internal component defects. Given the mismatch between the verbal explanation and the written diagnosis, I am concerned the dealer and manufacturer are avoiding responsibility for a known defect. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate Hyundai for potential PCV-valve-related engine failures and inconsistent denial practices.

The engine of our 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has been significantly problematic since we first purchased the vehicle in 2017. These issues have been well documented by other Hyundai owners and have resulted in class action lawsuits. After purchasing our vehicle new from dealer, it began experiencing difficulties, consuming large amounts of oil, spewing smoke from the tailpipe, leaving metal shavings in the engine oil, failing to start, and at times going into a protection mode to keep the engine from further damage and restrict speed above 15 miles per hour. The vehicle had to be towed multiple times at our own expense. Hyundai delayed replacement of the engine for months resulting in thousands of additional miles being put on the vehicle under unsafe operating conditions. Hyundai reluctantly replaced the engine in February of 2024. What appears to not be well-documented in NHTSA complaints are the impacts of these engine issues to other Hyundai components and parts. Hyundai replaced our original engine but did not replace the engine’s catalytic converter. 20 months later, the check engine light has illuminated again as a direct result of oil sludge and buildup from accelerated oil consumption. In November 2025, the dealership identified the fault code P0420 for catalyst efficiency system below threshold. We have experienced a loss of acceleration, increased fumes, and decreased fuel efficiency as a result of the catalytic converter failure, and believe the vehicle is no longer safe to drive at high speeds on freeways. The dealership has confirmed damage to the catalytic converter and has quoted a replacement fee that is $5000, almost $1000 higher than other dealerships in our area. We asked for the dealership to submit a request to HMA for goodwill assistance and were denied on November 24th. We strongly believe that Hyundai is responsible for both the damage to the catalytic converter as well as the safety concerns caused by this issue.

The contact's mother owns a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. The contact stated that while the owner was driving the vehicle at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with loss of compression in the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that the engine failure was a known failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 114,000.

We had the oil changed like always and shortly after I was checking the oil and it was not even on the dipstick so I added some and checked for leaks anywhere did not see any than we had problems with it barely accelerating so took it to dealership the performed the anti knock sensor upgrade for free and when I asked about the oil consumption they said that I needed to do a engine clean and all kinds of stuff came to like $400 so I had them do it because I can not have my wife stranded somewhere after all that they changed the oil again that was another $80 they said to bring it back at 1000 miles for them to check brought it back at 700 miles already used 1.5 qts they said engine is junk but cannot get anything done about because it had at the time 120000 miles

The vehicle’s engine is experiencing excessive internal oil consumption that poses a serious safety risk while driving. After a routine oil change performed by an authorized Hyundai dealer, the engine oil warning light illuminated within about 1,700 miles. Upon inspection by another Hyundai service center, technicians confirmed that the engine was burning oil abnormally and was three quarts low, with no external leaks. This issue was documented in the dealer’s repair order, which states “vehicle is burning excessive oil.” The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by a Hyundai dealer. The vehicle is equipped with the Theta II 2.4L GDI engine, which is already covered under Hyundai’s KSDS (Knock Sensor Detection System) extended engine warranty due to known internal mechanical defects such as bearing wear and oil consumption. Despite this, the manufacturer has declined to replace the engine. The excessive oil burning occurs rapidly and triggers the low-oil warning light while the vehicle is in motion, creating a risk of engine seizure and sudden loss of power that could lead to a crash. The defect remains unresolved. Warning lights for low oil level appeared multiple times beginning in 2025, shortly after the KSDS update and knock-sensor replacement.

The light for the passenger airbag has been on for years. I have taken it in, and the only thing the service department determined is that there was a water bottle under the seat. I was rear-ended into another vehicle, and the airbag did not deploy. The engine burns the oil from an oil change in approximately two weeks. I add a quart of oil every two weeks. If the engine seizes while driving due to this condition, I could be injured in an accident.

Oct 22, 2025

Engine is experiencing excessive oil consumption. Engine in question is a Theta II 2.4 GDI. Losing a qt every 400-500 miles. The car has less than 75,000 miles on it. The vehicle has been religiously maintained, oil changes every 5,000 miles or less. However because we are the second owners, even though it was purchased in 2020 when it had less than 30,000 miles, the warranty does not apply. The engine type has several manufacturer defects. Hyundai is using the technicality of a non-transferable warranty to get out of the fact that they knowingly put a defective engine in vehicles. By the time the oil consumption issue is apparent, it is too late, and you need a full unit replacement. I was quoted $9,000 - $10,500 by two Hyundai dealerships to replace the engine. I've spoken to non-Hyundai shops and the only way to truly correct the issue is to replace the engine with a remanned engine since the actual engines are manufactured poorly from go, so even a new one could be defective. There are million of these engines across several KIA and Hyundai vehicles. They cause undue burden to consumers. Hyundai and Kia do not stand by their product and consumers are being hurt. Instead of having an asset I thought was worth $10,000 an I could drive for several years and tens of thousands, if not one hundred thousand plus, more miles, I have a vehicle that is a ticking time bomb that would cost as much to fully fix the problem as it is worth. A simple google for Kia Optima, Kia Sorento, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Sante Fe, Hyundai Sante Fe Sport, Hyundai Sonata or Hyundai Tucson + Theta II 2.4 GDI will yield more than enough results to show how prevalent the engine failure + oil consumption issue is. If left unfixed the engine will consume too much oil and seize, or lead to other problems with vehicle rendering unsafe to drive.

My car has a GDI motor and it is the most diabolical engine. I get an oil change REGULARY according to my cars need. Between oil changes, i have to constantly add oil. About every week i have to add about 2 quarts of oil. I have confirmed with my mechanic that i have NO leaks, no faulty gaskets or injectors. This car has caused me SO many problems. I should not have to constantly add oil to my car weekly just to get to my next oil change. There needs to be some sort of recall or extended warranty. My mechanic has stated that SEVERAL of his customers have had faulty GDI motors. My car has 118,000 miles on it and very well taken care of.

Oct 3, 2025

On [XXX, I was driving on the interstate when my engine seized and the car lost all power, leaving me stranded on the side of the road on a busy exit at night. This was very dangerous to myself and others. I purchased this car in July of 2023 with 69,000 miles in good condition. I immediately made an appointment to take care of the recalls and updates to this car, which were performed February 2024 due to this being the first available appointment. Also, at my first oil change (3,000 miles after the previous oil change) I was told by the mechanic that there was absolutely no oil in my car. Since then I have had to put SEVERAL quarts of oil in between each oil change, costing me hundreds of dollars. Then June of 2024, the P1326 code flashed on my car and it went into limp mode also while I was driving on a busy street, putting myself and others in danger. I took it to the dealership and was advised to continue driving it and there was nothing they can do until my engine fails. I also brought up the oil consumption issue and was told that even if I did an oil consumption test (at my cost), there was nothing they could do. I was advised by my service advisor not to do a consumption test. I took his advice and continued to drive my car, adding countless quarts of oil weekly to my car. Fast forward to September 2024, when my engine light came on due to misfires in cylinder 3&4 and I took it to a local mechanic due to the incredibly long wait for an appointment at Hyundai. I was told all 4 spark plugs were oil fouled due to excessive oil consumption. This happened again July of 2025. My mechanic advised me that there was nothing to do about it, but that this would continue to happen due to the oil consumption issue. Now Hyundai is refusing to take responsibility for this engine that has had documented issues resulting in class action lawsuits and safety issues for myself and others and refusing any financial assistance. No warning lamps were on before incident. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATIO

Engine shuttering and burning oil rapidly.

Sep 28, 2025

On [XXX], around [XXX] I was driving my car on [XXX] and I suddenly experienced "Check Engine Flashing" and engine misfiring. I was driving ~70-75 mph in the left lane. I immediately turned ON the Hazard lights and somehow manage to get to the right lane and safely stopped the car in open space on the side. This could have resulted in a very serious accident as I had my whole family in the car with me. Hyundai Motor Company must be held accountable for this type of engine quality issue. My car has 119580 miles. I had always car maintenance done at Hyundai Dealerships to make sure that it is maintained as per the company recommended. The Catalytic converter in my car was changed by the Hyundai Dealership (Key Hyundai Manchester, CT) at approximately 96000 miles as it had gone bad in April of 2024. At first I noticed that there’s a strong smell of oil when I am driving it. The engine was consuming a large amount of oil so much so that I have to keep an extra bottle of oil in my car. I will be driving and oil light shows up and I have had an oil change not just a week prior. I had an independent mechanic to come check it and he said a lot of oil is leaking out into the engine because, I never see any oil on the ground. Then finally the check engine light is on, the steering is shaking heavily and I have stopped driving it for my safety and that of others on the road.

Sep 20, 2025

Check engine light came on to check the oil and I had recently had an oil change and all of a sudden within a week or two I needed to fill my oil back up and it's gone through two quarts of oil since my oil change this has been going on for 2 years I did not know there was some place like this where I could follow a complaint. I constantly put oil in my car because my car is constantly low on oil and there is no evidence of the oil leaking onto the ground whatsoever. I don't know where the oil is going to but it's not leaking on the ground and there's just been a constant issue for the past 2-3 years

Engine is burning too much oil.Tested for leaks.none. Had combustion cleaning, valve cover gasket replaced and oil changed as per Advantage Hyundai instructions.still burning oil too fast.Hyundai is hiding behind the fact that my vehicle is out of warranty because its close to 100,00 miles. This is obviously a defect in the engine and they should stand by their work and replace it with no cost to me.There are all kinds of class action suits against them because of this issue.

Sep 8, 2025

The engine starting consuming a quart of oil in less than 500 miles of recent oil change. Car has 114,000 miles and due to oil consumption lifters are now ticking louder. I was not notified of the class action lawsuit that happened due to this same issue. Oil pressure light came on

I am the current owner a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. While I was driving my SUV on the highway at highway speeds at 60mph, the oil pressure and the check engine warning light illuminated all of sudden after around 1 hour of smooth ride. In the meantime, suddenly the vehicle lost motive power, the steering wheel seized and smoke came immediately. Losing motive power in running conditions and smoke coming out during failure could have endangered our lives. The smoke came out due to leakage of engine oil probably. The vehicle was stuck in the middle of the road. The vehicle was towed to the residence and then after Hyundai Dealership. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 76,245 only. Before reporting to NHSTA I have seen numerous complaints about high oil consumption and burnt valves on Theta II engines around 2017 santafe sport model and very similar occurrence of events happening to all while driving the vehicle on highways. Hyundai must need to provide support to this year model and make vehicles.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power after the engine made an abnormal sound. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local independent mechanic to be diagnosed, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not repaired, and the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, where DTC: P1326 was retrieved, and the vehicle was diagnosed with knock sensor signal range error, metal shavings into the engine, and other unknown failures. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.

Excessive oil consumption/ burning oil; oil light came on 1,500 miles after oil change.

Jul 30, 2025

I am unsure what component of the engine caused the issue. There was chance of engine failure while driving. While idle the engine was stuttering and the RPN dial was fluctuating. Engine persisted to stutter and jerk at random intervals when accelerating. The engine light came on flashing ~1 hour after the first sign of the issue. Immediately after the engine light came on the vehicle was moved off of the road and a tow truck was contacted to transport the vehicle to a Hyundai dealership. The vehicle was inspected at a manufacturer's dealership and the problem was resolved with a technician stating that the vehicle needed a "system update". There is also an ongoing issue with the vehicle excessively consuming oil.

Jul 29, 2025

Excessive engine oil consumption. The vehicle oil consumption is beyond my control, currently I am afraid to embark on vacation driving to friends or on vacation in other states. Low engine oil can result in engine overheating and fire, thus endangering life, family and property. I am currently adding oil every 14 days to ensure the engine is at a safe operating level for my own safety. I am requesting a one time manufacture's assistance to remedy this defective.

I have had this car since Sept 2023, it had about 85,000 miles when I got it. Before I had even owned it for a year and before it had 100,000 miles it was burning oil at an alarming rate! I took it to my dealership which did a consumption test and told me to bring it to Hyundai. Hyundai did their own oil consumption test which results proved my car was burning 3 quarts of oil in under 1,000 miles. Hyundai refused to do anything about it as well as the dealership I bought the car from (they say it is a Hyundai problem) I have spoken to corporate who refuse to fix it because I bought it out of warranty, which I was unaware of at the time I bought it. I am a single mother who has to work full time to support my family, my car has died numerous times and I am buying oil about once a week, I have had to call out of work due to it dying and it has died with my children in the car as well. I am afraid to drive it because I know it will die and I will be stranded but unfortunately I have no other options. It is a complete safety hazard and I can not trade or refinance because even tho I havent had it 2 years, I owe more than it is worth in value.

Jul 28, 2025

Bought my vehicle as second owner and 1 1/2 years into financing I discovered the piston rings are failing which is causing to much oil consumption. It’s burning oil to fast - in three weeks my car has burned through three quarts of oil. I do my regular oil changes as recommended and already change the gasket. If I have not checked my oil I would never had a clue. I am currently doing my oil changes because the dealer shops were not nor even knew of the burning oil issue. How does one car burn that much oil in three weeks. My extended warranty has exited and now my engine is failing. My vehicle was not included in the class action settlement. I am a teacher with children and don’t have the money to buy a new car let alone fix the engine. The vehicle has rough idling at times and doesn’t have the power to go sometimes. It’s failing quicker than I could imagine.

Jul 22, 2025

Car stopped running 4 months ago and had it towed to the shop and they did a Knock sensor update and sent us back with it. 4 months later check engine light comes on and take it in and they recommend a new engine and this car has a class action and they’re saying we don’t qualify. They’re saying it’s the piston rings. The car burns oil like crazy. Over 5 quarts in 2,500 miles consistently and the oil light never comes on. I have 2 kids that ride in this car for it to just die or for the engine to start fire is a risk I am not willing to take.

Jun 27, 2025

While driving my vehicle, the check engine light came on, and the engine entered limp mode, severely reducing power and acceleration. This presented a significant safety risk while traveling on the highway, especially during lane changes and merges. The issue was later diagnosed by a certified Hyundai dealer as Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1326, which relates to the knock sensor detecting potential engine bearing wear. The dealer confirmed this issue and performed related inspection work under Hyundai’s Service Campaign T3G. No prior warning signs appeared before the incident. Hyundai has issued a known campaign for this issue, but no recall appeared under my VIN at the time. I incurred rental and rideshare costs due to the vehicle being held at the dealer for several days. This condition severely impacts the drivability and safety of the vehicle.

Jun 27, 2025

This model engine is a common complaint easily found by quick internet searches. They have recalled SOME models, but not all. This car uses EXTREME amounts of oil. It is not normal. I have not had a car in my 38 years of driving that used anything even close. I do not have any leaks. This car requires 1 quart of oil every 500-700 miles. This is horrible for maintenance. It is very dangerous to an unsuspecting buyer. I found out about this when my engine light came on and to my surprise the oil was about empty after an oil change when I first purchased the car. This was only about 6 weeks in to having the vehicle! This is also horrible for the environment, expensive, and messy. Hyundai should be held accountable. The oil consumption is due to an engine defect that is not directly related to their current Lifetime limited warranty for connected bearing rods.

Jun 9, 2025

I went to get my oil changed, and I've noticed that not even 2week after the oil change the truck is 2 or 2 1\2 quarts low on oil. So, I was wondering if you have any other problems with this truck and the oil. The Santa Fe isn't linking any fluids under it.

Jun 7, 2025

I was driving to work when I heard a loud knocking noise in my engine shortly after beginning my trip. My vehicle then lost all acceleration power as I was making a left turn at a light. Then, the check engine and oil pressure warning lights activated simultaneously. Had the driver behind me not been maintaining a safe following distance, I certainly would have been rear-ended. After having the vehicle towed to a mechanic approved by my insurance company, I was told that the issue was possible engine failure. There were no warning lights or symptoms before this issue arose, and I still had 400 miles before I was due for another oil change.

May 20, 2025

At approximately 65,000 miles the car started using excessive amounts of oil in the crankcase. I visited the local Hyundai dealer who changed my oil and began monitoring the condition. I was instsructed to come back to the dealer every 1,000 miles for an oil top off and to report the consumption. On the third visit, the engine is now using approximately 2 quarts of oil in 1,000-1,100 miles. Extremely excessive. I inquired about a warranty claim but was denied since I was the second owner. Yet, Hyundai acknowledges problems with this engine and have established broader coverage for engine problems stemming from the rod bearing which includes coverage for the second owner. The high oil consumption underscores another problem with this horrible engine, and high oil consumption should be included in a recall and repairs.

May 6, 2025

While driving on a highway in April 2025, my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport suddenly lost all power after approximately 10 minutes of normal driving. All dashboard warning lights illuminated, and both the accelerator and brake pedals became unresponsive. I was forced to stop the vehicle using the handbrake in the middle of a 65 mph highway, creating an extremely dangerous situation for myself and other drivers. Prior to this incident, the vehicle had displayed the P1326 knock sensor code multiple times over a 10-month period, each time accompanied by hesitation when accelerating. The knock sensor was replaced twice under used car warranty by Honda. Despite these interventions, the same code and symptoms recurred. The Hyundai dealership(Dec 2024 at Montgomery, Jan 2025 at Enterprise) repeatedly stated that there was “nothing wrong with the engine.” After the highway failure, the vehicle was inspected by a collision center and an independent mechanic. They confirmed that Cylinder 4 had no compression and diagnosed a burnt valve. Full engine replacement was recommended. Hyundai initially indicated that the engine might be covered under the extended warranty but later denied the claim, stating that the damage was due to a cylinder issue and can not check bearing failure. They also claimed it was too late to determine whether the bearing was the cause. This is not an isolated issue. Many Hyundai owners across the U.S. have reported identical symptoms—P1326 code, hesitation, cylinder compression loss, and ultimately engine failure—particularly in vehicles equipped with the Theta II engine. These failures often occur around or after 100,000 miles, despite regular maintenance. This ongoing and widespread cylinder-related engine failure presents a serious safety risk and must be addressed through manufacturer accountability, improved diagnostic standards, and proactive repair or recall efforts.

My 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe had a new engine installed at the dealership, Fred Beans Hyundai Flemington, NJ. I picked it up on [XXX] on [XXX] (and after 134 miles) my car's check engine light came on. I rerouted to dealership about 8 miles. Sitting outside service bay, I smelled smoke and then saw smoke coming out of vents. I then jumped out of car and the car became engulfed in flames and subsequently exploded. The day I picked it up, I pointed out to the service manager that they had not reattached everything to the car properly, sloppy workmanship. Best guess is that they did not attach a valve correctly. The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the low oil warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact later added 2 quarts of oil to the engine; however, not too long after adding the oil, the contact checked the dipstick, and the oil had been consumed. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be serviced and the contact was informed that the engine oil was abnormally low. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 98,000.

Excessive Oil Consumption caused the PCV Sensor/Actuator (Exhaust Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve) to fail. While the vehicle is still operable, the failure causes engine timing to change resulting unpredictable losses in power during acceleration, excessive fuel consumption, and incomplete combustion passing through the Catalytic Convertor posing a risk for future component failure. In the four months that the vehicle is operating in this condition, with its check engine light on, I have had two near collisions while attempting to merge into roundabouts and freeway entry. Fortunately, both were avoided. I no longer attempt freeway entry during rush hour. Two independent service repair shops did a computer diagnostic test and confirmed the problem with the PCV components. They suggested that the excessive oil condition be corrected first. Otherwise, any replacement components will continue to fail. Excessive oil consumption appears to be a chronic problem in the Hyundai 2.4 L engine. The engine and drivetrain is covered under a 10 year or 100,000 warranty. A year earlier the dealership performed a controlled test when the vehicle only had 60,941 miles, where the initial oil loss was 2.5 quarts per 1,000 miles. An Oil Chamber Combustion Clean, where solvents are used to remove excess carbon was performed. It temporarily reduced the oil consumption to .7 quarts per 1,000 miles. This is still requiring a replacement of about 2 Quarts of oil between routine oil changes in a 5 quart system. The dealership indicated that it passed. About 3 months later the oil consumption increased to 1.0 Quart per 1,000 miles and 8 months later the PCV components failed. If the dealership did the right thing and repaired the engine to eliminate oil consumption, everything would have been fine. I am still trying to get the dealership and Hyundai to honor their warranty. for excess oil consumption. With it the PCV components are also replaced and all is good.

Car is using excessive oil

Feb 7, 2025

On December 28th, 2024 I was driving my SUV on the highway at highway speeds. I bought the suv from a Manchester Acura dealer on November 9, 2024. I am the second owner. While driving, the check engine light came on. I was able to complete my drive, but the car idled very rough. After getting the car home, my father checked the oil. It did not register on the dip stick. He put in about two quarts of oil. The check engine code was P0302, which is misfire in cylinder two. He proactively changed the spark plugs since the car had 92,000 miles on it. After changing the plugs, the code did not clear and the engine continued to idle rough. He did a compression test and confirmed that cylinder two had less than 50psi compression vs the other 3 cylinders which were at 170 psi. He also removed and inspected the new plugs after running the engine and cylinder 2 plug was already dark and oily whereas the other plugs were in as new condition. I opened a case with Hyundai Care America. They instructed me to take the suv to a Hyundai dealer for diagnosis. The verbal report of that diagnosis was burnt valves on cylinder two. The dealer stated that HCA would not cover a repair or engine replacement. Hyundai forums and NHSTA complaints are numerous around high oil consumption and burnt valves on Theta II engines. Hyundai needs to be held accountable.

My Engine malfunctioned while driving on the interstate at 70 mph. There were no lights that came on no notice just stopped excelerating. Thankfully after exiting the interstate I was able to get to a gas station safely and that is where the vehicle died altogether and would not start again. My husband and I checked the oil at that time and there was absolutely no oil in the engine. The worse part was that my husband had just put 3 quarts of oil in the engine on Sunday and this all happened on Friday of the same week. I work from home and had only traveled 300 miles that week total, so there was no reason for this to have happen. I had it towed to the car shop and they informed me that Cylinder 1 and 4 are not getting any compression at all. I just had the oil changed in this and am very good about keeping up on maintenance in my car. I have had problems with the oil pan cracking, got that fixed. I check my oil every time I put gas in the car due to the fact that I knew the engine was using oil but it was nothing this severe. I would only have to add one or two quarts of oil every other week and I drive a lot for my job. I have never had any lights come on to warn me, there were no noises that was coming from the engine, I did not have any discolored smoke from the back of the car when starting it. There was never any leaks on the ground either. I had a Hyundai Dealership in Springfield, IL look at it and they said it just eats oil nothing more. I had my mechanic look at it and he stated that I needed to keep a very close eye on it, so that is what I did. However, no one told me that this was going to happen. Now I am stuck with car and payment that I can not drive. No recall but several/hundreds of complaints on same thing? And NO RECALL????

The crank shaft failed leading to total engine failure. It's currently sitting at my mechanic's shop until I can get this sorted out, it can be inspected upon request. My engine failed while driving 75 mph on an interstate and could have lead to serious injury/death of myself, my passengers, and other drivers around me. The problem has been confirmed by my mechanic, an independent service center. I had complained to my local dealership service department a year or so ago about the amount of oil my car was going through, and was simply told "that's just an issue with this make/model" so was essentially told to live with it. The vehicle has not been inspected by law enforcement or an insurance company. I had the oil changed on 11/30/23 to ensure it was full while travelling. The oil light never came on. The check engine light had come on about a year prior, was checked at my local dealership service center via computer scan, and was told they couldn't find an issue. When I had my vehicle taken over to the mechanic, his reaction was "Oh geez, not another one." Apparently he has had to replace several of these Theta II 2.4L MIP engines recently.

I am reporting a Theta engine problem. This is a well documented problem across the nation. My car started knocking and losing oil after I bought it. At one point, I had to tow it to the dealership because the check engine light was flashing and the car was knocking and shuddering so bad, they told me not to drive the car any further. I have had the car back in the dealership several more times since then. The car currently has 110,000 miles on it, but the problems started before 100,000. I have contacted Hyundai, and they have told me that they won't do anything. They told me that I have a Theta engine and I have to go through the lawsuit. When I contacted the lawsuit, my car wasn't on the list of cars in the law suit even though Hyundai says that my car is one that could have the Theta engine. I had to continue to drive the vehicle and it is a safety issue at this point. The dealership said I had to drive it until the engine completely failed. That is a huge problem with safety. If my engine fails as I'm going up and down the mountains, it could cause me to be in an accident and it could cause me to hurt others. According to the articles that I have read, an engine failure can cause the rod to go through the engine and cause a fire! I know that cars can fail at any time....but when you know that your engine could fail at any time because of a manufacturer defect, that is a safety issue! I have done regular oil changes and done all the maintenance on this vehicle. My mom has let me borrow her car so that I don't have to drive an unsafe vehicle. I don't think that I should be financially responsible to replace this engine. Please let me know if you have any questions. The car is available for inspection.

My engine failed going 70mph on the highway with myself, husband and [XXX] child in the car 3.5 hours away from home. A Hyundai dealership in the state the car broke down in has the car. There is a recall on 2017 Sante Fe's; however, my VIN number is not included - even though the symptoms of our engine are exactly the same. The car has been maintained and has less than 80,000 miles on it. The check engine light never came on until minutes before the engine failed. Engine failure - Yes, vehicle is available for inspection. Car started shaking violently and would hesitate or not move at all when trying to accelerate. I was left in a few dicey situations when it would hesitate while trying to accelerate. Hyandai will not confirm there is a problem with this particular engine problem, however I’ve read there are many other people with the same car, same problem- Excessive oil consumption which causes damage to the pistons, which can cause compression problems and eventually engine failure. I believe this is what happened to my car. Hyandai has done a diagnostic but failed to cover it under their extended engine warranty. Their claim is that they extended the engine warranty for rod bearing failure only which they could not find in my vehicle. My vehicle has had regular maintenance and only has 95k on it. Yes the engine light came on and I took it to my mechanic and then to All Star Hyandai, Pittsburg Ca

I am the second owner of the car bought Oct of 2023. Car was burning through oil thought I needed an oil change and did this ( should not have needed it since it was done just before buying) and days later check engine light came on Hyundai said it was a knock sensor. They replaced it and exactly a month later check engine light came on again. Now they are saying engine is shot and will cost $20,000 to fix. Car had great maintenance records. These cars are not safe as the engine can blow or the car will come to a stop at any minute while driving down the road putting not only the vehicle occupants in danger but also anyone driving near them. First started December of 2023 and sencond problems was January of 2024. I will be uploading all the files I have related to all the times it has been looked over.

Engine oil consumption test at 1,000 miles after oil change. All oil gone. Happened for two oil changes. Engine light came on. I paid 5k in repairs for catalytic converter/manifold. Dealer contacted Hyundai to do combustion cleaning they said no. Dealer told me keep checking oil as my engine will seize on me. I'm terrified and this is dangerous to me and others. Hyundai knows of this oil engine problem still no recall.

This vehicle was purchased used in 2020. In August 2022, during a daily commute, the engine began to sputter, lose power, and ultimately shut off at a traffic light. Fortunately, this happened on surface roads where speeds are low and traffic lights are frequent. The car was safely restarted and brought to a nearby service center. The car was subsequently towed to a Hyundai dealership 1.5 hours away because the local dealership was overwhelmed with vehicles and had a five-month wait for appointments. Despite having less than 67,000 miles, the engine had been experiencing excessive oil consumption for over a year. According to the Hyundai service center, the engine needs replacement. The Hyundai service center in Killeen Texas indicated that three of the four cylinders are below their piston compression requirements. Public sentiment on the excessive oil consumption problem can be found in the numerous comments on this website: [Top Class Actions - Hyundai Class Action Alleges Excessive Oil Consumption] [XXX] ]. I reached out to the Chief Customer Officer at Hyundai Motor America to determine whether they would stand behind their product and provide compensation for this obvious defect. However, Hyundai refused to offer any compensation, stating the car was outside its 5-year, 60,000-mile warranty. The excessive oil consumption leading to engine failure is a potentially dangerous issue for these vehicles. After oil change, i noticed oil spots on driveway. Took it back to place that did oil change. They told me I had a crack in my oil pan and that it was caused by some sort of engine defect that causes engine oil pressure fluctuations that eventually cause the pan to crack. I believe NHTSA has opened an investigation into this issue.

am writing you today in frustration with my treatment at both your dealership Hyundai Streetsboro and Hyundai of Bedford. When I first purchased my vehicle I expressed concern regarding the hesitation while accelerating and the emense amount of oil this vehicle burns. When I scheduled all my services I expressed the same concern only to be told that it's normal rate or oil consumption. I am extremely nervous when merging into traffic because I never know when the car may decide to not accelerate. I have tired on numerous occasions to get this issue checked by two separate dealership but both dismissed my concerns. I have emails and expressed concerns when using the dealership online service request forms. In summary the vehicle hesitates when trying to accelerate, especially merging into traffic. The vehicle also burns oil at an unreasonable rate as a result of a faulty engine.

Driving down a 4 lane highway my car refused to accelerate and started shaking vigorously. My vehicles check engine light began to flask on and off. Had to pull off the high way and take the back roads the rest of the way home in fear that it would stop in the middle of the street. As we drove home, every time we would slow down or had to come to a stop the car would continue to shake and rattle with the check engine going and and off the rest of the way home. Took this to the dealership and they stated that I have a burnt exhaust valve on cylinder #2 along with needing a new catalytic converter and told me I should just replace the entire engine. Upon checking my oil, I realized it was consuming at a high rate. The car dealership said there was no problem with the car. A couple months later I took it to a Hyundai dealership and they said the same thing. Now I am 6 months into owning this vehicle. Same issue. I am putting 4 qt of oil in my vehicle a month. Google said there was recalls on my year for a bad crankshaft that was causing this issue. I called the Hyundai dealership again. They said there is no recall for my vin number. I am having the same problem described. Oil consumption at a high rate. Which is wearing down the bearings in the crankshaft, causing the over consumption. I was told because my SUV wasn't on the recall list, there was nothing they could do until it is put on the list.

Sep 30, 2023

My 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport's engine oil light comes on within just a month or two of an oil change. Hyundai service shop told me that my car was possibly burning oil. I learned that this is a common issue with some Hyundai's and Kia's when the vehicles reach around 90,000 miles. Mine began burning oil at around 88,000 miles. I went through what they call the Oil Consumption Test for three months. That resulted in them replacing my engine under warranty, thank goodness. I didn't feel safe for three months knowing that my car was burning oil. It seems this is a common issue that may warrant an investigation and/or possible recall.

Sep 30, 2023

My car began leaking oil. Hyundai said the oil pan was cracked. They indicated this is not under 100,000 miles/10 year warranty. The issue occurred shortly after they did an oil change. It seems since oil leaks of this type are a safety issue, and the cracked oil pan is a common issue, that it may need to be investigated.

Engine burns oil at an unnatural rate. Also has issues with bearings that wear out fast and burn more oil.

Vehicle is burning oil at an alarmingly higher amount than it should. Have filled the oil twice in the last month due to it being low. Have been tracking the oil levels for the past month and it is quickly losing oil (no stains in the driveway, white smoke out of the tailpipe, no oil splatter inside the engine compartment). Have been taking pictures of the dipstick while checking it regularly.

I went to take my car in for an oil change and every time i go in, my car is 3 quarts low on oil. I was told to take my car to the dealership in Hilton Head because the Savannah office couldn't get me in for an appointment for months. Hilton Head service center had me take my car there every 1,000 miles for an low oil consumption test. I was told not to put oil in the car even if the oil light came on which it did like maybe 200 miles before i was due to go back because it would throw off the test at the time. After doing this for 3 to 4 months of back and forth over there, then i was told that i needed to get my engine flushed, and it wasn't covered, so i had to get it financed. After flushing the engine, it did not solve the problem. Then i had to bring in all my receipts from my oil changes to make sure they were done on time. This all had been escalated to the Hyundai corporate office and they then denied replacing my engine because it was out of warranty. I think this is totally unfair that i have to continue putting oil in my car every 7 days as a result of them not replacing my engine. If for some reason i forget to put oil in my engine this could cause a fire or blow up while iam driving.

I notice when I start my car in the morning it is making a rattling noise, this also happens when I try to accelerate and the car will get stuck in gear and hesitate before speeding up. It's been dangerous trying to drive on this highway. I also notice a thick white smoke coming from my muffler. I had to replace my engine at approximately 111,000 miles. Prior to replacing the engine, the car required frequent oil changes prior to the 3,000 mile time frame. I took it to the Hyundai dealership but they said because it wasn't this specific issue, it wasn't covered under the special extended warranty. The car received regular oil changes and maintenance. I had to take the car to another maintenance shop to have the car repaired.

Engine failure due to defective engine from manufacturer

May 30, 2023

The car burns oil excessively. I have never had to change my oil, because there is never any oil left. I can fill the engine with oil and check it a week later and it will be low. I have checked underneath the car when it has been sitting and there is no evident leak. This car goes through oil very quickly. There is a recall on this vehicle for an older year for the same exact issue I am having, but not a recall on this year of this vehicle.

May 24, 2023

My vehicle had problems with oil consumption. I took it to Hyundai of Metairie and tried to tell them about the problem. They told me that they could not find an oil consumption issue, topped off my oil and then let me leave when I brought it back to them after an oil change that lost all of my oil in less than a month with no residue on my driveway and no obvious leak now they are telling me they will not fix my vehicle because I’m not the original owner of the vehicle, but I bought the Hyundai from Hyundai a Metairie and they did not disclose the information of oil consumption to me once I purchased a vehicle, so that technically is considered vehicle fraud. The lack of knowledge about the oil consumption at purchase was where they went wrong and now that there is a serious issue that will not stop and it is just outside of warranty even though I brought it to them several times before the warranty now they will not honor it. This recall on this issue has cost me thousands of dollars on a vehicle that will eventually give me engine failure.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 MPH, there was a burning odor, and a knocking sound coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle then stalled and failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to a dealer to be diagnosed and it was determined that the engine needed to be replaced due to a rod bearing failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and encouraged the contact to submit a complaint to the Better Business Bureau and the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000. The contact stated that the manufacturer declined to provide assistance because the failure occurred out of warranty and the mileage on the vehicle. The dealer sided with the contact and is trying to offer a solution. A rental car was provided to the contact.

I purchased my vehicle at 51,700 miles. Approx 2 months …1,000-2,000 miles later my car went into limp mode and wouldn’t exceed 20 mph. I also noticed that my vehicle was consuming 4-qts of oil every 1,000 miles since then and is experiencing engine failure. It’s a safety hazard to myself and others as the car just shuts off completely while driving. Hyundai won’t do anything about it. I have documents to show every oil change/maintenance on vehicle.

Apr 19, 2023

Purchased car used April of 2022. After a couple of months of driving noticed that it was consuming a lot of oil. Thought maybe the oil change was not done right. Went had another oil change. Noticed more oil being consumed. Took to Hyundai dealer for ABS recall. While I was there I told them about the oil. I was then notified about the oil consumption problems. I started the oil consumption test. After a 1000 miles. Hyundai dealer stated oil consumption at an excess rate. Submitted for PA for top engine clean and was denied. I am scared to death that the engine is going to seize up while driving. There was no warning lights that my oil was low.

Apr 10, 2023

I have problems with higher oil consumption, the Hyundai require a new engine but the Extended warranty don't want cover and requested a Tier down and warranty want me to cover for the tier down (2,925 dls) when my copay it is 250 dls and cover full engine and full transmission.

I was driving on the highway in a mountainous area going downhill. The cruise control was on with the speed set at about 80 miles/hour. Then the car was losing speed, the RPM needle started swinging from left and right. I stepped on the accelerator but the car continue losing speed to 40 miles/hour and continue losing speed. I turned on the emergency light to warn the other drivers and was able to move the car to the shoulder and stopped it without an accident. But the cars behind me could have smashed into my car that day and that would be the last day for my mother (in the car at that time) and me. The car had 41000 miles on it and we had the maintenance done just recently. I did not notice anything else abnormal before the incident. We reported the problem to the dealer and have to pay for the dealer to inspect the car. The inspection has been scheduled but not done yet.

My car burns oil at an insane rate. It uses 1qt of oil every 300 miles. Hyundai has been so unhelpful and wants me to spend nearly $1,000 (oil consumption test and combustion cleaning) to “hopefully” fix this issue. This issue began around 85000 miles.

Mar 7, 2023

After having my oil changed, the car Developed a severe oil leak May 30. Dealership says they fixed it. Continue to have oil leak. Having to put 3 quarts of oil in the car every 2 weeks. 2 days ago, the car would not accelerate. Then stalled later that day. Thankfully I was able to pull off the road. vehicle was towed to local Hyundai dealership however they are requesting me continue to drive the vehicle for another 1000 miles to see if it still leaks.

Mar 2, 2023

The engine failed due to sludge in the engine and excessive oil usage. It is a 2017 car and it required an engine replacement at just 52K miles. There was no sign of an issue other than needing oil more frequently. It was not burning or dripping oil. A service appointment was made when the excessive oil usage was noticed, but the car quickly deteriorated and by the time we got in for our service appointment (which took many weeks to find a Hyundai car service appointment in our entire area), the car started to make a noise. We drove the car to the service department with a slight engine sound and waited 2 months trying to get a new engine approved. We were denied due to "excessive owner neglect" even with oil receipts submitted. So we took the car back with no new engine and it now had little acceleration and was bucking.

Feb 23, 2023

I purchased my vehicle at 50,700 miles in February of 2022. I have experienced engine problems related to oil consumption which Hyundai stated that they will not cover because I am out of warranty due to being the second owner of the vehicle. As of now my car shuts off while driving at any time and I can’t exceed 60 mph which prevents me from driving a lot of places. I am fearful of having my children in the car because of the issues that I have experienced.

Feb 21, 2023

My vehicle is consuming oil at an unacceptable rate. I have to put oil in it weekly and the oil indicator light doesn’t work. It has been ongoing since I purchased it and the Hyundai service center said it was carbon build up which they had cleaned. It cost me over $500 and didn’t solve the issues. It also doesn’t always want to shift gears and feels like it’s starting to go into limp mode. Which I had to have my vehicle towed last year and they said it was spark plugs. I am extremely disappointed and regret getting this “certified” vehicle.

Engine was consuming oil badly. Engine has 98000 miles on it. Then driving one day, lost most power. So I got it home and ran codes and was having multiple cylinder misfire. Had it towed into dealership, and then did a diagnostic and claimed there is bad cylinder head damage and I would need a whole new engine. Which they said would not be covered under warranty. Which seems odd since these engines have a lifetime warranty because of a class action lawsuit. So I started a case with hyundai corporate, and they said they weren't going to cover it under their 5 year 60k warranty. But that isn't the warranty that should cover it. So, I am in the process of having the BBB dispute this for me. Because I cannot afford the huge amount to have them put a new engine in. This has been the biggest pain and I have been out a car for months with no loaner or anything.

My engine has low compression in the third cylinder (20 lbs) and has been using about a quart of oil for every 500 miles. The engine failure puts owners and commuting traffic in danger due to the vehicle running rough then eventually stalling. I had to keep one foot on the accelerator and one foot on the brake to keep the vehicle running until I was able to get it to the dealership. My vehicle has been well maintained and only has 130,977 miles on it. It is a 2017 Santa Fe Sport with the 3.0 liter engine. The engine has been inspected by the dealership and they recommend a new engine.

Nov 9, 2022

Since July my vehicle has been consuming oil at a very high rate. Had an oil change done on 7/8/22 at approximately 56,000 miles. In late September/early October, my engine oil light would randomly go on and off at approximately 59,000 miles. Took the car to my mechanic on 10/13/22, thinking it was a sensor gone bad but I was extremely low on oil at 59,262 miles. Took my vehicle to my mechanic on 11/9/22 to have the oil checked since at the 10/13/22 visit he informed me that there was an issue with my vehicle model burning through oil. After putting only 861 miles on the vehicle since the oil change on 10/13/22, I had burned through 3 quarts of oil. I now have to check my oil every 500-1000 miles to make sure that I don't run out of oil and my engine seizes up. The Hyundai dealer informed there is nothing they can do about it unless Hyundai will approve a oil consumption test and that is not guaranteed even though I informed them that this is a known issue with the certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles to the point that a class action suit was filed in April of 2022 over the issue in California.

I bought the SUV in late June of 2022. Second day of driving it, it came to a complete stop without warning. Fast forward to late October 30 of 2022 one of the lights came on, so I waited for Monday 31 and was on my way to work when the suv was making sudden stops and I took to Autozone to run the computer. Sure enough it was related to the Engine with only 86,000+ and took it to the dealership. As of November 2 of 2022 haven't heard from the dealership about the issue. I'm reporting the issue since I've reading issues related to the engine

Oct 23, 2022

I was on a trip home from Disney land with my son, best friend and her daughters. We got into NC and stopped for gas about 20 minutes later the car stopped accelerating. I pulled over and looked at the car to see if I saw anything which I didn’t so I looked up the closest mechanic and found a Firestone. We got back in the car and started to drive there and the car completely stopped Accelerating so we pulled over and I called AAA and had the car towed to the fire stone. From there the fire stone said there were engine issues that had a recall with Hyundai and I had to bring it to the dealership. So I had the car towed to the Hyundai dealership in Wake Forest North Carolina. At first they told me that there was an oil leak in the engine which caused the engine to fail and they had no idea why that was happening but that I would need a new engine and Catalytic converter and it would cost me over $12,000 which I do not have. I remembered I had a max care extended warranty and that will cover the cost of the engine but not the catalytic converter which is soaked with oil and cannot be reused. Hyundai should replace this as I am reading there have been a lot of issues with this engine part. My local mechanic in Virginia also said he gets 1 to 2 Catalytic converter repairs for Hyundais a month this is not acceptable. Oil leaking into the engine is very serious could’ve caused a fire and an accident on the highway when I was with my child and my friends children this is serious that Hyundai needs to take serious I have called and open multiple cases with them and they have denied it saying it is not covered by their warranty The car is a 2017 and should not be having these kind of problems. I cannot afford a $7000 catalytic converter that was caused by an oil leak in the engine and no fault of my own I have maintained the car like I was supposed to. I have done research and found many other people who’ve had the same issue that needs to be a recall

I took my Hyundai to the dealer Anderson Hyundai in Anderson SC in March 2022 for an issue with all 3 of the brake warning lights coming on and was told that there was a recall. I was told that they took care of the issue. A week later all 3 lights came on again and the service manager informed me that that fix didn't work. I was also told that my car could catch fire and that I should receive another notice. When I received that 2nd recall notice I was then told that they could look at it but it would cost me to fix it. The issue is when I start the car the odometer spikes up to the 20 mile mark and then those 3 warning lights come on it isn't fixed. It has also displayed those warning lights while traveling on the road.

UNKNOWN It started with the engine suddenly reducing my speed down to 10 mph while I was driving on the freeway, the check engine light turned on. We then took it to the Hyundai dealership who turned us a way and told us they couldn’t see us for several months. So we were forced to take it to a repair shop who ran a compression test and told us it failed. We were able to speak to the dealership a few days later who asked us to take it in they re ran the test and told us it passed but they needed to do some updates to the knock sensor due to multiple recalls they had failed to inform us on (even though they had conducted an update back in 2019) after this they conducted several oil consumption tests which have averaged a liter or more consumed per 500 miles. During this time the vehicle repeatedly had knocking sounds, warning light flashes, sputtering of the engine, occasional stalling, and marked issues with acceleration from a stop, amongst other concerning issues. We then we’re required to have a combustion cleaning by the dealership, this not only didn’t solve any of the previous issues but increased the oil consumption to as much as 1.5 liters in around 330 miles. The dealership confirmed that the vehicle had been properly maintained and it hadn’t been tampered with but Hyundai continues to refuse to replace the engine. Even though many of the other engines with similar issues have since caught on fire and endangered the occupants. The vehicle continues to jerk when accelerating and consume oil at an alarming rate.

Our engine keeps burning through oil, we have tried to work with Wilkins Hyundai service center and Hyundai's consumer affair. We have gone through their process of going in for oil changes at every 1,000 miles, however, oil has been burning before the required mark and we have gone in at 700 miles or less because the engine light goes on our engine knocks, the truck shakes, and the truck wants to shut off as we try to accelerate. We do not feel safe in our truck. How it began, towards the end of May, we called the service desk to disclose how we had an oil change and our truck had the oil light on, which was odd because we had just had an oil change. Wilkins service center asked us to take in the truck and they added the oil. Fast forward we have done this several times and we were asked to bring in the truck at 1000 miles, 700 miles, and we found ourselves coming in for oil changes sooner than the suggested miles. We were asked to follow their oil change procedure and come in three times then we will take a combustion test. To this day, we are receiving the run around with excuses and we have followed what the service center employees (past and present) have told us to do. During this time there have been major turnovers at the Wilkins service center and we have dealt with different employees with different excuses at the service center regarding our truck, even though we have complied with previous management. Regardless of who we dealt with, our vehicle was purchased there at Wilkins and has only been serviced there, new management has not been helpful with our situation that is not our fault. There is an issue with the engine we are aware of the HyundaiThetaEngineSettlement.com, as the service people should also be aware. We are now going on a month of no follow-up as to a resolution after we complied at our end, there is a paper trail, notes in their "system" and now they want us to restart the process all over again because of their error.

THERE HAS BEEN A KNOCK SINCE THE CAR WAS BOUGHT 3 YRS AGO. IT BURNS THREW AT ABOUT1-2 QUART OF OIL EVERY 2000 MILES TRIGGERING THE OIL LIGHT TO COME ON. OIL CHANGES ARE DONE EVERY 3000 MILES WITH FULL SYNTHETIC ALWAYS. IT'S ALSO BEEN TAKEN INTO HYUNDAI OF OLYMPIA FOR ACCELERATION ISSUE WHILE DRIVING (DOESN'T SHIFT UP/DOWN, SHIFT VERY HARD, STUTTERS WHEN SHIFTING) ALSO ASKED ABOUT OIL CONSUMPTION WHEN TAKEN IN FOR RECALL AND WAS TOLD THE OIL CONSUMPTION WAS NORMAL.

I AM A RETIRED AUTOMOTIVE RESTORATION SHOP OWNER OF 40 YEARS AND HAVE HAD ARTICLES WRITTEN ABOUT MY SHOP SO I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THE KNOCK IS COMING FROM THE ROD BEARINGS! IT SEEMS AS THOUGH HYUNDAI DEALERSHIPS THINKS AND ACTS LIKE EVERYONE THEY ENCOUNTER WITH THIS ISSUE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO WAYNE MAZDA (SISTER STORE OF WAYNE HYUNDAI) FOR THEM TO TELL ME 2 DAYS LATER THE ENGINE BLEW AT 33K MILES AND I HAVE ONLY OWNED THE CAR FOR 10 MONTHS. MY CASE MANAGER THROUGH CORPORATE CALLED ME YESTERDAY AND STATED ENGINES ARE ON BACK ORDERED AND I PROBABLY WOULDN'T GET MY CAR BACK TILL MID JUNE OR LATER. WAYNE HYUNDAI WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO HAVE A FREE RENTAL CAR SO I AM PAYING OUT OF POCKET FOR MY RENTAL WHICH WILL BE REIMBURSED HOWEVER I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL TAXES AND FEES THAT APPLY. SUV GOT PROGRESSIVELY WORSE WITH TIME, STARTED LOSING POWER WHEN TRAVELING UPHILL.WAS ALMOST IN TWO BAD ACCIDENTS BEFORE IT STOPPED RUNNING ALL TOGETHER, SMOKING. TOWED TO DEALERSHIP AND DIAGNOSED WITH A BAD ENGINE FROM ASSEMBLY LINE. CAN NOT EVEN GET IT REPAIRED FOR MONTHS DUE TO BACK ORDER ON ENGINES...CONTACTED HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND ASKED THEM TO TAKE THE DEFECTIVE CAR BACK. IT IS A 3 YEAR LEASE WITH 1 YEAR LEFT...THEY REFUSE TO TAKE THE SUV BACK...EXPECT ME TO KEEP A DEFECTIVE SUV THAT I HAVE NO FAITH IN DRIVING EVEN WITH A NEW ENGINE. I DON'T FEEL SAFE IN THIS VEHICLE. BUT HYUNDAI IS REFUSING TO TAKE THEIR DEFECTIVE SUV BACK....JUST NOT RIGHT. ALL OF THIS IS DOCUMENTED. SUV LOST POWER ON TWO OCCASIONS, ONCE WHILE DRIVING 45-50 MPH ON A FLAT SURFACE THEN AGAIN TRAVELING 65 MPH IN THE MOUNTAINS TRAVELING UPHILL. IT ALSO HAD SEVERAL TIMES I WOULD HIT A BUMP AND IT WOULD LOSE POWER DRIVING ON A FLAT SURFACE.

SINCE I TOOK POSSESSION OF THIS CAR, I HAVE BEEN HAVING REPEATED OCCURRENCES OF ENGINE STALLING COUPLED WITH THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT GOING ON. THIS HAPPENS WHEN I MAKE EITHER LEFT OR RIGHT TURNS INTO TRAFFIC: ACCELERATION STALLS COMPLETELY FOR 2-3 SECONDS, AND THE TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHT FLASHES. I CANNOT GET THE CAR TO ACCELERATE AT ALL, EVEN WITH THE PEDAL FULLY DEPRESSED TO THE FLOOR. THE ENGINE REVS EXTREMELY HARD, BUT THE CAR DOES NOT ACCELERATE. THIS HAPPENS ON COMPLETELY DRY PAVEMENT. THERE IS SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH THE 2017 HYUNDAI SANTA FE, AND SOMEONE IS GOING TO DIE AS A RESULT OF THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE COME CLOSE TO BEING REAR ENDED MULTIPLE TIMES, AND I HAVE NEARLY BEEN T-BONED WHEN TAKING A TURN IN FRONT OF ON-COMING TRAFFIC. INTERMITTENTLY THE VEHICLE WILL HESITATE DURING ACCELERATION FROM A STANDING START. IT APPEARS RELATED TO TURBO LAG, BUT TO THE EXTREME AND IS A DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE. MOST RECENTLY, AS I WENT TO TAKEOFF I WAS MOMENTARILY STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET AS I WAS PULLING INTO ON-COMING TRAFFIC. THIS IS JUST THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT A TURBO BOOST IS SUPPOSED TO PROVIDE. THIS ISSUE IS WELL-DOCUMENTED ON THE HYUNDAI AUTO FORUMS AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY. AGAIN, THIS NOT AN INCONVENIENCE. IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND HYUNDAI SEEMS UNCONCERNED ABOUT SOLVING THIS ISSUE. SOMEONE IS GOING TO DIE UNLESS YOU FORCE THEM TO FIX THIS ISSUE. AND IF YOU DON'T, THE BLOOD WILL BE ON THE NHTSA'S HANDS AS WELL. THIS IS ALSO NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS OCCURED, BUT THE MOST RECENT AND SERIOUS EXAMPLE SINCE I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE.

WHEN TURNING FROM A DEAD STOP THE ANTI SLIP LIGHT COMES ON WHEN THIS OCCURS, THIS HAS HAPPENED DURING DRY WEATHER. THIS OCCURS MOST FREQUENTLY IN EITHER ECO OR REGULAR DRIVING MODE, NOT SO MUCH WITH SPORT MODE. I DON'T LIKE DRIVING IN SPORT MODE TOO MUCH AS IT WASTES FUEL. I'VE NOTED A WHOLE LOT OF COMPLAINTS OF THIS ISSUE AND FEEL THAT HYUNDAI NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS, BEFORE AN ACCIDENT OCCURS! ON OTHER OCCASIONS, THE CAR FEELS LIKE STALLING WHILE DRIVING AND THEN PICK UP THE SPEED AGAIN. THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE AND I HAD BOUGHT TO THE SALES PERSON'S KNOWLEDGE AT THE BEGINNING, WHEN HE DROVE AROUND TO FEEL ABOUT THE SAME, IT DIDN'T OCCUR AT THAT TIME. EXCESSIVE ENGINE BRAKING ON DOWNHILL ROLL WITH CRUISE ENGAGED, WILL DOWNSHIFT THEN DOWNSHIFT AGAIN. WHILE REDUCING THE SPEED THE CRUISE WILL CAUSE THE TRANSMISSION TO UP-SHIFT STILL ROLLING DOWN THE SAME HILL AT THIS POINT THE CRUISE REALIZES THE SPEED INCREASE AND DOES A DOUBLE DOWNSHIFT FROM WHERE IT WAS. AT THIS POINT THE RPM HAS JUMPED TO JUST UNDER 5000 WITH THE ENGINE WHINING LIKE ITS IN PAIN. I LIVE IN AND TRAVEL, TO AND FROM WORK IN THE LOWER SAVANNAH RIVER AREA OF SOUTH CAROLINA. THE HILL THAT I WAS ON IS ABOUT THE LENGTH FOOTBALL FIELD AND THE SPEED LIMIT IS 55MPH UNSURE OF THE GRADE, BUT AS I EXPLAINED WHERE WE LIVE. THE FIRST TIME I NOTICED THIS ISSUE THE ODOMETER HAD JUST OVER A THOUSAND MILES AND JUST THOUGHT IT WAS AN ANOMALY BUT NOW IT HAS JUST UNDER THREE THOUSAND MILES AND IT STILL HAS THE PROBLEM. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED AS A WEDDING GIFT FOR MY WIFE AND SHE'S SCARED TO DRIVE IT BECAUSE OF THE CRUISE CONTROL ISSUES. MY 2017 HYUNDAI SANTA FE SPORT 2.0T ULTIMATE HESITATES STARTING FROM A STOP ESPECIALLY ON TURNS, TO THE POINT THAT IT CAN BE DANGEROUS, AS IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL SECONDS BEFORE IT WILL FULLY ACCELERATE AND I CAN AVOID ANY ONCOMING TRAFFIC. IT SEEMS MORE PRONOUNCED IN REGULAR AND ECO MODE THAN SPORT MODE. THE ANTI-SKID TRACTION LIGHT USUALLY GOES ON WHEN IT IS HAPPENING. THIS OCCURS AT SLOW SPEED. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALER, AND IT WAS CHECKED BY A FACTORY REP WHO WAS THERE THAT DAY, THEY TOLD ME IT WAS JUST THE WAY THE CAR WORKS AND IT IS THE AUTOMATIC ANTI-SKID TRACTION CONTROL WORKING.I HAVE BEEN JUST VERY CAREFUL NOT TO TURN WITHOUT A LOT OF SPACE FROM ANY ONCOMING CARS AND I TRY TO USE SPORT MODE TO LESSEN THE OCCURRENCES. THIS OF COURSE REDUCES FUEL ECONOMY. I HAVE NOW SEEN ONLINE REPORTS BY MANY OTHER OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND REALIZE IT IS DEFINITELY NOT NORMAL AND NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED. I PURCHASED A NEW 2017 SANTA FE SPORT ON 5-26-17. ON 7-19-17 AT AROUND 7100 MILES I RECEIVED A MESSAGE WARNING ME OF THE ENGINE OVERHEATING. I PUT A PHONE CALL IN THE FOLLOWING MORNING TO MY DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD TO BRING IT INTO THE SHOP 7-20-17 (THUR). THAT AFTERNOON I RECEIVED A CALL FROM MY SERVICE ADVISER STATING THERE WAS NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AND THEY COULD NOT FIND AN ISSUE. I THEN RESTATED IT WAS NOT AN ENGINE LIGHT BUT AN ACTUAL MESSAGE STATING THE ENGINE WAS OVERHEATNG. HE THEN CALLED ME BACK 10 MINUTES LATER STATING THERE IN FACT WAS A LEAK IN THE WATER PUMP AND THEY NEEDED TO REPLACE THE GASKET AND THAT THEY WOULD NOT HAVE THE PART UNTIL 7-25-17 (TUES). WHEN I FINALLY GOT MY CAR BACK ON THE 26TH (WED) ALL SEEMED FINE AGAIN. ON FRIDAY 7-28-17 WHILE DRIVING ON CRUISE CONTROL AT 60 MILES PER HOUR I FELT THE CAR DOWN SHIFT AND RPM'S STARTED GOING WELL OVER 5000 AND THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IT WAS TO PUSH ON THE BREAK THIS HAPPENED TWICE WITHEN AN HOUR SPAN. I CONTACTED DEALER AGAIN AND WAS TOLD TO BRING CAR BACK. NOTE THEY ALSO HAD TO FIX A SCRATCH PUT ON MY PASSENGER MIRROR FROM WHEN CAR WAS SERVICED THE FIRST TIME. I BROUGHT MY SANTA FE BACK IN ON MONDAY 7-31-17 AND FINALLY DECIDED TO CONTACT SERVICE DEPARTMENT ON WED 8-2-17 WHEN NO BODY CALLED TO LET ME KNOW OF ISSUES. SINCE THEN TODAYS DATE IS 8-10-17 I CONTACTED DEALER AGAIN TO FIND OUT STATUS AS OF RIGHT NOW THEY HAD TO REPLACE HEAD GASKET , REPROGRAM CRUISE CONTROL AND REPLACE THERMOSTAT ON TOP OF THE GASKET THEY ALREADY REPLACED ON WATER PUMP. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ALSO STATED THEY STILL SMELL COOLANT IN MY SUV WHICH CONCERNS ME STILL SINCE I AM 5 MONTHS PREGNANT. I DID START CASE WITH HYUNDAI USA AND AM WAITING TO HERE WHAT OPTIONS I MAY HAVE BUT KNOW I DO NOT WANT THIS SUV BACK FOR MY SAFETY.

2017 SANTA FE SPORT 2.0T ULTIMATE AWD - HESITATION OCCURS WHEN ACCELERATING FROM LOW SPEEDS, MOST FREQUENTLY OBSERVED WHEN MAKING TURNS. STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR CAUSES THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT TO BLINK AND THE ENGINE TO EFFECTIVELY STALL OUT FOR A FEW SECONDS. WHEN THE THROTTLE DOES ENGAGE AFTER THE HESITATION, IT IS IN A VIOLENT MANNER. THIS HAPPENS MORE FREQUENTLY THAN NOT, AND IS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS. I'VE OWNED THIS VEHICLE FOR OVER A YEAR AND HAVE 20,000+ MILES ON IT. THIS IS A REOCCURRING ISSUE. HAD I BEEN AWARE OF THIS SITE, I WOULD'VE FILED A COMPLAINT IMMEDIATELY.

WITHIN DAYS OF TAKING DELIVERY, THE VEHICLE WOULD TAKE 3-4 SECONDS TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP, AND WOULD NOT FULLY ACCELERATE UNTIL ALMOST 10 SECONDS LATER, CREATING A HUGE SAFETY ISSUES FOR TIMES WHEN SPEEDY ACCELERATION (AT INTERSECTIONS, CLOSE CALLS, ETC.) WAS PARAMOUNT. FROM THERE, THE INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM GLITCHED OUT AND WOULD NOT TURN ON UNTIL I RESTARTED THE CAR, AND IT HAD ISSUES WITH VOICE COMMANDS INTERMITTENTLY, DEFEATING THE PURPOSE OF A HANDS-FREE DEVICE (ONCE AGAIN CREATING MORE SAFETY CONCERNS). MOST REGULARLY, THE VEHICLE WOULD STRUGGLE SO BADLY TO ACCELERATE FROM 0-40, AND 50-60, AND WOULD REDLINE, CAUSING HUGE STRESS AND STRAIN ON THE VEHICLE'S POWER TRAIN. HYUNDAI TOLD ME "THIS IS NORMAL" WHICH IT IS NOT. THIS HAPPENED DAILY AT INTERSECTIONS, BACK ROADS, AND ON HIGHWAYS--IT DID NOT DISCRIMINATE. I HAD SEVERAL NEAR MISSES WHEN THE VEHICLE REFUSED TO ACCELERATE. IN FACT, JUST TODAY, I WENT TO ACCELERATE THROUGH A TURN AND HAD THE GAS PEDAL FLOORED BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PAST 10 MPH. IT TOOK A FULL 20 SECONDS TO GET UP TO SPEED. THIS HAS HAPPENED IN ALL DRIVING MODES: ECO, NORMAL, AND TURBO.

MY NEW HYUNDAI SANTA FE HAS A HESITATION OR PAUSE PROBLEM. RANDOMLY THE ENGINE OR POWER TRAIN DOES NOT RESPOND WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE. IT IS A DANGEROUS SAFETY PROBLEM WHEN IT HAPPENS. IF YOU ARE ENTERING A HIGHWAY, SLOWING DOWN AND THEN RE ACCELERATING, ENTERING AN INTERSECTION FROM A STOP SIGN. THE CONDITION CAN LEAVE YOU IN A PANIC SITUATION WHEN THERE IS NO RESPONSE FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THEN THE ACCELERATION KICKS IN. YOUR DRIVING TIMING CONFUSES OTHERS APPROACHING YOU. THE CONDITION HAPPENS GOING STRAIGHT OR TURNING. YOU COULD BE COMPLETELY STOPPED, ROLLING SLOWLY.. I HAVE DRIVEN THIS VEHICLE FOR 800 MILES. IT HAS A 2.0 LITER ENGINE WITH A TURBO.
