The vehicle developed loud engine knocking and abnormal noise consistent with known Hyundai engine defects. The vehicle is unsafe to operate and has been retained at an authorized Hyundai dealership since October 25, 2025. Hyundai vehicles with similar engine failures have been documented to catch fire, including while parked. Despite the known defect pattern, the manufacturer is refusing warranty coverage, alleging lack of complete oil change records, without providing proof that maintenance caused the failure. This represents a serious safety risk to occupants and the public. My family includes a child with a motor disability, which significantly increases the danger in the event of fire or engine failure.

I have been experiencing issues with oil consumption, having to get oil changes every 2 months and sometimes monthly with no reported leaks from 2 different mechanics. I have been very high maintenance over my oil. While I was driving on the highway, my vehicle began to shake and a knocking sound was heard. I felt the vehicle begin to jerk but no warning lights were on. I was no longer able to drive and had to pull over and wait for a tow to my mechanic's garage. The mechanic let me know there was an issue with the engine, specifically the 3rd cylinder and the piston. It does not put out as much pressure as it is supposed to. I brought the vehicle to the dealership after and they confirmed this was an issue and quoted me $8700 in repairs. There were no warning lights and no engine lights prior to this happening. I was informed by my mechanic that this is a known issue with Hyundai in their 2018 models having failing engines. I purchased the vehicle certified pre-owned with a guarantee from the dealership that I was purchasing a reliable vehicle that should have no issues of this degree.

Engine burns prodigious amounts of oil. Uses one quart in about 400 miles. Hyundai verified this with their 1000 mile oil consumption test. The only reason that this engine did not spin the crankshaft bearings from running dry on oil is because I was so diligent in filling the crankcase. A service writer at Happy Hyundai said that I needed a new long block, but the dealership refused because I had 103,000 miles on the engine. They knew about the problems with oil burning on Theta engines, but were happy to send me on my way knowing that I would be putting oil in my car often. This is not acceptable. Can you help me?

This engine is burning oil. Its mixing oil with gasoline in the cylinders. Its fouling spark plugs and consuming large amounts of oil with absolutely no visible oil leaks. The exhaust is black. PCV valve is clean. Engine is misfiring due to spark plug fouling. New spark plugs and coils. Multiple dealers have stated this is a KNOWN defect with this particular GDI engine but Hyundai refuses to issue a recall.

I recently purchased this used vehicle in June(2025) and after a couple of months of owning the vehicle, I started noticing the car oil level when I checked, started being lower than normal pretty frequently. And it has gotten to the point where I would have to top the oil off every week only after driving a few 100 miles. When I went for my oil change this October, I did informed Hyundai about the issue and they told me to drive the vehicle for 900 miles, do not top it off. And I am following what they're saying, and right now, I just checked my oil, and I have only driven it for 468 miles since I had gotten it changed on October 22nd of this year, and it's showing about a 1/2 quart low at the dipstick already. But if it gets too low before the 900 miles, I would take it to Hyundai so as not to cause any damage to the engine driving it with the oil too low if it gets to that point. The service tech did state that the first step in correcting the issue was to do a combustion flush. And I hope that Hyundai is taking care of the issue for us consumers. I appreciate your prompt response regarding this matter. Thank you. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I'm the second owner of this vehicle, I purchased it when it was one year old. I've provided careful maintenance, as this is my only vehicle. In the last year+ it started burning more and more oil. I was told by a mechanic that there were no signs of leakage and that these engines tend to burn a lot of oil so I was very careful to monitor levels and up the oil changes. 6 months ago, it was in the shop for new brakes and had a complete diagnostic exam and there were no issues with the engine. Two weeks ago, before a road trip, I again had full diagnostics done on the vehicle and there were no codes that popped up. The vehicle died on my trip. Reading the codes, I received my first code regarding problems with my cylinders after the vehicle died. Now I need a completely new engine because cylinders 1 and 3 failed. The car only has 80,000 miles on it. In all my years of my family owning different vehicles, I've always owned vehicles until they were well over 100,000 miles. The only two vehicles owned by my family that ever needed engine replacement early in their lives were both Hyundai vehicles. After I was told that I needed a new engine at 80,000 miles, I was told that this was not due to the one specific problem Hyundai would cover so I have to pay to replace it myself. There are a plethora of forums, mechanic experiences, etc, that show these 2.4L engines have this exact problem, but Hyundai washes their hands of us. As a second owner, I don't qualify for the engine warranty, which was extended to 120,000 because Hyundai knows these engines are horrible. My warranty ended when the car was 5 years old, and had 60,000 miles. And up until last week, I've never had an engine code pop up in diagnosis so I have no idea how I was supposed to predict premature engine failure and remedy it within that time frame. It's just another hit against anyone who can't afford to buy a brand new vehicle.

The contact owns a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. The contact stated that while driving to the residence at a moderate speed, the oil warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The following day, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, and the contact was informed that there was no oil in the engine even though an oil change had been performed a month earlier. The vehicle was taken to another independent mechanic, where an oil change was performed. After the oil change, the contact stated there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the engine while driving at various speeds. The contact then stated that while at a stop light, the engine seized while depressing the accelerator pedal, with several unknown warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to the dealer, and the contact was informed that the crankshaft rod was defective. The dealer linked the failure to Hyundai recall 953; however, the contact was later informed that since the vehicle was not serviced for a prior knock sensor recall, the vehicle no longer qualified for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure, and the contact was provided a case number. The contact was later informed by the manufacturer that the vehicle would not be serviced under warranty. The contact stated that the recall was placed on the vehicle prior to owning the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 149,000.

In 2023, I purchased this car in December. I didn' t know this car would have such known problems. In over a year and a half, the spark plugs have been changed 5 times. After each oul change within 2 weeks, not a month, I constantly have to add oil to the car. In the colder months, I have to wait at leasr 15min. before the car would even start. Would someone help me with these problems? I am [XXX]. I know recalls were placed on cars with similar problems. Plus smoke, I can't remember black or white comes out the tailpipe. The date you see, was the lasted date listed to add more oil. PLEASE HELP ME... INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I own a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. I leased it new, then purchased outright in May 2022. I had no issues with my vehicle. I maintained it regularly. Had appropriate interval oil changes. At no time from 4/2018 to 6/2025 did I have any knowledge of any issues with the engine in my vehicle & neither Hyundai nor the dealership contacted me in any manner to notify me of an issue with my engine. On or about October 2024, my check oil light came on for the first time in 6 years. I do not drive much because I work, & have worked, from home since July 2020. I took my car to my mechanic. He added almost 4 quarts of oil. I returned two weeks later & he changed oil. He saw nothing that caused him suspicion. He suggested I check my oil levels. Extreme oil consumption continued. My check oil light NEVER came back on. No other lights came on until 10/6/2025. I drove minimally. In July, 2025, I discovered my vehicle has a known defective engine. I uncovered multiple lawsuits against Hyundai regarding the defective engines. On 9/12/2025, I sent a Massachusetts General Law 93A Demand Letter mailed Certified Mail to Hyundai & dealership. On Oct. 6, 2025 at approx. 11:30 am, I turned on my car & without warning, my car immediately began shaking violently & vibrating & stalling - IN PARK. The check engine light began to flash intermittently in PARK. I drove my vehicle 7 miles to my mechanic (praying the whole time my car would not blow up with me in it); the car violently shook & vibrated the entire 7 miles. The check engine light changed to solid & acceleration was almost non existent. I am waiting for my mechanic to most likely give me bad news. Neither Hyundai nor the dealership have yet responded to my MGL 93A Demand Letter.

Over 3 years ago I went in for a normal oil change at Brookshire Hyindai Dealership where I was told my engine was consuming an alarming amount of oil. In order for Hyundai to do anything I was told o need to complete an engine oil consumption test which requires me to go back to the dealership every 1000 miles for 3k miles for them to check the oil. After completing this it was proven that there was a engine oil Consumption issue. They submitted it to Hyundai and I was denied. They said I needed to pay for an engine combustion cleaning which cost me about 400$, then I would have to repeat the test to see if the issue was resolved. After doing all of that, I still had an engine oil consumption problem according to the second test. Hyundai denied me again and told me I had to wait until my Engine light came on. So when it came on I brought it back, they said it wasn’t my engine according to the computer. I have spent thousands of dollars on oil over the past several years and Hyundai has done nothing. I do not feel safe in my vehicle. Hyundai has failed me. I then called Hyundai consumer care to open up a case and still nothing. All of that for them to tell me my extended warranty for my engine will not cover the issue. They have done nothing to resolve my issue only cost me time and money with no resolution. This is a known issue for my cars make and model and they are just turning their head the other way. Hyundai consumer care in fact does not care about consumers at all.

I have taken my car to the dealership now 3 times for the same recall issue. This time, they are telling me Hyundai will not repair my car on their end because of "sludge buildup" to which i was not aware. I submitted all records of maintenance and they are refusing to fix my vehicle. I now have an inoperable, because not safe, vehicle that is legally required to be fixed by Hyundai for it's recall, but is not being fixed. Recall 237 If I were to try to drive the vehicle, it could put lives at risk. It will not accelerate quickly, could go up in flames, and does not go the speed limit on highways which are required for me to get home and to work. The recall was confirmed by the dealer as the check engine light flashed and caused a certain code to pop up for maintenance. The solution would be for Hyundai to fix the car, but they are refusing and saying the whole engine needs to be replaced now even though there's nothing wrong with the engine.

Our vehicle was towed to a Hyundai Dealership on July 26, 2025 (VIN [XXX] ) 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe to see if the engine falls under Hyundai's TSB #22-EM-001H-1Engine Failure Campaign. This vehicle has now been at Chapman Hyundai in Scottsdale AZ for over 5 weeks. We have yet to receive confirmation from Hyundai that any testing was done to see if the rods failed, thus having the engine fall under the recall. What we have received was a statement that “The engineering department did some tests and said that they didn’t think it was a rod issue, that it was due to lubrication not getting to the engine. When I asked for that data to be sent to me so I could review it with our long-time mechanic and my mechanical engineers that I work with, I was told that would not be possible, I just had to “trust” what I was being told. However, as a show of “good faith” in their unwillingness to provide us data, Hyundai was willing to pay for half of an engine replacement, leaving us on the hook for over $3,000 to the dealership. While I told the Executive Correspondence Department that that offer was not satisfactory, I did tell him we would be willing to pay $1,000 towards the replacement if Hyundai absorbed the remainder since on the above offer, I was paying retail while Hyundai is absorbing costs at wholesale prices. Five weeks on, we still have not received any confirmation as to the real issue of the engine failure, and frankly I have a hard time believing that any manufacturer would be willing to come up with the offer proposed if they didn’t believe the issue was substantially theirs. The company’s lack of willingness to provide data for us to review is very concerning and makes me think that the issue would indeed fall under the recall. Burning oil, going through 1 quart every 250 miles. Paid over $1000 for last service. Replaced valves, gasket, fuel pump gasket, spark plugs, etc… Had us drive 1000 miles and bring back at which they said they would further help. Brought it back 950 miles later. It burned 3.5 qts of oil and now saying we need to pay $7000 for an engine. It only has 104k miles

While I was dropping on the highway my vehicle suddenly slowed down when and the engine started shaking when I approached around 40mph and the check engine light started flashing. After checking I’m getting the error codes P1326 and P0014. I’m not unable to go past 40mph and the vehicle starts stalling when I approach that speed which is incredibly dangerous depending on what road I’m on. I’ve had zero issues with this vehicle previously and have always had regular maintenance. After researching other Santa Fe sport have had identical issues and there are recalls for other years but my year 2018 was skipped for some reason even though it’s clearly affected.

Jun 24, 2025

In May while driving on the highway my car suddenly wouldnt accelerate and started jerking. It would go past 60-65 and the engine light was on. Took it to get repaired and they stated the whole engine needed to be replaced. Never once had an issue with my car until then. Of course we got the runaround went it came to the warranty. After repairs I notice my car does not run the same and that its slow to accelerate. Fast forward about a month later the starter goes bad in the car and now its completely unoperable.

In under 5,000 miles, my vehicle consumed over 5qt of oil. No indication of leaking. Took to an auto shop with ASE-certified technicians who verified that the vehicle is over-consuming oil. They explained that the rings around the pistons are no longer sealing properly, allowing combustion to escape. This explains the char marks on my dry dip-stick, which I checked immediately when my engine light turned on, which was my first indication of a problem. I had the vehicle checked out and oil changed immediately upon the engine light turning on. The light turned on as I was parking at the parking lot where I work. I added oil in order to make it to the auto shop, so as not to drive on zero oil. This is a risk of the engine failing while driving and potential to cause a fire.

May 29, 2025

Vehicle failed an oil consumption test. Dealership acknowledges that the vehicle burns 1.5 quarts per 1 thousand miles. The dealership initially told me that Hyundai would cover a combustion cleaning. However after acknowledging my mileage, they are now refusing to provide any assistance. This is a known issue and they are not acknowledging it. The dealership instructs me to drive until the problem progresses, but according to their data there is already a problem outside of the manufacturers specifications.

May 29, 2025

I was driving on the highway in April when my engine jolted and my car would not accelerate over 65mph. The engine light came on, and I was afraid that my car would seize and cause harm to myself and to other drivers. The flow of traffic was much higher, and I could not keep up with other vehicles. I feared that faster cars would crash into me or cause an accident trying to pass me. I pulled over ASAP and had to wait for roadside assistance. The dealer confirmed it was the knock code sensor p1326 that kicked in. I have maintained proper oil maintenance and have had a fuel induction service, prior to this event. An independent service center told me about the service recall on the engine, but the dealership will not acknowledge it nor my car's warranty.

May 27, 2025

The car stopped on a local road. The car was moved to a local mechanic shop, and the mechanic there diagnosed that the engine was locked up. It was towed to the dealership where the car was serviced last. If it had happened in on a highway, it would have caused very dangerous situation. There was no warning sign - no check engine light, no low engine oil light. Everything appeared to be working normally.

May 23, 2025

Followed all the steps for the theta II engine issue included replacing the knock sensor and spark plugs. The engine lost power when driving to Chicago and had to get the vehicle towed and now the dealer is saying that I have to pay for the engine replacement at my own expense in Hyundai is not covering.

The contact owns a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. The contact stated that while her husband was driving 50 MPH, the vehicle jerked and failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal. There was an abnormal sound coming from the engine compartment with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact's husband was able to pull over to the side of the road and ended up inside a ditch before the vehicle came to a stop. The contact stated that there was smoke coming from underneath the hood. The vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine had failed. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer, who confirmed that the engine had failed; and there was gasoline intrusion into the engine, causing engine failure. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that a manager would contact her. The vehicle remained at the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 99,501.

I’ve got a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with a Theta II engine that’s failing—burning oil way too fast, coolant mixing in the cylinders, and throwing a P0304 misfire code. It’s been undrivable since late April 2025, and I’m worried about safety because the misfire and engine failure risk could cause it to stall on the highway, putting me and others in danger. It shakes when I try to drive, which feels unsafe. A Hyundai dealer confirmed the issue, finding coolant in the cylinders and the misfire, with no visible oil leak. Oil change receipts show the oil disappearing over a few weeks. The manufacturer reviewed my case but denied the warranty claim, saying it’s not covered since I’m a second owner and it’s not a rod bearing issue, even though the 2021 Theta II settlement should apply to this. The seller didn’t disclose the engine’s defect history when I bought it in 2023. The check engine light came on in early April 2025 with the misfire code, and I noticed the oil issue then. It’ll be out of service over 30 days by mid May 2025, so I’m taking legal action.

Vehicle has an excessive oil intake and it is constantly blowing out the spark plugs and coil packs causing poor performance on the vehicle overall. My vehicle's VIN number was listed as a qualifier in a class action lawsuit, but the manufacturer says it is not making the noise it needs to make in order to have it checked. Was also informed I need to pull out my spark plugs and clean them regularly because of the oil buildup. This problem has caused other problems with the performance of the car the excessive oil intake has caused countless problems terrible performance of the vehicle and is attributing to other poor performance issues. This has been an ongoing problem and have only recently been told by the dealership of this instance. Even though my vehicle is one of the ones in the extended recall because it's not making the noise they like they won't do anything about it. This vehicle is still being financed and I am refusing to pay for anything until the matter is resolved. I have a case filed with the dealership I am speaking to an attorney Monday I am processing an email to my state's attorney of Missouri and have completed the better Business bureau complaints. After phone calls service dates and emails I feel that Hyundai is not doing anything to resolve this situation whatsoever and could use any assistance from you possible.

I purchased this car in December 2023. As 2024 happened, I had a routine maintenance check on the car. The oil was changed, all the fluids checked etc. It appeared fine. Within a year, I have to change the spark plugs twice and once again in 2025..That's isn't normal. The plugs were jet black. Oil is seeping out of the gas tank. Not natural. There is an OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE. My mechanic had typed notes on my receipt on what the problem(s) had been. Every other week, I am adding oil to my car. It isn't paid for. I would like a recall established on my car. I am [XXX] and need a reliable car. I went to one HYUNDAI dealership, provided the information my mechanic had written. Refused to give me the oil consumption test. I paid $200 or $238 for an oil change and a plug of some sort. I am aware that there was a class action lawsuit against HYUNDAI in 2022 for the same issue for my car. Money was paid to those whom had this issue ( I read). I have problems with my legs and back. I really need help. I need a recall on my car. Approximately, maybe a little less, every 5000 miles, my engine light comes on. I know a faulty spark plug shake. I can't afford to buy a new or replacement engine that work. I have never contacted NHTSA before I purchased this vehicle. I did call HYUNDAI main customer service line and was informed a recall had never been issued for this problem. Yet, numerous owners had and still have this issue along with the car hesitating at time to start. That is a problem with my as well. I am not sure of the exact date the first set of spark plugs were replaced. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The motor is gone in the vehicle. Oil light would blink and valves rattling right after having the oil changed. I have had the car checked by numerous mechanics and no oil leaks were found but oil levels would be low a week after the oil change. I ride around with oil in the car and have to make sure to check the oil before every trip even if it’s right around the block. I’ve had the car for a year in February and the motor went out a weeks ago. I have checked for engine recalls and have not found any but have found multiple forums of people having the same issue. Oil consumption issue with proof that my vehicle is burning more than a quart of oil every 1k miles and Hyundai refuses to support my claim.

Feb 11, 2025

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The Engine with the 2.0T had a valve train malfunction possibly related to a bearing or other issues. Hyundai dealership did not determine the root cause and is denying engine replacement under the rod bearing warranty. Also as a 2nd owner they won't reimburse for any repairs. This vehicle was well maintained. 2018 with 90K miles. The engine is last known to be at the dealership but probably not available. I was not offered to get a 2nd opinion and the technician notes are vague in my opinion. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? While traveling on the interstate at 65 MPH the vehicle began to make a knocking noise and had a loss of power. The steering and breaking system also became difficult to use. I was able to get off an exit after only crawling along at a unsafe low MPH for the interstate. The vehicle stalled and lost all power while on the off ramp. I was able to glide to a stop and was ready to use the emergency brake. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Hyundai's response is that it was in there opinion that the breakdown was not due to rod bearing failure however there is not a good diagnostics of a root cause. The failure was not due to poor maintenance. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Just the dealership. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lights. Sudden loss of power following by warning lights. Loss of power steering and brakes by the time the engine stalled.

The contact stated while driving at various speeds and while accelerating, or while the engine was idling, there was a knocking sound coming from the engine. The contact stated that the vehicle jumped, vibrated, and stalled while driving at various speeds or while reversing. The check engine warning light was illuminated. While the vehicle was idling at a stop light, the failure reoccurred; however, the vehicle was emitting a choking sound and shaking aggressively. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic who informed the contact that the third valve had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.

I bought my 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport from Toyota of Scranton as a certified pre-owned vehicle. I was told by the sales representative, Doug, that the car had been “checked and serviced, everything down to a full tank of gas”. In March, my oil light quickly flashed. When I checked it there was low oil, so I did an oil change. In June the oil light quickly flashed again. I informed Toyota of Scranton and they recommended an oil change and changing the drain plug. They reimbursed me after I did so because I had bought the car so recently so I “likely bought it that way”. However, the issues continued and I had it looked at by Kost Tire & Auto Service to rule out a leak. On November 6, 2024 I brought it to Toyota so they could diagnose the issue, as I am still in the mileage window for my warranty. I picked up November 8, 2024 to begin a 1,000 mile oil consumption test. I brought the car back November 27, 2024 and it was established that the car was “excessively burning oil”. -- The engine has failed. -- The dealer confirmed the issue. -- The warranty company says they do not consider this issue a "mechanical failure" and will not cover the damage. -- Toyota tore down the engine and the warranty company inspected it. The car is still sitting at Toyota torn down.

In May 2024, the vehicle's oil light came on while slightly turning the wheel or braking. When taken to a dealership, they stated that the car only had one quart of oil remaining, which was 4,000 miles after my last oil change and not due for another 1,000 miles. They stated there was excessive oil consumption and recommended the vehicle be taken to Hyundai dealer. I took the vehicle to Hyundai dealer in August 2024 because the car was making a rattling sound when accelerating from 0-40mph along with the car jerking between 30-40mph if accelerating except when only applying light pressure to the accelerator. Hyundai dealer stated there was no oil remaining in the vehicle, which was why the vehicle was shaking and rattling when accelerating. They began a claim process with Hyundai as the vehicle was under 100K warranty. After two consumption tests, it was deemed the vehicle was not consuming oil as previously thought. After the last consumption test in October 2024, the oil light began to come back on with me braking the vehicle. Hyundai dealer stated there was nothing further they could do to assist and stated I'd need to reach out to Hyundai customer care to file a report. I did this 10/18/24, and in December, Hyundai customer care told me to take the vehicle back to Hyundai dealer. Hyundai said at that time that now there was an oil leak from the oil pressure sensor, which allowed oil to pass through the entire main wiring of the engine until it reached the PCM. They said I need to replace the PCM, oil pressure switch, and engine control harness for $7,000, not covered by the warranty. Parts are also on backorder for over a year. My car's oil light continues to come on, and now the engine light is coming on while my car shakes when I reach 45mph or greater. It is deemed no longer safe to drive the vehicle, especially with my children in the car. When I checked the dipstick, it was completely out of oil, which was 1500 miles after they performed oil change.

Jan 10, 2025

In 2024, I initially suspected that my car was being improperly serviced at local Jiffy Lubes. Later, I thought it might be an oil leak, so I took it to the dealership. They informed me that there was an oil pan gasket leak and replaced it. However, when I returned the car a week later and said it wasn't fixed, they inspected it and claimed everything was fine. As months went by, I found myself consistently adding oil to the vehicle whenever the warning light came on. Whether I added 1 quart or 3 quarts at a time, the oil light would come on again about a week later, and I continued this cycle of adding oil. It was not until I found social media platforms/forums about a reoccurring problem with Hyundai vehicles burning oil. I have not talked to the dealership since so many people have stated in these forums that there is no solution because Hyundai denies there is a problem. I have 110k miles on the car and as long as there is no recall, I am forced to have the engine replaced at my cost. I am a retired, disabled veteran and cannot afford to have such expenses. There has to be a resolution to this problem with all of these peoples reports.

Jan 1, 2025

For the past 1.5 months my oil light has come on intermittently. This is odd because the vehicle has regular oil changes still not due for almost 2000 miles. 4 bottle of oil was added recently. Today the car stopped working while on the NJ turnpike when checked there was no oil in the engine.

Dec 26, 2024

2018 Hyundai Santefe 2.4L engine burned oil at a high rate and due to this caused 4k oil changes obsolete. The car need an oil change every 2k miles and still would have high build up. Hyundai claimed engine failure was due to gaps in the oil changes them being done around 4.5k miles in the start. Many people have had engine failures with these car and they are still selling them with the defective engine to this date and not warning the buyers about the problems with these cars and are forcing the second hand buyers to pay $6-12k outta pocket to repair these cars after a year of owning them. I think Hyundai should be held accountable for these actions after they know these engines are defective and they still have them on their car lots for someone to stroll in and buy a $17k car with previous owners that will fail within the next year of ownership. Attached is maintence record for the vehicle.

Driving on highway, when accelerator failed to maintain, the car started to jerk. After blocking traffic behind me, I was able to pull car over on the side of the busy highway, with smoke coming from hood. This was well after dark, and it was towed to a local and dependable mechanic. He had told me the engine was cracked. I am in the process of finding out if I am eligible for the extended warranty, for I meet all requirements

Dec 19, 2024

I was on the highway and pressed the gas and the car started shaking. Wouldn’t go up in speed so I pulled off the highway and parked it. Checked the oil and it was almost empty even though I had an oil change about a month ago. Service center says it need a whole new engine at 108k miles. How is this possible? They say there were pieces of the valve in the fourth cylinder which also had lots of oil in it. I bought this car used and am only the second owner. Surely there is something Hyundai can do if they know about this issue.

Dec 12, 2024

The component that is malfunctioning is my engine. I took it into the dealership and they said I had cylinder scoring on my engine from excessive oil consumption. My safety was put as risk as my car threw itself into limp mode in the middle of the high way while going over 70 mph. I had to immediately pull over on the side of the highway and somehow get it back home while not being able to accelerate fully. My car is not drivable in this mode as it is unsafe. This issue has been confirmed by a dear shop although they refuse to replace the engine unless I pay for it out of pocket which is not possible. The vehicle component was inspected at the dealership. There was no prior warning to the engine issues. If there had been oil consumption issues before I had just recently bought the vehicle and there was no way of me knowing.

Q1. The car is shaking and making rumbling noises upon driving and a check engine light is turned on. It seem like the car will abruptly stop and may result in a crash on a highway. Inspection by multiple mechanics indicate that the engine is misfiring and there seems to be an engine oil leakage issue, imbalance of engine or some part of it. The engine configuration is the same as with the engine recalls (under recall number-17V226000) made on 2013 and 2014 models of Hyundai Santa Fe sport which is GDI, 2.4 Liter and was also manufactured in the USA. Yes, the car is available to inspect on request. Q2. The car was shaking and rumbling while driving even at 40mph. We had to pull up to the side because it felt risky and then had to drive slowly to reach home. It was scary and felt life-threatening with a risk of crashing due to abrupt halting of the car. Q3. Yes inspected by the manufacturer- Hyundai. Q4. The check engine light has been coming on and off for over 10 months period. The car has been inspected and checked by multiple mechanics including 2 times visit to the Hyundai service center. They first appeared in Oct 2023 and is an ongoing issue every other month costing me ~$1000. I have been filling up with 4 quarter of engine oil after driving ~200 miles since it was suspected to be an engine oil leakage issue. However, nothing has been resolved and this issue fits the description and problems seen the Hyundai 2013 and 2014 Santa Fe sports- which have been recalled (under recall number-17V226000).

Aug 27, 2024

The oil light has appeared to light up in the car while I am driving it. The first time was January 2023. I pulled over and checked my oil and had literally no oil in my car. I immediately went to Auto Zone (or Advance/O'Reilly's-I'll check my receipts) and poured 5 quarts of oil in the car and called Hyundai (this was within the timeframe of oil changes). They had me bring my car in and stated they needed to change oil and do an oil consumption test, so I had to drive 1,000 miles, bring my car back in and repeat. In the end, they said nothing was wrong with my car. In early August, this year, the same thing happened and I am having to go through this again.

I got my oil changed 98,161 March 1 2024 at mechanic shop Mechanic shop checked oil March 29 2024 at 98,867 a total of 706 miles driven since last oil change. They added 2.5 quarts of oil. So i did my own research online found out the Hyundai 2018 Santa Fe Sport Turbo 2.5 Theta engines has excessive oil consumption problems that will cause Engine to seize/lock up, catch on fire, and other mechanical problems. I have an extended warranty TXXI and TXXC. Oil consumption leaks into the pistons and rod bearings and will cause a knocking in the engine. The oil is already in spark plugs and pcv valve which i replaced. But it will continue to keep happen over and over. I don't want my engine to catch on fire with me in it or at all that's why i am proactive in getting this solved now its already a problem. I contacted Wilson Hyundai dealership they did an 2 month oil consumption test Oil change i had to drive it for 1000 miles It failed. Then they did combuster chamber cleaning i had to drive it for another 1000 miles it failed again. So they submitted claim to corporate that i needed an engine. Corporate declined saying i was over my miles they had the wrong mileage it was a way just to deny me but dealership had correct miles so they could not follow through with that lie. So Corporate made Dealership send another claim in this time corporate denied it saying i was over my warranty. No i was not i started this at 98, 867 miles When 2.5quarts had to be added. I also had to wait a week to get into Wilson dealership because they were backed up in appointments i was at 100,212 miles and so where other Hyundia dealerships others were 1-2 months out in appointments. I had to be in a rental car for 2 months had to pay for it and still pay car note paid for oil testing which i was told i would be reimbursed for repairs and car rentals but they did not honor it nor did they pay goodwill pay for all of my inconvenience 2 month long testing and it failed and they still denied/ lied

I am writing to formally file a complaint regarding the significant oil consumption issue with my 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. My vehicle was part of a class action lawsuit settlement that provided extended warranties and reimbursement for repairs related to oil consumption defects. I first reported the oil consumption issue in 2022, while my vehicle was still within the warranty period. Despite my multiple attempts over the past two years to have an oil consumption test conducted, Hyundai dealerships only agreed to perform the test in January 2024. The test confirmed that my vehicle has an oil consumption issue. However, Hyundai has refused to cover the necessary repairs, claiming that my vehicle is now past 100,000 miles and out of warranty. This refusal is unfair, as the issue was acknowledged within the warranty period, and the delays in testing were beyond my control. I must consistently add oil to my vehicle several times a month and get oil changes before the recommended timeframe to ensure the vehicle runs smoothly without damage.

There has been an ongoing issue with oil consumption and engine failure with my car. The engine didnt give any indication of running hot on the dashboard. It just shut off while driving. I've been to the dealer a few times with no help. On 8/4/2024 my car cut off in the middle of traffic with my daughter in the car twice. It took 3 hours to cool off in 90 + degrees heat. Oil wasn't in the spark plugs but they keep getting shorted out. Oil burns and the engine stalls. I have to replace it which I did but my car shut down. We could've been in a bad accident because it wouldn't drive off immediately. We were stranded on a 2 way country road. This is all horrible because again, we could've been involved in a bad accident on the road we were on. After 5 1/2 hours it finally started and 2 people had to trail me home.

This car is burning excessive amounts of oil. I care for it diligently with regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance. Earlier this summer, Capital Tire and Service confirmed that the engine light was on due to a knock sensor likely caused by low oil. At their advisement I ran a consumption test; 800 miles later the engine was nearly empty of with another engine light signal. This light went off after adding 5 quarts of oil. I am routinely adding extra oil, hoping the engine does not seize, and waiting to see if Hyundai will issue a recall. This vehicle is not safe to drive.

Jul 30, 2024

Every time I get an oil change my oil is low. Have started checking my oil after the oil change, a week or so later and oil is low. I will check it the following day after the oil change and the oil level is fine but then the oil level drops as weeks go by. There are no warning lights that come on, especially the one time I was very low. I’ve been told by the mechanics that this is a common problem with Hyundai. Most recently I had an oil change done 7/15/24. I drove 600 miles so far and the oil is at least half a quart low

Jul 10, 2024

I was told by my mechanic that there was a service memo put out by Hyundai about the possibility of the engine in my vehicle consuming too much oil and they offered a fix. I did everything required. Oil change, oil consumption test etc. My engine is burning 3.3 quarts every 600 miles or so. Hyundai DENIED my claim to have them replace the engine even though it was an issue that they previously acknowledged and other people have had their engine fixed or replaced by Hyundai.

Jul 3, 2024

Oil consumption issue. At anytime the engine could fail and shut off making for unsafe driving and causing an accident. In progress, have done one consumption problem test and about to do a second. Oil light went on after an oil change and had that inspected at local garage. After that oil change within a week or so took back to garage and oil was down again after 735 miles and took it to the Hyundai dealer in Meriden CT after waiting 3 weeks for an appointment. They won't commit to saying it is a problem until they do more costly tests but it is evident it is the same problem my daughter had with jeep until they finally did a recall. Problem began in Feb but I went away and continued with issue when I got back at beginning of May. Have seen the same complaints on the internet and lawsuits etc.

Have 80,000 miles on vehicle , driving down highway , and total engine failure occurred. Luckily there was a highway shoulder I was able to roll onto for safety. No oil light had come on, but mechanic said there was an internal oil leak, and that I had no oil , and engine was blown. There are many known engine failures due to excessive oil consumption in the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport models. They need to offer a recall on this model and replace the engines of thismodel.

For the last year or so, we have had a major issue with oil consumption, there are no oil spots on our driveway yet the oil just disappears and we are constantly having to add more. I have spoken with Hollar Hyundai about the issue and they acknowledged there is a problem and that the SUV now has a lifetime warranty for the engine. We have all records of oil changes and my wife is very religious about getting it done as scheduled. We asked about what we are to do and all they said was drive the vehicle until the engine siezes up and then Hyundai will replace the engine. I asked about doing the test on the engine nd they will not do a test on the engine for us. We are at our whits end with this engine using so much oil and we need to have soeone from Hyundai Motor America contact us and help us resolve this issue. My wife loves our SUV and it is the first one she has ever paid cash for due to inheriting some money and now she is faced with the possibility of having to trade it in on another vehicle and thus coming out of pocket or even aking car payments again. PLEASE HELP US WITH THIS KNOWN ISSUE!!!!!

While driving my 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport in freeway traffic, I felt the vehicle begin to heavily vibrate and the engine was jerking severely. The speed began to slowly descend. I was unable to control this. I was in a one-lane overpass, with no safe place, room, or lane to pull over. I felt hopeless and fearful for my life. I was literally drifting, praying the vehicle would be able to handle the descent upward. As the speed declined, the vibrations became more pronounced. No dash lights were illuminated. Other drivers behind me were approaching rapidly at the speed limit and slamming on their brakes and hazard lights in an attempt to notify drivers further back. I managed to maneuver over to approximately 24 inches of a faux shoulder on the right of [XXX] . Cars hurled past mine within inches of my vehicle. I knew I needed to get out of the car and crawled over to the passenger side. Again, I was trapped. Several HPD units were dispatched to literally shut down the freeway to enable a tow truck driver to safely hook up my SUV. I had it towed to my mechanic and he did a diagnostic indicating a compression issue. He ordered new spark plus and 4 new coils. Upon further investigation he discovered that Cylinder 4 was not holding compression and he informed me that the engine had failed. I then had it towed to the local Hyundai dealer. At check in, I was informed that there would be a $700 diagnostic/tear apart fee to discover what repairs were needed. I informed them exactly what was needed and I expected a new engine. The Hyundai mechanic dismantled the engine and took pictures, ran a few tests. He submitted the results to Hyundai for approval. The engineer at Hyundai denied a new engine claiming "the head coil is not part of the recall". I was told for $2500, Hyundai would "refab" my damaged head to control the leaks. If that repair didn't address the issue, I was sure to get a new engine. A financial and physical risk. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6

I just got Hyundai SUV last December and already cause problem with engine and abs, after I found out that it is recalled a while ago. First ABS, I was going to fix that but all attention to me is engine light then found out it is High pressure fuel pump then burning oil that I smelled something isn't right. I feel it's not safe to drive and I spoke to mechanic, He told me take it back to dealership that they gave me a lemon Hyundai.. I talked to the dealership mechanic shop and never tell me anything how much for high pressure fuel pump? SO I already saw my SUV problem and I decided to check website for Hyundai recalled, that what I had right now.. It's only 6 years old and only 90,000 mileages on that SUV. That smell is very odd and it will cause engine fire..

Hydndai will not fix my engine until it catches on fire and or seize- There was a lawsuit and as per the settlement - the warranty is extended for the engine but the claim form and service agent said in order for the engine to be approved for replacement I would have to wait for it to seize or catch on fire. As a mother who drives with her children I find this unsafe for them or to others as this can cause an accident and or it can be fatal. They still have these recalled vehicles in there lots and our scamming people!!

- I experienced an engine failure while driving. - I was in traffic the auto lost power and I had to immediately pull over. The immediate loss of power caused traffic to break. Fortunately, there was no incident but it could've been dangerous in a more congested area. - I had the vehicle towed to a dealership. - The dealership has looked at it. They submitted a report to the manufacturer over a month ago. - I saw the engine light flash and heard clattering coming from the engine compartment.

Oil pan has a crack. On 03/15/2024 while receiving maintenance on car service personnel notified me that I had a crack in my oil pan and that it would have to be replaced. I have seen no signs of a leak in my driveway. Said they will replace for $395. Seems to be a common problem with Hyundai cars. Looks like a problem with the manufacturing of the oil pan.

During a dealer-suggested "oil consumption test" and driving down the interstate with cruise control on, SUV suddenly started experiencing reduced power and emitting a burning smell with no apparent warning lamps or messages. Exited the highway immediately and came to a stop on the side of the road and engine quit before even being able to put it in Park. Engine is 2.4L in-line GDI Theta II. Hoping to tow it to the dealer by week's end to have them pay for a replacement engine and get reimbursement.

Before engine died was burning much oil even after oil changes and borught in for recalls to dealer 2 mo before. Excessive burning of ooil wa a know issue at that time July 2023. Now Hyundai dealer saying the issue is a customer issue due to carbon build up on a valve. High burnin rate of oil is responsible for the carbon build up on the valve causing the engine to fail. Not a cusotmer problem but a engine design issue.

The check engine light came on. The vehicle attempts to stall when changing gears after a stop or deceleration and the engine shutters at speeds 65mph or greater. I am afraid the vehicle will stall if a fast acceleration is required such as moving onto a highway. A diagnostic was performed to confirm the engine is causing the "Check Engine Light or Service Engine Soon Light."

Dec 29, 2023

This is a certified preowned vehicle. I am the second owner. I do my own maintenance. Currently this engine/vehicle has 64553 miles, I noticed it starting to use oil around the high 40k mile mark. There are no oil leaks. I have to add oil multiple times between oil changes and I just read that some of these can lock up and completely stop. I suspect this would be caused by people not checking their oil regularly however I am concerned that is the oil consumption is bad enough that this can happen at any time while driving so I wanted to add my complaint to any other existing complaints.

Dec 19, 2023

HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION: To the documented tune of 40 quarts consumed April17 - December 15, 2023, encompassing 24,116 driven miles. Hyundai America and this dealer knows all about this issue and is stalling on the remedy because it requires total engine replacement. Presently I am experiencing a P1326 engine knock sensor fault and I'm told by my mechanic a prospective catalytic converter failure due to high oil consumption. Experiencing loss of power and NO acceleration merging onto highway.

After buying my 2018 hyundai Santa Fe Sport this past June, I have been told the car has an oil consumption problem and is burning off oil quickly. For example, I have to add a quart of oil every 500 miles. The car has 98000 miles on it. No warranty with car dealer was established at time of sale

Engine consuming excessive oil which puts it and me at risk of catastrophic engine failure or fire either of which could cause an accident, injury or death to myself; other passengers and individuals nearby. This issue has been going on since shortly after purchase and Hyundai says it is a maintenance item and not a warranty or recall. I first informed them in July of 2021. I have since found out this has been a known issue and there was a class action suit in Ca. And numerous complaints to NHSTA. I had no warning lights or messages and then the engine threw a rod and my car just died on the side of the road. It had apparently been burning oil. I get it back after 2 months and it needs a battery. Now the check engine light is on and it has affected the catalytic converter.

Oct 28, 2023

Engine is consuming 2 qts of oil every 1000 miles. Just had spark plugs replaced as the plugs fouled out due to oil leaking into cylinder. Dealership says the engine must blow for them to approve a new engine under warranty. This is a family vehicle with young children. If the engine fails, the vehicle will lose power brakes ans steering .

Oct 16, 2023

I have been conducting regular maintenance on my vehicle, getting oil changes, on average around every 6,000 miles. I have had the car since August 2021 and have had no accidents and haven't missed an oil change. My car is a little over 100K miles and the oil light began to come on close to 90k miles. The car is also leaking oil and all the service agent could tell me is that the are burns oil at an accelerated rate. Even though the oil light was on, NONE of the service agents mentioned any issues with the oil and nothing was mentioned when I purchased the car. I still have yet to receive the report from my last oil change from 10/06/2023. Also, the ABS light came on after I got the car serviced for a recall for the brakes and potential electrical fire while the car is parked. Each time I checked for a recall, nothing was found, even though this car clearly has an issue with oil consumption, well the engine in general.

major engine oil leak caused by defective drain plug receptacle. replaced washer and plug twice. still leaks. could cause engine failure.

Sep 16, 2023

Oil leaking from drain plug, Threads in the oil pan look okay after being verified by my mechanic, had the drain plug replaced three times and the issue persists.

Aug 11, 2023

In May, my vehicle began having issues with acceleration and was choking when going uphill, or would start choking when slowing to turn or start moving after being stopped. The engine light came on and had code P1326. Dealership did a system update and it went away. The car broke down not long after, wouldn't start. Replaced battery as it wouldn't charge and was drained. Still didn't work. Towed it to dealership. After several days, they said it might be the crankshaft position sensor. A local mechanic replaced it, it did not fix it. Spark plugs were completely burnt up and covered in gas. Changed spark plugs and it seemed fixed, until it broke down last week. Has code P0420 now. Checked oil, it has absolutely no oil in it and it has only been about 3000 miles since my last oil change. It is due for an oil change, but should not be completely out of oil. Burning oil can clog cat converter, causing P0420 code. My vehicle has a theta engine, which was involved in a lawsuit and settlement, which I only learned about yesterday, and have missed the deadline to file a claim. The vehicle has lost acceleration and died while driving, posing a risk to myself and other drivers. Vehicle is unreliable and unsafe. Dealership failed to tell me anything about my spark plugs, and did not mention my vehicle having oil issues. Non-dealership mechanics have been the ones to bring the issues to my attention. Corporate Hyundai will also not help.

The contact then notified the dealer and confirmed that the VIN was included the NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V810000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) and scheduled an appointment. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed to the dealer, she noticed smoke coming from under the hood of the vehicle. The contact then heard a loud explosion coming from under the hood and abruptly depressed the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to pull off the roadway. The contact became aware of a trail of oil on the ground. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with an internal combustion failure and the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was deemed a total loss by the dealer, but the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the VIN was previously included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V810000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) and Service Campaign 953: ECM & Cluster Update. The contact was provided a case number and advised to call the NHTSA Hotline. The approximate failure mileage was 87,000.

Bought a used 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport in December of 2022, as a second owner from a third party car dealer. No extended warranty was purchased. The vehicle currently has 122,750 miles. At the second oil change service done at Valvoline they told us it was not showing it had oil at the dipstick. I have driven it 337 miles thus far and it is already showing at the low mark. There is a recent settled law suit regarding excessive oil consumption. Some articles regarding the law suit listed 2010-2012 and 2015-2021 Hyundai Santa Fe as being affected, but the settlement only lists 2010-2012, as such the VIN recall search brings nothing. This vehicle is excessively consuming oil and I suspect the engine will seize in the near future.

I was driving 55 miles an hour down a major highway all of the sudden my vehicle jumps and lost all power. I did managed to make it onto the side of the road. I turned off the vehicle and turned it back on it was making a crazy noise. It is now not drivable due to the engine failure.

My engine is burning about 3-4 quarts of oil between oil changes.

Jun 14, 2023

Engine is consuming at least 1quart of oil every 750-1000 miles with no oil leaks.

Jun 13, 2023

ENGINE IS CONSUMING 1 QUART OF OIL EVERY 1000 MILES. I ADD 1/2 QUART EVERY 500 MILES IN ORDER TO BE SAFE. IF THIS VEHICLE IS DRIVEN BY SOMEONE OTHER THAN A PERSON LIKE ME WHO CHECKS THE OIL LEVEL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES THE ENGINE WOULD FAIL DUE TO LACK OF OIL. THE DEALER WANTS $150 TO CONDUCT AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST! SEVERAL DEALERS TELL ME THAT THIS CONDITION IS OK, REALLY?

Jun 6, 2023

Oil consumption is SUPER high. Not even 1 month after oil change have to add 2 quarts of oil. Have replaced gaskets in the engine but the head gaskets are also needing replaced when car not even that old. No oil leaking to be seen from engine. Oil consumption causing failures of other parts costing more in repairs.

April 17th 2023 my cars decelerate, wouldn't accelerate above 60 mph and would randomly decelerate as low as 15mph. The check engine lightvwas constantly flashing and the rmp wouldn't go above 2. I called motorworld and Hyundai. Motorworld said I needed a knock sensor replacement. They replaced the knock sensor. I called Hyundai again to see if I could be reimbursed. They said no. Hyundai then told me that because I paid to replaced the knock sensor my engine was now covered for life. A I ri 14th 2023 the exact same thing happened to my car again. I had it towed to motorworld. A week later I was told that they recommended an $800 oil consumption test because they said the oil was very low. I told them that my oil light never came on. The car was failing. I told the that I just had an oil change and that I thought the prior mechanic cheated me out of oil because my oil light came on 2 weeks after getting an oil change. This whole week I've been going back and forth with Hyundai re: this problem with is noted on websites. I was told that there is nothing they can do. I asked them to replace the motor. This is an engine problem and the engine is covered under power transmission and because I paid to replace the knock sensor. However it is not the knock sensor. The car did what it was supposed to do if tge engine is in danger of failing. So why did the charge me $583 for the knock sensor replacement and now they want me to pay $800 for an oil consumption test. It's obvious that the vehicle is consumption oil. There are no oil leaks. I spoke with Hyundai again yesterday. I told her that Hyundai needs to replace the engine and I feel that they stalling and putting me in danger. If this happens again I'm in danger, especially on the highway. Motorworld called to confirm that I was told on several occasions that because I paid for a knock sensor my engine is under warranty for life. Motorworld tod her that it's not. This occurred in April and again 5/14/23

Oil and filter was changed the 1st or 2nd week of March. (Mobil 1 full syn. 5W-20, with a Hyundai filter) A. Oil black, which was typical for the car (approx 1 qt low, topped off multiple times in the approx. 5000 mi since the last oil filter change) Note: On 12/21/22 Rowe Hyundai of Westbrook, ME, performed the ABS Recall, and we had the 2nd Carbon BG fuel injection flush performed. They noted oil was low and appeared dirty. Oil topped off that same day. I also asked the service manager why the engine burned/ leaked so much oil, and was suggested to try the Hyundai oil filter, in which I bought two. Because of the continued leakage of oil around the oil drain cover plate, I asked for a new oil plug washer and was told there was one taped to each one of the oil filter boxes. The first Hyundai filter and washer was installed the first of March 2023. All prior oil / filter changes the oil plug was never loose. I, [XXX] dad, [XXX] have been changing my oil and filters on all my cars for the last 10+ years (not to include when I was younger) est. >60 changes, and never have I had a loose oil plug. new Hyundai filter and drain plug washer were used. Installation was performed to manufacturer’s spec. B. 5/13/23 added 24 oz. of Mobil 1 full syn. (had approx. 1000 miles since above oil change, this was the typical oil burn) C. 5/17/23 [XXX] left for Baltimore, and 2 hrs into trip (on rt. 15 Merrit Pkwy) noticed the red oil light come on, stopped the car and shut the engine off. Called tow truck, found Hyundai dealer with a good reputation. Police stopped and pushed her to a safer location. Car towed to Balice Hyundai of Fairfield. Engine is burning 1-2 quarts of oil per 1000 miles. Car was purchased new and this problem began at the 86,000-87000 milage. Mark. Problem confirmed by my mechanic and a dealership mechanic. Car has been regularly serviced by my independent service center. Regular inspections have been conducted in order to renew tags. Oil lamp warning and emmission light warning came on at the onstart of this just as oil change was due. Car was found to be very low on oil, with no leaks being found. Within days, oil light came on again and emmissions. Have had oil consumption test run at dealership and waiting to see if Hyundai is going to honor warranty. Meanwhile, dealership is trying to convince me to trade in my car for a new car.

Car uses an excessive amount of oil. Have to add more than a quart every 1000 miles

Apr 26, 2023

Driving my 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport and began hearing occasional rattling noises in engine. Engine light came on - so I made an appointment to take car to API Repair Shop. Next day engine light began to blink and car stalled and started up only to stall again, before starting up. Drove home and parked car. Had it towed to API for diagnostic test. They determined there was a problem in the oil line. They dropped the oil pan to fine pieces of metal. They stopped working on the car immediately and looked up reports to find there was a Hyundai recall for engine problems. (same as described above only some engines caught fire). API had car towed to Jones Hyundai in Bel Air. Jones Hyundai refused to honor the warranty or fix the recall saying another repair shop 'tampered with the engine'. API says they only dropped the oil pan in an effort to diagnose the problem. API made me aware of the recall which I was never notified by Hyundai. API said it has to be a certified Hyundai dealer to fix recalls - which is why we towed it to the nearest dealer, yet Jones Hyundai in Bel Air is refusing to fix the problem. They said they will not touch the car. How can they refuse to fix a recall - under the law aren't they obligated to replace the defective part?

I have encountered 2 issues that can lead to engine failure: 1- Crack in the Oil Pan, 2- High oil consumption leading to engine failure. 1 - I took my vehicle in for the 5,000 mile oil change Jan 11, 2023. I also told them that my engine was idling rough when I was sitting still. After an hour wait, I was told the oil level was very low and the technician had found a crack in the oil pan near the oil drain plug. I was showed the crack in the pan and allowed to take pictures. They had a pan in stock and replaced the pan. My odometer reading for the service was 87,476. 2 - On March 25, 2023 I checked my oil level and the dip stick showed I was 2 quarts low. The odometer reading at that time was 90,826. I added 2 qts of oil. In retrospect my engine had starting idling rough about 2 weeks before I had to add the 2 qts of oil. The engine ran smoother after the oil was added. I have pictures of the odometer reading and the dip stick. I went into the dealership on March 27, 2023 and told service advisor about the problem. They couldn't get me in until Mon. April 3, 2023. Odometer was reading 91,146. The 90,000 mile service was done and I was told my engine was consuming a lot of oil. I am now in the process of getting Hyundai to approve an Oil Usage Test. If it fails, the dealership told me Hyundai would replace the engine.

The acceleration of the vehicle from a stop. Whether from a stop sign, stop light, even sometimes after slowing down after a turn. It hesitates while the gas pedal is still being applied. Causing the vehicle to slow and other vehicles are forced to brake. The engine does not rev and the tachometer does not move. There are no warnings lights or vehicle notifications. After several attempts to bring it to the dealership, they are never able to replicate the issue. The OBD scans show no issues. It has never been a constant problem, however it remains as a "hit or miss" issue. Could be days of no problems and then popping back up every stop.

Within the last few weeks my 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport SUV has been experiencing few noticeable issues. 1st my vehicle doesn’t want to start when I turn the key, I have to open the door close it then try again and it will turn over to start. 2nd recently driving on the highway my vehicle slowed all the way down and started jerking like it wanted to cut off. I would push my accelerator down as far as possible and it will still go slow and not speed up.3rd my vehicle is making a throttle/knocking noise and a blinking check engine light is on as well.

Mar 15, 2023

I noticed at roughly about 120,000 miles the vehicle started slowly consuming oil. Vehicle now consumes excessively at 1 quart of oil about every 800 to 1000 miles. Oil level needs to be checked daily for fear of further damage. I recently changed the oil on 3/12/23 and checked oil on 3/15/23 and vehicle was a half quart low.

Oil leaking

Jan 12, 2023

We have always had our 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0T serviced at our local Hyundai dealership in St. Cloud MN. All required maintenance has been done. Our vehicle has 68400 miles on it. We left MN for our winter home in Apache Junction Az after Christmas. We experienced loss of power and the check engine light came on. We were in the higher elevations of AZ and experienced blizzard conditions during this loss of power we barely made it to our destination due to this lack of power. Our vehicle is at a Hyundai dealership in Apache Junction AZ for 9 days counting with no back up vehicle. The dealership called us and said our vehicle has experienced engine failure. Now waiting on Hyundai. Very disappointed!!!

Dec 12, 2022

My 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe has a blown engine and will cost over $9000 to replace. Unfortunately my car is out of warranty at 120,000 miles. It has become known to me that this particular car, and thousands of others, has known problems with the engines. So much so, that a software update for a sensor was available in 2017, oil consumption issues and civil law suits have been highly publicized. I was never notified of the software update, which would have extended my warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles. I was diligent in oil change and maintenence on my car yet of no fault of my own the engine needs replaced. I believe Hyundai has been aware of these defects and did nothing to rectify the company-wide problem, just hoping many cars would fall out of warranty first. I have been told that since I am not the original owner and the car is out of warranty it would cost over $9000 to replace the engine ( the Kelly Blue value on my car should be $8000- $9000). Additionally, recall campaign #953 would have likely recognized the engine issues, but I was never contacted by Hyundai regarding the recall, and just found out about it when my car was in for service.

Middle of traffic was not safe and the safety of others was effected because my car was unable to move, it was a high risk dangerous situation. Problem was reported to mechanic as well as insurance company (geico) car was pushed by strangers into a nearby parking lot, which then I waited for a towing truck. The car was inspected by a mechanic who then told me to have it inspected by Hyundai and Hyundai has told me due to lack of maintenance my car stopped working and there is nothing they can do. I am insulted by the lack of concern Hyundai has had for what they have put me and my livelihood through. I am aware of the recall on these vehicles. Engine :2.4L I4 DGI DOHC 16V. The Engine light came on I had it diagnosed immediately…I was told my cam shaft and knock sensors needed replacement, they were replaced. On my way to work on 9/15/2022 @ 7:15am my car went from doing 70 to 55 just like that. A picture of the engine light and oil light came on, before this I had no lights or warnings of any kind. My car stalling was not safe for me or others on a 3 lane highway, I heard knocking noise and ALL of my oil was on the ground. I waited 2.5 hours on the side of the road for towing service. My car was sold to me by Art Moran car dealership in September 2021 with no mention of it being RECALLED. I had to be towed to LaFontaine Toyota Hyundai Kia Suzuki Scion dealership in Dearborn Mi., on 9/15/2022. Neither dealership has informed me yet of a recall on the car to this date. Hyundai customer care told me on 11/4/2022 that my 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport was recalled. LaFontaine of Dearborn claimed to have put in a new engine and now wants me to pay $330 because I don't have proof of the past maintenance since 5000 miles, way before I took ownership, and it needs over $1000.00 of more important repairs. The vehicle has an oil consumption issue which requires 2-3 quarts of oil to be added between regular oil changes as the vehicle is burning oil quickly. The vehicle is available for inspection if requested. This poses serious safety risks due to potential vehicle failure or other event, such as fire. There is a defect with the vehicle that causes the oil filters to get clogged with debris that they can no longer filter out contaminants and maintain proper oil pressure leading to engine failure. Additionally, the oil indicator does not light or alert that the vehicle needs oil. The problem has been confirmed by the dealer and an independent service center. The vehicle has been looked at by the dealers service department. There were/are no warning signs and the issue first occurred in June 2022 and is ongoing.

2018 Santa Fe Sport had been leaking a few little oil spots in my garage . First noticed the problem at about 80k miles. Took it for an oil change and the technician told us he had a lot of complaints on this model vehicle. Fast forward a few months at our next oill change (3 thousand miles later) and the technician told us we were almost completely out of oil. We took the vehicle to the Hyundai dealership and we were told there was nothing wrong, no oil leaks detected. We were then having to bring the vehicle in to the oil change place in between regularly scheduled oil changes and top off the oil (sometimes taking 3-4 quarts in between oil changes). Coming home from the ballpark a few weeks ago we exited the freeway and the vehicle started shaking and losing power and the check engine light came on. I coasted in to the gas station and checked the oil and the dipstick was bone dry (except for the oil that looked like it had burned to the dipstick). I bought / put in 2 quarts of oil and limped the vehicle home. Took the vehicle to the local Hyundai dealership and now we are being told we need a new 10k dollar engine and now that the vehicle has almost 120k miles it is no longer under warranty. Everyone I have talked to about the issue says this is a common thing for this make / model and that the engines need to be replaced. How is there not a recap for this? Any advise / assistance would be appreciated

Excessive oil consumption. Engine has no leak and in between oil changes having to put in 4-6 quarts of extra oil.

Heavy oil consumption. Burning oil. Constant oil replacement needed. Airbag light stays on. Passenger air bag turns off when person is sitting in seat.

Car seized up on my way home from work. Was towed to dealership where it sat for two weeks. Dealership says I need a new engine. The engine I have has not been recalled! I am only able to get my car fixed because of warranty. This is 3rd time I have had this problem and I have only had my car a year. Bought it with 50k miles on it.

I own a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. In November, 2021 I began noticing the vehicle using an abnormal amount of oil between oil changes. Fast forward to April, 2022, I was instructed by the Hyundai dealership to bring it in for an oil consumption study. After the first 1,000 mile interval, I was told to submit my service records. I submitted as requested. I was then told Hyundai was requiring the service department to remove my valve cover and take pictures of valve train to submit. I left the vehicle for required work. I picked up the vehicle after close of business hours and made it less than a mile from the dealership when the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle would barely run. The vehicle was towed back to the dealership. A diagnostic test was conducted where I was told the high pressure fuel pump was bad. I was charged $1150 for repairs and “assured” it was nothing the dealership did. After researching myself and speaking to other Hyundai service departments, I learned the high pressure fuel pump needed removal to pull the valve cover. The dealership has yet to take responsibility or refund my money.

Oil light does not come on despite being completely empty of oil. After oil changes the oil is burned and empty at 500-600 miles. Hyundai dealership did a consumption test and said yes their is a problem but won’t fix under warranty. They also stated it is a defective known engine problem but Hyundai won’t fix.

My vehicle is burning oil excessively. I have measured this precisely. I have had to add oil five times since July 25, 2021 and it is not February 5, 2022. Each time the consumption got worse. The consumption as been 2076, 1732, 1271, 1120, and 1000 miles per quart. I am afraid that my engine will eventually fail while I am driving possibly stopping the vehicle in the middle of the freeway, creating a hazard for myself and others. This could result in a serious accident. I have found on the internet that many other persons are experiencing the same exact issue. Please force Hyundai to recall the engines that are failing and replace them with engines that do not fail. Since July the vehicle has been driven 6286 miles and currently has only 49990 miles.

Purchased a new car from Plaza Hyundai dealership in Brooklyn NY 5/25/2019, had problems a year later but due to covid, dealership wasn't open. Called Hyundai Consumer affairs May 2020 as I also found out there was an open recall that was supposed to be done with the ecm & cluster update-engine monitoring logic product improvement for Santa Fes from 2011-2019. There was and still is an open recall listed from 08/09/2018 that the car was still at Plaza Hyundai dealership for. In 2020, I was told that a buyback wasn't possible due to there not being any record of active recalls. On September 22, 2021, our car broke down on the highway, with it being the engine issue that is currently on recall. We have an unusable car still being paid for, a car that shouldn't have been sold to us because it was on recall, a car that should've been buyback but wasn't due to greed, and no answers as Hyundai is saying that the buyback period has ended since the first use was February 2018, even though we became owners of the car 5/25/2019. The component that failed was the engine. Its currently in Plaza Hyundai's service lot. Our safety was put at risk not once but twice, but the most recent being 9/21/2021, we were on a major highway at 70mph when the engine started to slow down, smoke, and vibrate violently. The vehicle is currently being serviced for parts, but they don't think its the engine. There were previous issues but I would have to recollect on the memory of when.

On 9/22/21, was driving on a major highway when gears started spinning loudly, acceleration went down to 30mph from 65mph, car started vibrating and smoke coming from the exhaust. Made it safely to the next exit without incident by a prayer and slowly made our way to a Hyundai dealer at 5-10mph, any faster would shut down the car. We barely made it and tow truck came and towed it to original dealer that sold it to us. Previously we told them about the recall update but it went on deaf ears from the dealer and Hyundai. Now we don't have a car, and most likely needs a new engine.

First my car started consuming and alarming amont of oil at 40000 to 50000 miles in 2020. I have been put through 3 oil consumption test and every 1,000 miles i took it in it was consuming more oil. One time it had lost 4 quart of oil in 1,000 miles with no oil leaks detected. They never did anything about it. Early 2021 While i was on the highway in traffic going 70 miles per hour. Mile car started to sputter and slowed down to 30 miles per hour in the middle of the highway at night. I was so afraid that i would be hit. Another time it slowed down on the highway 1 day after i got an oil change and i was out of town on a sunday. The car was struggling to get up a highway hill at 25 miles an hour with other cars going well over the 70 mile speed limt. I was terrified. The dealer finally admitted that the engin is bad but Hyundai will not replace it. Help please!!!!!

PROBLEM WAS PERTAINING TO CAMPAIGN 953 ENGINE PROBLEMS. A WIRING HARNESS WAS PUT IN, AND THE DEALER UPDATED THE SOFTWARE THAT HAD BEEN UPDATED THAT MARCH, AND THEY SAID THAT WAS ALL FIXED. I HAVE WATCHED THE VIDEO ON THIS CAMPAIGN PROBLEM, AND IT SCARES ME WHERE I CANNOT TAKE MY CAR OUT OF TOWN/ON VACATIONS OUT WEST! IF THIS ENGINE FAILS, I WOULDN'T ALWAYS BE ABLE TO GET TO A DEALER. I'M LIVING IN THE FEAR OF THIS, AND AM SUPPOSED TO HAVE "PEACE OF MIND" ENJOYING MY NICE CAR? I HAD TO LEAVE VACATION A DAY EARLY( RESORT PAID FOR THAT FINAL NIGHT WE DIDN'T GET TO ENJOY), SPENT THAT NIGHT IN HOTEL, JUST TO GET TO THAT DEALER TO PICK UP MY CAR BEFORE THEIR CLOSING TIME. I HAD TO FIGHT TO GET THE FULL REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE CAR RENTAL AND ONE NIGHT HOTEL BILL. THROUGH THE ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE, HYUNDAI FINALLY PAID THAT WHICH WAS ONLY FAIR WHEN A RECALL WAS INVOLVED! NOW I FIND THAT I HAVE CANCELLED GOING TO OUT OF TOWN FUNERALS, AND SHORT WEEKEND VACATIONS, BECAUSE MY ENGINE COULD GO OUT. I HAVE ASKED FOR A NEW ENGINE, AND THE LAST MESSAGE FROM HYUNDAI WAS ALL ABOUT MY CAR DOESN'T FIT THE DESCRIPTION FOR THE LEMON LAW....WHICH I HAVE NEVER MENTIONED.I HAVE ASKED FOR STATISTICS ON HOW MANY ENGINES HAVE HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF THIS CAMPAIGN 953 ISSUE, BUT NO ONE HAS ANY! IS THIS TRUE?? HOW CAN I GET MY ENGINE REPLACED, SO I CAN ENJOY MY CAR? THE CONTACT NOTICED A LARGE AMOUNT OF FUEL WAS IN THE OIL PAN DUE TO THE DIPSTICK. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER, THE MANUFACTURER SUGGESTED THAT THEY REPLACE THE FUEL INJECTORS, DRAIN THE OIL, AND PLACE NEW OIL IN THE ENGINE. THE DEALER STATED THAT WAS ALL THEY WOULD DO TO THE VEHICLE. A NICE MAN AT THE OTHER END OF THE PHONE CHECKED MY CAR AS I WAS DRIVING BUT COULD FIND NOTHING AFTER RUNNING THE DIAGNOSTIC. HE SAID I SHOULD BE ABLE TO DRIVE IT ABOUT ANOTHER 300 MILES BUT SHOULD GET TO MY DEALERSHIP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I TOLD HIM I WAS OVER 300 MILES FROM HOME SO HE HELPED LOCATE A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP CLOSER AND I HEADED THAT WAY WHILE STILL TALKING TO THE CUSTOMER CARE GUY. AS I WAS GETTING ON THE ON-RAMP TO TRAVEL I-35, THE CAR JERKED AND ACTED LIKE IT LOST POWER AND I PULLED OVER. THE GUY CALLED A TOW TRUCK TO COME AFTER THE CAR AND HAVE IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. MY CAR WENT TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING EITHER AND SAID THEY HAD TO WAIT ON HYUNDAI CORPORATE TO AUTHORIZE THEM TO CHECK THE ENGINE. THAT TOOK SEVERAL MORE DAYS BUT ONCE THEY RECEIVED THE AUTHORIZATION, THEY DROPPED THE OIL PAN AND FOUND METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL WHICH INDICATED MY ENGINE WAS BLOWN AND WOULD NEED A REPLACEMENT. INITIALLY, THEY SAID IT MIGHT TAKE UP TO 6 WEEKS. AFTER SEVERAL PHONE CALLS HYUNDAI FINALLY ASSIGNED ME A CASE NUMBER AND A CASE MANAGER. THE CASE MANAGER WAS WORTHLESS, WOULD NOT RETURN MY CALLS OR SEND ANY UPDATES ABOUT THE STATUS OF MY VEHICLE. FINALLY, HYUNDAI CORPORATE ASSIGNED ME ANOTHER CASE MANAGER AND AFTER LOOKING AT MY STATE'S LEMON LAWS, I ASKED THEM TO BUY MY CAR BACK FROM ME. THE SECOND CASE MANAGER SENT ME A LETTER ASKING FOR SOME DOCUMENTATION AND TOLD ME THEY WOULD SEND A RE-PURCHASE OFFER. THAT WAS OVER A MONTH AGO AND I STILL HAVE HEARD NOTHING FROM HYUNDAI.
