On 08/15/2025 I started the vehicle and heard a ticking noise that lasted for 3 seconds and stopped. The same noise happened when I would start the car in the mornings. It never lasted more than 3 seconds and I wasn't too sure what the noise was. There was no engine lights that came on so I wasnt too worried about it. On 8/21/2025 my husband went to the store and when he came back the car shut off while backing into the driveway. He said it made a weird noise and just shut off. We tested the battery but it was still charged. We brought it to our mechanic and he called us 15 mins later saying he found metal shavings on the oil filter and the engine had seized. He recommended going to the dealer, which is 90 miles away. Around the 15th we had received the warranty extension for 15 years/150,000 miles from Hyundai talking about a knocking sound that can lead to engine seizure. So I called the dealer and they said to bring it in. We got the car towed to the dealer on 8/26/2025. On 09/04/2025 they called to let us know that they ran the test on the engine but Hyundai was not going to help due to the car having 176,000 miles. They agreed the engine seized due to rod failure but wasn't going to offer Goodwill assistance, even with the service history we submitted from our carfax that showed regular scheduled maintenance recorda. We bought the car on 03/08/2025 when it was at 170,000 miles. I knew about the other open recalls and had them fixed on 06/12/2025 ( after being delayed from the dealer for 2 months because they couldn't get the parts for the auxiliary canister). Luckily the car died in the driveway and not in the middle of traffic. Hyundai has known about their Lambda engines having this issue and the KDSS recall was not available for this car which could have triggered a lifetime warranty on the engine. I barely had the car for 5 months.
015 Santa Fe Ultimate. 134,000 miles. Original owner. All maintenance done per manual. Wife on hwy 2 hrs. Started loud engine knocking noise. No warning whatsiever.Pulled off closet exit. Stalled.Restarted.Pulled into gas station. Trusted mechanic inspected. Stated not to drive. He had identical vehicle at shop,identical problem.110,000 miles. Needs new engine.Noticed on fbook Forum,"Hyundai Engine Problems". Alot of similar complaints posted. Hyundai not warranting over 100,000 miles. This could have been much worse if it had been at night,in a rural area. Shocked has not been a recall!

At 110K miles my Sante Fe Sport began burning increasing amounts of oil. My mechanic says he does not know why it is burning oil. Today it has 134171K miles on it. It has been burning a quart or more of oil weekly. I drive about 200 miles per week.
The engine has basically come apart. There is a timing chain issue, the engine is not recalled and it is getting where the car cannot drive. There is a constant smell of burning electrical wires. There’s also issues with the heating and air that is related to electrical.
My car burns a lot of oil. The Hyundai dealership service center ran a controlled test and validated that my car burned a quart of oil in 1000 miles. This is not normal. It turns out that there are a lot of Hyundai owners with the exact same problem. It seems there are bad piston rings.
I am filing this complaint regarding my 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, which recently suffered engine failure due to an unresolved issue related to error code P1326. The check engine light began flashing, and despite multiple visits to my local Hyundai service center (Gateway Hyundai Nissan in Fargo, ND), the problem was not properly diagnosed or repaired, resulting in catastrophic engine damage. The vehicle has a branded title, but I have confirmed that, according to Hyundai's warranty policies, recalls and campaigns are still applicable to branded vehicles. Hyundai has issued a recall for engine defects associated with error code P1326, yet the service center has refused to replace the engine under this recall. Instead, they are insisting on an out-of-pocket repair cost of $9,300.56, even though the engine failure is a result of the defect addressed in the recall. This failure occurred while I'm driving with my wife and 9-month-old infant, which posed a significant safety risk. Had the service center properly addressed the issue during my earlier visits, this situation could have been prevented. I am filing this complaint to request that Hyundai be held accountable for the engine replacement as part of the recall and to prevent further safety risks for other drivers experiencing this defect. I respectfully ask the NHTSA to investigate Hyundai’s handling of this recall and ensure that customers with branded vehicles are not unfairly denied critical safety repairs. The manufacturer must ensure that engine replacements under the recall are carried out for all affected vehicles, regardless of their title status, to prevent dangerous road situations. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Car was burning lots of engine oil and lost power, dealer said nothing was wrong with it. months later when to limp mode, lacks of power in the highway, dealer said it lost compression on 2 cylinders and that I need a new engine. I ask them if the vehicle has a recall and they said no, all my research said that this type of engine has a recall for me they are looking for any loophole in order not to replace the engine
Sudden loss of engine power in traffic on highway in funeral procession. My safety was put at risk on the highway. The check engine light came on intermittently the previous week. I made six trips to the Hyundai dealer in Plymouth, MA. First told the oil was low when the dipstick was normal. Oil was changed. Check engine light came on as I left the lot. Two more trips computer reset two different ways. Engine does not have normal power going up hill. Another trip to dealer EVAP hose collapsed. Light back on and off. I paid for diagnostic fee $175, oil change then told it was CVV and timing issue with $2817.89 in parts because the tech "saw" the problem. >$3000 estimate for labor. Repair started now told CVV is not the problem metal shavings in oil OCV intake and exhaust valves and needs new engine. The car had $60,000 miles on it and was extremely well maintained. It does not have a warrantee. This is same issue as the Hyundai recall for metal debris left in oil passages of engine crankshaft during manufacture though my model is not covered by the recall. Hyundai declines to help. There is a huge personal safety and fire risk from this defective manufacturing process.
The 3.3 liter V6 GDI engine failed while driving at approximately 136000 miles. Heard a ticking noise start shortly after leaving home, and had hesitation and shaking upon acceleration from a stop sign, but saw no warning lamps. Went around the block back home to find out the ticking noise was under the hood. Motor oil was almost 3 quarts low, but only 2/3's of the way through the service interval. Checked for leaking, saw none dripping, but did see oil on the under of the rear differential. I then let the car run for minute or so in the garage and looked for leaks. I saw no active leaking and ticking was quieter, so I drove to a close gas station to get a little gas and test drive, still no warning lights. On the way back, about a mile from home, the engine light came on, despite the ticking sound being gone. Within a quarter mile, at the next stop sign, I let off the brake to accelerate and the car started rolling backwards, causing the vehicle approaching from behind to swerve into the turn lane. The vehicle was no longer running, and wouldn't restart. Towed to local mechanic and was told 2 days ago the engine was seized, and replacement was needed. I have not contacted any dealership or the manufacturer, as I the second owner and do not have a warranty. However I have spent the last 2 days reading seemingly 1000s of articles and forum posts related to this engine, whether it be in a Hyundai or a Kia. Several of the articles I have read about this 3.3 liter GDI Lambda -II engine and it's horror stories, referenced this nhtsa site as a place where complaints can be made, so here I am. Many articles describe the same problem.. hesitation... ticking.. sudden mysterious oil loss... little, if any warning... complete failure while driving, putting safety at risk. With the problem with engine so blatantly rampant, it is my fear that after I scrap this vehicle, there will be a recall. Over the phone quotes, and online pricing have ranged from $7500-20000 for repair.
My 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS 3.3L engine started ticking sound while driving in residential are with the speed below 25miles. Within seconds, Engine started screaming and dropped power in the middle of the road. It is a huge security and life threatening risk. I was lucky that I was driving in residential area with very slow speed, and just imagine if it happens in the middle of the freeway cruising at 65MPH. It is at 107k miles and not sure what to do at this time. Hyundai better recall there 3.3L V6 engines and help us our here. My vehicle is now dead and I have nowhere to go to get help because it a huge cost to get it fixed.

We were on our way home from the children's hospital in Philadelphia for my daughter (4 hours away from home) and my 2015 Santa Fe with the 3.3L motor began to knock. My dad (who is very mechanically inclined) pulled over at a gas station and checked oil and other fluids. It was low, even though I just had oil changed 900 miles before and it was checked before our trip to the hospital. We bought oil and put it in. Knocking was still there but was not as loud. We got back on interstate. Few miles up the road it completely lost power, extreme knocking, no lights on in the dash or any gauges out of normal range. He checked oil and it was completely empty but there was no oil trail or anything. We coasted into a crossover and that's when he saw the connecting rod under the car.
The engine is continually knocking. It has caused the powertrain system to start to fail. The interior portion of the car with electrical is malfunctioning and causing the car to lag. Many attempts have been taken to get the vehicle fixed to no avail. $1,000 just to take out the engine to diagnose the problem.
While I was driving on the highway in the left lane, smoke came from the engine, then it started coming from underneath the car. The car turned off. I was forced to stop on the left lane of the highway and exit the vehicle and walk as far away as possible. I called 911, then I noticed fire coming from the engine. This was unsafe for myself as well as other riders on the highway. Firefighters came and put out the fire. Once they left, I was left by myself waiting for the tow truck to arrive. No police officers helped to keep myself safe while waiting on the left shoulder once the highway re-opened. When asked if I needed a police report, the police officer said no because it wasn't a crash. The vehicle was inspected by my insurance company and it was deemed a total loss. There were no warning signs or messages or symptoms prior to the failure at all.
During routine vehicle operation when entering an interstate highway, , the vehicle developed a loud knocking sound from engine bay along with high RPM abnormal shifting. Vehicle was stopped as soon as possible in the safety lane when it stalled and shut off. No warning lights were present during the time of failure. Vehicle was towed to home of residence.
I own a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited Ultimate and without any warnings or incidents experienced engine failure. The Hyundai dealer told me I need a new engine at the cost of $23,000.00. I know you have received complaints and are investigating these engines. I was driving the car at the time and lost power.
engine replacement can be avoided you should use fuel injector cleaner every 3000 miles, sediment clogs injectors, and pistons which fuel leaks into oil pan, causing oil/fuel mixture to burn, creating overheating, which leads to oil burning, and eventually engine seizing. If you use fuel injector cleaner every 3000 miles this will prevent needing to replace motor.
My wife was driving the vehicle on Monday afternoon and everything was fine and today she started the vehicle and the engine started to sound weirdly, she called me over the phone and she popped up the hood like I told her and she put her phone near the engine gave a little gas and I heard like there was no oil in it, she turned the vehicle off like I told her to do, waited like 5 minutes For the oil to settle and the oil level was half. I'm waiting for tomorrow Wednesday the 27th of March to call any Hyundai dealer near me to see what they say about this situation.
Out of the blue, the engine started knocking badly. Immediately pulled over and checked engine oil which was extremely low. (This was odd since I regularly check oil levels and keep up with oil changes.) I happened to be very close to an oil change shop, drove over and they did an oil change. They found silver and gold metal shavings in the old oil and topped off with new oil. The knocking was muted but came back by the time I got home. I have not driven the car since. Seems to have the same fate as many other Hyundai vehicles in the current recall, but this has the 3.3l engine. I've also found there is a petition to add the 3.3l engine to the recall.
Engine with rod bearing failure occurred at 108k miles. No check engine light warning came on to notify with engine knock sound as the only indicator that there was a mechanical issue. Regular oil changes have been done on the vehicle however oil levels were low when checked on the day of engine failure (no low oil light came on). 3.3 L V6 engine is not covered under Hyundai’s KSDS Software Update (Campaign 966) and extended warranty however issue is the same as other covered models and years.
While driving down the highway the engine stopped. Towed it to a mechanic. They told me the engine seized up and that this was happening alot with Hyundai vehicles.
I have a Hyundai Santa Fé XL 3.3L 2015. I had a real danger situation with my family some months ago, when I had to pull over on a Highway after engine failure. I have this car for 11 months and all my maintenance records. Car died while I was driving putting me and my family in a danger situation. Not alerts or warnings signs. The car just died. I towed the car to a Hyundai Dealer, and after 3 weeks they reached out to me telling my engine is gone and there is no coverage/warranty/recall for that. After some research on-line I found thousands of people describing exactly the same issue. Major engine failure without any warning even with all schedule maintenance on date. I pretty confident that I am being victim of this knowing Hyundai issue and they don't care to keep people life in danger.
Oil consumtion issue. Same issue on their 4 cylinder motor. No indicator to tell you there is low oil. Engine fails. In addition, they do not manufacture the engine for replacement. I was instructed, by law they have to manufacture parts for 10 years. It is within 10 years and they haven't made parts for this motor for some time now. I request that this be investigated, as from searching the internet there are many people that have similar issues with the 3.3 liter engine. Hyundai should be force to recall them, just like they did for the 4 cylinder. In addition, their ingition system is flawed and can be easily stolen. Yet another reason why they should be forced to recall the vehicles.
Recent cold weather starts in the morning (40-50 degrees fahrenheit) have caused my car to have poor or stalled acceleration. It will occasionally not go past 20 or 40 mph while the RPMs rev high. The DTC error code would read P2565 as a pending code. An independent mechanic changed out my transmission fluid and switched out my boost pressure sensor but the problem is still there. Hyundai says that they need to replicate the problem but it does not occur when I take it to them so it's very hard to have this intermittent issue diagnosed by them. This is a very dangerous issue in my opinion if your cars engine revs high without accelerating and can potentially cause serious accidents and injury. I know I'm not the only person experiencing this issue as I've read on online forums of other car owners describing the same issue. Please issue a safety recall before someone is seriously injured or dies as a result of this intermittent issue.
Premature failure of engine that was regularly maintained. Vehicle started sounding louder than normal and stalled spontaneously while driving, stopping in the middle of an intersection. No warning lights illuminated prior to incident. Vehicle had started again when prompted to finish traveling to destination. Oil was checked at destination and was low by 1.5 quarts. Vehicle was towed to nearest Hyundai dealership. Vehicle has now been at dealership for almost 5 months. Tech stated that internals were extremely clean upon inspection but that oil port to 1 or more cylinders may have been blocked, causing burning or premature ware and failure. No metal shavings were found in oil according to tech, and engine still turned freely. Hyundai corporate has agreed to cover 90% of cost to replace motor and offer a 12 month /12,000 mile warranty.
My 2015 Santa Fe Limited with 44,000 miles developed a knocking sound coming from the engine. No lights appeared on the dashboard, no low oil pressure warning, etc. I was able to drive it to my local dealership, but the brakes were very jerky and the car shut off when I pulled into the parking lot. I was told I needed a new engine, but was denied Hyundai paying for it because the 5 years/100,000 mile warranty had expired. I called corporate and pointed out many instances of excess oil consumption, recalls, and extended warranties due to engines. I was told that my engine didn’t qualify and I would have to pay to have it fixed. I was also given a phone number for a class action lawsuit because Hyundai knows of these kinds of engine problems on my make and model.

The engine caught fire and the vehicle is a total loss. Acceleration became inconsistent at time of the incident while driving on the freeway. Once that was noticed, and at a speed of 50mph, I immediately heard a loud clicking noise coming from the engine. ALL warning lights also immediately went off. I noticed white smoke and pulled over on the freeway. Once parked, black smoke was emerging from the engine. I exited the vehicle to safety and within 30 seconds, flames emerged from the vehicle. The vehicle maintenance was kept current during the 7 months of ownership. There were no prior warnings of any issues before the incident occurred.
Hello, I'm not sure if this is something that you would handle or not. My husband and I have a Hyundai Santa Fe (husband-2015, Mine - 2013). We both bought the vehicles used and haven't had any major problems until about a year ago when both of our vehicles started drinking motor oil like people drink water. We don't have any signs of a leak anywhere. We had taken it to the Hyundai Dealerships and other mechanics and both say that Hyundai has been known to have this problem. Many years ago, I had a Hyundai Sonata which I bought brand new around 2003 and had it for many years. I never had this problem. After doing my research, I have seen where other people have had this problem with their Hyundai vehicles. I emailed several people about our situation, one being [XXX] , and received a response from Hailey, Customer Service Specialist with Hyundai Motor America and her response was for us to have Oil Consumption Testing done. She said that it would be our responsibility to pay for the testing and any repairs that need to be done since we're past the warranty and the years of our vehicles. From what the dealership and other mechanics keep saying, I feel it should be a recall for this problem due to Hyundai being aware that this has been a problem with their vehicles for years. I've known people to have cars much older than ours that never had an oil consumption problem such as this. Also, from what I read, this Oil Consumption Testing is a process that is done in stages which can be costly. Plus this Oil Consumption problem can lead to our engine dying without us knowing when it will die. With this problem, we don't have any warning that our motor oil is low or empty for our oil light will either blink or don't come on at all. I have seen mine blink, but by then the oil was already gone. My husband's oil stick had burnt and he purchased another one from Hyundai. The new one is now burnt and mine is burnt as well. On October 7, while driving on the interstate, the engine started rattling, then stopped completely, causing me to drift across lanes to get to the shoulder. Upon restarting the car, the check engine light was flashing and the car was in limp mode. After bringing it to a shop, they diagnosed the P1326 engine code, where I was instructed to drive the car on the back roads to the nearest dealership, 50 miles away. The dealership confirmed that the engine needs to be replaced. One month prior to this incident, a P0420 code appeared (catalytic converter needs to be replaced). I had not yet replaced it, since the part is on backorder. My go-to auto shop is still waiting for the catalytic converter to come in. The car currently has about 137,000 miles on it, and has been serviced and inspected regularly. If the engine needs to be inspected, the car is currently awaiting a new engine at the dealer. It will take several months for the dealer to replace the engine, so the car should be available. My safety and the general public's safety was put at risk when my car became difficult to control when the engine stopped unexpectedly while driving at highway speeds on the interstate.

Engine light coded 1326 on July 28, 2023. Car engine was replaced Aug- September 20, 2023. September 27 the engine light coded 0263. October 4 the engine light coded 0263. October 5 the engine light coded 0263 October 13 the engine light coded 0263.
Driving along a highway and the motor blew. It had enough oil in it as I had checked it that morning before leaving for a family reunion.
Oil Consumption to Rod Bearings; yes can be inspected but have to pay $280 just for inspection. While driving on the freeway my car abruptly slammed in speed from 65mph to 20 causing a lot of near miss rear ending and me to pull off the freeway! No, I don't trust my local dealer due to the money making scheme they have! A mechanic I know had discovered that my vehicle has been eating the oil too quickly and upon the inspection has noted that the spark plugs, knock sensor and my rod bearings were needed to be replaced due to the oil burnout! There was no warning! The car slammed to 20 mph and my check engine light began to blink, when it did and I was able to pull over the code it read was 'P1326' which I've not had issues with since I bought the car back in 2020!
2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport all recall repairs made. Catastrophic engine failure in March 2020. Hyundai took vehicle in to replace engine, called me a liar when I gave them towing receipt. Never got an apology, took 3 years to get the $35 towing fee back. Hyundai had another recall- don't park in garage- fire could occur and they changed out fuse. During this time my dash instrument panel still worked but after recall, I could not change from Jan 1, 2000 to current date. Hyundai told me to take it up with them during the next recall. I did and they took 4 days to tell me that it was a bad sim card in the large display and it would cost me $600. Hyundai has ignored 4-5 letters to their corporate HQ in California and have provided much disservice and do not care about customers, service nor support. They adjusted the transmission so that it jumps or shudders under load going up a hill. There is no sense wasting time dealing with local, mid Atlantic or National Hyundai representatives as they do not care about quality, service so I have instructed loved ones to buy Honda or Subaru instead of Hyundai or Kia. I want to write to South Korea HQ of Hyundai but that does not seem to work. Hyundai HQ- 10550 Talbert Avenue, Fountain Valley, CA 92728 0850, USA is worthless. Their head of customer service told me that she is the highest ranking person with whom I will deal with as she accused me of lying to her about my $35 cash tow, plus my insurance payment and a $10 tip. I could not get an apology nor anyone from Hyundai Corp to deal with this customer dis-service representative. I guess I am lucky that the car is still working with transmission shuddering but a new engine almost 60k miles ago. I will trade in shortly and supplement my kids payments to buy anything but Hyundai or Kia products in the future. Heck when I bought it the dealerships first oil change took 3 hours as they lost the car and never provide the free car wash. Total rip off and they don't care
Car has been dealer maintained. Driving on the highway, the engine lost a rod and engine is now dead. Car has 101k miles. Dealer said it was out of warranty and cost would be out of pocket to replace engine. Only issues before blown engine was slight engine oil consumption. Nothing significant.
We have had issues with our 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited that culminated in effectively lose of the car. The engine has a knocking, and is leaking coolant now. This started with the car sometimes sort of stuttering when you press the gas, or sometimes sudden lose of power while driving. It now sounds like a rod may. E bad, I’m no expert. Hyundai has said I need a new engine. The car which I bought new in 2015, has 116k miles on it. It has been well kept. I have older Hyundais that still have great engines at much higher mileage. I am registering this complaint, because it seems strange to loose an engine of a well maintained car at 116K miles. I know there are investigations and recalls on the smaller Santa Fe engines. But I suspect there is an issue with the larger 3.3L engine too. I’m registering the complaint so attention can be garnered for the 3.3L engine too. I suspect I’m not the only one with 3.3L engine having an issue. Regards
Loud knocking noise in engine Had to have a tow
Vehicle has been consuming oil between oil changes. Recently the ABS, Down hill assist, and traction control lights came on. We took it to the dealer and were advised it was a wheel speed sensor in the passenger rear, but they wanted over $600 so we did not repair. Two days later all the lights went off and we had no issues. A month later I drove to Florida, checked and filled the oil with a little over one quart. On my way back the RPM shot up to close to 6K, the engine light started flashing, oil and battery light came on, and the car lost all power qnd started shuttering. There was a strong burning smell when we pulled over, that may it hard to breathe. As of writing this we were told it sounds like the engine has seized, but they are 5 months out on looking into it.
Warning light for catalytic converter came on and said it was knock sensor mechanic said engine problem and Hyundai is aware.

Husband was driving on interstate in Indianapolis, Indiana on 8/18/2023. Went to pass another vehicle and suddenly lost power. Was able to get pulled over on the shoulder and had car towed to repair shop. Mechanic advised motor seized up, unable to get the engine to even turn over. No warning lights, oil was only a quart low and have always maintained my vehicle. Have taken in for all recalls and regular maintenance. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but he was driving in rush hour traffic, with construction in the area. This could have been a very bad situation. Hyundai needs to do what is right and fix the issue. I now have to buy a new car and really not in a financial situation to do so!
My 2015 Santa Fe V6 AWD engine had 2 pistons seize up while driving. NO warning lights. I bought the Car with approximately 75K Miles and by 85k miles engine lights came on and engine was losing power. Local mechanic spent $2K trying to fix it but could not. Sent to Hyundai dealer where I purchased it. I spent another 2K (they covered about 3K as Hyundai would NOT cover repairs so dealer did). After month without the car, I got it back. 15k miles later (just as car turned over 100k miles) the car engine began making strange noise but no warning lights. Called AAA and thought we could make it 3 miles to repair shop but engine died in traffic. A second engine request from different Hyundai dealer was denied as "out of warrenty". No oil was leaking (and just had it changed!), no sign of issues of any kind, it just blew. Lucky no one was injured and was able to get to side of the road. I feel they issue should have been fixed at 85K and there must be a real piston issue in this vehicle.
Engine threw a rod. Brought it to Kearny Mesa Hyundai here in San Diego, they submitted a claim to see if corporate would grant an engine replacement and it was denied due to it being a V6
Rod knock, engine failure. Vehicle still runs. Engine was accepted for replacement via Kearny Mesa Hyundai dealership.
On August 2, 2023 I was driving my truck and it completely shut off on me on the highway. I push the start button to turn the engine and it just keep turning like it wanted to start, but it didn't. Called the tow truck to take it to the shop, to then get a call after two days saying that they couldn't find out what was going on, because when they ran the test it didn't come back with any code. The clerk informed me that when he started my truck that next day, it cranked as if nothing was wrong. He drove it around about 15-20 minutes ,and it didn't do anything like what it had done the previous day before. I am very concerned because this could have been a bad outcome because I was in the highway on Wednesday. I need someone to further look into this matter.

My vehicle engine seized while driving on the freeway. There was absolutely no warning. No lights for oil issue nothing flagged. I had no previous issues with my vehicle and I am concerned that I will have to pay for this myself .
This vehicle has the 3.3L V6 engine in it. It has a blown engine due to oil consumption. We did regular maintenance to this car, including oil regular oil changes. There was no warning lights for low oil. Engine failed while my wife was driving on the highway. We had it towed to my mechanic and he found it was 4 quarts low on oil even though it had recently had routine service. Hyundai says this is not covered under warranty - I understand that MANY other Hyundai owners of the 3.3L V6 are having the same problem. Engine has 113K miles on it.
When passing a vehicle on the highway, engine light came on and power was reduced. After, diagnose was informed of needing new engine. Took to get 2nd opinion and same thing was needed.
During normal driving operations the car lost all power as our daughter and her 2 children were driving down the street. She called us and notified us that the car would barely run and that she had her hazard lights on and had no safe place to pull over. When she arrived back home from a few miles away the motor was making a very loud knocking and tapping noise. I immediately checked the oil in the car which we have changed on a regular basis and very recently and to our disbelief there wasn't a drop of oil on the dipstick. No indicators or warning lights had come on to tell us the oil was low. We immediately called a local Hyundai dealership, and they explained that thousands of people have experienced consumption of oil with no obvious leaks causing catastrophic engine failure in Hyundais. Upon inspection from the dealership, it was determined that the motor had spun rod bearings due to excessive oil consumption. However, we have since discovered that the 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe is pending a class action lawsuit in California and no recall is current for this year and model. This could have caused serious and devastating fatalities to not only our family but others as well. Hyundai has not yet been willing to work with us for a car we purchased a little over a year ago and are still financing. The warranty did not transfer to a 2nd owner and we were not informed of this. Now the car sits at a dealership and I continue to make payments on a useless vehicle. The manufacturer of Hyundai's engine is the same for many models. However, not all models and years have had recalls yet. This puts thousands of people, like us, at risk for serious injuries, fatalities, and devastating financial loss. The public relies on their vehicles for their family's transportation and their jobs. I did my research and searched for this year, make, and model and found nothing that deterred me from finding this vehicle unsafe or unreliable. Hyundai is not in good faith protecting customers.
Owner states his 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe developed an engine noise, and the check engine light came on. The vehicle was stopped and restarted after 30 minutes, but the engine noise continued. The dealer replaced the engine; however, the owner is seeking rental reimbursement. Also, the vehicle was crashed in the dealer's possession and determined a total loss.

I came through car was and proceeded to vacuum area, as I approached the area I applied my brakes and car sped up jumping the curb. I tried pumping the brakes and finally brought vehicle to a stop after applying pressure. I tried to back up, but felt I was going to damage the vacuum hoses, so I pulled forward believing I had clear area to get to the other side. As I pulled forward I didn’t realize how close I was to a brick column as it didn’t appear in my side view mirror. As a result right rear door, rear quarter panel and trim were damaged.
Engine suddenly went into limp mode and jerked steering while on the highway (engine light happened AFTER). We started about 60mph, then vehicle slowed to about 30mph in a few seconds. Almost crashed into a semi-truck trying to get my car under control, then almost caused a pileup collision behind a slow-moving traffic control vehicle. Limped into town. Engine was rattling. Found the engine to be very hot under the hood. Found oil dripping underneath (research says certain Hyundai Santa Fe were recalled for this issue). Oil was low, even though I had it topped off less than a week before. It seems this may be related to large oil use resulting in engine overheat. Mechanic later disclosed to me there was oil buildup underneath and in the engine. Towed into another city to get available mechanic. Found error code P1326. Mechanic took a couple days to determine it was NOT caused by faulty sensor. (attached invoice) Towed to another city where I could have it taken into the lot (there is a long backload of cases at Hyundai). I saw about a dozen of the exact same model as my car in the service lot waiting repair (and many similar models). Told by dealership it would take 2 months to repair and there would be a diagnosis fee. This shouldn't have happened to my car. It was relatively new and low miles for an engine failure. The result was an expensive series of expenses and extremely dangerous series of near-collisions. It has been difficult to contact and navigate Hyundai corporate for help with this. They seem to have a lot of backlogs of these problems related to my model. I get put on hold for long periods. I was assigned case number and case manager who hasn't contacted me yet. I am still without a car as of today.
I was driving my 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe on the parkway and while changing lanes, I wanted to accelerate to maintain a safe speed. As I attempted to accelerate I noticed that the car was slowing down. There were no strange sounds or dashboard lights I was aware of but the tachometer read zero. We pull onto the shoulder and were eventually towed to my mechanic. He determined with some confidence that the engine had seized. It will be towed to a Hyundai service facility where it will be evaluated and diagnosed and possible fixed for free under the current warranty

My car have a engine lights on due the code #1326 ,Vibrations indicating excessive connecting Rod bearing wear . the caris on safe mode. I was check on line and i see that hyundai have a lots problem with the motor GDI 2.4 . some report says that the car can catch fire . also the hyundai car have a lots of recall regarding a safety issues . i think the hyundai shoud be responsible to repair all the problems this cars have because how they allowed to put the cars on the market with all these problems.
The check engine light began flashing without warning. I experienced sluggish performance and loss of power. Luckily I made it to my home. I took my car to my local mechanic and was informed my car was "burning oil" or over consuming oil. I never had an oil light indicator come on or any warnings that my car was having an oil issue. The only way to fix this is engine replacement. I called the dealership where I purchased my car and was informed that the warranty had expired. My car is sitting in my driveway inoperable. From my understanding this is not supposed to happen and is the result of poor, defective manufacturing of the engine components on the part of Hyundai. A warranty shouldn't be a consideration in the repair. Upon researching this issue I found that while there is a recall, my vehicle isn't on that list, but is on the affected list for this problem. Hyundai has been manufacturing and selling these vehicles to consumers for years with full knowledge of the problem. Out of 174 complaints on this site, 94 are related to the engine.
With out warning this car died and started smoking on a very busy road. I was almost hit several times trying to coast to the median.
Engine rod bearing are failing making noise and causing loss of power i have a v6 engine. I also had a hyundai sonata with a 4 cylinder engine that was doing the same thing and engine was covered under recall my santa fe only has 105,xxx miles.
I have attached a PDF with all documented information including service records, tow, etc. on December 3, 2022 I was driving home on the highway at approximately 45 mph and the engine started shaking uncontrollably. I barely made it into my driveway as it is directly off the highway. I have proceeded to talk to the dealership and Hyundai Motors without any correspondence of help.
Check engine light came on. It was a Sunday so we took it to the local auto parts shop and they said it was a pressure valve but they couldn’t say exactly which one. We made an appointment to have it checked but when we tried to drive it just a short distance (about a mile) it started stalling so we took it back home (about a mile back). By then it smelled like it was burning so we decided to have it towed rather than risk driving it to the repair shop. However by the time the tow truck came the next day, the car would not even start. The car has less than 70,000 miles and has been regularly maintained, but we are being told it needs a new engine and we have to pay for it. We bought from the dealership and it was only leased prior to that. We thought when we got it it was still covered under the originally warranty but we are now told that was not the case and it is not covered by the warranty. With the number of engine problems on these specific cars it seems very unlikely that this is something that we should be held responsible for but we are not sure how to hold Hyundai accountable.
The engine failed. The failure started at 56,000 miles with knocking and got worse over time. My entire family and others safety was put at risk due to the engine failure and possible lack of performance at any time and chance of fire. The dealership and an independent mechanic confirmed engine would fail and has inspected the vehicle. There was no warnings or lights that illuminated on the vehicle
2015 Hyundai Santa Fe engine stalling or shutting off unexpectedly while driving. Hyundai didn't approve the request sent by West Huston Hyundai to replace an Engine due to lack of maintenance; however, the West Huston Hyundai service department did recalls and oil changes recently (18 Jan. 2023), and another service was done a few months ago in August 2022.
While driving home from a meeting I began to hear a knock. It sounded like a stick was hitting my fan. There were no warning lights on at this time. Once I turned the corner onto my street, the car died, luckily I was able to just coast home. After getting home, I checked the oil and there was 0 oil in the car. I knew that this is bad. We just had an oil change completed a month ago. I went to the store and purchased some oil and filled the car, which allowed me to start the car and pull into my driveway. I had a fried come over and take a look at it with me, we heard 2 separate sounds, a deep knocking sound and a tinging sound. We decided to try and take it to a shop to get them to look at it. On this drive the car completely died and was unable to start the car. Had the car towed to the shop. They replaced the starter and were able to start the car but heard all of the knocking as well. They advised me to see if there was any recalls for engine oil consumption. I called Hyundai and they do not have any active recalls on this vehicle for engine oil consumption. This seems to match all of the other incidents from many others. This truly needs to be investigated and a recall needs to be issued. This is extremely frustrating!
The facts are this: This 2015 Santa Fe Limited only has 100,725 miles on it. I have had it for 70,000 of those 100,000 miles as I am the second owner. I have always had the oil changed at no more than 4000 miles and had all of my servicing done. Two Hyundai dealerships confirmed the issue is the same as with all of the engine issues Hyundai has had in the past and I’m lucky it didn’t stall. No dashboard warning but luckily I heard the noise and brought it in to check before I was possibly injured due to an engine seizing up. The second dealership confirmed as I took it there without telling them what the first dealership told me. Both said it would cost $20,000 for a new engine. It is obvious that this is the same engineering/Manufacturing/parts defect, and a replacement at no charge is deserved and justified. The engine failed at 103000 miles, right after the warranty expired. We were quoted twice as much as it is worth to repair it.
I was driving on the highway when I heard a noise and my vehicle locked up and died. I was able to pull it over and have it towed to the nearest Hyundai dealer. They confirmed it is the same issue they’ve seen with many of these vehicles where the issues with oil cause the bearings to degrade and lockup the engine. There’s nothing they can do unless we provide all the receipts for our oil changes.
While driving on the interstate at approximately 70 miles per hour, the engine powered down and would not restart. A mechanic advised me the engine seized and would need to be replaced, due to lack of oil in the engine. The oil had been changed at regular intervals, and there was no indication of an oil leak or low pressure. I have reviewed Investigation DP 22-003 and believe I have experienced a similar defect.
Driving on the highway on February 8th 2023 and my car just died, no warnings nothing! Luckily I was able to get over and not cause a crash or worse. Engine failure.
Hyundai Dealer claims cam bearing failed causing it to throw a push rod. @ 74k miles. After taking to another local shop for inspection it has no bearing failure or thrown push rod. It actually has a fail/damage piston on #4 cylinder. Timing chains etc are good and oil is still clean. They scoped the cylinder and the piston is bad. This is similar to the failures reported by others on both the v6 and 4cyl Santa Fe. It still runs it’s just loud.
My Santa fe sport has had oil consumption issues since 80k. It got worse prior to 90k. Made appt for oil consumption test. It's burning 1 qt or more every 1000 miles and hyundai refused there was an issue. Since I've had mutiple incidents with check engine light coming on. In spring 2022 I was told I need spark plugs and GDI cleaning which was done. This did not make any difference and check engine light back on couple months later. Recently at 130k I lost power on highway and barely made it home. Dealership reported cylinder 3 is misfiring and need engine. I was told it wasn't covered with extended warranty and I need to pay.
Engine failure at 50,000 miles without lamp warnings or messages (outside mechanics brought to our attention instead). Family safety at risk when car engine popped and stopped running. Engine issues confirmed by dealership after denying there were issues multiple times.
While I was driving, the car began to jerk and stall and the check engine light came on. I was able to drive about 3 more blocks then the car cut completely off. The car cut off in the middle of the street with myself and my children inside. We had to walk home and send for a tow truck. My car only had 78,000 miles. This same thing happened with my 2013 Sonata a few years ago. There seems to be a pattern of the motors cutting off while driving. This has caused loss of control of the car and the inability to steer or move the vehicle.
Driving on a busy, 4-lane street, approaching intersection with larger road (ref: speed limits 40 & 50, respectively). Vehicle suddenly, without warning (normal temp gauge, oil pressure, etc.; check engine light off) lost all ability to accelerate. Narrowly avoided being rear-ended as a car attempted to accelerate while changing lanes. Moving with urgency (2 babies in car-seats at rear, wife at passenger, busy road with some blind spots), I put hazards on, shut the engine off, restarted, and attempted to drive. No response, still no CEL indication. 2nd attempt, shut engine off, restarted, this time shifted to low gear. Able to accelerate up to ~5-10mph and signaling to approaching vehicles with arms through window, we were able to get to a parking lot and called a tow truck. Scary situation to have zero acceleration suddenly with babies in the back on a busy street with blind spots. Towed to a certified Hyundai dealership. Been >5 months now, never received formal diagnosis (however, rec'd quote to replace the engine ILO written cause of failure--odd). Rec'd pics of the engine, told by non-technical service liaison issue was "head got stuck open, during combustion cycle, engine was burned up". This presents identical to previous Hyundai recall RE: failing connecting rod bearing(s) & oil consumption. Upon inspection, motor oil presented: (1) low & (2) copper tinted + fine silver-colored metal shavings--indicative of issue for which Hyundai Theta engine was recalled. Dealer ultimately said Hyundai would not cover and engine failure was due to improper maintenance schedule (I changed oil regularly). This is not an indictment, but resistance to formalized written diagnosis, the evidence in the engine, Hyundai & dealers refusal to cover, and life & history of vehicle (well maintained, 63K miles)--all lead me to suspect Hyundai USA is attempting to sidestep manufacturer responsibility to recall. Similar reports found--compiled a list >100 in one session.
My engine blew after owning it for 16 months. I couldn’t find all of my oil change receipts so my warranty denied it. So I started digging and found there’s so many other people with 2015 Santa Fe’s with blown engines. I took care of my car and have never had any issues with my cars before. I started speaking to others who have the same issues as me. The 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe sport engine was recalled. i was driving to a repair shop with rhe only indication of an issue was an off engine noise then all of a sudden my engine blew and went into limp mode. At some point the amount of people I have seen with a blown engine should be an indication that’s it’s the engine not the driver.
I bought a Santa Fe Sport made by Hyundai Theta Engine Settlement Ext Warranty on March 18, 2022. Also, I did the maintenance and changed the oil after about three months. On August 29, my vehicle shut off while driving without any alarm and did not start again. Imagine what a severe accident may happen to me; thankfully, no one was injured. I towed the car to the Hyundai Wolfchase dealership, in Cordova, TN, and they set an appointment for October 20, 2022. After waiting 50 days, I towed it again there, and their inspections showed the engine seized, and the estimation for repair is $8,200.00. I contacted Hyundai's customer care to use the vehicle warranty that can recall the engine for a vehicle less than ten years old. But they declined my request due to Campaign 953 software that should be installed in my car!!! I did not know about it, and it was not my fault that this car did not have this alarm system.
I was driving on highway and my car lost power and went into limp mode and check engine light started blinking on and off. I was driving about 60 to 65 miles a hour and it went to 25 mph with no warning. We have taken care of our car with regular oil changes at every 3,000 to 3,500 miles. We checked oil and it was 3 quarts low for the second time in between oil changes with NO WARNING LIGHTS coming on but that was a month ago. I was told that losing oil is common for these motors by Valvoline instant oil change and a private mechanic. I'm not sure what to do and after reading about all these other motors doing same thing I'm really scared and we are not financially able to fix this and we have a payment on it for 2 more years. It seems like all these motors are having same issue around same milage. I am not sure why something isn't being done to help us.
Sudden loss of power and ability to accelerate on the freeway, which was caused by a failure of the Engine Timing System. This is concerning since we had engine failure on our previous Hyundai ( a Sonata). This model of the Santa Fe isn't listed under that recall.

Was driving like normal all of a sudden engine started loosing power and than started hearing grinding noise. Than engine overheated than RPM died brakes failed and slowly my car stopped in incline I was able to dodge a serious collision by taking safety precaution . Than my car did not start. Turns out engines has been seized due to mechanical failures in my engine. I performed oil change regularly and coolant was perfectly filled. There was no negligence from our end as a driver. My vehicle had 98k miles which was mentioned on Hyundai warranty that it's Powertrain warranty coverage is valid for 100k miles. I was denied my warranty because they mentioned I'm not a primary owner. How does a secondary owner affect this warranty? Secondary owner did not modified the engine to be declined warranty. How did that happen I have serious concern about Hyundai engine.
Premature engine failure due to bearing. Car has oil consumption problem causing a ceased engine. Car stalled going 40 mph under a intersection, managed to pull over and car started fire and smoking. Fire Smothered itself.
An engine warning light came on. The warning was for crankshaft sensor. With a couple of days the engine stopped while I was on the freeway. Barely made it to the exit s d turned right on the street when it came to a complete stop. Had it towed to Carmax as it was the place I bought it from. They said it was the engine. Took it to Hyundai waited several weeks to find out that they won’t cover it. The car has around 130,000 miles. Hyundai service manager said thos was very similar to the other Hyundai’s that are having engine trouble. The service manager said he tried his best with Hyundai and they are not going to replace the engine.
My 2015 Santa Fe was known to lose oil between routine changes, and spontaneously increase rpms, and two mechanics were unable to find any reasons for this. While driving home from work, my engine began to knock, smoke, and within minutes seized. I was able to coast to the side of the busy highway, and had to arrange for a tow. Two mechanics stated the bearings were shot, though with routine maintenance and less than 90k miles, they could find no cause. When brought to a Hyundai dealership, they advised there was no warranty and they declined to offer any good faith assistance.
My engine failed while I was driving with no warning. No lights or system check warnings prior. That day I was driving on a road at 50mph as I was accelerating I started to hear a knocking or sputtering noise, within 6 minutes of the noise starting my engine failed. I was driving at an incline with cars behind and beside me. I lost all engine power, my gas pedal went limp, and my brakes tightened. My engine light, battery light, and oil light came on and my exhaust from the rear was Smokey. Luckily I was able to pull over with out causing an accident. I turned the vehicle off and waited for a tow. My car electronics turn on but the engine will not start. The mechanic it was brought to confirms that the engine needs to be replaced. My 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe limited only has 47,692 miles and was serviced regularly. It had an oil change and passed the NYS inspection Jan 25, 2022 and engine failed August 7, 2022. Many similar issues with other owners of this vehicle, this engine should have been recalled, Hyundai won’t tell me if I’m entitled to the extended warranty coverage from the many lawsuits they’ve had from these vehicles.
While traveling 75 mph on the freeway, the vehicle began to violently shake. At this time, a warning message appeared that said the vehicle was performing a "system check". Another message then appeared that said to pull off the road and activate the "Blue Link". By this time, I was losing power but was able to maintain control while merging over two lanes of freeway traffic before the vehicle totally died on the side of the road. Losing all power while traveling 75 mph on a freeway created a safety issue for both myself and other drivers. I brought the vehicle to the Hyundai dealership who diagnosed an engine failure due to "misfire on number 2 cylinder, piece of valve missing". The vehicle is available for inspection at the dealership where it has been for 3 months because the manufacturer says the defect is not covered under warranty and I don't have $11,000 to replace the engine.

While driving, there was a noise coming from the car on acceleration. Had been using cruise control and when canceled cruise, and accelerated- the noise became worse. Car stalled and I was able to get it to the side of the road without incident. Lucky there was no other vehicles on the road at the time. Checked the oil and level was fine and no temp issues indicated. When I tried to restart, an engine light came on the dash. Got the car home by coasting in neutral, it was only 2 blocks. Couldn't get an appt for repair for over a week. Had car towed to a repair shop and they said it was a Variable Valve Timing Solenoid. On first drive after replacing this piece- indicator light came on the dash again. Left the car where it was.
On Mothers day 2022 while driving 70 mph on I-295 in FL, my 2015 Hyundai Sante Fe 2.0 Turbo quickly reduced speed down to 38 mph without any warning. I had to quickly cross over 2 lanes of traffic to pull over before my vehicle stopped completely it was then I noticed my check engine light on. After I pull to the side I immediately place my car in park and shut off the engine. My 15 year old son asked what was going on and why did the car smell as if something was burning. This is a huge safety issue and could have caused grave damage had I not acted as quickly as I did. With the reduced speed due to engine failure another vehicle could have slammed in the back of my vehicle and or hitting another car trying to avoid a rear end collision. My car is currently at the Hyundai dealership in Jax FL. I'm realizing there is a safety recall on my vehicle as well as a lot of others. I still don't have my vehicle back and I'm waiting on Hyundai to replace my engine. Hyundai has a backlog of vehicle different models. I loved my car and wouldike it fixed in a timely manner. Hyundai made the car with issues, they have identified their issues with the recalls now they need to take ownership and repair the issues. Something has to be done about unexpected engine stalls and or failure.
Daughter was driving vehicle when began hesitating on road and losing power. She also heard knocking sound coming from engine. Concerned she would get rear ended she pulled off to side of road. No engine warning lights. Had vehicle towed to dealership where upon inspection determined total engine failure.

I am the 2nd owner of my 2015 Santa Fe Sport 2.0T, having purchased it in June 2018. I had regular oil changes, the last one being done on 1/24/22 at 134K miles. Engine started knocking after that oil change, so I was driving back to the repair shop on 1/25/22 when I was unable to accelerate and I pulled off to the side of the interstate. Some warning lights flashed briefly when the acceleration started, but I wasn't able to see which ones since I was more concerned with pulling safely off the road. Towed to the closest repair shop and they advised that my engine was seized and that Hyundai had an open recall so I needed to take my car to a Hyundai dealership. I had it towed to the dealership right away, where it said for the next 6+ weeks waiting to be inspected. They finally inspected it on 3/10/22 and submitted it to Hyundai for approval to replace the engine. Hyundai came back and asked for maintenance records, which I provided on 3/15/22. Today, 3/17/22, I was told Hyundai denied my claim because I didn't bring my car in for repair as soon as the the recall was issued. I didn't know there was a recall until this happened. The only thing I received in the mail was something about a hood latch problem, but that was a different issue. Once I found out about the recall (after my engine had already seized) I did go online to look up the details and Hyundai's recall specifically said that owners can continue driving their car. So even though I didn't know about the recall, and when I did find out about the recall it said the car could continue to be driven, Hyundai won't replace the engine. I tried to call Hyundai to appeal the decision and their message said the office is closed to do scheduled maintenance. There is no option to leave a message.

My car shut down while traveling at a normal speed on a freeway and I had to pull over as it slowed down. This was unsafe on a busy highway while I waited 3 hours to be towed. The car dealer service center stated a faulty connecting rod bearing failure caused the problem and requires a new engine to be installed. There were no warning lights or sounds prior to the problem. Regular maintenance was done including an oil change and filter within the 6month recommendation. The dealership said there was no oil and the engine seized.
The engine completely failed while driving on the highway. The check engine light appeared approximately 20 minutes prior to event. Vehicle was serviced regularly, Including at a hyundai dealership in July. Per our independent mechanic the engine seized up. The engine is available upon request.
Per the Theta Engine Recall Settlement, I had the recall work performed on my 2015 Hyundai Sante Fe on August 23, 2021. Roughly in October, the oil light faded on and off on the dashboard. I pulled into the Autozone and purchased 1 Quart of engine oil. I checked the dipstick in the parking lot and added the quart to the proper fill line of the engine dipstick. On 11/11/2021, while driving my vehicle, without any warning, the engine stopped and shut the car off in traffic. The oil light, check engine light, and service light came on then went off. I attempted 5 times to restart the engine before it would run. I took it to a Midas Auto shop where the diagnostic advised the engine failed and was damaged. I had the vehicle towed to Larry H. Miller Hyundai in Peoria, AZ 85382. The diagnostics indicated that the engine failed as was due to the fact of the Theta Class Engine Recall. The mechanic, service manager, and service advisor took notes and photographs of the valve train on the engine block. They advised the vehicle engine was damaged and needed replacement. They advised they did not find any indications of lack of maintenance. The engine was low on oil as it is apparent that the engine was more likely running hot. Hyundai Motors has denied the extended warranty claim (even though the recall updates have been completed prior to the engine failure). I have appealed within the company for the replacement of the engine but Hyundai is continuing to deny the claims. The dealership has advised other customers are being denied for the same reason just due to gaps in service records even though there are no indications of wear of the engine. Hyundai has since tried to settle the claim with me for $500.00 to release the company from any liability that the HMA failed to conform the vehicle to warranty in connection fo my concerns and history repair.
On or about October 16th 2021. After leaving a resturant I was unable to restart my car. It just would not turn over. I called a tow truck thinking It was possibly the starter. The vehicle was towed to Kia, where it was purchased. Upon inspection they(mechanics) also thought it was the starter. Being that the car is under an extended warranty, they contacted the appropriate company for the coverage. However the starter was or isn't the problem, they now believe it's the engine. Mind you I have less than 100,000 miles. I was told I would possiblly incounter a cost of 900.00 for them to determine what's wrong with the vehicle? At the time of me submitting this complaint, my car has been in the repair shop for 3 months. Can you imagine my rental expenses? I"ve read through several complaints of people expressing their concerns and complaints for this same or similar problem, It appears to me that Hyundai has a problem. I"m still without a vehicle.
Shortly after getting on the freeway the car suddenly decelerated and came to a complete stop. I was able to pull onto the shoulder just in time. The engine died and would not restart. My daughter and I were in a very dangerous situation that could have been tragic. The car was towed to a mechanic that confirmed the engine had seized and a whole new motor is needed.
On September 4, 2021 at approximately 11:30pm, my vehicle suffered a catastrophic engine failure while driving on a busy freeway in Southern California. There was no warning, only an immediate power lost and inability to accelerate, followed by a flashing check engine light and a chiming alert bell. My husband was driving and he was able to make it across 3 busy traffic lanes to the emergency lane. The sudden lost of power and the inability to accelerate created a significant danger on this busy freeway, California State Route 91. I believe we could have caused a significant accident on that freeway if we had not been able to pull over to the emergency lane in time. Since this incident, I learned through my own online research, that my vehicle was included in a class-action lawsuit which was settled on June 10, 2021. I purchased my vehicle used in late January 2021, and I was never informed of the danger the Theta II GDI engine in my vehicle posed. My engine was replaced under the Lifetime Warranty provided by the Settlement Agreement, however, I am very concerned that the hazards that this vehicle posed to my family was never revealed by the dealer I purchased it from or by Hyundai in the months following my purchase. I hope something can be done to warn other used car buyers at the time they purchase a vehicle involved in this this Class-Action Settlement of the dangers the engine poses.
I do not know to the best of my knowledge but I do know at 80,000 miles my mechanic did a full plus and coil pack change and I’m not due for an oil change for 2000 miles but for some reason my 3rd cylinder is failing and they can’t figure it out so I’m having it taken back to the dealership.

While driving home from work on a busy highway, the vehicle engine stopped without a warning. No noises no warning lights nothing. I am fortunate that I was in traffic and no one was behind me driving the normal 50 mph speed limit or I would have been severely injured. I was able to pull the car to the side of the road. The car would not turn over when pressing the ignition switch. The car was towed to a local repair shop and they thought it to be the starter, so that was replaced. They got the car to start, but it only ran with a very loud noise coming from the engine for approximately 20 minutes. The car no longer will turn over. It has now been towed again to a local Hyundai dealership and is awaiting a diagnosis. The local repair shop called again today letting us know that they just had another Hyundai Santa Fe in for the exact same issue and they have taken that car as well to the local dealership. There was no warning light, there were no loud noises from the engine, no smoke, nothing, it just stopped while I was driving it. I have had no issues with this vehicle, we have owned it for approximately 3 years and it has just over 100,000 miles on it. Doing research it appears that many others who own a 2015 Santa Fe are reporting the same problems. I will continue to research and escalate a consumer investigation into this issue.
The car stalled and reduced speed immediately from 30 mph to about 5 mph or less. it did not accelerate i had to pull over and tow to dealership. Car has a knocking noise also. this is two signs of the engine bearing and/or connecting rod bearing wear in the santa fes. Hyundai refused my claim to replace engine because the dealership could not replicate the problem. the car turned on again and drove fine according to the dealership. I do not feel safe driving the car, THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, IT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE THE CAR LIKE THIS, THE CAR COULD STALL IN THE HIGHWAY AT 70 MPH AND COULD CAUSE A CRASH HARMING MYSELF AND OTHERS. ACCORDING TO HYUNDAI WEBSITE IF CONTINUING TO DRIVE THE CAR IT COULD ALSO CAUSE A FIRE DUE TO MORE DAMAGE TO THE CONNECTING ROD. HYUNDAI NEEDS TO RECALL ALL 2015 SANTA FE VEHICLES AND REPLACE ENGINE. MY ENGINE WAS ALREADY REPLACED IN 2020 AND NOW IS HAVING PROBLEMS AGAIN.
2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited Ultimate 3.3L Vin F 114,441 miles No prior mechanical issues, pulled out on busy highway and pushed the gas pedal to merge into traffic. Upon pushing the gas pedal the car revved high rpms but would only go 5 mph. I was afraid I was going to get rear ended so quickly pulled off the road. Pulled off the road and restarted the car, the check engine light came on and the engine was shuddering and shaking. Put car in drive and there was no power took about 300 feet to get vehicle up to 30mph. Upon driving further had smell of exhaust fumes. Took the vehicle to the Courtesy Hyundai in Tampa and awaited the diagnosis on 5/22. Initial codes P0018, P2A03, and P0088 misfires on cylinders 2,4,6. Dealer said the CVVT Timing chain and tensioners were bad. I asked if I paid the $3800 if it would remedy the concerns. They told me only way to guarantee would be to put a used motor in the car. Compression was good in the engine. Service person said for $1500 more an engine was the best bet. We agreed told them to replace at $5400. Over the next few weeks we were told the engine was on order to later find out they had never ordered the engine. This happened twice, finally they said I would have to source the engine. After numerous lies, the service tech we learned was fired. The new engine quote came back at $8700. We had two separate cases with Hyundai USA the last being #18440449. I find it odd that the dealership had 50-60 Hyundai Sports awaiting replacement engines from Hyundai, yet they could never tell me what was wrong with my vehicle. Service tech of 23 years couldn't identify the issue. We removed the vehicle from the dealership on 7/31 wasting 10 weeks for no help from Hyundai. I believe Hyundai is having the same issue with the 3.3L as they are with the 2.4L Sport models.

On August 12th 2021, I was driving the engine started making a knocking/tapping sound. As I accelerated it sounded like something broke off, bounced around then shot out the bottom of my vehicle. My vehicle then started to smoke and leak oil all over the road. I pulled over and turned the engine off. We found the part that flew out of the engine, it was the connector rod. It had snapped off into two pieces and shot through the oil pan after passing through the engine causing irreparable damage. There were no warning signs, no check engine or oil lights, nothing. This happened out of the blue. Our safety as well as the safety of others were put at risk not only when the part flew out of the car and could have hit another vehicle, but it almost caught fire and it could have caused an accident had we nowhere to pull off the road, as traffic was heavy that day. This vehicle has been at the Hyundai dealership since August 13th 2021. It has been inspected and determined it in deed needs a new engine, the cause was connector rod failure.
I was driving on the highway with my 3 children (I am 9 months pregnant) when we heard a loud pop from the engine, the car gave a sudden jolt and then a loud ticking sound started. The car had a hard time accelerating as I tried to pull over to a safe location. I felt my life and my family's life was in danger. The car was taken first to a mechanic where I was informed that they had several cases with the same issue from the same vehicles recently and recommended us tow it immediately to a Hyundai dealership as it was a recall issue and it was not safe to drive. We towed it to a Hyundai dealership and they informed us that it was a rod barring failure. They informed us that there was indeed an open recall for this particular issue however it was on the Santa fe 2.4 liter models and not our 3.3 liter model. They did tell us that they tried to contact Hyundai consumer affairs since it is the same issue but that Hyundai refused to extend the recall to us. I called consumer affairs directly after and explained my concerns and situation and was told there was nothing they could do about it since there was no recall on my 3.3 liter vehicle. I was given an estimate of $9-10K as a quote to fix the issue. There were no warning lights, no prior symptoms to the failure, this simply happened unexpectedly and put my family at risk.

I had only 60,000 miles and expected to own this car another 3-5 years. ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, ENGINE STARTED TO MAKE A RATTLING SOUND. I HAD IT TOWED TO A SHOP, THEY SAID THERE WAS NO OIL IN THE CAR DESPITE THE FACT THAT WE ALWAYS HAD OUR OIL CHANGED REGULARLY. THERE WAS NO SIGN OF A LEAK. THEY HAD TO PUT THREE QUARTS IN IT JUST FOR ANYTHING TO SHOW ON THE DIPSTICK. THE SHOP THAT I TOOK IT TO DID NOT DO ENGINE REPAIR AND RECOMMENDED THAT I HAD IT TAKEN SOME PLACE TO HAVE THE ENGINE REBUILT. THEIR THEORY WAS IS THAT SOMETHING BLEW AND THAT THE OIL WAS BEING BURNED UP. IT HAPPENED SO FAST. ONE DAY I HAD A DEPENDABLE CARE THAT I LOVED. THE NEXT IT NEEDED IT'S ENGINE REPLACED. TOWED TO LOCAL MECHANIC, DIAGNOSIS WAS SEIZED ENGINE. INSPECTED ENGINE BLOCK AND NOTICED FIST SIZED HOLE IN BLOCK (SEE PHOTOS). TOWED TO DEALERSHIP, WAS INFORMED THEY HADN'T SEEN THIS BEFORE ON THIS ENGINE. I INFORMED THEM I CURRENTLY DRIVE A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA WITH 220K MILES ON IT AND HAVE BEEN DRIVING/MAINTAINING CARS FOR 30 YEARS AND I'VE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE EITHER. WAS INFORMED THAT THEY SUSPECT IMPROPER OIL MAINTENANCE. OIL AND FILTER BOTH REPLACED EVERY 5000 MILES. ALWAYS MOBILE 1 SYNTHETIC AND WIX (GOOD QUALITY FILTERS/OIL). I SUSPECT HYUNDAI HAS ENGINE RELIABILITY ISSUES. NO PRIOR ENGINE ISSUES NOTICED. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS PRIOR. NO OIL LIGHTS ON PRIOR. THE PISTON SEALS IN THE ABS MODULES'S HYDRAULIC VALVE COULD LEAK BRAKE FLUID INTO THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (EUC) . AN ELECTRICAL SHORT IN THE ABS MODULE COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE. THE SAFETY RECALL LETTER I RECEIVED 12-24-20 STATED TO CALL THE NEAREST HYUNDAI DEALER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THIS REPAIRED. WAS DRIVING TO WORK ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, GOING APPROXIMATELY 65-75MPH FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES. AS I PUSHED THE ACCELERATOR TO PREPARE FOR A LANE CHANGE, I REALIZED THAT I COULD PUT THE ACCELERATOR ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WITH NO RESPONSE. I IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THAT MY "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT APPEARED. I TRIED AGAIN UNSUCCESSFULLY, THEN TRIED THE BREAKS. THE BREAKS WERE VERY STIFF, AS IF THEIR POWER TO THE ENGINE WAS CUT OFF. I TRIED TO TURN OFF OF THE HIGHWAY ONTO THE CURB, AND I NOTICED THAT MY STEERING WHEEL WAS ALSO VERY STIFF. ALTHOUGH I COULD TURN, IT TOOK MUCH MORE STRENGTH THAN USUAL. I LET THE SPEED DECLINE NATURALLY UNTIL IT STOPPED ENTIRELY ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. WHILE STOPPED, I TRIED REPEATEDLY TO USE THE BREAKS, GAS, AND TEST THE STEERING, BUT THE SAME ISSUES WERE THERE WITH ZERO SUCCESS. ONE THING I CAN NOTE WAS THAT THE BATTERY APPEARED TO BE WORKING JUST FINE, AS MY RADIO WAS ON THROUGHOUT THIS ENTIRE TIME. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED ON UNTIL I TURNED THE CAR OFF, AND WAITED A FEW MINUTES. I TURNED THE CAR ON AFTER SOME TIME AND IT IMMEDIATELY WORKED - WITH EVERYTHING ELSE APPEARING TO FUNCTION PROPERLY. THE LIGHT AT THIS TIME WAS OFF, AND HAS NOT HAPPENED SINCE. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED THE CAR INTO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP, BUT BECAUSE THE LIGHT TURNED OFF, THEY CLAIM THAT THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO READ WHAT HAD HAPPENED DURING THIS INCIDENT. THEY GAVE THE CAR BACK TO ME WHILE OFFERING NO SUGGESTIONS, THEY DID NOT EVEN TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK AT THE ENGINE. THEY EVEN SAID THAT THEY WOULD TRADE IN THE CAR FOR RESALE - AS IF THEY WOULD LET SOMEONE ELSE TAKE THIS DEFECTIVE PRODUCT. I AM LUCKY I DIDN'T DIE, AND THIS COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE. I'VE SINCE READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIE TYPE OF ENGINE IN THIS VEHICLE THE THETA 11 GDI 2.0T , WHICH HAS BEEEN RECALLED 2011-2014 MODELS . THIS IS VERY DISHEARTENING TO HEAR THAT WITH A CAR THAT IS 3 YEARS OLD MY ENGINE IS NOW BLOWN AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT MY COST , I STILL OWE A LOT OF MONEY ON THIS CAR . WE PULLED OFF IN THE NEAREST PARKING LOT AND THE CAR DIED. DEALERSHIP HAS HAD THE CAR FOR ALMOST 2 WEEKS AND THEY HAVE ATTEMPTED TO HAVING NO IDEA WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T DIAGNOSED THE VEHICLE THEY WILL NOT PROVIDE A RENTAL PER HYUNDAI'S CORPORATE POLICY. THIS VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 45,000 MILES ON IT!!

ENGINE SEIZED ON THE VEHICLE AFTER 32000 MILES. SERVICE DEPARTMENT CLAIMS THIS IS DUE TO POOR MAINTENANCE DESPITE ADEQUATE OIL CHANGES OCCUR DURING WITH THE MOST RECENT 1 DAY PRIOR TO VEHICLE BREAK DOWN. WE HAD DROVE THE VEHICLE LESS THAN 20 MILES FOLLOWING THE OIL CHANGE AND WAS LEAVING FOR A FAMILY VACATION AND WAS LESS THAN A MILE FROM OUR HOUSE WHEN IT BROOKE DOWN ON A CITY STREET WHEN THE BREAKDOWN OCCURRED. AFTER TOWING THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP IT WAS FOUND TO HAVE A SEIZED ENGINE.

THE CAR STALLS AND COMPLETELY LOSES POWER. WE JUST HIT THE 62K MILE MARK. WHEN IT LOSES POWER EVEN THE BRAKES DO NOT WORK. WHEN YOU STOP AT A STOP LIGHT OR STOP SIGN THE CAR JERKS. THE EXHAUST IS SMOKING BADLY. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION AND WITH MORE THAN ONE DRIVER.

ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, CALL LOST POWER AND WOULD NOT OPERATE IN A NORMAL FASHION. RPM GAUGE WAS HIGHLY ERRATIC AND PUSHING THE ACCELERATOR TO THE FLOOR DID NOT RESULT IN INCREASED SPEED. THE FIRST TIME I TOOK IT IN, THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH IT. THE 2ND TIME I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED, AS IT WOULD NO LONGER START. THAT TIME THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE CAUSED BY A SPARK PLUG.
