The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH and attempting to depress the accelerator pedal, the vehicle decelerated and failed to respond as intended. The contact coasted to the right side of the road, turned off the vehicle, and the vehicle failed to start. Neither an independent mechanic nor a dealer was contacted. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed. The contact was informed that the vehicle was scheduled to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on four occasions. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

My engine failed at 113,000 miles. It just sounded like a diesel truck when I started it one day. There were no warning messages at all. It did not have any power above 45 mph. I took it to a Hyundai dealer and showed him the extended warranty letter I received from Hyundai. The letter said my specific engine should qualify for an extended warranty. However, the dealer (Castle Hyundai of Downers Grove, IL) said because my engine failed due to timing chain failure and not connecting rod failure, Hyundai would not honor the extended warranty. That infuriates me! Hyundai should honor the extended warranty because their engine failed and it wasn't my fault. They know they have an engine problem but because my engine didn't fail exactly the way they projected it would fail, I'm [XXX] of using my car. It also meant I had to purchase a new car which obviously wasn't a Hyundai. I hope you can push Hyundai to provide me financial relief or at least expand the engine warranty for others. My 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe lost all power, shutting off and stopping abruptly in the middle of the road with no warning lights or “limp mode” being set off requiring my partner and I to push it into someone’s driveway with our two children in the car to get them to safety. We took the vehicle to a mechanic shop where we were told that to engine was seized and needed to be fully replaced with an initial quote starting at 8 thousand dollars for a replacement engine. I contacted my local Hyundai dealership and was told over the phone that the vehicle would be covered under Hyundai service bulletin TXX8 that was issued last year due to ongoing issues with this engine (3.3l V6 Lambda II). We paid to have the vehicle towed to this dealership only to be told that the warranty would not be honored due to a lack of maintenance records. I was able to provide Hyundai with all maintenance records from my ownership as well as records on the CarFax report. They rejected the claim again stating that due to a lack of records not from my ownership they won’t cover it. After looking at the records I had access to again in critical detail I was able to find records that Hyundai missed, but they are unwilling to reevaluate the claim without me providing what they call additional records. I have contacted Hyundai, to try and resolve the issue and have gotten no resolution. The Prior Authorization team has stated that I have “adequate records” but still insist on denying the claim. The dealer has quoted me $12,000 for the repair that the warranty should be covering due to the engine not being manufactured in full anymore due to the issues that have come from it. The dealership (and private mechanic) would have to order individual pieces of the engine to build it themselves on site. If this engine is a big enough problem that Hyundai cannot provide a full engine replacement at market value then it should not be operating on the road at all.

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where the same diagnostic information was provided. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 145,322. The VIN was not available.

This is my 2nd engine on my 2016 Santa Fe Sport. My car has 190,000 miles and had a catastrophic engine failure, it’s been at the dealership for 2 months. Hyundai said my lifetime warranty on my engine is not covered cause I had a misfire in the #4 cylinder with less than 2,000 miles on the spark plugs. Hyundai warranty department only spoke to the dealership directly and had me speak to a case manager (which did nothing, they never even talked to the warranty department only the dealership) So in December I dropped my car off, it took over 2 weeks to take pictures and send them in to Hyundai warranty department, a week later Hyundai asked the dealership to further take the engine apart and get pictures of the rocker’s. The dealership is down to 2 technicians and said they will get to it when they can (remember I’m without a car and waiting for approval for my engine so they can get me in a rental car while my engine gets replaced). Over 3 week later the dealership finally sends the pictures in of the rocker’s, I know cause I called and asked the dealership. I then asked why does the warranty department need pictures of the rockers for my engine failure (misfire in 4th cylinder) and they said to check for sludge. They also pointed out my engine isn’t bad and don’t have sludge so the warranty department should approve my engine replacement. A week later my case manager called and said that they will only approve 50% and I said NO there a lifetime warranty and I’m the original owner, so they went up to 65%. I feel betrayed by the dealership, case manager and Hyundai warranty department for NOT honoring the engine replacement knowing there’s a class action law suit due for failing rod bearings which they said wasn’t the issue. How would they know? The rod bearings are on the bottom of the motor and if they took it apart they would see THAT WAS the cause, but they say they don’t warranty misfire’s yet tens of thousands of Hyundai buyers are having same problems. While driving down the highway at 65mph my 2016 Santafe Sport experienced engine failure. We sat on the side of the highway, next to an on ramp with high traffic beside a cement wall. When the tow truck arrived the driver was nearly ran over! There was no way to get the car to a safer location. After being towed to the dealership they said the engine failure would be submitted under warranty due to an issue with the connection rod bearing damage causing the engine to fail. It was denied because I was not the initial owner. A week later I received information about a class action suit against Hyundai for this very problem. As part of the suit they had extended the warranty. The dealership resubmitted my information and it was turned down again, this time for high mileage. Several months later the dealership wanted my car removed from their property, I asked them to submit it again. This time turned down because the KSDS was not updated prior to the engine failure. I now have a like new vehicle that I owe $9,000 on with a known defect that was never corrected because the required KSDS update was listed as a service campaign rather than a recall and so went unnoticed by the dealership I bought it from, or the NY inspection centers during my annual inspection and unknown to myself because when I checked for recalls there were none. Recently I found a Hyundai best practice document that states the KSDS update is no longer a prerequisite. I had my car towed once again to the dealership, where it was again denied for not having the update done prior to engine failure. Hyundai customer service says they can’t help change the denial even though the company is at fault for producing a bad product.

The contact's husband owns a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle failed to accelerate upon depression of the accelerator pedal. The check engine warning light appeared on the instrument panel during the failure. Despite the vehicle operating in LIMP Mode, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where an oil change was performed. The mechanic warned after the service was performed that there may be an ongoing failure with the engine. Several days later, the contact stated that while in stop and go traffic, the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where a diagnostic test was performed; and the contact was informed that the failure might be related to the cam shaft. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer and informed that the failure was probably related to the high-pressure fuel pump. The high-pressure fuel pump was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The contact was then informed by the dealer that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle remained with the dealer unrepaired. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

Car started to present problems at around 100k miles when it would start to hard shift any time it shifted in to 2nd gear. On several occasions it would fail to accelerate beyond 25 mph one of these instances happened while driving at speed on the interstate where pressing the gas pedal to the floor did not accelerate the car. Resently the engine would not turn over instead all of the display and indicator lights would flicker on and off rapidly. In all of these instances the car never through any codes with the exception of one time i May 2024 and were inconsistent enough that it was difficult to replicate issues when brought in for inspection. All of the above symptoms were alleviated by adding about a quart of oil every 1,000 miles or so. Again when asking about these issues the repair shops could never give a reason for why it was going through so much oil.

Four weeks ago, I noticed my 2016 Santa Fe was not blowing any heated air into the cabin. A/C would come out fine, but room temperature air at best even when thermostat set to max. I took it in for diagnosis at a local mechanic who informed me that coolant was leaking out of the engine block and into the exhaust. I took the car to the dealership who informed me that the engline block itself had somehow gotten a tear in its side. No telling how the damage occurred, yet the warranty company (Costguard) in acquisition of my powertrain policy rejected the claim because (without ever personally inspecting the vehicle) there "was no discrepency as to how the damage occurred." Every mechanic at the dealership who has seen my car disputes their answer. I have been up to date on all maintenance on my vehicle throughout my ownership and have receipts, but cannot add them as they are all in my glovebox and the car is still at the shop. While I find it personally ridiculous that a warranty company would deny this, it is important for me as well to add to the list of engine complaints about this car. Likely the damage to the engine block has also been the cause of reduced mileage I have experienced lately.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Engine failure due to oil consumption How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Car attempted to die on a highway, this could have been dangerous had I been in the outside 'fast' lane when it struggled. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, the dealer has confirmed the engine needs a full replacement Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No, only the dealers service center has inspected the vehicle Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes. There was a blink engine light shortly before the car engine died. However, there was no indication the oil was low in the engine. The oil light did not come on.

Oct 17, 2024

I purchased this vehicle less than a year ago from a dealership, used. I noticed the oil consumption after the first few months was unreasonably high. I have to keep a large jug of oil in my car and add the oil at least every two weeks or so depending on the miles I drive. I noticed other Hyundai owners complain of the same issue and some being resolved. However, my VIN is showing no open recalls at the moment.

Oct 16, 2024

Engine has serious recall that I was not made aware of during purchase. My car has been burning oil and the engine has been on. I've taken out to several local mechanics who said "these model Hyundai's burn oil once they are over 100,000 miles" and that I would just need more frequent oil changes. I was also told the engine light was either an old code being thrown, or the pump valve, but nothing to worry about because it really only effects gas milage. My engine went out and I had to get it towed to another mechanic, who upon seeing the car, knew it had an engine recall and could hear a distinctive knock in the engine due to a failing rod bearing. Upon Hyundai's request, we towed it to a dealership to have them inspect it. They agree it's the engine that's bad, but since a "knock sensor" was never installed by the previous owner, they say they are not liable to cover the repair, and that since the recall is "public knowledge", it was my responsibility to find out. If you go onto the NHTSA.gov website, and type in my VIN number, the information says "0 unrepaired recalls", therefore making it impossible for me to have known about the recall without Hyundai letting me know, which they didn't.

Oct 1, 2024 Fire

Driving on a slight upgrade, lost power and smoke started to come out of the vents and from under the hood. Had no brakes and by the time we were able to drift to a stop, the engine compartment was on fire. There was no warning lights. Witnesses saw fire under the car while we were coming to a stop. The car and all contents were totally consumed. Following some research on NHTSA vin decoder we found that this car has the same engine (GDI THETA II) that has been involved in many fires and is involved in class action suits. Even though this car has the same engine, it was never recalled. That may indicate that there are other cars out there that may have the same problem but have not been informed.

Engine shuts off and slows down while driving.

Aug 19, 2024

We were driving through our neighborhood at about 25 mph and we heard a slight knocking noise and then the engine shut off, no warnings or lights, just engine failure. The electronics worked, but car wouldn’t start. Had it towed to a local mechanic where he said the engine is seized. We were thankful this happened at a low speed in a safe place, can’t imagine how awful it would have been if we’d been going 75 mph down the 4 lane interstate. Of note, we have always kept the vehicle current on oil changes/maintenance. Prior to this, the car drove great! Never had any issues that would point to impending trouble.

Aug 16, 2024

Was driving on a 5 hour car ride at 5pm on August 16th and was going up a hill, the vehicle quickly lost all power and the engine light lit. I was able to pull the car to the side of the road with the momentum that the car already had, but was not able to get the car to a safe space (its about 6 inches from an exit ramp lane), as the car would not drive. Once I got the car to the side of the road, I checked the engine and did not see any excessive heating or anything out of the ordinary. I tried to restart the car and the check engine light is lit and the battery system for the car turns on but the car will not start or try to turn over the engine. The car is currently sitting on the side of the road. My wife and my dog were in the car and we had to quickly move to a safer place away from the 70 MPH traffic. Calling a tow truck tomorrow to take it to a dealership. It was a little scary that the engine power cut out like that without giving an engine light notice in advance or giving time for me to navigate to a more safe space to park it.

Jul 26, 2024

Vehicle was driven on a highway approximately 45-50 mph when a loud knocking sound occured. The vehicle began to shake erratically and a bunch of lights displayed. I pulled over at a safety point and turned the vehicle off to inspect it. A large amount of smoke poured from under the hood. The vehicle sat for about 45 minutes to cool down before I attempted to start it again. The engine continued to make a loud knocking sound and kept stalling. At the given time of engine failure, I was driving on a fairly busy highway with my two toddlers where we were forced in a dangerous situation to be struck by a vehicle. Hours later, I went back to start the vehicle where I was able to get it started and drive approximately 15 mph to a safer area for the vehicle to be parked. The vehicle has been at the Hyundai Bowser Chippewa location in Beaver Falls, PA. I was denied for any assistance through Hyundai and the BBB-Hyundai due to 3 open recalls, mainly the engine knock system not being updated. All issues and diagnostics were conducted at the dealership where the vehicle is being stored. No police report has been filed, nor was an insurance claim conducted. No lights or warnings came about until the engine started to noticably fail. I didn't receive any notifications from Hyundai regarding recalls, and nothing is displayed on the NHTSA site.

Jul 16, 2024

On July 3, 2024 my husband was driving our 2016 Santa Fe with a v6 engine on a highway. He was coasting down a hill going approximately 65mph when he heard a loud bang and saw something shoot off to the left of the vehicle. When he tried to brake, he realized the car had shut off and he did not have automatic steering or breaks. He managed to get the car safely pulled off the highway by using all his weight to stand on the brakes and turn the car. The car did not start up again. When we got the car towed home, we were looked under the hood and found that the engine had shot a rod. We found pieces of the engine/rod along the bottom of the engine bay. We called local mechanics as well as Hyundai service center and got quotes for repair ranging from $9-20k. The car was purchased in July of 2023, the engine had 97k miles on it, with 8k miles being put on from July 2023-July 2024. The vehicle passed PA state inspection on June 2, 2024 by the dealership’s service center.

Jun 12, 2024

The vehicle began making a knocking sound upon starting. I contacted the local dealership for a service appointment and learned that they were out a couple of months on their appointment schedule. A day or two later, my vehicle shut off while driving, I was fortunate to have enough momentum to pull of the road safely. Upon having it towed to a local mechanic, I learned that the engine seized and needed to be replaced. I contacted Hyundai and they have scheduled me for an appointment next week. Keeping my fingers crossed they will do right by me since I have always had the vehicle serviced at their Hyundai dealership. The car has approximately 118,300 miles on it.

Jun 8, 2024

Car started making noise after the check engine light came on. Check engine light was on for just a few days then by the third/fourth day the car starting making noise, turned off on me a few times then just died. We replaced a few sensors and the battery and starter. Two mechanics have told me the engine is locked and needs to be replaced.

Jun 7, 2024

Was driving on the highway going about 65mph when the engine just lost power. Pressing the accelerator and there was nothing happening. Had the car towed home. And then to a mechanic who told me the rod was bent. I’ve always kept up on oil changes and maintenance. I just had an oil change less than a month prior. There were no warning signs leading up to this incident.

Jun 5, 2024

On May 23, 2023 Was inspected for an oil leak and was informed the oil was leaking from the drain bolt (oil pan was cracked), valve cover was leaking. Was replaced with a Pan assembly-engine oil, gasket-rocker cover (with GDI High Pressure Pump gasket), and gasket- fuel pump. . However on oil leak continued and cause massive engine failure. Turned it in 5/26/2024 Had to replace engine.

May 17, 2024

On 5/15, I was entering the highway when the vehicle refused to accelerate. I pushed the gas pedal all the way to the floor, and the vehicle did not respond. I checked to see if it had stalled, but the engine was still running. I watched the rpm meter as I pushed the accelerator, and noticed that the rpm’s stayed at 1.5 the entire time. I pulled over to the shoulder and turned off the vehicle as I was afraid of causing an accident as I was not at highway speed at the time. I turned the vehicle back on and when it was safe, attempted to reenter the highway. The vehicle responded appropriately. The check engine light had come on 2 days prior to this (5/13) and I was in the process of trying to make an appointment to get it fixed. My husband ran the engine code (P0014 and P0024). The check engine light had turned off upon restarting the vehicle but turned back on about 3 minutes after resuming driving. I took the vehicle to a mechanic to have it looked at, and they noticed that the engine had lost 4 quarts of oil. There had been no oil leakage noted at any time. They added 3 quarts of oil to the engine and noticed that the knocking sounds remained. Their determination was that the car was pretty much totaled. There were no indicator lights on the dashboard to notify me that there was low oil at any time. The only indicator that showed was the check engine light 2 days before.

Around three weeks ago, we start listening to a knocking noise in the engine. As soon as we heard this noise, we took it to a mechanic near our home and the mechanic told us that there was an internal problem with the engine and we needed to take it to an official Hyundai dealership to solve this problem. Moreover, they told me this is a common problem in Hyundai's cars and the dealership would do it for free. When I took it to the dealership, they told me that I had to replace the chain timing, tensioners, CVV, and many other stuff needed (I'm sending the receipt attached, see "car report 2024.pdf"). It was going to take 10 hours of work. Importantly, this was not covered by the Hyundai warranty or recalls. I bought the car 3 years ago, and both the previous owner and I did the year service to the car. I'm sending all the receipts and CARFAX of the services. Best regards, [XXX] . 6 months ago my rod bearing broke in my engine, and I needed a new engine. From the engine recall. With a broken rod bearing you get an oil consumption problem. Oil consumption ruing your cat converter. But they aren’t telling anyone that. 6,000 miles after my new engine, my catalac converter broke. These cars are dangerous. They’re not telling anyone that this is the next problem. They just put you back on the road. Not to mention bad for the environment!

Engine light came on while driving and vehicle began to malfunction with bogging and little power to move the vehicle properly. Vehicle was towed to Hyundai dealership for diagnostics. Determining that there is rod bearing failure in the motor. Contacted Hyundai corporate who denied warranty claim citing I did not properly maintain the vehicle per owners manual although they were provided with records of proper maintenance, however it was disregarded by Hyundai warranty people as proper maintenance. I have contacted BBB and PA Attorney General for assistance but to no avail. There are countless others with the same exact issues where Hyundai Motor America is denying warranty claims for identical mechanical motor issues.

-Premature complete engine failure, at approximately 72,000 miles. -Luckily, was able to get vehicle to manufacturer dealership prior to complete immobilization of vehicle while on the road. -Engine “bearing” failure per dealership. Requires complete engine assembly for repair. Complete engine assembly no longer available, only manufactured for 6 years, and requires 150+ parts to be assembled at dealership for “short block”. -Dealer serviced maintenance documented at correct intervals. -Incident occurred without any warning lights, first and only symptom was a loud knock from the engine that increased in volume and and speed with increasing RPMs. -Vehicle remains at dealership, pending resolution. -Dealership states no active manufacturer recall on issue with this particular engine, but is aware of many other similar complaints and engine failure with this model of engine, 3.3L Lamba II GDI engine. Desire to add my complaint to any others as this poses a safety risk to other owners. Online research reveals an active investigation by the NHSTA and a class-action suit regarding this issue. Please help, and contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you.

Engine failed me driving 75 MPH down I-10. Completely stalled. No warning indication lights. Car did not over heat. Just shut down and never started again. I had to coast over 4 lanes of traffic, pulled off the road using my emergency flashers for a short period until those went out as well. Car did have oil and all fluids. I had to have car towed home 3 hours from home. I have had vehicle looked at and have been told engine seized up on me. I have had this vehicle not even a year and I am a single disabled woman. I have found several others have had this issue as well and have a really hard fight to get these thinks fixed. I have put a brand new motor and had the alternator checked it passed the test. Battery did not, was drained. I bought a new battery and all electronics are working and car goes into ON position with the push start but no engine life at all. No clicks, No life at all. I can hear fuel pump doing its normal things and I can do any electrical thing on inside. I have had no ride, no sleep at night, anxiety attacks over my car just stalling out now being told engine seized up 2016 Santa Fe Sport 2.0 T

Sudden catastrophic engine failure with no explanation from the service department at the dealership. Service was well maintained, no oil leak, all service done via the dealership but at 102K miles, engine failed suddenly. This is the V6 3.3L engine. Hyundai has agreed to replace it but it is on back order with no ETA.

I traded in my 2020 toyota corola for this car at the used Toyota dealership. Our family is comfortable with the brand Toyota and Hyundai, as we’ve owned many and considered them to be great liable cars. So we thought the Santa Fe’s would accommodate for a growing family. Not only have we encountered an engine problem with this model, which came out of nowhere, unannounced within less than a year of owning the car, but we had 2 more issues with the other Hyundai Santa Fe’s that we purchased last year. All major engine problems. All within the years 2014-2017. The engine just blows out, or burns the oil too fast, and to be honest with you, I am not just disappointed that this has happened, but the lack of ownership for this issue that I, along with thousands of other Sante Fe owners have encountered. No recall has been made on this issue. Hyundai, you have not only disappointed us, but you’ve abandoned us on this issue. In my situation it hasn’t been one car….. it’s been 3 in a year. The financial burden this has placed on my family has left us with minimal options of advancing. I plead with you to please investigate why this is happening, so that other families don’t have to go through the hardship and turmoil this has placed on us.

I have always taken good care of my car, regular oil changes, kept coolant levels up etc. I was driving home from work when my car began to overheat, so I immediately pulled over and turned it off. Made an appointment with a mechanic, had it towed there due to overheating, and found out my engine was blown completely. No prior issues.

Engine seized at 116000 miles on one of the busiest roads in town in below zero weather. I was nearly hit by an suv and also an Oversized Load Semi. I'm so thankful the towing guys showed up within the hour. There was no warning when this happend, no check engine light or oil light on. Two days before, on the last time it had beenbdriven I walked out to find it had started on it's own. It was Friday night, so I wasn't sure what to do yet. The vehicle was making a cl8cking sound durimg accelation on the Sunday morning the seize occurred, so I made plans to call the mechanic first thing Monday morning. It seized before I had the chance. I just lost all power to accelerate and had to pull over. The car took several minutes and many attempts to even turn off. Then never restarted again. I had thought a belt had broken, but our mechanic informed us the engine seized. Please investigate these 3.3 litre engines, they need to be recalled. We refuse to make this some other families problem, or to pay Hyundai one dime more of our money, or waste our time, energy or emotions on diagnostics and fighting them. We could not trade it in, so we lost the trade in value and had to finance our next vehicle. We are arranging this Hyundai to just be sold to a salvage yard for parts. It is otherwise useless.

I own a 2016 hyundai santa fe and today the car just slowed down and then shut off, with no warning on a bridge, it was so scary being on that bridge and the car just stopped. I get it towed to hyundai dealership and they informed me my engine possibly seized but need a diagnostic test and it will be 4 to 6 weeks due to ALL THE ENGINE PROBLEMS ON THERE SANTA FES. So I have been reading on this site and the same thing is happening to others. I hope hyundai does the right thing.

Have had car for 8 months, just hit 70,000 miles and now need to replace my timing chain kit. Will cost 1,500 to 2,000 estimated.

Dec 28, 2023

I am not sure what is wrong with my Hyundai Santa Fe 2016 because it is at the dealer at this moment waiting for a diagnostic test. I started the vehicle and heard a revving-up noise. I went to the doctor and on my way back to the house I accelerated and heard a rattling sound and the oil light, the check engine light, and the battery light all came on. The car slowed down and when I tried to accelerate again there was no acceleration power. I drove the car as far as I could go, then it stopped in the middle of a road. Thank God I was in my subdivision. I had to ask a UPS truck driver to push it to the curb. It was towed to the dealer 12/26/2023. That was the earliest appointment because it was the Christmas Holiday weekend. this is my only form of transportation. I am so glad I was not on a main street. UNKNOWN because I am waiting for the diagnostic test results. I am requesting a manufacturer's warranty because I am under 100,000 miles. I did file a claim with my insurance but haven't heard from them as yet.

Engine is consuming oil at an alarming rate. After 2000 miles, 3 quarts of oil was consumed

Nov 10, 2023

The engine has been reported as failed. It is available for inspection. The safety of the persons in the vehicle and on the road around us were at risk, specifically with the loss of acceleration and power while driving in traffic and merging. Vehicle became unsafe for use for our family to use so we towed it to be evaluated at odometer reading of 97,181. What happened: Vehicle suddenly started making knocking noise. While driving the vehicle a sudden loss of acceleration and inability to accelerate. Engine started to shut off when it had been in park and then placed into gear. Towed vehicle to be assessed by a mechanic. When assessed at a mechanic, the problem was confirmed and it was also noted that oil had been consumed and noted to be loosing oil internally and has burn on dipstick. No oil spots noted in area where car had been parked or leaking oil on engine. Mechanic assessed that there was engine failure and the engine would need to be replaced. Mechanic also ran diagnostic testing and noted to only have active codes for the tire pressure monitor system of C1212 VSS. Diagnostic health report noted to have no issues. Readiness monitors completed with no issues. Diagnostic health report available. Transported vehicle to dealership, where it was inspected and engine issue was confirmed as well as identical health diagnostic report. It was reported that this model was not part of the recall and warranty extension because it is a V6 engine and not a 4 cylinder so manufacturer would not be replacing engine. Due to being the second owners of this vehicle, we do not meet criteria to utilize the 100k mile warranty. All of this has occurred with out an engine warning light turning on the dash or service code being found when computer was interrogated.

Engine seized while driving

Nov 8, 2023

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The failure had reoccurred several times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 116,000.

The engine in my vehicle seized, prompting an inspection that unequivocally attributed the failure to a well-documented and acknowledged issue with the engine. This incident occurred while I was navigating on highway, placing my family and fellow road users in a precarious situation. The dealership's assessment reaffirmed that this recurring engine problem afflicts my vehicle model and had been thoroughly scrutinized by their experts. Remarkably, there were no warning signals such as the engine light or oil light to forewarn me of the impending engine failure. Despite having undergone a recent oil change, no apparent symptoms signaled that my engine was running perilously low on oil. Regrettably, Hyundai has chosen to decline any responsibility for replacing my engine or extending assistance. Their reasoning is grounded in my failure to procure a software update that, unbeknownst to me, was an essential requirement. Furthermore, I had received no prior communication via mail, email, or phone alerting me to the necessity of this update. It is crucial to note that this software update, while designed to enhance warning mechanisms, does not offer any guarantees against engine failure but merely serves to provide advanced notice of potential issues.

Engine threw a rod and damaged the whole engine. No warnings. Same exact issue my friends 2015 did. Her engine was replaced.

Oct 17, 2023

After crossing 90,000 miles the vehicle started to consume too much oil too quickly. After a professional analysis the mechanics found no problem. Going on 112,000 miles now and the vehicle is going through and/or burning oil much more rapidly than what one would expect

Oct 11, 2023

The vehicle will not accelerate over 30mph. I was entering the interstate on ramp and am not able to accelerate to the speed limit. The cars approaching had to slow down significantly to avoid a rear end collision. This happens every time whether I am at a stop light on a normal roadway or entering the interstate. There are never any warning lights or sensors indicating that there is a problem. I have completed all of the recalls and system updates required by the manufacturer. I have completed the oil consumption and engine cleaning multiple times and it has not helped the issue.

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the low oil pressure warning light was illuminated. The contact’s wife then drove back to the residence, and the contact added oil to the vehicle. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. Additionally, the dealer informed the contact that the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software needed to be updated. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to Hyundai Campaign Number: 966; however, the dealer informed the contact that the campaign had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

-my engine seized. It has been inspected and they agreed it was due to the known faulty engine. -my engine failed in the middle of the highway endangering my family and anyone else on the road. -the dealership confirmed that this is a recurring problem in my vehicle and has been inspected. -the engine light nor the oil light came on to alert me that was engine was out of oil. Yes I did have an up to date oil change. No other symptoms were present to indicate I had no oil left. Hyundai has refused to replace my engine or help me at all as I did not get a software update. I was never aware of this update nor had any correspondence via mail, email, or phone to tell me that I needed to get it. This update also does not stop your car from engine failure it just helps alert you that it will fail soon.

This is to update case 11541562, submitted electronically to NHTSA on 8/29/2023, 10:48:33 PM and 11537141, submitted electronically to NHTSA on 8/8/2023, 12:54:24 PM Napleton Hyundai of West Palm Beach and Hyundai Motor Services have repaired the Sanata Fe vehicle and replaced the engine along with some other repairs. At this time, we withdraw any complaints we had against Hyundai and Napleton Hyundai of West Palm Beach. The Service manager, Mike Clancy went above and beyond our expectations and we have no issues currently with the dealership. Mr. Clancy's service in the end turned out to be outstanding. The vehicle was returned to us and is currently in working condition, please close out these cases. Thank you for your time attention, and help with this matter.

Seat belt on drivers side does not retract without assistance. I took it to Hyundai and they refused to fix it while the car was under warranty. The engine started burning excessive amounts of oil around 60K miles. We changed the spark plugs and found them to be covered in oil and corroded. We changed them again and they are worse. (Recommended every 100K miles.) The engine stalled once in traffic and continues to nearly stall when driven. The car has been burning in excess of 1 quart every 1000 miles since turning 75K miles. We were never notified of the engine failure issues with our SUV. At 96K mile it became so bad we took it in to Hyundai in Perrysburg OH Taylor Hyundai. We were informed about the engine issue and they began an oil consumption test. However the technicians when instructed to add 2 1/2 quarts of oil they added 5 ruining the testing. Then they claimed that the engine was only consuming 1/2 quart however we took a picture of the dip stick prior to brining it in and the oil was as always below the "L". We were then told we had to pay for an $800 engine flushing followed by 3 more consumption tests. Even if the tests show more than 1 quart of oil burning Hyundai may still refuse to replace the failing engine under warranty.

Sep 6, 2023 Fire

We recently had the car to the local dealership for engine problems. It took over 3 months, but they finally determined that the camshaft was "bent" and they had to remove the engine to replace it, costing almost $5000. We had it back for about 3 months but didn't drive it much since my wife works remotely from home now. My son was driving it on the interstate and the engine threw a rod, spilling oil onto the exhaust, which caught on fire. He managed to pull over and get out of the car and by then another motorist had called 911. There was a firetruck at the exit he had just passed who showed up in just a few minutes and put the fire out before the fuel system caught on fire, thankfully. While I'm glad my son was uninjured, I'm still very upset by this, especially since they just worked on the engine. After some searching on the internet, I have found that this is a very common occurance for this vehicle (and other Hyundais) yet the company is not doing anything about it. I also read that there is a separate class action lawsuit for this particular engine (in addition to the one for the smaller 4 cylinder engines), but I'm afraid it will be settled too late to help us out.

Aug 30, 2023

On August 11, the car suddenly lost power/acceleration & the dashboard lit up with engine, battery, and oil lights. I coasted down the hill to our home without any power. On Monday, it started again without lights, but we called the dealer & were told it would be 4.5 weeks before they could see us & there was nothing they could do without lights on the dash. So we took it to a nearby service center. They performed an oil change & compression check & deemed everything fine. The car drove mostly fine, with an intermittent pause/hiccup at stoplights. August 26, at highway speed, the car shuddered loudly, & the engine light flashed. As I coasted to the shoulder, there was a POP sound. I parked, turned off the car, & inspected the tires. The rear passenger tire had a 3-in gash but didn't deflate. I tried turning on the car again & it just ground & jerked with the flashing engine light. I called AAA & towed it to the dealership, where it's waiting to be inspected. This is a Theta II engine & received the KSDS software recall update in 2019. My child was in the car with me. I wonder if the KSDS gave the first warning on Aug. 11 but failed to stay on to pass on the data to the service center.

Already reported Engine Failure on August 5, 2023. After 3 weeks, Dealer informs us the engine seized and is defective and was provided oil change records. Engine is approved for replacement under warranty, instead of getting a repaired car back, dealer calls and now informs the car rides "rough" after the engine replacement, and the Knock Sensor is faulty, MAP Sensor is faulty, and Fuel Pump needs to be replaced. We question why none of this showed up on the original inspection and diagnostic, no answer to that. Knock Sensor obviously never worked because the engine seized without any warning, and despite having warranty on the knock sensor we are told none of these items are under warranty. The car never exhibited any symptoms related to fuel pump issues, or knock or MAP sensor issues. When we were driving on August 5th, the car lost power and engine died without any prior warnings that anything was wrong. We never had any rough "ride", never had any problem with fuel or starting the car, the check engine light never came on to warn of any issues at all. If the parts are all bad, either it is related to the engine failure or they are defective. No Sensors worked or gave us any warning. We fear the car will fail again, and it is unknown if Hyundai will cover repairs. We asked for written statement for repairs and received nothing from the dealer, we asked that repairs be submitted to Hyundai to have cost covered and we have had no confirmation if it has been submitted. The car broke down 3+ hours from our home, we can't even go to the dealer to discuss in person. Limited to unanswered calls, voicemail, and emails - no responses insufficient communication. All we want is the car to be repaired properly and Hyundai should cover cost of repairs considering the massive failure we experienced without warning while driving with our children in the car, we could have all died and no well maintained car should fail in every aspect after only 8 years.

MPM Automotive in Port Charlotte, FL sold me this vehicle with a cracked head gasket after leading us to believe that it was fixed before we signed all documents for ownership.

I was driving my 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport and first noticed that when I stepped on the gas pedal, the car hesitated and then finally kicked in and would accelerate. I was approximately 60 miles from home when the engine totally failed. Luckily I was not on an interstate or I could have been in a severe accident and injured or died. I had the car towed to a Hyundai dealership, who determined it was a complete engine failure and the car needed a new engine. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms to indicate a problem.

Aug 23, 2023

On Tuesday, August15, 2023 while driving my daughter to graduate school in Tallahassee Florida from Buffalo New York, my 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with approximately 84,000 miles abruptly lost accelleration on Interstate 20 in Augusta Georgia. I was fortunate that I was able to safely exit the highway without being struck by other vehicles driving at high speeds during the morning rush hour. I was able to locate and drive my vehicle to the Taylor Hyundai dealership a mile up the road at 3233 Washington Road in Augusta. Upon my arrival the service advisor asked if my car has ever has a bearing clearance test, it had not. I am thankful that they were able to squeeze me into their schedule and they were able to perform said test which my vehicle failed. I was then advised that my car would need a new engine and that the request would be sent to the Hyundai corporate office for approval. Hyundai would not provide a rental vehicle until the process is approved which I was told could take up to 12 days. I was then advised that Hyundai would reimburse me for a rental that I would have to arrange on my own. One week later, I reached out to the advisor and she has not heard anything from Hyundia corporate. I am hoping that I will not be stuck with a massive rental bill and that my car will be fixed and delivered to my daughter in Florida.

Vehicle is at 106,000 miles. Coming to a stoplight the vehicle completely shut down. Upon inspection seeing the drive belt was missing. Vehicle will not turn over, battery is fully charged no other issues. Check engine light is now flashing AFTER it shut down NOT before like NHTSA recommends..

Aug 13, 2023

I was driving home from work, no warning lights flashed. My car abruptly stopped and my engine started misfiring and making loud noises. After the experience the engine light started to illuminate.

Aug 8, 2023

8/5/23 was driving on turnpike when 2016 Santa Fe lost complete power without warning. Was barely able to pull over to the side of the road and the car completely died. Was in the car with 3 small children all under the age of 7 and stuck for over 2 hours waiting for a tow no air conditioning and no safe place to wait on the side of the turnpike with barely enough shoulder space for the car. Had car towed to Napleton Hyundai in West Palm Beach. We have unfortunately had this happen before on our Hyundai Sonata, similar circumstances car lost all power while driving and would not restart. The Sonata turned out to have defective engine and was replaced at a different dealership under the class action, but we have had zero communication from Napleton Hyundai regarding the Santa Fe. We have provided everything that the dealer has requested, and not received any response from Napleton. We were told if the engine seized, engine is covered up to 150K miles and they are aware of the Santa Fe defect. But, we are stranded hours from home without a car and no one at the service department has called us back or informed us what are the next steps despite repeated requests from us to find out what is going on with the Santa Fe.

Aug 8, 2023

please merge this additional information with Complaint Number: 11537141, submitted electronically to NHTSA on 8/8/2023, 12:54:24 PM earlier today. Napleton Hyundai of West Palm Beach finally confirmed moments ago that the engine on the 2016 Santa Fe is defective and did seize causing us to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in the engine shutting down and fail while we were driving with our family on the turnpike on 8/5/2023. We already submitted the requested documentation to the service department to show that we have maintained the vehicle and completed regular oil charges. We are now awaiting approval from Hyundai corporate to allow the dealer to repair the defective engine under warranty/per the class action. It is shocking to us that we have now had this experience with two separate Hyundai vehicles. We purchased the Santa Fe brand new and expect it to last. Our lives, the lives of our children were completely put at risk - and it is a miracle that there was no accident, no injuries, and no one died. We suffered stranded on the side of the road waiting for a tow for two hours while the vehicle reached 100 degrees with no safe place to seek refuge while tractor trailers and other cars passed us at high rates of speed; hoping that no one would hit our car and that we would survive. We hope that Hyundai will approve and complete the repairs quickly. At this time we are without a vehicle and were informed that Hyundai also has to approve a loaner or rental while the repairs are completed, we ask that Hyundai does so immediately. It is hard to believe that we had to have a near death experience for the defective engine to be addressed. At this point, we just ask that Hyundai please make the repairs quickly and grant us a loaner vehicle in the meantime.

After a recent oil change and while driving from Utah to Wyoming, the engine began sputtering and seemed to be on the verge of seizing. Fortunately, we could make it to a gas station and check the oil. The oil was so low it did not measure on the dipstick. This occurred less than 1,000 miles since the last oil change. I subsequently learned that my sister, who also owns a 2016 Santa Fe, had a similar problem, but her engine completely seized while on the freeway. The local dealership acknowledged this was a problem and managed to replace her engine at no charge. We have been unable to get our local dealership in Colorado to make such an acknowledgment. My son uses the car now for college. His local dealership in Grand Junction told him that all we can do is have them perform an oil change, drive the car, and come and see them when the engine seizes before it's due for another oil change. The implication was that they were aware of the problem, but couldn't apply for an engine replacement unless the engine had seized. This seems wrong and unsafe. My son is currently having to add oil every three weeks.

Jul 14, 2023

I posted when this happened but didn't know what it was. On 5/16/23, I was driving on highway going about 60 mph when my vehicle completely shut off with no warning. I lost all control except I could steer a little. Thank God, I was able to get off the road safely. I had no brakes and had to drift to a stop. It never started again. I had my granddaughter with me. I'm 62 years old and I've been driving since I was 16 and this is the most dangerous thing that has ever happened while driving. Please do something about these vehicles! I know people have had to have lost lives from this.

Jul 12, 2023

The engine completely gave out all of a sudden on the highway while coming home from vacation. We were stranded on the highway and had to have someone come help my husband push the car off highway to the nearest convenience store. The car would not take a jump so we paid $427 to have it towed from Bay St. Louis, MS to Kenner, LA to our reputable mechanic to find out the problem. Per our mechanic the engine has completely gone out. This car is not even 10 years old, is well maintained, gets regular oil changes and only has about 87 or 88K miles on it. It has not been inspected by anyone other than our mechanic. There were no warning signs at all on the car prior to this or when it killed and died. Completely killed. We have called Corporate Hyundai office and they gave me a case number of [XXX] and said I would have to deal with the Hyundai of Metairie location and it would be 3 weeks before they could even inspect the vehicle after I incurred another towing charge. I did call the Service Dept. and left a message for Mr. David Porter to call me but he has not called back. I cannot believe a car does not last more than 10 years and at least $125,000 miles. Therefore, I would like to report a problem so this does not happen to anyone else and recoup some of my expense costs as my car is valued at like $13,500 if it was running and only a 1,000 if not running. A refurbished engine is anywhere from a $3500 to $4800 plus the cost of a warranty and labor. I have read there were some engine complaints on Hyundai and there is a pending investigation. My 2016 Santa Fe engine spun a rod bearing at 130,900 miles. Took to dealership and they diagnosed it and refused any warranty.

Jul 2, 2023

On the morning of June 26, I dropped my daughter off at camp. Not far from the house, the engine light begins blinking with no warning. I pull over to look under the hood; there was no smoke and the oil level and color looked ok. I was able to get back home but on the way began to lose acceleration. This would have been much worse if I was on the highway traveling at a higher speed as opposed to a residential area. Later, I was able to tow it to an independent service center who said the code for repair is P1326 for a knock sensor. In the mechanic’s research of the code, he said this is an issue for a Hyundai certified mechanic. I too did some research and saw all the Hyundai owners with the exact same issue. I called all the Hyundai auto shops in my area and none of them have appointments just to look at the car until the end of July. Now I am stuck with an immobile car that I just purchased in January and was told I’m not entitled to a loaner or rental because the vehicle isn’t being repaired yet.

Jun 22, 2023

The car was being driven by our daughter south on Interstate 75 in Florida when the engine seized. It just froze. All power was lost while in the middle lane. Our daughter had to glide into the shoulder using only the momentum of the vehicle and carefully avoid traffic. The car was towed to our local mechanic who found nothing wrong with the battery, starter, alternator or oil. The oil was in fact checked prior to the trip that day. I called our local Hyundai dealer who stated that this was a "known problem". He also added that the engine would probably have to be replaced and he had "10 cars in front of mine that needed engine replacements." We are still waiting for Hyundai Corporate to agree to the repair. The vehicle only has 47,000 miles on it and has the balance of the drive train warranty. We are without a car and are currently renting a vehicle so that we can have transportation. I have no idea why this vehicle and others like it have not been recalled. This is an extremely dangerous problem with these cars. The driver, our daughter , could have been in a dangerous accident.

Jun 21, 2023

On July 26, 2021, I purchased a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe SE. I purchased the vehicle with 90,168 miles on it, a current inspection, and a 3,000 bumper-to-bumper warranty. It has a 6 cylinder 3.3L engine. Since then, I’ve put 38,266 miles on it, and it’s ran without a problem. I’ve done all preventative maintenance, made my oil changes mostly around when needed in accordance with mechanics, and overall maintained the car as per recommended. On March 25, 2023, I was driving to work, and I felt a sudden loss of acceleration. I heard a knocking that I hadn’t heard before, yet no lights came on. No check engine light, no oil pressure light. My dashboard was not indicative of any problem. I ended up getting it towed to my personal mechanic, who was able to tell me that although the engine hasn’t seized up yet, it was surely not far from it. I was also informed that it was nearly empty. Now, I’ve had oil changes before and at no point has any mechanic, including those at my Hyundai dealership ever told me that I was short on oil. I had no puddles anywhere, at home or at work. I’ve had no smoke emissions from the vehicle to indicate that it was burning oil. To this day…I don’t know where 5 quarts of oil went out of my engine in two weeks. It is my belief that the only way this amount of oil could just vanish out of thin air is a glaring engine defect leading to near-catastrophic engine failure.

Jun 20, 2023

As I was driving home from work at night on May 4, my engine suddenly started making noises, then the engine light started flashing and the engine stopped working and I had to coast to the side of the road. I had to get it towed back to my residence late at night. I had an independent mechanic verify the catastrophic engine failure. To date the vehicle has not been repaired due to the high cost and unavailable replacement engines.

Jun 16, 2023

I was driving and all of a sudden my car quit sounded like a belt broke so I coasted to Thackers Repair and he told me a rod went right through the side of the engine so I would need a new engine. I had my oil changed every 3000 miles there was no reason for this, and I did not receive any recalls.

Jun 15, 2023

Engine oil consumption is outrageous. I am having to add oil every 200-300 miles. Just had an oil change in march and have had to add oil twice. There is a recall on the 2013-2015 models for the Santa Fe and 2011-2019 for the Santa Fe sport but the 2016 model that I have is not included in this recall. The recall is specifically for engine oil consumption issues which is exactly what I am having but Hyundai wont issue a recall for the 2016 model unless it is the sport. Very frustrated and potentially going to have to spend thousands of dollars for a new motor since mine is starting to have issues related to excessive oil consumption.

Jun 12, 2023

I left my house and vehicle was perfectly fine. NEVER any warning lights since I owned the vehicle. It was not due for an oil change. I was traveling about 60 mph and after about 5 miles, vehicle just stopped running. At that point, I looked at dash and all the lights were on and vehicle was completely unresponsive. No steering, brakes, nothing. I was able to drift off of road and that was it. Tried one time to restart it and nothing. Had it towed to hyundai dealer and first they said it was the starter and today, after being there for a month, they said engine had seized.

Car lost power/pressure will not accelerate and has an engine knock

May 22, 2023

While driving my Santa Fe sport I have an issue with loss of power when accelerating. I was getting on the freeway and attempting to merge with freeway traffic. When I was pressing the gas to accelerate the car the RPM's rose but my speed would not. I had to pull off as my vehicle could not get up to speed. It has happened twice now and only when trying to get on the freeway. No warning lamps. It is terrifying and dangerous. My Santa Fe engine was replaced around 84,000 for the failed engine issue it has about 134,000 (50,000 on new engine) now. I am concerned that this engine is possibly defective as well. My MPG has declined and now this issue.

May 10, 2023

2016 Sante fe and this is not the first engine I seen go back I seen 2011 ,2012 ….. and this one 2016 happen to me. Had oil oil change done have record of it but no sign engine just blow

May 6, 2023

This is an ongoing SAFETY ISSUE. We purchased this 2016 Hyundai SantaFe Sport used in July 07, 2022 with 98493 miles on speedometer. 30 days give or take after purchasing I checked the oil and no oil was showing on the dip stick even though the dealer we purchased the car from had changed the oil prior to selling the car. I had to add 3 1/2 quarts of oil to show on the dip stick to the first mark. I then started checking oil frequently and to date am using oil at a rate of approx. 1 quart of oil every 256 miles. On 1/19/2023 I went to my local Hyundai dealer (Jenkins Hyundai) in Bridgeport WV and informed them of the problem. The Service Writer checked the car and offered to run an Oil Consumption Survey for 1,200 to verify oil usages. On 2/23/2023 I checked the oil and found it just touching the dip stick, notified the Dealer and they said to being it in so they could add the oil during the Test. Dealership added 2.06 quarts of oil and INFORMED ME THAT HYUNDAI DENIED PA REQUEST GIVEN THAT THE VEHICLE OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY. Hyundai dealer would not continue with the oil test as Hyundai Corporate wouldn't pay for labor and parts. As reported in social media, TV news, newsprint, etc. Hyundai and Kia have millions of engines with oil consumption safety issues that are catching fire, blowing engines, stranding owner/drivers in the middle of the highway, and the list goes on. The trade-in and resale value of Hyundai/Kia vehicles has diminished/reduced in value to................ I and millions of HYUNDAI/KIA owners/drivers are asking for the NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADM. (NHTSA) to please investigate and issue a RECALL for all HYUNDAI/KIA products with an oil consumption problem. Thank You.

Apr 30, 2023

The engine in the vehicle is a DGI engine which Hyundai has had problems with in other vehicles. The bearings on the engine are damaged and the engine is failing. It can no longer be driven because the engine could fail as it is being driven.

Apr 30, 2023

Car began to misfire. Took it to the dealership and found that it didn't have any oil in it even I just had the oil changed less than 2,000 miles before. The timing was out and the valves were bent causing the misfiring. All of this is because it was burning oil without any indication or warning. This engine has less than 100,000 miles and Hyundai won't claim this on warranty even though they have a 100,000 mile warranty on there vehicles.

Mar 21, 2023

2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is using excessive oil. Three days after getting a fresh oil change, I have to add oil to my vehicle. It continually has a fire burning smell. I've taken to a certified Hyundai facility; however, I'm always turned around and told you'll have to replace your engine soon.

Feb 20, 2023

On feb 18 2023 headed southbound on i75 I had my cruise control set at 70 and was cruiseing when I heard a loud hiss and seen smoke come from under the hood, I decreased speed and heard a loud bang and more smoke, when the vehicle stopped I stepped out and found all the oil from the engine on the ground under the car. After having it towed I looked under the car and found a large hole in the engine block.

Jan 24, 2023

My engine exploded while traveling on the interstate. Apparently a rod failed and blew a hole through the engine and though the oil pan.

My car has never had any real problems the whole 2 years I’ve had it, until one day suddenly it started making a minor sounding knocking noise and as I was driving it in the same day trying to get home the sound got worse and worse and then it stopped. Oil light came on and it was smoking only for a minute. A rod had come out from the bottom of the motor and knocked all my oil out . I’ve been told it automatically needs a new motor but costs $10,000! I know I am not the only person who has had a problem with a Hyundai motor.

Jan 18, 2023

Similar to the other Hyundai issues the car was driving just fine down the road and coming through to an intersection lost all power suddenly. Similar thing happened with my Sonata with the connecting rod failure. Happened coming into a busy intersection that drops from 65 mph to 35 mph and is also an intersection lots of tractor trailors and garbarge trucks are drving through which could have resulted in a very bad accident. Took the vehicle to manufacturer and they are refusing to replace it even with the class action lawsuit settlement.

My wife and I were driving home from a road trip when all of a sudden the engine starts making a weird noise. No lights were on the dash and I was 5 min from a family members, so we drove there. We checked our oil and realized that there was none in the engine. My car only had 120,000 on it and we've taken it to the dealership for all oil changes and have purchased every recommended package to keep the car in tip top shape. The dealer service center said they had three cars in right now trying to get new engines.

I was at a stop light and turned right onto the road. As I was turning, the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree. And then the car stopped running. I was able to pull into a parking lot NOTE: THIS IS THE 2nd ENGINE THAT HAS FAILED ON MY CAR. Additionally, I’ve just learned there was a recall and I was never informed of it prior to today.

Engine was using oil. Then dropped all engine oil, made noise then locked up.

The engine control module (CPU) failed and at first the car experienced random warning lights thatwhen placed on diagnostic computer, no codes were noted. the next issue was a strong gasoline smell in the cabin. the cpu read this as a faulty fuel pressure regulator. when a second code pull was done it was reported as evaporator canister failure requires changing. The problem was in fact a leaking fuel injector rail and two injectors with defective improperly seated "O" rings. Explainig the gas smell and poor milage. "Ms. G" owns the 2016 santa fe sport with 2.0 GDI motor. There are about 80K miles The intermittent warning lights became and issue during the annual inspection/tag renewal. the DMV inspector saw the traction control, ABS, incline parking brake light and the service engine soon warnings intending to fail the car after the problemwas explained he connected his code reader, and found no codes. About April of 2022, a recal notice was recieved noting especially the 2,0 GDI MOTOR. I explained everything to the Huyndai rep. who informed me that the recall was directly related to the matters we discussed. When i described the final episode where the motor simply shut off. I explained it was towed to my shop ,again placed ot the full spectrum scanner / computer. At this time a complete systems diagnostic was preformed, ignition on - motor not running, including a complete sensor check. It was during this portion of the testing that I noticed that asensor was not reporting any data, or the existance of an oil pressure sensor. Now the ignition switch was then turned on/off the designated number of times and the car was started and a definite knock was detected. Ms. G is by no means uninformed regarding automobiles her parents restored several vintage Jags, And a 1966 330GTS Ferrari. The point being had she had any warning the vehicle was low on oil she would have checked and added as needed. In the end the Hyundai rep assured us the engine replacement was free.

On 3/20/22 I had my car towed to Jenkins Hyundai due to mechanical issues with no prior warning. So basically, I was driving home and noticed that my temperature gauge showed in the hot zone. At no time did any lights on the dashboard come on to notify that the engine was overheating. My vehicle is a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe with only 120k miles with regular maintenance performed. At no time did any dashboard lights come on to notify that there was a issues (problem one). Additionally, prior to this I had just had my vehicle serviced at the dealership at 117k miles in which a vehicle inspection was performed. Upon Hyundai looking at the mechanical issues they stated that they found RH Head Gasket leaking into combustion chamber and upon disassembly found 3 head bolts loose and pulled threads out of the block. All block threads were found to be compromised. Lucky my car was towed to the dealership because with the head bolts loose and coming out of the engine could have lead to a more serious injury. Seems that this is a mechanical defect in the engine.

The engine stopped while driving on a back road. There were no lights or warnings. The car is now at the dealership for diagnosis.

One of the cam shafts failed, also the actuator. We had purchased an extended warranty so the repair is supposed to be covered. However when the dealership submitted a pre-authorization they were asked to remove the oil plan and check for metal. They did find metal in the oil pan so they required that the engine short block be replaced in order to cover the cost. That part- the short block - is back ordered and we have been told to expect a delay of at least 3-4 months. The warranty company will only cover a rental car for 10 days so we are stuck. We have spoken to multiple mechanics and dealerships who are telling us that they are seeing this all over - V6 CVT engines failing after 65-70k miles. Obviously the Hyunday Certified Pre-Owned warranty folks also know there is a problem since they made the mechanic check for metal. This is clearly problem and we will be without a car for months. We made were up to date on all regular maintenance. HYUNDAI Case# 19971861

Car died on the highway and I had it towed to the Hyundai dealership. Smoke was pouring out of the engine. After 3 weeks the dealer said it was a bad rod bearing. The dealership sent the info to Hyundai for a replacement engine under the class action recall. Hyundai is asking for oil change records and ask the dealership to send pictures of the valve train. The dealership sent pictures and Hyundai is asking for more pictures. It seems they are trying to avoid replacing the engine which is clearly their fault. The is another lawsuit starting on Hyundai's engines due tonoil burning. Sadly this is a very comment issue with Hyundai engines and they are avoid the inevitable replacement.

Jul 30, 2022

I was driving and experienced a sudden loss of power, the engine siezed without any warning lights or symptoms and I lost brake assist, and power steering instantly. I barely managed to pull off the road. A few months ago I had an oil change and when I got it back it had a sound like new gears that aren't worn in. It appeared as though they had switched my oil pump out but they insisted nothing was performed other than a computer flash and an oil change. I believe the 2.4l i4 engine has a similar issue to the older version under recall. Had I been travelling on faster road, curve or adverse conditions this could have been much more dangerous. I had it towed to the dealership right away, they told me 3 weeks for diagnosis, it has currently still not been looked and and is sitting where the tow truck left it. There are no codes stored in the computer, there wasn't a light or warning of any kind, it was very sudden and even at low speed I struggled to stop and get out of traffic and I am trained to react to such incidents and very experienced.

My wife and I were driving on the highway with our 4 kids in a construction zone the vehicle lost power to accelerate. We went from 70MPH all the way down to 35MPH fully pressing the accelerator pedal. We were able to coast to a spot to stop in a merge lane. Turned off. The vehicle and restarted it. It worked as normal letting us accelerate only moments later to do it again. It happened on and off multiple times so we took side streets all the way home. It worked normally for a day or two then it happened again only this time an oil light appeared. It was the first time any warning light came on no check engine or service lights prior to. We pulled over to check the oil it was completely out of oil well before her service was do as we normally do oil changes before the scheduled time. We added 3 qts at the first gas station we pulled to when we checked it. The vehicle drove normally then no sputtering like it was before. Only the next day we performed a full oil change to ensure it had adequate oil. It ran great for a day and then an awful rattle came from the engine compartment. Started as a ticking more light sounding then became a louder clanking. We since parked the vehicle in the driveway but being around 91,000 miles it doesn't qualify for Manufacturers 100,000 warranty since we bought it pre-owned at a dealer in Texas. We are currently looking into what it takes to fix it at a mechanic since Hyundai won't warranty it. After some research it seems this same rattle and engine malfunction as well as oil consumption issues has happened on many Hyundai models. We weren't aware of this before but certainly feel there is a Manufacturers issue just reporting as I'm sure there is many others out there. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions from anyone.

My 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport's engine just stopped on me on Friday afternoon June 17th. I was driving home from work, going about 45mph when the engine started making a loud clicking noise & the engine light started blinking and then died , I was able to coast into a neighborhood but the car wouldn't start back up so I had to have it towed to the dealership I bought it from. The car has since been at the Dealership that I bought it from used in February 2021 with 87K miles on it. The dealerships service department says that the engine seized and that it needs to be replaced. They submitted a request to Hyundai USA to replace the engine but Hyundai USA has denied the request twice now. Unfortunately We owe $11k still as we have not even had it a year & a half. I discovered , upon some reserching that many people across the country have had or are currently experiencing the same issue with Hyundai USA. Looking for any help to solve my issue. I've been without a car since 6/17/22.The Dealership has no loaners & renting a car out of pocket is $400 - $500 per week. Please help

My car just started making a noise and the check engine light came on. The car shortly there after stalled. I tried to restart the car but it sounded terrible. I later had the car towed to a mechanic who told me of a common engine problem with Hyundai's. He recommended taking it to a dealer for further evaluation.

My 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe's engine just stopped on me on Friday afternoon June 17th. Driving home from work on a busy road my car began to make load noises & the engine light began to blink, within minutes my car died going about 45 mph, luckily I was able coast into the entrance of a neighborhood. The car would not start back up and I was stranded more than 20 miles from home. Only hours earlier I was on several major expressways and it frightens me to think of what could have happened if my engine stopped working earlier than it did. I had to have the car towed to the dealership from which I bought it. I was hoping they could fix whatever the problem was however they told me that my engine seized and it needed to be replaced. The car has since been at the Dealership, Rosen Hyundai of Algonquin, ever since. I bought the car used in February 2021 with 87K miles on it. 1) My mechanic inspected my vehicle after a rattling noise began sounding from the engine bay while accelerating and increasing RPM - The noise began shortly before the flashing check engine light turned on. My mechanic inspected the car and ran the code for the check engine light and determined that an engine connecting rod had broken and ruined the engine. Yes, it is available for inspection upon request. 2) The car experienced a loss of power and moderate vibration while driving to the mechanic after the issue. In hindsight I felt it was unsafe to have driven the car in that condition and if the mechanical issue first presented while driving at higher speeds I feel that it likely could have caused an accident or vehicle-vehicle collision 3) No. I am currently waiting for Hyundai to respond to my warranty claim. 4) No. The vehicle so far has only been inspected by my mechanic. 5) No. I began hearing the noise while running errands and within 5 minutes the check engine light came on and was flashing. I then took it to the mechanic a few days later and did not drive it between events.

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle stalled. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle after several attempts. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that there were metal shavings in the oil pan. The vehicle was then towed to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine had seized due to the metal shavings. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they would not honor the 100,000 miles warranty as he was the second owner of the vehicle. The manufacturer informed the contact that they would have honored the warranty if the mileage was under 60,000. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The failure mileage was approximately 74,400.

My car broke down on the freeway. The engine literally fell apart. Chunks of engine on the ground. I was driving at a normal rate of speed with the flow of traffic in the number 2 lane. I heard a ticking sound, turned off the radio to hear more clearly that it was not the radio. I got over as quickly as I could, then as I got into the slow lane I heard and felt a loud bang and the car died. When I got out to see what the problem was I found chunks of metal on the road. I initially thought I might have hit something, but once the tow truck driver showed up he could tell that the metal was parts of the engine. My car has been in the shop since February 12, the date of the death of my engine. I have since had to opportunity to read of about 50, and heard of hundreds of similar experiences. Hyundai is saying that since my car is out of warranty that they are not responsible, even after bringing to their attention all of the same issues with their terrible engine record. I was put in danger on a freeway as their engine literally fell apart on a busy California highway. The Hyundai Corporation has, as a “good will” act offered to cover 70% of the $18,000 repair bill! Leaving me to pay almost $6,000! I could have been seriously injured or even killed in a highway pile up if I had not acted as quickly as I did. After reading so many similar accounts, I feel strongly that Hyundai should cover 100% of the repairs and penalties of loss of vehicle and time this has cost me, and more importantly have to fix all of these vehicles that are still on the road in jeopardy of being involved in accidents due to engine failure while operating on highways. Please take action now. Thank you!

While going highway speed (75mph) I suddenly had a simultaneous check engine light, oil pressure light, and charge system light all come on. Then the engine stalled, I heard a loud bang, and then once I pulled over immediately, there was oil leaking out of the car. I was 40+ miles from home, and the nearest Hyundai dealer, and had to get towed back to the dealership. They suspected a known issue with the engine rods and once they inspected it a few days later they confirmed there was a hole in the block. It is a known issue that Hyundai has given a warranty extension on and they replaced the engine and intake manifold, per the service invoice. I believe a known potential engine failure such as this should be cause for a recall. I was going 75mph when this happened. I could have lost control of the vehicle and crashed. I also could have had my small child with me and been trying to deal with getting help on the side of a highway with a toddler who doesn’t understand to stay away from the roadway. I am thankful all was well but engine stalls when the manufacturer knows there is a defect is putting peoples’ lives at risk.

Feb 24, 2022

While driving car would slow speed unexpectedly. In addition to this issue the heat in the car stopped working. After having several system flushes and parts replaced by our mechanic we took it to the dealership for evaluation and was advised the car has complete engine failure. No check engine light ever came on!! Was advised by dealership that several complaints have been made about this particular engine but no recalls have been made. The transmission for this car was already replaced less than a month after purchasing at 66,000+ miles due to a defect, and it has been continuous issues since then. Car has been regularly maintained and despite these preventative maintenance steps the engine still failed. Hyundai I am sure is aware of these engine issues and should address them immediately. Consumer would like to add that after speaking with the salvage yard about a replacement engine the gentleman advised that he received 1000+ inquires for a engine for this make and model year.

Feb 22, 2022

Vehicle died while driving. No warning lights on at all. Dealer states that I have engine damage just by listening to it. Same issue is under recall for the santa fe sport engines but I am told that this will not be covered. This could have been an accident if I had been driving on a highway or a high traffic area.

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving at 60 MPH, an abnormal knocking noise had emitted from the engine. As the contact began to pull over, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was able to pull over and upon inspection of the vehicle saw that large pieces of the engine had scattered over the highway. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed to the dealer where a diagnostic was performed; it was later determined that the engine rod had punctured the engine block causing the engine failure. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The contact was given an estimate for the repair. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

I was driving on I-64 (eastbound), east of Richmond, VA heading home to Virginia Beach, VA. I noticed a knocking sound, intermittent at first, but becoming more prevalent and much louder. By the time I got home, the engine knocking was horrible. I looked under the car, and saw some oil around the oil pan, but there was still sufficient oil in the engine (halfway between the MIN/MAX marks on the dipstick. At no time, before during, or since was there any warning lamps lit on the dash, nor were there any codes that could be pulled indicating an issue. We had the car towed to Hall Hyundai in Chesapeake, VA (that's where we bought it), and they said the engine was full of metal and needed to be replaced. They did not say exactly what failed in the engine, but my suspicion is one of the pistons had a catastrophic failure. That was on 11 DEC. The engine has since been replaced with a remanufactured engine, but we still do not have our car back. After the initial repair, we noticed a puddle of oil on our garage floor. The car is back at the dealership and they've found 3 separate leaks so far. In reading of similar engine failures with our year range of Hyundai Santa Fe, we were fortunate. Our failure could have led to an immediate engine failure, engine fire, or worse that could have caused a serious accident since I was travelling on the highway. My concern is that Hyundai to date has dismissed this as nothing more than a fluke, and since we're beyond the terms of the warranty, not their problem. That couldn't be further from the truth. This is a BIG problem since the component that failed in our 3.3L V6 is the same component that forced a recall of their 2.4L 4-cyclinder that is common in their Santa Fe Sport model. I guarantee you that they use the same process, materials, etc. in the pistons for both, and this warrants a recall for our model/engine type just like the 2.4L recall.

Feb 8, 2022

Car is consuming oil, not leaking. Mechanic stated that some Hyundai models with similar engines are having their engines recalled. It is sometimes 2 quarts low between a 4000 mile check and the 5000 mile oil change. no light indicates that it's low.

Dec 31, 2021

On September 15, 2021 while driving the Santa Fe engine just stopped in the middle of an intersection , was able to coast to the side of the road. Vehicle has fuel, showed no issues prior. Tow truck driver attempted to jumpstart the vehicle with no avail, was towed to the local Hyundai dealer ship who had it for one week to finally tell me that the motor was blown and needs a new long motor for $15,399.00 USD. Had a second automotive shop check out the vehicle and was told the same diagnosis, motor was blown needs to be replaced, and that Hyundai no longer is manufacturing the long engine the this Santa Fe takes. I was also informed that this wasn't the first Satna Fe that they have diagnosed with this problem, both the Sport model and the same model I currently have. Neither the Hyundai dealership or the dealership where I purchased this vehicle one year ago, will help me. I am aware that Hyundai has recalled the Sport model for engine problems, but the model I own.

Dec 28, 2021

We purchased the vehicle in December 2017 with 30,753 miles and the engine seized in July 2021 with 79,896 miles. When we purchased the vehicle, we were told that Hyundai's warrantee would only be 50% of the original owner warrantee which means it would expire at 60,000 miles. We submitted a claim with Hyundai in July 2021 (Case#: 18480584) but Hyundai refused to stand behind the vehicle and we decided not to spend the estimated $12,000 to repair the engine. We sold the vehicle to a junk yard for $1,500 in August 2021. My personal opinion is that Hyundai should stand behind every vehicle they manufacture throughout the life of the vehicle. The full warrantee should transfer from owner to owner and not be shortened.

Nov 24, 2021

This vehicle is burning close to 2qts of oil within 1000 miles. There is no warning that the engine is low on oil which could cause the engine to seize at any time. Hyundai has us go through the oil consumption test and acknowledged it was a problem but denied the claim because the car was on the second owner. The third-party warranty company refused to help unless it was a total engine failure.

Oct 27, 2021

Engine failed while driving in traffic almost causing an accident. Had it towed to dealership. I was informed there was a recall for engine failure but dealership is telling me that manufacturer has denied the recall saying it has already been taken care of which is false. I also found out that when I bought the vehicle from a licensed dealer in 2018, that ownership was never transferred. The dealership is also telling me that the vehicle is still listed in another company name which is why I never received any recall information. Now I am stuck with a financed vehicle with several recalls that the dealership and manufacturer are refusing to honor.

Check engine light went on in 4/2021. Brought to local mechanic and states that it is an evaporator issue. Claims I didn't close gas cap tight enough. He reset code, closes gas cap and no check engine light. I bring it back after filling up my tank again tells me that it is because I don't close it tight enough. I oil change in 4/2021 and ask to check the code again. He claims may be a small leak and that I can drive it. I bring it back in late June early July for another oil change and light is on again. He claims small leak and it is fine to drive. I pick it up and he has car for a week to do oil change in Sept and to double check the check engine light and he says he fixed it with a new sensor for the evaporator. Light goes back on two days later. Take it to another mechanic who replaces his work and claims not good electric work. Another day of driving and check engine light is on. Bring it back to mechanic states no oil and that he puts 4.5 cans of oil into car and that the engine needs to be replaced. I am meticulous with cars. I ALWAYS get my oil changed every 3-5K miles. There is no way that I drove this car too hard or didn't have an oil leak. I park in the same spot at home and work every day - no leaks. It did not blow oil either. Please advise.

My son was on the expressway and vehicle started to slow down and would not accelerate. The check engine light came on. He pulled over and the engine died and would not restart. I had the car towed to a vehicle repair place and they found that the engine had thrown a rod and needs to be replaced. Vehicle has been well maintained and was in good shape. It was just purchased used from a dealer 05/03/21.

The problem with my purchased Hyundai is that it's not giving a warning message for the oil or over heating. The engine continues to gather a lot of gunk. Also, there is a recall on these specific models and I was notified by a class action law suit. HyundaiThetaEngineSettlement.com. The car has a chance of exploding. I did not agree with the terms of the class action suit. It was only offering compensation if I was already injured, or having to commit conspiracy with a crime of lemon law and consumer rights, and possible murder. These SUV's were built in 2016 and had enough time to be taken off the market. I purchased my vehicle last year 2020.

UPON START UP ENGINE IS VERY LOUD, CONTINUES TO BE LOUD AND DEALER SAYS IT IS JUST ENGINE NORMAL ENGINE NOISE

Jul 31, 2021

3 systems have failed within my two years of ownership. The biggest fault ....and this is what you guys need to know!!!!!!! ATTENTION NEEDED. DECEMBER 2020, I was put in total danger and others ⚠️. After months of telling the dealer that the engine was idling really rough - like a shaking - and revving weirdly at times of acceleration. They continued to tell me there was nothing wrong with it and made me seem like I was the crazy one. Fast-forwarding to December 2020, I started to now hear this metal clacking noise from the engine. Made a 3rd appointment at the dealer that was a week out - but never MADE IT. Because few days before it, I was going out to a friend's and clacking started to get even louder - as LOUD could hear in the cabin. THEN as about to get onto highway on-ramp WITH NO WARNING- no check engine light - no notice whatsoever - engine rpm spiked loudly and a very loud pop followed - and engine totally ceased. Lost total engine propulsion - vehicle rolled to a stop and then all lights and sounds started going off with check engine light NOW FLASHING. HAD TO have HYUNDAI towed to the dealer - in which "there was an engine rod bearing failure - which caused the engine to cease. Dealer took days to even get it seen and wouldn't give a loaner till deemed a fault under "warranty" which clearly was with there 10 yr - 100,000 mile warranty - which makes sense because there poorly made/crafted engine designs that involve the GDI ENGINES_ which have been known to fail prematurely - CAUSE FIRES _ and has even killed people. They aren't fixing the engine design they simply are putting the same KIND IN>>> and putting a system that detects engine knocking. THAT DOESNT FIX THE PROBLEM - and they KNOW THAT. There was no recall on my car or got anything in mail regarding engine dangers. Further Hyundai would not give me any paperwork regarding the repair besides an engine assembly - a replacement that all. I readily asked for more info and they wouldn't give it.

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated while driving 45 mph, the vehicle began to stall and then ceased. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated she was able to restart the vehicle but continued to experience the failure. The contact stated she was able to drive at a slow speed to her residence but started to smell fumes. The contact stated the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact towed the vehicle to an independent mechanic and who was unable to service the vehicle due to a fuel leak. The contact called and notified the local dealer of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,622.

My engine stalled on the highway with no warning lights or symptoms. I've owned it for 6mo. It had regular recorded maintenance and showed no issue. Then as I was driving home from work, the car seized up and jerked to a full stop at previously 65mph. Inspection by dealership revealed that my engine blew at 70,800 miles. With no warning. No symptoms. Hyundai will not pay for repairs, $9000 on top of the $14000 I still owe. This car put me in an unexpected dangerous situation!! Every other year of this make and model has been recalled. Please recall the 2016, it is not safe!

Jun 23, 2021

Drive The car on the Highway and seemed like I was losing power and a few minutes later I heard a knocking on the engine

Jun 4, 2021

vehicle stalled and locked up was not able to push breaks or turn steering dealer advised me engine was stalled and needed to be replaced, was known in my model, this was why this vehicle and year had an extended warranty unto 200K miles. The engine was replaced and the vehicle is still not running correctly. When accelerating to turn on on highway, it seems stalled and doesn't move, returning to dealer tomorrow after being w/o a vehicle 3 weeks. It is not coming up on your recall notices and am concerned this is a safety issue.

Jun 2, 2021

The car was sitting in the driveway waiting to be started up. When the car was started, there was a knocking sound from the engine. I turned the car off and checked the oil. The oil was down about 2 quarts, so I decided to change the oil since we were goin on a trip. I changed the oil and the knocking sound did not go away so we took it to a dealer. We change the oil every 5-7 thousand miles and reset the service button. The car is at the dealer and I have not heard a word from them.

Driving home from work, Car jerked me forward and stopped at 60mph. Engine promptly shut off. Turned key over and put car into neutral to get it off of the highway. Herrnstein Hyundai of Chillicothe told me that my Nu Engine had blown and i need a total replacement. No warnings or dash lights came on. Hyundai states they wont help despite the recall to be posted on June 25th.

I GOT MY ENGINE REPAIRED, BUT THE TEST DRIVE SHOWED A SENSOR FOR THE OIL VALVE? THING. HYUNDAI WAS SUPPOSED TO OVERNIGHT IT AS OF FRIDAY 4/23. MY CAR IS STILL NOT DONE. I AM NOT COMPLAINNG ABOUT THE DEALERSHIP, BUT THE PART AND HOW THEY TAKE SO LONG. MY CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP SINCE 3/20/2021. I HAVE HAD NO CAR SINCE THEN. I AM IN SALES AND A SINGLE MOM. I HAVE BEEN USING MY BOYFRIEND'S TRUCK, BUT I CANT DO THAT FOREVER. CAN YOU PLEASE LOOK INTO WHY HYUNDAI ISNT QUICK WITH DELIVERING PARTS? IM BEYOND FRUSTRATED. HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY WILL NEVER BE A COMPANY I PURCHASE FROM EVER AGAIN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP. VEHICLE IS 2016 HYUNDAI SANTA FE SPORT WITH 133,000 MILES. I HAVE DOCUMENTED PROOF OF REGULAR MAINTENANCE. VEHICLE WAS GETTING 32-33 MPG. ENGINE SUDDENLY STARTED KNOCKING AND DIED WITHIN A FEW MILES. REPAIR SHOP SAID HYUNDAI EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM 100,000 TO 120,000 FOR THIS ISSUE. MY CAR HAS 133,000 AND IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE 2011 TO 2014 RECALLS. ENGINE WAS REPLACED WITH REBUILT HYANDAI ENGINE. IMMEDIATELY ISSUES STARTING OCCURRING SUCH AS UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION, AND NOW IT WON'T ACCELERATE TO 55 MPH. THERE IS NO POWER AND THE NEW ENGINE IS KNOCKING. AT NEARLY $8,000 OUT OF MY POCKET I AM AGAIN WITHOUT A VEHICLE FOR WEEKS ON END. I AM AN ESSENTIAL WORKER WITH A NEWBORN CHILD AND I CANNOT RISK A BREAK DOWN WHILE ENROUTE THE 37 MILES ONE WAY TO WORK OR AT ANY OTHER LOCATION. ANOTHER ACQUAINTANCE HAS A 2016 SONATA AND HER ENGINE IS ALSO MAKING A KNOCKING SOUND. PLEASE INCLUDE THE NEWER MODELS ON THE ENGINE RECALL AS THEY ARE DOING THE SAME. PLEASE ADVISE WHAT RECOURSE I HAVE FOR A RELIABLE VEHICLE. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET ANOTHER 150,000 MILES AT LEAST OUT OF MY SANTA FE AND IT COULD DIE A NORMAL DEATH AS OPPOSED TO A QUICK DEATH DUE TO ENGINE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE ENGINE FAILURE AND OTHER ENGINE ISSUES HAVE OCCURRED.

I WAS DRIVING MY CAR 45 MILES AN HOUR ON SATURDAY APRIL 10TH, AROUND 5:40PM IN THE CURB LANE. THE CAR COMPLETELY DIED UNEXPECTEDLY. I MANAGED TO COAST TO A SMALL PARKING LOT OFF OF A BUSY STREET. I HAD THE CAR TOWED AND ASSESSED BY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC ON THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. THEY DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE HAD BEEN COMPLETELY SEIZED, BUT THEY PERFORMED NO REPAIR. THE NEXT SCHEDULED CAR SERVICE WAS 86600 MILES, AND AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, THE CAR HAD ~84K MILES NOT LONG AFTER ITS SERVICE AT ~83K MILES. PLEASE NOTE THAT DURING THE LAST 12 MONTHS OF PANDEMIC, THE CAR GETS TAKEN OUT TO THE GROCERY STORE, A MILE A WAY, ONCE A WEEK OR TO A LOCAL BUSINESS NO MORE THE 8 MILES FROM THE HOUSE VERY OCCASIONALLY. SO THIS VEHICLE DOES NOT SEE HEAVY USAGE. HYUNDAI USA INDICATED THAT I SHOULD HAVE THIS CAR TOWED TO ONE OF THE DEALERSHIPS FOR ASSESSMENT, BUT HAVE ALSO DETERMINED THAT THIS VEHICLE IS COVERED BY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY OF 10 YEARS/120,000 MILES FROM ORIGINAL FIRST USE. THE CASE NUMBER WITH HYUNDAI USA IS 18154048.

1ST OCCURANCE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTED FLASHING, ENGINE WENT INTO "SAFE MODE" AND ACCELERATION DECREASED DRAMATICALLY. DEALERSHIP PUSHED A "UPDATE" TO THE COMPUTER AND "FIXED" IT. ISSUE HAS HAPPENED AGAIN AND NOW DEALERSHIP IS SAYING THAT THE ENGINE KNOCK SENSOR IS MESSED UP.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, I NOTICED A TAPPING NOISE THAT SOUNDED LIKE A FLAP HITTING THE CAR. I NEEDED GAS, SO GOT OFF AT THE NEXT EXIT. WHILE EXITING THE INTERSTATE, THE NOISE GOT LOUDER AND THE CAR DIDN'T WANT TO ACCELERATE. I PULLED INTO THE GAS STATION. AS I ENTERED THE PARKING SPOT, THE CAR DIED. (IT HAD BURNED OIL IN THE PAST. I HAVE HAD AN ENGINE CAM REPLACED IN AUG/SEPT 2019). I CHECKED THE OIL. NO OIL! SO, I RAN AND BOUGHT 5 QUARTS OF OIL AND PUT THEM IN THE ENGINE. I STARTED THE CAR AND IT DIDN'T WANT TO IDLE, BUT FINALLY DID AFTER A MINUTE. I ROLLED DOWN MY WINDOW AND THE CAR NOISE WAS MULTIPLE CLANGING SOUNDS. IT WAS AS LOUD AS A BAD MUFFLER. I SHUT OFF THE CAR AND CALLED MY BOYFRIEND. HE SAID IT SOUNDED LIKE MY ENGINE BLEW. I CALLED MCGRATHS IN HIAWATHA, IOWA AND HAD THE CAR TOWED THERE. I AM 6000 MILES OVER MY 100,000 MILE WARRANTY. I AM TOLD THAT HYUNDAI WON'T COVER THIS ISSUE. HOWEVER, WHAT HAPPENED TO MY CAR SOUNDED EXACTLY LIKE THE PROBLEM WITH THE HYUNDAI 4 CYLINDER ENGINE TROUBLES THAT WERE RECALLED IN 2018. HYUNDAI KNEW I WAS HAVING ENGINE ISSUES IN 2019, AND WOULD ONLY REPLACE THE CAM. I FEEL THAT MY ENGINE SHOULD BE COVERED BY HYUNDAI. CURRENTLY, MY CAR IS IN THE SHOP AND I HAVE NO VEHICLE TO DRIVE. THE DEALERSHIP IS GOING TO ASK HYUNDAI FOR A "GOOD WILL" PERCENTAGE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER, THIS IS NO GUARANTEE. I AM OVER THE IOWA LEMON LAW LIMIT FOR MILEAGE AND YEARS. I FEEL THAT SINCE THERE WERE ENGINE ISSUES WITH OTHER ENGINES HYUNDAI MADE, THAT THEY KNEW I WAS HAVING THE SAME ISSUES AND WOULDN'T REPAIR IT CORRECTLY. I NEED TO HAVE SOMEONE CHECK INTO THIS. I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO. I AM PREPARED TO GET A LAWYER. MY VEHICLE WAS NOT RECALLED EVER.

LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. THE VEHICLE WOULDNT START. IT JUST MAD A CLICK WHEN TURNING THE KEY. ALL OF THE LIGHTS WORK IN THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAS ABOUT 82,000 MILES

I HAD MY 2016 HYUNDAI SANTA FE SERVICED BY HYUNDAI FOR A TIRE CHANGE AND OIL CHANGE ALONG WITH THE RECALL UPDATE ON JAN 17, PRIOR TO GOING FROM ST LOUIS MO TO WICHITA KS. I AM A TRAVELING NURSE, MY CONTRACT WAS STARTING MONDAY THE 20TH. I WAS ADVISED THE RECALL WAS A SYSTEM UPDATE FOR IMPROPERLY WORKING SENSORS. MY MOTOR BLEW 2 HOURS INTO MY TRIP ON JAN 18TH WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I HEARD A LOUD POPPING NOISE AND FELT IT AS WELL. MY VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY STARTED TO SMOKE. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, OIL WAS POURING OUT THE VEHICLE. IT WAS 30 DEGREES AND IM STUCK ON A 2 LANE HIGHWAY. I WAS TOWED TO THE CLOSEST DEALER, WHERE I WAS INFORMED THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET A RENTAL VEHICLE SINCE THE RENTAL LOCATION WAS CLOSED FOR THE DAY. I COULD NOT GET A LOANER VEHICLE DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF MILES I HAD TO DRIVE. MY ONLY OPTION WOULD BE TO PURCHASE A NEW VEHICLE. I WAS STRESSED AND VERY OVERWHELMED, THINKING ABOUT MY NEED TO GET TO WICHITA KS AND UPSET THAT MY VEHICLE THAT WAS JUST SERVICED BY HYNDAI HAD BLOWN UP ON THE HIGHWAY. WITHIN AN HOUR OF LEAVING THE DEALERSHIP, FINALLY HAVING A MOMENT ALONE, WITHOUT A SALESMAN IN MY FACE, I REALIZED THIS WAS A MISTAKE. I CALLED BACK TO RETURN THE VEHICLE BUT MY SALESMAN WAS GONE FOR THE DAY AND THE DEALERSHIP WAS CLOSING. I TEXT MY SALESMAN ON SUNDAY ADVISING THAT I WANT TO RETURN THE NEW VEHICLE AND JUST GET THE RENTAL CAR AND MY VEHICLE FIXED, AS HYUNDAI ROADSIDE HAD PROMISED. ON MONDAY JAN 20TH I WAS ADVISED THEY WOULD NOT REVERSE THIS SALE AND I COULD NOT GET MY VEHICLE BACK. NOW I'M STUCK IN A VEHICLE I DO NOT TRUST WITH A HIGHER PAYMENT, HIGHER INSURANCE PREMIUM, FEELING COMPLETELY TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. I DO NOT TRUST THE HYUNDAI BRAND. SEVERAL INJURIES HAVE OCCURRED TO OTHERS DUE TO THEIR LACK OF HONESTY. THERE ARE MANY POSTS ONLINE ABOUT HYUNDAI'S POOR BUSINESS PRACTICES. THE RECALL IS CALLED A CAMPAIGN.
