PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE CONTACT HEARD A LOT OF SQUEAKING WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS AND MAKING TURNS. THE DEALER WAS NOT CALLED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 155,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SUBFRAME WAS CORRODED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT CALLED LANCASTER HYUNDAI AT (866) 528-2534 (LOCATED AT 5260 MAIN ST, EAST PETERSBURG, PA 17520) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND ALSO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 127,028.

NOW THAT IT IS HAPPENING ON ALL OF THEM, IT IS OBVIOUS TO ME THAT IT IS A DEFECT. HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND COULD THEY GET IT RESOLVED?

THE DEALER HAD TO DISASSEMBLE THE VEHICLE. OTHER PARTS WERE DAMAGED. THE DEALER REFUSED TO REPLACE THE DAMAGED PARTS AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD ONLY SERVICE THE RECALL, WHICH WAS COMPLETED. ALSO, THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 09V317000 (LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES). THE CONTACT WAS NOT NOTIFIED BY THE MANUFACTURER OF THE TWO RECALLS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE PARTS WERE DAMAGED FROM THE COMPLETION OF THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO PROVIDE COVERAGE FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE DAMAGED PARTS, STATING THAT THE DEALER PROVIDED THE REMEDY FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 165,000.

THE VEHICLE STARTED MAKING A NOISE AND DRIVING WEIRD. IT LOOKED LIKE ONE TIRE WAS POINTED STRAIGHT AND THE OTHER TIRE TURNED SLIGHTLY. I STOPPED AT A GAS STATION TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG AND THEY SAID THE A FRAME WAS ALMOST RUSTED INTO. I HAD ALREADY HAD THE METAL IN THE REAR OF THE CAR REPLACED FROM BEING RUSTED OUT NEAR WERE THE SHOCK ATTACHES. I HAVE RESEARCHED AND SEEN WHERE SEVERAL SONATAS HAVE BEEN RECALLED DUE TO SEVERE RUST ISSUES. THE BODY EVEN HAS BEEN RUSTING BADLY. THE BIGGER CONCERN IS THE FRAME. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT NOW. DO NOT KNOW WHAT RECOURSE I HAVE. THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING. THE CAR IS NOW PARKED AND AM AFRAID TO MOVE IT, EVEN TO A GARAGE.

NOTICED PULLING TO RIGHT AS DRIVING, ALONG WITH RATTLING IN FRONT END. FOUND THAT DRIVER FRONT SUBFRAME NEAR LOWER SUSPENSION MOUNT IS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH. DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A NOTED ISSUE WITH THESE MODEL VEHICLES AND THAT A RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED BY THE MANUFACTURER. DUE TO OBVIOUS SAFETY CONCERNS I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO PROCEED WITH THIS CONCERN. *TR
THE CHROME PLATING ON THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES PEELED AWAY AND CUT PASSENGER'S HANDS. IN 2009 THE HANDLES WERE "REPAIRED" BY A HYUNDAI DEALER, BUT BY 2013 THE CHROME PLATING WAS AGAIN BEGINNING TO PEEL AWAY AND CUT PASSENGER HANDS. HYUNDAI AMERICA AND THE DEALER BOTH CLAIM THE PROBLEM IS RESOLVED, AND THERE IS ONLY A 12 MONTH WARRANTY. I BELIEVE IT IS IMPROPER TO CLAIM AN ISSUE SUBJECT TO A RECALL WOULD BE "FIXED" BY CREATING THE SAME HAZARD WITH THE SAME PARTS. CHROME PLATED INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE ON DRIVER'S SIDE BEGAN PEELING, LEAVING VERY SHARP EDGES, WHICH CUT MY FINGER. WE COVERED THE HANDLE WITH TAPE TO PROTECT FROM FUTURE CUTS. I LOOKED FOR A RECALL NOTICE ON THIS PART AND FOUND ONE AND CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS REPAIR MYSELF. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA AND WAS TOLD TO CONTACT HYUNDAI. I DID NOTHING SINCE I COULDN'T AFFORD THE REPAIR. IN THE PAST 9 MONTHS, I HAVE BEEN THE PASSENGER MORE OFTEN THAN BEFORE AND NOW THE INTERIOR HANDLE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE HAS SAME PROBLEM-PEELING OFF, LEAVING SHARP EDGES. ONCE AGAIN I NICKED MY FINGER ON IT. RECENTLY HAD A REPAIR DONE AT THE DEALERSHIP AND ASKED THE ADVISER ABOUT THE PROBLEM HE SAID HE HAD NO RECORD OF A RECALL. I FOUND THE RECALL ONLINE & SHOWED HIM. HE SAID I SHOULD CALL HYUNDAI,.I SPOKE TO A REP @ HYUNDAI WHO TOLD ME THAT EVEN THOUGH I MAY HAVE A PROBLEM DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL MY VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED IN 10/2001, WHICH MEANS I DON'T REALLY HAVE THE PROBLEM DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL I WAS FURIOUS. THIS IS NOT AN IMAGINARY PROBLEM - I HAVE CUT MY FINGERS TWICE. SHE SAID SHE WOULD HAVE SOMEONE CALL ME BACK TO DISCUS FURTHER & THAT NEVER HAPPENED. THAT WAS ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO. I DON'T CARE WHAT THE RECALL DATE SAYS - MY CAR HAS THE EXACT PROBLEM DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL NOTICE. THE REP ALSO TOLD ME THE RECALL GOES BY THE DATE THE CAR WAS PUT INTO SERVICE, NOT THE DATE MANUFACTURED OF 10/01; SHE SAID THE CAR WAS NOT PUT INTO SERVICE UNTIL 3/03-AFTER THE RECALL DATE.THE RECALL SAYS 1/28/02-3/22/03. ALSO I THE CAR HAD TO BE PUT INTO SERVICE EARLIER THAN 03 BECAUSE I BOUGHT IT ON 10/16/02. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS ISN'T COVERED BY THE RECALL/CAMPAIGN - WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT. AFTER HAVING INCREASED DIFFICULTY CONTROLLING THE CAR, I TOOK IT TO MY TIRE DEALER FOR AN ALIGNMENT AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD NOT HELP ME BECAUSE THE FRAME WAS "BROKEN" AND WAS SHREDDING MY REAR TIRES. I CALLED HYUNDAI CORPORATE AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE SUBFRAME AND WAS ADVISED TO TAKE THE CAR TO MY LOCAL DEALER FOR INSPECTION. UPON INSPECTION, I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS COVERED ON THE RECALL AND LEFT IT WITH THEM FOR TWO DAYS FOR REPAIR. WHEN I PICKED THE CAR UP, I WAS TOLD THAT THE FRONT WAS REPAIRED AT NO COST TO ME, HOWEVER, THE REAR (WHICH IS WHAT I WENT IN FOR) WAS IN VERY BAD SHAPE BUT IT WAS NOT COVERED AND WOULD COST ME $1,500 TO REPAIR IT. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW THE FRONT OF A FRAME CAN BE PART OF A RECALL, BUT THE REAR IS NOT. ????? AND I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE LOCAL DEALER DIDN'T CALL TO TELL ME THIS BEFORE HE DID THE WORK ON THE FRONT. HAD I KNOWN HOW MUCH IT WAS GOING TO COST ME, I WOULD HAVE TOLD HIM NOT TO BOTHER. SHOULD I CHOOSE TO KEEP THE CAR, IN ADDITION TO $1,500 TO REPAIR THE REAR FRAME, I WILL ALSO NEED TO BUY TWO TIRES TO REPLACE THE TWO WHICH THIS REAR FRAME IS SHREDDING. UNBELIEVABLE. *TR

MY CAR HAD BEEN EXPERIENCING PULLING TO THE RIGHT AND I WAS REPLACING THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE EVERY WEEK. IT FELT AS IF THE TIRE WAS GOING TO FALL OFF. I TOOK IT TO MY DAD WHOM IN TURN GOT A MECHANIC TO LOOK AT IT. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THE K FRAME WAS BROKEN. HE TRIED WELDING IT. THE WELD HELD FOR ABOUT TWO WEEKS. AFTER RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM I FOUND THAT THERE IS A RECALL AND SETTLEMENT FROM HYUNDAI. I CALLED THE CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT WHO IN TURN GAVE ME A CASE NUMBER AND HAD BE TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY INSPECTED THE CAR AND DETERMINED THAT MY CAR DIDN'T FIT THE CRITERIA. I'M CONFUSED BY THE FACT THAT SO MANY VEHICLES LIKE MINE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM BUT THEY DON'T FIT THE "CRITERIA". SOMETHING IS WRONG. AND IT'S MORE THAN CORROSION OR THE LACK OF. *TR

I FEEL THE NEED TO FULLY REPLACE ALL THE DEFECTIVE DOOR HANDLES. THIS DIDN'T RESOLVE THE PROBLEM AND ONLY MADE IT WORSE WITH THE DOORHANDLES BEING STICKY AND UNABLE TO OPEN AT TIMES UNTIL YOU STICK THE ADHESIVE STRIP BACK ON. MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING MY 2002 SONATA, WHEN IT BASICALLY JUST FELL APART. IT SOUNDED LIKE SHE WAS DRIVING ON THE TIRE RIM, BUT ALL 4 TIRES WERE STILL INFLATED. THE FRONT PASSENGER-SIDE TIRE DID LOOK TILTED OUT. IT HAD TO BE TOWED FROM THAT SITE. AN INSURANCE ADJUSTER INSPECTED IT AND STATED HE WAS SURE THAT THE CAR HAD GONE OFF THE ROAD AT SOME POINT BECAUSE THE AXLE WAS BROKEN, THAT TIRE WAS BENT AND THE ENGINE CRADLE WAS SCUFFED "SHINY". IT HAD NOT GONE OFF THE ROAD, SO MY MECHANIC TOOK A CLOSER LOOK AND FOUND THAT THE ENGINE CRADLE WAS RUSTED RIGHT THOUGH AND WHAT HAD HAPPENED (TO MY 16 YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER WHILE DRIVING ON A BUSY ROAD AT NIGHT) WAS THAT THE ENGINE CRADLE WAS SO RUSTED THAT IT CRUMBLED, CAUSING THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION TO FALL AND BREAK THE AXLE AND BEND THE WHEEL! THANKFULLY, SHE HAD ONLY JUST DRIVEN ONTO THE ROAD FROM A DRIVEWAY, SO SHE WASN'T GOING FAST AND THE LANE SHE ENTERED WAS CLEAR. I'D HATE TO THINK WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD SHE MADE IT TO THE HIGHWAY BEFORE THIS HAPPENED! WHEN WE DISCOVERED ON LINE THAT SO MANY OTHERS HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THEIR 1999-2002 SONATAS, WE CONTACTED OUR LOCAL DEALER. HE SAID WE NEEDED TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED (15 MILES) TO HIS SERVICE DEPT WHERE THEY WOULD HAVE A HYUNDAI REP TAKE A LOOK AT IT. HE SAID HIS MANAGER HAD BEEN KNOWN TO REPLACE THE ENGINE CRADLE FREE OF CHARGE, BUT HE DOUBTED VERY MUCH THAT THEY'D PAY FOR THE AXLE, WHEEL, AND ANY OTHER DAMAGE INCURRED. AFTER READING ALL THESE OTHER SIMILAR INCIDENTS, I DON'T KNOW IF I WANT TO BOTHER GOING TO THE TROUBLE OF HAVING MY CAR TOWED TO HYUNDAI. DT*: THE CONSUMER STATED THE INTERIOR MATERIAL ON THE PASSENGER'S DOOR HANDLE OF THE VEHICLE CAUSED MINOR INJURIES TO A CHILD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY REPLACED THE DOOR HANDLES. THE CONSUMER IS NOW HAVING THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEM WITH THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. *JB UPDATED 3/9/2006 - *NM

ON JULY 26TH, 2005, I WAS MEETING A CO-WORKER FOR LUNCH WHEN I NOTICED THAT THE PAINT ON THE FRONT FACIA COVERING THE BUMPER ON MY 2002 HYUNDAI SONATA WAS BUBBLING AND STARTING TO PEEL. AFTER WORK THAT SAME DAY, I ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT THE SALESPERSON WHO SOLD ME THE VEHICLE AT THE DEALERSHIP. I SPOKE THE SERVICE MANAGER AND HAD HIM WALK OUT TO INSPECT THE FACIA. HIS FIRST QUESTION TO ME WAS WHETHER I HAD THE VEHICLE REPAINTED. I TOLD HIM I HAD NOT! HE THEN ASKED ME IF I HAVE EVER BROUGHT MY CAR TO A TOUCHLESS CAR WASH, WHICH I HAVE FOR MANY, MANY YEARS HERE IN TOWN. HE THEN STATED THAT BECAUSE OF THE 7500 PSI CAUSED BY THE HIGH PRESSURE WATER THAT THEY WERE NOT AT FAULT AND THAT IT WAS NOT A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. I ASKED WHY THIS WAS NOT OCCURRING ON THE BODY OF THE CAR OR ON THE REAR FACIA, AND HE STATED THAT HE DID NOT KNOW. DISSATISFIED WITH THIS RESPONSE, I CALLED HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA IN FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA AT 800-633-5151 THAT EVENING (8/5/05) AND SPOKE WITH A GENTLEMAN. AFTER TELLING HIM OF THE SITUATION, HE THEN STATED THAT I SHOULD TRY TO GET THE CAR FIXED AT ANOTHER DEALERSHIP! ON MONDAY, AUGUST 8TH, I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA REPRESENTATIVE, WHO STATED THAT THE DEALERSHIP WAS NOT GOING TO REMEDY THIS SITUATION. I RECEIVED A RESPONSE FROM THE BBB AUTO LINE DATED AUGUST 30TH, STATING THAT MY VEHICLE EXCEEDED THE MILEAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR FILING WITH THEIR PROGRAM. MY VEHICLE HAD 27,500 MILES AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. APPARENTLY, THE BBB AUTO LINE AGREEMENT WITH HYUNDAI IS TO ONLY ACCEPT CLAIMS WITHIN TWO YEARS OR 24,000 MILES, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST (SEE DOCUMENT HYUNDAI-NY 8/2000). HYUNDAI WARRANTY EXPRESSLY STATES WARRANTY AGAINST PAINT DEFECTS FOR 3 YEARS, 36,000 MILES. I HAVE SUBMITTED A COMPLAINT TO THE NYS ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE AS OF 9/7/2005. *JB

WHILE OPENING THE DRIVER'S DOOR CONSUMER NOTICED THAT THE DOOR HANDLE WAS SHARP. CONSUMER'S HAND WAS CUT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE DOOR HANDLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND HE REPLACED IT. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM RECURRED. *AK
