There is a recall for the rear lower control arms for the 2006 Hyundai sonata getting rusty and not performing. My car was taken in for an alignment and the mechanic said he isn’t able to make the toe match up to be in good driving standards. I tried reaching out to a Hyundai dealership and they checked the VIN and said they couldn’t do anything about it because my car isn’t in a certain part of the United States. If I don’t get this fixed soon the mechanic said my when could fall out of alignment and cause some serious damage to me or someone else.

I have a 06 sonata 2.4l that had rear control arms rotted out plus the subframe. And my esc light is on not really sure what to wit that. But my car is down now due to rear control arms needed replaced.

The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the lower and upper control arm bolts were severely corroded; however, the contact was not yet informed of what needed to be replaced. Rear lower control arm snapped
The rear suspension became corroded and one of the coils or bars broke off while driving. After the coil from the suspension broke off, it punctured a tire, which blew while driving. Thankfully, I had just exited the interstate, otherwise this would've happened at high speeds. This is a known issue that has previously been reported in a recall (113). The vehicle is registered in Ohio and has been since 2014.

The contact stated while driving 25 MPH, the vehicle drove over a bump in the roadway and the steering wheel had to be turned all the way to the left to keep the vehicle going straight. The vehicle was taken to a non-Hyundai dealer who diagnosed that the cross member of the vehicle was entirely corroded, and the control arm had detached from the cross member. The contact stated that while checking the vehicle Carfax report, he became aware that the recall repair under NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V354000 (Suspension) had been completed on the vehicle prior to him owning the vehicle. The contact contacted Alexandria Hyundai (1707 Mt Vernon Ave, Alexandria, VA 22301) where the recall repair was completed, and was informed that an anti-corrosion inhibitor was sprayed on the cross member of the vehicle instead of replacing the cross member. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle to an authorized Hyundai dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. I WAS RESEARCHING THIS ON THE COMPUTER AND SAW THAT THIS IS NOT AN UNCOMMON SAFETY ISSUE AND CALLED HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY TOOK MY INFO AND TOLD ME THAT MY CAR WAS NOT COVERED, BUT I COULD AT MY OWN EXPENSE TAKE IT TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND HAVE IT EVALUATED. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE MECHANIC, WHO INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND DISCOVERED THE BELT THAT WAS INSTALLED WAS NOT THE CORRECT ONE FOR THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER, AFTER THE ORIGINAL BELT WAS INSTALLED THE NOISE WAS STILL PRESENT, BUT NOT AS LOUD. ALSO, THE STRUTS WERE REPLACED DUE TO HEARING A NOISE WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS.*JB

I HAD 3 PREVIOUS DEALER ALIGNMENTS AND WAS TOLD BY DEALER IN APRIL 2013 THERE IS NO MORE CAMBER/CASTER ADJUSTMENT POSSIBLE, MY CAR IS "OUT OF SPECS", THAT I NEED A $650 AFTERMARKET CAMBER ADJUSTMENT KIT. DEALER TOLD ME TO ROTATE TIRES EVERY 3,500 MILES WHICH IS MUCH SOONER THEN THE FACTORY RECOMMENDED 7,500 MILES. I WAS TOLD TIRES WILL LOSE 50% OR MORE OF TREAD LIFE. I CALLED AAA AND HAD IT TOWED TO A LOCAL GARAGE. DUE TO HOLIDAY WEEKEND, MY HUSBAND SAW THE MECHANIC ON MONDAY 7/8/13, WHO DIAGNOSED IT AS A REAR SUBFRAME CORROSION AND FAILURE. HE ADVISED US TO CHECK FOR A RECALL AS HE WAS FAMILIAR WITH A PRIOR FRONT FRAME RECALL A FEW YEARS AGO. HE HAD OTHER REPAIRS AHEAD OF US, SO WE HAD IT TOWED TO OUR MECHANIC 15 MILES AWAY. WHEN OUR MECHANIC GOT IT ON THE LIFT WE WERE TOLD THE DAMAGE WAS VERY SEVERE: THE REAR END WAS ROTTED, NEEDING REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT OF REAR CROSSMEMBER, 2 UPPER AND 2 LOWER ARMS, L/R UPPER CONTROL ARM AND JOINT, WITH REAR SHOCKS AND MOUNTS, AND ALIGNMENT.WE CALLED HYUNDAI REGIONAL OFFICE, OPENED CASE # 5870260. THE AGENT REPORTED NO RECALLS AND THIS WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY, BUT HE STATED HE WAS "VERY FAMILIAR" WITH THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM IN OTHER YEARS AND MODELS. I WENT TO A SEARS AUTO CENTER BACK IN DECEMBER 2012 TO GET AN ALIGNMENT. IN THE FIRST WEEK OF MAY 2013, I WENT BACK TO SEARS TO HAVE MY ALIGNMENT RECHECKED BECAUSE I WAS EXPERIENCING SHAKING WHILE BRAKING. THEY TOLD ME MY REAR BRAKE SHOES WERE CORRODED AND FALLING APART AND I NEEDED TO CHANGE THEM, ALONG WITH GETTING NEW ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS. AFTER HAVE THESE PARTS INSTALLED, THE MECHANIC CALLED ME OVER REGARDING MY ALIGNMENT AND SAID THE REAR SUSPENSION FRAME WAS CORRODED AND RUSTED IN 2 PLACES, CAUSING THE TOW TO GO OUT OF ALIGNMENT. THEY SAID I NEEDED TO EITHER REPLACE THE WHOLE SUBFRAME OR HAVE A STEEL BEAM WELDED TO IT FOR STABILITY SO THEY COULD GET THE CORRECT ALIGNMENT SPECS. IF I DIDN'T FIX IT, THE ALIGNMENT WOULD ALWAYS BE OFF. THEY ALSO WARNED ME THAT IF I TRAVELED WITH MY VEHICLE LONG DISTANCE, THE FRAME COULD BREAK WHERE THE CORROSION OCCURRED, CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. 2 WEEKS AGO, I WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 35 MPH IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN MY STEERING WHEEL LISTED TO THE LEFT ABOUT 45 DEGREES AND MY REAR WHEELS STARTED TO LEAN IN. THE CAR WAS MOVED TO MY LOCAL REPAIR SHOP ON NOV 1ST. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS SUBFRAME CORROSION EFFECTING THE REAR CONTROL ARM AND MAKING THE CAR UNSAFE TO DRIVE. HE ADVISED ME TO HAVE MY HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP LOOK AT IT. I CALLED GARVEY HYUNDAI, OF QUEENSBURY, NY, WHERE I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE. I SPOKE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AND ARRANGED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED FROM MY SHOP TO GARVEY. HE INFORMS ME THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY PRIOR PROBLEMS WITH SUBFRAME CORROSION AND THIS MODEL YEAR AND NO RECALLS. HE TELLS ME THAT IT WILL COST BETWEEN $1350 AND $2400 TO REPAIR AND ALTHOUGH HYUNDAI IS NOT RESPONSIBLE THEY OFFERED ME $500 TOWARD THE REPAIR WORK. I FEEL THAT THIS SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE WITH A VEHICLE THAT IS ONLY A 2006 AND THAT THE REPAIR SHOULD BE COVERED IN FULL BY HYUNDAI. THE CAR HAS SPENT WINTERS IN A GARAGE WHEN NOT DRIVEN. THE HYUNDAI SONATA MINE IS AN'06 HAS A STRUT PROBLEM IN THAT IT "THUNKS" ON CERTAIN ROAD SURFACES AND BACK INTO OR OUT OF DRIVEWAYS, I HAVE TRIED IN VAIN TO GET HYUNDAI CORPORATE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM ONLY TO FALL ON DEAF EARS, THE EDMONDS CAR SPACE FORUM IS FULL OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT HIS PROBLEM. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, HE HEARD A LOUD BANGING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE NOISE WAS LOUDER WHILE MAKING A TURN WITH A PASSENGER SEATED IN THE REAR. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE ON TWO OCCASIONS; THE FIRST TIME THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE AND THE SECOND TIME THE DEALER ADJUSTED THE REAR SUSPENSION. THE SUSPENSION ADJUSTMENT FAILED TO SOLVE THE FAILURE. AS OF OCTOBER 9, 2007, THE DEALER HAD NOT REPAIRED THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 12,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 16,997. THE DEALER STATED THE FRONT RIGHT DOOR LOCK INOPERABLE, PASSENGER SEAT AREA MAKES A RATTLING SOUND, RIGHT TRUNK TRIM VIBRATES WHEN VEHICLE IN MOTION AND HEARS KNOCKING SOUND IN THE ENGINE. THIS COMPLAINT APPLIES TO A 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA LIMITED (NO OPTION FOR 2007 WAS AVAILABLE IN DROP DOWN MENU) (ISSUE 1) AT OR AROUND THE INITIAL FEW DAYS AFTER TAKING DELIVERY I BEGAN TO NOTICE ABRUPT VIBRATION AND SHAKING COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL; SUBSTANTIAL ENOUGH TO FEEL IN THE SEAT. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO DEALERSHIP ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM BUT THEY REPORTED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND REPORTED THE VEHICLE TO BE IN MANUFACTURER SPECIFICATION. NONETHELESS, DEALER ATTEMPTED WHEEL BALANCE AND RADIAL FORCE BALANCE AS A "GOOD WILL GESTURE." PROBLEM IS NOW MORE ARTICULATED AND THE ISSUE REMAINS UNRESOLVED. (ISSUE 2) ENGINE EMITS A RATTLE NOISE SIMILAR TO LIFTER CLATTER UPON START AND CONTINUES THROUGHOUT OPERATION; PARTICULARLY IN COLDER WEATHER. TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER WAS REPLACED AND ONE NOISE WAS RESOLVED BUT THE CONTINUAL NATURE OF THE LIFTER CLATTER REMAINS. DEALERSHIP AND HYUNDAI REPRESENTATIVE REPORTED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THE ISSUE REMAINS UNRESOLVED. (ISSUE 3) FUEL SLOSHING COMING FROM THE FUEL TANK. MANUFACTURER AND DEALER CLAIMS THIS TO BE NORMAL AND NOT A SAFETY RISK. SOUND IS MORE PRONOUNCED AT OR AROUND 3/4 TANK. BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER DIRECTLY AND REMAINS UNRESOLVED. *NM

DEALER ACKNOWLEDGED SEVERAL COMPLAINTS, BUT INSISTED THAT IT WAS A CHARACTERISTIC OF SUSPENSION DESIGN AND NOTHING WAS WRONG NOR COULD ANYTHING BE DONE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *NM

AFTER OWNING THE CAR AND DRIVING IT FOR LESS THAN 100 MILES, THERE WAS A NOTICEABLE VIBRATION ON THE AROUND 60-75 MPH. THE TIRES WERE RE-BALANCED AND THE CONDITION REMAINS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ANOTHER DEALER AND RE-BALANCED AND THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. WHEN I RETURNED AGAIN TO THE PURCHASING DEALER FOR THIS PROBLEM FOR A THIRD TIME, I WAS PROVIDED A LOANER VEHICLE (GLS V-6) AND IT HAS THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT MORE EVIDENT. REAR SUSPENSION HAS ANNOYING AND LOUD THUMPING NOISE WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS UNDER 40 MPH. STARTED NOTICING NOISE WITHIN 1000 MILES AFTER PURCHASING VEHICLE, WHICH WAS ON 10/26/05. MANUFACTURER HAS ADMITTED THE PROBLEM IN A BBB ARBITRATION HEARING, CASE NO. HYU0641565 DATED 04/27/06 AND STATED IT AS A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE. ALSO IN A TELEPHONE CONVERSATIONS WITH A REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE AND OTHERS AS A PROBLEM. TOOK THE PROBLEM TO DEALERSHIP, WHO COULD NOT FIND THE CAUSE AND DID NOT PUT IT ON THE WORK ORDERS. THEREFORE, I LOST THE ARBITRATION HEARING, EVEN THOUGH THEY TOLD ME PERSONALLY THAT HYUNDAI TOLD THEM NOT TO DO ANYTHING, BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN TERMS OF THE THUMPING. WHAT AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURER WOULD INCORPORATE A NOISE IN THEIR VEHICLES AS A SELLING FEATURE AND STATE IT'S A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE? IF HYUNDAI DOES NOT KNOW THE CAUSE OF THE REAR SUSPENSION NOISE, THEN THEY DO NOT KNOW IF A SAFETY FACTOR IS INVOLVED. THE SUSPENSION COULD AND PROBABLY IS DEFECTIVE IN SOME WAY. *NM
