Brakes seize up while driving and then cannot move the vehicle. This causes a dangerous situation while driving and then breaks lock up and cannot move car even though vehicle is on and then stopped for a stop light. Car must then be turned off and sit for about 30 minutes so it can unseize and when that happens, you can then resume driving and then check engine light comes on. Brake lights were staying on even when vehicle is shut completely off. ABS and ESC lights stay on consistently and never turn off. Vehicle brake switch was replaced at Carolina Hyundai of high point, NC. So break lights have been repaired. They had to order the stop switch lamp replacement for recall as it was never done and will be fixed in next week. 3 door handles fell off and cannot open the rear driver side door at all. Window electric system won’t let windows go up and down and had to make a latch pull string to open driver door. Passenger door will not open at all and no handle and is a dangerous situation. Break switch not being replaced would have cause an electrical fire and is a complete dangerous vehicle even after being inspected less than a week ago
Brake Calipers are getting stuck often damaging the rotors and pads. This happens even for new calipers and rotors that won't last more than one year after replacement. The parts were original from manufacturer. The rear and front brakes were randomly getting stuck on one wheel after a period of using brakes. This put the vehicle in danger of getting fire from overheating rotors or increasing the risk of a crash because of an unusable brake system. This incident has repeated over time from 2017 till 2025 inducing big spendings for fixing brakes
The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact heard a loud grinding noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer to be inspected. The contact later discovered that the dealer only did a visual inspection of the brake pads and rotors. The mechanic stated that there were metal shavings from the brake pads and that the contact should wash the wheels to clear the metal shavings. The wheels were washed as instructed; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 181,000.

The problem as reported by so many others that the rear brake system has an inherent failure in the caliper/rotor/brake pads. I have vested nearly $2500.00 on the three for mentioned parts and labor over last 4 years. Between Midas and now a private mechanic have tried better lube on slide pins but the problem still persists. A little research states that the caliper piston doesn't retract from the rotors and in turn heating up the brake components to the point of failure. Some Law firms have stated the problem is a production flaw my problem with a system with this failure rate isn't recognized by the Hyundia. Calipers should simply last 80 to a 100 thousand miles under most driving conditions. Looking forward to your response. Kerry yakel

COMPLETE BREAK SYSTEM AS BEEN DONE AS WELL AS TIRES WITH ROTATIONS, HAVING TO REPLACE BRAKES AND ROTARS OFTEN. CONTINUES TO PULL HARD TO RIGHT WHILE DRIVING AND IS FAR FROM A SMOOTH RIDE. WHEN BREAKING THE CAR FEELS TO PULL FORWARD. THE EMERGENCY BREAK DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. THIS FEELS LIKE A NEVER ENDING ISSUE. THE CAR SEEMS TO SIT LOW ON ONE SIDE, HAVE TO TAKE IT TO GET LOOKED AT.
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. HECU INTERNAL FAILURE. ACTIVE DTC PRESENT: C1237 PRIMARY PRESSURE SENSOR SIGNAL. SENSOR FAILURE INSIDE THE ABS CONTROL CYCLE. VALUES AT PRESSURE SENSOR CHANGED FROM 0.3 BAR TO 78.0 BAR; NO CHANGE IN SUPPLY VOLTAGE. SUPPLY VOLTAGE CONSTANTLY AT 14V. HYUNDAI HAS MENTIONED THAT THERE ARE NO ACTIVE RECALLS AND THAT THIS PART IS LIFE THREATENING IF IT FAILS - BUT SINCE THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED THEY ARE SHYING AWAY. ONLINE THERE ARE SEVERAL KNOWN ISSUES WITH HYNDAI AND HECU. SPECIALLY FOR MODELS BEFORE 2009. ITS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT HYUNDAI IS NOT AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND SEEMS LIKE THEY ARE AVOIDING THEIR RESPONSIBILITY AND PLAYING WITH HUMAN LIFE. WOULD APPRECIATE IF THE GOVERNMENT CAN DO SOMETHING.

MY BRAKE LIGHT STOP SWITCH BROKE INTO PIECES WITH NORMAL USE SO THE BRAKE LIGHTS STAY ON WHEN CAR IS TURNED OFF. I OWN A 2009 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE OPERATING I NOTICED A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN SPEED, COASTING, FUEL ECONOMY, AND BRAKING DISTANCE. UPON PARKING MY CAR I SMELLED BURNING BRAKES. AS I WALKED PAST THE DRIVER REAR TIRE I COULD FEEL THE HEAT RADIATING FROM THE TIRE. I DIDN'T DARE TOUCH THE RIM FOR FEAR IT WOULD BURN ME. DIAGNOSIS REVEALED A SEIZED REAR DRIVER BRAKE CALIPER PISTON. THIS CAUSED RUINED THE REAR BRAKES AND PUT UNDUE STRESS ON THE FRONT BRAKES. I HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE BRAKING SYSTEM AS THEY HAD ALL BECOME A SAFETY HAZARD. I PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WHICH COVERED THE REAR CALIPER REPLACEMENT BUT NOTHING ELSE. BURNING THROUGH BRAKES IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. I HAVEN'T NOTIFIED THE MANUFACTURE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 73,000.

STOP LAMP SWITCH REPLACEMENT. ON 01/14/17 I HAD AN APPOINTMENT AT PLAZA HYUNDAI LOCATED AT 2700 NOSTRAND AVE, BROOKLYN NY 11210 TO REPLACE MY STOP LAMP SWITCH. THEY DID NOT HAVE THE PART IN STOCK AT THAT TIME. THE PART WAS ORDERED ON 01/14/2017 AND AS OF THIS WRITING (02/17/2017) THEY HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE PART AND HAVE NO ESTIMATED TIME OR ARRIVAL ON THE PART. NO ONE EVEN NOTIFIED ME THAT THE CAMPAIGN WAS NOT COMPLETED. I HAD TO COME BACK IN THE FOLLOWING DAY 01/15/2017 BECAUSE MY BREAK LIGHTS WERE NOT TURNING OFF. AT THAT TIME THEY ATTEMPTED TO CHARGE ME FOR A DIAGNOSTIC, BUT I ADVISED THE MANAGER THAT I WAS THERE LESS THAN 24 HOURS AGO TO ADDRESS THE STOP LAMP SWITCH, WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSING THE ISSUE. THEY TOLD ME AT THAT TIME THAT THE PART WAS STILL ON ORDER. THEY REFUSE TO GIVE ME AN ETA. I CALLED HYUNDAI'S CORPORATE OFFICE, AND THEY COULD NOT GET AN ANSWER FROM PLAZA AUTO EITHER. THIS IS A SERIOUS RECALL AS IT EFFECTS MY ABILITY TO SIGNAL THAT I'M BREAKING. I WILL ATTEMPT TO GO TO ANOTHER SERVICE DEPARTMENT OR REMEDY MYSELF, BUT I THINK THAT THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.
REAR BRAKE CALIPERS HAVE SEIZED AT LEAST 7 TIMES, CAUSING ME TO NEED TO REPLACE THEM. I'M AT 115,000 MILES AND HAVE HAD THE LEFT ONE SEIZE, DESTROYING THE ROTOR AND PAD 4 TIMES, AND THE RIGHT ONE SEIZE 3 TIMES (ONCE RECURRING WITHIN 15,000 MILES OF REPLACEMENT). THE CAR HAS BEEN REPAIRED AT DIFFERENT SHOPS, BUT THE PROBLEM KEEPS RECURRING. FIRST TIME OCCURRED SHORTLY AFTER 30,000 MILES. OCCURS EVERY 1-2 YEARS SINCE THEN. I CURRENTLY HAVE 107K MILES AND IT'S OCTOBER 2016.I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE MY BRAKES 4 TIMES, SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE THE REAR BRAKE CALIPERS FAIL CAUSING BRAKES TO LOCK WHILE DRIVING PRODUCING SIGNIFICANT HEAT AND DAMAGE TO THE BRAKE COMPONENTS. PURCHASED MY 2009 SONATA IN FEBRUARY 2009, BY MID JULY I HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR BRAKES. I WAS A LITTLE SURPRISED SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW AND ONLY HAD ABOUT 5000 MILES. I WAS TOLD THAT I WAS REQUIRED TO CHECK THE BRAKES EVERY 3500 MILES AND IT WASN'T COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, NOT EVEN THE 5 YEAR BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY. IT IS NOW 2016 I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE MY REAR BRAKE CALIPERS, PADS AND ROTORS EVERY 6 MONTHS AT A COST OF OVER $400 EVERY TIME. THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF GRINDING, HEAT AND MASSIVE VIBRATION IN THE REAR WHILE BRAKING TO THIS POINT. I HAVE RETURNED MY CAR FOR BOTH CURRENT RECALLS (NOT APPLICABLE TO BRAKES). WITH SO MANY MODELS HAVING THE SAME ISSUES, ITS VERY DISAPPOINTING THAT HYUNDAI WILL NOT REPAIR THEIR FAULTY ENGINEERING AND THE NHTSA HAS NOT INVESTIGATED THIS MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE WITH BRAKING SYSTEMS IN THESE CARS.

UPON ACCELERATING UP AN ENTRANCE RAMP TO THE HIGHWAY, CAR ACCELERATED AT AN UNREASONABLE RATE OF SPEED TRIED USING BRAKES, BUT THEY WERE GONE. CAR HIT SPEEDS OF 60/65 MPH FOR MORE THAN 3 MILES ON A TURNPIKE. PARKING BRAKE DID NOT WORK, BRAKE PEDAL WAS DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND I COULD NOT CONTROL THE SPEED OF THE AUTO. KNOW THERE HAVE BEEN PROBLEMS WITH THE 2006 MODEL, BUT IS THERE ANYTHING SIMILAR TO MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE SONATA 2009.

HAD TO REPLACE BRAKES TWICE. AFTER READING 200 COMPLAINTS ONLINE, I HAVE DISCOVERED IT IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH ALL SONATAS. THE NEW BRAKES HAVE TO BE GROUND DOWN TO FIT THE SONATA.
THE REAR BRAKE CALIPERS APPEAR TO BE DEFECTIVE IN THAT A HIGH PERCENTAGE SEEM TO FAIL. THIS IS THE SECOND CALIPER THAT HAS REQUIRED REPAIR/REPLACEMENT, WHICH NECESSARILY ALSO REQUIRES REPLACEMENT OF BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. IT APPEARS THAT THE CALIPERS STICK IN THE EXTENDED POSITION CAUSING (IN THE BEST CASE) THE RAPID WEAR OF THE ROTORS AND CALIPERS, AND (IN THE WORST CASE) A HEAT BUILD UP, AND A FAILURE OF THE BRAKES. INTERNET BLOGS INDICATE THAT THIS IS NOT JUST A PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE BUT IS SYSTEMIC WITH HYUNDAI SONATAS, AND PARTICULARLY 2009 AND LATER. I WILL NOTE THAT HYUNDAI HAD A BRAKE RECALL REGARDING CALIPERS FOR SONATAS BETWEEN 2011 AND 2014, BUT THAT IT DID NOT EXTEND TO THE 2009 SONATAS.

IN FEBRUARY OF 2015, LESS THAN 2 MONTHS AFTER I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED, I NOTICED THE LEFT REAR TIRE WAS SCREECHING WHEN IN MOTION LIKE A BELT IN THE ENGINE WOULD. I TOOK IT TO A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY MADE ME AWARE THAT THE CALIPER HAD LOCKED UP AND NEEDED TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED & REPAIRED ALONG WITH A BRAND NEW ROTOR. I FIGURED THIS WAS JUST A ONE TIME ISSUE, UNTIL JUST THIS MONTH (FEBRUARY OF 2016) LESS THAN A YEAR AFTER REPAIRING THE CALIPER AND BRAKE SYSTEM IN THE LEFT REAR TIRE, A STRONG BURNING SMELL WAS APPEARING PERIODICALLY FROM THE RIGHT REAR TIRE AFTER ANY DRIVE. TOOK THE CAR TO THE SAME HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP WHO MADE ME AWARE THAT THE CALIPER WAS NOW LOCKED UP IN THE RIGHT REAR TIRE AND NEEDED TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED AND REPAIRED. IN BOTH CIRCUMSTANCES I WAS TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ABSOLUTELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE OFF THEIR LOT AND HAD TO GET A RENTAL CAR TO LEAVE THE CAR FOR REPAIRS. I DID MY RESEARCH... APPARENTLY THIS SAME MAKE/MODEL/YEAR HAS GIVEN LOTS OF PEOPLE THE SAME ISSUES.. BUT NO RECALL HAS BEEN MADE. THIS IS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS AND IN BOTH CIRCUMSTANCES I WAS DRIVING THE CAR WITH MY CAR SEAT AGED TODDLER IN THE BACK SEAT. PLEASE HELP ME GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS!!

ON AUGUST 30, 2014, THE REAR CALIPER ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR FOLLOWED SUIT. LESS THAN ONE YEAR LATER I HAVE REPLACED EACH OF THE REAR CALIPERS ONCE AGAIN. I HAD THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE REPAIRED ON MAY 15, 2015, AND THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE ON JUNE 9, 2015. I BOUGHT THE CAR WITH JUST OVER 53,000 MILES ON IT IN 2013. TODAY, IT HAS 101,000 MILES ON IT AND I HAVE REPLACED FOUR CALIPERS, THREE ROTORS AND FIVE SETS OF BRAKE PADS. EACH TIME MY CALIPERS FAILED I WAS PLACED IN DANGER OF TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE AND FIRE, UNKNOWINGLY. THE MECHANICS WHO WORKED ON MY CAR HAVE INDIVIDUALLY THEORIZED THAT AN ENGINEERING FAILURE IS THE CAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. LAST WEEK I CONTACTED HYUNDAI FOR FINANCIAL REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE REPAIRS. THE COMPANY STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT REIMBURSE ME SINCE THE PARTS WERE NOT REPLACED WITH HYUNDAI FACTORY PARTS, OR REPAIRED BY A HYUNDAI CERTIFIED DEALERSHIP. I AM AWARE THAT THERE WAS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST HYUNDAI BASED ON THIS ISSUE IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK. I HAVE ALSO READ, AND HEARD ABOUT MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THIS EXACT PROBLEM (REAR CALIPER PROBLEM) IN THEIR HYUNDAI SONATAS, BUILT BETWEEN THE YEARS 2006-2010.

RETURNING TO THE CAR REPAIR SHOP, ONE OF THE NEW ROTORS WAS COMPLETELY BLACK FROM THE EXTREME HEAT. THE PADS, ROTOR, AND CALIPERS REQUIRED COMPLETELY REPLACING - EVEN THE NEW ONES JUST PURCHASED. SEVEN MONTHS LATER IN AUGUST, THE SAME NOISE, SMELL AND EXCESSIVE HEAT HAPPENED AGAIN. PER THE DEALER "VERIFIED CUSTOMER CONCERN, TECHNICIAN REPLACED THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE CALIPER AS NEEDED. INSTALLED REPLACEMENT PADS,..." WE WERE FORTUNATE NOT TO BE IN ANY ACCIDENT WITH THESE POOR BRAKES. THE DEALER MADE US PAY FOR BOTH SETS OF REPAIRS. I TOLD THEM THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND THAT I EXPRESSED MY CONCERN ABOUT THE LEFT REAR CALIPER IN JANUARY. THEY TELL ME THAT IT IS UP TO HYUNDAI TO DECIDE WHETHER IT WILL BE COVERED OR NOT. IN OCTOBER 2013 THE RIGHT REAR BRAKES BEGAN SQUEALING AND APPROXIMATELY 2 WEEKS AFTER THE SQUEALING BEGAN IT STARTED MAKING THE SAME GRINDING NOISE AS IT DID THE PREVIOUS TIMES AND THE BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. TODAY I COULD NOT SHIFT INTO PARK FROM DRIVE. AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET I QUICKLY FOUND THE BRAKE SWITCH ISSUE. I CONFIRMED THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NOT FUNCTIONAL. THIS IS SOMETHING OCCURS WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING WHICH IS A BIT SCARY SINCE I DRIVE HOME ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY. I'M NOT SURE HOW LONG THE BRAKE LIGHTS HAD BEEN OUT. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED FUNCTIONING WHEN THE ESC OFF LIGHT BECAME PERMANENT. HOWEVER, FOR SOME REASON IT STARTED WORKING AGAIN WHEN THE SHIFT LOCK PROBLEM OCCURRED. ODD. THIS FAILED TO CORRECT PROBLEM AND I DON'T HAVE THE TIME NOR WANT TO CONTINUALLY SPEND MY SATURDAYS SITTING FOR HOURS IN THE SERVICE AREA WAITING ROOM. THIS IS THE SAME WHEEL ON WHICH SEVERAL THOUSAND MILES AGO THE CALIPER SEIZED CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE BRAKE ON THAT WHEEL. THE RATTLING SOUND HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A LONG TIME, AND THE MILEAGE I ENTERED FOR THIS COMPLAINT IS A SHEER GUESS.

THE REAR CALIPERS MOUNTING BRACKET IS HOLDING THE BRAKES WAY TO TIGHTLY TO THE ROTORS SO THEY ARE CONSTANTLY BEING APPLIED. THE ONLY WAY TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING IS TO MANUALLY GRIND DOWN THE SIDES OF THE BRAKES TO MAKE THEM FIT PROPERLY. I FOUND THIS OUT WHEN I CHANGED MY BRAKES BEFORE A LONG CAR RIDE (APPROX 4 HOURS). THE BRAKES WERE HOLDING THE CAR BACK AND THROWING OFF MY ALIGNMENT. BOUGHT VEHICLE WITH 49000 MILES WITH NEW BRAKES. REPLACED THEM AT 68200. CURRENTLY HAS 69200 AND I HAVE TO REPLACE THE BRAKES AGAIN BECAUSE THE HOT FRICTION COMPLETELY RUINED THE BRAKES. DURING VEHICLE OPERATION, SEVERAL PEOPLE PASSED ME AND MADE VARIOUS HAND SIGNALS AND GESTURES (PROFANE, SPECIFICALLY), AS I APPARENTLY HAD LOST FUNCTIONALITY OF MY BRAKE LIGHTS DURING MY JOURNEY HOME FROM WORK. WITH NO INDICATION ON THE OPERATOR CONSOLE TO ALERT THE OPERATOR THAT THIS HAD OCCURRED, I DID NOT REALIZE THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NOT FUNCTIONING UNTIL I HAD ARRIVED TO MY HOME (BARELY AVERTING 2-3 REAR END COLLISIONS ALONG THE WAY). WHEN I PULLED INTO MY DRIVE WAY AND ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT THE CAR FROM DRIVE (D) TO PARK (P), I WAS UNABLE TO ADVANCE THE SHIFTER PASSED REVERSE (R). I HAD TO PLACE THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL (N) AND ENGAGE THE HANDBRAKE. I RETRIEVED A FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER TO ENGAGE THE SHIFT LOCK ON THE SHIFT CONSOLE AND PLACED THE VEHICLE INTO PARK (P). AFTER LEARNING OF THIS ISSUE, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP, WHO ADVISED ME THAT THE BRAKE SWITCH WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I PAID TO HAVE IT REPLACED. A SHORT TIME LATER, I SAW THE PRESS RELEASE FROM HYUNDAI THAT SEVERAL VEHICLES WERE BEING RECALLED BECAUSE OF THIS EXACT ISSUE, THOUGH, AFTER CONTACTING THE DEALERSHIP AND HYUNDAI DIRECT, I LEARNED THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF THEIR CAMPAIGN. AS A DEGREED MECHANICAL ENGINEER, I MAINTAIN THAT THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE PART OF THE RECALL AND CONSIDER THIS TO BE A DESIGN FAULT OF THE VEHICLE. IF I HAD BEEN REAR ENDED, I COULD HAVE BEEN MET BY A LAWSUIT (NOT TO MENTIONED SUSTAINED AN INJURY) BECAUSE OF NOT FUNCTIONING BRAKE LIGHTS. I'VE MADE SEVERAL CONTACTS WITH HYUNDAI AND THEY WILL NOT BUDGE ON THEIR STANCE THAT THIS IS A DESIGN ISSUE. THERE MUST EITHER BE A FAIL SAFE TO ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS ARE FUNCTIONAL OR, AT THE VERY LEAST, AN ALARM ON THE OPERATOR CONSOLE ALERTING THE DRIVER THAT THE BRAKE SWITCH HAS STOPPED FUNCTIONING. HEARD SQUEALING AND GRINDING COMING FROM REAR BRAKES.REPLACED PADS AND LUBRICATED PINS, NOW 6/2013 HEAR THE SAME NOISE AGAIN AND THIS TIME PREMATURE WEAR OF THE PADS AND ROTORS ARE WARPED AND FALLING APART. ALSO LUG NUTS ARE RUSTED AND SWOLLEN (THIS AT 45000) JUST UNDER 14000 AFTER LAST REPLACEMENT. WHILE DRIVING HOME, I BRAKED TO TURN INTO MY NEIGHBORHOOD AND WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED. MY FRIEND WHOM WAS FOLLOWING ME STATED THAT MY REAR BRAKES DID NOT COME ON WHEN I BRAKE. AFTER THE ROTOR AND PADS WHERE REPLACED THE SAME PASSENGER READ WHEEL BEGAN TO BURN AND CAUSED A VERY PUNGENT ORDER. LARGE AMOUNTS OF BRAKE DUST ALSO BEGAN TO COLLECT ON THE WHEEL. HEARD NOISE FROM BRAKES AND THOUGHT IT WAS FRONT PADS.CHANGED FRONT PADS BUT IT DID NOT SOLVE PROBLEM. TOOK BACK TIRES OFF TO CHECK BRAKES AND MUCH TO MY SURPRISE THERE WAS HARDLY ANY PADS LEFT. CHANGED PADS AND THAT STOPPED THE NOISE ONLY TO HAVE TO BRING MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE DO TO THE FACT THAT THE CALIPERS WERE NOT RELEASING. THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR 2 DAYS AND SAID THAT CALIPERS WERE BAD. THEY HAD TO PUT NEW BRAKES ON(MINE WERE ONLY ON A WEEK) TURN THE ROTORS AND SAID MY BRAKE FLUID WAS CONTAMINATED. 10 YR 100000 MILE WARRANTY PLUS BOUGHT EXTENDED WARRANTY AND I STILL HAD TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THEY CALL NORMAL WEAR. NOTHING NORMAL ABOUT THAT!ALSO WANTED TO DRAIN OLD BRAKE FLUID AND CHARGE 129.99 FOR SOMETHING THEY HAD TO DO WHEN THEY PUT NEW CALIPERS ON ANY WAY BY BLEEDING THE LINES. THEN TO CHARGE 110.00 TO TURN THE ROTORS. I ARGUED AND EVERYONE I TALKED TO SAID THIS IS GUIDE LINES WE HAVE TO FOLLOW. I CANT BELIEVE THERE IS NOT A RECALL ON THIS .I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS COMPLAINED ABOUT BACK BRAKES CAUSING PROBLEMS ON SONATAS. I PURCHASED MY 2009 SONATA IN MARCH OF 2012 AT THE LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP, WITH ABOUT 44K ON IT. EVERYTHING WAS CHECKED OFF AND CONFIRMED AS IN GOOD WORKING ORDER. A HISTORY REPORT SHOWED THE BRAKES BEING REPLACED LAST AT 41K MILES. I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR ITS 60K CHECKUP AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THE REAR BRAKES ARE SHOT, AND EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE REPLACED...PADS, CALIPERS, ROTORS, ETC. IT HADN'T MADE A GRINDING NOISE OR ANYTHING AT THAT POINT, SO I DECIDED TO TAKE IT TO A CERTIFIED MECHANIC I USUALLY GO TO. HE CONFIRMED EVERYTHING AND SAID ALL TOLD THE REPAIR IS GOING TO COST ME ROUGHLY $800!!! HE ALSO TOLD ME IT WAS A BIG ISSUE THEY SEE ONLY ON HYUNDAI'S, AND THAT THERE IS NO WAY THE REAR BRAKES SHOULD EVER GO BEFORE THE FRONT BRAKES NEED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH FORCE THAT IS NEEDED TO BRAKE THE FRONT OF THE CAR COMPARED TO THE REAR. SO DID RESEARCH AND FIND OUT THAT THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO REPLACING MY ENTIRE REAR BRAKE SYSTEM EVERY 15-20K MILES. I HAD MY REAR BRAKES AND ROTORS REPLACES IN FEBRUARY 2012 AT AROUND 60K MILES. IN OCTOBER 2012 AGAIN MY CAR FELT LIKE IT WAS DRAGGING AND I HEARD THE TELL TALE SQUEALING OF THE BRAKES SO I TOOK IT BACK TO THE REPAIR SHOP TO BE TOLD MY REAR BRAKES AND ROTORS AGAIN WERE WORN OUT AND CHEWED THROUGH, AND NO THAT MY CALIPERS HAD SEIZED AND I WOULD NEED TO PAY YET AGAIN TO HAVE THIS ISSUE REPAIRED. THE MECHANIC MADE A COMMENT THAT THE ONLY TIME HE'D EVER SEEN THIS BEFORE WAS FROM YOUNG PEOPLE DOING "POWER SLIDES" ON THEIR CARS, SOMETHING I WOULD NEVER DO (I AM 28 YEARS OLD). UPON RESEARCH I FIND THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM WHEN SEARCHING ONLINE FOR BREAK PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR FOR MODEL YEARS 2006-2010, ENOUGH THAT THERE IS EVEN A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IN NEW YORK. TOLD US THE BRAKE PADS WERE WORN AND WAS SCRAPING METAL TO METAL.HE TOWED US HOME FOR $25.00 WHEN WE GOT HOME WE CALLED ROADSIDE SERVICE THEY TOWED IT NAPLETON HYUNDAI IN CALUMET CITY ILL WE PURCHASED THE CAR FROM, FAMILY HYNUDAI 8101 W 159TH ST TINLEY PARK ILL THE VEHICLE WAS A USED TRADE IN WITH 39,736 MILES PURCHASE DATE WAS 2/18/2012. UPON INSPECTION AT NAPLETON HYUNDAI WE WERE TOLD THAT THE LEFT REAR BRAKE PAD HAD HUNG UP IN HOLDER AND THAT WE NEEDED TO REPLACE IT AND ROTOR. THE RIGHT PADS WERE FINE AND HARDLY ANY WEAR AT ALL WE WERE TOLD THE WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER THAT. WHY SHOULD ONE SIDE GO BAD AND NOT THE OTHER. UNLESS THERE IS A DEFECT SOME WHERE. *TR

I PURCHASED MY 2009 HYUNDAI SONATA IN AUGUST 2009. IN DECEMBER 2011 I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER FOR A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND ASKED THAT THE BRAKES BE LOOKED AT BECAUSE THEY WERE SQUEAKING AND THE PEDAL FELT SOFT. I WAS NOT SURE WHAT THE MILEAGE WAS BUT I THINK IT WAS AT 34K. I WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED REAR AND FRONT BRAKES. I WAS TOLD MY REAR BRAKES WERE COMPLETELY GONE AND MY FRONT BRAKES WERE AT 30 TO 40%. DUE TO FINANCIAL REASONS, I HAD THEM FIX THE REAR BRAKES THAT DAY AND TOOK THE CAR BACK TO HAVE THE FRONT BRAKES FIXED IN MARCH 2012. SINCE THAT TIME THE PEDAL IS STILL SOFT AND WHEN I AM DRIVING IN CITY TRAFFIC THE CAR STOPS LIKE I NEED BRAKE, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE PAID $400 IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS FOR NEW BRAKES. I HAVE ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION HAD TO PULL OFF THE ROAD FOR FEAR THAT I WOULD HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. AFTER AN EXHAUSTIVE FIGHT WITH THE DEALER I WAS BASICALLY TOLD THIS WAS THE DESIGN OF THE CAR. I CONSIDER THIS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE AND I GUESS IT WILL BE LIKE THE TOYOTA AND/OR FIRESTONE INCIDENT. IN REGARDS TO MY VEHICLES REAR DISC BRAKES. FROM MY EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION IT IS VERY UNUSUAL FOR YOUR REAR BRAKE PADS TO WEAR OUT BEFORE THE FRONT DO. DO TO WEIGHT AND INERTIAL PUSHING HARDER ON THE FRONT BRAKES ( THIS VEHICLE IS MUCH MORE HEAVIER IN THE FRONT THAN THE BACK). MY REAR PADS WORE OUT BEFORE AND FROM SOME RESEARCH IN FORUMS ON MY MODEL CAR OTHERS HAVE HAD SAME EXPERIENCE. I BELIEVE THERE IS A DEFECT HERE AND IT MIGHT INVOLVE THE PROPORTIONING VALVE SENDING TOO MUCH PRESSURE TO THE REAR CALIPERS IN COMPARISON TO THE FRONT CALIPERS. MIGHT OF BE AN ADJUSTMENT IN THE VALVE THAT IS CAUSING ISSUE. I WOULD LIKE AN INVESTIGATION INTO ISSUE .
