I bought this car from someone in April of 2024 and the person who i bought it from said everything was perfectly fine, they brought it to the Hyundai dealership and according to the mechanic there the engine was fine….i have taken care of the engine since i bought the car, kept up with oil changes and everything….until a few days ago when the whole thing ceased up on me while driving down the road to my sons school. I wasnt going fast either, the speed limit is 40mph where i was when it happened, but I’m glad i have quick reflexes because otherwise we would have wrecked the car. Everything shut off on me and now its knocking. There is alot of metal shavings in my oil and my mechanic tried to drain it a few times to get the debris out of the oil but it does no good.
To Whom It May Concern, Subject: Formal Complaint – 2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS Tail Light Meltdown / Fire Hazard Date: August 3, 2025 I am writing to formally report a serious safety issue with my 2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS, specifically concerning the tail light assembly, which has melted and poses a potential fire hazard and traffic safety risk. Approximately a year and a half ago, I noticed melting in the tail light housing and took the vehicle to a Hyundai dealership to address the issue. At that time, the car had approximately 208,000 miles. Despite the obvious manufacturing defect and safety implications, the dealership refused to repair or inspect the issue without charging a $275 inspection fee, stating the vehicle was out of warranty. I believe this to be an unfair and irresponsible business practice. Tail light assemblies should not melt under normal use, and such a defect could lead to: Electrical fires Brake light failure (increasing the risk of rear-end collisions) Potential traffic citations for inoperative brake lights Damage to other vehicles or individuals I have already notified Hyundai Motor Corporation about this issue, placing them on notice that should any damages or incidents occur as a result of this defect, they may be held liable. This is not a minor cosmetic issue but a major safety defect, and I strongly urge the NHTSA to investigate whether this is an isolated issue or part of a wider trend affecting Hyundai and Kia vehicles. If so, a safety recall may be warranted. I also intend to report this situation to the Indiana Attorney General's Office as a matter of consumer protection and product safety. I have been backwards and forwards with the Hyundai Corporation Via and Emails...... I look forward to a prompt response. Please!
I was gifted the car for graduation and immediately my brakes weren’t working right my interior electrical stopped working and my window switches stopped working as well as my lights for my car all went out including the brake lights changing the bulbs didn’t help and my check engine light stays on at all times.
When I have my headlights turned on, and am driving my headlights flicker on and off. It mostly happens when I use the turn signal, but not always. sometimes it happens when I hit bumps. The headlights and the dash lights all go out when this happens, it usually lasts from 1 to 20 seconds at a time. I have taken it to my local garage(straight and clear) and they tested all electrical components and replaced the alternator and I still have the issue. They looked it up and determined that this is a known issue with the Hyundai Sonata, and one of the modules needs replaced in the steering column. This is a major safety issue because my headlights go out when driving and could cause and accident, and depending on the exact issue of the module it could cause a fire. There are no warning lights, just the lights go on and off. I will be getting the car repaired around November 9th 2023, because I need my car to be safe, and can submit my invoice at that time if this becomes a recall.
The brake lights stay on all the time, thus preventing vehicles behind mine from knowing if I'm actually stopping. Hence, they may stop without reason, and endanger drivers behind them. The manufacturer has likely known of this being an issue in Sonatas from, at least, 2007 through 2013 models. The manufacturer is putting the task of solving the problem (if that's even possible), upon a dealer. And, my trip to that (nearest) dealership (75 miles away) creates its own danger. The danger is added to by a pre-existing unsolved issue of the horn not functioning. As per the brake light issue, I've been to the dealership about it twice, and they weren't even aware that the brake light switch they think attaches to my car doesn't. So, I wonder if the manufacturer tried to address the issue in the middle of the 2011 model year, installed a different model switch and wiring on more newly built cars in that model year, and decided to ignore the owners of vehicles sold earlier in that model year. As for an additional related issue, unless I disconnect my battery when not in the car. the lights stay on and run down the battery. That can contribute to its own safety issue.
My right brake light has melted my housing due to the bulb getting too hot and my cruise control suddenly stopped working one day the light comes on but when I go to hit the set button it doesn't set or activate
My brake lights constantly go out new bulbs don't work either...it sems to be a malfunction in the wiring for the lights. The seatbelt on driver side will not latch no matter what. All electrical has issues, dash will go in and out as well as radio and heating/ac lights.
Brake light housing has melted and deformed so that the bulb is stuck in the tail light assembly and cannot be changed. Without working brake lights the car is unsafe to be driven on the road. I’m assuming there is an electrical problem that caused the lights to overheat and melt the housing. This is a common complaint with this make and model based on my research. The socket also does not lock into the assembly due to the deformed housing. My daughter is the owner of the vehicle and made me aware of the issue today.
I have had replaced my taillight bulbs 8 times in the last year. They keep blowing out and getting so hot they melt the taillight assembly. I replaced the whole assembly a couple months ago and it is already melted so bad the light bulb will not fit properly or stay in place. This is a fire hazard and also a safety hazard as my taillights quit working at anytime.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the headlights ceased to operate as designed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the headlight bulbs were replaced three times within a month; however, the failure persisted. The NHTSA has filed a Consent Order (RQ17-004) for a Engine Replacement due to safety concerns while driving the vehicle on the road, Vehicle may stall and cause / be involved in a accident. Please make this recall public so the affected vehicles can be properly repaired as the Consent Order states I have reviewed the Consent Order and I will not continue to drive this vehicle, I will not risk being involved in a accident The Hyundai dealership in Alexandria Virginia has refused to repair this recall under the Consent Order, My vehicle Vin# is [XXX] My vehicle has been at this dealership location for over 3 weeks and I was told that they were not going to perform this recall and I noted that If I pick up my vehicle and drive it away and the engine fails, stalls or stops in the middle of the highway and I survive I will have to file a lawsuit in this matter and the dealership still told me to pick up my vehicle. 2020 wiring harness overheated and melted - replaced taillight 6 times in 1 year. Hyundai fixed. 2021 tailight out again - Hyundai stated the taillight assembly melted, needs to be replaced (403.00) light bulb cannot be replaced (warped). Safety issue is what is causing things to heat up and melt. Many others reported same issue online - Hyundai is not taking ownership to fix whatever is causing this? No warning lamps.
when driving randomly the cars engine will rev really high while pressing the gas pedal but the car doesn't move. After a little while the car eventually makes a loud clunking noise which shakes the car and typically causes the tires to spin. It seems to happen when the car is trying to decide whether to switch the gas engine or back to EV mode. This has been happening for a long time an even after the engine was replace under the recall. This is a safety issue that causes major concerns for myself an passengers. Also it happen when turning onto highways or exits which at high speeds there is a high likelihood of causing an accident. I have reported this to Hyundai several times but they cannot figure out the cause but rather keep trying different things an charging me. the car also seems to burn oil fast which doesn't make any sense being that its a newly installed engine.
I have had to replace my brake lights, sometimes, every few months. My third brake light only works intermittently. Recently, my brake lights and my door lights failed to shut off after I turned the engine off. Also, my abs light came on on the dash, but after turning the engine off and back on, that light went out. After re-starting my car and repeatedly, stepping on the brake, my lights finally shut off. I checked the internet for similar problems and found out that there had been a Hyundai recall for this issue. I phoned Hyundai customer support. They told me the recall had been repaired on my car by the dealer . Obviously, it had not. (The dealer also claimed to have corrected another recall regarding seat belts, but that too is a lie, since my seat belt dash light is on although I have never been involved in an accident) I believe that the dealer billed Hyundai, but failed to either deliberately or inadvertently failed to perform the recall work. The recall involved replacing the brake stopper pad which engages the brake light switch. Obviously, Hyundai considered this a safety issue since the brake lights are always on, so the driver behind my car never knows what I'm doing. This has also affected the interior overhead light which only intermittently goes off when I close the door, so I have to keep the light in the off position.
The vehicle dash and center console lights flicker and/or dim between bright and dim lights while the headlights temporarily turn off at random intervals while driving. This random, but frequent occurrence happens often when applying the turn signal in either direction. The problem generally exist between 1 to 5 seconds, causing impaired driving during nighttime operation. The turn signal appears to work as expected during the electrical issue. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. This safety issue can impair nighttime driving visibility which can result in an accident, distracted driving to the primary vehicle driver and other motorists, and false driving signals to other drivers. This issue has been reproduced by an authorized Hyundai dealer and other drivers with similar Hyundai Sonata GLS model years. All the electrical on the drivers side conti ues to fail. The blinker on the driver side only works if the headlights are on and the brake/blinker lights constantly go out even though the bulbs are fine.
break lights burn out in less than 3 months after replacing the light bulb
I can’t drive my car in the dark. This has been on going since I bought the car and has just gotten worse. Everytime I turn my lights on all of my rear lights stop working and if I’m driving and the back light stop working my gas peddle also will not let me accelerate until I let my foot off and go back on to it but at this point I have no tail lights or brake lights.. I’ve tried so many things to fix this but this is a serious issue I had another friend who bought the same car and sold it a week later because of the same issue. I also can open my trunk and wiggle the wires and it’s a whole light show back there.
My passenger rear brake light will not come on after car has been in repair shop 11 times to correct issue. They have replaced the bulb, socket, light wiring harness, fuse etc. The brake light will work for a very short time after repair shop, but then go out again.
The taillight socket is melting disabling the effective use of the brake system to alert other drivers the vehicle is stopping. The light works but can not be reinserted into the given space because it has melted close on the tailight cause my entire tail light to have to be replaced. The light bulb then melted into the trunk space and could have caused a fire but luckily we smelled it and moved the placement. I have almost been rear ending multiple times cause long the oncoming driver to swerve off the road to avoid hitting me because they were not able to see I was stopped. I have been stopped by law enforcement and given a warning thankfully. I have sent a complaint to hyundai and have seen multiple complaints and myself seen multiple sonatas on the road with no tail light/brake light issues. My dealer wants to charge over $600-1000 to repair this imperative issue. There was no indication they were malfunctioning until they had melted into the socket. On both lights. I have read multiple complaints on this same issue. This is an important part of the car that needs to be fixed for driver safety.

I have replaced my front driver door actuator, the back driver and front passenger side 3x and it’s still having issues. I replaced all fuses an wiring harness. Front headlights keep blowing out after about a week of putting in new ones.
Brake lights have been needed to be replaced multiple times a year, since I purchased the car. Now this past year I have had to replace my break lights more often and noticed the port that holds the light appears to be burnt. So after I noticed the situation, I googled to see if there were any recalls and there have been, but my dealership advised me that my car had no recall for the break lights but had other recalls (which nothing was ever sent to me stating any recalls). Also be advised approximately every 5 hyundai sonata has a break light out. I am EXTREMELY upset that there has not been a recall for the break lights and also upset that the dealer charged $115.00 for two break light bulbs and “labor”) and why was I not aware of recalls on my vehicle until I went into the dealership with a problem.
my passenger headlight continuously goes out. I also have where my headlights completely go out as well as my interior lights. there is nothing out of the ordinary when it happens. Sometimes it will do it when I use a turn signal, other times just on it's own. I will have it happen very frequently and then not again for months. I also have the taillight burn out very often
Everything worked good until I had to take my car to the dealer for knock sensor, air bag check, software update, and my engine was also part of the affected engine recall... well ever since then I have had to replace my car battery a few times and now I just invested in a battery charger because now my cars battery gets drained whether or not I use it? I asked the dealer on a couple of occasions to check out why my dash and lights flicker and shut off and come back on seconds later when I turn my lights on at night? also told the service writer that I noticed this happening when I used my turn signal, because I could notice the dash lights and head beams behave erratic and most dangerously? I know I was told more than once that they could not find nothing wrong and there were no codes either? I have to disconnect my battery now because of this dangerous issue and just gets very frustrating that now I have a car that sits there in my car port more than its driven nowadays but because car prices are high I really need my car repaired so that it could work safely like it used to before. I'm afraid that my car will catch on fire because of this and just wished that Hyundai Motor Corporation would look into this matter more seriously and more importantly find a solution for this big safety mater. I just finally got tired of all this that I have to go through and still probably wont ever hear of a safety recall for this big problem...
All of the light wither short out or burn out all the time. I always have an out tail light . I’ve bought replacements at the dealer as well as auto zone. I have noticed many people also have this problem. We get tickets in California for this and half time I don’t even know it’s our because I just changed it 2 months ago. This is not normal and I have all of me receipts and could potentially get someone rear ended they short out it’s very strange !!!
Several people we know have the same issue as we do...the brake light wiring harness shorts out and keeps the lights from working and you can smack the side of the fender and it will work for a little while and go back off....my car was already inspected for this issue and it is an electrical issue. The headlights on our friends cars does it also.
Well my break lights keep burning out the whole harness and light part were the bulbs go burns and melted the harness completely on both sides I have had to replace them twice for both break lights The satellite antenna on the roof of the car is completely out and doesn’t get a signal The key keeps getting stuck in the ignition where the battery had to be disconnected to remove it

THE MANUFACTURER HAD YET TO BE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD YET TO BE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
MY VIN IS SHOWING 2 RECALLS THAT ARE INCOMPLETE THAT I HAVE TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO BE CORRECTED. MY 2011 HYUNDAI BURNS OIL VERY QUICKLY WITHIN WEEKS OF AN OIL CHANGE. THE FRONT BUMPER AND GRILL HAVE PARTIALLY DETACHED FROM BROKEN OR FAULTY CLIPS, WHEELS ORIGINAL SIZE RUB AGAINST WHEEL WELL COVERING AND CONSTANT SENSOR FAILURE FOR TIRE API. ACTUAL SPEED IS LOWER THEN THE SPEED INDICATED ON THE VEHICLE WHERE AS 55 MPH ACTUAL SPEED SHOWS 59 ON THE GAGE. CRUIS CONTROL WILL NOT WORK AND TRACTION CONTROL WILL NOT TURN OFF, AFTER REPLACEMENT OF ALL TIRES AND SENSORS. EXTERIOR- HEAD LIGHTS NEED REPLACED EVERY 2 TO 3 MONTHS DUE TO FAILURE, BREAK LIGHTS REPLACED 6X IN 4 MONTHS AND WIRING HARNESS TO BREAKLIGHTS HAS PARTIALLY MELTED THE CASING AND ENTRY SPOT FOR BULB. REPLACEMENT BULB DIDN'T REMEDY THE PROBLEM, AS BREAK LIGHTS NOW DO NOT WORK AT ALL ON VEHICLE, ONLY TAIL LIGHTS. FOG LIGHT HAVE ALSO BEEN REPLACED 1X IM 1 YEAR AND 1 IS OUT. REAR PLATE LIGHT ALSO NOT WIRING. FUSES ARE GOOD. POSSIBLE WIRING ISSUE. FAULTY BODY ISSUE AND POSSIBLE COMPUTER AND OR SENSOR ISSUE.

I AM CONSISTENTLY HAVING TO REPLACE MY TAIL AND BRAKE LIGHTS ON BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE EVERY 2-6 MONTHS. I JUST REPLACED THE BULBS IN JULY AND NOW IN SEPTEMBER, THEY'RE BAD AGAIN. BUT NOW EVEN WITH NEW BULBS IN, THE TAIL LIGHTS DO NOT WORK BUT THE BRAKE LIGHTS DO. I AM ALSO HAVING AN ISSUE WITH THE INTERIOR DOME LIGHT NOT TURNING OFF WHILE SET ON THE "DOOR" SETTING WITH ALL DOORS CLOSED. FOR THIS, I HAVE CHECKED THE DOOR JAMB SWITCH AND THE INSIDE OF THE DOME LIGHT SWITCH AND THERE ARE NO OBVIOUS CAUSES FOR THIS ISSUE. I'M NOT SURE IF THESE LIGHT PROBLEMS ARE CONNECTED OR NOT, BUT THE DOME LIGHT WORKED PERFECTLY FINE UNTIL I REPLACED MY TAIL/BRAKE LIGHT BULBS YESTERDAY AND DISCOVERED THAT THEY AREN'T WORKING AT ALL.

THE FIRST PROBLEM IS ABOUT THE HEADLIGHTS WHEN TURNING THE CAR ON WHETHER IT IS STATIONARY OR IN MOTION, THE HEADLIGHTS INTERMITTENTLY BLINKING OR CUTTING OFF SHORTLY WHICH IS DANGEROUS WHEN DRIVING IN DARK. THE PROBLEM MAY BE RELATED TO THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH. THE SECOND PROBLEM IS RELATED TO THE BATTERY, THE BATTERY ON THIS CAR, 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS, CAN NOT LAST LONG AND IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED EVERY COUPLE OF MONTHS. THE PROBLEM IS RELATED TO PARASITIC ELECTRICITY IN THIS MODEL AS THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME. IT MIGHT BE CAUSED BY ELECTRICITY DRAINAGE ON THE RADIO PART. THE THIRD COMMON PROBLEM IN THIS MODEL IS THE OVERHEATING ENGINE. I REALIZED THE RADIATOR FAN IS NOT WORKING UNTIL I STOP THE CAR, OPEN THE HOOD, AND THEN GIVE THE FAN BLADES A PUSH! ALSO, THE FAN CAN TURN ON BY ITSELF ONLY IF I TURN ON THE AC ON HIGH BLOWING LEVEL.

I'M CONCERNED THAT THERE'S A ELECTRICAL ISSUE.

FIRST, MY LOW BEAMS QUIT WORKING MONTHS AGO. BULBS ARE GOOD. I EVEN TOOK IT IN TO A SHOP TO HAVE IT CHECKED. THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING AND THAT IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE. THAT MAKES SENSE SINCE I JUST STARTED HAVING ISSUES WITH THE DOME LIGHTS INSIDE AS WELL. HAVE TO HAVE THE INSIDE LIGHTS TURNED OFF OR THEY WILL NOT GO OFF. MOST RECENTLY, ON THE HIGHWAY ON MY WAY TO WORK, MY CAR LOST POWER AND THE DASH LIT UP WITH LIGHTS AND I HAD TO PULL OVER. STARTED MAKING A LOUD CLANGING NOISE AS WELL. TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AGAIN TO GET IT LOOKED AT. THEY SAID MY OIL WAS ALMOST GONE. NO OIL ON THE DIPSTICK. I JUST RECENTLY HAD THE OIL CHANGED! SHOULD NOT BE OUT OF OIL. THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE PERSONNEL INFORMED ME THAT THE WHOLE SOCKET WHERE THE LIGHT BULB SITS IN HAD MELTED. THIS CAUSED ALOT OF EROSION IN THE BULB SOCKET AND AFFECTED THE WIRING AS WELL. THE STOPPER FIXED THIS ISSUE BUT I WAS ALSO ADVISED THAT I HAD TO REPLACE THE WHOLE REAR LIGHT MODULE BECAUSE THE WIRES HAD MELTED TOGETHER THIS TIME IT WAS THE LEFT SIDE. IN OCTOBER I RELAXED THE WHOLE RIGHT SIDE REAR LIGHTING MODULE BECAUSE THE WIRES HAD MELTED TOGETHER IN THAT LIGHT TOO! ALL OF THESE REPAIRS TOOK PLACE WITHIN A YEARS TIMEFRAME. THIS PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WHEN TURNING ON THE BLINKER OR EVEN WHEN THE TURN STALK RETURNS TO OFF AFTER COMPLETING THE TURN. IT APPEARS TO BE A SHORT OR BAD CONTACT IN THE TURN SIGNAL AND SEEMS TO ONLY HAPPEN WHEN THE TURN STALK IS ACTUALLY BEING MOVED OR MANIPULATED. THIS CAUSES THE HEADLIGHTS TO FLASH OR BLINK ON THE HIGH BEAMS AND WHEN THEY MOMENTARILY GO TO THE OFF POSITION THE DASH LIGHTS GO TO FULL INTENSITY (JUST LIKE DURING THE DAY WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE OFF).

I PARK IN PRETTY SAFE AREAS AND IN AN UNDERGROUND GARAGE AT HOME. HE HAD TO EPOXY THE ASSEMBLY SO IT WOULDN'T FALL OUT. KNOWS MY CAR INTIMATELY. TODAY, WHILE HAVING IT WASHED, I SAW THE WORKERS POINTING TO THE PASSENGER REAR TAILLIGHT ASSEMBLY. IT HAD POPPED OUT JUST LIKE THE OTHER ONE. I DUCT TAPED IT BEST I CAN. OWNED SEVERAL CARS BUT HAVE NEVER HAD ANY TAILLIGHTS THREATEN TO FALL OFF. MECHANIC SAID IT COULD EASILY FALL OFF IF I HIT A BUMP. VERY STRANGE!

I THEN CONTACTED HYUNDAI USA WHEN THEY FINALLY CONTACTED ME BACK THEY PRETTY MUCH TOLD ME THE SAME THING THE HYUNDAI DEALER SAID. THE PROBLEM WITH MY LIGHTS BEGAN IN 2012 BUT EVERY TIME IT TOOK THE CAR IN THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DETECTED SO THEY WOULD SAY AND THIS WAS WHEN I WAS UNDER MY WARRANTY.

SO FOR A WEEK I LOOKED INTO ALL THE RECALLS THIS VEHICLE HAS BUT IT WAS PAST THE 5 DAY RETURN POLICY BY DRIVETIME. WE FIGURED IF IT WAS A RECALL THEN IT WOULD HAVE TO BE REPAIRED BY LAW, RIGHT? SO I PUT MY VIN # IN TO VERIFY THAT INDEED MY VEHICLE WAS PART OF NUMEROUS RECALLS, SO I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR RECALL 132 AT VANDERGRIFF HYUNDAI IN ARLINGTON, TX. BEFORE THEY EVEN LOOKED AT THE CAR THEY SAID THAT CAMPAIGN WAS "CLOSED" & SAID THEY COULDN'T ASSIST ME ANY FURTHER. THE CONNECTOR AND BULB GOT SO HOT THAT SURROUNDING PLASTIC AND CONNECTOR PLASTIC MELTED, CAUSING THE BRAKE LIGHT TO FAIL AND MAKING REPLACEMENT COST AROUND $650. THE PROBLEM ALSO CAUSED A FUSE TO SHORT OUT AND THE BRAKE SENSOR UNDER THE PADDLE FAILED (WHICH IS ALREADY AN ONGOING ISSUE CURRENTLY BEING RECALLED FOR SONATA'S ) AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START. HYUNDAI DEALER CLAIM REPLACEMENT BULBS WERE PUT IN WRONG WHEN CHANGED OUT WHICH CAUSED THE PROBLEM, BUT I FIND THAT HARD TO BELIEVE. I DECIDED TO DO A LITTLE RESEARCH AND FOUND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM. I AGREE THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED BY NHTSA. THEY REPLACED THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR, SENDING UNIT, BRAKE SWITCH, BRAKE SWITCH STOPPER, AND TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY. THEY COULD NOT TELL HER OR ME WHAT THE ROOT CAUSE WAS FOR THIS ELECTRICAL ISSUE THAT NEARLY CAUSED A ACCIDENT.

THE ONLY THING HOLDING THE HOUSING ASSEMBLY ONTO THE CAR WAS THE TAILLIGHT WIRE ASSEMBLY. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE IN ANY WAY. NO SURFACE SCRATCHES. NO BODY DAMAGE. IT APPEARS THAT THE PLASTIC SHATTERED FROM CRACKS INCURRED AT INSTALLATION WHEN OVERLY TIGHTENED AT FACTORY AND/OR NORMAL VIBRATION OF THE VEHICLE.

A DETERMINATION WAS MADE BY SOMEONE WHO HAD NOT EVEN SEEN THE VEHICLE TO DENY WARRANTY WORK DUE TO DAMAGE. THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO MY CAR! THE DEALER OFFERED TO INSTALL THE TAILLIGHT AT NO CHARGE IF I WOULD BUY THE PART. I DIDN'T FEEL THAT I SHOULD PAY $182 FOR A NEW TAILLIGHT AND THEY OFFERED TO FIND ME ONE USED. AFTER INSPECTING THE DEFECTIVE HOUSING, COMPLAINTANT SURMISED THAT HYUNDAI TAIL LIGHT HOUSING IS MADE OF HARD, BRITTLE PLASTIC, WHICH SHATTERS WHEN OVERLY TIGHTENED AT FACTORY, OR DUE TO THE VIBRATION OF THIS OVERLY HARD RIDING VEHICLE. THE THREADED PORTION OF THE ASSEMBLY HAD BROKEN OFF AND WAS STILL ATTACHED TO THE BOLTS THAT HOLD THE ASSEMBLY TO THE BODY OF THE CAR. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR WHAT I THOUGHT WOULD BE A WARRANTY REPAIR. I RECIEVED A CALL FROM THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE SAYING THAT BOTH TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLIES WERE BROKEN. SHE BELIEVED THAT SOMEONE ATTEMPTED TO STEAL THE ASSSEMBLYS. SHE SAID THERE IS A SMALL MARK NEAR ONE OF THE LENS. THIS IS SOMETHING I FAILED TO NOTICE AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE CLOSELY. I HAD THEM PUT BOTH LENSES ON BECAUSE THE CAR WAS DUE FOR A STATE INSPECTION. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE SHOWED ME THE MARKS SHE BELIEVED WERE CAUSED BY SOMEONE ATTEMPTING TO PRY THE LENSES OFF THE VEHICLE. THERE ARE TWO SMALL HAIR LINE SCRATCHES ON THE PAINT. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE BROKEN OFF BOLTS. I TOLD THE REPRESENTATIVE THAT SCRATCHES WERE MOST LIKELY CAUSED WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO PUSH THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY BACK INTO PLACE. I TOLD HER THAT THE FORCE NEEDED TO BREAK THE FOUR BOLTS OUT OF THE ASSEMBLY WOULD CAUSE MUCH MORE DAMAGE TO THE CAR AND THAN TWO SMALL HAIR LINE SCRATCHES ON THE PAINT. ANYONE ATTEMPTING TO STEAL A TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY IN THIS MANNER KNOWS IT WOULD RENDER THE PART UNUSABLE. I TOOK ONE OF MY TWO 2011 SONATAS TO A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IN WOODBRIDGE VIRGINIA BECAUSE THE RIGHT TAIL LENS WAS COMPLETELY BROKEN AND HANGING OFF THE CAR. THE BOLTS HOLDING THE TAIL LENS TO THE BODY WERE STILL IN THE BODY WITH THE PLASTIC THREAD PORTION OF THE LENS. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE WARRANTY BECAUSE THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF MARKS ON THE CAR THAT WOULD INDICATE THE FORCE REQUIRED TO BREAK A TAIL LENS. I BELIEVE THE LENS WERE INSTALLED IMPROPERLY AND THE STRESS FINALLY CAUSED THE PLASTIC TO BREAK. TO MY SURPRISE I GOT A CALL FROM THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE SAYING THE LEFT LENS WAS BROKEN AS WELL. SHE SAID THEY BELIEVE SOMEONE ATTEMPTED TO STEAL THE LENS. SHE SAID THERE IS A SMALL MARK NEAR ONE OF THE LENS. I DID NOT NOTICE THE MARK WHEN I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE. HOWEVER, IF IT WAS SO SMALL FOR ME TO NOTICE THERE IS NO WAY SOMEONE COULD HAVE ATTEMPTED TO PRY OFF THE LENS WITH ENOUGH FORCE TO BEAK 4 LARGE BOLTS WITHOUT LEAVING A HIGHLY NOTICEABLE MARK (S) ON THE CAR. THE MARKS SHE IS REFERRING COULD HAVE BEEN FROM MY ATTEMPT TO PUSH THE LENS BACK INTO THE HOUSING SO THAT I COULD DRIVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. I HAVE A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. I HAD MY BRAKE PEDAL STOPLIGHT SWITCH REPLACED A FEW DAYS AGO BY A HYUNDAI DEALER, WHICH WAS COVERED UNDER THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY. HOWEVER, IN DOING RESEARCH ON THIS REPLACEMENT, I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM OF HYUNDAI SONATA OWNERS AND IT WOULD SEEM THAT HYUNDAI HAS NOT CORRECTED THIS ISSUE OTHER THEN TO REPLACE THE OEM SWITCH WHEN IT FAILS. BASED UPON WHAT I HAVE READ, I THEREFORE EXPECT THAT THIS REPLACEMENT WILL FAIL AGAIN SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE AND PROBABLY AT AN INOPPORTUNE TIME. SINCE IT TAKES ONLY A FEW MOMENTS TO REPLACE THE SWITCH, SOME HYUNDAI OWNERS THAT HAVE HAD MULTIPLE FAILURES HAVE GONE AS FAR AS CARRYING A SPARE SWITCH IN THEIR GLOVE COMPARTMENT IN CASE THE SWITCH FAILS AGAIN AND THEY ARE EITHER OUT OF WARRANTY OR NOT NEAR A DEALER. THE SAFETY ISSUE REVOLVES AROUND THE FAILURE OF THIS SWITCH WHICH RESULTS IN THE BRAKE LIGHTS NOT BEING OPERABLE AND THE POSSIBILITY OF OTHER SAFETY SYSTEMS BEING AFFECTED TOO, I.E. TRACTION CONTROL AND ABS. IF THIS SWITCH FAILURE OCCURS WITH THE VEHICLE IN PARK, THE GEARSHIFT LEVER CANNOT BE MOVED. IF THIS FAILURE WAS A "ONCE IN A LIFETIME" FAILURE, IT WOULD NOT BE THAT MUCH OF AN ISSUE. BUT AGAIN, THAT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE THE CASE AND RESEARCH OF HYUNDAI'S REPAIR RECORDS OR STATEMENTS MADE BY OWNERS OF THESE CARS SHOULD BARE THAT OUT. THE ORIGINAL OEM SWITCH PART IS #93810-3S000. AN ALLEGED UPDATE MAY BE PART # 93810-3K000 BUT THIS PART CAN NOT BE INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLES HAVING THE ORIGINAL PART AND HYUNDAI HAS NOT MADE A RETRO INSTALLATION POSSIBLE IF THIS "K" SWITCH IS INDEED AN UPDATED REPLACEMENT. I HAVE CALLED THREE DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS SERVICE DEPARTMENTS AND THEY ALL SAY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH CAUSING THE TCS WARNING LIGHT TO COME ON. I'VE CONTACTED THE DEALER AND HAVE GOTTEN THE RUN AROUND ABOUT WHAT CAUSED THE ISSUE. I HAVEN'T BEEN INVOLVED IN ANY TYPE OF ACCIDENT AND THERE IS NO VISIBLE DAMAGE TO THE EXTERIOR OF THE CAR. WHILE WALKING UP TO MY WIFE'S 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA IN A PARKING LOT, WE NOTICED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE TAIL LIGHT WAS DISLODGED FROM THE BODY OF THE CAR. THE ELECTRICAL WIRES WERE STILL ATTACHED TO THE TAIL LIGHT, BUT THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE BACK OF THE CAR OR THE TAIL LIGHT ITSELF. HOWEVER, WE DID SEE THE FOUR BOLT HOLDERS THAT ATTACH THE TAIL LIGHT TO THE BODY OF THE CAR HAD RUPTURED AND BROKE APART. WITHIN AN HOUR WE TOOK THE CAR TO OUR LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY HAD NEVER SEEN A DEFECT LIKE THIS. THEY INSISTED THAT THIS MUST HAVE BEEN DUE TO AN IMPACT, EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF DAMAGE TO THE TAIL LIGHT, THE BACK OF THE CAR OR ANY SIGNS OF VANDALISM. SINCE THEY FELT IT WAS DUE TO AN IMPACT (NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY), WE HAD TO PAY NEARLY $300 FOR THE TAIL LIGHT TO BE REPLACED. LATER THAT DAY, I NOTICED THE DRIVER SIDE TAIL LIGHT WAS BECOMING LOOSE TO THE TOUCH AS WELL. THE NEXT DAY MY WIFE CALLED THE CORPORATE LINE FOR HYUNDAI TO REPORT THIS TAIL LIGHT DEFECT AND REPORT THE DEALERSHIP WE WENT TO AS WELL. WITHIN 2 DAYS THE DEALERSHIP CALLED US BACK AND SAID THIS IS DEFINITELY SOME KIND OF DEFECT AND IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED BY OUR WARRANTY. THEY REFUNDED OUR MONEY AND ALSO REPLACED THE DRIVER SIDE TAIL LIGHT AT NO CHARGE. EVERY SONATA SHOULD HAVE THEIR TAIL LIGHTS CHECKED AND RECALLED (AT NO CHARGE) IF THESE DEFECTIVE BOLT HOLDERS CONTINUE TO BE FOUND AS BRITTLE AND FLIMSY AS OURS WERE. THANKFULLY THE TAIL LIGHT DID NOT FALL OFF OUR CAR WHILE WE WERE DRIVING OR IT WOULD HAVE BECOME A SERIOUS ROAD HAZARD. PLEASE BRING THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF ALL SONATA OWNERS IMMEDIATELY. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA AND IT IS A VERY NICE CAR EXCEPT THAT THERE IS A VERY REAL AND SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE WITH RESPECT TO THE VISIBILITY PROVIDED BY THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS. I HAVE NOTICED THAT A NUMBER OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVE EXPRESSED THEIR CONCERN ABOUT THIS AS WELL BECAUSE IT MAKES THE CAR VERY CHALLENGING TO DRIVE SAFELY AT NIGHT. WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING THE CAR AT NIGHT AND HAVE THE HEADLIGHTS ON LOW BEAM AS YOU LOOK THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD THERE IS A VERY DISTINCT BOUNDARY ABOUT MIDWAY UP THE WINDSHIELD AND EVERYTHING ABOVE THAT BOUNDARY LINE IS COMPLETELY DARK. IT NOT ONLY SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES THE DISTANCE THAT YOU TYPICALLY SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE IN FRONT OF YOU BUT IT IS ALSO EXTREMELY DISCONCERTING BECAUSE EVEN THE SLIGHTEST BUMP CAUSES THE LINE AND YOUR VISIBILITY TO BE BOUNCING UP AND DOWN. THE OTHER NIGHT I NEARLY HIT A PERSON WALKING ALONG THE ROAD EVEN THOUGH I WAS ONLY DRIVING 35 MILES PER HOUR BECAUSE I WAS ALMOST ON TOP OF THEM BEFORE THEY WERE VISIBLE IN THE HEADLIGHTS. UNABLE TO START THE VEHICLE (SINCE THAT REQUIRES BRAKE PEDAL TO BE PRESSED, AND BRAKE SWITCH FAILURE MEANS CAR DOESN'T KNOW PEDAL IS DEPRESSED), AND UNABLE TO SWITCH GEARS AT ALL FOR SAME REASON. THIS FAILURE HAS OCCURRED ON TWO SEPARATE HYUNDAI SONATAS I HAVE OWNED (A 2006 AND NOW A 2011) MORE THAN A DOZEN TIMES. THE MOST RECENT TIME WAS IN THIS VEHICLE, 28 DAYS AGO. THIS FAILURE IS KNOWN BY HYUNDAI, BUT STILL REQUIRES A TIME AND MONEY INVESTMENT TO FIX, I HAVE LOST HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF MY TIME TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN MITIGATED. DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THEY REPLACED BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH AGAIN. NOW THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT COMES ON AND MY BRAKE LIGHTS ARE NOT WORKING. WHEN I DID GET IT TO START THE CAR WOULD NOT GO INTO ANY GEAR; IT JUST WAS LOCKED IN PARK. WELL, YESTERDAY, JULY 20, 2011 THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED AGAIN BECAUSE OF ALL THE SAME PROBLEMS. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND DISCONCERTING WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING SOFTWARE WAS UPDATED, WHICH WAS THE REMEDY STATED IN THE RECALL NOTIFICATION.
