Good day, please note that most of my communication with Hyundai has been over the phone. I sent one an email shortly after the event, and after following up on the phone, I received this following string separately. I can forward you more along the way, but Hyundai is in possession of the call recordings. I was hoping they would cover my repairs, my engine had a lifetime warranty, but during this process I learned that there was a recall for this car that I was never aware of as the new owner. I needed a software update to get any repairs covered. Please reach out to me for more info!

The affected component is the engine/rod bearing (Theta II 2.4L). My 2011 Hyundai Sonata stalled and the engine locked up twice in live traffic (March 2025 and July 2025). The vehicle is available for inspection if needed. This created a serious safety risk to me and others on the road, as the stall occurred on [XXX] at highway speeds. This failure could have been catastrophic had it happened on the DC/Baltimore Beltway or another high-traffic roadway. Hyundai’s system shows Recall 132 was marked complete at very low mileage (around 32,000 miles), but my vehicle later developed oil consumption and stalling consistent with rod bearing failure. Capitol Heights Hyundai noted a warranty pre-authorization (PA) in March 2025 and told me Hyundai needed my mailing address “for the claim,” but later said it was a typo and that no record exists. The dealership charged me for a diagnostic but did not inspect the vehicle for rod bearing failure, despite symptoms consistent with Recall 132. Annapolis Hyundai, where the car was purchased as a CPO, has admitted they have no documentation that Recall 132 was ever performed (no repair order, mileage, or technician notes). Yet Hyundai’s system shows Recall 132 marked “complete.” Without proof that the KSDS software or bearing inspection was done, I belive this recall should be considered open. Hyundai Consumer Affairs has stated that I must pay for towing and diagnosis before they will investigate, with possible reimbursement later. This conflicts with federal law (49 U.S.C. § 30120), which requires recall diagnosis and repair at no cost to the consumer. Prior to the failures, my vehicle had a history of oil consumption and “no oil on dipstick” findings, which are known precursors to rod bearing failure. No warning lamps appeared before the stalls. I am requesting NHTSA’s assistance in requiring Hyundai to provide documentation or reopen Recall 132 and perform a no-cost inspection/repair to ensure this vehicle is safe to operate INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF

on [XXX] iwas driving coming back home from [XXX] by exit [XXX]. the engine turn off and didnt turn back on. i had to get a town to take me out of the highway and pay $141.00 becide that my engine seized. now i dont have a car and the car didn't gave me any notification that something it was going on with the engine. if i had any light on the car i wil take it to the mechanic, know i loss my source of income because hyundai problems with engine. and to get another engine it cost $5000. While driving on the highway, the motor all of a sudden lost all power and the brakes locked causing a collision. I've never had any problems until then. My car was in tip top shape with no issues until the engine / motor decided to defect. Hyundai she recall this engine issue before someone gets killed

10/31/23 Car lost power on freeway. Dash lit up and stalled, I took picture brought to dealership. Could not find any issues or codes. 11/12/23 Driving on Pacific Coast Highway car started making knocking/ticking noise. Pull off to a side street and car hesitated and check engine light came on. Had it towed to dealership. Still waiting on assessment. Was told will take 2-3 days due to backlog. Clearly a known Engine issue dating back to recall campaign 132 Engine/inspection/replace. (I brought into dealership on 2/9/16 to perform checks on the 132 campaign - shows completed).

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while his wife was driving 10-15 MPH, the vehicle jolted, and the transmission slipped into 1st and 2nd gear. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that his wife veered to the side of the road, shifted into neutral(N), and then shifted back into drive(D), and the vehicle responded as needed. The dealer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to tow the vehicle to their location because the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.

On June 17, 2023, while during this car suddenly it started losing speed, pressing accelerator did not help. I stopped the car and restarted, it drove for another 400 yards and stopped again. I checked with my obd2 and it gave a code of misfiring third cylinder. Car had a recent replacement of engine under warranty by Parks Hyundai of Gainesville as previous engine had started smoking in 2011. My recent calls to the dealership did not result in any return call from them. Car is standing at my house for the past two weeks. I am really SCARED to drive this car. Also fed up with the dealership which does not care even to return my calls.

I was driving my vehicle and a warning light indicating hybrid system charging failure warning. The vehicle had intermittent power problems and would not move appropriately in relation to the pushing the gas pedal. It would not go then would jerk forward. I was finally able to pull over to the side of the road safely. I turned my car off and when turned back on the error message failed. This happened on two other occasions. Later there was a whining noise when shifting into second gear. I took in for service and the hyundai dealership told me the transmission needed to be replaced. My safety and others were at risk due to loss of ability to drive the vehicle appropriately due to loss of power.

I was driving my 2011 Hyundai Sonota and it felt like a truck had slammed into the back of my vehicle but it didn’t, the car was knocking and finally stopped and wouldn’t accelerate when pushing the pedal. I had to have it towed and the shop didn’t know what to do and I had it sent to Rick Case Hyundai and I explained the situation about the debris being washed out of the engine and they asked for $1700 just to look at the engine. I had a few recalls and they should have looked at the engine with no problems and no charges. They had my vehicle towed and it took me a few months to figure out what happened to my car? I have been denied EVERYTHING BY HYUNDAI CORPORATE AND TAMMY OFFERED TO LOOK AT THE ENGINE AFTER SENDING THE INFORMATION TO BBB AND SHE SAID SHE WOULD DO IT FREE OF CHARGE BECAUSE THERE IS A RECALL ON THE END

My engine has failed, and my steering wheel column has locked. I had the software update on my engine with Napleton that qualified me for a lifetime engine replacement. I submitted maintenance records for my car and pictures of my valvetrain that are well maintained, and hyundai denied my engine claim for exceptional maintenance neglect on Dec8. On December 14th, after reviewing my oil changes, they still denied me for using low quality oil that's obscured. The problem I am having with my car is oil, not being able to get to the pistons inside my engine. It's not fair when the company know they engines have a manufacture defect. Then they blame the customers for lack of maintenance to have an excuse not to replace the engine. Knowing that with or without oil changes in the hyundai sonata 2011 -2012 models the engines will eventually seize anyway.I've reached out to their company over 300 times trying to resolve this matter and I'm still in the same place I started at a month ago. I want to sue for pain and suffering. I've been without a car since nov 9, and it's dec 20. Hyundai has put me and my family life in danger on numerous occasions, with their faulty and defected parts causing two near death experiences. Hyundai sonata has had a recall on every part, and I consider them unsafe and dangerous. I have seven different case reports with Hyundai motor company about excessive oil consumption, and the knocking whining vibrating and shaking. They are very much aware of everything

when driving randomly the cars engine will rev really high while pressing the gas pedal but the car doesn't move. After a little while the car eventually makes a loud clunking noise which shakes the car and typically causes the tires to spin. It seems to happen when the car is trying to decide whether to switch the gas engine or back to EV mode. This has been happening for a long time an even after the engine was replace under the recall. This is a safety issue that causes major concerns for myself an passengers. Also it happen when turning onto highways or exits which at high speeds there is a high likelihood of causing an accident. I have reported this to Hyundai several times but they cannot figure out the cause but rather keep trying different things an charging me. the car also seems to burn oil fast which doesn't make any sense being that its a newly installed engine.

During the failure, the gears failed to shift as needed, and the vehicle would not accelerate while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the shifter cable had detached. The contact's husband informed the contact that a pin was missing from the shifter cable. The contact's husband opened the hood and shifted the gear manually with someone seated in the driver’s seat. The contact's husband was able to drive the vehicle to their residence. The dealer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. My daughter and a passenger were driving our car at night October 3, 2021and the entire car suddenly and without notice began shaking and convulsing, became non responsive and all the electrical components and the engine went dead including inside lights, brakes, power steering and lighting system. It was nighttime and the traffic was medium but she was able to ease the vehicle onto the shoulder without incident but had a few close calls as drivers eased around her. They could have been severely injured by the traffic as it attempted to get past her on this narrow two lane road. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic who diagnosed that the engine had blown, was seized and locked up. He also mentioned that there is a recall for the 2011 Sonata and numerous problems such as this have been reported. We had no idea there was a recall on this vehicle. We are very concerned and upset that this incident could have caused severe injury to our daughter, her friend and other drivers around her. There were no prior notifications or signals with the car having any problems prior to this incident.

I HAVE BEEN HAVING INTERMITTENT TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS FOR A WHILE NOW. I?VE HAD THE CODES CHECKED SEVERAL TIMES AND BY SEVERAL PEOPLE, AND EACH ONE SAYS THAT ITS A CODE FOR A FAULTY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE SENSOR. IT CAUSES VERY HARD AND UNPREDICTABLE SHIFTING. WE?VE HAD TO STOP DRIVING IT ALL TOGETHER BECAUSE OF SAFETY CONCERNS DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE LAST TIME I DROVE IT I HAD MY 11 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER IN THE CAR WITH ME AND THE CAR WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO THE PROPER GEAR WHILE GOING THROUGH A BUSY INTERSECTION, AND WE WERE ALMOST T-BONED BY A LARGE SUV, THE IMPACT WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WHERE MY DAUGHTER WAS AND I HAVE REFUSED TO DRIVE OR ALLOW THE CAR TO BE DRIVEN SINCE. OUR CAR HAD A RECALL, THE RECALL WAS FIXED IN 2014, BUT IT HAS SINCE BROKEN. DURING THAT TIME WE HAVE PUT ONLY 30,000 MILES ON THE CAR. THE TRANSMISSION CABLE SNAPPED AND THEY ARE CHARGING US $1000 TO FIX SOMETHING THAT THEY SAID THEY FIXED. THIS IS A PART THAT SHOULDN'T BREAK FOR THE WHOLE LIFE OF THE CAR. OUR CAR HAD A RECALL, IT WAS REPAIRED BY HYUNDAI, AND THEY ARE REFUSING TO REPAIR THE 'REPAIRED' WORK. WE CALLED HYUNDAI CORPORATE OFFICES AND GOT THE RUN AROUND. I FEEL, IF THIS WAS A NATIONAL ISSUE, TO WHERE THEY HAD TO RECALL 850,000 CARS, THEY MUST HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS ISSUE. THE VEHICLE HAS RECEIVED 15 RECALLS IN THE TIME I'VE OWNED IT MOST OF WHICH ARE LIFE THREATENING SAFETY ISSUES , COMPLETE MOTOR LOCK UP , SUDDEN LOSS OF FUEL AND STALLING.(BRAKE STOPPER PAD MALFUNCTION 3 TIMES), SEAT BELT ANCHOR FAILURE, COMPLETE SAFETY AIR BAG FAILURE, EXHAUST SYSTEM FAILURE, HIGH PRESSURE FUEL LINE LEAKS, MY WIFE AND I LIVE ON VERY LIMITED SOCIAL SECURITY MONTHLY BENEFITS AND NOT IN A POSITION TO AFFORD A NEW CAR OR REPEATEDLY HAVE TO SPEND 100'S OF DOLLARS EVERY FEW MONTHS FOR REPAIRS DUE TO MANUFACTURE ERROR / DAMAGE IN CONSTRUCTION OF THE VEHICLE. THE FIRE DESTROYED MOST ALL OTHER COMPONENTS IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND HAD TO BE REPLACED, SOME AT OUR EXPENSE. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED AND WE HAD TO PAY $3500.00 TO REPAIR......FYI, WE LIVE ON 1700.00 PER MONTH SOCIAL SECURITY AND THIS CAUSED US A VERY EXTREME FINANCIAL DIFFICULTY FOR MONTHS THEREAFTER . THIS AN AN ELEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION AND SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE 10/100,000 TRANSMISSION WARRANTY. BEING THAT HYUNDAI RELEASES THIS SERVICE BULLETIN, THIS SENSORS POSSIBLE FAILURE IS A KNOW FACT AND HAS BEEN EXPERIENCED BY MANY OTHERS AS MY ONLINE RESEARCH PROVED. HYUNDAI SHOULD COVER THIS AND NOT HAVE THEIR DEALERS CHARGED OVER $700 TO CORRECT THIS KNOWN FAULT IN THE HYUNDAI VEHICLE.

I ASKED IF I CAN SPEAK TO SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN WHY THIS HAPPENED SO QUICKLY AND IF THERE'S ANYTHING TO WORRY ABOUT AND THEY COULDN'T CONNECT ME WITH ANYONE NEITHER DID THEY ASK FOR MY INFORMATION TO CONTACT ME WHEN THAT EXPERT IS AVAILABLE. NOW ABOUT A MONTH SINCE TAKING THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, I CHECK MY VIN ONLINE AND TO MY SURPRISE 4 OF THE MOST CRITICAL OPEN RECALLS ARE STILL NOT CLOSED OR REMEDIED. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT OF A RECALL FOR THE STEERING COUPLER, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS OVER THE MILEAGE AND COULD NOT BE REPAIRED PER THE MANUFACTURER RECALL. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V190000 (STEERING), BUT WAS UNSURE IF THE RECALL WAS SERVICED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND REFFERED THE CONTACT TO HYUNDAI AWARDS TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER INQUIRED OF AN ESTIMATE OF THE REPAIRS. WITHOUT AN ESTIMATE, THE CONTACT QUOATED $500. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO JOHNSON HYUNDAI OF CARY (5000 OLD RALEIGH RD, CARY, NC 27511(919) 439-2059) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A STEERING COUPLER AND AXLE FAILURE. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE AXLE DAMAGE OCCURRED AT THE TIME OF THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AGAIN WITH A MORE ACCURATE REPAIR COST OF $800, AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WOULD ONLY PAY $500 TOWARDS THE REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,043.

WITHIN A FEW DAYS OF DRIVING WITH THE NEW ENGINE I HEARD A DISTINCT WHINING AT ABOUT 2500 RPM AND NOTICED A STEADY LEAK DUE TO SPOTS ON MY DRIVEWAY. I RETURNED THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO SAID THAT THE LEAK WAS FROM THE TRANSMISSION AND THAT THEY HAVE NO LIABILITY SINCE THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT DID NOT CAUSE THEM TO HAVE TO ACTUALLY TOUCH THE TRANSMISSION SINCE THE TWO SYSTEMS ARE COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT OF ONE ANOTHER. CORPORATE HYUNDAI SAYS THAT THE POWERTRAIN (I.E. TRANSMISSION) IS NOT COVERED UNDER THEIR EXTENDED 120,000 MILE WARRANTY AND THE COST OF THE REPAIR IS GOING TO BE AN OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE TO ME.

I DROVE THE CAR FOR THE FIRST TIME ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY FOR ABOUT 85 MILES SINCE IT WAS LAST IN THE SHOP, FOR WHAT WAS SAID THAT EVERYTHING WAS SAFE TO DRIVE, AND I NOTICED TODAY THAT MY CAR STARTED TO RATTLE AT A 65 MILES AN HOUR ON I95 NORTH IN MARYLAND- WENT I HAD TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY BECAUSE MY CAR HAD CAUGHT ON FIRE UNDERNEATH THE HOOD AND ENGINE OF CAR AND THE SCAR STALLED. CAR MAKES A LOUD CLICKING NOISE IN THE STEERING COLUMN WHEN GOING OVER 60 MPH AND WHEN SLOWING DOWN. WHEN PARKED, THERE IS ALSO CLICKING NOISES WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. AT AROUND 107,000 MILES THE MOTOR ON MY 20111 SONATA SHUT OFF ON THE 91 EAST FREEWAY WHILE TRAVELING ABOUT 70MPH. I WAS FORCED TO PULL OFF ON THE HARD SHOULDER OF THE ROAD AND THE VEHICLE HAD NO POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES. THE MOTOR STARTED BACK UP EVENTUALLY BUT WAS MAKING A LOUD NOISE AND FAILED COMPLETELY SHORTLY AFTER. WHEN STARTING AND MOVING INTO A DRIVE GEAR FROM PARK, OR WHILE AT A STOP IN DRIVE, THE VEHICLE WILL SUDDENLY LOSE ITS DRIVE LETTER DISPLAY AND WILL FEEL LIKE THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT ENGAGED. THIS IS STILL OCCURRING AFTER THE DEALERSHIP INSPECTED THE VEHICLE FOR THIS ISSUE. THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED REPEATEDLY. AFTER THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF THEN ON, THE DRIVE LETTER DISPLAY REAPPEARS WITH THE DRIVE LETTER THAT I MOVED THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER TO. WHEN THE TRANSMISSION IS MOVED TO REVERSE, THE DRIVE LETTER DISAPPEARS AGAIN. SOMETIMES THIS HAPPENS 3 OR 4 TIMES IMMEDIATELY IN A ROW. IT HAS ALSO HAPPENED WHILE IN DRIVE AT A STOP AND HAS REQUIRED THAT I TURN OFF THE ENGINE THEN TURN IT ON AGAIN TO SEE THE DRIVE LETTERS.

AFTER THE DISPLAY GOES BLANK, THE CAR FEELS AS THOUGH IT IS GOING TO STALL AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARS. I INFORMED THEM THERE WAS ALSO A RECALL FOR THE STARTER AND THEY ARGUE ME DOWN THAT IT WAS NOT. WELL SEVERAL PEOPLE I KNOW WITH THE SAME TYPE OF CAR YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL AND THEY RECEIVED AN NOTICE BUT WHEN THEY TOOK IT IN THE RECALL WAS FOUND. I HAD TO GET MY CAR TOWED AND PAY FOR THE REPAIRS IN THE AMOUNT OF $575.00 AT FOR THEY WERE TRYING TO CHARGE ME OVER $700.00. I SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO PAY FOR A RECALL AND NOW TRYING TO FIND HOW TO FILE A CLAIM FOR A REFUND. MY CAR STOP ON THE STREET IN FRONT OF MY PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT I GOT A JUMP IT MADE IT HOME AND DIED AGAIN ON THE STREET CALL AAA AND HAD IT TOWED TO DEALER.

MY STEERING WHEEL HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY LOOSE AND SHAKY OVER THE PAST MONTHS WHEN DRIVING OR STATIONARY. THERE IS A VERY DISTINCT (AND GETTING WORSE OVER TIME) "CLICKING" OR "KNOCKING" SOUND WHEN I BACK UP AND TURN MY WHEEL EITHER WAY. I WAS TOLD BY MY MECHANIC THAT SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH MY STEERING GEAR BOX/SHAFT SECTOR AND POSSIBLY SOME OF MY AXLES. HE TOLD ME THIS WAS DANGEROUS, AND THAT THE RECALL CAMPAIGN NUMBER 097 SHOULD COVER ME. HOWEVER, I WAS TOLD BY HYUNDAI THAT MY SPECIFIC CAR DOES NOT FALL UNDER THIS RECALL, EVEN THOUGH I MY CAR HAS THE EXACT SYMPTOMS OF THE RECALL. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT BECAUSE OF RECENT RECALLS, MY WARRANTY WOULD BE EXTENDED. HOWEVER, HYUNDAI HAS NOW TOLD ME THAT MY WARRANTY EXTENSION ONLY COVERS THE SOLE ENGINE, AND NOT THE AXLES THOUGH THEY ARE PART OF AND COVERED BY THE INITIAL ENGINE WARRANTY. HYUNDAI HAS TOLD ME THERE ARE "KITS" TO FIX THESE PROBLEMS, BUT I HAVE TO PAY OVER $1000 FOR THE KITS TO FIX, EVEN THOUGH THESE WERE FAULTY PARTS BY HYUNDAI. THE HYUNDAI SERVICE MANAGER I SPOKE WITH TOLD ME FLAT OUT THAT MY CAR HAD FAULTY PARTS, BUT THAT THE KITS COULD FIX THEM. I ASKED HIM WHOSE FAULT IT WAS THAT THEY WERE FAULTY, AND HE SAID THAT ALL CAR COMPANIES DEAL WITH THIS AND IT WASN'T BECAUSE OF MY DRIVING. BUT EVEN STILL SO, I HAVE TO BE THE ONE TO PAY FOR HYUNDAI'S FAULTY PARTS AND NON-EXISTENT RECALL HELP. I'M BEYOND FRUSTRATED AFTER READING SO MANY REVIEWS AND FORUMS ONLINE OF PEOPLE WITH THE EXACT SAME CAR SYMPTOMS AS MINE WHO ARE UNFORTUNATELY ALSO NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. IF I CANNOT GET A BETTER RESPONSE AND ANSWER FROM THIS, I WILL BE CONTACTING THE MAIN LAWYER WHO OTHERS HAVE ALSO CONTACTED ABOUT THIS AND FILING AN OFFICIAL LAWSUIT. THEY ALSO SAID IT WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL FOR STEERING COLUMN INTERMEDIATE SHAFT WHICH I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR WHEN THAT RECALL CAME OUT.I DONT KNOW WHAT THEY DO OR IF THEY DO ANYTHING WHEN THEY SUPPOSEDLY LOOK AT YOUR CAR DUE TO A RECALL. MY CAR WAS DOING GREAT WHEN I TOOK IT IN FOR THE RECALLS UNTIL THE LAST TIME. ALSO WHEN I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR ENGINE RECALL MY OIL DIPSTICK WAS YELLOW. BUT NOW I HAVE AN ORANGE OIL DIPSTICK. BACK TO THE PART ABOUT THE STEERING NOISE IT MAKES NOISE SITTING STILL AND MOVING AND SOMETIMES IT GETS LOUDER IF THE ROAD IS NOT AS SMOOTH.ALSO HOW DO THEY KNOW IT IS THE COUPLING AND NOT SOMETHING ELSE SUCH AS WHAT THE RECALL WAS FOR WHEN THEY JUST LISTENED TO MY CAR AND NOT INSPECT IT TO BE SURE. ON A COUPLE OF SEPARATE INCIDENTS, THE GEAR DISAPPEAR. I WAS DRIVING ON D, THE GEAR WAS ON D, BUT AFTER SEVERAL MILES THE GEAR DISAPPEAR. I PULLED OVER TO PARK THE CAR, I PUT THE CAR ON REVERSE, BUT THE GEAR WAS NOT VISIBLE. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND TURNED IT BACK ON, I COULD SEE THE GEAR THEN. THIS HAS HAPPENED A COUPLE OF TIMES. A COUPLE OF WEEKS AFTER THIS HAPPENED, THE CAR DID NOT START AT ALL. THE CAR ENDED UP STARTING AFTER IT WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. I WAS KNOCKED OFF MY FEET AND DRAGGED DOWN MY DRIVEWAY UNTIL MY CAR HIT MY NEIGHBOR'S TREE (APPROX.. 70? FROM WHERE THE CAR STARTED INSIDE THE GARAGE), WHERE IT STOPPED. THE EVENT CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF MY NEIGHBOR WHO RAN OVER TO MY HOUSE TO ALERT MY HUSBAND. HE RAN OUT TO THE CAR, WHICH WAS RESTED AGAINST THE TREE. HE ATTEMPTED TO PUT THE CAR IN ?PARK?, HOWEVER THE GEAR SELECTOR WAS IN ITS ABSOLUTE FORWARD POSITION. HE THEN PULLED THE GEAR SELECTOR BACK INTO THE DRIVE POSITION (GEAR INDICATORS STILL NON-FUNCTIONAL) AND THE CAR MADE AN AUDIBLE ?SNAP? AND LURCHED FORWARD. MY HUSBAND DROVE THE CAR APPROX. 20? WHERE HE PARKED IT. MY HUSBAND, MADE A PHONE CALL TO THE GURNEE, IL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP, THEY ADVISED HIM TO CALL THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CARE NUMBER (1-800-633-5151). HE WAS CONNECTED WITH A CASE MANAGER BY THE NAME OF MERRIETA. SHE TOOK NOTES OF THE INCIDENT AND ADVISED HIM TO HAVE THE CAR SENT TO THE NEAREST HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP FOR AN INVESTIGATION. ON 5 OCCASIONS MY CAR HAS TEMPORARILY STALLED/LOST POWER FOR AN INSTANT, ALWAYS AT FREEWAY SPEED WITHIN 10 MILES OF MY HOME. THE SENSATION IS AS IF THE CAR HAD RUN INTO SOMETHING HEAVY ON THE PAVEMENT. IT VIOLENTLY PITCHED MY WIFE AND I FORWARD AND I EXPECT THAT WE WOULD HAVE HIT THE DASH HAD WE NOT BEEN WEARING SEATBELTS. AFTER EXITING THE FREEWAY IN ALL CASES, THE CAR HAD BARELY ENOUGH ACCELERATION TO DRIVE MORE THAN 25 MPH FOR THE COUPLE OF MILES TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER CLAIMS THAT THEY CANNOT REPAIR A PROBLEM WHICH THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE. I UNDERSTAND THIS BUT FIND IT DIFFICULT TO BELIEVE THAT HYUNDAI HAS NEVER HEARD OF THIS ISSUE BEFORE. WHILE ENTERING A PARKING SPOT TO A DINER, THE CAR UNINTENDED ACCELERATED CRASHING INTO THE SIDE OF THE DINER. MINOR DAMAGE TO THE SIDE OF THE DINER AS I WAS NO MORE THAN 3 FEET FROM THE BLDG. AFTER I RESTARTED THE CAR, IT COULD RUN SMOOTHLY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH. GIVEN THE OCCURRENCE FREQUENCY, THE CHANCE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM AT DEALERSHIP IS ALMOST ZERO. I HAVE HAD THIS CAR TWO YEARS AND ABOUT TWO MONTHS AND HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS (PURCHASED BRAND NEW) -- I'VE HAD TO GET A NEW MOTOR (ENGINE CAUGHT ON FIRE (ELECTRICAL/SMOKING) WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE BELTWAY), REPLACED TIRE ROD, NEED 4 BRAND NEW TIRES, TRANSMISSION SLIPPING, AND OTHER ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH COOLING/HEATING SYSTEM (THE BLOWER DOES NOT WORK FOR AIR POINTED IN THE FLOOR DIRECTION), STRONG SMELL OF GAS FUMES INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE GAS MILEAGE GAUGE IS INACCURATE -- I GET NO WHERE NEAR THE HIGHWAY NOR CITY MILES. THE GAS METER IS NOT REGISTERING. PARTS ON THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM HAVE BEEN RANDOMLY REPLACED. I HAVE HAD ALL SCHEDULE SERVICES ON MY VEHICLE AS WELL AS EXTRAS SUCH AS SPECIAL REPLACEMENT FILTERS, ETC. I HAVE ALSO HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE BREAKING SYSTEM. I BELIEVE I'VE PURCHASED A COMPLETE LEMON. THE CURRENT MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE IS 27700 MILES. THERE IS NO WAY I SHOULD BE HAVING THIS MANY PROBLEMS AS FREQUENTLY AS I HAVE BEEN HAVING. PICKED UP MY CAR AGAIN AND THE SKID TRACTION WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I TOOK IT IN AGAIN THIS TIME THE TCS LIGHT WAS ON AND THE SHIFTER WAS NOT RELEASING.THEY TESTED THE BRAKE SWITCH CIRCUIT AND FOUND NO POWER TO THE BRAKE SWITCH. THEY REPLACED THE FUSE BOX AND HARNESS CABLE. I HAVE CALLED THREE DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS SERVICE DEPARTMENTS AND THEY ALL SAY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH CAUSING THE TCS WARNING LIGHT TO COME ON. IF IT IS EFFECTING OTHER CARS THERE MOST BE A NATIONAL PROBLEM AND SHOULD BE A RECALL BEFORE THERE IS A FATALITY. THEN, AS I PRESS ON THE GAS PEDAL FROM 0-20 MPH, THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO LURCH INTO THE NEXT GEAR. IT LURCHES AGAIN WHEN I SPEED UP TO 30-40 MPH. AS I TRAVEL ON THE INTERSTATE BETWEEN 40-80 MPH, I CAN FEEL THE CAR LURCH INTO A LOWER AND HIGHER GEARS AS I LET MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND ACCELERATE. IT IS USUALLY TEMPORARILY FIXED BY TURNING THE ENGINE OFF AND THEN BACK ON AGAIN. WHEN I SAY "LURCH", IT FEELS LIKE THE CAR DECREASES SPEED FOR A SPLIT SECOND AND THEN RESUMES PROPER SPEED QUICKLY. MY BRAND NEW 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA 2.4L GLS ENGINE BLEW UP AT 18,000 MILES ON I-10, 670 MILES FROM OUR HOME. WE HAD THE CAR FULLY SERVICED PRIOR TO OUR TRIP, 10 DAYS TO BE EXACT. THIS WAS THE SECOND LONG DISTANT ROAD TRIP, WITH THIS NEW CAR. WE ALMOST LOST OUR LIFE. WHAT SAVED US WAS AN EXIT WE WERE APPROACHING AT THE TIME, AND EXPERIENCE DRIVING. IT SOUNDED LIKE PARTS WAS FLYING IN EVERY DIRECTION. THIS STORY WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN OUT IF WE WERE DEAD. BUT, WE ARE ALIVE AND WELL AND READY TO TELL THE WORLD OUR STORY. HE CALLED TO ORDER A NEW ENGINE. THE ENGINE FOR 2011 SONATA 2.4L GLS WAS SECOND OR THIRD IN LINE ON THE BACK ORDER LIST. I WAS SO VERY WRONG ABOUT HYUNDAI MOTORS INC. AFTER THE DEALERSHIP GOT US BACK ON THE ROAD WE WERE FORGOTTEN. THE FIRST TIME I THOUGHT SOMETHING STRANGE WAS GOING ON WITH MY NEW CAR (PURCHASED WITH 16,000 MILES ON IT) AT THE 18,000 MILE MARK. . I PULLED OVER ASAP AND TURNED THE CAR OFF (REBOOTED THE CAR) AND EVERYTHING WORKED AGAIN. ON THE DEC 17TH,2011, (3 WEEKS LATER) I WAS PULLING OUT OF A FRIENDS HOUSE AT 10PM AND EVERYTHING SEEM NORMAL. HOWEVER, AS THE CAR GOT TO ABOUT 15MPH THE TACH RACED OVER TO 5,000 RPMS AND THEN I HEARD A LOUD SLAM AND THE CAR SHOT FORWARD. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER THIS MORNING AND ASKED FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION. THE SERVICE TECH GOT ME A LOANER IN LESS THAN 30MINS I WAS ON MY WAY. SAME CAR AND COLOR. I GOT A CALL FROM THE DEALER A COUPLE OF HOURS LATER SAYING THEY WERE GOING TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION. WHILE AND I NOT HAPPY THAT MY NEW CAR REQUIRED A NEW TRANSMISSION AFTER ONLY 3500 MILES OF ME DRIVING IT AND UNDER 20,000 TOTAL MILES, I AM VERY HAPPY HOW THE DEALER HANDLED THE ENTIRE ISSUE. WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY I EXPERIENCED A LARGE JOLT WHICH RESULTED IN AN UNEXPECTED SHIFT IN THE TRANSMISSION GEAR WHERE MY SPEED OF APPROX. 65 MPH AT 2000 RPM DROPPED TO 45 MPH AT APPROX 3800 RPM. I PULLED OFF THE FREEWAY AND SHIFTED FROM D TO R TO N TO P, HOWEVER IT SEEMED THAT IT WAS LOCKED IN 2ND GEAR. I MANAGED TO DRIVE IT IN THAT GEAR TO THE LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER. HOWEVER ONCE THE ENGINE WAS SHUTOFF AND RESTARTED, THE TRANSMISSION WAS BACK IN ITS NORMAL GEAR AND THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE THAT EVENT. I HAVE OWNED MY 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA FOR ONE YEAR. ON JULY 15, 2011, I WENT TO START THE CAR AND I COULD NOT DEPRESS THE BRAKE OR START THE CAR. THE ACC STUFF WOULD COME ON BUT NO IGNITION TO THE MOTOR. I TRIED AND TRIED TO START IT AND ENDED UP CALLING THE DEALERSHIP. I WAS TOLD TO "KICK" THE BRAKE PEDAL "HARD" SEVERAL TIMES; WHICH I DID. I FINALLY GOT IT STARTED AND DROVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. I WAS TOLD "BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH" REPLACED. I HAVE A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. I PURCHASED THE CAR IN AUGUST OF 2010. ABOUT A MONTH AFTER OWNING THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY RECORDED THE CODE AND THEN SAID IT WAS THE AC. I WAS ASKED TO WAIT 15 SECONDS BEFORE TURNING THE AC ON AFTER STARTING CAR. SO I DID THAT. ABOUT A WEEK OR SO LATER, THE LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN. TAKE IT BACK TWICE AFTER THIS, THEY RECORD THE CODE AND THEN THE SWITCH IS REPLACED. I MAINTAIN MY CAR WITH ALL MAINTENANCE REQUESTED AND I DRIVE IT ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAD THE TIRE LIGHT COME ON A FEW MONTHS LATER - WAS TOLD IT WAS THE TEMPERATURE. THAT EVENTUALLY WENT OFF. NEXT WAS THE ENGINE LIGHT YET AGAIN. THIS TIME IT OCCURRED AFTER I TOOK THE CAR IN ON JUNE 17TH FOR AN OIL CHANGE. THEY TOLD ME A RECALL WAS ON THE TRANSMISSION AND THEY DID THE RECALL UPDATE. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THIS UPDATE, THE CAR DROVE TERRIBLY. VERY LOUD, VERY ROUGH. ABOUT A WEEK AFTER THIS UPDATE, THE CAR BREAKS DOWN IN THE PARKING LOT. IT HAS DONE THIS NOW ABOUT 5 OR 6 TIMES SINCE JUNE (TODAY IS JULY 20TH). I TAKE IT TO THE DEALER AND TOLD I NEED THE ENGINE LIGHT ON IN ORDER TO REPAIR. THE LIGHT NEEDS TO COME ON TWO OR THREE TIMES BEFORE HYUNDAI WILL REPLACE. THE ENGINE LIGHT SOMETIMES COMES ON, SOMETIMES DOES NOT, BUT IT IS GUARANTEED TO BREAK DOWN. IT IS MOST DEFINITELY THE TRANSMISSION AS IT WILL STALL AND THEN HESITATE. THE LIGHTS ON THE GEAR SHAFT GO AWAY COMPLETELY AND THE DASH LIGHTS GO AWAY SO YOU HAVE NO IDEA IF YOU ARE IN PARK, REVERSE, ETC. LAST TIME MY ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, IT WENT BACK OFF THAT NIGHT. THE PROBLEM CONTINUES AND HYUNDAI CAN'T SEEM TO FIX. I READ ONLINE FROM A GENERAL SEARCH ON THIS CAR THAT THIS IS A RESOUNDING ISSUE ACROSS THE BOARD WITH OTHERS AS WELL. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE AND SUGGESTED THAT I UNLOCK THE "SHIFT LOCK" IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES! WHILE DRIVING MY NEW 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS SEDAN WITH 200 MILES ON THE ODOMETER, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED COMPLETELY WHEN A TRANSMISSION HOSE BLEW OFF RELEASING ALL THE OIL OUT OF THE TRANSMISSION. ONCE AT THE DEALERSHIP THEY SHOWED ME THAT HOSE CLAMP FOR THE HOSE HAD NEVER BEEN ATTACHED CORRECTLY AT THE FACTORY! THE CAR IS AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. IT IS NOT KNOW AT THIS TIME IF THE TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN DAMAGED DUE TO THE LOSS OF OIL. WE WERE NOT HURT AND DIDN'T LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR. THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED ON A FLAT PIECE OF HIGHWAY, SHOULD IT OCCURRED IN HILLY TERRAIN OR PASSING ANOTHER VEHICLE THE RESULTS COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH DIFFERENT SINCE THE CAR BECAME INOPERABLE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE GEAR SELECTOR WAS PLACED INTO THE PARK POSITION; HOWEVER, THE WARNING LIGHT DISPLAYED THAT THE GEAR WAS NOT WHICH MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE AUTOMATIC DOORS TO LOCK. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE "PARK" WARNING INDICATOR WOULD CORRECT ITSELF AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION OR WHEN THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE GEAR SHIFT. THE PART WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 500. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
