Based on what I experienced, the fire appears to have resulted from an internal mechanical or electrical failure that occurred without warning while the vehicle was in motion. No prior issues or dashboard alerts were present at the time, and there was no external impact or damage that could explain the fire.

I started the car, put it into gear and then the breaks wouldn’t work. The car dash said something like check breaks hybrid system failure do not drive. There is not recall on my car but the Hyundai service department doesn’t know how to fix it. This is the second time it’s happened. I’m scared to drive it. Please investigate!

On [XXX] while driving approximately 1.5 hours away from home, a warning message appeared on my dashboard stating: “Hybrid System Warning. Stop and Do Not Drive.” I immediately pulled over and contacted my insurance company, who arranged for the vehicle to be towed to the nearest authorized Hyundai dealership (Thomas Hyundai in Cumberland). The warning clearly indicated that it was not safe to continue driving. Later, I found out that the issue reported (recall 198) have presented cases ending with fire of the engine. It is critical to mention that in January 2025, I attended the official manufacturer recall for this vehicle, which was supposed to ensure safety and reliability. Despite this, the vehicle failed and left me stranded in an unsafe area. Since then, I have been without my vehicle for over three weeks. I contacted Hyundai customer care and opened a case. I was repeatedly told a case manager would call me within three business days, but I never received any follow-up until I insisted. I was eventually assigned a case manager named Snowy, and also remained in contact with the dealership. On several occasions, both Snowy and the dealership assured me that the vehicle would be ready by Thursday, July 10 and that It was not until then that I could start to request a reimbursement for my rental expenses. I repeatedly asked for confirmation because I am renting a car at my own expense in order to go to work and manage my life. However, on Thursday, July 10, I called again and was told the vehicle would instead be ready by Tuesday, July 15. Then, on Friday, July 11, I received an email stating that the engine had just arrived, and that the dealership was only now able to begin repairs. After that, and only once the car is finished, Hyundai will “review” the case and determine whether I qualify for reimbursement. This is unacceptable. I drive a 2012 Hyundai Sonata Limited. After a recent fill-up, I began experiencing delayed acceleration, engine hesitation, and what appears to be misfiring—especially at low throttle. Most notably, the brake lights stay illuminated even when the car is turned off, which drains the battery and poses a major safety hazard. I scanned the vehicle with an OBD-II scanner and received code P0504, which points to a brake light switch malfunction. I also noticed that pressing the start button with my foot off the brake still starts the engine instead of going into accessory mode—confirming abnormal brake signal behavior. I replaced the brake light switch, which temporarily fixed the issue, but the symptoms returned within a day. After researching, I found there was a recall (NHTSA 15V759000) for a nearly identical issue involving the brake light switch and stopper pad. However, my VIN is not listed, even though I am experiencing the same safety-critical symptoms. This issue poses a significant safety risk on the road, and I believe my vehicle should be included in the affected population of the recall or issued a Technical Service Bulletin extension.

Butts County Fire and Emergency Services made a report about the car catching on fire. There was an electrical problem and/or the engine caught on fire. My son’s fingers got burned and he was taking to the emergency room. Further neurological damage done to all of his finger tips. No warning car just blew up in fire. My son’s fingers could have died during the car fire.

On [XXX] at approximately [XXX], my [XXX] Daughter was using my car to go to work. When she called us and informed my husband that the car did not start. At that point he asked to video call him so that he can visually see what was going on. She was directed to turn on the car again at and that point, the car started then smoke was noticed from coming out of the hood. My daughter managed to open the hood where flames emerged from the center of the engine. She then ran in the house to get a fire extinguisher and managed to put it out and it reignited. She then made a second attempt with another fire extinguisher where it briefly subsided and then grew larger. At that point the fire dept arrived and successfully extinguished the fire and deemed the car totaled after the Fire Marshall carefully inspected the car. When driving. Slow down to turn or to use round about car goes into EV. When i go to accelerate the gas motor will not re engage and the hybrid alarm system will go off. I lose all power to go any where. I have to pull over shut my car off give it a min then restart so the motor will come back on so i can drive again. I have to do this mulitple time in a 20 mile drive.

I’ve been having issues with my Gas Gauge not recognizing how much gas I have in my car. I can fill my tank up, and the gas light constantly stays on. I’ve been looking online and came across other Hyundai owners having the same problem. I also have been having what seems to be an electrical issue where my passenger door, does not open and it’s intermittent which also seems to be connected to why my car ceiling light won’t turn on all the time. Lastly, I have to constantly change the head light bulbs and the break light bulb. I’ve owned my car for 3 1/2 years now, and I shouldn’t have to keep having to put money into it when it seems to be a known issue.

The contact owned a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that various functions on the steering wheel including the horn, cruise control, and other electrical functions; all failed to operate as needed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that a warranty had been placed on the vehicle for the clock spring which they linked to the failure. The steering wheel also began to stick soon after the diagnosis. The dealer was notified of the failure; however, the dealer could not provide an appointment until months out. The contact then stated that while driving at 65 MPH, the vehicle began to hesitate upon the depression of the accelerator pedal. The contact began to pull over as the EPS(Electrical Power Steering) and several other warning lights appeared on the instrument panel. As the contact opened the door, a fellow motorist had also pulled over to alert the contact that the vehicle was on fire. Soon after exiting the vehicle, the entire vehicle quickly became engulfed in flames. The fire department quickly arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire. The contact was not injured, no other occupants were inside the vehicle, and the contact was unsure if a fire or police report was filed. Some of the grass and trees in the area had caught fire as a result of the failure. The remains of the vehicle was towed to an independent tow yard. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle was completely destroyed. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.

My brake lights are constantly needing replaced. Sometimes they stay on even when I'm not braking, other times they won't come on at all when I brake. I've gotten them replaced many times but it doesn't seem to fix the problem. I've almost gotten rear ended 3 times now bc my lights have failed to come on when hitting the brakes.

The rear tail lights repeatedly "burn out" and have to be replaced. This endangers me and other drivers when the tail lights are not working. The police have told me to fix it. I took it to the dealer who said it will cost $900 to replace wiring. Hyundai has issued an extended warranty (no recall) for this problem but will only fix it if the wires have melted. I believe this is manufacturer defect that they should repair.

On July 29, 2024, my 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid was parked in our driveway. About 10 minutes later an engine fire started that consumed the car. The local Fire Departmemt put out the fire but the car was totaled. The fire also destroyed a storage shed and some windows were damaged. The car was taken to the Hyundai Dealer for servicing when the engine light came on on March of 2024. The car was left for a few days with the dealer. The NHTSA Recall Number 23V651000 was not repaired during that service call.

Air bag light will not go off and has not been inspected by dealership. I was out here checking for any recall. I am in Texas and can not get inspection/registration with this light on. Also I have front light out on driver side front and back, I have had to change bulbs several times have even replaced brake light assembly back in 2022 and light is burned out again as of right not 4/2024 dealership says that extended warranty will not be covered for burnt out brake lights because of aftermarket part. I have also a case with BBB auto and at this date 4/10/2024 no response.

•brake failure •this has happened at indiscriminate times including the highway, suddenly the car tells me to stop driving and the brakes don’t work as they should, no telling this would happen until it occurs. When pressing brakes, a loud noise rumbles through the car and I am no longer able to drive at any speed higher than 5 mph (an issue for being on the road) risk of possible collision as this happens suddenly and gives short time to take action •UKNOWN •was inspected by local dealer, they said it was the primary pressure sensor which is a part of the Hydraulic brake booster pump. They wanted to replace the entire hydraulic unit even though it was only the sensor that was faulty and it would cost me $3,503.61 which is an ABSURD price for an electrical issue that I did not see coming at all and it is a robbery of regular people who need their cars to get to the places they need to be (work and family) this is NOT a luxury, I need my car •no warning signs or lights until the issue actually occurred. The only light that showed was the ABS lights, maybe it’s linked to the recall about the brake fluid leaking causing fires?

The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact became aware that the passenger's side headlight was inoperable. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the headlight bulb socket had failed, and the mechanic determined that the passenger's side headlight assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for a goodwill repair. The dealer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

The headlights and rear break lights keep going out, we have changed the bulbs multiple times and they keep burning out and not within months it happens within weeks the bulbs completely burn out which has caused us to be stopped by police and given warnings. The headlights look very dim when on which as well have been changed but still give a dim look. The engine has given out, the last time driving the vehicle was a 60 mile road which it lost velocity momentum and the engine light turned on then it completely shut off almost crashing into a light post.

The ABS (Antilock Brake System) or BMS ( Brake Module System) warning light illumination came on flashing “DO NOT DRIVE “ and the brakes sieze-up making it impossible to drive. Key Hyundai in Jacksonville previously charged me $2600 to replace the BMS and within warranty. A few months later the same company charged me another $342.56 to diagnose the same issue. I had to rent a car for $700 while in the service repair department. Key Hyundai was unable to fix my 2012 Sonata hybrid except offering me a replacement hybrid battery and control system for $12,900. I declined. I believe that the campaign 251 involves this problem. I had to get the car towed to another mechanic that is currently working on the vehicle.

I went to start my car up 10 days ago and it began to alarm with a message to check the brake system. My car was stuck and wouldn't drive. This also happened in July 2022 while I was on the highway. I could no longer accelerate and the gas pedal no longer gave power. I had to put on my hazard lights and coast to the far right lane. I took it to the Hyundai dealership near by and they said it wasn't safe to drive. I left it there and was told that Hyundai would replace the part in good faith at no charge but charged me $700 for labor. This is becoming a problem. I was told the car could catch fire while driving or while parked and that I could continue to drive it. I decided not to drive it because I do not feel safe.

The dealer was notified of the issue, and the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the fuel hose had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact was informed by the dealer, that the fuel hose was replaced, and the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V934000 (Engine) however, the contact was then informed by the dealer that the vehicle failed to start and diagnosed that the vehicle experienced unknown electrical failures. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

I have a 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid that has a problem with its ABS Module. It is overheating and causes my car to stop its brake and motor functions while driving. I contacted the dealership to get a rental or replacement in the meantime and they told me there is nothing they can do and to drive with caution. I called the manufacturer to get a rental for the meantime and they told me the same thing. I have looked on the recall documents and it says they should give me a vehicle in the meantime if it is unsafe to drive. Please, I don't even want the car at this point because of all the problems with it and with my dissatisfaction with customer service from any Hyundai business. But if I could just get a car that is safe to drive while I wait for the recall to have a remedy , I would take that.

While driving on the freeway, the Hybrid system warning, safely stop and do not drive will alternately flash with check brake and continuously the alarm sound with the park brake red light. The car would loose acceleration, and the brake pedal goes to the floor when applied. Once stopped, I restarted the car and the same things happen. The car can accelerate on and off for about 5mph. Brake pedal still goes to the floor. After restarting the car for 30-minutes- 1 hour, there are no warning lights or alarm. The car can be driven again. I brought to independent mechanic and found the code C1604 and there’s a recall 251 on ABS brake system- recommended to bring to dealer. Brought to dealer, they say that recall 251 had no fix yet. They diagnosed that the safety plug relay needs to be replaced. Dealer replaced it and said that the car is fixed. Pick up the car from the dealer. After 20 miles of driving the same problem occurred- Hybrid system warning, safely stop and do not drive will alternately flash with check brake and continuously the alarm sound with the park brake red light. Had the car towed back to the dealer. After 2 days, the dealer says it’s possibly a transmission issue. I asked how come it wasn’t diagnosed the first time around? No clear response.issue occurred 4 times already.

Car completely shut down suddenly and spontaneously without ANY warning while my husband and I were driving on a very busy major highway at night. We were unable to do ANYTHING to control the car and could have died, been seriously injured, or caused death or injury to other drivers. We were then towed off of the highway after calling for help. We don’t know firsthand exactly what failed. We were aware of our engine burning oil and had been to Huffines Hyundai multiple times previously for an oil consumption test at their recommendation. Upon completion of this test process no solutions for repair were offered, and we were never warned of any danger in driving it. We have found out via our own research that our car has a defective engine. This specific engine has been the subject of at least one class action lawsuit and Hyundai is well aware of its dangers. We have been denied an engine replacement by Hyundai as they are claiming negligence on our part as the reason for failure after we presented a substantial stack of oil change receipts. Not 100% complete, so they make this claim. These cars are death traps and people are dying because this company won’t honor their warranty. Please do something.

While driving, the engine abruptly seized up and stopped without any warning. This was a replacement engine from a previous recall. The transmission warning light had illuminated the previous day, after which the car began to hesitate when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear but otherwise drove normally. When the engine seized up, every warning light illuminated on the dashboard. The car still had full battery power but the engine would not turn over or make any response when the key was turned. After placing the car in neutral and pushing it several blocks, the engine began to smoke. The smoke progressively and quickly worsened until fire was visible under the hood in the engine compartment. The engine compartment was then engulfed in fire which spread to the front of the passenger compartment. The car had to be extinguished by the local volunteer fire department.

This is a 2012 sonata hybrid. The vehicle popped under the hood when my wife was driving to visit her father. My son opened the hood and fire started shooting out from next to the exhaust manifold. The car was just into Gurnee Hyundai for service. They had the car for a month and a half. I still don't think that they did anything when they had it. Anyway, the car burnt completely to the ground in the front engine area. I already contacted Hyundai America, and, even Hyundai and South Korea. This happened on September 8th. I have pictures, I also have the warranty individual who inspected the car before the dealer worked on it, or I have the warranty information. They have the documentation.

I have a 2012 Hyundai Sonta. The brake lights are not working properly. I have been changing the tail light for some time now but it doesn't seem to be working. At first all lights came on and they wouldn't go off until I took the battery cable wire off. Then on another day the brake light in the back window, got stuck and the turn signal wasn't lighting up(no brake , nor turn signal lights but it showed in the car like it was working.when hitting the blinkers. I have taken it to several car shops even the dealership to have it checked out. I was told that it wasn't nothing wrong, but got stopped by police on numerous occasions cs the car didn't have Bck lights. The last shop i took it to said that it was the cars electrical system. I've checked to see if there was recalls.Doesn'tshow anything. It should be recalls on this, cause that's a safety hazard. Knowing you just changed out the lights and then boom u have no lights to show your turning or just on the road period at night. This is dangerous , I've almost got rear ended by a semi n other vehicles that was behind me and i had my granddaughter in the vehicle. Please check into this for the safety of ppl like me. Hybrid System Malfunction. The "Hybrid System Warning! Safely Stop and Do Not Drive" appeared on the vehicle dashboard. While traveling on the highway or in town the vehicle will want to slow down then stop. The dealership's (Wyatt Johnson Hyundai) Clarksville, TN, maintenance tech have troubleshot the vehicle. Since my daughter and I have owned the vehicle, it has been seen by the dealer a few times during this time a transmission replacement was completed for the Hybrid System Malfunction, which did not solve the problem and I had to pay out almost $6,000. Still, same issue arises and also, I was told by another tech that the transmission is sealed and should not have been opened. The only thing we heard from the dealer(Wyatt Johnson Hyundai) was to come and pick up the car. When my son-n-law went to pick up the vehicle, the engine was still torn apart. They said they would fix it and then let us know when it is ready to be picked up. We have not heard anything from the dealer (Wyatt Johnson Hyundai) at all, assuming they are still working on it. Until, we received a letter from Express Auto the the vehicle was towed and reported abandoned. So, I drove to Clarksville, TN and trailered the vehicle back to Las Vegas, NV to have the Hyundai techs here diagnose the vehicle.

Approximately a month ago I notice that my passenger side low beam head light was not working on my 2012 Hyundai Sonata so I purchased a replacement H7 halogen bulb thinking it was simply a burned out bulb. I replace the bulb with the new bulb only to find the low beam was still not working. I tried the new bulb in the drivers side to rule out a bad new bulb. The bulb worked fine in the drivers side. I also inspected the connector found no obvious problem. So far I have not been able to get the passenger side working so I did some on line research and found that this is not an uncommon problem on Hyundai vehicles and particularly with the Sonata. It appears that this is a wiring or computer issue not easily resolved. I believe this is a significant safety issue that Hyundai should repair at no cost.

I found a re call (google) for stuck brake lights. 2011 - 2012 Sonatas. I purchased the car used, and was informed that everything is working and in order. I'm just curios if there were any other reports concerning this matter?

I was driving on a busy street when all of a sudden. My car reduce speed hesitated There was a pull over Safely and don't drive this vehicle warning Message Every light on the dash came on and shut off in the middle of a busy street. THANK GOD I DIDNT GET HIT Didn't get the chance to pull over the car just shut off. The whole car died I had to have it towed way I tried changing 12 V battery to a brand new one still didn't work. I've had it towed to hyundai dealer. What is wrong with this car? Still don't kno this happened in september of 2022 took it 2 different Hyundai dealerships. As I've been researching this is happening to a lot of people. With the same make a model car. I talk to corporate. They can't help me with anything because it's over a 150000 miles. You would think that they would help with some of the cause being the fact that is happening to all of the hybrid cars

This model does not have an engine immobilizer and the rear windows are not connected to the alarm system. My car was stolen in the middle of the day and there are no viable security measures for my car. This is incredibly dangerous and quite frankly ludicrous that Hyundai has not recalled the cars to install the proper security measures. I now have out of pocket expenses related to this incident and am still exposed to future theft because Hyundai failed and is continuing to fail ts consumers.

I recently purchased a Hyundai Sonata hybrid with 132K miles on it and it has been driving fine for at least two weeks until a few days back the car has been displaying a recurring alarm on the dashboard telling " hybrid system warming! Safely Stop and Do Not Drive " now as soon as I turn on the vehicle the alarm comes on immediately. It's been a week since the car is technically inoperable because if I attempt to drive the car it makes this horrible grinding sound which is terrifying considering if I drive like this it would probably cause more damage to the car, and I have look for information on this issue and have found many of these cases over the years that I can relate to but unfortunately there's no a recall of this problem. I'm taking the car to the dealership soon but I don't have any hopes that they will find a permanent fix for this since nobody has apparently. I'm just trying find some help with this issue. So far I just have lots of regrets about this purchase and just hoping I can find some help with this matter.

The lighting system on the front and back lights, tail lights and brake lights are shortaged and melts the housings thst the bulbs go in. I have had two of these cars with the same identical problems and my son has had two sonatas and I have more people that’s having the issue as well. It’s very dangerous because the tail lights work whenever and me as the driver can’t see behind me nor the person driving behind me will know that I’m stopping. I can’t drive my vehicles at all at this present time and has made s appointment with the company, Hyundai and filed a complaint as well. Something has to be done quickly to put this on the recall list because it’s very dangerous for myself and others on the national highways

My tail and brake lights sometimes work sometimes doesn't. Rear window brake light stays illuminated when car is turned off causing battery to drain. This problem has been on going for years. I can sometimes wiggle bulbs and make them work for a while but problem has been persistent for too many years. Tired of replacing bulbs.

Power steering loses power and window between speedometer and tach goes blank. Car keeps running but no power steering and cannot take out of park. Must restart the car to solve issue. Happened several times while at idle, in park. Happened once while in drive, at idle while stopped, and was able to drive forward when I discovered no power steering. Concerned it could happen while driving.

Our car experienced engine knocking and we took it to an independent repair shop. The repair shop informed us about the recall but Hyundai never did. The recall is because there is a defect in the engine in which friction caused by metal bits burned up the oil. The low level of oil causes the knocking. The repair shop filled our car engine with oil. We took the car to a Hyundai dealership but they refuse to do the repairs unless the engine is knocking even though the recall letter admits there is a potential safety issue if the engine is not replaced.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request?: Vehicle went into LIMP mode on highway (June 7th 2022). The next day, the vehicle would not start, despite battery replacement. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? When in limp mode, car would not accelerate. My vehicle could have been hit by another vehicle due to the sudden, unexpected decline in speed; Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Vehicle was towed to the Hyundai dealership the evening of June 10, 2022. I was informed by Hyundai that it would take 2 to 3 weeks before they could even look at my vehicle. Vehicle has not been diagnosed yet. It is still at Hyundai as of today, June 22, 2022. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The vehicle is currently awaiting diagnosis by Hyundai. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The vehicle went into limp mode. The next day it would not start.

The brake pedal stopper pad deteriorated, allowing the brake light switch plunger to remain extended when the brake pedal was released. This kept my break lights on even when the car was turned off, which lead to issues with my accelerator randomly giving out while I was on the road, and my traction control forced off.

It all started with the electronic system. Both of my brake lights burned, leaving huge holes in the back of my brake light bracket. Replace the whole brake assembly on both brake light fixtures, then now my horn is not working—nothing to do with the relay or fuse.

As I was driving on the highway, my car engine stalled and all the interior dashboard lights came on. I was unable to accelerate although all other features of my car worked (steering, brakes, radio, bluetooth, etc...). I was barely able to get off the highway safely as the highway I was on had no shoulder that was safely accessible. Luckily, I was in the far right lane already which allowed me to exit the highway. I was just barely able to exit the highway and move to the middle and far right lane of the service road before my car came to a complete stop. I attempted to turn my car off and back on without success. At this point, I could start to smell burning of something and knew I needed to exit the car immediately, however, I was unable to do so due to traffic on the driver side of my car. I noticed smoke coming from my engine which prompted to me to jump out of the car without continuing to pay attention to the traffic that was passing me. I called 911 to alert them of my car impeding traffic, potentially causing another wreck, and the potential that my car may be on fire. After making those statements to dispatch, flames shot forward from my hood and I was able to move away from my car. The fire department arrived on scene but not before the flames had reached 12+ feet as they were taller than the fire truck. The firefighters were able to put out the flames. My car engine was completely melted from the fire. At this point, the dealership, insurance agent or any other representative has determined a cause of the fire or has looked at my car. No warning lights to indicate a malfunction was visible prior to the incident. No noises or engine malfunctions were noted prior to the incident.

I keep getting this error message Hybrid System Warning! Safely Stop and Do not Drive with the caution symbol. I have take it to the dealership 5 times and they do not see anything wrong. Usually the message flash for a few seconds and then go away. Today it did something different. The display keep alternating with Check charging system and Hybrid System Warning! Safely Stop and Do not Drive along with a beeping sound. I had to pull over and restart the car. I travel in rural areas for work, and I am so afraid my car is going to stop in the middle on nowhere. When I googled the error message it appears so many other Sonata owners from 2011-2014 are experiencing the same problem. I have reported this to Hyundai warranty, but when they contact the dealership, they tell them nothing is wrong with my car. Please advise of what to do.

The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the rear taillights failed to illuminate upon depression of the brake pedal. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer where she was informed that the socket to replace the light bulb had melted and that due to the failure, both light bulbs could not be replaced. The contact also mentioned that a white smoke had emitted from her driver side headlight when she attempted to replace the light bulb. The contact was able to replace the driver side headlight bulb; however, the driver side headlight bulb would illuminate very dim. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.

Original Report: 1/28/22 to HyundaiUSA Problem with car started day after alignment. First noticed (while going up driveway) pressing accelerator did nothing - press again then OK. Got out to open gate, noticed brake lights on. Later (after dark), came out and brake lights on. Driving home noticed ESC light on - ESC off button had no effect. I found this exact description on "CarComplaints.com" from 2019 and it references recall #136. Next day I cranked the car, and the "ESC off" indicator came on. I was then able to turn off with the ESC off button. Update: 1/29/22 Next day same issue with brake light. Able to reset ESC light but it came back on after driving about 15 miles. I noticed that the issue with the sudden deceleration occurred while going 55 mph. It happened about 3 times in the 5 mile return trip. Releasing the accelerator pedal then pressing again provided acceleration. When I got out of the car, the brake light remained on. Update 1/30/22 The ESC light reset itself automatically when I cranked the car. While warming up the car in the garage, the brake light came on and I tapped the brake to turn off. This happened 4 times. I was pulling out of a side road onto a busy road with limited sight of oncoming traffic. As I started out, the acceleration died, and a car came around the curve/hill. I managed to release the accelerator and re-apply and got out of the driver’s way – he was able to slow down enough to avoid an accident. Issue happened several times while driving to my destination. A few minutes after going inside, the car security horn started sounding. I used the remote to turn off. I went back in, and it started blowing again. I pulled the fuse for the horn from under the hood. The ESC light did not come back on during this trip but the brake light did numerous times. My research found that the brake light switch has been blamed for some of these issues. But a faulty brake light switch would prevent engaging gear shift.

This morning when i drove the car to Bart station, just before i parked in the parking lot. the showboard showed "Hybrid System Warning, Safely Stop and Do Not Drive". So i stopped and parked the car in the parking space. i'm not sure what the issue is and if i still can drive it after i came back from my work. After i checked the website and found there're a lot of people have this same issue as this case. I did not see any of them have solution for it. So I believed that this is a big issue since it will cuase death if it happens in the high speed high way. please do the investigation and recall for it to save lives! appreciated in advance.

When driving in the car at any speed over 40 mph, the brake override will engage at random moments and slow the car down about 20 mph immediately. This makes the car extremely unsafe to drive especially on freeways because when going the speed limit of 60 mph, the car will suddenly slow down with no warning to me, the driver, and the car driving behind my car, also going 60 mph or more, will then have to slow down to my speed just as fast if not faster to avoid hitting the back of my car at an excessive speed. This problem first appeared around July 6th, 2021 and has been an ongoing and worsening issue since then. There is a similar recall that has been put out on other cars, but my car has not been included in that recall even though this is clearly a problem affecting my model as well. I ask that my model be added to the recall list to avoid other people possibly getting into an accident.

ON 05/26/21 THIS VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO CROWN HYUNDAI FOR AN ENGINE RECALL AND WAS NOT RUNNING. IN FACT, SINCE PURCHASED AT THE AUCTION IT HAS NEVER RAN MORE THAN 30 FEET THEN SUTS OFF. TECH SAID, COMPUTER RESPONDED WITH A FAULTY WHEEL SENSOR, A DEAD BATTERY, AND FAULT ABS SENSOR. I PICKED UP THE CAR AND PUT NEW BATTERY IN IT, AND A LEFT REAR WHEEL SENSOR AND REPORTED BY HYUNDAI. OUR MECHANIC SAID TAKE BACK TO HYUNDAI TO RESET THE ABS SENSOR, SO ON06/24/21 WE DID RETURN THE VEHICLE TO CROWN HYUNDAI AND WAS TOLK NOW THEY COULD NOT SET THE SENSOR AS THE BATTERY WAS THE WRONG TYPE, NOW A CODE FOR A FLAP DOOR AND AN ALLEGATION OF THE VEHICLE BEING WRECKED IN THE FRONT END CAUSING DOOR DAMAGE. MY RIGHT HEADLIGHT HAS ALWAYS BEEN LOOSE BUT NO DAMAGE. NOW THE COMPUTER SAYS THE DOOR PLAP AND FRONT BUMPER DAMAGE IS CAUSING 30 MORE DEFAULTS TO POP UP MY WRECKER DRIVER WILL TELL YOU THE CAR WAS NOT DRIVING BUT WOULD START AND MOVE UNTIL SENSOR SHUT DOWN. On one of the first occasions, I had just exited the Lincoln tunnel when the "Hybrid System Warning Safely Pull over" came blaring along with the "Check engine" light. I safely pulled over and noticed the car would act as if it was in "neutral" when it was actually in "Drive". I shut off the car and eventually I was able to drive.

My break lights and head lights are constantly blowing out, I've had multiple repair orders to prove this & can have records pulled from my pull overs. My back up camera now has an electrical issue and will no longer come on. Also when I'm driving the gas pedal just stops working while driving!!! Very very dangerous. My car is well kept and maintained there is NO reason for these issues to be happening aside from a manufacturer issue. I know plenty of people with the same year make and model as me and they all have the same issues. There really needs to be recalls put out on these issues as they are a safety concerns and they are putting me and my children in danger every day. I wish I had researched these issues before buying a Hyundai. I WILL NEVER BUY ONE AGAIN especially if these issues do not get resolved.

When I learned my right brake light was out and upon further investigating I found that the socket for brake bulb was melted as well. I now need to replace the socket and wiring so the bulb will hopefully work properly. When I took my car in for an oil change recently, I was told the brake socket had melted the brake light assembly. Also which will now need to be replaced as well (Quoted $150 plus labor). Next thing is a little hard to explain, but short time later I was driving on freeway and my car will suddenly stop accelerating and start slowing down. Then will kick back up again like nothing happened, car didn't lose power during this. All power was sill on radio, lights ect.. The first time this happened it was so quick I didn't know what to think. Not long after that my daughter was driving this time and it did it again repeatedly will stops accelerating (on off on off on off). To the point we were slowing down quite a bit and had to put the flashers on, as suddenly as it started it stopped. Again no loss of power or steering ect. The only light that came on was my traction control light and wouldn't go off even when pressing the button. Since there wasn't any check engine light showing on instrument panel I have no clue what could be the problem. Side note I have had issues with my cruise control not wanting to work or occasionally will work. Two days later after this incident my daughter told me that all my lights we're on and doors were unlock. Car wasn't dead at that point. Turned them all the way off just in case but another day or so later car is unlocked and completely dead took a very long time to get started back up. At this point I have to disconnect the battery so that the lights won't go on and kill the battery. Outside of these issues I've had no problems with the car absolutely love my car. But am very concerned.

THEN IT COULD NOT GET OVER 40 AND ENGINE WAS REVVING HIGH. TOWEF TO DEALER. THEY DETERMINED FAILED TRANSMISSION AND ELECTRIC MOTOR. PURCHASED USED PARTS AND HAD THEM INSTALLED FOR 4K. NIGHTMARE VEHICLE. AWFUL SUPPORT FROM HYUNDAI. NO WAY I WOULD EVER BUY ANOTHER.

INCLUDING CONTINENTAL TIRES THAT HYUNDAIS HORRIBLE SUSPENSION RUINED AT 16K MILES(TIRE WARRANTY 70K MILES) AND BOTH SWAY BARS AND SWAY BAR LINK. WHICH MEANS I COULD HAVE ROLLED THE CAR AT ANY CURVE.AXLES WERE CHANGED TWICE ON THIS CAR AS THEY TOLD ME " MANUFACTORY FAULTY" AXLES THEY PUT ON AND OTHER SUSPENSION PARTS. TIRES WERE ROTATED AND ALIGNED BY THEM! IF THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH PERSON WORKING ON MY CAR DAMAGED BOTH OF MY FRONT DOORS WHEN LETTING THE CAR OFF THE LIFT.THEN THE DEALER TRIED TO COVER UP THE DAMAGE AND SIGN ME THE CAR BACK! CAR HAS SOME SERIOUS ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITH INTERIOR/EXTERIOR. LIGHTS MELTING, BULBS BURNING AND NOW THE CAR DOORS LOCKS. BETTER YET NEW RECALL SAYS IF YOU HAD YOUR ENGINE REPLACED YOU ARE IN A DANGER OF THE FIRE.HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO TRUST THIS "CERTIFIED DEALER" ? + THE OTHER 8 RECALLS AND CLASS ACTIONS ABOUT THIS CAR- HYUNDAI NEEDS TO BE FORCED TO BUY BACK THESE ALL OF THESE CARS. MY CAR WOULD NO LONGER START. I RECEIVED A JUMP. THE CAR STARTED. IT WOULD NOT START AGAIN. I RECEIVED A JUMP. THE CAR STARTED. I LET IT RUN 40 MINS. A DIFFERENT MECHANIC CAME OUT FOR THE STARTED REPLACEMENT BUT WANTED TO RUN SOME ADDITIONAL TESTS DUE TO THIS BEING A COMMON SONATA ISSUE. HE JUMPED THE CAR AND IMMEDIATELY IT STARTED BY BYPASSING THE BREAK. HE TESTED THE BATTERY (3RD TIME)--PASSED. ALTERNATOR--PASSED. STARTER--PASSED. HE ADVISED ME TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM PINPOINT THE RELAY/SIGNAL THAT WAS NOT PROPERLY WORKING. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY REQUIRED ANOTHER DIAGNOSTIC. THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMS THERE A BAD BATTERY, DESPITE IT HAVING PASSED 3X PRIOR AND WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING FURTHER BECAUSE THEY SAY ITS A BAD BATTERY AND NOTHING ELSE--DESPITE ME CONSISTENTLY TELLING THEM THE CAR HAS HAD ELECTRICAL ISSUES SINCE PURCHASED (CPO) AND THIS BEING A [GOOGLE-ABLE AND] VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THE 2012 SONATA. LESS THAN 3 MONTHS AGO, I EXPERIENCED A COMMON ISSUE WITH THE BRAKE LIGHTS NOT TURNING OFF AS WELL. THE FIRST TIME I WENT OUT TO START MY VEHICLE AND IT WOULDN'T START WHILE IN MY DRIVEWAY. I CALLED HYUNDAI FREEHOLD AND THEY SAID THERE 'MAY BE' A PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE BUT THEY WOULDN'T KNOW UNTIL THEY BROUGHT IT IN. (REALLY, EVEN WITH THE MASSIVE RECALLS ACROSS THE NATION? OKAY.) THEY WOULD NOT PAY FOR THE TOW. THEY WOULD REIMBURSE ME AFTER THE FACT. I PLAYED DUMB AND HAD IT TOWED TO THEM BUT REPORTED IT TO HYUNDAI CORPORATE. THEN HYUNDAI OF FREEHOLD ADMITTED THERE WAS A RECALL ON MY VEHICLE AND THEY WOULD GIVE ME A NEW ENGINE. THE SECOND TIME I WAS COMING OUT OF THE COLLEGE FROM A NIGHT CLASS AND IT WOULDN'T START. I CALLED THEM THE NEXT MORNING AND THEY SAID THE SAME THING (WE WON'T PAY FOR THE TOW WE WILL REIMBURSE YOU). THEY KNEW BY THE SECOND TIME AROUND THAT I HAD PURCHASED A THIRD PARTY WARRANTY SO EITHER WAY THEY WOULDN'T BE STUCK WITH THE BILL. I HAD IT TOWED BY THE THIRD PARTY AND PAID THE DIFFERENCE AS THE FIRST TIME. THIS TIME THEY SAID IT WAS THE STARTER. (HMMM, OKAY). NOW HERE I AM A FEW MONTHS LATER. AND I GO OUT TO MY CAR AND THE CAR ISN'T STARTING (AGAIN). SHOULD I BOTHER TO CALL THEM AND ASK THEM IF THEY WILL PAY FOR THE TOW THIS TIME? WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE RIGHT AS LONG AS I'M NOT PAYING ANYTHING BUT HE DIFFERENCE AFTER THIRD PARTY PAYMENT YOU ASK? IT'S THE PRINCIPLE! WELL I BOUGHT THE CAR A FEW YEARS BACK. I LEARNED ABOUT A FEW RECALLS ON THE CAR AND TOOK THE VEHICLE IN. HAD THE OIL CHANGED, THE AIR FILTERS AND INTAKE FILTERS CHANGED. THE CAR MAKES THIS NOISE LIKE A RATTLE NOISE. I TURN OFF MY MUSIC AND WAS LISTENING TO THE NOISE. THE CAR SEEMED LIKE IT WAS LOSING POWER WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND ACCELERATING WAS DECLINING . ALL OF A SUDDEN CHE K ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. NOT EVEN A MOMENT LATER THE ENGINE TURNS OFF. I WAS SCARED. WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC CAR BEGAN TO JERK AND LOSE SPEED THOUGH THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING. THE CAR STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF MOVING TRAFFIC. TRANSMISSION FLUID SPILLED OUT PROFUSELY. TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED BUT STARTED TO SLIP AGAIN THE SAME DAY I PICKED IT UP AFTER NEW (REMANUFACTURED) TRANSMISSION WAS INSTALLED BY THE HYUNDAI DEALER. PRIOR TO THIS TRANSMISSION ISSUE, THE ALTERNATOR IN MY CAR FAILED WHILE DRIVING IN THE MIDDLE OF MOVING TRAFFIC. THIS COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FAILURE OCCURRED SHORTLY AFTER A NEW ENGINE WAS INSTALLED BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL ENGINE SEIZED AND FAILED PRIOR. ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED. THE NEWLY INSTALLED ALTERNATOR FAILED AGAIN. A NEW ALTERNATOR WAS ONCE AGAIN INSTALLED. I AM NOW HAVING SIMILAR ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS YET AGAIN AND THERE IS A CURRENT CONCERN THAT THE VEHICLE MAY POSSIBLY STOP SUDDENLY AND HAZARDOUSLY AGAIN WHILE IN MOTION.

IT HAS ONLY BEEN TWO WEEKS SINCE I TOOK THIS VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE COMPUTER SYSTEM UPDATED DUE TO ENGINE FAILURE ISSUES IN OTHER VEHICLES. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE LESS THAN A YEAR AGO AND IT DOES NOT SHOW FROM WHAT I CAN TELL A RECALL. HOWEVER I WAS INSTRUCTED BY THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED INTO THEM SO THEY CAN CHECK TO SEE IF IT IS ENGINE FAILURE OR A NUMBER OF RECALL ISSUES THAT I HAVE NOT BEEN AWARE OF.

I WAS DENIED ASSISTANCE ON 9/20 AND CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP TO BEGIN WORK AT MY COSTS. THE CAR IS STILL AT THE DEALERSHIP AS THEY ARE STATING HYUNDAI CANNOT RELEASE THE WIRING HARNESS. RESEARCH ON WHY BROUGHT ME TO SIMILAR COMPAINTS THE APPEAR TO WARRANT A RECALL.

HE TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF THEN TRIED TO RESTART IT AND NOTHING HAPPEN AND POWER WAS DEAD IN THE CAR. THEN HE SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE DOORS WON'T OPEN SO HE HAD TO CLIMB OUT THOUGH THE SUNROOF TO SAFETY. HE OPENED THE HOOD AND THE ENGINE WAS INFLAMED WITH FIRE. HE CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, THEY CAME AND PUT THE FIRE OUT. THE REASON I'M FILING THIS COMPLIANT IS BECAUSE HE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY HURTOR KILLED IF THE SUNROOF WAS CLOSE. HYUNDAI HAS NO EXPLANATION FOR WHY THIS IS HAPPENING AND MY VEHOWAS TOTAL LOST. NEXT, THING I KNOW PEOPLE ARE FLASHING THEIR LIGHTS AND BEEPING THEIR HORNS AND ACTING STRANGE TRYING TO GET ME AND MY FIANC'S ATTENTION. WHEN WE BOTH LOOKED BACK WE SAW THAT THE CAR WAS ON FIRE WHILE WE WERE MOVING 45 MPH DOWN THE HIGHWAY. WE PULLED OVER ALL OF THE BYSTANDERS HELPED US PUT OUT THE FIRE. WHEN IT WAS FINALLY OUT THE LIGHT HAD MELTED OFF AND THE ONLY THING THAT WAS HANGING WAS WHAT WAS LEFT OF THE ELECTRICAL WIRES THAT ATTACHED ONCE WAS THE LIGHT BULB.

THE RADIO WILL SOMETIMES TURN OFF AS WELL. IF I PRESS ANY OF THE VOLUME BUTTONS ON THE STEERING WHEEL FOR THE RADIO, THE CAR THINKS I'M TRYING TO INITIATE VOICE COMMANDS TO CALL SOMEONE. IF I TRY TO TURN ON MY HIGH BEAMS, SOMETIMES IT WORKS, OTHER TIMES THE HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF. ALL OF THESE THINGS HAPPEN WHETHER THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY OR MOVING ON ANY TYPE OF ROAD. THE VEHICLE IS DESIGNED SO THAT IF YOU LEAVE THE HEADLIGHTS ON, REMOVE THE KEYS, AND LOCK THE VEHICLE, THE HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF. IT STILL DOES THIS, BUT THE LIGHTS WILL TURN ON AGAIN LATER AND TRY TO KILL THE BATTERY.

THERE WAS NO FIRE TO EXTINGUISH. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALER (FAIRFAX HYUNDAI, 10925 FAIRFAX BLVD, FAIRFAX, VA, 22030) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE ENGINE WILL BE REPAIRED UNDER THE WARRANTY. THE MANUFACTURER CONFIRMED THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO A BROCHURE THAT WAS RECEIVED IN THE MAIL THE DAY AFTER THE FAILURE, BUT IT WAS NOT A RECALL. WHEN I FOUND OUT I WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT DID THE WORK AND GOT A PRINTOUT OF RECEIPT SHOWING THAT I PAID FOR THAT RECALL, ALSO ADVISED THAT I HAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE LIGHTING SYSTEM FOR THE CAR. WELL IT HAS BEEN MONTHS LATER, CAN'T SEEM TO GET A RESPONSE FROM IN REGARDS TO MY REFUND AND I WAS ADVISED THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO GET THE LIGHTS CHECKED. I HAVE HAD MY LIGHTS TO GO COMPLETELY OUT WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THAT INCLUDES INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR LIGHTS. I NAVE HAD THE INSIDE LIGHTS TO GO OFF AND COME BACK ON SECONDS LATER. IT CAUSED ENOUGH HEAT FOR THE BULB TO BECOME LODGED AND STUCK INTO THE ASSEMBLY DUE TO THE BULB ASSEMBLY MELTING AROUND IT. I WOULD HAVE BEEN BETWEEN SEPT.-DEC. 2014. I HAVE ONLY BEEN REIMBURSED $310.00 FROM HYUNDAI TO DATE FOR THE FIRST STARTER. I GET MY OIL CHANGED EVERY 3,000-5,000 MILES. I TOOK THE CAR TO LITHIA HYUNDAI IN FRESNO TWICE, JAN. 2016 FOR RECALL 132 ' THEY CLAIMED NOTHING IS WRONG. SEVEN MONTHS LATER I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. MY DOME LIGHT STOPPED WORKING RIGHT SO I HAD TO TURN IT OFF COMPLETELY. THEN PARKING TAIL LIGHT STOPPED WORKING. WELL THANK GOD I PURCHASED EXTENDED WARRANTY THEY FIXED AN AXLE, CLOCK SPRING REPLACED BUTTONS ON STEERING WHEEL, I HAD TO BUY A NEW BATTERY AND STILL THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. RECENTLY AFTER THIS WHOLE ORDEAL I STARTED WITH THE DEALER IN AUGUST AND DIDN'T GET MY CAR FIXED AND BACK TO ME UNTIL ALMOST CHRISTMAS! GOT MY CAR BACK TAIL LIGHT STILL DOESN'T WORK, CRUISE IS SOMEWHAT FIXED RADIO DID IT AGAIN AND GUESS WHAT, THE HEADLIGHT BURNED OUT AGAIN A WEEK AFTER I PICKED UP THE CAR!!! ARRRGGGHHHH! MECHANIC ONLY TESTED THE BATTERY AT THIS TIME, BATTERY IS FINE, CAUSE IS UNKNOWN. 8/3/15 ENGINE SEIZED WITH WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 ON A STATE HIGHWAY. ENGINE WAS REPLACED AND LATER A RECALL WAS ANNOUNCED BY THE MANUFACTURER. 9/18/16 VEHICLE SHUT OFF AGAIN WHILE DRIVING ON AN INTERSTATE DOING APPROXIMATELY 80 MPH WHILE SWITCHING LANES. LOST POWER STEERING BRIEFLY AND THE VEHICLE CAME RIGHT BACK ON, ALL LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASH, RADIO CAME BACK ON BLASTING (WAS NOT LIKE THAT PRIOR TO SHUTTING OFF). MAYBE IT WAS A COINCIDENCE OR NOT, BUT THE SECOND I TURNED MY LEFT TURN SIGNAL ON, IS WHEN THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF. IT CAME BACK ON MAYBE 3 SECONDS LATER. ORIGINAL DEALERSHIP CLAIMED A LOOSE CONNECTION WITH THE BATTERY CAUSED IT, HOWEVER, THEY DID NO FURTHER TESTING OR INVESTIGATING. IT IS CURRENTLY AT ANOTHER HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP GETTING ASSESSED. FROM 2/20/15 UNTIL PRESENT, I HAVE ALSO BEEN EXPERIENCING THE CONTROLS ON THE STEERING WHEEL NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY: EX. THE MODE BUTTON WILL MUTE THE VOLUME, THE CHANNEL CHANGER AND VOLUME WILL START MAKING CALLS ON MY BLUETOOTH CALL LOG OR ACTIVATE THE VOICE CONTROLS. VOLUME WILL SOMETIMES CHANGES THE CHANNEL OR WILL INCREASE INSTEAD OF DECREASE AND VICE VERSA. SOMETIMES THE CHANNEL CHANGER WILL CONTROL THE VOLUME OR MODE, THEY DO WHAT THEY WANT TO WHEN THEY WANT TO. CRUISE CONTROL IS INOPERABLE MOST OF THE TIME. I HAVE REPLACED THE BULBS WEEKLY OVER A YEAR TO DATE. THESE BULBS ARE ALL BEING REPLACED BY A REPUTABLE SHOP AND NOT AN INDIVIDUAL. I HAVE RECEIPTS TO CONFIRMED THE NUMBER OF BULBS THAT HAVE BEEN REPLACED SINCE MY PURCHASE IN DEC 2014. I STOPPED BY CLEM'S GOODYEAR TO INSPECT THE CONSTANT BULB OUTAGE. I WAS IN FORMED THE ENTIRE CASE HAS MELTED DUE THE TYPE OF BULBS HYUNDAI MANUFACTURER ARE USING AND COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE A FIRE OR AN EXPLOSION. THE MECHANIC CALLED HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP FOR LIGHTING KIT AND WAS INFORMED THEY KEEP THIS KIT HEAVILY STOCKED BECAUSE OF THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS THEY GET REGARDING THE READ BREAK LIGHTS FREQUENT OUTAGE.QUOTED PRICE $540. SO I STOPPED BY BENTLEY HYUNDAI TO DISCUSS THE INFORMATION PROVIDED TO THE MECHANIC. I OVERHEARD THE SERVICE MECHANIC CUSTOMER SERVICE REP SAY TO A MECHANIC WE GOT ANOTHER ONE WITH THE SAME ISSUES. WHEN THE SERVICE REP RETURNED HE INFORMED THEY HAVE THE PART AND QUOTED ME $440 TO REPLACE. THIS IS AN INDICATION THEY IS A LIGHTING/ELECTRICAL MECHANICAL PROBLEM THAT COULD POTENTIALLY KILL SOMEONE. WHEN THE SPEED REACHED 40 MPH, SHE COULD NOT ACCELERATE ANYMORE AND HENCE QUICKLY PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD (UPON MY REQUEST). DUE TO THE HEAVY TRAFFIC, SHE WAS EXTREMELY LUCKY NOT TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT. WHEN I ARRIVED TO SWITCH CARS WITH HER, THE CAR STARTED FINE AND ACCELERATED APPROPRIATELY. I TOOK IT STRAIGHT TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP WHO AFTER RUNNING DIAGNOSTICS CAME UP THE FOLLOWING: NO CODES STORED IN MEMORY AND NO SIGNS OF WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THE CAR TO ACT LIKE THIS. THEY RECOMMENDED A THROTTLE BODY CLEANING WHICH IS CURRENTLY BEING COMPLETED (I AM WRITING THIS FROM DELRAY BEACH HYUNDAI). THEY STATED THE THROTTLE BODY STICKING MAY BE THE CAUSE, BUT WENT ON TO ADMIT THEY REALLY HAD NO IDEA AS DIAGNOSTICS GAVE THEM NO INFORMATION. DURING COLD WEATHER, THE 2.0 TURBO SONATA ENGINE WILL CUT POWER TO THE CAR AND GO INTO A "LIMP" MODE IF AN OVER BOOST CODE (USUALLY P0605 & P2110 ), IS TRIGGERED. THIS CAUSES AN UNSAFE SITUATION AS THERE IS VERY LITTLE POWER AVAILABLE TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OR CAN CAUSE A REAR VEHICLE CRASH. THERE HAVE BEEN A COUPLE TIMES WHERE THIS HAS HAPPENED ON 0 DEGREE DAYS OR EVEN AT 30 DEGREES. THIS WILL HAPPEN AT ANY SPEED IF THE BOOST PRESSURE IS EXCEEDED AND MAKES FOR A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE ECU SHOULD NOT BE CUTTING POWER OR FUEL, IT SHOULD BE REDUCING THE BOOST TO COMPENSATE FOR TEMPERATURE. THE ONLY WAY TO RESTORE THE POWER TO THE ENGINE, IS TO SHUT THE CAR OFF AND RESTART.....CODES WILL STILL BE ACTIVE BUT THE POWER WILL RESTORE ITSELF.

IT DOES THIS WHEN YOU INITIALLY SET THE SPEED OR IF YOU BRAKE AND THEN HIT THE "RESUME" BUTTON. IN THE CASE OF "RESUME", IF YOU INITIALLY SET IT AT 65 MPH AND USE THE BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN AND THEN USE THE "RESUME" BUTTON, THE CAR WILL SPEED UP TO 69 OR 70 BEFORE GOING BACK DOWN TO 65. THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL DO THIS NO MATTER WHAT SPEED YOU INITIAL SET IT AT. I TOOK THE CAR BACK IN AND THE SERVICE PEOPLE THOUGHT IT WAS STRANGE. WALKED OUT OF STORE I HAD BEEN SHOPPING IN FOR OVER AN HOUR AND CAR WAS IN FLAMES. THE FIRE INVESTIGATOR EXPLAINED IT AS AN ELECTRICAL SHORT THAT STARTED AT THE MAIN ENGINE WIRE HARNESS AND MELTED THE TUBING/WIRING ALL THROUGH THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT DOWN NEAR PASSENGER HEADLIGHT AND THE MELTING WIRES/TUBING/RUBBER DRIPPED AND IGNITED ON A PILE OF LEAVES UNDERNEATH THE CAR IN THE PARKING SPACE. ON OR ABOUT OCTOBER 1, 2103, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT ON THE DASH CAME ON AS I STARTED THE CAR AND BACKED OUT OF THE GARAGE. I CHECKED AND RECHECKED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO MAKE SURE IT WAS OFF AND THE PEDAL WAS NOT DEPRESSED. EVERY OTHER TIME OR SO, WHEN WE USED THE CAR, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND WE ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECKED TO ENSURE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS OFF. ON OCTOBER 7, 2103, WE WENT TO THE JENKINS HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND AFTER THEY CHECKED THE VEHICLE, THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES OR THE COMPUTER. AS WE LEFT THE PLACE, THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON FOR THE 20 MILE TRIP HOME. THE HYUNDAI WARRANTY STATES THAT WE SHOULD NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE BRAKES COULD LOCK UP AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. NO ISSUES UNTIL OCT 7TH WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 25MPH ALL LIGHTS LIT AGAIN ON DASH AND SPEEDOMETER AND RPM'S IMMEDIATELY WENT TO ZERO EVEN THOUGH I WAS STILL MOVING. HAD TO BE TOWED AGAIN TO DEALERSHIP. I MANAGE TO PULL TO THE SHOULDER AVOIDING GETTING STRUCK BY A CAR OR TRUCK AND I AM NOT ABLE TO TURN ON THE CAR BACK ON. THE LIGHTS ON THE CAR WOULD NOT SHUT OFF WHEN LOCKING AND ACTIVATING ALARM. I RESTARTED THE CAR AND SHUT IT OFF AGAIN, THEN THEY SHUT OFF. ONCE THE CAR STOPPED, I PUT IT IN PARK AND THE LIGHTS STAYED ON. I TURNED THE KEY TO THE OFF POSITION AND THEN BACK ON AND IT TURNED RIGHT BACK ON AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED. THE CAR WAS THEN TOWED TO THE DEALER AND WAS IN SERVICE FOR 5 DAYS, AND THEY CLAIM TO BE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE FAILURE. SINCE THEY ARE UNABLE TO REPLICATE, AND LEMON LAW STATE THAT AN ISSUE MUST OCCUR 3 TIMES, I HAVE NO COURSE OF ACTION TO TAKE BESIDES BUYING A NEW CAR AND TAKING ON ADDED EXPENSE, OR DRIVING THIS CAR, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT BE SAFE FROM DEFECT AND HOPE IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN. THE CONSUMER WOULD LIKE A CLEAR EXPLANATION OF THE PUSH BUTTON ENGINE STAR/STOP SWITCH. HE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS IT A COMPUTER FUNCTION OR A MANUAL ELECTRICAL DISCONNECT TO THE VEHICLES ELECTRONICS.
