The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving 45-50 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond and hesitated. The brake and the hybrid system warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to pull to the right side of the road and waited for her husband to arrive. The contact turned off the vehicle and restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle operated as intended. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the hybrid ECU needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the dealer checked the error on the brake failure light that was illuminated, but had not yet gotten a response back from the manufacturer. The vehicle was taken to Auto Zone where it was diagnosed, and determined that the hybrid ECU needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on several occasions for the past three years. The engine was replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure and informed the contact that they have not heard from the dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 128,000.

Braking system failed on my Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2013. I was driving on the highway and suddenly the vehicle started a constant beeping noise and the dashboard illuminated with a message that read "Hybrid System Warning! Safely Stop and Do Not Drive" as I driving 70 MPH on the highway, causing me to have to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid being rear-ended by vehicles traveling behind, this is a very dangerous issue, and Hyundai is placing safety of others on the lower rung of their priority list. I had the vehicle taken to the shop where I was initially told that the issue is contaminated braking fluid, the need to replace brakes and the brake master cylinder. Shortly after being notified of the issues that technician diagnosed I agreed to have these items replaced. However, when I went to pickup my car after being notified that services were "completed" the vehicle continued to have the same issues, the vehicle never made it off of the Hyundai car lot. The vehicle has been with Hyundai for over 2 months and suddenly I am being told that there is an ABS issue and that it will cost over 5,000 dollars to complete repairs. I scoured the internet and noticed that there are many other complaints similar to mine.

I am driving and all of a sudden the brakevsystem lighthouse on bthe hybird system begins to fail and ge car loses power i almost got hit 4 times already, from this . The system starts to ding ,shut down and states to bring to a certified mechanic ir dealership. Hyundai has on line tgeybarevaware and this problem for this model and should be taken care if no charge for bis a problem for this year model and hybird model 3 diff we rent areas on lounge through Hyundai it states this a known issue. The part to replace and had a certified ASE mechanic on computer look and went through the computer system and stated it is a power booster brake sensor. This is starednin 3 different areas bon Hyundai websitebfornthe model and year. Sudden brake failure while driving at speeds around 40 mph, where both the accelerator and brakes became unresponsive, forcing me to coast before regaining limited braking ability after repeated pumping or having to "restart" the car completely. During these events, loud grinding or dragging noises and vibrations were present. Despite adequate brake fluid levels and pad condition, the brake pedal went to the floor. Could be a potential hydraulic or booster failure. It is available for inspection upon request. I was in the car with a significant other at the time of the incident, this happened around 9 times on a very busy highway during a rush. I have been able to reproduce the problem on my own but has now been inspected by a dealer or independent service center. Online resources indicate others with the same symptoms under same conditions have. The component has not been manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. But I have very recently (around 4 months ago) passed a vehicle inspection. There were no warnings or other symptoms prior to failure, it's very sudden and having no idea when and where it would happen makes the car inoperable.

Despite Safety Recall 251 issued in December 2023 for an ABS fire hazard, my vehicle continues to experience sudden loss of acceleration, engine shutdowns, and persistent dashboard warnings. Failed Recall Repairs & Lack of Transparency Since receiving the recall notice, my vehicle has been serviced multiple times at Thompson Hyundai in Dundalk, MD, yet the defects persist. When I requested service records to verify recall repairs, I was told that Thompson Hyundai’s acquisition by Heritage prevents them from providing full documentation—only three edited records missing key details. This raises concerns about: 1.Whether recall repairs are actually resolving safety defects. 2.Hyundai’s failure to maintain proper repair documentation. 3.The risk that other Hyundai vehicles remain unsafe due to incomplete recall fixes. Life-Threatening Breakdowns & Financial Hardship Since Hyundai’s supposed “fix,” my vehicle has broken down at least eight times, including major highways and intersections. On [XXX], on [XXX], my car suddenly lost power in heavy traffic, nearly causing a multi-vehicle accident. As a result: •I lost my job due to missed work from repeated breakdowns. •I suffered severe emotional distress, including PTSD-like symptoms and asthma attacks requiring medical attention. •I am facing financial instability from lost income and costly rental vehicles. Request for NHTSA Investigation Given Hyundai’s failure to resolve these defects, I urge NHTSA to: 1.Investigate whether Hyundai’s recall repairs fully resolve the defect. 2.Review dealerships’ recall documentation practices. 3.Determine if further regulatory action is needed to protect consumers. I am pursuing direct resolution with Hyundai but am bringing this to NHTSA in the interest of public safety. I appreciate your review and look forward to your response. After starting, got a warning stating check hybrid braking, do not drive. When going forward, brake pedal went to floor, heard heavy grinding noise and vehicle stopped accelerating. Had to use the emergency brakes to avoid an accident. Hyundai says they can’t find a problem. Now I can’t even drive it back to the dealer! Did an internet search and many other hybrid owners have reported the same issue. I just want to have Hyundai buy the car back at this point. It only has a little over 50,000 miles on it.
There is no lights at all on the brake lights but the brake light in the back window stays on all the time the dim head light only lets one side work
Brake lights do not illuminate when parking lights are engaged. We have replaced the socket multiple times. The standard 1157 bulb causes the socket to melt and has deformed the housing for the bulb from extreme heat from the bulb. Replaced the socket 3 times in 3 months this last time it stopped working within 4 days. The obvious safety risk is that cars following the vehicle not being able to determine when the car is braking for a stop at night. The secondary concern is that the lights pose a fire hazard.
I was pulled over by law enforcement due to both brake lights being out. Further investigation while changing the bulbs for the 3rd time in 1 year found the housing was deformed and plastic around the bulb housing was melted. The left light bulb was completely black and was difficult to replace the plug back into the plastic housing. The right light bulb metal piece melted into the socket and the glass part of the bulb fell off the metal piece and would not come out of the brake light assembly as if it was now to big to fit throught the hole. This bulb broke off the metal piece and fell into the brake light assembly. After using pliers to remover the broken metal piece from the bulb socket. The new bulb was placed and still could not fit in the hole it is designed to fit. Further inspection reveals the plastic housing the bulb should fit has melted and can no longer accept the new bulb or removal of the previous bulb. This is a safety hazard as the bulb and wiring gets too hot and could heat up the plastic to the point of burning the inside of the trunk. As well as continuing replacement for the bulb of which now cannot be replaced. Potenial safety risk for an accident if the brake lights cannot be replaced due to warping or melted housing. There was no warning or safety notice provided. Until I researched and found the problem has been reported by many owners of this make and model and there is even a recall that went out in January 2024 for the exact issue. I reported this to the dealer who informed me my vehicle is not apart of the recall even though my vehicle meets all requirements of the recall and extended warranty for the recall. Year, make, model, within mileage requirements and the safety issue being present. They want to charge me just to confirm the issue and possible charge for the repair.

Around mid-April of 2023, I was driving and i attempted to LIGHTLY apply my brakes and an alarm starts going off. Then the brakes VIOLENTLY start grinding. I went from 50mph to an immediate 10mph. The dealership said they replaced the fuse that SHOULD solve the problem. It did not. My car has been sitting at the dealership for a whole year now. They have not been able to update me on when it will be fixed. They have made ZERO attempts to provide me with a reasonable accommodation for my ONLY form of transportation being their lawn ornament for a year. I lost my job. I lost my place to live. And they are doing nothing. Now they say they're going to be replacing fuses to fix the issue but they already tried that and it did nothing. Every time I call to ask about an update, they put me on hold for over 10 minutes and then say there's nothing they can do at this time. The only thing they have tried to do is attempt to get me to buy a whole new car, which is out of the question because mine is completely paid off. This has seriously affected mine and my child's life. I don't even have a vehicle to go grocery shopping or make it to dr appointments or shoot functions because I have no way to get there.
after 5 months Hyundai does not have a remedy for NHTSA Recall Number 23V651000 which is an acknowledged fire hazard. What is NHTSA doing ro encourage Hyundai to move more quickly?
I see that the recall notice was issued in September of 2023 but I have to say that for no recall remedy to be available yet is disheartening. I drive my car every day and it is the only car I have, because of that I risk my life everyday. My car loses power because of this recall daily and it ranges from 3-6 times a day. I lose power on the highway, the main roads and back roads, it does not matter the speed or time of day. I would like them to push out a fix now. Eventually I will end up in an accident because sadly I cannot afford to get into a new car or a used car.
The fix for campaign 251 recall is taking too long.
On [XXX], my brakes failed on my 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid on a busy interstate in Atlanta, GA. I had it towed to Ed Voyles Hyundai in Smyrna, GA and after "looking at it" they were not able to diagnose the issue. I informed them my brakes went out, they ran a diagnostic test and found where the message came across the dash, but stated it was fine and to bring it back if it happened again. On [XXX], it happened again. My brakes failed and the same alert was sounding off in my vehicle. I took it to Ed Voyles again and they were finally able to determine it was the ABS module on my vehicle. This was due to an electrical short in the brake system. I found out it is the same part as the recall. I emailed the service manager and he agreed. However, Hyundai Motor America will not allow them to remedy the issue because they haven't "come up with a remedy". The recall is listed as severe! Not only will it catch on fire, but the brakes also fail! There is a burning smell that comes from under my car and I am not sure how there is no remedy for a recall that could cost HMA way more than to replace some ABS modules. I don't feel safe driving my vehicle and I am not sure how to get more attention to this matter. It is immensely unsafe to allow millions of people to drive in a potential failing brake fire hazard. Hyundai is taking too long to fix the Campaign 251 recall for the fire hazard associated with the ABS system. What can you do to speed up the solution and repairs?
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35-65 MPH, the vehicle decelerated unintendedly. In addition, while turning the steering wheel to the left or the right, there was an abnormal clicking noise coming from the steering column. Most recently, while driving at unknown speeds, the brake pedal required excessive force to bring the vehicle to a stop. The contact stated that it was discovered that an unknown liquid was leaking underneath the front of the vehicle with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that all the drive belts had fractured, and there was a fracture in the oil line and the radiator. The brakes had failed due to the calipers sticking and failed choppers and readers. The mechanic recommended that the radiator, electronic steering bushing, front calipers, pads, and readers be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V312000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

The left front brake caliper fell off and rubbed on the wheel’s rim. When I drove in reverse and hit the brakes the wheel would lock up and I couldn’t move. The dealer replaced the caliper. I had the brakes inspected by the local tire and brake specialists, Les Schwab. They wrote the inspection as the brakes locking bolt(the bolt that holds the caliper in place) was missing and the caliper was rubbing against the wheel. There wasn’t a warning. But, I did hear a loud clunk right before the brakes failed then the brakes made a rumbling sound as if I had a rock stuck in the brake pad. I asked the dealer to save the broken unit so I could document it but the service department manager for Korum Hyundai of Puyallup tried to pass off a different unit. I took pictures of both my unit (on the car) and the unit the manager was trying to pass off.

The active hydraulic booster(AHB) failed while I was driving. While driving 70 mph down the highway the car began to beep and immediately the breaks began to lock up and brake pedal went all the way to the floor. All I could hear was grinding and it was hard to stop. A car came close to hitting me because the deceleration was so abrupt. I towed it to hyundai dealership and they confirmed the issue is the AHB. After further research, I learn that this happens more often then expect on this vehicle and at first was very hard to diagnose.
When driving with foot on gas car starts to decrease in speed and pedal goes to floor but I lift foot off gas then put back on gas speed increases back to normal
Tail light on but brake lights not illuminating due to bulb melting on the bulb socket. Happened to a lot of vehicle owners online and now happening to me. But no recalls are posted. Was pulled over by police. I checked once I got home and saw that socket is burnt and melted.
The engine lost power while getting on the highway. I was able to let off the gas and then go again. This happened several times. I took the car to the dealer where I bought it new. I found out that there was a recall on the brake stopper. The dealership never mentioned this. They said the program was over and charged me $231 for a part that was recalled. While driving the car when slowing for a stop, or just closing down in traffic the car/engine at times will jerk and lurch while braking. If I am not a safe distance from a car in front of me I could cause and accident and hit a car, so I try to keep a good distance when in traffic and refuse to drive the car on long distances on the highway. I can't predict when it will happen and when it does the slippery when wet signal comes on even though it is not wet or slippery condiitons. I don't trust the car while driving, and have no faith in it's safety. I haven't scheduled an appointment for repair because the last time I did they kept the car for over 20 days due to what they said was a system, sensor failure and charges me $3100,when I got the car back I noticed liquid leaking from the car and then the above started happening. The car is available for inspection on request. Car has not been inspected yet, not sure if I can reproduce every time. But it happen almost every day I drive the car to work within 20 miles of my home. The dealership the last time would not give me a loaner car and I need the car to travel back and forth to work since I live in a place without access to public transportation.
I was driving and the brake light came on and I lost the brackes
I bought my car used from a private party in March of 2022 with around 132,000miles. In a year's time I have replaced the rear passenger side tail light bulbs 3 to 4 times, the whole light assembly, and the wiring harness twice due to the bulb getting to hot and the plastic caught on fire the first time and melting the second. Noticed the smoke when I pulled into a gas station that day and opened the trunk quickly and beat the small flame with a small blanket I had in the trunk. My kids sit in the back seat. So I'm constantly worrying while driving when they are in the back. The headlight bulbs go out quicker in this vehicle as well. I've had to replace the headlight bulbs 3 times already. This is also too close to the fuel pump for this sort of thing to happen in my opinion. This needs to be resolved A. S. A. P.

I have been having this problem with the car since May 2022. I was driving normally and the car gave the warning: Hybrid System stop and do not drive - check brakes, well I took the car to the mechanic near where I live zip code 90017 (Pep Boys) I have the note of the service that was done the first was on 11 June/22 and the brakes were changed since I thought this would be the problem and more fluid. The problem continued even with new brakes. I went there again and they check the brake system and they said everything looks fine on 20 June/22. So, I decided to scheduled an inspection at Hyundai in Van Nuys zip code 91404 (29 July/22) and I reported my problem that I was having with warnings check brake all the time while I’m driving every day, but I don't have another car and I need to go to work. Hyundai also couldn't solve the problem of warnings check brakes and I still having this problem, I get the free way every day to go to work and I'm scared because I never know when a warning will appear and the car practically stops in the middle of the free way ( it happened every day) which is making me feel very insecure with this car because it is dangerous but I’m tired of this car and this problem I can’t even go to super market without stop the car because of the warning check brakes.. While driving my 2013 Hyundai Sonata, I smelled fuel fumes coming through my a/c vents for several minutes. I shut the a/c off and rolled the windows down. White smoke began billowing out of my exhaust tail pipe then from under the hood. Being in the far left lane of a five lane freeway, other motorists and I were placed in danger as I had to travel across all lanes of traffic as my vehicle billowed thick white smoke into the air limiting the clear view of other motorists and increasing the chance of causing collisions. I pulled over to the shoulder of the freeway and then lost all power steering and brakes on my vehicle. I applied the emergency brake and brought my vehicle to a stop then turned it off. I looked at the temperature gauge and it read normal range but the check engine light came on along with several other dash lights. Once I turned the vehicle off, flames and billowing smoke began coming from under my hood. Four to five minutes later the fire extended to the cabin then the vehicle was fully engulfed. The fire department arrived and extinguished the vehicle fire. Prior to this drive, I have not smelled any fuel leaks or fuel odor inside or outside of the vehicle. It appears a fuel delivery component was the cause of the issue.

While driving car started beeping and making noises - check engine light, brake light, lcd displayed brake warning and flashed "hybrid system warning! safely stop and do not drive". Brake pedal then went to floor, and engine power reduced. Re-starting the car only cleared the problem for a minute before the warning message re-occurs. ON AUGUST THE 15TH MY CAR WAS GOING DOWN SHARPE RD IN BURLINGTON NC AT ABOUT 25-30 MPH GOING TOWARDS ROSS ST. I TRIED TO STOP ON MY BRAKES AND MY CAR WOULD NOT STOP.. AS I TRIED STOP IT I FELT MY BRAKE PEDDLE GO ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I WAS ABLE TO PULL MY CAR OFF THE ROAD AND SIT UNTIL I HAD A TOW TRUCK COME TOW IT HOME. I HAVE MY CAR AT CHRENSHAW HYUNDIA. I HAVE ALSO BEEN TRYING TO GET MY CAR SERVISED THROUGH THEM AND THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN BOOKED U. THAT CAUSES A LOT OF CAR issues when you have to wait on an appointment. I really need my car fixed and I do not have the kind if funds that they are asking.

My safety was put at risk and the life of others as a chime sound began to sound and the "check brake/Hybrid System Warning" was displayed on the dashboard. This caused the car to press the emergency breaks on its own slowing the vehicle to a complete halt on freeway. This malfunction could have caused a multi vehicle collision. This was taken for inspection and Scanned with GDS and C1235 Pressure sensor, is internal in HECU and cannot be repaired, HECU must be replaced. The vehicle is unsafe to drive and pedal sinks which feels like car does not stop. The output signal voltage of the pressure sensor is out of the specified range, the monitoring starts 1 sec after power up. The cause of this could be that there is a faulty pressured sensor and/or open or short of pressure sensor circuit. The pressure sensor installed in the HECU, converts the brake pressure to judge the drivers brake intention when the ESC program is operated. When pressure is applied to the sensor, the resistance of the sensor's strain gauge changes. The change in resistance changes the voltage output from the sensor. A fail safe inhibits the ESC/DBC control and allow the ABS/EDB control. The ESC/DBC warning lamp is activated. A safety recall should be established by this establishment as other Hyundai Sonata Hybrids are having the same malfunctions and are having to repair costs out of their own pockets, $4,300 given quote.

hybrid brake warning bells went off and lost brakes. had vehicle taken to dealership and they cant duplicate problem. very scared to drive vehicle. Don't want to be a statistic on the road.
My ABS light is continually on and smells like my brakes are burning. And my traction control light is on at all times also. No inspection. available for inspection upon request.
*** Normal driving, brakes went out while driving. *** Car was recently repaired by dealer related to hybrid power relay system failure - fuse and precharge relay failed and forced car to pull over while at highway speeds to side of road then left driver stranded on side of road. This was repaired supposedly. Now just a couple weeks later under normal street driving condition brakes totally went out. Stop light then let off brake and car started beeping and making noises - check engine light, brake light, LCD displayed BRAKE warning and flashed "HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING! Safely Stop and Do Not Drive". The car was unresponsive to acceleration pedal and only slowly moved then puttered a little bit but I managed to get it out of the intersection and into a parking lot under its own power. Brake pedal went all the way to the floor. I used Emergency Brake to stop and park then had it towed. Could have been disaster if I was on highway - which I was at stop light to turn onto when the failure occurred. I am scared of this car now. 2 times in a month it has forced driver to pull over and then become unresponsive. No brakes is the last straw. This is a dangerous car now.
my brakes stop working . The dealership advised that the HECU needed to be replaced. There are several incidents showing online with the same dangerous problem. at home going into my apartment garage the car just started rolling back onto on coming traffic. the brakes just stopped working, I swerved to avoid being hit. The brake pedal bushing has completely deteriorated and caused my car to be able to shift gears without touching the brake. It also caused me to be unable to use cruise control (which I found out driving down the interstate thank god I wasn’t in an accident) and caused me to be unable to park my car. Caused my battery to die and left me stranded at work. No pieces to remedy to issue are available. And Hyundai has said there was a recall with earlier models (up to year 2011) my car is 2013 and is obviously effected. I have now had a recall on y seat belts, air bags, engine, seat belt anchors, fuel line transmission fluid sensor and now my brakes. I’m not sure what is actually ok with this model at this point!!!

IT SEEMS THIS HAS TO DO WITH EITHER THE RUBBER STOPPER OF THE BRAKE SWITCH OR THE FAILURE OF THE BRAKE SWITCH OR BOTH. I CALLED HYUNDAI AND WAS INFORMED THAT NO RECALLS HAVE BEEN ISSUED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM BUT THE WARRANTY ON THE STOPPER HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO 15 YEARS AND UNLIMITED MILES. THEY SHOULD EXTEND THIS WARRANTY NOT JUST TO THE STOPPER BUT TO THE WHOLE SWITCH ASSEMBLY. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT HYUNDAI HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE SWITCH ASSEMBLY BUT IS NOT INFORMING THE OWNERS OF THE POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD CAUSED BY THE FAILURE OF THIS ASSEMBLY. THE VEHICLE FINALLY STOPPED, I TURNED IT OFF, CHECKED THE BRAKES FOR LEAKS. I ALSO CHECKED THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL. EVERYTHING LOOKED NORMAL WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR, NOT ALARM. EVERYTHING CLEARED UP. ONCE I ARRIVED AT THE DEALERSHIP I INFORMED THEM THAT DURING MY ROUTE HERE ANOTHER LIGHT CAME ON WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING . HE INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS A BAD ABS SPEED SENSOR AND THAT THE COST OF THE REPAIR WOULD AMOUNT TO ROUGHLY $600 R. TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH WAS REPLACED. AGAIN A FEW WEEKS LATER THE PROBLEM WAS BACK. DEALERSHIP COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. AFTER WEEKS OF BACK AND FORTH WITH HYUNDAI, THEY FINALLY SENT AN ENGINEER. NOW THEY'RE SAYING THE CASING FOR THE TAIL LIGHTS NEED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS HAVE BURNED THE WIRING AND MELTED THE CASING. ALL DURING THIS TIME, MY CAR WILL START (PUSH BUTTON) WITHOUT HAVING MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. ABS SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS KICKING IN, BUT NO ILLUMINATION, AND THANKFULLY STOPPED IN TIME BEFORE HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THAT FOLLOWING WEEKEND, SAME THING HAPPENED PULLING OFF OF MY STREET, AND I COULDN'T STOP AT THE STOP SIGN, AND INSTEAD, SKIDDED DOWN THE HILL AND STOPPED ABOUT 2 FEET PASSED THE STOP SIGN. WHEN READING ON WHAT WAS GOING ON THAT NIGHT, I FOUND THAT THE 2015 HYUNDAI SONATA MODEL HAD A RECALL FOR ABS MALFUNCTIONS DURING MAY 28TH 2014 TO AUGUST 21ST, 2015 WHERE HYUNDAI RECALLED OVER 65,000 VEHICLES FOR THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE FOLLOWING: " IN THE EVENT OF AN ABS MALFUNCTION, THE BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE, BUT THE ABS WARNING LIGHT WILL NOT ILLUMINATE. HEARD SEVERE GRINDING NOISE ON BRAKES AGAIN, TOOK TO DEALER, AGAIN HAD DEALER REP LISTEN TO NOISE. DEALER INSPECTED THE BRAKES, AND STATED THERE WAS SEVERE WEAR ON THE INSIDE BRAKE PADS, THAT HAD DAMAGED THE ROTORS TO THE POINT THEY HAD TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS NO WARNING THAT THE BRAKE PADS WERE WORN PREMATURELY, AND THE DEALER FAILED TO IDENTIFY THE ISSUE WITH BRAKING SYSTEM UNTIL IT WAS TOO LATE, CREATING A SAFETY HAZARD. THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM FROM THE BEGINNING, AND WE DOCUMENTED IT AT THE DEALER, WHERE WE HAD ALL SERVICE DONE.

SERVICE MANAGER DROVE VEHICLE, ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM, AND INDICATED THAT RUST HAD ACCUMULATED ON ROTORS. HE SAID HIGH/LOW SPOTS DUE TO RUST CAN RESULT IN LOSS OF BRAKE PRESSURE, AND LOUD NOISE WAS A RESULT OF BRAKE PADS RUBBING ON UNEVEN SURFACES. AFTER DEALER TECHNICIAN DROVE SEVERAL MILES AND APPLIED BRAKES, RUST WORE OFF AND BRAKE FUNCTION RETURNED. THE DEALER SERVICE MANAGER SAID THE CAR SHOULD BE DRIVEN EVERY COUPLE DAYS OR AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING. HE INDICATED HE COULD TURN THE ROTORS BUT THE RUST WOULD JUST RETURN. I HAVE NEVER OWNED A VEHICLE IN 30 YEARS WHERE THE ROTORS ARE SO PRONE TO RUST RESULTING IN BRAKE FAILURE IF NOT DRIVEN FOR 4 WEEKS, MUCH LESS A WEEK. THANKFULLY THIS WAS NOT NOTICED AT HIGHER SPEED ON A ROAD OR THIS WAS AN ACCIDENT IN THE MAKING. I BELIEVE THERE COULD BE A ROTOR MATERIAL DESIGN OR QUALITY ISSUE THAT IS PROMOTING CORROSION AT SUCH A RAPID RATE. DEALER'S INVOICE IS ATTACHED FOR REFERENCE.

ALONG WITH THIS THE LIGHT BULBS HAD FUSED THEMSELVES INTO THEIR SOCKETS. I HAD TO BREAK THE BULBS TO GET THE COMPLETE BULB UNIT OUT OF THE SOCKET. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE NEW BULBS INTO THE SOCKET RELATIVELY EASY. HOWEVER, WHEN I TRIED TO PUT THEM BACK INTO THE BRAKE HOUSING I HAD TO FORCE THEM BACK IN. THIS HAPPENED ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CAR. MY CONCERN IS THE HOUSING COULD MELT MORE AND IGNITE ON FIRE. I DO NOT HAVE PICTURES OF IT BUT I DO HAVE VIDEO OF THE ISSUE. I FOUND THIS OUT WHEN TRYING TO CHANGE THE BULDS IN A PARKING LOT CLOSE TO A LOCAL AUTOMOTIVE PARTS COMPANY WHERE I WORK.

I HAVE OWNED THE CAR SINCE NOVEMBER OF 2012. BEGINNING IN Q1 OF 2014, I BEGAN TO NOTICE THE BRAKE PEDAL FEELING SPONGY IN THE CAR. OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS, THE PEDAL BECAME EVEN MORE SPONGY, WHERE THE BRAKES WOULD NOT ENGAGE SUFFICIENTLY TO SLOW THE VEHICLE UNTIL THE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED PAST MORE THAN 2/3'S OF ITS FULL TRAVEL. TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALER FOR SERVICE ON 6/4/2014 WITH 19,627 MILES AS VEHICLE IS UNDER WARRANTY AND NO ONE ELSE WANTS TO WORK ON IT AS IT WOULD VOID MY WARRANTY. I DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER COMPLETED THEIR TESTS AND STATED THAT BRAKES WERE OPERATING NORMALLY. I THEN TOOK THE MECHANIC FOR A DRIVE TO SHOW THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO ALMOST THE FLOOR AND AGAIN TOLD THIS WAS NORMAL BY THE DEALER MECHANIC. APPROXIMATELY A MONTH LATER, AFTER LEAVING THE CAR PARKED FOR A WEEK AT THE AIRPORT WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ENGAGED, THE REAR DRIVER WHEEL BEGAN THUMPING AND VIBRATING IMMEDIATELY UPON DRIVING OUT OF THE PARKING SPACE. I STOPPED THE CAR AND EXAMINED THE TIRE. NO PROBLEMS WITH THE TIRE WERE DETECTED SO I DROVE HOME. THE NOISE DECREASED DURING THE DRIVE BUT DID NOT GO AWAY. THE CAR WAS THEN TAKEN TO A TIRE SHOP WHERE TIRES WERE SWAPPED AND PROBLEM REMAINED WITH THE SAME LEFT REAR BRAKE. ANOTHER APPOINTMENT IS SCHEDULED WITH HYUNDAI DEALER TO RE-EXAMINE BRAKE SYSTEM. THE PROBLEM WITH THE SPONGY PEDAL HAS INCREASED AND NOW THE BRAKE PEDAL CAN BE DEPRESSED TO THE FLOOR WITHOUT MUCH EFFORT. ADDITIONALLY, THE LEFT REAR BRAKE CONTINUES TO MAKE NOISE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. ON MONDAY SEPTEMBER 22ND AROUND 540PM ON THE 10 FWY GOING EASTBOUND RIGHT BEFORE TOWNE AVE. AS THE TRAFFIC ON THE FREEWAY BEGAN TO SLOW I CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. HOWEVER THEY DID FIX THE RECALL ON MY CAR FOR THE ROLLAWAY RISK AND SHIFT CABLE TO THE TRANSMISSION. I ASKED THEM DO YOU THINK THIS HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT. THE DEALER INDICATED NO THAT MAYBE I WAS DRIVING FAST AND THE ABS TOOK OVER. I TOLD HIM THAT I HAD MORE THAN 8 FEET BETWEEN THE BIG RIG AND MYSELF WHEN I CAME TO A FULL STOP AND THAT I WAS NOT GOING MORE THAN 15-20 MILES SINCE TRAFFIC WAS SLOW. I WAS IN LINE AT A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT AND AS I APPROACHED THE DELIVERY WINDOW, I BRAKE THE CAR TO 3 MPH, PREPARING TO STOP BEHIND THE CAR IN FRONT. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE, BUT I FELT THE BRAKE SUDDENLY GIVING WAY, HAVING A SPONGY FEEL AS IT WAS BECOMING INOPERABLE. THE CAR SURGED FORWARD AND HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN REPORTED TO HYUNDAI- REGIONAL CASE #6004610 AND CASE #6342874. AFTER FILING THERE'S NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE BESIDES FILE THE REPORT WITH THE REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE. I'VE BEEN FORTUNATE THAT NO ONE HAS BEEN INJURED SO FAR. MY FAMILY MEMBERS WILL NOT RIDE IN THE CAR WITH ME. THE CAR CURRENTLY HAS 5,700 MILES ON IT. WE TRIED TO COME TO A STOP BEHIND THE VEHICLE TO CALL THE POLICE AND DEAL WITH THE INCIDENT, BUT THE BRAKES STILL WOULD NOT WORK. WE HAD TO SWERVE BACK TO THE LEFT LANE TO AVOID HITTING THE VEHICLE AGAIN, AND FINALLY CAME TO A ROLLING STOP SEVERAL YARDS IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER DEALING WITH THE POLICE, WE TESTED THE BRAKES MULTIPLE TIMES AND THEY WERE ENGAGING, SO WE CONTINUED ON TO MY AUNT'S HOUSE. THE NEXT DAY WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP AS WE WERE TOO AFRAID TO DRIVE IT AGAIN, WHERE THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM.
