The engine failed in my 2014 Hyundai Sonata for the 2nd time while driving in evening traffic on a major interstate with my elderly father in the car with me. The engine completely shut down while in mid drive on the interstate with no power. The engine and oil lamp indicators immediately came on right before the engine lost power on the interstate. This caused my safety and the safety of my father to be put at risk by not being able to have any power while in the lane of evening traffic. My vehicle was towed to the nearby Hyundai dealership, Modern Hyundai of Concord, where their service department conducted inspection of the engine issue and where it was kept for 4 months with no repairs made per the orders of Hyundai Motor America. Hyundai Motor America refused to honor their own warranty to replace the engine (engine in need of replacement for the 2nd time).
The vehicle experienced a sudden engine failure and loss of power while traveling at freeway speed. Two days earlier, the vehicle had been taken to an authorized dealership for factory recall service. During that visit, concerns were raised about known engine issues associated with this model, but the vehicle was returned to service. While driving on the freeway, the engine abruptly stalled without warning, causing immediate loss of propulsion and power. This created a dangerous situation in moving traffic, requiring rapid maneuvering to avoid a collision and safely exit traffic lanes. The vehicle became inoperable and could not be restarted. The failed component appears to be the engine or related internal engine system. The vehicle was towed back to the dealership following the incident and has remained inoperable since that time. The vehicle is currently available for inspection. The failure placed the driver at significant risk due to the sudden loss of power at highway speed. No collision occurred, but the risk of serious injury or death was present. The problem has not been reproduced because the vehicle has remained disabled since the incident. The dealership and manufacturer have inspected the vehicle after the failure. The manufacturer is reviewing the incident under an internal process. There were no prior warning lights, messages, or symptoms indicating imminent engine failure before the stall. The failure occurred suddenly and without advance notice.
My 2014 Hyundai Sonata experienced a P1326 engine fault code, which activates the knock sensor system due to engine bearing wear. This condition is directly related to Hyundai’s safety recall 17V226 (Theta II engine). The Hyundai dealership submitted my case to Hyundai corporate, and Hyundai denied the repair solely because my vehicle has over 150,000 miles. A manufacturer cannot refuse a federal recall repair due to mileage, and Hyundai’s engine recall has no mileage or time limit. The denial places me in an unsafe situation, as the recall defect can cause engine seizure or stalling while driving. I am requesting NHTSA intervention.
This motor had a recall. Campaign t3g- sonata yfa 2.4L Theta II. 1 month after an oil change at the mechanic the car started making noises. Took it right to the mechanic who said there was no oil and that there was a recall on this motor for this reason. Immediately took it to the Hyundai dealership located in centereach NY. The employee who helped us was not a help. Took days and days to even get the paperwork In for the recall. Did not communicate with us unless we called him. Then eventually just said it was denied. Took weeks to get the proof from them. Completely frustrating. We submitted all proof of oil changes and maintenance and it was denied saying engine neglect! We are struggling to keep up with bills and now cannot get to work because of this. We have 2 toddlers and he is a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Centereach. He works full time at Stony Brook Hospital and is in school full time with rotations in the hospital for paramedic class. This is insane to be treated this way
CAR MAKING LOUD NOISE UNDER THE CAR HOOD LIKE SOMETHING FALLING APART UNDER THE HOOD, A MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE ENGINE , I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS CAR ENGINE. HYUNDAI DID MY 90,000 MILE INSPECTION ON JULY 19, 2025, AT THE TIME THE WORK WAS DONE I ONLY HAD 87238.
Hello, I brought my 2014 Hyundai Sonata (approx. 73,000 miles) to an authorized Hyundai dealership (MotorWorld Hyundai, Wilkes-Barre, PA) on August 4, 2025, for Recall 162 (NHTSA 17V-226) due to audible engine knocking. I reported the noise when dropping off the vehicle. The dealer claimed the engine passed the inspection but did not provide any documentation confirming that the required bearing test was performed. They said the issue might be from the top of the engine (possibly the timing chain) and wanted to charge $800 to disassemble the engine, with a repair estimate of $2,900. The reason they wanted to disassemble the engine is because after an initial diagnosis for $160 they discovered the noise is not from the timing chain. Besides, it would be extremely unusual for the issue to be a timing chain at 73k. I later learned from Hyundai Customer Care that the recall still shows as “Incomplete” in their system, meaning the inspection was never properly submitted. I'm conerned that the recall was not properly performed or submitted (why does it still show "incomplete" if they insepcted it and it passed?) and that the symptoms may still indicate the exact defect covered under Recall 162 (rod bearing knock), I believe I was denied proper remedy (in a less polite way - I think they flat out lied to me about the real issue) and I was pressured toward expensive non-recall repairs without conclusive diagnosis. My understanding is that getting a diagnosis for a timing chain shouldn't cost anywhere near $800. I am requesting NHTSA review this situation to ensure Hyundai fulfills its federally mandated recall obligation. My engine has a knock and the dealership told me that they would not fix it due to "lack of maintanence" but I tried explaining to them that I was unable to get proof because Oreily and auto zone were unable to get me receipts on old purchases.
Engine Failure. After taking my Hyundai listed above in for repairs to the air conditioning not working properly and while in custody of Jeff's Automotive Service, here in Sterling, IL 61081, the engine suddenly died out while they were test driving the car. They were able to jump start it once, and then it died out again while driving it. This time the car could not be restarted by all means possible. Being in the shop, other possible causes were checked and not one of them worked. The Engine is completely DEAD. After Checking for possible causes online it was found that a recall for the very same Engine Failure had been done back in 2017/2018.\n" + 'For unknown reasons, I was never notified nor did I ever received such notice. Now at this time, we have contacted a local dealer and they state that because the auto had not been taken in for the recall repairs, it no longer "qualifies" for free repairs and any repairs would have to be paid for. Upon checking the NHTSA website, it states that there are no time limits on the repairs. I was going to contact National Hyundai Corp to inquire about it, but decided instead to file a complaint with you. 'The question is: Is my car still eligible for the Recall Repairs under the Hyndai Mfg Recall #162 'of March 31, 2017? Recall Number 17V2260000??? Given the fact that i did not receive their notification if indeed, one was sent, and I was totally unaware of this Recall???. I sincerely\n' + 'believe that under the laws and procedures, I should still be eligible for this Recall Repair of\n' + 'their Faulty Engine Failure in my automobile listed above. \n' + 'Therefore I am at this time requesting an investigation and a decision before I make any attempts to contact Hyundai Mfg directly. Also as part of my inquiries I spoke to the Service Department of Schimmer Hyundai in Peru, IL the closest dealer to me, and after checking the VIN number I was to
The vehicle experienced engine stalling and rough running. We discovered it had an open engine recall related to known defects in the Theta II engine. We dropped the vehicle off at a Hyundai dealership (Hyundai Napleton) on July 1st, 2025 for recall repair, following instructions from ACV Auctions. After holding the vehicle for over three weeks, Hyundai Napleton informed us they could not perform the recall due to their internal policy against working on dealer-owned vehicles. This directly contradicts the purpose of a federally mandated safety recall, which is supposed to apply regardless of ownership. On July 23, 2025, we received a call from Hyundai Motor America, stating they would not approve the recall repair because the vehicle had been declared a total loss. This is entirely false—the vehicle has never been declared a total loss by any insurance company or official source. It appears Hyundai Motor America and the dealership are passing responsibility back and forth, providing conflicting and inaccurate information, while the vehicle sits unrepaired and inoperable. This behavior delays a federally mandated repair, puts consumers at risk, and reflects serious breakdowns in how Hyundai handles recall compliance. We need NHTSA’s help to investigate and enforce the proper handling of this safety recall. My engine seized and I lost power. This is the second engine this has happened to. I was given a extended warranty, but Hyundai is refusing to pay for a new engine. The mechanic advised me they are replacing engines three times a week. Mine was denied even though my engine only has 76,000 miles and my warranty is still good. This engine problem should be a new recall since the same problem is still occurring. The engine light did come on blinking. When I took it to the dealer. They knew the problem before looking at my engine since so many others need to have thiers replaced. The dealership confirmed i need a new engine. They made me send in my oil changes. They were upset I didn't have any oil receipts for my previous engine even thought it was replaced at a Hyundai dealership the first time. Consumers should not have to replace two engines. This is a safety concern with it losing power so quickly.
Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to file a formal safety complaint regarding a dangerous incident involving my Hyundai Sonata Hybrid (VIN: [XXX] ) and Hyundai Motor America’s failure to fully correct the issue. Incident Summary: While driving on the freeway, the vehicle suddenly displayed the following alarming warnings: “Hybrid System Warning! Safely Stop and Do Not Drive” “Check Charging System” Immediately after these messages appeared, the car lost all power and shut down in the middle of the road. I had my two young children (ages XXX and XXX) in the car, making the situation extremely unsafe and traumatic. The vehicle lost all mobility and provided no opportunity to safely pull over. After contacting Hyundai Corporate multiple times, a case manager was eventually assigned to my case. At Hyundai’s request, I towed the vehicle to AutoNation Hyundai Valencia for diagnostic evaluation. The dealership diagnosed the issue as error code P0A78, indicating a transmission failure. Hyundai Corporate offered to cover 60% of the repair cost, leaving me responsible for the remaining 40%—an amount that exceeds the current value of the vehicle. This proposed resolution is not reasonable considering the severity of the safety risk and the vehicle’s low mileage. My primary concern is that this is an extremely dangerous defect, as the vehicle loses all power without warning, leaving the driver unable to move the car to a safe location. Requested Actions: A formal investigation into the safety and reliability of Hyundai’s hybrid systems, specifically in 2014 Sonata Hybrid vehicles. A determination of whether this defect qualifies under Hyundai’s warranty or federal safety defect regulations. Full compensation from Hyundai Corporate to cover 100% of the repair costs to correct this serious safety issue. Thank you for your time and attention to this critical matter. I look forward to your prompt response and appropriate action. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5
Engine light is blinking and put safety of my family in danger. I called the close Huyndai dealer also I have a case number. However, it takes forever for them to answer. I only have this car. I am driver and this how I make living. I have no choice in driving this recall vehicle and kill my self and my family. No body care!
When I was trying to accelerate, my gas pedal just wasn't responding at all and the engine, oil, and battery light all came on. When that happened my car shut down and I coasted to a stop.
While driving my 2014 Hyundai Sonata on [XXX], the engine suddenly stalled without warning. I was in motion on a public road when the vehicle lost power, forcing me to safely pull over. There were no warning lights, check engine lights, or prior signs of engine trouble before the failure occurred. I had the vehicle towed to a certified Hyundai dealership (Norm Reeves Hyundai Superstore in Cerritos), where I was told the engine failed due to rod bearing failure caused by oil starvation. The dealership stated that the engine needed to be replaced. However, I have maintained the vehicle regularly, with consistent oil changes and maintenance, and I have documentation to prove this. Despite this, Hyundai has refused assistance and claims "exceptional maintenance neglect" without showing inspection photos or detailed evidence. This engine failure fits the exact pattern of a known engine defect already under recall for similar Hyundai models and engines, including issues with oil passages and rod bearings that lead to sudden engine failure. These vehicles have been involved in class-action lawsuits and recall campaigns for this reason. This sudden failure put my safety and that of others at risk, as the engine lost power in traffic without any prior warning. I am requesting NHTSA investigate whether this issue is part of the broader defect already under recall, and whether Hyundai is avoiding responsibility by misclassifying valid cases. While driving on the highway, the engine of my 2014 Hyundai Sonata suddenly seized without any prior warning. There were no preceding symptoms such as warning lights, unusual noises, or performance issues that might have indicated an impending failure. At the time of the engine seizure, I also lost power steering and power brakes, which severely compromised my ability to control the vehicle and led to a dangerous situation in fast-moving traffic. I later discovered that vehicles equipped with the Theta II engine have experienced similar issues, suggesting a potential safety-related defect. I am reporting this incident as a serious safety concern and request that NHTSA investigate this matter further.
Car transmission replaced with only 38,000 miles. Car shutters, skip gears, loss of power. Very dangerous especially when pulling out from side road on to main road. Transmission problem starts out as intermittent at first, so you never know when it will happen next. Lots of near misses where I would have been rear ended, due to shifting problems. New Transmission is already starting to shift erratically at times with only 2,000 miles on new rebuilt trans. Cost of repair is 5 to 6,000. Also own 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid with the same exact transmission problems. Transmission replaced at 67,000 and now at repair shop for replacement Trans at 124,000 miles. Vin [XXX] . Both of these cars are dangerous to drive. These problems start out intermittently, and if the dealership cannot duplicate the problem, they will not fix anything, hoping to string you along past the warranty period. I tell them to check the fault code history and they tell me that they did not find any error codes. Both these cars also have the defective engine too- but so far my engines are working correctly. Invoices can be provided if needed. Found research shows that there are transmission problems with almost all generations of the Sonata's especially my 2 years - 2012 and 2014. Misfiring cylinder
Just purchased the sedan and took it to a shop to get checked Reason for the doing was because vehicle felt a lil rough after getting the vehicle checked they came to the conclusion that the motor had seized
Due to a recall Hyundai promised a lifetime extended warranty on the engine of my 2014 Hyundai Sonata concerning a defect in the engine manufacturing. We're as metal shavings can cause rod bearings to wear out causing what is known as engine knocking noise. Well my engine is knocking, and I was told by a license certified mechanic that it's my rod bearings & that the engine is fixing to throw a rod. This is covered under the extended lifetime warranty. When I called Hyundai they said we aren't going to fix the issue because the vehicle has a salvaged title. I had a consumer rear ended me years ago, there insurance company totaled out my car which was not totaled. Only minor rear damage. I ended up keeping the car and it drove fine, no engine damage due to the wreck on rear end damage. This shouldn't stop my rights to a new engine which Hyundai promised during a lifetime extension of the engine. This is considered unfair Deceptive Trade Practice Act violation.

While driving down the road the car died. Now it will not start.
I got a 2014 Hyundai Sonata in May of 2023. In the beginning of September 2024, I was driving down the road on a highway and a knocking sound began as well as grinding. The car then immediately lost all power which could’ve resulted in a serious accident like death or injury to me or others. I found out about the engine recall right after for the class action lawsuit for Hyundai. They told me I was good under the extended warranty. I was told that I needed to get the odometer branding fixed on the title before they would honor the recall. I did that and received the clean title in the beginning of November. The car was at a garage where they agreed that the car had premature worn engine bearings and had failed. The car went to a dealership in the beginning of November. Then I was told I needed more information like the clean title, bill of sale, and a statement. I provided all 3. After that I was told I needed to send receipts of my maintenance to the car. I also did that. I send every several documents. The dealership had told me my claim was denied due to “maintenance neglect” and “not enough maintenance documentation.” I then had the dealership reopen the claim and sent all of the prior maintenance records on the vehicle from the owner before me. I am told it is declined still for the same reason which makes no sense. I sent 35 documents to them. I was told today that they will not fix it and I was wished the best of luck. I did not have the car at the time of the recall and only had it for a year and a couple months. The car has been sitting for 4 months while I am paying insurance on it at the dealership to get the engine recall repaired.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact stated that the sound was persistent. The vehicle was driven to a local restaurant parking lot. The contact stated that the vehicle had stalled several times. The contact was afraid to drive the vehicle because of the failure. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The dealer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to have the vehicle towed to the dealer. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer; however, the failure was not duplicated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The contact stated that in November 2024, the vehicle was taken to the dealer and several unknown recall repairs were performed. The contact stated that the failure began shortly after the recall repairs were performed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 158,000.

There was no warning, engine seized on main Hwy at night driving approximately 45mph. Couldn’t even pull off to the side. My child and I were stuck on a main road with no warning anything was wrong. Car stopped driving completely. This was my forth engine. Hyundai has always replaced it. 4 in 27k miles. This time they denied it.
To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to express my concern regarding my 2014 Hyundai Sonata, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN): [XXX] , which is currently experiencing excessive oil consumption. I have recently become aware of Recall Campaign 162, which addresses a manufacturing defect that can lead to premature engine wear and related issues. Despite regular maintenance and proper care, my vehicle consumes an abnormal amount of oil, causing me to frequently top off the oil between oil changes. This not only increases my maintenance costs but also raises serious concerns about the safety and reliability of my vehicle. **A trusted service provider has confirmed that the oil consumption in my vehicle is abnormal and is likely related to the defects outlined in Recall Campaign 162.** As stated in the recall, the machining errors during the engine manufacturing process can restrict oil flow to the bearings, leading to premature bearing wear. Although my vehicle does not currently exhibit any visible oil leaks, the oil consumption issue suggests underlying damage that could potentially lead to engine failure. Considering the potential risks and the known issues with the Theta II engine, I kindly request that my vehicle be inspected and, if necessary, repaired under the terms of Recall Campaign 162. I urge you to address this matter promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of my vehicle. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I was driving the car to take to emissions because the car was recently purchased and as I was driving the car turned off and doesn’t turn back on.
The vehicle suddenly spiked in RPMs, and suffered from a rattling noise. The following day after taking it to a known skilled service location, they advised to contact the dealership due to two open recalls. They found zero oil in the vehicle as well as issues with the valve seals. They then put the blame on the customer and did not acknowledge the engine recall that states clear problems with oil and engine valves resulting in a loss of oil and a failure in monitoring systems. At no time did the oil light show on the dash and there was no oil in the driveway where the vehicle has been parked. They advised us to contact the company for assistance. After doing so, the dealership, and Hyundai themselves have refused to acknowledge the engine issues or repair the car under the two known open recalls. We have spoke with reps from both the dealership and the company an have received no assistance in reclaiming confidence in the vehicle or Hyundai as a whole. This happened in September 2024 and there is no resolution in sight here in December. How a customer can be expected to repair at their own cost during a known recall with a class action lawsuit is ludicrous.
Oct 24th, 2024 on highway had accelerated to 75, all of a sudden, car experienced mechanical shutdown, engine light came on would go fast slow down, felt like braking down, engine light was solid, had to get very slowly somehow into the brake down lane. Turned the car off, waited long time...got advice to try to power car back on because was night and was dangerous lane. Car started, drove very slowly home with hazard lights on. Next incident (that I was on hgwy) Nov 24th, 2024 went from 65 to work up to 80MPh, the car lights went on for engine, slowing down,no control of the speed, no accelerating, lights, made to pull over...turn car off...waiting 15 minutes, drove in break down lane, was only 7-8 minutes from my house off highway.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 MPH, the vehicle suddenly lost power and the contact was able to coast to the side of the road. The instrument panel was illuminated with several unknown warning lights. The contact restarted the vehicle and continued driving. Three months later, on November 11th, 2024, while driving approximately 40 - 45 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated with a message indicating a failure with the Variable Valve Timing Solenoid. An independent mechanic confirmed that the Variable Valve Timing Solenoid was the cause of the failure, and the contact replaced the part himself. The following day after being idle at a stop light, the contact attempted to accelerate, and the vehicle failed to accelerate. The vehicle was restarted; however, there was a knocking sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact had the vehicle towed to the residence. The contact used an OBD machine to diagnose the vehicle and retrieved fault codes for an oil pressure failure which caused the engine failure. The vehicle had not been taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,326.

I was driving at a higher rate of speed 50 MPH in the center of 3 laned road no warning or indicator lights were on in my vehicle when the engine without warning blew and stopped working. Again no check engine lights were on no warnings were given. It shut down and would no longer accelerate or drive. We almost caused several accidents as this was a very busy roadway.
Extremely rough idle when stopped. Trying to accelerate to merge into traffic the my. Car had no power and I almost got creamed ! I had to pull over so other cars could go around me. Several other issues with car like oil every month or so. I had gas pouring from a hose on my engine and when I brought it to dealership they wanted 1100.00 knowing it was a recall. I hope the dealership and Hyundai rot. !
Stopped at a stop light, started going again, got up to about 20 mph and engine stalled on the side of the road. Had to wait HOURS for a tow, triple A couldn’t help, had to pay $70 out of pocket. Now they are denying me for an engine replacement, each time I submit the documentation they request, they find some reason to turn it down, and when I ask what they specifically needed me to do, they just gave me a phone number to call for Hyundai customer affairs, even though I have already gone through all of this with them, and they directed me back to the dealership as far as communication goes. I’m getting the run around, and it has been going on since May.
Car stalled at 65 mph and went in to limp mode. Knocking noise came from under right side of engine. Car is not drivable at this time. Sounds like a rod thrown and there are metal shaving in oil.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was not able to be restarted and the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle remained at the independent mechanic and was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Engine stopped running while driving. Taken to Hyundai for theta ii settlement. Claim denied due to exception negligence. Discoloration found on cam. Car burned 1 quart of oil every week or two which confirmed with independent mechanic can cause discoloration. Claim denied without cause.
Hyundai Motors fails to sympathize with their customers. I bought a Hyundai Sonata 2014 which caught a fire on October 9th 2019. Hyundai finally conversated me for the car in how much it was worth $4,150.60 on March 20th 2024 and not for punitive damages. I feel they are very unfair and I need my punitive damages I lost a lot not only a car but my job as well. My livelihood and transportation on top of that. And I need help to recover my punitive damages.
On Feb 15th 2023 my daughter was driving my 2014 Hyundai Sonata at the posted speed limit of 55 MPH on a 2 lane blacktop when the car suddenly and without any warning at all, lost all power and became unresponsive while traveling with other vehicles behind her, in front of her and in the opposing lane of travel. Without enough of an improved shoulder to pull to the right and a steep embankment on that side of the roadway as well, she was forced to veer to the left with other cars approaching. She had minimal braking, steering and no response to depressing the accelerator pedal at all. She was able to direct the car onto a paved portion of a feeder road and finally got the car stopped. The cabin filled with smoke and there was smoke all around the car but no fire was ever found. These vehicles are dangerous to the public and have a known engine defect that because of this the manufacturer has implemented a software patch known as KSDS and with this recall in place should have allowed my daughter to reach a safer place than being stranding on the side of a busy hi-way. My car had this patch installed and I was assured that this recall would allow the car to be driven a safe distance and it would be obvious when this patch was active and the engine would be put in "Limp mode" This did not happen, the engine locked up
This is the 3rd time in 2 years my car shuts down while driving. The dash panel started flashing "WARNING CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM. DO NOT DRIVE" and an alert starts beeping and the car shuts off. THERE WAS NO OTHER PRIOR WARNING LEADING UP TO THIS. Why isn't there any warning BEFORE it gets to this? This is an accident waiting to happen. Do you know how many accidents would happen if every car just shut off like that because of some faulty charging system. Any other car would have warned you before hand. It's by the grace of God I was not slammed into while crossing a busy street and this damn car shut off leaving me right in harms way with cross traffic. AND another time it shut off on a busy highway. COMPLETELY DEAD. No functioning hazards. It's not right. This last time, The dealership told me there is a recall on the car for the safety plug and that was replaced. I was also told I needed a new battery and new power relay assembly. Those parts are related to the safety plug and the operation of the charging system. Why are those parts not also part of the recall? The dealership charges a diagnostic fee when they already know what the issue is. Must be nice. Everyone involved is building their own karma. I'm very displeased with this Brand. I will never buy another one and I will tell everyone I know hyundai does not stand by their product in making sure it's safe and operational. And they leave the consumer stuck with a bill that was their fault. FYI I had a prior complaint case with consumer affairs. (The mileage I stated was when it first happened. Now it's at 90k)
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while at an intersection, the vehicle stalled. There was smoke coming from the engine compartment. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated after the failure. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot, and the contact was informed that the failure was because the engine had seized. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 89,814.

This car burns oil at the rate of a quart every 300 miles.I have had it at the dealer several times and Hyundai has been no help at all. Their final recommendation was to replace the engine and I would have to pay for this repair.
Engine was loosing power and know dosent start at all
I am filing a complaint due to the lack of timely fix of this recall. It has been more than four months since the recall was issued (NHTSA Recall Number 23V651000) with no repair available.
I have a 2014 Hyundai Sonata that had its engine replaced as part of the recall. The car was taken to Hyundai of Central FL in January 2022 and repairs were completed in May 2022. Since that time the car has had several repairs that I feel are a cause of the faulty engine and or engine related to the replacement. These repairs include oxygen sensors both front and rear replaced, additional sensors, catalytic converter, transmission flush. Just in this month the car has been taken to Greenway Hyundai in Orlando weekly for a check engine light. The car was taken last week after the check engine light came on again and oxygen sensors needed to be replaced again. After the car was picked up last Wed, the check engine light on again and is currently sitting at Greenway Hyundai in Orlando for additional diagnostics. I may have to pay for diagnostic fee again and additional repairs again. So far, the repair costs exceed $3,000. The car displays show that it is one notch from overheating, runs a little sluggish, knocking noise at times and are experiencing similar issues when prior to when the engine was replaced initially back in May 2022. I am afraid of the car seizing up while I'm driving potentially causing an accident or fire as several consumers have noted the same. I have corresponded with Hyundai Corporate on several occasions asking for assistance as I quite frankly do not feel safe Hyundai or Kia vehicles. I had also asked for some type of assistance with my repair costs again that I feel are engine related otherwise why else would the check ENGINE light be displayed. In all instances Hyundai Corporate has simply skirted the greater issue and provided me with a staged response. Now I’m being told that possibly the injectors need to be replaced on a car whose engine was replaced less than 2 years ago. I’ve asked Hyundai several times to replace the car in like kind and quality because they are allowing a car to be unsafe to be operating .
Engine started making a weird knocking noise & was smoking from oil lid. Was driving & the noise got louder & then started to making a squealing noise. Started heading towards the dealership & it slowly started loosing power. Got to the turning lane to turn into the dealership parking lot, car immediately died in middle of road causing me to almost be hit by another vehicle . It started up long enough for me to make it into the parking lot. Car is now currently sitting at dealership waiting till Monday for Hyundai Service center to look at it. I originally had an appt scheduled for Tuesday to get it looked at but it didn’t last that long. speed limit was 35, I couldn’t even drive over 20 mph & had my emergency hazards on.
In May 2022 the engine was replaced as part of the Theta engine recall. Since that time the vehicle has been taken back to the authorized Hyundai dealership for oxygen sensors and a catalytic converter to be replaced. The check engine light is still on and out of pocket expenses are in excess of $3000 and growing. Hyundai corporate is refusing to cover any of these expenses stating that it is not engine related. In the meantime the car check engine is still on and by not taking responsibility for this has caused a safety issues as it is a known fact that their cars have a history of catching fire and I’m fearful that this may occur unless Hyundai takes responsibility and reimburses for these repairs and/or replace the car with one in like, kind and quality. It is my firm belief that Hyundai is well aware that when the engine was recalled it created issues with other parts such as oxygen sensors, catalytic converter , etc to fail and by not taking fiscal responsibility has created a safety issue for millions of Americans. I am begging the NHTSA at demanding Hyundai replace the vehicle and /or reimburse for additional expenses mentioned above as I am not the only American having to deal with Hyundai’s negligence. Simply saying it is not part of the warranty is not an inclusive defensive when millions of American lives are at stake.
As I was driving on the interstate, 25 or so miles away from, my car started to shake and the service lights appeared on the dashboard. I pulled to the shoulder of the road, and shut it off, i turned it back on and it ran for maybe about 10 more miles until it happened again. This time, I turn it back on to get it to run and it doesn’t even begin to shift into drive. It started making a grinding/knocking noise from the engine & shaking, so I shut it off. I had to get it towed home and it has just been sitting in the drive way for a couple weeks now because it’s undrivable. I had no knowledge prior to this incident of an engine recall issued on the car, the dealer I bought it from didn’t inform me and neither did my lien holder. I contacted Hyundai of Slidell and they said since these open safety recalls have not been addressed that they will just reject them. There are about 2 from before I even bought the car that were issued in 2017 I believe that have not been completed. I bought the car in October of 2021 and was not informed of these safety recalls. Prior to this incident, no warning service lights had appeared and I was never told that I need to get my engine inspected as it ran fine.
My engine is burning through oil and also smoking while driving and has a burn smell coming through air vent. I scheduled to have it repaired and have a screenshot of the recall but when I took it to get repaired they stated there are no recalls on my vehicle and I would have to pay. I then called Hyundai customer service and was told they see the recall in one system but not the other and that they will give me a call back. I then never received a call back so I called again and was told that they cannot fix the engine recall and that I would need to get a diagnostic and pay for it myself.
With the 2014 Hyundai Sonata GLS off and onto a tow truck, it spontaneously burst into flames and the eventual total loss of the vehicle. The 2014 Hyundai Sonata GLS need to be added to the notice to Hyundai consumers in the Hyundai 251 recall.
The car warning lights turn on and the car shuts down. The problem is with the Hybrid battery that is malfunctioning. This is a serious life and death problem. After the vehicle stops it goes in neutral and rolls .
UNKNOWN: my wife took the car to go to the store by our apartment. She was going through a roundabout at 10 maybe 7 mph when the car just shut off. We took it to AAA. AAA told us that it was an engine failure, and that there was an engine recall on our vehicle. We still thought it was the Ater. We took it to a shop called Gulich. They saw the engine factory recall and informed Chapman Hyundai in Scottsdale to repair the vehicle. Spoke with a Nick who told us that he would give us a free loaner as they fix our vehicle, and that it was under the recall. Got a call two days later from Nick stating that there was sludge in the car and it was from the previous owner, that is why they’re not fixing it. The previous owner only had the car for two years as we receive the car in 2016 with 36,000 miles on it. Every oil change, tuneup, air conditioning, etc., we were told that the car was a queen puff, and that there should be nothing wrong with it. This is just an unfortunate misunderstanding, I would like to have my car fixed they are pressing me to return the loaner and my wife is in the hospital. Trying to leave me stranded. Please help .

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while the vehicle was at an independent mechanic for an oil change, the contact was informed that the engine oil level was low and there were metal shavings in the engine oil. The independent mechanic referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where a second oil change was performed. The dealer also performed three oil consumption tests every 1,000 miles. In the first oil consumption test, the engine oil level was 2 1/2 quarts less. In the second oil consumption test, the engine oil level was 1 quart lower, and in the third oil consumption test, the engine oil level was 1 1/2 quart lower. The dealer informed the contact to return for the fourth oil consumption test after another 1,000 miles. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V226000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the failure recurred. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

The failure mileage was unavailable.
Lost power to vehicle while driving on the freeway, hybrid system warning was displayed as well as several lights to include engine, brake, and skid control. Had the dealer replace the knock sensor, 3 months later the exact same thing happened, in the same way. All the same obd2 codes were pulled both times.

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the coolant temperature warning light illuminated, and the vehicle began to stall. The contact veered to the side of the road and noticed smoke coming from under the hood. The contact opened the hood and noticed a significant amount of smoke. The vehicle was towed to the Subaru dealer it was purchased from. The Subaru dealer diagnosed that the engine was blown and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was towed to the local Hyundai dealer and the diagnosis was confirmed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that she had received a class-action lawsuit settlement notice related to the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

While driving the vehicle the lights on the dash start to flash, stating that there is a Charging system warning. It says to pull over and not to drive. It becomes very difficult to brake, or steer, almost like the vehicle has lost power. It blew warm air and the check engine light also came on. This can be extremely dangerous if one was on the highway or at an intersection or any place where they needed to pull over to safety. My 12v battery was checked and found to be fine. I called multiple mechanics to come take a look at the vehicle and the codes that were read were P1B77, P1B96, P1B70, P0A0D. The 150 Amp fuse was said to be blown, and was replaced. Sometimes the car will start back up, and sometimes it won't. Currently, it's sitting in my yard. The engine and interior look pristine, but there is something going on with these vehicles that isn't being addressed. This car is dangerous and there are many, many, MANY people that I'm finding on Reddit, YouTube, and the Hyundai forums who are having the exact same issues. I unfortunately cannot afford to continue to keep hiring mechanics, nor to have it towed to the dealership, only for them to do what they are doing with countless other people. They do not seem to understand the issue either and are grasping at straws to replace expensive parts, only to have the issue reoccur. Something needs to be done about this before someone is killed.
While driving normally on the highway I received the "Hybrid Safety Warning: Do Not Drive!" error. The engine began sputtering uncontrollably, the brakes weren't fully responsive and I lost power steering. Thankfully I was able to coast down the road and pull over. If this had happened in traffic I can't imagine an accident would not have happened. Not being able to brake safely or steering properly while your engine is sputtering out of control is terrifying and a MAJOR mistake in design and implementation.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made an abnormal sound. Additionally, while the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle failed to accelerate, and then stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer; however, the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 124,000.

Complete engine failure while driving. Car completely shut off and will not restart. It did not give any warnings prior to happening. Also cruise control stopped working months prior to this engine failure. Took to mechanic and he stated there is recalls on this vehicle and need to turn it in. I have also received mail stating the same about recalls.
The engine appears to have seized. No engine light, smell, sounds or warnings to indicate there was an issue. However, now my car will not start. The engine also will not turn over manually.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the check engine warning light illuminated with a burning odor and a knocking sound coming from the engine compartment before the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was later driven to the local dealer who discovered metal shavings inside the engine and engine oil and informed the contact that the engine needed to be replaced. The engine was replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 150,000. The mechanic stated in the engine evaluation notes rings in the engine bad, and the metal shavings would indicate the rings on the piston were not correctly installed or shimmed to tolerance, causing them to scrape the inner wall of the piston chamber. Further stating it is a mechanical issue and not the negligence of the owner.

My engine is burning oil and the mechanics are telling me it is very unusual for this to happen, there is a recall on my type of car and engine.
A week ago (June 5th) car had been running fine, then all of a sudden lost power. Wouldn’t pick up speed, several warning lights came on and then it just died. Did hear a knocking noise right before it died. It is currently at dealership and was given a time frame of approximately 3 weeks to fully diagnose. This is obviously frustrating as I just got this car at end of March and it is being financed, so paying for a broke down car at this point! I hope that Hyundai manufacturer fixes this issue because it seems to be happening to quite a few people upon doing some research!
Unknown, my vehicle sounds like the valves are knocking. I've had my oil changed on time since I've own the vehicle. While driving, my car shuts off. I pulled over and started it again and 3 mins later it shuts back off. Now I cannot start my vehicle. It literally won't allow me to. And there's metal shavings all throughout my engine.
The engine seized while driving on the highway. The car is currently at the dealership. It started making gurgling noise and slowed down while driving. This happened in the middle of the road while driving, putting me and other drivers at safety. The dealership inspected the car and they said the engine seized. There is a recall and multiple complaints concerning this car. They have now said that they will not honor the recall and repair the car because I don't have all the oil change documents. I bought the car as a used car and have my documents since I have owned the car. They are taking care of the issue that is definitely manufacturing issues.
5/25 Driving down the e-way step on the gas to pass a car engine just cut off while I'm doing 60 mph. I had to cross two lanes just to get to the emergency lane.
The engine locked up right as I pulled into my driveway. No warning lights or anything indicating there was a problem. I’m lucky to have made it home when it happened. I know other Hyundais are being recalled for the same thing. Not sure why my year isn’t being looked into
My car has been at the dealer since 5/3 which i had an appointment for the TXXI engine failure and fuel pump 227 recalls. I was driving my lights all came on and the car decelerated and wouldn't speed up anymore the steering wheel also got tight.i just got oil change at the end of March and haven't been any long distances. I was told 2 days later that my car was being diagnosed it is now 5/10 and I'm still being told my car is being diagnosed with absolutely no update, they also refuse to give me a rental car or provide a out of house rental... They are making me pay out of pocket for rentals then can only post for reimbursement which isn't guaranteed after the work is done but cannot give me any type of word on even when the diagnostic will be done. I asked if they have any order to diagnosing like is it in order he said no i said so someone can bring their car in after mine and get completed before for same thing just depending on which the technician decides to do the advisor said yes candidly. I've been calling for updates and have not received anything other than the diagnosis is still not done after 7 days. I'm paying for a car that i don't have access to and it's not being expedited in order. When i dropped the car off they said it would take 4 days tops with are they starting my car then not finishing.
On our way back home from a road trip, the Sonata lost horsepower and I was only able to drive at about 40 mph (on highway). Once we reached the next town, stopped at an AutoZone since the check engine light came on. Tested the issue and it looks like the car went into safe mode and there was an issue with engine oil consumption. Added more oil and continued our way home. We were stopping about every hour to "rest" the car for about 30 minutes and recheck oil levels. After the 30 minutes, we continued on our way home. Once we pulled up tp our home, the engine died. We were fortunate that it didn't happen on the road. We haven't been able to turn the car back on. It has been like this since July 2022. Sitting in our driveway. We have contacted the dealership where we purchased the car and they refuse to have the car towed to their location and they won't even look at our vehicle. Currently, our VIN is not coming up with the engine recall when I search it here but it looks like our vehicle is also affected by that recall. We did receive a notice previously.
I bought my car in December of 2020 with 64,000 miles and it start stalling in August of 2021. They did work on it and said it was good then it completely stopped in November 2021 and they said my engine was bad and they weren’t fixing it. I didn’t even put 10k miles on there. There was 72,028 miles when I took it in.
Check Charging system warning pops on and the car slowly loses power. Steering and braking are effected. So many people with this issue. It's scary. No highway driving for me!
Hello! I bought a car at an auction, it had the crankshaft bearings turned and it was knocking. I decided to repair it myself in my workshop . When I disassembled it, all the bearings and crankshaft necks were erased there (I kept all the details) the connecting rod on the 3rd cylinder was black and the bearings were erased into dust. I repaired it myself, but it still doesn't sound right (but errors don't burn) . A friend told me about the problems associated with this model and I found out on the website that there is a review on the engine. Therefore, I immediately went to the Hyundai dealership, where I was refused a recall saying that I had a good engine because the engine error lamps do not burn. To which I objected by saying that the recall policy warns of bringing the engine to jamming and a possible accident (despite the fact that the engine was already on the verge of this). In fact, the motor has already died. What should I do next. I understand if there is a review of a poor - quality engine , it needs to be replaced ( I didn 't come up with it ) . Thanks for understanding.

I ALREADY REPLACED MY ENGINE BECAUSE THE CAR ALWAYS BURNED ALOT OF OIL. I NEVER HAD A OIL LEAK BUT I HAD TO CONSTANTLY ADD OIL TO THE CAR A COUPLE OF TIMES A MONTH. AFTER REPLACING THE ENGINE I DROVE THE CAR FOR ABOUT 4 MONTHS. THE CAR STARTED STALLING ON ME (NO WARNING LIGHTS) THEN WOULD START BACK UP AFTER A FEW TRIES. THIS LAST TIME I DROVE THE CAR I WAS DRIVING MY CAR ON A MAIN BUSY ROAD. I STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT WAITING FOR IT TO TURN GREEN. THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I WENT TO PROCEED AND THE CAR JUST STALLED ON ME AGAIN. NO WARNING LIGHTS OR ANYTHING TO GIVE ME AN INDICATION THAT THE CAR WAS HAVING ISSUES. I TRIED TO RE-START THE CAR AND IT WOULDNT START. I HAD TO GET MY VEHICLE TOWED TO A MECHANIC SHOP. IT HAS CURRENTLY BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR ABOUT A MONTH NOW AND THE MECHANIC IS HAVING A HARD TIME TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE CAR. I WAS TOLD PREVIOUSLY THAT THERE WERE RECALLS ON THE ENGINE BUT EVERYTIME I CALL THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIPS THEY TELL ME THERE ARE NO RECALLS FOR MY VEHICLE. I HAVE ALREADY PAID ATLEAST $3,500 IN REPAIRS AND STILL HAVING ISSUES
This fuel pump recall 227 was issued on May 2022 and I've yet to be able to make an appointment to get it fixed. The Hyundai of San Bruno I was finally able to reach said they'll call me back when the parts come in. That was almost a year ago and when you call their service department, you can't even leave a voicemail. On some occasions you can leave a voicemail, but it's never returned. This is a fuel pump hose, not a complicated part. They should have this part. This is unacceptable as this recall addresses a potential fire risk.
I was commuting home from work when suddenly there was smoke coming from under the hood and the vehicle completely stopped working in the middle of the road. It would not accelerate and I had to get help to move it into a parking lot. I had to get it towed to my home. The car will not start. If we turn the key to try to start it, the engine starts smoking.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 MPH, an abnormal knocking sound was heard coming from the engine. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact continued to drive, but the vehicle lost motive power and stalled while driving. The contact stated that while the vehicle was rolling, he shifted into neutral(N) and restarted the vehicle; however, several unknown warning lights illuminated while accelerating, and the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the residence. The contact stated that he had received unknown recall notices related to the failure. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist because he had not serviced the vehicle at a Hyundai dealer since 2018. Additionally, the manufacturer advised the contact to file a claim with BBB regarding a class-action lawsuit. The failure mileage was unknown.
The car used up to 4 quarts of oil per week with just driving when necessary. It burned oil and blew it out under the hood.
Vehicle caught fire.
I bought a car from rightway automotive Fort wayne Indiana it's been in the shop several times and currently in the shop since December 22, 2022 to still today February 11th 2023. This time my car is at hoosier car store in Fort wayne Indiana and has told me several times it done and then keeps turning around with another problem and I can't get rightway or hoosier to respond and tell me what's going on
The contact owned a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated there was play in the steering wheel while driving at various speeds. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where an unknown repair was completed. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle made abnormal sounds while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that there were metal shavings in the engine oil. The contact stated while driving 10 MPH, the steering wheel loosened up inadvertently and she lost control of the vehicle. The contact depressed the brake pedal but the vehicle failed to respond, causing the vehicle to crash into two occupied vehicles. The air bags deployed. The contact sustained a seat belt mark, and soreness on the neck and shoulders. The contact also sustained numbness in the right hand. The contact later sought medical assistance. The occupants of the other vehicle did not sustain any injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot, where it was awaiting to be totaled. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,000.

After driving for about 45 minutes, car began to shake and make loud knocking noises, and the check engine and oil light both came on. After adding 3-4 quarts of oil in order to get to the destination, it seemed okay. After turning the car off, and back on, after about 15 minutes of driving the shaking, loud knocking noises and check engine light turned back on. At this point, the car was towed to a local mechanic. The mechanic noted that this was a problem with the engine and oil line and should be brought back to Hyundai because there is an active recall regarding this issue. Upon bringing the car to the Hyundai dealership, they agreed it was a recall issue and would fix it under the recall. Two days later we were informed from Hyundai that it would be $8,000 to replace the engine because the car is about 2,000 miles over the recall warranty and they will not make any exceptions. After calling Hyundai's corporate number, they agreed that it cannot be fixed under the recall warranty. They also confirmed that they never notified us regarding this recall. If we had known, we could have fixed this while it was under the mileage. The car is not drive-able and we are devastated by the lack of communication from Hyundai and refusal to fix this issue. There was no warning and while we are grateful nobody was hurt, this is extremely dangerous and we are now left without a car!!

Sounds like engine is gonna blow and the oil is where it needs to be.
In the GDI engines, the fuel is injected into a camshaft-driven high-pressure pump and use a higher than normal compression ratio for increased power as well as “dished” pistons for increased combustion in the cylinder. But GDI engine defects allegedly cause oil consumption, restricted oil flow, sudden stalling, engine failures and non-collision fires. The plaintiff says Hyundai ramped up production and got in a rush which caused the workmanship to suffer when the GDI engines were created. Engine blocks, pistons, connecting rod bearings and other components are defective due to the workmanship. By failing to fit together, the engine components allegedly fail prematurely which causes metal debris to travel through the engine oil. Contaminated oil then causes a lack of engine lubrication which damages the GDI engines
Car has an oil consumption issue. I noticed noise coming from the engine, checked my oil and found its was empty. I brought my car into the dealer and was told about the oil consumption suit, I was out of warranty and that hyundai won't do anything for me because I am not the original owner. I was told later from another auto shop that I was given false information because this is a campaign. I am the 2nd owner of this vehicle.
I bought my car at 97k miles in June 2022. From the 2nd day of having it, my car was shaking horribly. I sent it back to the dealership they said the front motor mount was collapsed. They repaired it but said there is still shaking but they don't know why. About 2 months later, I get in with Universal Hyundai and they only say that I need my axels and spark plugs replaced along with the air filters. They do a balance and alignment on my car as well as an oil change. The balance and alignment was either not done properly or my car just needs it done super regularly. Not too long after while I'm driving out of a friend's neighborhood my car is in drive and I'm going around 5 mph, my car stops with all of the lights on. I turn my car off and back on and carefully drive it home. Also, my car key always gets locked up in the ignition. One day I go to turn my car off and my ignition locks and I had to get my car towed and my ignition replaced with new car keys. Later, I take it to my mechanic to see what he can do and to get another oil change. He said he doesn't think it's my axels but my motor mounts and other things. Then my check engine light goes off a week later and it's my power train and anti-lock brake system. The next day on the way back to the mechanic my car slows down, I was only going 40ish mph, and all of the lights are shown. I turn my car off and on and I get it to my mechanic (my mechanic only down minor stuff btw). I start hearing a woodpecker noise from the engine and my mechanic tells me to get it to the shop asap. The next morning, I call my warranty to see if it's covered and they tell me that my engine will blow if I drive on it. And now my car will be in the shop for a month. And I can't find out the service done to my car prior to me owning it. And every time I take it somewhere they don't know what's up with it completely.
MY CAR HAS BEEN DRIVING IN LIMP MODE FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP OVER 8 TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM WHILE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. THE REPLACED THE KNOCK SENSER TWICE AND IT PASSES THE BEARINGS TEST. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BLINKS AND IT HESISTATES WHILE DRIVING. I ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR ONE MONTH SINCE THIS STARTED AND EVERYONE IS GIVING ME THE RUN ARAOUND AND NOT FIXING THE PROBLEM. NOW MY WARRANTY IS EXPIRING BECAUSE I HAVE OVER 100,000 MILES ON IT BUT NOTHING IS FIXED.
I got my oil changed and in 2 weeks time I noticed a burning smell and checked my oil and there was not a drop of oil. I noticed there was an open investigation into Hyundai vehicles and how some are using excessive amounts of oil with no prior warning signs. Just wanted it documented that this is a legit issue and needs to be addressed ASAP..[XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
I am the owner of a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. That car is 8 years old and has 69K miles on it. At no time did Hyundai Motor Company notify that my car was impacted by an engine failure recall. On November 10, 2022 the car was being driven. At no time did it give any potential warning, instead the car fully stopped while in motion at 25 mph. There was no warning, no lights appeared on the dashboard until the car had stalled itself out. When I called the local dealer where the car was purchased, I was promised a call back. That call never came. I was able to contact someone at corporate who did confirm the vin number of my car is on an engine recall. I was told to contact a local dealer to find someone to replace the recall alerts. Again the local SURESKY dealer cannot help me. After spending 4 hours on the phone, I was able to connect with someone in a service department who indicated that the return volume of these car is so extensive that they are backlogged 3 to 4 more. I would encourage all users of this car to immediately end use of it. I would encourage all users to look into local LEMON laws. This entire recall was handled completely wrong by Hyundai Corporate who. Nobody can answer questions, they can only pass you around. The company should be investigated for consumer fraud at the state and federal level. The company should be investigated for proper accounting, proper tax reporting, for the recall.
Engine died on the interstate at 65 mph, then the dash lights started going crazy. Shortly followed by smoke coming from the engine compartment. I opened the hood and could see a short casing the fire which I could not put out with my extinguisher.
At approximately 115K-120K miles, I noticed that the engine was burning oil at a significantly faster rate. The oil/ engine light did not come on (only flickered) even though there was seemingly no oil in the car when checked. I took the car for maintenance and was advised to do consumption testing. I went to Hyundai for consumption testing multiple times and was advised that the car is burning about 2.5 quarts of oil at approximately every 1K miles. Hyundai is still investigating the issue but has not yet provided a remedy or reason for this problem.
My safety was put at risk because i was driving on the highway and the engine went out on me. The engine is also knocking making a loud sound. I took the car to the dealer and they refused to do the safety recalls.
The engine seized while driving the vehicle (vehicle belongs to my daughter). Towed to the mechanic. Replaced battery and starter, both burned up due to issue. Mechanic tried starting the car again to trouble shoot additional issues and burned up the new starter due to seized engine. Mechanic recommending to call the local dealer because of known class action recall on the 2014 Sonata engines for this problem.
Hello I need your help! According to all info my car it has an engine recall when it starts with losing oil. Which my car has been doing, losing oil. The recall engine could seize up, stall, stop, but they are telling me that because my car is out of warranty 60k for second owner, they cannot repair it, this is a hazard to all. According to the records Mrs. [XXX] (former Employee at Hyundai) pulled up on my car she said was covered and I was under the 120 thousand miles. this report also clearly shows that recalls over the 60k were covered and fixed on my car, this should be covered as well a recall is a recall and has nothing to do with warranty. I had been waiting for months to get approval I have been trying to get ahold of the service staff member [XXX] to no avail. Finally, I decided to contact the dealership online and found the employee I was trying to contact no longer works for Hyundai. I was not notified nor was another employee assigned to my case. And what is even more peculiar is I was able to leave a message for that employee[XXX] and the receptionist did not tell me she no longer working there or that someone else was taking her accounts. So, after leaving a message on-line I received a call from [XXX] At the palatine Hyundai. I explained the situation and how much time I have been waiting. He submitted my documents right away the next day [XXX] told me it was denied due to my car being out of warranty. I am not sure what warranty has to do with the recall of engines. This is clearly a hazard. I am checking the oil consistently it sometimes very low and a quart is needed. I am being told… They will not even look at my car for the recall because of being out of warranty(60k). I received a text saying to call right away to get it taken care of but once the denied paperwork came back, they cancelled and said thanks for letting us service your car when I wasn't, even in the dealership much less having had service. On Aug 21,2022 I was driving my car and making a right turn on a street called Armstrong Mill and the vehicle just died out on me. Me being a female not knowing anything about cars I thought it was my battery or alternator. I replaced them both totaling almost 1100 dollars. The car still wouldn't start. The mechanic checked my oil and it was DRY which was odd being that i had just got a oil change 07/01/2022,which i have proof of as well as 4 other oil changes i got this yr. So i get to work that night and i start to research. I have only had this car since Oct 20,2021 so I was so confused. I found the recall and civil suit against Hyundai. I called Don Franklin Hyundai the next morning the service guy, Chris, asked for the last 6 numbers of my vin. I provided it to him and he said yes there is a open recall on you vehicle i have to get the process started but i have to warn you they can deny it because its been open for so long even tho you are a new owner of the vehicle. Well that is exactly what they did. I got denied for having sludge on the engine which i was told came from poor maintenance of the vehicle concerning the oil change. I got a oil change in Jan, April, May and also July. I got the air fixed in the cars air conditioning and all i kept this car in shape. There was no problems with this car until this engine. Now i was just told by BBB autoline that my complaint was not eligible because per BBB national program extended warranty claims vehicles purchased after 07-01-2020 that did not have the ksds performed prior to the occurence or engine concern receive the benefits of the lifetime warranty. I had no clue of this was not made aware AT ALL! I need help I was financing this car and now nothing. Please tell me my next steps. My children and myself could have been hurt badly why do they even have these cars still on the market with such a dangerous recall.
I started my 2014 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and proceeded out of the garage. Almost immediately out of the garage, a loud high alarm went off and the dashboard read "Electric Motor Warning - Safely pull over and do not drive". My vehicle simultaneously lost any ability to accelerate and slowly tried to get the vehicle into a parking spot in our apartment's driveway. This was not the first time this has happened. This same thing happened earlier this year and required a recall service that I was told to be fixed after being without a vehicle for 3 months!
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while his son was driving approximately 40 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact then stated that the vehicle failed to accelerate above 45 MPH. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the mechanic referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V312000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) and stated that the fuel system feed line failed and caused the engine to be starved of fuel. The contact was informed that the feed line needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure but the contact had not received a call back. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 56,000.

I was on the interstate and my engine started to sputter and the check engine light came on. I quickly decelerated from about 70 down to under 50. I was able to safely pull over to the shoulder and had to have my vehicle towed.
Back light panel had to be replaced because light keep blowing. Engine is burning oil and have to put oil in often
I was driving down the road in my 2014 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.0T, in the car with me was my two young children ages 1 & 2. We were driving normally when the car all of a sudden shut off and died in the middle of the road while ongoing traffic behind me. I was able to come to a safe stop and crank the car back up and move to the side of the road. When I cranked the car back up it began knocking and the engine shaking. I immediately turned the car off and got my children out of the vehicle and we waited for my fiancé and a tow truck. Car has always had oil changes on time in the three years I owned it. Only had 125k miles. Oil was changed 1 week and a half prior to this incident. I only ran it 567 miles before my engine stalled. Thankful I was not rear ended with my babies in the back seat.
Car is leaking excessive oil all through the engine and other main components. Theta engines are faulty and leading to engine staling and then failure. My engine stalled once. Was throwing no dash lights or codes. Next time the car was cranked it started knocking, still not throwing any dash lights. Brought to Hyundai dealership. The manufacturer is refusing to fix the engine saying it was ran on to low on oil to often. I had my records of maintenance to prove other wise once I provided them Hyundai said no still then said no because they took pictures of the inside and it looks as if it was running low on oil. This engine seizing can result in fire and major safety hazards including death and Hyundai is taking no accountability.
Hyundai Recall 953 is not being properly reported for certain Vins. This issue is causing 953 to go without being properly fixed and causing prolonged engine oil leaking back into the engine. This is effecting manufactures responsibility to fix their safety recalls. Manufacturers claim the engine fails due to lack of oil… knowing 953 causes oil to burn excessively. Without proper reporting of active safety recalls they’re not able to get fixed causing multiple issues down the road for second and third owners on certified used vehicles and a vehicle that will have engine failure despite any maintenance.
I am having to put quarts of oil in my car every month and it is not leaking out on the ground. I don't know where the oil is going. The car never has a warning light that there it low or no oil. I have to check it every few days to make sure. The car is not under warranty. .
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that after refueling her vehicle, the vehicle hesitated upon depression of the accelerator pedal without warning. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle but the vehicle failed to restart. She initially towed the vehicle to her home and the next day to her father's home. Her father replaced the starter but that failed to repair the vehicle; the vehicle was then towed to the dealer where they discovered sludge in the engine. The dealer requested oil change service receipts, which the contact provided; however, the dealer declined to repair the vehicle under warranty. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure but sided with the dealer on the decision to not repair the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.

Two weeks prior to this incident, I had an oil change, fuel flush, and brake flush. I was driving 35mph, my check engine light flashed, and it died in the middle of the road. Pushed it out of way and had to tow it to shop. Shop called to say my engine locked up and that it was under a recall. That they had spoken to the dealership and that my engine should be covered under warranty. I paid to have my car towed to dealership on June 2 and have yet to even have my car diagnosed from the dealership even though the shop already did. They said it locked up due to the engine overheating. I am know paying on my car and a rental without any timeline of when something will happen.
On 19 June 2022 at approximately 5:30 PM EDT, the engine of my 2014 Hyundai Sonata was electronically shutdown (via vehicle protection mode a.k.a. limp mode) while driving on I20 Westbound heading towards Atlanta, GA; lost all ability to accelerate and a number of warning lights illuminated on the dash. There was zero indication of a potential failure until that very moment on the highway...at which time, I made my way across two lanes of traffic while barely avoiding being struck by multiple vehicles to include semi-trucks traveling at high rates of speed. My husband and I were fortunate not to lose our lives or cause the deaths of others due to this engine failure. After doing some research, I learned that Hyundai has known of these engine failures for years and that there is currently a class action suit against Hyundai Theta Engines. Personally, I've experienced a number of issues mentioned in the suit to include excessive oil consumption. And, I've been diligent about addressing all recalls issued by the manufacturer in a timely manner. After waiting three hours on Interstate 20, our tow truck finely arrived. The very next day, I had a mechanic conduct a diagnostic test and it indicated a camshaft/crankshaft failure. Also, noticed that the engine had burned through an excessive amount of oil and I just had an oil change on 23 May. Feeling unsafe to operate the vehicle any longer, I turned it over to Hyundai of Kennesaw located at 2878 Barrett Lakes Blvd Kennesaw, GA 30144 on 20 June to await an engine replacement. The service technician informed me that it would be three weeks before they could perform diagnostics to see if I even qualify for an engine replacement; then another four months to replace the engine if approved. No rental/service vehicle was provided to me by Hyundai for the loss of use of my property. Though I have rental coverage, my insurer USAA would not make me whole either as I was not involved in an accident.
In the engine compartment, my car is currently leaking gasoline. it was not taped over or replaced when it was clearly damaged; due there not being a remedy, but there was still steps to do that would help the situation, and vandergriff hyundai arlington, tx, did not do any of that. Car serviced for recalls June 11, 2022, started leaking 06/16/2022
April 2,2022 I took my car in for an oil change. Immediately after leaving the car smoked as if it was on fire. I was pulled over by Walls Mississippi police department because they thought the car was on fire. I contacted Hyundai. They have not done anything to fix this situation. I have not been able to drive the car since then. It needed oil a week after the oil change April 2,2022. It smokes very bad. It has lost power. The engine knocks. I had to get a rental car at the rate of $1000 for a 3 week rental. My car note is $578. The car was repossessed today because Hyundai would not fix the car so I could go to work and pay my car note. I have numerous emails and receipts. No one helped me at Hyundai. They are making us pay our carnotes. Pay rental fees out of pocket. They only reimburse you for your rental once your car goes into the shop. All Hyundai dealerships have a 2 month wait time before they will let you bring the car in,otherwise it will sit on the lot for 2 months. I have tried 5 times since 2021 until now to get the recalls done. Hyundai Mt. Mariah Memphis kept the car a week and asked me to come get it because they did not have all the parts to complete the recalls. Hyundai Olive Branch Mississippi stated they have a 2 to 3 month wait time as well. No one has loaner cars. I explained this to the claim person Julia at Hyundai and no one did anything to fix this.
Our 2014 Hyundai Sonata engine caught fire while driving. Have been getting the oil change on the regular but still have to put oil in it about 3 weeks later and smokes really, really bad. My son's safety was put at risk because he was the one driving the vehicle at the time. The check engine light stays on even after the mechanic shop turns it off, it comes back on a couple of hours later. I just purchased this car in November of 2021. The motor has already locked up on it and we have done everything we're suppose to do to keep the vehicle running.
I drove a mile from my house and the vehicle stalled at a turn. The engine shut off. I tried to turn it back on and it did not. I have an electrical push button and it did not work. My passenger and I pushed the car out of the road into the back area of an HEB. We then opened the hood and the engine started smoking. I had called my boyfriend who then arrived. The engine continued to smoke and an HEB driver saw the incident. He came over with a fire extinguisher and sprayed it because they could see flames starting under the car. The fire department and police had been called. The car engine then went up in flames and my boyfriend used the fire extinguisher. The fire department arrived and went over to the car and cut the wires. Nothing on the car works. It has not been assessed because I only had collision insurance and my company would not come to assess it. They did tow it back to my house where it is sitting and not working. I can't even move it into neutral. There was not warning of this and I had driven the car to the airport (an hour away) and back five hours earlier that day and it seemed fine. The fire department said that if they need to be contacted they have a report on the incident.
Engine failed in the middle of driving down highway 89 in Arizona. No warning signs, no engine light, just complete failure in the middle of driving. My safety and my mom's and cat's safety was at risk because there was not a safe place to pull off the highway. An officer happened to be driving by and helped push the car off the highway a few more feet. In his words, we could've been killed how our car was parked because there was no safe place to pull off this particular highway. The car has not yet been inspected by a manufacturor or dealer, as I am in a small town in the middle of Arizona. I will need to rent a uhaul truck that pulls a car on a trailor and tow the car to the nearest hyundai dealer for further inspection. No warning lights, no warning sounds, nothing at all. Just complete failure.
We were driving and the engine just quit. We were able to safely get to the median. The minute the car was stopped we smelled something burning. We got the kids out of the car and to the other side of the road. We looked under the hood and could smell the burning but didn't see where it was coming from. Soon we were back on the side of the road waiting for our ride to pick us up. About 20 to 25 min later we saw smoke coming out of the hood. My husband called the fire dept and just as they arrived the whole thing lit on fire under the hood. The fire dept was able to put out the fire. Now we are waiting to have it appraised by our insurance company.
The engine seized while driving. I lost all power and was forced off to the side of the road. Had it taken to dealership, and they said engine block need to be replaced. They won't honor the safety recall despite the fact that it says they will on the company campaign site search. There was no warning lights or messages regarding the catastrophic failure of the engine.
I was driving home from work one afternoon on a two lane highway. All of a sudden a warning on the dash popped saying "Hybrid system failure pull over immediately" and the car started beeping loudly. I lost engine power, brakes and steering.....I'm lucky to be alive today. No one was on the road so I didn't get rear ended when the car came to a complete stop. I tried to restart the vehicle numerous times, however when I would shift into drive the car simply wouldn't move. I put it in neutral and pushed it to the side of the road and called a tow truck. Dealership maintenance quoted me around 8K to replace some of the hybrid system but it seemed they didn't even know what was wrong with it. The car is 8 years old with around 132,000 miles on it. I expected it to last a longer. I'm amazed reading so many other entries with the same hybrid system failure and surprised Hyundai hasn't killed someone yet with this faulty design. If I had been on the interstate portion of my commute I would be dead. Don't buy these cars if you value your own wellbeing or care about any of your loved ones.
I was driving on the highway in 70mph traffic and the car’s dash board alarm sounded with the following warning sign on the dash board: “Hybrid System Warning, Safely Stop. Do Not Drive”. The car seemed to have put itself in neutral without warning. I then pulled over to the side of the highway. I turned the car off and let it rest for about 5 minutes. I attempted to restart the car but the car would not start. All of the lights were on on the dash board and the Hybrid System Warning came back on. I could not let the windows back up or close the sunroof. I called a tow truck attempting to get a jump start but that did not work and I had to eventually get the car towed off the highway after sitting there with my children for 2 hours. This is very dangerous and has never happened before.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 MPH, the vehicle independently and abruptly stopped. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact pulled the vehicle over safely and then drove home. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic. The first mechanic diagnosed the failure as an unknown shutdown. The failure reoccurred and the vehicle was towed back to the same local mechanic; however, it was sent to another dealer due to engine failure. The manufacturer was notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 124,000.
Mileage: 124,000
Engine failure causing loss of vehicle mobility, engine stoped no alerts. Vehicle became hard this steer and stop due to loss of these power assisted controls.
Although my VIN is not a part of the recall I have undergone the same issue as those recalled. Engine light blinking, car in limp mode, unable to drive. My local mechanic scanned the codes to find glow plug stuck on so he reprogrammed car but it went back in limp mode. Then towed car to Hyundai who reprogrammed my car and I picked it up. However I did not make it home. Car towed back to hyundai. They then had to replace the sensor-assy knock. Car seems fine now and engine light no longer blinking for now.
While driving home, going about 40-45 mph my dashboard lit up with a check engine, battery, steering and oil lights. Within a couple miles (2 maybe 3) I lost all power. All this happened within minutes. I tried to restart after sitting for 10 minutes, and the engine would not (even try to) turn over. Ended up using jumper cables to start get car started when the engine started knocking--horribly. *Likely not available for inspection unless said inspection happens soon.* My safety was extremely compromised as it all happened within minutes of any dashboard indicators that there was a concern at 6pm. I was in the midst of driving on a semi-busy road during rush hour. I barely made it up the hill where I had just enough room to pull off into a *slightly* wider area of the road--this road had no gutters/pull-offs. The car has not been inspected as of yet. It will be going to the dealer by COB today (2/25/22). I was informed it would take at least a few days for them to go over the car. It has not been inspected by any police or insurance representatives as of this time.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while his son was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed with bearing wear resulting in engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer denied the engine replacement due to the rebuilt title. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V226000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH, she heard an abnormal sound. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to park on the side of the road. The contact stated a bystander was able to assist her and informed her there was no oil in the engine. The contact stated she had the oil change in October. The bystander left to purchase oil and added oil to the engine. The contact restarted the vehicle but continued to hear the abnormal sound. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the engine to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed by a coworker that her VIN was associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V121000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The manufacturer had been informed of the failure but was informed they would not be responsible for the repairs for the recall due to not having the recall completed previous to the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 147,000.

i was coming around a bent and accelerated down a straightaway when the car shutdown and all dash lights came on. I had to quickly find a spot to pull over as I was losing momentum and it was hard to brake. I pulled on to the front yard of a residence as there was no road shoulder. The car was smoking and there was a distinct smell coming from it. Some of the car was still out over the road so traffic had to avoid it. There weren't streetlights and it was foggy at night. I used the emergency flashers. There was no warning before the problem took place as far as engine light or warning lights being on. I had the car towed. It is currently at a dealership. Dealership determined engine seizure after diagnosis.
January 29th my check engine light came on and I was not able to go no more than 40mph. there is a knocking noise coming from the engine. took it to autozone and the code was P1326. Now when I start it up it has a smoking smell to it and the knocking is getting louder. I have not driven my vehicle since January 29 2022 The knocking noise first started January 24th. I see there is a recall for this issue with other Hyundai vehicles but for some reason it is not showed for my vin. One Hyundai dealership told me they can not look at my vehicle until march1
I’ve had my car for a year and I change the oil faithfully. Well I now have a rod knocking and not sure why? My car has 138,000 miles on it. And I’ve changed my oil and filter as I should so now my car is sitting in the yard it cranks but when you crank it you wouldn’t think anything was wrong with it. You give it gas and it starts knocking. Why is this happening?

Vehicle died while driving on the highway had to pull over and have the car towed. Hyaundai dealership diagnosed it as a bad engine bearing which was part of an open and active recall which they confirmed. Hyaundai advised it is part of a recall that is still open but stated we didn’t come soon enough so they refuse to fix it. We never received the recall notice and the recall is still open and active.
Engine needs to be replaced, engine light, brake light and loud ticking sound in engine
I purchased this car on November 17th, it started giving me trouble on November 25th so i parked it. The problem was it started making a really loud noise and started to slow down in mid traffic while i was driving. i had to bear to the side of the road to avoid a car crash. i think it’s the motor , i’ve purchased a brand new battery and starter and neither of those was the problem. my car have been sitting every since the 25th i need to know what’s wrong with my vehicle beside the recalls i have on it!
Sept 30, 2021 I was driving home on the highway with a speed limit Of 65mph, I was in the far left lane when my car started slowing down and all of my MIL's lit up the dashboard. I started panicking stepping on the gas pedal to speed up because of the traffic but I was unable to. But i managed to pull over to the shoulder then I turned off the car, waited a few minutes, then started the car back up. I proceeded off the exit managing only 35mph max speed. I had someone check my car And they found out I was low by 2 qts of oil. But prior to this I had just had my oil changed 1 month before. The car has 116100 mi on the odometer. The next day I contacted my local Hyundai dealership and was told I will need to have the car towed to them at that location. I was also told the time frame for someone to look at my car and repair would be 90 days turn around time. They advised me to contact other surrounding Hyundai dealerships. I contacted the another dealership and was told that I needed an appointment and I was scheduled to bring my car in a week later. My car has been at the dealership since 10/5/21. On oct 8th I was told they needed to perform a complete engine diagnostic, and a bearing clearance test to determine if the bearings have failed which results in internal engine failure. Which turned out to be a P1326 code. They also informed me that the engine would need to be replaced but would need it authorized by corporate. This is the message I received from Hyundai personnel: "We will submit a request to Hyundai on how to proceed. They will need to submit the requested maintenance records. Next time hearing from Hyundai personnel was on November 11th I was informed that records show that the status of my car is still "pending". My car has not been approved by Hyundai corporate as of this writing and I can't get a loner because they don't have the program anymore!
Engine failed spun bearing. Hyundai said they will not cover their defective engine.
My 2014 Hyundai Sonata shut off while I was driving twice. There is evidence of a knocking sound. Three different mechanics mentioned a possible recall from 2017 but my car wasn't serviced for it.
The acceleration and, subsequently, the engine failed while on the freeway. All warning lights came on. This was a high-risk and potentially very dangerous situation to be on the freeway and have your vehicle suddenly lose power. The car was towed by AAA to a nearby service center. The mechanic there, as well as the AAA mechanic, both identified the engine issue and were aware of the current recall issue. They instructed to tow it to a dealer. It sat at an off-site lot owned by the Kearney Mesa Hyundai dealership for over a month, requiring car rental fees in excess of $1,000, before it was even diagnosed as an engine failure. But now, it still hasn't been approved by Hyundai Motor America for an engine replacement. First, I was told that they needed maintenance records. I provided those, plus all the recall notices I had received related to this, and for which I had brought the vehicle in for. They said the maintenance records weren't sufficient to reach a final decision. I was told by the dealership that they have asked them "to take pictures of the valve train, which requires them to remove the valve cover and order additional parts to reinstall in the event the engine is not approved." I don't understand this lengthy process -- and making me jump through hoops -- considering Hyundai is already under a concent order and subject to a total civil penalty of $140 million for its untimely handling of these engine recalls in the first place. Their website says: "Hyundai is committed to ensuring the quality and integrity of all our products through continuous improvement. In the event of a safety-related defect in one of our vehicles, Hyundai acts swiftly and efficiently to recall and fix the problem at no cost to affected customers." LOL. Also, when I first entered my VIN # it showed as having the recall issue now, all of the sudden, it doesn't. What's interesting is that when this There are no open Safety Recalls or Service Campaigns for this vehicle.
2014 Hyundai Sonata ([XXX]) 137,000 miles engine stalled at 70 mph on interstate. Loss of power to entire vehicle in heavy traffic. No warning lights or early indications of problems. The event caused 2 cars to leave roadway to avoid crashing. After getting to emergency lane the engine started back up with no malfunction indicator lamps or check engine light. Completed the remaining 5 mile trip at slow speed with the vehicle stalling once again as I was parking. This vehicle had recalls and never received any information regarding them. Hyundai denied engine replacement for not having knock sensor update performed. Purchased the car on February 7, 2017 and took car to dealership on August 21,2018 because of no brake lights. They performed inspection on 2 recalls that I was not aware of because I received no information on. The dealership never mentioned an open service campaign regarding a knock sensor update (Remedy date August 9,2018) that could have warned me of these problems and extended the engine warranty to a lifetime warranty. The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while his son was driving 30 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated the instrument panel with an abnormal clicking sound coming from the engine. The contact towed the vehicle to an independent mechanic who informed him that the vehicle was no longer safe to be driven. The contact then called a dealer and had the vehicle towed to the dealer for a diagnostic test. The contact was informed that the engine had failed and that the dealer needed approval from the manufacturer to replace the engine. The contact was called back and informed that they would not be able to service the vehicle because the vehicle had a salvage title. The contact then called the manufacturer directly and was given the same information. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 79,000. From contact: Hyundai National has been extremely uncooperative. It was explained to them that the vehicle was about to prove fatal to his son, but none of the executives (to which the contact reached via email) replied via email. The case manager was rude and said she is the ultimate authority to make any decision and she has made a decision that Hyundai will not cover the repair of the vehicle. It should be noted that the salvage title of the vehicle had nothing to do with the engine. It was hit at the rear right due to which the vehicle was salvaged. Similar problems have happened with many many Hyundai vehicles. Do not know why it is not a national recall.

My engine cut out on me driving down the interstate and my check engine light started flashing. After getting my car off the road safely but barley I turned it off and turned it back on and check engine light still flashing and now my car will not proceed higher than 2000 rpm or over 60 mph. Took my car to a shop and the ran scanner and it came back as knock sensor. That was replaced and my car did the same thing after driving it about 2 miles. They ran the scan codes again and this time it came back as VVT solenoid. That was replaced but while replacing the solenoid When took out there was copper/metal shavings on the solenoid. Doing further investigation on this it is shown that the car of the same year make and model I have has had recall for engine failure for the bearings which would cause the shavings on my solenoid but my car is not under the recall but having the same exact problem.
Dear Sir/Madam, I bought the vehicle in 2016 from a local dealer, unknown to me that the vehicle had a branded/salvage title. After driving for a few years, about a month and half ago, while driving the engine just stalled on me. After having back and forth with Hyundai National Team and Hyundai Corporate, they denied my warranty claim that because its a salvaged title. The engine is original and was not tempered with as confirmed my Local Hyundai Dealer. Hyundai has currently recalled about 1.6 Million vehicles due to premature bearing wear and potential engine failure issue. The vehicle currently has 65,000 miles on it, and the engine breakdown is an internal failure. Having a salvage title should not be a reason to deny the claim especially when its not a cosmetic problem but an engine failure itself. Spending $6,000 - $8,000 on a new engine is completely unaffordable for me. I will appreciate any help you can provide after I have been suffering without car for almost 2 months in these difficult COVID times.
Engine caught fire due to recall not complete, after taking it to mechanic to replace the fire damaged fuel line and engine wire harness, engine somehow lost compression and wouldn't start. Oil level and oil were good, engine started making knocking noise before catching fire. Manufacturer is refusing recall for the engine.
I WAS DRIVING 70 MILES PER HOUR WHEN MY CAR STARTED SLOWING DOWN AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. I COULD NOT GO MORE THAN 40 MILES PER HOUR ON THE FREEWAY. MY ENGINE STARTED MAKING A KNOCKING NOISE THAT EVENTUALLY CUT THE ENGINE OFF. I was told that the engine has a lifetime warranty according to the Hyundai Motor America and Kia Motors America Resolve Engine Litigation [https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/releases/2883]. I am unable to get in contact with Hyundai.
Engine shut off without warning on the freeway
On 06/11/2021, I visited Hyundai Harrisonburg, VA service center to perform some recalls as per the attached documents. I was told that the engine is covered by a lifetime warranty and they didn't charge me anything. They performed recall #162 for the engine problem & installed a special software to monitor the knocking problem. They didn't open the engine to check the crank or the bearing wear. They asked me to keep an eye on the engine and if any thing happens, I could return back immediately to them. Only after 6 days, smoke started to go out of the exhaust and I couldn't drive the vehicle over 40 MPH. I drove the vehicle to them and left it for a week. After a week; when I called them, they told me that the engine needs to be changed with a new one but they couldn't contact Hyundai USA to send them a new engine because the car was driven more than 120K miles as per Hyundai rule (10 years/120K miles). I told the service center manager that it's a lifetime warranty according to the Hyundai Motor America and Kia Motors America Resolve Engine Litigation [https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/releases/2883] He said that Hyundai should approve it to replace the engine and I should contact them for approval. So I contacted NHTSA to get me that approval instead of wasting my time explaining the litigation. I couldn't drive the vehicle since then because of the heavy smoke. I towed it from the Service Center to my home and submitted the complaint. I consulted 2 mechanics who advised me not to drive the vehicle to avoid engine explosion or an accident. It's not safe to drive the vehicle for me and for others in the street. The litigation is very clear that engine warranty is lifetime and the problem that happened to it is what that warranty covers. Smoke and low speed driving mode are some of many symptoms of that issue. I am waiving my right of compensation for towing or rentals and I don't want any compensation other than engine swap ASAP. I want them to tow it back. Thanks
2014 Hyundai Sonata, 65500 miles. Engine seized while driving on the highway. Complete loss of power. Car would not start after the incident. Hyundai dealership won't have time to diagnose the car for 1.5 to 2 months and won't provide a loaner or rental car. Likely several additional months after they look at it to get a new engine.

LUCKILY I WAS ON THE RIGHT LANE CLOSEST TO SHOULDER OF FREEWAY, IT STARTLED & SCARED MY BOYFRIEND & I. I WAS ABLE TO REACT IN TIME TO SAFELY PULLOVER ON SHOULDER WITHOUT HARMING MY BOYFRIEND & I OR ANY OTHER DRIVERS, THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD & COULD'VE HAD DEADLY RESULTS. I QUICKLY SHUT OFF THE ENGINE & RESTARTED SONATA, IT WAS A LITTLE SLUGGISH WHEN TURNING IGNITION ON, CAR TURNED ON & I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME SAFELY. THE NEXT MORNING, MY BOYFRIEND & I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN FELT SLUGGISH TURNING IGNITION ON. I BEGAN DRIVING ON STREETS, AS I WAS TURNING LEFT THE CAR SHUT OFF AGAIN. MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN UNDER AN INCOMPLETE/IN PROCESS RECALL FOR OVER 2 YEARS. I'VE RECEIVED NUMEROUS IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NOTICES FROM HYUNDAI LETTING ME KNOW OVER TIME 'THE FUEL FEED LINE CONNECTING THE LOW PRESSURE FUEL PUMP TO THE DIRECT INJECTION FUEL PUMP IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES COULD DEVELOP A SMALL CRACK OVER TIME DUE TO AMBIENT HEAT IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. A DAMAGED FUEL LINE COULD ALLOW FUEL TO LEAK, INCREASING THE RISK OF AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.' AS PART OF AN PRODUCT 'IMPROVEMENT' CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN TO HAVE A LIGHT SENSOR INSTALLED THAT IS SUPPOSED TO NOTIFY ME SHOULD THERE BE AN ISSUE AS WELL AS SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN, I BELIEVE. I HAVE RECEIVED YET ANOTHER NOTICE TO TAKE MY VEHICLE IN TO SCHEDULE THE RECALL REPAIR. I DO NOT BELIEVE THE PROBLEM IS BEING TAKEN CARE OF. HYUNDAI SHOULD ALLOW OWNERS TO TRADE IN FOR A VEHICLE OF LIKE KIND AND QUALITY SINCE THIS RECALL IS 2+ YEARS IN THE MAKING AND IS INSTILLING FEAR IN ANYONE DRIVING VEHICLES AFFECTED BY THE RECALL. REPEATED NOTICES ALERTING OWNERS OUR CARS COULD CATCH ON FIRE IS NOT A SOLUTION.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, APX 70MPH, OCCASIONALLY MY 2014 SONATA GLS WILL COMPLETELY DIE. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 10 TIMES NOT IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS, ALWAYS WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION USUALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE DASH LIGHTS ALL GO BLACK, RADIO CUTS OFF, AND ENGINE DIES, FOR APX 2-3 SECONDS, AND THEN USUALLY TURNS ITSELF BACK ON LIKE IT NEVER DIED. OCCASIONALLY THOUGH THE CAR WILL NOT TURN ITSELF BACK ON. WHEN IT DIES, THE STEERING ALSO BECOMES VERY STIFF AND THE BRAKES ARE EXTREMELY HARD TO USE. MY CAR HAS ONLY 112XXX MILES AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN SERVICED REGULARLY. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON OR ANY CODES STORED WHEN CHECKED. I'VE CONTACTED HYUNDAI SERVICE CENTER MULTIPLE TIMES. EACH TIME THEY TELL ME THAT THEY CAN'T HELP ME, THERE ARE NO RECALLS AND I SHOULD 'CHECK MY BATTERY CONNECTIONS'. I HAVE, THEY ARE ALL FINE. MY CAR'S CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DID NOT SHOW UP, SO WHEN MY CAR WAS TOWED TO OBRIEN HYUNDAI THEY WERE UNABLE TO IDENTIFY OR DUPLICATE THE ISSUE. I REFUSED TO PICK UP THE CAR AFTER THEY HAD IT FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND AFTER REFUSING TO PICK IT UP, THEY FINALLY WERE ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ENGINE FAILURE. THEY THEN SHARED THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE ENGINE AND THAT HYUNDAI WOULD REPLACE IT FOR FREE. I DROVE THE VEHICLE WITHOUT ISSUE, UNTIL JUNE 3, 2020. MY ENGINE FAILED WHILE IN MOTION ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY TURN AROUND AND PARK MY VEHICLE BACK IN MY COMPLEX PARKING. JUNE 10, 2020 I GOT THE VEHICLE TOWED BACK TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD ME THE ENGINE FAILED AGAIN AND I WILL NEED ANOTHER REPLACEMENT AND HYUNDAI WOULD COVER IT. I HAVE NO TRUST IN HYUNDAI'S REPLACEMENT ENGINES IF THE NEW ONE FROM AUGUST 2019 FAILED IN UNDER A YEAR. I NEVER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE BEFORE THAT POINT IN AUGUST 2019 PERTAINING TO AN ENGINE REPLACEMENT. THIS VEHICLE MODEL IS A DEATH TRAP AND ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN THAT I REFUSE TO JEOPARDIZE MY LIFE AND SAFETY OVER. *TR

I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TO BE REPAIRED. AFTER 3 DAYS I PICKED THE CAR UP, AND THEY SAID THEY REPLACED THE KNOCK SENSOR AND THE CAR WAS FIXED. SINCE THEN THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 MORE TIMES. CAR IS CURRENTLY IN THE SHOP. I STARTED RESEARCHING ON MY OWN, AND I READ THAT THE KNOCK SENSOR WAS AN UPDATE HYUNDAI ADDED AFTER THE RECALL OF THE ENGINES IN THESE CARS. THIS KNOCK SENSOR IS ACTUALLY PROTECTING MY CAR (AND ME) BY PUTTING IT IN 'LIMP MODE' BECAUSE IT SENSES SOMETHING DANGEROUS IN THE ENGINE. I HAVE CONTACTED HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS TO INFORM THEM I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE THIS HAS HAPPENED SO MANY TIMES AND CLEARLY IS'T FIXED, AND I'M SURE IT HAS TO DO WITH THE RECALLS THEY HAVE AND ENGINE FIRES. THEY'VE DONE NOTHING. LAST TIME I WENT TO GET THE CAR THE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP SAID THAT MANY PEOPLE WERE HAVING ISSUES, BUT HYUNDAI DOESN'T ALLOW THEM TO ACTUALLY FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY HAVE TO DO WORK-AROUND FIXES INSTEAD OF THE ACTUAL REPAIRS NEEDED. THE MANGER SAID HE PREDICTS THAT "THERE WILL BE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT BECAUSE OF HYUNDAI NOT DOING ANYTHING TO ACTUALLY FIX THIS ENGINE ISSUE". I DON'T KNOW WHO TO TURN TO, BUT I' AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR. I DON'T WANT TO BE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE ENGINE CATCH FIRE. I'M CURRENTLY PREGNANT AND IT HAS BEEN VERY STRESSFUL DEALING WITH THIS ISSUE. I FEAR THE DEALERSHIP WILL DISABLE THE KNOCK SENSOR SO THAT IT STOPS PUTTING THE ENGINE ON LIMP MODE AND THEN I WILL HAVE A FIRE. I ALSO FEAR THAT THE KNOCK SENSOR MAY NOT WORK CORRECTLY NEXT TIME AND THE ENGINE MAY CATCH FIRE. I NEED THE ENGINE FIXED. I HOPE BY SUBMITTING THIS COMPLAINT IT WILL HELP GET THIS ENGINE PROBLEM SOLVED FOR ME AND CONSUMERS.

THE (MIL) MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON AND MY CAR JUST SUDDENLY STOPPED RUNNING WHEN I PULLED UP TO A STOP SIGN, WHEN I BRAKED FOR STOP SIGN TO MAKE A LEFT TURN,WHILE DRIVING, LEAVING WALMART SHOPPING CENTER. ENGINE OVER HEATS AND WON'T START FOR SEVERAL HOURS. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THE ENGINE HAS BEEN RUNNING FOR 5 MINUTES OR AN HOUR OR MORE. WHEN TURNING THE KEY THE ENGINE CLICKS AND WON'T START. YOU HAVE TO TURN THE KEY ON SEVERAL TIMES (WHEN THE ENGINE IS COOL) TO HAVE THE ENGINE START RUNNING. I HAVE READ THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN UNDER RECALL BY HYUNDAI, BUT MY VIN NUMBER IS EXCLUDED ACCORDING TO ONLINE INFORMATION. I HAVE RECEIVED RECALL NOTICES ON ISSUES AND BELIEVE MY CAR'S VIN SHOULD HAVE ALSO BEEN ON THE ENGINE RECALL LIST.

THIS IS AN ON-GOING ISSUE. ORIGINALLY BEGAN MID MARCH OF 2019. THUS FAR ALL HAVE BEEN COVERED BY WARRANTY. LUCKILY, I'D JUST GOTTEN OFF OF I-95 WHEN THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS BEGAN. THE ENGINE LIGHT FLASHED, CAR ONLY ACCELERATED TO APPX 30 MPH, HESITATED AND SPUTTERED, AS IF IT WANTED TO STALL. ON THE OCCASION IN MARCH MY CAR, WITH APPX 82,000 MILES, WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. ON, OR ABOUT, APRIL 5TH I WAS TOLD ONE OF TWO ISSUES ARE INVOLVED. ONE WAS THE WIRING HARNESS (KNOCK SENSOR) OR ENGINE REPLACEMENT IS REQUIRED. HYUNDAI AUTHORIZED THE KNOCK SENSOR REPLACEMENT AND I RECEIVED THE CAR ON APRIL 14TH. I F I RECALL CORRECTLY, THE KNOCK SENSOR WAS A RECALL ISSUE. ALL WAS SEEMINGLY FINE UNTIL JUNE 10TH. AT THAT TIME, THE SAME ISSUES I DESCRIBED ABOVE HAPPENED, INCLUDING THAT THE SPEEDOMETER INDICATED I WAS TRAVELING AT 60 MPH WHEN I WAS PROBABLY TRAVELLING AT 30-35 MPH. MY CAR WAS TOWED TO HYUNDAI, AGAIN, AND I AM NOW AWAITING THEIR DIAGNOSIS. I DON'T FEEL ANYTHING LESS THAN ENGINE REPLACEMENT WILL BE ACCEPTABLE AT THIS TIME.

I DROVE INTO A PARKING LOT AND MY CAR COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN ON ME. IT WOULD NOT TURN ON OR START AT ALL. I HAD TO USE MY CAR INSURANCE TO HAVE MY CAR TOWED TO MY FRIENDS HOUSE BECAUSE THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP WAS NOT WITHIN THE TOWING RANGE TO BE COVERED BY MY INSURANCE. I CALLED THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE NEXT DAY, 4/25/19. THE DEALERSHIP CAME AND TOWED MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. AFTER THE INSPECTION, I WAS NOTIFIED THAT I SUFFERED AN ENGINE FAILURE AND THE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED. I WAS PROVIDED WITH A RENTAL CAR, WHICH I CAN USE UNTIL MY CAR IS FIXED, BUT HYUNDAI WILL NEED TO SEND THEM A NEW ENGINE SO THEY DONT KNOW YET WHEN THE CAR WILL BE FIXED. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE HOSES, GASKETS; ANYTHING THAT WASN'T EITHER A BLACK SURFACE OR METAL BECAUSE THE WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER THOSE. THE ESTIMATE FOR ME TO PAY WOULD BE AROUND $300. ALSO, DURING THE INSPECTION FOR THE ENGINE, I WAS TOLD THE AXELS WERE LEAKING AND THOSE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED INCLUDING ALL OF THE COMPONENTS OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM. I WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE $50 DEDUCTIBLE AND THE WARRANTY WOULD COVER THE REST. WHEN THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN WHILE IT WAS STILL MOVING WAS VERY UNSAFE, ESPECIALLY DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC.

WAS DRIVING MY CAR AT 60 MPH ON FREEWAY AND SUDDENLY CAR'S SPEED DROPPED TO 20 MPH WITH CHECK ENGINE LIGHT (MIL) BLINKING. ALSO CAR WAS HESITATING AND WASN'T GOING BEYOND 20 MPH AFTER THAT. THIS HAPPENED ON LAST FRIDAY 4/19/2019. I GOT MY CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP (FRED BEANS HYUNDAI OF DOYLESTOWN, PA) ON 4/20/2019. ON 4/13/19 I DROVE TO PA. WHEN I WAS ON MY WAY BACK RIGHT BEFORE THE COMMODORE BARRY BRIDGE I GOT INTO THE RIGHT LANE EXIT 4 ON TO 322 EAST TOWARDS NJ WHEN MY CAR DROPPED GEAR AND THEN MY CAR ENGINE SHUT OFF WHILE IN MOTION GOING ABOUT 40MPH WITHOUT WARNING. WHEN I LOOKED AT THE DASHBOARD ALL OF MY LIGHTS WERE ON, THE CHECK ENGINE, OIL, TRANSMISSION,ETC. LUCKILY I WAS NOT ON THE BRIDGE YET AND PULLED INTO THE SHOULDER LANE. I TRIED TO START MY CAR AGAIN AND IT SHUDDERED THEN CAME ON AND REMAINED ON FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS BEFORE IT DIED YET AGAIN. I HAD TO GET MY CAR TOWED TO MT. LAUREL NJ WHERE A MECHANIC TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY CAR THAT THEY COULD FIND AND THAT ALL THEY COULD FIND WAS THAT I WAS A LITTLE LOW ON OIL. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPEN WITH THIS VEHICLE. THE FIRST TIME THIS OCCURRED WAS ABOUT A YEAR AGO, I WAS PULLING OUT OF MY DRIVE WAY WHEN MY CAR SUDDENLY DIED AND JUMPED OUT OF GEAR EVEN WHEN IT WAS IN PARK THE CAR WOULD NOT STAY STILL. I HAD TO PUSH THE CAR TO THE CURB WHERE I APPLIED THE HANDBRAKE. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO BURNS HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP NEAR MT. LAUREL WHERE THEY TOLD ME THAT MY FRONT AXLE HAD PULLED MY CAR OUT OF GEAR, WHICH DID NOT EXPLAIN WHY THE ENGINE DIED. I HAD TO REPLACE THE AXLE AGAIN. WHEN I TOLD BURNS HYUNDAI THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE THAT INCLUDED THE ENGINE AND THE TRANSMISSION WHICH APPLIED TO MY SITUATION THEY TOLD ME MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT ON THE LIST OF CARS WITH THAT SPECIFIC RECALL WHEN I CLEARLY TOLD THEM THAT IT WAS HAPPENING TO MY CAR. THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND THAT THE CAR "SEEMED FINE" AS FAR AS THEY COULD TELL. CLEARLY THE CAR IS NOT FINE REGARDLESS WHAT THESE MECHANICS ARE SAYING OTHERWISE I WOULD NOT BE BREAKING DOWN WHILE DRIVING. BEING AT 87,348 MILES THIS CAR SHOULD NOT BE EXPERIENCING A BREAKDOWN WITHOUT WARNING TWICE WITHIN TWO YEARS

THE SOFTWARE UPDATE PER HYUNDAIS "953" SERVICE CAMPAIGN, WHEN ACTIVATED, REDUCES ENGINE PERFORMANCE WHICH COULD LEAD TO ACCIDENTS (DUE TO INSUFFICIENT ACCELERATION, ETC.). I HAD THE RECENT ENGINE SOFTWARE UPDATE PER HYUNDAI'S 953 CAMPAIGN. ON 3/22/19, I EXITED A HIGHWAY AND SLOWED DOWN PRIOR TO MERGING ONTO THE NEXT ROAD. I NEEDED TO ACCELERATE, HOWEVER MY ENGINE BOGGED AND HESITATED SIGNIFICANTLY. AS SUCH, ANOTHER CAR QUICKLY APPROACHING HAD TO BREAK HEAVILY TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH MY CAR. I LOOKED DOWN AND OBSERVED MY ENGINE LIGHT FLASHING. I TOOK THE CAR IN TO ACTION HYUNDAI (MILLVILLE, NJ), AND THEY STATED THAT THE NEWLY INSTALLED SOFTWARE HAD DETECTED ISSUES WITH MY ENGINE AND AUTOMATICALLY PLACED MY ENGINE IN THIS LOW-POWER MODE. I HAVE SINCE LEARNED THAT I WILL BE RECEIVING A WARRANTY ENGINE REPLACEMENT.

WHEN ACCELERATING PAST 3500 RPMS THERE IS A CLANGING SOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE AND YOU CAN'T ACCELERATE ANYMORE. THERE HAS BEEN AT TIMES A LARGE PLUME OF WHITE THICK SMOKE COMING FROM THE TAIL PIPE WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE.

HAVING TO ADD AT LEAST 2 QUARTS EVERY 2-3 WEEKS. WHILE DRIVING, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, TOOK CAR TO MECHANIC IMMEDIATELY WHO THEN EXPLAINED THERE WAS SO MUCH SLUDGE ON THE PLUGS (CAUSING MISFIRES AND ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON) FROM BUILT UP OIL THAT ALL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AFTER REPLACING THE PLUGS AND OIL CHANGE, WHITE SMOKE CONTINUES TO EXPELL FROM EXHAUST. MECHANIC ADVISED THE ENGINE WILL NOT LAST MUCH LONGER AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED/REBUILT.

I NOTICED AS I WAS USING MY TURN SIGNAL AS I WAS GETTING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 5:00 IN THE MORNING THAT MY HEADLIGHTS HAD APPEARED TO GO OUT. A FEW SECONDS LATER THEY CAME BACK ON. I THOUGHT MAYBE I WAS SEEING THINGS BUT THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN AS I WAS SIGNALING TO CHANGE LANES. FOR THE REST OF THE 25 MILES TO GET TO WORK ON A BUSY HIGHWAY I STOPPED USING MY TURN SIGNAL FOR FEAR THAT MY HEADLIGHTS WOULD NOT COME BACK ON. I TOOK BY CAR TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE HEADLIGHT ISSUE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ISSUE FIXED. I WAS CALLED WHILE MY CAR WAS STILL AT THE DEALER THAT THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE HEADLIGHT ISSUE AND THAT THEY REPLACED SOME PART THAT HAD TO DO WITH THE OIL. OF COURSE WITH THE ENGINE ONLY BEING 2 YEARS OLD I HAD TO PAY. I PAID $458 AND WHEN I LEFT THE DEALER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS OFF. I LET MY NEPHEW BORROW MY CAR FOR A WEEK AND WHEN I PICKED IT UP THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS BACK ON AND WAS STILL HAVING THE HEADLIGHT ISSUE WHEN SIGNALING. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE SAME ISSUES LOOKED AT AGAIN. A WEEK GOES BY AND I HEAR NOTHING BUT I DO GET AN AUTOMATED VOICEMAIL FROM THE DEALER REGARDING A GREAT INCENTIVE TO TRADE IN MY CAR FOR A NEWER MODEL. NO THANKS!! I'M DONE WITH HYUNDAI. I CALL THE DEALER TO CHECK ON THE STATUS OF MY CAR TWICE AND GET NO ANSWER. I DRIVE TO THE DEALER TO SPEAK TO SOMEONE. ONCE AGAIN I AM TOLD THEY CANNOT REPLICATE THE HEADLIGHT ISSUE AND DIAGNOSTIC SHOWS NO ISSUES BUT IT COULD BE THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH. THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON BECAUSE THE CAM SHIFT SENSOR WENT BAD. NOW I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY THIS WAS NOT FOUND THE FIRST TIME I BROUGHT THE CAR IN. SO NOW I'M TOLD THE SHOP FOREMAN WAS OUT ALL WEEK AND THEY ARE WAITING FOR HIM TO LOOK AT MY CAR TO SEE IF HE CAN FIGURE OUT THE HEADLIGHT ISSUE. I'M REALLY IRRITATED AT THIS POINT AND WILL BE TRADING THIS CAR IN AND IT WON'T BE WITH HYUNDAI.

ON JUNE 15, 2018, MY CAR CAUGHT FIRE WHILE DRIVING DOWN INTERSTATE 70, NEAR GREENVILLE, ILLINOIS. THERE WAS NO WARNING, JUST A NOISE SIMILAR TO A LOOSE PIECE OF PLASTIC. BLACK SMOKE BILLOWED FROM BEHIND THE VEHICLE, AND AS I ATTEMPTED TO PULL OVER, THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN. ONCE WE WERE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, THE FIRE WAS VISIBLE FROM UNDER THE ENGINE. WE CONTACTED 911. THE CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS. THIS CAR HAD VARIOUS RECALLS, ALL DEEMED 'RESOLVED' BY HYUNDAI. THEY DID EXTEND THE WARRANTY DUE TO THE KNOWN ISSUES. I HAVE REACHED OUT TO THEM DAILY AND HAVE NOT HEARD BACK.

THE CAR WAS TOKEN THE DEALER, WHERE IT WAS BOUGHT, SINCE THEY HAD TOLD US THEY HAD SOME REPAIRING TO DO BUT THE CAR STAYED THE SAME. THE ENGINE MAKES A VERY UNPLEASANT NOISE, EVERY TIME. WITH THE STEERING WHEEL, WHILE TURNING LEFT, IT SEMI GETS STUCK. IN ORDER FOR THAT TO NOT HAPPEN, YOU BASICALLY HAVE TURN IT RIGHT AWAY. IT IS AT VERY HIGH RISK DUE TO THE FACT THAT IF IT WOULD MANAGE TO GET STUCK, IT MAY CAUSE AN UNNECESSARY ACCIDENT. WHEN IT COMES TO THE WHEELS, EVERY TIME IT TURNS LEFT OR RIGHT IT MAKES A VERY ROCKY NOISE. WE HAVE CALLED TIME AND TIME FOR A REPARATION OR TO AT LEAST HAVE SOMETHING DONE. NO ONE HAS SEEMED TO REALLY CARE NOR CATCH THEIR ATTENTION.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING 80 MPH, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE WHILE DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED, THE GEAR SHIFTER WAS NOT REGISTERING A POSITION SUCH AS DRIVE OR PARK. AT TIMES, THE VEHICLE FAILS TO DOWNSHIFT. THE CONTACT CALLED DRIVETIME USED CARS (8341 INDIANA AVE, RIVERSIDE, CA 92504, (951) 353-2277) WHERE SHE RECENTLY PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND WAS ADVISED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO PEP BOYS IN SAN BERNARDINO, CA WHERE IT WAS AWAITING DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. I WENT FOR AN OIL CHANGE, AND THEY LISTENED TO MY ENGINE FOR THE ENGINE RECALL. I TOLD THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT IT WAS THE NOISIEST STARTING CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED. I BELIEVE THEY OUT AN OIL ADDITIVE IN IT TO QUIET MY ENGINE BEFORE TESTING IT TO TRY TO AVOID REPLACING THE ENGINE. IT IS SUDDENLY THE QUIETEST STARTING CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED. THIS UPSETS ME GREATLY, AS I BELIEVE THEY ARE NOT HONORING THE ENGINE RECALL BY USING AN ENGINE QUIETING ADDITIVE. I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON CARS FOR OVER 40 YEARS. I AM VERY JN HAPPY THAT THIS IS HAPPENING.

HYUNDAI SONATA ENGINE FAILURE. I WAS DRIVING AND MY CAR STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I PUT IT IN PARK AND PUT MY HAZARDS ON. I PROCEEDED TO START THE CAR AND WHEN I DID, THE CAR CAUGHT ON FIRE. SMELLED LIKE WIRES ON FIRE. HYUNDAI WAS NOTIFIED AND MY CAR WAS TOWED AND FIXED AT THE DEALERSHIP. IT TOOK ABOUT 6 WEEKS TO FIX. TO MY DISAPPOINMENT, HYUNDAI IS ONLY OFFERING 12K MILES OR ONE YEAR WARRANTY. THIS CAR HAS HAD SEVERAL RECALLS AND I HAVE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER FOR EVERY ONE OF THEM. I SPENT 30K ON THIS CAR (HYUNDAI SONATA 2.0T) LOVE THE LOOK OF IT BUT NOT RELIABLE. I HAVE SENT THEM A LETTER TO ASK FOR A BETTER WARRANTY ON THE "NEW" ENGINE THEY REPLACED.

TAKATA RECALL - CAR IS BLOWING OUT SMOKE - IN 700 MILES IT HAS LOST 2 QUARTS OF OIL, IT HAS UNDER 50K MILES, IT IS COVERED UNDER 2 DIFFERENT RECALLS THRU HYUNDAI BUT THEY REFUSE TO REPLACE THE ENGINE, WHEN YOU TRY TO ACCELERATE - THE CAR WILL HESITATE AND THEN ALL OF SUDDEN BLOW SMOKE OUT THE BACK - SO MUCH THAT YOU THINK THE CAR IS GOING TO CATCH ON FIRE, WE HAVE HAD IT IN THE DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES ALREADY - CONTACTED THEM OTHER TIMES IN BETWEEN. NOW WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE AT JUST 1 RPM SMOKE COMES OUT THE BACK CAR STARTS SHAKING LIKE ITS GOING TO STALL OUT CHECK ENGINGE LIGHT COMES ON - A FEW SECONDS LATER BIG CLOUD OF SMOKE COMES OUT BACK AND CAR WILL THEN MOVE LEAVING TRAILS OF SMOKE BEHIND. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF. HYUNDAI SAID UNLESS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON - IT WONT MATTER. THEY JUST WANT US TO DO A OIL CONSUMPTION TEST - THE ENGINE IS MAKING A KNOCKING NOISE. STEERING WANDERS ON A STRAIGHT ROAD. DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. MORE NOTICEABLE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, BUT ALSO AT CITY SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE REQUIRES CONSTANT CORRECTION TO MAINTAIN A STRAIGHT TRACK. THE CAR SIMPLY 'WANDERS' OR 'DRIFTS' LEFT AND RIGHT, WITH NO REAL 'CENTERED' FEEL TO THE STEERING. MAINTAINING A STRAIGHT TRACK IS IMPOSSIBLE AND REQUIRES CONSTANT ATTENTION AND CORRECTION. THE STEERING WANDER CREATES HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS, ESPECIALLY ON WET OR ICY SURFACES AND DRIVER FATIGUE, WHICH POSES A PUBLIC SAFETY HAZARD. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP OVER 10 TIMES FOR RESOLUTION, AND THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN INFORMED TWICE. THE DEALERSHIP AND MANUFACTURER DENIES THERE IS A PROBLEM AND STATES THAT THE INDIVIDUAL DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE AND/OR THAT THE INDIVIDUAL WOULD HAVE TO WAIT FOR A RECALL. HYUNDAI US HAS NOT BEEN RESPONSIVE TO COMPLAINTS. CRUISE CONTROL HAS FAILED TO OPERATE SINCE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW. HYUNDAI HAS ATTEMPTED 3 REPAIRS AND ARE NOW DENYING CLAIMS.

I OWN A NEW 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA, AND MY MAIN CONCERN FROM WHAT I RECENTLY HAVE RESEARCHED IS THAT SOME OF THESE VEHICLES ARE PRONE TO MAJOR MOTOR AND POWER TRAIN PROBLEMS, THAT CAN LEAD TO FATALITIES. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE NHTSA HAS BEEN NOTIFIED OF THESE PROBLEMS, AND THERE IS A CURRENT CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT PENDING. WHAT I'D LIKE TO ASK IS, WHY A RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED BY THE AGENCY, GIVEN THE GRAVE NATURE THAT ONE OF THESE MOTORS COULD POTENTIALLY SEIZE WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEED AND CAN VERY WELL LEAD TO FATALITIES. A PERSONAL NOTE: WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. IN AUGUST 2014, IT STALLED ONCE, WHILE DRIVING AT 5-10 MILES MPH, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. IT HAS NOT HAPPENED EVER SINCE.

AS I WAS EXCITING THE FREEWAY I BEGAN TO HEAR A "KNOCKING" SOUND, AS I MADE THE TURN ON TO THE STREET THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND ALL THE LIGHTS ON MY DASHBOARD CAME ON. SINCE I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET I ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE CAR AND AFTER INITIALLY STARTING UP IT THEN ABRUPTLY TURN OFF ONCE AGAIN ABOUT 20 SECONDS LATER. AT THIS POINT I MANAGAGED TO PULL INTO A PARKING LOT WITH THE LEFT OVER MOMENTUM. HAD TO GET IT TOWED TO THE NEWREST HYUNDAI DEALER. AFTER THEY INSPECTED IT, THEY DETERMINED MY CRANKSHAFT HAD SEIZED AND 2 AND HALF WEEKS LATER HERE I AM STILL WAITING FOR AN ENGINE THEY SAY IS ON BACKORDER.

I HEARD A GRINDING ENGINE NOISE FROM THE CAR. I TOOK IT IN TO ASK WHAT THE TERRRIBLE SOUND WAS, I WAS TOLD THE COMPUTER PULLED A "INTERNAL ENGINE FAILURE" CODE AND IT WAS NO LONGER ABLE TO BE DRIVEN. I WAS TOLD THEY HAD A RECALL ON EARLIER MODELS BUT NOT THE YEAR 2014. I WAS TOLD IT NEEDED A NEW ENGINE, METALLIC FLAKES WERE FOUND UPON INVESTIGATION AT HYUNDAI. I WAS TOLD IF THE CAR CONTINUED TO BE DRIVEN IT HAD A HIGH RISK OF SEIZING UP DURING USE WHICH WOULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I WAS TOLD IT WAS RECALLED THEN LATER TOLD THAT YEAR 2014 HAD NOT YET BEEN RECALLED, BUT THAT IT WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THEY HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE FOR 2 MONTHS NOW AND ARE STATING I NEED TO CALL THE CONSUMER PROTECTION AGENCY AND NOTIFY THEM OF THE SITUATION TO ENCOURAGE A RECALL.

APPROXIMATELY 4 PM ON AUGUST 24, 2015 DRIVING MY 2014 SONATA LIMITED WITH 11450 MILES ONTO THE LOCAL FREEWAY ON RAMP, CAR STALLED AND TOTAL LOSS OF STEERING OCCURRED. I HAD JUST ENOUGH TIME TO GET THE VEHICLE TO SIDE AND AVOID POSSIBLE COLLISION FROM BEHIND. HAD ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING, AND WAS DRIVING NORMAL FOR THE CLEAR ROAD DRIVING. WEATHER WAS GOOD, CLEAR AND SUNNY, UPPER 80F. TRAFFIC WAS STARTING TO BUILD FOR RUSH HOUR AND HAD THIS OCCURRED 5 MINUTES LATER MAJOR COLLISION WOULD HAVE OCCURRED DUE TO TRAFFIC CONGESTION ON FREEWAY DURING THAT TIME. AT THE TIME OF OCCURRENCE IT FELT AS IF I HAD A FLAT TIRE WITH THE FRONT WHEELS WANTING TO TURN IN DIRECTION OF WEAKER TIRE SIDE. COMPLETE AND TOTAL LOSS OF POWER BOTH ELECTRICAL AND ENGINE WERE IMMEDIATE. I PLACED SHIFTER IN NEUTRAL AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE MAINTAINING SOME MOMENTUM TO GET CAR TO SIDE OF ROAD WHILE TRYING TO RESTART IT. VEHICLE STARTED BUT I DID NOT HAVE ANY STEERING CONTROL AT ALL. HYUNDAI BLUELINK ROADSIDE ASSISTANT THEN CALLED AND SUMMONED A TOW TRUCK TO TAKE IT TO LOCAL DEALER FOR WARRANTY SERVICE AND REPAIR. SERVICE TECHNICIAN HAS STATED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. NO INDICATION AS TO WHAT CAUSED THE FAULT TO OCCUR AND TO WHETHER THE CAUSE OF THE FAULT HAS BEEN DETERMINED.

AT APPROXIMATELY 5PM ON OCTOBER 10TH 2014 I PULLED OUT OF A PARKING LOT IN HARRISBURG, NC. WHEN THE CAR REACHED 15 MPH IT DID NOT SHIFT (THE CAR IS EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WITH SHIFTRONIC MANUAL CONTROLS) AND I HAD TO SHIFT THE CAR MANUALLY INTO SECOND GEAR AND EACH SUCCESSIVE GEAR. AFTER DOING SO I NOTICED THE CAR HAD TURNED OFF WHILE DRIVING. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD WITH NO INCIDENT AND RESTART THE CAR. THE FOLLOWING DAY, I NOTICED CLICKING UNDER THE HOOD AND TOOK IT INTO THE DEALER. AFTER THEIR EXAMINATION THEY DETERMINED THE ENGINE HAD A DEFECT. THEY ARE REPLACING THE ENGINE. *TR
