Manufacturer has refused engine replacement under federal KSDS recall settlement without providing causation proof. Owner has maintenance records. Request NHTSA compliance review.

Jan 8, 2026

Manufacturer is refusing recall engine replacement alleging neglect without proof of causation. Vehicle has documented maintenance. Denial appears improper under recall compliance law.

Jan 2, 2026

Cylinders in the engine are misfiring causing car to shake. Pistons in the engine are having trouble keeping the air compressed so psi to continue to decrease causing the misfire.

Dec 29, 2025 Fire

My 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport Limited 2.4 has a known engine defect causing excessive oil consumption. The vehicle was at an authorized Hyundai dealership for the oil consumption test and had been approved for a new engine replacement. Prior to the repair, I completed $2,300 in maintenance, specifically an oil combustion cleaning and spark plug replacement, which the dealership said was required to perform the oil consumption test. While the vehicle was in the dealership’s custody, it caught fire on 12/19/2025 at World Hyundai Matteson. No one was injured, but the car was destroyed. This occurred while the vehicle was under warranty repair, creating a serious safety risk. I am submitting this complaint to document the fire and the associated safety issue with this engine defect.

Dec 19, 2025

My car steering is locking up while driving on highway and regular roads. Resulting almost in not being able to control and crash. I also had a recall for my engine which was already replaced and now having same issue with oil burning and not leaking.

Dec 17, 2025

Car consuming EXCESSIVE Oil. Oil changes went from lasting 6-7k miles, to less than 4k miles, to less than 2k miles within a year. Checked for leaks, nothing found. Here is the breakdown, I added more oil when the oil lights would flash on. : 12/06/24 FULL OIL CHANGE Mileage: 80,735 6/11/25 FULL OIL CHANGE 86,164 miles 10/6/25 1 qt  89,000 miles 10/10/25 FULL OIL CHANGE 90,121 miles 1 qt 11/30/25 91,550 miles 1 qt 12/11/25  92,700 miles Hyundai is AWARE that this is an ongoing issue - they should legally be required to fix this whether a car has a warranty or not. Bad for the engine and engine replacements aren't cheap

Dec 6, 2025

My car is blowing a large amount of white smoke due to the head gasket being cracked, I was quoted 2 grand to fix it. The car is not old enough to need a new head gasket, this is completely due to how the car manufactured and I have seen many other reports of this, there should be a recall and this should be fixed free of charge.

Nov 29, 2025

e vehicle is burning approximately 2 quarts of oil every month with no external leaks. This indicates severe internal oil consumption, which is a known defect in Hyundai’s Theta II 2.4 GDI engines. I discovered oil inside the VVT solenoid electrical connector and on other wiring, which shows oil is traveling through the engine harness. This causes hesitation, rough running, and the risk of sudden engine power loss. The vehicle feels unsafe to drive because the oil level drops quickly, and the engine could seize or stall while driving. Hyundai vehicles of this generation have a history of excessive oil consumption, piston ring failures, and engine fires, and I believe my vehicle is experiencing the same defect. This is a serious safety concern.

Nov 29, 2025

While driving my 2017 Hyundai Sonata, the engine suddenly began making a loud knocking noise and the vehicle entered "limp mode" The check engine light was blinking, I took the car to a very close autozone and the check engine light came on with code P1326 (pricture upload files), which is directly related to the known KSDS connecting rod bearing defect. This issue is part of Hyundai’s safety recalls and engine warranty extensions. After that, I called Hyundai directly (reference number for that call #XXX). A kind young woman informed me that my car had been through "Service Campaign 953" and successfully completed a "Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) Software Update." Thanks to this, she explained that my car is under the "Hyundai TXXI warranty" and that, given the noise I was hearing along with the "P1326" code, it was very likely that my car qualified for a free engine replacement. She then scheduled an appointment for me at the nearest Hyundai dealership for the following morning. After more than two weeks of inspection, the dealer confirmed that the engine has internal damage and needs a complete replacement due to rod bearing failure. This is the exact defect addressed in Hyundai’s safety campaigns. However, Hyundai Corporate is refusing to cover the engine replacement because the vehicle exceeded its mileage limit, even though the engine failure is clearly caused by the known safety-related defect. The dealer acknowledged the problem and documented everything, but Hyundai is denying proper safety recall-related coverage. This puts my safety and the safety of others at risk, the vehicle is currently disabled and undrivable at the dealership due to the defect. Hyundai is only offering a buyback or a small cash settlement instead of performing the necessary safety repair. I am filing this complaint for many reasons but mainly because the refusal to replace the defective engine, despite the recall-related code P1326 and confirmed bearing failure. I am filing a complaint regarding Hyundai Motor America’s handling of my engine-related safety issue, buyback process, and rental reimbursement. My vehicle was towed to Elder Hyundai for a suspected engine failure. Elder Hyundai informed me that my car was covered under an engine recall campaign and that they would submit a request for free repair. Shortly afterward, Hyundai Motor America notified me that they would not perform the repair and that I was being forced into the buyback process under a Settlement Agreement Release (SAR). Elder Hyundai refused to provide me a loaner vehicle because I was not proceeding with repairs, despite the issue being part of an engine recall. They also refused to give me the repair order report for my records and refused to let me retrieve my personal items from my vehicle unless I paid a diagnostic fee. Hyundai Motor America told me I was covered under them for this fee, yet Elder Hyundai still refused. Regarding transportation, I was initially told Hyundai does not reimburse Turo rentals due to concerns about “fake receipts.” Because of my budget and age, Turo was the only rental option I could afford. After escalating, a supervisor approved reimbursement for my Turo rentals, but as of today I have not received any reimbursement. I am a school teacher with a two-hour commute each day and I have [XXX] twin toddlers. I had to use rent and bill money to pay for the rentals based on assurances that reimbursement would be processed within a week. I submitted all receipts, but my new case manager claims he has no record of them, further delaying reimbursement. I completed and returned all SAR buyback documents on November 15th, yet I have received no update on payment or processing. This entire ordeal has put me at financial risk, including potential job loss and housing instability. Hyundai’s delays and mishandling of this safety-related case have severely impacted my livelihood. I ask that you please review HMA’s action INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMA

My car started using a lot of oil,one day it just started jerking and lost speed had to change the spark plugs after that I was constantly putting oil in it and changing the spark plugs every 2 weeks

Nov 11, 2025

Engine is burning oil. Ticking sound when engine is idling.

Nov 7, 2025

We bought the car 9/27 was told the car past the dealer inspections. The cars oil was checked and i am sure it was changed and all prior to us. We drove it home and she has drove it to school. On 10/15 my husband did a routine oil check and it was over 2 qts low. He did a complete oil change and changed the pcv valve and as of yesterday it has used another 1 gt. This car was just bought 8900 and now i am assuming it needs rebuilt or new engine. I would like for this to be reimbursed. This is outrageous. When we reported the prob it had 149000 miles on it and Hydunai gives to 150000. I need this issue to be fixed

Having engine issues with Hyundai Sonata (2017) have taken to dealership for repairs since purchase of vehicle (used) in August 2019. Vehicle available for inspection. Safety of others as well as self by engine failure while refueling, causing driver to be unable to move vehicle. Engine problem confirmed at dealership in April 2025. Issue addressed with Hyundai National Consumer Affairs to seek adequate replacement of engine and components. On 14 May 2025, request was denied. Check engine lamp illuminated on 1 March 2021 the 1st time, 5 June 2023 for 2nd time and 21 April 2025 for the 3rd and final time.

I am the original owner of a 2017 Hyundai Sonata with the oil consumption defect Hyundai is well aware of. For years I have been adding a quart of oil every thousand miles and had my spark plugs replaced three times in two years now. Why am I not included in the recall so I can have the repairs done free of charge? The dealer wanted me to start having them monitor my oil consumption first which will cost me around seven hundred dollars for something they already know is defective. I submitted repair bills for the spark plugs to Hyundai around a year ago, but they would not reimburse. This is a safety issue as car starts to run badly with fouled plugs.

I have just purchased this vehicle from Jones Nissan in Savannah, TN September 27, 2025 for my daughter's 18th birthday. I was told the car passed all inspections etc and was sold the car same day. We checked the oil before leaving and oil was good. Within 45 miles we came home and my husband checked the car and the oil was down half quart. We didn't think anything of it and he did complete oil change. Last night my daughter comes in and my husband checks her oil almost 3 quarts low. There are no leaks nothing we can find. This is absolutely absurd this was a car for my 18-yr old daughter to go to college and back. There are no lights that come on to tell you it is low or nothing. This is completely uncalled for and Hyundai needs to replace or correct this issue. This could cause her to be stranded or hurt if this motor was to lock up.

Oct 12, 2025

I noticed my oil was pretty much empty at one point. I don't know how long it had been empty but I had been driving the car for a long time. But I usually do my oil changes every 5000 miles so the fact that the oil was empty is definitely not a good sign. I did an oil change and replaced the drain plug in case that was the issue. I checked for leaks and there weren't any. After probably a couple thousand miles, the oil was out again. I took it to a dealership and the guy at the service desk said "I shouldn't tell you this, but a lot of them have that problem. You should get rid of it before the engine fails." Hyundai knows that it's an issue but they refuse to fix it or do a recall. It consumes oil like crazy and there's even a Facebook group called Hyundai oil consumption recall with about 5000 people in it. If the oil in the engine drains to empty, the engine could seize up and put people in danger. No warning lights have come on when the oil has run out.

Oct 11, 2025

MY 2017 Hyundai Sonata has excessive engine oil consumption. Despite multiple inspections and tests performed by Hyundai dealerships in 2023, as well as PCV replacement by a licensed independent mechanic, the vehicle continues to consume approximately 1 quart of oil every 60-100 miles. No warning lights appeared, but this persistent consumption created a safety risk ,as low oil levels can lead to engine damage or failure while driving, endangering myself and passengers, and others on the road. The issue has been confirmed through oil consumption tests at Hyundai dealerships, and it remains unresolved despite attempted repairs. The problem is verifiable and reproducible through oil level checks and documented service history.

HYUNDAI OIL CONSUMPTION RECALL. MY 2017 HYUNDAI SONATA BURNING OIL I CONSTANTLY SCHEDULE OIL CHANGES. WHEN WILL NOTICE FOR REPAIR BE SENT TO MY ADDRESS TO FIX THIS ISSUE. MY DAUGHTER DRIVES THIS VEHICLE ALSO. SERIOUS ISSUE NEEDS TO TAKEN SERIOUSLY.

Purchased the vehicle and immediately noticed a drip in the driveway. I was concerned so I started checking the dip stick. I booked a diagnostic appointment with a Hyundai Service Center. I wanted to be sure I purchased a quality vehicle. Upon what i thought was a complete diagnostic, a cracked oil pan was discovered. I agreed to purchase and pay out of pocket, everything else had checked out. I was told I could drive while I waited for the pan to come in, service was scheduled. The car never made it back. I continued to check the dipstick but while driving on a very busy interstate, the engine light went on and lost power. I barely managed to get to the breakdown lane. A complete safety hazard. I was towed to the closest garage where the owner suggested he see’s 3-4 of these a week. He would not touch it, have it towed to Hyundai. I paid for another diagnostic and now a flat bed tow. Key Hyundai of Salem NH accepted the vehicle. I paid another $498 to have an “engine tear-down” send a detailed finding report to Corporate. I called Corporate and filled my own case number. I was denied by Corporate, I was told I was a subsequent owner. The dealership didn’t match, I’m denied because the engine didn’t seize because of Rod issue. Well Hyundai is praying upon consumers. They knowingly initiated the KDS Recall and installed sensors to place a vehicle in “Limp Mode” so the rod isn’t the issue and they deny coverage. I paid a private mechanic verify cylinder 3 has low compression. Had the car not gone into “Limp Mode” the rod bearings would have failed.

Oct 1, 2025

My car is needing an oil change almost every 3 weeks at this point. Mechanics say there is no leak and there may be a recall for GDI engines that are burning oil very fast. This is a reoccurring problem and would love to find out if I can get this recalled like I seen other 2017 Hyundai Sonatas.

Sep 30, 2025

We are the original owners of this vehicle. Over the past year we have been having to put quart(s) after quart(s) of full synthetic oil into this vehicle. There are no leaks anywhere that the mechanic can find and no burning of oil from the exhaust. We don't drive the vehicle many miles but have to put oil in at least every few weeks. The mechanic stated the last few times we have taken the car in to get looked at that it is a known issue with this make/model. He stated there was nothing he could do and we needed to contact the manufacture. We have tried on numerous occasions to make contact as well as the dealership has as well with no resolve.

I Purchased my 2017 from Hyundai motors of America in 2017. I am the only owner. I Took the care in for a recall for Campaign 953: ECM & CLUSTER UPDATE-ENGINE MONITORING LOGIC PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT to have a a knock sensor placed on the engine to monitor the vehicle for signs of engine failure in 2022. The car has been showing signs of engine failure since the knock sensor was placed on the vehicle and Hyundai claimed that the knock sensor was bad and replaced in. Last week while I was driving the car ok the interstate at 70 miles per hour, the engine stopped running completely while driving. The check engine light did not illuminate until after the vehicle’s engine stopped running. The vehicle lost its ability to accelerate while driving. I was almost hit by a semi as I tried to guide the disabled vehicle to the emergency lane. I took the vehicle to one of the Hyundai dealerships for an inspection. The inspection shows engine failure due to internal failure. The knock sensor from campaign 953 failed to detect any engine problems. I Called hyundai motors of America and was given a case number (41539529). Even though the dealer reported to Hyundai motors of America about the engine failure, Hyundai motors of America is refusing to fix the vehicle due to mileage even though there is an extended warranty through campaign 953. This company is a fraud!! The company wants me to pre-approve authorization payment for them to replace my engine at my expense regardless of the recall, and their negligence!! They are placing people lives at risk.

To whom it may concern, I have own my vehicle since Jan 2018, which was purchased from the dealership's owner w/less than 10k miles. Maintenance has been performed iaw Hyundai's recommended schedule. However, yesterday, I was informed that my vehicle needed a new engine and other replacements totaling $13,934.89. This is OUTRAGEOUS. How can a well kept vehicle w/106445 miles, need such replacements? Thus your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Sep 18, 2025

My 2017 Hyundai Sonata SE is experiencing symptoms consistent with connecting rod bearing failure covered under Hyundai’s KSDS extended warranty program. June 22, 2019: KSDS software (Campaign 953) installed, qualifying the vehicle for Hyundai’s 15-year/150,000-mile warranty coverage for bearing failures. August 2022: Campaign 208 engine recall performed. Hyundai’s record shows Aug 15, 2022, while Wright Way Hyundai’s service history shows Aug 13, 2022 (discrepancy unresolved). March 2025 (100,238 miles): Vehicle went into limp mode with tailpipe smoke and loss of power. It was towed to Wright Way Hyundai, which kept it for several days but returned it with “no issue found.” The smoke continued. June 5, 2025 (103,996 miles): Oil change performed. August 27, 2025: Oil light illuminated, dipstick showed no oil. Vehicle now exhibits severe drivability issues consistent with bearing damage. Hyundai has incorrectly tried to reframe this as an oil-consumption issue and directed me to pay $600 for a combustion chamber cleaning. My issue is not oil consumption — it is a bearing-related failure already covered by warranty. Hyundai’s obligations include a no-cost inspection/diagnosis for connecting rod bearing failure, yet I have been denied that process. Despite repeated written requests, Hyundai continues to attempt phone communication instead of email, even addressing me by the wrong name in correspondence, which suggests reliance on standardized or generic responses. I have exclusively maintained the vehicle at Wright Way Hyundai, following Hyundai’s service schedule. I am resorting to filing this complaint because after weeks of email correspondence, Hyundai’s corporate agent refuses to help and the manager insists on only calling by phone — which I will not answer out of concern they will attempt to mischaracterize or dismiss my complaint verbally. This failure poses a safety risk because the vehicle has lost power suddenly and requiring restart.

Sep 16, 2025

I am constantly seeing my oil light coming on. I have placed at least three quarts of oil in the last month while driving around only 1,200 miles. I took vehicle to mechanic who explained this is known issue with the vehicle I own.

Sep 13, 2025

Oil consumption, lossing one quart of oil per week, I drive 250 miles per week.

Sep 11, 2025

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The engine in my 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport is defective. Oil pressure failed testing, oil contamination was found on the oil pressure sensor and connector, and the vehicle has experienced excessive oil issues. The engine is still in my possession and available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The vehicle has gone into limp mode on the highway, which caused a sudden loss of power and created a dangerous situation in traffic. The car also shakes, misfires, and loses power unexpectedly, which could lead to stalling or loss of control at highway speeds. I do not feel safe driving the car. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. Multiple Hyundai dealerships have inspected the car. One confirmed low oil pressure and oil contamination at the sensor. Previous visits dismissed the oil warning and charged me for oil replacement instead of identifying the underlying defect. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Yes. The vehicle has been inspected by Hyundai dealers multiple times. I also have two inspection reports from the same dealer just two weeks apart with contradictory findings the first showing no oil issue, the second confirming oil contamination and failed oil pressure. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes. The oil warning light and check engine light have both come on. The vehicle has gone into limp mode, and symptoms have included shaking, misfiring, rough idling, and loss of power. These issues began months ago and have continued despite repeated service visits.

Engine is burning up full tank of oil in a few days there are no oil leaks coming from the car. The car has been expected and worked on by multiple mechanics. The engine lights keeps coming on.

Sep 5, 2025

The camshaft position sensor internal rubber plug is faulty and it allows oil to leak into the sensor housing. Ruining the sensor and the brushes and housing. It causes the check engine light to come on the idle races and car takes off on its own. Can’t drive it because it’s to dangerous. Once it takes off then it goes into limp mode and you can’t pull out because of no power. 40000 miles. The internet is full of owners having the same problem

Sep 3, 2025

Excessive amount of oil burning. Was told that this vehicle had a engine recall, and I am trying to see what I can do about it before it blows up.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request?\n' + 'The engine in my 2017 Hyundai Sonata is defective. It burns oil excessively, fouls spark plugs and ignition coils, and causes continuous misfires. The engine is still in my possession and available for inspection.\n' + 'How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk?\n' + 'The engine misfires cause my car to shake violently while driving, lose power unexpectedly, and turn on the check engine light. This creates a risk of stalling or losing control while driving at highway speeds, endangering myself and others. I no longer feel safe driving the car.\n' + '\n' + 'Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center?\n' + 'Yes. Multiple independent mechanics have confirmed that the misfires and repeated spark plug/coil failures are caused by the engine itself, not just normal wear. Hyundai dealers acknowledged the excessive oil consumption and advised combustion cleanings, which did not resolve the issue.\n' + '\n' + 'Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others?\n' + 'Yes. The vehicle has been inspected by multiple Hyundai dealerships (including McGrath Hyundai) and independent service centers (Pep Boys, AAMCO, and others). All noted ongoing oil-related issues and repeated failures tied to the engine.\n' + '\n' + 'Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear?\n' + 'Yes. The check engine light has come on repeatedly over the last two years. Symptoms include rough idling, heavy shaking, loss of power, and repeated ignition coil and spark plug failures (monthly or more often). The problem began within the first year of ownership and has persisted ever since despite repairs.

Aug 19, 2025

My 2017 Hyundai Sonata Limited check engine light came on at approximately 103,000 miles of use. This happened last week. The code it was pointing to was a faulty Fuel Pressure Sensor. Could also be combined with faulty fuel pump, but the primary code indicates the sensor. I will be taking it in to the Hyundai dealership shortly. The main reason I’m reporting this is because of my previous experience owning a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe that had to have the engine replaced three times all under warranty. There ended up being a class action lawsuit because of several owners experiencing the same proglem. While this may not be the same case, I am Leary of engine problems like this. I take very good care of my cars with regular maintenance, so I’m reporting this just in case others are experiencing the same problem.

Aug 13, 2025

I have recently acquired this vehicle. There has been zero unrecorded recalls, and I have been told that there is an active recall on the engine in this vehicle. I am inquiring this. The car has recently been taken to my mechanic and he has told me this plus the car engine is using a excessive amount of oil. I have heard that it is possible to have the engine replaced due to the recall I am inquiring about that. On the date of the incident that has occurred. I am putting the date of the purchase of the vehicle order that is on the Pohanka buyers order.

Aug 6, 2025

The engine was eating up oil and failed. I have regularly had to get oil changes within 1000 miles of each other. Kept oil in my car like spare gasoline to top off every 4-7 days. Took my car in immediately when the check engine light came on to which the dealership said I have been negligent in my oil changes. The check engine light never came on prior, and I had an oil change the day before it did come on. It put my safety at risk because the engine could have just burst at any moment, and to my knowledge nothing was wrong since I was regularly putting oil in or getting an oil change. Yes the issue has been confirmed by the dealership. There was no warning other than the low oil light continuously coming on. I took it into the dealership last Spring to which they said there was no issue.

I am leasing a 2017 Hyundai Sonata from Car City in Michigan. In May 2025, the vehicle received a brand-new engine replacement due to previous problems. I picked the car up on [XXX], and on the same day, the vehicle began malfunctioning. It would not accelerate properly, jerked and stalled, and multiple warning lights — including the check engine light — came on immediately. This made the car unsafe to drive. I contacted the dealer, but they told me to wait until Monday to get it looked at, leaving me with a dangerous and unreliable car. The vehicle had already been in the shop for over two months for the engine issue, and I had only driven it for six months beforehand. I believe the repair or replacement engine is defective or was not properly installed. This creates a serious safety hazard. A car that stalls while driving puts everyone at risk. I am filing this complaint so this issue can be investigated and addressed if others are affected. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Aug 4, 2025

The engine in my 2017 Hyundai Sonata has been burning excessive amounts of engine oil over an extended period. The issue started approximately 10,000 miles ago but has worsened recently, requiring frequent oil top-offs between regular oil changes. The oil consumption is abnormal and not consistent with normal wear. This excessive oil burning poses a potential safety risk, including possible engine failure, stalling, or fire hazard due to low oil levels if not monitored carefully. The vehicle has not yet experienced a complete failure but the risk concerns me. The problem has been observed consistently during normal driving conditions. I have not yet had an official inspection or oil consumption test performed by a dealer, but I intend to request one. There have been no warning lights related to the oil burning issue, but the oil level drops rapidly and noticeably.

Constant losing oil, constant changing of spark plugs, car shaking, can't pick up speed

Jul 29, 2025

I am writing to request a Goodwill replacement. My car is burning oil faster than I can put it in. The engine heats up so bad that I feel it could catch fire at any time. I loose acceleration because of this, its an extreme safety hazard for myself and other motorists on the road. I am just now finding out about the issues Hyundai sonatas are having with this said problem. I would like it fixed asap.

Jul 27, 2025

My 2017 Hyundai Sonata has a major oil consumption problem. The car does not leak oil. It burns oil average 3000 miles. I have to add 5 to 6 quarts of oil every time I bring it to the shop and ask about it they tell me Hyundai has a problem with one of their engines, I see the recall on other models, but not my model. it’s been ongoing for about a year.

Jul 23, 2025

Engine started making a noise and then the car died and would not start. We were on the highway service road when the car died in the middle of the road. We took the car to the dealership and they confirmed the vehicle engine has seized up. This is covered under warranty. The manufacturer denied the claim because of a sensor recall in August 9, 2018. We purchased this car used on July 11, 2018 and never received the recall notification for this sensor. The manufacturer is refusing to repair the engine that is under warranty.

Jul 15, 2025

Premature rod bearing failure at 126,750. Dealer said there was extended warranty for this failure. Turns out that Hyundai denied this because they say Recall 953 was not done. This does not reflect what I show, I show this a Service Program and probably a notice does not get sent out. I have gotten an estimate for $7848.50 for engine replace. I do not agree with this decision since it is a know problem with multiple class action lawsuits.

Jul 14, 2025

All documents are attached as it is many separate incidents that ended knock from motor and minutes later, a piston shooting through the engine block which is what made the car inoperable

Jul 5, 2025

I am writing to request your assistance in enforcing the terms of the class action settlement and extended warranty coverage for my 2017 Hyundai Sonata (VIN: [XXX] ). Despite clear evidence of a defective Theta II engine, Hyundai Corporate has refused to authorize a full engine replacement unless the engine “blows” completely. This directly conflicts with the express terms of the “In re: Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation” settlement, which requires Hyundai to cover any engine exhibiting failure‐mode symptoms. Below, I have summarized all relevant facts, diagnoses, and correspondence. I purchased this Sonata used from Oakes Kia (Kansas City, MO) in May 2023. At the time of purchase, the vehicle had 77,000 miles. To my knowledge, I am the third owner of this vehicle. Since I bought this car, I have followed the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule: All routine oil changes (every 5,000 miles, or sooner) at Oakes Kia, plus one oil change at Northtowne Hyundai in April 2025. The engine currently has approximately 98,650 miles. I have driven it about 1,000 miles since December 2024 to avoid further damage and due to the danger, it puts me and others in on the road. Since December the vehicle has had persistent shaking, hesitation on acceleration, strong odor, and illuminated Check Engine Light. Car condition has worsened since last oil change and even after coil packs and spark plugs were replaced, there was no improvement. The last oil change was done at Oakes Kia along with a tire rotation and multi-point inspection. They Installed UM018 CH074: Mobil SP 5W30 SN, 21513 23001: Gasket-oil plug and 26300 35505: Filter assy-engine O Service Advisor, Fernando Perez said they did not identify root cause of the shaking, hesitation and strong odor; they instructed me to return to the mechanic who had replaced spark plugs/coil packs, possibly I got a bad spark plug or coil pack. I did this, it was not the problem. I have files to share but they are too big! INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATIO

I purchased this car in 2018. Noticed it would be low on oil frequently by year one of having it I took in in for regular maintenance at the dealer by year 2 car began giving me more issues with oil and engine I have had the manifold replaced and other parts in the engine several times and keep running into the same issues and from what I found out I’m not the only one dealing with oil consumption issues I was told by the dealer this is a regular issue with this car and that Hyundai will not cover it I feel it’s very unfair to the consumer that they did not disclose this to me when I explained I needed a dependable vehicle because I had a disabled child I have put so much money in this vehicle I could have bought a new one by now

Engine seized on me, lurched forward, then engine light starting flashing and I could barely accelerate anymore. Had to go very slowly to make it home. My local autoshop says this is very common with Hyundai's and there was a recall for bad engines for this.

2017 Hyundai Sonata having severe oil consumption issue. Having to top off with a quart of oil every 500 miles. Was purchased last June and has been a nightmare since. We contacted Hyundai consumer affairs and they opened a case and made an appointment for us to go to a local Hyundai dealer. The dealership told us we didn’t qualify for oil consumption test be cause we are second owners and the vehicle had 62,000 miles on it. We did purchase an extended warranty when we bought the car but they won’t cover oil issue. Local mechanic won’t touch it and refers us to Hyundai dealer. Just getting so frustrated and worried about car safety and engine damage. I read on another sit that Hyundai issued an oil consumption recall in 2025 but our vehicle is not listed. Please help us.

The car went into limp mode activated by the knock sensor. Audible knocking noises were emitted. Hyundai dealership replaced knock sensor. Car drove 63 miles before knocking noise repeated and car went into limp mode. Hyundai dealership requested new engine as problem is covered by extended warranty for known issue. It has been declined by corporate office. Car is at dealership and unsafe to operate.

The 2017 hyundai sonata 2.4L excessively consumes oil. I constantly put oil in my car. My fear is that I will have a critical engine failure during commute and will be fully responsible for replacing the engine even though hyundai motors designed a poorly built engine. Every time I search Google about the make and model it is always hundreds of other hyundai sonata owners with the same problems and fears that their car will break down or have already had their engine replaced. I would like to see an investigation take place on the 2017 hyundai sonata 2.4L engine. It is poorly designed and consumes more than enough oil in a short amount of time to cause engine failure.

Engine burning oil like crazy never had to put so much in for any other car. Risk of engine lock without enough oil also sets of the knock sensor. Every time I get an oil change they let me know that I’ve burned most of my oil and that it’s low so I just started doing my own oil topping it off. Problem has been ongoing since I got the car.

I am writing to file a formal safety complaint regarding my 2017 Hyundai Sonata which suffered an unexpected engine seizure on January 22, 2025, while my daughter was driving. The incident occurred without warning and left her stranded in a hazardous location, putting her in immediate danger. This appears to be part of a wider, documented issue affecting Hyundai vehicles. My understanding is that engine failures—particularly in Sonata models—have been the subject of recalls and class action lawsuits. However, Hyundai Motor America has refused to replace or repurchase the vehicle. Instead, they replaced the engine with one that now carries less warranty coverage than the original (12,000 miles vs. 26,000 miles remaining). Since the engine replacement, the vehicle has presented new problems, and now needs a new battery after sitting on the lot for so long. Hyundai has failed to offer meaningful support, leaving my family without a reliable vehicle for over two months. Hyundai has refused to replace or repurchase the vehicle, and I am now stuck with a car I cannot drive, cannot sell (due to the engine failure now reported on Carfax), and cannot rely on to safely transport my daughter. I believe this represents not only a serious safety risk, but also a pattern of negligence that could affect other drivers unaware of the risks. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate this issue further and consider expanding oversight into Hyundai’s handling of these engine failures. I am available to provide full documentation, service records, and communication history.

I am seeking a resolution to the concerning and potentially dangerous issues that I have experienced with my vehicle. I got it from Carvana Dec 2023 and only had it for a year, and I’ve only drove 19,000 miles on it before my engine cut off on me while on the highway. I was going 70 mph when the safety of my life was at risk. After, I tried to send it to the dealership, they let my car sit for a month before even looking at it, they couldn’t tell me because they let it die. My car was completely off. So i got no full diagnostic. I have personally endured the traumatic experience of my engine suffering catastrophic failure. Also, my vehicle was consuming oil at an alarming rate, necessitating frequent and costly refills. I would sometimes even go 500 miles before the due of an oil change and would be told that my oil is very low. I believe that these problems should not be considered normal wear and tear. The hybrid sonata 2017 had a engine recall and so should the sonata 2017 limited 2.4L.

My Hyundai Sonata sport had a Manufacturer defect causing oil consumption. When my engine starting having issues they replaced it for free. I got it back and the engine light came on so i called they ask me to bring it back and i did. They told me the code was a po326 powertrain control module or faulty knock sensor. They said the code was a history code and they cleared it out drove it and the light did not come back on. I picked it up drove it and the light came back on. I called they said bring back again and before it could get it back over there the transmission went into limp mode or safety mode. They said my transmission was gone and needed a a new one. $4385.44. I wasn't having any issues before the engine replacement. All other mechanics think something happened when the replaced the engine. I just dont want to be taken advantage of. Long Hyundai Chattanooga Tennessee.

The check engine light light is on now giving code p200a I was driving and the center console shut off and the engine died I had to pull over and start the car again it started but the check engine light light is on now for a p200a I’ve looked it up and everything I can find says there is a recall but my car isn’t in it so what can I do I don’t want to cause a fire or an accident because my car messed up o. This is the third time after 3 “repairs” that I have had my car at the dealer in less than a year. Car went into “limp” mode while driving down the highway causing car to stall and not go over 20 mph. First time they said it was a technical update needing done. Second time said low battery power causing issue so I purchased $300 battery from dealer and now showing cylinder 4 misfire and recommend replacing spark plugs and oil combustion testing due to having to add 3 quarts of oil every 230 miles due to excessive oil consumption. Dealer said this will not fix the issue however so why would I pay to have it done if it won’t fix the issue. Luckily these three incidents of engine power loss hasn’t caused me to have an accident but what If in 3 months and my engine loses power without warning for the 4th time in a year it dies cause an accident. I have a case open with Hyundai but am getting nowhere. I feel like a measly engine replacement would cost less than it will cost if this causes a major accident soon.

I was driving on highway when all of sudden my vehicle began to shake hard and lose power, every time I stepped on the accelerator the check engine light came on, this happened on [XXX] in Los Baños, CA. My safety was at risk as all other traffic was going past me including semi trucks as I was trying to find a safe place to pull over out of harms way, as I was doing this the car shut off completely before I could even pull over. I had to get the vehicle towed to my local dealership where they had it for almost 3 weeks now, only diagnostic I’ve had back was that it has 2 misfires, one in cylinder 2 and the other in cylinder 4, and that it has no compression in cylinder 2. They said it isn’t covered under warranty which I believe should be looked into as I could of been serious hurt or lost my life due to this issues. I’ve had the vehicle serviced up to date since I’ve owed it and also noticed high oil consumption, not sure if this led to engine failure? The final diagnosis from Hyandai dealer is that engine is no good anymore and need replacement but it’s not covered under warranty. Unknown... I recently got an oil change and not even a week later my oil light came on. There's no leaks, I've been to midas several times and no leak was found. Was told to check to see if it had any recalls, my vin doesn't produce a recall but I know there's something wrong with my car.

My vehicle was purchased in 2018 and currently has 128,000 miles. I took it to the dealership because it was puttering and not holding pil. The dealership did some work on the vehicle. Furthermore, after that trip to the dealership, my car kept burning oil even after recent oil changes that I found myself constantly adding oil. I took it to another licensed mechanic who informed me after a tune up that my car is consistently burning oil. This was after I had a recent oil change. The engine is defective, hyundai knows they are defective and refuse to do anything about it.

Feb 24, 2025

Car has been burning oil since September of 2024. It’s burning 2 quarts of oil every 500 miles. The oil is burning out spark plugs and coils every 3 months. These engines need to be recall and Hyundai needs to be held accountable.

The contact owned a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while on travel, the contact stopped at a local gas station. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked and unoccupied, the contact was informed by the store attendant that the vehicle was on fire. The contact noticed the fire came from under the hood compartment and the vehicle was engulfed with flames. The contact stated an off-duty police officer and the store owner attempted to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers, however, they were unsuccessful. The fire department was called, arrived on the scene, and extinguished the fire but the vehicle was already consumed by the fire. The vehicle and all properties in the vehicle were destroyed in the fire. The vehicle was towed to a local tow yard. The vehicle was condemned to total loss by the insurance company. A police report was filed. In addition, the contact stated that 75 miles before the fire occurrence, the vehicle was started, and the contact noticed white smoke exiting from under the hood compartment. The contact interpreted it to be frost from the start of the engine being cold. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000

Every few months my car’s engine struggles. It doesn’t start, or I have to try a few times. For whatever reason I need to get an oil change a lot more frequently than normal and I’ve been to the shop before and the shop tells me that my engine is recalled but it doesn’t say that on the website when I put my vin number in. Whenever the engine stops working again sometimes the AC doesn’t work and it almost put my dog’s life at risk once.

I can’t drive my car on the highway cause then it will shut off and say HEV system error and I have to shut my car off turn it back on then erase the code with my diagnostic tool. My oil light keeps popping up and whenever I slightly press on the gas pedal or go up a steep hill, it starts to rattle, been noticing my oil burns out fast and I have to replace it when it gets low.

Jan 9, 2025

I am filing this complaint regarding a significant safety concern with my 2017 Hyundai Sonata. Since around 65,000 miles, my vehicle has experienced excessive engine oil consumption. The issue has progressively worsened, and my car now has 126,000 miles. Despite undergoing an oil consumption test that confirmed the rapid depletion of oil, Hyundai and their dealerships have failed to provide a resolution. This defect requires me to add oil approximately every two weeks. The excessive oil consumption poses a potential safety hazard, as the engine could seize unexpectedly while driving due to insufficient oil levels. The risk of engine failure is further exacerbated by the lack of sufficient warnings from Hyundai regarding this known issue. This situation not only jeopardizes the safety of myself and my passengers but also other drivers on the road. I am requesting that the NHTSA investigate this matter, as it appears to be a widespread issue among Hyundai vehicles. Prompt action is necessary to ensure consumer safety and hold the manufacturer accountable for addressing this defect. Thank you for your attention to this serious matter. I am happy to provide additional details or documentation upon request.

The makes a weird shutter noise when accelerating and won't crank over 60. Loses power when turning or when going uphill. Sometimes has problem starting. Enging light came on twice blinking, once I changed the battery it went off and was working fine. Now it's back on again after a few weeks. Plus my oil tank still comes on and I've just received and oil change. I just bought the car in August of this year, dealership sold to me with a faulty battery.

Driving home car just shut off still had power to steer and brake but no engine. Pulled it off the main road and it leaked oil but still no engine. Already had the dealer replace the intake manifold at my expense despite hyundai knowing the plastic lever inside fails. We were lucky the snowplow was going the opposite direction as the weather was horrible as we got closer to home. I have a dead car in my yard waiting to have a dealer look at it. We could have been killed due to fault of engine.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. Additionally, there was white smoke coming from the engine compartment and the exhaust. The contact retrieved DTC code: P0420 for spark plug failure. The spark plugs were replaced; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was diagnosed with spark plugs and catalytic converter failure. The spark plugs were replaced. The contact stated that the spark plugs looked burned. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the catalytic converter was replaced; however, the failure reoccurred. The contact stated that the vehicle had been consuming an excessive amount of engine oil for almost two years. The contact stated that engine oil was added every 600 miles of driving. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The dealer was made aware of the failure and provided the contact with the cost for a diagnostic test. The contact declined to pay for a diagnostic test. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was unknown.

The engine started knocking while I was driving around a lot of cars and while I was going to AutoZone to see why the check engine light was flashing on my car wouldn't accelerate and randomly started stopping and I was fearing for my life when I was going on the highway to go back home. For almost a year now I noticed the oil in my car started burning more and more like I would only drive 1k miles and it would already be done with, so I had to replace it. Hyundai knows this is a problem with this car because I called and asked them about the oil and told me specifically it's an engine problem once it starts knocking then you can come fix your car but want me to pay and fix the whole engine and work process.

The drivers seat belt does not engage. The engine has been burning oil, misfiring, and even after thousands in repairs was returned to me by the dealership with continued misfiring. When returning the car back to the dealer service center days later after Hurricane Helene, the car continued to misfire and became so overheated the engine light was flashing. Upon calling for a tow, I attempted to raise the hood for the driver to locate the car, but the hood was so hot it burned my hand. The engine was so hot, I believe it was about to catch fire and would have had I not been able to pull over so quickly. Had I been driving on the Interstate, I have no doubt this car would have been on fire within minutes.

The car has been experiencing oil consumption issues for the past 15k miles and it's getting worse hyundai says .y vin isn't under recall and they can't help me. My mechanic says my oil consumption is high and is concerned about potential engine failure. I have to add oil every 500 miles. The 2.4l engine has had major issues but Hyundai will not expand the recall. My mechanic has seen issues like this but Hyundai won't do anything. I have friends with engine failures in similar Hyundai models. This has been going on for about a year when I had mileages in the 77k range. I now have 99k and the oil consumption is getting worse. I am very easy on this car and always do full synthetic changes at the Hyundai recommended intervals for the severe driving schedule. I've never had a car costume anything close to the amount of oil I am using including two other Hyundai I have owned.

The engine is losing oil at a much higher rate, causing a knocking sound. Not accelerating at it should without the sound getting louder and hesitating. This vehicle has been inspected by a licensing mechanic ( Goodyear). The check engine lights and multiple codes have appeared while driving for about the last 4-5 months.

Excessive or consumption. Purchase a car three weeks later car started misfiring I was able to get the car to a mechanic shop. I was told that the car needed a tuneup, spark plugs and ignition call was changed mechanic noticed oil on top of the engine and advise me to get an engine gasket. Gasket was replaced 2 weeks later oil light comes on I added 5 quart of oil the light goes off I notified the mechanic again was able to get the car in the shop took mechanic replaced the gasket week later oil light was flickering took the car to have oil change. There was no oil in the car, three weeks later oil light flickering again checked oil it was empty I added five more quarts to the car and took the car back to the back the mechanic one he inspected it he informed me that the engine in the car for some reason consume a lot oil and that I should take the car to Hyundai dealership. I checked Hyundai recall for the oil consumption issue the car model I have is not apart of the recall. I could have lost my life when the car stalled due to oil is leaking where the spark plugs are located. Hyundai need to recall all 2013-2017 Hyundai sonata and Elentra

Vehicle is burning oil. Have been using fully synthetic oil at regular 3000 miles. And have been increasing “burned” more oil before each oil change. Valvoline Instant Oil Change is the shop I’ve been going to for my oil serviced maintenance. My last visit I had 1 quart of oil left in my engine.

Oct 24, 2024

In early June 2024 while driving 65 MPH vehicle started shaking, engine and oil light came on, losing power, noisy and only would go 50 MPH max. When destination reached, checked oil level (was low) added oil.Took the vehicle to auto repair shop. Review showed a misfire in cylinder #2 with plug oil fouled and recommended new engine. The car was taken to the Hyundai dealer who performed various diag. procedures via communicating with their Techline who ended up rejecting the request to replace the engine due to the milage (136K) being out of warranty. They would replace engine if the connecting rod bearings had wear or damage. Hyundai national consumer affairs contact given for the case refuses to listen to any information given and only states vehicle is out of warranty. Hyundai knows this engine has manufacturing issues causing them to wear out prematurely including excessive oil consumption. They should extend the warranty to at least 150K. Afraid to drive car as engine may suddenly stop or catch fire causing accident/injury to occupants. Please help!

Engine is burning a lot of oil. Having to get frequent oil changes due to the engine burning oil.

Oct 17, 2024

The car is burning through oil at an excecated rate. This is a well-known issue with this make and model. The dealer said they fixed the problem, and they did not. This engine needs to be replaced. It was inspected by a mechanic not affiliated with Hyundai. Hyundai has refused to replace the engine. This should be covered by the 15 year/ 150,00 engine warranty. This engine could seize up at any time. It is a hazard to be driving. The driver is an 80-year woman. She needs help.

Bought a car. In couple days check engine light came on, it was blinking and car was put on limp mode, rpm between 1800-2000, speed 60-62 mph. Went to dealership they did full diagnostics, told that they are going to submit to Hyundai to replace engine at their cost. Hyundai came back that they want to replace knock sensor and then see what’s gonna happen. I replaced and was told that i have to pay even though there is a recall on Knock sensors. They replaced the sensor which was over 600$. And the problem came back in less than 36 hours. Now the vehichle is back again at the dealership and they gonna do diagnostics again. Which is ~200$. I need to help this resolved as i’m only being ripped off with no solution. The vin says it doesn’t have any recalls, but vehichle is experiencing exactly what’s on recall. The vehicle has been in the shops for a month now. Thank you

My engine burns oil like crazy. At least 1 qt every 1,000 miles or less. Took to dealership and was given a hard time about it having an issue. Now my power steering light keeps randomly coming on. I'll feel the steering start to get hard to steer. Thought I needed belts so I replaced both serpentine & water pump belt but it still happens. When my power steering light comes on and steering wheel locks up, I have to put the car in park & rev the engine to get the light to turn off. Mechanics said all pulleys are in good shape so not sure what's doing it. My lights also start to flicker when power steering light comes on. I have a new altenator and battery so it's not caused from that. I have no idea what's causing it but it's extremely dangerous!!

They car has high oil consumption. It only has 70,000 miles on it. It should not use a quart of oil or more every 1000 miles. Need to be put on a recall. Engine just like people have said about 115000 miles or more your engine will possibly blow,or sieze up. No car should have that much oil consumption. I change or have my oil change every 3000 miles or close.

Sep 9, 2024

The vehicle itself shakes when accelerating and will start to fail once 60mph is hit. It will also cut out when left turns are made...I have met 4 people with the exact same issues who received recalls but I am not sure why my car is not included. I was almost rear ended on the highway by a semi with my pregnant wife and 4 year old son in the car because of the engine failure.

To whom it may concern, I would like to inform you that I have been experiencing engine power loss and oil evaporation from my Sonata. In fact, I took the vehicle for an oil change in April 26, 2024 and by August 1, 2024, my car was not accelarating and the dashboard was completely illuminated with the engine, air bags and suspension lights. Upon inspection of engine oil dipstick, I was made aware that my oil was missing (evaporated) without any visual undercarriage drips. Therefore, I added 4 qts of synthetic oil to my car recently replaced oil and the car continued without power. Upon connecting a vehicle code reader, it was reported that a spark plug was malfunctioning and I continue with its replacement. To date the vehicle continues to have engine loss of power episodes. Can someone please help as I do not want to die in this vehicle due to a manufacturer's unannounced/undisclosed engine issue. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I was driving the vehicle and it of no where the hybrid warming triangle comes up and I had to pull over. The car went in creep mode and then rpm and sped was capped.

Me along with thousands of others are experiencing the “excessive oil consumption” issue. Hyundai is doing nothing except making us pay tons of money for testing when they already know what the issue is and is refusing to do anything. Enough is enough. I can’t afford a new car nor should I be forced into buying one. The dealerships have been instructed by Hyundai USA not to admit negligence or helping g the car owners.

Aug 25, 2024

I had the engine replaced in Feb of 2024 which was covered by the engine replacement recall. In May of 2024 I started having issues with my check engine light flashing on then off. The engine will lose power briefly during this time and the engine shakes. It feels like you are going to lose control of the vehicle when this happens. This has happened approximately 3 times at freeway speeds and a total of approximately 15 times total. I have taken it to the dealership 3 times for this issue. They made us pay for spark plugs that were fine when the engine was replaced (3800 miles was driven between the engine replacement and this issue starting). The dealership has now had the vehicle since the middle of May said they can’t recreate the problem but are saying it is a fuel pump. This was also fine when the checked it when the engine was replaced.

Aug 24, 2024

Apparently there has been a leak in the engine and was not retaining any oil. We’ve tried to fixed it but it wasn’t fixed properly. My safety and others were at risk by the car shutting down at any moment. I have not taken it to the dealer yet. I am willing to do an inspection at a dealership for a better understanding on the issue.Check engine light came on about a month ago and I kept trying to fix it but check engine light is still there.

Without warning my car started consuming oil while still under manufacturer warranty. Hyundai had me do 2 oil consumption tests and they did there so called engine cleaning which they said should fix the problem on 2 different occasions and not even 3 months apart, well the engine was still consuming oil and now the oil is messing up my spark plugs and Hyundai refused to fix it. There is enough evidence out there that shows Hyundai knows their piston rings in the engines were no good for years and still keeps selling these engines without warning the customer. Hyundai refused to honor their warranty on the engine cleaning solution that the dealership is required to use by Hyundai itself. My car's engine went in less than 7 months after they first started doing the oil consumption test on my car and now refuse to fix or replace the engine. When my car's engine went luckily I was on a side street when it went, because if I was on the highway who knows what could have happened. Hyundai omitted in lawsuits outside the country for knowing these were bad piston rings. Which also led to fires in these cars engines. There is a Facebook page with thousands of people having the same issue and Hyundai not even trying to fix the problem, and there our to many to count around the world with the same engines and cars having the same issue so it not just a small isolated event.

The motor in this vehicle consumes oil like a drunken sailor consumes alcohol. I have the oil changed, and before the next scheduled oil change, the car had The oil indicator light come on. I immediately went to the nearest AutoZone and purchased oil and put in the car. I took it to the dealership and they told me they were aware of the issue surrounding the motor in this make and model of vehicle however, my Vin number was not included on the recall. So they could do nothing to help me. This is a safety issue because the motor should go at least 3000 miles with without having to have, a full 5 quarts of oil put back in because it’s sitting on empty. The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was diagnosed with starter failure and low engine oil. The vehicle was repaired. The independent mechanic advised the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer for assistance. The contact stated the vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not diagnosed; however, the dealer made the contact aware of similar issues with excessive oil consumption. The contact was informed that he had to pay out of pocket for an oil consumption test. The oil consumption test was not performed, and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

Have problem with high oil consumption which caused carbon deposits to burn valves. I was driving on the highway when engine light came on the car lost power and stalled on the road. At highway speeds that could have caused a collision with traffic. The car was bought at a dealer with 35000 miles on it when I started to notice a slight problem. The car now has 88500 miles on it and has gotten worse. The dealer said it needs a new engine which Hyundai has denied. The dealer said too many mile’s between oil changes but all maintenance has been done when needed at the dealer and Big-O. I have noticed online many complaints with the same problem. I contacted Hyundai have case #23502874 Cost to repair $9743.94 at dealer

Jun 23, 2024

While driving on the highway the car stopped .. it was towed to Hyundai as it is still under warranty and ultimately we were told it suffered "catastrophic engine failure" I was also told that a new engine would not be covered. When I asked why I was instructed to give maintenance records which I did. It was denied BEFORE they asked for records. I have been going back and forth with Hyundai and the reason they have given me is an exact effect of their ongoing issues with the THETA II- GDI engine. I have compiled so much research regarding the defect and Hyundai stopped responding to me when I asked them the difference between my car's engine and those that Hyundai knowing delayed recalling and the thousands of same engines that have determined as defective. This has been going on for months and I am not going to let it go and there is a growing petition for another investigation to be opened. Hyundai deliberately delayed recalling a known defect that has affected thousands of vehicles and it is shameful they are playing games. I have an enormous file of data that would indicate the 2017 Sonata Theta II is just as defective as all the others and that their own mechanics have gone on the record admitting that an oil blockage from metal shavings will ultimately cause a catastrophic failure. I have emails from Hyundai and Texts from dealer on cost. I am checking with my attorney to see if they can be shared.

I was driving down the freeway when my engine made a loud knocking noise, the noise got worse as the RPMs increased. The check engine light began to flash and I lost power, the vehicle will not exceed 60mph and vibrates when moving down the road. I believe this issue is widely know about and should be addressed and forced into a recall. I have maintained the vehicle and should not be responsible for a manufacturing error.

My car has cut off in the middle of the highway and street. I feel vibration under my seat and I was unable to start my vehicle. Hyundai repaired my engine and I am still having the same issues. The car feels like it’s slowing down before is completely stops.

My car was eating up oil and there was no leak in it. Then the vehicle stopped working. I kept up the maintenance for the vehicle and when I reached out to Hyundai they told me to take it to my local dealership to get fixed and they stated that they could not fix it, but according to the class action suite I was suppose to get it fixed

My car has been burning excessive amounts of oil for the past 6 months now. It is so bad there is excessive carbin built up in the piston rings that caused my engine to missfire 2 times in less than six months. Today 5-7-2024 to my car back to the dealer for that problem and they told me I need a new engine but unfortunately it was not coverd by the engine extended warranty. Please help me resolve this issue because I cannot afford a new engine or a car.

The engine was the part which failed. While driving the engine stalled and would not go forward. A foul smell was coming from the engine and the engine was rattling. The floor was wet on the passenger side interior. We let it cool down and took it to the dealer. They did not offer any explanation concerning why the car was not operating poorly or why the car smelled bad or why it stalled frequently and lost full power. Steve Taylor Hyundai service department quote "we don't know what's wrong with your car". It had 78383 miles on it. Taylor Hyundai said we can trade it in but you will have negative equity on your new loan. We were not credited for our trade in but we lost 4 or 5 thousand dollars on the trade-in. They did not cover the car with the warranty and did not repair it. The paperwork on the sale is quite confusing and does not make sense, but we know we lost money on the purchase of another car, and they did not honor the warranty. HELP

While driving on a highway at ~60 mph, the check engine light came on (plus other indicator lights) and the car immediately dropped to ~45 mph. ~20 seconds later, while trying to pull into a school parking lot, the hybrid system fault warning came on and the car dropped to ~5-10 mph and then became extremely difficult to control. The car was towed ~80 miles to my home dealership and it was diagnosed as a partially blocked EGR tube. ~1 month later, on the next longer drive I had to make (all other drives were short distances), ~70 miles into the drive, the car started making a knocking sound and then suffered the same failure under the same kind of conditions. This was diagnosed as a failed knock sensor. One week later I tried to drive it a long distance to see if the problem would happen again (but closer to home) and while traveling on an interstate highway the same issue occurred. This time it was diagnosed as oil in the wiring assembly for the just replaced knock sensor. The dealership tried to give me the car back but I demanded that they do a long test drive. It took 4 days to get them to do what I asked and then they had it break down on them in the same way. I'm not 3+ weeks after that and still don't have the car back (now they're planning to replace the EGR assembly and intake manifold). Each breakdown has thrown the P1326 trouble code but Hyundai refuses to admit that the issue may be the engine itself (related to the recall). It took until the 3rd breakdown and a lot of demands to get a loaner vehicle. I don't know if this is the known engine issue, something else or new but don't feel that Hyundai is taking it seriously. If nothing else, the programming that was added to put the car in safe mode and prevent fires is too aggressive and in each case has made the car undrivable in less than 1 mile. I have gotten lucky in all cases that a safe place to stop was nearby but it is not safe to drive in many areas due to lack of safe pull off location

Apr 23, 2024

A couple of weeks ago my car seemed to be skipping when I started driving. I had no idea what could be wrong but some kind of intuition made me think to check the oil. I had the oil changed in December 2023 but had only driven about 1000 miles since then. I'm working from home so not driving alot. My oil was VERY low - it didn't even measure up to the first fill line. I started reading info online and realized that many Hyundai Sonata owners were reporting similar issues, so I went to an auto store bought a quart of oil and put that in. After testing, I got another quart of oil and put that in, finally bringing oil level to amount recommended by the lines on the oil stick. A couple days later I took my car to the local dealer, Tuscaloosa Hyundai. As soon as I started describing the problem, they immediately knew what was wrong - another sign that this problem is way too common. They performed some type of combustion chamber cleaning with oil and filter change and charged me $672. I drive a 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport. When changing oil in December 2023, car had 60780 miles on it. The oil change personnel did say that the car seemed to be using too much oil, which may be why I thought to check it when the car was acting weird. When I took it to the dealer in April 2024, the car had 61816 miles on it. If I had not checked the oil, my engine could have been destroyed and I could have been left stranded on the side of the road. With so many other Hyundai owners claiming the same problem, I can't understand why this vehicle wasn't recalled so that the problem could be fixed, and/or that this problem which could have serious consequences wasn't covered by Hyundai. I am [XXX], don't drive far from home and drive very carefully. There should be no reason a car with 60000 miles on it is consuming oil at this rate. No warning lights were on in my car to indicate that I had an issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My son was driving the car, and completely out of nowhere it seized to have any compression and steering/accelerating became disabled. I have been given an estimate up to $7,000 for an engine rebuild due to this happening. I have reached out to Hyundai and they denied my claim due to car being out of warranty. This should have never happened when the car has been well maintained, even with the motor burning through oil faster than it should be, which I have always kept a close eye on. This car is defective and unsafe.

My husband was driving the car on I95 yesterday, no lights on on the dashboard. Suddenly, the engine stalled and he had to pull out before it completely stopped. He could not get the car to start again. The only light on at that moment was a light indicating the key was not inside the car. He went home with a friend to get the other key, but it didn't started as well. The car spent the night at a shoulder on I95. This morning, he called an independent service center and after checking the car, they said the engine stalled because it run out of oil. There was no apparent leak and no lights indicating a problem with the engine oil. It was changed 2,000 miles ago only. The mechanic also mentioned that Hyundai had similar problems with other cars and that we should call them for that. Since there is no recall for the car, they wouldn't help at the dealer, unless we scheduled a service, which is available for April 21 only.

I have observed that my Hyundai sonata 2017 randomly lose power while driving. Also, sometimes the car vibrates when I am driving. I went to the mechanics few times for them to check it, and they requested to change the spark plugs as well as the coils, which I did but it continuously do that. I usually go to the Hyundai car dealership for oil change, and they will tell me whatever I need to change in the car, which I always do but still it does that. I believe this is not safe especially when you are driving over 50 miles an hour on a high way, and the car randomly loses power; this can cause a serious accident. I am requesting the intervention of your office in making sure that car company’s uphold to the safety of everyone plying the road.

I have a 2017 Hyundai Sonata sport . I make payments on this vehicle. I have only had this vehicle since [XXX] it just hit 100,000 miles. I was on my way to work and the check engine light came on.. I heard a ticking and knocking sound. Then the car shut off. A few mechanics have looked at the car.. I was told about the defects from shaving not being properly cleaned out.. This has never happened before and this is my only transportation. It’s currently at the Hyundai dealership here in Fredericksburg Virginia. But they of course are telling me it will take up 4 to 6 weeks before even doing an engine inspection on the vehicle and they can’t provide me with a rental. It’s obvious that this is an engine malfunction. I would like to be treated fair in this situation and simply have the engine replaced along with any other vehicle updates or at least another vehicle. I purchased my 2017 Hyundai Sonata brand new. At only 37,000 miles, it literally ran out of oil without any prior warning on [XXX], stranding me on the side of the road. The Hyundai dealership has required two oil consumption tests and a combustion chamber cleaning, but the problem continues. This excessive oil consumption issue is well known and well documented by thousands of other Hyundai owners whose vehicles have a Theta II 2.4L engine. Hyundai requires the engine to completely fail before it qualifies for an engine replacement. A friend of mine's Hyundai Sonata caught on fire due to this very same issue while going over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in St. Petersburg, FL in June 2023. If that isn't a safety issue, I don't know what else is. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My 2017 Hyundai Sonata is using oil at a ridiculous rate. The rapid oil consumption has caused me to be left stranded twice & I had to have it towed to a mechanic both times. I’m having to take it every 2 weeks to be checked by a mechanic & it’s low everytime I take it to him. He’s had to replace all the spark plugs 2 different times since October of 2023, which is very costly for me. I’m a single, working mother of 4 children. 2 of which are in college. So I definitely can’t afford all the towing & repair fees. I purchased an extended warranty, which covers the engine, when I bought the car. My mechanic has reached out to them to tell them his findings & recommendation. The warranty company thinks it is normal for the car to use a quart of oil every 2 weeks. I need help asap as my warranty will expire in 8,000 more miles. Please help me resolve this issue so I’m not left stranded again. Engine oil light or any warning lights and symbols never came on after Engine had burned out all the oil. Had oil changed and new oil filter installed and in less then a week it burned out 3 quarts, again with no low oil warning at all. Motor stalled at intersection and had to cool down, oil was again added and lower Engine knocking was present. Meanwhile had a mechanic inspect it and diagnostic done and lower bearings are knocking. Vehicle has had this issue for over 4 years and never mentioned to us until now after 100,000 miles. 2019 is when this oil burning issue began. Hyundai dealer serviced this several times and never mentioned the reason for the knocking other then it was low on oil. After breaking down in a busy intersection had to be pushed off road and waited for Engine to cool down to add oil and knocking continued.

Had cruise control set for 75mph, and while traveling up hill, the car downshifted to maintain speed. After 10-15 seconds I noticed power loss and the check engine began to flash. Disengaged cruise control and pulled off onto the shoulder once I found a safe place to do so. As I was slowing down, there was a very noticeable misfire from the engine and was trying to stall out while still in motion. There was no knocking sound, nor was the car overheating. Once I was fully stopped, the car died and would not start back. Had the car towed back to my house. Replaced spark plugs because cylinders 2 and 4 were not firing properly. Also rotated coil packs around to see if they were failing. Cleared check engine codes but they immediately came back to misfires on cylinders 2 and 4. Did compression tests and found that cylinder 2 had 0psi and cylinder 4 had 20psi. Car was not low on oil and no other warning lamps were on.

My 2017 Hyundai Sonata is burning oil. Originally when we realized that our engine was burning oil we were told that we need to get an oil change, which we did. Come back 1000 miles later, we came back and the engine was missing a lot of oil. They topped it off. We came back another 1000 miles later and we again had receding oil levels. They told us they are cleaning the engine. 500 miles later, on Sunday [XXX] our spark plugs blew. We got our car towed to the dealer, Spitzer Hyundai of Cleveland. Spitzer Hyundai is procrastinating and making stories. Each time we do what they ask, they want additional tests done to confirm the engine is burning oil. One of the employees told us at the beginning: we know and you know the engine is burning oil, but Hyundai needs to confirm that. Now the dealership is asking us to drive another 1000 miles again. The problem is that the spark plugs are shot and need to be replaced. They only need to be replaced because of the faulty engine. They want us to pay $700 to replace the spark plugs when it might fail again in another 100 miles. Meanwhile we have car rental expenses plus other expenses and a headache dealing with the company Hyundai and the dealership Spitzer Hyundai. every time I drove those 1000 miles i was always worried that the engine would stop working if the oil would burn out. My local mechanic is the one who diagnosed my engine to burn oil, and he said not to replace the spark plugs, because it will fail once again. Even if they approve the engine replacement they will probably want to charge us $700 for the cost to "take apart the engine and send pictures to Hyundai". The engine light has been constantly going on about every 1000 miles or so. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My 2017 Hyundai sonata burns oil rapidly, almost 400 miles it burns 5 quarts of oil. The engine stalls randomly and beings to mis fire. The car has stalled on me in the middle of the road with no check engine light or indicator that a problem is present. I have had to change spark plugs and coils far to offen and every time I have to pay the mechanical shop. There is a recall on the hybrids sonatas but not the gas ones. The dealer acknowledges that the car burns oil allot. Which I’ve been told it can lead to engine failure I have done everything possible. And I’ve spoke to other owners and I’m not alone. The vehicle hasn’t been inspected by others such as police. No warning lights appear

I purchased this vehicle with 79k miles less than a year ago and it has barely 90k. My engine light is on, vehicle stalls, and the error codes are revealing misfire involving cylinder #3. I go to the dealership for maintenance, and have kept up with it. Replaced the ignition coil and spark plug for this cylinder and nothing is working. It stalled in the middle of the intersection and I nearly was hit by another vehicle. Supposedly, there are no recalls but I also had issues with the vehicle burning through oil after 1,000 miles of getting oil changed. The dealership claimed nothing was wrong with car but they were so desperate for me to buy this car. Shame on Hyundai.

My daughter wrote you earlier this week about the severe oil oil usage of her 2017 Hyundai Sonata. I am writing a follow up because I co-signed for her vehicle when she and her children were deserted by her husband. Since my name is listed first on her vehicle title and bank loan I have a special interest in the problems she is experiencing with her Sonata. She indicated in her filing with your department that she has had her local Hyundai dealership change her oil every four to five thousand miles which is true. The last time the oil was changed by the dealership was around [XXX]. When she spoke to the service department last week she was informed that since the VIN was not listed as being part of a recall there was nothing they could do for her. Yet this past week I put four additional quarts of oil in the engine. She and her children live with her mother and me. I can attest to the fact that there is no smoke from the exhaust when the vehicle is idling which would indicate bad valve guides. Nor is there smoke from the exhaust when the car is being driven on the road which would be caused by bad oil rings on the pistons. There is no oil being dripped on our driveway or garage floor which would indicate gasket or seals leaking, but the car is consuming oil at an alarming rate and we need your assistance with this issue. Thank you for your time. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

While driving on the highway the car began shaking, the check engine light came on. After guiding the car to the shoulder, we turned the car off and back on after a few minutes. The engine was completely stalled when we turned the car back on - multiple dash lights were on (check engine, oil, and battery were the ones I remember); the car would not accelerate, when we attempted to drive slowly the car, in drive, started rolling backwards/downhill and would not accelerate at all; and the engine was still idling shakily. Car was towed to a mechanic who diagnosed an engine misfire requiring engine replacement. Hyundai dealership denied this as a warrantable issue under Extended Warranty TXXI/TXXC/Service Campaign T3G. This vehicle is a well-kept 2017 with only 90k miles and should not have had this type of engine failure except as a result of poor manufacture.

Twice in the past two months the vehicle enters a rough low RPM. Will not respond to the accelerator and the engine shuts down. First was in a parking lot the second while driving in school zone traffic. Was able to safely get off the road the second time. The parking lot I waited a few minutes and the engine ran normally. Same for the second time, waited a few minutes and it would not start then a few more minutes it started and ran. Both times all dash warning light lit up but just for a few seconds. If this happens at highway speeds a good outcome seems risky.

Jan 29, 2024

Last week as I was driving the engine oil warning light came on. I pulled into a parking lot immediately and turned off my Sonata. After a few minutes I checked the oil and found no oil on the dip stick. I added oil and returned home where I checked online and discovered that there was a recall for Hyundai Sonatas using or burning excessive amounts of oil and ruining the engine. I called my local dealership and was told that my VIN is not included in the recall. It cost thousands of dollars to repair or replace an engine. How could my VIN not be included? The dealership offered no help. I go to the local dealership to have my oil changed every four to five thousand miles.

During travel on highway (~60 MPH), the vehicle suddenly lost power and the engine stopped functioning properly. The effect of the problem was that the vehicle began to 'buck' - as if the engine was having significant trouble running continuously. The engine light then illuminated solidly (not blinking). The vehicle slowed from lack of power and I was forced to move to the right lane/break-down lane through high speed highway traffic (NJ). I was able to travel /limp a few miles slowly to the next exit and get off the highway to a gas station. The engine ceased operation upon arrival to the gas station. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic who diagnosed the issue as engine failure. The vehicle was towed to a Hyundai dealership for diagnosis by the manufacturer (Denville, NJ). The diagnosis was 'engine failure'. No conditions existed prior to this event. In the recent past, the spark plugs and ignition coils were replaced. The vehicle had ~140,000 miles but it was used every day and was maintained very well during its life. I am the original owner. No insurance claim has been filed.

I'm reporting the growing concern of my engine having rod knock or seizing . It has been burning excessive oil since I bought it at 80k miles. I have reached out to hyundai and they have denied me any help as the vehicle is past their 10y/100k mile warranty. Although my vehicle has extended warranty up to 150k miles for engine seize or rod bearing failure through them. There's no warning lamp but the piston slap noise is getting louder, I'm scared this problem might leave my family and I stranded in the middle of the night. Also scared that it can catch on fire due to almost running with no oil. I have to do my oil change every 1200 miles, instead of 3000. corporate hyundai has denied any type of assistance, I went to a dealer to get it checked out and they insist without proof of oil changes there's nothing they can do, i do them myself on all my cars and I'm VERY on top of my maintenance. I have scheduled an appointment 02/07/2024 to try and diagnose the growing issues with the engine itself.

2017 Hyundai Sonata with 108,600 miles, has experienced oil consumption/burning, since at least 85k miles. Costs outside of manufacturers recommendation: *Oil consumption report ($85) *Extensive engine cleaning ($500) -Hyundai considers 1 quart consumed per 1000 miles, acceptable. *Rod bearing clearance test ($140) **Engine replacement (reason for complaint, will cost $3880) Hyundai dealership most recently stickered oil change at 3,800 miles. At approximately 3,000 miles, the oil pressure light began to flash on/off. I checked the oil, it was low. I called the dealership to ask for advice. They indicated my car was OK to drive to the dealership (40 miles away), for service. On the way to the dealership, on the highway, my vehicle started to experience intense vibrations. My check engine light came on. I had to take my car from ~65 mph down to about 40 mph in a very short time, trying to maneuver in between semi-trucks, going from the left lane to the right shoulder. This was not safe, my engine could have seized. After this, my engine emits a loud knocking sound. Once I arrived, the dealership recorded 2 quarts of oil in the engine. After the oil change, the knocking sound still remained. They indicated they would not recommend driving the vehicle until they investigated the knocking sound. They performed the rod-bearing clearance test, and indicated it passed. With the knocking sound, their recommendation is to not drive the vehicle, and to replace the engine, ($3880 with many reductions in price). They've indicated Hyundai corporate would decline to replace the engine because the tests are not favorable for replacement. I've submitted an escalated case to Hyundai (HMA), to look into this. In short, they have declined to do anything because my VIN, year/model, do not qualify for any extended warranties, or recalls, to require anything to be done. The vehicle is not safe to drive. I've done all maintenance, and am left to suffer.

My car has been burning oil, i took it for service at the dealership and all they did was change the oil and tell me to come back in 1000 miles, and to do this 3 times, however before the 1000 miles while driving with other passengers in the car my engine started over heating, i had to pull over immediately, i checked the oil dipstick and it already showed below the LOW line, at this point i am assuming there is no oil left in the engine

I was traveling on [XXX] Baton Rouge La. and Gonzales La. at 70 mph when I lost power to my vehicle , an alarm sounded saying it was the Hybrid control system failure, putting my safety at risk as I had to maneuver off the interstate and onto the shoulder during heavy traffic . I called State Farm insurance to get my vehicle towed to Ralph Sellers Hyundai in Gonzales La. where it is being repaired. In winter of 2018, my husband and I purchased a certified pre-owned 2017 Hyundai Sonata, and from the moment we drove it off the lot, it had an oil consumption problem. Then, in 2023, the spark plugs began failing. Each time this happens, the whole car shakes and stops running. We found out that Hyundai and Kia engines from 2009-2022 have major problems and that there are many class-action lawsuits against the manufacturer. We contacted both the dealer and Hyundai corporate to find out how we could fix the engine. We have small children and just wanted to repair our family car. The dealer refuses to fix it. They told us that it's Hyundai's problem. Hyundai acknowledged that we are eligible for a new engine but that until a certain rod fails and the whole engine implodes, they can't do anything about it. We have this in an email from corporate. We recently welcomed a new baby and had to buy another car because we felt this Sonata was not a safe choice to drive our children around. The solution to this problem should not be driving around in an unsafe car until it completely stops working. I'm hoping that the NHTSA can help me by sending out an inspector who can attest that this is a safety issue.

Excessive oil consumption Engine light stays on. Noise in Engine GDI 2.4

Dec 18, 2023

On February 27, 2023 we went to the Hyundai Dealer because our engine was leaking oil and we were told by Pep Boys that the Rear Main Seal was leaking. The Dealership scheduled us a service appointment three wks later, on March 23, 2023, when they replaced the valve cover gasket and the high pressure fuel pump gasket. On Jul 15, 2023, 2.5 months later, we return to dealership because our engine was leaking oil again and had leaked into the spark plugs tubes. They replaced the valve cover gasket again. Two weeks later on July 28, 2023, we went to the Dealership because the engine light turned on and the engine was misfiring while driving. They did nothing but added 3 quarts of oil because our oil was low despite us changing our oil 1 month prior (June 28, 2023). On September 25th, we returned to the dealership because our engine light turned on and our engine was violently shaking while making noise. At this point, we were frustrated and did not feel safe driving the car. We pleaded with the Service Manager to replace the engine from all the issues we have been experiencing including having to constantly add oil or change oil every 2.5 months. They held on to our car for 1 wk and gave us a rental. After inspecting our vehicle they replied that there was no engine issue detected so the Manufacturer will not replace the engine under the warranty. They only replaced the spark plugs and charged us with the service, parts & rental costs. It is now Monday, Dec 18, 2023, 1 wk before Christmas, and our engine light turned on once again while driving with our toddler in the vehicle. The engine not only misfired but did not allow us to accelerate beyond 30mph during high traffic hours on a road with a 50mph limit. The next service appointment available is 10 dys away, Dec 28, 2023, and they are asking us ~$400 to service the car. We feel helpless with the dealership/manufacturer, they are refusing to replace the engine. We fear that they are waiting for the warranty to expire.

Dec 7, 2023

First time I took my vehicle to the shop for over consuming oil they replaced the oil and cleaned all the parts. A few months after this my car would not accelerate properly and had a loud knocking noise in the engine and check engine light came on. After taking it to the dealer I was told I would need to replace the whole engine. I have proof of proper care done on the car but since I am second owner it is not covered in the original warranty. My car could have stalled and resulted in me and my family injured at the least. Hyundai knows about these issues and needs to recall the engines.

Dec 4, 2023

The vehicle has twice been disabled while driving due to “lost communication with hybrid module powertrain control module.” This breakdown is a significant safety hazard as the car loses power and coasts to a stop without any warning. The second time was on a 65 mph highway. Neither time has had any warning before the malfunction lights appeared. The first time occurred on 10/7, and the vehicle was towed to the dealership. Nothing was done besides clearing the trouble codes and test driving with the car, which returned at the end of October—the second time the breakdown occurred about a month later on 12/3. This second time, I removed the code myself on the roadside so as not to be in more danger, and I am currently awaiting an update from the dealership’s service department on their next steps after initially being told to just have it towed in again. Losing power without notice is incredibly concerning. I want to report this safety issue and determine my next steps to resolve it, as this has dramatically impacted my trust in the vehicle and its safety.

I have a 2017 Hyundai Sonata I bought brand new. My car started burning oil where I was having to put oil every time I put gas which is weekly. I did the oil consumption test where I drove it 1000 miles 3 times and it burned 1.75qts, 2 qts, and 2.75 qts. They are saying it needs a new engine.

Nov 23, 2023

About a year ago during an extended freeway drive I noticed my engine started to sound different. I checked the oil and found it was a quart low which had never happened before. I filled the oil to its proper level and continued driving. About 100 miles later I decided to check the oil again and found it had used about 1/4 quart. Later my check engine light came on and it showed a code related to failed exhaust sensors. Since then I have had to check and fill the oil every 100 miles or so and now carry 5 quarts of oil in the trunk. I also noticed that my exhaust leaves an oil mark on the ground if I leave the engine running for a couple of minutes. I checked for oil leaks and didn't find any. My miles per gallon reading is also down. Seems to use most oil during freeway driving. I worry the engine could fail at any time and have been forced to restrict my driving to short local trips. I had the knock sensor installed per Hyundai's recall. Hyundai refuses to cover an oil consumption test.

Nov 19, 2023

My Hyundai engine is burning through oil like crazy. Only at 84,000 miles, and everytime I get my oil changed (every 3,000) it is completely dry. This is a known problem with Hyundai, and there needs to be a recall on these vehicles. It is costing me a fortune, and the risk of having my engine fail/catch on fire is not something I want to be worried about everytime I drive my vehicle. Something needs to happen to get this issue resolved.

Was serviced by Hyundai in March 2023 to for oil sensor light but was really the oil was being burnt inside the engine Hyundai ran 2 oil consumption test in May 2023 and June 2023 which the car failed both. Service manger sent paperwork to Hyundai letting them know that engine was faulty because paperwork was summited with the wrong mileage the replacement of the engine has not happen. So Service manger has asked me to continue driving 1k miles and checking if engine is still burning oil which it still is I continue to write the service manger and sending pictures I can not drop my car off because we only have one car and they rarely have loaners and we are in bankruptcy so renting a car with a debt card is expensive trying to let people aware that this is a problem that Hyundai knows they have on these Sonata since 2015

Nov 1, 2023

Engine has a serious oil consumption problem. The engine has consumed 12 qts last 5,000 miles, or roughly burning 4 qts per 1,500 miles! Twice already it has rendered the engine dry despite frequent oil checks. Car also has routine oil changes every 3-5,000 miles. The safety concern is that the engine seizes in the middle of traffic. Also, because of the rapid nature of oil consumption, it requires travelling with emergency oil replacement supplies within the cabin. Fear is a collusion in the back (especially if stalled!) that could result in a fire, fueled by the supply of oil in the car. We keep at least a gallon (4 quarts), more if we are travelling anywhere more than an hour. We are a one car family and the safety issue is real. This is an ongoing problem since at least April of this year. Engine needs replacement.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the instrument panel flashed and then the vehicle became inoperable. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not able to restart and remained on the side of the road. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 149,000.

Vehicle Safety Complaint - 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport Engine Failure Dear NHTSA, I am writing to report a safety concern regarding my 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport, which I believe poses a risk to my safety and the safety of other road users. I have experienced the following issues with my vehicle: First Issue: Excessive oil consumption Must add a quart a week with minimal driving. Engine consumes an abundance of oil. Serious risk of internal engine damage & risk of the engine failure. Noticable oil covering spark plugs. I have to clean oil off the spark plugs weekly. Second Issue: Flashing check engine light Loss of power, engine stalling, misfiring, diminished ability to acclerate from a stop, and smelling gas. This is a traffic hazard, risk of life to occupants of vehicle, possible engine fire risk, and complete engine failure. Upon research, this is a MASS issue with owners of 2017 Hyundai Sonata's with a Theta II 2.4-liter engine. The Theta II 2.4-liter engine for Hyundai Sonata Hybrids has been recalled. However, Hyundai is very aware of the engine issue with non-hybrid 2017 Hyundai Sonata's. We have taken this to a AAA shop and the code issued was "catastrophic engine failure." I then took it too a Hyundai dealership and they said it was fine. I opened a case with Hyundai US and after months of back and forth, I get the same response, take it to the dealer. Frankly, I am getting nowhere with Hyundai. I feel they have recalled so many vehicles and their dealerships are so overwhelmed they are avoiding acknowledgement of this issue for non-hybrid models as long as possible putting the safety of Americans at risk. There a millions of consumers who have put their faith in the safety of Hyundai's engine for my make and model with this Theta II 2.4-Liter engine. Hyundai is 100% aware of these issues and hasn't issued a recall. Dealerships are flooded with vehicles and wait lists are long. American families need safe and reliable transportation.

The hybrid system failure. Chrck engine light is flashing. Abs system failure. Battery failure. Car can't go over 45mph, lost a job because of the issues. I'm afraid the car is going to blow up or catch fire. I'm afraid to drive it. The acceleration is barely there. It's like the car doesn't even wanna go. It sucks through gas like no other.

Oct 2, 2023

While driving the vehicle on the highway, the check engine light began flashing and the car immediately lost almost all power. We had enough power to pull off of the highway off-ramp where the vehicle began jolting before stalling on a side road. We started the car back up and had just enough power to drive into the hospital parking lot next to the side road, where we had it towed to the Hyundai dealer across the highway. That Hyundai dealer identified the Intake Manifold Runner as the culprit via engine fault code P200A00. This Hyundai dealer was also concerned with oil consumption as the car's oil was low even though it had been maintained according to Hyundai standards. They did an oil consumption test, but argued that it was normal, while refusing to repair or replace the Intake Manifold Runner, & only cleaned the Intake Manifold Runner, for which they charged. They gave us the car back and it continued to consume oil to the point where the dipstick was reading below the low line. The car also continued to jolt and have low power. This same Hyundai dealer told us to add oil to the engine and have it towed to them, which we did. They then claimed the car had too much oil, blamed us for it, and continued to refuse to investigate the issue any further. They gave us the car back after a lot of confrontational back and forth on their part where they agreed to change the oil and do another oil consumption test at no charge. A few weeks later, the check engine light came back on, the car lost power, and we called the same dealer back. The dealer refused to help us, so we took it to another dealer who found the same P200A00 fault code and replaced the entire Intake Manifold Runner under warranty without any questions asked, and at no charge. When we were still dealing with the first Hyundai dealer, we opened a case on them through Hyundai corporate, but corporate did nothing and did not care about the issue. Hyundai Corporate and one of their dealers ignored 21-EM-008H.

The car is consuming excessive amounts of oil. The engine has a knocking, tapping sound. Found out today the intake manifold is bad, which we all know is a very bad thing to go wrong. The engine has a very bad misfire. The car only has 53k miles. I own an 09 Sonata with 154k and I have never had a problem. This is why I continued with Hyundai. Also, the steering seems to tense up regularly. I am very worried about driving this vehicle. I have read hundreds of complaints regarding the excessive oil consumption. I feel you need to express the importance of these concerns to Hyundai

Sep 27, 2023

I own a 2017 Hyundai sonata base, I got the car at around 168k miles and it’s now sitting at around 180k the car burns oil like crazy, I had taken it to the Hyundai dealership in Gaithersburg, MD and they declined the oil consumption test under warranty since the extended warranty is only until 150k, then they tell me if my engine seized and was towed to a local dealer only then they would likely replace it due to its failure. That the engine would only be covered if it seized. This makes me nervous due to it could seize at any time or place, when I start my car I can hear a bad bearing and then it goes away after oil has been started to be moved around the engine more, a few seconds after starting the car. At last gave another call and same answer, if it siezed they believe Hyundai would replace it. Even when the oil is low no oil light appears, so I have to check it almost every time I go to drive as a full time student and full time employee this issue is really annoying. I just hope it if siezes it’s covered and I can get a rental to make it to work and university.

Upon inspecting the vehicle, the contact became aware that the engine oil level was extremely low, even though the vehicle had recently received an oil change three weeks prior to the failure. The contact stated that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 160,000.

The engine has started to burn oil from the inside of the motor was first noticed May 8th after the oil sending unit was replaced on the March 17th 2023 I thought it was faulty took to the dealership and all the oil had burned out in it. Dealership filled it up went about 1k miles and the oil light came on again too it back to the dealership they decide to do 2 oil composition test on the car. The care failed both times and under the 1k mile mark. Told Hyundai about and put in a claim they entered the wrong mileage on my car so it was denied for recall. I was told to continue to keep just adding oil for every 1k miles I have done this since July 1st 2023 and still is doing it an the engine keeps just burring the oil in the engine

Sep 10, 2023

I have been notified in the last three oil changes to my 2017 Hyundai Sonata that it's missing oil. Today, I went to an oil change even before the oil change was due (the car noted it was not due for another 819 miles or 3 days). There, they told me the car has an engine oil leakage and that it barely had engine oil. I told them, the car didn't even light up as needing oil. They told me to visit a local Hyundai dealer to have it checked ASAP, as they have serviced various Hyundai Sonata and Elantra models with the same issue.

HEV light comes on and the car starts slowing down & beeping. Unsure what the issue is but this started once the car had more than 100k miles on it

Aug 21, 2023

The car has an oil consumption problem as noted by dealership when following through with oil consumption test. The car has had several instances of stalling upon starting , car shakes and has no power. Yesterday I was 50 miles from home and car attempted to stall and it was 105 degrees outside. I am becoming afraid of this car. No, thankfully no fatalities at this time or I would not be sending in a claim if I were a fatality. There has been no attempt to fix the car which is still under warranty. Is the warranty not valid? One reason to buy the vehicle was for the warranty. I have records for oil consumption test.

Aug 16, 2023

On July 13, 3023, I was driving the vehicle and the pwwer steering light illuminated, but the light did go out. I took the vehicle to Stew Hansen Hyundai in Urbandale, Iowa, indicated the entire power steering column has got to be replaced. The parts hace been on back order, and as of today, August 16, the service center is still waiting for the parts to be delivered. The vehicle has slightly over 69,000 miles and 6 years. It's not covered under the warranty, Because that part is covered by the 5 year 50,000 warranty, so I have to pay an estimated $3,400. hundred dollars. I did share with the service agent that I received a power steering 15 years, 150,000 warranty extension notification, and provided him a copy, but waa told that was only for a specific part, and it did not apply to my repair, because my repair is for the entire power steering column. The reason why I'm paying this is because in June 2022, at 60,000 miles the vehicle's engine had to be replaced. That too took over two months to be fixed and returned to me, but repair as covered under warranty. Also, I'd be happy to share the information, but my vehicle is still in the shop for repair, depending on when the parts are received.

Aug 15, 2023

On 12/26/22, I was on a road trip and the car began vibrating violently on the PA turnpike. The car was losing power and would not accelerate. I was forced to stop on the highway with my kids in the car. Hyundai repaired the cylinders in the engine and then it began burning excessive oil, 1 quart ever 1000 miles. For months, I drove this car and as the oil got lower, the car hesitated while driving and ran very rough. On 7/4/23, transmission overheated and once again, car lost power on the road and left me stranded with my kids. Engine is burning excessive oil and causing other issues with car. Was not fixed when car died the first time and has now left me limping along and stranded twice. Car has been at shop since 7/5/23. Engine approved, but dealer can’t get parts. Hyundai won’t approve transmission until engine is replaced, leaving me to drive an unreliable car again when transmission and engine both have known issues. It’s unsafe to continually be stranded by a car that clearly has a bad engine. Would have been more cost effective for Hyundai to replace car at this point and still being given runaround by corporate.

MY 2017 HYUNDAI IS NOT LISTED ON THE RECALL FOR EXCESS OIL CONSUMPTION AND I AM TRYING TO FIND OUT WHY IT IS NOT INCLUDED. I HAVE TO ADD OIL EVERY WEEK TO MY CAR AND HAVE TO CHANGE THE SPARK PLUGS EVERY COUPLE OF MONTHS. I WOULD SIMPLY LIKE TO KNOW WHY MY 2017 HYUNDAI SONATA IS NOT INCLUDED ON THE RECALL AS WELL AS HOW I CAN GET IT INCLUDED SINCE IT IS ONE OF THE SONATAS WITH THE EXCESS OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND CONSIDERATION OF THIS MATTER.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel was stiff and the vehicle lost motive power. No warning light was illuminated. The contact parked and restarted the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was also diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced; however, the manufacturer declined the engine replacement due to Service Campaign 953 (ECM & Cluster Update - Engine Monitoring Logic Product Improvement) not being performed prior to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The contact stated that she had not received notification of the Service Campaign. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 106,238.

I have financed my Hyundai Sonata Sport 2017 in December of 2019. I have not had any issues until this current year of 2023. I have noticed that with every oil change that I receive that I would have to go back to the dealership or certified mechanic a month or two earlier. I personal checked for leaks but seen no signs of why I had to get constant oil changes. Recently, when driving on the highway speed limit at 70 mph and my car went to 60 mph. The engine light came on but no other warning. I stopped the car, check the oil level which was pretty low and topped it off. I let the car sit for a short while as I was only 5 mins away from home. Soon as I made it back, I check the oil level again which was in the line. Check for visible leaks. I figured my car shook as it did and idle at the speed do to a misfire with the spark plugs/coils which I had already replaced 2 months prior to the incident. I was able to use a car scanner from AutoZone to check for codes but there wasn't an engine light at all on the dashboard. There was only one code that did show which was P1326 but no engine light or flashing engine light. I then schedule an appointment for an oil change and to confirm that the engine light code was with Firestone Auto Care to analyze the issue. They did an overall check over on the car, checked for codes, and changed the oil in which they found no issues. With driving my car to test if there were any issues it completely shut down and did not want to start. They called me to tell me that the engine was locked. They tried turning the engine over multiple times, but nothing would start up. Due to not knowing what was going on with my vehicle I felt unsafe with driving it as it completely slowed down on the highway. As other cars where speeding by. It gave no indications prior to the incident that anything was wrong. I am waiting to see a Hyundai dealership to inspect my vehicle which they are booked until next month. My car is currently disabled.

At roughly 133,800 miles, the oil warning light began to appear, but sporadically. I took the car to my local Valvoline who relayed that the dip stick was basically dry. My last oil change was at 131,439 miles. Valvoline added 4 quarts of oil at 133,893 miles. That was on 01/03/2023. I have had one oil change since then. My current mileage is roughly 137,000 - I have had to add 5 quarts of oil and the dip stick still reads low. There are no signs of an oil leak, no excessive exhaust (blue or otherwise), or any visible leaks under the hood.

Car is burning an excessive amount of oil. After getting the oil changed I needed to add additional oil. Car is driving sluggish and won't pick up speed. In 2023 the car bucked, check engine light came on and the car failed to drive over 60mph. I took to Firestone to be repaired and they fixed the knock sensor. After a few weeks, the car bucked, check engine light came on and car would not drive over 60, they also informed me the car used too much oil since I drove it last, there was a service bulletin for the oil consumption and to take to Hyundai. Took to dealer for repair, they said engine consumption is fine. After a few days cars started becoming sluggish not picking up speed. I checked the oil - it was empty.

Excessive oil consumption

May 8, 2023

The engine is burning about 3 quarts of oil every 500 miles of driving. It is causing carbon to gunk up the spark plugs every month and a misfire will happen at random. I tried contacting the dealer and even though they have several complaints, they said they won’t do anything. I have brought it to several mechanics and they say the manufactured engine needs to be replaced.

Engine consumes way to much oil got oil changed and a week later it was almost empty when i checked. This has been an ongoing issue for many years already.

Apr 26, 2023

Engine is consuming lots of oil. There are recalls on Sonatas but mine is not included, although I have a 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport with a 2.4L Theta Engine produced in Alabama which are engines that are having defects with oil consumption. 2-3 months I was trying to get car into a dealership for inspection of engine because I kept having to add oil. They would not provide a loaner & I could not afford a rental at time or go without a car. In October 2022, I had to I take car to Hyundai in Trenton, NJ because engine light came on & car was jumping. Spark plug in cylinder 4 blew from low oil. On report from dealership that's exactly what is written on it. They replaced spark plug & got approval to start oil consumption testing. Had to drive 1,000 miles. Returned car & was missing 3 quarts of oil. Had to drive another 1,000 miles, 3 quarts of oil missing again. They performed top engine cleaning saying that could help eliminate the problem. I drove 1,000 miles after cleaning & was still missing 3 quarts of oil. In January 2023, dealership told me they'd put request through for a new engine. I called 1 month later giving plenty of time to have a response. They didn't put request through. Said I need to do more testing & had to leave my car there for a few days with no loaner provided. Why didn't they tell me this 1 month prior & why has no one called me to inform me of this. I can not afford a rental, miss work & my child miss school. We missed a ton since dealing with this issue & I've put out over $1,000 on rentals, oil, damages, deductibles, etc since this started. I contacted a Hyundai case manager & they are still going back & forth with dealership 2 months later. My car is obviously burning a lot of oil & after 3 tests & 6 months I should not have to go through this. In the last 1 1/2 months, I've had to replace spark plug in cylinder 1 twice & cylinder 4 once & constantly have to add oil. My cars shows ALL symptoms of the current issue with engines.

Hyundai has an active recall and open service bulletins for an ongoing issue with Knock Sensors in 2017 Sonatas (my vehicle is a 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport). Over the last 18 months... the vehicle has been in for service 6 times... 4 in the last 6 weeks... due to ongoing issues with the knock sensor causing the vehicle to go into "limp mode" and causing the vehicle to decrease speed to a max of 60mph. There is no pre-warning for when the sensor will trip and cause the issues... which means if a vehicle is on a highway traveling at a speed of 70mph or more, and the sensor trips... the vehicle will decrease speed down to 60mph maximum. The protocol I am aware of for the repairs... was a first step software update... 2nd step replacement of the sensor... 3rd step replacement of the engine. In 6 attempts to remedy the issue... Hyundai has refused to authorize the appropriate steps to complete the repairs and replace the engine, causing my vehicle to become a hazard on the highways without warning to myself as the driver, or other vehicles on the roadway. **Note, the most recent occurrence of this was 4/22/23.**

Purchased a used Hyundai Sonata in June 2020 when it had almost 57,000 miles on it. Got the car regularly serviced and provided receipts to Hyundai on the national level as well as the local dealership. Received the following claim number - Hyundai Motor America Case#: [XXX]. [XXX]is with the Dealership in Dallas Texas and they car is with his dealership. Have also been dealing with[XXX] at Clay Cooley Hyundai Mesquite [XXX]. The engine does not work and needs to be replaced. Hyundai should be responsible for replacing the engine. The car has only around 76,000 miles on it. Hyundai Mesquite is threating to tow the car and possibly have it junked if it is not picked up. I cannot afford to pick up a car that does not operate. I purchased my vehicle in November 2022 from Honda Dealership. It was making a noise and “drove funny” I asked them about it and I was reassured the vehicle was in 100% working condition and they were not allowed to sell “bad cars”. So, I let it go. Since I purchased the car I have maintained regular oil changes and service on it— I just bought the car! I have been getting oil changes a lot sooner than I should, and every-time I take it to the shop they say it’s bone dry. Current: my car recently stopped working without any warning at all. I got a diagnosis from the mechanic that my engine failed due to pistons and rods. I did some research and found my car listed for a recall for campaign 953. And I am not the only sonata owner experiencing this problem.

I was driving southbound on I429 approaching the Vineland Wintergarden (FL)exit. approximately .75 miles from exit, a bit of an uphill. I heard a ticking noise, then suddenly the car went silent. The screen lit up with every sensor flashing. It took me a few seconds to realize I was in potentially deadly trouble. The car began slowing from 70 MPH to maybe 25MPH as I crested the last hill. To add complications, that stretch is under construction and does not have any shoulder. I could see a wall of cars streaming ever closer in my rear view mirror. I believe my hazzard lights probably saved me from a crash before gliding the last 1/4 mile to the exit where I was able to finally pull over to safety.

On February 11, 2022, I took my car to the dealership because my oil light came on. I was told I had no oil in the engine. So they said to get an oil change and that would take care of the problem. Nope. It has not taken care of the problem. My car burns oil. I have taken it to 2 different Hyundai shops. One just kept changing the oil and never submit the paperwork until I got really upset about bringing my car back a month after having the oil change. No help. I have called Hyundai customer service no help at all. In January 2023 I went to start my car and it started jerking and shaking and spitting out oil threw the tailpipe. The car would not move. My garage door was covered with oil. I had it towed to another Hyundai dealership they kept the car for a week and told me that it needed a new spark. New wires because it was covered in oil. I'm out of $3000.00 including all the oil changes and the work that was done. Oh yeah, I was told to bring the car back after 1000 miles. I brought it back in March 2023. They started the oil consumption test. I was told to bring it back on that Thursday the 5th. I took my car back and the dealership would not accept my vehicle. Wouldn't let me leave it for my service guy nothing. I called the next day for my service guy and they said he didn't come in today. I even filed with the BBB Auto Line. I found that information in my 2017 owners handbook supplement did not help closed my case. They didn't even call or asked me any questions. No help. Stuck with a car I have no confidence in. I don't know if the engine is going to blow because the oil gets low or if it's going to sketch on fire because theirs no oil in it.

Hello, I would like to file a complaint my name is [XXX] I am having a translator help me to write this. He had immediate problems with the oil and smoke coming out of the car within the first week and went back to have an oil change they charged him money. The following week the same issue occurred with smoking and stalling of the car. He brought the car in for service and they tried to charge him almost $500 for a new gasket. The engine is consuming (burning) the engine oil at a excessive rate. Engine oil has to be added almost every 1000 miles. Talked to multiple mechanics and learnt that it is a common problem with Hyundai. Constantly checking the oil level and topping off is not what we expected when I bought the car.

Mar 17, 2023

UNKNOWN I’ve had to replace the knock sensor twice in my vehicle in less than 2 months, my paint on my car is also peeling off really bad.

Mar 14, 2023

bought the car used with 60K miles. Learned quickly it was consuming 1 qt of oil per month. I checked with Hyundai Corporate Customer Care and my local dealership. Dealership said needed to burn 1qt per 1000 miles before they would submit anything to corporate for possible warrantee issue. Monitored consumption. Now up to about 2 qts per month. Took it to the dealership and they said now beyond warranty mileage. They performed a computer update recall. Now the computer detects something going on the engine and forcing car into Limp Mode. Been on the phone with Corporate Customer Care and the dealership. They will do nothing. Customer care says to go to dealership. Dealership says to call Customer Care. There doesn't seem to be a way to talk to any decision makers to appeal for common sense and discretion instead of 100% by the book policy protocal. The dealership said the computer update recall cannot be reversed. So now I have a vehicle with an engine problem and in Limp Mode and Hyundai will do nothing. So discusted with Hyundai quality and customer service. I will never by a Hyundai again.

Car has been consuming insane amount of oil.The oil warning light hardly ever comes on and when it does it is always in between the oil changes. It doesn't even make it to the next scheduled oil change before the light finally comes on. When I check it when the light is on it is bone dry. Because of this I have started checking it every couple hundred or miles or so and every time it's bone dry and I have to add at least two quarts of oil, if not a total of five courts. I informed the dealership about this last year they performed the oil pressure check and told me that it was fine. I insisted that oil must be leaking somewhere, they checked and said that there was no oil leak. Last week my car started sputtering, and then the engine light came on. It did this in the past and it needed a new starter. They replaced that but this time, they check the engine and they say that I need a new engine. I told them I'm not surprised because every time I check there's never any oil in there in the warning light never goes off. Yet they have told me in the past that it does not have a problem? I am currently waiting to see if Hyundai will honor their warranty. This is a hazard if they cannot tell if there is a faulty sensor or oil leak but the car continuously is consuming oil to the point that it's dry and the owner is not notified. I have kept up the oil changes and this is all happening in between the schedule changes. This can cause fire, vehicle disablement in the middle of driving and other safety issues. If you look at other reports, this is common across the Sonatas yet Hyundai has not issued a recall regarding the oil consumption.

My engine is consuming oil at a high rate of more than a quart per 1000 miles. I went 3k between oil changes had 2 quarts added at about 1500 miles and was still low at the end of the 3k. Hyundai claims this is normal. I had previously completed the oil consumption test and Hyundai claims there is no issue. The oil pressure light started going on around July of 2021. Between the oil consumption tests and then additional driving it is 18 months later and not resolved.

Ever since I have had my car there has been a wind sound like some this is dragging under my car! Been to dealership multiple times and they tell me that’s how these cars sound! Now oil is disappearing right after and oil change! They say my oil pan bolts were stripped out! Well the Hyundai dealership is the only people that have done my oil changes! Tried to charge me for that! I get an engine diagnosis check done and they tell me nothing is wrong with my car! Before I could make it home engine light was on! Took it back now they saying engine manifold! Want to charge me for that! Now car won’t go over 20 mph! White car paint has chipped from the front roof and hood of car! Driving I see multiple white vehicles with paint chipped in the same areas of the vehicle! Call corporate they know about the the issue. They want to spot paint the car! If you spot paint it doesn’t fix the growing areas of peel up! There is no reason a 2017 and newer models should have huge metal spots for paint peeling already! Only on white Hyundai Sonatas mainly! I have called corporate about every issue with my car and they seem to not care!

My car was consuming a lot of oil. Hyundai dealership of Spartanburg,SC performed several oil consumption tests. Later I was advised to do an engine cleaning which was about $300. That didn’t resolve the issue. I was then told a piston was broken and couldn’t be fixed to just “wait till the engine blows out” and the motor company will pay for engine replacement. I use this vehicle to transport my four young daughters and fear when and where my engine will go out on us!

Sep 30, 2022

The GDI 2.0L and 2.4L engines consume outrageous amounts of oil. Oil has to be added to the vehicle five times between Full Synthetic oil changes totaling almost $100 for just oil to refill the engine. For those who don’t check their oil level often, the dipstick will appear empty. That can lead to engine seizing, an overall decrease in power, and the breaking down of parts due to metal-on-metal impact. The engine also goes through several spark plugs at once. The amount of carbon deposit on the spark plugs is outrageous as well. The electrodes were completely burnt as if they had never been replaced since manufacturing.

Engine is consuming oil at a very fast rate. just changed oil a few weeks ago and when checked oil recently, nothing on dip stick. Had to add over 3 quarts of oil. So far, need to keep adding over a quart a week. As to safety, feels like engine wants to keep stalling when in light traffic. Car has been checked for oil leaks, none found. No MFG, police, insurance has inspected. When oil was so low, not even showing any on dip stick, no engine or oil light ever comes on.

Hybrid system failed, lost power while driving on freeway going 65 m/h during rush hours, RPM gage went down to 0, most instrument light weee lit on dashboard. Speed went all the way down to 40 m/h pressing the gas all the way down. Hybrid system warning light was flashing. Could have been hit by other vehicles on freeway I had to put my hazard flashing signal and wait for the right moment to pull my car off the road and to emergency lane to stop. The first time car was towed to dealer. And dealer was able to confirm the Problem. The spent 2 weeks at dealer until the claimed they had to contact the manufacture and ended up replacing a wire harness they thought water got into it, paid over $600 for this fix. Few months later same problem they ended replacing some sensors due to a recall. A week later happened again all 3 time on the freeway. The check engine light was on few months prior to these issue and took to dealer multiple times since was still under warranty. But the problem kept coming back. They replace fuel injector then coil pack, the 3 time I was told the engine needs to be flushed and that not covered under warranty. Not long after that the major issues with the hybrid system 3 times

This vehicle has excessive oil consumption. I have 77k miles and I am going through 1.5 qt oil every 1000 miles. After 1500 miles my oil is so low that the engine misfires and fires a code. The dealer will not admit there is an issue even though multiple people have reported this issue and there is a class action lawsuit on the same issue.

The check engine light came on and wouldn't accelerate normally. The speed was delayed and cutting back and wouldn't pass 40 mph. Upon taking it to a local shop it had to be taken to the buying location by road side assistance. After the service department checked into the problem it now needs a new engine. They stated there were metal shavings in the motor. This was transferred by a known problem in the 2.4 L motor that hyundai has put in their vehicles with problematic bearings. This happened within 2 months of buying this vehicle. We Can't drive it at all now so it's still at the shop.

Sep 5, 2022

The Abs brakes and traction control go in and out and affects the brakes while driving, I know there been reports of fire but for some reason my car is not in the recall, same thing with the air bags lights come on showing faulty air bags and on scanner tools but not recalled even though Hyundai knows about these issues. Now for engine I went to have my engine looked at 2 times for oil consumption and all they did was a combustion chamber cleaning twice which both failed in less the 8100 miles so when I took it back for another oil consumption test for the 3rd time today, the engine light came on, it started knocking, lost power and riding rough. Well, they did an engine scanner test and suspect faulty rings allowing oil into the combustion chamber and fouling my new sparks plugs that was installed less then 10000 miles ago, now they tell me I need a new engine and refuse to replace it for free even though they said they fixed the problem before with the engine cleaning now the same part is the problem and now, I am without a car to drive! They tell me I can lose power while driving which could lead to a car accident.

At first it was knocking softly and progressively getting louder than the engine blew on my way picking my son up

Aug 26, 2022

On or about August 13 2022, I notice the oil engine light come for a second, then it went off. After parking vehicle at my home and letting the engine cool off a bit and oil to settle, I checked dipstick only to find out that is was showing DRY no oils whatsoever, I then bought 1 qt of oil and added it to engine still dip stick showed dry and not a drop of oil on it. With still 3,000 miles to go before my next oil change, I decided to take it to PepBoys for a new oil change. After one week dip stick was showing oil on the low side and this time the metal on the stick showed whiteish, like it had been over heated. after this decided to take it to dealership GOSH HYUNDAI In Hemet 92545. I was told it would take 2 days to do some checks and get it ready for an oil consumption test. That is drive vehicle 1000 miles then take it in for another inspection (hopefully 1 day) then getting it back, drive another 1000 miles, then take back for another inspection. Being this my only Vehicle at this time, I am not sure why it takes so long to figure this out. OH did I mention Hyundai headquarters (I'm guessing) has to approve the oil consumption test, otherwise I am out a vehicle and have to pay for repairs. Not too mention the brake fluid reservoir is doing the exact same thing, fluid is being completely replaced every month to month and a half, by replace I mean adding a full reservoir worth of fluid because it seems to be evaporating. I am on the the third time adding fluid to this vehicle after GOSH Hyundai worked on my brakes (10000 miles a go). But this one I will have to pay 165 dollars for them to check it out. Nothing was said about me paying for engine oil issue check, plus they had me sign a affidavit to make sure I was the only owner on vehicle witch I am...So now the waiting game begins and to wait until someone makes a decision about fixing this issues?!!

It’s has taken 15,279 miles, 8 months, 8 oil consumption tests, a shitty service provider, service provider minions doing his job, worried everyday driving around my car that the engine would fail, set on fire or the engine would sputter and die on the freeway; to today being told they would have my vehicle 4-6 hours to do a complete engine walk through. Thank god I hadn’t left the lot 45 minutes after dropping off my vehicle getting called and told they will need my vehicle for 12 hours!!! I asked to see the higher up manager today; (who didn’t haven time to show his face) but could clearly get me a brand new 2022 Hyundai Tucson with 4600 miles on it for rental. Hyundai do better! I’ve played the game, now it’s time to fix my vehicle that is your duty under the 100k miles power train warranty. I have personally noted each event since March 2nd when I realized this was going south

So this morning I was on my way to work and boom once again my engine light came on blinking so my car started stalling and slowing down and went to shaking while I was on the highway so I pulled over because this not the first time experience this 2 days prior battery light red oil light and engine light came on when I brake at a red light and car wouldn't move but anyway cut the car off luckily it wasn't busy on this Sunday morning. I turned the car back on engine light was still blinking so now I have to make a hard decision because my car has been tow so much for engine issues that my insurance company sunt me a letter because they was concern about me needing a tow so much so they had to reach out so I called someone to have thm follow me since I didn't make it that far from home, so with my cautious lights blinking doing 20mph on the highway light still blinking car stalling and kept slowing down thn jerk forward like it gain life again but still while u driving the gas pedal feel forced like u putting pressure on the engine forcing it to put out power, finally getting off the highway good thing round corner from home stop at the red light when light turn green I press the pedal car shook a little and went to stalling but was moving slow turned the corner house right there soon as pulling in driveway car stalled and completely slowed down and put it n park went to vibrating but yes engine light still on blinking, was only 10 min away from home but that issue is dangerous and did happen to me before 6 months ago car was towed to Hyundai dealership kept my car nearly 3 weeks I paid and got my invoice still for proof that need to be a recall because that should not be happening again they did tell me my engine may need to be replace if it happens again which is sad because this car is only 5 years old I had the most issues with this car and both there brake lights go out every 3 months at the same time ISSUE NEED TO BE RESOLVED ASAP......

The oil light would blink on, then go back offstarting abiut 7/15/22. We checked the oil, but it was fine. This happened for about 2wks, w/ the light never staying on or staying on & flashing. However, the oil consumption started increasing, needing more oil each time, but no indication of a leak. Then the check engine light started flashing & car went into limp mode w/engine knocking. This happened suddenly in traffic, which could have caused a wreck d/t sudden loss of power & inability to reach speed of surrounding vehicles. At this time, the oil light was not present, but 3qt of oil needed to be added in order to limp the car home. This was 7/39/22. Computer check gave code 1326. Engine failure seems immenent. Vehicle is available for inspection request. The issue has not been confirmed by dealer, but we have seen similar complaints on YouTube.

IT is burning oil and am very afraid to drive this car before it catches on fire....I am hoping the dealer will replace the engine or Hyundai Motor company to give us warranty without the hassle...

Jul 22, 2022

It's knock sensor issue code was showing since 85000 mileage, dealer just got rid of the code and said can drive safely. Then again at 101000 mileage knock sensor code and Hyundai dealer said software is updated can drive safely. Also it's engine oil burning faster that we keep on topup oil all time. Then at after 108000 mileage my car started overheating, & it's engine seized. Now Hyundai don't want to fix such problems. I don't know maybe it get fixed, then catches fire on highway can cause death.

2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport engine is consuming oil at 85,000 miles and has done so since early 2022. I have had the vehicle to the dealer on numerous occasions regarding this issue; oil light coming on and immediately needing 3 quarts or more to fill it back up. The latest encounter was 7/17/2022 when the check engine light came on and when oil was checked, it was on the "L" level yet again and this was less than 800 miles since the complete oil change where 5 quarts of oil was inserted. This engine is known for oil consumption and at 85,000 miles it should not be doing it at this rate. Another consumption test is being requested.

Driving on the highway at speed, the car decelerates to 30 mph and won't go any faster. This is the second time it happened. I took it to the dealership in September 2022, and it sat there for 6 weeks before they looked at it and said there wasn't anything wrong with it, and reset some fault. I took the vehicle back to the dealership on May 12, and there is no estimate of time for when it will be looked at again.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that two weeks after purchasing the vehicle, the oil light illuminated the instrument panel. He also stated that a burning oil odor would emit from the engine while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where an oil consumption test was performed upon approval by the manufacturer. Two oil consumption tests were performed on the vehicle and both results showed that the engine was consuming one quart of oil every 400 miles. The vehicle failed both oil consumption tests and the manufacturer stated that the engine needed to be replaced; however, the manufacturer would only cover 65% of the cost of a new engine. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 56,000.

While driving home my engine light came on for 5 minutes and went off and my car started to stall in the middle of traffic and produced a loud and hard knocking noise. When coming to a stop sign and trying to accelerate the car didn’t want to accelerate at first and when it did the knocking got louder and the car started to shake. Upon getting it diagnosed, results are the rod bearings in cylinder 3 AND 4 . Car is also losing oil somewhere somehow.

APRIL 28, 2022 THE ENGINE. IT IS REPLACED AND STILL AT ANTWERPEN HYUNDAI IN BALTIMORE MD. AT GREAT RISK BECAUSE THE CAR WOULD LOSE ALL FORWARD POWER AND REDUCE SPEED FROM60 MILE PER HOUR ON A BELTWAY WHERE THE TRAFFIC MOVES VERY FAST AND I WOULD QUICKLY GO DOWN TO 20 MILES PER HOUR. THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED BY 2 CERTIFIED MECHANICS BEFORE TAKEN TO ANTWERPEN WHERE THE 3RD DIAGNOSIS WAS PROVEN A NEED TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. I AM NOT SURE IF IT WAS INSPECTED BY THE MANUFACTURER BUT THE SERVICE DEPT. AT ANTWERPEN WERE IN TOUCH WITH THE MANUFACTURER BECAUSE THEY APPROVED REPLACING THE ENGINE. THERE WERE NO-(NONE) CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS BUT IT DID SAY CHANGE THE OIL. I DID CHANGE THE OIL EVEN THOUGH IT WAS ONLY 1200 MILES SINCE THE OIL HAD BEEN CHANGED. THE POWER FAILURE OCCURED TWO TIMES PRIOR TO THE FINAL TIME AND I TOOK IT TO JENKINS HYUNDAI IN LEESBURG FLORIDA (WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR) AND THEY CONTINUED TO REPORT NO PROBLEMS. THE PROBLEM 1ST APPEARED WITHIN THE FIRST 30 DAYS OF THE PURCHASE ON MAY 22, 2021. UPON RECEIVING THE CAR BACK AFTER ENGINE REPLACEMENT THE CAR WAS BLOWING BLACK SMOKE (LOTS OF IT) I TOOK IT BACK TO ANTWERPEN AND THEY FOUND THE TURBO WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED (BECAUSE THE MANUFACTURER HAD THEM -POWER CLEAN?-THE TURBO. THE MANUFACTURER AGREED TO PAY TO REPACE THE TURBO. HOWEVER UPON CLOSER INSPECTION THE CATELETIC CONVERTOR WAS RUINED BECAUSE OF ALL THE OIL THROWN . THEY AGREED TO PAY FOR THE CONVERTER BUT I HAD TO PAY FOR THE LABOR (?) IT TOOK 2 WEEKS (WHILE I HAD TO PAY FOR MY TRANSPORTATION) TO COMPLETE.I WAS TO PICK UP THE CAR ON THE 27TH OF APRIL,2022 AND I DID. IT IS STILL BLOWING LOTS OF BLACK SMOKE. ANTWERPEN SAID DRIVE IT FOR A FEW WEEKS AND THE SMOKING WILL STOP. I DROVE 13 MILES AND THE CAR START TREMBLING- ALL OVER SHAKING. NO FLAT TIRE. THE ENGINE IS RUMBLING AND SHAKING THE CAR. Last year in March 2021 I have a problem with the oil and the engine. The oil is burning internal and the engine wouldn't go pass 60 miles. This was reported the McGrath City Hyundai in chicago. A whole year they had me to bring my car in to them saying that hyundai need pictures and other stuff. I was told to keep driving my car 1000 miles and that did no good at all. Every since then my oil light been coming on and off. Now my engine light has pop on on today April 17, 2022. I was told by the Manger at McGrath City Hyundai that I was decline for a engine. I have been getting my oil change with them for the longest . I feel discriminated against because I am a female and they had me bring my car back and forward up there to keep topping off the oil in the car and know there is a problem with the engine, they kept my car for two weeks and didntgive me a rental and the car is still doing the same thing loosing oil there was a recall on Hyundai Engine it's been all in the papers and on the news they also sent out recall letters and they are refusing to replace my engine

Apr 16, 2022

I have a 2.4L 4 cylinder enginr.lI noticed that I would get my oil change and a few weeks later my oil light would come on and I would have to add oil. This had been going on for the past year with no one able to provide an explanation. About a month or so ago, my car began to violently shake,, loss acceleration and my check engine light came on. A mechanic looked at my vehicle advised he saw oil on all my spark plugs and said the 3rd chamber was losing compression. Doing some research I found out that the engine in my car has a recall for defective connecting rod bearing issues. The dealership is telling me that is not the issue even though the have not broken down the engine as the issue could be due to the recall....I need help I am without a car and my warranty has expired.

Apr 6, 2022 Fire

The Hyundai was started, feint knocking was heard. Progressed louder as vehicle accelerated, engine then stalled, check engine light and oil pressure light turned on and traction control disengaged as the vehicle erupted into a rolling blaze

Apr 3, 2022 Fire

Vehicle’s engine began to emit a knocking sound that would increase in volume and speed as engine progressed in speed. Engine suddenly lost power, check engine light began to flash and traction control disabled itself. Vehicle was pulled over and turned off when it immediately began to rapidly self immolate over the course of minutes while the power to the engine was completely disabled.

Mar 28, 2022

The vehicle is available upon requested inspection. Since I bought the car in 2019 it has made a rattling sound like the engine is knocking. Not a severe knocking, however, it does make a clicking/rattling sound in idle, occurs more rapidly while accelerating, then sounds like a muffled diesel while the engine’s torque is dropping when shifted into neutral coasting on the road. Oil has been changed in its due time. Between 3k - 7k as scheduled. Independent service provider didn’t think it was normal and recommend I check for recalls. I asked Hyundai dealership representative and said it’s a normal sound. Other vehicles I’ve driven don’t sound like this. Even an older ‘96 Buick sounded smoother running. Nothing has failed, caused an injury or accident. Engine light has recently come on. Temperature is hotter, according to the gage, than we’re it has typically sat for the past couple years. The potential risks increased, not knowing what can happen, when the temp rose and engine light comes. . . . . . . . . . . This, aside from previously stated concern, alarm activates (mostly during the rainy cloudy weather) when manually unlocking the car. Having to relook and unlock to silence alarm.

Mar 21, 2022

Vehicle seemed to burning oil. Losing oil a month after oil change. Emission issues, rattling and fumes when running.

Mar 18, 2022

The oil burns way to fast in these cars because of the engine there should definitely be a recall to asses this situation as I’m not the only one with this problem. This is a problem for Hyundai owners as you have to replace your oil even when the car states you have about 3K MILES left before a refill.

Mar 3, 2022

At just over 100,000miles my check engine light came on while driving down the highway and the vehicle went immediately into limp mode. Attempted to replace knock sensor, attempt did not remedy the issue.

Feb 25, 2022

My car was driving just fine then it wasn’t accelerating right and it went into limp mode. I was about 12 miles from home. I made it but the next day on the way to the dealership the engine just died about a mile from my house. Engine light came on. I always get my oil changes on time. Dealership says engine oil is sludged due to negligence. No negligence I believe faulty engine caused containments and have very bad oil consumption. My theta engine was left out of the campaign and my warranty was denied.

Feb 18, 2022

In May 2021,the car began using excessive oil powered down with engine knocking, ticking, and missing when acceleration was tried. We regularly change the oil and it was using a quart of oil every 2,000 miles. We took it to Hyundai and they reset the chip. In February of 22, the engine began knocking and ticking. It powered down and the engine light came on. We had put oil in it over the weekend as we have to do now weekly as it is using excessive oil. After only 500 miles, it powered down in safety mode and began knocking and ticking with no acceleration. We had the oil changed early, but it did not help. I was in safety mode for 76 miles on my way home from work. It has 163,000 miles on it and is only 6 months from pay off.

Feb 16, 2022

On January 8, 2022, I called McGrath City Hyundai and Genesis of Oak Park to ask about any recent recalls on my vehicle due to my engine leaking out oil after putting in new oil. Prior to that, I had a mechanic look at it in case the oil change place made a mistake on their end and found they were not at fault. So after the Hyundai dealership told me there was 2 recalls that she can see from her end based on my VIN, 1 for the engine and the other for the trunk, we set up an appointment to try and repair the vehicle because at this point the vehicle was not drivable and we had to get it towed. We also had no prior knowledge that there was any recall due to the fact we bought the vehicle in May of 2020 from a dealership called Toyota of Lincoln Park. After bringing in paperwork to Hyundai in person for proof we have been maintaining the car and after waiting weeks for our car to be fixed, we are being told they cannot fix the engine due to the fact that the recall was from 2018 and the previous owners did nothing to resolve the issue. We were also told that the dealership that sold us the vehicle cannot look up recalls from other vehicles and only can do it with Toyota. The car had already almost failed on the expressway and could have caused an accident had we not pulled off to the exit. And we were fortunate enough to get it to our home. The engine wasn't locked up and we feel now it might be while in the hands of Hyundai. Hyundai has denied the claim to have it serviced due to it being a 2018 recall and all we want is the car running again. We cannot afford to get another car and it is our only means of transportation.

Feb 9, 2022

Purchased this car brand new in 2017 from a Hyundai dealership. Started having issues with it 2 years later and up to now. The engine light is consistently illuminated, the oil light comes on within about a few weeks of having the oil changed with just local neighborhood driving and I have to have my oil changed every 4-6 weeks when even just driving no more than 20-30 miles a week, the mechanic who does my oil changes stated there is no oil leak but the oil stick keeps coming up BONE DRY which results in costly oil changes on a extremely regular basis. The engine has been and continues to do a very hard almost violent knocking that is so strong it can be seen from the outside of the vehicle and has affected the way i have to drive the car. The engine hesitates to take off and according to several mechanics who have looked at the vehicle it keeps misfiring because of oil pooling in the spark plugs that has been changed on a regular monthly basis now. There is a large amount of smoke that pours from the exhaust when accelerating. This vehicle is a hazard to drive and contacting Hyundai although this model and year is included in the engine recall, yields nothing but a pain as they have informed me, that my “Vin” out of all of the other 2017 Hyundai Sonata’s isn’t included in the nationwide recall of my particular vehicle…. Just my luck? I think not, Hyundai needs to acknowledge the multitude of hazards that they have manufactured and have out on road and properly offer assistance to these vehicle's owners to rectify this issue.

Feb 7, 2022

The engine lost power as driver was getting ready to go onto a major toll way, then when was able to regain a little power, was unable to go over 30mph. When was able to get to an independent repair shop to check it, engine knock code appeared, the check engine light only came on once the engine lost power, not prior to. The shop checked oil and the dipstick came out dry! They did not see any obvious leaks, and suggested it be towed to dealership. When towed to nearest dealership the car has been sitting for a week and a half and still not be looked at. The oil had been changed a few months prior and was not close to the miles needed for next change. This could have caused a fire for the car, it could have caused an accident if was not able to get to side of road. This is similar If not exactly the same that has happened to other Hyundai Sonata owners and is causing a lot of hardship for our family to be without this car or a loaner! This appears to be the recall on Hyundai engines that’s happening to similar models.

Feb 6, 2022

Bought the car in June ‘21 and in Oct it started having engine problems (very low oil , shaky idle and hard transitioning gears) When I took to Hyundai Suntrup, 1 spark plug had bust and was covered in oil and dealership couldnt tell why . They replaced spark plug ran air induction service and sent me on my way . Come end of december and car was still having issues w low oil and shakey gear transitions so they gave me a upper engine cleaning service as well as an oil change . Now my oil pressure light keeps going off and I steadily burn through oil . At almost 2x the normal rate because when I last got the oil changed was only 1.5k miles ago .

Feb 4, 2022

I have a failing engine that excessively consumes oil at the rate of approximately 1qt per 500 miles. The notorious theta2 2.4ltr sonata engine has spewed so much oil into the top half of engine that it had infact so severely damaged the catalytic converter that it became a plug in the exhaust system. The oil consumption issue has destroyed the entire cars engine system and it was infact a ticking time bomb that Hyundai has denied multiple times to repair. After the catalytic converters reached 1700' and Hyundai indicated that it was fine nothing to worry about, we had to physically remove the catalytic converter packing and alow for the engine fumes to exit the car properly, they previously had mainly entering the passenger cabin or they were pushed back into the engine. I according to Hyundai have no warranty on the car, I owe money to my bank Hyundai and the dealership have been paid they have no problem letting me get stuck with a lemon. It's been to the dealership multiple times, campaign 953 engine knock sensor was done on 10/08/21 it has mysteriously found its way out of my car records. Tampering editing, falsifying documents are all illegal and wrong. Since the papers showed that it was done it should have extended the warranty to 10 yes/ 120,000 and I should be reimbursed for my rental fees for being unable to drive my car any distance thousandths of dollars into oil, not being able to get a safety inspection. missing multiple days of work, depreciation ( the dealership that sold me this car 18mo ago valued it at $17,000 09/20, and on 10/08 gave me a $6,000 trade in value) lastly a car in good running condition that is safe for us to use. HYUNDAI IS SELLING DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS AND GETTING AWAY WITH IT EVEN AFTER BEING TAKEN TO COURT AND HAVING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN FINES AND PAYOUTS. They are stealing from hard working family's that are already struggling to get by.

Ive tried twice unsuccessfully to have my hyundai sonata recall repairs fixed. First time they said that they were going to order the part, this was around november 2021. Never did get that call. So I called them again to set up an appointment, they gave me an appointment date of 01/26/2022. On that day they told me that they had to cancel because once again they have to order the part.In the mean time my car is running bad with a dealership neglecting this situation, without any concern to how serious and dangerous the outcome could be as described in the court order. The dealership is in Modesto ca. Central Valley Hyundai.

The engine is stalling and shut off at a traffic light. Using oil on a weekly basis. Gas mileage is not efficient at all. No warning the oil pressure is low. The latch on trunk had to be replaced weeks after I purchased the car but I had to replace it cause it would not shut. And now there is a recall.

Manufacturer Recall Number 209 NHTSA Recall Number 21V727000 Incident date: June 15, 2021 While driving on the freeway at approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light flashing on the instrument panel, oil could be seen spraying out the back of the car onto traffic which put other drivers/vehicles at risk of an accident. We pulled over into a dirt parking lot, noticed a puddle of oil underneath the car, and then lifted the hood to see oil sprayed all over the engine compartment. I had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer where it remains in their possession as of today which in my opinion is too long to wait without a car, 6 months later from the incident. The manufacturer was notified of the failure June 16th and they informed me that the vehicle did not qualify for any recalls or warranty programs. The vehicle VIN later showed up on the recall campaign in September. Hyundai USA offered to replace the engine at no cost which I am thankful for that so far. However, after the engine replacement, I was told the car would not start, and will require a new battery module and hybrid battery, and that I must pay 40% of the parts and labor at $2776. I believe these parts suddenly failing are directly related to the engine failure incident, and should be part of the recall campaign. My car has yet to be repaired due to backordered parts. I've submitted rental car fee receipts of over $3500 to date without reimbursement because I'm told that it is their policy to only review rental receipts for reimbursement after the repair ticket is closed, with no possibility of interim reimbursement. The Hyundai case manager has told me there is nothing more that they can do, not willing to discuss with another department or Manager, no escalation path forward, and that all I can do is file this complaint with the NHTSA per the recall campaign notification.

WHEN I WAS DRIVING, THE CAR BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN I WAS NOT ABLE TO ACCELARETE AND THE CAR TURNED OFF. I PUSHED THE START BUTTON TO TURN ON THE CAR AND I SAW SMOKE CAME FROM THE HOOD. ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC IT WAS THE STARTER. WE PUT A NEW STARTER , THE CAR DIDNT STAR AND THE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE HOOD AGAIN. I DECIDED TO SEND THE CAR TO HYUNDAI DEALER. AFTER TWO WEEKS THEY STILL DIDN'T CALL ME TO KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE CAR. I AM STILL WAITING FOR.

Nov 3, 2021

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated upon starting the vehicle, the oil warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the oil filter was fractured. The contact stated that the dealer replaced the oil filter and the oil was refilled however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and an unknown part was replaced. The contact stated that the failure recurred, and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of oil. The dealer informed the contact that they would perform an oil consumption test and she would need to bring the vehicle back every 1,000 miles. The dealer’s report was sent to the manufacturer and the manufacturer opened a case. The manufacturer informed the dealer that the case was closed and advised the dealer to complete an engine cleaning. The engine cleaning was completed; however, the dealer informed the contact that she would need to complete another oil consumption test. The dealer diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The dealer advised the contact that they had sent another report to the manufacturer and the manufacturer had requested pictures of the subframe of the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 76,000.

Engine oil found to be low at multiple oil changes. So started checking levels 1000 miles after oil change and found oil to be low already at that point. The last check, only 1300 miles after oil change, found vehicle to be down 1.5 quarts. Available for inspection upon request. Because we are checking and replacing the missing oil at the early timeframes of 1000 miles instead of at 7500 miles, no one is in immediate danger (beyond my bank account). The service center has been monitoring the issue for some time. They checked seals, gaskets, and replaced them to be sure they were not the issue. The oil levels still decrease. Upon speaking to a Hyundai rep, he (the manufacturer) claims there is no issue but I should get a diagnostic check up at dealer. I am scheduling one this week. Issues with the local dealer is they charge too much, suggest repairs that are not necessary, and have extended service wait times of at least 3 hours even though I have an appointment. There have been no warning lamps, messages, or actual failures. I am trying to prevent reaching that stage. I do know that my engine is the same one they recalled from earlier models. Those engines were having high oil consumption issues which help lead to more serious safety issues with time. I am wondering how the same engine, with apparently the same issues, was allowed to continue to be used.

Recall on my 2017 Hyundai Sonata was repaired 9/13/2019, purchased the vehicle with financing on 7/16/2021. On 8/18/2021, had vehicle towed back to the dealership and explained the issue. Engine knocking, tire pressure and engine lights on, frequent stalling, turning off, smell of gas and something burning, loss of power to the engine, car could not accelerate to 60 MPH. The dealership had my car till 9/20/2021, power train warranty was denied and voided, no loaner car was given, was not offered any reimbursement for car rental by dealership and Hyundai corporate. Although car is included in Theta class action lawsuit. I was correct about issue with engine, but the dealership replaced engine with used parts. No later than five days after having my car back, the engine and tire pressure lights came back on, car is tugging, and the engine noise is louder. I don’t believe that they replaced the engine with OEM parts.

IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM AND MILLIONS OF UNSUSPECTING AUTO PURCHASERS SHOULD BE MADE AWARE. NOT EVEN 2000 MILES INTO MY MAINTENANCE INTERVAL THE ENGINE IS DRY. THE OIL LAMP TURNS ON. THERE IS NO LEAKS FROM THE ENGINE. I KNEW THIS WAS GONNA BE A PROBLEM TO FIX AND I KNEW IT WOULD BE VERY EXPENSIVE. I JUST BASICALLY CHANGED MY OIL MORE OFTEN. I WAS DRIVING IT FROM WORK AND THEN IT SUDDENLY STARTED IDLING ROUGH AND IT STARTED STUTTERING REAL BAD. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM AND THEY TOLD ME A CYLINDER IS BLOWN AND IT COULD POSSIBLY NEED A NEW ENGINE. I'VE ONLY HAD THIS CAR FOR 2 YEARS!! AND I'M DEALING WITH HAVING TO REPLACE AND ENGINE ON A 2017 HYUNDAI SONATA I HAVE KEPT VERY WELL MAINTAINED. THIS CAR HAS ONLY TRAVELED IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA. EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. I BOUGHT THE CAR IN USED CONDITION BACK IN JUNE 2019 WITH APPROXIMATELY 82,000 MILES ON IT. IT CURRENTLY HAS 125,000 MILES ON IT AND ONLY RECENTLY HAVE I BEEN EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE. I CHANGE THE OIL ON THIS CAR EVERY 5,000 MILES OR SO SINCE I DO PLENTY OF COMMUTING FOR WORK. THE LAST TIME I TOOK MY CAR TO GET THE OIL CHANGED BEFORE I NOTICED THE PROBLEM WAS IN DECEMBER 2020. I NEVER BOTHERED TO CHECK THE OIL BECAUSE I HAD COMPLETE CONFIDENCE THAT THE OIL WAS TOPPED OFF AT EVERY OIL CHANGE. HOWEVER, I STARTED NOTICING THAT THE CAR FELT FORCED WHENEVER I TRIED TO ACCELERATE. I ALSO STARTED NOTICING A SUBTLE RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD WHENEVER I WOULD TRY TO ACCELERATE. I HAD A MECHANIC CHECK MY CAR IN JANUARY 2021 WHEN HE CHECKED THE OIL LEVELS AND POINTED OUT THAT THERE WAS NOTHING ON THE DIPSTICK. WHAT IS EVEN STRANGER IS THAT NO DASHBOARD LIGHT HAD COME ON. I HAD DRIVEN THE CAR APPROXIMATELY 2,500 SINCE THE THE OIL CHANGE IN DECEMBER AND IT WAS ALREADY EMPTY. I CHECKED UNDER THE CAR WHERE I PARK BOTH AT HOME AND AT WORK AND THERE ARE NO OIL SPILLS ON THE GROUND. I'VE READ SEVERAL FORUMS WHERE PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME ISSUE WITH OLDER MODELS OF THIS CAR AND THERE ARE RECALLS FOR THOSE MODELS. HOWEVER, I'VE ALSO COME ACROSS FORUMS WHERE PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE WITH NEWER MODELS SUCH AS MINE. I WILL BE TAKING THIS CAR TO A HYUNDAI DEALER TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE. BUT AT THIS POINT, I HAVE TO ADD ABOUT QUART OF OIL EVERY JUST TO KEEP IT FULL AND TO PREVENT THE ENGINE FROM SEIZING WHILE I AM DRIVING. THIS IS A HUGE CONCERN.

THE CHECK HYBRID SYSTEMS LIGHT CAME ON, FOLLOWED BY THE OIL LIGHT, THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT (WITHIN THE SPAN OF AROUND 45 SECONDS). AFTER THE LIGHTS THE CAR BECAME UNRESPONSIVE TO THE GAS PEDAL AND SLOWED TO A HALT. AFTER GETTING IT TOWED TO A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY, THEY CALLED AND SAID THAT TE OIL PLUG IS MISSING AND IT CAUSED THE WHOLE ENGINE TO SEIZE AND NEED A COMPLETE REPLACEMENT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE SAFETY MODE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. ALSO, WHILE DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO EXCEED 60 MPH AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TEAM HYUNDAI (LOCATED AT 22514 THREE NOTCH RD, LEXINGTON PARK, MD 20653, (301) 880-4120) WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT METAL SHAVINGS WERE FOUND AND THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AFTER FOUR MONTHS OF THE VEHICLE BEING SERVICED AT THE DEALER, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE WIRING WAS CHANGED; HOWEVER, THE ENGINE WAS NOT REPLACED. ON NOVEMBER 8, 2019, WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE CONTACT HEARD AN ABNORMAL NOISE AND THE SAFETY MODE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT DUE TO THE OIL CONSUMPTION, THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE CONTACT NEEDED TO DRIVE 1,000 MILES AND THEN CHECK THE OIL CONSUMPTION. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON NOVEMBER 23, 2019. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER, BUT WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000.

I BOUGHT THE CAR USED FROM A SCAM DEALERSHIP. I HAD NO IDEA THAT THERE WAS AN ENGINE RECALL IN JANUARY UNTIL IT TURNED OFF AND ON JUST ONE WEEK AFTER LEAVING THE LOT. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THEM, OBVIOUSLY, THEY SAID IT WASN'T THEIR PROBLEM. I THEN TOOK IT TO COLLEGE PARK HYUNDAI TO HAVE THEM UPDATE THE KNOCK SENSOR AND DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE. AFTER AN EXTENDED ROAD TEST, IT WAS DECIDED THAT MY PROBLEM WAS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. YET I TOOK IT TO OTHER DEALERSHIPS, AND PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE SAYS THE SAME. MY DASH CAM HAS RECORDED THE MOMENTS WHEN THE CAR STUTTERS AND FAILS TO ACCELERATE BEFORE TURNING BACK ON A COUPLE SECONDS LATER. IT HAS HAPPENED ON CURVES AND I HAVE NEARLY DROVE OFF THE HIGHWAY DUE TO THIS. IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS REACHING ABOUT 60MPH. I LIVE IN MD BUT WORK IN VA. I'M PAYING HIGH INTEREST FOR A CRAPPY LEMON CAR. I EVEN CONTACTED CORPORATE HYUNDAI, AND THEY JUST LAUGHED AND CALLED ME STUPID FOR BUYING A USED CAR...

OVER THE PAST MONTH MY CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOUR TIMES DUE TO IT MALFUNCTIONING WHILE I AM DRIVING IT - AND THAT IS NOT INCLUDING WHEN I TOOK IT IN AT THE END OF AUGUST BECAUSE THE TRUNK MERCHANISM BROKE AND IT WOULDN'T CLOSE. THE FIRST TIME HAPPENED OVER LABOR DAY WEEKEND WHEN I WAS ON A ROADTRIP, OUT OF NOWHERE THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND, LIKE OTHERS ON THE NHSA WEBSITE HAVE STATED, IT WAS VERY JUMPY AND WOULDN'T GO PAST 45 MPH. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY REPLACED A SAFETY RECALL IN THE WIRING SYSTEM AND IT WORKED FINE FOR A FEW DAYS BEFORE IT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE SECOND TIME THEY TOLD ME THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE ENGINE WAS ESSENTIALLY BROKEN AND THERE WERE LITTLE METAL PIECES INSIDE. IT TOOK A WEEK TO REPLACE AND THEN EVERYTHING WAS FINE FOR A FEW DAYS UNTIL YESTERDAY. YESTERDAY THE BATTERY LIGHT TURNED ON AND THE REPAIR SHOP LET ME KNOW THE BATTERY WAS IN GOOD HEALTH BUT LOW ON CHARGE SO THEY CHARGED IT AND IT SEEMED TO BE WORKING FINE. THEN THIS MORNING WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY ALL OF THE EMERGENCY SERVICE LIGHTS (CHECK ENGINE, CHECK BRAKES, ETC.) CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AND IT WAS UNDRIVABLE. I BY SOME MIRACLE MANAGED TO PULL THE CAR OVER WHERE I HAD TO GET THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE I AM AWAITING TO HEAR WHAT IS WRONG. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS CAR. AFTER READING UP ON IT APPARENTLY THERE SEEMS TO BE ISSUES WITH THE ENGINE AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, THAT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO NOT HIT ANYONE BUT I COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED ALL FOUR TIMES THE CAR MALFUNCTIONED. ALL OF THESE ISSUES HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED BY THE DEALER TO HAVE BEEN DUE TO MANUFACTURAL DEFECTS - SOMETHING THAT IS OUT OF MY CONTROL AND SHOULDN'T HAPPEN FOR A CAR THAT IS UNDER 26K MILES.

CAR LOSES POWER IN SITUATIONS WHERE YOU NEED TO ACCELERATE LIKE PASSING AND MERGING. WE JUST BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE 8/3/2019. THIS IS BERY DANGEROUS. AFTER THE CAR JERKS AND LOSES POWER, THEN IT SUDDENLY COMES BACK FULL THROTTLE. I WAS ALMOST HIT BY ANOTHER CAR AS IOST POWER WHILE MERGING INTO 55MPH TRAFFIC. THE CAR IS NOW IN THE SHOP AND WE ARE AWAITING A DIAGNOSTIC. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND IF NOT CORRECTED SHOULD CAUSE THESE CARS TO BE TAKEN OUT OFF THE ROAD.

I PURCHASED MY 2017 HYUNDAI SONATA ON JULY 21, 2017 IN HOUSTON, TX. EARLY JUNE 2019 I RECEIVED A LETTER REGARDING A RECALL ON THE ENGINE, I TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND GOT THE REQUIRED UPDATE. ON JUNE 17, 2019 MY VEHICLE BECAME INOPERABLE ON THE HIGHWAY DUE TO THE RECALL, WHICH PLACED IT IN A SAFETY MODE AND CAUSED THE ENGINE LIGHT TO BLINK CONTINUOUSLY. I PARKED MY VEHICLE, CONTACTED HYUNDAI TOWING AND HAD IT DELIVERED TO A DEALERSHIP. AFTER FOUR DAYS WITH NO CALL TO UPDATE ME ON MY VEHICLE, OFFER A LOANER CAR OR RENTAL, I CONTACTED THE 800 NUMBER AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING HYUNDAI COULD DO TO ASSIST WITH THE INCONVENIENCE THEY HAVE CAUSED. MY COMPLAINT WAS SENT TO CASE MANAGER, DIANE C. (714-965-3595). I NEVER RECEIVED A RESPONSE FROM DIANE. ON JULY 13, 2019, I TRAVELED TO CHICAGO, IL, WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY GOING AROUND 70 MPH, THE CAR AGAIN PLACED ITSELF IN SAFETY MODE, PULLING IT BACK DOWN TO 45 MPH AND CAUSING THE VEHICLES BEHIND ME TO BRAKE AND SWERVE IN THE ATTEMPT TO NOT REAR END ME. I IMMEDIATELY WENT TO THE CLOSEST HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP, ROGERS HYUNDAI, 2700 S MICHIGAN AVE, CHICAGO IL, 60616. THE SERVICE MANAGER, TONY SERPICO, WAS NO HELP TO ME WHATSOEVER. HE WAS VERY RUDE AND INSINCERE TO MY PROBLEM. I CONTACTED THE TOWING COMPANY AGAIN AND HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP. I NEEDED TO RETURN HOME FOR WORK SO I RENTED A VEHICLE AT MY OWN EXPENSE. DIANE FINALLY CONTACTED ME AFTER I CALLED AND SENT 'ALERTS' TO HER SEVERAL TIMES. I EXPLAINED THE WHOLE SITUATION TO HER AND HAVE YET TO GET A RESPONSE REGARDING MY VEHICLE, A RENTAL OR MY REIMBURSEMENT. I AM VERY UPSET AT THE WAY HYUNDAI HAS TREATED ME THROUGHOUT THIS WHOLE ORDEAL, WHICH IS AT NO FAULT OF MY OWN. INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE ENGINE OR BUYING BACK THE VEHICLE HYUNDAI CONTINUES TO PUT ME AND MY FAMILY IN DANGER.

CAR RECENTLY HAD 3 RECALLS THAT WERE REPAIRED HOWEVER ENGINE IS STILL SHUTTING OFF AND GEAR SHIFT WON'T MOVE AND ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AND OFF. I GOT A DIAGNOSTIC AND IT HAD 3 CODES OF INTAKE MANIFOLD AND VALVE. I BOUGHT THE CAR LIKE THIS.

AFTER DRIVING LESS THAN A MILE THE ENGINE STOPED AND A YELLOW LIGHT TURNED ON. AGAIN LEFT MY VEHICLE AT THE SAME SERVICE, TODAY I CALLED THEM AND TOLD ME THAT THEY WILL PROBABLY FIXING IT AFTER RECEIVING THE PART NEXT WEEK. IF IT WON'T GET FIXED THEY ARE PLANNING TO CHANGE THE ENGINE. IS THIS A NORMAL PROCESS! AND WHAT HAPPENS TO THE VALUE OF THE CAR IF THE ENGINE CHANGES?

CAMPAIGN 953 I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE BY MAIL FOR THE KNOCK SENSOR DETECTION SYSTEM SOFTWARE UPDATE AND IT WAS COMPLETED ON 03/19/2019. THE VEHICLE DOESN'T ACCELERATE PAST 20 MPH, JERKS AND HESITATE. I CONTACT THE HYUNDAI DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND TOLD THEM ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND GAVE ME AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE NEXT DAY. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED AND I WAS ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE, WILL NOT PROVIDE ME A LOANED VEHICLE AND WILL NOT COVER A RENTAL. MY WIFE JUST GAVE BIRTH TO OUR SON ON 03/21/2019 AND WE WERE DEPENDING ON THIS VEHICLE TO TRANSPORT THE BABY FROM THE HOSPITAL TO OUR HOME. I WAS BASICALLY FORCED TO PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHICLE WITH ANOTHER COMPANY, BECAUSE THE HYUNDAI REPRESENTATIVE COULD NOT GIVE ME A DATE OR AN APPROXIMATION OF WHEN THE VEHICLE WILL BE FIXED. I STILL OWED $3500 AND STILL PAYING INSURANCE FOR IT. I NEED HELP.

I WAS DRIVING VERY SLOWLY TO MAKE A TURN INTO MY GARAGE WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN AND HIT THE SIDE OF MY HOUSE BREAKING THROUGH A PATIO GUARD RAIL. THE FRONT WHEELS OF THE CAR WENT OVER THE BULKHEAD. INSURANCE COMPANY SENT A WRECKER TO RETRIEVE THE VEHICLE. THE INSURANCE COMPANY TOTALED THE CAR. THIS UNINTENDED ACCELERATION HAD OCCURRED ONCE WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON A STATE ROAD IN CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED BEYOND THE SET CRUISE CONTROL SPEED. JOHN MC MY SERVICE ADVISOR DROVE MY CAR WITH ME IN IT HE SAYS HE KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM AND IT HESITATED ON HIM AND SAY BUT WE DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT. HE SAID TODAY WE DIDN'T RECREATE THE ISSUE SO WE BELIEVE YOUR CAR IS FIXED. THIS CAR IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD WITH A 2015 SONATA. I TRADED THAT IN FOR A ELANTRA THAT WAS WAY TO SMALL FOR ME AND I TRADED FOR THIS 2017 SONATA. THIS CAR IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. NOT SURE WHAT TO DO. HYUNDAI NEEDS TO FIND OUT WHAT WRONG WITH THIS CAR SO WHEN THIS PROBLEM ARISES TO ANOTHER HYUNDAI A SOLUTION CAN BE FOUND. JUST GIVE ME A NEW SONATA AND I WOULD BE HAPPY, I BOUGHT MY CAR WITH 6 MILES ON IT DO THE RIGHT THING HYUNDAI. IT'S AWFUL SCARY AT 70 MPH TO HAVE THIS HESITATION BEGIN. ON SATURDAY 9/16/17 I WAS AT A STOP LIGHT SITTING STILL WHEN MY CAR STALLED AND WENT DEAD. I LOOKED AT THE DASHBOARD AND SAW THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. THE BRAKE WAS FROZEN AND BEFORE I COULD RESTART THE CAR IT ROLLED INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. THERE NO DAMAGE TO HER JEEP. HOWEVER MY CAR HIT THE SPARE TIRE AND RACK ON THE BACK OF HER TRUNK, CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE HOOD OF MY CAR, THE GRILL AND LOWER BUMPER. WE DID NOT EXCHANGE INFORMATION, AS SHE DID NOT HAVE DAMAGE TO HER CAR, SO SHE LEFT THE SCENE. I DROVE THE CAR HOME (2 MILES FROM MY HOUSE) AND CALLED THE DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD ME TO BRING THE CAR IN. I BROUGHT IT IN THE SAME DAY. RAYMOND, THE SERVICE AGENT CAME OUTSIDE TO SURVEY THE DAMAGE AND I TOLD HIM WHAT HAPPENED. HE WENT TO TALK TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AND LATER CAME OUT AND SAID THEY WILL TAKE THE CAR AND PUT IT ON THE MACHINE TO GET A DIAGNOSTIC READING TO SEE WHY THE CAR STALLED. THEY GAVE ME A LOANER CAR AND I LEFT. ON MONDAY, 9/19/17, I RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP AFTER I GOT OFF WORK AND WAS TOLD BY RAYMOND THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG THUS FAR. HE SAID HE WANTED TO KEEP THE CAR ANOTHER DAY OR TWO TO TAKE IT FOR A DRIVE AND TRY TO SEE IF IT WOULD STALL AGAIN. I AGREED AND ASKED RAYMOND TO ALSO CHECK THE FUEL INJECTORS, FUEL PUMP, FUEL REGULATOR, AS MY FRIEND WHO IS A CAR MECHANIC SUGGESTED TO ME THAT THIS CAN CAUSE A CAR TO STALL ALSO. HE SAID OKAY. ON TODAY, WEDNESDAY 9/21/17, RAYMOND CALLED ME AND SAID THEY TOOK THE CAR OUT FOR A DRIVE AND IT DID NOT STALL, NOR COULD THEY GET A READING THAT ANYTHING WAS WRONG WHEN THEY PUT IT ON THE MACHINE. HE SAID HE COULD NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE CAR WOULD STALL. I ASKED FOR A DIAGNOSTIC REPORT AND HE SAID HE COULD ONLY GIVE ME A COPY OF THE SERVICE TICKET. I AM AFRAID THAT THIS CAR COULD STALL AGAIN AND WHAT IF IT HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING -- IT COULD BE MUCH WORST DAMAGE AND BODILY HARM. PLEASE HELP!
