My car steering is locking up while driving on highway and regular roads. Resulting almost in not being able to control and crash. I also had a recall for my engine which was already replaced and now having same issue with oil burning and not leaking.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving 10 MPH in a parking lot, the steering wheel seized. The contact was unable to turn the steering wheel. The vehicle was restarted. The vehicle became sluggish and snagged while driving to the residence. The steering wheel symbol in red was displayed on the instrument panel. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 59,011.

While driving my vehicle I have lost power steering twice completely. The first time I was in a five-story parking garage turning into a parking space, when power steering went out. The second time I was pulling into my driveway and the power steering went completely out. At other times my car would pull to the right just a little at one point or maybe even harder at other points. I never know when I'm going to have a problem sometimes I don't have a problem, car drives normal this problem has existed for the last 3 weeks. Like power steering sometimes is harder to turn to the left around a curve are a corner. When the steering goes out warning lights do come on one like a hazard sign one like engine light and others. I take really good care of my car my personal mechanic has called Hyundai so he could get information on how to fix my vehicle they have informed him that I have to bring it into them and would not tell my mechanic what the problem was. I would say the problem exists 20% of the time 80% of the time the card drives great no problems but while driving these things change.
- I was reversing from a car space, and do a K-turn, the steering wheel locked when moving forward. When the steering wheel locked, the red steering wheel light on the dashboard is on. I have to turn off the engine to reset the power steering. It's available for inspection upon request. - I cannot move the car in the parking lot. The other drivers in the lot do not know what happened. - I don't know exact step to reproduce the problem. - The 2015 Sonata may have a faulty EPS (Electronic Power Steering) motor, or a failed torque sensor. It would be helpful for Hyundai to confirm the 2017 Sonata model does not have these issues/recalls.
Power relay has been replaced several times, air bags did not deploy with either wreck and loss control of steering causing a crash which bent the frame. Hyundai never once contacted me regarding this defective car they replaced motor in because of knock sensor and im lucky to be alive. On one of the accidents in February there was an error message that popped up right before I had the wreck and it was an error message wrong with the cars transmission system or something like that I had the dealership who said there was no codes on that car and I had my own personal mechanic who had codes pop up on that car that the dealership hid
Steering wheel warning light comes on traction control light comes on. Steering becomes difficult
When turning the steering wheel to the left, the steering wheel jerks and pulls to the left, gets stuck some and the jerk back into place when coming out a left turn or curve to balance steering wheel position. Searched for recall and took to Hyundai but they could not find anything. They say maybe purchase tires, rotate your tires and/or wheel alignment. I have done it all. They said they heard others say that but don't see a recall or know what would cause it. Went on Reddit, and others are having the same problem. Therefore, there is a problem this jerking issue. Experienced total loss of power steering when entering a parking lot. Was extremely hard to turn wheel to get into a parking spot. Red steering wheel icon with exclamation point was flashing on the dash. Shut off car, turned back on, and the light went off. Still had car towed, owner’s manual states to have it inspected by the manufacturer, don’t drive. Of course, Walser Hyundai Service Center in Coon Rapids could not duplicate the issue - so nothing was done. A C1102 code was detected meaning low voltage, however, when checking the battery and alternator, both tested good. Was told that there are 4 different parts to the steering, each one being very expensive to repair. Also, my display has been going out intermittently for the last year. Possible voltage too? My display did NOT go out when the power steering went out. ??? Computer Issue Maybe ??? Car already has 3 Extended Coverage issues - Power Steering, Fuel Filter Assembly, and Engine Failure, not to forget the excessive oil consumption problem (1-2 quarts per week). No recalls, just wait to see if it happens to you. Some of these issue are extremely dangerous, there should be recalls!!! They need to be fixed. I am now fearful to drive this car, it’s either going to kill me or someone else, especially if I lose the power steering at high speeds. Lost complete faith in Hyundai as a vehicle manufacturer, they do not stand behind their product.
Lost power steering in heavy traffic. Was able to move safely to a parking lot and stopped. A light came on with a steering wheel at the same time the power steering went out. Turned off vehicle and when started again no light on the dash and power steering was ok. After 2-3 more miles of driving lost power again with the light came back on. Was able to park safely. Started it the next day and all seemed ok but did not drive. 2 days later started ok and no light on dash, within 1 mile light came on then 10 seconds later the power steering stopped working. Was able to drive slowly to the mechanics and he confirmed that it needs a new module inside the steering wheel.
Steering makes nocking noise when turning the wheel. Steering has locked up while driving losing all control of steering the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, she became aware that the electronic power steering was not functioning properly, requiring increased effort to maneuver the vehicle. The EPS and ESC warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who observed a failure code on the OBD scanner but was unable to duplicate the failure during a test drive. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V190000 (Steering), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 55,000.

My engine burns oil like crazy. At least 1 qt every 1,000 miles or less. Took to dealership and was given a hard time about it having an issue. Now my power steering light keeps randomly coming on. I'll feel the steering start to get hard to steer. Thought I needed belts so I replaced both serpentine & water pump belt but it still happens. When my power steering light comes on and steering wheel locks up, I have to put the car in park & rev the engine to get the light to turn off. Mechanics said all pulleys are in good shape so not sure what's doing it. My lights also start to flicker when power steering light comes on. I have a new altenator and battery so it's not caused from that. I have no idea what's causing it but it's extremely dangerous!!
The power steering on the vehicle keeps locking on its own! The dealership say they can’t do anything because once you turn the car off for a certain amount of time it stops and goes back normal. Not safe for driving happens on highway can cause deadly accidents
When you start the car and take off.... the power steering goes away. Very difficult to steer car. Its happened a few times now in a short period of time. When you turn off the engine...and restart, The steering comes back. I see there are many people on the internet that have the same problem. Someone is going to get in an accident and get killed if this is not address immediately. I see down below in the form to fill out it has a date. The last one was on
Complete steering column replacement is required (COLUMN & SHAFT ASSY-STEERING 56310-C2700). When turning all the way, like to turn 90 degrees or enter a parking space, the steering wheel locks. Car must be turned off and restarted. Sometimes you have to do this a couple of times for the steering wheel to unlock. Hyundai dealer agrees that the steering column has to be replace, unsafe to drive vehicle. It is June and have been waiting six months for Hyundai to provide the part. Hyundai USA corporate says they don't know when the part will be available, they will not provide a date, could be next year according to some employees at the Hyundai dealer. Hyundai says it is not a manufacturing defect, even though there are many comments on line, and previous models have issued recalls for this same defect.
On [XXX] at [XXX], my 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport lost power steering while I was driving 60 mph on [XXX] in San Leandro, CA. The MDPS warning light came on and my steering wheel became very tight and difficult to control. I remained calm and maintain control of the steering with both of my hands and got off the freeway safely. I parked at the nearest exit and turned off the engine. I waited a few seconds, then restarted the engine and the MDPS warning light disappeared and the power steering came back. The MDPS malfunction happened on local street before, but that was my 1st MDPS malfunction experience while I was on freeway and it was very scary and dangerous. I reported the incident to San Leandro Hyundai dealership on 5/31/2024 because Hyundai is aware of this malfunction and extended the MDPS warranty to 15 years. The mechanic from San Leandro Hyundai acknowledged the issue and found a fault in the MDPS. However, the dealership refused to repair or replace the MDPS because the dealership claimed the part (56310-C2700), steering column & shaft assembly, is not covered by the extended warranty. San Leandro Hyundai dealership knew there was a problem, but disregarded driver safety on highway. Please see MDPS warning light from my pictures and I have video recording of the incident if needed. While driving the power steering stopped working and it was difficult to safely navigate the vehicle to a safe location. It was determined that the power steering module (PSM) stopped working and needs to be replaced. This will cost approximately $850 because the PSM is located in/under the dashboard and a lot of the steering column has to be removed as well as the driver’s side airbag. The cost will be upwards from $850 depending on how many hours it takes to disassemble and reassemble the car to fix the PSM. There are many complaints on Hyundai’s PSM, so why hasn’t a recall been issued?

tHE POWER STEERING (WHICH IS ELECTRIC) JUST STOPPED WORKING. THIS IS VERY HAZARDOUS SINCE STEERING IS VERY DIFFICULT. COULD CAUSE ACCIDENT WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE, CAUSING INJURY OR DEATH. HAPPENS SUDDENLY WITHOUT WARNING.
Power steering stops working while driving. Feels like steering wheel locks up while driving, extremely dangerous and frightening. It's a intermittent issue and hard to duplicate at the Hyundai dealership. This is a known issue and Hyundai is making it difficult to people to get their cars fixed and safe again because their mechanics cannot duplicate the issue at will at the shop. This excuse is not acceptable. This serious issue is legitimate and will cost someone their life.
I was pulling into a street parallel parking space and the wheel suddenly locked and became hard to turn- causing my to side swipe another vehicle. Almost a week later my daughter was driving onto a highway on ramp and the wheel wouldn’t turn. She took her foot off the gas and drifted into the shoulder brakes.
My son was driving the car, and completely out of nowhere it seized to have any compression and steering/accelerating became disabled. I have been given an estimate up to $7,000 for an engine rebuild due to this happening. I have reached out to Hyundai and they denied my claim due to car being out of warranty. This should have never happened when the car has been well maintained, even with the motor burning through oil faster than it should be, which I have always kept a close eye on. This car is defective and unsafe.
When making minor steering corrections, driver inputs require more than normal force, until the resistance suddenly gives way. The car then responds to drivers input, causing a need for the driver to correct in the opposite direction. The result is a car which seens to weave from side to side as the driver attempts to stay within lane. The side to side movements become particularly dangerous when traveling aside large vehicles. Multiple internet conversations concerning this steering problem can be found. The service manager at the local dealer states he is aware of the problem but will do nothing about it as no recall has been issued.
Power steering failed as I was pulling in parking lot, with my son , have not brought to dealer yet costly to fix been told by mechainic,no warning whatsoever ever on gauges, luckily it didn’t happen on highway that I had just gotten off of 65mph could have been worse
I was stopped at a red light. Once light turned green I went to make a left-hand turn. My vehicles power steering shorted out, almost causing me to hit a pedestrian and child.
Power steering failure almost resulted in a fatality. Could not steer away from a pedistrian
Problem 1: I made a right turn at a red light. As I turned my power steering light turned on and my steering wheel locked up and I lost control of the vehicle. After stopping and turning off the vehicle, I restarted it. At this point I was able to regain control of the car. A few days later the same thing happened again as I made a right turn from a parking lot into the flow of traffic. One again I stopped the engine and restarted the car, then I regained control of the car. Problem 2 (May be related): My passenger side headlight was replaced a year ago. Recently the light went out again. I took the car in to a mechanic to repair it. It was repaired so I thought. Two days later the light went out again. The mechanic believes their may be an electrical issue. Problem 3 (May be related): My driver side brake light was replaced about a year ago as well. It has now gone out again. I have had my vehicle serviced twice by a Hyundai dealership at least twice since the first incident.
I have been having issues with the Power Steering, I often get the wheel sensor and stability sensors activate making it very hard to steer my vehicle, I have taken to the repair shop to unlock, but comes back after a week. this is a problem and feel very unsafe driving as it has locked while I am driving, having me to pull over to turn off my car to clear the sensors. this issue has been happening more often, and has become a financial burden as the dealer charges a fee for running analysis on the vehicle.
Steering wheel froze/would not turn, and Shift selector and Ignition key were also frozen on Three occasions. Once while backing out of parking space, and Twice after being parked. Vehicle is available for inspection. Frozen steering wheel while in motion could have caused accident. Car was inspected by Dealership, but Service Representative stated " could Not determine problem unless it was happening at time of their inspection" and " they are having this problem on other Hyundai models." Only inspected by original Dealership. No prior warning to any of the three incidents.
Steering has locked up on me, usually when coming out of a parking space. Makes a clunking noise at times when turning. Only way to reset is to turn engine off and on again. Has been giving me trouble for a number of months now. Had 2 different Auto Repair services look at it, and they say it may be electrical or something more serious. Both recommend to take it to Hyundai dealership where I got it. I am awaiting a service call from the Hyundai dealership, and from all these other reports, I think the cost of the repair should be covered under a recall. Very unsettling to drive when the steering does not work properly.
Steering wheel has electrical issue and only works if you turn it to the left. Also check engine light comes on for emissions problem and oil burning faster than usual as well as the fuel.
On July 13, 3023, I was driving the vehicle and the pwwer steering light illuminated, but the light did go out. I took the vehicle to Stew Hansen Hyundai in Urbandale, Iowa, indicated the entire power steering column has got to be replaced. The parts hace been on back order, and as of today, August 16, the service center is still waiting for the parts to be delivered. The vehicle has slightly over 69,000 miles and 6 years. It's not covered under the warranty, Because that part is covered by the 5 year 50,000 warranty, so I have to pay an estimated $3,400. hundred dollars. I did share with the service agent that I received a power steering 15 years, 150,000 warranty extension notification, and provided him a copy, but waa told that was only for a specific part, and it did not apply to my repair, because my repair is for the entire power steering column. The reason why I'm paying this is because in June 2022, at 60,000 miles the vehicle's engine had to be replaced. That too took over two months to be fixed and returned to me, but repair as covered under warranty. Also, I'd be happy to share the information, but my vehicle is still in the shop for repair, depending on when the parts are received.
As reported by many others, electric power steering column locks up. Happens at least once a week. Turn car off and then start again issue cleared.
I have been having issues with my electric power steering rack and pinion when turning left it binds occasionally. I was backing into my driveway 7/10/2023 and my steering rack bound up and locked, triggering steering control warning light, and abs light. Other models of Sonata and previous years have recalls on this problem and I this should be included with those active recalls.
I noticed that the steering column was making a noise right after Hyunda replaced the defective motor. Car was leaking fluids and engine light came on. Benson Hyundai had the car towed. I mentioned that the steering did not feel right and I was concerned. They evaluated and said the mid steering shaft needed to be replaced. I noticed this was an issue with earlier models but did not see anything with the 2017 model. Thought it would be worth inquiring as the dealership is so nasty to deal with and don’t seem to have answers when I go to them.
While turning right my steering wheel locked up. I was able to turn it enough to get on the side of the road, I turned it off and turned it back on and it was fine for about a week and then it started to lock up again. I tried turning it off and turning it back on but it has continued to lock up every time and I am unable to drive it without it being a danger.
I’ve had my 2017 Hyundai Sonata for approximately 1 year, purchased through a Carmax dealership. With no explanation, while making a left hand turn the steering wheel locked for about 1-2 seconds and all lights related to the steering and braking system appeared on the dashboard, they instantly disappeared and my steering wheel was usable again. This same incident happened an hour later making a right hand turn, as well as a third time going straight over a speed bump: This issue is intermittent, occurring fairly rarely, however it’s terrifying and extremely dangerous to drive the car now. The vehicle is full on power steering fluid and hasn’t been in any accidents. I’ve talked to numerous people with this same issue. This will kill somebody if it isn’t addressed as a recall. Most people can’t afford to have intermittent problems diagnosed, due to most auto shops / dealerships not being able to help unless there are warning lights on the dashboard. Please help
The power steering fails. It has happened several times while backing up and while slowly moving forward. The car loses all power steering and the steering wheel catches.
The steering wheel completely locks up while driving/turning. It almost as if the power steering has gone out and it's near impossible to turn the steering wheel. On several occasions while backing out of our driveway, the steering COMPLETELY locked up. On few other occasions, it locked up while driving and making a turn. 2 times it locked up randomly while just driving switching lanes at 25Mph. Resolution is to stop the vehicle, turn it off, wait a minute or two and turn it back on to reset the power steering and then it works until it happens again. There are hundreds of reports that can found online for this issue happening to this year and model car (2017 Hyundai Sonata). This is clearly an issue. This is EXTREMELY dangerous as I don't have to explain what happens when steering wheel gets locked up while driving. This has happened SEVERAL times now and dealer was no help when we initially took it in as they could not "replicate" the issue as it is intermittent. Please look into this issue with Hyundai. This is unacceptable. Will action only be taken when lives are lost because of it? Is that the cost to have this issue looked in to? Thank you
Steering column randomly locks up and the car can’t be driven.
Since Aug 2021 I started to feel the steering is very tight. Even with a small move car steers very quickly. I have to hold the steering with both hands. Before that it was very easy to drive, even with one hand. Since then, every time when I went to Hyundai dealerships for regular maintenance I brought up about this. I was taking to Hyundai dealership in Kirkland, WA and Renton, WA. They checked and said that they don't feel it. I called Hyundai US and they assigned a case number and assigned a person to work with me. She suggested that I go back to the dearlership to ask them to inspect once again. When I went to the dearlership on March 27th, 2023, they said that the warranty has expired. When I called Hyundai US, she talked to the dearlership and now they are asking me to complete the 60K service mileage, including brake change before they can look at this issue. I am concerned about the safety. In many forums on the internet, I read that car steering jams right in the middle of the highways, leading to accidents.
Hello, I would like to file a complaint my name is [XXX] I am having a translator help me to write this. I was taken advantage of by a bad car dealership who sold me a dangerous car that smokes leaked oil does not stop and locks up they said the car was safe they also did not explain the contract to me. They want me to drive unsafe vehicle 1000 miles. They won’t give me a loaner car. They won’t give me my money back or a replace my car I feel unsafe and I don’t want to do business with them ever again. I want my money back. They took advantage of me because I didn’t know any better. Translators notes : regarding purchase of vehicle: He purchased a used car, 2017 Hyundai Sonata/ at McGrath City Hyunda. He does not know English The dealership took advantage of him he doesn’t speak English and is a first time car buyer, they made him sign a contract selling him an unsafe vehicle, without explaining what arbitration is the car is unsafe. . He had immediate problems with the oil and smoke coming out of the car within the first week and went back to have an oil change they charged him money. The following week the same issue occurred with smoking and stalling of the car. He brought the car in for service and they tried to charge him almost $500 for a new gasket. I told them this is not right and I would report them to consumer affairs they said they would repair it 10 days later the same issue occurred and he brought it in again they put oil in the car and he had problems again. When he brought it back they said they need to keep the car to have it serviced and they would not provide him a loaner car. He is renting a car and spending a lot of money and he is making payment on the loan for the car. The dealership is forcing him to drive an unsafe car 1000 miles in order to have an engine replaced not care about his safety. They told him he has to drive the car for 1000 miles in order to have a warranty take effect he is scared to drive it. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (
In October 2022 my power steering failed as I turned into the drop off circle at my child's school. The traction light and another hazard light came on and function did not return until vehicle was restarted. I know experience clicking sounds coming from steering system when ever I turn 90 degrees or more. My vehicle barely has 44000 miles and clearly is experiencing the same manufacturing defect that hundreds of owners have reported here. There need to be an emergency recall to prevent anyone from getting hurt or even worse. Steering is a necessary function when you have such a massive piece of machinery to control. If Hyundai ignores this issue it is clear they are ok with having weapons out on the road that were supposed to be quality vehicles. Once you can't control a vehicle it becomes a weapon and since this issue seems to correct itself although it leaves defects afterwards people can't determine when it will happen again. I need my car and have children. Hyundai be the company you advertise as, this is showing you have no concern for your customers safety.
Power Steering failed on 4-lane highway. Is available for inspection. I was able to slow down and hard-steer to shoulder of road with cars whizzing by. Problem has not been confirmed by dealer or service center because it just happened a few hours ago. All shops are closed. No, the problem has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or any others. Warning light came on with steering wheel icon before it failed. I had no idea what icon meant until I came home and googled it to learn it is "Electric Power Steering (EPS) Warning Light". Also the warning light icon of car on wavy lines came on (Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Indicator".) Meanwhile I'm terrified, this has never happened before. After a few minutes I cranked the car, turned steering wheel back and forth. Warning lights turned off. I slowly drove it on home, keeping to far right in case I had to leave road again. After I got home, I did thorough research to find out what had happened and I see there have been numerous reports of 2017 Hyundai Sonata EPS cases reported. Why hasn't Hyundai issued Recalls on the 2017 EPS problems? This is a serious safety issue. People could die. There needs to be a Recall on this car and Manufacturer should pay to have this issue remedied as soon as possible in order to prevent death or serious injury in these cars.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. The traction control and an unknown warning light was illuminated. The dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided a number to another dealer. The contact was informed to have the vehicle towed to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 71,000.

Electric power steering failure, have taken to the dealer and they told me I need a new battery. I bought one and the problem is still happening. Used to reset after I restart the car but now it won’t.
Power Steering, on two occasions the power steering malfunctioned. One while starting to leave a parking lot, the other happened while driving. This can cause an extremely safety hazard driving in traffic. As far as know there has been no recalls addressing this problem. I did some research and found this same incident has happened with others with this vehicle. It seems that a safety recall should be initiated to correct this malfunction.
The steering wheel became stiff and I had to jerk it a little just to coast with the curves in the road. Took it to Hyundai and they said nothing was wrong and recalibrated the steering. The problem remained. A few months later there was a mechanical griding sound coming from the steering column while car was idle on several occasions. It eventually stopped and then the steering wheel was not in sync with turning the wheels causing a knocking sound. The plastic gear in the motor was bad and replaced by a mechanic. Vehicle now has additional sounds coming from the steering column and they suspect the power steering motor itself is bad. Sound/problem more noticeable when driving on a bumpy road.
Electric power steering light has come on… when this happens the stirring wheel almost feels locked and when merging off the freeway this was a scary thing. Not sure how something like this can go out already and the car is only a little over 5 years old.
When driving the vehicle, the power steering stops working causing the steering to become very difficult to operate. It has created very hazardous situations. I’m very nervous when driving the vehicle due to the seriousness of the situation.
I had just come off the interstate and was driving down a side road when my steering wheel became locked ( very hard to steer) and warning lights on the dashboard came on. It has happened two separate times.
I took my car to a shop due to my car having a loud knocking noise coming from the engine bay and lack of acceleration as well as the oil light flickering on and off and once the mechanic inspected my vehicle he said metal particles were being deposited into my oil due to internal engine parts. After picking my car up all the lights on the dash cut on and the car completely had no steering, no brakes, no power but the radio still worked. I barely could turn the steering wheel nor could stop the vehicle due to this and thankfully could coast into an upgrade leveled hill and stop the car. Car would barely recrank or hold power nor would go above 40 mph. Only drove 5 miles to get the car back home safely. Drove back around 3:00 a.m. so there wouldn't be much traffic out in case of something like this happening. Could've been catastrophic!
Was pulling out of a parking space started driving and power steering completely failed second time this has happened in 2 months
Yesterday when turning right on to my street making right turn very slow as children going home from school my steer ing lock no control. Car stopped within a few feet but unable to restart or take it out of drive. I tried several times turning the key nothing happened. But finally able to get it out of drive and start the car. With that the power steering worked I slowly drove it home about ten houses from intersections. Lucky no one hurt when I turned on to my street. Looked up problem with the electric steering for this cat and reports from your agency referenced similar problems but for some reason no recall issued by manufacturer. Call dealer can do nothing without mfg doing recall. How possible.? Your agency is to protect. What's more dangerous then having your steering going completely out while driving.
2017 Hyundai Sonata. 53k miles. Steering becomes sticky and hard to turn. It is most concerning on the highway when at speed it is difficult to keep the car going in a straight line. It takes extra force to turn the wheel just a little. Once its forced, it can turn too much if not careful and will swerve into the next lane. It then does not freely return to center without manually doing so. I will not let my wife drive the car. I have read other reports of this problem and it is a serious issue. I have not brought the car to any dealer or repair shop. This is clearly a safety recall issue and must be dealt with before someone gets seriously hurt or killed.
The steering wheel began making a clicking and crunching sound in June 2022. Happening inconsistently the issue was not looked into right away. In October 2022 the issue escalated with the power steering disengaging completely when the wheel was making the noise. The steering wheel becomes so hard and immovable, locking all most. The steering wheel waning light comes on and hydroplane slippery warning as well. The engine also shudders and turns off sometimes when cold and warm.
The system malfunction would be the power steering. As I turned the car on and then proceeded to go in reverse out of my driveway, my steering wheel locked up as I made a left. A red steering wheel with exclamation mark popped up on my dashboard and steering wheel was locked. I believe the outcome would have been extremely unsafe If it would have happened on the road, because I had no control of steering
Electric power steering randomly fails while driving, causing a huge safety issue.
1.loss of power steering vehicle is available for inspection.2. Person that was operating vehicle when it lost power steering didnt have the strength to handle steering could of led to an accident causing personal injury or property damage.3. The power steering stop working and the wheel it's hard to manuver. Very difficult to make turns
I purchased a brand new Hyundai Sonata SE in 2017. After 1.5 years, I took a 3-4 hour road trip from Houston to Longview, TX. During that trip, my steering wheel locked and I could not turn the wheel as my traction and steering wheel light lit up on my dashboard. To remedy the problem, I had to turn the engine off and back on. There was no accident but there could have been since I was driving amongst other vehicles on the interstate. This was the first of many scary incidents with my locked steering wheel. I've reported and submitted this complaint to Hyundai but they have done nothing to remedy the problem. The Hyundai dealership explained they cannot do anything unless there diagnostic machine can detect the problem. I explained that it normally happens while I'm driving and that there are several online and Youtube reviews of other 2017 Hyundai Sonata vehicle owners with the same issue. I also showed the traction and steering wheel lights that come on when the steering wheel locks. Still there was nothing they could do. The vehicle is getting increasingly worse as I now must turn it off and on three times before the steering wheel unlocks. This is a danger to myself, my children, pedestrians, and other drivers. The steering wheel locks unexpectedly and without warning. I facilitate large groups and happen to mention my issue with the 2017 Hyundai Sonata today. They were alarmed about the dangers to myself and others while driving the 2017 Hyundai Sonata SE. I explained that it was previously reported to Hyundai and NHTSA but nothing was done to remedy the problem. The group encouraged me to report it again. I'm doing so with little to no confidence that mentioning it will do anything. It may take someone or people being killed or seriously hurt before anything is done. I can't afford another vehicle and need it for transportation. Otherwise I would have purchased another brand of vehicle.
2017 Hyundai Sonata’s electric power steering is having an undiagnosable issue. Mechanics cannot figure it out only speculate since Hyundai has no remedies for this issue. The axle has been replaced and suspension inspected and the issue persists. Crunch when turning left usually a hard left at or more than 180 degrees. Vehicle has resistance if not kickback or tension when turning left, but turning right has little to no resistance at all. You could be parked, driving, or backing up and the vehicle makes hard crunch noises to the left. Also, when the sounds and issue becomes frequent (its intermittent) the steering wheel will kick to the right and lock up. There is a traction control light that comes on and a red steering wheel light with an exclamation point that pops on. If you turn off car and turn back on the issue and lights go away. This is extremely dangerous. It has happened to myself and my husband 3 separate occasions, different times of day, different temperatures and roughly a speed under 20 mph. The jolt and locking up of steering wheel is someone’s death waiting to happen. Extremely unsafe to drive.
As I am driving, at random times, typically at cruising speeds of about 40 mph or less, the STEERING wheel will lock up and I will be unable to STEER the vehicle until I turn the car off and back on again. There are typically some warning lights (i’ll try to attach the picture) that pop up and go away once the car is turned off and back on again. No dealership that I have taken it to has been able to diagnose the problem since it does not, to my disdain, occur under their watch (it is not reproduced). This issue puts both my life and EVERYONE in my proximity’s life at risk as I have NO CONTROL of the vehicle once it locks up. At this point it has occurred for over 2 years that I have had this car. There are some warning signs right before it occurs. First, there is typically a sudden change in the resistance of the steering wheel. Particularly, it will become harder to move the steering wheel left but then turning it right will have NO resistance. As soon as this occurs I start to panic because it indicates that ANY turn at that point will lock the steering wheel. It has occurred this way every single time. Sometimes it happens in the opposite direction and the right side becomes stiff and suddenly any turn in the steering locks it up. This is VERY dangerous and can potentially kill. This model needs to be recalled!
While driving the electric power steering locked and I couldn’t turn while driving. Hit curb and someone’s personal property. I was so frustrated because there wasn’t anything I could do. The steering locks up and you can’t move it.
The steering wheel is not responsive when pulling out of parking I.e when turning to pull out of parking. When I attempt to turn left or right the steering wheel pops and makes a noise it distracts daily driving as it makes you think you hit something or were involved in a crash. 09/01/2022 On 09/07/2022 I brought my car in to maxon hyndai in New Jersey and Informed them of the problem I have been having with the steering on my car. I checked my wheels , brakes and suspension and that is not the issue at a mechanic shop 09/01/22 Hyndai moter America whom I bought the car from is always made aware of my issue as I reported my incident to them as well. The dealership won’t pick up my calls and the Hyundai customer service is not helpful. Hyundai Motor America sent me a correspondence that the car is under warranty for up to 150,000 miles but are trying to give me the run around. I called on 09/07/2022 and spoke with Tiffany the case manager at Hyundai Motor America the corporation and it took her 3 weeks to finally get back to me and to let me know that customer service from Hyundai had forwarded me to the wrong department as her department doesn’t resolve warranty issues. When I told her this was a dishonest act and that Hyundai is lying about MDPS extended warranty her reply was she’s only doing what the company told her. Below attached is the official correspondence from Hyundai motor America The invoice concern when I brought it in for service at Maxon Hyundai in New Jersey And last is a picture of my car parked at the dealership on 09/07/2022 after being inspected my Maxon Hyundai telling me there is no defect on the steering on my car while my steering wheel is turned at 180 degree angle and the wheels are still straight I also have a video of the incident if need be
My 2017 Hyundai Sonata hybrid is having power steering problems, it has literally locked on me while driving it is really unsafe for me and my husband to be driving with my new born child. I have taken the car to Hyundai dealer to get it “fix” they are never able to do anything! Because the “problem hasn’t presented itself” so they can’t fix it. I got a letter from the mail stating a EXTENDED WARRANTY was given to me because my car may exhibit reduced power steering assist and/or motor driven power steering (MDPS) I showed this extended warranty to the dealer and they still can’t do ANYTHING To my car…I’ve seen so many videos on this same problem I’m having others are having it to and nothing is being done by Hyundai dealer to fix it. It seems like we need to crash or hurt ourselves for someone to finally realize and do something…I’m surprised there is no RECALL on this no power steering problem. Hope to get it resolved soon…thank you!!
The electronic power steering sporadically fails. This has happened 3 time in the last two months. The frequency of occurrences are now closer. When this happens the car is almost impossible to steer, it would be unsafe to attempt to operate the car on a public road. The majority of the time when this happens it's when the car is started (regardless if the vehicle is cold or warm). It did happen once while the car was moving at approximate 45 mph. Turning the car off and back on will stop the problem. A warning light on the dash appears when the problem happens. We unsuccessfully tried to recreate the problem so it can be diagnosed from the dealer. The dealer stated in conversation that is difficult if not impossible to diagnose a problem when it is not occurring.
Steering has locked up or become extremely difficult to manipulate on 4 occasions. Carried it to the dealership after first time and they said since the code was still not up there was nothing they could do. Has failed 3 more times with latest issue almost causing a wreck with my wife. This is NOT normal wear and tear!
As I was turning my car into a parking spot the steering locked up on me. I tried to turn the wheel left and right and I simply couldn't do it at all. I turned the vehicle off and turned it back on after a few seconds and it seemed to fix itself. It's been 1 day since this incident happened and I'm afraid it could happen again. Luckily I wasn't on a highway or I could've been seriously injured!
My steering wheel is locked it’s hard to turn left or right. I go to school in a different city so I drive back and forth from school to home. While I was turning into the parking lot to park my steering wheel just locked while I was trying to park i almost hit someone’s car in the process. I had to turn the steering wheel with both hands tightly to one side for the steering wheel to move. I was so scared
The power steering system appears to be failing. There is no indication of the failure prior to failing. When making turns the power steering would randomly stop working, all emergency lights would turn on, and the steering would become extremely difficult to control. This becomes an extreme safety issue when I’m driving around other vehicles. I took my vehicle to a mechanic and they explained that the power steering is electronic, therefore power steering fluid will not fix the problem. Also, there’s an electrical issue with the windows as well. The passenger window can no longer can be controlled by the driver. Lastly, the AC has failed as well. It blows out only hot air. I’ve taken my car to the manufacture dealership and they assessed my vehicle for the AC problem, but they stated that it’s working fine. This is not true because I’ve continued to have problems with the AC, even after many failed troubleshooting attempts. To summarize my report, I have a total of 3 issues in order of importance, power steering, power windows/electrical, and air conditioning unit. My car is available immediately for inspection upon request. Thank you.
Steering Wheel locked while turning. I got a red light on the dashboard. I had to restart the engine again to unlock it. Continued driving for 5 minutes and it happened again.
The power steering on my 2017 Sonata went out all the sudden while I was making a turn in a parking lot on 7/03/2022. The red power steering warning light and the yellow traction control warning light came on and the steering wheel locked up, please see attached picture. I almost hit a parked car because I was not able I complete my turn. This is the 2nd time happened to this 2017 Sonata in 5 weeks and it was as scary as the 1st time (05/28/2022) because there was no warning before malfunction happened. The power steering would restore and warning lights would turn off after the engine restarted. I contacted my local Hyundai service department in Fremont, CA, they told me they can’t inspect my Sonata until early December because they don’t have any available appointment for diagnostic until December. I told the service advisor that this is a series safety issue, but no further assistance was provided. Please investigate this safety issue because clearly there is something wrong with the electric power steering system and it will put other drivers and pedestrians in danger.
My power steering stopped working while driving my car I can’t turn car left or right and no way to know how to fix it unless I spend 1000 at a dealership and it’s a dangerous situation
While driving my 2017 Sonata on a winding backroad my power steering suddenly locked up without warning, and I was unable to turn the vehicle left or right. Prior to this incident there were no warning or check engine lights lit indicating any type of issue with my car, and my power steering was operating normally. I hit, and jumped a curb striking a rock wall attempting to turn slightly left to keep myself in my lane, and on the road damaging the right passenger side rim and fender. After coming to a stop I noticed there were two warning lights that had activated. I immediately called my local Hyundai dealer (Imperial Hyundai of Milford Massachusetts) informing them of what had happened, and scheduled a service appointment to have this issue diagnosed. I was informed by the dealership that Hyundai is having issues with their electric assist steering motor, and computer module which controls the steering assist motor. Had this been my wife or son this would have definitely turned out differently, because I'm over 240lbs and could barely get the steering wheel to turn at all prior to hitting the curb. After shutting off the car, and then restarting it repeatedly for approx 30 minutes suddenly the service lights went out, and the vehicle started operating normally again. My appointment at the Hyundai dealer is on July 13, 2022. I was told Hyundai has extended the warranty on parts associated with the steering system, but they wouldn't tell me which parts are covered or not covered. That is the least of my concerns, because like I said had I not been the driver, or if this had happened at highway speed this could have been tragic. It's a serious safety issue
Steering wheel locked twice in one day up in my neighborhood while I was driving back to the house had to turn the car off and turn back on for steering wheel because unstuck the second time was on the highway going 65 mph had to pull over to the side of the road turn the car off and back on so steering wheel could go back to normal all fluid is top off.

Electronic Power Steering failed in the 2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid SE. As I was turning left the dashboard showed the EPS warning light, and EPS completely failed. Power steering locked, and I was unable to steer the car. I immediately put my hazard lights on to avoid any accident. I turned the vehicle off, waited a few seconds, and turned it back on. Steering was still extremely tight; I forced the steering wheel to turn slowly and gradually moved the car out of traffic. This was an extremely scary experience. My 3-year-old daughter was in the back in her car seat, and I consider ourselves to be very lucky on this date.
Steering wheel locks in place and will not unlock until the vehicle is completely stopped and turned off. Turing the vehicle back on will unlock the wheel. This happens at speeds between 10-65 mph and is extremely dangerous. This is an intermittent issue and happens on slight turn, sharp turns, low and high speed. It also happens in forward and reverse.
My power steering went out while I was driving - twice this week. Fortunately, I was still in my driveway when it happened. Vehicle has only has 23,00 miles on it. The dealers stated a new Power Steering Control Module was needed. Cost to repair: $1800.
Mileage: 23,000
I just dropped my daughter off at her friend's house and was returning home whereas I was coming around the curve the steering locked up and I almost hit a car that was on the opposite side of the road. This needs to be fixed.
My wife was driving the car on her way back from the grocery and the car locked up on her. She had to go off the side of the road to turn it off and back on so she could have the steering wheel controlled.
On 5/28/2022 at 6:26pm PST, I was driving about 15 MPH on a local street in my neighborhood in Hayward, CA. All of the sudden, my power steering wheel locked up and without power steering. I can’t turn or steer my vehicle in any direction and both the red electronic power steering light and the traction control warning light were light up on the dashboard. I stopped my car in the middle of the road because it was extremely scary and dangerous that I didn’t have any steering control of my car at all. I didn’t know what to do, so I turned off the engine and I restarted my vehicle just to see what happen and both the electronic power steering light and traction control warning light disappeared. And the power steering is back to normal. I contacted Hyundai dealership and reported my dangerous incident. The representative of Hyundai dealer said they can’t replicate the problem and there is no opened power steering recall for my 2017 Hyundai Sonata. My incident happened without any warning and the power steering failure is extremely dangerous to the driver and other drivers on the road, please take this power steering issue seriously before anyone is seriously hurt or killed. If you have any questions and need more information, please contact me. I also have a short video of the entire incident recorded by my dash-cam, so it can be provided if it is helpful.
I was getting over into the turning lane going about 35mph on a public road and the power steering locked up the wheel I had to pull over to the side and turn the car off and turn back on me and my daughter was in the car as we were going to see the progress of our home being built.
I was taking my daughter to her STARR Testing site on the street and the steering wheel locked up on me while my daughter was in the car and traffic was around us, I made it to a red light and where I was able to turn the car off and turn it back on to get the power sterling of the house
Lost Steering power sitting at the ATM machine as I was pulling from the machine the steering wheel locked up, I had to pull into an empty parking spot and turn the car off and turn the car back on to have the steering wheel work proper again good thing it was at 8am when no one was really out.
Roughly 6 months ago the problem first occurred while backing up in a parking lot a steering wheel lit up on the dash as well as a traction control light in which then the steering wheel became hard to turn or loss of power steering. about 4 months ago the same thing occurred while driving the vehicle making a right turn power steering got tough and I had to slam on the brakes or I would have hit a another vehicle. And today the same thing happened while pulling into a parking lot I do have video and pictures of the situation The vehicle was taken to the Hyundai dealer last week where they had the vehicle for 3 days just to tell me the issue is not present or can't be duplicated so nothing was fixed. I got this vehicle from my wife and kids and now I don't want them around it. Don't understand how Hyundai has not put out a recall on this one search of the internet shows thousands of complaints about the same situation with the power steering
Car steering will has locked up while driving as I was making a turn the steering wheel has locked to where it is hard to steer. This happened 6 months ago the same thing happened and then it went away I took the car to Hyundia and left it there for 2 weeks, but it didn't lock up there is no diagnostic code for it. I was on the highway driving straight and it locked up as well. The car has been doing this now on and off for about 3 weeks now. This needs to be recalled but Hyundia is not trying to do nothing until someone is hurt.
I was coming home with my family from the grocery store as we were coming around the turn the car steering wheel locked up on the road Luckly i was the only car on the road at the time, so I had to pull over turn the car of and turn it back on and it went back to normal. This has been happing now for the past 2 week after 6 months when it first started.
I was driving into work in the parking lot and the steering wheel locked as I was pulling into parking lot going around the building. I had to turn the car off and then back on for the steering wheel could go back to normal.
When I was coming home from my parents' house the steering wheel locked up two times on the way back from there. Both times I had to pull off to the side of road and turn the car off and then back on for the steering wheel to go back to normal this has not happened in 6 months I've called Hyundai and told them about it and they are not willing to do a recall.
I own a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. About a year ago I was driving it and suddenly the steering wheel froze and I lost control of my car. Two warning lights went on. I pulled off the road to a safe place, struggling to turn the steering wheel in the direction I needed to go. I turned the car off. When I turned the car back on, everything seemed normal. The next day I took it to the Hyundai Dealer in Renton, WA. They ran it through a $180 diagnostic but couldn’t come up with a problem. Fast forward to May 1, 2022. As I was leaving a parking lot the steering froze up and it was hard to control just like the first incident. Two lights came on, the stabilizing and a triangle with an ! indicator lights. Again, I turned the engine off and back on and it worked normally. 30 miles later while maneuvering a turn, the car froze up again in heavy traffic. Turning the car off and back on fixed it. Today I took the car back to the same Renton Car Pro Hyundai. They determined this time that the steering column needed to be replaced for a cost of $2005 and it wasn’t under warranty. (the mechanic said that it expired 12000 miles earlier---about a year ago). I have since researched the internet on this problem, and it is widely known that this is a problem has affected many Sonata drivers. https://www.carproblemzoo.com/hyundai/sonata/steering-problems2.php This problem causes extreme safety issues. It causes the driver to lose control of the vehicle. It appears to happen at unknown or predictable times and gives the feeling of being in a very unsafe auto. This car has 73k miles and has not been in any accidents. I am the original owner and have had regular servicing on the vehicle. I believe it is important for the auto makers to be held accountable for having so many vehicles with this problem. It is an expense that should not fall onto the owner of the car. I hope you will research the documented reports of many, many incidents where the steering has froze up during operation.
Vehicle’s engine began to emit a knocking sound that would increase in volume and speed as engine progressed in speed. Engine suddenly lost power, check engine light began to flash and traction control disabled itself. Vehicle was pulled over and turned off when it immediately began to rapidly self immolate over the course of minutes while the power to the engine was completely disabled.
Was driving and the steering wheel became hard to steer. Had two lights come on the dash, steering wheel with an exclamation point and the traction control. I was able to pull over and shut the car off. I waited a few minutes and turned the car back on. The lights went off and steering was back.
power steering went out, apparently this is common with this year/model but there is still not a recall on it
"Steering wheel exclamation" red warning dash light came up on dash and lost all power steering abilities.
Steering wheel and response was "intermittently" grinding and non-responsive. This situation has occurred sporadically over the course of the fall of 2021. On December 17, 2021 while on the way to work, the steering system "froze" while I was driving and put me in a very dangerous and hazardous situation. Dash warning lights indicated a red steering wheel symbol with a cross-line and the orange anti-skid symbol at the time of the incident. I immediately stopped the car and turned it off. Upon re-start, all dash warning lights were off and the steering seemed to work normally. I next carefully and slowly drove the car to my local car repair shop. They could not duplicate the problem, but felt certain it was the electronic power steering module that was failing intermittently. My local shop strongly recommended I have the vehicle towed to the Hyundai dealership for evaluation and repair. I had the car towed to Huffines Hyundai in Plano, Texas on Dec. 21, 2021. After three weeks in at the Huffines Plano Service Shop, the service manager called and stated they are unable to duplicate the problem and to "come pick up your car". I have called and created an incident report with Hyundai National Help line, but to date, no resolution has been offered other than "come get your car". This is clearly a driver and road safety issue. When the steering failed, I could not turn the wheel at all. The car was out of my control. Stopping was the only thing I still had control of, and even this was dangerous as I was on a very busy 6-lane divided thoroughfare. This electrical (or mechanical) failure put me and all other drivers around in a dangerous situation. Clearly, I am not comfortable retrieving this car and putting it back on the road. Please Advise my next best step(s)
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel locked, and the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer reset the steering sensor however, the steering wheel felt loose. Additionally, the steering wheel inadvertently moved to the right and was stiff while making left turns. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and diagnosed with rack and pinion failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but denied the claim since the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000.
Mileage: 91,000
The electrical steering system lock up. If I cannot steer it a big safety problem for me and other drivers Will call dealer today (not sure if it must be towed) No inspection yet Yes I did get a waring lamp light but the streeing wheel could not be moved ( light came on after staring car
When steering right in a corner of a traffic light the car loss the Electric Power Steering and it became very hard to steer the car. The Electric Power steering light and the Traction Control light went On. I drove straight to a safe location where I pulled over, the steering wheel was very hard to turn. I shut down the car to check the car manual. After approximately 5 min, I started up the car again, I noticed the electric power steering came on again and the ESP & TC lights were not visible any more. I drove home to park the car. The failure did not show again.
3 times steering has locked up while driving. Had to turn vehicle off and back on to get it working again. Have not driven since last incident as it is too dangerous. Will tow to mechanic to have it looked at. Have read many complaints from other owners with same problem. Hyundai has not issued recall for this problem and not admit it is a problem. This is serious and could cause death or serious injury.
The steering collar has locked up while driving home and on the street 4x's since Mid August. I was lucky that I was strong enough to get it to turn and I was able to turn the car off and back on and the steering wheel went back to regular control. This is a serious issue that Hyundai will not do a recall on. My family and I could be in the car and this could have happen. The biggest problem is that this can not be confirmed by any one there is not diagnosis code for a steering collar. The waring lights come on at the same time once the wheel locks up on you. You have to stop the car turn it off and turn it back on so it can work properly once it happens.
The steering wheel continuously locks up when pulling out of the driveway or a parking spot. It has gotten to the point where it was completely locked and my car is now unable to be driven. It also has locked while driving on the road twice prior to that. No warning signs popped up before the situation happened. Usually when it would happen, I would turn the car on and off, and the issue would be resolved, but now I’m unable to drive my car as it has completely locked. I brought the car in prior to this to the Hyundai dealership in Puyallup, WA, and they advised that the MDPS column needs to be replaced which will cost $3,000. I asked them if they have received any complaints about this, and they stated that they haven’t, yet when I look online I see hundreds of Hyundai owners stating that they have had similar issues with their power steering. Clearly the cars need to be recalled immediately has this is a safety hazard for many Hyundai owners.
Power steering failure on 07/27/2021 as reported in complaint number 11427000. It took until 08/24/2021 to have the vehicle checked at Ricart Automotive in Columbus Ohio. The problem could not be duplicated at the dealer and no error codes were found. The car is not considered safe to drive by the owner, since I do not know when or under what conditions the power steering will malfunction again. 28000 miles, original owner.
On two occasions my steering wheel locked up completely. Fortunately at the times I was only maneuvering my car at low speeds and I was able to stop the car in time. I was only able to regain steering after shutting off the engine and restarting. Both times the lockups occurred immediately following a “hard over” steering wherein the steering wheel was held against a stop. i.e.,the wheel could turn no further. After rebooting the startup, the steering returned to normal. I’m a little reluctant to try this maneuver again but I’m sure that the lockup could be repeated.
On numerous occasions, the steering wheel feels loose after starting but then begins to work normally. On 7/27/2021, as I was backing out of the driveway, there was excessive steering wheel motion where the wheels did not turn at all even though the steering wheel was turned in each direction about 10 degrees. Then the power steering completely stopped working at all, and I had to steer the car to the curb with extreme effort since the power assist was completely gone. Several dash warning lights were illuminated including the traction control light. After turning the car off, and then back on, the steering was back to normal. I have continued driving the car for the last three days and the problem has not recurred. But I am very nervous about the safety aspect of this and don't enjoy driving the car anymore. I am the original owner of the car and it only has about 28000 miles on it.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 70 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The vehicle was restarted, and the power steering functionality was restored. The contact stated that the traction control and power steering warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.
Mileage: 72,000
Was driving on a busy road. Turned the corner and went to accelerate and once I hit 45 my steering locked up, couldn't turn or adjust my vehicle at all. I had my 3 kids in the car and was lucky we could get to the side of the road. Shut off the car and started it up and seemed fine. Then later that day i was driving on highway going 65 and my steering locked up and I couldn't drive. Lucky it was early morning and no traffic because I was able to get to the side of the road. This needs to be recalled before someone loses their life!
The power steering on 2017 Hyundai Sonata's will randomly stop working while I am driving. It started as an every month occurrence and now has become more than weekly occurrence. The steering locks up and two light indicators illuminate on the dashboard. These two lights are not on prior to the random power steering failure. My family's safety is at risk every time this occurs as are those on the road near my vehicle. I purchased this vehicle from my 88 year old grandmother. This extreme safety problem would have killed her had it happened when she was driving. I have taken the vehicle to a local dealership who seemed to be aware of the notorious problem on 2017 Sonata's but they explained that they are unable to reproduce the failure in their shop, so they are unable to fix the problem.
I had just left my house and had stopped to turn on main road. My steering wheel jerked a little and then when I went to turn it was extremely hard to turn. I pulled over to let my husband try and he had a hard time. The steering wheel light and an exclamation point came on and the traction lights came on but it was not even raining. We took the car to the dealership and they said it was a sensor in the steering column. It would cost $2000.00 to repair it. My car only has 67500 miles on it. They said the 100000 mile power/Tran warranty does not cover the steering column... I search online about steering issues with the Sonata and it seems very common. The 2015 models have a recall fir this issue. Had I been on a very busy street this could have been extremely dangerous because I could not control the steering of my car at all. I called the Hyundai Corporation and they said sorry there has to be a class action lawsuit with hundreds of names for a recall to be issued. They said to keep my records and if the model is recalled then they will reimburse me. We are in a pandemic and I don’t have the extra 2000 lying around to spend on a manufacturing safety error.
I had just left my house and was just a few miles down the road turning onto the main highway. The steering wheel jerked and then The steering wheel locked up like it had no power steering and I could not turn the wheel. Three lights came on on the dashboard, an exclamation point, a steering wheel and the traction lights all came on. It was a sunny day and there was no rain the pavement was not slick. I had to pull over on the side of the road and let my husband drive my vehicle. We had to take it in to the dealership and they said it was a sensor in the steering column and the entire steering column would have to be replaced at a cost if $2000.00. This is not a driver error this is a manufacturer error and it is not covered under any warranty. My car only has 67,500 miles on it and this should be recalled for the 2017 Hyundai Sonata‘s. After researching online about steering issues with the Hyundai Sonata’s I discovered that the 2015 Hyundai sonata’s have been recalled for the steering and so have the Hyundai ELANTRA’s. I called the Hyundai corporation and they said that there had to be a class action lawsuit for the 2017 models to get a recall. This could have been extremely dangerous had I been on a busier street. Hyundai needs to step up and recall this.
MY STEERING KEEPS LOCKING UP WHILE I AM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. I HAVE TO STOP MY CAR, PUT IT IN PARK AND TURN MY CAR OFF. THEN RESTART MY CAR IN ORDER FOR IT TO UNLOCK. I HAVE ALMOST CAUSE SOME WRECKS. MY CAR IS NOT THAT OLD TO BE HAVING THIS ISSUE. WHEN I WENT ON YOUTUBE TO SEE WHAT I CAN DO TO FIX IT, I FOUND OUT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM.
AS I WAS BACKING INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP, I COULDN'T TURN THE STEERING WHEEL IN EITHER DIRECTION AND THE STEERING WHEEL LIGHT WITH THE EXCLAMATION MARK CAME ON.
THIS MORNING WHILE LEAVING FOR WORK ON A CITY STREET, MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED, AND THE STEERING INDICATOR LIGHT ALONG WITH THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON. AT THE TIME, I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, AND I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF TURNING. AFTER REVIEWING SIMILAR INSTANCES ONLINE, IT IS APPARENT THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, AND COULD BE DEADLY. IT'S UNACCEPTABLE THAT A RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED. I CALLED HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE, AND WAS ADVISED THAT SINCE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY MY ONLY OPTION IS TO BRING IT TO THE DEALER AND PAY FOR AN INSPECTION AND REPAIRS MYSELF. THIS IS A MANUFACTURES SAFETY ISSUE, AND IT NEEDS A RECALL. I CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS ADVISED THAT I CAN BRING THE CAR IN AND PAY FOR AN INSPECTION, BUT THEY WOULD PROBABLY NEED TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. WHY HAS NOTHING BEEN DONE ABOUT THIS?? IS HYUNDAI WAITING FOR PEOPLE TO BE SEVERELY INJURED OR EVEN KILLED?

AS I WAS DRIVING YESTERDAY. A STEERING WHEEL LIGHT WHICH AN EXPLANATION POINT NEXT TO IT POPPED UP AND THEN AS SOON AS IT DID MY STEERING WHEEL GOT HARD AND WOULD NOT TURN. THANKFULLY I WAS ON A SMALL ROAD AND ABLE TO DRIVE OFF TO THE SIDE SAFELY OR ELSE WHO KNOWS I COULD OF BEEN ON A BRIDGE AND FLEW OFF DUE TO NOT BEING ABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AT ALL! I WOULD HOPE THIS COULD BE FIXED AS A RECALL SEEMING AS IT HAS HAPPENED TO MANY PEOPLE.

I WAS DRIVING AND MY STEERING WHEEL RANDOMNLY LOCKS UP. PULLING MY CAR IN DIFFERENT LANES. I READ SO MANY OF THE SAME COMPLAINTS. Y'ALL NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.*DT
THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL INSTANCES WHEN I HAVE BEEN DRIVING AND STEERING WOULD MAKE A CLICKING NOT AND THEN IT WOULD GET TIGHT AND THE STEERING LIGHT WOULD COME ALONG WITH SERIAL OTHER LIGHTS AND I WOULD HAVE TO TURN MY CAR OFF AND THEN TURN IT BACK. LUCKILY I WAS DRIVING AT A LOW SPEED. I HAVE TAKEN MY CARE TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND THEY WERE NOT ABLE REPAIR IT BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT REPEAT THE PROBLEM I WAS TOLD TAKE THE NEXT TIME IT OCCURRED. AS OF YESTERDAY 11/25/2020 MY STEERING MY CAR TO THE LEFT HAS BECOME EXTREMELY DIFFICULT.

I WAS DRIVING THIS MORNING, AND MY 2017 HYUNDAI WAS MANEUVERING AS IF THERE WERE TOO MUCH POWER STEERING FLUID. WITH EVERY LANE CHANGE, IT WAS AS IF I WAS GOING TO CRASH. ABOUT 4 HOURS LATER, I WENT TO GRAB MY SON AND SAME THING. CAR MOVING VERY EASILY. TURNING COULD BE DONE WITH MY PINKY. AS I WAS TURNING INTO MY STREET, ALL OF A SUDDEN IT'S AS IF SOMETHING WAS HOLDING MY CAR BACK. THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. THANK GOD I WAS RIGHT BY THE HOUSE. RED STEERING WHEEL AND EXCLAIMATION POINT NOTIFICATION APPEARED ON MY DASHBOARD.
Mileage: 34,500
WAS DRIVING AND THE STEERING GOT VERY TIGHT MAKING IT HARD TO EVEN SLIGHTLY TURN VEHICLE LUCKILY I WAS DRIVING AT A VERY LOW SPEED AND COULD ADJUST. RED LIGHT WITH EXCLAMATION POINT AND STEERING WHEEL SHOWED WHEN IT HAPPENED

THE POWER STEERING HAS GONE OUT ON MY VEHICLE TWICE IN 2 MONTHS. THE FIRST TIME, I WAS DRIVING DOWN A CITY STREET AND HAD JUST TURNED RIGHT INTO A PARKING LOT. AS I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL TO PARK, THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. IT WAS SCARY; IT TOOK A LOT OF TURNING OF THE STEERING WHEEL TO SAFELY MANEUVER OUT OF THE WAY OF THE PARKING LOT TRAFFIC. THE SECOND TIME, I HAD JUST LEFT MY HOUSE TO TAKE MY VEHICLE IN FOR ITS 15,000 MILE SERVICE. LESS THAN 3 MINUTES AWAY FROM MY HOUSE, AS I WAS MAKING A RIGHT TURN ON A CITY STREET, THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. IT WAS HARD TO MANEUVER THE CAR OUT OF TRAFFIC, BUT I WAS ABLE TO DO SO. IN BOTH INSTANCES, I HEARD CLICKING NOISES PRIOR TO THE POWER STEERING GOING OUT. THE FIRST TIME THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT, I HEARD A CLICKING NOISE AS I WAS TURNING INTO THE PARKING LOT. THE SECOND TIME THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT, I HEARD CLICKING NOISES AS I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY. MY CAR SAT IN MY DRIVEWAY WITH ME DRIVING IT ONLY TWICE BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND INCIDENCE OF THE POWER STEERING GOING OUT. I ONLY DROVE IT THE SECOND TIME TO GET THE 15,000 MILE SERVICE AND TO SEE IF THE DEALERSHIP COULD FIX THE PROBLEM. I ENDED UP HAVING THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CAR. SO FAR, THE DEALERSHIP SAYS IT IS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY CAN'T REPLICATE IT.

CARS STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP AND CAR DIES OUT ON TURNS ON ANY ROAD, HIGHWAY OR SPEED . LAST ISSUE WHILE ENTERING A FREEWAY. CAR MUST SIT THEN RESTARTED TO ALLOW IT TO BE USABLE. NO WARNING GIVEN WHEN THIS HAPPENS. CONTACTED DEALERSHIP. NO HELP WAS GIVEN.HAS BEEN AN ISSUES SINCE PURCHASE. AT LEASE 15 TIMES IN ONE YEAR.

I WAS LEAVING WORK, PLACED THE CAR IN REVERSE, THAN DRIVE AND THE THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP ON ME. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR BACK INTO A PARKING SPOT WITH MUCH DIFFICULTY. THE EPS LIGHT WAS LIT ALONG WITH ANOTHER WARNING SYMBOL. I WAS VERY LUCKY I WAS ONLY IN A PARKING LOT AND NOT ON THE ROAD. WHEN I SPOKE WITH THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP THEY ACTED LIKE THIS WAS NOT A PROBLEM. UPON RESEARCHING THIS SITE I SEE OTHERWISE . THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL, THIS IS NOT A SAFE CAR TO DRIVE, SOME PEOPLE HAVE HAD MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH THE EPS SYSTEM . THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE.
Mileage: 61,000
I EXITED THE FREEWAY ON BUCHANAN IN ALBANY, CA AND WAIT AT THE RED LIGHT. AS THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN I TRIED PRESSING ON THE PEDDLE. I GOT NO RESPONSE FROM MY CAR AND IT FELT LIKE MY CAR WAS COMPLETELY SHUT OFF. QUICKLY I PUT MY CAR IN PARK AND TURN MY KEY TO THE OFF POSITION I DIDN'T FEEL MY CAR LOSE ANY POWER AT ALL IT WAS LIKE IT WAS ALREADY OFF RADIO WASN'T WORKING ANYMORE EITHER. I TURNED THE KEY TO CRANK MY CAR BACK ON AND IT STARTS UP IMMEDIATELY. I'VE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM HAPPEN TO ME 3 TIMES NOW TWICE IN THE SAME EXACT SPOT. THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED MY ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON SHORTLY AFTER THAN IT DISAPPEARED. MY TRANSMISSION WENT OUT IN THE FIRST CAR I OWNED SO I'M 1000% PERCENT SURE THAT WASN'T THE ISSUE. I HAD TO GET THE TRANNY ON MY FIRST CAR REPLACED TWICE I'M VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE THAT STUFF. MY QUESTION IS WHAT CAN THIS BE? I'VE HEARD ABOUT HYUNDAI ENGINES CATCHING ON FIRE. MY DAUGHTER WAS IN THE CAR TWO OF THOSE TIMES SO THAT'S PRETTY SCARY TO ME.
MY CAR STEERING GOT LOCKED WHEN I WAS DRIVING AND MAKE THE TURN. THE STEERING WARNING SIGN AND THE TRACTION LIGHT POP UP IN THE DASH BOARD. THE CAR STEERING WHEEL USE TO GET OFF SYNC.
Mileage: 64,795
THE POWER STEERING AND TRACTION CONTROL WILL GO OUT IN THIS VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAYS SPEEDS. I HAVE NOW HAD 5 INSTANCES WHERE THIS HAS HAPPENED. THIS IS A VERY WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE 2017 SONATA AND THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED!!
Mileage: 75,000
THIS IS THE FOURTH TIME I'VE EXPERIENCED THIS WHILE OPERATING MY VEHICLE. ON SEPTEMBER 12 , 2020 WHILE OPERATING MY VEHICLE ON A CITY STREET MY STEERING LIGHT POPPED ON ALONG WITH MY TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT. MY STEERING WHEEL IMMEDIATE LOCKED UP AND I HAD NO CONTROL . I STRUGGLED TO VEER THE VEHICLE INTO A GAS STATION. UPON PULLING INTO THE GAS STATION I TURNED MY VEHICLE OFF AND STARTED IT BACK UP AND THE STEERING LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT WAS OFF SO I PRECEDED TO DRIVE.
Mileage: 95,000
STEERING- WILL LOSE CONTROL OF STEERING AS THE STEERING WHEEL WILL LOCK UP AND BECOME TO HARD TO TURN. THIS HAPPEB WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN. ALSO WHILE DRIVING AT 65MPH. I HAD TO KILL MY CAR AND TURN IT BACK ON. SPEED CONTROL-WILL TAKE OFF OR SLOW DOWN AS IT WANTS. CAR CHANGES BETWEEN ECO MODE OR SPORT MODE AND I HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF WHEN IT WILL DO IT OR WHEN IT HAS. CAR WILL JUMP WHEN IN PARK AND FOOT ON BRAKES.
Mileage: 88,500
DRIVING FROM WORK MY CAR STEERING SEIZED UP. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS CAME ON. THEN I SHUT CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT. THEN POWER STEERING WAS BACK AND INDICATOR LIGHT WERE GONE. IT HAPPEN MULTIPLE OF TIMES
I WAS PULLING OUT OF A GAS STATION ON MOHEGAN SUN BLVD IN UNCASVILLE, CT AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AND THE SYMBOL OF A STEERING WHEEL AND AN EXCLAMATION POINT APPEARED PLUS THE SKID SYMBOL ON MY DASHBOARD. I WAS IN A DANGEROUS SPOT AND THE SECURITY PEOPLE STOPPED TO HELP. WE TRIED RESTARTING THE CAR AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED. THIS TIME THE STEERING WHEEL JUST SPUN AROUND AND AROUND BUT I COULDN'T MOVE THE CAR. I CALLED AAA AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE KEY HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IN MILFORD CT 66 MILES AWAY FROM THE SCENE. I HAD TO CALL MY SON IN FAIRFIELD TO COME TO GET ME AS THE COVID-19 VIRUS SITUATION DIDN'T ALLOW FOR ME TO RIDE WITH THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER. I WILL BE FOREVER NERVOUS ABOUT DRIVING THIS CAR NOW. I SEE IT HAS HAPPENED TO OTHERS. I WAS TURNING INTO THE HIGHWAY FROM THE GAS STATION WHEN THE WHEEL SUDDENLY LOCKED UP AND HAD A MIND OF ITS OWN. I AM LUCKY NO ONE WAS DRIVING BY AT THE TIME. MY CAR IS PRESENTLY AT KEY HYUNDAI WAITING TO BE SERVICED. SO FAR, I DON'T KNOW WHAT CONDITION ITS IN.
Mileage: 22,250
MY STEERING LOCKED UP AS I WAS DRIVING. I WAS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN AND IT WOULD BARELY TURN. AS I STRAIGHTENED THE STEERING WHEEL IT WAS STILL EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO TURN. I MANAGED TO GET IT PULLED IN TO THE GAS STATION AND TURNED OFF THE MOTOR TO PUMP MY GAS. IT DID FINE AFTER I CRANKED IT BACK UP.
I ASKED THE DEALERSHIP TO CHECK STEERING THEY SAID COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING I DROVE TO FL AND WHILE THERE I WAS MAKING A TURN STEERING WENT OUT. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP THEY SAID IT'S COVERED TO REPLACE AT 60,000 MILES BUT NOT AT 76000 MILES UNDER WARRANTY. I EXPLAINED I ASKED THEM TO CHECK IT AT 40,000 MILES AND THEY SAID NOTHING WRONG. THEY SAID SORRY NOTHING WE CAN DO AND HANDED ME 2500 ESTIMATE. WE EILL BE GETTING RID OF THE CAR AND I WILL NEVER OWN A HYUNDAI AGAIN

2017 HYUNDAI SONATA ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING FAILED WHILE I WAS MAKING A TURN ON 7/25. ONCE THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF AND BACK ON IT WORKS. I NOTICE THAT THERE IS A POP LIKE A POTENTIAL GEAR OR INTERNAL PART IS BROKEN WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL FROM LEFT TO RIGHT AND VISE VERSA. IT HAS SENSE HAPPENED EVERYDAY FOLLOWING THE FIRST EVENT. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMPLAINT MADE BY SEVERAL PEOPLE AND I SEE NO RECALL AS OF YET. HYUNDAI HAS ADDRESSED OLDER VEHICLES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND ISSUED A RECALL BUT NOTHING AS OF YET FOR 2017 OR NEWER. HAD THIS HAPPENED WHILE I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE OR MAKING A SHARP TURN ON A MOUNTAIN ROAD, AS I TYPICALLY DO, IT COULD HAVE FORCED ME INTO THE NEXT CAR, WALL, OR EVEN OFF OF A MOUNTAIN SIDE.
Mileage: 68,425
WITHIN MY 2 MONTHS OF OWNING OWNING THIS 2017 HYUNDAI SONATA, MY STEERING WHEEL HAS LOCKED UP AT LEAST 7 TIMES. A FEW OF THOSE TIMES I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY AND HAD TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE WITH LITTLE TO NO CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL. THE POWER STEERING AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS CAME ON AND I COULD NOT REGAIN CONTROL UNTIL I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND ON AGAIN. I WAS TERRIFIED EVERY SINGLE TIME. THIS LAST TIME I NEARLY LOST MY LIFE BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL ONCE AGAIN LOCKED UP ON THE HIGHWAY AND VEHICLES AROUND ME HAD TO JAM ON BRAKES CAUSING A SCARY BACK UP ON THE HIGHWAY. I'M SEEING FAR TOO MANY OF THE SAME EXACT COMPLAINTS WITH THIS MODEL FOR THERE TO STILL NOT BE A RECALL. SOMEONE COULD BE SERIOUSLY HURT OR WORSE AND I'M SURE HYUNDAI IS AWARE OF THIS. I'M NOT SURE WHAT TO DO TO FIX MY CAR SO IT'S DRIVABLE AGAIN BUT THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.
Mileage: 83,500
4 TIMES OVER PAST 10 MONTHS (3 IN PAST 2 WEEKS) THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT WHEN THE CAR WAS LEFT IN THE SUN LONGER THAN AN HOUR. THE 1ST 3 TIMES THE DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS RE-SET THEMSELVES AND THE POWER STEERING STARTED WORKING AGAIN AFTER TURNING OFF THE CAR AFTER BEING FORCED TO DRIVE HOME THE CAR W/O POWER STEERING. THE LAST TIME THE LIGHTS STAYED ON AND THE POWER STEERING REMAINED INOPERABLE. FOR THE SECOND TIME IN 10 MONTHS, I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER - THIS TIME THEY ARE REPLACING THE STEERING COLUMN AND THE POWER STEERING UNIT. I THOUGHT THAT I HAD SIMPLY BOUGHT A "LEMON" - I HAD TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED LESS THAN A WEEK AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR BUT AFTER LOOKING UP MY MAKE AND MODEL ON CARCOMPLAINTS.COM I REALIZED THAT MANY OTHER SONATAS BESIDES MINE HAVE LOST POWER STEERING, MANY OF THEM WHILE DRIVING (SOME AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS). BESIDES BRAKES, STEERING IS PROBABLY THE BIGGEST SAFETY ISSUE ON ANY CAR. HYUNDAI HAS A REALLY GOOD WARRANTY AND I BOUGHT A MORE COMPREHENSIVE WARRANTY SO MY REPAIRS SHOULD NOT COST ME ANYTHING BUT THE FACT REMAINS, THIS MODEL SONATA HAS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY DEFECT THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY HYUNDAI BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED, IF IT HAS NOT HAPPENED ALREADY. I FEEL FORTUNATE THAT MY POWER STEERING NEVER WENT OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE CAR LIKE MANY OTHERS DID. *TR
Mileage: 53,000
AFTER START CAR, POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHTS ON. DID NOT REALIZED UNTIL BACKING UP FROM PARKING LOT. STEERING LOST POWER AND VERY HARD TO MANAGE. AFTER 1-2 MIN OF TRY TO PARK AGAIN MANUALLY, STEERING BACK TO NORMAL. IT HAPPENS 2 TIMES WITHIN 3 WEEKS. *TR
Mileage: 1
IN PARKING LOT MY STEERING SEIZED UP. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS CAME ON. THEN I SHUT CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT. THEN POWER STEERING WAS BACK AND INDICATOR LIGHT WERE GONE SOME TIME I HAVE TO LEAVE MY CAR PARK LONG TO FIX IT AUTOMATICALLY. *TR

WHILE DRIVING MY VEHICLE, THE STEERING WHEEL WILL LOCK UP AND TUG THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE, THE WHEEL WILL SHOVE AGGRESSIVELY BACK IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. THIS IS ALSO HAPPENING WHEN I FIRST TURN MY VEHICLE ON THE WHEEL LOCKS AND WARNING LIGHTS FOR MY STEERING WILL COME ON. THE VEHICLE IS VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO NOT KNOWING WHEN THIS WILL HAPPEN. IT HAS HAPPENED AROUND 5-6 TIMES IN THE LAST WEEK.

WHILE DRIVING THE 2017 HYUNDAI SONATA AT SPEEDS OF 60 PLUS MPH THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP AND THE POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON ALONG WITH THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS. THIS INCIDENT HAS EVEN CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT FRONT CORNER OF MY HYUNDAI DUE TO LOSING STEERING CAUSING ME TO VEER IN TO THE GUARD RAILS.

ON 01/16/2020 AS I WAS LEAVING WORK PARKING LOT MY STEERING SEIZED UP. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS CAME ON. IT TOOK ABOUT 1 MINUTE TO GET STEERING WHEEL TO MOVE AT ALL, MANAGED TO GET BACK IN PARKING LOT (BARELY) AND SHUT CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT. MY POWER STEERING WAS BACK AND INDICATOR LIGHT WERE GONE. I'M GOING TO DEALERSHIP TOMORROW. ( WILL UPDATE) HAD THIS HAPPENED AT A NORMAL SPEED FOR DIVING, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY DANGEROUS! NOW, I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY ONLY CAR.

ON NOVEMBER 23, 2019 I STARTED MY CAR AND PROCEEDED TO BACK OUT OF MY DRIVE WAY. MY POWER STEERING LOCKED, THE LIGHT CAME ON ALONG WITH MY TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT. I HAD TO FORCE MY STEERING WHEEL TO TURN MY CAR BACK INTO MY DRIVEWAY TO GET IT OFF THE ROADWAY. I TURNED MY CAR OFF, AND BACK ON AND LIGHTS DISAPPEARED AND I HAD CONTROL AGAIN. A FEW WEEKS LATER, DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD MY STEERING GOT TIGHT AND FOUGHT MY CAR TO GET IT HOME. I GOT IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD ME THE WHOLE POWER STEERING COLUMN HAD TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS ALSO A RECALL ON A CLICKING NOISE I HAD BEEN HEARING FOR A FEW MONTHS IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THEY REFUSED TO THINK IT WAS THERE PROBLEM. TODAY JANUARY 2, 2020 I WAS DRIVING ON A STRAIGHT ROAD, GOING 55 MILES PER HOUR. TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON AND POWER STEERING. I LOST CONTROL OF STEERING MY CAR. I HAD JUST ENOUGH TIME TO GET MY CAR OFF THE ROAD TO AVOID GETTING HIT. I TURNED THE CAR OFF, AND THE LIGHTS SEIZED. THIS CAR IS VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND HYUNDAI IS DOING NOTHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM OTHER THAN GIVING EXPENSIVE BILLS TO FIX. THE CAR IS NOT EVEN 3 YEARS OLD, THERE SHOULD NOT BE THIS MANY PROBLEMS ALREADY. ALSO PAINT IS RANDOMLY PEELING ON THE ROOF AND HOOD OF MY CAR.
Mileage: 76,000
I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY WHEN SUDDENLY MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP. I WAS UNABLE TO SWITCH LANES OR MERGE OFF THE FREEWAY. THIS HAS HAPPENED ABOUT 2 MORE TIMES SINCE THE FIRST INCIDENT AND HYUNDAI SAYS THEY ARE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THEY ALSO WILL NOT GIVE ME A LOANER CAR UNTIL THEY CAN RESOLVE THE ISSUE. UNTIL THEN I GUESS I WILL CONTINUE TO DRIVE MY UNSAFE VEHICLE AND HOPE SOMETHING DOES NOT HAPPEN.
Mileage: 50,000
I HAD EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES MAKING NOISE AND NOT REACTING TIMELY THROUGHOUT 2019 BEFORE KNOWLEDGE OF A RECALL. ON 5/15/19 I WENT TO HYUNDAI SERVICES FOR A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE. HYUNDAI INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL, WHICH I NOW KNOW TO BE SERVICE CAMPAIGN 953, AND THAT THEY NEEDED A SOFTWARE UPDATE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. ON MY DRIVE HOME AFTER THE SOFTWARE UPDATE WAS SUPPOSEDLY CORRECTED, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTED FLASHING AND MY CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE, WAS JERKING, AND WAS STOPPING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THIS OCCURRED IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA ON A CITY STREET. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED AND BROUGHT THE CAR BACK IN. FIVE DAYS LATER ON 5/20/19, I EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE. ON OR ABOUT 7/26/19, MY POWER STEERING BEGAN MALFUNCTIONING AND MY STEERING WHEEL WOULD LOCK IF I TURNED MY STEERING WHEEL AT ALL. THE ONLY WAY TO UNDO THIS WAS BY RESTARTING THE CAR, AND IT WOULD JUST HAPPEN AGAIN. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED ON CITY STREETS. I TOOK MY CAR INTO HYUNDAI SERVICES ON 7/26/19, AND IT TOOK THEM UNTIL 8/12/19 TO FINALLY RESOLVE THE ISSUE BY REPLACING THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN AND HOUSING. DURING THIS TIME PERIOD, HYUNDAI REPEATEDLY RETURNED THE CAR TO ME AND CLAIMED THE ISSUE WAS RESOLVED BUT THE ISSUE KEPT REOCCURRING. ON 12/28/19, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEGAN FLASHING AGAIN WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS EXPERIENCED 5/15/19 AND 5/20/19. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED AS SOON AS I EXITED THE INTERSTATE AND WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET. MY CAR WAS RETURNED TO ME ON 12/31/19.

AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS THE STEERING WHEEL STICKS AT THE CENTER POSITION. WHEN IT UNSTICKS THE VEHICLE WANDERS TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT SO YOU TEND TO WANDER BACK AND FORTH TO GO STRAIGHT.
Mileage: 13,000
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON A CITY STREET, I ATTEMPTED TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN AND EXPERIENCED GREAT DIFFICULTY IN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. I THEN STARTED A LEFT TURN AND EXPERIENCED THE SAME. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME. I FEEL THAT IT WOULD BE VERY DANGEROUS TO CONTINUE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED IMMEDIATELY!
STEERING LOCKS UP WHILE DRIVING. STEERING MAKES A CLUNKY NOISE AND VIBRATION WHEN TURNING TO THE LEFT. STEERING WARNING LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT COMES ON AND GOES OFF INTERMITTENTLY. TOOK IT TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE ISSUE.

POWER STEERING LOCKS UP OR STOPS, WHEN CAR IS MOVING OR WHEN PARKING, I HAVE TO SHUT THE CAR OFF TO RESTORE STEERING. THIS PROBLEM HAS NEARLY CAUSE 3 ACCIDENTS, THE HYUNDIA DEALER HAD THE CAR IN SHOP 2 TIMES AND SAID THEY CAN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM SO THE CAN'T FIX. I KNOW MANY OTHER OWNERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENED ON THE HWY'S AND IN TOWN DRIVING.

I HAVE TO PULL OVER WITH GREAT STRUGGLE AND TURN THE CAR OFF THEN RESTART IT TO BE ABLE TO GET POWER STEERING BACK. THE LIGHT FOR POWER STEERING ILLUMINATES ON THE DISPLAY PANEL AND THEN DISAPPEARS AFTER I RE-START IT. ALONG WITH THE TRACTION CONTROL AT TIMES, BUT OFTEN JUST THE POWER STEERING FAILS. BACKED OUT OF MY CARPORT AND THE STREERING WENT OUT. I WRESTLED HARD TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND COULD FINALLY STEER THE CAR BACK INTO MY CARPORT. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED. THE FIRST TIME THE DEALER COULD NOT REPEAT THE PROBLEM, SO I HAD TO KEEP DRIVING THE CAR. THE SECOND TIME THEY FIXED IT BY REMOVING BAD STEERING COLUMN, SHAFT, AND TOTQUE SENSOR AND INSTALLING THOSE NEW PARTS. PAPERWORK SAYS TORQUE SENSOR IS DEFECTIVE. IT HAD INTERNAL ELECTRICAL OPEN CIRCUIT. I WAS MOVING VERY SLOWLY, BACKING OUT OF CARPORT ONTO A STREET THAT DOES NOT HAVE ANY THROUGH TRAFFIC AND JUST RUNS IN FRONT OF OUR VILLA'S WHERE WE PULL INTO OUR CARPORTS. I HAVE READ ONLINE WHERE IT HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER PEOPLE AND THEY HAD TO KEEP DRIVING THE CAR AND THAT IS JUST TOO DANGEROUS, JUST BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT GET IT TO DO IT FOR THE DEALER.

CAR STARTED THIS AT APPROXIMATELY 10,000 MILES. IT "WANDERS" ON THE ROAD, AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE STEERING WHEEL FEELS LIKE IT "STICKS" AT SPEED IN THE CENTER POSITION AND IT TAKES CONSIDERABLE FORCE TO TURN THE WHEEL FROM CENTER. THIS CAUSES OVERCORRECTION IN THE STEERING AND YOU TEND TO GO BACK AND FORTH. SINGLE-HANDED CRUISING IS DEFINITELY OUT OF THE EQUATION, AS IT REQUIRES A TWO-HANDED TIGHT GRIP FOR EVEN TINY ADJUSTMENTS. MY WIFE HATES IT AND IT IS UPSETTING TO HAPPEN IN A NEW CAR. DID NOT DO THIS WHEN NEW AND DOES IT IN ALL MODES (NORMAL, ECO, SPORT).
Mileage: 12,000
AFTER DRIVING MY NEWLY PURCHASED 2017 HYUNDAI SONATA, FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME OR MILEAGE, THE POWER STEERING WILL MAKE A CLUNK SOUND AND THEN WILL STOP WORKING WHEN SLOWING DOWN AND REACHING A SPEED OF AROUND 10MPH AND THEN WHEN I REGAIN SPEED I AM STILL STRUGGLING TO TURN THE WHEEL BECAUSE I'VE LOST THE POWER STEERING. I DID DISCOVER THAT ONCE THE IGNITION IS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED THAT THE POWER STEERING WORKS AGAIN. HOWEVER, WHEN DRIVING ON A FREEWAY OR ROAD, PULLING OVER TO RESTART THE VEHICLE IS NOT ALWAYS AN OPTION AND WITH THE STEERING WHEEL SO HARD TO CONTROL, THE POTENTIAL FOR ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE IS LOWERED. AND WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS WILL MAKE DRIVING WITH THIS MANUAL STEERING SITUATION THAT MUCH MORE DANGEROUS. IT SEEMS THE HYUNDAI ELANTRA IS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE AND A RECALL HAS ALREADY BEEN ISSUED.

PURCHASED OUR 2017 SONATA SPORT IN DECEMBER OF 2016. IN JULY I HAD MY FIRST POWER STEERING ISSUE. WHILE DRIVING FOR NO APPARENT REASON I LOSE POWER STEERING AND CAN BARELY TURN THE WHEEL. I HAVE TO PULL OVER WITH GREAT STRUGGLE AND TURN THE CAR OFF THEN RESTART IT TO BE ABLE TO GET POWER STEERING BACK. ALSO HAD TO HAVE THE DISPLAY PANEL REPLACED BECAUSE ONLY ONE HALF WOULD ILLUMINATE. THE DISPLAY PANEL FAILED AFTER ONLY HAVING THE CAR 1 MONTH. TOOK OVER 3 MONTHS FOR THE PART TO COME IN SO THEY COULD FIX IT.

I PURCHASED BRAND NEW HYUNDAI SONATA 2017 SE. IT TOOK ME SEVERALS DAYS TO REALIZE THAT THE CAR IS WANDERING ON THE HIGHWAY, IT'S NOT ME. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP THE CAR DRIVING STRAIGHT. IT'S MORE APPARENT AT SPEEDS OVER 50MPH. AT 70MPH YOU MUST PAY 100% ATTENTION TO THE STEERING WHEEL AND CONTINUE TO WORK IT LIKE A MAD MAN; OTHERWISE YOU'LL END UP IN THE DITCH IN SECONDS. IT'S A HIGH SEVERITY SAFETY DEFECT THAT NEEDS IMMEDIATE, NATIONWIDE RECALL. IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING SONATA 2017', LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES AND BUY SOMETHING ELSE. DO NOT RISK YOUR LIFE AND LIFE OF YOUR FAMILY IN THIS PIECE OF KOREAN GARBAGE. YES, I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER ( GERALD HYUNDAI NORTH AURORA, ILLINOIS ). IN SHORT, I HAVE DEMONSTRATED THE ISSUE I'M HAVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE TECHNICIAN SAW IT AND FELT THE CAR PULLING, HE SAW THE CAR WANDER FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND HE SAW THAT I HAD TO CORRECT THE DIRECTION CAR IS DRIVING EVERY FEW SECONDS. LATER WE SWAPPED PLACES, HE DROVE THE CAR AND GAVE ME FEEDBACK " IT'S OK, THAT'S HOW SONATAS DRIVE. YOU EITHER LOVE IT OR HATE IT. TRY SPORT MODE, THE STEERING WHEEL IS STIFFER, I LIKE IT BETTER, THE CAR IS NOT PULLING THAT MUCH IN SPORT MODE" AFTER RETURNING TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, I'VE WAS ( AS EXPECTED ) TOLD THAT THE ISSUE CANNOT BE DUPLICATED AND CAR IS OPERATING AS IT WAS DESIGNED. ---- BASICALLY GTFO MR. CUSTOMER! ---- IF YOU ARE SMART, JUST DISMISS THE IDEA OF BUYING HYUNDAI SONATA 2017 SE MODEL ( NOT SURE ABOUT SPORT OR LIMITED ). OTHER THAN LIFE THREATING DEFECT WITH STEERING, I LOVE EVERYTHING ELSE IN THIS CAR. STILL, I'M TAKING A HUGE FINANCIAL HIT TO TRADE IT IN BEFORE I MAKE THE FIRST PAYMENT. I DON'T WANT TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT AND MY LIFE AND HEALTH IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN FEW GRAND. I DON'T WANT TO WASTE TIME TO KEEP PLAYING GAMES WITH DEALERSHIPS AND KEEP MYSELF STRESSED.
