I’ve experienced repeated electrical and mechanical issues with my 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid. These include full battery drainage without engine activation (leaving me stranded), multiple warning lights, and recently a heater failure that remains unresolved. I’ve had over 8 service visits in two years, and Hyundai has not responded to my formal letter. A detailed timeline is available if needed.

1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The hybrid powertrain system, transmission, or engine appears to be malfunctioning. The vehicle hesitates or stalls when pressing the gas, losing power as if it doesn’t recognize when to transition between EV and gas mode. Yes, the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The issue caused the vehicle to lose power unexpectedly, particularly while driving at highway speeds, which forced me to pull over multiple times for safety reasons. This happened on [XXX] before the [XXX] Tunnel, creating a hazardous situation in heavy traffic. If the vehicle stalled at the wrong moment—such as in an intersection or while merging—it could significantly increase the risk of a crash. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No. I have taken the vehicle to a Hyundai dealership, but no official errors or diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) have been detected. The dealership has not confirmed the issue unless I agree to high-cost diagnostics that may not guarantee a resolution. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? The vehicle has been looked at by a Hyundai dealership, but no official findings or resolutions have been provided. The issue persists, and no recall or technical service bulletin (TSB) has been mentioned to me as a possible cause. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lights, error messages, or dashboard alerts appeared before or during the power loss. The issue first started occurring at approximately 35,000–40,000 miles and has continued to around 50,000 miles. The first time I noticed the problem was during a long-distance drive from Los Angeles to CO INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5

Hyundai has a service bulletin for their 12V battery but isn’t notifying owners. Today my vehicle stopped working and lost all acceleration on a busy 3 lane street that is 55mph. I was able to limp it to a left turn lane where I had to research the issue and found many others had instances like mine. The battery stops working and subsequently stops the vehicle from accelerating and tells you to ‘stop safely’ with no warning or indication that you’re about to stop moving on a road.

Sep 17, 2024

The check hybrid system light came on just after I tried to accelerate from a complete stop and I had no acceleration. I had the accelerator pushed to the floor and I got no response and was not able to accelerate two different times within 5 minutes of one another. I was in traffic unable to accelerate. I took it to the dealer and they were unable to find anything wrong and told me to bring it back if it happened again.

On August 1st I was on the highway at 55 mph when my 2022 Hyundai Tucson decelerated to 20 mph and would not go faster. This occurred on the highway at 5:45 pm. This placed myself and others in danger as I was on the highway in the center lane at the time of the deceleration. After turning the car in, the dealership returned the car with no repairs but stating that I engaged a button that caused a limit to the car's speed. I didn't understand but took their word. I drove it from the dealership to the store and home. The very next morning while taking my grandson to school at 5:15 am the car decelerated from 45 to 20 mph with my grandson inside the car. This placed myself and a family member in danger along with cars around me. Each time I had to drive to the dealership in unsafe conditions. They stated that I was not engaging the brake enough to charge the battery. I do not know of ANY documentation stating the number of times the brake must be engaged per drive. I have never heard of such engineering that allows a car to only go 20 mph and create a hazard for the occupants unknowingly. The dealership has stated that refuse to fix the problem but I should engage the brakes more often when I drive. The car has spent several months in their care due to continued repairs over the time that I've had it and is currently their because of the engine light being on.

Aug 12, 2024

Engine failed to switch out of battery power and loses power on the highway. This has happened on two different days the first time I had 58,000 mile the second time after Hyundai said it had been repaired the car has 65,000 mile. Both times my car went from 60 mph to 30 mph quickly. The last time I was in a construction zone and unable to get off the road and was only driving at 10 mph on a very busy highway. The car has been at the Hyundai shop since June. No there were no warning lamps, or messages.

Jul 27, 2024

Car lunched from a traveling in traffic 50+ mph to 39 mph and then had to push the pedal to the floor to get it off the highway and on the side during 5 o'clock traffic. Said something about the hybrid battery and went dead. Dealer has had it for 11 days and still can't get it started. Apparently there are THREE batteries in relation to this hybrid and all 3 don't work and never seen this before. Since it's been at the dealer, hyundai has emailed me no less than 3 times that I need to check my lights because my battery is getting low all the while it has been completely dead and they don't even know it. Suffice to say, there was NO WARNING other than a couple of miles prior, my car lunched down to the 39 mph and I lunged on the gas and it picked back up again but it wouldn't do it a 2d time. They obviously still don't know about the vehicle being so dead 2 different tow trucks had to be called because even the tires were locked up. Just still receiving my messages I need to check my lights because my battery (NOT BATTERIES MULTIPLE) is low and it's not low, THEYRE ALL 3 DEAD. I was in a dangerous situation and always felt safe in a 2 yr old car with a full tank and hybrid battery backup and less than. 20k miles. IF EVER FIXED because service may have to send OUT OF STATE I will never buy a hyandai or hybrid again. The entire battery system broke down. Which killed the entire electrical system which now no one knows how to fix

Mar 15, 2024

While driving on busy highway the vehicle would not accelerate even with more gas applied. Gave warning to check hybrid system and pull to safety. Vehicle wouldn’t turn off after pulling over and in park with flashers on. Various warning lights all came on, gave message of battery discharge warning, check brakes, check ABS, check brakes then everything complete shut off including hazard lights. Wouldn’t start after that until jumped by tow driver. This is the second time this occurred, first time being within the first year after purchase.

The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while attempting to drive through a yellow light, the vehicle failed to accelerate upon the depression of the accelerator pedal without warning. The same failure occurred soon after while on a highway ramp. The contact attempted to merge onto the highway, but the vehicle failed to accelerate with the accelerator pedal depressed to the floorboard. The contact pulled off to the shoulder of the highway and restarted the vehicle; the vehicle resumed normal operation after the engine restart. The dealer was notified of the failure and an appointment was made to have the vehicle serviced. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 32,340.

Case Synopsis: My ownership includes three Hyundai Hybrid vehicles: two 2020 Sonata Hybrids and one 2022 Tucson Hybrid. Each car has consistently manifested engineering defects, predominantly overheating, within a year of purchase. These persistent malfunctions have led to the vehicles being inoperable and beyond repair. As a result, we have endured financial setbacks from negative equity, costs of repairs, reduced value of the cars, and considerable inconvenience and safety hazards due to these ongoing overheating issues.

1) Transmission: while driving car jerks. when I’m accelerating from a stop sign or stop light the wheels kind of feel like they’re spinning/shaking and driving over gravel when I accelerate, before it actually starts and shifts gears. Car accelerating but not moving. 2) Not safe. Almost hit other cars around and people. 3) Dealer confirmed and replacing with new transmission. 4) No warning signs

05/11/2023 Driving on Highway (Work Zone) Dash Flashed Hybrid System Failure - I was in the fast lane with Tractor trailer in front ,behind ,and alongside me - Gas pedal stopped working at that point nothing worked - managed to coast to the shoulder (could have been killed) Had it towed to Hyundai - They checked the computer and said nothing was wrong . that means if we were killed - Hyundai would be off the hook and they would say human error because they said no faults were stored and the codes were clear

I got this message on the car screen: check hybrid system!! Last Sunday I was driving when I lost all acceleration and this warning came up and told me to pull over safely

Aug 2, 2023

I have noticed this only happens on very cold days and it has Happened 7 times now. The car will be driving along and suddenly lose all power to the point you cannot accelerate above 15 MPH even if you floor the gas pedal. While this happens the Battery indicator will drop to 0 and then a Message Check Hybrid System pops up. Once the car comes to a complete stop the parking brake will automatically engage and will not release. If you shut the car off and turn it back on, A message please wait while battery charges is on the display and will not disengage the parking brake until the battery charges up to about 35-40% . The dealer has looked at the car 4 times and found nothing as no codes ever registered. I even opened a case direct with Hyundai Consumer affairs and they can not seem to find anything wrong with the car nor do they think it is an Issue. I find this to be extremely unsafe for a vehicle to randomly lose power and refuse to come out of park regardless of where on the road you happen to be when this occurs. It has not happened since the temperatures have been above freezing, but with winter a few months away. I completely fear for my safety.

An engine alert go off to Refill Inverter Coolant. However, Coolant was full. When temp Gets hot 93+ seems to trigger alert. There is a technical service bulletin Hyundia issued “22-HC-002H“ REFILL INVERTER COOLANT WARNING LIGHT ON. TSB says to flush system. About 100 people posted on this issue. Post mention two types of coolant used a pink in newer models and blue in older 2022 models. Some mentioned replacing coolant pump. Apparently known issue and not appropriately addressed by Hyundai and Kia also has this issue, same engine platforms in both.

My car broke down on the highway, found oil leaked out. Oil Plug fell off during drive making immediate oil loss which in result caused catastrophic engine failure. Vehicle needs new engine. The car received service maintenance in authorized Hyundai City of Bay Ridge Dealership. Car is less then one years old with only 4500 miles on it and oil plugs are not supposed to fall off the car without any apparent reason.

The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the hybrid alert warning light illuminated, and the vehicle then decelerated. The contact veered the vehicle off the road and turned the vehicle off and restarted the vehicle. The collision alert and check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed of an unknown issue with the power train however, the contact was informed that failure was corrected independently and that the check engine warning light needed to be reset. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided a case number. The failure mileage was approximately 4,000.

I bought a ‘22 Tucson Hybrid in Sept of ‘22. Upon delivery there were issues w paint & a dent on the rear qtr panel. The bigger issue however, is disconnect in communication between the EV motor, gas engine & transmission. All work is done @dealership and well maintained. History of EV over 8 months: @1000 miles noise under vehicle began. Dealership inspected, all checked out. The dealership has done all servicing as scheduled. From 1000 to 12,000 miles, the vehicle drove best if in sport mode. Sport mode utilizes the gas engine and not EV. When in EV modes, the vehicle runs high rpms or it’s sluggish. It’s never consistent. In some instances; the vehicle will actually stall for 2-3 seconds and kick back on. 1 instance was at a stop light, turning left. Mid turn, gas to the floor, the vehicle stalled for 3 seconds before responding. I was almost hit at 50 mph in the intersection as both motors failed me. The next day, 3 lights came on: An EV, check engine and Hybrid motor light came on, 3 total. My Hyundai app stated: issue communicating EV and Gas motor, EMS communication error. This cleared itself in 36 hrs but I couldn’t drive it safely for a week. I took it to the dealership, everything checked out. 3 days ago @ 17,400 miles, I received a text: Hyundai stated car unfit to drive. DTC code U062300, U111200, U02BB0:Powertrain EMS issue. The techs had it 2 days, fixed it. 3 blocks from dealer, check engine light came on again. I returned it to dealer. I’ve found 32 accounts of these codes resulting in a Hyundai buy-back, new engine, new transmission or settlements. I’m told my EV motor, gas engine and transmission won’t communicate even after software / firmware updates & mechanical changes. I don’t feel the vehicle to be roadworthy and I don’t feel safe driving it, if Hyundai has no fix. I’m told, many sales of this model @ my dealer have the same issues. Bad batch? I paid $47k (car & warr) I’m hoping for a buy back or to get into a Toyota hybrid of = value

Within only two weeks of purchase this new car would suddenly stall in the middle of the road. The computer tells you to pull over. We continued to try and get the dealer to fix this issue, they first ignored us, then they secondly tried and successfully replicated the issue. They said there is no way they can fix the issue. This dangerous stalling in the middle of the road happened numerous times. You will push the pedal all the way to the ground and it won’t go over 20mph. This is a very dangerous issue and these vehicles need to stop being sold. It is very dangerous. We have been left without our money back and without a car to drive for months. We cannot drive the Tucson as it is simply too dangerous and must be towed to go anywhere for salvage.

Went to get state inspection sticker and when there ask them to check the oil, because every time I checked the oil it showed over filled. The dealership checked it show over filled when they checked it and put it on rack to drain the oil and put some of that oil in a bottle. Told me would need to get approval from hyundai to fix the issue. Two days later hyundai refused to fix problem said there was water in the oil pan. Then accused me of driving the vehicle through high water to which I never have and told them so, but they refused to find out how water is getting into the oil pan. They said all the fluid levels are normal, so they don't know where or how its getting in the oil pan. I bought the car from the same dealership brand new and have had it 1 1/2 years and only have 2475 miles on the vehicle.

When driving my car at any speed it will suddenly begin to get sluggish then it becomes unresponsive to me giving it gas and starts to decelerate. When this happens suddenly warning signs on the vehicle go off stating to check the hybrid system and stop the vehicle. When this happens the car then stops functioning. I never know when it is gonna happen. I have been in the middle of heavy traffic and at high speeds stuck in the middle of the road. I have brought it in now four times to different dealerships and contacted corporate and No one can find a problem. I have pictures of the warning signs going off, all I am being told is we don’t find anything wrong when they run their test or try to reproduce the issue, so they can’t help me. This is a very serious and dangerous situation to be driving a car that has and will stall at any given time.

The vehicle is currently at the dealership. I purchased the 2022 hyundai Tucson hybrid limited in April. Have gotten my oil changes done religiously at the dealership. Vehicle is at 22k miles. And had oil change 5 days prior to incident. I was on the way to work and vehicle started to struggle to accelerate, engine began malfunctioning. Vehicle dropped drastically from 80mph Dow to 25-30 mph in short period of time, would have been rear ended if not in right lane already. No warning or previous problems. No warning or check engine lights EVER came on before the vehicle would not drive at all. And was told by the vehicle to “check hybrid system stop safely”. Called roadside and vehicle was towed to dealership. They diagnosed as “the timing chain was ‘missing’ one of the cylinders, causing a loss of power from the gasoline engine and the hybrid system attempted to compensate for lost power, resulting in engine failure” later that day when I arrived from work to get a loaner I was told that it was a broken camshaft and warranty would pay for a new engine.”

Jan 10, 2023

Driving the car acceleration will go to zero. You can floor it and it will only go to 20mph. The car asked you to pull over safely. They hybrid battery is at zero and warning signs keep flashing. Has happened over three times on a new car. Dealership can’t figure it out. When I look up “HEV warning Tucson hybrid” there are many with same issue. Very, very dangerous issue.

Jan 10, 2023

On three separate occasions the vehicle refused to accelerate after being in a stop and go mode (I.e. traffic/drive thru). All three times an alert popped up on the dashboard stating: HEV Check Hybrid System Stop Safely. The second time this occurred a diagnostic code came up: DTCP112000. In all three occasions turning the car off and restarting resolved the issue at least temporarily. Also- the battery was completely depleted after each incident. Vehicle is at the dealership service center for the second time without and current diagnosis or solution.

I am an active-duty service member who purchased a new 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid on 16 October 2021. The car occasionally makes a strange humming noise while the vehicle is completely turned off. I recorded my car making this strange noise, and the video recording can be seen at https://youtu.be/bY8GJenoWBQ. I had previously notified Hyundai Maintenance of this during a scheduled vehicle check; nothing was done to resolve this matter. The advertised fuel economy on this car is 36/37/37 (city/combined/highway) Miles per Gallon. I am currently getting 28 MPG (see attachment), which is approximately 30% below the advertised fuel economy. Since I purchased this vehicle, it has consistently delivered a poor fuel economy well below the advertised fuel economy. After trying to resolve the poor fuel economy issue with Hyundai for 9 months (see attachment), I reached out to the Better Business Bureau seeking a resolution. On 17 November 2022, I was notified by the Better Business Bureau that Hyundai rejected my proposed resolutions of Hyundai repairing the car under manufacturer warranty or replace it if unable to fix the poor fuel economy, as well as reimburse me for money spent due to excessive fuel consumption. Additionally, other persons have reported their Hyundai cars delivering a fuel economy much lower than advertised (visit https://www.reddit.com/r/Hyundai/comments/nwayqv/2022_tucson_hybrid_poor_gas_mileage/). I have the perception that Hyundai lied and deliberately deceived me. Something is wrong with my car, and Hyundai has been either incompetent or unwilling to repair the issue under the car manufacturer warranty. I believe that it's important to hold companies such as Hyundai accountable. Otherwise, it would have no incentive for doing what is right. I request your assistance with investigating, and if possible, taking actions to hold Hyundai accountable for deceiving consumers by exaggerating its car fuel economy.

The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power with the oil warning light illuminated. The contact attempted to accelerate; however, the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The contact pulled over to the side of the roadway and the vehicle was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that oil was not being pumped to the engine as needed which caused the engine to seize. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and suggested that a buy back for the vehicle. The failure mileage was 575.

I have a4000 mileage on hundai 2022 tuscon hybrid which I bought brand new on December 2021 and car suddenly won’t start three weeks ago. I have to tow the car to dealership . They called hundai engineers and they told them to remove inside harness which I have to wait for the part for week . After putting that car won’t start and they called again to Hundai engineers and they told them to put harness outside . I am waiting for the other part . This new car should not have this problem . They also not giving me any rental car .

My vehicle that I finance is a 2022 Hybrid Tucson it failed at 14,596 miles I had it since November 2021 so for a good 9 months until it decided to finally malfunction. As I been driving it previously for the past month I’ve been hearing the transmission struggle a lot more everyday that I use it. I also noticed that the engine really lacks power, when I accelerate it takes a really long time for the gears to shift which has been getting worse for the past month now. Which is what I believe led up to my vehicle losing complete engine power while I was driving 30mph. I saw on my digital cluster a message saying “Check Hybrid System, Stop the car safely.” In an orange triangle, I had cars backed up close to me and I was confused as to why this was happening to my not even a year old vehicle. This is a major safety issue to me that while I’m driving anywhere my engine will go completely off and I am only to rely on 20mph on EV Mode. If I was on the freeway I could’ve gotten into an accident and with my whole family in the car. I personally feel unsafe driving, it’s my daily driver and my only way to get to work.

Jun 28, 2022

Vehicle vehicle slowed down from 65mph to 35mph suddenly on freeway. This happened 4 times. 3 times engine light went away after vehicle was shut down and restarted. 4th time repair light came stayed on.

I have a 2022 Hyundai Blue Tucson Hybrid which I bought last year late July, early August, 2021. I have encountered a safety issue that occurred three times in a course of one month in April, 2022. When I am driving, I will get a message, "Check Hybrid System, Stop the car safely," in the middle of the freeway. The car will lose power prior to getting the message and trying to merge to the right on a freeway when everyone is driving fast is quiet the safety challenge. Once I pull over on the side of the freeway for few minutes, I can start the car again and keep going as if nothing happened. Each time it happened, it was unpredictable. My biggest discontentment, fear, and worry is when I took the car to the dealership (Tuttle Click in Irvine, California), they kept it there for almost a week and said that there is nothing they can do about it since they took it on a test drive and there was no problem. I even showed them the picture that I took of the error message but to no avail. They recommended calling Hyundai corporation and open a case, which I did but nothing has been done with Hyundai for now one month. They did ask me (Hyundai) what is that I seek because of this problem, and I told them either a buy back, or a replacement. They continue to drag me on and I do NOT feel safe driving my car. Here is my case number with Hyundai: [XXX] Thank you for your time, concern, and consideration in this urgent matter. It is greatly appreciated and I hope to hear from you soon so that I may get this urgent issue resolved. Sincerely, [XXX] Orange County, California [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

It appears the oil pan is leaking. Upon researching online, other 22 Tucsons with the 1.6L Turbo also have this issue. Unsure if they have reported the issue. I am losing about 10-20 drops/day and unable to get into a dealership until a month later due to no availability at any of my 10 local dealerships. I first began noticing the drops about late March/early April. I took delivery in September 2021 and at the time it started it was right after the first oil change...maybe 6000 miles? I smell oil in the car after getting off of the highway from driving 15 minutes. The smell lingers until car is stopped. There are no warning lamps on the dash and via the vehicles telematic/infomatics the oil level is still at 100%, however I have evidence of leakage as I have put oil soak pads under my car and every day there are drips. I'm hoping the car can hold out until I get to a dealership in mid June and not burst into flames. I called the dealership that had the soonest availability and mentioned I have a leaking oil pan and the advisor still said no available time slots. Didn't offer that I could bring the car in on an emergency basis. As depicted in the photos, I am unable to remove the undercover, but there is no damage that I ran over anything. The engine bay is free from any oil on top.

Traveling at 50 MPH when vehicle began to loose speed and would not accelerate when I stepped on the gas pedal. EPS warning light came on. Was able to pull off the road and turn off vehicle. Waited a few minutes and restarted vehicle which drove without problems. Took vehicle to the dealer who indicated the system was not showing any malfunction codes and they could not replicate the problem. Claimed to reset the system back to factory settings. Will also be notifying Hyundai via certified letter due to history of engine recalls.
