Car suddenly stalled on the interstate (sudden deceleration, could barely make it to the shoulder; engine and oil lights, loud knocking sound, burning smell); per Hyundai dealership, it is sudden engine rod failure. Hyundai recall 181 described this exact situation. If not for quick thinking and moving to the shoulder/shutting down the engine immediately, there was a high chance of either being hit by other vehicles or engine fire. I could have been killed or severely injured. Yes, problem was confirmed by Hyundai dealership. No warning prior to sudden deceleration. Engine and oil warning lamps did not appear until after sudden drop in speed, followed by burning smell.

My 2012 Tucson started dumping large amounts of oil. Would be ok not dumping then would start drastically using then stop again. Vehicle ran fine then it started doing this maybe 3 months into this approx a week ago it started making noises coming from the motor. It is doing as I was told the motors Hyunda has recalled already done yet it is not listed in that recall. From what I understand it is a fire hazard as well as a road safety hazard due to it possible stalling. I have has 2 mechanics tell me it's pertains to the recalled motors. To see if it's a issue I'm expected to pay the dealership to evaluate this issue which is unfair to me You can clearly hear and see the issue is there. Why is it I am having to miss work, delay bills, be without transportation for them to acknowledge this concern. Please tell me there is a alternate solution help anything?!

I was driving on the road way and the entire engine seized. I had to glide over to the side of the roadway and call AAA. I called Route 1 Hyundai, where the car was originally bought, 7324126502 brand new in 2012. and they told me no warranty on vehical. I had vehical towed to a mechanic in Hightstown, NJ and they told me to check that he just put in a new engine in the same car covered under a class action lawsuit for the same problem. I called the dealership service manager William, and they told me that they are not willing to do anything. I am the original owner and what happened was very dangerous and I could have lost my life! I usually drive on highway going 65mph. This could have been a catastrophe with no warning!!

On [XXX], Gas pedal failed to accelerate car while transitioning from [XXX\ on-ramp to the highway lane. Was able to steer car to shoulder before momentum dissipated. Warning lights for oil and motor were illuminated on dash. No power steering. Turned off motor. Restarted car eventually. Warning lights not illuminated. Gas pedal worked. Drove about 30 minutes to dealer. Hyundai did agree to replace motor and I paid a fraction of the cost ([XXX]). Since then, they have agreed to reimburse me for my cost. However, an oil leak was detected at the dealer two months ([XXX]) after receiving the car + rebuilt motor. Dealer has tried 4 more times to fix the VERY slow oil leak. Leak is still not fixed. Service dept now not returning my call (2/2/2023). Have called Hyundai customer care 800# and obtained a case number. Our [XXX] daughter was driving the vehicle from our home to work in Richmond Heights (approx. 19 miles) on [XXX] on {XXX]. At approximately [XXX] and before the [XXX] exit ([XXX] area), the vehicle made a load bang/popping noise, began to lose power, and the interior began to fill with smoke. She was driving in one of the center lanes and luckily made it over to the right shoulder without incident despite traffic and the smoke impairing her view and use of the rear and side mirrors. She immediately got out and called 911. Luckily there was no accident involved and she was not trapped in the vehicle. She was not injured, just very shaken. The vehicle was on fire under the hood and eventually burst into flames. The Kirkwood City Police Officer called the Kirkwood Fire Department and Terry's Towing. The fire was put out, but not before causing the vehicle to be totaled (see photos). Terry's Towing towed the vehicle to its lot, where it is currently stored. The vehicle is a total loss. As we purchased the vehicle from a family member earlier in 2023 as a spare car for our 16yo son and 20yo daughter (when she's home on break from college) for local and short drives, we only carried liability insurance on it with Progressive. We were not aware of Hyundai Recall 251 / NHTSA Recall # 23V651000 until after this happened to our daughter. We have filed a case with Hyundai. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by them or anyone else. The vehicle was running fine. The ABS light had come on sometime prior to this incident. The vehicle was going in for an oil change and system check after the holidays. In the process of obtaining the fire department report. The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, the vehicle made abnormal knocking sounds. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, and the contact was referred to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The contact received a notification for Hyundai Campaign Number: 966. Additionally, the contact received an unknown NHTSA Campaign Number however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle was eligible for repair. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Three months ago, I was driving my car when the engine shut down while I was driving on the highway. I was able to pull over safely, however, I could have been in a fatal accident as my engine could no longer accelerate while I was on the highway. My car has been sitting in the Hyundai dealership since September 9 when the incident occurred, with Hyundai stating it can take 6-8 months. This has since placed my financial situation at a personal difficulty as the dealership has not been able to even diagnose car yet as they’ve stated, many other cars have the same issue that are ahead of mine. I tried reaching out to Hyundai customer support to get a rental car, but they said they cannot provide one until a proper diagnosis has been met so I would have to pay out-of-pocket until then, which I don’t know for sure if the rental will for sure be covered in full, much less I cannot afford to pay out of pocket in the meantime anyhow. If Hyundai could send a certified diagnosis to the customer support, that would then allow them to fund a rental car while the dealership finishes repairing the engine.

Additionally, the contact stated that, the day before the failure, the vehicle was taken to the dealer and repaired under Manufacturer Recall Number: 993,999,966. While driving my vehicle I accidentally knocked it out of gear and into neutral when I did the car died I was able to pull off of the interstate onto the shoulder where it was scary there were cars passing me at 70 mph, with very little room the car will not start the engine will crank a half of a crank and then freeze up. It had to be towed home where it remains broken down. I don't know if it's the engine I don't know if it's electrical but it will not start the battery is fine the alternator is fine I reported it to Hyundai's consumer hotline and was told to take it to a dealer and have it looked at but the car is not drivable I cannot afford another tow bill to have it taken to a Hyundai mechanic

I was driving down the interstate, going approximately 70mph, and my 2012 Hyundai Tucson started having difficulty maintaining speed. The engine started revving up while the car was still slowing down. Suddenly, I felt a knock and smoke started bellowing out of the engine bay. I pulled over immediately, opened the hood to inspect, and was almost burnt by the flames. There was a fire near the back of the engine block which I was able to put out with some water. I had my vehicle towed to the Hyundai of West Allis in Wisconsin. The dealership and a corporate Hyundai inspector determined that the cause of the fire was a thrown engine rod. There were no signs of issues or engine lights prior to this event. My Tucson has been at the dealership for nearly two months. After tens of hours dealing with Hyundai customer service and the dealership, both entities decided that they will do nothing to remedy the situation. My Hyundai vehicle has the 2.4L Theta II engine which is clearly implicated in the recent class action lawsuit against Hyundai for faulty engines. There is a recall for the rod bearing which was the direct cause of my engine throwing a rod and causing the fire.

Driving home doing about 70 mph, i perchased this vehicle directly from a Hyundai Dealership, (112,445 at time of perchase) I had the vehicle for about a month and half, the vehicle did not give me any warnings until it randomly started to rev high while on the highway and very quickly after that I heard a clanking noise and my dash lights came on and my car filled with white smoke I had to pull over and there was oil all over the back of my car, the dealer never told me exactly was was wrong (after it was fixed) with it besides it happened near the engine block, there have been reports of this engine breaking (Hyundai Theta II 2.4L) due to faulty connecting rod bearing in the engine that may starve themselves of oil (there is actually a pending lawsuit for oil consumption) I believe this is what caused my engine to go. They gave me a different engine with 16,000 miles less (it has yet to break) At the dealership (where I bought it from)it took about a month and half to get it back it was “inspected” by my extended warranty and Hyundai mechanics, I was left without a loaner for two weeks and paid 106$ out of my pocket for a faulty engine, the dealership was kind enough to cover a big portion of it.

The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer and had a recall remedy completed. The contact stated that three days later while driving 70 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to accelerate as needed. The contact stated that the low oil pressure warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to park at a nearby parking lot and checked the oil level and saw that the level was low. The contact added one-fourth of a quart of oil and restarted the vehicle but heard an abnormal noise. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the engine to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000. The consumer stated the replacing the engine costs $12,000 and this is the 2nd vehicle destroyed with an oil incident. This has cost her 2 engines, oil change, and a engine switch.

2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON Bought it used, 1 prior owner ~50K, very clean. Since is VERY well maintained (incl. oil changes). Periodic engine light off & on for no reason. NO other probs, no oil leaks EVER. All recalls done. Dealership checked 11/2021 when doing recall, didn't document, it's "a short in wiring", "expensive to fix" & blamed "not tightening gas cap"?! THEN...On freeway with no warning light, a loud "bang" noise heard, vehicle began shaking. Initially felt like flat tire, barely able to control, lost power but able to steer off highway, engine died. VERY, VERY dangerous situation in heavy traffic. During tow to dealership, found # to national recall center who assigned a case number & was told "it's being escalated nationally..a corporate case worker (CW) will call in 3-5 days". Told "tell dealership to give loaner car". No loaners b/c LONG waiting list. Corporate requested multiple exams & photos from dealership in search of "engine sludge" (shift blame technique "poor maintenance") none was found. Engine pictures pristine (per dealership) "like a new engine". Corporate even requested 1st owner records!? Diagnosis:"catastrophic engine failure" due to bearing failure, estimate ~$7K+ for new engine. Corporate offer: 80% of engine replacement cost w/parts warranty (1 yr/12K), no loaner car unless delay due to backorder. Owner gets to counter offer or discuss w/ CW whose role (apparently)is to negotiate w/owner. 3 wks, never rec'd call from anyone. Hrs, days, wks spent chasing elusive CW. "Cust. Care" answers "hello, what's VIN & mileage?". Forced to repeat same story over & over, finally learned CW out on PTO, no one reassigned (someone slipped w/ "we are SOO busy here"). Finally reached CW. Call #1: nice guy. Call #2: lied, blamed dealership, mean, shaming, told to quit calling, wasting HIS time. Take it or leave it on 80/20 deal to replace w/another Theta II (aka we never fixed our prob) engine. NEVER BUY HYUNDAI! SOMEONE COULD'VE DIED.

My 2012 Tucson engine, with 62,000 miles, locked up on 09/22/21 while I was on a trip, without warning & no check engine light came on. Luckily, I was able to coast to the small shoulder. It suddenly seized on a stretch of I15 in the mountains of the Mohave Desert. The engine completely stopped so suddenly that I was lucky I was able to coast to the shoulder. The shoulder was very narrow, so I was barely off a very busy highway, at night. The breakdown happened just before midnight. I was stuck on the side of the road as cars and trucks were flying by us, with little room to avoid hitting us. It took 4 hours to find someone who would tow my car. I was towed to Midas shop at a cost of $800. The Midas shop confirmed that my engine had seized, was full of oil, and no explanation for the engine seizing could be found. The only option was to replace the engine. I wanted a new one, but they could not find one. They found a "used" one from a 2012 Tucson, supposedly with 40,000 miles on it. The mechanic had to go to Huntington Beach to pick it up. He was amazed at the cost of the engine (much higher than they had paid for any other used engine). Ultimately the replacement cost $12,118.41. When I picked up my car on 10/15/21 I headed home to San Diego (170 miles). After approx 100 miles, the transmission suddenly stopped shifting into any gear. It would not come out of neutral. I was in a lane close enough to the shoulder to coast just far enough to get a few inches off the highway. Because it was a Friday evening, there were no auto shops open. I had no choice but to have the car towed to my house (70 miles) at a cost of $500. A local transmission shop diagnosed my transmission problem. It was due to failure of the part that pumps fluid into the transmission. Yet another problem that shouldn’t occur in a car with only 61,000 miles on it. The cost of the repair was $4,200. The failure of those parts put me in 2 very dangerous situations and cost me $20,000.

Air conditioning system was just replaced for $2000. A week later, car to a dealership for a recall. Two and a half weeks later, while driving, engine lights came on, hard to accelerate, then rattling noise from engine. My son was on way back to college and on a rural road with not too much traffic. He pulled over and was not able to restart car. Had to be towed to nearest town (between home and his school, about 1 1/2 hours from each). The repair shop said total engine failure. They investigated and not able to find a rebuilt engine because engine has too many problems and a used engine would be $8000 to install and would likely have same defect. The car only has 96,000 miles. We bought used, from a Hyundai dealership, with a good CarFax report. It was a safety problem because he could have been devastating if he was on a busy highway. Unfortunately, it happened in a scarcely populated area and he was stranded while it was getting dark waiting for the tow truck. No warning lights until time of engine breakdown. Car had just been seen at a service station and car dealership just days before breakdown. We cannot take chance of investing that much money into a car that would have same problem. Had to have car sold for scrap.

The contact owns a 60 MPH, the contact heard a loud pop noise and from the outside of the vehicle and the vehicle began to lose motive power and smoke coming from the front of the hood. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and open the hood and saw fire coming from the engine. The contact back up and waited for police to come out to assist. The fire extinguished on its own. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it was later deemed a total loss. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. My vehicle has stalled (died) several times on me in the last several months. This happens when I am pulling into traffic or stopping at a light, etc. and is a serious problem because it could cause me to be hit. I took the car to my licensed mechanic and he said there was metal in the variable timing hub...he put the new part on it and then changed the oil and took it for a test drive. On return it was rechecked and found to be full of metal shavings again. He stated I would need new engine because mine was falling apart. He checked for recalls and found that this problem was a recall on the Santa Fe and the Sonata but not for my Tuscon...this does not make sense as these vehicles basically have the same or similar engines. Check engine light and oil light came on and stayed on. I was advised by my mechanic to contact you with this problem. I believe Tuscons should be added to the recall list before lives are lost. I believe my car should be repaired by the dealership..I would appreciate any help you can give me on this

I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY GOING ABOUT 70 MILES AND HOUR AND FOR NO REASON I LOST POWER , THE OIL LIGHT AND BATTERY LIGHT FLASHED BRIEFLY AND THANKFULLY I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD OFF THE HIGHWAY. IT TURNED OFF. I WAS ABLE TO GET IT STARTED AGIN AND BABY IT TO THE NEAREST GAS STATION LESS THAN A MILE DOWN THE ROAD. MY HUSBAND TOLD ME TO JUST BABY IT HOME AND HE WOULD TAKE A LOOK AT IT. IT STARTED MAKING A TICKING SOUND. I DID GET IT HOME AND MY HUSBAND SAID MY ENGINE WAS SHOT. NOW I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW THIS IS POSSIBLE FOR A CAR THAT WAS RUNNING JUST FINE AND THEN ALL THIS WERID STUFF HAPPENS. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. BROUGHT IT INTO THE DEALER AND AFTER TWO DAYS LOOKING AT IT, THEY SAID THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THEY SAID THE DAMAGE IS IN THE LOWER PART OF THE ENGINE. THEY SAID SINCE I AM THE SECOND OWNER, MANUFACTURER WARRANTY DOES NOT APPLY. $9000 TO REPLACE ENGINE. WHILE ACCELERATING ONTO THE HIGHWAY, A CLICKING OR CLACKING NOISE WAS HEARD FROM THE ENGINE, THE VEHICLE THEN SEEMED TO SUDDENLY LOOSE POWER THEN STALL. I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO COAST THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD AND INTO A PARKING LOT. WITH THE VEHICLE PARKED, FOUND OIL POURING FROM UNDER THE ENGINE AND ALSO SAW A LONG TRAIL OF OIL LEADING FROM THE HIGHWAY TO THE VEHICLE. ALSO FOUND METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL AND DEBRIS FROM THE BROKEN ENGINE BLOCK CAUGHT IN THE PLASTIC SHROUD UNDER THE ENGINE.

ON DEC. 2 I WAS DRIVING TO THE DEALERSHIP ON A CITY ROAD, AFTER ACCELERATING FROM A STOPLIGHT STOP, THE ENGINE BLEW. LUCKILY WE WERE ALL AT A LOW SPEED AS THE LIGHT HAD JUST GONE GREEN. DEALERSHIP SAYS IT THREW A ROD THROUGH BLOCK AND SENT ME A PICTURE. THIS CAR HAS THE THETA II ENGINE. MY MODEL AND YEAR HAVE NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN THE RECALLS NOR LAWSUITS FOR THE ISSUE THE ENGINE IS HAVING IN OTHER MODELS, BUT THIS ENGINE HAD ONLY 80K, HAS BEEN REGULARLY SERVICED, AND I CANT IMAGINE WHAT ELSE WOULD CAUSE SUCH A THING OTHER THAN A MANUFACTURING DEFECT LIKE THE ONE I AM READING ABOUT WITH THE DEBRIS.

I KNOW THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL RECALLS ON THE HYUNDAI ENGINES AND I CALLED THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE AND FLAT OUT TOLD ME THAT MY NGINE WAS OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY AND THEREFORE THEY COULD NOT HELP. I AM NOT READY TO HAVE TO GET A NEW VEHICLE, SPECIALLY IN THIS COVID SITUATION. I HAD A SIMILAR ISSUE WITH A 2003 TUSCON SANTA FE...THIS ENGINE FAILURE ISSUE IS A SCAM.

I RECEIVED THE RECALL OF MY 2012 HYUNDAI TUSCON. AS A PRECAUTION I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO ADDRESS THE RECALL 181 AND AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE I HAD WITH THE POWER WINDOWS. I VISITED THE DEALER TWO WEEKS APART AND SAT AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR MORE THAN 5 HOURS WITH THE SECOND VISIT BEING FOR 8 HOURS. I WAS TOLD SOMETHING WAS LEAKING IN STEERING AND THAT HAD TL BE FIXED. I LEFT WITH MY CAR AND APPROXIMATELY 8 DAYS LATER THERE WAS A CLICKING AND CLANKING AOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE, IVE NEVER HEARD THE SOUND, YET ON MY PAPERWORK IT STATED I COMPLAINED ABOUT THE SOUND, WHICH I NEVER DID. MY CAR STARTED TO STALL AND LOSE SPEED. I WAS OVER 100 MILES FROM HOME AND MY CAR WAS FAILING IN THE MOUNTAINS AT THAT. I CALLED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT MULTIPLE TIMES AND NEVER RECEIVED A CALL BACK. THANK GOD FOR MY INSURANCE TOWING THE CAR TO THE CLOSEST DEALERSHIP. A DAY AND HALF LATER I WAS TOLD THE ENGINE WAS GONE! I VISITED THE DEALERSHIP ON 07/31/20 & 08/14/20... THEY DOCUMENTED A RATTLING RATTLING SOUND IN THE FRONT IN... NEVER ADDRESSED ME ABOUT THIS 'SOUND' , DID A SO CALL INSPECTION OF THE CAR AND NEXT THING I AM TOLD IS I CANT DRIVE IT BECAUSE THE ENGINE COULD BLOW. NO RETURN FROM HYUNDAI SERVICE MANAGER, NO CLAIM FILED AND I AM STILL OUT OF STATE WITHOUT AN ANSWER. CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE SAT ONLINE 30 MINS WAITING FOR A REP BEFORE THEIR LINE DISCONNECTED AND THEM ANOTHER HOUR. I CHECKED ONLINE AND SAW THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. THEY LOOKED AT THE CAR AND SAID IT NEEDED A NEW ENGINE AND THAT THE DAMAGE WAS NOT RELATED TO THE RECALL. I AM NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND PURCHASED THE CAR USED FROM THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO WHEN IT HAD APPROX. 57K MILES ON IT. IT NOW HAS APPROX. 80K MILES ON IT. THE CAR IS WELL MAINTAINED. I CHANGE THE OIL REGULARLY. BEFORE THIS THERE WERE NO ISSUES. HYUNDAI AND THE DEALER TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY AND SAY THAT I AM RESPONSIBLE TO PAY FOR THE NEW ENGINE.

I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A NEARBY MECHANIC WHO SAID THE ENGINE HAD A HUGE HOLE IN IT. I ASKED IF IT COULD BE THAT THE FOLKS WHO CHANGED MY OIL MESSED SOMETHING UP, BUT HE SAID IT WAS UNLIKELY BECAUSE THERE WAS OIL IN THE ENGINE AND THAT IT WAS MORE LIKELY SOMETHING FAULTY IN THE MANUFACTURING OF THE CAR OR POTENTIALLY DUE TO THE RECALL SERVICE NOT BEING DONE PROPERLY. SO I DID SOME RESEARCH AND THERE ARE TONS OF OTHER 2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON OWNERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. I THEN SAW THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FOR SIMILAR ISSUES, HOWEVER THE 2012 MODELS WEREN'T INCLUDED IN THE LAWSUIT. THIS IS CLEARLY SOMETHING THAT HYUNDAI NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR AND INCLUDE THIS MODEL IN THE LAWSUIT, OR AT THE VERY EAST MAKE RIGHT AND FIX THESE ENGINES AT NO COST AND PAY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE AND EXPENSES INCURRED FOR RENTALS, TOWING, AND TIME AWAY FROM WORK.

DEALERSHIP PROCEEDED TO PULL OIL PAN AND VALVE COVER WITHOUT OUR CONSENT AND WITH NO COMMUNICATION FOR DAYS. CONFIRMED THE ENGINE WAS BAD, METAL SHAVINGS IN OIL PAN, ROD BEARINGS FAILED. COMMON PROBLEM. WAITING ON HYUNDAI FOR APPROVAL. SERVICE ADVISOR QUIT, WE WERE INFORMED 6 DAYS LATER THAT HYUNDAI IS ONLY WILLING TO COVER 65% OF COST AND WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY 35% ($3,500.0) OUT OF POCKET. WE REFUSED TO PAY; THEY STATED WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY DIAGNOSIS, BUT THEY ENDED UP WAIVING THAT. TECHNICIANS DID NOT FULLY SECURE OIL PAN OR VALVE COVER. OIL UNDER CAR WHERE IT WAS PARKED, HAVE PHOTOS AND VIDEOS TO BACK THIS CLAIM UP. HAVE RENTAL CAR AND MANY TOW BILLS IN TO THE MIX NOW. WHY WOULD THE DEALER TELL US HYUNDAI FULLY COVER THIS BUT THEY DON'T? WE NEED THIS ISSUE FIXED. WE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO OUR MECHANIC BECAUSE THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE MECHANIC TESTED THE CAR AND HEARD A TAPPING NOISE WHEN STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR. THE MECHANIC NOTED THAT THERE WERE LARGE METAL SHARDS IN OIL PAN. THE SHARDS WERE NOT PRESENT IN THE OIL WHEN OIL WAS DRAINED OUT. THE METAL SHARDS WERE ONLY VISIBLE ONCE THE OIL PAN WAS REMOVED. THE MECHANIC COMPLETED ADDITIONAL INSPECTION TO ENSURE THERE WERE NO OTHER ISSUES. AFTER REMOVING THE OIL PUMP, HE FOUND ALL THE ROD BEARINGS HAD PLAY. THIS APPEARS TO BE A MANUFACTURE DEFECT. I SPOKE TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR AND HE TOLD ME THAT A NUMBER OF THEIR CUSTOMERS WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT THE 2012 HYUNDAI ENGINE WAS NOT ON RECALL. BASED ON RESEARCH, WE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH ALL 2.4 LITER ENGINES ON ALL PLATFORMS FOR KIA AND HYUNDAI. WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER AND WERE TOLD WE NEEDED TO PURCHASE A NEW REDESIGNED ENGINE. DURING THIS CONVERSATION, WE WERE NOTIFIED THE NEW ENGINE HAS ENGINE ROD BEARINGS THAT ARE MORE STURDY. HYUNDAI CURRENTLY HAS A RECALL FOR THE OIL PAN AND ALSO HAS RECALLS FOR ENGINES IN OTHER CAR MODELS BUT NOT THIS MODEL. A NEW ENGINE SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED FOR AN 7 YEAR OLD CAR WITH 80,000 MILES. AS A CAR PROFESSIONAL, I SUSPECT THIS IS DUE TO THE ISSUES WITH A DEFECTIVE ROD BEARINGS THAT WEAR PREMATURELY AND RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC ENGINE DAMAGE SO THE ENGINES SHOULD BE COVERED IN THE RECALL.

THEY ALSO STATED THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY CURRENT ENGINE NOR DO THEY KNOW WHY IT FAILED AND THEY ALSO DON'T KNOW WHY MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NEVER CAME ON. NEXT MORNING I DROVE IT UP THE STREET TO MY MECHANIC THE CAR DID THE SAME THING BUT THIS TIME THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE OIL LIGHT WAS FLICKERING, AND AS I PULLED INTO THE MECHANIC SHOP THE CAR DIED WHILE I WAS IN MID TURN. HYUNDAI FINALLY CAME WITH A DIAGNOSTIC THAT IT WAS MY SPUN BEARING THAT WAS THE ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE, WHICH IS THE EXACT ISSUE AS THE TWO OTHER CARS THE SONATA AND SANTA FE FROM HYUNDAI WITH A RECALL. I HAVE REACHED OUT TO HYUNDAI MANUFACTURING TO INFORM THEM OF THE ISSUE, THEY TOLD ME THAT THE HYUNDAI DEALER WHO DID THE DIAGNOSTIC DOES NOT HAVE TO REPORT THESE FINDINGS IF THEY DO NOT WANT TO. HAD IT BEEN A MILE OR TWO DOWN THE ROAD THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IN A TUNNEL AND THE OUTCOME COULD HAVE BEEN DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT AS THERE IS NO SHOULDER. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY LOCAL GARAGE WHERE THEY TESTED VARIOUS THINGS INCLUDING STARTER, ALTERNATOR, BATTERY ETC AND DETERMINED THE ENGINE HAD SEIZED. ON SEPTEMBER 9, 2019 I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE ON THE CAR (NHTSA RECALL #: 19VX-063; HYUNDAI RECALL #: 181) FOR OIL LEAK THAT COULD LEAD TO ENGINE DAMAGE, STALLED ENGINE, RISK OR CRASH OR FIRE. I AM VERY UPSET THAT I AM JUST RECEIVING THIS RECALL NOW AND THE INCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED. I WAS ABLE TO TURN AROUND AND DRIVE THE VEHICLE @25MPH WITH HAZARD LIGHTS ON, BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT WAS NOW CLOSED. I FILLED OUT THE INFORMATION FOR THE AFTER HOURS DROP OFF AND LEFT THE CAR AT THE SERVICE GARAGE. I RECEIVED A CALL TODAY THAT I NEEDED A NEW MOTOR!!!!!! THERE WAS NO WARNING!! THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME ANY OF THESE THINGS HAPPENED WITH MY CAR. I CALLED MY HUSBAND, WHO WAS OUT OF TOWN. HE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO HIS BUSINESS AND THEN TOWED TO A REPAIR BUSINESS ONCE HE RETURNED. HIS MECHANIC LOOKED AT THE CAR AND TOLD MY HUSBAND THAT THE CAR HAD A THROWN ROD. HE SAVED OIL WHICH HE SAID HAS SHAVINGS IN IT. HE ALSO TOLD HIM THAT HYUNDAI TUCSON'S, SANTA FE, AND SONATA HAVE HAD THESE PROBLEMS. MY HUSBAND WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED. THE MANAGER SAID THIS MODEL HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED. HOWEVER, WE RECEIVED A CARD FROM HYUNDAI ON APPROXIMATELY JUNE 12-14, 2019 STATING THAT OUR VEHICLE WAS UNDER A RECALL AND THAT WE WOULD BE CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED REGULARLY WITH OIL CHANGES, ETC. WHICH ARE DOCUMENTED. THE VEHICLE HAS 150,229 MILES. IN LIGHT OF THE MECHANIC TELLING US ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, WE FILL THAT HYUNDAI SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. THE MECHANIC INDICATED THAT HYUNDAI RECALLED THE SANTA FE AND SONATA WITH THE EXACT SAME MOTOR, BUT DID NOT RECALL THE TUCSON. HE ALSO INDICATED THAT 30,000 TUCSON'S WERE RECALLED FOR THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS OURS IN CANADA. HOW CAN THIS BE THERE AND NOT IN THE UNITED STATES? THIS WAS VERY DANGEROUS. I AM RELIEVED THAT I WAS ABLE TO GET OFF THE ROAD WITHOUT BEING REAR ENDED. PLEASE LET US KNOW WHAT CAN BE DONE BY HYUNDAI. I THEN HAD TO HAVE MY VEHICLE TOWED TO MY HOME AFTER THEM TRYING TO CHARGE ME A DIAGNOSTIC FEE WHICH THEY ENDED UP WAIVING. THIS PUT MY SON'S LONG-TIME FRIEND AND ROOM MATE AT RISK! EVERY SERVICE AND TOW STATION WITHIN 60 MILES OF HARRISONBURG WERE BUSY OR CLOSED. THIS SUDDEN STALL ISSUE WAS KNOWN ON 2/5/2019 AND WITH YOUR SYSTEMS KNOWING THE CURRENT OWNER, ADDRESS, AND MY VEHICLE #, THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR NOT ALERTING ME! I HAVE INCURRED ADDITIONAL TOWING FEES BECAUSE I HAD MY SON'S FRIEND TOWED TO THE CLOSEST RESIDENTIAL AREA OFF THE HIGHWAY WHERE THERE WAS A LOCAL SERVICE STATION. COME TO FIND OUT AFTER THEY DID A ONCE OVER THE CAR, THAT THERE WERE METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL AND THE TECH HAD TO HAND-CRANK THE ENGINE TO GET IT STARTED. IN OTHER WORDS, IT MET ALL THE CRITERIA FOR THIS ISSUE KNOWN BY HYUNDAI. I HAVE HAD MY VEHICLE REGULARLY SERVICED AT THE HYUNDAI DEALER SERVICE TWICE IN DECEMBER 2018, NOVEMBER 2018, AND MANY OTHER TIMES BEFORE THIS. NOTHING WAS EVER MENTIONED TO ME ABOUT THIS DEFICIENCY. I HAVE CALLED AND SENT EMAIL AND LETTERS ASKING HYUNDAI TO REPAIR THIS KNOWN MANUFACTURER DEFECT. EVERY PLACE NEAR THE TOW ADDRESS WAS CLOSED. DUELL'S EVANSVILLE HYUNDAI (4400 E DIVISION ST, EVANSVILLE, IN 47715, 812-473-4400) ADVISED THE CONTACT TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THEIR FACILITY. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS 9,000 MILES OVER THE EXTENDED 100,000 MILE WARRANTY LIMIT AND REQUESTED THE MAINTENANCE HISTORY OF THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER CALLED BACK TO CONFIRM THAT THE SERVICE HISTORY WAS EXCELLENT AND PROMISED A NEW ENGINE REPLACEMENT. AFTER SOME DIFFICULTY RECEIVING AN ENGINE, THE DEALER FINALLY GOT THE ENGINE IN MARCH OF 2019 AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE SINCE DECEMBER 5, 2019. AFTER THE ENGINE ARRIVED, THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS AN INTERNAL LEAK THAT DELAYED THE PROCESS. ALSO, WHILE TESTING THE ENGINE, THE VEHICLE STALLED. AFTER ANOTHER FEW WEEKS, THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE VALVES THAT CAUSED THE STALL. THE CONTACT CALLED AN ATTORNEY WHILE WAITING FOR THE REPAIR. THE DEALER THEN CALLED BACK AND STATED THAT THEY WERE SENT THE WRONG VALVES. I WAS DRIVING HOME IN MY 2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON WHEN OUT OF NOWHERE MY CAR STARTED TO MAKE AN ALMOST BOILING SOUND AND BEGAN TO STALL AND SMELL OF SMOKE. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT I COULDN'T DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE IT WAS A FIRE RISK. HE SAID THAT IT LOOKS LIKE OIL IS LEAKING ONTO MY ENGINE SOMEHOW BUT HE COULDN'T TELL HOW. IT WAS LEAKING INTO MY ENGINE AND YOU CAN SEE IT LEAKING EVERYWHERE, SOME EVEN SPILLED OUT ONTO MY TIRE. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. APPARENTLY THERE WAS A RECALL ON MY CAR AND I DIDN'T RECEIVE ANY NOTICE OF ANY ISSUES UNTIL THE DAY AFTER IT ALMOST CAUGHT ON FIRE AND I HAD IT TOWED. THE VEHICLE DEVELOPED A RATTLING NOISE FROM THE LOWER HALF OF THE ENGINE WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY WITH MY FAMILY. I MANAGED TO GET HOME AND THEN QUICKLY TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC; WHO INFORMED ME IT SOUNDED LIKE A SPUN BEARING. HE STATED HE WOULD NOT KNOW FOR SURE UNTIL HE TOOK APART THE MOTOR. THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT I TAKE IT TO THE DEALER SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE BRAND NEW. I CALLED MY TWO LOCAL DEALERS WHO INFORMED ME THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND ALSO NOT PART OF THE THETA II ENGINE RECALL CAMPAIGN. SINCE THE CAR WAS NOT BUILT IN THE ALABAMA PLANT; IT ALSO DID NOT QUALIFY FOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY GIVEN TO VEHICLES BUILT HERE WITH THAT ENGINE. I WAS QUOTED AN ESTIMATED $10,000 BY THE DEALER IN REGARDS TO PUTTING IN A REMANUFACTURED ENGINE ON THE VEHICLE. AFTER RECEIVING THESE RESPONSES I NOTIFIED HYUNDAI'S WARRANTY DISPUTE RESOLUTION. THEY TOO INFORMED ME THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THEY INFORMED THEY NEEDED TO TAKE APART THE ENGINE TO SEE WHAT THE ISSUE WAS. HOWEVER, THE GAMBLE WAS THAT I WOULD MOST LIKELY HAVE TO PAY FOR THE LABOR OF THIS. I WAS WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION AND GAVE UP RESOLVING THIS THROUGH HYUNDAI. MY MECHANIC WAS ABLE TO FIND ME A USED ENGINE WITH LOW MILES (70K) TO PUT IN MY VEHICLE. THE TOTAL COST FOR THE ENGINE WAS SHY OF $5,000 WHICH WASN'T TOO FAR FROM WHAT THE CAR IS WORTH NOW.

THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON READING A CODE P0014, EXHAUST (B) CAMSHAFT POSITION TIMING OVER-ADVANCED (BANK 1). THE CAR WAS NOT DRIVEN UNTIL JANUARY 28 WHEN TAKEN TO CAR CARE CLINIC IN BAKERSFIELD, CA. WHEN WE COULD AFFORD TO TAKE IT IN. THE MECHANIC CHECKED THE SOLENOIDS, WHICH WERE BOTH GOOD. ONE WAS REMOVED, WHICH REVEALED METAL SHAVINGS CLOGGING THE SOLENOID. THE MILEAGE IS 67,444. I WAS DRIVING ON THE I5 WHEN THE ENGINE FIRST STARTED MAKING THE NOISE. THE NEXT DAY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND ACCELERATION WAS AFFECTED WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET.

IT WAS A SEVERELY DANGEROUS SITUATION AS I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET COMPLETELY OFF OF THE FREEWAY ONTO THE SHOULDER BEFORE MY VEHICLE STOPPED MOVING. WSDOT AND WASHINGTON STATE PATROL ASSISTED GETTING ME OFF OF THE FREEWAY TO A SAFE LOCATION. I HAD IT TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. THEY DIAGNOSED CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE AND THAT THE CAR NEEDS A NEW ENGINE. IT IS A 2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON WITH A 2.4L ENGINE. ADDITIONALLY, AT 75,000 THE TRANSMISSION FAILED IN THIS VEHICLE, AND WAS REPLACED AT THAT TIME. THIS WAS COVERED BY MY EXTENDED WARRANTY AT THE TIME.

MY MECHANIC IS SAYING THAT THERE IS NO COMING BACK FROM THIS, THE ENGINE WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. OIL CHANGES ARE DONE ON TIME, THERE IS OIL IN THE CAR NOW BUT A ROD IS KNOCKING LOUDLY. ENGINE FAILED IN OCT.2018 IN BIG BEAR, CALIFORNIA. AFTER DRIVING FOR SEVERAL HOURS UP THE MOUNTAIN, A LOUD RATTLING SOUND OCCURRED DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS IN THE CITY. INDEPENDENT LOCAL MECHANIC DETERMINED IT WAS THE PISTONS NOT WORKING PROPERLY CAUSING COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE. MECHANIC CONFIRMED THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE DRIVEN MUCH FURTHER, IT WOULD NOT HAVE MADE IT DOWN THE MOUNTAIN, AND I WAS LUCKY IT DIDN'T FAIL ON THE MOUNTAIN. SINCE ENGINE STILL UNDER WARRANTY, I HAD TO TOW IT DOWN THE MOUNTAIN TO NEAREST DEALERSHIP IN LOMA LINDA, CA. AT DEALERSHIP, DETERMINED AND CONFIRMED ENGINE FAILED AND UNDER WARRANTY. NO PARTS AVAILABLE (PERHAPS DUE TO OTHER MODEL RECALL?). GIVEN SMALLER DEALER LOANER VEHICLE - INSUFFICIENT FOR MY NEEDS. IT IS NOW JANUARY 2019 AND NO PART POTENTIALLY AVAILABLE UNTIL LATE FEBRUARY. HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CARE CENTER INDICATES THERE IS NO ONE ELSE OTHER THAN NON-RESPONSIVE CASE MANAGER THAT I CAN CONTACT. IF THERE ARE NO REPLACEMENT ENGINES AVAILABLE - THIS MUST BE A PART OF A LARGER PROBLEM. I WANT MY 2012 TUCSON REPAIRED OR REPLACED. NEXT DIAGNOSIS: IT WAS A BAD BATTERY, BATTERY WAS REPLACED BUT STILL NOT FIXED. NEXT DIAGNOSIS: BAD WIRING FROM BATTERY TO STARTER BUT STILL NOT FIXED. MORE INVESTIGATING BY AUTO SHOP AND REPORTED THAT TIMING CHAIN WAS PRESUMED BROKEN AND CAUSED ENGINE TO "LOCK UP". "ENGINE REBUILD" NOT RECOMMENDED, BUT 2.4L ENGINES ARE NO LONGER MANUFACTURED, THE ONLY OPTION IS TO GET A USED ONE. MY MILEAGE WAS 86,722 AT TIME OF INCIDENT.

I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN AUGUST, 2018 AS A USED UNIT. AFTER GOING ONLINE IT SEEMS AS IF THEY DIDN'T CLEAN THE OIL PASSAGES IN THE CRANK SHAFT WHEN THEY ASSEMBLED THE ENGINE. THE TUCSON SHOULD BE PART OF THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT PROGRAM. 2.0 & 2.4 ENGINES HAVE THIS ISSUE.

JULY 2018, TRIED TO PASS A CAR AT ABOUT 40 MPH (SPEED LIMIT ON THE ROAD WAS 50 MPH) AND MY TUCSON WOULDN'T ACCELERATE. AT THIS POINT I'M PLAYING CHICKEN WITH THE CAR I TRIED TO PASS, AND THERE'S ANOTHER CAR COMING TOWARDS ME. I FINALLY GO PAST THE CAR AND STARTED PULLING OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND ALL OF MY DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE ENGINE IS STILL WINDING AND MAKING NOISES. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND TRIED TO RESTART. IT SPUTTERED AT 1ST, BUT DID START. I WENT HOME, BUT AFTER THAT THE ENGINE WAS MAKING AWFUL WINDING, TICKING, AND CLANKING NOISES. I BROUGHT IT INTO THE DEALER THAT SERVICES MY VEHICLE AND AFTER BEING THERE FOR SEVERAL DAYS, THEY SAID IT WAS THE ENGINE ROD BEARING AND I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. LUCKILY I HAVE A THIRD PARTY WARRANTY THAT IS COVERING IT, BUT AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH I SEE THAT THIS IS A HUGE ISSUE FOR HYUNDAI TUCSON OWNERS AND THAT HYUNDAI HAD THIS SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR SONATAS.. APPARENTLY THE SONATAS HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS SAME ISSUE BUT NOT THE TUCSON. AS OF TODAY, MY CAR IS STILL AT THE DEALER AND HYUNDAI HAS PUSHED THE ETA OF MY MOTOR OUT TO NOVEMBER, BUT THIS IS THE 2ND DELAY AND I'M NOT SO SURE THAT IT WILL BE READY NEXT MONTH AFTER READING ALL OF THE STORIES OF OTHERS THAT HAVE HAD THEIR TUCSONS AT THE DEALERS SINCE APRIL AND MAY AND KEEP GETTING THEIR ETS'S FOR THEIR ENGINES PUSHED BACK.

IT SOUNDED LIKE THE ENGINE WAS CLUNKING SO I JUST STOPPED TRYING. AT THIS POINT THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IS SAYING THE TIMING CHAIN IS MESSED UP AND ENGINE FAILURE WHICH IS VERY VERY COMMON WITH THE TUCSON. HAD RIGHT ABOVE 67000 ON THE CAR.

I SEE THE SAME 2.4 LITER ENGINE IN OTHER KIA'S AND HYUNDAI'S ARE BEING REPLACED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. WHY NOT THE TUCSON, I KNOW THERE AREN'T AS MANY OF THEM AS THE SANTA FE'S AND SONATA'S. BUT IT IS THE SAME EXACT ENGINE WITH THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM. I WAS RUNNING QUAKER STATE FULL SYNTHETIC OIL WITH A MOBIL ONE FILTER...OIL WAS FULL WITH ABOUT 5700 MILES ON IT. I NEVER IN MY LIFE HAVE HAD AND ENGINE FAILURE AS I MAINTAIN MY VEHICLES WELL. I BOUGHT IT WITH 69,000 ON IT 10 MONTHS AGO AND STILL OWE $2500. I'M SURE I WILL NO LONGER BE A HYUNDAI CUSTOMER UNLESS SOMETHING GOOD COMES OUT OF THIS.....SURE IT WON'T! SHORTLY AFTER AS I WAS DRIVING TO WORK THE ENGINE STARTS TICKING AND LOSING POWER AND GETS WORSE THE FARTHER I DRIVE. I AND WAS 700 MILES PAST THE EXTENDED 100,000 BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY I PURCHASED WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW. THE DEALER'S MECHANIC SAID THE RODS FAILED WHICH CAUSED ENGINE FAILURE. THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM AS DESCRIBED IN THE HYUNDA AND KIA ENGINE RECALL, HOWEVER THE TUCSON MODEL IS NOT INCLUDED AS PART OF THE RECALL. WHILE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY MY HUSBAND AND I STARTED TO HEAR A LOUD CLANKING NOISE UNDER OUR HOOD. AFTER SPEAKING WITH HYUNDAI CORPORATE THEY TOLD US TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. WE DID AND A CASE WAS OPENED WITH HYUNDAI. IT WAS DIAGNOSED AT THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AS PREMATURE ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO NO FAULT OF OURS BUT THE WARRANTY DEPARTMENT DENIED OUR CLAIM BECAUSE WE ARE SECOND OWNERS. THE ENGINE IN OUR CAR HAS BEEN RECALLED IN OTHER MODELS BUT HYUNDAI IS TRYING TO HIDE THE FACT THAT IT EXTENDS TO THE TUCSON. IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO NOT RECALL AND INFORM ALL HYUNDAI OWNERS WITH THIS PARTICULAR ENGINE TO TAKE IT IN FOR REPAIR IMMEDIATELY! SUDDEN LOSS OF ACCELERATION/POWER WHILE DRIVING CAR STRAIGHT THROUGH A PARKING LOT. THANK GOODNESS I HADN'T MADE IT TO THE HIGHWAY! ALL DASH LIGHTS CAME ON AND CAR CAME TO ROLLING STOP. TURNED CAR OFF AND WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON THERE WAS A LOUD RATTLE IN THE ENGINE WHILE ACCELERATING. TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC RIGHT AWAY AND WAS ADVISED THE ENGINE WOULD NEED REPLACEMENT (THOUGH THEY DID NOT TAKE IT APART TO DETERMINE EXACT ISSUE). ISSUE SEEMS CONSISTENT WITH OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS MAKE/MODEL AND IN LINE WITH THE ISSUES FROM THE RECENT ENGINE RECALLS ON SANTE FE AND SONATA MODELS. CAR ONLY HAS 82K MILES AND IS NOW COMPLETE JUNK. HYUNDAI WON'T HELP.

JUST HAD CAR SERVICES AT HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TWO WEEKS AGO WITH OIL CHANGE AND RUST RECALL ALONG WITH MULTIPOINT INSPECTION. FRIDAY 6/10/2017 WAS DRIVING HOME TURNING LEFT IN A BUSY INTERSECTION AND HEAR A LOUD PING PING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, AND I CAN NO LONGER ACCELERATE. CARS ARE HOOKING BEHIND ME AS I TURN ON MY HAZARDS AND AM ABLE TO FINALLY COAST TO THE SIDE STREET AND TURN OFF THE CAR. I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED TWICE. TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALER. THEY BROKE DOWN THE ENGINE AND SAID THAT THEY ENGINE SEIZED UP AND THE BEARINGS HAD METAL SHAVING ALL OVER DOWN TO THE OIL PAN. THEY SAID THIS LOOKED TO BE CONSISTENT WITH WHAT THEY HAVE BEEN SEEING IN THE RECALLED 2.4 L ENGINES. THEY FILED A CLAIM WITH HYUNDAI SINCE I AM THE SECOND OWNER THE ARE DECLINING THE REPAIR REQUEST BECAUSE I AM THE SECOND OWNER AND HAVE 80,000 MILES. SO MUCH FOR HELPING YOUR CUSTOMER THAT WAS ALMOST KILLS BECAUSE OF ENGINE FAILURE

LAST WEEK, WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY IN RURAL NEVADA,IN A PASSING ZONE, ON A SHALLOW UPHILL CURVE, ATTEMPTED TO PASS A TRASH TRUCK,ACCELERATED TO ABOUT 65 MPH, AND JUST AS WE MORE OR LESS ABEAM THE TRUCK, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY QUIT. WHILE DRIVING ON THE I90 THROUGH SNOQUALMIE PASS IN WASHINGTON, MOVED TO OVERTAKE ANOTHER VEHICLE IN THE OVERTAKING LANE. AS I MOVED INTO THE LANE AND ACCELERATED, THE ENGINE DROPPED DOWN A GEAR AND A WHINING NOISE WAS HEARD. AT THIS POINT I HAD TOTAL LOSS OF POWER AND WAS TRAVELLING AT ~70MPH. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PULL OVER ONTO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE CAR WAS TOWED. THERE WAS MEDIUM TRAFFIC AT THE TIME HOWEVER I WAS ON A SLIGHT DOWNHILL SO DIDN'T RAPIDLY LOSE SPEED. HYUNDAI CARPROS IN RENTON REPORTED THAT THE PISTON HAD FAILED AND HAD PUNCTURED THE ENGINE CASING.

I PUSHED ON THE GAS TO ACCELERATE AND NOTHING HAPPENED EXCEPT THE RPMS SPIKED TO AROUND 5-6K AND THE ENGINE SOUNDED AS IF I WERE IN NEUTRAL AND REVVING IT UP AGGRESSIVELY. THIS HAS SUBSEQUENTLY HAPPENED DOZENS OF TIMES WHEN TRAVELING BETWEEN 30 AND 65 MPH. IT IS SCARY, ESPECIALLY WHEN I NEED TO ACCELERATE, SAY IN A PASSING SITUATION OR WHEN TRAVELING TO GET OUT OF THE WAY. I SHOULD START BY STATING THAT THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE SINCE I GOT IT LAST YEAR. AT RANDOM TIMES, WHILE DRIVING, MY VEHICLE WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO GO ABOVE 2500K RPMS, EVEN WITH THE GAS PEDAL FULLY DEPRESSED. THIS MAY HAPPEN WHILE I AM ON A SLOW ROAD OR, AS TODAY, WHEN I AM ON THE HIGHWAY. IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE I WILL NEED TO MERGE ONTO THE HIGHWAY OR SPEED UP FOR SOME OTHER REASON AND SUDDENLY I HAVE NO POWER. I WILL BE GOING 30MPH AND ENTERING A 70MPH ROADWAY. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THIS IS TO PULL OVER, TURN THE VEHICLE OFF, AND THEN TURN IT BACK ON.
