On March 2024, I had my veloster towed to a certified Hyundai service dealer because it suddenly began losing power, the oil light came on, the engine light flickered, and it began making a whining noise, and then the engine died and wouldn’t crank again. It took them weeks to diagnose it, and they told me the turbo was out in it, and quoted me an absurd amount to replace it. I had the turbo replaced, as well as some gaskets, the coils and spark plugs. It ran fine after that until June 2025 when the oil and check engine light came on and the engine died again while we were coming home from a vacation, 2 hours south of where we live in a tiny town that had no dealership or rental company within 100 miles. We found a small mechanic who said it needed a lower fuel pump. He put one in it and we got back on the road, but it still wasn’t running as well as it should. It don’t have quite as much power, but no dash lights came on. When I got home I took it to another local certified Hyundai service dealer, who said it needed new coils and spark plugs again, so they replaced them. Again it ran fine for a while until the day after thanksgiving this year, 11/25, when the oil light came on again at the end of my road. I took it to another local certified auto parts store who read the codes and found no suggested fix. No certified dealers were open that day, so I took it to Pep Boys where the engine light came on when I pulled in, and who said they thought it needed new timing solenoids, and put them in it. When they finished, they drove it and told me they felt like the turbo was going out and advised I take it to the dealer again. I had it towed to a certified Hyundai service dealer on Monday 12/01/25. They diagnosed it as needing a new turbo (again), a lower oil pan, and an oil switch. Quoted $3550. Over a week later today they told me that after putting it all in and tiring it on that the oil light came back on. They have now diagnosed it as needing an oil pump.
While driving my 2016 Hyundai Veloster (VIN: [XXX] ) on the highway, the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration. I went from 60 mph down to 20 mph with no throttle response, and the car only continued moving briefly from momentum. I was forced to stop in unsafe highway conditions and had the vehicle towed home. Prior to this complete failure, the car had recurring transmission/drive issues: it would start, but when placed in reverse it moved backward, and when shifted into drive it still only moved backward. Despite repeated repair attempts, the problems persisted. A certified mechanic later inspected the vehicle and confirmed severe internal engine damage, including metallic noises, blue smoke, oil leakage from worn piston rings, and complete compression loss. The mechanic concluded the vehicle requires deep engine repair or replacement. These failures are consistent with widespread reports of Hyundai Veloster engine defects, which pose serious safety risks to drivers. My vehicle is now inoperable despite responsible maintenance and repeated attempts to fix the issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
My vehicle has been burning through oil for 2 years now. It started with me having to get oil changes every 3 months, then 2, then 1, now I am forced to go get oil top offs every 2-3 weeks or the check oil light comes on and car drives very rough. I have been reaching out and opening cases with Hyundai and working with my local dealer for a year now and still nothing is being resolved. I need my engine replaced and they refuse, wanting me to jump through hoops and doing various tests only to tell me that even after I pay thousands for the tests, there’s no guarantee they can replace the engine. This is a known issue when you search online and thousands of people’s Hyundais are being affected. This vehicle is less than 10 years old it should not be having these issues. Hyundai is at fault for creating faulty vehicles and they are refusing to do anything about it.
I am going to answer each point one by one for clarity. 1.) Mass oil consumption from bad piston rings, and yes it is available. 2.) I was driving after work one night and my oil pressure light was blinking red. Needed to immedelty pull to the side and have someone get me oil to top off. This was when I first found out about this issue. 3.) Yes as it is a constant problem and I've had two different mechanics look and confirm that my engine is essentially toast. 4.) No, not yet as I am not willing to pay an absurd amount of money for a dealer inspection unless they truely mean well with it. 5.) Other than the red oil pressure light I mentioned eariler, no. This was Augest 12th. Bought the car from the dealer April 18th.
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that after completing a routine oil change, the contact discovered that while starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V746000 (Engine). The contact had an independent mechanic inspect the vehicle, who determined that the failure was related to the engine. The local dealer was contacted, and it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. There was corrosion around the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and requested the maintenance records, but declined to assist due to maintenance neglect. The contact stated that the maintenance records were not accessible due to not being the original owner. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal sound coming from the engine compartment, and the vehicle failed to exceed 40 MPH, prompting the contact to discontinue driving the vehicle. The check engine and low oil pressure warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the connecting rod bearings failure had resulted in the engine damage. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V746000(Engine), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 99,000.

While driving home one late night, the engine completely locked up while driving causing the vehicle to come to a halt and left me stranded in the road. Got it off the road and eventually towed home where it was later inspected and found the engine bone dry of oil. There were no signs or indications there were any issues with oil leaking, etc. After much research, it's a commonly known issue with other Hyundai makes and models and even some of the same as mine in other years. This engine only has 100,000 miles on it. It just barely broke that mark before completely leaving me stranded. It's still an unresolved issue as no one wants to repair my car.
The reason I am submitting this form is because my 2016 Veloster Turbo has an open recall out for premature wear in the bottom end (bearings and rods) and my car has been experiencing the same problems. I have had the highest rated shop in my area to look at the wear directly and it is clear this is the problem with the engine. Despite this all attempts to contact dealers and the manufacture have resulted in those parties claiming my unit was not affected during the recall and therefore there is nothing they can do to help me. It is clear my engine is experiencing the exact problems detailed in the recall and I have treated this engine as well I can as I had knowledge of these problems, even still my engine is only a couple hundred miles away from blowing up completely and not running. When this car was bought I added a catch can to specifically help with the premature wear on the engine as well as never revving the engine to over 5,0000 rpms. As well to both of the previously mentioned conditions I have consistently changed the oil every 3,000 miles or before with the best oil and oil filter money can buy. Despite all of this and treating the car as well as I possibly could I still experienced significant terminal damage to my engine and I haven't even hit 99,000 miles yet. This whole experience has been awful and near impossible even for me someone who is very well equipped to handle car problems and I can't imagine how a regular family with basic car knowledge could ever navigate and handle this situation accordingly. All I am looking for is some type of help in any way to move forward my car is still running and driving but if I continue to drive it, it will most definitely blow up leaving me stranded. Thank you for your time.
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle hesitated to respond while depressing the accelerator pedal, failed to exceed 45 MPH and made an abnormal knocking sound. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who referred the contact to the dealer. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where a BCT (Bearing Clearance Test) was performed, and the knock sensors were replaced; however, the failure recurred immediately while leaving dealer's parking lot. The vehicle was taken to two other independent mechanics, where the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced due to damage to the engine rod bearings. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V746000(Engine); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was referred to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 79,700.

I am the second owner of a 2016 Hyundai Veloster Base, purchased used at approximately 19,976 miles. Since then, the vehicle has experienced multiple major powertrain-related failures. At 49,196 miles, the first catalytic converter failed and was replaced. Later, both the engine and second catalytic converter were replaced by Kearny Mesa Hyundai, a certified Hyundai dealership in San Diego, CA. When I brought the vehicle to Kearny Mesa Hyundai, there were no warning lights or active diagnostic trouble codes. However, the dealership’s service documentation stated that a P0420 code (catalyst system efficiency below threshold) was present — a code that was not active when I dropped off the vehicle, raising concerns about diagnostic accuracy or documentation. Now, at 61,982 miles, I brought the vehicle to Hyundai Ontario due to delayed shifting and hesitation when accelerating. The dealership diagnosed internal transmission failure and quoted approximately $5,000 for repairs. There were no warning lights or codes detected, meaning this diagnosis is based solely on driving symptoms. The failure of two catalytic converters, the engine, and now the transmission — all within approximately 42,000 miles of ownership — raises serious concerns about the long-term reliability of this vehicle and possible manufacturing defects. The transmission symptoms pose a serious safety risk, especially when merging or accelerating into traffic. I am requesting that this vehicle be investigated for potential systemic issues affecting its powertrain components.
About 2 years ago, my Veloster suddenly started using oil and began knocking. No check engine light or other indicators came on. I had it inspected by a mechanic who confirmed that there was a problem in the lower half of the motor and it would have to be replaced. I was aware that other Veloster owners had been experiencing the same issue. I found recall spawned by a class-action which extended the engine's warranty to 15 years and 150,000 miles, but the website said my Veloster was not covered by the recall. I called Hyundai and they also said that my Veloster was not covered by the recall. I was very frustrated. People I know that sell Hyundai vehicles remained hopeful that Hyundai would come around and recall my car too, but I do not think that is going to happen since it has been nearly 2 years now. I have a 2016 Hyundai Veloster R-Spec (which is a turbo model) and it has the same engine as other turbo models that were recalled. I am very frustrated that this issue is widely known and Hyundai seems to have gotten away with creating a vehicle that's longevity is subpar from any I have ever owned. It recently dawned on me to ask AI for help and it recommended I contact and you, the NHTSA, so at the very least it is documented and patterns can be seen where this problem continues to occur with vehicles that were not part of the recall. I was very particular and admit about the maintenance on my Veloster. There is no reason that this car should be scrapped after experiencing a detrimental engine failure less than 7 years and 125,000 miles from when it was purchased brand new. I still have the car, which has been sitting in my driveway since before I had it towed to the mechanic about the engine problems.
The car is sluggish and loses power when it is taking off. It is like it is in slow mode. The other issue is that it uses lots of oil. I even had the dealership to repair the valve cover gasket. It should not use oil at the rate.
The engine has a known issue with the port holes being too small to allow adequate oil flow, this has been addressed in the non turbo engines. Our veloster had the same malfunction engine failure in which hyundai is not covering and the dealership is doing a goodwill coverage of only 70% expense of engine only. When the engine throws a rod due to the malfunction it damages the turbo most times and they are requiring a full payment for that issue. Main focus is the engine when replaced has larger holes/ports and the engine can perform adequately. So as a consumer and owner we want to advise on this unbalance of coverage of the extended warranty. Especially since the turbo engine is identical just adding the turbo which it's performing at a higher rate.
The car stall when I'm driving
The component that failed is acceleration. He came from work at the Frywed when he reduced the speed from 65 to 30 and no longer accelerated .. if an independent service had no warning or failure at that time they were detected
Oil continuously drains beyond normal usage. Fuel consumption has also been consumed beyond normalcy. Taken major advantage of lack of knowledge on car maintenance by Hyundai dealership. No repair orders are issued as of late for any major changes to the vehicle. Last repair order(s) was completed 10/24/2023.
Shortly after finishing major repairs at my local dealer, I started to expirience, what I believe, now, to be a "low-end engine knock". Engine knock can usually occur due to oil starvation, where the connecting rod bearings are worn and debris enters the engine. So, I brought my car back to the dealer to ask them what this strange noise was I was hearing; I asked them if it could be the brand new clutch, or their equipment they left in the engine bay for me. They gave me an answer and it was to not drive the car anymore. One employee of the dealer even suggested "wrapping it around a telephone pole"... They told me what the repairs would cost and I had not qualified for a warranty extention so I left. I acquired a definitive diagnostic elsewhere and was shown the gravity of the situation. My oil filter had caught pieces of the engine and it was dubbed an engine knock. This incident took me completely by surprise. I regularly changed my oil and never saw my levels get so low that they would be considered empty. I have only owned the car for 5 years and it being only 8 years old, I was hoping to enjoy the driving expirience for years to come. That sensation has been replaced with apprehension and possible engine fire... how do I afford to buy a new car every 5 years if I can't drive the one I have now??
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving at an undisclosed speed. No warning light illuminated. The contact also noticed black smoke coming from the vehicle The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the rod bearings failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

On May 13, 2024 my car had it's motor replaced. This was done at no charge by Hyundai of Wesley Chapel (Not where I bought it). The motor was replaced because of a recall (Product Improvement Campaign 966/ Knock Sensor Detection System). On July 28, 2024 my car engine ( the new one they had given me 10 weeks earlier) overheated and broke down. We had the car towed back to Hyundai of Wesley Chapel. They were unable to determine the cause of the engine breaking down, other than that is was leaking coolant. Hyundai is asking me to pay for a diagnostic test, estimated at between $3,000 and $4,000 to determine the cause. We do not want to do that and don't believe we should be held responsible for this cost. We have not been provided with a loaner car. This is a big inconvenience that we need resolved.
As I was driving on the highway I started losing power and a warning of transmission over heating appeared on screen. I let the car sit and cool down and when I started it up again the same issue persisted, I had the car towed home. My vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My safety was put at risk since I was driving and highway speed and car just slowed down during rush hour traffic. The vehicle has not been expected at this time.
Rod knocking noise engine.
How do I get help with a complaint against Hyundai for non compliance . This is my 2nd engine fire!!
After noticing a significant shortage of oil, I took my 2016 HYUNDAI Veloster Turbo to get an oil change. There continued to be persistent low oil in my vehicle even after an oil change. I put things under my car to make sure there was no leak and the vehicle maintenance advisor informed me there is no external leak present when getting the oil change. I drove a week and my oil dipstick was already showing significantly low oil in the engine. After contacting Hyundai about this issue, they said I would need to go through the same process with them and they would not be held responsible for billing. This comes at a time where Technical Service Bulletin #23-EM-007H was recently released in December 2023 applying to 4-Cylinder Gasoline Engines. I’m concerned about the safety of myself and others due to the probability of a fire, however I have already paid out of pocket for maintenance that had diagnosed the issue.
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while driving from a complete stop and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle hesitated and responded slowly. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle decelerated independently. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where both catalytic converters were replaced, and the fuel lines were cleaned; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic, where the vehicle was test-driven, and the mechanic informed the contact that the failure could be related to the transmission. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

Knocking on engine. All service necessary for the vehicle has been up to date. Hyundai Dealer has said to wait for a recall. Rod bearing recall has happened and my vehicle was never recalled.
There is a recall for 2016 Velosters that is for the engine rods failing. The 2015 to 2016 Hyundai Veloster has been recalled for connecting-rod bearings in the engine that could wear out prematurely and damage the engine1. The 2016 Hyundai Veloster has had several engine-related issues, including excessive oil consumption, going into limp mode, hesitating at acceleration, knocking sound in the engine, poor acceleration, stalling, failure in the timing chain tensioner, rough idling, and oil leaks. Which is exactly what is happening to my car currently. Told me I was not eligible. But I'm not understanding why.
Cylinder one lost compression. My mechanic pulled the engine apart and found the valve broke, a piece of the valve broke off. Compression test was only at 30 lb. in cylinder one. cylinder two had 120 lb., cylinder three had 130 lb., cylinder 4 had 149 lb. This Car had oil changes done every 3k to 4k miles with full synthetic. Never raced and always driven properly. 121k miles and the engine was basically done. Having the entire engine rebuilt for 5k$ now. I was having to add about a quart of oil every 500 miles before the valve broke.
02/??/22 immediately after purchase, the vehicle’s alternator died and had to be replaced. 12/06/22 catalytic converter blew with no warning while driving. Car was towed to mechanic. 12/07/22 repairs were approved, costing $1,748.66. Shop informed us this repair was due to a recall (campaign 22-01-023H-2) From 12/22 through 07-23 I opened many cases with Hyundai, who closed cases without explanation. During this time I am required to refill vehicle’s oil every month to stop engine knocking and prevent break down. 06/23 I was finally able to set an appointment to start the first step of the recall. 07/10/23 I arrived for my appointment to start oil monitoring, but was told to reschedule and come back later. 07/19/23 I arrived for my rescheduled appointment. Dealer made me pay for oil that was used and instructed me to return in 1,000 miles. After 1,000 miles I returned and left my car at the dealer for a few days. When I returned Hyundai staff told me the recall was “only for the original owner.” I was also told the recall was “already fixed” and there was “nothing wrong” with the car. I self advocated, stating again that the oil was depleting rapidly and what I had gone through. Staff told me to “drive the car until it breaks down, then Hyundai will cover the costs of repair.” I mentioned how that is unsafe, but was sent away. 11/24/23 vehicle completely broke down out of state in a dark and unfamiliar area at nighttime. Vehicle was towed, requiring engine repairs. 11/27/23 I opened a case with Hyundai regarding these issues. A few weeks later I was told the case was closed since they “had to believe the dealer and not the client.” 02/05/24 alternator died, vehicle required a tow to the mechanic. 02/06/24 repairs were approved for almost $1,000. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle as it is unreliable, breaks down without warning lights- which only appear after break down, and the manufacturer refuses to take accountability for these issues.

On 11/21/2023, I took my vehicle to Musser's Automotive in Tipp City, Ohio & I was informed of an Internal Oil Consumption & recommendation for warranty coverage.
After previous complaint I filed, my engine continued to decline. Began burning a quart of oil approximately every 240 miles and has now almost completely lost power. It will not go above 25 miles per hour. I can not drive it anywhere except within two miles of my house where the speed limit is 25mph. EXCEEDINGLY DANGEROUS! It will die while driving and crank right back up but then die again. As contained in my previous complaint - Check engine light has been flashing since last December, Oil light comes on approximately every 240 miles. Other model years of this car have been recalled due to oil issues - but not this one. Yes the engine has been inspected and everyone agrees the engine is bad but Hyundai refuses to do anything about it due to the car not being included in the previous recall years. PLEASE inspect it. Anytime you want. It's not like I can drive it anywhere. I would drive it straight to a junk yard, but am still paying on it. You should know, if you don't already, that Hyundai is regularly giving owners of cars that have been included in the recall, the runaround on repairing anything. There are multiple facebook groups with literally THOUSANDS of people complaining about the same or similar issues with their Hyundai vehicles and nothing is being done. The MOST disreputable company I have ever dealt with - from the dealer all the way up to corporate. READ SOME OF THESE STORIES TO GET A TRUE UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROBLEM... Unknown Regular oil changes, cranked my car up one morning and it started knocking, I have been in a rental for 2 weeks now and paying out pocket as a single mother in grad school. The dealers excuse of not diagnosing the car sooner, is that their schedule is busy after arguing with the extended warranty company about my coverage. I booked their next soonest appointment to be told we'll see if we can get it looked at that day. I believe they're hiding the fact that my bricks falls under recall 198 and do not want to admit it.
My vehicle started making knocking noise in front end. Took it to my mechanic and he told me to take to dealership and see if there is a recall for my car. I've done so much research on vehicle for recall and it says that its the rod knocking which should be covered as the recall I found but Hyundai is giving me problems with it. Vehicle is a 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the engine started knocking. The contact stated that several days later the knocking sound became louder, and the vehicle became inoperable. The vehicle was towed back to the residence. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 109,852.

The engine is stalling. Check engine light is flashing. Car is in limp mode. Dealership say it not a matter of it but when the engine blows up. Have seen where some of these cars blow up and catch on fire. Hyundai want help me or thousands of other people with this problem
Engine is consuming oil. Catalytic converter becomes restricted, and motor will stop running while driving. After restart motor will not have enough performance to exit traffic. Catalytic converter was replaced and now problem is recurring.
When my car 2016 Hyundai Veloster reached almost 95000 mileage the oil starts to dissipate much faster so started to do oil change much often. Recently and my care already at 97000 mileage. We are driving going up a hill and it started to make some noise kind of like a motorcycle noise and I know there is something wrong but no light warnings or anything. I was trying to push it to get to a safer side of the road because I have my 86 year old mother with me but the car did nor make it and heard something snap really loud and the car just stopped and saw a little bit of smoke. Had to stop immediately on the side of the road and it was a bad spot against the rail and that blocked the 2 doors on the right side. the car only have 3 doors so now my mother is stuck and had to figure out how to have her crawl out to get out the driver side of the vehicle. If the car was on fire that would have been really dangerous. Took it to the mechanic and my insurance inspector already saw the car and determined that there was some kind of rod that came off and that the engine is blown an that it is with a hole. it is beyond repair or if I do it will cost $5000-$6000. I bought it on 2018 with only 5000 miles on it. I kept up with yearly maintenance. I think it is insane that it will break that fast and we are traumatize with the danger. I am not ready financially for this.
Car started making a loud rattling sound. Took car to get diagnosed, issue was with the connecting rod bearings inside the engine. Asked about current NHSTA campaign id # 20V746000 but was denied because my engine is not part of the recall. My car recently had a maintenance check up at the dealer and was marked as fine, no issues. Engine light blinked once for about two seconds, no other warnings. I am very upset as this could have lead to serious issues and now I have to pay out of pocket to replace entire engine. Open campaign recall is for 2015-2016 Hyundai Veloster, my car is a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. Why is my engine not covered in recall?
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while his son was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power with the oil pressure warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who inspected the engine oil and noticed there were metal shavings inside the engine oil. The vehicle was later towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that there were metal shavings inside the engine and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V746000 (Engine); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.

Driving on highway at night coming around curve my car was still on which electrical was okay but my car started gliding like it was in neutral and could not accelerate. My car engine cuts off on highway. I'm luckily , a lot of cars were not on the highway at the time, letting me use my steering wheel to mauver to side of the highway. I tried turning the car off and turning back on would not crack but lights would come on. I had to get a car towed to my house. Appointments book until first week of May so been without a car sense April 11th. I was made aware of the 2016 Hyundai Recall on premature connecting bearing rods vehicle that could lead to crashes because Veloster's are shutting down on the highway like mines did. I'm sending my car to dealership on May 2, 2023, to Thorton Rd Hyundai dealership to perform the steps the dealership recommended me to do to see if my car qualifies to get extended warranty to fix my engine. All complaints read on 2016 HYUNDAI VELOSTER 3C FWD | NHTSA reads to me that my car was underling and part of the effect it's just that I'm more fortune than others that my engine lasted longer due to the care that I gave to my car. Late Spring 2021–notified of recall due to connecting rod/bearing issue. Hyundai dealer does engine inspection on 4/27/2021 & clears it. Also installed software update to monitor the problem. April 27, 2022–Car dies multiple times while driving on highway. Starts back up each time, but making clacking noise with Check engine & oil light on. Pulled over and had towed to mechanic. Couldn’t get diagnostic code, but told based on the incident, believe the issue related to recall & told to take it to dealer. Had car towed to Hyundai. Ran simple diagnostic. Got no codes. Manager drives & says some hesitation not unusual with Veloster. Did not stall. Recommends fuel additive. Early May 2022-Check engine light comes on & stays. Check at Autozone, Firestone, & dealer– told only catalytic converter code & car is drivable. Oil light starts flickering intermittently about every two weeks. Start scheduling earlier oil changes. Continues to flicker. Start adding oil between changes. August/September 2022?–Receive Hyundai letter stating warranty extended on my engine due to connecting rod recall. Warranty now 15 years/150,000 miles. December 20, 2022–Check engine light starts flashing. December 27, 2022–Dealer says can’t look at for 4 months, take to Firestone. January 9, 2023–tech says excessive oil burnt at top of pistons & oil leaking into cylinders, due to internal seal failure. Recommend replacing engine, but not related to recall. Research finds recall due to faulty piston seals/oil leaks on 2019-2021 Velosters & plenty of complaints about oil seal problems & excessive oil burning problems with earlier Velosters as well. Car unsafe to drive on highway due to lagging acceleration & hesitation. 2/3/2023–call Hyundai America about safety concerns. 2/7/2023–Hyundai denies claim.
The engine overheated with no lights on the dash and the engine block cracked
While driving down the highway the engine began to knock loudly. When the engine stalled. The vehicle stalled while traveling on a congested highway at a speed of approximately 70MPH. The vehicle was pulled to the side of the road where I waited for a tow truck via AAA for 5 Hours. The vehicle was towed to an independent service center that diagnosed it with a worn rod bearing, which in turn is causing the knocking. The vehicle has been maintained and oil changed regularly. Vehicle is unusable in current state as it is at risk for complete engine failure and risk of fire. No warning lamps or messages were present at time of incident. Vehicle is available for inspection upon request.

I was driving my 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo when I started to hear a loud knocking sound coming from the engine. At this time I also noticed a decline in power and the check engine light came on. I made an appointment to bring the car to my local Hyundai dealership to have the car looked at. While en route to the dealership, the car suddenly made a loud bang and a profusion of smoke came out of the engine and engulfed the car, inside & out, making it impossible for not only me to see but also limited visibility for the person following me, which was extremely dangerous. I couldn't see or breathe and had to rapidly exit the car on the side of a busy road with no shoulder. The engine completely failed and the car was not drivable. I had the car towed to the Hyundai dealership where they told me the engine had seized and needed to be completely replaced. Although my VIN is not yet included in engine recall 20V746000, my car has the 1.6 liter GDI Gamma engine included in that recall. In addition, the exact chain of events that I experienced have been described by others whose cars are included in the recall which describes connecting rod bearings inside the engine wearing prematurely (creating a knocking sound and reduced engine power), causing engine damage. I am requesting an investigation into this incident as I feel that my car should be included in the recall. It was a very dangerous incident and I don't want others to needlessly experience this same problem, possibly with more harmful consequences.

Me and my who is currently pregnant was driving at a highway running 40mph when my car suddenly stalled. The engine died and my car is like on neutral. Thank god i was able to maneuver it to the sidelane and no one was injured. There were no warning lights whatsoever. I had to call a tow truck to bring it to my house. And since im very scared to use it again. And up to now the car is still not working, i wonder if its the engine or the alternator that caused the engine to die.
I took my car to a dealer called Lee Johns in Everett WA for 2 recalls, but they told me I had problems with my catalytic converter and they replaced it under warranty at no cost to me. After 2 days they gave me the car and it did not work more than 2 hours and the engine light started blinking and from one moment to another it reduced the speed to 20 miles per hour. I called the dealer and they told me to take them, but to this day they only replied that the car warranty would only cover 55% for the replacement of the damaged engine. They gave me the defective car after they changed the catalyst and I gave them a working car that now doesn't work and they only tell me that I have to pay 4000usd so that they can repair it and they haven't given me any report of the engine revision because It failed, after they changed the catalyst, only telling me that I should pay and then make a claim or sue the manufacturer. I delivered my car to them on June 27 and to date they have it in their possession, leaving me unable to move and me having to assume the costs of renting and paying friends to pass their cars to me. I hope they can see my case since they wrecked my car.

Recently, the contact stated that on two separate occasions, once while driving at 70 MPH, the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. The dealer was notified and provided a diagnostic fee for an inspection. The contact then took the vehicle to Hyundai of Yakima (3204 Fruitvale Blvd, Yakima, WA 98902) where they confirmed that the connecting rod bearing was defective which was linked to the recall. The manufacturer was notified by the dealer and the manufacturer denied the claim submitted to have the vehicle serviced under the prior recall. Cruising on freeway ~70 mph when car starts slowing due to lack of power- for unknown reason car went into "limp mode", with turbo boost pressure and power cut off, barely enough power to keep car at 60 mph in order to make it to freeway exit to pull off. This could have caused serious collision. Turned off car, let it sit 1 min, turned it back on, and problem seemed to go away. No Check Engine Light, no OBD2 codes. Limp mode sometimes occur during harsh shifts but releasing throttle and reengaging usually fixes it but this time needed to shut off the car. Has been reported to dealer but they can't reproduce consistently and no CEL/codes so they won't try to find a fix. But losing power for no apparent reason on freeway definitely dangerous situation.
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the recall repair of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V746000 (Engine) and the dealer-installed a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System; however, while driving 35 MPH, the vehicle began to stall. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. Then, the vehicle was taken to a transmission specialist who diagnosed that the transmission was in great condition; however, the engine was not communicating with the transmission. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who completed a transmission relearn; however, the vehicle was sluggish while accelerating from a complete stop. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who diagnosed that there were metal shavings in the engine oil, the engine was knocking loudly, and there was a significant amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust. The dealer reset the Knock Sensor Detection System software. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring and the vehicle would not exceed 45 MPH. The vehicle was taken to a second dealer - Hyundai of Yuma (1125 E 32nd St, Yuma, AZ 85365) who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The second dealer sent a diagnostic report to the manufacturer and requested a new engine; however, the manufacturer denied the request due to the vehicle having a salvage title. The contact stated that only the rear end of the vehicle was reconstructed as the vehicle was involved in a crash. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 58,900.

Engine has a very noticeable engine ticking just like every other 1.6 included in the Hyundai recall yet my engine isn’t included in the recall. How can my 2016 have the same issue yet not require a recall notice
Engine knocking loudly on cold start indicating possible rod bearing wear addressed on nhtsa safety recall number 20v746000. Car was taken to hyundai dealer for recall engine inspection and given clean bill of health and removed from recall listing. Vehicle was at the dealership for less than an hour which is not enough time to do the necessary inspection for rod bearing wear. Knock sensor software was updated, but knock sensors are designed to detect piston clatter or knock, known as preignition. Knock sensors do not and cannot detect engine noise from worn rod bearings. The inspection method obviously did not include any actual mechanical measurement for bearing runout to determine actual wear, but instead was based on what the tech could hear and his personal determination or that of his superior. I contend my car is still at risk for early engine failure as outlined in the safety recall and should be reinstated for a proper inspection.
While I was driving down the road I suddenly heard a rod knock coming from the engine. I immediately pulled over and turned the car off. I was fortunate that I am aware of this known problem and can recognize the symptoms. An oil warning like appeared after the sound of the rod knock and just before I turned the engine off. I was on a local highway at the time and knew that the rod knock would likely result in an engine fire if I did not turn it off immediately. I checked the oil on the car and found that it was suddenly very low, which came as a surprise because I had just checked the oil a couple days before. I have since read that a common symptom associated with the Hyundai engine problems is sudden excessive oil consumption. After contacting Hyundai and insisting that this is a known problem with the 2016 Veloster Turbo they inspected the engine and confirmed the rod bearing was worn and the rod was knocking. They refused to acknowledge that ANY 2016 Velosters had been recalled for engine problems and refused to discuss it further. Since my car was still under warranty, the most they would agree to was partially covering the repair under warranty because I had modified the air intake on the car. To exacerbate the scenario, it took over 3 months for the local dealership to complete the repairs which were completed in just a few hours.
My driveway has a slight incline to get out of and every morning when I start to leave the car will start to jerk- like it isn't gong into gear and i have to back off the gas pedal to stop it. It is hard to describe. But it definitely should not be making that sound. Yes I can take if for inspection. When I am at a stop light or just stopped and whenever I turn the car wants to hesitate and sometimes jerks me. Transmission issue here I believe. About got hit on several times because of the engine not performing when I press the gas. When I drive on the highway for 2-4 hrs, when I get off and stop the car is like it is still on the highway. Meaning when I push on the throttle it takes off. As far as I know, when I take my car to Hyundai for oil changes and maintenance work they haven't inspected my car. Ever since I purchased the car- it has never ran right. Something for sure is wrong with the motor- When I need the turbo to work- it kicks in around 40 mile an hr- not when I put on the gas. The car just runs terrible. There is also a horrible blind spot on both sides where the mirrors are. Horrible.
Has the issue with engine already involved in a recall but doesn't include this 2016 Veloster. We've never received a single recall or bulletin for this vehicle.

It is making a banging noise in the engine as if it was starting to throw a rod or bearings in the engine of this make of car. There is a recall but my VIN is not included but from what i have read on this recall sounds exactly the same as my car is doing and sounding now,

My vehicle’s check engine light is on, low oil pressure light is on, the engine is knocking, it’s overheating, stalling, and loss of power and acceleration. I have almost gotten hit by other vehicles multiple times because the vehicle has stalled or won’t accelerate. This has happened on the interstate and when pulling out into traffic. I have tried for days to an appointment at multiple Hyundai locations near me to get it fixed because it has all the symptoms that the recall says to look for. I called 5 dealerships and there are no appointments available. The earliest one is a week away. Customer care is no help at all. They basically told me to figure it out on my own. I am a single mother of 2 and now I have no transportation because of their faulty engine and they are doing nothing to help fix it. What if I get hit because my engine stalls and my kids are in the car with me? What if my engine catches fire because of this? I get shut down by every dealership and they won’t even offer a loaner or rental in place of driving the death trap they sold me until they can fix it. What can I do??
I took my 2016 Veloster in because my car was included in the rod bearing shavings possibly going back into engine and cause fire. I have since taken my car proven they didn’t pull the filters out or the oil pan to look for shavings as it’s should be check that way to ensure no findings of metal In oil. My car was in their service for over 28 hours without it being looked at. I called and somehow 15 minutes later the car is done and come get it and nothing is wrong ! I call BS my car is still a safety problem. I still have the bogging of the engine and times I press gas and car won’t move. My family owns a collision shop grew up around cars still am and there is no way you can plug a computer into the module and it show you metal shavings. Can only be done by removing filter cutting it open and pulling the oil pan. I asked to see it and the refused ! I am not happy with my car and how it cannot drive normal and it’s a serious safety concern. I want my engine replaced as the recall states or replace my entire car I’m filing a law suit against Hyundai and their lack Of concern or lying and not properly handling such a Serious recall. Till you pull my engine and prove to me there is zero unwanted metal in my engine I will continue to contact news shows the news papers and motor trend. I refuse to be treated like I’m an idiot when I had questions and asked them about the pan being pulled and filter removed they said we only need to connect it to the computer. That’s a lie you cannot get metal settlement from a computer !! I have now had 2 other mechanics look at it and they will testify my engine needs to be pulled out replaced and or get me into a safe car or the lawsuit will only cost Hyundai
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while driving at 40 mph, the oil pressure warning light illuminated. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and check the oil and noticed the oil was low. The driver placed oil in the vehicle to continue to drive to their residence. The contact then received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign number: 20V746000 (Engine) which took their vehicle to a local dealer to have the vehicle inspected due to the contact concerns that the failure on the vehicle was related to the recall. The dealer inspected the vehicle and stated the vehicle was fine but they did not place the Knock sensor detection system software on the vehicle as part of the recall repair remedy. After a few weeks, the contact was driving back to the residence when they heard a knocking noise coming from their vehicle, the vehicle lost motive power, and stalled in front of their residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 83,000.

I WAS ABLE TO NAVIGATE INTO THE NEAREST GAS STATION AND TURN THE CAR OFF. WHEN I TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR IT WOULD NOT TURN OVER. I CHECKED THE OIL JUST TO MAKE SURE BECAUSE OF THE SMELL AND THE OIL WAS DEPLETED. I PUT THREE LAYERS OF OIL INTO MY CAR SO I COULD GET IT STARTED ENOUGH TO GET IT TO THE EXPRESS OIL CHANGE NEARBY. I DROPPED MY CAR OFF THERE AND THEY PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WHERE THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE ENGINE HAD FAILED. I MADE A SERVICE APPOINTMENT WITH MY DEALER WHO FINALLY CONTACTED ME BACK TODAY SAYING THEY WOULD TAKE A LOOK AT THE CAR AND LET ME KNOW IF IT WAS PART OF THE RECALL. SO, ON THE WAY HOME FROM RUNNING ERRANDS I HIT THE GAS AND THE CAR MADE A BUNCH OF LOUD NOISES AND THEN STALLED. IT ALSO BEGAN LEAKING OIL. I REMOVED THE PANEL FROM UNDERNEATH TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED AND SAW A BUNCH OF ALUMINUM FRAGMENTS ALL OVER THE PANEL.

MY CAR HESITATED FROM A STOP SIGN, THEN LAUNCHED FORWARD CAUSING IT TO UNCONTROLLABLY JUMP FORWARD VERY FAST. WHEN I WENT TO HIT THE BRAKES THEY FAILED TO ACTIVE, AND HAD TO PULL THE E BRAKE. THE CAR HAS HAD A SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR THE TCM ON MY DCT TRANSMISSION BUT THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO NOT BE ABLE TO BE FIXED. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, AND COULD CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT OR DEATH.

TL* THE CONTACT 'S SON OWNED A 2016 HYUNDAI VELOSTER. THE CONTACT PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED ON 06/02/20. A MONTH LATER THE VEHICLE STALLED, WHILE THE CONTACT'S SON WAS DRIVING HOME. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER (MAUS NISSAN OF CRYSTAL RIVER 937 S SUNCOAST BLVD, HOMOSASSA, FL 34448 (352) 592-6287). THEY FOUND THREE CODES THAT HAD TO DO WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER, THE FUEL INJECTOR, AND THE COILS . THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED HOME AND THE CONTACT'S SON ATTEMPTED TO FIX THE VEHICLE ON HIS OWN. HE APPLIED A FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER CLEANER AND THE VEHICLE OPERATED WITH NO PROBLEMS. THE ISSUES OCCURRED AGAIN ON 09/03/20 WHEN THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SMOKE WHILE TRAVELLING AT 30 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER AND THE SON OPENED THE HOOD . SMOKE CAME OUT AND THEN FLAMES BURST FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS SOON ENGULFED AND THE ENTIRE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WAS BURNED DOWN. THE FLAMES WERE PUT OUT BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. A POLICE REPORT AND A FIRE REPORT WERE FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES THAT REQUIRED TRANSPORT BY AN AMBULANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND THE WRECKAGE WAS TOWED AWAY. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN CONTACTED YET. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.

VELOSTER HYUNDAI'S 7-SPEED DCT CONTAINS A DESIGN DEFECT IN THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM) THAT CAUSES, AMONG OTHER PROBLEMS, FAILURE TO SHIFT, STALLING, DELAYED ACCELERATION, OR LOSS OF POWER. 'THESE CONDITIONS ARE HAZARDOUS BECAUSE THEY SEVERELY AFFECT THE DRIVER'S ABILITY TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE DURING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS AND PREVENT DRIVERS FROM ACCELERATING TO MAINTAIN SAFE SPEEDS IN TRAFFIC,'

THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN AND OUT OF THE SHOP FOR THE LAST YEAR. THE CAR HAS SIGNIFICANT VIBRATION WHEN TURNING ON MY AC AND LIGHTS. THE GAS MILEAGE HAS DROPPED FROM 30MPG TO 17 MPG. THE CAR LUNGES FORWARD WHEN TAKING OF AND STARTING. I WAS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION WHERE THE ISSUES PARTIALLY CAUSED ME TO REAR END SOMEONE. THE CAR WAS TOTALED. IN THE VEHICLE INSPECTION THE INSURANCE COMPANY FOUND THE FRAME TWISTED. THE ACCIDENT WAS A LOW SPEED COLLISION WHERE NO ONE WAS INJURED OTHER THEN MYSELF AND THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME A LATE 90'S EARLY 20'S LEXUS CAR RED IN COLOR HAD LITTLE DAMAGE. HYUNDAI IS UNWILLING TO HELP ME WITH THE ISSUES PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED AND I WAS TSEEN AND REATED FOR CHEMICAL BURN FROM THE AIRBAG

SO WHEN LEAVING FROM A COMPLETE STOP IN DRIVE LETTING OFF THE BRAKE PETAL, AND LETTING THE VEHICLE START ROLLING ITSELF IN DRIVE WILL START VIBRATING AND MAKING CLUNKING METAL NOISES. WILL KEEP DOING IT UNLESS I EITHER DO TWO OF THE FOLLOWING THINGS STEP ON THE ACCELERATOR PETAL, OR PUSH ON THE BREAKS AND COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. AND WHEN THE VEHICLES FRONT WHEELS ARE TURNED WHEN TAKING OFF FROM A STOP IT'S 2 TIMES WORSE. IT DOES IT ABOUT 2-3 TIMES DAILY. I'VE TAKEN IT TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TO FIX UNDER THE WARRANTY AND THEY CLAIM THAT EVERYTHING IS NORMAL. DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS POSSIBLE THO BECAUSE OF THE PERSISTENT PROBLEM I KEEP FACING. PLEASE MAYBE LOOK INTO THIS AS SOMETHING SEND NOT RIGHT.

WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, CAR STALLED AND WOULD NOT GO OVER 5 MPH. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED A FAILED CATALYTIC CONVERTER (19,038 MILES). UNIT WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. RECENTLY, SAME EXACT PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN. DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, STALLED, HAD VEHICLE TOWED. DEALERSHIP SAYS FAILED CATALYTIC CONVERTER LED TO LOWER ENGINE FAILURE. REPORTED UNIT UNDER WARRANTY, BUT WOULD BE OVER A MONTH TO GET A SHORT BLOCK FOR REPLACEMENT. AFTER READING ABOUT OTHER MODELS WITH EXCESSIVE EXHAUST TEMPS CAUSING FAILURES, I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS PROBLEM IS GOING TO REOCCUR. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF CATALYTIC CONVERTERS FAILING ON NEW CARS AND CERTAINLY NOT TWICE WITH UNDER 30,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. SECOND FAILURE HAPPENED SATURDAY FEB 16, 2019. CAR IS STILL AT THE DEALERSHIP.

WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP THE CAR HESITATES, THEN JUMPS FORWARD, THAT HESITATES AGAIN BEFORE ACCELERATING NORMALLY. THIS IS THE USUAL BEHAVIOR WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP, WHETHER ACCELERATING RAPIDLY OR SMOOTHLY. THE BEHAVIOR HAS ALWAYS BEEN PRESENT SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW. THE DEALER CLAIMS IT IS NORMAL BEHAVIOR BUT IT IS A BEHAVIOR I'VE NEVER EXPERIENCED OTHER CARS.

CAR SOMETIMES ACCELERATES BY ITSELF EVEN WHEN OFF THE GAS AND ON THE BRAKES. LUNGES IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. PASSING GEAR SOMETIMES REVS UP TO 6500RPM'S BUT STAYS IN THE CURRENT SPEED. SOMETIMES CAR STAYS AT A CERTAIN RPM EVEN IF NOT ON THE GAS AND WONT SLOW DOWN. BAD LAG AND TERRIBLE DEAD SPOTS IN ACCELERATION. I FEEL LIKE TRANSMISSION IS NOT COMMUNICATING WELL WITH CONTROL MODULE AND GAS PEDAL POSITION SENSOR IS WAY OFF THE MARK. CAR HAS PUT ME IN LIFE THREATENING SITUATIONS BUT HYUNDAI SERVICE SAYS THEY CANT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM BUT ONLY DROVE IT 7 MILES. I BOUGHT CAR BRAND NEW AND JUST TURNED 5800 MILES BUT HAS BEEN BACK FOR THIS PROBLEM 4 TIMES NOW.
