1993 JEEP CHEROKEE UNDERBODY FIRE HAZARD.*MR THE CONSUMER EXPLAINED THAT THIS VEHICLE HAD NEVER BEEN OPERATED IN AN AREA WITH ROAD SALT BUT HE STILL CHOSE TO HAVE THE DEALER UNDERCOAT THE ENTIRE VEHICLE. WHEN THE CONSUEMR RELOCATED TO ANOTHER AREA HE CHECKED UNDER THE VEHCLE AND FOUND SEVERAL SMALL HOLES AND WAS ABLE TO SEE THE VEHICLE'S INTERIOR CARPET. HE REMOVED THE REAR SEATS AND FOUND THAT THE FLOOR BOARD HAD BEEN ROTTING FROM THE INSIDE OUT ABOVE THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. THE CONSUMER BELIEVES THE WATER IS FROM THE EXTREME HEAT FROM THE EXHAUST FOLLOWED BY RAPID COOLING. *NM

THE INSIDE DRIVER'S DOOR TOP HINGE BROKE AND THE BOTTOM HINGE WAS PARTIALLY BROKEN, MAKING IT UNSAFE TO DRIVE . DEALER WAS NOTIFIED, AND SUGGESTED TO THE CONSUMER TO REPORT IT TO NHTSA. *AK
THE PASSENGER DOOR UPPER HINGE HAD SLOWLY BECOME UNATTACHED TO THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS NEVER ANY ROUGH USAGE OF THE DOOR. THE HINGE NOW IS COMPLETELY UNATTACHED AND THE DOOR IS USELESS AND CANNOT BE OPENED FOR FEAR OF IT FALLING OFF. THE DRIVER DOOR IS JUST NOW SHOWING SIGNS OF THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS VEHICLE WAS WELL TAKEN CARE OF DURING ITS OWNERSHIP. THIS IS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT THAT WE NEED TO TAKE CARE OF AND SIMPLY CANNOT AFFORD IT. I HATE TO SEE MY WIFE RIDING IN THE BACK SEAT. IT ISN'T RIGHT. IT'S NOT OUR FAULT.
WHEN JEEP GETS TO RUNNING TEMPERATURE (5-10 MINUTES) IT WILL BACK AND STALL WHEN YOU GO TO TAKE OFF FROM A STOP. VERY DANGEROUS WHEN MERGING WITH TRAFFIC OR AT BUSY INTERSECTION. HAD BEEN IN SHOP FOR 10 WEEKS, REPLACED COMPUTER, TRIED MANY SENSOR REPLACEMENTS TO NO AVAIL, MECHANIC GAVE UP, NOW AT DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY CAN FIND NOTHING WRONG (NO COMPUTER CODE STORED) WHEN IT IS JUST RUNNING.THEY HAVE NOT DRIVEN IT ON THE ROAD FOR FEAR OF BREAKING DOWN IN TRAFFIC. CAN NOT GET IT STARTED AGAIN UNTIL IT "COOLS DOWN" OIL PRESSURE GAUGE READING VERY HIGH (ANY CORRELATION?) WAS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM AT FIRST,( STARTED LAST DEC., BOUGHT IT IN NOV) NOW CHRONIC, WITH EVERY DRIVE. THE LAST TIME I DROVE IT, IT WAS ALSO STARTING OFF IN THIRD GEAR (AUTOMATIC) ALTHOUGH THE COMPUTER REPLACEMENT (REMANUFACTURED) SEEMS TO HAVE FIXED THAT, ALTHOUGH I ALSO HAD THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER CHANGED. (I HAD NOT EXPERIENCED ANY TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS UP TO THEN) HOOD LATCH SEEMS TO HAVE A PROBLEM AND BATTERY RECENTLY DIED, NEEDING REPLACEMENT. *LA

DEALER'S BODY SHOP BELIEVES THIS IS UNUSUAL PROBLEM IN THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY AND FEELS IT'S A MANUFACTURING DEFAULT. BODY SHOP ALSO NOTICED RUST STARTING IN OTHER BRACKETS IN DOORS. OWNER TOOK JEEP TO DEALER, BUT DEALER REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, UNLESS IT'S AT OWNER'S EXPENSE. OWNER CONTACTED DAIMLER/CHRYSLER'S CUSTOMER ASSIST. CTR. AT 800-992-1997, WHICH ALERTED OWNER TO NHTSA'S INVESTIGATION OF THIS PROBLEM. JEEP OWNER BELIEVES A RECALL IS IN ORDER. EACH JEEP DOOR HAS TWO BRACKETS. AT THIS TIME, DEALER AND MANUFACTURER REFUSE TO CORRECT DEFECT AT THEIR EXPENSE UNLESS A RECALL IS ORDERED.*AK

THE TOP HINGE ON THE DRIVER'S DOOR IS ATTACHED TO WEAK METAL, CAUSING THE HINGE TO COME LOOSE. THIS CAUSES THE DOOR TO ANGLE DOWN AND CLOSE INCORRECTLY. BECAUSE OF THIS THE DOOR WILL NOT ALWAYS LATCH FULLY AND THE DOOR CAN SWING OPEN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. I HAD IT REPARED ONCE BY A PROFESSIONAL BODY REPAIR MAN, AND IT HAS NOW FAILED A SECOND TIME.

THE HATCH BACK DOOR WHEN OPEN DOES NOT STAY IN THE OPEN POSITION. THE DOOR WILL DROP DOWN SLOWLY ABOUT A FOOT OR 2. THIS MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO LOAD AND UNLOAD ITEMS FROM THE REAR OR CARGO AREA OF THE CHEROKKE. I HAVE ALLREADY BUMP MY HEAD ONCE OR TWICE. THE DOOR IS SUPPOSED TO STAY IN THE FULL OPEN POSITION BY 2 SHOCK-TYPE HINGES WHICH EVIDENTLY ARE NOT HOLDING

WHEN VEHICLE TRAVELS THROUGH STANDING WATER AT SPEEDS OVER 30 MPH, THE WATER IS SPLASHED FORWARD AND UP, RATHER THAN TO THE SIDES. THIS CAUSES THE WINDSHIELD TO BECOME COMPLETELY COVER WITH WATER, OBSTRUCTING DRIVER VISIBILITY.
