Parking brake on the jeep automatically engaged while driving. Had vehicle towed to dealership where a new parking brake switch was installed and programed and told it was ready to go. Picked it up and it did the same thing again and turned on the auto start stop light. Took it back to the dealership and they said water had gotten into the back area and corroded the parking brake module and the connector. They wanted to charge me $2500 to fix. I took the vehicle home and parked it and started doing research. This is a known problem that could affect 1.2 million vehicles. My jeep only has 73,500 miles on it and is regularly serviced. It's driven roughly 4 miles a day. This is a safety issue so why isn't there a recall on it. It is a defect in design not a consumer made issue.
A SERVICE SHIFTER message appeared out of nowhere, and now all the lights turn on regardless of which gear I'm in. After a quick internet search, it appears MANY people have experienced this exact same issue with various Jeep models. It seems this is an issue the company should take responsibility for and fix with a recall. The parts to replace this faulty design are expensive, and a repair shop cost would be exorbitant.

Service Shifter warning light comes on when driving. When put in park and key is turned off will reset but periodically will reoccur. First occurred around 20,000 miles but is becoming more frequent now.
Constantly Randomly Getting (Service Shifter) Notification and all the lights on the shifter light up on the shifter ... It Resets when i put it in Park and Stop Engine - When i ask the Jeep Dealer about it they say it must be doing it when i bring it in before the can trouble shoot the problem.... they say they cant check the computer code list and see when its happened and why ..... I believe this is a safety problem that should be a Recall and Fixed - Before it Ends up causing an Accident and Death ! And may have already cause Accidents and Deaths !
I have had this vehicle since 2017. Over the years the shifter lights have flashed but I turn off the car and it’s fine. I believe there are electrical issues with these models. Yesterday my car randomly shut off. It could have been due to the heat but it was very dangerous. My brights have gone out and it could be because of an electrical issue. I’ve had to change my thermostat twice. I will be looking into trading this car out soon. It could be dangerous as I travel often.
I drive a 2017 Jeep Cherokee and have experienced repeated instances of power loss while driving. The vehicle will suddenly jerk, hesitate, or feel like its struggling to maintain momentum, especially at lower speeds or when turning. On one occasion, it felt like the transmission slipped and I briefly lost acceleration, which was very alarming and could have caused a crash if I been merging or crossing traffic. I've also had the "Service 4WD" warning light appear intermittently. I took the vehicle to both a jeep dealership and an independent shop for diagnostics, but neither was able to find an active trouble code. However, the symptoms have continued and are getting worse. After reading about the recent recall (NHTSA Campaign 25V011) involving the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) in 2017-2019 Jeep Cherokees, I believe this may be an issue I am experiencing. At this time, Jeep has not released a fix, and I'm concerned that the vehicle is unsafe to drive until the PTU can be inspected and repaired. This seems to be a known and widespread issue that puts drivers at risk, and I'm hoping this report helps move the investigation forward.
I BOUGHT MY CAR IN 2020, IN THAT SAME YEAR I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER BECAUSE "SERVICE SHIFTER" LIGHT KEPT COMING UP. IT WOULD COME UP IN MOMENTS WHERE I WOULD BRAKE OR GAS AND THE CAR SKIPPED BEFORE COMPLETING THE TASK. I ENDED SPENDING $600 FOR THE 'REPAIRMENTS" FOR IT TO NOT GET FIXED. I TOOK IT BACK AGAIN TO GET IT CHECKED OUT AND THE DEALER SAID IT WAS FINE. ITS 2025 NOW AND IM STILL HAVING ISSUES WITH IT AND IT ONLY GOT WORSE. ITS MORE OF A ROUGHER SKIP WHILE BRAKING AND GASING, IT ALSO DOES IT UNEXPECTEDLY AND I GET WORRY THAT IT MIGHT CAUSED A CRASHED AT SOME POINT. IT HAS ALSO AFFECTED THE INITAL ACCELERATION OF THE CAR BECAUSE I HAVE TO PUSH THE GAS ALL THE WAY FOR IT TO GAIN MOMENTUM
I SUBMITTED A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE SERVICE SHIFTER THAT I BEEN HAVING SINCE 2020 RIGHT AFTER I FINANCE THE CAR WITH DEALERSHIP. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED AND IT HASNT BEEN RESOLVED EVEN AFTER TAKING IT BACK FOR REPAIRING. RECENTLY ON 6/24/2025 MY CAR STOPPED ON THE EXPRESSWAY, THE SERVICE SHIFTER CAME ON AND ALSO ELECTRICAL THROTTLE SERVICE CONTROL. MY CAR STARTED TREMBLING AND IT WOULD TURN ON BUT I COULDNT DRIVE IT. THE EXPRESSWAY ROAD ASSISTANCE WAS ABLE TO PUSH ME OUT THE EXPRESSWAY AND IN THE PROCESS MY CAR STARTED TO RUN BUT SHAKY STILL AND I WAS ABLE TO GET IT BACK HOME.

When the car is in park, all of my shifter lights turn red and I receive a Service Shifter warning. It does not happen all of the time but over the past day, it has happened when the car is in park.

The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that the battery had drained quickly and failed to retain a charge. The vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was jump-started. The engine oil and check engine warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, the vehicle jolted while driving and while coming to a stop. The contact stated that the Start/Stop system was inoperable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnostic test. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000. Over the past several months, I’ve experienced intermittent issues with the electronic parking brake on my 2017 Jeep Cherokee. On several occasions, the parking brake activated unexpectedly while I was driving, creating safety concerns and inconsistent vehicle behavior. As of two days ago, the issue became significantly worse. The electronic parking brake activated again while the vehicle was stationary and has since failed to disengage, rendering the vehicle undrivable. I had the vehicle examined by a certified mechanic, who performed a diagnostic test. The results indicated a water intrusion issue that has caused damage to the electronic parking brake module. The mechanic explained that moisture had likely entered the module area, leading to electrical malfunction and failure of the system to release the brake. This is now a critical mechanical and safety concern that requires immediate repair and resolution.
I purchased a 2017 certified pre-owned Jeep Cherokee from a Jeep dealership in March 2020. Starting in late 2022/early 2023, while driving, everything electrical would shut off and stop functioning without warning (dashboard, radio, air or heat if on, lights near gear shift, could not use hazard lights, turning signal, or power windows), and shortly after the engine would die, leaving me stalled in the middle of the street. I would then have to put the car in park, turn the car off and turn it back on. I took it to 2 Jeep dealerships in Michigan where I was living at the time and they refused to look further than scanning the car to determine if any codes appeared and found no codes. This started happening more frequently in summer 2023 and I took it to a dealership in Indiana; no hard codes came up again and they were unable to replicate the issue. They found some worn wiring with the radio and replaced the radio, hoping it would resolve the issue (invoice attached). This issue started occurring again [XXX] more frequently than before (4 times in a 15-minute window) - this time I was on the highway and had no way to signal the cars behind as I could not use the turning signal or hazard lights and the electrical and engine cut off simultaneously without warning, almost causing a serious accident. The car has been at the dealership for 2 weeks now, and they are unable to replicate the issue; therefore, unable to provide a diagnosis. There was a safety recall for 2017-2018 Jeep Cherokees for the PTU (documentation attached), but my VIN doesn't fall within that recall. Therefore, I am filing a safety report to initiate an investigation for this issue, as this is a significant safety risk and has the potential to cause a fatal accident for myself as a driver and others on the road. This is happening quite often with the Jeeps ranging from 2014-2021 per Jeep forums (documentation attached), and no one has found a solution. While driving, multiple warning alerts appeared on my dashboard, including “Service Airbag,” “Service Four Wheel Drive,” “Service Shifter,” “Service ABS,” “Traction Control Off,” and “Check Engine Light.” Shortly after, the vehicle lost power and became immobile, preventing me from moving it to the side of the road. The parking brake engaged automatically and could not be disengaged. Additionally, the windshield wipers activated without being turned on. These issues rendered the car unsafe and unmovable. I called a tow truck, but the vehicle was towed before it arrived, leading to further costs and complications. The malfunctioning systems pose significant safety risks, including the failure of critical components like the airbag and ABS. The loss of power and inability to move the vehicle caused a hazardous situation, and I was unable to take preventive action. Issue: Persistent “Service Shifter” Warning on 2017 Jeep Cherokee I own a 2017 Jeep Cherokee, and the “Service Shifter” warning continues to appear even after replacing both the wiring harness and bezel. Every so often when putting vehicle in park while running or at start up I get a dash message “service shifter” and all the gear lights light up and I’m unable to shift out of park. The dealership mechanic has now looked at it three times replacing the shifting bezel, wiring harness, and shift box. The issues still happens almost daily.
There are 3 things: sometimes when I go to start my jeep, it will start and cut off. Secondly: my rear back up camera keeps going in and out. I’ve had it replaced and it still goes out. Especially if it rains. Lastly, my “service shifter” light pops up randomly while I am driving and all of the lights on the gear shift will light up. It will not let me upload my videos of the screen

I was driving my vehicle and it lost power going down the highway about 65 mph maybe 70. The power shut off on my vehicle and then it came back on but it was very dim and it say that way for till I got out of it and it was very scary my My cruise control keeps shutting off okay I'm having major problems with my transmission it slips a lot I need to know what to do about that.
My car shuts off when I go over little bumps and light comes on saying press break and shift into park. Then it doesnt start right away but eventually starts again. Also when I go over little bumps my interior lights turn on.

Have a problem with my call losing all power in my jeep while sitting at an intersection waiting for the light to change. Almost got rear-ended cause my car just suddenly lost power. Power finally came back in 20 or 30 seconds but I had people honking horns and I'm was frazzled. Now I have this Service Shifter error on my dashboard and the PNDR lights all are on and red..Came on Jeep automakers. Do better!!
On the speedometer screen a message “service shifter” popped up on my 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude. Upon further research, this is an ongoing issue with thousands of jeep owners.
For about two years we have been getting a "Service Shifter" display code on the dash, red lights on all the gear indicators by the shift knob, and the service chime sound when the code comes on. At first the issue happened occasionally, and now it is on almost constantly. We have no dashboard visibility when the code is displayed and are concerned that the problem is worsening. We will be bringing it to a local Jeep dealership to run diagnostics, but are dubious of what can be done to actually fix the issue after following many Jeep forums online. So we are raising our concerns here. The FCA Service Bulletin seems to correctly identify the problem: Number: 08-103-18 Group: 08 - Electrical Date: 08/09/2018 Subject: Service Shifter Message We have observed that this is a common problem with Jeep products, especially with 2017 Jeep Cherokees. It should likely result in a recall.
Our 2017 Jeep Cherokee had the service 4WD light come on Tuesday. Our mileage is 60,800. We took it to our local mechanic, who ran a diagnostic. The code C14A7-97 came up as active on our vehicle. Our mechanic said there was a recall for this issue for our model year. We found "Safety Recall W47/NHTSA 20V-343 PTU Input Spline". Since our Jeep had the exact issue that the recall covers and falls within the 2014-2017 manufacture years, we made an appointment with a local Chrysler dealership. We took it in today for them to look at it. They confirmed that the code active on our vehicle is C14A7-97 and that our 4wd system is not working and that if we are in a situation that we need 4wd we will be at risk. They then told us that our VIN is not listed on the recall and our bill would be $3,200. I pressed that it makes no sense that we are having the exact issue in the recall, that we have a Jeep Cherokee as listed in the recall, that our model year is between 2014-2017 as in the recall, and that our mileage is exactly around the mileage listed in the recall that this problem surfaces("on about 67,240"); but it isn't listed in the recall. How can we be having the exact issue reported and not be covered in the recall? We feel they are taking some loophole and risking the safety of their customers, specifically our safety.
The Electronic Parking Brake turned on after putting vehicle in PARK. Could this brake have been applied while driving? If so, there could have been multiple fatalities or serious injuries. I did find some text on how there was a lawsuit going on about this.
Message "service shifter" pops up on the instrument panel, and a series of red alert lights appear next to every gear on the automatic transmission shifter lever. The dealer is unable to fix the problem! They replace the wiring harness, they replace the shifters themselves, they reset the computers ? And the problem always returns!
1. Consumer is a Permanent and Total Disabled Vet (Unemployable) and this vehicle is the only vehicle Consumer has. 2. I have a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk KL (XXX) I have owned since day one with 56k miles. 3. At all times I did not receive any recall notices for correct known safety issues. 5. I have OBD-II tools of vLinker (use everyday for LiveData), BlueDriver and TogDog. 6. For almost as long as I have had the Jeep I have experienced the following. When I say the following I mean, at all times: a. Any type of road- surface- weather- time of day- city, highway and interstate driving- speed to include deaccelerating, at stop sign/light- 1-3 x’s a day, weekly- it doesn’t matter when or where b. The PTU was replaced in 2018 according to service report, service stating they couldn’t replicate issue although they had videos, etc a total of 4-x’s c. But, I keep experiencing the following: d. Loss of acceleration, push on gas pedal nothing happens, sometimes can let off for a bit and then accelerates, revs to 6-7k up/down using/not cruise, cruise doesn’t turn off, pulling trailer and not- lose brakes when stopped rolls back, parking brake message, traction control message, service engine message, loud engine noises from in front of driver, rear back and under center console- lose of rear wheel traction, loss of park- shifting to park grinding noises, 7. I’m not the only one with the same issues. I know a lady who has the same problem with her vehicle and has been quoted thousands of dollars to fix it. Cylinders and engine housing.. anti freeze leak.. and then expect us to pay expensive car payments.
Vehicle is putting up a code for “service shifter” while driving, which turns off when the car is turned off. Code does not read for dealerships to fix issue. it is reoccurring and we are concerned as we have seen a 2017 jeep Cherokee wreck out after throwing this code and “locking up the engine”. We are secondhand owners of this jeep and believe the previous owner sold this car because of said issue because it came up within a month of us purchasing the car.
2017 Jeep Cherokee shows "Service Shifter" in dashboard and all lights light up on shifter. This problem first happened in 2020 with 33,101 miles when the car was under warranty. The dealer "fixed" the problem and it went away. Now at 79,000 the exact same problem is back again. "Service Shifter" appeared on the dash and the lights "P", "R", "N", "D", and the one between "-" and "+" were all lit up, as if the electronics did not know which gear the car was in. Car would then not go above 50 mph while on the interstate and shifting was slow and jerky. When you're unable to control elements of your driving, you are unable to ensure a safe experience. This shifter issue is directly correlated. The problem is widespread in online forums and seems to be predictable with this model and line of cars. The car is available for inspection upon request. It's common for this to be an issue with cars less than 50000 miles which is a clear sign that this is a manufacturer's fault that needs to be corrected.
The shifter turns all red lights and service shifter appears in the warnings. There was a recall for this on certain vin #s for the same make and model but Chrysler refuses to acknowledge the wider problem effecting others. They advise you to pay out of pocket and I can’t afford that. This is clearly an issue that is wide spread and the danger is unknown what can happen but I don’t feel safe driving my [XXX] in a vehicle with all these warning lights. The issue started apparently 2 years ago but hadn’t been addressed by my wife because she was out of work and not driving it much. We need both our vehicles safe and Chrysler needs to fix the issues that their manufacturers caused. There are so many articles and complaints about this same issue and Chrysler refusing to fix it. Service shifter light displays randomly with PRND all light up. Goes away if you turn the car off remove key and restart. Have taken it to a technician in the past, they said they couldn't tell us anything.
Car keeps saying service shifter. The lights on the dash are now flickering on and off. The car hesitates to which gears and take off.
This past year my 2017 Jeep Cherokee has started to randomly turn on the Service Shifter light and at the same time all the shifter lights turn red. The transmission starts acting differently as well when it comes on. If I pull over and shut the car off and then turn it back on it will be normal again. I cannot bring this into the dealership as my warranty is no longer available and I will not pay loads of money for them to tell me nothing.

When driving my vehicle going 30 miles per hour the car stopped by itself and gave error message “ Shift to park or neutral Press brake or select gear” . I have to put my car in park and try and restart the vehicle. This has happened 4 times with in the last week.
On [XXX] my 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude experienced full power failure while driving, resulting in an uncontrolled stopped with lack of power brakes, steering or other electrical assistance while in middle of road with traffic traveling 20 mph just avoiding impact with car in front of me. Had I been on highway or traveling faster I may have encountered a deadly impact to rock walls on road or surrounding traffic or oncoming traffic. There is a recall listed [XXX] Campaign number [XXX]. I have made a complaint to JEEP 800-853-1403 who noted my vin with case number [XXX]. My jeep vin is not included in recall notice but clearly should be and covered for repair under [XXX] . My Jeep regained power 5 min later and I drove it knowing unsafe to repair shop where it sits. My Vin should be added to the already listed appx 67k jeeps 2014-2017 year. I also have MOPAR extended warranty. I will not drive my jeep for obvious reasons until the repair is made. Today while driving, my vehicle’s power steering went out causing me to pull over to the side of the road. My car was running, but I was unable to move it. When I put it in drive, the lights on the shifter would flash, but the car would not change gears. The problem appears to be electrical as the battery is brand new, and the engine was running.
The electronic parking brake in my 2017 Jeep Cherokee became stuck in the engaged position. The car would not move backward or forward. This happened when the car was parked on a neighborhood street. Had to have the car towed to the dealer, where the problem was diagnosed as failure of the parking brake module due to a water leak from the sunroof drain. Repair bill was over $1300. Luckily, the brake became stuck while the car was parked. Had the car been in motion, safety would definitely have been an issue.

Saying Service Shifter. All light by PRND come on red. Have seen a lot of reports saying same thing for 2014-2018 Jeep Cherokees. Has been looked at by mechanic. Has been coming on once every week for 3 months now.

I slide off the road and went into a ditch then rolled a dew times no airbags denied I was upside-down Bach shoulder head injury and left leg all on the left side .y mirror wouldn't call 911 I have photos
At 57,537 miles, the heads-up speedometer and all other displays were disabled with an error message to "Service Shifter". At the same time, each PRNDL indicator light on the shifter panel lit up RED. Very disconcerting! I cycled the engine and that restored normal operation, but I could find no information on this error in the JEEP manual. On line, however, I found many people concerned about this same error with different potential causes/fixes.
The car randomly activated the Electronic Parking Break and it will not disengage. I have disconnected the Battery hoping to reset the module but that did not work. This car will also randomly refuse to start or shut down. Only resetting the ECM/PCM will clear the error and get the car moving again. This is a safety concern because the Ebrake may engage while moving at high speeds. There is a warning light indicating that Ebrake needs service. There is also an unknown leak coming in from the roof and running towards the back lift gate. Water will pool in the storage section to the left and right of rear lift gate.
There was already a recall on the make and model of my car, Jeep Cherokee Latitude; however, when I search by VIN it shows zero unrepaired recalls. So if the problem is fixed (no one even attempted to fix my car), why does my car still shut off in the middle of driving? When it shuts off I can’t turn the wheel, Can’t put it in park, and the gas and brakes/ABS don’t work. This has happened many times with my daughter, currently 4yo, in the car; why do I have to risk my life every single time we need to go somewhere? Every single dealership and mechanic I’ve brought it to says there is nothing wrong with the car, yet it continues to shut off while driving… I did crash the first time it happened, but it was in a snow storm and possibly unrelated? No injuries or damage.

Service shifter notification/warning comes on randomly. When this warning is on, all of the lights on the gear shift light up (p,r,n,d). The engine feels like it is slipping, and the vehicle will drive slowly & is very loud. The gas pedal can be pressed completely to the floor and the car will not accelerate fast enough. The airbag and parking braking notification flash as well. Check engine light comes too.
As I was driving all the lights on my [XXX] gear lit up. On my dashboard, it said service shifter. Well, I continued driving. My truck started to slow down a D kept flashing on my dashboard. I had to pull over to the side as the truck was coming to a complete stop. I turned off the ignition waited a few minutes. Turn my truck back on and I was back on the road. After the weekend rain, I went to start the 2017 Jeep Cherokee it did not start. I had the battery car jumped and it started up when driving it the steering wheel locked up. The dashboard started to display antilock brake assist off system, power steering assist off system, service transmission restart in Park with vehicle 0 speed, and so many red lights started flashing afterwards. I was in the car with my children a car that was coming behind me had to swerve around me as my car instantly stopped. This could’ve been a horrific or fatal car accident. I just hit my car check to renew my plates the emissions pass and everything safety was good. With this current situation, I would now have to get my car back to the dealership for further inspection, and will be without a car.

Transmission shifting erratically/service shifter warning displays. Vehicle will lose power at inopportune times due to failure to shift, which could cause a collision, or an accident if on a busy road. Also vehicle will have unwanted acceleration when attempting to come to a stop. This can be dangerous as it may push the vehicle into an intersection after you have attempted to stop. There are various complaints of this issue on various websites and media forums yet no mention of the manufacturer making any attempts to resolve. I have also found the service shifter issue to disable the engine and not allow the vehicle to start which can leave someone stranded.
Indicator lights are shown on dash include gas cap, seat belt and engine. All gear lights display red when driving and states to service shifter. Dash displays service engine soon. Service air bag system. Seat belt will constantly ding even though it is buckled and will not stop dinging. Replaced gas cap, but indicator light continues to display on dash. Strongly believe there are electrical issues causing theses defects. Took to local dealership and they performed an update, but the indicator lights started to display again the following day, along with the constant dinging from the vehicle not being able to sensor the seat belt being buckled. This has been happening for over a year now and no one seems to be acknowledging there is an extreme safety concern with this vehicle. Strongly believe it is due to the fact of being at fault and not wanting to correct the defects without compensation. I did have an incident in July of 2022, my car would not get out of park. I was in a drive through and put my car in park. When I went to put my car in drive. The vehicle completely shut off and began to roll backwards. The next set of issues, I first noticed the issues in the beginning of 2023. The service 4wd light is on and the parking brake will not engage. The 4wd itself works just fine, each terrain mode will engage. So Ilderton Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram (High Point, NC), looked at my vehicle and said the PTU was bad and needs to be replaced. This passed weekend, I was driving entering a highway via acceleration lane and my car had trouble switching speed limits. Which leads me to believe the necessary power was not able to perform. This is detrimental to the safety of myself and others. Should my car's brakes fail or car lose power; it could seriously injure myself, innocent people in the vicinity of my car, or mechanics working on my car, etc. I work at a Pediatric office and would hate for the brakes to fail at work. Chrysler has already recalled 96,000 Jeep Cherokees for the exact same issue. Due to this, the PTU is back ordered and cannot be located anywhere in the US.
Parking brake engage itself upon starting car and was still engaged while backing out of garage. Service parking brake and service start/stop warning lights are now on. Investigation for repair found excessive drain on battery for age of the battery (14 months).
Service shifter message has been appearing and at times, all lights on PRND lighting up. The vehicle transmission may still engage or may not. Recent occurrence on 07/13/2013, vehicle took 20 minutes before transmission engaged. Fortunately, I was parked at work, going home. If this occurred on the road, has potential of wreck happening. Service shifter light keeps going on after having shifter replaced 1 year ago
Service shifter light illuminates several times per month but disappears when engine is off. Battery randomly drains all power and needs to be jump started when temperature outside is warmer than 76 degrees
Water is leaking into vehicle when it rains. Floor boards are soaked after it rains. Water is coming into contact with electrical somewhere. Causing loss of power, and lights to flicker. Took to dealership a couple times, they couldn't find the leak. They said they found it but didn't. After a couple attempts to fix the issue. The dealership refunded my money and said they couldn't help.
Upon starting the vehicle, the service shifter message came on the dashboard screen and all the lights on the shifter illuminated red. If I drive with it on, it stays on. When I turn off the Jeep and turn it back on, the message and lights go off. However, this message has appeared about once a month for the last few months. It is unknown if my safety has been at risk. I've called two different dealers and got widely different answers about what the problem could be, as well as very different cost estimates to fix it. But, no one really knows what the fix is. I've investigated this problem online and have found 100s if not 1000s of complaints about the same problem with no clear solution. Why is there no recall for this yet. It's been going on for years.
My service shifter light stays on almost all the time. The gears PRND are all red lights.
At random times, the vehicle will notify of a "Service Shifter" message that pops up on screen. I drive a 2017 Jeep Cherokee, and bought it in 2019 with only 16,000 miles on it. The notification first came up when I hit 20,000 miles and has persisted ever since periodically. If you search "Jeep Cherokee service shifter" you can find NUMEROUS forums where people have reported the same issues. It is clearly an issue that needs to be looked into further. I have already filed a safety problem before, and nothing was done about it. I recommend looking into this issue further, and googling the issue as well-there are far too many people reporting the same problem and there has been no recall to be issued.

Service shifter warning comes on multiple times while driving
2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2L, V6 Service Bulletin Number: 08-054-18 REV. A Dated September 13, 2018 Group-08 Electrical Code tester detected a failure of the service shifter. A warning light would come on with service shifter error. The failure could cause vehicle to stop and not restart, or it could restart after setting for a while. We had purchased an extended warranty, but our dealership it would not cover the service shifter failure under the warranty. We then took the vehicle to a repair shop, and they said both the shifter harness and bezel needed to be replaced. The mechanic said the part number had been changed for the bezel unit, indicating the part design had been changed from the original. Apparently, Chrysler was aware of the problem, but refused to do a recall. In researching our problem, it seems to be an ongoing problem. Thank goodness we had the problem fixed within a couple of weeks. We could have experienced possible harm if the shifter failed and stalled in traffic or on a busy road. We think a class action claim should be brought against Chrysler for not implementing a recall. We should be reimbursed for our repair by Chrysler. The mechanic removed the defective part and we did not save it. He could provide details if requested. Repair cost $277.31.
The automatic transmission shifter transmits a warning to the instrument panel display with the words SERVICE SHIFTER. All of the red shifter console lights light up at once. The vehicle will not engage the PARK safety brake at times after parking the vehicle when the warning is illuminated. While operating the vehicle no other instrument readings are available (speed, mileage, etc). The vehicle has not yet been inspected by a dealer or mechanic and is a continuing problem. This issue first appeared one month ago and there was no other indication of a problem prior to the first occurrence.
Issue: Burning smell in vehicle. Diagnosis: driver side visor wiring burned, potential fire hazard. Notes: We noticed a burning plastic smell several times in vehicle cabin. I searched around but couldn’t locate the smell. After the third time, the Homelink garage door opener located in the driver’s side sun visor stopped working. Also noted that the vanity mirror lights were not working either. This wiring is not on a fuse. I check the wiring to the visor with a voltmeter and noted 12 bolts to the visor. I removed the passenger visor and plugged it into the driver side. The vanity mirror lights had power and worked. Plugging the driver side visor into the passenger side showed it to not work. Therefore, the issue is the wiring burned inside the visor, breaking the connection. The visor is stitched all around and not easily accessible without cutting and thereby ruining the fabric and appearance of the visor. So wiring is not easily accessible without having to install a new liner.
Every time it rains, water leaks into the rear of the vehicle through the ceiling and cracks on the side. As a result, water is soaking through the ceiling, rear speakers and trunk. This is causing mold and deterioration of all parts below the spare tire and is a safety issue.
When driving my jeep the dashboard will randomly give me a warning to service my shifter and all of the lights on shifter will go red. I have to turn my jeep off and back on for the lights to go back to normal. I have had to replace the power transfer unit due to the 4 wheel drive not working anymore. I took my car into the dealership to the PCM W84 Recall and two weeks later my transmission fluid exploded and the engine was smoking. Had to replace the heat ignition coil and the inlet hose. Paid $2,000 to repair and a week later my check engine light came on and now my car is overheating. Took it to the dealer and they added coolant and said it was an air bubble in the coolant. A couple of days later the issue happened again, took it in two more times and they filled the coolant, but now saying that the cylinder head gasket needs to be replaced which is another $1,700.
I have a 2017 Jeep Cherokee and been experiencing service shifter error when all the lights on gear shift lights up in red and this time I was at home and it also flashed oil change on dash board which I just had a recent oil change and this has been an issue off and on and dealership says there is no recall but they have heard of this issue. Not feeling safe to drive vehicle unsure if my car will stop while out. I have an appointment with dealership to see what the issue is. I only have about 72,000 miles on my vehicle.
The service shifter message came on the screen and all the lights on the shifter lit up. The engine would jerk or completely shut off while driving. Speed increased going downhill in cruise control. I brought it in 6 months ago and they said it was almost out of oil and very dirty. So they filled it without changing the filter. The dealer claimed to have updated the computer. Now the service shifter message is coming on again and all the lights come on next to the shifter. They are fixing that today - charging me for replacing the shifter and it taking only 1/2 hour. I think the charge is $500 - $600. They said it would not be covered under the bumper to bumper warranty included when purchasing the vehicle at 88,000 miles less than 1 year ago.
While driving the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly stops running without any warning. Engine stops. Car just coasts. PRNDL indicator (D for drive) on instrument cluster flashes instead of a constant D. Then some sort of messages comes up similar to "shift to neutral to start engine". Car will not restart. Car coasts to stop without power and no power steering. Then I need to turn ignition off. I will then cycle locks (locked then unlocked). Then turn on ignition. From here the car attempts to start but it is not an immediate start up like normal. The gauge needles (speedometer and tachometer) both go all the way to the right while the car attempts to restart but this startup takes about 10+ seconds of attempted cranking to finally restart. This is a long clicking sound before restart. This has happened 3-4 times now in the 30 days. Most recently on a main road where I had to coast without power and power steering to the shoulder. I have not yet been to the dealer. Car is out of warranty.
Service shifter warning continuous for 12 months. Recalled on the 2017 Grand Cherokee but this is am issue with the Cherokee latitude. This is a very serious safety issue & needs recalled for more vehicles!

in august 2021 my got a service parking brake warning. took to dealership to make a appointment got more warning on the drive there for traction control,brake warning and check engine. got a appointment for later in week. asked was it OK to drive was told yes it was OK. got in car to leave and every 4 to 6 inches parking brake would lock up. tried a few times to move car but couldn't go any where keep locking brakes up. went inside told service advisor said i would have to leave it with them. called for a ride and while waiting for ride service advisor tried to move car and same thing happened to him. they replaced parking brake module. then in January 2022 left work and got service parking brake warning again then traction control also after a few miles. managed to make it home and called dealership and got a appointment for a few days later. when i tried to go to work next time car would not start battery was dead. had it towed to dealership and the brake module and terminal was corroded and green also battery was shorted out and would not hold a charge { fried the battery}. had to replace battery,control module and wiring harness this time. guess i was lucky it didn't catch fire this time or it happen while driving at highway speeds.
Our 2017 Cherokee 46k displays “service shifter” and all lights on the shifter go red. The first time this happened (summer 2020) the dealership Hopkins, MN told me not to drive the vehicle and to bring in for service. They were not aware of this issue which I don't believe now. The appointment was 4 weeks out and once the dealership looked at vehicle as lights were off they could not diagnose. 2nd time this happened was not able to get into dealership that day. 3rd time this happened (7/22/2022) I immediately called the dealership on issue and they refused to look at vehicle the same day and told me to bring in on Monday 7/25/2022. Next day the lights did not come on. each time I call the Jeep dealership they give me a different response. Don't know if its safe to drive the vehicle in this state. There should be a recall on this issue.

When I started my 2017 Jeep Cherokee Limited this morning, a "service shifter" message appeared on my instrument panel. All the lights that indicate park, reverse, neutral, and drive were illuminated red - all at one time. I turned the car off and restarted it. The message was no longer indicated. However, I scheduled the car for service with my dealer. I wanted to add my voice to the others that have experienced this same issue. The car is not currently under a recall for this issue. But it seems to be a prevalent one for this year and model Jeep.
I was driving down the road and several lights in the dash popped on. The check engine light and a few others that I was not familiar with. Everything started blinking and it said "service shifter" and "service airbag system ". I put it in park and tried to put it back in drive and it would not go into drive and started rolling backwards. I had to push it into a parking lot and have it towed.

WE HAVE LOST ALL CONVIDENCE IN DRIVING OUR CAR IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. WE'VE BROUGHT THE CAR TO JEEP, THEY REPLACED PARTS, REPLACED SHIFTER WIRING, ITS BEEN BACK TO JEEP DEALER 3 TIMES. THEY CANNOT FIX THE ISSUE. THERE SHOULD BE A ELECTRICAL SHIFTER OR WIRING HARNESS RECALL OF SOME KIND.
Vehicle shifter service light keeps coming on causing vehicle to light up all of its shifter lights at the same time keeping it from engaging into gear any gear had to turn off and on for it to work
While driving at approximately 50 mph, the vehicles steering wheel locked, all lights on the dash came on and the car shut completely off. My daughter was able to slowly pump the breaks to stop because there was no traffic but had there been she could have been in a serious accident since the car completely shut down. This is a huge safety concern.
When I turned the car off, the lights on the dashboard and ceiling stayed longer than the appropriate time. I went back to check and the dashboard went off but the ceiling stayed on. Next both lights were off but the dashboard came back on when I shut the door. It also randomly messages that the license plate light is out but works fine.
I bought a 2017 Jeep Cherokee latitude two weeks ago by the time I drove it home the service shifter light came on. I bought this car and it was certified free of defects this has happened a half a dozen times now I called the dealer and told them about it and I saw what the fix was online. The fixe is to put in a new shifter bezel and a new wiring harness. The dealer refuses to do this and the vehicle is certified what can I do?

I was driving like normal about 15 mph after just pulling out of the gas station onto the main road and have no issues with my car as of late and all of a sudden it just stopped. All the lights lite up on the shift, every light lite up on the dash saying everything needed to be serviced, I was unable to move or do anything with the car, not even turn it off and i was in the middle of the road! Luckily no one was behind me and I was still able to engage my hazards. After about 10 min's my car turned off on it's own. I sat for another 10 before finally being able to turn it back on and move it to the side of the road and eventually get it back to my house 2 miles away. Clearly this is a serious safety issue and is not ok, especially the fact that my car was bought brand new and is not even 5 years old!
I started my vehicle and when I selected the drive gear all the red lights came on every gear. The service shifter warning came on the dash. I couldn’t move the vehicle for a week. The electronic parking brake start flashing on and off. I had this happen once before on vacation. I took it to the dealer in Vancouver Washington and they claim to have done a flash update, and took my brand new battery that was only three months old. Replaced it with the Mopar battery with less cold cranking amps, and charged me for it. Also, they refused to give me my battery back.
Car stalls without warning or indicator lights and will not restart in a safe manner. There are dozens of reports concerning this situation online and it is a SERIOUS safety issue that has received no attention. There is apparently and “incomplete” notice from JEEP that has failed to reach all customers. This has now happened to me three times — 2 of which were in situations that created significant safety risk.
My service shifter will lock up and the gear shift will read that my car is in park, reverse, neutral, drive all at the same time. My dash will read “service shifter” however it has been doing that since I purchased it. The wheels on the car will jerk and lock up. Luckily, I am not going fast and can safely pull over. The car will sputter and act like it is struggling to go. I have had everything checked and all other recalls fixed. When I mentioned it to the service department, they said they could replace the part but it doesn’t guarantee that it will fix the issue. He gave me a quote to fix it and said the part is on back order or may be recalled soon. If it isn’t in the process it needs to be before it takes someone’s life. When I have checked social media it appears that multiple people are having the same issue.
While driving the warning chimed with a “service shifter” message on the dashboard screen. All of the lights (P, D, N, R) were light in the shift indicator. Due to the warning message I was not able to see any other information on my dash. I wasn’t sure if I could even keep driving leading me to panic for fear that I couldn’t even put the car in park. I have a 2017 Cherokee purchased 2.5 years ago, 25.000 km and having regular service every 6 months. Just 100 km after i serviced the car, it shutdown while driving !!! The authorized service checked the car and the issue was just the battery. Generally when you have battery issue the car will not start without a jumper / booster but will not shutdown while driving at all. For Cherokee, it shutdown while driving !. Jeep service manager informed me that due to the used technology Cherokee can shutdown while driving when the battery finish (which is generally not the case in other cars). When i asked why the manufacturer didn't get any precaution for this, they mentioned that only Grand Cherokee has auxilary battery as a precaution and it is not obliged by the government and they just get some cases which is not enough to make a recall.

When I contacted the dealership, I was told it was not covered under warranty or a recall; it would cost about $400 with parts and labor to repair. While driving the service shifter light pops on
On July 3, 2021 I stopped at STOP sign, then when I stepped on the gas car wasn't moving, when I looked at the gear shift I noticed all the lights are on, all P R N D AND "-" AND "+" NEXT TO THE GEAR (PICTURE ATTACHED). Then I stopped the engine and restarted the car to move on. On July 16, 2021 I took the car for oil change and showed the picture to the mechanic at the JEEP Service Center in Morgan Hill California (on Church Street in Morgan Hill, CA). The service guy said we know this problem it is a recall, he said it is wiring harness problem for the gear, he said they will fix it when they receive the part at no cost. Then, on July 26, 2021 I went back to see if they have received the part to fix the problem This time the service guy said it is not covered, JEEP will not pay for it. Well, if it is electrical wiring harness problem why should I pay for it. Such thing is a design/manufacturing problem, it is not wear and tear. Service shifter warning. Car stalled twice. It has 45 k miles only. Won't start on first try.
My car completely cut off while driving it on 2 separate occasions on 6/14 & 6/29. I was going 15-20 mph and slowing down for a stop light both times. The car just cut off without any warning. Once I put it in park I was able to start it back up without a problem. I took it to get serviced and the shop said there were multiple faulty computer codes so they reset the system. They advised me to call the dealership to see if there is a recall. I called a dealership and there is not a recall. They told me to bring it in so they could do a diagnostic test and check the fuel system. The earliest appointment at 2 dealerships I called is a month out and if I scheduled a drop-off appointment that could be done in about 7-10 days.
SERVICE SHIFTER. The Shift Bezel keeps going out. I reading that is happening to a lot of other people only had this car 2 months. The gear shifter Bezel lights up all red and service shifter shows up on the dashboard.
Went to start my car and it didn't start. There was no cranking at all. Took it to the mechanic after jumping car. Mechanic called back few hours later. Said electrical is draing the power. Lucky I didn't loose my alternator. There was no one hurt and no sign of this happening before hand. Only the mechanic i took it too has checked it
At traffic stop light, vehicle transmission disengaged and acted as though in a neutral or park position even though shift position was in drive. Warning lights indicated "Service Shifter". Placed shifter into park and turned off engine. Restarted and placed shifter into drive. Appeared to drive normally to destination. Next engine start, warning indicator of Service Shifter returned with no apparent drive issues. Next engine start, warning indicator did NOT appear.

TOOK TO WYLER EASTGATE JEEP ON 7/16, THEY INFORMED ME THE BEZEL ON THE SHIFTER NEEDED REPLACEMENT, AND THE PART WOULD BE IN THE FOLLOWING WEEK. I HAD THEM KEEP THE CAR FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK. THE FOLLOWING WEEK THEY NOTIFIED ME IT WAS POSSIBLE THE PART WOULDN'T BE AVAILABLE UNTIL THE END OF THE JULY, BUT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY SO IT WOULDN'T COST ME ANYTHING. I HAVE SINCE FOLLOWED UP IN AUGUST AND AGAIN LAST WEEK AS THE DEALER NEVER CALLED BACK ON THE STATUS. THE LATEST CALL WAS ON 9/29 (ALMOST 3 MONTHS SINCE FIRST APPOINTMENT), AND THE PARTS DEPARTMENT CONTACT TOLD ME THAT OF THE TWO PARTS NEEDED FOR THE REPAIR, ONE WAS PLACED ON "INCREASED BACKORDER STATUS" FROM JEEP, MEANING THAT THE DEALERSHIPS WERE "BLOCKED" FROM ORDERING IT OR IT EVEN BEING SENT OUT TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY ARE NOW UNAWARE OF WHEN THE PART MIGHT BECOME AVAILABLE AGAIN. FROM THIS EXPERIENCE AND THE COMMENTS, IT SOUNDS AS THOUGH THE PART IS FAULTY, HENCE IT WON'T BE USED ON A REPAIR. SOUNDS LIKE THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUED IF THE PART IS FAULTY AND THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS IS SO WIDESPREAD, AND JEEP HASN'T ADDRESSED IT TO CONSUMERS OR DEALERS. DRIVING DOWN THE RD SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT COMES ON , THEN PULL OVER PUT CAR IN PARK THEN THE CAR JUST TURNS OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RD. YOU HAVE TO CRANK AND CRANK TO GET IT STARTED BACK WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RD. I ALMOST GOT RUN OVER ON THE HIGHWAY WHERE THE SPEED LIMIT IS 65. I'M SCARED TO DRIVE MY CAR FOR THE FEAR OF CAUSING A ACCIDENT AND GETTING KILLED. I HAVE A 8 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER THAT O TRANSPORT DAILY. ON 01/24/20, WITH 24,000 MILES, WHEN I STARTED THE CAR A SERVICE SHIFTER MESSAGE COME UP ON MY SCREEN. IT HIGHLIGHTED ALL MY GEAR LIGHTS RED AND THE SCREEN WAS LOCKED TO SERVICE SHIFTER. I TURNED THE CAR OFF, WAITED A FEW SECONDS AND THE CAR STARTED NORMALLY. HOWEVER, IN SEARCHING FOR THE ISSUE ONLINE FOUND THAT OVER A HUNDRED JEEP OWNERS HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE. SUV RECALL T52: REPROGRAM TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE WAS RESOLVED @ ROSEVILLE JEEP 05/01/18. SEVERAL JEEP OWNERS SAID THAT THE ISSUE RECURRED EVEN AFTER THEIR SHIFTER WAS REPLACED. PLEASE ESCALATE THIS ISSUE TO A RECALL AND INVESTIGATE WHAT MUST BE DONE TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE SO THAT WE ARE NOT CHARGED FOR AN ISSUE THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO RECTIFY.

THE DEALERSHIPS/SERVICE CONTINUE TO MAKE COMMENTS LIKE "WE WERE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE". TO BE SPECIFIC: DRIVING AT ABOUT 25 MILES PER HOUR, STRAIGHT FOLLOWING A RIGHT TURN. . . . LOST POWER. LIGHTS WENT ON THE DASH, MESSAGE ABOVE APPEARED. IT TOOK TWO TRIES TO RESTART TO GET ME OUT OF THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD.I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THEY HAD NO EXPLANATION FOR ME BOTH TIMES THIS HAPPENED. AS SOON AS THEY WOULD CONNECT IT TO DIAGNOSE THEY SAID THE CODES WOULD CLEAR AND THE CAR WAS WORKING. ITS A WASTE OF MONEY BECAUSE IM GOING TO GET THE SAME ANSWER. I JUST DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO NOW. SERVICE SHIFTER CAME ON ONE EVENING AND WENT OFF UPON SHUTTING THE VEHICLE DOWN AND RESTARTING IT. THE NEXT DAY WOTH NO WARNING I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY WITH MY THREE KIDS. SUDDENLY DASH FLASHED 4X4, TRACTION CONTROL, ERS, AUTO STOP ALL UNAVAILABLE AND THEN THE TRANSMISSION JUST STOPPED FUNCTIONING. I WAS IN THE FAST LANE DOING 70 MPH AND HAD NO POWER WHAT SO EVER. THE RPMS WENT UP AND I HAD NO ACCELERATION WITH THE GAS PEDAL DOWN. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SLOW LANE BUT NOT WITHOUT CAUSING A RIFT IN TRAFFIC, THANKFULLY OTHER DRIVERS WERE ALERT AROUND ME AND LET ME OVER ONCE I HIT MY FLASHERS. THE VEHICLE WAS ACTING AS IF IT WAS STUCK BETWEEN GEARS. OT WOULD ENGAGE IN R, N AND P BUT NOTHING WHEN I PUT IT IN D. CALLED A ROLLBACK AND PER DEALERSHIP EVERY CODE THAT COULD THROW HAS THROWN AND AT MY EXPENSE WE ARE STARTING WITH ENTIRE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY TO THE TUNE OF $900 PARTS AND LABOR. 5 DAYS TO GET PARTS IN! PER SERVICE MANAGER, SERVICE WRITER AND THE MECHANIC WORKING ON MY CAR THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH CHEROKEES & BETTER YET JEEP IS WELL AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND DOESN'T FIND A NEED FOR A RECALL.

I WAS POURING RAIN. AS I TOOK A RIGHT, HEARD THE CAR GO "DING" SAW THE BATTERY LIGHT COME ON AND THEN THE JEEP TURNED OFF. I WAS DRIVING AND MY CAR JUST TURNED OFF. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME. THE LAST TIME WAS JANUARY 2018 AS I WAS ENTERING I95. I TURNED LEFT AND HEARD THE "DING" AND OFF THE JEEP WENT. I HAD TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. DANGEROUS! I GOT TOWED TO THE LOCAL JEEP DEALER BY AAA AND LEFT THE CAR FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE RESULTS, ACCORDING TO THE DEALER, WAS THAT MY OIL WAS LOW. THE CHEROKEE TURNS OFF THE CAR TO PRESERVE THE ENGINE. EVEN IF YOU ARE DRIVING THE CAR ON THE HIGHWAY. JUST. TURNS. OFF. FIRST OF ALL, THAT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN NO MATTER WHAT. THE HUMAN IN THE CAR IS WHAT SHOULD BE PRESERVED, NOT THE CAR ITSELF. NO CAR SHOULD EVER JUST TURN OFF. SECOND OF ALL, THERE WAS NO INDICATION ON THE DASH OR ON THE UCONNECT APP THAT I WAS LOW ON OIL. AND SECONDLY, I WAS ONLY A 300 MILES OVER THE MILEAGE ON THE OIL STICKER ON MY WINDSHIELD. I HAVE HAD A LOT OF CARS IN MY LIFE AND EVEN THE REALLY OLD CARS WOULD INDICATE IF THE OIL WAS LOW. THIS IS A BRAND NEW CAR. WHY WOULD I THINK THE DEALERSHIP WOULD PUT MILEAGE ON THE OIL CHANGE STICKER THAT WAS WRONG? WHY WOULD I EVEN THINK THAT I WOULD NEED TO CHECK MY OIL LEVELS ON A NEW CAR? AND ONE MORE THING - JEEPS ARE BUILT TOUGH. SO WHY WOULD THE ENGINE BE THAT SENSITIVE? SO ANGRY.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT THE DEALER. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER PROMISED TO GET BACK WITH HER WITHIN TWENTY-FOUR HOURS.
