WHEN PUTTING FUEL IN THE GAS TANK, THE PUMP KICKS OFF AND GAS SPLASHES OUT LIKE THE TANK IS FULL. WE HAVE TO HOLD THE NOZZLE AND LET IT TRICKLE IN THE GAS FOR QUITE SOMETIME. IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW WE HOLD THE GAS NOZZLE OR WHAT ANGLE, IT SIMPLY SHUTS OFF THE PUMP LIKE ITS FULL, AND I'M DEALING WITH SPILT GAS ON ME AND THE GROUND! I CANNOT FILL MY TANK! AFTER SPEAKING WITH A JEEP DEALERSHIP, THEY VERIFIED IT DOES HAPPEN TO THE COMPASSES. WHAT! THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE 2012, FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. IN MY FAMILY WE OWN A 2007 JEEP COMPASS WHICH WE ARE PLEASED TO OWN. HOWEVER, LAST YEAR (2018) WE FOUND THAT IT WAS SPITTING GASOLINE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR AFTER WE FINISHED PUMPING IT. IT LOOKED LIKE THE CAR WAS PUMPING THE GAS BACK TO US WITHOUT WE EVEN TURNING THE CAR ON. AT THE BEGINNING I COULD NOT PUMP ENOUGH GASOLINE INTO THE FUEL TANK. IT STOPPED UNEXPECTEDLY AND SPIT THE FUEL OUT, WITH ENOUGH FORCE AND QUANTITY TO FILL THE CAP COMPARTMENT AND NOTABLY REACHING THE FLOOR. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THREE FOR THE SAME ISSUE AND THEY CHANGED A COUPLE OF PARTS AND PARTIALLY SOLVED THE PROBLEM IN FEBRUARY 2019. PARTIALLY BECAUSE WHEN WE FILLED THE TANK FULL, IT CAUSED THE ENGINE TO TURN OFF WITHIN 5 MINUTES OF FUELING. HOWEVER, IN JUNE 2019, WE FOUND THAT THE CAR WAS AGAIN SPITTING GAS OUT WHEN WE FILL THE TANK TO FULL. AGAIN, WITH ENOUGH FORCE AND QUANTITY TO FILL THE CAP COMPARTMENT AND NOTABLY REACHING THE FLOOR. THEREFORE, WE DECIDED TO MAKE THIS SAFETY COMPLAIN BECAUSE NOT ONLY MY FAMILY IS IN HIGH DANGER BUT ALSO EVERY PERSON AT A GAS STATION WHERE WE FILL WITH GASOLINE. MOREOVER, IT IS CONCERNING THAT A CAR DEVELOPS THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM BY ITSELF AND JEEP DOES NOT SEEM TO HAVE A DEFINED SOLUTION FOR THIS MATTER.

OUR 2007 JEEP COMPASS HAS BEEN STALLING COMPLETELY (ENGINE SHUTS OFF) SHORTLY AFTER WE FILL UP THE GAS TANK. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR AROUND ONE YEAR. WE WERE ENCOURAGED TO FILE THIS REPORT AFTER CORRESPONDING ONLINE WITH OTHER JEEP OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCED THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE.

WHEN I FILL UP THE GAS TANK ON MY 2007 JEEP COMPASS IT STALLS SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE NEXT FEW MILES. I'VE READ THE BLOGS ON THE WEB AND IT APPEARS TO BE A FAILURE OF THE FUEL TANK ROLLOVER VAVLE. THE ONLY FIX APPARENTLY IS TO REPLACE THE GAS TANK AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $1,2000. I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR FOR MY 16 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND IT HAS STOPPED ON HER IN TRAFFIC TWICE AFTER FILLING UP THE TANK. LUCKILY SHE ESCAPED BEING HIT BY AN ONCOMING CAR. THIS IS SO WRONG! THIS IS A DEFECT AND A RECALL NEEDS TO BE ESTABLISHED TO FIX THIS ISSUE.

AFTER FILLING THE FUEL TANK THIS VEHICLE WILL STALL. THIS HAPPENS ROUTINELY FOLLOWING A FUEL TANK FILL-UP AND IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. THERE ARE MANY CONCERNS ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB OF JEEP COMPASS AND PATRIOT OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE WITHOUT RESOLVE. MANY PEOPLE ARE SUGGESTING THAT THE GAS TANK, CHARCOAL FILTER AND ROLL-OVER VALVE NEED TO BE REPLACED TO RESOLVE, WHICH COMES AT A PRICE OF $2000+ PER VEHICLE. GENERALLY, THE ENGINE WILL STALL IF IDLING AT A STOP LIGHT AFTER FILLUP. THE ENGINE DOES NOT STALL IF THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING ABOVE 25-30 MILES PER HOUR. THE ENGINE STARTS RIGHT BACK UP WITHOUT PROBLEM, BUT WILL CONTINUE TO STALL. AFTER VEHICLE HAS BEEN DRIVEN A FEW MILES, THE STALLING ISSUE DISAPPEARS ENTIRELY.

THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES, AS WELL AS TO THE NEIGHBORNING JEEP DEALER. TIME AFTER TIME I WAS ADVISED THE ISSUE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. TODAY UPON REFUELING THE CAR STALLED UPON LEAVING THE GAS STATION AGAIN. THERE APPEARS TO BE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS AND RESEARCH ONLINE THAT I WAS SHOCKED TO LEARN A RECALL HAD NOT BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE. THE STALLING OCCURS AT A DIFFERENT TIME LEAVING NO GAS STATION, AT THE FIRST MOMENT OF IDLING, AFTER TRAVELING A SHORT DISTANCE. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN FOR ANY DRIVER ALTHOUGH EXTREMELY SO FOR A NEWLY LICENSED DRIVER.

IF IT DOESN'T COMPLETELY SHUT OFF THE SENSATION TO CUT OFF IS DEFINITELY FELT. I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT IT WAS THE SPARK PLUGS AND HAD THOSE REPLACED, HOWEVER, THE SITUATION CONTINUES TO PERSIST. I HAVE BEEN TOLD ON ONE OR MORE OCCASIONS IT MAY BE THE FUEL PUMP. I WAS RECOMMENDED I TAKE MY VEHICLE DIRECTLY TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE OTHER ISSUE THAT IS ALSO VERY PRONOUNCED IS THE NOISE MY ENGINE MAKES WHILE IDLING. IT CAN BEST DESCRIBED AS A LOUD WHIRLING SOUND BUT NOT QUITE A RATTLE. I HAVE NEVER HEARD MY CAR SOUND SO NOISY. I HAVE NOTICED PERHAPS IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS COME ON INVOLUNTARILY WITHOUT ME ENGAGING THEIR USE. I HAVE SEARCHED JEEP'S WEBSITE REGARDING ANY RECALL INFORMATION ON THESE AFOREMENTIONED ISSUES BUT TO NO AVAIL.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL CAP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE FLUSHED AND A TUNE UP WAS NEEDED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. ON ANOTHER OCCASION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION HESITATED TO SHIFT GEARS AND WAS JERKING AS IF IT WAS GOING TO STALL. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED ON 6/30/13. THE FAILURE RECURRED AND IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE OXYGEN SENSORS AND THE O2 HARNESS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER ON 1/14/16 WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 131,483.

PLUS CAR LOOSES POWER STEERING. 2ND TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS NEXT TANK FILL UP AND STALLED BEFORE LEAVING GAS STATION. AFRAID TO DRIVE AND HAVE PARKED CAR. ROLL OVER VALVE IS NOT WORKING (STUCK OPEN?). IF CAR WAS IN ROLL OVER ACCIDENT, FIRE COULD RESULT FROM SPILLING FUEL. AFRAID WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IF PULLING ONTO HIGHWAY FROM RAMP AND STALL IN FRONT OF 18 WHEELER.

CROSS MEMBER-NOTICED WHILE DRIVING AND TOOK 2 WEEKS BEFORE DEALERSHIP COULD GET MY APPOINTMENT RIGHT TO GET IT TAKEN CARE OF SINCE IT WAS RECALLED 7. TIPM IS GOING. LOST POWER TO 2/2 OUTLETS IN THE VEHICLE. 8. CV AXLE IS GOING. SOUNDS REALLY BAD AND SOUNDS LIKE BOTH PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDE. TREATED THIS VEHICLE WITH LOTS OF CARE AND SO DID PREVIOUS OWNER. THIS TELLS ME THIS IS NOT A RELIABLE VEHICLE AND A SAFE VEHICLE I CAN DRIVE MY DAUGHTER IN.

AFTER REFUELING, VEHICLE STARTS UP AND DRIVES AS NORMAL FOR A SHORT TIME UNTIL REACHING THE FIRST STOP OR STOPLIGHT, AT WHICH POINT THE ENGINE RETURNS TO IDLE. THE ENGINE WILL BEGIN TO SPUTTER/WEAKEN (FULL FOOT ON THE GAS BUT REACTS AS IF IT IS ONLY DOWN 1/4 OF THE WAY), THE OIL LIGHT TURNS ON, AND THEN SUBSEQUENTLY DIES WHILE STILL IN DRIVE. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 5 TIMES SINCE THIS FIRST OCCURRED ON JAN. 31, 2015. EVERY TIME IT OCCURS, IT IS IMMEDIATELY AFTER REFUELING, DESPITE USING DIFFERENT GAS STATIONS AND BRANDS. FIRST EVEN OCCURRED WHILE I WAS TURNING LEFT FROM A LIGHT INTO ANOTHER PARKING LOT. (SPUTTER, THEN DIED) ANOTHER EVENT WAS WHILE I WAS IDLING AT A RED LIGHT. (ENGINE COMPLETELY DIED) THE MOST RECENT EVENT OCCURRED WHILE I WAS DRIVING 45 MPH DOWN THE ROAD, AND IT BEGAN TO SPUTTER AND WEAKEN AFTER THEN MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN, UPON WHICH I PULLED THE CAR OVER IN THE ROAD, TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND THEN BACK ON AGAIN. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS IF I HAD BEEN ON A HIGHWAY.

WHILE DRIVING ON I-30 AT 70 MPH, MY JEEP JUST DIED. NO WARNING SIGN OF ANY KIND, JUST COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN, WHICH ALMOST CAUSED SEVERAL WRECKS. I GOT TO THE MEDIAN, WAITED ABOUT 10 MINUTES, IT STARTED AND I DROVE ABOUT 20 MORE MILES, THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN. WE BOUGHT OUR JEEP COMPASS IN JANUARY 2007. APPROX. DATE FOR THIS PROBLEM IS SEPT 2011. OUR JEEP STARTED ACTING LIKE IT WAS GOING TO STALL WHEN STOPPED AT A LIGHT OR WHEN IN MOTION. AT OTHER TIMES, IT WOULDN'T START AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS. MOST TIMES IT WOULD START. ONE DAY IT DID NOT START AT ALL AND WE DECIDED TO TAKE IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY. THAT MORNING, IT STARTED, BUT WE STILL TOOK IT IN. THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON ALSO. WE TOLD THEM WE THINK ITS THE BATTERY BECAUSE WE HAD ISSUES WITH THAT ALREADY (BATTERY REPLACED IN 2010 AND AGAIN IN, I THINK, 2011, SOMETHING IN THE JEEP WAS DRAINING THE BATTERY). LONG BEACH CA DEALERSHIP. I THINK THEY CHARGED US A FEE TO HOOK IT UP TO THE COMPUTER, THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM, AND SAID IT WAS NOT THE BATTERY. THEY SAID IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN, TO BRING IT BACK. OVER THE PAST YEAR, THE STALLING INCREASED AND THE JEEP WAS NOT STARTING CORRECTLY. AUG 1, 2012, APPROX. MILEAGE 104,000, WE TRIED TO START OUR JEEP, AND IT WOULDN'T START AT ALL. WE HAD IT TOWED TO BILOXI MS DEALERSHIP AND WE TOLD THEM THIS HAD HAPPENED BEFORE. THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AGAIN AND ANOTHER LIGHT I CANT REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS FOR. THEY HOOKED IT UP TO THEIR COMPUTER AND IT TOLD THEM IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP. THEY PROCEEDED TO START TO REPLACE IT, BUT, BEFORE THEY DID, THEY CAME TO US AND HAD US LOOK AT THE CONNECTOR SWITCH FOR THE FUEL PUMP. IT HAD MELTED, HAD BURNS ON IT, AND HAD MELTED THROUGH THE PUMP. WHY THIS IS NOT A SAFETY RECALL IS BEYOND ME WHEN I SEE OTHERS HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM! THE MECHANIC SAID WE WERE LUCKY THIS THING HAD NOT CAUGHT ON FIRE WHILE WE WERE DRIVING IT!! AND EVEN MORE DISTURBING, THE FUEL PUMP IS LOCATED UNDER THE BACKSEAT!
