The contact owns a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled inadvertently. The vehicle was able to restart immediately on some occasions and restarted after a while on other occasions. There was no warning light illuminated. Several independent mechanics replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump and installed an unknown computer software on the vehicle; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

THE RECALL INDICATES THAT VEHICLES WITHOUT A HITCH WILL HAVE A HITCH INSTALLED BY THE DEALER OR IF A HITCH WAS INSTALLED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS SOLD THEN CHRYSLER WILL PROVIDE REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE COST. I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE # N45/NHTSA 13V-252. THIS NOTICE EXPLAINS THAT THE FUEL TANK ON MY VEHICLE HAS A CHANCE OF EXPERIENCING A FUEL LEAK DURING CERTAIN TYPES OF REAR END COLLISIONS. CHRYSLER IS SUPPOSED TO INSPECT MY VEHICLE AND INSTALL AN ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER (OEM) TRAILER HITCH WHERE APPROPRIATE, FREE OF CHARGE ( PARTS AND LABOR ). MY CAR DOES NOT HAVE A TRAILER HITCH SO THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE. I HAVE CALLED THE LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALER IN MY AREA - ROCKLAND CHRYSLER JEEP ON ROUTE 304 IN NANUET, NEW YORK 10954 - SEVERAL TIMES. FIRST CALL WHEN I RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE - SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, I WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS NOTHING FOR ME TO DO AT THIS TIME, SOMEONE WOULD CONTACT ME. NO ONE EVER DID. I CALLED THE CHRYSLER GROUP RECALL ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1 800 853 1403; I GAVE THEM MY VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER AND ASKED FOR AN UPDATE ON THE RECALL AS I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY HAZARD TO ME AND MY FAMILY. I WAS TOLD THAT MY INFORMATION WAS NOTED AND I SHOULD BE HEARING FROM THE LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALER. I AM STILL WAITING. SEVERAL WEEKS PASSED, NO ONE FROM THE LOCAL DEALER OR CHRYSLER CORP. CONTACTED ME. I CALLED ROCKLAND CHRYSLER AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR MY CAR TO BE INSPECTED BY THEIR TECHNICIANS. I FURTHER REQUESTED THAT THE SAFETY CONCERN NOTED IN THIS RECALL BE DOCUMENTED BY ROCKLAND CHRYSLER. I WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE THE CAR WITH THEM FOR SEVERAL HOURS BECAUSE THE INSPECTION WAS SOMEWHAT INVOLVED. TWO DAYS BEFORE MY APPOINTMENT, ROCKLAND CHRYSLER CALLED AND TOLD ME THEY HAD TO CANCEL MY APPOINTMENT BECAUSE THE PARTS WERE ON BACK ORDER. THE FUEL TANK HAS TWO STRUCTURAL STRAPS TO ENSURE THE TANK IS SAFELY ATTACHED TO THE FRAME. ASSUMING BOTH STRAPS ARE FABRICATED TO THE SAME SPECIFICATIONS BOTH SHOULD BE IN, MORE OR LESS, THE SAME CONDITION AS THEY ARE LOCATED NEXT TO EACH AND EXPERIENCE THE SAME LEVEL OF WEAR AND TEAR. MY VEHICLE HAS ONE STRAP THAT IS IN FINE CONDITION. THE SECOND STRAP HAS RUSTED THROUGH AND NO LONGER PROVIDES THE DESIGNED SUPPORT FOR THE FUEL TANK. CHRYSLER'S POSITION IS THIS IS DUE TO WEAR AND TEAR AND REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE DISPARITY BETWEEN THE CONDITION OF EACH STRAP. CHRYSLER HAS HAD ISSUES WITH THESE STRAPS. I BELIEVE IT CAN BE REASONABLY ASSUMED THAT CHRYSLER IS CULPABLE AND SHOULD REPLACE THE DETERIORATED STRAP AT THEIR COST GIVEN THE RISK ASSOCIATED WITH THE CONDITION. INFAMOUS STALLING PROBLEM. WHETHER GOING 10 MPH OR 70 MPH, VEHICLE WILL STALL WITH NO WARNING. GENERALLY WILL RE-START AFTER TURNING OFF IGNITION, BUT NOT ALWAYS IMMEDIATELY. ON MY JEEP, I HAVE REPLACED THE COMPUTER MODULE, CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR, FUEL PUMP, FUEL FILTERS, MAF SENSOR, DISTRIBUTOR CAP, ROTOR, PLUGS AND PLUG WIRES. I HAVE HAD THE COMPUTER MODULE WIRING HARNESS REWORKED. STILL STALLS, AND I HAVE BEEN FORCED TO PARK THE JEEP FOR SAFETY REASONS. *TR

EVERY TIME I FILL UP MY 96 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO AT A GAS STATION I NEED TO PUMP IT IN SLOWLY AND MANUALLY. THE NOZZLE, IF SET ON HIGH OR LOW IMMEDIATELY CLICKS OFF. IF IT DOES NOT SHUT OFF, IT SPEWS FUEL OUT OF THE FILLER. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS. THIS HAPPENS REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH FUEL IS IN THE TANK BEFORE I START THE FILLING PROCESS. PUMPING THE FUEL MYSELF IS GETTING OLD. I LIVE IN NJ WHERE THE CUSTOMER IS TECHNICALLY NOT ALLOWED TO DO THIS AS OUR STATIONS ARE FULL SERVICE AND THIS MUST BE DONE BY AN ATTENDANT. FORTUNATELY, I GO TO THE SAME STATION AND THEY ARE USED TO ME DOING IT MYSELF. OTHERWISE THE ATTENDANT HAS TO BABYSIT THE NOZZLE AND PUMP IT IN SLOWER THAN THE SLOW SETTING. JUST OVER A YEAR AGO, MY 1996 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO ENCOUNTERED A DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP. AS I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF PROCURING A REPLACEMENT PUMP, A FRIEND TOLD ME TO CHECK FOR RECALLS/TSB'S ON IT AS HE HAD EXPERIENCED MANY FUEL PUMP PROBLEMS WITH THESE. THERE WERE, I BELIEVE TWO TSB'S INVOLVING MY VEHICLE SO I CALLED CHRYSLER. THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP TO DETERMINE IF THE PROBLEM WAS THE PUMP. I TOLD HER I HAD ALREADY DONE THAT. SHE TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD TO DETERMINE IT AND IF IT WAS THE PUMP, CHRYSLER WOULD COVER THE REPAIR. CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AWARE OF THE DELAMINATION PROBLEM WHICH CAUSES PARTICLES TO CLOG THE FILTER AND INCREASE PRESSURE CAUSING THE PUMPS TO FAIL. JEEP IS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD WHEN FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED, A/C IS DRAINING WATER INSIDE THE PASSESNGER, RIGHT REAR, CARPET.
AT 40000 MILES VEHICLE WAS AT A STOP IN PARK, CONSUMER THEN PUT VEHICLE IN REVERSE, AND VEHICLE DID NOT MOVE. LESS THAN A MINUTE LATER, VEHICLE SUDDENLY WENT BACKWARD. GEAR INDICATOR SHOWED IT WAS IN REVERSE. DEALER SUGGESTED CONSUMER MIGHT HAVE HAD VEHICLE SERVICED, AND WRONG TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS USED. SINCE THEN, THIS HAPPENED AT LEAST 4 MORE TIMES, ALSO, ONCE VEHICLE WAS PUT IN DRIVE FROM PARK, AND IT TOOK ABOUT A MINUTE BEFORE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD. GEAR SELECTOR ALSO SHOWED IT WAS IN DRIVE. DEALER COULD NOT REMEDY.*AK FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY AND FUEL TANK WAS REPLACED, VEHICLE WOULD CRANK, BUT WOULD NOT START. *SLC

SINCE 1998 I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH MY JEEP STRANDING ME DUE TO A FUEL PUMP FAILURE. I HAD MY JEEP TOWED NOW 5 TIMES FOR THIS PROBLEM. WHEN THE DEALER FINALLY GETS THE TIME, A DAY OR TWO LATER THE JEEP WOULD START. THEN AGAIN IN TWO WEEKS THE SAME PROBLEM WOULD OCCUR. AND THEY TELL ME THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. CAR WENT INTO REVERSE WHEN PARKED "PARK" REVERSED INTO A TREE DOWN THE DRIVEWAY AT ABOUT 10 MPH. THERE WAS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE REAR END. IT WAS THIS TIME THAT I LOOKED AT THE GEAR SHIFT AND NOTED THAT IT HAD MOVED FROM THE PARK POSITION TO A PLACE JUST ABOVE THE R FOR REVERSE BUT INDEED WAS IN REVERSE! MY BODY SHOP PERSON HAD INFORMED ME OF ANOTHER JEEP OWNER WHO WAS PINNED AGAINST HIS GARAGE DOOR WHEN HIS JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE WENT FROM PARK INTO REVERSE. I CAN GET HIM TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THIS ORGANIZATION. THE DEALERS RESPONSE TO ME WAS "I PROPBABLY DID NOT HAVE IT IN GEAR PROPERLY AND DID I HAVE THE PARKING BRAKE ON?" BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY.....I SURE PUT IT ON NOW AND CHECK IT DOUBLE BUT SURE DON'T TRUST IT ENOUGH TO IDLE IN PARK......ALTHOUGH AFTER DRIVING FOR 35 YEARS I HAVE NEVER HAD THE PROBLEM WITH OTHER CARS OR TRUCKS! THE FUEL PUMP HAD EVIDENTLY BEEN A PROBLEM FOR THEM AS THE DEALER SAID THAT THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL FAILURES "BUT NO RECALL" THE PUMP HAS TO BE REPLACED BY FACTORY PART AT $500 PLUS DOLLARS WITH AN ADDITIONAL $700.00 FOR LABOR TO INSTALL "AND EVEN THEN, WE CAN'T GUARANTEE IT BUT FOR 6 MONTHS!
