THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V054000 (AIR BAGS) AND STATED THAT THE PART NEEDED WAS UNAVAILABLE TO PERFORM THE RECALL REPAIR. WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT MY JEEP STARTED TO ACCELERATE AND, EVEN WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL FULLY DEPRESSED, SURGED FORWARD. THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES IN THE PAST WEEK BOTH AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND AT STOP SIGNS, ALWAYS WHILE STOPPED. THE RPMS HAVE INCREASED TO BETWEEN 1,500 AND 4,500. THE JEEP DEALER ATTEMPTED TO FIX IT ON TUESDAY, HOWEVER THE PROBLEM RE-OCCURRED ON MY WAY HOME AND AGAIN WITH A MECHANIC IN THE VEHICLE WHEN I BROUGHT IT BACK. TO DATE, THE CAR IS STILL AT THE DEALER AND HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. *TR

SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION AND LOSS OF BRAKING WHILE DRIVING IN PARKING LOTS. WHEN DRIVING AT SLOW SPEED IN PARKING LOT, TURNED RIGHT TO PULL INTO PARKING SPACE. GAVE ACCELERATOR A SLIGHT PUSH TO GIVE CHEROKEE ENOUGH GAS TO MOVE INTO UPHILL PARKING STALL. QUICKLY MOVED FOOT FROM ACCELERATOR TO BRAKE PEDAL, WHEN CAR MOTOR REVVED, SPEED INCREASED AND FRONT END OF CAR HIT CONCRETE RETAINING WALL. BRAKING UNABLE TO STOP OR SLOW THE CAR BEFORE IMPACT. SECOND INCIDENT ON 11/12/2011 WITH APPROXIMATELY 78,000 MILES DRIVEN WHEN DRIVING AT SLOW SPEED THROUGH PARKING LOT, TURNING RIGHT TO DRIVE DOWN PARKING LANE, PLACED FOOT ON BRAKE PEDAL TO SLOW EVEN MORE TO MOVE FURTHER TO RIGHT SIDE OF LANE TO AVOID ONCOMING CAR. WITH SIDE OF FOOT, FELT ACCELERATOR PEDAL DROP AWAY CAUSING MOTOR TO REV, SPEED TO INCREASE. LEFT FRONT BUMPER HIT LEFT FENDER OF ONCOMING CAR AND RIGHT FRONT FENDER HIT BACK BUMPER OF PARKED TRUCK. I OWN A 2003 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LIMITED WITH 16,168 MILES. MY DRIVING PATTERN FOR THE PAST YEAR HAS BEEN WITHIN DOWNTOWN CITY LIMITS AND CONNECTING FREEWAYS WHERE SPEEDS OVER 50 MILES PER HOUR ARE RARE DUE TO TRAFFIC CONGESTION. ON A RECENT INTERSTATE TRIP WHEN I APPLY THE BRAKES AT SPEEDS ABOVE 45 MPH THEY PULSATED AND THE FRONT END WOULD SHAKE VIOLENTLY EACH TIME THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A JEEP DEALER FOR AN INSPECTION. THE CAR HAD WARPED FRONT BRAKE ROTORS. PRIOR TO PROCEEDING WITH THE REPAIR I CONTACTED DAIMLER CHRYSLER TO AUTHORIZE THE REPAIR AT THEIR COST AS THE PROBLEM IS A KNOWN DESIGN/MANUFACTURING DEFECT AFFECTING 1999 THROUGH 2004 GRAND CHEROKEES. AFTER OVER AN HOUR ON THE, PHONE THEY AUTHORIZED REPLACEMENT ROTORS AS A GOODWILL REPAIR ALBEIT WITH THE ORIGINAL DEFECTIVE ROTOR DESIGN. I LEARNED FROM THE DEALER SERVICE REP THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAS REPLACED THE ROTORS IN ABOUT FOUR THOUSAND 1999 -2004 MODEL GRAND CHEROKEES. THIS IS ESSENTIALLY A 100% FAILURE RATE. ANY ABNORMAL BRAKE OPERATION IS A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE. STOPPING DISTANCE WILL BE INCREASED BY COMPROMISED INEFFICIENCY OF THE WARPED ROTOR AGAINST THE DISC. FROM A HUMAN FACTOR STANDPOINT THE DRIVER IS DISTRACTED AT A CRITICAL POINT IN BRINGING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. INSTINCT MAY CAUSE THE DRIVER TO EASE OFF THE BRAKES TO REDUCE THE VIBRATION THEREBY RISKING A COLLISION OR LOSS OF CONTROL AND VEER INTO OPPOSING TRAFFIC. I UNDERSTAND FROM THE DEALER THERE IS AN AFTER-MARKET FIX TO THE FACTORY ROTORS. DAIMLER CHRYSLER SHOULD ON THEIR OWN PROVIDED AN ENGINEERING CHANGE TO EXISTING REPLACEMENT ROTORS TO CORRECT THE HEAT PROBLEM AND IN THE ABSENCE OF SUCH THE NHTSA SHOULD TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION. ON 03-19-04 I TOOK MY JEEP FOR REPAIR BECAUSE THE BRAKES WERE PULSATING. ON 07-12-04 I MADE A RETURN VISIT BECAUSE THE BRAKES WERE PULSATING AGAIN. ON 04-13-05 I RETURN BECAUSE THE BRAKES WERE PULSATING AGAIN. THE THIRD TRIP TO SALERNO DUANE CAME NINE MONTHS LATER, ON APRIL 13, 2005 AT 22,731 MILES. AGAIN, SERVICE ADVISOR REPORTED THAT THE FRONT ROTORS WERE ROUGH AND WERE RESURFACED. WHEN ASKED IF THIS WORK WOULD BE COVERED BY A WARRANTY AS WELL, WHICH WAS OBVIOUSLY NECESSARY DUE TO PAST EXPERIENCE, MANAGER SAID SHE BELIEVED IT WOULD BE. WHEN I REQUESTED DOCUMENTATION AS PROOF TO THAT STATEMENT, SHE REFUSED. I THEN ASKED TO SPEAK TO THE SERVICE MANAGER, A MR. G WHO WAS, LESS THAN PROFESSIONAL IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT, JUST PLAIN RUDE IS MORE ACCURATE. HE REFUSED TO WARRANTY THE WORK THAT HAD BEEN DONE ON MY VEHICLE STATING THE PROBLEM WAS NOT SALERNO DUANE, BUT POSSIBLY A CHRYSLER DEFECT. AS OF APRIL 2006 I AM EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM OF MY BRAKES PULSATING. I PHONED SALERNO DUANE ON APRIL 5, 2006 AND SPOKE TO SERVICE MANAGER AND SHE INFORMED ME THE WORK WILL NOT BE WARRANTED AND I WILL BE CHARGED FOR THE REPAIRS. BEING THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM I FEEL THAT THIS REPAIR SHOULD BE THE CAR DEALER RESPONSIBILITY. I AM AFRAID TO CONTINUE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE FOR I FEEL IT IS VERY UNSAFE FOR MY FAMILY AND FOR OTHER MOTORIST AND PEDESTRIANS ON THE ROAD. THE ROTORS WARPED BECAUSE OF HEAT BUILD UP DURING BRAKING,AND THE DEALER REPLACED THEM WITH VENTED ROTORS TO AVOID THIS IN THE FUTURE. PADS AND ALL OTHER BRAKE COMPONENTS WERE FINE. WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES AT HIGH SPEED THE VEHICLE WOULD SHAKE AND VIBRATE VIOLENTLY. AT LOW SPEEDS USING THE BRAKES THE VEHICLE WOULD PULSATE SLOWLY FORWARD WHILE REMOVING PRESSURE FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE CONDITIONS CONTINUED TO GET WORSE ESPECIALLY THE VIBRATIONS AND SHAKING AT HIGH SPEED BRAKING. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AT 19,000 (ROUGHLY) WHERE THEY PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THAT THE ROTORS WERE SEVERELY WARPED AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH THE PADS. I ASKED WHY THEY ARE WARPED BEYOND SERVICEABILITY AND THEY STATED THIS IS A KNOW PROBLEM. I WROTE TO DIAMLERCHRYSLER AS WELL TRYING TO GET SOME TYPE OF REFUND BACK AFTER SPENDING $550 ON THE PARTS AND LABOR FOR SOMETHING THAT I FEEL WAS A QUALITY ISSUE TO BEGIN WITH. THEY STATED ROTORS WARP DUE TO VARIOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. I DISAGREE, IT IS POOR QUALITY MATERIALS BEING USED. THEY WILL LOSE MY BUSINESS OVER THIS. THE REASON I BOUGHT A NEW VEHICLE WAS TO AVOID COSTLY REPAIRS FOR A FEW YEARS. *NM

HAD FRONT ROTORS RESURFACED 2 TIMES AND REPLACED 1 TIME, ALL OCCURED UNDER 20,000 MILES. AT 21,000 MILES THE REAR ROTORS WHERE RESURFACED AND NOW I HAVE TO RETURN TO THE SERVICE CENTER FOR THE FIFTH TIME WITH 23000 MILES ON MY VEHICLE BRAKES ARE PULSATING AGAIN. FOUND THAT THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN THAT WAS ISSUED ON DEC.02 REGARDING FRONT BRAKES PULSATING DURING LIGHT TO MODERATE BRAKE APPLICATION FOR 1999 TO 2002 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEES. THIS IS DUE TO EXCESSIVE THICKNESS VARIATION OF THE BRAKE ROTORS. OBVIOUSLY THIS PROBLEM STILL EXISTS IN 2003 MODELS AND DAIMLERCHYRSLER STILL REFUSES TO FIX THE PROBLEM AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER.

NOW VEHICLE HAS 24,000 MILES, IT SHAKES WHEN BRAKING AGAIN AT HIGH SPEEDS AND DEALER STATES IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. THEY MAY OR MAY NOT REPAIR THE BRAKES THIS TIME. BRAKE ROTORS SHOULD NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED EVERY 9,000 MILES. THE EXCESSIVE SHAKING CAUSED BY THE DEFECTIVE BRAKE SYSTEM COULD CAUSE SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY TO OCCUPANTS OF THE VEHICLE OR OTHERS WHO ARE ON THE ROAD.

I OWN A 2003 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LIMITED, WHICH I PURCHASED BRAND NEW, AND I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT BRAKES AND ROTORS AT LEAST FOUR TO FIVE TIMES. THE CAR ONLY HAS 43,000 MILES ON IT AND IT IS NOW IN NEED OF NEW FRONT BRAKES AND ROTORS AGAIN. EVERY TIME THE BRAKES HAVE BEEN REPLACED, THEY HAVE BEEN DONE AT NO COST EXCEPT FOR THE LAST TIME. WE HAD TO PAY FOR THE PARTS AND THE DEALER PAID FOR THE SERVICE. THE DEALER AT THAT POINT ADVISED US THAT WE WERE ON OUR OWN AFTER THAT. NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE HAVE BEEN GREATLY INCONVENIENCED BY THIS AND DON'T FEEL THAT IT IS FAIR TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE BRAKES AND ROTORS SO OFTEN AFTER NORMAL USE. FURTHERMORE, WE FEEL THAT THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW WITH THE VEHICLE AND WE HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THEY CAN'T DO MUCH ABOUT THIS AND THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND THAT CHRYSLER HASN'T STEPPED UP TO THE PLATE TO DO ANYTHING. WE HAD A 2002 MODEL AND THE DEALERSHIP TOLD US THAT THAT AFTER REPLACING THE ROTORS TWICE, ON THIS VEHICLE, THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH JEEP AND WAS DUE TO THE POOR QUALITY OF MATERIAL USED IN THE ROTORS THAT CAUSE THEM TO WARP. THERE IS EITHER A DESIGN OR MANUFACTURING DEFECT IN THE BRAKE ROTORS/CALIPERS OF THE RECENT JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. THE BRAKE ROTORS HAVE BEEN REPLACED ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS IN THE FIRST 18 MONTHS (JULY 2003, DEC. 2003, JUNE 2004), AND I HAVE JUST BEEN INFORMED BY THE DEALER, ON FEBRUARY 10, 2005, THAT THE BRAKE PADS ARE THIN AND THE FRONT ROTORS ARE RUSTED AND WARPED AND NEED REPLACEMENT AGAIN. THIS WILL BE THE FOURTH TIME, AND MY CAR PRESENTLY HAS 28,000 MILES ON IT. IT IS A 2003 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE THAT I PURCHASED IN OCTOBER 2002 FROM CENTRAL AUTO GROUP IN NORWOOD, MASSACHUSETTS. THE WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER FUTURE REPAIRS, AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE MANUFACTURER, DAIMLER CHRYSLER THAT THERE IS NOTHING IT CAN DO BUT THAT I WILL NEED TO HAVE THE ROTORS REPLACED AT MY OWN COST. I HAVE MADE 4 TRIPS TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOR A PROBLEM WITH MY BRAKES. THE CAR SHAKES WHEN PRESSURE IS GENTLY APPLIED TO THE BRAKES. THE DEALER HAS DONE NOTHING EXCEPT REPLACING THE ROTORS AND THE GEAR BOX. THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN SOLVED. ALSO, THE CAR MAKES A LOUD KLUNKING NOISE WHEN THE CAR IS PUT INTO REVERSE OR TAKEN OUT OF REVERSE. ONCE AGAIN, THE DEALER SAYS IT IS NORMALLY, DEPSITE THE FACT ANY NORMAL PERSON COULD TELL SOMETHING IS DEFINETLY WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION. *JB

WHEN BRAKING VEHICLE AND THE STEERING WHEEL PULSATED. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHERE THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE FRONT ROTORS WERE WARPED. THE MECHANIC SHAVED THE ROTORS TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. *AK *MR

MY 2003 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE HAS WARPED BRAKE ROTORS AT 27,000 MILES, AND FROM EVERY THING I HAVE READ ON THIS CAR I SUSPECT IT IS NOT THE FIRST TIME SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR AT 16,000 MILES. THESE BRAKE ROTORS ARE DEFECTIVE, AND VERY DANGEROUS IN MY OPINION. WHAT DO YOU THINK? *JB

I HAVE HAD MY JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE FOR LEASE THAN A YEAR, MY 4TH SET OF FRONT ROTORS ARE WARPED. FIRST SET REPLACED AT 11K MI, 2ND AT 23K AND NOW AT 31K THE DEALER SAYS THEY ARE OUT OF WARRANTY. I ASKED HOW COME I CAN'T EVEN GET 12K ON ROTORS AND THEY SAY MY DRIVING IS BAD, I'M GOING TO COMPLAIN TO JEEP, I'M ALMOST READY TO DUMP THIS CAR AND NEVER BUY A DAIMLER CHRYSLER AGAIN. *JB

I HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME, MY SISTER AND I PURCHASED 2, 2003 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE'S, WE BOTH HAVE AROUND 18,000 MILES AND EACH TIME WE BRING OUR VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR AN OIL CHANGE THE ROTORS EITHER NEED TO BE REFACED OR REPLACED. THIS IS CRAZY AND DRIVES US UP A WALL. IT IS TERRIBLE TO DRIVE WHEN THE VEHICLE PULSATES AND SHAKES. JUST LAST WEEK THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED ALL THE ROTORS BECAUSE THEY WERE SO WARPED. THIS WAS THE THIRD COMPLAINT IN A YEAR AND THEY SAID THAT THE ROTORS WERE NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY AND THAT MY DRIVING IS DAMAGING THEM. SO I SAID COULD IT BE A PROBLEM THAT JEEP IS HAVING AND THEY SAID NO, I THEN SAID WELL THAN WHY DOES MY SISTER HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH HER VEHICLE AND THEY SAID WELL SHE NEEDS TO SLOW DOWN TOO! THIS IS CRAZY THERE IS A HISTORY OF THIS PROBLEM AND IT SHOULD BE RESOLVED I KNOW IN THE PAST JEEP'S HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH ROTORS, DOES THE 2003 HAVE A HISTORY OF THIS? *AK

I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN FOR THE ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AT THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASE THE VEHICLE. AFTER THAT DAY, THE VEHICLE VIBRATES TO THE POINT YOU CANNOT PLAY A CD. THEY ARE TELLING ME THIS IS HOW THE VEHICLE PERFORMS. I HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP MANY TIMES WITH THE SAME RESPONSE. I ALSO HAVE TAKEN IT TO OTHER CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP WITH THE SAME ANSWER, IT SEEMS THAT THE ANSWER IS THE SAME AFTER THEY LOOK AT THE REPAIR HISTORY. I ALSO HAVE MET WITH THE CHRYSLER MARKETING REP TWICE, AND THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT THE CHRYSLER TECHNICAL REP DROVE THE VEHICLE. YET WHEN I REQUESTED A ENCOUNTER WITH HIM THEY DECLAIM AND SAID THERE IS NO TECHNICAL REP. I ALSO MET WITH THE GENERAL MANAGER FROM THE DEALERSHIP TWICE, SALES MANAGER MANY TIMES, I NEED THIS TO BE LOOK INTO BECAUSE I THINK MY VEHICLE WAS TAMPERED WITH, BECAUSE IF IT WAS RUNNING LIKE THIS WHEN I BOUGHT IT I WOULD HAVE NOT BOUGHT IT. THE VIBRATION IS GETTING WORST. I DO HAVE A EXTENDED WARRANTY, THAT I CANNOT USE BECAUSE THEY REFUSE TO EVEN LOOK AT THE VEHICLE. THEIR SOLUTION WAS TO SELL ME ANOTHER VEHICLE, WHICH I DECLINED BECAUSE THEY WANTED MORE MONEY DOWN. WHY SHOULD I BUY ANOTHER VEHICLE WHEN I HAVE A NEW ONE THAT THEY DESTROYED.

WHEN BRAKING, THE PEDAL FELT SOFT AND INTERMITTENTLY THE DRIVER WOULD SIMULTANEOUSLY APPLY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO LURCH FORWARD. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE. NOTHING WAS SAID CONCERNING THE BRAKE AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BEING TOO CLOSE. *PH THE DEALER VERIFIED THAT THE 2003 MODELS HAD SOFTER BRAKE PEDAL THAN THE PREVIOUS YEAR MODELS. THE PEDAL WAS SO LOW THAT IT WAS EASY TO HIT THE GAS PEDAL. *SCC *JB
