On November 6, 2025 at 11:59 AM, the active head restraint on my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited deployed without impact as I adjusted the driver’s seat into an upright position. This was a spontaneous mechanical deployment inside the cabin of a stationary vehicle. The dealership confirmed this as a known failure involving the internal plastic retaining clip that holds the deployment pin. This defect was previously covered under a 10-year extended warranty that expired in November 2024. At the time of the incident, I was alone in the vehicle. I later sought medical evaluation for head, neck, shoulder, and lower back pain and was diagnosed with a cervical strain. Because this failure occurs without collision, it presents a serious risk of injury to drivers and passengers. I regularly spend time with elderly individuals in personal, non-commercial contexts and occasionally transport others in my personal vehicle. In such a population, an in-cabin mechanical deployment of this force could cause catastrophic injury. The manufacturer and warranty programs have declined to assist with repair due to expiration despite acknowledging this as a known defect. Estimated repair cost is approximately $1,000. Was getting ready to go to town, opened back seat for daughter to get into vehicle, and all of a sudden the front seat headrest popped out. Was very scary. Thankfully no one was in the front seat when it happened. I could only imagine there would have been some pain/injury sustained if they were. There were no warnings. No other malfunctions. Headrest is not able to be "clicked" back into place as a bracket is broken inside. There has not been any investigation by manufacturer, police or insurance reps.

We were driving this weekend and the headrest components failed and blew it apart. It shoved my husbands head forward really hard. We pulled over and tried to fix it but all the pieces are snapped inside of it. From our understanding that is a safety feature that is supposed to happen in a crash but we were not in a crash, just doing 55 mph down the road. It was not inspected by anyone yet but from reading online forums this seems to be a common occurrence.

The contact did not sustain any injury. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that the headrest was no longer covered under warranty, and the headrest replacement would be at the owner’s expense. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 155,000.

The headrests activator failed on the driver’s seat and hit me in the back of the head. I was driving about 35mph. This vehicle has never been in an accident. A week later the same thing happened in the passenger seat to a passenger. Upon inspection the plastic failed that secures the latch-pin. We were never notified about this problem!

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at approximately 35 MPH, the driver’s side seat headrest unexpectedly deployed from the seat. The contact was not injured. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed and the contact was informed that the headrest needed to be replaced. The contact spoke with a second dealer, McMahon Motors Broward (720 N State Rd 7, Plantation, FL 33317); who confirmed that the headrest needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired because the vehicle was no longer covered under recall or warranty. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the VIN was not under recall. The failure mileage was 115,000.

The driver's side active head restraint deployed without warning striking me in the back of the head, fortunately not hard enough to seriously injure me, but hard enough to cause a headache. I had just gotten into the vehicle to drive to work, so it wasn't even moving. There are broken pieces of plastic that apparently used to hold it closed. My vehicle has no uncompleted recalls, but now looking at my vehicle information online I've discovered that there was a "warranty extension" in 2020 regarding a possible failure exactly like this, and I've also discovered there were lawsuits following reports of injuries! Chrysler never notified me, nor did the Jeep dealer bring it to my attention during any of my routine service appointments. Why wasn't this a RECALL requiring repair instead of left to be a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off??? Adding insult to injury, the warranty extension to 10 years after the in-service date in 2013 doesn't cover repairs today! The passenger side restraint hasn't popped open (yet!) but I'm not stupid enough to wait until it fails and injures a family member, so now I have to replace BOTH sides and PAY for both out of my pocket. Please make this a RECALL so Chrysler will have even a slight urgency to notify owners, and hopefully decide to replace the head rests immediately, regardless of how old they are.

-The passenger seat head rest popped open (exploded - it was super loud) when in the process of backing up out of my driveway. - The safety of everyone in the car was put at risk. My husband was in the seat and was hit in the back of the head. My son, his wife and their 2 month old daughter was in the back seat. - The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by anyone. It just happend last night. - It has not been inspected yet either. - There was no indication of any issue with the head rest. There was no collision or problem prior to the rest rest popping open (or exploding, seriously).

In fact, they notified owners that if you hadn't had a problem then you're okay. No need to do anything. The headrest restraint in the driver's seat spontaneously deployed hitting the back of my head while I was driving. It is available for inspection. The deployment was startling/surprising - quite a distraction - my impulse was to turn around to see what hit me - it wasn't readily apparent until I re-oriented my body in the seat and found my headrest had moved forward making it uncomfortable to drive. A web search indicated other Jeep/Durango owners have experienced this - some are attempting to "reset" the headrest on their own. A call to Chrysler/Jeep customer care confirmed that the warranty on this item had been extended to 14 Mar 2023 - no recall. I was not notified to my knowledge. They declined to help me. The vehicle has not been inspected. There were no leading indications of a failure, nor is there an indication currently, other than the headrest is split open and it is uncomfortable to drive. Why has a safety device that has obviously failed in multiple cases and was known to the manufacturer not become a recall?! This is irresponsible! The dealer indicated there is no means to repair this - a replacement headrest. In light of the cost of "repair" it is no wonder owners are trying to fix this on their own.

I was driving down the freeway when I felt my headrest strike the back of my head. This caused a momentary distraction as my head was pushed forward and the back of my head was struck. The headrest component of the safety restraint system deployed. It is available for inspection upon request. The dealership inspected and said this is a known problem but they would not cover the repair as it fell outside of their warranty period which ended 10/2023. Issue could have caused an accident and possibly caused injury to myself or my children had I been driving when system activated. While driving the vehicle the headrest deployed striking the driver in the back of the head. Action happened while turning onto a residential street. Driver stopped to access the damage. Driver sustained a headache from impact. Headrest will not reset. If system deployed while driving down the highway it could have resulted in traffic accident. Concern for the owner as subject has severe spinal issues and impact could result in fatal damage. There is no codes visible at this time.

After a month the head of the seat of the passenger were broke in the same way. They were open and broke and expose the interior of the head seat noticed the plastic pin support broken.,06

The Active Headrest Restraint (AHR) busted open with the broken clip issue and cannot be fixed without a dealership replacement. The car is available for inspection. This was not the result of an accident or collision, as the car was parked. If I were sitting in the seat, it most likely would have given me a concussion or a hospital visit. Since the AHR is supposed to reduce the occurrence of whiplash in the event of a collision, I am now at increased risk of whiplash if something were to happen. Multiple reports claim it has caused injury, and I am now worried for my passengers if their headrest was to also pop out. As of 2023, the NHTSA has received nearly 500 complaints of headrests bursting open, with at least 71 of them involving injury. The vehicle has not yet been inspected, but will need to be taken to a dealership and paid to be fixed since there is no recall at this time, and I expect a costly repair. There were no previous warnings or indications that this would happen. This is a dangerous situation, and I am scared to drive my car in fear of my headrest not working properly in the event of a FUTURE COLLISION, and am now scared the headrest on the passenger side will bust open and injure someone else. In a proposed class action lawsuit, "65-page complaint states the defect can be traced back to the failure of a “cheap plastic component” inside the AHRs that are unable to withstand the 75 pounds of constant pressure applied by the AHRs springs. The plaintiffs claim this 'cost-saving measure' puts the AHRs at risk of failure and vehicle occupants at risk of injury." Here is a link to a perfectly good summary of this issue. Front Passenger side Head Rest broke apart, looks like a plastic piece or lock mechanism broke on the headrest causing it to break apart and I cannot push it back together and re-lock it. This happened while driving down the road with no external factors at play.

While driving normally, the passenger headrest violently shot open. Plastic clips which once held a metal rod inside the headrest can be seen stressed and broken, causing the active head restraint (AHR) systems to deploy. Several independent websites and forums show this is a known issue but there has not been a recall. There were no warning signs of an issue until this point.

Luckily no one was sitting in the passenger seat however this could have caused serious injury of death had the seat been occupied. Upon further investigation by myself I noticed that the metal retention bar was still in place however the plastics that is supposed to secure the bar to the mechanism the bar has broken

This happened to me today. I was driving and heard a really loud pop/ rattle noise (almost took me off the road it was so abrupt) and thought maybe it was something that hit my car on the road. Sound nearly took me off the road. I pulled over and after inspection I noticed the driver headrest had deployed and the clip is broke. This seems like a SERIOUS safety hazard. It is available for inspection upon request. The headrest has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representative or others as it just happened today. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure.

While highway driving at 62 mph the passengers seat head rest suddenly blew apart with a loud bang, This scared both my wife and I as it was totally unexpected. We found ourselves looking all around trying to figure out what had happened. This was a totally dangerous distraction.There were no bumps in the road or any indication that would of caused the problem. Upon inspection it looks like a small plastic piece holding a metal pin broke. It has not been taken to a dealer yet. It is available for inspection, but I hope to get it fixed shortly.

My passenger side headrest deployed randomly while my girlfriend was in the seat. She currently has a headache, we are looking into this further and what steps should be taken. Vehicle was driving maybe 10 mph when this took place. I understand this design for deployment is supposed to take place during an accident to protect the passenger from whiplash. Again, this incident took place randomly (no accident) A plastic clip broke off, causing the headrest to spring and deploy. This is a dangerous safety design flaw and Jeep should have a recall for this component. There were NO warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The Active Head Restraint system, which is integrated into the headrest unexpectedly deployed while I was safely operating the vehicle on the highway. The impact to the back of my head caused a concussion. The vehicle was not involved in a collision or other kind of accident that would trigger the system to deploy. After parking the vehicle and inspecting the headrest, it was observed that several plastic fastening components failed causing the unintended deployment of the system. It was also observed that the plastic around the metal fastening pin had failed. Internet research shows that this is a known problem with Fiat Chrysler automobiles. A Federal investigation is ongoing relating to this issue. Further, there is a class action lawsuit in the state of California.

While driving my vehicle on an interstate, I felt something hit the back of my head against my hairclip. Once stopped at a light, I tried to adjust my power seat thinking that it had somehow readjusted itself (I have been waiting over 6 months for a new PCM and lots of little power gremlins have shown up with the engine and other systems). When that did not help the issue, I reached to my headrest to see if I could adjust it when I realized that it had popped open. There was no incident/accident to cause this.

The driver's side headrest exploded forward when no one was in it. 10/12/21 the Jeep was taken to the Buffalo airport. Early Afternoon, 10/13/21 it was picked up. When the car was picked up, it was found with the headrest exploded. After close inspection of the car, no damage was found to indicate a collision had happened. The safety of others is an issue because it inhibits the driver from properly seeing the road after it exploded. The problem is being solved by our own mechanic. No inspection has been made by any authorities or insurance reps. No warning lights, messages or symptoms were observed before the headrest exploded. You can see pictures attached.

Driver head restraint for 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee deployed while sitting at the airport between July 13, 2021 and July 18th 2021. Car was not in motion. Took car to Jeep dealership for inspection and replacement. It was determined by the dealership "Internal latch will not reset and hold properly". Head restraint was replaced with a new one. Mileage was 89,883. No warning messages or symptoms. Dealership stated they could not replace the passenger head restraint until it also "fails".

Sitting in the driver seat parked. The active headrest suddenly deployed . No collision detetected and the latch is still holding the release pin in place, no chassis codes showing deployment. Upon furthur investigation the plastic brackets holding the pin on either side seemed to have broken as if the plastic had aged or was under to much stress. Thankfully i was leaning forward enough that it barely hit the back of my head and the cushioning absorbed much of the impact pressure.

Front passenger active headrestraint defective. Headrest activated erroneously when plastic brackets holding steel bar broke. This caused the headrest to forcefully extend/deploy forward. Driver side headrest was not affected. Steel bar remained captured in claw which would have released steel bar if vehicle should be rear ended thus causing active headrestraint to engage (note: vehicle was not hit in this case). Should this occur with passenger in seat or to driver side while vehicle in motion it can cause an accident or injury to seat occupant.

May 3,2021 while driving on Route 93 south I drove over a rough patch on the road as soon as I felt the bump in the road I heard a very loud pop. I pulled into a gas station and inspected my car that's when I discovered the passenger headrest deployed, fortunatley I was alone at the time. No one was hurt.

While driving, I heard a loud explosion, and my head/ neck jerked forward to the steering wheel. I immediately thought someone hit me from the back. My daughter in the passenger seat shouted, “Are you Ok?” She told me that the back head rest exploded. I was shaking and tears filled my eyes as I pulled over to the side of the road. The driver’s headrest deployed for NO reason! I was so lucky that this did not cause a major accident! That evening (and for the next 4-5 days), I had a headache and lower neck pain. Today, it still feels sore. Even though the dealer fixed it, the salesmanager could not confirm if the new head restraint had the same faulty parts inside. My daughter is 15 1/2…She is scared to death of learning to drive in my Jeep. She witnessed the restraint deploying, and doesn’t want that to happen to her. Me either! At approximately 2:00 PM, on January 17, 2021, my wife was sitting in the front passenger seat of our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit waiting for me so that we can drive to Columbus, GA for my brother's funeral. Then, for no reason at all, the headrest of the passenger popped open. My wife screamed because she thought someone was hiding in the back seat and had smacked her on the back of her head. We don't know why it happened but would like for it to be fixed by Jeep. A replacement headset was estimated to cost about $1000.00.

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at 30 mph, the front passenger’s side active headrest restraint fractured and detached, hitting the contact's wife on the head. There was no impact to the vehicle that could have caused the active headrest restraint to become detached. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 68,013.

While driving home all of a sudden there was a loud pop and instantly hit in the back of the head WHILE driving. Instant headache and throbbing to the back of my skull. I pulled over as soon as I could to see that my driver side headrest had deployed. Further inspection it appears the plastic inside the head rest is broken so it can not be reset. This is an extreme safety issue! Just driving down the same road we've driven on multiple times to be hit in the back of the head while driving. If my wife was driving I am not sure how that would have turned out as she already has neck issues. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AS THE COST IS TOO HIGH. THE CONSUMER STILL DRIVES THE VEHICLE.

I need to bring it to dealer to get fixed I suppose and also pay for it I believe, but this seems to be a safety issue and a defect - not something I should have to pay for.

WE STAYED IN THE REST OF THE DAY SO SHE COULD LAY DOWN. NOT SURE IF A TELESCOPING HEADREST WAS A FEATURE, I DID A WEB SEARCH TO SEE WHAT THE ISSUE WAS. I READ ABOUT THE 'EXPLODING HEADREST', A TERM THAT DESCRIBES WHAT IT WAS LIKE. LOOKING AT THE INSIDE OF THE HEADREST, I CAN SEE THE BROKEN PLASTIC TABS THAT WERE DESCRIBED BY OTHERS. I ASSUMED THIS WOULD BE A RECALL ITEM, BUT WAS DISAPPOINTED TO LEARN IT WAS NOT. AFTER CALLING THE DEALER, WE WERE GIVEN AN ESTIMATE OF $850 TO REPLACE IT. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A BAD DESIGN AND SHOULD BE REPLACED AS A RECALL FIX. WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY NOW SO WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT EXTENDED.

DOING RESEARCH ONLINE, I FOUND THAT THIS ACTIVE HEAD REST (AHR) TRIM IS SUPPOSED TO COMPRESS A SPRING AND CLIP ONTO METAL ANCHOR. BUT THIS PLASTIC IS SHEARED OFF. OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT COMMENCING FOR THIS ISSUE. MY WIFE NOW CANNOT SAFELY DRIVE HER VEHICLE DUE TO HEADREST SPONTANEOUS FAILURE. HOW IS SHE SUPPOSED TO USE HER VEHICLE?

I WAS SHOCKED BY THE INCIDENT AND REALIZED HOW LUCKY I WAS THAT I HAD NOT BEEN DRIVING, AS THIS SURELY COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. AT THAT POINT, THE CAR WAS VIRTUALLY UNDRIVEABLE AS IT PUSHED MY HEAD SO FAR FORWARD. I WAS SHOCKED WHEN I CALLED THE DEALER TO HEAR THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THIS DEFECTIVE SITUATION. I THEN REALIZED MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, AND YET CHRYSLER HAS DONE NOTHING TO RECALL THIS. I THINK THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, MADE WORSE BY THE FACT THAT THEY OBVIOUSLY KNOW THIS AND STILL ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING TO REMEDY IT.

HEADREST DETACHMENT TWICE. THE HEADREST ON THE PASSENGER SEAT DETACHED DURING PARKING, WHEN I WAS LIVING IN INDIANA IN 2017. THE SECOND DETACHMENT IS ON MY DRIVER SIDE HEADREST. IT DETACHED DURING PARKING IN 2019 SEPTEMBER. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO CHAPMAN DODGE CHRYSLER JEEP IN SCOTTSDALE, AZ. THE STAFF THERE TOLD ME THE ISSUE WAS A DESIGNING PROBLEM OF GRAND CHEROKEE. THEY USED A PLASTIC PART IN HEADREST. IT IS WEAK AND CAN BREAK OFF ANYTIME. THEY SAID IF I FIX MY DRIVER SEAT HEADREST USING THE SAME PLASTICS, IT CAN STILL EASILY BREAK SIMPLY BECAUSE THE PLASTIC THING IS TOO FRAGILE. THE STAFF TOLD ME CHRYSLER MIGHT RECALL IT VERY SOON AND SO I KEEP WAITING. IT'S BEEN NOVEMBER 2020 AND STILL NO RECALL. I WANT CHRYSLER TO FIX THE PROBLEM COMPLETELY. I DO NOT WANT TO USE ANOTHER WEAK PLASTIC PART THAT CAN RANDOMLY DETACH ANYTIME. IF THE DETACHMENT OCCURS WHEN I AM DRIVING 70+ MPH, CERTAINLY IT WILL KILL ME AND SOMEONE ELSE. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE PASSENGER SIDE ACTIVE HEADREST SYSTEM DEPLOYED. UPON EXAMINING IT APPEARS THAT THE PLASTIC STRUCTURE THAT HOLDS THE PIN IN PLACE ON BOTH ENDS FAILED ON THE END CLOSEST TO THE MIDDLE OF THE CAR. THE 'CLIP' WHICH HOLDS THE PIN AND WOULD RELEASE IT IN AN ACCIDENT WAS STILL HOLDING ONTO THE PIN. THERE WAS A PASSENGER IN THE SEAN, HOW FORTUNATELY HAD HIS HEAD FORWARD INCIDENTALLY WHEN THE DEPLOYMENT OCCURRED AND WAS NOT STRUCK.

MY 2014 GC ALTITUDE HAD THE DRIVERS SIDE ACTIVE HEAD RESTRAINTS HEADREST RANDOMLY DEPLOY AS NO PART OF A COLLISION THIS PAST WEEKEND. THIS IS NOT ONLY A MAJOR SAFETY RISK FOR THE PASSENGER BUT, COULD HAVE BEEN QUITE TRAUMATIC SHOULD THE RANDOM DEPLOYMENT HAVE CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT. I HAVE SPENT WAY TOO MUCH TIME RESEARCHING AND THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM IS ONE OF PLASTIC FAILURE. LOOK INSIDE THE HEAD REST FOR THE SMALL METAL, HORIZONTAL PIN AND IF IT IS STILL HELD IN PLACE BY THE METAL RETAINING HOOKS THEN THE PLASTIC FAILED IN THE HEADREST. NHTSA HAS HAD AN INVESTIGATION OPENED ON IT FOR A YEAR NOW BUT, I DON'T THINK THERE HAS BEEN ANY MOVEMENT ON IT SINCE LATE LAST YEAR AS THE MANUFACTURER STALLS FOR TIME. I HOPE THIS WILL RESULT IN A RECALL AT SOME POINT IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE BEFORE MORE PEOPLE ARE INJURED.

UPON INSPECTION OF THE HEADREST, I CAN SEE WHERE PLASTIC CLIPS LOOK TO HAVE BROKEN OFF. PICTURES OF THIS ARE ATTACHED. I WOULD REQUEST THE NHTSA TO TAKE A LOOK INTO THESE REPORTS AS I'VE SEEN THEY'RE COMMON. I WORRY NOW THAT MY WIFE'S DRIVERS SIDE WILL DEPLOY ON HER AT RANDOM WHILE SHE IS DRIVING CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. WHILE DRIVING (MOTION) ON HIGHWAY 378 - LEXINGTON, SC - 2/14/20, THE PASSENGER SEAT POPPED OUT UNEXPECTEDLY, LUCKILY NO ONE WAS SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AT THE TIME. I'M WORRIED THIS WILL HAPPEN WITH MY DRIVER'S HEAD SEAT AT THIS TIME. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET IT FIXED AND THEY SAID WOULD COST ME $700, SINCE MY WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED. I CALLED CHRYSLER/JEEP CUSTOMER SERVICE AND FILED A CLAIM FOR THEM TO WAIVE THE $700 FEE. THEY TOLD ME THAT SINCE I WAS THE (2ND) OWNER NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND THAT MY WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED THEY DENIED MY CLAIM. I TOLD THEM WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR THERE HAVE BEEN NO WRECKS RECORDED ON THE VEHICLE AT ALL, THIS WAS CRAZY TO ME, THAT THEY WOULDN'T FIX MY PASSENGER HEAD SEAT. I FILED THE CLAIM ON 2/28/20 @ 1-800-992-1997. I WAS AT THE CHRYSLER/JEEP DEALERSHIP LOCATED IN COLUMBIA, SC.

A KNOWN ISSUE BY FCA, IS THAT THE FORCED UPDATE FAILS DURING THE UPDATE RENDERING CERTAIN FEATURES USELESS. IN MY ENCOUNTER THE SYSTEM UPDATE FAILED AND MOST ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS WERE NOT FUNCTIONAL SUCH AS DEFROSTER, CONTROL OF THE POWER SEATS, THE VEHICLES LIGHTING SYSTEMS AMONG OTHER SYSTEMS. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND FCA IS AWARE OF THIS FAILURE YET THEY HAVE FAILED TO NOTIFY CONSUMERS OF SUCH FAILURE AND HOW IT COULD ADVERSELY EFFECT THEIR CONTROL AND ACCESS TO FUNCTION OF THE MOTOR VEHICLE WHILE IN OPERATION.

NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE DID NOT DRIVE MY JEEP THE REST OF THE WEEKEND. I GOOGLED THIS ISSUE AND I AM SHOCKED AT ALL OF THE ONLINE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS TYPE OF HEADREST AND YET, IT FAILS TO BE A RECALL. IF MY SON WOULD HAVE BEEN DRIVING, HE COULD HAVE WRECKED, POTENTIALLY KILLING HIMSELF, MY DAUGHTER AND ME. ALL OF THE PEOPLE POSTING THEIR COMPLAINTS ONLINE SAID JEEP IS NOT COVERING THIS ISSUE, AND CUSTOMERS ARE HAVING TO PAY ANYWHERE FROM $600-$1025 FOR THE REPAIR. THIS IS A FACT. I TOOK MY JEEP TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY WERE GOING TO CHARGE ME $1,017 TO FIX. THIS IS NOT AN APPROPRIATE WAY TO TREAT LOYAL JEEP CUSTOMERS. THIS IS THE SIXTH JEEP I HAVE OWNED. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE FCA AND FOLLOWED-UP WITH A PHONE CALL SEVERAL DAYS LATER. FORTUNATELY, THE FCA AGREED TO REPLACE BOTH OF MY HEADREST AT NO COST TO ME. THE DEALERSHIP HAS ORDERED THE PARTS AND I PLAN TO GET THE NEW ONES INSTALLED NEXT WEEK. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL AND THE MANUFACTURERS OF THE HEADREST NEED TO MAKE THIS RIGHT. THE RESULT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE. SHE HAD HEADACHES, NECK PAIN ,VOMITING AND LOSS OF SLEEP FOR TWO WEEKS. I HAVE CALLED AND E-MAILED CHRYSLER AND THEY OPENED UP A CASE. CHRYSLER SENT OUT A INSPECTOR TO INSPECT OUR JEEP AT THE JEEP DEALERSHIP. THIS ACTIVE HEADREST DEPLOYING IS VERY DANGEROUS. THIS HAS CAUSED SERIOUS INJURIES. LUCKILY I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY INJURIES FROM THE SMACK TO MY HEAD & ALSO WAS STILL ABLE TO MAINTAIN MY LANE OF THE HIGHWAY EVEN THOUGH IT SCARED ME TO DEATH. I THEN TOOK IT INTO MY LOCAL JEEP DEALERSHIP WHERE I WAS GREETED WITH A $679 BILL FOR A NEW HEADREST AND INFORMED THAT SINCE THERE IS NO RECALL I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR IT. I'M APPALLED THAT THIS IS ACCEPTABLE AND DEEMED SAFE. IN WHAT WAY IS A SPORADIC SMACK TO THE HEAD WHILE DRIVING SAFE? LET ALONE PAYING $679 FOR THAT SMACK TO THE HEAD. THERE HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS OF THIS HAPPENING YET NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. CHRYSLER VEHICLES CONTAIN A CRITICAL SAFETY DEFECT INVOLVING THE MATERIALS USED IN ITS ACTIVE HEAD RESTRAINT (AHR) SYSTEM. THE AHR SYSTEMS ARE INTENDED TO QUICKLY MOVE FORWARD IN THE EVENT OF A REAR END COLLISION, RESTRAINING AND PROTECTING THE PASSENGER'S HEAD TO PREVENT WHIPLASH. THE AHR HEADRESTS ARE PRONE TO DEPLOY ABRUPTLY, EVEN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING OPERATED UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. WHEN THIS DEPLOYMENT OCCURS, THE HEADREST SPRINGS FORWARD, STRIKING THE DRIVER/PASSENGER IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD UNEXPECTEDLY. NOT ONLY DOES THIS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE SERIOUS HEAD INJURIES TO THE DRIVER/PASSENGER OF THE VEHICLE, THE DEFECTIVE HEADREST POSES A SIGNIFICANT PUBLIC SAFETY RISK IF IT OCCURS WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE ON A HIGHWAY OR BUSY STREET. INSPECTIONS OF THE DEFECTIVE HEADRESTS SHOW THAT INFERIOR PLASTIC THAT IS PRONE TO CRACKING WAS USED FOR A CRITICAL BRACKET IN THE AHR SYSTEM. THERE IS NO WAY TO DETERMINE WHEN AND IF THE BRACKET WILL FAIL, CAUSING THE HEADREST TO DEPLOY AND SPRING FORWARD WITHOUT WARNING.

I CALLED MY LOCAL JEEP DEALERSHIP THAT FOLLOWING MONDAY TO INQUIRE ABOUT REPAIRING THE HEADREST. BECAUSE MY CAR IS OUTSIDE OF ITS WARRANTY, THE PARTS AND LABOR WOULD COST ME $1000. THE SERVICES SPEACIALIST AT THE DEALERSHIP THEN SUGGESTED TO ME THAT I SHOULD GET IN A LITTLE "FENDER BENDER" AND HAVE THE HEADREST REPAIRED UNDER MY INSURANCE COVERAGE (ALSO KNOWN AS INSURANCE FRAUD). I FIND IT APPALING THAT A FLAW IN THEIR DESIGN, WHICH COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT (IMAGINE IF MY DRIVER'S SIDE HEADREST ALL OF A SUDDEN DEPLOYS WHILE I'M DRIVING??), IS NOT BEING MANAGED BY THE CAR MAKER, AND INSTEAD, ACCEPTS THE MONEY FOR THE REPAIRS ANY WAY THEY CAN GET IT. THE ACTIVE HEAD REST DEPLOYED WHILE WE WERE PARKED AND EATING TACO BELL AFTER DRIVING THROUGH THE DRIVE THROUGH. MY GIRLFRIEND AND I HAD PARKED THE JEEP AND BEGAN EATING SOME TACOS. WHILE PARKED, I HEARD A POP SOUND LIKE AN EXPLOSION. IT SOUNDED LIKE A PISTOL HAD BEEN SHOT OFF NEAR MY VEHICLE, I EVEN DUCKED FOR COVER TO ANTICIPATE THE POSSIBILITY OF MORE SHOTS, THEN I REALIZED MY GIRLFRIEND WAS INJURED. SHE HAD BEEN HIT IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD. NOT BY A GUNSHOT BUT BY MY JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE'S (LIMITED 4X4 3.6L V6 2014) ACTIVE HEAD REST SAFETY SYSTEM HAD DEPLOYED WHILE PARKED AND STRUCK HER IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD WHILE WE ATE FOOD IN THE PARKING LOT. MY GIRLFRIEND IS [XXX] AND SHE HAS SINCE SEEN A DOCTOR AND MISSED TIME OFF OF WORK OVER THE INJURY AND PAIN RESULTING FROM THIS DEFECTIVE HEADREST. AFTER READING THAT THERE HAVE BEEN OVER 150 COMPLAINTS OF THIS OCCURRING ALREADY, JEEP, CHRYSLER, DODGE, IS WELL AWARE OF THIS AND THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING TO MAKE ITS OWNERS AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THEY SHOULD BE RECALLING THIS IMMEDIATELY AND THEY KNOW IT. BUT BECAUSE THE DEVICE CANNOT BE REASSEMBLED AFTERWARDS AND MUST BE REPLACED ENTIRELY (COST FOR THE HEADREST ALONE IS ABOUT $800) AND THERE'S TWO PER VEHICLE (AT A MINIMUM) WHICH WOULD RESULT IN JEEP HAVING TO SPEND A GREAT DEAL OF ADDITIONAL TIME AND RESOURCES INCLUDING THE MOST IMPORTANT TO THEM - MONEY. SO BECAUSE JEEP DIDN'T WANT TO ACCOUNT FOR A SMALL DEDUCTION IN THEIR 1.6 BILLION DOLLARS IN PRE-TAX ANNUAL PROFITS, MY GIRLFRIEND AND I HAVE HAD TO SUFFER INSTEAD. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS ACCIDENT AND JUST IMAGINE IF I WERE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN IT DEPLOYED AND STRUCK ME I WOULD BE A DEAD MAN FOR SURE AND THERE MAY BE OTHERS AS WELL. THE HEADREST ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT "DEPLOYED" WHILE I WAS DRIVING. THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO DEPLOY DURING A REAR IMPACT COLLISION. THERE WAS NOT A COLLISION OR ANY OTHER IMPACT. I WAS IN THE CAR ALONE COMING TO A ROUTINE STOP. SUDDENLY HEARD THIS LOUD NOISE AND THE HEADREST HAD DEPLOYED. I DIDN'T KNOW I HAD THIS "SAFETY" FEATURE IN MY CAR. HAD THAT HAPPENED TO THE DRIVERS SEAT WHILE AT SPEED, IT COULD CAUSE ME TO LOSE CONTROL AS THE IMPACT TO THE BACK OF MY HEAD WOULD CERTAINLY BE A MAJOR DISTRACTION IF NOT CAUSE A CONCUSSION. I'M GETTING THE PASSENGER SEAT FIXED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT FCA SHOULD ALSO FIX THE DRIVERS SEAT TO PREVENT INJURY.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,000.

I WAS DRIVING ON I25 IN DENVER AND WHEN I WAS JUST GETTING OFF THE EXIT RAMP I HIT A VERY SMALL BUMP AND I HEARD A LOUD NOISE. I COULDN'T TELL IF IT WAS INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE AT FIRST. I LOOKED OVER AND WAS SURPRISED TO SEE THAT THE PASSENGER HEADREST HAD DEPLOYED ITS MECHANISM TO MOVE PART OF IT FORWARD TO LESSEN THE AFFECT OF WHIPLASH FROM AN ACCIDENT. IT WAS A STARTLING NOISE AND I WONDERED WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF A FAMILY MEMBER WOULD HAVE BEEN IN THAT SEAT AND BEEN HIT IN THE HEAD BY THE HEADREST. EVEN MORE OF A CONCERN WOULD BE IF THE DEPLOYMENT WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE DRIVER SIDE. WHO KNOWS WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I HAD BEEN STARTLED BY GETTING HIT IN HEAD AT HIGHWAY SPEED. I NOW DRIVE THE CAR WITH THE SEAT ADJUSTED AT ABOUT A 60 DEGREE ANGLE TO AVOID THAT SCENARIO. I WAS SHOCKED TO FIND OUT FROM FCA THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR SUCH A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I COMPLAINED TO THEM AND THEY ARE NOT STANDING BEHIND THE SAFETY OF THEIR VEHICLES. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN 2017 AS A CERTIFIED PREOWNED VEHICLE AND THAT PROGRAM WOULDN'T COVER THE REPAIR OF THE VEHICLE EITHER. THE DEALERSHIP WANTS TO CHARGE ME $1,000 TO FIX IT BUT THEY CAN'T GET A NEW HEADREST BECAUSE IT IS BACK ORDERED. OBVIOUSLY THIS IS BECAUSE IT IS HAPPENING TO OTHER JEEP OWNERS. I ALSO SAW ON A JEEP BLOG THAT THIS IS HAPPENING TO OTHERS. WHEN I CALLED THE JEEP DEALERSHIP THEY TOLD ME IF THE 'CLIPS' WERE BROKEN THAT THE HEADREST NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I AM SHOCKED THAT A 'SAFETY FEATURE ' MALFUNCTIONING IS A PROBLEM THAT I NEED TO PAY TO FIX. (ABOUT $680 FOR A REPLACEMENT PLUS LABOR COST) THIS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS CRASH AND INJURIES. THIS STYLE HEADREST NEEDS TO BANNED. ALSO OTHER JEEP OWNERS NEED TO BE AWARE OF THIS. IT'S VERY UNSAFE AND JEEP NEEDS TO REPLACE THE HEADREST WITH A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SAFER HEADREST. I FEAR NOW THAT WHEN I'M DRIVING THAT THE DRIVER SIDE HEADREST COULD MALFUNCTION AND EXPLODE AT THE BACK OF MY HEAD RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURIES. IVE TALKED TO OTHER JEEP OWNERS WITH THE SAME STYLE VEHICLE AND NONE OF THEM WERE AWARE OF THIS 'SAFETY FEATURE' WITH THE HEADREST. IF THIS HAPPENS WHEN SOMEONE IS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD SOMEONE COULD BE FATALLY INJURED AND SOMEONE ELSE COULD BE INJURED AS WELL POSSIBLY IN ANOTHER VEHICLE. MY LOCAL JEEP DEALER MILTON RUBEN NOR JEEP CUSTOMER SERVICE WILL WORK WITH ME ON THE COST OF REPAIR. DEALER QUOTED $755+ TO REPLACE. NOTE: THERE ARE REPORTS OF SAME ISSUE WHEN SEARCHED ON THE INTERNET. FAILURE OF THIS DEVICE COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT IF FAILURE HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING. FRONT PASSENGER ACTIVE HEAD RESTRAINT DEPLOYED SPONTANEOUSLY OVERNIGHT WITH CAR PARKED IN DRIVEWAY. WEATHER WAS COOL, THERE WAS NO IMPACT TO ANY PART OF THE CAR, NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED, THE DRIVER SIDE HEAD RESTRAINT DID NOT DEPLOY. BROKEN PLASTIC HOOKS IN THE DEPLOYED HEADREST MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO RESET THE DEPLOYED HEADREST. IF THIS SPONTANEOUS DEPLOYMENT HAD HAPPENED WHILE THE CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN IT WOULD CLEARLY HAVE CAUSED A DANGEROUS DISTRACTION. IF THE DRIVER SIDE HEADREST DEPLOYS SPONTANEOUSLY WHILE THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN IT WOULD CAUSE A VERY DANGEROUS DISTRACTION AND POSSIBLY INJURY TO THE DRIVER MOST LIKELY RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT OR COLLISION. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS SITUATION ON THE INTERNET AND I HAVE IDENTIFIED MULTIPLE SIMILAR SPONTANEOUS DEPLOYMENTS DUE TO MATERIAL FATIGUE REPORTED ON FORUMS, WITH NO EFFORT BY FIAT CHRYSLER TO REMEDIATE THE PROBLEM. MY LOCAL JEEP DEALER REFUSES TO REPLACE THE HEADREST AS MY JEEP IS OUT OF WARRANTY. IN MY OPINION, THIS REPRESENTS A DESIGN FLAW IN THE ACTIVE HEADREST THAT COULD RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH IF THE DEPLOYMENT WERE TO HAPPEN WHILE THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN.

I WAS COMING TO A GRADUAL STOP AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT ON A LOCAL ROAD WHEN THE ACTIVE HEAD RESTRAINT SEEMINGLY DEPLOYED. I WAS NOT IN A COLLISION AND THERE WAS NO REASON FOR IT TO DEPLOY. UPON EXAMINING THE MECHANISM IT WAS NOT TRIGGERED, RATHER IT FAILED BECAUSE THE PLASTIC CLIPS THAT HELD ONTO THE LATCH HAD BROKEN OFF INTERNALLY CAUSING THE HEADREST TO HIT ME VIOLENTLY IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN FAR WORSE HAD I NOT BEEN ALMOST AT A COMPLETE STOP.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO RYDELL CHRYSLER DEALER (700 SAN FERNANDO RD, SAN FERNANDO, CA 91340, PHONE (866) 733-3506) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT AN ELECTRICAL CONCERN HEADREST RESTRAINT DID NOT LOCK INTO PLACE, AND THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT HEADREST RESTRAINT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. IN ADDITION, WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO RYDELL CHRYSLER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 22,000.

I AM FORTUNATE THAT I WAS NOT DRIVING AT THE TIME THIS HAPPENED AS THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WITH THE IMPACT OF THE HEADREST HITTING MY HEAD.

WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY'D INDICATED THAT THE ACTIVE HEADREST HAD DEPLOYED. AFTER OPENING A CASE WITH JEEP CHRYSLER THEY HAVE REFUSED TO CORRECT IT. THERE ARE A LARGE NUMBER OF CASES FOR THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE WHICH POSES A HUGE SAFETY RISK. DEALERSHIP IS REQUESTING OVER $800 TO REPAIR WHAT IS AN OBVIOUS DEFECT WITH THE NUMBER OF OTHERS THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM.

FRONT PASSENGER SEAT IS RARELY OCCUPIED AND VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN A COLLISION. THE INTERNAL COMPONENTS OF THE HEADREST ARE BROKEN AND IT CANNOT BE RESET. CHRYSLER HAS REFUSED TO OFFER ASSISTANCE FOR THIS IMPORTANT SAFETY COMPONENT GIVEN THAT THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. GIVEN THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ITEM THAT I SHOULD BE ABLE TO DEPEND ON, THE FACT THAT THE FRONT SEAT IS RARELY OCCUPIED AND THEREFORE BEEN SUBJECTED TO MINIMAL WEAR AND TEAR AND THAT MY RESEARCH FINDS THIS TO BE AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH JEEP VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THIS FEATURE, IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY.

I GOT IN MY CAR ONE EVENING AND NOTICED THE PASSENGER SIDE ACTIVE HEAD RESTRAINT WAS POPPED OPEN. APPARENTLY THIS HAPPENED WHILE THE CAR WAS SITTING IN MY GARAGE. I HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT AND THIS SEAT VERY RARELY HAS ANYONE SITTING IN IT. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP, THE SERVICE REP. SAID THE CHRYSLER REP. WAS THERE THAT DAY. THE SERVICE REP. CAME BACK TO ME A LITTLE WHILE LATER AND SAID, "APPARENTLY THIS IS HAPPENING QUITE A BIT. THE CHRYSLER REP. HAS YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION. THEY WILL INVESTIGATE AND GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU." OVER A WEEK LATER, THEY FINALLY SENT AN E-MAIL SAYING THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE THE PART BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. THIS IS A SAFETY FEATURE THAT HAS FAILED!!! OTHERS HAVE POSTED ON THE INTERNET THAT THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO THEM, SOME WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD! I THINK THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE ACTIVE HEAD RESTRAINTS!!! NOT ONLY IS A BROKEN ONE GOING TO FAIL TO PROTECT SOMEONE IN A WRECK, BUT ONE POPPING OPEN WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD CAN CAUSE A WRECK! THE PLASTIC PARTS INSIDE THE HEAD RESTRAINT ARE APPARENTLY NOT STRONG ENOUGH FOR THE TENSION THAT IS PLACED ON THEM. CHRYSLER SHOULD REPLACE THESE DEFECTIVE SAFETY DEVICES!

MY SEVEN MONTH PREGANT FIANC AND I ENTERED THE VEHICLE AND BEFORE STARTING THE TRUCK THE PASSENGER SIDE (AHR) HEADREST DEPLOYED WITHOUT PROVOCATION. THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT TO CAUSE IT TO DEPLOY AND DURING THE INCIDENT IT STRUCK HER IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD. WHEN THIS HAPPENED SHE NEARLY HAD A PANIC ATTACK HAVING BEEN STARTLED. THE BROKEN PIECES FROM THE HEADREST FLEW OUT AND LANDED IN THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. HAD SOMEBODY OR MY CHILD BEEN IN THE REAR SEAT THEY WOULD'VE BEEN SHOWERED WITH PIECES AS THE HEADREST EXPLODED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. CALLED CHRYSLER AND THEY WILL NOT COVER THE REPAIRS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS 600 MILES OVER THE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY. THIS BEING A SAFETY ISSUE IT REALLY BOGGLES ME WHY I AM LIABLE TO PAY FOR DAMAGES. THIS ISN'T A NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR DEAL WITH THE VEHICLE, THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. NOW THAT THE HEADREST HAS EXPLODED SHE IS EVEN MORE IN DANGER RIDING IN THE SEAT, THE HEADREST BEING APART CAUSES HER TO ADJUST HOW SHE SITS IN THE VEHICLE INCLUDING HOW SHE HOLDS HER HEAD. IF THERE IS A REAR-END COLLISION MY FEAR IS THE MALFUNCTIONED PIECE OF SAFETY EQUIPMENT WILL CAUSE MORE DAMAGE THAN HELP. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO HAVE CUSTOMERS RIDING WITH MALFUNCTIONING HEAD RESTRAINTS.

THE ACTIVE HEAD RESTRAINT IS INTENDED TO GO OFF IN A COLLISION TO PREVENT WHIPLASH FROM AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AS FAR AS I UNDERSTAND. MY VEHICLE WAS NOT IN AN ACCIDENT OR TOUCHED IN ANY WAY, SIMPLY TRAVELING STRAIGHT DOWN THE HIGHWAY. THIS WAS CONFIRMED BY AN INSPECTION AT THE LOCAL JEEP DEALERSHIP.

THIS FAILURE HAS CAUSED A SMALL ELECTRICAL FIRE DUE TO ARCHING WHICH IS ONLY SOLVED BY PULLING THE FUSE. A NEW WIRE HARNESS IS NEEDED TO FIX. DEALERSHIP SAYS THIS IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. COULD HAVE CAUSED FATALITY IF SEAT WAS COMPLETELY ENGULFED.

AT WHAT POINT DOES SOMEONE STEP IN AND SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. IN 1 1/2 YEARS MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN 12 TIMES. BESIDES THE 7 RECALLS, THERE HAS ALSO BEEN ISSUES WITH THE GAS COVER BROKE, LEATHER SEAT ISSUES, POWER STEERING, SHOCKS, BRAKE BOOT AND REAR CAMERA. THE CAR SUSTAINED OVER $15,000 IN DAMAGE, HOWEVER MY CONCERN IS OVER THE DRIVERS SEAT WHICH CAME OF TRACK AND WAS BADLY MISALIGNED. FURTHERMORE, MY CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR OVER 56 DAYS NOW, AND THE PARTS REQUIRED TO FIX THE SEAT ARE NOT AVAILABLE. I HAVE BEEN GIVEN NO APPROXIMATE DATE OF HAVING THE SEAT FIXED AND AM WITHOUT A CAR INDEFINITELY.
