front driver and passenger seat belts do not retract, front passenger headrest clips failed and will not snap back in place

Dec 8, 2025

The active head restraint deployed September 30, 2025 overnight while my Jeep was parked on my driveway. The restraint has not been repaired and is available for inspection. If this head restraint would have deployed while driving with my wife I believe it would have injured her. I believe there is a defective part in the head restraint. I brought it to the dealer where I purchased the Jeep. I was told there was and extended warranty but it ended Sept. 25, 2024 so my active head restraint is not covered. I was never notified by FCA or the dealer about this extended warranty. There was no warning that addressed this issue. I spoke with numerous Customer Service Specialists about my situation and they said I would have to purchase a replacement head restraint.

While i was driving my both of my headrests popped open out of nowhere and i freaked out and pulled to the side of the road. Not sure how this happened but i didn't get in any accident thankfully. Not sure what caused it i didn't hit any bumps in the road or anything.

The contact’s mother owns a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while his mother was driving at an undisclosed speed, the driver’s side head restraint exploded. The driver had not sustained any injuries. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was determined that the head restraint needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000.

Mileage: 95,000

Driver side headrest deployed while driving almost causing an accident. Passenger headrest deployed 3-weeks later while parked with engine off. Both incidents left a metal pin behind.

Sep 16, 2025

On 10 September 2025 I was driving home from work in heavy traffic. I was stopped at a red light when I heard a loud explosion and the headrest on the driver seat slammed into the back of my head hard. I thought I had been rear ended but there was no other car close to me. Luckily the vehicle was not in motion when this happened. When I was able to pull to a safe location I saw that the headrest was split wide open. Contacted dealership who said to contact Chrysler who was contacted but has never followed up with a call back.

Sep 15, 2025

The driver's side head rest popped out and hit me in the back of the head, luckily I was not driving at the time, was stopped at a flagger for road work. It hit so hard that I thought the person behind me rear ended me, however when I looked in mirror that vehicle was nowhere near me. I have not had it to a dealer, nor called them yet, was checking first for a recall that maybe I missed. No warning lights at all, no noise ahead of time.

Sep 5, 2025

Last year while driving my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the headrest collision system went off for no reason, hitting me in the back of the head. Luckily I did not lose control of the vehicle and there was no collision or injury to myself. It was very scary, but I maintained control of the vehicle. I went to my local Jeep dealer Pembroke Pines Jeep Auto Nation at 13601Pines Blvd Suite A Pembroke Pines, FL 33027. They told me it was a known issue and the service person made an appointment for me later that week , at which they replaced the headrest at no cost to me under a recall service bulletin issued by Jeep/Stellantis. The same thing happened last week while driving, when the passenger side headrest activated for NO reason, this time striking my wife in the head. I went back to the same dealership. They told me that this headrest is no longer covered under the warranty which has now expired in April of 2025. and would cost $800 to repair. They told me to call Stellantis and see if they would cover the repair. I went home and called Stellantis, whose customer service agent advised me that he was going to escalate my concern to his supervisor. I got a call today and they told me that my car is not covered by any warranty and that I would be responsible for the repair. My car VIN number does not fall under the recall which has expired. He also told me that Stellantis is not responsible for the repair and he should ask the dealer to see if they would possibly split the cost of the repair with me. This could of been a very serious situation, had I lost control of the vehicle as a driver. I looked further online and in Jeep owners club forums and this seems to be a common problem with Jeeps and Dodge Durangos, both owned by Stellantis. This is a clear and dangerous safety issue!

Aug 28, 2025

While driving down the highway the passenger seat headrest airbag deployed. Causing it to hit the back of my head with no warning. There were not any lights on or anything.

Aug 3, 2025

I am writing to report a malfunction in the active headrest deployment system in my vehicle. While driving, the passenger’s side headrest unexpectedly deployed without any indication of an impact or collision, posing a potential safety risk. My wife was in the seat at the time when the unit deployed jarring her head forward. Upon my investigation, it appears that the one of the failure points were internal plastic components. This malfunction caused the headrest to deploy randomly, despite there being no collision or triggering event. While the headrest is designed to deploy during a rear-end collision to prevent neck injuries, its unintended activation while driving can cause discomfort, distraction, or even injury, especially if it occurs suddenly. If this happened during an emergency maneuver or while driving at high speed, it could also interfere with my ability to maintain control of the vehicle. At this time, the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. However, I believe a more thorough inspection of the headrest system, and perhaps the vehicle’s onboard diagnostics, could provide insight into the issue. There were no warning lamps, error messages, or other noticeable symptoms prior to the headrest deploying unexpectedly. This malfunction occurred without any prior indication of a problem. The deployment was a sudden event while driving, with no alerts or warnings beforehand.

Aug 1, 2025

Carbon fiber door panels completely fell off and driver rear end safety headrest went off while driving and gave me a minor blast on back off my head… I was not in a rear end collision!

Jul 20, 2025

While driving the passenger side active headrest made a popping sound and the headrest sprung forward.

Jul 20, 2025

I was driving down the highway to work and all of a sudden my headrest came apart and hit my head. I was able to get pulled over but was stunned with what had just happened. I called a dealership to get the part fixed and they want 750 dollars. I do not have that kind of money and now am driving my jeep with the headrest messed up. I do not know what to do to get this fixed as it is a safety issue as I am driving down the road. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jul 16, 2025

Front passenger active headrest deployed for no reason. No accident or damage. It deployed all by itself for no reason.

Jul 14, 2025

- Incident: Passenger seat headrest deployed without reason. Upon looking it was identified that the small plastic headrest clips spontaneously broke on their own (no accident). Car is parked in the garage every day. The headrest was normal when vehicle was parked. The headrest was found deployed when the car was utilized the next morning. - Available for inspection upon request. - Issue appears to be a well known problem for Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles when looking online, yet no recall noted on my specific Jeep Grand Cherokee. - Safety: had this deployed while someone was in the car it could have caused injury. - No warning lights or other notifications before or after headrest deployment. - Jeep has never let me know about any headrest recall or potential headrest issue though all services have been done through their service departments.

Jul 14, 2025

The head rest on the driver side popped open without a crash.

Jun 10, 2025

I was adjusting my front passenger seat when out of nowhere my headrest snapped/ pop open apart . Keep in mind I take care of my vehicle this shouldn’t had happened . I was checking it out and plastics pieces are broken they should fix it with a better material.

Jun 1, 2025

The active headrest shot off without cause and whiplashed my head and neck. There was not an accident or any reason for it to go off.

May 27, 2025

While driving downtown Atlanta, Ga I heard a loud noise and then a hit in the back of my head. I was startled at first not knowing what had happened. I first thought maybe I way hit by another vehicle, or someone may have thrown something from the overpass. I got off the interstate and found the head rest had blown open. I have since learned that possibly the car maker is aware of the problem, I don't know if the car maker is fixing the problem. I see where this could have negative results to owners that already have neck and back problems, another big concern is having an accident. This occurred [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Apr 30, 2025

The drivers headrest spontaneously exploded while we were driving and hit the driver in the back of the head and created a loud gunshot noise that startled us. When we stopped to inspect the headrest, the plastic clips that held it in place had snapped. We were not in a collision, nor did we hit any significant bumps. His head was not even touching the headrest when it occurred.

Apr 13, 2025

Driver side head restraint exploded automatically.

Feb 8, 2025

Seat active headrest deployed on its own. Plastics holding rod inside is broken and headrest cannot be snapped back into place. No warning or symptoms prior to failure. Headrest hit passengers head when it snapped and deployed.

Feb 5, 2025

The headrest broke for no reason

Feb 4, 2025

My driver seat headrest popped out while I was driving and hit the back of my head rather hard. It startled me and thankfully I was able to keep control of my vehicle. After investigating the issue, it is visible that the clips that hold the pressured headrest in place are broken. Jeep dealership said it is not a warranty issue and not a recall issue. It should be a defect issue for replacement. No warning lamps went off, no beeping prior to hit happening. Also, a few months later, the passenger headrest did the exact same thing. Nobody was even in the seat. I was driving and I heard a pop sound and looked over at the headrest protruding from its frame. Sure enough, same problem. Something broke inside of the headrest and I am unable to press it back together. One headrest doing it may not be an issue; however, BOTH headrest doing it while not being involved in hard breaking or an accident is not acceptabe.

Jan 17, 2025

Passenger headrest popped open while the vehicle was unoccupied, discovered it the next day taking my daughter to the bus stop. Drivers side head rest popped open a couple weeks later while we were driving about 35mph. Vehicle was not in any kind of collision when either of these incidents happened.

Dec 16, 2024

The driver side head restraint mysteriously came apart. We discovered it one morning as we were getting into our car. We've read that there is an extended warranty applicable to the restraint. I've spoken with our local dealer who has begun the repair process (ordering parts, etc.). However, I am concerned that the passenger side one will break as well, perhaps while my husband or guest is sitting in that seat. We purchased the Jeep on 01.19.15, so the extended 10 year warranty that the manufacturer offers will expire for us on 01.18.25, a short time from now. Most likely, the other head restraint will not fail in the next few weeks, so we would be left paying for the 2nd restraint failure ourselves. We definitely feel that a recall should be issued for this manufacturing issue.

Dec 12, 2024

On 12/09/2024, I got into the vehicle, sat in the driver seat, turned the ignition on, and then immediately, the driver seat adaptive headrest popped open hitting the back of my head forcefully. I looked inside the headrest and it appears that there are two plastic pieces that cracked and broke apart.

Nov 30, 2024

Front Passenger seat head rest deployed for no reason and without any impact or accident.

Nov 10, 2024

Passenger seat headrest popped open. It could have been harmful if we were in the car when it happened. There was no warning. We have owned the Jeep since 2017. We do not adjust the headrests. There has been no wear and tear since we purchased, so no reason this should have broken on its own.

Oct 28, 2024

I was driving and heard a snap. And realized the HEADREST popped open for absolutely no reason.

Oct 28, 2024

I was driving and all of sudden I heard a loud noise. And seen that the HEADREST had pooped open on its own for no reason.

Oct 1, 2024

I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the front seat headrest popped out while I was driving at 35 miles per hour. My daughter was sitting there, and fortunately, no injuries occurred. This happened on the passenger side, but six months ago, it happened on the driver’s side as well, which I replaced with a used part for $200. This is definitely a dangerous defect and needs to be added to the recall list.

Oct 1, 2024

The headrest deployed on passenger side while driving. Max Dye of Salem, Illinois checked headrest in March and said it was covered under extended warranty and they ordered replacement. Informed today Oct 1st that they have the headrest at factory but won’t ship because hazardous materials and tomorrow Oct 2nd the warranty will expire anyway. Very Crooked Wanted to know if I would pay for everything they would ship. Max Dye needs to be brought up on charges. Very Crooked!

Sep 26, 2024

My passenger headrest deployed while I was driving. My passenger just felt alittle hit in back of her head from the impact but nothing major. Nobody has looked at it because it just happened last night.

Sep 7, 2024

On Saturday, August 31, I was traveling approximately 50 on a freeway overpass, when my head was hit/jutted forward, causing an immediate migraine. This caused me to hit the brakes a bit and veer a little. Upon stopping and inspecting, the headrest had come apart. After googling, I see there had been a serious issue with the “Active Headrest Restraint” on select Chrysler models. This matches my incident.

Sep 6, 2024

I got into my car and headed home from work. All of a sudden, my headrest popped apart and smacked me in the back of the head. I was not involved in any sort of accident. I was just driving. I pulled over and looked around because I didn’t understand what smacked me in the back of the head. I got out of my vehicle and looked at my seat. My head wrist had popped completely apart, and the clips that held it together were broken, disabling me from putting it back together so that I could drive safely and comfortably.

Aug 2, 2024

Passenger headrest deployed without an accident.

Jul 19, 2024

I was trying to raise my headrest to install a seatcover and the headrest deployed in my face. The vehicle was parked and not running, I was not injured, only startled. However, had I been driving this message would read differently. After searching Google I found there are known issues for this and it was suggested to report it to NHTSA. I have an appointment Monday at 9am at Toliver in Mineola, TX to have it looked at.

Jul 2, 2024

While driving down the road the active headrest on the passenger seat activated and came apart. It is now hanging on by the cord. The dealer we bought the Jeep off of said because it is out of warranty there is nothing they can do. No one can now ride in the passenger seat due to the headrest hanging by the wires.

Jun 26, 2024

The front passenger headrest deployed without reason while driving approx. 35 miles an hour. The headrest hit the passenger in the head causing pain. Passenger was take to ER and diagnosed with mild whiplash. I reported incident to Jeep customer care and was instructed to make an appointment at a dealer. An appointment was made for 7 days later and I dropped off the car. Dealer states they are waiting for an inspector. I called customer care again and was told someone would call me back within 24 hours. 4 days later, still no call. Called on the 5th and was told someone from the legal department will call asap. Waited two more days and still no call or any communication from them. I went back to dealer and took my car back. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to the failure.

Jun 13, 2024

The Passenger headrest just snapped forward and the clips broke.

May 29, 2024

Active head restraint system on driver's side of vehicle spontaneously deployed while parked. No evidence of collision present.

May 29, 2024

The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 MPH with a front passenger seat in the vehicle, the front passenger seat headrest restraint was erroneously deployed. During the failure, no collision had occurred to cause the deployment. No injury was reported. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was 101,000. The VIN was not available.

Mileage: 101,000

May 25, 2024

The advanced headrest deployed on the passenger side without cause. I was getting into the drivers side. It was in our driveway.

Apr 25, 2024

The component that failed is the front passenger active headrest. It is available for inspection upon request. When the component failed, a few pieces of plastic/metal flew out of the headrest. One of the pieces hit me just above my right eye. I haven’t taken my vehicle to a service center as I will be in Alaska for the next 5 months. It has not been inspected yet. I have someone who can take it in to the dealership/auto shop, or allow it to be viewed by my insurance company. There was no indication that the component would fail, at any point.

Feb 20, 2024

The active headrest deployed while I was driving on [XXX] returning home from work this evening. I was very fortunate not to hit the truck next to me or run off of the road as the force of the blow was enough to thrust my head forward and make me see stars. I was able to pull over and after about 10 minutes I was able to see clearly and was no longer too dizzy to drive. This malfunction is extreme dangerous and could very easily result in severe injury or loss of life due to causing a crash. I will be following up with my physician as I suspect the force I felt was certainly enough to cause a concussion. Jeep needs to recall every single vehicle with these headrests and correct the issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Jan 2, 2024

The clips inside the headrest spontaneously broke in the passenger headrest separating the soft cushion from the plastic backing, which pushes the headrest 2-3 inches towards the dashboard. This car had never been in a accident of any kind. My wife was in the seat while it happened driving down the road. There were no warning lamps, alerts of any kind. This has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance. I can see the broken clips because it is spring loaded and I assumed if it popped out so easily then I could just compress is back into place, but instead I see 2 broken plastic clips. This now makes it so your seat has to be reclined or your head is pushed forward putting you in an odd position to sit in. I have read on several forums about this issue happening to others and there not being a recall or service bulletin. This is the same headrest as the driverside headrest and I fear this will happen while my wife is driving (this is her daily driver) and will cause a crash. I have included 3 pictures. 1 is zoomed out to show what it looks like, 1 is of the internal area where the breaks are and 1 is marked up of the internal area highlighting the two areas that broken. The internal pictures show the break, the springs that push it forward, which are there so in the event of a crash they reduce the head movement which will no longer happen causing more injury.

Dec 29, 2023

The Active Head Restraint deployed without any known prior accidents and has been known to deploy unexpectedly while driving causing whiplash and neck injuries. The passenger AHR was deployed when I purchased it used from dealer. Having moderate to severe neck deterioration myself I am extremely concerned of it causing life threatening injury or death as it has been reported by other owners to deploy while driving down the road and hitting them in the back of the head "like a baseball bat to the back of the head" as one owner described.

Nov 16, 2023

The passenger side headrest deployed while driving under normal conditions. This vehicle has NOT been in an accident of any type. The plastic inside of the headrest is broken and cannot be reset. I am concerned this will happen to the driver-side while driving if this issue is not addressed and the faulty part replaced.

Sep 26, 2023

Both headrests have deployed on there own breaking the safety clip to retract on the driver and passenger side.

Sep 26, 2023

Passenger headrest spontaneously deployed at a VERY violent force. Will not go back in.

Sep 7, 2023

Driver side headrest randomly popped out and hit me in the back of the head while driving.

Aug 30, 2023

Passenger headrest safety feature designed to reduce whiplash in rear collisions deployed without being in an accident.

Aug 28, 2023

The driver side headrest burst open as I was driving through a residential street and hit me in the back of the head, causing severe pain and fear as I slammed on the brakes.

Aug 22, 2023

The headrest on the passenger side seat deployed without any warning or a collision (AHR system). This vehicle has never been in a collision. It is available for inspection. My daughter was sitting in the passenger seat when it was deployed causing it to hit her in the head with a good amount of force. It has not yet been brought to a dealership as it just occurred. There were no warnings or messages prior to it deploying. I am concerned the driver side will deploy as i’m driving and the safety of passengers in the vehicle.

Aug 18, 2023

I’m driving down the road when suddenly, the passenger side active headrest deployed. There was no accident, but the safety device deployed without warning.

Aug 16, 2023

Active head restraint on passenger side deployed automatically. Plastic inside appears to be broken

Aug 1, 2023

Driving and drivers headrest deployed for not reason. No collision, no nothing and just one headrest. There is no easy way to push it back down. It is clearly a malfunction. From what information I’m gathering this is something known to happen but no recall or safety warning is issued. This is very dangerous.

Jul 19, 2023

The drivers side headrest deployed for no reason. This is a major issue that puts the person sitting in the front seats at risk. There was no warning of any kind before it happened. When I called the dealership, they say they have never heard of this issue.

Jul 13, 2023

The passenger side head rest deployed into my wife's head while we were driving. No impact occurred, just deployed without any incident. I've read about this happening to many people across a range of Jeep models, and is a major safety concern. I'm personally concerned this could happen to the driver while driving (myself or my wife) causing an accident.

Jul 12, 2023

Driver headrest failed as my wife was driving her jeep. It deployed hitting her in the back of the head causing a slight concussion.

Jun 26, 2023

The headrest deployed as a result of the AHR system despite no accident having taken place. This presents a problem as there are reports of drivers/passengers getting concussions from the impact. The driver seat headrest is still intact, however, this poses a risk of this happening while driving, at any time. Sudden deployment may cause injuries, or an accident which will put passengers and other drives on the road at high risk.

Jun 22, 2023

The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving approximately 3 MPH, the passenger’s side headrest exploded without a crash or an impact. There was an abnormal popping sound during the head rest deployment. The contact called the local dealer and left a voice mail message but had not received a response. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 73,000.

Mileage: 73,000

Jun 15, 2023

Summer of 2021 the passenger headrest airbag broke without any problem to cause it to pop open and it cannot be reset. Luckily no one was in the passenger seat. No one was in the car when it popped. Noticed it next time I got into car to take my husband to chemo treatments.

Jun 15, 2023

My driver was traveling on an interstate and the head rest "air bag" went off and smacked her in the back of the head. This cause her to veer off course and fortunately she did not cause an accident. The head rest feature is for safety when your have a rear end collision not just under normal driving conditions.

Jun 15, 2023

Passenger side headrest deployed spontaneously.

Jun 1, 2023

While driving down the road my driver's side head rest popped open causing my head to be pushed forward. As a result I had to pull over and stop my vehicle. It caused head and neck pain. There were no warning indicators on the vehicle at the time of the incident. It has not yet been inspected by a dealer or service center nor was there a police report or insurance claim.

May 31, 2023

Drove over a bump in a parking lot and the front of the headrest "popped" out hitting the driver in the back of the head. Within two weeks of the incident the driver has experienced blurred vision, neck pain and headaches. Several visits to different physicians as well as MRI and CT scans. Neurologist suspects whiplash.

May 30, 2023

Head rest deployed while driving.

May 29, 2023

Headrest deployed without being in accident. I was about to put my car in reverse when the incident happened. If I was driving and it happened it could have caused me to wreck.

May 24, 2023

The adaptive headrest deployed while I was driving. The clips broke and it is not able to be put back.

May 21, 2023

The headrest on the driver's side seat just spontaneously deployed and sprang forward. Thankfully it didn't cause an accident but now the headrest will not go back into position because the clips are busted. No warning of any kind and no reason to think it was faulty but apparently the clips are faulty because they busted causing the headrest to spring forward unexpectedly.

May 5, 2023

I was driving down the road and my head rest popped open on my passenger side

Apr 14, 2023

The drivers headrest opened.

Feb 19, 2023

Passenger side headrest expanded. I was sitting in a parking lot and heard a loud bang. After looking I seen the passenger headrest came apart and will not go back together. If someone was sitting in the passenger seat at the time they could have bene injured. With the how loud the bang was I thought someone hit my vehicle.

Jan 16, 2023

With no warning or reason the active headrest deployed while I was at a stop light having been stopped for a few minutes and smacked my passenger in the back of the head.

Jan 12, 2023

While driving the vehicle at low speed and without any warning or outside influence the headrest exploded and hit me in the back of the head. I was able to retain control of the vehicle because of the slow speed and situation. I have since learned that this has happened to many other vehicles of my model and is related to the collision reactive headrest retaining components suddenly breaking. I recently had a long trip driving this vehicle at interstate speeds and this cpould have been a very serious event.

Jan 9, 2023

Headrest airbag deployment spontaneously. This is a known issue that has caused numerous accidents. Here is a link with multiple people experiencing the issue. People are directed to contact Jeep Cares but this is a safety issue that needs to be recalled. https://www.jeepgarage.org/threads/headrest-clips-spontaneously-broken.222166/

Dec 9, 2022

Driver headrest popped open

Nov 8, 2022

The active headrest released on the driverseat while operating the vehicle under normal conditions. The headrest hit the driver's head with significant force. The headrest will not reset.

Sep 28, 2022

Driver headrest deployed with no reason while driving 45mph in a busy avenue during rush hour (5pm). It hit driver in the back of the head causing confusion and dizziness. Found a small plastic piece broken inside mechanism. Headrest still installed, haven't taken it to dealer for repair because online comments says repair would be around $900 at my own expense and no way I'm paying for a malfunction.

Sep 16, 2022

The passenger seat headrest violently exploded open while I was driving. If this were to have happened while someone was in the car, or on my driver's side headrest, someone could have easily been injured. It sounded as if an airbag opened in the car. I have not gotten it inspected yet but have read multiple forums of this happening on other 2014-2015 jeep Grand Cherokee and am wondering how this is not a recall. No warning signs given.

Sep 10, 2022

While the vehicle was in operation traveling straight ahead on roadway the vehicles drivers headrest “popped” causing operators head to jerk forward while vehicle was in motion. Driver was able to maintain control of vehicle but was startled by the sudden explosion and impact on head. This could have easily caused operator to loose control and be involved in a motor vehicle accident. There were no warning messages when this occurred and nothing had been done to the headrest prior to it exploding open. After inspecting the headrest it appears a plastic part inside the headrest snapped.

Aug 24, 2022

The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated upon raising the front driver's side headrest, it deployed inadvertently. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the front driver's side headrest needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 87,000. The VIN was not available.

Aug 15, 2022

The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that after he had pulled off the road and was rested in a parking lot, the driver-side headrest deployed without warning. The contact called the dealer and made an appointment to have the vehicle serviced. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired for the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 86,000.

Aug 15, 2022

The Active Headrest on this 2015 Jeep deployed at random. There was no accident or other event to cause this deployment. The deployment launched the headrest forward making the headrest strike the drivers head. Upon visual observation of the headrest, there appears to be a failure of the structural material securing the retainer pin. Dangerous! Forums abuzz with this known issue. Needs recalled IMO.

Aug 12, 2022

The passenger side active headrest restraint spontaneously engaged and will not reset. I was a passenger when it happened and it struck me in the back of the head. I’ve noticed many others with my year, make and model of vehicle have had similar issues, but Jeep is not wanting to accept there is a manufacturing default. Luckily it wasn’t my drivers side headrest. But it could be next time and potentially while I’m driving. There were no warnings prior and it’s extremely rare that anyone rides in that seat.

2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit passenger-side headrest unexpectedly deployed yesterday, August 11, 2022, without warning and with explosive force while driving without any vehicle accident occurring or any impact to the body of the car. No human injury occurred, though the intense force of the explosion caused my cell phone to jump out of the cup holder as the force translated through the seat and center console and nearly caused loss of driving control with pedestrians in close proximity to the car. It could have easily caused injury or death if it had been the driver's side, especially at greater speed. Have not yet been able to take the car to a dealer so quickly afterward. I find no recalls under my VIN, though I found an electronic copy of Mopar Warranty Bulletin No. D-20-10, dated August 26, 2020, stating an immediate 10 year/unlimited mileage warranty extension (X88) Active Head Restraint for 2014-2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Aug 3, 2022

While backing down my driveway, the headrest popped forward suddenly. There were no indicator lights or warnings before it happened. I consulted a mechanic regarding a repair/replacement. A new headrest ($1000) is required because the plastic pieces inside are broken. I am concerned about the passenger side doing the same thing while I am driving and especially if I have a passenger.

Jul 16, 2022

Passenger headrest malfunctioned. Headrest popped open one day. Was not being adjusted just opened. Went to see about placing it back together and the clips were broken. Vehicle was in park at the time.

Jul 1, 2022

The passenger headrest popped open unexpectedly when the car was parked in my driveway.

Jun 16, 2022

Drivers side Active head restraint, spontaneously deployed. Headrest hit driver in the head while driving. Which could have caused an accident had driver had their head against headrest or been traveling at a faster speed. No warning lights or tones before deployment. Vehicle has not been inspected by dealership, manufacturer or police as Vehicle was not in an accident. They will not be notified due to no recall or warranty. Part will be replaced by onwer. After further inspection plastic clips inside the headrest failed.

Jun 15, 2022

Passenger side headrest clips spontaneously broke roughly after 2-3 years of ownership, they did not break during a wreck or collision and the driver side seat is fine. I believe the headrest is supposed to detach like this during an accident but again there was nothing to prompt this happening it just seems like the clips themselves failed.

I was driving my jeep and all of a sudden the headrest deployed almost making me cause a crash i think this is a safety issue

May 22, 2022

I was actively driving my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with my 3 year old son in his car seat in the rear passenger seat when I was violently struck in the back of the head causing me to momentarily black out. I came to confused and assuming i was rear ended by another vehicle, i immediately pulled my vehicle over to check on my son, when i looked back i noticed there was no one behind me. When i got out of the car I began dry heaving and felt extremely nauseated. i checked on my son who seemed ok and on the back of my vehicle which was in perfect condition. I was still very confused and checked on my son again who was crying and scared because " mama was hurt", its at that time that i notice my driver side head rest had exploded. it was completely split in half. my active driver head restraint that is built into the head rest had gone off for no reason. An hour after being struck in the head I was till experiencing nausea, pressure in my head, head ache, neck and back pain and dry heaving. because I'm also pregnant my husband drove me to urgent care. they said i had whip lash and likely a concussion but because I'm pregnant there wasn't much the could do for me without risk to the baby. Because this happened after service hours at Jeep I called the the next morning where they advised me there are no recalls on my jeep and no warranty on the head rest. I will need to pay for it to be looked at and pay for any parts necessary to repair it.

The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the front driver's seat headrest deployed and struck the back of her head. The dealer was made aware of the failure; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

While driving down the road the passenger side ahr (active headrest restraint) unexpectedly deployed striking the passenger in the back of the head resulting in a migraine. Once stopped I inspected the headrest and saw that two plastic pieces that held the metal rod in place had broken even though we were not involved in an accident or sudden stop.

May 7, 2022

Front passenger seat, active head restraint deployed with no cause. Driving slowly down a residential street when it deployed. Cannot reset it as it appears to have been caused by a faulty clip

Apr 19, 2022

The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving while the temperature was at 25 degrees, the driver's seat and steering wheel heating features were engaged. While driving in cold weather, the battery save mode was displayed. The contact was unable to turn off the features and had to turn off the vehicle, open doors, and restart the vehicle. The contact stated that several attempts were needed to disengage the features. The local dealer was contacted but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was unknown.

Apr 6, 2022

Front passenger active head restraint deployed while parked with no collision. It was very loud, and the car shook violently. I thought something enormous been dropped on the roof of the car, but there was no impact of any kind. Had I been driving, this very definitely could have caused an accident. If the driver headrest had deployed while driving, an accident would have been all but guaranteed. The problem has not been investigated by a dealer, police, or insurance representative. There were no symptoms or warnings before the headrest exploded. The car was idling in park at the time.

Mar 2, 2022

passenger side headrest exploded open while parked

Mar 2, 2022

Driver side head rest broke free while driving down the road and hit me in the back of the head. No collision. No wreck. Did not activate properly, plastic holding the system together broke apart.

Feb 23, 2022

While driving under ideal conditions on a 4-lane divided Texas state highway, the "active head restraint" in the passenger seat of my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee deployed without warning. Nothing happened that should have activated the restraint. I was driving in a dead straight line, with no other traffic in the area. The road was smooth, without any bumps or potholes. The restraint deployed with explosive force, slamming into the side and back of my wife's head. She described the feeling like being sucker punch from behind by a boxing glove or padded baseball bat. She has since experienced persistent headaches, along with muscle a joint pain consistent with a mild concussion and whiplash. Had it been my head restraint that deployed, the force of the blow could have easily caused me to loose temporary control of the vehicle and drive off the road. A short internet search has revealed this to be a persistent issue with Jeep and Dodge vehicles, that has been traced to a defective part in the active headrest. This should have lead to a recall to replace a potentially life threatening vehicle flaw.

Dec 27, 2021

The active head restraint system of the headrest deployed randomly while traveling down the road causing distraction and near accident. The driver of the vehicle was struck in the head but no injuries apparent. This happened to the drivers side head rest while traveling down the interstate at 80 mph.

Dec 15, 2021

2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee drivers side heated seat burned a nickel size hole through the seat, burned a hole through my girlfriends sweatshirt and burned her skin. Thank god she was able to maintain her composure and pull over to a parking lot and get out. What if she had jerked the wheel (as it startled her) and caused a crash? What if she was on the highway?? What if the vehicle started on fire?? The vehicle is currently at the dealership and being inspected. There were no warning lamps or other symptoms.

Dec 5, 2021

While my Jeep was parked in the garage the passenger side headrest deployed and it cannot be reset. While no one was in the vehicle (injured) I am concerned that if the driver side headrest deploys while I am driving, I may be injured.

Nov 20, 2021

The active head restraints head rest opened up while the car was parked. The plastic hook is broken and head rest cannot be reset.

Nov 6, 2021

I was driving on surface streets when I heard a loud, startling noise. When I looked to the right, I noticed the front passenger seat headrest had burst open without any collision, impact or warning; I was driving down a paved and maintained roadway. When I get behind the wheel of my car, there is a reasonable expectation that my car is going to perform in a matter that would not put myself or my passengers at risk. I understand that some Jeep Grand Cherokee models have already had recalls for the same issue, but have been told by Jeep that my VIN/vehicle does not qualify. Since the headrest in my car displayed the same malfunctions as the vehicles included in the recall, I would expect to be included in this recall. I am truly grateful my wife was not sitting in the passenger seat at the time. I have read that other Jeep owners have suffered concussions from this defect.

Oct 22, 2021

I had just pulled out of a parking lot and started down the road going no more then 25 mph when I felt something bang hard against me about center of the back my seat I also heard a bang sound so I pulled off the road and into a parking lot and discovered that my head rest had come apart. I have looked online to see if other owners of Grand Cheroke Jeeps have had this happen and found that this has has happened to others.

Oct 7, 2021

Drivers headrest seperated while sitting in driveway overnight. Broken.

Oct 2, 2021

Vehicle was parked not moving. Off. Next time we entered vehicle the passenger headrest automatic restraint pin broke..not pin but bracket holding pin sheared off. Luckily no one was in car when happened.. New headrest cost 400$..labor 150$. No accident how does this go off??

Sep 29, 2021

While driving on neighborhood roads, the driver's headrest suddenly popped forward without warning or reason. My head was slammed forward and I lost control of the vehicle. If this had occurred at highway speeds there is a very high probability that I would have crashed the vehicle. As it stands I have a lot of neck pain from strained muscles in the back of my neck.

Sep 25, 2021

The head rest of the driver deployed unexpectedly while me and my son were in the car on our way to school. It made a very loud noise and we were trying to figure out what it was, it was scary and dangerous.

Sep 15, 2021

The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 25 MPH, the driver’s side active headrest deployed without warning. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and suggested that the failure be taken to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 94,500.

HEAD REST POP OPEN WHILE DRIVING

Aug 15, 2021

Passenger side active headrest separated shooting forward while the vehicle was parked in the driveway.

Aug 13, 2021

The head rest on the passenger seat blew apart and will not go back together. If someone would have been sitting there it would have hurt.

Aug 11, 2021

The passenger headrest has came apart for no reason. The jeep has not been involved in any type of accident. Since there is not a recall the dealerships will not replace this even though there are many complaints about it.

Aug 6, 2021

Drivers side head rest deployed without incident while driving at 70mph on interstate striking driver in the back of the head. Appears plastic pieces in head rest restraint system failed spontaneously.

Aug 5, 2021

The passenger side headrest deployed. At the time it happened, thank goodness my Mother was not in the vehicle. It has been inspected by the dealership. There were no warning signs. Not happy the driver side headrest won't be replaced at the same time. I was told it had to deploy first. Then replaced.

Jul 15, 2021

While my daughter was driving, the driver's side headrest airbag deployed unexpectedly. This happened while driving down the road, at 65 mph, fortunately it did not cause a wreck. It has already happened on passenger side as well.

Jul 13, 2021

The driver's side active head restraint deployed on its own without any sort of collision. Upon further inspection, the plastic which holds a metal rod failed. The rod was still inside of the jaws of the small module which appears to open upon an impact, allowing the AHR to deploy. Upon further research, this is a known issue with similar vehicles. I've since attempted to temporarily repair the thing since we leave for vacation in 2 days and I don't want to drive 2000 miles with the AHR in the deployed position.

Jul 12, 2021

The passenger side headrest deployed without being triggered. Passenger was in the seat at the time the headrest deployed. The plastic inside the headrest broke during deployment or before and headrest will not reseat.

Jul 11, 2021

Passenger seat headrest unexpectedly popped out while passenger was in the vehicle.

Jul 8, 2021

In May 2021, the headrest on the passenger side of the car was noticed to be partially 'popped out' one afternoon. The next morning, after being parked all night, the headrest was fully popped out. There was no damage to the car prior and no accident whatsoever. This active headrest could have popped out while a passenger was in the car and hurt someone. The driver side has not popped out (yet) but now i'm concerned it could deploy while i'm driving. I have not taken the vehicle to the dealer/manufacturer yet, as the car is being driven very little over the past 18 months (covid, work from home, etc). There were no symptoms prior to failure, no accidents, no damage to the vehicle.

Jul 7, 2021

We heard a loud “pop” noise and realized the drivers side headrest popped open.

Jul 5, 2021

I had just started driving down the road from work when I felt a jolt in the middle of the drivers seat and a bang. So pulled into a parking lot and stopped to see what happened. I was looking around not sure what was going on with my car when I noticed the headrest on the drivers seat had popped open

Jul 5, 2021

Driver side Active head restraint deployed while I was driving, hitting the back of my head almost causing me to have an accident

Jun 27, 2021

Was driving with my girlfriend and we heard a loud boom and my girlfriend injured her head because the headrest exploded and jerked her head forward.

Jun 23, 2021

Driver headrest exploded into the back of my head while I was driving on a two-lane road (Hopper in Santa Rosa CA). Impact caused me to lose consciousness for several seconds, and I woke up on the wrong side of the road still in motion with my 6 year old daughter in the back booster seat. This problem is reflected in NHTSA online literature, a certified class-action suit, and online notices about potential recall. Headrest is being replaced for free but the Jeep dealer didn't have any in stock and there is no timeline to get it fixed. Currently working with Kaiser Permanente insurance plan and medical staff to help with neck, head, and back pain, and continuing dizziness on and off every day since the incident.

Jun 22, 2021

I was driving the vehicle when my drivers headrest popped and hit the back of my head. I pulled over to see what happened and it looks as though the headrest exploded but nothing came out. I’m not sure if an airbag was supposed to deploy but it did not. Luckily because my son was in the back seat, not sure if air bag was suppose to deploy or not. I did not hit anything when it happened and I was just driving. Consumer has notified the dealer to get it repaired.*JB

Jun 20, 2021

Headrest deployed without warning. Have read online that this is a very common problem with an expensive fix. Luckily no one was sitting in seat when it deployed or could have caused injuries. If it happens to drivers seat while driving this could be a very dangerous situation.

Jun 15, 2021

On 6/14/2021 I got in my vehicle and noticed the driver side headrest was deployed outward. I can see broken plastic clips inside.

Jun 14, 2021

The headrest popped while I was driving and caused my head to fly forward. Yes it can be inspected. No No No

Jun 13, 2021

The front passenger seat headrest safety mechanism malfunctioned causing it to deploy. This caused a severe head injury to the passenger. Major concern of the driver seat headrest having the same problem and potentially causing an accident. There were no warning signs prior to the incident.

Jun 9, 2021

We were entering the vehicle, as I was getting into the drivers seat there was a terrible noise beside my right ear and pressure on my head. At the same time my grandson was entering in the rear seat behind me and was hit in left ear area with an exploding Active headrest restraint. The car had been remotely started but was not actually running yet and was in park with nothing behind it. I had no idea of this potential hazard, we drive long distances with grandchildren in the rear seat and if this would have or if the passenger headrest explodes while driving, it could be catastrophic. This is not acceptable. They should be replaced immediately, not wait until they actually cause a catastrophy !!!! I would rather not be in constant fear of the next explosion in my car which could have far worse results.

May 29, 2021

An inadvertent deployment of the active headrest in the front passenger seat. Plastic holding clips broken, seems due to material or manufacturer defect.

May 28, 2021

The passenger side headrest exploded open for no reason and cannot be put back. I looks like the mechanism failed and it deployed open with a lot of force. Looking online seems to confirm this is an issue.

May 20, 2021

I was sitting in the passenger seat in my driveway with the vehicle off getting ready for my family to go to the store. The passenger head rest busted open causing my head and body to jerk forward.

SO I OPENED CAR DOOR AND LOOKED AROUND INSIDE CAR BUT DID NOT SEE AN OBVIOUS REASON FOR THE NOISE. THE NEXT MORNING WHEN I GOT IN THE CAR, I NOTICED THE HEADREST WAS TOUCHING THE BACK OF MY HEAD UNCOMFORTABLY SO I TURNED AROUND AND THAT IS WHEN I NOTICED THAT IT WAS POPPED OUT. VISUAL INSPECTION SHOWED THAT PLASTIC ENCASING SAFETY PIN HAS CRACKED AND ALLOWED THE PIN TO SEPARATE, WITH METAL HOOKS ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE RETAINING THE PIN. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A CARPORT OVERNIGHT, AND THE FACT THAT THE HOOKS HAVE NOT RELEASED THE PIN INDICATED THAT THE DEPLOYMENT WAS NOT TRIGGERED BY A COLLISION, AS IT WAS DESIGNED TO DO. I AM UNCERTAIN THAT A BLOW TO THE BACK OF THE HEAD WOULD CAUSE A NECK INJURY AS ALLEGED BY SOME WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM WHILE SEATED. HOWEVER, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A SURPRISE AND A MAJOR DISTRACTION; AND AS SUCH, COULD INDEED CAUSE A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT. I BELIEVE THAT THESE HEADRESTS MUST BE RECALLED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, AS THE DESIGN IS DEFECTIVE, WITH PLASTIC DEGRADING FURTHER OVER TIME, AND CAUSING MORE OF THESE ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENTS TO OCCUR. I ALSO NOTICED, THAT MANY VEHICLE OWNERS HAVE CATEGORIZED THIS AS AN AIRBAG PROBLEM. WHILE THE AHR IS CONSIDERED TO BE A PART OF JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE'S PASSIVE RESTRAINT SYSTEM, THERE ARE NO ACTUAL AIRBAGS INSIDE OR ANY OTHER EXPLOSIVE MATERIAL INSIDE THE AHR, ONLY CHEAP PLASTIC RETAINING A SAFETY PIN UNDER 75 LBS OF TENSION.

MY PASSENGER SIDE ACTIVE HEAD RESTRAINT SUDDENLY DEPLOYED, WITHOUT WARNING, FROM MY HEADREST WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN ON A STRAIGHT RESIDENTIAL STREET AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TYPE OF FRONT OR REAR COLLISION AND HAD NOT ENCOUNTERED ANY BROKEN PAVEMENT, BUMPS, OR POTHOLES WHEN THE DEPLOYMENT OCCURRED. NO ONE WAS SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT WHEN THE HEADREST DEPLOYED, BUT THE NOISE AND FORCE OF THE DEPLOYMENT WAS STARTLING. I'M OBVIOUSLY VERY CONCERNED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADREST MAY ALSO DEPLOY AT ANY TIME WHILE DRIVING, POSSIBLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT OR INJURY.

VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, IN PARK, IN A PARKING LOT, AND NO COLLISION OCCURRED. DRIVER, FRONT PASSENGER, AND TWO REAR SEAT PASSENGERS WERE IN THE VEHICLE. FRONT PASSENGER HEADREST DEPLOYED WITHOUT WARNING STRIKING FRONT PASSENGER IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD. VEHICLE MILEAGE APPROXIMATELY 50,000 MILES. THERE ARE NUMEROUS ONLINE ACCOUNTS OF THE ACTIVE HEADREST DEPLOYING WITHOUT A VEHICLE COLLISION DUE TO LESS THAN ADEQUATE RELIABILITY OF PARTS WITHIN THE ACTIVE HEADREST ASSEMBLY. I AM REQUESTING REPLACEMENT THROUGH LOCAL DEALERSHIP; INITIAL FEEDBACK IS THE PART IS NOT COVERED AND I HAVE TO PAY TO REPLACE IT. EVEN WITH A REPLACEMENT-IN-KIND ACTIVE HEADREST, THE EXPECTED RELIABILITY IS SUSPECT. THE OEM DESIGN SHOULD BE REVISITED TO ENSURE SAFE AND RELIABLE OPERATIONS.

WHILE PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY, UNOCCUPIED, AND ENGINE NOT RUNNING, THE ACTIVE HEADREST RESTRAINT SYSTEM ON THE DRIVERS SIDE DEPLOYED. THERE WAS NO COLLISION OR CONTACT WITH ANYTHING TO CAUSE DEPLOYMENT. THE MECHANIZE INTERNAL PARTS THE KEEP THE HEADREST TOGETHER BROKE CAUSING DEPLOYMENT AND NOT ALLOWING THE HEADREST TO BE RESET OR PUT BACK IN PLACE. I HAD TO PUT A BUNGIE CORD AROUND THE HEADREST TO HOLD IT BACK IN PLACE SO I CAN DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITHOUT THE DEPLOYED HEADREST PUSHING AGAINST THE BACK ON MY HEAD, WHICH IS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. THIS OCCURRED AT APPROXIMATELY 61800 MILES. MY FACTORY EXTENDED WARRANTY EXPIRED AT 60000. EVEN THOUGHT THE DEALER IS FAMILIAR WITH THIS PROBLEM FCA WILL NOT COVER THIS REPAIR WHICH WAS QUOTED AT $900. I WAS ALSO TOLD THE PARTS ARE BACK ORDERED WITH NO DATE AS WHEN THEY WILL BE AVAILABLE. THIS IS A DEFECTIVE SAFETY PART PROBLEM WHICH FCA SHOULD BE REQUIRED ISSUE A RECALL.*DT*JB

THE PASSENGER SIDE ACTIVE HEADREST RESTRAINT ON MY 2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE DEPLOYED WHILE PARKED IN MY GARAGE UNOCCUPIED. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALER - THEY CHECKED THE COMPUTER AND HEADREST AND DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN AN ACCIDENT AND A FAILED LOCKING MECHANISM IS WHAT CAUSED IT TO DEPLOY. THE DEALER AGREED TO CONTACT CHRYSLER ON MY BEHALF FOR A RESOLUTION. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT CHRYSLER AGREED TO PAY FOR HALF THE COST OF THE REPAIR - APPROXIMATELY $350. I AGREED TO PAY THE $350 ONLY IF THEY REPLACED BOTH HEADRESTS WHICH THEY DECLINED. I AM CURRENTLY DRIVING MY VEHICLE WITH A DEFECTIVE HEADREST - HOPING THE SECOND HEADREST DOES NOT FAIL ALSO.

I'VE READ STORIES FROM A LOT OF OTHER JEEP AND CHRYSLER OWNERS THAT EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE AND THERE IS A CLASS ACTION SUIT TO FORCE A RECALL. AT BEST, THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE FIX WHICH REALLY SHOULD BE THE MANUFACTURER'S RESPONSIBILITY. AT WORST, IT CAN KNOCK SOMEONE OUT WHILE DRIVING AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. PLEASE LOOK INTO IT.

WHILE THE CAR WAS RUNNING, BUT PARKED IN THE SCHOOL PARKING LOT. A FRIEND PLACED HIS BACKPACK INTO THE CAR AS HE WAS GETTING INTO THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE HEADREST CAME OFF AND WAS HANGING BY A NYLON STRAP AND A BROKEN PIECE OF PLASTIC WAS DROPPED INTO THE PASSENGER FLOORBOARD AREA. INICALLY, I THOUGT HE HAD DONE IT, BUT REALIZED HE DIDN'T HIT THE HEADREST WITH THAT MUCH FORCE TO DISLODGE OR BREAK THE HEADREST. HE GOT IN AND WE DROVE HOME, THINKING WE WOULD LOOK AT IT THERE. MEANWHILE, I HAD HIM TEXT MY SERVICE ADVISOR (COLLEEN) AT GREENWAY DCJ DEALERSHIP IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA. SHE ADVISED ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO HAVE THE HEADREST REPLACE AS IT COULD NOT BE REATTACHED DUE TO THE BROKEN PLASTIC PIECE. WHILE RESEARCHING THIS INFORMATION I DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A KNOW PROBLEM BUT IT IS NOT YET A RECALL ISSUE. I FEEL THAT IT NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED MORE CLOSELY AND THE REPAIRS COVERED. I AM LUCKY THAT IT WAS NOT MY HEADREST, AND THAT IT DIDN'T OCCUR WHILE I WAS DRIVING AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS. I AM HOPEFUL THAT HQ WILL DO THE RIGHT THING AND FIX MY BROKEN HEADREST AS WELL AS INSPECT AND REPLACE OR REPAIR MY DRIVER'S SIDE HEADREST SINCE I'M NOW PARANOID THAT IT WILL HAPPEN TO THAT ONE NEXT AND WHILE EITHER MYSELF, MY HUSBAND, OR SOMEONE ELSE IS DRIVING THE JEEP.

THE VEHICLE IS AT APPROXIMATELY 79,855 MILES WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE ALSO HAS NEVER BEEN IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT WHERE ANY OF THE AIRBAGS OR HEADREST HAVE DEPLOYED BEFORE. ON SUNDAY, JUNE 3, 2018, I ENTERED THE LEFT FRONT DRIVER'S SEAT OF MY 2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE (WHICH IS ALWAYS PARKED INSIDE MY ENCLOSED GARAGE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA) AND IMMEDIATELY DISCOVERED THAT THE DRIVER'S HEADREST WAS IN A PROTRUDING POSITION. DURING A CLOSER EXAMINATION, I DISCOVERED THAT PART OF THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM USED TO KEEP OF "TELESCOPING" HEADREST (DESIGNED TO DEPLOY DURING A TRAFFIC COLLISION) HAD BROKEN LOOSE, WHICH CAUSED THE HEADREST TO DEPLOY. *PHOTOS ARE ATTACHED. SUBSEQUENTLY, I CONDUCTED A SEARCH ON SEVERAL JEEP (CHRYSLER) WEBSITES AND QUICK DISCOVERED THAT OTHER JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE OWNERS HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME INCIDENT. FURTHERMORE, WHEN I EXAMINED SOME OF THEIR PHOTOS WITH MY PHOTOS, I COULD CLEARLY SEE THAT THE FAILURE INVOLVES TWO SMALL PLASTIC LATCHES THAT HOLD A SMALL METAL ROD IN PLACE; WHICH IN TURN HOLDS THE HEADREST IN AN "UN-DEPLOYED" POSITION UNTIL NEEDED. IN ADDITION, I DISCOVERED THAT NUMEROUS JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE OWNERS HAD CONTACTED JEEP CHRYSLER, AND THE JEEP CHRYSLER CORP. HAD TOLD MANY OF THE OWNERS EFFECTED BY THIS PROBLEM, THAT IF THEIR VEHICLE WAS OUTSIDE THE 3YEAR/36MONTH WARRANTY, AND JEEP CHRYSLER WOULD NOT COVER THE REPAIR. SINCE DISCOVERING THE INCIDENT, I FIND THIS DESIGN TO BE CRITICAL TO THE SAFE OPERATION OF MY VEHICLE AND IF IN FACT THE HEADREST HAD DEPLOYED WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE, I FEEL IT WOULD HAVE MOST LIKELY CAUSED A SERIOUS INJURY TO ME (OR MY PASSENGER BASED ON THE SAME DESIGN), OR IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A MAJOR TRAFFIC COLLISION WHICH MIGHT HAVE LED TO UNINTENTIONAL FATALITY. I THEREFORE ASK THAT THE NHTSA INVESTIGATE THIS FLAWED PART DESIGN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND BASED ON THEIR INVESTIGATION ISSUE A RECALL SHOULD JEEP CHRYSLER FAIL TO MAKE A QUICK AND RESPONSIBLE EFFORT TO THE REPLACE THE PART BEFORE SOMEONE IS INJURED.
