2021 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE Engine Problems

I am reporting a potential safety-related defect involving my Chrysler vehicle equipped with a V6 Pentastar engine. During a routine oil change a few weeks ago, I was informed by the service provider that my engine oil level was extremely low, despite the oil change being performed earlier than the recommended interval. This was alarming, as the vehicle had not shown any warning lights or obvious leaks. The service provider advised me that Chrysler vehicles with the V6 Pentastar engine have a known issue related to a defective engine seal that can cause excessive oil consumption. I was told that Chrysler is aware of this issue, that it has been the subject of class action lawsuits, but that it has not been formally recalled. I have since submitted my information to a class action settlement related to this issue but have not received any response. Due to the risk of engine damage, sudden failure, or safety hazards while driving, I believe this issue should be formally reviewed and documented by NHTSA. I am submitting this report to help document a potentially widespread defect that may affect vehicle safety and to ensure appropriate action is taken to protect consumers.

THE ISSUE IS IN STARTING THE VEHICLE. WHEN I PUSH THE START BUTTON, THE VEHICLE STARTS, BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUES TO TURN WITHOUT STOPPING AND TURNING OVER. I THEN PUSH THE START BUTTON AGAIN TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND MAKE ANOTHER ATTEMPT, AND THEN IT WILL START NORMALLY. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS. ALSO, SOMETIMES WHEN YOU PUSH THE START BUTTON, NOTHING HAPPENS, AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT START. IT TAKES A SECOND ATTEMPT TO START NORMALLY

First gear knocks hard in to gear,this happ en on uphills,cluster and the speed meter and the in infotainment screen has go pitch black,loss of power under acceleration and collapsing all the system of the car.

There is a delay in my car starting when I push the start button. When doing some research online to see what the possible issue might be I found that other cars with the same make/model/year had this issue and was apart of a recall for the fuel pump relay.

My 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee will not start / turn over and if it did the car will shut off. This has been happening for the past week or so. I took it to my local Jeep dealership today and they are stating that both the fuel pump and the water pump need to be replaced. They also stated that the fuel pump recall does not apply to my vin. In addition to my fuel pump needing to be replaced, my water pump has failed too. It is severely leaking water. My Jeep is only 4 years old with barely 70,000 mi and is experiencing severe safety issues. I cannot drive it as it could shut down unexpectedly while I am driving thereby posing a major safety risk.

I believe it is something with the engine or an electrical component. I was driving and as I was parking my car shut off, was not able to completely park back end of the car is sticking out. I looked up if there were any current recalls using my VIN and nothing appeared. I did my own researching and found that there have been recalls for that model regarding the PTU, Power Steering and Power Loss which is the issue I am experiencing. My car turns off on its own and does not get any type of power. Started having trouble turning on my car over Labor Day weekend was not able to travel due to what I thought was my battery having issues, people were jumping me to be able to start my car. I then had my battery tested at O'Reilly's on 9/3/2025 and when trying to jump start my car they shorted my engine block fuse which I was told after having my car towed to the mechanic and they took a look at it. I replaced my main battery thinking that would solve the issue and it did not and this was before the mechanic looked at it. I then had it towed to a mechanic where they replaced the engine block fuse and I was told that the car was good and running after paying on 9/19/2025. I left the mechanic and came to work where after two hours I tried to start my car and it did not. I called the mechanic and was told it was my auxiliary battery after they came to look at the car and inspect it once again that same day 9/19/2025. I purchased and replaced the auxiliary battery and was able to start and drive the car for 1.6 miles to my brothers apartment from my work before the car turned off on me as I was trying to park. There was an error message on the car at the time when it turned off which read with a caution symbol, "Stop Safely Vehicle Will Shut Off Soon" and then turned off.

Was pulling into a parking spot on the 2nd level of parking garage and the Jeep accelerated and hit the cement wall at front of garage space. It accelerated on its own. The front of the jeep was crushed, and I ended up with a fractured sternum and a seat belt hernia which I will have surgery in the next couple of weeks. The airbags did not deploy. And I did not press on the gas pulling into the parking spot --- it just accelerated on its own. When I first got in the car the system showed that systems disabled, but the then the message went away. When I pressed seat one, it did not go in place and I had to adjust it on my own. I continued on to my dermitologist appointment , pulled into the the parking space and the instant brake when too close did not break and the air bags did not deploy. Thru me into the cement wall, and the whole front of the car was demolished, Not epairable.

The car keeps dying while I’m driving and saying “shift to park” and then slamming on the brakes and dying. The card is 4 years old with 44k miles. I had to sit on the side of the road in 93 degree heat in Florida while pregnant and waiting on a tow truck. How has someone not died because of this? I’ve seen SEVERAL posts of people saying the same thing happened to theirs. It’s SO unsafe.

This Car have a lot issues we the computer in the car, the car I was missing oil in the engine ,the piston. Blows out No light 💡 engine On the car have a lot problems we trans mission No light On,I Have problems we transfer Case No light on, Now still having problems if backups sometimes is No light on,I don’t know if Normal but if have a lot safety concerns in this car.

The vehicle (2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee) was on the road for about 90 minutes when the engine shut off for no reason at 65 mph in noon rush hour traffic. We were in the left lane and had to coast through 2 lanes of traffic and an exit approach while trying to avoid a deadly crash with high-speed traffic. There were no warning lights or alarms on in the car. The only message was that we needed to put the car in park to restart. We finally came to stop and waited a minute and restarted the engine and were able to make it home. I called the dealer, and the next appointment was 3 weeks out. I tried driving during a rainy day before the dealer appointment and the vehicle shut off 3 times in 3 blocks, so I returned home and waited for the appointment date. As of today, the dealer says there are no codes and in 2 test rides the car is running just fine. This is a huge safety issue and I hope that we can get help before anything happens again.

The car have a lot of problems engine total failure, mounting joints failure, acelere by him self, jerking,,while driving vehicle kicks aggressively in to gear, oil cup broken down make in the engine to blow oil over , no oil in engine. Sometimes missing 3. Quarters of oil because the seal of the engine no last , is a lot problems in this car

I was driving down the highway and all of the sudden and with zero warning the engine cut off but the effect it had on the car was very severe engine braking as it automatically downshifted very aggressively which caused me to go from about 80mph to a stop VERY quickly. The dash looked as if I simply had the car switched to on without starting the engine. There were no warning lights lit. Shifting into park and turning the car completely off and back on allowed it to start again with no further symptoms.

I was sitting inside my home when all of the sudden I heard a loud boom, walked outside and saw my 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee on fire. The fire started in the front and moved to the back of the vehicle. The engine had been off for about 2 hours and vehicle was sitting in the driveway. My son's car seat, stroller and many other belongings were ruined in the fire. A police report was not filed, but a fire report was.

The auto stop/start system,shuts down the engine when waiting to pull out onto a busy street.it has a shut down switch,but it gets rest everything the ignition is turned on.there is no way to perfectly shut off.

The contact pulled over to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle was able to be restarted. After restarting the vehicle, the contact became aware that the electronic power steering was not functioning properly, requiring increased effort to maneuver the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the vehicle was not yet diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. I was driving approximately 55 MPH on the highway when my vehicle suddenly lost all acceleration. I received an alert on the dash and a chime - the alert stated "Shift to P to Start" - with no other warnings and no CEL or Check Engine light. Pressing the gas, even to the floor, did nothing. I was forced to brake the car to a stop on the shoulder, shut off the engine, and restart the vehicle. Afterwards, I experienced some slight hesitation which resolved, and then was able to drive the rest of the trip without issues. Having the vehicle lose all power on the highway without warning is a serious safety issue.

Vehicle shuts off (engine) randomly during driving. This is the third occurrence. After waiting a few minutes vehicle is ‘fine.’ Dealership is not able to ‘replicate’ the issue. Serious safety issue. How can I operate my vehicle ethically, when I know it could shut off randomly … particularly on a fast moving highway? Dealership says it sees no error codes or issues. While driving on the highway Friday [XXX] in the middle lane the whole vehicle just shut down and locked up. Speed roughly about 20-30 mph in rush-hour traffic. No warning lights at all. Full tank of gas. Zero power to anything. Wheels locked up completely. Shifter nonresponsive to try Neutral. No hazard lights. No brake lights. No way of giving other vehicles a warning. Could not open doors or windows. 911 was called to the scene and I was very thankful not to have been seriously injured or lose my life during this whole situation. I was transferred into the fire truck as to get out of traffic. Fire department had to google where to find locking mechanism for the wheels in order to push it over to the right lane. I have a police case number on hand. Vehicle had to be towed to a body shop. The vehicle was sent into service TWICE before for electrical/battery issues in March & April of 2024. One day I smelled something burning after driving. I didn't see anything the first time but i kept smelling the burning smell and noticed a few days later oil dripping from underneath the car. Oil made its way ALL under the car, it traveled on various parts and created an oil coating. I made an appt to the Jeep dealership (Keffer jeep in Charlotte, NC) and they said the oil cooler failed. There were no obvious signs other than a slow leak from under the car, no warning lights, no change in performance. However had I not noticed coolant could have mixe in with oil and ruined the engine. Less than 32,000 miles on the car when it occured.

It has been observed that the antifreeze and oil are intermixing in the antifreeze reservoir, causing the check engine light to illuminate and the system to register a code of PC304. This particular code is indicative of a cylinder misfire, which can cause the car to stop functioning properly and eventually lead to potential engine damage. To resolve this issue, it is imperative to replace the oil cooler filter adapter and flush the engine. This will ensure that the antifreeze and oil are no longer mixing and the engine is functioning efficiently. Therefore, it is highly recommended to take immediate action and get the necessary repairs done to avoid any further damage to the engine.

During the failure, the check engine warning light was illuminated. The messages "Service Shifter" and "Transmission Temperature High" were displayed. Vehicle died suddenly in traffic 2 times. Was able to restart after a short while. Was a serious safety issue as I was at highway speed 1 of the 2 times. Vehicle is now at an independent garage. 40k miles. Not under warranty. Has not been inspected or diagnosed yet. No warning lights or codes showing.

I purchased vechicle 9/11/21. The electronic start stop option is not Fuctioning. I understand you could stall In traffic if you use the option. I prefer to use standard way for safety.

This was 5 -6 times my new car broke down 3 times for fuel pump problem then i have engine light on more than4-5 times . Now its still on they fixed it 2 month ago. I just buy this brand new car in 2021. Not completed 3 years yet and having 56700 kms on it .

Two days in a row - the jeep didn't start in the morning. After I started it with a starter. The first day, the buttons on the steering wheel and the safety system control stopped working. Incorrectly shows the fuel level. The second day when the car started with the help of a starter, the dashboard stopped working (completely went out). The battery was checked - it is 100% working The dashboard didn't work during the day. Everything worked in the evening. The engine speed does not rise above 3000 revolutions per minute. Now it doesn't show the fuel level in the tank correctly. Very often, security systems such as lane control and proximity to another car fail

While driving at highway speed the motor shut down without any warning. I was in the center lane of traffic and had no acceleration, no power steering, nothing the vehicle went dead in highway traffic at highway speeds. I had to coast and get over several lanes and on to the shoulder. Vehicle came to a stop on a narrow shoulder with speeding vehicles and 18 wheelers whizzing by. I had to cal 911 and get police to help so I wouldn't get rear ended. Had to wait on shoulder for an hour to get a tow to safety. The vehicle never restarted, and the transmission was locked in park. The vehicle is now at the jeep dealership to see what happened. I just read on line that Jeep Grand Cherokees have this problem and Jeep is not doing anything to repair. Please advise me on how to proceed with this. I have been driving for 50 years, and today was the scariest day of my life I thought we were going to die in a pile up. Doug savage

The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they replaced 2 cam shafts and other engine parts; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer a second time where a total of 18 different engine parts were replaced but to no avail. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer for a third time where it was kept for an extended period; she was later informed that there was no fault with the vehicle. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 24,000.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? *radio, sound, bluetooth connection, dashboard, entire screen of radio, navigation, speakers, transmission slipping occasionally - yes it was available for inspection How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? screen often updates itself while driving or the screen and dashboard turn completely solid white or black, preventing me from seeing speed, navigation or anything at all. The transmission often slips causing the jeep to lag. I still have a few dates of service following the forms that were uploaded. please contact me for all documents. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that an unstated software needed to be updated. No warning lights were illuminated. The software was updated; however, the failure recurred. Engine mounts have failed. According to the FCA, they have a very large backorder on these parts, as this is an extremely common issue. Initially they denied that the motor mounts were an issue; however, since the major back order, they have reversed that claim. They also stated the motor mounts would be at the dealership on the 13th of October; however, they now state that they have no date due to major back order. They stated no recall was issued because it's not a safety hazard; however, according to multiple certified mechanics, this is a major safety hazard which can result in the motor shifting and knocking parts out from under the vehicle, causing pieces to hit the vehicle itself or other vehicles on the highway. It also will cause major damage to the engine and other components under the hood of the vehicle. The FCA still has not agreed to this claim, even as some of their own Mopar mechanics also stated the same information regarding it being a safety hazard.

My 21 Jeep Cherokee shipped from Detroit Stellantis HUGE cover up FLOOD car. My JEEP is 8 mons new. I leased it 12/7 contacted Uconnect on 12/13 for Powertrain Malfunction indicator light on. Dealer claims vehicle health reports aren’t accurate. At dealer 3/14/22 service found stored fault for oil, low oil, carpet was destroyed, getting oil changed at 2300 miles. Dealer only recorded oil change on car fax. 3/31st- June I filed a buy back claim w/ Chrysler. Chrysler denied. At dealer 6/11 code P060A, stop/ start doesn’t work, car stalls, radio turns up/down on its own, center consaul base popped out, burning Oil life rapidly. No work done. At dealer 6/14 ”faulty oil pump” said manager, car bucks on highway, car locked me out at 12:30 am called Uconnect they couldn’t bypass. They stated door was open still locked out, stranded multiple times, car will not start. Dealer has me reschedule get rental 6/21-6/29 to replace oil pump, and fix all issues. Dealer state My oil tank is full but dash says 41% oil .Electrical sys. is messed up Called lemon law atty, accepted case. Chrysler receives atty CLAIM whileJeep was still in the shop. dealer didn’t fix anything BUT ROTTED CARPET- OIL PUMP on back order CHRYSLER REFUSES to pay for loaner while oil pump is on back order. The car DOESN’T start. Pump to arrive late July. VM from dealer, Chrysler told dealer my vehicle is SAFE TO DRIVE w/ faulty oil pump. I called dealer to find out status of pump my Jeep needs another oil change at 5,000 mls & ENGINE LIGHT ON Dealer refused srvc b/c Chrysler told them about the lawsuit. Atty called dealer stated it’s a claim against Chrysler. Dealer still refused. My car won’t start,ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. TONS OF SAFETY ISSUES Called another Chrysler dealer VM they REFUSED to service Jeep. 7/23 took JEEP to 3rd Chrysler dealer found: PO6DA, B25AF-2A, B1561-13 Dealer SAID UNSAFE TO DRIVE! I HAVE NO CAR, NO $ CHRYSLER REFUSING TO PAY LOANER. Atty said this is FRAUD. Jeep won’t be in srvc 8/11 FRAUD

I started driving through an intersection after sitting, stopped at a traffic light. I stepped on the gas pedal and the car wouldn’t move. It made a loud reviving noise but wouldn’t go anywhere for about 15-20 seconds. I put my hazard lights on and sat for a few more seconds and then put it in park, and then back into drive. I was able to pull onto the median of a very busy road. My vehicle was brought to the dealership who said there’s nothing wrong with it 🤔

Vehicle is making a knocking noise when in drive and fully stopped. This occurs after drive the vehicle for about 10 miles, once the engine warms up. I've been told that it was a purge selenoid and it's normal. Was also told it was an EGR Valve and also advised that it was the air suspension. Meanwhile they have a open star case stating it's the motor mounts. 100s of people are having the same issue on the facebook group I'm in, as well as forums and no one is getting anywhere. Also my radio system is making a hissing noise and the android auto connection is not stable and doesn't stay connected. They currently have no fix for this. My steering wheel is slightly off to the right to go straight. They stated the alignment is good and that it does that because incase the driver falls asleep, it would drive them off the road instead of into oncoming traffic. That's sounds extremely bogus and very dangerous.

The engine mounts on the right side of the motor are defective. It was discovered after I brought the car in for a drum-like noise coming from the engine. The vehicle is less than a year old and has less than 10,000 miles on it. Dealership indicated this has been a recurring problem in some of the new model Grand Cherokee vehicles and the manufacturer is aware of it. They indicated a recall has not been issued as they believe there isn’t a safety concern.They have ordered new engine mounts for vehicle, but they don’t have an ETA on when parts will arrive. They refused my request for a courtesy rental or loaner car. They indicated car was safe to drive. However, I disagree and expressed my concerns to the dealer. They said I would have to call “corporate”.

Electrical issues stalled car without warning while driving. Vehicle restarted briefly and stalled again with electrical warnings.

2/18/2022, I was driving down Bethany and 75 in Allen, Texas when my vehicle made a sputtering noise then the gears went out. Could not engage the gears to Drive or Reverse. I coasted the vehicle to the church parking lot where I sat for 6 hours waiting on a tow truck. When tow arrived, vehicle's brake and parking break had to be pushed down to allow vehicle to go into neutral. Vehicle would turn on, but the ac/heating system did not work, radio was shorting out and vehicle remained locked in Park. Check engine light came on after the sputtering and did not turn off. Vehicle was serviced the previous week at Dodge City McKinney with no reported issues of this caliber. Per dealership, codes are showing issues with the transmission and engine. Vehicle only has 9347 miles and if I had been on a major highway, I could have been severally injured when the vehicle stopped. Dealership, made no attempt to review the issue upon its arrival.

Last night, my BRAND NEW car (Jeep Grand Cherokee L Limited) tried to kill me. Driving down 1187 going 40 miles an hour, it came to a DEAD STOP, put itself in park and would not crank or start back up. All I could hear in the panic was screeching tires from cars trying not to hit me. The seatbelt also did not stop me and I was thrown into the steering wheel. My car has less than 900 miles on it. After a panic attack of EPIC proportions and a sleepless night, I immediately drove it to the dealership today and of course they can find NOTHING wrong with it. They are going to keep it a few days to double check a few things, but to say I will no longer be able to drive this car without SEVERE anxiety is an understatement. It has less than 1000 miles on it and I haven't even made my first payment. Trading it in, I will automatically lose $3100. If I don't trade it in, I don't think I would ever be able to get over the anxiety of driving it. Talk about a lose/lose situation. All I could think about is if I had been going faster and there had been more traffic, I could have KILLED someone including myself. Thank you to the kind salesman who, when I pulled up this morning, said "I love your car" and I proceeded to break down crying and hand him the keys and say you can keep it. He was so helpful in calming me and getting it checked out right away. I've owned it 21 days exactly. Honestly I am not sure I want to take the chance of it happening again.

I purchased this car on 1/12/2022. It immediately began to have issues, first a coolant leak and then a check engine light. I have been told the check engine light is related to RFH codes for passive entry and Chrysler cannot provide a a date for the software update . I am forced to forced to drive a brand new vehicle with a check engine light on, not knowing if it’s safe. I feel this is unacceptable, I see many stories of the same vehicle just shutting down while driving.

my wife was driving. SUV was doing about 50 mph on highway. With left hand she hit the paddle shifter on the steering wheel. SUV went from auto trans mode to lower gear manual mode. Engine jump up in rpms, had to pull off road, stop car, restart car to get back into auto trans driving. This 2021 Grand Cherokee L has no way to disable the paddle shifters if you do not want to use them. This driving change can happen anytime, local or highway driving. You need to have them come up with software fix to disable paddle shifters.

Vehicle was purchased last month. Grand Cherokee L Altitude. Has <1,400 miles. Check engine light came on. Warning for Electronic stabilizer system. Lost acceleration. Vehicle stalled once coming to a stop. And then once I turned it back on and tried to drive, the vehicle would not accelerate over 25mph. Reset then car drove fine. But then incident occurred again. Glitchy software or modules. This should not occur in a BRAND NEW vehicle. Unsafe.

The start and stop function indicators are active and the hood is open. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where the vehicle was driven for three weeks however, they were unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Consumer stated the vehicle is was unable to be fixed after several attempts of being in the shop 6 wks.

While i was driving on slow moving traffic the engine was shut off, i select gear position to park and start the engine, that works but it happens few times,. Front passenger seat not align properly

As I was driving the suv completely turnoff and would not let me turn it back on for a couple of seconds. Pulled into a parking lot and turned off again. This is very dangerous, and scary.

Two separate incidents, my Grand Cherokee L has less than 100 miles on it. I pulled into a drive thru restaurant and the vehicle completely shut off, still in drive mode. Then 5 minutes later I went to pull into a parking spot, I put the vehicle in park, then it shut off again.

On 7/29/2021, approximately 2pm, driving on Front Hall Rd. leading to our home. Reduced speed to between 15/20 MPH in order to slow down and prepare to turn right into our driveway. Suddenly, the engine shutdown. I had no brakes or power steering. The car came to a stop on its own, since nothing was working. A sign on the computer screen can on stating to put the car in park and restart the car. About an hour later I got the car to service department at I-10 Jeep, Ram dodge in Indio CA.. Today I called to get an update on my car. They said, service was calling Chrysler about the problem. They also said, one of their manager was driving a new grand cherokee L mode like mine and he had same problem with the engine shutting down. They did a computer update on his car, but it continued with engine shut down on test driving it. They advised that a factory rep. would be at the dealership on August 2nd or 3rd to review the problem. This is a serious safety concern when the engine shuts down while moving. Luckily, I wasn't traveling at a higher speed in heavy traffic when the engine shut down occurred. My car has below 400 miles. I purchased the car on July 15, 2021.

Driving Jeep and engine stop, only had steering no brakes fortunately our speed was less than 10 miles per hr and we were in a parking lot. There is only about 770 miles on vehicle and we’ve owned the Jeep 3 weeks. Our concern is what would of happen if we were in heavy traffic, it was rush hour at the time? The dealer is picking up car tomorrow but that doesn’t fix our concerns!

However, the service manager of Jeep Ram of Roseville (25800 Gratiot Ave, Roseville, MI 48066) informed the contact that all 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, were manufactured that way. The glove box was not replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 210.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND A CASE WAS FILED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 500.
