I HAVE MY BROTHER'S 2005 JEEP LIBERTY WITH LESS THAN 100,000 MILES. IT IS A VERY IMPORTANT VEHICLE TO ME AS HE PASSED FROM CANCER. TO DATE I HAVE FILLED THE CAR 3X AND EVERY TIME I GET A GAS GUSHER COMING OUT OF THE TANK. THE LAST TIME I WAS EXTRA CAREFUL AND STILL ENDED UP GETTING GAS ALL OVER THE CAR AND MYSELF. NOW I TRY TO ESTIMATE GALLONS SO IT DOESN'T SPRAY OUT AND I STAND OFF TO THE SIDE. 600.00 IS A LOT OF MONEY TO SPEND FOR A NEW FUEL NECK REPLACEMENT. OBVIOUSLY NOT EVERYONE IS REPORTING THIS AS THEY ARE TRYING TO FIX IT THEMSELVES. TRY GOOGLING THIS ON THE INTERNET. THIS IS NOT A SAFE SITUATION, ALTHOUGH GAS ON THE OUTSIDE DISSIPATES QUITE QUICKLY. ONE SPARK AND THE GAS STATION COULD BE TOAST. I AM VERY LEERY OF CHRYSLER & DODGE GAS TANKS, THANKFULLY MY MAGNUM WHICH STARTED ACTING UP HAD A LIFETIME WARRANTY ON THE FUEL TANK, WHICH DODGE IS NOT VERY QUICK TO POINT OUT. MY MAGNUM JUST STARTED DYING AFTER IT WAS FILLED UP, FIXED NOW I HOPE. HOPING YOU CAN COME UP WITH A RE-CALL FOR THESE JEEPS. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE FUELING UP ISSUES.

WHILE FILLING UP THE GAS TANK, THE PUMP AUTOMATIC SHUT OFF IS TRIGGERED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE THE TANK IS FULL AND AS A RESULT, GAS ENDS UP SPEWING BACK OUT OF THE TANK RUNS DOWN THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE TO THE GROUND CREATING A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD. IT SEEMS LIKE THE GAS TANK IS UNABLE TO VENT THE AIR OUT QUICKLY ENOUGH SO THE GAS COMES BACK OUT OF THE TANK FILL TUBE.

THE COST TO REPAIR EXCEEDS THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE, CURRENTLY WE ARE STILL DRIVING WITH A VEHICLE THAT MAY CATCH FIRE. WE CONTACTED CHRYSLER AS WE STILL ARE PAYING OFF THE VEHICLE, WE WHERE GIVEN THE RUN AROUND UNTIL FINALLY ONE ASSOCIATE TOLD US SIMPLY, THEY WILL NOT HELP YOU. PRIOR TO THIS RECALL NOTICE WE HAVE CONSTANTLY HAD ISSUES WHEN FILLING UP WITH GAS AND THE GAS WOULD LEAK OUT IN LARGE QUANTITIES INSTEAD OF SHUTTING OFF. WE REPLACED THE OIL PAN RECENTLY AFTER IT RUSTED OUT, WE ARE ABOUT TO REPLACE TO TRANSMISSION FLUID PAN AS THAT IS ABOUT TO RUST OUT, THE TRANSMISSION LINES ARE ALSO RUSTING AND CORRODED. OUR JEEP MAY BE AN 05 BUT IT LOOKS AS IF ITS BRAND NEW ROLLING OFF THE LINE, WE TAKE CARE OF OUR VEHICLE. WE ARE INFORMED CONSUMERS AND KNOW THERE IS A RECALL FOR CHRYSLER FAILING TO FIX THE FUEL TANK EXPLOSION ISSUES, WHEN WE LOOKED UP THE VIN FOR OUR VEHICLE IT WAS NOT SHOWING THAT IT IS ONE OF THE ONE'S BEING RECALLED. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE COOLING FAN, THREE WINDOW MOTORS, THE ALTERNATOR, HEAD GASKETS, THE FUEL PUMP SENSOR IS BROKEN, THE OIL SENSOR IS BROKEN, WHEN I PUMP GAS IT SPILLS OUT, THE RADIATOR, THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ON BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE. THE TAIL LIGHTS DON'T WORK PROPERLY AND I HAVE REPLACED BOTH THE LIGHTS AND FUSES AS WELL AS THE SOCKETS NUMEROUS TIMES. THESE ARE JUST THE THINGS I CAN THINK OF OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. I'VE SPENT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, LITERALLY, ON THIS CAR. I FEEL LIKE IT'S A DEATH TRAP WAITING TO HAPPEN AND CAN'T WAIT UNTIL I AM ABLE TO PURCHASE SOMETHING ELSE, IT WON'T BE A JEEP PRODUCT. JEEP DOESN'T CARE IF YOU HAVE NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH THEIR PRODUCT. WHEN I FIRST STARTED HAVING ISSUES I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED FROM TO TALK TO MY SALESMAN AND I WAS ASKED WHAT MY MILEAGE WAS. I WAS RIGHT AROUND 48,000 MILES, I WAS PUT OFF NUMEROUS TIMES AND TOLD HE WOULD BE WHO I WOULD NEED TO DEAL WITH. EVERY TIME MY WIFE OR I FILL UP THE GAS TANK, GAS SPRAYS EVERYWHERE AS THE AUTO-SHUT-OFF DOES NOT WORK. THE GAS TANK OVER-FILLS EVERY SINGLE TIME AND GAS SPEWS EVERYWHERE, GETTING ON ME, DOWN THE SIDE OF MY JEEP, AND ALL OVER THE GROUND. THIS IS A MAJOR HAZARD AND COULD ULTIMATELY END UP IN AN EXPLOSION. AT APPROX 8:00 ON THE MORNING OF 2/16/15 MY 2005 JEEP LIBERTY, 3.8L V-6 WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO ACCELERATE OUT OF CONTROL WHILE BRAKING FOR A STOP SIGN. THE ENGINE WAS COLD, I HAD JUST STARTED IT AND THE TEMPERATURE WAS IN THE MID TO UPPER 50S. I WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 27 MPH, AND BEGAN TO SLOW FOR THE STOP. AT ABOUT 10-15 MPH, I NOTICED THE CAR WAS NO LONGER SLOWING DOWN. IT SEEMED AS THOUGH THE BRAKES STOPPED WORKING. AT THE SAME TIME, THE ENGINE BRIEFLY REVVED ON ITS OWN. THIS MADE THE CAR ACCELERATE. I COULD NOT STOP AT THE STOP SIGN AND THE CAR ACCELERATED INTO 50 MPH CROSS TRAFFIC. I MADE A HARD RIGHT TURN TO BRING THE CAR NEXT TO THE CURB, ALLOWING ROOM FOR TRAFFIC TO GO BY. AT THE SAME TIME, I PUT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL AND THAT ALLOWED THE CAR TO STOP. I THEN PUT THE CAR INTO PARK AND REVVED THE ENGINE. IT SEEMED TO RESPOND NORMALLY AT THAT POINT (ENGINE WOULD RETURN TO IDLE IMMEDIATELY AFTER TAKING MY FOOT OFF THE GAS). AFTER SHIFTING BETWEEN PART TO DRIVE, THEN REVERSE, ETC. SEVERAL TIMES, IT STILL SEEMED TO WORK NORMALLY SO I CONTINUED TO WORK WITH NO FURTHER PROBLEMS. IT SEEMED AS THOUGH WHILE COMING TO A STOP, THE TRANSMISSION DID NOT DOWN SHIFT OR DISENGAGE. AS THE ENGINE RPMS WERE REDUCED BELOW IDLE DUE TO THE CAR SLOWING, THE COMPUTER CONTROL SYSTEM TRIED TO BRING THE ENGINE SPEED BACK UP, CAUSING IT TO ACCELERATE. A COUPLE OF FACTS - THE CAR HAS APPROX. 159,800 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. I PURCHASED IT USED A FEW MONTHS AGO AND HAVE PUT 13,000 MILES ON IT. WHEN I PURCHASED IT I HAD IT EXAMINED BY A MECHANIC AND HAD ALL THE HOSES, BELTS, ETC. REPLACED. I'VE HAD THE OIL CHANGED AT ABOUT 5,000 MILE INTERVALS. TYPICALLY, WHEN REFUELING, UPON REACHING THE FULL LEVEL WITH THE FUEL PUMP NOZZLE IN THE AUTO SHUTOFF POSITION THE PUMP NOZZLE WILL SHUT OFF BUT GASOLINE WILL CONTINUE TO FLOW AND SPEW OUT OF THE FILL TUBE, DOWN THE SIDE OF THE CAR, ONTO THE GROUND AND ONTO ME. I'VE LEARNED TO MANUALLY STOP ADDING FUEL PRIOR TO THE FULL LEVEL TO AVOID THE RISKS THIS SITUATION PRESENTS. ON 11/22/2014 WITH THE FUEL TANK NEARLY EMPTY I ATTEMPTED TO REFUEL WITH FUEL NOZZLE IN AUTO POSITION FOR THE INITIAL FILL PERIOD. AFTER ADDING APPROXIMATELY 2 GALLONS GASOLINE BEGAN SPEWING OUT. TO STOP THE FLOW I HAD TO GRAB THE NOZZLE AND DISENGAGE THE LEVER MANUALLY AND IN THE PROCESS SOAKED MY HAND, ARM AND LOWER LEG WITH GASOLINE. I ATTEMPTED TO BEGIN REFUELING AGAIN WITH AN IDENTICAL OUT COME. I MOVED TO A DIFFERENT PUMP STATION AND TWICE ATTEMPTED TO FILL BY MANUALLY OPERATING THE NOZZLE LEVER. I WAS TOLD IT WAS A CLASS 2 HITCH WITH A 2" RECEIVER. I SAID I WAS REMOVING MY OLD HITCH THAT WAS GETTING RUSTY . HE SAID HE HAD TO ORDER PART AND I WILL HAVE TO MAKE THE APPOINTMENT WHEN IT CAME IN. IT CAME IN AND I MADE THE APPOINTMENT FOR INSTALL AND AGAIN QUESTIONED THE RATING AND RECEIVED THE SAME ANSWER. I RECEIVED THREE RECALL NOTICES SOME MONTHS AGO. THOSE NOTICES STATED THAT AT THAT TIME, CHRYSLER DID NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT PARTS TO EFFECT THE REPAIRS, BUT THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT US WHEN THE PARTS WERE IN STOCK. WE HEARD NOTHING FROM CHRYSLER, WHEN I RECEIVED NOTICES FOR 15 MORE VEHICLES. I CONTACTED CHERRY CREEK DODGE AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAD 5 HITCHES IN STOCK. WHEN MY STAFF DROPPED OFF A VEHICLE FOR REPAIR, THEY WERE TOLD WE WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THEM TO COLORADO CHRYSLER GOING FORWARD. I CALLED COLORADO CHRYSLER TO SEE IF THEY HAD PARTS. I WAS TOLD THEY DID NOT, AND THEY DID NOT EXPECT TO SEE ANY UNTIL THE END OF OCTOBER. THEY SAID THEY WERE NOT PERMITTED TO ORDER ANY, AND THAT THEY WERE LIMITED TO AN AUTOMATIC REPLENISHMENT OF 5 HITCHES PER MONTH. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THIS IS RIDICULOUS. THESE VEHICLES HAVE A SAFETY ISSUE, AND THE CHRYSLER DEALERS ARE DRAGGING THEIR FEET ON REPAIRING THEM. MEANWHILE, I HAVE EMPLOYEES DRIVING UNSAFE VEHICLES. I OWN A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY CRD AND THIS WEEKEND I HAD TROUBLE WITH IT STARTING. WE PRIMED IT FROM THE FUEL FILTER AND IT FIRED UP. ON MY WAY TO TAKE IT HOME, THE JEEP STALLED 3 MORE TIMES. I TOOK IT IN TO THE SHOP TODAY, AND FOR ABOUT $400 IT WILL BE FIXED. THE FUEL FILTER HOUSING WENT BAD, THE FUEL FILTER IS BAD AND I HAD SOME WIRING GET FRIED IN THE PROCESS. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP TWICE. THE FIRST TIME WAS IN 2006 AT AROUND 27,000 MILES. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY DOING 55 WHEN IT WENT OUT MAY 10, 2014. I HAD ABOUT 101,900 MILES THIS TIME. I ALSO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL SPILLING OUT OF THE TANK WHEN FUELING UP. I NEVER REPORTED THIS BECAUSE I DIDN'T REALIZE THIS WAS A COMMON JEEP PROBLEM.

ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS SINCE BUYING THE VEHICLE FROM A DEALER IN 2011, WHILE FILLING UP THE GAS TANK THE GAS HAS NOT AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF AT THE FULL POINT CAUSING GAS TO FLOW ONTO THE REAR QUARTER PANEL, AND ON MY HANDS AND JEANS. ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS I HAVE HAD MY DAUGHTER IN THE VEHICLE WHO IS STILL IN A CAR SEAT AND MUST BE PICKED UP AND HELPED IN AND OUT OF THE VEHICLE. CANNOT LEAVE MY DAUGHTER IN THE VEHICLE TO WASH FUEL OFF MY HANDS, AND HAD TO HELP HER WITH GAS ON ME. THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED MANY TIMES AND YET NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. I WANTED TO INCLUDE MY VEHICLE INCIDENT IN REGARDS TO THE COMPLAINTS ON THE JEEP SUV FIRES. I THOUGHT IT WAS NECESSARY TO INCLUDE MY ENTRY, BECAUSE UNLIKE OTHER INCIDENTS MENTIONED IN THE INVESTIGATION, MY VEHICLE SPONTANEOUSLY CAUGHT FIRE WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT AND WAS NOT THE RESULT OF IMPACT FROM A CRASH. IT WAS A FRIDAY EVENING AND I WAS TRAVELING HOME ON THE HIGHWAY DURING RUSH HOUR TRAVELING WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC AT ABOUT 65 MPH. ALL OF THE SUDDEN, AND WITHOUT WARNING, MY VEHICLE STARTED LOSING SPEED AT A RAPID PACE. THANKFULLY, I WAS IN THE FIRST LANE AND WAS ABLE TO PULL IMMEDIATELY INTO THE BREAKDOWN LANE. ALL OF MY DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON AND WHILE I WAS LEANING OVER TO INSPECT WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE THE PROBLEM, THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY BURST INTO FLAMES. I EXITED THE VEHICLE SWIFTLY AND LUCKILY A TOW TRUCK DRIVER WHO HAD SAW THE SMOKE IMMEDIATELY CALLED 911. THE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES IN LESS THEN 5 MINUTES. HAD I NOT BEEN ABLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE OR HAD CHILDREN RESTRAINED IN THE BACK SEAT, THERE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS INJURIES OR POSSIBLY A FATALITY. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO CHRYSLER AFTER GOING THROUGH MY INSURANCE. THERE RESPONSE WAS A POLITE LETTER TELLING ME THEY WERE SORRY FOR THE INCIDENT, BUT WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE. THE VEHICLE WAS LESS THAN 2 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME AND SERVICED REGULARLY. THE FINDING OF THE FIRE DEPT.'S INSPECTION WAS INCONCLUSIVE, BUT I WAS TOLD IN CONFIDENCE THAT IT SEEMED MORE THAN LIKELY IT WAS A FAULTY ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE. AFTER THE INCIDENT, I TOOK MULTIPLE PHOTOS OF THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR OF THE JEEP, WHICH INCLUDED UNDER THE HOOD SINCE WE SUSPECTED THE ENGINE WAS AT FAULT.
