The ball joint broke while I was driving I lost all control of vehicle
The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact noticed an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle, and the vehicle was shaking erratically. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with transfer case and transmission failure. The contact was informed that the transfer case and the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The contact researched NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V278000 (Suspension). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was advised to submit the repair documents regarding the failure. In addition, the contact was informed that the replacement of the transfer case and the transmission replacement were not covered under the recall. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline and report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT ON RIGHT SIDE HAS FELL OUT TWICE, 8 MONTHS APART. BOTH TIMES THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, GOING LESS THE 20 MPH. ROAD CONDITIONS WERE DRY, AND ON ON REGULAR PAVED ROAD. I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT ON THE ROAD BOTH TIMES. THE FIRST TIME IT BROKE, IT CAUSE MY WHEEL TO BREAK AND FLATTER MY TIRE, SECOND TIME IT DAMAGED MY WHEEL BUT DIDN'T NOT BUST THROUGH IT. MOTOR MOUNTS HAVE BROKE 2 TIMES AS WEEK 1 WEEK AFTER REPAIRED IT BROKE THE 2ND TIME. TRANSMISSION MOUNT HAS ALSO BROKE.

MY CAR HAD BEEN DRIVING FINE WHEN I WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK THIS MORNING I FELT A POP UNDER THE CAR AND THEN MY CAR LOST POWER AND NOW IT WON'T GO INTO GEAR.. BUT IT STILL TURNS ON.

THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION SLIPS OUT OF 1ST GEAR. IT'S DANGEROUS WHEN TRYING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN, OR MERGING INTO TRAFFIC, RED LIGHTS UPHILL. IT IS UNSAFE FOR THE CAR TO DROP OUT OF GEAR AND LOOSES POWER WHEN IT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO GET OUT OF THE WAY. THIS TRANSMISSION ISSUE LEADS TO A LOT OF 'NEAR MISSES' FROM DRIVERS BEHIND WHO EXPECT TO ROLL FORWARD AS NORMAL OR FLOWING TRAFFIC WHO DON'T EXPECT A CAR TO STOP IN FRONT OF THEM. MECHANICS SAY THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE FOR THIS MODEL. I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP WHEN THE PROBLEM FIRST STARTED, AND WHILE THEY KNOW OF THE PROBLEM THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO FIX IT UNDER THE WARRANTY (WHICH AT THE TIME IT WAS STILL UNDER). IN VARIOUS JEEP FORUMS, I'VE SEEN OTHER USERS COMPLAIN OF THE SAME SAFETY ISSUE. AT ONE POINT THERE WAS TALK OF A CLASS ACTION SUIT - BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. THERE IS UNDOUBTEDLY DATA AROUND THIS. LOOK AT HOW MANY JEEP ACCIDENTS HAPPEN WITHIN A FEW SECONDS OF STARTING (FROM A STOP SIGN, LIGHT, UP-HILL, ETC). I BET MOST ACCIDENTS HAPPEN FROM BEHIND, OR FROM THE SIDE (WHILE MERGING).

ANOTHER ISSUE MY JEEP LIBERTY RENEGADE HAS, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT GO ALL THE WAY INTO PARK POSITION, AND ALLOW THE IGNITION TO BE TURNED COMPLETELY TO THE OFF POSITION SO THE KEY CAN BE REMOVED. I HAVE TO PUSH VERY HARD ON THE GEAR SHIFTER TO GET IT TO GO INTO PARK, IN ORDER TO REMOVE THE KEY. THIS COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE NOT TO BE COMPLETELY IN THE PARK POSITION, OR THE VEHICLE TO JUMP OUT OF PARK AND ROLL AWAY, WHICH COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT, OR FATAL INJURY. WHEN I DO A SEARCH ON ACTIVE RECALLS FOR 2005 JEEP I BERRY RENEGADE, IT SHOWS ONE ACTIVE FOR THIS ISSUE, REGARDING TRANSMISSION, AND IMPROPER PARK ANCHOR INSTALLATION, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO NOT BE IN PARK AND/OR COME OUT OF PARK. HOWEVER, WHEN I SEARCH MY VEHICLE VIN IT DOESN'T SHOW THIS RECALL ACTIVE PER MY VIN NUMBER. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE RECALL REPAIR WAS PREVIOUSLY PERFORMED AND WOULD NOT BE DONE A SECOND TIME. A FEW MINUTES LATER, THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED AND LEFT UNATTENDED WITH THE A/C ACTIVATED. UPON RETURN, THE VEHICLE EXPLODED AND CAUGHT ON FIRE. IT WAS UNKNOWN IF A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILS FROM WINTER TO SUMMER CAUSING MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION TO THE COMPUTER, THE AUTO CAN OVERHEAT, IT CAN ALSO CLEAR DOWN AND OPEN FAILURE OF GASOLINE. THE BALL JOINTS FAIL TRULY. IT HAPPENED TO ME IN THREE OCCASIONS WHEN I CIRCULATED BY THE CITY WHEN CROSSING ON A STREET, WHILE PASSING A TUMBLE, AND ON A TERRACE STREET. THE FRONT BRAKE SYSTEM BREAKS CAUSING BRAKE LIQUID LEAKS THIS IS CAUSED BY THE WARMING OF PARTS AND DIRT. I SAW THE STAIN IN THE SOIL WHEN I PARK IN MY GARAGE AND CHECK.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I HAVE A JEEP LIBERTY AND I CANNOT DRIVE IT AND I CANNOT GET IT FIXED. IT HAS BEEN OUT OF SERVICE FOR MONTHS. IT WAS TOWED TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC. HE TRIED TO GET A TRANSMISSION SEVERAL TIMES BUT THEY WERE NEVER THE CORRECT ONE. WITH THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BY MY MECHANIC AND MY RESEARCH IT APPEARS JEEP PUT THE WRONG TRANSMISSION IN MY JEEP LIBERTY WHICH EXPLAINS WHY I CANNOT FIND ONE TO MATCH. JEEP USED THE 42RLE TRANSMISSION FROM 2003-2013. THE 42RLE TRANSMISSION HAS 4 CONNECTORS AND A STRAIGHT CROSS MEMBER. MY TRANSMISSION DOES NOT HAVE 4 CONNECTORS AND IT DOES NOT HAVE A STRAIGHT CROSS MEMBER. THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM JEEP PUT THE WRONG TRANSMISSION IN MY JEEP. ALSO, JEEP RECOMMENDS PUTTING A TRANSMISSION COOLER ON THE VEHICLE. WHY WASN'T THIS DONE WHEN IT WAS FIRST MANUFACTURED. THE FACT THAT THE WRONG TRANSMISSION WAS USED AND THEY DID NOT INSTALL A TRANSMISSION COOLER HELPS TO EXPLAIN WHY I HAVE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. TO ME THIS IS FRAUD. I DID NOT RECEIVE WHAT I PAID FOR. I CHECKED WITH A JEEP DEALER AND THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THE 2005 JEEP LIBERTY DID NOT COME EQUIPPED WITH A TRANSMISSION COOLER. ANOTHER JEEP DEALER PROVIDED ME WITH A RECOMMENDED LIST OF PARTS TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM SIGHT UNSEEN AND IT INCLUDED A TRANSMISSION COOLER THAT WAS NOT INSTALLED ORIGINALLY. CHRYSLER IS OFFERING A NEW LIFETIME POWERTRAIN WARRANTY ON 2006-2009 MODELS THAT INCLUDES REPLACING POWERTRAIN COMPONENTS: ENGINE, TRANSMISSION AND DRIVE SYSTEM INCLUDING PARTS AND LABOR OR THEY WILL BUY YOUR VEHICLE BACK. THESE VEHICLES HAVE THE SAME COMPONENTS AS THE 2005 AND FOR ONE YEAR DIFFERENCE I RECEIVE NOTHING WHILE OTHERS RECEIVE LIFETIME. THAT SEEMS LIKE DISCRIMINATION TO ME. JUST CHECK THE INTERNET THERE ARE ARTICLES ALL OVER ABOUT BROKEN WINDOW REGULATORS. I UNDERSTAND THEY ONLY RECALLED 2006 AND 2007 WHAT ABOUT 2002-2005 WHICH WERE BAD FIRST. ON TOP OF THAT THEY REPLACE THEM WITH THE SAME DEFECTIVE WINDOW REGULATORS SO THEY WILL BREAK AGAIN AND AGAIN. THAT WAY THE DEALERS CAN CONTINUE TO MAKE MONEY ON YOU. THE GARAGE TOLD ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION IN MY CAR WAS USED FOR ONE YEAR ON ONE MODEL AND I BELIEVE IT BECAUSE THEY HAVE TRIED ALL OVER FOR A TRANSMISSION AND CANNOT GET THE RIGHT ONE. THEY HAVE HAD THREE SENT IN AND ALL THREE WERE WRONG. THIS JUST CONFIRMS THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS DEFECTIVE AND THEY STOP USING IT. PLUS A TRANSMISSION SHOULD LAST FAR LONGER THAN 120,000 MILES. I READ ALL THE TIME THAT TODAY CARS ARE GOOD FOR 200,000 MILES OR MORE. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE OTHER DEFECTIVE PARTS ON THE JEEP: BELT TENSIONERS, LOCKS, ROOF RACK, WINDOW REGULATORS, HORN, LEAKING WINDSHIELD, RUBBER ON ROOF RACK, RUBBER ON AND AROUND DOORS, UPHOLSTERY STAINS EVEN FROM WATER, MASTER CYLINDER, REPLACING LIGHTS WAY TO OFTEN AS WELL AS FUSES, MARKS IN THE PAINT, FUEL RELAY SWITCH, AND THIS LIST IS BY NO MEANS ALL INCLUSIVE IT IS JUST WHAT I CAN REMEMBER OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. I HAVE CONTACTED CHRYSLER OVER THE YEARS ABOUT WINDOW REGULATORS AND THEY DON'T CARE. YOUR CAR IS NEVER SECURE WHEN A WINDOW WILL DROP WITHOUT WARNING. IT CAN OCCUR WHILE DRIVE OR EVEN WHEN YOU ARE NOT IN THE CAR. ONLY ONE WINDOW IN MY CAR GETS OPENED. WINDOWS NOT USED BREAK LEAVING YOU SUSCEPTIBLE TO THEFT AND BODILY HARM. JEEP LIBERTY WITH A 6 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION PERIODICALLY POPS OUT OF FIRST GEAR AS YOU BEGIN TO ACCELERATE. THERE DOESN'T APPEAR TO BE A PATTERN TO THE PROBLEM LIKE HOW QUICKLY ARE SLOWLY YOU ACCELERATE.
WHEN SHIFTING MY JEEP FROM 1ST TO 2ND IT SOMETIMES MAKES A GRINDING NOISE. I BROUGHT IT TO MY MECHANIC TODAY AND HE TOOK IT FOR A RIDE. HE TOLD ME THAT HE THINKS IT'S A LITTLE BALL INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION THAT IS COVERED WITH NYLON, AND A COUPLE OF FORKS MAKE IT MOVE. HE IS GOING TO TRY CHANGING MY TRANSMISSION FLUID TO A SYNTHETIC BRAND IN HOPES THAT WILL SLOW DOWN THE WEAR ON THE NYLON BALL, BUT EVENTUALLY I WILL NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. I ASKED HIM WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN THE BALL FINALLY BREAKS, AND HE TOLD ME THE VEHICLE WILL CEASE TO MOVE, RATHER I AM DRIVING IT OR NOT. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT THIS PROBLEM IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH JEEPS. IF THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH JEEPS THEN WHY HAVEN'T THEY BEEN RECALLED AND/OR FIXED?

AFTER DRIVING MY JEEP FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES IT WILL START GOING IN AND OUT OF LIMP MODE THEN IT WILL DOWNSHIFT HARD TO 3RD GEAR AND WILL REV THE ENGINE UNTIL IT IS SHUT OFF AND STARTED AGAIN. AT APPROX 8:00 ON THE MORNING OF 2/16/15 MY 2005 JEEP LIBERTY, 3.8L V-6 WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO ACCELERATE OUT OF CONTROL WHILE BRAKING FOR A STOP SIGN. THE ENGINE WAS COLD, I HAD JUST STARTED IT AND THE TEMPERATURE WAS IN THE MID TO UPPER 50S. I WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 27 MPH, AND BEGAN TO SLOW FOR THE STOP. AT ABOUT 10-15 MPH, I NOTICED THE CAR WAS NO LONGER SLOWING DOWN. IT SEEMED AS THOUGH THE BRAKES STOPPED WORKING. AT THE SAME TIME, THE ENGINE BRIEFLY REVVED ON ITS OWN. THIS MADE THE CAR ACCELERATE. I COULD NOT STOP AT THE STOP SIGN AND THE CAR ACCELERATED INTO 50 MPH CROSS TRAFFIC. I MADE A HARD RIGHT TURN TO BRING THE CAR NEXT TO THE CURB, ALLOWING ROOM FOR TRAFFIC TO GO BY. AT THE SAME TIME, I PUT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL AND THAT ALLOWED THE CAR TO STOP. I THEN PUT THE CAR INTO PARK AND REVVED THE ENGINE. IT SEEMED TO RESPOND NORMALLY AT THAT POINT (ENGINE WOULD RETURN TO IDLE IMMEDIATELY AFTER TAKING MY FOOT OFF THE GAS). AFTER SHIFTING BETWEEN PART TO DRIVE, THEN REVERSE, ETC. SEVERAL TIMES, IT STILL SEEMED TO WORK NORMALLY SO I CONTINUED TO WORK WITH NO FURTHER PROBLEMS. IT SEEMED AS THOUGH WHILE COMING TO A STOP, THE TRANSMISSION DID NOT DOWN SHIFT OR DISENGAGE. AS THE ENGINE RPMS WERE REDUCED BELOW IDLE DUE TO THE CAR SLOWING, THE COMPUTER CONTROL SYSTEM TRIED TO BRING THE ENGINE SPEED BACK UP, CAUSING IT TO ACCELERATE. A COUPLE OF FACTS - THE CAR HAS APPROX. 159,800 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. I PURCHASED IT USED A FEW MONTHS AGO AND HAVE PUT 13,000 MILES ON IT. WHEN I PURCHASED IT I HAD IT EXAMINED BY A MECHANIC AND HAD ALL THE HOSES, BELTS, ETC. REPLACED. I'VE HAD THE OIL CHANGED AT ABOUT 5,000 MILE INTERVALS. I DRIVE WITH ONE FOOT ONLY, I DON'T USE SEPARATE FEET FOR THE GAS AND THE BRAKE. THE FLOOR MAT WAS NOT MOVED BEFORE OR AFTER THIS INCIDENT, AND IS NOT CLOSE TO THE GAS PEDAL. THE ROAD WAS CLEAR OF ANY DEBRIS. AFTER A COUPLE OF YEARS TAKING IT IN INTO MY JEEP DEALERSHIP THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. FINALLY NOT THIRD BUT FORTH WAS A CHARM WHEN THEY TOLD ME THE LOWER FRONT ARMS AND BUSHING NEEDED REPLACING. I HAVE HEARD FROM MANY JEEP OWNERS THAT THEY HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS I WANT TO KNOW WHY THESE PARTS HAVE NOT BEEN RECALLED. *TR

MY GIRLFRIEND OF 21 YEARS, WENT INTO THE DOCTOR AND WHEN SHE CAME OUT HER JEEP LIBERTY WOULD START AND THEN STALL. SHE SAID THERE WAS CLUNKING NOISE FROM THE ENGINE. I GET THERE AND CALL AAA AND HAVE IT TOWED TO A PLUS TRANSMISSION AND AUTO REPAIR IN BRIGHTON MICHIGAN. THEY SAID THE ROCKER ARM CAME LOSE FROM THE ADJUSTER AND THAT SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. NOT SO, TURNS OUT IT WAS A BROKEN VALVE SEAT ALSO THAT HAD DROPPED DOWN INTO THE CYLINDER CAUSING CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. WE ARE LEFT WITH THE EXPENSE OF REPLACING THE ENGINE AT A COST TO US OF $5600.00. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE CHRYSLER 3.7 V6 ENGINE. IT HAPPENS JUST AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES. WITH TODAYS TECHNOLOGY I BELIEVE THAT ENGINE SHOULD HAVE HAD LASTED UP TO 200000 MILES. SINCE WE CANT AFFORD A NEW CAR THIS IS THE ONLY WAY WE CAN GO. MECHANIC CHANGED TEMPERAMENTAL SENSOR WHICH, SO FAR, SEEMS TO BE MANAGED. THE A/C FAN ONLY WORKS AT 3 AND UP, WHICH IS TOO MUCH HOT/COLD FOR EVEN THE MOST ANEMIC AFTER MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES. 2005 JEEP LIBERTY CRD HAS INTERMITTENT AND UNPREDICTABLE ISSUES WITH "SHUDDERING" AND "BUCKING" BOTH ON THE HIGHWAY AND AT LOW SPEED OR STOP. THE VEHICLE SOMETIMES DIES UNEXPECTEDLY AT INTERSECTIONS, OR HESITATES WHEN ACCELERATING SUCH AS TURNING FROM STOP AT AN INTERSECTION. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION "GEAR HUNTS" BETWEEN 50 AND 60 MPH, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SHUDDER AND LURCH UNPREDICTABLY. MOST NOTABLY DANGEROUS PROBLEM IS THAT OF THE VEHICLE DYING WHEN THE BRAKE IS STEPPED ON WHILE APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION, OR DYING WHEN PULLING AWAY FROM AN INTERSECTION. THIS SITUATION COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT, AS THE VEHICLE WILL STOP WITHOUT THE BRAKE BEING APPLIED. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES FOR THE SAME TROUBLE. THE HESITATION PROBLEMS SEEMS TO DISAPPEAR FOR A TIME, BUT ALWAYS RETURN. THE TRANSMISSION SHUDDER AND "GEAR HUNTING" HAVE NEVER CEASED. THE DEALER HAS REPEATEDLY SUGGESTED THAT IT IS "TURBO LAG" OR THE "FILTERS NEED TO BE REPLACED." FILTER REPLACEMENT HAS DONE NOTHING. *NM
I ALMOST LOST MY LIFE ON A CLIFFSIDE CORNER ON HWY 1 WHEN MY 2005 JEEP LIBERTY CRD (COMMON RAIL DIESEL) TORQUE CONVERTER FAILED CAUSING BOTH REAR WHEELS TO LOCK UP AT 55 MPH. HAPPENED AGAIN A COUPLE MILES LATER AND THEN CONTINUED TO REPEAT ITSELF AS I WAS ATTEMPTING TO GET IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. IT HAS BEEN AT THE DEALER 5 TIMES TO DATE FOR THE INITIAL PROBLEMS (STALLING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND GOING INTO LIMP MODES). I KNEW IT WAS THE TORQUE CONVERTER PREPARING TO GO OUT BECAUSE I HAD RESEARCHED CONSUMER REPORTINGS OF SIMILAR PROBLEMS ONLINE. THE DEALERSHIP, HOWEVER, EXPLAINED THAT THEY WOULD ONLY FOLLOW CHRYSLER CORPORATE'S RULES AND CORPORATE WASN'T ALLOWING THEM TO REPLACE THE CONVERTER. INSTEAD THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED TRANSMISSION SOLENOID, THEN TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE, THEN CALLED TO TELL ME IT WAS MY AFTERMARKET INSTALLATION PROBLEM (TWICE). EACH TIME THIS MEANT THAT THEY SENT ME OUT IN A "FIXED" VEHICLE THAT STALLED ON ME AND CAUSED ME TO PUT EMERGENCY HAZARDS ON AND DRIVE IN LIMP MODE IN RIGHT HAND LANE OR ON SHOULDER. THEN WHEN THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE MANAGER DROVE IT AND PERSONALLY FELT WHAT A "SAFETY ISSUE IT WAS", HAS NOW LOOKED AT THE POSTINGS AND IS BEFUDDLED WHY CORPORATE WASN'T ADVISING THEM OF THIS PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT WITH THESE 2005 AND 2006 JEEP LIBERTY CRDS AND THAT CHRYSLER IS AWARE OF IT BUT DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT. CHRYSLER IS PUTTING ITS CONSUMERS AT GRAVE RISK FOR LOSS OF LIFE. MY 2005 JEEP LIBERTY DIESEL HAD A CATASTROPHIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON THE DRIVE HOME FROM THE PURCHASE FROM THE DEALER. I BOUGHT IT USED WITH 18,000 MILES AND DURING THE DRIVE HOME I HAD IRREGULAR SHIFTING FOLLOWED BY HIGH ENGINE REVS AND THEN A LOSS OF POWER ON THE HIGHWAY WITH MULTIPLE WARNING LIGHTS (ALMOST AS IF I HAD LOST A GEAR). AFTER TAKING IT TO THE DEALER THE FIRST TIME, THEY REPLACED AN INTERNAL COMPONENT IN THE TRANSMISSION, I DROVE IT HOME (APPROX. 30 MI.) AND HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN. THE SECOND TIME THE DEALER SAID THAT THE ORIGINALLY, THEY DID NOT REPLACE ENOUGH OF THE TRANS. TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I ENDED UP NEEDING A NEW TORQUE CONVERTER AND VARIOUS OTHER INTERNAL TRANSMISSION COMPONENTS. THIS MUST HAVE BEEN QUITE THE POPULAR REPAIR BECAUSE THE DEALER HAD MY CAR FOR 3 1/2 WEEKS AS THE PART WAS ON CHRYSLER BACKORDER. SOMETIMES THE TRANSMISSION STILL SEEMS AWKWARD AND I GET AN OCCASIONAL SHUDDER HOWEVER, THE OCCURRENCES VARY AND IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO PREDICT OR PINPOINT WHEN SOMETHING STRANGE HAPPENS. *NM

AFTER COMING TO A STOP AT A STOP LIGHT MY FAMILY WAS STRANDED AT A DESOLATE INTERSECTION IN HOT SOUTH TEXAS. THERE WAS GREAT POTENTIAL FOR A COLLISION AND LOSS OF LIFE WHEN VEHICLE CONTROL AND ACCELERATION WAS LOST AS WELL AS WHILE PUSHING THE VEHICLE FROM TRAVEL LANES. THE REPAIR TOOK 3 WEEKS LEAVING ME WITHOUT MY NEW VEHICLE. I INCURRED GREATER THAN $1500 IN EXPENSES IN HOTEL AND TRAVEL EXPENSES TO RETRIEVE MY CAR FROM A DEALERSHIP FAR FROM HOME. TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, JEEP WAS AND IS AWARE OF TRANSMISSION RELIABILITY ISSUES AND HAS ISSUED A TSB "SILENT RECALL" BUT DID NOT NOTIFY DRIVERS THEREFORE UNNECESSARILY PUTTING MY FAMILY AT RISK. *NM

THESE TSB'S ARE NUMBERED 18-008-06, 21-009-06, 21-007-06 AND NOW A RECALL NUMBER F31 AS AN EMISSION ISSUE AS THE PREVIOUS TSB'S CAUSED A SITUATION WHERE BY SCAN TOOLS COULD NOT "READ" THE VEHICLES COMPUTER FOR EMISSIONS TESTING. THERE IS ALSO TSB 18-023-06 AND TSB 18-009-06. SYMPTOMS HAVE BEEN STALLING AND ROUGH SHIFT POINTS FOR THE VEHICLE. WHILE DRIVING IN THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS ON WINDY SECONDARY ROADS MY VEHICLE TWICE STALLED AT 40 MPH, ONE OCCASION I HAS A SEMI BEHIND ME THAT NARROWLY AVOIDED IMPACTING MY VEHICLE AS IT SUDDENLY LOST SPEED ON A TURN DUE TO STALLING. THE DEALER CAN NOT REPLICATE THE ISSUE. IT IS FAIRLY OBVIOUS AFTER RESEARCH ONLINE THAT THERE ARE KNOWN ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION SYSTEM OF THE CRD THAT THEY HAVE BEEN ATTEMPTING TO PROLONG THE SERVICE LIFE OF TRANSMISSION COMPONENTS BY USE OF VARIOUS "UNOFFICIAL" RECALLS KNOWN AS TSB'S., THUS TOTAL FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION, TORQUE CONVERTER WILL OCCUR OUT OF WARRANTY. IN MY SITUATION I COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN KILLED WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I URGE YOU TO INVESTIGATE THE SITUATION AND JEEPS KNOWLEDGE OF TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. IT HAS BECOME UNFORTUNATELY OBVIOUS THAT JEEP IS HOPING TO "BAND AID" THE SITUATION UNTIL WARRANTY PERIODS EXPIRE IN ORDER TO SAVE COSTS. THE LIBERTY CRD (DIESEL) WAS AN EXTREMELY LIMITED PRODUCTION RUN FOR JEEP OF ONLY SOME 13,000 VEHICLES OVER A 1.5 YEAR PERIOD. THEY NO LONGER PRODUCE THE VEHICLE FOR THE US MARKET. I AM VERY CONCERNED WITH THE SAFETY, BECAUSE OTHER CRD OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED TRANSMISSION FAILURE FOLLOWING THE "SHUDDER" SYMPTOM. JEEP ONLY MADE 11,000 CRD'S (DISCONTINUED IN 2006, HOWEVER STILL PART OF THEIR MARKETING CAMPAIGN!) AND THE OWNERS ARE HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME GETTING THEM TO RESPOND TO SEVERAL SAFETY PROBLEMS. THE ERG VALVE IS ANOTHER ISSUE. MINE HAS BEEN REPLACED ONCE, OTHER CRD OWNERS HAVE HAD MULTIPLE REPLACEMENTS. MY JEEP CRD TOTALLY LOST POWER WHEN THE EGR VALVE FAILED. ENGINE SEEMED TO BE RUNNING FINE IN NEUTRAL BUT SEEMED TO BE MAYBE FIGHTING WITH AUTO TRANSMISSION OR TORQUE CONVERTER TO MOVE. DEALERSHIP HAS REPLACED NUMEROUS PARTS ON TRANSMISSION, EGR VALVE TWICE, REPROGRAMMED SOMETHING ON TORQUE CONVERTER AND YET PROBLEM IS STILL THERE ON AN ONGOING BASIS SOMETIMES SLIGHT BUT ALWAYS APPARENT. ONE TIME IT TOOK ME TWO MINUTES TO GET THROUGH A STOP AND GO LIGHTS, THAT TIME DEALERSHIP SAID COMPUTER SAID I RAN OUT OF FUEL EVEN THOUGH FUEL GAGE SAID I STILL HAD A QUARTER OF A TANK AND THE WEEK BEFORE I HAD RUN IT TO EMPTY AND HAD NOT RUN OUT OF FUEL. VEHICLE CURRENTLY STUTTERS AT ABOUT 55-60 MPH HOUR AND HAS CONSISTENTLY GETS NO MORE THAN 22 MPG EVEN THOUGH IT HAS A DIESEL THAT SHOULD GET 26 MPG AND IT IS ALL HIGHWAY MILES. ONCE WHEN PASSING A VEHICLE IT STARTED TO ACT UP, YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT WILL LOSE ACCELERATION. I AM AFRAID TO TAKE THE CAR ON LONG-DISTANCE TRIPS FROM HOME FOR FEAR OR BEING BROKEN DOWN ON RURAL HIGHWAYS OR ROADS AND STUCK HUNDREDS OF MILES FROM HOME WHILE A JEEP DEALER TAKES 2 OR 3 WEEKS TO REPLACE MY TRANSMISSION. HOWEVER, THEY NEVER HAVE THE PART FOR THE "TRANSMISSION CUP PLUG BRACKET". I EVEN TOOK A DAY OFF OF WORK TO BRING THE JEEP TO THE DEALERSHIP SO THEY CAN TELL ME THEY RAN OUT OF PARTS. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE INTERMITTENTLY STALLED WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE OPERATED AT A REDUCED SPEED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE ALERTED. A FACTORY REPRESENTATIVE INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND WAS UNABLE DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER SUSPECTED THE COMBINATION OF THE DIESEL ENGINE AND THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WERE THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AWAITING FURTHER INSPECTION BY THE DEALER.

I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING UNUSUAL DRIVE LINE VIBRATIONS (24-26 MPH). THE DEALERSHIPS SERVICE MANAGER HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THE PRESENTS OF THIS ISSUE ALTHOUGH INDICATED THAT THIS IS NORMAL AND HEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME, THEREFORE REFUSING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I HAVE DRIVEN SEVERAL VEHICLES OF EXACT YEAR AND TYPE AND I DID NOT NOTE THE SAME CONDITION. OTHER THAN BEING AN ANNOYANCE ESPECIALLY FOR A NEW VEHICLE, ITS MY CONCERN THAT THIS MAY INDICATE A PENDING DRIVE LINE FAILURE THAT WOULD PRESENT A SAFETY CONCERN FOR MY FAMILY. *JB

ALSO, THE LIGHTS, INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR, FLICKER ON AND OFF. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH AND UPGRADED THE SOFTWARE. THIS HAS NOT REMEDIED THE PROBLEM. THERE ARE NO CODES ON THE COMPUTER OR BLACK BOX AND THE DEALERSHIP CANNOT DUPLICATE EITHER PROBLEM. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN REVESE IT DID MOVE AND THEN STOPPED. JEEP ANNOUNCED A RECALL ON 2005 JEEP LIBERTY'S, RECALL #05V460000. THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN BY MY DAUGHTER WHO IS A STUDENT AT JOHN'S HOPKINS IN BALTIMORE. DUE TO HER WORK LOAD, I FLEW FROM NOVI TO BALTIMORE MD, TO HAVE THE RECALL SERVICE COMPLETED AND AN APPOINT MENT MADE ON 12/9 WHEN THE NOTICE WAS RECEIVED. I ARRIVED AT THE DEALER , ANTWERPEN AND THE TIME ASSIGNED AND AFTER HOUR I AM INFORMED THAT THE PART IS NOT AVAILABLE. I POLITELY ASKED THAT WHEN MY DAUGHTER RETURNS THE CAR TO BE REPAIRED THE NEXT TIME THAT THEY PROVIDE HER WITH TRANSPORTATION, SINCE WE MADE AN APPOINTMENT AND I FLEW OUT TO GET IT DONE. GRANTED I WAS THERE TO HELP HER WITH OTHER ISSUES, BUT THIS WAS THE MAIN REASON FOR THE TRIP. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THIS WAS NOT POSSIBLE. I THE CONTACTED DAIMLER CHRYSLER (CASE NUMBER 14424386). THEY CALLED ME BACK SEVERAL HOURS LATER TO TELL ME THAT THEY SUPPORT THE DECISION OF THE ANTWERPEN JEEP IN BALTIMORE AND WILL NOT PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION. I UNDERSTAND THAT RECALLS HAPPEN, BUT MY ISSUE IS THAT IF I TAKE TIME TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT, AND THEN THEY CAN NOT PERFORM THE SERVICE ON A SAFETY RECALL, DAIMLER CHRYSLER OR ANTWERPEN HAS TO ASSUME THE LIABILITY OF PROVIDING MY DAUGHTER TRANSPORTATION WHILE THE VEHICLE IS RETURNED FOR SECOND TIME. *JB
DT: THE CONTACT COMPLAINED ABOUT SEVERAL PROBLEMS. THE FIRST PROBLEM OCCURRED WHEN SLOWING DOWN TO 50 MPH, THE VEHICLE JERKED. THE SECOND PROBLEM INVOLVED THE EGR VALVE WHICH WAS REPLACED. THE THIRD PROBLEM CONCERNED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATING. THERE WAS A POPPING NOISE IN THE REAR END WHEN REVERSING. WE HAVE A 2005 JEEP LIBERTY WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. WE PUT THE TRANSMISSION INTO 1ST GEAR MANUALLY AND IT SHIFTS OUT OF 1ST AND INTO SECOND GEAR WHILE GOING DOWN STEEP INCLINES. THIS CREATES A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE FOR US SINCE WE LIVE ON A STEEP INCLINE AND DRIVE ON SNOW AND ICE. THE TRANSMISSION WILL START OUT IN 1ST AND THEN AFTER REACHING ABOUT 1200 -1600 RPM IT WILL SHIFT AUTOMATICALLY INTO SECOND GEAR (WITHOUT MOVEMENT OF THE GEAR SHIFTER) AND THEN SHIFT BACK DOWN TO 1ST AFTER 3600 RPM. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY CLAIM THAT THEY DON'T HAVE A HILL GEAR. I HAVE WENT TO THE CHRYSLER WEB SITE AND FILED A COMPLAINT ASKING FOR ASSISTANCE AND TELLING THEM THAT THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, BUT THEY FAIL TO RESPOND COMPETENTLY. THEY CONTINUALLY TELL ME TO GO BACK TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP THAT TOLD ME THAT JEEP DOESN'T HAVE A HILL GEAR. I INSISTED THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND THAT THIS VEHICLE IS MADE FOR FOUR WHEELING UP AND DOWN STEEP INCLINES AND THE TRANSMISSION CAN NOT COME OUT OF THE GEAR THAT WILL LET YOU SAFELY NEGOTIATE THE TERRAIN. THEY RESPONDED WITH THEY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION TO MAKE AN ASSESSMENT. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE LIFE OF MY WIFE AND I HERE, BUT THEY DON'T CARE OR UNDERSTAND. I HAVE OWN 4X4 VEHICLES ALL MY LIFE AND NONE OF THEM HAVE ACTED LIKE THIS. THE DEALERSHIP HAS RUN THEIR COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS ON THE TRANSMISSION AND FAILED TO FIND ANYTHING WRONG, BUT THEY FAILED TO TEST DRIVE THE VEHICLE. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM ACROSS THE BOARD WITH THE JEEP LIBERTY AND CHRYSLER IS TRYING TO COVER IT UP, BY GIVING BOGUS ANSWERS LIKE WE DON'T HAVE A HILL GEAR AND WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION TO MAKE AN ASSESSMENT. *JB

I STOPPED MY 2005 JEEP LIBERTY IN THE DRIVEWAY OF MY HOME AND PUT THE CAR IN PARK REMOVED THE KEY AND OPENED THE DOOR. THE CAR STARTED ROLLING BACKWARDS. THE DEALER HAS TOLD ME THAT THE HOLE FOR THE PARK SLOT IN THE TRANSFER CASE WAS DRILLED TOO LARGE, I FEEL IF THAT HAPPENED TO MY CAR HOW MANY OTHERS HAVE A HOLE TOO LARGE, A CHILD COULD BE RUN OVER.
