There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The local dealer was contacted and suggested an appointment, and that the rear control arm was not covered under warranty. The contact was informed about NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V252000 (Fuel System, Gasoline, Structure) and NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V278000 (Suspension). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the local dealer for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.

ON SEPTEMBER 2, 2015 I BROUGHT MY 2006 JEEP LIBERTY IN TO A DEALERSHIP, BENSON CHRYSLER, IN GREER SC FOR A REAR STRUCTURE REINFORCEMENT RECALL REPAIR. AFTER BEING LEFT AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR 4.5 HOURS, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE RECALL REPAIR COULD NOT BE COMPLETED DUE TO A LARGE AMOUNT OF RUST ON THE BOLTS. I WAS TOLD BY THE MANAGER, BRAD THAT MORE THAN ONE TECHNICIAN LOOK AT THE CAR AND DETERMINED IT COULD NOT BE REPAIRED. I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP IN DESPAIR WITH MAJOR CONCERN BECAUSE THE RECALL INVOLVES A CHANCE OF THE JEEP FUEL TANK LEAKING DURING A REAR END COLLISION WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FIRE. NOW AS A MOTHER AND WIFE I CANNOT IMAGINE CONTINUING TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE KNOWING THE AT ANY GIVEN TIME I COULD LOSE MY CAR AND POSSIBLY THE LIFE OF ME AND MY FAMILY. THIS STARTED APROX 3 YEARS AGO. WHEN FILLING THE GAS TANK TO FULL, THE PUMP WOULD KICK OFF AND THEN GAS WOULD ALWAYS SPIT BACK AND OVERFLOW ON TO THE GROUND (SCARY) TO AVOID THIS, I STOPPED FILLING THE TANK TO FULL AND ONLY TO 3/4 FULL AND THE PROBLEM STOPPED. BUT NOW, I CAN'T ADD FUEL WITHOUT GAS SHOOTING BACK ALL OVER THE PLACE EVEN WHEN THE TANK HAS LOW FUEL. THE ONLY WAY FUEL CAN BE ADDED WITHOUT GETTING DRENCHED IN GAS, IS TO FIND A PUMP THAT YOU CAN FEATHER THE ON/OFF HANDLE TO RUN SLOW ENOUGH SO IT'S BARELY ADDING FUEL, THEN IT WILL NOT BACK UP. IT TAKES AT LEAST 20 MINUTES AT THE PUMP TO ADD 10 GALLONS OF GAS. UNFORTUNATELY I GAVE THIS VEHICLE TO MY 20 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND SHE IS SCARED TO ADD FUEL SO I HAVE TO DO IT. ALSO, I'VE HAD TO REPLACE THE CLOCK SPRING AND THE "GAS CAP" LIGHT NEVER SHUTS OFF. THIS INCIDENT STARTED IN 2008 AND AT THE TIME THOUGHT IT WAS A FAILURE OF THE GAS PUMP AT THE GAS STATION BUT NOW THE PROBLEM IS MORE COMMON AND HAPPENS WEEKLY, RECENTLY SPLASHING GASOLINE INTO MY EYES WHICH REQUIRED FLUID EYE RINSE AND MEDICAL ATTENTION. EVERY TIME I FILL UP THE TANK ON MY 2006 JEEP LIBERTY, THE GAS BEGINS TO OVERFLOW AND SPLASHES BACK, OUT OF THE FUEL INLET OPENING. THIS IN TURN SPRAYS FUEL OUT AT A FORCE, AND THEN ONTO THE GROUND. WHEN FILLING THE GAS TANK TO FULL WITH THE PUMP NOZZLE SET TO AUTOMATIC, THE TANK SPITS OUT 1/2 TO 1 GALLON OF GAS BEFORE THE NOZZLE DISENGAGES. THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM WITH THE GAS PUMP. HI, I HAVE OWNED THIS JEEP LIBERTY SINCE 2008 AND BOUGHT IT WITH 2700 MILES ON IT. THE PROBLEM I HAVE AND MANY OTHERS HAVE IS WITH THE FILLER NECK ON THE FUEL TANK. IT OVERFLOWS GAS EVERY TIME YOU FILL. EVEN IF I SLOW IT AT THE APPROX TIME THE METER SAYS IT SHOULD BE GETTING FULL. THE INTERNET RESEARCH SHOWS THAT THE NEW GAS TANK ASSEMBLY FROM JEEP HAS A NEW/FIXED SAFETY VALVE IN THE FILLER NECK THAT IS SUPPOSED TO HELP WITH A ROLLOVER ACCIDENT BUT APPARENTLY SLAPS SHUT WHEN FILLING CAUSING THE GAS PUKE ON CLOTHES, SHOES, GROUND, ETC. 2006 JEEP LIBERTY FUEL OVERFLOW HAZARD. WHEN REFUELING OUR 2006 JEEP LIBERTY, FUEL OVERFLOWS AFTER FUEL PUMP AUTOMATIC SHUTOFF IS TRIGGERED. THIS OVERFLOW NOW OCCURS EVERY TIME VEHICLE IS REFUELED. NO ONE IS ATTEMPTING TO "TOP OFF" THE FUEL TANK. THE OVERFLOW CAUSES A QUANTITY OF FUEL, THAT I ESTIMATE AT TWO TO FOUR CUPS, TO SPILL ON THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND ONTO THE GROUND. THIS FUEL OVERFLOW FLAW CREATES AN EXTREME FIRE HAZARD AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION RISK. THIS FLAW OCCURS IN THE WRANGLER MODEL OF CHRYSLER JEEP PRODUCTS ALSO, WHERE A RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. THE SAME FLAW IS OCCURRING IN MANY THOUSANDS OF JEEP LIBERTY'S AS IS EVIDENT BY THE HUGE VOLUME OF OWNER STATEMENTS POSTED ON MANY WEBSITES. GO CHRYSLER JEEP IN ENGLEWOOD, CO QUOTED A REPAIR COST OF $2031.00 TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF AT SERVICE STATION PUMPS DOES NOT SENSE THE BACK PRESSURE OF THE FILL TUBE FOR THESE VEHICLES. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME WHEN REFUELING VEHICLE AT ANY SERVICE STATION. EACH OCCURRENCE CAUSES SPILLAGE OF FUEL (APPROXIMATELY 6-12 OUNCES) ON EXTERIOR PAINTED SURFACE OF VEHICLE, ON PERSON FILLING VEHICLE AND ONTO PAVEMENT CREATING NOT ONLY CUMULATIVE DAMAGE TO VEHICLE EXTERIOR BUT FIRE AND ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS AS WELL. INTERNET RESEARCH CONCERNING THIS ISSUE WITH JEEP VEHICLES SHOWS THIS TO BE A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND CORRECTIVE ACTIONS ARE VERY RARELY ADDRESSED BY THE MANUFACTURER AND THEN ONLY IF VEHICLE IS WITHIN WARRANTY. I HAVE A 2006 JEEP LIBERTY THAT SPEWS GAS AS IT GETS FULL. IT HAS SHOT OUT AS MUCH AS 3-4 CUPS WORTH AT ITS WORST. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME IT IS A HUGE SAFETY PROBLEM CONSIDERING THE AMOUNT OF GAS THAT IS SPILLED EACH TIME.I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IT IS A FAULTY VENTING MECHANISM IN THE GAS TANK AND SEVERAL OTHERS HAVE THE SAME ISSUE ON JEEPS AND DODGES. I MADE MENTION OF IT AT THE DEALERSHIP EACH TIME I HAVE HAD IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY NEVER EVEN LOOKED INTO IT. THEY TOLD ME THAT IT MUST BE THE GAS PUMP I AM USING. THIS IS AN INCIDENT - WHEN FUELING THE GAS TANK WITH THE NOZZLE INSIDE THE GAS TANK OPENING, THE FUEL GUSHES OUT OF THE OPENING AFTER THE TANK IS FULL, SPILLING GAS ON THE VEHICLE AND ON THE GROUND. THIS IS NOT AT ONE GAS PUMP, IT HAPPENS AT ANY GAS STATION I GO TO. THIS RESULTS IN A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD AND DAMAGE TO THE PAINT ON THE VEHICLE. EACH GAS PUMP HAS AN AUTOMATIC VACUUM SHUT OFF WHEN THE GAS REACHES THE NOZZLE AND IS SUPPOSED TO SHUT OFF THE SUPPLY OF GAS. FOR SOME REASON, THE JEEP LIBERTY GUSHES OUT GAS ALL OVER THE PLACE EVERY TIME I FUEL IT. THERE IS A SLIGHT FUEL SYSTEM LEAK THAT ALLOWS AN AIR POCKET TO BUILD IN THE FUEL FILTER HOUSING. WHEN THIS AIR POCKET GETS DRAWN INTO THE INJECTOR PUMP, THE ENGINE BEGINS RUNNING BADLY, CAUSING IMMEDIATE LOSS OF POWER.
